November Weather Days with rainfall: 6 Days Avg Max Temperature: 19.5 c Hours of Sunshine : 5.76 p/day The weather data is for guidance only and is the average monthly maximum for the Costa del Sol
The month of November means we start to think about Christmas whether we mean to or not! Shop decorations start to go up, Christmas adverts appear on the television and the kids shout wildly I want that! So to go with the trend, this months magazine does have a hint of Christmas. If you are entertaining at home now is the time to start thinking about ordering your turkey, assorted chocolate tins and brandy butter! If you are out for Christmas and New Year take a look through the magazine and you find some of the restaurants are already advertising their plans, so get booking to avoid disappointment. New this month, we have a restaurant opening up in Sayalonga see page 20. Inez from the Alberdini Restaurant has moved her Yoga and Pilates classes to a new studio in Competa see page 14. Perhaps use this as a chance to get leaner and strengthen up before the festive season. Also new management have taken over EL Rincon del Mateo in Canillas de Albaida see page 59. Los Caballos del Mosquin in Canillas del Albaida have extended their riding school and have a new professional teacher on board see page 59. So lots of new things happening as we approach the last months of 2015. Enjoy and keep reading. The Editor

NEWS IN SPAIN This months update

panish authorities are struggling to dispose of five million tyres dumped on a site close to a housing development north of Toledo. The 90,000 tonnes of tyres that have been dumped there since 2002 cover 117,000 square metres straddling the Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha regional boundaries. The dump, the largest in Europe, lies 400 metres from the El Quiñon housing development, one of the most notorious of the housing boom. Only about 1,000 of the planned 13,500 units are occupied, rendering it a virtual ghost town. The local authorities saidthey were putting out a tender to find a company with the capacity to shred the mountain of rubber, which poses a serious fire and environmental risk.

pain’s education ministry has drawn up plans to create courses in bullfighting as an optional subject in state schools. For the first time, bullfighting, as well as other subjects related to the spectacle, will be available for students aged 16 and older who move into vocational training after finishing their compulsory education. The move appears to represent a final attempt to defend the activity by Spain’s conservative government before elections in December. Students who complete the

course will receive a professional training certificate in "Tauromachy – bullfighting – and Auxiliary Livestock Activities" after they have learned the skills of bullfighting, the regulations applied to the event and the rules on breeding Spain’s fighting bulls. The full-time, two-year courses will be offered at a number of high schools around the country.

Spanish pensioner is set to receive a €3 million (£2.2m) inheritance after a DNA test was performed on the corpse of a wealthy landowner she had long suspected to be her father. Carmen Gordo, 69, who lives in the Andalucian town of Morón de la Frontera on a monthly widow’s pension of €700, was the daughter of a maid on the estate of the late Antonio Álvarez Villalón, but he had never recognised her as his daughter. On Tuesday, Mrs Gordo announced that a DNA test ordered by a judge last year had proved without doubt that Álvarez Villalón was in fact her father. According to Mrs Gordo’s lawyer, Fernando Osuna, the heiress will now request the inheritance due to her as the only child of Mr Álvarez Villalón, who had left his estate to a niece. “The economic aspect is nice, but I don’t need the money”, Mrs Gordo said. “What satisfies me is knowing that he was my father”.
hen an eccentric Spanish duchess married her long-time lesbian lover on her deathbed in 2008, the aristocrat’s three children saw it as the culmination of a betrayal of their right to inherit the family fortune.Luisa Isabel Álvarez de Toledo, the 21st Duchess of Medina Sidonia who was known as the “Red Duchess” for her opposition to the Franco regime, not only wed her secretary of 20 years, Liliana Dahlmann, but left her in charge of the foundation she had set up to ensure that the family’s historical private archive be maintained intact. As her lover’s widow and president of the Casa Medina Sidonia Foundation, Ms Dahlmann is now fending off a court challenge against the will by the duchess’s three children. The children, led by the eldest, Leoncio González de Gregorio, 50, say that their mother did not have the right to sign away their legitimate inheritance of the family palace and archive as Spanish law guarantees a portion of at least a third of a deceased parent’s property for their children.

eteran Spanish singer Julio Iglesias has joined a boycott of businesses relating to US presidential candidate Donald Trump over the billionaire’s controversial rhetoric on the subject of immigration. “I have sung many times in his casinos, but I won’t be doing it again. He is an a******”, Iglesias, who has been based in Miami for almost four decades, said in an interview with the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia. Referring to comments by Mr Trump, blaming Mexican immigrants for bring crime to the United States and his plan to deport millions of migrants who lack legal permits, Iglesias said: “He thinks he can fix the problems of the world by forgetting what immigrants have done for his country. He’s a clown! And my apologies to clowns.”

temperatures continue to rise. As the tundra’s permafrost melts, not only will it drastically alters the ecosystem but it will also release additional carbon. That carbon will ironically speed up global warming.
PLACES TO VISIT BEFORE THEY DISAPPEAR A few selected to make you think
V
enice, Italy In November 2009 was hit was a severe flood. Fish were swimming through St. Mark’s Square. Water levels reached 131 centimeters. Venice has long been sinking, but rising sea levels have made the situation more dire. The frequency of floods like the one in 2009 increases each year. Many wonder how much longer Venice can stay above water. It may be the first on this list to go. Great Barrier Reef located in Australia is so large that it can be seen from space. Unfortunately the Great Barrier Reef is disappearing at an increased rate because of climate change. Rising ocean temperatures, water pollution, oceans become acidic and cyclones continually pummel the reef and have caused mass coral bleaching. What took 8,000 years for nature to create could disappear in less the time. Saharan Africa by some estimates is growing at a rate of 0.5 miles per month. The desert is already the 2nd largest in the world. It could consume all of Northern Africa, altering the environment of a continent. Some contribute this to the rising of the earth’s temperature, which is causing the land to dry out rapidly. The Maldives are always on the “best places to go for vacation” list, because of the beauty and serene landscape and
16 The Grapevine
atmosphere. That may all be washed away soon. Maldives is the lowest-lying country in the world, with a maximum natural ground level of 7 feet 7 inches, and an average of only 4 feet 11 inches above sea level. If sea levels rise too much, the country could be the first nation to be engulfed by the ocean because of global warming. Patagonia is a land of untouched beauty, Patagonia is located at the most southern tip of South America. Patagonia could be dramatically altered by climate change. Many of its glaciers are quickly retreating because of rising temperatures and declining precipitation. Patagonia won’t disappear entirely, but its landscape may soon be altered beyond recognition if global warming persists. Bangladesh sits in a perfect storm of climactic conditions. It is set in the low-lying Ganges and Brahmaputra River Delta. About 50 percent of the area would be flooded if the sea level were to rise by 1 meter. Bangladesh also lies at the heart of the monsoon belt. Natural calamities, such as floods, tropical cyclones, tornadoes and tidal bores occur here almost every year leaving the country in shambles. Alaskan Tundra Global warming heats up the Arctic twice as fast as the rest of the world. This means Alaska’s beautiful northern tundra could vanish completely if
South Australia much like the Sahara in Africa, desertification threatens South Australia. Fresh water supplies are rapidly drying up across the entire region. The lack of water on the parched landscape increases the occurrence of wildfires. This also threatens the remaining agriculture, wildlife and hundreds of Australian homes. The European Alps sit at a lower altitude than the Rocky Mountains. Due to their lower altitude the glaciers and ski resorts are more susceptible to the effects of global warming. The famed glaciers are predicted to disappear by 2050. That seems like a long time from now but, once the Alps are gone, they will never return. The Congo Basin Tropical rain forests produce 40 percent of the world’s oxygen and serve as a vital source of food, medicine and minerals. The Congo Basin is the world’s second largest rain forest at more than 1.3 million square miles. According to the UN up to two-thirds of the forest and its unique plants and wildlife could be lost by 2040 unless more effective measures are taken to protect it. Extending across six nations, ten million acres of forest is degraded each year due to mining, illegal logging, farming, ranching, and guerilla warfare. Roads cut by loggers and miners have also enabled poachers and bush meat hunters to prey on endangered animals like mountain gorillas, forest elephants, bonobos, and okapis. As the forest shrinks, less carbon dioxide is absorbed, and rain decreases, adding to climate change.

they'd like to adopt them both! Tears were shed by us all and I think I did the Happy Dance. But our happiness didn't last long. We asked our vet to give the kittens a quick health check before they left for their new home and unfortunately, after listening to their lungs, she diagnosed them both with serious respiratory infections and prescribed an extensive regime of daily medication. She wasn't sure if they would survive. See Map Spot 18
ACTION FOR ANIMALS This months update
T
his month we'd like to thank John Dunford for producing the beautiful photo taken the first night of the Cómpeta Feria 2015, which was auctioned with proceeds going to Action for Animals. The highest bid at 101€ was made by two of our longstanding, generous supporters, Gordon & Sue Kind from Hotel Finca el Cerillo. We'd also like to thank Lisa Hurt-Jones and John Deverell at Galeria Luz de la Vida in Cómpeta, for coming up with the idea of an auction. Thank you all! Last month, two tiny kittens, just a few weeks old, were dumped outside our shop and left in full sun, in a tiny bird cage. The shop was open, but the heartless cowards who abandoned them didn't even bother to come in and speak to us and we had no idea they were there until a customer alerted us to the fact. We took the poor little mites into the safety of the shop and after plenty of cuddles, some food and water and a bigger, comfortable cage, they settled

down for a nap. As luck would have it, I'd received a phone call the previous day from Brian, who was looking to adopt a kitten, so I quickly telephoned him to see if he'd be interested in adopting one of these poor little kitties.
It was unthinkable to expect Brian and Carol to take on the responsibility of two poorly kittens, needing round the clock medication, so one of our volunteers, Julia Ruane and her partner Martin Thurlow came to the rescue and offered to foster the kittens until they were well enough to go to their new home. Thanks to Julia and Martin's loving care, both kittens survived and little Romeo and Juliet are now safe and sound in their new home. Another happy ending! Finally this month, I'd like to remind you that we'll have our annual stall at the Cómpeta Christmas Fair at the Paseo de Tradiciones on December 5th, where we'll have our everpopular raffle and over 100 prizes to be won on Tombola. And of course, Santa and his crazy little helpers will all be there to add to the fun. Don't miss it! Action for Animals Charity Shop, Avenida de la Constitución 59, Cómpeta.
An hour or so later, Brian and his wife Carol arrived at the shop. We knew they'd said they only wanted one kitten, so were a little concerned for the one which was about to be left behind once Brian and Carol had chosen which of the two they wanted to adopt. I can't tell you how overjoyed we all were when Brian and Carol announced that

Every time we came across an ingredient that we didn't have we hunted it down, soon fellow food-lovers started to request difficult to find ingredients. A selection of our favourite recipes are available on our website. We use over 20 companies to keep prices low and shelves full and have a source for everything from Asafoetida to Za'atar. We are both curry lovers and stock frozen takeaways from our favourite Indian restaurant the Taj Mahal. Living next door to a stash of your favourite takeaways is a huge temptation!
10 YEARS OF SUGAR AND SPICE A true Competa favourite.
I
t's so exciting to be celebrating our 10 year anniversary with so much currently going on in the shop. We opened December 8th 2005, blissfully unaware that we had chosen a bank holiday as our first day of trading. Still people trickled in to our shop which in those days sold British foods and a smattering of gifts and furniture. The following Easter we took our first trip to Morocco and opened a further room to accommodate the arabesque furniture and furnishings that we had purchased. As this area started to grow we made more contacts and gained access to a wider range of products. Meeting Mohamed, our main Moroccan agent, was a real turning point. Moroccan crafts are produced in the back streets of the souks by artisans in tiny workshops, each piece is individual, and having our man on the ground gave us quality control and better prices. We've been dealing with Mohammed for over 6 years and during this time as well as importing the usual
22 The Grapevine
Moroccan furniture he has facilitated the production of some beautiful pieces to either our, or customer designs. We now ship these pieces all over Spain and beyond. As the furniture side of our business started to grow we visited more trade shows, which increased not only our range of furniture but also giftware. We're always on the look-out for something a bit different and try to keep the ranges constantly changing to keep the shop interesting. Other significant changes in the early years were increasing our food range. Every specialist shop is driven by its customers. Neither Andy or I have a sweet-tooth and over the years our customers have helped us develop our range of baking products and also kept us in touch with what's hot in the biscuits and cakes front. One thing that we've learnt is that people like variety so as well as firm favourites we try to keep varying the selection. Although were not bakers we love to cook everything from Thai to Moroccan,
In 2009 we launched a new project, our ladies boutique. We aim to provide style at affordable prices, the clothes are individually picked and we shop every week so there is always plenty of choice and something new to see. With the start of the boutique we moved the furniture into an almacen across the road giving us more space. This Easter we expanded the furniture and giftware business with the launch of our website lacasabella.es. It's still very much a growing concern, we meet new suppliers regularly and add more items every week. Our latest category is “Modern Moroccan you can read more about it on either the Sugar and Spice or La Casa Bella web sites. Anything and everything on the website can be ordered via the shop and we deliver free within the Grapevine distribution area. 10 years on we're still really passionate about our business and feel as though we have a lot to celebrate. We wouldn't still be around without the support of our customers and we'd love new and existing customers to join us on the morning of Saturday 5th of December for some celebratory drinks and nibbles and some seasonal fun. The Christmas Market will also be in town so there will be plenty going on. For more information visit sugarandspice.es See adverts on pages 24 & 25

Kyero, Think Spain, Prime Location Overseas, Zoopla Overseas, The Move Channel and more - your property won't be reaching the global audience of buyers it needs in order to sell.
Ÿ Do you know how many enquiries your estate agent is getting on your property each month? If you don't have this information, it is impossible to decide if you need to adjust the marketing in any way (photos, price, feature advertising etc.). Ÿ If your property did not attracted viewings in the first 3 to 6 months of going on the market – do you know why this is? Get some feedback from your agent - you need to know!
Ÿ Changing the main photo of THE MUST READ TOP 10 TIPS TO SUCCESSFUL PROPERTY MARKETING IN SPAIN…
T
here is definitely a formula to successfully marketing Spanish property to a global audience of buyers. Currently, Spanish nationals are responsible for just 5% of property purchased in Spain, so attracting foreign buyers has never been more important. Equally, how foreign buyers search for properties for sale has changed beyond all recognition. Today, they expect to search for your property on cutting edge websites at the touch of a finger on their phone, tablet or laptop.
Ÿ There is a simple marketing formula, for these changing times Ÿ Does the main image of your property have internet curb appeal? Will buyers stop and click on your property to see more? The internet today, is yesterday's estate agency shop window – that photo has to be right!
30 The Grapevine
Ÿ Do all of the photos of your property show it off to its full potential? Do they make the property look light, bright and inviting or dark and cluttered?
Ÿ How inspiring is the property description of your property (and the town or village it is in or near)? Is it so good that it makes you want to buy your own house all over again? If not, perhaps it does not inspire buyers either!?
Ÿ Have you seen property details of your direct competition? It is essential to have seen the on-line details of at least 10 comparable properties. Unless you know your competition, it is impossible to set the correct asking price and impossible to know if you need to make any home improvements to décor etc.
Ÿ How far and wide is your property being advertised and to which nationalities? If your property is not advertised on
your property on all the portals/websites is a great way to generate new interest and can give your advert a fresh look every few months.
Ÿ Including beautiful photos of the village, town, countryside, beach or local lake is equally important as photos of the house. Buyers are attracted to areas, not just properties.
Ÿ Being aware of statistics such as enquiry levels (including the fluctuation of nationalities enquiring) helps significantly to tailor advertising in order to follow trends. Creative Property Marketing have their 'finger on the pulse' and work to this formula with their sellers. heaters, infrared waves don't heat the air, but do heat people, walls and furniture. You absorb the heating waves which makes you feel nice and cosy. Walls and furniture store the heat much longer than air and then release it back into the living space. In this way, the walls remain dry and mould has no chance to spread. Another advantage is that the air does not circulate, therefore no dust is lifted up into the air. Rheumatoid, Asthmatic patients & Allergy sufferers benefit greatly!

have a look. Big this year is FROZEN and Minions and La Boutique are going big on this too! La Boutique aren’t just preparing for the kids but the adults too. There will be many more items in store in the next few weeks such as mugs, tea towels with special messages on them in both English and Spanish and also the popular loose teas and tea sets are back. Lisa says there is a fabulous range of cards and extra special gorgeous gift wrap along with diaries, notepads and perpetual birthday calendars coming soon. There will be a beautiful selection of Christmas decorations, fairy lights, artificial trees and fantastic quality crackers which mean la Boutique will everything for the festive season.
LA BOUTIQUE IN COMPETA Preparing for Christmas
L
a Boutique will be celebrating their third Christmas this year. The Grapevine spoke to Lisa about the changes since they first opened. Although the major change for Lisa herself is she and her husband Jose who own the boutique, amongst other enterprises, have a beautiful baby boy called Jose. Lisa took maternity leave earlier on in the year to spend time at home with her new baby. However, she is now back to work and has made some great changes and investment in time for the Christmas period. La Boutique opened as a 3 floor department store but now they boast a further floor in the basement dedicated to bedding, where there is a showroom of mattresses, beds and of course bedding. Above this floor is the original baby section along with a more recent addition of Lingerie, a bathroom accessories area and travel section as before. The
34 The Grapevine
Kitchen floor is next which also now includes white goods, electrical items and a small garden section can be found at the back. The first floor or street level entrance is giftware and home ware and as a recent edition now stocks shoes and boots along with a selection of complementary items. Theses accessories have increased in their range for the winter and Christmas period, now not only stocking bags but scarf’s and cardigans too. The toy brochure will be out around the 2nd week of November which you can pick up from the store, take home and choose the gifts at your leisure or indeed let the kids choose!! You can fill out the order form, leave with La boutique and they will make sure the items are in store ready for you to pick up well in time for Christmas Day. Many Items are already in store and can been seen on the floor above street level just ask to go and
Lisa was keen to explain that although she has focused the store on stocking good quality items with well known brands such as Kenwood, Braun, Kicthenaid, Bodum and Smeg there will also be a range of quality stocking fillers starting from a 1euro too. She believes the emphasis on stocking UK brands is what makes them different. They can now buy these products in Spain with a Spanish plug and guarantee so there inst a need for the expats to shop on line to the UK and receive the items with a different plug and no come back. Two of the most popular items bought in the kitchen section are egg poachers and slow cookers something which would have been hard to get hold of in Spain only a few years ago! La Boutique has definitely changed over the last few years so if you haven’t wandered around all the floors for a while, now is definitely the time to visit again, especially as you start to think about your Christmas purchases!

IS RED WINE REALLY HEALTHY? Of course it is!
N
ew research has suggested that the best way to lose weight is to drink plenty of red wine. The research, from Washington State University, showed that an ingredient found in grapes, berries and red wine called 'resveratrol' can help turn your flab into calorie-burning 'brown' fat. With researchers divided on whether or not red wine should be considered healthy, we take a closer look at the arguments for and against regular consumption of red wine. THE EVIDENCE FOR Red wine could... 1. Stop weight gain As well as the recent study from Washington State University, in 2012 researchers in Korea found that another compound found in red grapes called 'piceatannol' has the ability to block the processes that cause fat cells to grow. 2. Prevent cancer Scientists have revealed that 'resveratrol' may also help to prevent head and neck cancer. Researchers found that the compound has the potential to kill the damaged cells that can lead to
36 The Grapevine
certain cancers. 3. Stop bug bites If you have a bed bug problem, drinking a glass of red wine before bed could be the solution. Research from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, found that bed bugs prefer blood that isn't tainted by alcohol. 4. Prevent memory loss Using rats, researchers at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine found that reseveratrol helped prevent age-related memory decline. Once the rats who had been treated with resveratrol were two years old, they had improved learning, memory and mood function. 5. Help you live longer Scientists have found that resveratrol suppresses molecules that cause inflammation and compounds in the blood which interfere with the production of insulin, thus helping us to live longer and healthier lives. The researchers, from the University of Buffalo, also found resveratrol reduced the development of type 2 diabetes and strokes. THE EVIDENCE AGAINST But red wine could also...
1. Hamper muscle healing Though resveratrol does help to slow down the ageing process, if taken in high doses it can have the opposite effect. Researchers at the Manchester Metropolitan University said: "We analysed if resveratrol was able to promote the repair of muscle and reduce oxidative stress where free radicals - destructive molecules speed up the ageing process. "At low doses, resveratrol did help the regeneration. However, if the dose is higher, it doesn't mitigate ageing from oxidative stress and even hampers the repair cycle." 2. Increase the chance of certain cancers Despite some research suggesting that drinking red wine could prevent certain cancers, a study published in Alcohol and Alcoholism found that drinking wine could increase the risk for breast cancer. 3. Lead to alcoholism Scientists have warned that to experience the potential health benefits of resveratrol, you would need to drink an entire case of red wine each day, which could lead to alcoholism.

We live in a country where such food is ever available, continual variety is on offer, from local growers, excellent green grocers, friends and neighbours who grow their own and of course we might just realise the benefits of having a fruit tree or two in our own gardens
PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY By Jane Gudge
W
hen we own something we are the one responsible for its care and upkeep, the care-taker, the steward; This applies to all possessions, our clothes, our car, our house and particularly our body. Having something precious, something unique and valuable would surely mean we would respect and tend to it well. Treating our possessions with scant regard, letting them fall into disrepair is not admirable or honourable; it is an indication of ignorance laziness and cruelty. Do we drive our car into the ground never checking tyres, oil, windscreen or hydraulics? Allow our house to rot and disintegrate? Hardly! So why do we treat our human systems so poorly? Failing to meditate, refusing to exercise, imbibing food and chemicals that
are utterly destructive and damaging most of the time? Stating “it is my body to do as I wish” is balderdash; falling sick, becoming infirm affects so many others, family, neighbours, friends to say nothing of the medical profession and all the attendant time and cost involved. We have to step up to the mark and accept that with regard to the health of our mind, body and spirit, due diligence is to be our daily practice. We need to re-consider what is healthy eating. We eat foods that are addictive; loaded with salt, fat and sugar, made from refined grains and enzyme depleted. We are designed to eat Whole Fresh Ripe Raw Plants which are health improving, happiness creating and totally life enhancing and they taste wonderful.
We need to eat the freshest of foods. We need to eat local food and we need to eat it RAW. No food is nutritionally improved by cooking it. Period. Heating food impairs it. Re-heating it causes greater damage and the higher the temperature the greater the detriment; Damaged food is toxic and dangerous to our bodily systems; Buying convenience foods from the supermarkets is destroying our health. The only convenience is for the stores who are raking in the money for this over-priced, poor quality garbage. increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.
Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es
The mean average monthly salary in Spain in 2013 was just €1,324 while 34 per cent of the country's 16,682,861 employees earned the minimum wage of €645. Tax office figures show that almost half of Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called

Mel treating her first client of the evening
Marina with her freshly painted nails
E.G.O. PAMPER NIGHTS IN NEW! from Mel at E.G.O in Competa
M
el at EGO is now offering “Pamper Nights and instead of Mel explaining the idea to me we decided to hold one so I could experience it first hand! All you need is a minimum of six people and a venue. Whoever volunteers to be host and provides a few nibbles will then receive a discount on the treatments from Mel. The cost is 15 euro per person to everyone but the host and this gives you two treatments throughout the evening. That is the basic idea but what you make of the night in, is really up to you! Six of us organised this evening last month and the host was selected through convenience and location to all the group. We all brought a bottle of wine and a few nibbles but Lisa, the host, laid on a fab spread of pizzas and dips and Alison had made a chocolate cake for us to finish with .... perfect food for a girlie night in! Mel brought all her kit from the Salon including her treatment table so we could properly relax. Mel laid out her treatment menus on the table for us to choose from Careful consideration was given
54 The Grapevine
to this while enjoying a few drinks first! Menu 1 included Mini facial, Mini manicure or Mini pedicure. Menu 2 included Eye lash tint, Eyebrow tint, Eyebrow shape or Hand mask with massage. You could choose 1 treatment from each section this allowed Mel to treat each person over the course of the evening effectively so as one person was soaking or drying she could move onto someone else. All of us chose different treatments although the mini facial proved most popular. I didn't ask for this one however it looked extremely relaxing and soothing. I would suggest having this early on in the evening due to the risk of nodding off later after a few drinks and the massage!!I I chose an eyelash tint and a mini manicure, both things I don't usually have done, so the evening was a real treat for me too. The eyelash tint went well and has lasted for more than a couple of weeks. I did wake up the next morning thinking i hadn't taken my make up off so I did definitely notice the difference. The mini
manicure was great my nails have never looked so good! Mel worked well between us all while we sat about drinking, laughing and eating. Marina had an eye brow tint which gave her eye brows great definition she really did look fab along with her manicure she looked set to go out on the town! The party was a real success we all had a fun time whist feeling relaxed and more beautiful than we arrived. Mel is happy to come to anyone’s house for a party as long as there is a minimum of six people. If anybody prefers she is happy to host a party at the Salon although the minimum number still applies. The idea is to have a girlie night in but there is no reason why after being pampered you cant go out. It could also be a nice idea to invite Mel to provide treatments where a few friends are getting ready together before a party, wedding or special occasion. The 6 of us enjoyed the evening and if you have one I am sure you will do too. See advert opposite

Día de Muertos, Mexico
WHERE TO GO IN NOVEMBER This is an excerpt from Lonely Planet's A Year of Festivals. Día de Muertos (Day Of The Dead) Location: Oaxaca, Mexico Dates: 1–2 November Mexico’s Carnivalesque remembrance of departed souls is one of the world’s most universally familiar festivals. Its papier-mâché skeletons and candy skulls are as recognisable as the jack-o’-lanterns at Halloween. Westerners find the Latino rave from beyond the grave, with its upbeat treatment of immortality, both fascinating and confronting. La Diablada Location: Puno, Peru Dates: Week leading up to 5 November There are various stories about the roots of La Diablada, in which men dressed as demons are added to Puno’s usual population of women in multilayered dresses and bowler hats. According to one version of events, the horned parade hits the streets in remembrance of the departure of the devilish conquistadors in the late 19th century.

Fete Gede Location: National Cemetery, Port-au-Prince, Haiti Dates: 1–2 November The Voodoo festival of Fete Gede is the religion’s version of Day of the Dead, a major difference being that the Haitian spirits are friskier. Indeed, there are stories of the Gede, as the spirits are known, gatecrashing the president and demanding money. He paid up, of course. Bonfire Night Location: High St, Lewes, East Sussex, England Date: 5 November Bonfire Night is a classically English affair where burning effigies and fireworks illuminate the winter night in memory of centuries-old skulduggery. The story behind the event is as gripping as the Catherine wheels. In the early 17th century, some English folk were hoping that their new monarch, James I, would relax the hardline Protestantism favoured by his predecessors. One group of Catholics was particularly disappointed when this situation failed to materialise.
So, naturally, they decided to blow up the Houses of Parliament, with the king, his eldest sons and most of parliament inside the building.
Festa del Cornuto (Festival Of The Horned One) Location: Rocca Canterano, Italy Dates: November The event has no truck with lovelorn moping. Rolling down the main street on allegorical floats, costumed actors recite satirical compositions about the whole ugly business of betrayals and bust-ups. The festival has an unofficial patroness, an honour for which self-respecting celebrities would surely swap an Oscar. America’s Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton, has been lucky enough to hold the title. Pirate Festival Location: George Town Harbour, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands Dates: Ten days in mid-November The only festival to take place on all three of the Cayman isles, the Pirate Festival is geared towards

infant swashbucklers. The ten-day programme of music, dances, costumes, games and controlled mayhem begins with a mock invasion. Two replica 17th-century galleons, accompanied by other boats and even the odd submarine, all swarming with rogues, carry out a ‘surprise’ attack on George Town Harbour. Räbechilbi Turnip Festival Location: Richterswil, Switzerland Date: Second Saturday in November Apart from being used as a phallic plot device in Blackadder, the turnip has never enjoyed much limelight. In an attempt to correct this criminal neglect, the good people of Richterswil, a small town on Lake Zürich, organise an annual celebration of the vegetable. Pushkar Camel Mela (Pushkar Camel Fair) Location: Pushkar, Rajasthan, India Dates: The festival concludes on the full moon of the Hindu lunar month of Kartika, which falls in October or November Rajasthan’s most famous festival is less and less about the eponymous camels and more about a rollickin’ good time, though the dunes outside of Pushkar are still a sight (and a smell) to behold when the cameleers come to town. Drawing in 50,000 camels and 200,000 people, the fair is ostensibly a time when Rajasthani farmers gather to buy and sell their camels, cattle and horses – most of the trading, however, is completed in the days leading up to the fair. Surin Elephant Round-up Location: Sri Narong Stadium, Surin, Thailand Dates: Third weekend in November Thousands of Thais and travellers stampede into provincial Surin for the country’s biggest elephant show. The monumental mammals are coaxed to play soccer, sprint

at up to 35km/h and pick up tiny objects with their trunks. One takes on 70 beefy soldiers at tugof-war. There are demonstrations of log-pulling, a job for which Thais commonly use elephants, and re-enactments of old hunting and war scenes featuring vintage pachyderm costumes. Tori-No-Ichi (Day of the Rooster) Location: Otori shrines, Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan Dates: Every 12 days in November Taking place on the Days of the Rooster (according to the Chinese zodiac), this event normally happens twice a year. In the occasional years when it occurs three times, superstitious doomsayers believe there will be many fires. However, it’s invariably an upbeat occasion, where the festival-goers visit Otori shrines to ask for abundant harvests and shedloads of sales. Markets spring up around the shrines – the largest, in Tokyo’s Asakusa area, attracts tens of thousands of visitors to some 200 stalls. Guru Nanak Jayanti Location: Golden Temple, Amritsar, Punjab, India Dates: Indian lunar month of Aghan (November/December) Among the prakash divas (birthdays of Sikhism’s 10 great gurus), the most important are the ceremonies held for the religion’s founder. All over Punjab, India’s Sikh state, the turban-wearing Sikhs visit gurdwaras (temples). The celebrations are most impressive at Amritsar’s beautiful Golden Temple, the most revered gurdwara and home of the original copy of Sikh holy book the Guru Granth Sahib. Perang Topat (Rice Cake War) Location: Lingsar, Lombok, Indonesia Date: Sixth full moon in the Sasak calendar (November/December) At this quirky harvest festival, the Hindu and Muslim residents of Lombok, east of Bali, unite to pelt
each other with boiled rice. The food fight takes a week of preparation. On the big day, the Sasak Wektu Telu community joins its Hindu neighbours at a singularly appropriately location, the Pura Lingsar. This 18thcentury temple was built by Hindus, but the temple compound also contains the Kemaliq, a Muslim shrine. Lopburi Banquet Location: Lopburi, Thailand Date: One day in November In Lopburi, 90km north of Bangkok, take extra care of your valuables, because the town is overrun with simian kleptomaniacs. Despite their lightfingered ways, residents are so fond of the long-tailed macaques that a local hotelier treats them to an annual feast. Thanksgiving Location: New York City, New York, USA Date: Fourth Thursday in November Thanksgiving is a most renowned festival, thanks to firsthand experience for North Americans and to slushy Hollywood movies for the rest of the planet. The holiday is up there with Christmas as an excuse for gorging on turkey and snoozing in front of the TV. Cooper Capers Location: Merwin Village Rd, Ariel, Washington, USA Date: Saturday after Thanksgiving Code-named ‘Norjak’ by the FBI, it’s America’s only unsolved hijacking investigation. On 24 November 1971, a nondescript man held up a Boeing 727 with a bomb threat and parachuted into the night with $200,000 strapped to his waist. DB Cooper was gone, leaving only a mother-ofpearl tie clip. The lakeside town of Ariel in Washington State, where authorities initially thought Cooper had landed, became the base for the search party.

the higher disciplines in classical dressage. Emphasis is on the cooperation with the horse instead of implying force, violence, punishment and pain.
They are extending the existing riding school to double the size (50 x 20m) in order to meet the international measurements for a working size area. (In this moutanous region it is a quite an ambitious and costly project. Flat land in the mountains isn't that easily obtained but Eva and the owners of other horses homed at the stables grouped together to fund this new facility. Eva hopes to be operational for November along with the arrival of a professional riding teacher for the winter months. The teacher is an Austrian international and very well known rider; Angelika Miki. She has her own equestrian academies in Hungary and Austria and meets the profile of the Los Caballos del Mosquin concept which focuses on natural horseman ship, body language and horse wellfare all the way through from the very basic principles in handling a horse to
At Los Caballos del Mosquin their wish is to make horse men aware of the trend of horse welfare which Eva believes is very much needed in the area! Their aim is to make the riders (locals as well as foreigners) be aware that with a positive attitude you can climb mountains with your horse with both rider and horse enjoying the journey. Their goal is to to ban the Cerreta a metal nose band shaped as a saw, laying on the bare nose bone which causes the horse constant pain. It is used commonly in these kinds af areas and it dates from the age of Don Quijote, (the middle age) when the horse was used as a warrior in wars. It is prohibited in all other western countries and punished by law .
58 The Grapevine
The new facility and new teacher is a great advantage to the area. The riding school is suitable for those who own horses and who
want a flat area to ride, practice technique and fine tune skills. The area can be hired or booked with a teacher and prices charged can be on an hourly, monthly or a daily basis. Anyone is welcome to bring their horse, home it at the stables if this is easier and use the riding area and make use of the professional instructor. The riding school is not really directed at beginners but more intermediate and advance levels. Eva's horses are able to take beginners out on treks in the summer when the horses have less energy but during the winter these horses are more suited to intermediate riders and above. Eva is keen to add to the horse owners that she collaborates with in order to invite further professional riders to the stable or specialists within the equine industry. With a bigger space and more horse owners involved the stables offers further possibilities of other specialists visiting from around the country and abroad. The new riding school also allows the possibility of jumping practice which Eva explained is something the younger generation prefer to do! Learning to do this is in a controlled and large flat space in the mountains isn't easy so she hopes this will encourage riders to use her riding school to practice instead. Los Caballos del Mosquin has been in its current situation in Canillas del Albaida since 1997 and offers a number of services including various treks of different length of time from a couple of hours to a few days depending on what you want to see and level of proficiency. Eva offers a livery program which can be to home a horse on a long term of short term basis and also to a small extent she breeds horses. If you would like to find out more about any of the services on offer and the new riding school contact Eva see advert opposite

7. Whole wheat is truly a great source of fibre. According to a study, men should intake about 38 grams of whole wheat every day, and women should receive about 25 grams. However, have in mind that whole wheat is not the ONLY source of fibre in nature. The truth is, it has been over hyped during the years, but they are still very healthy. It is also recommended to eat corn brain baked goods since it’s packed with fibre as well.
10 GREATEST HEALTH MYTHS This time these ones are true! 1. Fat people are happier. Now, don’t get this the wrong way. It is only a study, and you need to keep exercising. But in case you thought that fat, jolly people are just a myth, the truth is- they are real. According to a study, women who are fat are happier than those who are not, and it’s all because of estrogen. Body fat protects women against negative mood, or in other words, the fatter she is, the happier she gets. Don’t give up your gym, though.
4. Red wine is really good for your health. That, of course, doesn’t mean that you need to drink a bottle of wine. One glass of red wine is just enough. The reason for this are all the antioxidants in the red wine. These antioxidants reduce the amount of free radicals that can harm our health. Also, a glass of red wine is healthy because of polyphenols, which help prevent cancer and degeneration diseases.
2. Your mum probably always told you to eat bananas because they are packed with potassium. We know that because our mums told us the same thing. But this is actually true! The only thing that is not true is - there are foods that contain more potassium than bananas. Bananas are definitely the most delicious, but you can also eat squash or sweet potatoes, because these veggies contain more potassium than bananas!
5. Can a broken heart be cured? According to the researches at the University of Alabama, you can cure a broken heart with some melatonin and vasotocin. When you love someone intensely, your love is associated with certain behavioural changes such as euphoria, obsessiveness and craving for closeness. This is all induced by the pea-sized pineal gland which produces melatonin. So giving hormones to the love victims can be a cure to nonreturned love. Or you can eat tons of ice-cream.
3. It is true that tight buns and ponytails can make your hair fall out- permanently. We say permanently, because the natural hair cycle involves the rest periodor the period when hair doesn’t grow. However, if you cause too much tension to your hair, or you constantly pull it, this can lead to scarring hear loss. In other words, if you always wear tight buns and ponytails, the chances are, your hair is going to fall out more.
6. Sometimes your eyes just need a little rub here and there, but do it gently and try to be as effective with a few gentle rubs as you can. Rubbing your eyes definitely causes wrinkles, because the skin around your eyes is extremely delicate and thin. You can easily develop too many crow’s feet, and we are certain that it’s not what you want.

8. You probably already know that taking hot showers is not good for your skin. But did you know that is has a negative impact on your brain? Yep, according to a study, taking frequent hot showers can be bad for your brain. Manganese is a metallic element that gets into water after contact with rocks and minerals from the ground. When you drink water with normal manganese levels, it doesn’t influence your health. However, when you breath it in, it can have a deteriorating impact on your brain. 9. Rinsing your hair with beer can really make it stronger! The reason for this is scientific: the barley and hops we use to make beer are high in vitamins and proteins. These ingredients help hair appear stronger, shinier and thicker. Also, alcohol is a great cleansing agent. So next time you want to wash your hair, grab a beer and use it on your hair. It’s definitely one of the best and cheapest hair thickening products. 10. Nuts can cure toothache. Charles Weber from North Carolina was the first person who tried cashew nuts as a cure for toothache. Actually, her based his research on gram-positive bacteria which cause tooth decay in the first place. These bacteria are killed by chemicals in cashew apples, cashew nuts and cashew shell oil! According to Weber, these chemicals in cashew nuts can kill bacteria in 15 minutes.

TAPAS What it is and its origin. What are Tapas? Tapas are snacks, canapés or finger food that originated in Spain. Tapas come in many different forms and can vary from town to town! But, what are they? Answer: Tapas can be practically anything from a chunk of tuna, cocktail onion and an olive skewered on a long toothpick, to piping hot meat with sauce served in a miniature clay dish - or anything in between. Tapas are served day in and day out in every bar and café in Spain. So much a part of the culture and social scene that the Spanish people invented the verb tapear
76 The Grapevine
which means to go and eat tapas! In most regions, you must order and pay for a ración or serving, but in the province of Granada, one small tapa is complimentary with each round of drinks ordered. Tapas keep the Spanish fueled for their long journeys from bar to bar before their midday meal, as well as in the evening before dinner. The Origin of Tapas There are several stories about the origin of tapas, which are a part of the folklore: It is told that King Alfonso X, el Sabio or “the Wise One,” made sure that Castilian taverns served wine accompanied by something to eat, so that the wine would not go straight to the clients' heads.
Another story claims that while on a long trip, King Alfonso had stopped to rest in the town of Ventorillo del Chato in the southern province of Cádiz, and he ordered a glass of Jerez or sherry. There was a gusty wind, so the inn keeper served him his glass of sherry covered by a slice of ham to prevent the sherry from getting dirty. King Alfonso apparently liked it, and when he asked for a second glass, he requested another tapa or “cover” just like the first. Whatever the true origin of tapas, prepare one or several, then enjoy them like the Spanish do – with a glass of wine and a relaxed attitude.

rawing up a list of Spain’s prettiest villages is risky business: there’s always someone who will blame you for not having included their own hometown. But there is one way to do it. In March 2011, several of these picturesque locations got together

historical center, and certified architectural or natural heritage sites. Successful candidates must also meet quality standards in connection with cleanliness, building conservation, traffic restrictions, parking space, conservation of green areas and limited billboard space. While there are 24 municipalities on the list, this piece focuses on 12 of them. 1.Albarracín (Teruel) Popular architecture reigns supreme in this well-preserved mountain village in Teruel. Earthy colors, latticework, roof tiles and narrow winding streets of Arab origin all converge on a castle that looks out from an altitude of 1,182 meters above sea level. In 1961 the entire town was declared a national monument. Population: 1,102 in 2012. 2 Alcalá del Júcar (Albacete) As it winds its way through the limestone chasms and crests of Albacete province, the Júcar carves out one of the wildest landscapes in all of Castilla LaMancha: the Hoz del Júcar, or Gorge of the Júcar. The highlands are home to villages such as Alcalá del Júcar, with whitewashed houses and poplarlined avenues that turn yellow in the fall. Population: 1,346 in 2012. 3 Ayllón (Segovia) The medieval town of Ayllón affords visitors a combination of monuments, landscape and history. This place has seen its share of historical figures drop by, including Álvaro de Luna, a 15thcentury Constable of Castile, the English-born Catherine of Lancaster, Queen of Castile, and the missionary saint Vicente Ferrer. Population: 1,398 in 2012. 4 Calaceite (Teruel) In the mid-1970s, a small colony of artists and writers that included Chile’s José Donoso and the

Spanish poet Ángel Crespo settled down in this harshly beautiful village of Matarraña county in Teruel. Population: 1,105 in 2012. 5 Cantavieja (Teruel) Aragón is a land of mountains and hidden villages. One of the hilliest ones is Cantavieja, the historical capital of the Alto Maestrazgo area and a refuge for General Cabrera during the Carlist wars that pitted supporters of Isabel II against defenders of Carlos, pretender to the throne during the 19th century. Population: 745 in 2012. 6 Frías (Burgos) This is probably the most charming location in all of Burgos, a well-preserved collection of narrow streets and houses with timber frameworks perched atop a limestone crag. The village is accessed via a medieval fortified bridge over the Ebro river. Population: 277 in 2012. 7 La Alberca (Salamanca) IThe name of La Alberca (Salamanca) evokes popular architecture, embroidery work and the bright red of the geraniums that line the balconies. The word “picturesque” seems made specifically for a village that nestles inside the natural park of Las Batuecas, where every evening at sundown the Moza de Ánimas walks the streets ringing a bell and asking the locals to pray for the souls in purgatory – a tradition that remains unchanged since the 16th century. Population: 1,192 in 2012. 8 Lastres (Asturias) The fishing village of Lastres, in the northern region of Asturias, is so striking that it served as the set for the Spanish television series Doctor Mateo, featuring Gonzalo de Castro and Natalia Verbeke. Tourism authorities have created a route that stops along all the spots featured in the show, including the doctor’s home, the bakery, the school, the tavern, the
beaches and the local radio station. 9 Lucainena de las Torres (Almería) A stroll down the streets of Lucainena brings back its Morisco past. The “Torres” in the placename makes reference to the seven watchtowers that used to flank the town, which is now finding a new source of revenue in rural tourism and spa services. Vestiges of Lucainena’s mining past are still visible along its Vía Verde, which also affords views of the Sierra de Alhamilla. Population: 650 in 2013. 10 Maderuelo (Segovia) This is one of the oldest municipalities in Segovia, and was once a bulwark between Castile and the Muslim territories beyond. Maderuelo extends along a hill on a curve of the Riaza river. After walking under the arch that separates the defensive wall from the inner city, visitors step into San Miguel square, which boasts a church and homes with Romanesque and Gothic façades. Population: 136 in 2012. 11 Medinaceli (Soria) Scratch a little under Medinaceli’s surface and you will find yourself in Rome. Under this medieval town looking down from its cliff, there are still remains of the old Occilis in the shape of Roman mosaics. Its Roman arch, which opens up onto the Castilian plains, is the only one in Spain with a triple arcade. Population: 810 in 2012. 12 Morella (Castellón) Mountainous Morella seduces visitors with its medieval walls and white homes lying at the foot of a rocky castle. The web of cobblestoned streets adds charm to the capital of the Maestrazgo, a historically rich area in Castellón province. Population: 2,739 in 2012.

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH To Dye For - Spanish Red – Naturally
I
’m sure that many of you campo gardeners will have at least a stand or two of prickly pear cactus (opuntia ficus-indica) on your land. It's long been used as an immensely tough and natural spiny hedge to deter marauders – 2-legged and 4legged – and, of course, it provides those delicious, if somewhat difficult to harvest, red fruits. But, if you think that's the end of their usefulness, then you'd be very wrong. In fact, if you're looking for a small income without any great investment, using only natural products, then read on!
The adult female cochineal insect is soft bodied and purplish-red, up to 5mm long. They live in large colonies on the pads of the prickly pear cactus, secreting a white wax over their bodies to protect themselves from attack, rain and excessive temperature fluctuations. Until this white wax secretion is scraped away and their outer body covering is punctured, the brilliant carmine colouring, caused by carminic acid, is not noticed. Cochineal colouring is produced from the dried and crushed bodies of the insects. Around 150,000 insects are needed to produce 1 kg of the rich crimson dye.
back to European nations who were thrilled with the rich red dye – it quickly became known as Spanish Red. By the 17th century it was being traded as far away as India and stock exchanges chartered its course. For over 200 years the Mexicans maintained a monopoly, prohibiting export of the insect and preventing foreigners from visiting the cochineal producing farms. A red curtain concealed the whole business. In fact, Europeans thought that the dye was produced from the red fruits of the prickly pear cactus! Recognition that the dye actually came from the crushed bodies of insects didn't come until the late 1700's.
We mostly hate scale insects for the damage they do to our plants but one of their members, dactylopius coccus, more colloquially known as the cochineal insect, can be farmed to produce that natural dye, cochineal. The history is fascinating.
The Aztec and Maya of Central America probably started the cochineal farming and trading. In Mexico it was highly valued and became their second export commodity – silver being the first. Shortly after the Aztec nations were conquered and settled by the Spanish, cochineal was sent
The Mexican War of Independence loosened their monopoly on the little red insects and by the late 1800's production had extended to Spain, North Africa, Guatemala and the Canary Islands. Production peaked around 1870 when around 3 million kilos were being produced

annually. But progress was on its way! During the 19th century, less expensive synthetic dyes were introduced causing a major rocking in Spanish financial markets and the loss of one of their best commodities. Breeding became largely limited to small cottage industries more interested in retaining tradition than for any great market value. But, as so often happens, the pendulum swung: synthetic red dyes were recognised as carcinogenic. Peru, the Canary Isles, Chile and Mexico, once again, are now large exporters of the natural dye and their main markets are in France, Japan and Italy. Lanzarote has revitalised the ancient industry, opening cochinilla tourist routes where the farming techniques can be observed. Local designers are using the deliciously soft colourings in their silks and wools. Today, apart from a fabric dye, it is also used in cosmetics, paints and as a food colouring in alcoholic and soft drinks, deserts, preserves, sweets and cheeses. On average, we consume a couple of drops of carminic acid each year in our foodstuffs without realising it. A prickly pear/cochineal farm is known as a nopalry; small basketware nests, called zapotecs, are fixed on the cacti. These nests contain fertile females awaiting fertilisation by the males, who – job done - will then die. The total life cycle is 3 months. At this stage the insects have to be manually harvested – you'll need patience for this one! The insects are killed by immersion in hot water then

dried to about 30% of their original body weight. Exposure to sunlight, or artificial drying in an oven will produce slight variations in the colour achieved. The pulverised bodies produce cochineal extract: a purer colour (carmine) is achieved with the addition of ammonia.
If you fancy having a go at nopal farming, look after your scale insects – natural predators are ladybirds, lacewings, various wasps, some birds, reptiles and rats. Use appropriate controls. Starting your farm is easy. One pad from a mature plant is all you need; in fact, if you look around the base of an old plant, you will often see pads that have fallen away from the mother plant, landed on soil and rooted where they land. It´s that easy! You can plant them upright but they will also send out roots from any point of the pad that touches ground. Obviously this is a plant that will live in poor and hot baking conditions though an odd soaking in summer will keep it looking green, fresh, vigorous and stately. And this year, certainly in Spain, you have a head-start because the population of cochineal insect is at its highest for years – you see it everywhere. The majority of prickly pear cactus stands are smothered in the waxy coating of
thousands of them – they are having a population explosion. Ironically, I´ve recently been asked a lot for the best method of getting rid of them and, admittedly, they don´t look pretty. If the infestation is really bad, take a pressure hose to it; that will clean away a lot. Then apply a 5% solution of neem oil or a soft-soap based natural insecticide which will penetrate their waxy coating but you will need to be persistent with applications as new generations will be hatching. Or, look at it a different way; the potential is here for a cottage industry with a difference and steeped in history: the host plants are so easy to look after and, when you look at those gorgeously soft hues produced, you just have to fall in love with those little red bichos! NEW TRAFFIC REGULATION Children are required by law to travel in the back seats of cars from this Thursday, October 1, according to a new traffic regulation. Youngsters of 4'6” (1.36m) or less in height must not travel in the front seat, and should be in booster seats or similar suitable for their age, height and weight. Three exceptions apply – where the vehicle does not have back seats; where all back seats are occupied by children of identical characteristics, and where child restraint or seating systems cannot physically be installed because they would not fit. As well as being part of a European Union directive on passenger safety, the new regulation responds to scientific research carried out in Spain showing that children's safety is severely compromised by travelling in the front of a car. Child restraint or booster seat systems reduce crash deaths by 75%, and cut the risk of serious injuries by 90%. Spain's traffic department even recommends using booster seats and remaining in the back of the car until the child is at least 4'11” (1.5m) in height, even though many adults are no taller than this.
