Didn't we have lovely weather in September? Let's hope it continues into October. Although the summer was late in arriving it does seem to have just kept going! However, despite this, we have put together a short feature on how to prepare for the up and coming winter season. Most of you, that aren't new to the area, know by now that although there are still lovely and sunny days throughout the winter it does in fact start to get quite cold. Also, the rain, especially in the last few years, can be torrential. On pages 52 though to 55 we have detailed some ways in which to prepare for the colder and wetter days from putting up guttering to heating your home and also wait for it...... shopping for Christmas! Christmas isn't that far away but perhaps I will leave writing about that until the next issue! Instead there are plenty of other events happening in the area before then, such as the Multicultural Night of music in Canillas de Albaida, a David Goodland talk in Cómpeta and various bike rides and walks amongst the inland villages. More information on all these events and details of auditions for another CAMPO production are in this month magazine so enjoy and keep reading.

News in Spain ANOTHER SHIPMENT OF COCAINE INSIDE PLASTIC BANANAS SEIZED IN SPAIN. The National Police have seized almost half a ton of cocaine which had been smuggled into Spain hidden inside plastic bananas transported in a normal cargo of the fruit. It’s a method which has been used by drug smugglers before, leading to four arrests after 162 kilos of cocaine were seized at Algeciras Port this January. The Interior Ministry said in a press release that the drugs were imported from Ecuador in containers of bananas by an import company which was set up for that purpose in San Roque, Cádiz province. The group is understood to have sent over a number of containers of real fruit from Ecuador before sending the cargo of cocaine. The gang’s rented warehouse in San Roque was kept under surveillance and raided after three containers were transported there at the end of June, where plastic bananas containing 448 kilos of cocaine were discovered amongst the fruit.Three people were later arrested in Roldán, Murcia, and in Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid, followed by a fourth suspect who was taken into custody in August in Alicante. MIJAS TO BAN SMOKING IN THE SIERRA YEAR ROUND Mijas Town Hall has announced it is to prohibit smoking, bar-b-ques and bonfires in the sierra all year round. Bar-b-ques on non building private land will now need municipal permission. The Town Hall also will revise the current emergency plan over the next six months to help future battles against fires. Undeveloped land will be cleaned under the scheme, and all the rural roads will be added to GPS systems so ‘any emergency vehicle can easily reach its correct destination’. It follows the recent fire, which it has now been determined was started by a bonfire, which

X-RAY REVEALS STOLEN DIAMOND SWALLOWED IN MARBELLA RESTUARANT A man who stole a 12,000 € diamond from a Marbella restaurant swallowed the gem to try and avoid detection by police. However the police found the diamond after carrying out a series of x-rays. The diamond and other items were stolen from two British women dining at the restaurant in Nueva Andalucía, who left their handbag on a chair next to the table. Minutes later it was gone. All the items reported missing, including 2,000 € and 400 pounds sterling were found inside a car containing four men which was stopped by the police. The only missing item was the diamond, but that was found with the x-rays. In total four people have been arrested by National Police based in the Torremolinos - Benalmádena police station. ALMUÑECAR MAN GETS FIVE AND A HALF YEARS IN PRISON FOR ROBBING PIZZA DELIVERY MAN The court in Motril has sentenced a man from Almuñécar to five and a half years in jail for the injuries he caused to a pizza delivery man. The court heard how the man hit the pizza man with a motorbike helmet in the street, to steal the takings he was carrying, after the man refused to give him one of his pizzas. The beating the pizza man received left him unconscious, and witnesses said that the aggressor was shouting ‘give me the money or I’ll kill you’. The victim was in hospital for a day and took 60 days to recover fully from his injuries. Source: www.typicallyspanish.com

Weird and Wonderful from around the world!

wo US men face charges in Denver for allegedly driving around with the body of a friend after discovering him dead. Mr Young discovered Jarrett's body on 27 August 2011 when he arrived at his friend's home after being offered the chance to stay there for a while, according to a statement of probable cause released by Denver police. Instead of calling the police, he went to the restaurant where Mr Rubinson worked. The two men, both friends with Jarrett, put his body in the back seat of Mr Rubinson's car and took it to Teddy T's and Sam's No 3 - both bars in Denver - before taking the body back to Jarrett's home. They continued to Viva Burrito, a Mexican restaurant, and Shotgun Willie's, a strip club in nearby Glendale. At Shotgun Willie's they also withdrew $400 from Jarrett's account, although court documents do not make clear whether either of the men knew Jarrett's PIN number. The two men stayed at Shotgun Willie's until closing time, and reported Jarrett's death to the police at around 04:00 in the morning. Denver Police Department spokesman Sonny Jackson called the incident a "bizarre and unfortunate crime". He added: "This isn't anything you want to have happen to a loved one. You want them treated with respect in death." The two men have been released from custody on bail, and are due in court in late September and early October.

t seven feet tall (2.13m) and 23 stone (146kg), Valuev was the tallest and the heaviest boxing champion in history. The man called the "Beast from the East" is in Siberia to track down another beast, the yeti. There are said to have been several sightings in the mountains of Kemerovo Region in recent years. In 2009, local hunters witnessed what they described as "hairy humanoid creatures" near the Azass Cave in Mount Shoriya. The creatures were said to be about six feet tall. Veritable midgets compared to Mr Valuev. But big enough, and mysterious enough, to be dubbed the "Siberian Snowman". "And I believe that miracles only happen at Christmas time. I doubt whether the yeti is going to run into the road and greet our truck with open arms. But I'll let you know if I see anything." A spokesman for the

Kemerovo regional administration said that the boxer was keen to "talk to the yeti about life". That may prove difficult.

erlin police have appealed for information to help them establish the identity of a teenager who appeared in the city saying that he had been living in the woods for five years. The teenager is about 17, and speaks English and a little German. He told the police that he and his father went to live in the woods after his mother died. He said he left the woods in August when his father died, and walked for two weeks before reaching Berlin. He said he couldn't remember where his family came from, but that his name was Ray.

After visiting La Resinera the route back to Málaga province for Cómpeta’s fledgling guides led alongside the beautiful Embalse de los Bermejales (the reservoir you can see looking north from the Málaga hills), north and west to reach

Alhama de Granada

T

his beautiful town is about 20 km from Ventas de Zafarraya, the U shaped pass through the Sierras into Granada; easy to find, just follow the A402. We rolled in from the other direction and had 2 hours to look around. It’s beautiful. It sites on the edge of a breathtaking gorge through which the Rio Alhama flows and beside which are the hot springs, which gave the town its name are found. The Romans, always keen on a hot bath, built here first. The Muslims loved the springs and town too: Al Hammam is Arabic for hot springs, hence the town’s name. Apparently “Ay de mi Alhama”, a Spanish expression of regret, comes from here – Abu Al Hasen, the Muslim leader, cried this when he lost the town. The Tourist Office on Paseo Montes Jovellar gave

us a good tourist map with sites of interest marked and described. I have since found the same map on the internet, with all the limitations of internet translation…“He was added to the church for a new stretch your feet covering in a starry dome”,,. But the tourist office map was enough. The victorious Catholics rebuilt much of this ancient town: there’s a lot of Spanish gothic, with buildings dating from the 16th Century on. Many are lovely: I liked Plaza de los Presos (prisoners’ square), built on the site of the Muslim souk. On one side is the Iglesia de Santa Maria de la Encarnación built on the site of the mosque; a lovely archway links it to a church museum. Across the square is the posito or granary; this building is thought to have been a synagogue for a resident Jewish community, built in the 13th Century. After the re-conquest the grain stored

here was kept for locals to buy cheaply in times of trouble. Beyond that there is Hospital de la Reina. This was the first hospital the Catholic monarchs built in Granada province and they got started early, building on top of a Muslim structure from 1485. Alhama was wrenched from the Muslim population in a battle in 1482, so in 1485 it was still close to the frontline: somewhere to tend casualties would, I imagine, have been urgently needed. Through the archway beside the church I was thrilled to see a “casa de la inquisición”. It turned out to be just a house with a gothic frontage and the name is mythic. You might almost say I expected the Spanish Inquisition, but they were never there (sorry!). Head towards the other church, Iglesia del Carmen, and you find yourself looking up towards the castle and down (beyond the wall) into the gorge. Beside the water, far below you, there is a cluster of abandoned water-mills. Behind them the cliff-sides rise on either hand, showing the channel the Rio Alhama has cut down the centuries. The poplar groves and lush green

growth looked cool from up in the hot town. The only thing that stopped me going to splash my hot feet with cold river water was the thought of the walk back up! There are lovely walks all around this area and the GR-7, the immense route you see marked with white and red ringed posts on our side of the mountains, runs through here. Walking the gorge is one reason I must revisit this town. The other? The hot springs. They are a little out of town near the Roman bridge and are said to contain some of the finest surviving examples of Almohad and Nazarid architecture. They are exceptionally beautiful. In winter steam rises gently from the surface of the waters reflecting the arches and patterns built around them. Maybe I’ll get back to visit them this winter. I can’t believe I went to Alhama de Granada without visiting the springs. Ay de mi Alhama! Rose Jones

Rare & Edible!

Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh

W

e all love to wander into the garden for a handful of herbs, a few oranges to squeeze into juice or some juicy strawberries to perk up our cereals but we are so lucky, here in Spain, to have a huge range of more unusual fruits and leaves that we can grow too. At the garden centre, we’ve just received some rarer plants, so let me share them with you. Capparis spinosa, caper plant, Sp. alcaparra. Since I first wrote about the caper plant back in 2008 we’ve had a constant stream of people asking for this beautiful plant so I’m delighted to tell you that we now have plants in stock – at last! They are notoriously difficult to propagate although you will see them growing along roadsides in rubble or hanging over rock faces and they’re great for preventing soil erosion. Their fragile delicacy is deceptive as they are some of the toughest and most drought resistant plants known to survive as low as -10 C as long as normal conditions are intensely hot and dry. Of course, they supply us with capers, traditionally used with smoked salmon, in tartare sauce and served as a tapa in Spanish bars. It was once a very traditional crop in Spain. The plants form low arching shrubs, to 0.5 m tall, with long arching canes that can spread 5 m. The glaucous green leaves are studded in summer with large creamy-white flowers with long lilac stamens. Capers are unopened flower buds, the smaller size said to have the best flavour and, therefore, value. But the plants give three distinct crops: the young shoots, harvested in April, are a great delicacy said to taste like asparagus; the buds are collected during June and July for capers and August and September are the months for the fruits, also edible but considered inferior to the buds. Mature plants, at 4 to 5 years old, will produce approx. 5 kg of capers yearly. Each plant will live around 30 years. Pruning is carried out during November and December, shortening the long growths back to two leaf buds for the flowers are borne on new young shoots.

Stevia rebaudiana, sweet herb or sweet leaf, Sp. Stevia or hierba dulce. In Paraguay, the home of stevia, it has been known since time immemorial that the leaf of ka’a he’e is a natural sweetener with medicinal properties. In 1966 a study showed that the plant could be used as an anti-diabetic and, since then, it has acquired great commercial importance in Brazil, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and, of course, Paraguay. The sweetness of the plant is due to steviosido which is found in the greatest concentration in the leaves and to a lesser extent in the stems and flowers. 2000 kgs of dried leaves can be harvested from a hectare of the plants, providing 200 kgs. of steviosido. Naturally plants grow in fairly acid soil on the edges of marshes or streams. It does not like to dry out, but nor should it be in standing water. It has been found to be tolerant of a wide range of soils, except saline conditions. It is hardy to around 0C and long summer days increase its flavour and yield. Young plants should be pinched regularly to encourage them to bush and grow strongly. Plant 25cm apart. Cuttings root easily under long-day conditions. The sweetness is greatest just before flowering, which is triggered by shortening days. Fresh leaves can be gathered to eat or use in teas. For a main harvest, cut the entire plant 10cm – 15cm above ground, leaving the roots untouched for this is a perennial plant. Hang the crop in bundles upside down in a light airy place, but out of the sun. The dried leaves can be ground down into green stevia powder and used in place of sugar. A much healthier alternative! Lycium barbarum, goji berry, Sp. bayas de goji. Goji berries have been heralded as the new ‘wonder’ fruit over the last few years and, certainly the berries are packed with vitamins and antioxidants but the plants have been known in Europe since the 1600’s and are, in fact, now naturalised in many areas. They used to be known as the Chinese wolfberry, Chinese boxthorn or matrimony vine. The name goji is fairly new and is from the Chinese gou qi zi. They are extremely easy; tolerant between -15C and +40C, self-fertile, wind, saline and drought tolerant. They do not like heavy clay soils. Plant in a sunny or partially shaded site – they’re a useful soil stabilising plant too. They can also be grown in large pots, attaining some 1m x 1m. Each plant will produce around 1kg of fruits yearly. Small purple/white trumpet flowers are followed by small orange/red fruits. Shake the fruits from the plant and eat them fresh or dried – they have a mild sweet liquorice flavour - and they can be infused into a tasty tea. Young shoots can

To advertise call 637 028 873

also be cooked lightly and have a cress-like flavour. The leaves are more important in Asia than the berries. Prune lightly in early spring as the plant starts into growth. Ipomoea batata margarita and tricolor, sweet potato vine, Sp. batata, boniato. The beautiful lush foliage of the sweet potato vine is wonderful creeping between more permanent plantings providing groundcover over large areas or twining through a trellis. It’s soft, lush, vigorous and exotic looking! We have two varieties in stock – margarita which is a cooling lime green and tricolor, a wonderful combination of soft blue/green/grey and cream leaves splashed with pink. A tropical plant, their top foliage dies down here during the winter to emerge fresh and strong in springtime. The flowers, cup-shaped, are lilac/pink, the foliage is stunning and they have another plus – large tubers that are edible, or sweet potatoes, with their wonderful sweet/salty flavour. Try them roasted with your Sunday roast, amazing! The plants love heat and romp away at an amazing rate, covering 4m or 5m quickly. If you want a good crop, plant them 50cm apart in light shade and water regularly. A square metre will produce something like 10 kg of sweet potatoes which can be harvested as the leaves start to dry up (some three months after planting). They can be stored like normal potatoes. Save some tubers to start up your plants the following year.

We also have cymbopogon citratus, lemon grass, famous in Thai cooking and echinacea purpurea, purple coneflower, to fight the common cold - but more of those another time! Please remember the garden centre changes back to winter hours in October, 10 – 4, closed Sundays and Mondays. Lorraine Cavanagh has lived in Spain for 25 years; a mother, grandmother and hispanófila, her passions are plants, the environment, food and drink, and travelling within Spain. A landscape gardener and writer, she’s always happy to give advice. Call and see her at Viveros Florena, 2km from Cómpeta down the Sayalonga Road, or 15km up from the coastal motorway – have a free coffee and cake in their tea-rooms. An excellent Belgian Flamenco guitarist, Pedro Sauviller will be performing and may be joined from time to time by a Flamenco singer.

The night will start with Grupo de Zambombas de Canillas de Albaida, a group of local ladies singing their beautiful haunting melodies. This is usually done at Christmas as they stroll through the streets banging tambourines.

The night will be rounded off with an hour of dance music from around the World by Acoustic Roots who will be joined by Geoff Murrell and other performers on stage.

The 3 piece multi-instrumental harmony group, Acoustic Roots, will be playing music from the UK, USA, Ireland and Spain and will be joined from time to time by Geoff Murrell on vocals. African Roots, an exciting African (and a Dutch couple) group of percussionists will entertain you with their pulsing rhythms. One Voice, a lovely 4 part harmony group, led by Tom Robinson, will give their harmonious renditions of such classics as Guantanamera and Volare amongst others, accompanied by Tom on keyboards. A young up and coming and very popular local Spanish group, Alcompas will be entertaining you with their own brand of music and they may be able to tempt a couple of their friends to dance some flamenco too.

The Grapevine 42

There will be Irish dancing (ceilidh) with Grainnie McCoy and everyone will be invited (with instructions) to dance the “Bridge of Athlone” while Acoustic Roots play. This is great fun!

The Grand Finale at around midnight will be the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” featuring One Voice, Geoff Murrell on lead vocals, Acoustic Roots, African Roots, Alcompas and Pedro Sauviller. It is hoped that there will be interaction between performers throughout the night with players from one band joining others for one or two songs. This will be a unique night of music and anything could happen, not to be missed. Admission is free in the square. There will be a bar and you can book a table at Restaurante La Plaza if you wish to eat. For more information contact Mitch France on 616 891473 or email him on mitchbanjo@hotmail.com.

Comares S

o, you step off the plane, sigh with relief at the first sight of the sun in weeks, hit the beach and the pool for a few days and think 'What now?’ You know that Spain has more to offer than sunny beaches, a warm sea and beach front restaurants, very pleasant though they are, and maybe a trip inland to a more historic Spain would be of interest. A thirty minute drive from Velez-Malaga would take you to one of the most picturesque and historic villages in the Axarquia, Comares. Any mountain top with a water supply and an easily defensible position was always going to be seen as valuable by the different groups which have ruled Spain and this has been true for Comares. Over the centuries, various empires have held this part of Spain. The Roman, Islamic and Spanish empires have all, in their turn, controlled this important walled village. As you drive up towards the village from the coast, the white- walled houses on the peak of the mountain come in and out of view. You realise that at 735 metres above sea-level there are going to be tremendous views towards the coast, the surrounding 'campo' and the mountains. The village was built long before the motor car so the car parks are located just below the old entrance to the town itself. An addition to the tourist experience this year is the availability of donkeys and horses to hire for trips around the town and the campo from 'Burro Taxis'. Six euros will buy a trip around the village beginning at the

The Grapevine 44

car park nearest the entrance to the village. Slightly longer routes outside the village can also be experienced. These animals must be among the best looked after in Spain with their customised shade and copious supplies of water. Later in the year, more adventurous trips are planned, starting with a local breakfast and going further into the campo. This will have to wait until the weather is more suitable. From the car park, you pass the walls which defended the village and arrive in the Plaza. Most tourists can't resist going to the Balcon, a shaded space which projects from the hill top and provides spectacular views over the countryside; Mount Maroma to the left, the coast and sea to the front and the Mountains of Malaga to the right. The bar situated in the Plaza is an obvious attraction for those who are already thirsty, with its umbrellas shielding the customers from the sun. Slightly less obviously, is the hotel, 'Molino des Abuelos', with its entrance on the Plaza, an old mill, which has been transformed by the two Dutchmen who run it into a sophisticated centre of food and entertainment. It has the advantage of a terrace where every Saturday in August, and monthly thereafter, a show is presented to the diners on a Saturday night. Recently, these shows have included a 'Flamenco Night','1001 Nights', 'Bollywood Night' and 'Mama Mia'. Friday night is a Salsa night, when those who have attended the Salsa class run on a Monday turn up to demonstrate what they have learned,

or not, as the case may be. Others turn up just because they enjoy the music and the ambience. On a Tuesday, a barbecue is run where for fifteen euros per head, the customers have the chance to enjoy the terrace view as well as the food. It also operates as a hotel as well as a restaurant and it is possible to stay as guests.

bend on the way down with a row of apartments on the left, there is a sign for the Mirador restaurant. Most English speakers refer to this as the Camping bar and even some Spanish speakers now refer to it as 'El Camping'. Currently it offers a 'Menu del Dia' for seven euros at lunchtime.

From the Plaza, if you walk away from the Balcon towards the arch at the back, you will see ceramic footsteps on the street suggesting a route around the village. If you follow the footsteps to the left up the Calle Real, it takes you to the Calle Perdon. The ceramic illustrates the conversion of a number of muslim families after the conquest of Spain by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492. The route takes you to the top of the village, passed the church (which was originally a mosque. This is also marked by one of the ceramics. The route returns via the street of the Arab arches to a new arch, built in the Moorish style, with a spectacular vista of the campo to the rear of the village and from which the centuries old road went from the village to the fountain which provided water. Finally, the route climbs to the castle with one of the original watchtowers, dating back to the Romans, is still in place. From this elevation, it is very easy to give way to delusions of grandeur, imagining what it would be like to have dominated the surrounding area from this position.

Comares also have a number of festivals, the largest of which usually takes place towards the end of August.

The route goes back to the Plaza via two Spanish bars, Tres Balcones and Bar Tropicana. Many English tourists find their way to a restaurant just outside the village. As you approach the third

If you drive up from the coast, you might see someone walking to or from his piece of land in the campo. Often, this person will look very familiar in that he will have a straw hat, a short sleeved check shirt, blue trousers, sandals, skin that looks as if has been longer in the sun than most health professionals would now recommend and a wooden handled tool such as a hoe. It is not hard to imagine that this image would be instantly recognised by anyone from the past one thousand years or more. The clothes might have changed but the work of making the land productive is constant. The land has been weeded, irrigated, harvested and fought over for centuries and Comares has been the key to controlling the land around. Come and discover Comares.

First Foreigners’ Meeting Canillas de Albaida

C

anillas de Albaida, with a population of around 850, has about 150 foreign residents, in addition to people with holiday homes. The foreigners (Dutch, Danish, Slovakians and Germans as well as British), were courted by all parties at the local elections. So it was refreshing, at the end of the summer to see the first post-election Foreigners’ Meeting, as promised in the campaign, actually taking place. Jorge Martín Perez, the new mayor, was flanked by Eva-Maria Sigvardt acting as translator and Gustavo Romero, Counsellor for Tourism. People were evidently keen to hear what they had to say: the Salon de Actos filled up and even the extra chairs put out weren’t enough, which shows a positive interest in an apathetic era. The Town Hall gave an outline of their immediate concerns, mainly reflecting the counsel’s inherited debt of 1.2 million and measures taken or planned to rectify this. They also confirmed their intention to provide for better communication with the foreign community, via the collection of email addresses and a fortnightly

clinic in the town hall with Eva available for consultation from 10 ‘til 2 for any queries or concerns. There’s also a “buzon de sugerencias” for people to post suggestions and ideas in writing, just outside the town hall. Issues raised and taken up in the questions related to faults in water-supply, local management of animals (barking semiabandoned dogs, collection of stray dogs and cleaning of the streets), changes in charges for the water supply and a local sneak-thief. Translating got rather lost in the middle! However, people generally approved the meeting as step forward and most look forward to the agenda for the next meeting, due to take place before Christmas. Some Ideas On How to Prepare for the Coming Winter Season!

TimeOut Spas Nerja

W

hat better way to prepare for those cold winter nights than to get yourself a nice Hot Tub! Just knowing that the tub is there, hot and cozy, whenever you want it makes the cold easier to bear. Surprisingly cheap to operate the beauty of a hot tub is that it is always ready to use. Just open the lid and climb in! Once in the tub the hot water and therapeutic jets will massage away your aches and pains in minutes leaving you feeling fresh and relaxed. A nice soak an hour or so before you go to bed and you will sleep like a baby! TimeOut Spas can offer you all types of spas – from 2 person spas to Theater spas for ten people including wide screen TV and stereo surround sound. We also offer SwimSpas which are half pool and half spa so not only can you have a good soak but you can also swim to your hearts content. Inside each SwimSpa are special, high power, swim jets that you swim against while staying in the same place so you can swim for as long as you want. With a built-in heating system you can keep the water at just the right temperature so if the family come for Christmas the grandchildren can actually get in the pool instead of just looking at it! Also, as a SwimSpa doesn't require a building permit those of you who cannot get a permit to build a pool can still have a pool and as it requires about a tenth of the water a pool does there is no problem filling it up. So if you're thinking about a pool or a spa come and see us at Timeout Spas in Nerja – you'll be surprised…

inter is always a busy time at the English shop so sourcing the best food for the customer starts in September. You can now stock up on all your favourite soups or even make your own as we stock some great winter vegetables such as suede, parsnips, lentils, leeks then you could add stock cubes and a few sweet potatoes for that heart warming thick soup and a huge chunk of crusty bread. We love winter time at the shop as we stock new lines so why not try some different stews or packet mixes for coq-au –vin, beef bourguignon or a liver and bacon casserole. The smell of Clementine's and cinnamon reminds us that Christmas is on the way ginger wine, whole turkeys, turkey crowns, New Zealand lamb ,pork with crackling, Duck, pheasants ,chipolatas, stuffing mix we have it all for a great dinner. Also don't forget the chocolate Quality Street, Heroes and Roses. What about some winter flowers holly and ivy and the unmistakable smell of pine. Winter means to me, going home to cuddle up on the sofa with a huge log fire, a good book while sipping mulled wine and eating lots of mince pies and afterwards, for me anyway, obviously weight watchers!

E.G.O Hair and Beauty Cómpeta Winter skincare Despite the hot, sunny days of September, it's time to start thinking about winter skin care! So here are a few tips from Lujos to help you deal with the nasties of winter. All recommended products can be purchased at E.G.O Hair & Beauty in Competa. Call Mel or Andy on 616022734. Switch to a cream Creams are more moisturising than lotions, as the concentration of rich ingredients is greater. Creams also provide a protective barrier against heating systems and cold wind. If you are already using creams, consider switching to a richer cream for winter. Products Recommended: Absolutely Fab or 24 Seven face cream, Lujos Nourish range for body. Protect Your Lips Start moisturising early to prevent chapped lips. Look for lip balms that contain rich oils and butters. Good ingredients: cocoa butter, avocado oil, and mango butter. These moisturising lipids can work wonders for your lips. Products Recommended: MangoCoco lip balm Take care of those hands Hands damaged by sun and chlorine this summer need extra care to stay soft and moist all winter long. As the skin on hands tends to be thinner than elsewhere, and is often exposed to more drying agents, it needs special care. Products Recommended: Lovely Hands hand cream, Nightime Hand Balm. Hint: apply the balm just before bed, then pull on thin cotton gloves, for a super moisture treatment. Use gentle soaps Don't be afraid to use soap on your body and face, but use the right ones. DON'T buy harsh supermarket soaps, full of dyes and fragrances which strip your skin's essential oils, leaving your skin feeling tight and dry. Instead, use natural, handmade soap, which is rich in natural glycerin and moisturising oils. Products Recommended: any Lujos soap Continue with sun protection Despite the cooler weather, you still need to protect your skin from UV rays, so continue using SPF rated products when outdoors.

Right now I'm working on spread-sheet 3 which will contain all our customer orders.

We have to place our first Christmas food order in June, so whilst you are just getting started on your summer tan, we're ordering mince pies in bulk. Then, just as the first pallets of Christmas goodies arrive, we have to fight our way through the piles of chocolates and cranberries to retrieve the e-mail informing us “1 week left to order Easter Eggs”. Early planning does pay off. I really enjoy choosing gifts for friends and family throughout the year rather than cramming it into a couple of stressful days. Likewise with the shop, the orders placed during the summer leave the Autumn free to source all the extra special harder to find bits that really make Christmas special. I started sourcing our Christmas giftware even earlier at Europe's largest trade exhibition, in February. This year you will be able to view and reserve some of our giftware on line by section i.e. his, hers, under 5€, easy to post etc. We will be having a beat the rush giftware sale at the end of November and our Christmas groceries will be available for pre-order from November 1st and we guarantee availability of everything ordered before December 1st. So there is no excuse - plan ahead, and leave December totally free to eat drink & be merry.

Bull Dogs

T

hrough work we vets meet loads of different dogs and cats every day. I think they are all lovely although some are prettier than others.I often wonder why breeders will go so far as they do in order to obtain animals with the “right look. Take for example the English bulldog. They have a wonderful temperament, but most of them are born with a series of faults that often only can be corrected via surgery. First of all, during the efforts of making them as flat nosed as possible, breeders have forgotten to take into account the dogs anatomy. The jaws have been made shorter, but their soft palate has conserved its length. It is therefore too long, and every time the dog takes a breath the palate gets sucked into its throat. The palate's mucosa gets irritated by the constant friction, gets inflamed and the condition gets worse. Furthermore, their nostrils are too small, so the dog is forced to breath with its mouth open all the time. In the worst case, the constant struggle for breath provokes a collapse of the trachea. In order to help the dog, we need to operate, cut a piece of the palate and open up the nostrils, sometimes we have to operate on the trachea as well. I am quite surprised by how few dog owners are aware of how hard their dog is struggling, and not many think the dog needs operating on at all. Recently I was having a cup of coffee next to the clinic, and a lady sat down at the neighbouring table with her French bulldog. It was quite early in the morning and not warm at all yet, but the dog was panting violently and standing with the

58

The Grapevine

elbows turned out ways to try and open the chest up more. It didn't lie down at all, but just stood there trying to get some oxygen into the lungs. The owner was happily reading her newspaper and drinking coffee, unaware that her best friend was choking to death under the table. Apart from the breathing problems, English bulldogs often get eye problems as well. They are often born with an extra line of eyelashes on the inside of the eyelid, so they scratch the cornea every time the dog blinks, a bit like having a grain of sand in the eye. Often the eyelids themselves are deformed, so they either tilt inwards (entropion) or outwards (ectopion), both conditions can be found on the same dog. The constant irritation of the eye can provokethe tear gland whihch pops out from under the eye lid, which is quite spectacular (cherry eye). This all needs to be surgically corrected or the dog will go blind. There is even more to know when you buy a Bulldog, they are also prone to get joint diseases due to their conformation, and skin diseases because it is difficult to keep all the wrinkles clean and dry. He might then need plastic surgery. I just think people have the right to know what they sign up for when they buy a dog of a specific breed, and when they do, they should be responsible and let it have the operations that are necessary to obtain a reasonable quality of life. A lot of breeders should also be more responsible for their actions and try to breed healthy dogs. Gunila - Naturvets

Dowsing M

any of you will have heard of somebody who has the ability to find water or other things, by using a forked stick, dowsing rods or a pendulum and have wondered how it was done. Dowsing is something that anyone can learn. It’s like any other skill, it increases and becomes easier the more you practice. Interestingly, statistics show dowsers have a higher success rate in finding water or oil etc. than using geophysical surveys, and that in many companies the geophysical team is only used after the dowsers have located a site. To have an understanding of what is taking place when you are dowsing, goes a long way in helping develop these skills in yourself. It’s not really about the equipment you use (expensive, cheap, or home made dowsing rods pendulums or sticks, will all work in the same way), but more about communication. The first step in learning to dowse, is to really learn to communicate with your own body, or more specifically, with the cells of your body, which have energy and consciousness and can be communicated with. It’s less about the words and more about the feeling and intention behind them that counts. The development of this skill can be likened to a third, or alternative language, in the same way that Art or Music is. It helps to start with something you are familiar with, have an affinity to, or passion for. for example, I know a Spanish farmer who realised from about the age of 7, that he could sense water when it was nearby. Over the years he has developed this affinity to allow him to find underground water and can now, not only find hidden water courses but trace their direction, and say how far below the surface it is and approximate how much is there with great accuracy. The point is that he developed this affinity with a lot of practice, he now uses a pair of heavy metal pendulums and is a very successful water diviner. The area that I am practised in, is Dowsing of the Earth, and the tools I use are, myself and a pair of ‘L’ shaped metal dowsing rods (which my husband makes for me from old wire coathangars) I like to have a few pairs around, as I am forever leaving them behind and losing them! I start by doing a short meditation (only a minute or two) I use the Reiki Gassho meditiation, but any meditation

process you are familiar with will be fine. Then I protect myself spiritually, for this I have learned to raise the vibration of my body while I work. Once you are able to connect with the cells of your body, you will find this quite easy and natural, you can also use any protection technique you already have or prefer. I then walk to the part of the Garden or Ground where I wish to start. I hold the dowsing rods, in a relaxed grip, parallel to the ground with my arms at right angles. I make a connection between myself and the earth where I am standing and when I feel this connection (which only takes a few seconds) I start asking questions. Such as, is there any negative energy here? As I walk across the garden the rods will cross over each other if there is, go the opposite way and splay apart if the energy is good, or stay as they were if neutral. There are many types of energies running through the earth, good and bad, caused by disturbances in the earth’s crust, leylines, lines of geopathic stress and places where there has been a lot of fear or tragedies (through battles, wars, accidents or many other things). You can ask about all of these things while you are dowsing and can build a picture and map out whole houses and gardens very accurately in this way and find out exactly what kind of energy you are living in. Also you will develop more subtle impressions as your intuition and experience develops. This in turn will give you more confidence. This is not a difficult skill to learn and as you become more practised, you will find it becomes very natural and easy. There are many ways you can change negative energy to positive, such as Earth Acupuncture, Reiki or some of the other Earth Healing techniques I have developed in Kinetic Healing. As the vibration in and around your home increases (good energy vibrates at a higher level) it will give you a much healthier and happier place to live. In the garden I have found that everything grows bigger and healthier, fruit trees give more fruit, our cabbages are twice the size of our neighbours, and the eggs from our chickens are amazing. Well, thats about it, I have developed these skills from my connection with the earth, and the relationship I have developed with he., Wishing you all happy dowsing. Julie Narewski.

Orange Grove Services I

met Mark from Orange Grove services this month as he wanted to explain some of his offers for the coming month. Mark is keen to lend support to charitable and ex-military organisations in the area. If any of these charity groups need some work doing then he will offer a 10 % discount for his company's services. Further more, if as result of this support he gains further work from the members themselves he will donate 10% of his earnings back to that charity. … What a great idea.

Mark works along side another Mark and has done for a number of years now providing a one stop solution for those seeking building work. They are specialists in Carpentry, Plumbing and Electrical services however they have vast experience in all other aspects of the building trade in Spain... Mark explained he often gets phone calls from people ringing for advice. Perhaps they are looking at a property and want some idea of what needs to be done to it and the costs involved before they actually buy the house. Mark is happy to provide this advice for free, obviously with the hope that maybe they will use him later on, but this is by no means obligatory! He also gets calls from people who want to know if he can recommend a good gardener or cleaner. Mark explained after all these years in Spain he has now built up a good list of contacts and would be happy to pass on details of those companies or individuals he recommends. He admits this year hasn't been the easiest of years work wise but the flow of work has been steady and they have been fortunate enough to have worked throughout the summer where for many work has dried up. He did add the advert in The Grapevine Magazine had helped with the increased work situation and would recommend it….. Thanks Mark! Finally, Mark would like to offer his carpentry services for free for one day to a family or individual that would really benefit from it. As such, he is running a competition where you can email him or email him on behalf of someone in no more than 350 words why that person should benefit from a days work from Mark at Orange Grove services. Please email him at lastgamesoon@hotmail.com and he will chose the worthy winner and announce it in The Grapevine Magazine.

A walk up the Rio Chillar

I

n August of this year – yes we waited for the hottest month of the year – a group of us walked up the river Chillar in Nerja. Now I am aware I am not the first person to write about this walk, but thought I would share the experience of yet another great thing to do for free in this lovely area we live in – the Axarquia. Sadly, my directions of how to get to the start of the walk are a bit vague; I was driving and my wife said we needed to go to where the Sunday car boot sale is held in Nerja. Totally ignoring the 'No Entry' sign we carried on to find a market in full swing. It was Tuesday and this, is as we now know, is where the street market is held. We did a swift u-turn and headed down some side street guided by my wife. Now, my wife had done this walk the previous year with a group of people and after regaling me with tales of strong currents, wading thigh-high through water and a flip-flop cruelly washed away by the sheer force of the water I was keen to see what all the fuss was about. Anyway, after driving for a few minutes we saw a track lined by bushes and my wife said she was “fairly sure” this was the way to go. Annoyingly she was right (she's always right) and soon we were driving alongside a trickle of water so inconsequential that describing it as a stream would be like calling the Cómpeta swimming pool Olympic sized. We drove on for about ten minutes and came upon a clearing where other cars were parked, got out of the car and started checking we had all of the essentials. Water (lots) - check. Suntan lotion - check. Pork pies and sausage rolls for lunch - check. So we were all set so took our first steps into the river, now more than a trickle but still not very exciting. The first few steps are a bit uncomfortable as the cold water infiltrates your trainers and then you begin to squelch with every step. After last year's floating flipflip we knew that trainers or walking boot were the best choice of footwear and soon after a while you forget the squelching and begin to concentrate on where to put your feet. In places the river is deeper than in others and the size of the stones differ, so looking where you step is a must. The river changes and begins to deepen and it was not long until we came to the first dammed area which had created a natural pool of clear, turquoise water. Despite leaving early to miss the heat of the day the pool had already been occupied by a large group of people happily frolicking in the water. And as we carried on the walk it was great to see friends and families of all ages playing and enjoying the walk. Three of our group,

my nephews Josh and Jack (10 and 12 respectively) and my son, 22 had found sticks and were playing at being ninjas in the water. I would have joined in too if it was not for the burden of the pork pies safely stored in my man bag. The walk becomes more difficult as you go on and it is hard not to imagine yourself as an intrepid explorer discovering a new unseen area. This illusion was shattered when we rounded a bend and saw a 30 stone man lying on his back in a pool of water with his grandson bouncing on his belly. That said the recent incident of Mary-Anne Goossens, the Dutch tourist who got lost for 18 days on this very walk was always at the back of my mind. It is hard to see how she managed to get lost. I can only presume she deviated from the river and climbed away from where other walkers would have been. One of the most interesting parts of the walk is where the river goes through a canyon only a metre or so wide. Here the water is at its fastest but the canyon walls come in very handy to steady oneself. In fact this part of the walk on the way back is probably the hardest part of the walk as it is hard to see where to put your feet into the fast flowing water as it runs over fairly large rocks.

After 2 hours we came to the part we had decided would be our goal; a rocky area with a few large pools and waterfalls cascading rapidly. Within 10 metres of this point we had our first and only casualty of the day; ironically my son slipping on some dry rocks. With his pride hurt more than his badly grazed arm and cut thumb he ended up with some nice scarring to show his friends at university. We spent some time at the waterfalls eating our well-deserved lunch before starting our walk back. Everybody had had a good time and during the walk we had seen a few lizards and dragon flies not to mention the beautiful scenery along the river itself. There are many factors that make this a great day out; you can walk as far or as little as you like, the shady canyon means it does not get too hot, you do not have to drive far to get there and best of all it is free!

Local Police have reported that

86

although they have not yet concluded the investigation into the accident, the do not believe it was caused by a technical error. At the scene of the accident the didn’t find oil, soil or anything else that could have caused the train to overturn, and believe that it may have been travelling too fast, as confirmed by witnesses, causing it to hit the edge of a roundabout. Meanwhile, the train remains out of service. The five elderly passengers, three women and two men, were taken to the Axarquia Regional Hospital but were released shortly afterwards with slight

injuries, such as cuts and bruises. They have said that they had noticed the train was going too fast and was leaning to one side on bends. They were visiting Torre del Mar from Almaraz in Caceres, with a group of 104 people from an association for the elderly. There were another four people on the train at the time but they were in another wagon. A GAY VILLAGE A Gay association is said to be ‘outraged’ at the proposal of Moclinejo becoming an exclusively ‘gay village’.

If this proposal, put forth by the Expogays Fair organizer, is approved, the village could be painted pink and 600 ‘gay’ style homes built, doubling the number of properties. “It is discriminatory and segregates people for purely political and economic reasons,” said Salvador Rubio, president of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Collective, COLEGA. “This will not promote equal opportunity, it will create ghettos,” he said. “We fight for the freedom of individuals so that they can freely decide where they want to live.” Meanwhile, Frigiliana Town Hall’s concept would seem to be more in line with this view of ‘free choice’. Instead of becoming a ‘gay village’ business association Aecpaf proposes attracting gay tourism by specializing in gay weddings. Hotel rooms would be specially adapted to gay tastes and certain discounts offered to gay couples in the old town. This week the town’s Cultural Centre will be hosting its fourth gay wedding. These proposals will be presented at the Expogays Fair in Torremolinos between October 14 and 16. BIKE HIRE SERVICE Velez-Malaga Town Hall plans to put the management of the bike-hire service out for public tender. The local council has said it wants locals and visitors to be able to enjoy the service again as soon as possible.

Local News orders against them. According to SOHA, the draft for the decree does not refer to this type of situation, and they believe that it offers no solutions for people whose homes are to be demolished despite them having built or purchased them in good faith. SAVE OUR HOMES AXARQUIA Save our homes axarquia (SOHA) has announced that it doesn’t plan to sit around and wait for the Junta to decide on the future of their homes, according to reports in Spanish media. The group represents some 400 foreign residents who want their homes to be legalized and protected, and avoid demolition. For four years they have been demanding a solution to the problem which affects some 12,760 houses in the Axarquia area, a figure closer to 22,000 according to environmentalists. Instead, they have decided to present allegations against the draft for a decree by which the Junta de Andalucia plans to legalize houses which were built on non-urban land in Andalucia, as well as offer solutions to improve it. Amongst the suggestions made to the Secretary General for Territorial Planning and Urban Development of the Council of Public Works, they are asking for a legal solution for houses built under licenses which were wrongly granted by local town halls and which have been later declared illegal by the Junta and have demolition

STOLEN AVACODOS IN VELEZ MALAGA A 2,000-Kilo haul of unripe avocados worth €3,000 disappeared overnight from a plantation. Their unreadiness should help track down the thieves as it is too early for the Spanish crop and the only avocados currently available are from Chile or Israel. It was not the first time that Fabrice’s trees were stripped by thieves and after losing 60,000 kilos in 2009 he himself kept watch over his Valle Niza plantation as his crop ripened the following year. Despite his vigilance, however, thieves still made off with 30,000 kilos. It would have required at least six men working through the night to pick and load the stolen avocados, Fabrice said. The only consolation for his financial loss was knowing that although the fruit looked a good size, the avocados were still
