The front cover this month was taken by Kenny Lewis. It is of the reformed Clock Tower of the Church In Competa located in the Plaza Almijara - Thanks Kenny. If anyone else would like to submit a photo for consideration for the front cover of The Grapevine Magazine please email your photo to grapevinesales@gmail.com. I can´t believe we are into November and talks of Christmas and how many days until Christmas Day have started. I have only just put my shorts away from the summer. I am not ready for Christmas yet! Christmas cards are on the shelves in my village of Competa both in Todo Express and Marco Polo. Last year I left it too late so don't be caught out like I was, go and buy them now before they sell out. Also, Todo Express is now taking Christmas food orders so don't forget to pick up an order form. Likewise in the village of Sayalonga, The Centro Plaza also has the essential Christmas food items along with Christmas cards, Christmas crackers and wrapping paper and even a toy list is available for free delivery or collection at the shop. Finally, if you are looking to do something different in November why not try the Christmas gifts and decorations work shops which are running for three Fridays in Competa. So it does appear Christmas is approaching fast! Enjoy and keep reading The Editor

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS Annual income Tax Returns Campaign Success

R

ecently published official news from the Spanish Inland Revenue (Agencia Tributaria) provides information regarding the ANNUAL INCOME TAX RETURNS CAMPAIGN, (CAMPAÑA DE LA DECLARACIÓN DE LA RENTA), carried out during April, May and June 2019, corresponding to the Tax Year 2018. According to this official information the campaign was a total success in terms of TAXES COLLECTED by the Tax Office, being the highest amount in decades. The tax office normally refunds money to citizens (around 300 MILLION EURO), but this time the Tax office received an extra 1,100 MILLION EURO. The total amount of tax collected by the tax office was much more than expected by the authorities. The reason for this increase in

16 The Grapevine

the total tax collected was because now all European Union countries interchange their tax information and this together with the taxes now being paid by the bigger private companies like Airbnb, Homeaway, etc. also contributed to this rise. Using the information provided by other EU countries the tax office has sent thousands of “Informative” letters to citizens suggesting that they should declare all their income in Spain, and this has proved to be very effective in many cases. In conclusion it could be said that the sharing of computer data by Tax offices is much easier and more effective nowadays. Resulting in the Spanish Tax Authorities having access to much more information than ever about citizens. To avoid penalties, charges and default interests, we recommend all readers should submit their annual tax returns correctly and on time (as residents or as non-residents), by

contacting a professional solicitor / tax advisor. All readers should contact a professional to review their personal tax situation and be ready to pay their taxes on time. Our law office is happy to meet readers free of charge to review and discuss their personal circumstances and recommend the best course of action. To make a free appointment please contact our Law office. Jose M. Lopez-Avalos Tel. (00 34) 952 901 225 Fax. (00 34) 952 901 226 E-Mail: mail@manilvasolicitors.com See Advert opposite

Although millions, or even billions of people may already be saints, All Saints' Day observances tend to focus on known saints --that is those recognized in the canon of the saints by the Catholic Church. The traditional thing to do on November 1st is to purchase flowers, especially chrysanthemums and present them as gifts to their loved ones. It is the day of the year when the most flowers are sold, and the cemeteries are filled with colour from every type of flower

26 The Grapevine

imaginable. A beautiful sight to see, indeed! Churches also hold mass in memories of those deceased to supposedly shorten their time spent in purgatory. Despite the feeling of sadness one would think should pertain to Dia de Todos los Santos, this day is not just about mourning the loss of loved ones. It is also a day to celebrate life. Popular activities for such purpose are eating traditional sweets (more on that below) and participating in family-friendly activities such as going to see José Zorilla's 1844 play “Don Juan Tenorio”, traditionally staged in theatres across the country. The character of the play is closely related to the dead. Another activity, one especially popular in the north of Spain, is to head out to the streets or the countryside for a traditional “castañada”. The castañada consists of townsfolk gathering for an outside get-together and keep warm by eating the “castañas”

(chestnuts) that someone roasts and sells in the most traditional of ways: in a small bonfire or using a modern grill. You may want to head out to Cádiz for the Fiesta de Todos los Santos. The locals really "paint the town red" and go all out with parades, fireworks, markets selling all types of local products, children´s activities and magic shows. The city celebrates this holiday for a whole week (starting even before November 1st!), so festivities will be abundant. There are times when it is easy to forget how catholic Spain can be but All Saints’ Day is a powerful reminder of the importance of religion, and of the family, even in the modern age.

BENIDORM FIESTAS Starts 2nd Weekend in November

T

he annual Benidorm fiestas take place in honour of the town’s patron Saints ‘la Virgen del Sufragio’ and ‘San Jaime Apóstol’. They always begin on the Friday of the second weekend of November and officially end the following Wednesday. During these days there are all kinds of street parties, open air theatre, sporting contests and music events of many genres as well as joyful religious events all of which serve to unite the population of Benidorm. The celebrations officially culminate in a huge parade of beautifully decorated floats early in the evening of the Wednesday followed by a fantastic firework display from Playa de Poniente. The people on the floats are all in fancy dress and throw thousands of sweets into the crowd so if you’re visiting with children tell them to take a

34 The Grapevine

carrier bag to collect them. The first place online to list all the planned activities is the Visitbenidorm Website. Just look for “Benidorm’s Patron Saint Fiestas Programme”. Origins of the Benidorm Festival These fiestas can be traced back as far as March 1740 when legend has it that a ship was washed up on the local shore during a terrible storm. Not knowing where the ship had come from some of the local townsfolk decided to burn it so as to aleviate any danger of it being the source of an outbreak of any infectious diseases. In the ashes that remained they saw an image of the Virgin which they took to the church where a small chapel was built in her honour. A reenactment of this episode is staged every year on Playa de Poniente as part of the

celebrations. The reason that the fiestas are in November rather than March are because otherwise the fishermen who were out at sea catching tuna wouldn’t have been able to attend so they were delayed until they returned from what was known as the ‘Almadraba’ in November. Fancy Dress Thursday Whilst the fiestas officially end with the Wednesday night fireworks display it is the unofficial Thursday that unites many of Benidorm’s British residents with visiting holidaymakers. The day is dedicated to a full day party in fancy dress that takes places all around the resort’s popular bars. Make sure to bring some fancy dress with you and don’t plan on travelling home on the Friday!

little Spanish village is now known for this vibrant cultural event. Visitors came especially for this Symposium Luz and to experience the creative vibes and the beauty of the village. All artists have gone home again with many sweet memories, new inspiration, new friendships and beautiful experiences.

5TH SYMPSOIUM LUZ An Unforgettable Week in Competa!

C

ultural association Luz de la Vida & Galeria Luz de la Vida held from the 12th till the 19th October the 5th International Art Symposium LUZ. A special group of professional artists visited the charming mountain village Cómpeta. Lieuwke Loth, an artist herself who also runs the art Galeria Luz de la Vida, organises this art symposium every year. This time 13 artists were invited: Abgar Khachatryan (Armenia), Lebuïn d’Haese (Belgium), Tanja Eigendaal (Denmark), Lee Youngji (Korea), Natalya Zaloznaya (Belarus), Wieland Schoeffner (Germany), Ronald Kleijer (Netherlands/Uzbekistan), Lidia Simeonova USA/Bulgaria), Krassimir Kolev (Bulgaria), Jin Yu (China), Sergey Komyagin and Elena Shumacher (Russia). They stayed in three different houses and worked in a public space, they all loved Competa and its natural surroundings. The sun did shine all the week! As an

36 The Grapevine

excursion they went on the inspiring trip to El Torcal, the rock formations. Many visitors witnessed the creative processes of the artists. On Thursday as a special guest we welcomed the Spanish Bonsai Master Nacho Salar who lives in Torrox where he has his Bonsai garden and workshop named ‘Bonsainara’. He showed us the art of shaping Bonsai trees! Wieland Schoeffner made a sculpture out of local stone and Lebuin D’Haese made many art pieces in ceramics. The others started with blank canvases and at the end of the week there was much exquisite high quality art! Saturday the 19th Oct they celebrated together the end of the joyful Symposium and the start of the International art show in Galeria Luz de la Vida. A young Czech couple came especially to help Lieuwke during the event. New friendships were made and many ideas, expertise, contacts, inspiration and laughter was shared. For Cómpeta this event brings new dynamics as well. Even from far abroad this

This is organised and arranged by Lieuwke Loth. English filmmaker Lara Jackson filmed many hours and will edit all film footage and we’ll put the film online in 2020! Lieuwke is thankful for the help of Marga (catering) Lara Jaine Jackson (filmer), Patrick, Veronika and Kristov (volunteers), other volunteers and the musicians. She is glad that the council of Competa offered that public space to use. The collaboration with the Teteria Hierbabuena and Taberna Oscar helps her to make it a great experience for the artists. She thanks all magazines, of course also The Grapevine and other press for announcing the event. Hopefully next year in October we'll be able to welcome another beautiful group of professional artists to Competa! By selling the symposium art Lieuwke can continue this great annual event! The art will be on show until the end of November. Don’t miss this exclusive show. We’re looking forward to welcome you in the gallery Luz de la Vida in Cómpeta! BODEGAS BENTOMIZ, SAYALONGA Home to Málaga's Best Wines?

T

here's a winery above Sayalonga – it is just off the road between the town and the Archez junction. It's called Bodegas Bentomiz and the wine they make is first class. Set up by a Dutch couple who moved to the area almost 25 years ago, they produce wines that are distinctively fresh and subtle. The range is called “Ariyanas” and includes sweet and dry, white, red and rosé. The Ariyanas wines have caught the attention of the wine world at large. Over the 15 years they've been operating commercially they have found distribution in a dozen countries and placed the wines in some 20 or so Michelin-starred restaurants. Their dry muscat (Ariyanas Seco Sobre Lías Finas) and one of their sweet muscats (Ariyanas Terruño Pizarroso) won in the Sabor a Málaga competition to be named the best of their respective categories. The story of how their business

38 The Grapevine

has developed is astonishing: André and Clara started in other fields; both are self-taught and yet have achieved a professional level of expertise and excellence. Their history – along with just what wine-making in Málaga's Axarquía region involves – can be discovered at the winery. They run a daily tour and tasting from Wednesday to Sunday, all year round. Not only that, but to provide a fuller experience of the wine with food, as well as developing their love of gastronomy and André's love of cooking, their wine-salon doubles as a lunch-time restaurant, with the gourmet meals served just after the tasting at 14:00 – so you can combine tour, tasting and lunch, if you wish. Accolades have rolled in from all sides: the food is just wonderful. Indeed, the reviews of Bodegas Bentomiz on TripAdvisor and Facebook, their client photos on Instagram (#bodegasbentomiz), and press articles, all express visitors'

delight in the passion that André, Clara and their small, dedicated team, display in creating a “complete wine experience”. For special occasions they go a little further. Their “Mountain Wine & Music” summer concerts are thrilling events with live music, gourmet food and wine all enjoyed beside the winery in one of the most beautiful places in the province. Their occasional “dinner and music” evenings allow André to develop exciting new menus. And this Christmas they're offering a splendid 7-course banquet with wine – the best gastronomic celebration! After Christmas, when we're all in the doldrums they have a special JANUARY OFFER – book lunch for 4 and one wine-pairing menu (a glass with each course) is free. That's a taste of the best of Málaga, free of charge – a mustdo experience www.bodegasbentomiz.com

SPANISH HAMS Vocabulary surrounding Spanish Hams

T

he unique vocabulary surrounding Spanish hams can be daunting initially, until you understand the three key variables used to classify Spanish hams: pig breed, diet and cut. Pig Breed & Diet Ibérico Breed Pigs There are four classifications of Jamón Ibérico, made from the Ibérico breed pig. The classifications reflect the breed of pig, the percent of pure Ibérico genetics in the pig and the quantity of acorns they eat (the word "acorns" is translated as “bellota”). -Jamón 100% Ibérico de Bellota made from free-range, 100% Ibérico breed pigs that eat acorns. Ibérico de Bellota hams are from Ibérico pigs that live outdoors most of their lives and spend the last three to four months of their lives feasting on rich, sweet acorns that have dropped from the ground from holm and cork trees in the meadows of a region called the dehesa. This period of grazing on the open range is called the montanera, and the pigs add about half their weight during this period. The coveted hams they produce are unique in the world: beautiful nutty ham slices which glisten

40 The Grapevine

when they are served because 60% of their marbled fat contains healthy mono triglycerides (like olive oil) that melt at room temperature. Because of its quality, many connoisseurs have referred to Jamón Ibérico de Bellota as the "Beluga caviar of hams."

usually referred to by the following names, whether made from Ibérico pigs or others. The Ibérico versions of each of these cuts only became available in the U.S. in 2007.

-Jamón Ibérico de Bellota - made from crossbred free-range Ibérico pigs (crossed with Duroc pigs) that eat acorns. The percentage (%) of Ibérico breed must be added to the label.

-Paleta (front leg or shoulder, bone-in or boneless)

-Jamón Ibérico Cebo de Campo made from crossbred free-range Ibérico pigs that eat a mix of fodder and acorns. -Jamón Ibérico Cebo or simply Jamón Ibérico - made from farmraised, crossbred Ibérico pigs that only eat fodder. Durac & Landrace Breed Pigs Jamón Serrano comes from white pigs of the Duroc or Landrace breeds. These pigs are raised on farms, rather than open ranges, and fed a diet of cereals. They are cured in Spain for 8 months to two years.

-Jamón (back leg, bone-in or boneless)

-Lomo (cured pork loin) -Chorizo, Salchichón, Fuet, Butifarra, Morcilla, Longaniza and Sarta (types of sausage) Other Classifications Just as with wines, some hams now carry a Denominación de Origin, indicating where and how the ham was cured. There are also quality seals, from industry groups like the Consorcio del Jamón Serrano Español, on jamones that deliver the quality and flavors synonymous with specific guidelines.

moving the new barrels of wine down to the sea, ready for export. They were transported on sledges pulled by oxen. The clattering sound this created through the streets indicated to everyone that the new wine was ready and was a cause for celebration.

FIESTA DE SAN ANDREAS Some Bizzare Party Behaviour!

L

a Fiesta de San Andres, or the Festival of San Andres, occurs on the 29th/30th of November. As it is connected with the production of the new season's wine, it tends to have the better celebrations in the northern wine producing areas, at such towns and villages as La Orotava, Icod de Los Vinos, Puerto de La Cruz and San Juan de La Rambla. It consists of a typical saint's day festivities, but with a couple of unique twists. Arrastre los Cacharros Literally meaning "dragging the pots", this quaint (if noisy) custom has a variety of theories as to its origins. Two of these relate to San Andres himself. One suggests that he came home late in November (all the other saints having arrived on their appointed All Saints Day, November the 1st), limping, drunk and "full of pots", making an almighty clattering sound. Another also refers to the saint's drinking habits, stating that he arrived on the island just as the new wine was being unveiled and partook a little too enthusiatically. Subsequently falling into an drunken stupor, the children of the village tied pots and pans to his clothes, so that if he stirred in his sleep, the noise would wake him.

46 The Grapevine

Another, probably more authentic, theory is that in centuries gone by, the wine production process involved washing the barrels in salt water and the villagers had no option but to roll them down to the sea. The metal rim of the barrels made a clattering sound which the Arrastre los Cacharros is attempting to reproduce today. The event begins at a modest level, with young children running through the streets dragging a few cans tied to a piece of string. Later on, the young men of the town join in and things, naturally, are taken up a notch. Objects dragged by now start to get bigger and can include such items as oil drums, car exhausts and washing machine drums! Such heavy objects have to be very securely tied together and, because of the weight involved, are connected to a sort of yolk, which several youths will attempt to drag as fast as possible. There is another youth running in front to clear the way and care is taken to aim for any potholes, to increase the deafening racket. Only in Tenerife, eh? Arrastre de Las Tableros This means "dragging the boards", but should more accurately be called "riding the boards". It seems to originate from the ancient practice of

The riding of the boards requires a very steep incline and is thus confined to such towns and villages that have them, most notably Icod de Los Vinos and La Guancha. Needless to say, it's mostly young Tenerife men who indulge in this reckless practice. A sort of sledge is fashioned out of wood, which is then waxed on its underside to make it slippy. Yes, you've guessed it - the participants then slide off down the steep streets. The boards travel faster and faster and, as there's not really any way of steering them, it's more a matter of luck whether they avoid any obstacles to reach the finish. This is marked by a big pile of old tyres, which the board eventually crashes into, sending its rider hurtling through the air. There's no prize - just the gathered crowd's applause.

The Wine Tasting Even though it's November, the weather is usually clement enough to make this an outdoor event. The various wineries offer their new vintages for tasting. It is a community event and you'll be given your sample of wine in a plastic cup. Braziers are set up in the street where chestnuts are roasted and you can also get a snack of sardines and sweet potatoes. Where: Icod de los Vinos and Puerto de la Cruz. When: 29 November.

However, that's not all that they have on offer! Don't forget about those little extras; the champagne and prosecco, the luxury cheeses fresh from the deli counter, Gluhwein, crème freiche, double cream, mince pies, advent calanders, parsnips, truffles…the list of things to indulge in is endless! For those of you who shopped their last year, you will remember that as well as the normal smiles and laughter of the staff, there

If you are away or have problems getting to the supermarket in person remember that you can also phone in your orders and arrange for them to be delivered at a convenient time! Another option that they offer is a pick-up service for people who do not drive and need bringing into the village to do their shopping: they will send a car to collect you from home and then take you back again once you have finished. Despite speaking English they are also encouraging to those who wish to practice and improve their Spanish. Ana is always up for a chat and makes for a very good impromptu teacher! RIOJA-STYLE CHICKEN RECIPE Pollo a la Riojana

T

his chicken recipe comes from the region of La Rioja, in the North of Spain, hence the name "Pollo a la Riojana" or Rioja-Style Chicken. It is a region wellknown for its wine production. The winters in Northern Spain are cold, like the climate in much of Europe, so soups and stews are very popular. This stew includes chicken and chorizo with sautĂŠed peppers and garlic. It is a hearty main course for winter but is light enough for any time of the year. Ingredients 1 chicken, cut into 8 pieces, OR 8 pieces of legs and breasts 1 yellow onion, peeled 2 cloves garlic 2 red peppers 1 Spanish chorizo sausage 3-4 Tbsp. olive oil 2-3 sprigs parsley 1 cup white wine 1 cup chicken broth 1-15 oz. can peas, drained (or 8 oz. frozen peas)

salt and pepper to taste Steps to Make It Important Note: If you are unable to find Spanish chorizo sausage, you may substitute Portuguese Linguica sausage, which is very similar. Mexican or Caribbean varieties cannot be used as substitutes for Spanish chorizo in Spanish recipes, due to the difference in consistency and flavor. Peel and chop the onion. Peel the garlic and cut into thin slices. Remove the stems and seeds and cut the red peppers into strips. Slice the chorizo into rounds. Chop the parsley. Heat a large, heavy-bottomed pot with a couple tablespoons of olive oil. Brown the chicken in the pot on both sides. Remove pot from heat and set aside.

While the chicken is browning in the pot, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large heavybottomed frying pan or skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and sautĂŠ until onion is translucent. Add parsley, peppers, chorizo. Cook, stirring often for about 10 minutes. Add vegetables to the large pot of chicken and mix. Add white wine and chicken broth. Stir. Cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes. About 5 minutes before removing chicken from stove, add peas. Total:60 mins Prep:10 mins Cook:50 mins Yield: 5-6 Servings

La Termica, Malaga

TWO SUMMER TRIPS Josephine Drew Reports

M

y friend and I went to the Banksy experience in La Termica which is west of Malaga, and I thought you may like to know what a wonderful venue this is. (Well, I thought so)! Its not really on the 'to do' list when visiting, especially when the last bus out to Competa is 6.30!

for about three quarters of an hour along the coast road, you would reach the area! It took about that long on the bus! (Bye the bye, if you ever do get a town bus or indeed an Alsa bus, do remember to get off at the rear, or the driver will have words, and the 'British embarrassment' factor will set in)!

We got off our bus at the Port stop and then caught a no 7 bus, which uses the next bus shelter on from the Loymerbus, (we googled it, I am not that au fait with bus timetables)! All fares are 1.30e and there was a map of stops on the bus shelter, which meant nothing to us except that La Termica was second to last, so we knew we were in for a roundabout route of Malaga.

Another tip is to sit in the middle section so you can view the screen showing the bus stops. We didn’t, and spent the journey craning our necks to see where we were and t what was written on some bus shelters. It was by pure luck we spotted the name on a hoarding with an arrow. It was around the corner from the bus stop.

We went to places I have never seen, and probably wouldn’t recognise again. This part of the city has lots of lovely old buildings, with bustling streets, houses and apartments. And a Park. If you walked from the Port

I immediately recognised it as the building where we always used to enjoy a substantial lunch, including wine, on the 'Competa old people's jollies'! (They stopped for a while but have been re-instated, now called education trips).

62 The Grapevine

The building that stands today, was built in 1907 to 1912, but before that, in 1904 it was the House of Mercy, and before that the Convent of San Domingo. I think there is still a chapel ruin, but I have never explored it. It has three square courtyards and is two stories high, and cost 15,000e to build! There is a lovely garden in the front with a marble fountain from the 19th century taken from the Civil Hospital. The inside courtyards are full of trees and plants, and there are dormitories upstairs. This is where the Competa senior citizens went to stay a few weeks ago on a cultural weekend in Malaga. During the war with Morocco (a new war on me) it was a hospital and recovery centre. Its other early uses were to take children in need from the neighbourhood of Huelin and teach the boys how to use the printing press which published the official gazette of the province, thus preparing them to have a career in graphic arts. (Probably taught the girls how to

mop)! It was an education centre for all children in need. From 1938 it became known as the home of our Lady of Victory, Sra Teresa Prat, she was the Mother Superior for more than half a century and when she died Malaga city named the street leading to La Termica after her. I heard, no idea if true, that in the Spanish Civil War it housed orphans.

and I was quite taken with the ones made from recycled items, for example, the bull which from a distance looked like a bronze, up close its legs were really table legs, and his horns looked like door handles, its back was a net with small shells, and all had been treated to look like bronze! Its well worth visiting. We caught the no 7 back and there is also a no 16 that goes to the Parque.

I haven’t been there for a few years and I was surprise when I saw that it had been refurbished in 2013. Its previous refurbishment was 1981.

I went on another education trip at the beginning of October, (this is all free for Pensioners in the village) and we stopped at La Termica, but only for the Mayor to have a conversation with someone at the gate, I was hoping we would eat there again, but we didn’t. We ate in a beach-front bar with more flies than at Ayers Rock!

The toilets are a vast improvement. They are housed in a huge room, and previously, although very clean, (the Spanish use more bleach per capita than any other European country) they were decidedly old fashioned, with chipped tiles and the largest wash basins in the world, like mini baths! We used to see teenagers washing and cleaning their teeth when we visited at lunch times. Sometimes after we had finished our meal they would troop in for food, and also some very small children would come in accompanied by a couple of adults, so perhaps they still looked after the needy young people of the district. These days it houses art exhibitions, music recitals and other activities, in fact its a thriving cultural centre. But no idea now if its used to feed children. If anyone knows its present usage and history I would love to know. When you cross the road from the main entrance you can see the gates of a park at the end of the road, this is the Parque del Oeste. A large shady place with a lake, fountains, swans, ducks, turtles, a few animals, and a play and picnic areas. Also there is art. Plenty of statues of animals

We were a bit early for our first museum 'slot', so we broke up and went into various cafés, where my Spanish companions proceeded to take out half baguettes, wrapped in foil, and started eating. ( This was a café that managed to charge us 5.95e for a coffee and a tila tea)! Then they ordered their drinks from the waiter and complained he was taking too long! The very young staff looked bemused by the village ways. We call these, 'only in Spain' moments. The first Museum was called 'Revello de Toro', in Calle Afligidos, which is in the area of the Malaga Museum and the Roman amphitheater. Its housed in a 17th century house which belonged to Pedro de Mena a sculptor, whose statue is outside, it was his home and workshop and they have been beautifully preserved. It also houses some artifacts of the sculptor and I think the guide said its the best example of a 17th century house. (The lift is new)

born in 1926, are mainly female figures and there are 104 housed permanently. We also saw the feria posters he painted in a temporary collection, I thought they were lovely. Leaflets in all languages were on display just inside the door with a small inexpensive shop, no security and helpful staff. We then had our meal, and off to Carmen Thyssen Museum near Calle Larios. This had security, an expensive shop, a nice café and is in a large several storey building. It does have a lovely shady courtyard just inside the entrance where several of the ladies, who were tired, sat and chatted, whilst the guides raced us round in two groups, up three stories, (thankfully they used the lifts), looking at Spanish art from 1700s onwards, some of it had really delicate brush strokes, especially on the costumes of the time. It was like a history lesson on fiesta clothing! What was also noticeable were the vibrant colours in the older pictures and the attention to the smallest detail, a bird or a butterfly. On an other floor were pictures done in the Impressionist style, and a collection of seascapes and beaches of around Malaga. I ana others were on overload by this time! I personally preferred the Toro pictures, but I was glad I went to see both. I would like to thank the Mayor and the Diputation de Malaga for our day out, especially as we managed to get to Competa at 7pm. Normally if the bus gets back before 8pm the day has not been deemed a success, but this time everyone was glad to get home to rest their feet.

CUT BACK AND LOOSE A FEW POUNDS BEFORE CHRISTMAS Make Some sensible and Simple Choices.

I

t's that time of year again. The air is turning chillier, the nights are closing in and our thoughts are turning to that Christmas party outfit we'll be wearing in two months time.

Fish which is fatty is good for you because it keeps you full for longer.

If the thought of squeezing into it terrifies you, you might be tempted to resort to a crash diet come November. Instead, why not try to make simple changes to your diet now? You'll barely recognise them and might see the pounds start to slowly fall away in time for the festive season. Simple changes for healthy living here are some top tips.

3. Cut out sugary carbs Cut out sugary carbs like chocolate, cake and bread.Bread is very sugary unless you make it yourself.

1. Don’t cut out fat “There are different sorts of fats.

72 The Grapevine

2.Stop drinking fruit juice Cut out fruit juices.

4. Cut down on your alcohol intake Try and have a couple of days a week without alcohol to give your liver a bit of a rest. There are a lot of calories in drinks but also if you’re drinking alcohol you’re more likely to reach for the crisps

because your inhibitions go. 5. Don’t eat between meals Eating lots of small meals, that’s a popular diet myth. 6. Measure your waist It’s best to measure your stomach around your belly button. It should be less than half your height. Gut fat is the worst sort of fat. It’s a better measurement than weighing yourself. Get the tape measure out. If you want to lose 10 pounds fast in time for Christmas you don't have time to start a diet delivery plan, hire a personal trainer, or read self-help books. You need a no-nonsense approach that

accomplishes two basic things: Burns more calories than you consume Provides ample nutrition irrespective of the calorie count. The bottom line is that you want to be both sensible and realistic in your approach. While some people can shed 10 pounds in a few weeks, the amount you lose ultimately depends on your starting weight, your current health and age, and your commitment to a holistic plan involving diet and exercise. Weight loss is all about consuming fewer calories than you burn during routine activity. The best way to figure this out is by writing down everything you eat or in the course of a day. Since you're on a deadline, you won't have time to keep a food diary to track your intake over a week. Instead, just sit down and crunch the numbers, listing everything you eat and drink on a normal day. You can then use a nutritional counter to add up how many calories you consume in a 24-hour period.

many calories you need to cut back on based on your age, height, current weight, activity level, and target date. The great thing about the calculator is that it will tell you if your weight loss goals are too ambitious and will likely to put you at risk. Now that you've done your initial calculations, you can subtract the recommended caloric intake from the numbers of calories you currently consume. For example, if you currently consume 2,800 calories per day and need to eat no more than 2,000 to lose a pound or two per week, that leaves you with 800 calories you need to cut. But rather than just saying "I'll cut out all bread," take the time to build a weekly menu that is both balanced and meets your daily nutritional needs. While you can certainly take a daily supplement to replace lost nutrients, but it is far better to do so with food rather than tablets.

If you want to meet your weight loss goal within a specific time frame, you cannot do it without exercise. Remember that the weight loss equation is based on An average woman needs to burning more calories than you about 2,000 calories per day to consume. By increasing your maintain her normal weight and activity level, even by as little as 1,500 calories per to lose one pound per week. On your days off, enjoy a walk with a friend and do other activities you enjoy to reward yourself. By keeping active, a little every day, you will begin to see the results before you know it. While most of us measure our weight loss by stepping on the scale, it is equally important to keep track of the tools for weight loss, namely the number of calories you eat and the amount of activity you put in. It is all about discipline. By counting every calorie and logging your exercise hours, you can stay firmly on track while better understanding how each contributes to your weight loss goals. Keep to a plan make sensible choices, excersise and then pounds will fall away in time for Christmas but be realistic. Weight loss is generally a slow process. Many people lose patience before reaching their end goal. Although it is often possible to lose weight fast in the beginning, very few people can continue to lose weight at a rate of more than 1–2 pounds per week. Another major problem is that many people have unrealistic expectations of what is achievable with a healthy diet and exercise. The truth is, not everyone can look like a fitness model or bodybuilder. The photos you see in magazines and other places are often enhanced. If you have already lost some weight and you feel good about yourself, but the scale doesn't seem to want to budge any further, then perhaps you should start working on accepting your body the way it is.

happy on poor soils. Evergreen, it weeps romantically down to the ground and its white flowers are followed by cascading strings of pink berries which can be used as a peppercorn substitute. Very aggressive rooting, it's great for binding soil together but not one you'd want by any sort of structure. Cupressus Arizonica, the Arizona cypress, is another platinised planting. Very drought resistant, it would make a permanent and lovely towering silvery Christmas tree – as we are approaching that season! Metrosideros excelsa, the New Zealand Christmas tree can be grown either as a shrub or tree. It is slow-growing but exceptionally tough and its olive green leathery leaves blend well into the soft shades of the campo. In late spring/ summer it will erupt with red pom-pom like flowers.

DOWN TO EARTH! Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh of Viveros Florena, Cómpeta

N

ovember comes smothered in falling leaves, tinted golden by the sunrays of late autumn, hot chestnuts on chilly evenings and snuggling close to the fire. But it's also a month of great action in the garden; this is the month, above all, for making dreams come true – for planting for pleasure next year and through the years. Autumnal dews, dampness and downpours indicate that now is the time to settle plants into their new homes. Almost everything benefits from an autumn planting, from winter bedding, herbs, perennials, shrubs, climbers, succulents, fruit and ornamental trees. If your starting with a new garden, or new area, it's always best to get the bigger items in first – trees that

84 The Grapevine

not only give structure and beauty but provide shade and windbreaks too for more delicate souls. They are such an important decision that it's essential to get it right – it's not very easy to move a badlyplaced/ill-considered tree. Let's have a look at some options but, don´t forget, at Viveros Florena we can show you examples and talk through best options for you, so come and see us. We're wellstocked and can provide all of these: Windbreak/shelter trees and trees for windy positions: Tamarix gallica a tough, deciduous, shrubby small tree with fine feathery foliage to filters the wind and a froth of pink flowers like candy floss in springtime. A good pioneer planting as it fills out quickly on very lean pickings! Schinus molle, or false pepper tree, is another quick grower,

Trees to give privacy/block a bad view: One of the first priorities in these cases is speed of growth – if you've something to hide, you want to do it quickly! Schinus molle, as detailed above, with its big head of foliage is a natural. The large and varied mimosa family, or acacias, are great for their speed of growth too. Evergreen with many differing leaf forms and their typical yellow powder-puff scented flowers, don´t overwater them and they will then grow harder and more windresistant. If you need something skinny – maybe to hide a pylon – the Italian cypresses, cupressus sempervirens, are naturals piercing blue skylines with their vertical form. Trees that are good near pools: In this situation cleanliness is tantamount and a non-aggressive root system. Evergreen is almost essential though, if you cover your pool during the colder months you may be ok with leaf drop. Some trees, although evergreen, are incredibly messy – like mimosas. This is where citrus are brilliant. Evergreen with shiny dark green leaves, white heavily-scented flowers and stunning fruits, they

are incredibly ornamental. Another quick-growing and pretty evergreen is the Norfolk Island hibiscus or lagunaria patersonii. It has olive-green leaves, more silvered underneath and pale pink hibiscus-like flowers through late spring and summer. Downside is that the seedcases are lined with irritant hairs which protect the seeds, so take care not to handle them. If you've a sheltered poolside setting, the deciduous plumeria or frangipane might suit. It will lose its leaves but they are big so not too much problem to collect up and its waxy perfumed flowers are stunningly beautiful. Small trees for patios: Citrus and lagunaria patersonii, as above, and lagerstroemia indica or crepe myrtle tree. This makes an extremely pretty deciduous tree with good autumn colours and ruffled crepe-paperlike springtime flowers in soft shades of pink, lilac and white. If you've patience, arbutus unedo the strawberry tree is very pretty too with dark green evergreen leaves, clusters of scented white bell-like flowers and red strawberry-like fruits which are edible if somewhat unpalatable; they are however used in liqueurs. Mature trees develop lovely peeling caramel-coloured bark too.

Spectacular lookers: Jacaranda mimosifolia with their blue-lilac clouds of flowers are everyone's favourite and one of my favourite childhood memories of African cities. Chorisia speciosa/insignis, the kapok trees, have become popular in recent years with their striking thorny trunks and gorgeous orchidlike flowers in pink/gold or speckled yellow/buff. Paulownia tomentosa, Empress/foxglove tree. Ours at the garden centre always draws comment with its huge heartshaped leaves and racemes of lilac, yellow-throated foxglove-like flowers. It's big, bold and beautiful. Brachychiton acerifolius, the Illiwarra flame tree with shiny hand-like leaves that drop in May/June revealing brilliant scarlet clusters of flowers dangling on the bare branches until it re-leafs. Erythrina lysistemon, common coral tree with striking clusters of scarlet-coral flowers on bare branches.

More tender beauties: If you've a sheletered garden, lucky you! You can grow the African tulip tree, spathodea campanulata, an absolute stunner with bunches of scarlet flowers lined gold on their edges. More sheltered still – go for the flamboyant tree – its common Best shade trees: name says it all! Botanically If you want lush summer shade but delonix regia, it is widely regarded winter sun go for: as one of the most beautiful trees Albizia julibrissin, the silk tree, with super-elegant lacy leaves and has ferny, far-reaching branches striking scarlet flowers. with pink powder-puff flowers in late spring. It also comes in a Unusual leaf colour: delicious chocolate form. One of the best for fiery autumnal Melia azedarach, or Persian lilac, colour is liquidambar styraciflua, has deep-green filigreed leaves the sweetgum. Or try the slowand scented lilac springtime growing but majestic ginkgo flowers followed by clusters of biloba, maidenhair tree with its honey-coloured berries lovely honeyed colouration in (poisonous) which dangle on the autumn. Plummy leaf colour bare-branches through winter. makes for a great contrast tree. Tipuana tipu, the tipu tree, bears Two of the best are the ornamental yellow flowers and has one of the plum, prunus cerasifera, with its biggest canopies. lovely pink springtime flowers and Tecoma stans is another yellow the dark burgundy tinged leaves of with dangling bells of golden cercis Canadensis Forest Pansy. flowers – tough and quick, it's also a good pioneering tree.

Large leaves: Banana and the banana look-alike, but tougher, strelitzia Nicolai, the giant bird of paradise plant give a touch of exoticism. Catalpa bignonioides, the Indian bean tree has huge heart-shaped leaves (rather like the paulownia described above) and scented white flowers with purple and yellow striations. And hibiscus tiliaceus, beach hibiscus, great for a seaside position, as you may have guessed! It has big rounded leaves and pale yellow hibiscus flowers which fade to pale pink before falling. Which reminds me of another hibiscus, h. mutabilis or confederate rose, another largeleaved lovely, either shrubby or tree-form, but this one is special because its flowers change colour, from white to pale pink and deep rose before dying. Edible trees: Lots of trees have edible fruits but not many have edible flowers or leaves! Acca sellowiana, feijoa or pineapple-guava tree has beautiful coral-coloured waxy flowers that almost look too good to eat but they are edible – try them across a green salad for that wow factor. Just remember that, if you take the flowers, you won´t get the fruits which are equally delicious! Moringa oleifera, the drumstick tree because of its long dangling seed pods has edible leaves which are highly nutritious and energizing. Lots of options, so let's plant!
