Editors Note... Thanks to those of you who sent in photographs to us, some of which we have put on our Grapevine facebook page. We chose an especially good one for this months front cover. This photo was taken by Karen Ann Jones who lives in North Wales. She took the picture in April on holiday whilst visiting her parents in Competa. Photography has become a passionate hobby of Karens’s after her husband gave her a DSLR camera for a present last Christmas. Please do keep sending in the photographs, maybe next months front cover could be your photo!

NEWS IN SPAIN News from the Axarquia

T

he Spanish public debt has reached another record at 75.9% of G.D.P. debt, and that is the highest level in a century. The total debt has increased 14% in the second quarter and now stands at 804 billion 388 million €. The debt is increasing faster in the central administration rather than the regions. The numbers have been released for the second quarter by the Bank of Spain, and show that central administration debt rose by 4.4% to 617.5 billion €, which represents 58.3% of the GDP. Debts in the regions have increased less, up 2.8% to reach 150.578 billion €. Meanwhile Andalucía is prepared to ask for a rescue from the Autonomous Liquidity Fund (FLA) of at least 2.4 billion. The Hacienda Ministry has not made it clear if will give an advance of 1 billion € to the region, and the Junta wants to know the conditions before formalising its request.

A

female employee of Iberia in Barajas airport in Madrid died in a hit and run. She was hit by car with at least two hooded people inside and then the hooded men made off with her car, a Porsche Cayenne. It's thought they ran down the woman just to get her car.

32 8 The Grapevine

Sources at the airport indicated that the woman was in the employees car park when she was hit by a SEAT Toledo. A spokesperson from the Madrid police indicated the woman was by herself at the time. Ambulance workers from Samur found the woman already with a cardiopulmonary arrest, and despite working on her for 30 minutes there was nothing they could do to save her.

fter talks with the Government the three largest petrol companies in Spain, Repsol, Cepsa and B.P. have accepted that they control their margins to contain the price increases. It comes after the companies have been accused by the National Competition Commission (CNC) of putting up prices straight away, but when there is a fall in the price the companies take their time before the reduction can be seen on the forecourt. Antonio Brufau, Chairman of Repsol commented after the meeting, 'What we can do, we will do'. José Manuel Soria, Minister for Industry, has warned the petrol companies and the distributors that measures will be taken if they do not cooperate.

T

he owners of the illegally built houses in Málaga province which have been affected by fire, will receive compensation. Central Government has guaranteed the money provided the owner can prove his of her ownership with an IBI receipt, the tax on goods and property. However, the Government Sub Delegate, Jorge Hernández Mollar, confirmed that the homes which are second residency will not be paid compensation, which ranges from 2,500 to 18,000 €, The period for the applications for help has been reduced from six to three months The Junta, the Diputation, and six Town Halls met to evaluate the damage, and the Sub Director remarked on the idea to get the unemployed to help with the clean up. Already the Junta has started to work on the 8,000 hectares which have been burnt, using techniques to avoid any erosion.

where experts said they believed it was Renoir's Paysage Bords de Seine - a river scene - from about 1879. The auctioneers expect it to sell for up to $100,000 later this month. It is believed the painting was bought from a Paris gallery in 1926. A Renoir plaque on the frame prompted the woman to have it analysed by a local auction house. baby girl found alive in a morgue in Argentina hours after being declared dead has gone home for the first time. The five-month-old Luz Milagros, or "Miracle Light", is in a stable condition but still uses a tube for feeding and breathing. Mother Analia Boutet and her husband had been told the premature baby was stillborn on 3 April. But when they went to a refrigerated morgue 12 hours later, they found the little girl trembling in the coffin. The baby was born in the northeastern city of Resistencia - three months before the due date and weighing only 780g (1.7lb).

Ponte Milvio bridge, Italy

Weird and Wonderful Strange news from around the world

T

hree men have been arrested in Delhi for trying to board a flight with small primates hidden in their underwear. Two of the men were found with slender lorises concealed in pouches in their briefs, a customs official at Indira Ghandi International Airport told the BBC. The men were transit passengers, en route to Dubai from Bangkok. The animals were uncovered when security guards noticed a bulge in their underwear during a frisk. The Press Trust of India reported that one of the lorises was 7in (17.8cm) in length. The condition of the animals was "OK, but deteriorating" according to the official, who declined to be named. They have been transferred to the Delhi-based organisation People For Animals, which said the lorises were being treated in hospital.

inspired by a story described in a novel. The city council said rust from the locks, which hang off chains, is harming the fabric of the bridge. The custom is inspired by a book by novelist Federico Moccia in which a couple place a bicycle lock around a lamppost and throw the key into the Tiber. The gesture was meant to symbolise the couple eternally locking their hearts together. It took off and clusters of padlocks can be found near other landmarks in other Italian cities. It is not the first time city authorities have stepped-in to break the locks apart. Last year the council started a round of padlock cutting after complaints from residents that it equated to vandalism. In 2007 the then mayor of Rome introduced a 50 euro (£40) a fine on couples found attaching padlocks to the bridge.

he life of computer pioneer Alan Turing has been commemorated in a special edition of Monopoly. The board's London landmarks, and its Community and Chance cards, have been swapped for places and events important in Turing's life. Players can move their pieces from his birthplace in Maida Vale to Hut 8 at Bletchley Park. Search giant Google has bought 1,000 of the sets and donated them to Bletchley Park to help raise funds The board of the special edition is based on a hand-drawn variant of Monopoly created by William Newman in 1950. William was the son of scientist Max Newman who was a key figure in Turing's life. The hand-drawn version was thought to have been lost but was rediscovered in 2011 and donated to the Bletchley Park museum soon after. “Bringing this board to life has been one of the most exciting and unique projects we've been involved with here," said Iain Standen, head of the Bletchley Park Trust.

OUT AND ABOUT - NERJA FERIA Feria de la Virgen de las Angustias y San Miguel Arcángel (2nd week in October).

ne of the big celebrations of the festive calendar in Nerja, 5 or 6 days of eating, drinking, dancing and general enjoyment. It is still an event where it is considered quite important to ‘be seen’. There are firework displays, processions, concerts and all sorts of activities.

O

have ‘casitas’, large marquees, where various different organisations stage all sorts of activities, including the election of the ‘Feria Queen’. There’s traditional flamenco dancing and singing, music concerts featuring well-known stars and general knees-ups, something to suit everyone.

At 10:00am each morning, throughout feria week, rockets alert the entire neighbourhood (or province!!) as to the start of the day’s festivities which then go on until the early hours, at the very least!

The vast majority of events are free of charge, but the music concerts attract a small entrance fee, usually around €10. Each casita has its own bar and all offer a variety of food. Feria is also a good excuse, if anyone ever needed one, to get dressed up, flamenco outfits abounding.

The fairground attractions occupy the central part of the feria ground and then all around the sides you

12 The Grapevine

One thing about feria in Nerja is

that it can almost certainly be guaranteed to rain at some point during the celebrations, regardless of the fact that it was probably hot and sunny before the event started and will be hot and sunny after it has finished. Feria and rain go hand in hand, similar to Wimbledon fortnight in the UK. The weather, however, does not dampen the spirits and the party goes on, although sometimes, as happened in 2008, the actual feria procession had to be cancelled. At one end of the feria ground is an area of bars where, at night, it becomes a seething mass of humanity as the music booms out and people dance away until the small hours of the morning.

FOCUS ON... MADRID A lively and vibrant city

T

he capital and the largest city of Spain, Madrid is located almost exactly in the geographical center of Iberian Peninsula. After London and Berlin, the city is the third most populous city in the European Union. The city is located on the river Manzanares in the center of the country, between the autonomous communities of Castile and León and Castile-La Mancha. Further, its economic, political and cultural importance makes Madrid one of the major cities of the world. In Spain, too, Madrid is best known for its great cultural and artistic heritage while it also boasts some of the liveliest nightlife in the world. Due to its economic output, standard of living, and market size, Madrid is considered the major financial center of the Iberian Peninsula. It hosts the head offices of the vast majority of the major Spanish companies, as well as the headquarters of three of the world's 100 largest companies. As the capital city of Spain it is seat of government and residence of the Spanish monarch, Madrid is also the political center of Spain. While Madrid possesses a modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighbour hoods and streets.

14 The Grapevine

The capital city of Spain and tourist hub – Madrid is a busy place , but never too busy to entertain and dazzle its enthusiastic visitors from far and beyond. Museums, macho matadors, regal palaces and royal gardens – Madrid, set scenically upon the banks of the Manzaneres River, is your gateway to Mediterranean Europe. Madrid may be lacking in architectural beauty compared with other major Spanish cities, but it makes up for this with its boundless energy, blue skies, art, culture and some of the most exhilarating and exhausting nightlife in Europe. The city is compact and easy to navigate on foot - most of the sights of interest are found in the downtown area between the Royal Palace and Parque del Retiro. The capital of Spain since 1562, Madrid sits in the geographic centre of the Iberian Peninsula and has long been an important stop on any art tour through Europe. The famous Museo del Prado on the city's 'Museum Mile' houses important works by Spanish and European masters from the Renaissance onwards, while the Museo ThyssenBornemiza houses one of the most extensive private collections in the world. The Museo Nacional

Centro de Arte Reina Sofia is devoted to 20th century Spanish art, with works by Miro, Dali and Picasso. Visitors wishing to take a break from all that art may want to see the Plaza de Toros, Spain's largest bullring, where regular bullfights are still held. Sports fanatics who like something a little less blood-thirsty can watch Real Madrid, or Atletico de Madrid, Spain's most famous football teams kick off. The city sits atop a plateau and is the highest capital in Europe, making its climate somewhat extreme with steaming hot summers and bitterly cold winters. Spring is the best time to visit and explore the squares and alleyways in the heart of this crowded city. Madrid is a lively city - nobody is really sure when the Madrileños sleep. It may be the afternoon siesta that gives them the endurance to keep things going well into the night. Plan several hours to see San Nicolas de los Servitas, then go shopping at Calle Serrano and the Gran Via. Visit the Victory Arch, the Palacio Real (the royal palace, with its own art treasures and crown jewels), and the Plaza de las Cibeles and Puerta del Sol (major intersections with fountains, monuments and shops). On Sunday, you must visit the Rastro Flea Market, located in La Latina, where you will find the Madrileño's real essence!.

o, if the Berni Inn menu in the Sugar and Spice article failed to get your taste buds tingling, here is a sample recipe from their new website www.ingredient.es Andy’s Special Saag This spicy spinach dish is easy to prepare and tastes delicious. Serve as an accompaniment to curry or as a vegetarian light meal or snack with some naan or chapatti. We eat it regularly and every time we feed it somebody they ask for the recipe, so here it is: Ingredients Cumin seeds 1 heaped tbsp Oil x 1 tbsp Onion x 1 finely chopped Garlic x 2 cloves crushed Turmeric x 1 tsp Vegetable stock 1/4 pint (we use Marigold Bouillon)

THE LIFE OF SPICE Sugar and Spice in Competa talk the future.

I

t is hard to date the first culinary usage of herbs and spices, but it is believed that herbs have been used for thousands of years, whilst spices have been found in Egyptian tombs from 3000 BC. One thing that is not hard is the desire to enhance the flavour of a bland piece of food; think stuffing without the sage or a cinnamon whirl without the, err, cinnamon. Anecdotally I have heard that curry powder was used on ships to cover the taste of spoiled meat on long journeys. There is obviously some truth in this as Linda Civitello outlined in her book Cuisine and culture: a history of food and people, spices have long been used in warm climates where there are more disease and meat has more chance of spoiling. This is due to the fact that many spices have antimicrobial properties, with cinnamon, mustard and cloves having the strongest inhibitory effect. It should also be noted here that garlic inhibits the microorganisms of Salmonella typhymurium, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, mycotoxigenic Asergillus and Candida albicans. Mmm, so garlic, mustard, cinnamon and cloves; which sounds to me like we are on the way to a decent curry recipe and having garlic breath is worth it!

30 The Grapevine

Like we pick up and begin to use words from different languages – many of us ex-pats living in Spain will now see where the English word ‘parasol’ comes from – we borrow tastes and flavours from all over the world resulting in a modern day row of restaurants featuring Thai, Indian, Italian and Chinese eateries rather than the row of Berni Inns we would have had in the 60s and 70s. Despite the founders of the Berni Inn chain being of Welsh Italian origin this was not reflected in the typical menu of the day which offered steak, gammon steak or plaice with chips, and peas. Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with that menu, but it really does illustrate how our tastes have developed and become more sophisticated. The current Beefeater menu (the Berni Inn’s successor) contains Paprika Chicken Salad, Spicy Cajun Burger, and Cajun spiced Salmon Fillet. Many people say they ‘live to cook as opposed to cooking to live’ and this can be illustrated with the fact that celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has now sold more than 10 million books (worth around £126 million) making him the second biggest-selling author since records began. The biggestselling author by the way is JK Rowling; but to be honest I have seen the Harry Potter films and the food they served in the Hogwarts’ dining hall looked a bit

ropey to me. I would like to point out here that the records only began in 1998 and that Delia Smith has sold over 21 million cookery books in her time. Either way you look at it that is a lot of cookery books. It makes you wonder what publishers were doing before 1998. Sitting around reading maybe? Only last night I made Jamie’s patatas bravas (I am not a real fan of his, but somehow own 3 of his books!) and I must say they were delicious. I must share this recipe with my Spanish neighbours some day. Actually I would not dare. I like to think that I am up to date with current affairs (wait a minute, breaking news, the Beatles have spilt up!) and just found a 2-day old article from the Independent newspaper website detailing that in the UK the sales of cookery books are at an all-time high, this despite the fact that thousands of recipes can be found on the internet. I would say proceed with caution. In the same way that any nutter can publish their thoughts on the internet- yes David Icke does have his own web site – anybody can upload a recipe to forums and blogs that are a waste of time. According to Amazon, the top five cookery books for autumn 2012 are by the usual suspects; Nigella Lawson, Jamie Oliver, Nigel Slater and Gordon Ramsay, but in the middle of those 4 at number 3 is Jerusalem by Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi heralding the rise of Middle Eastern cooking in the UK. This is my latest passion and introduces different flavours and food combinations that will surprise. For Christmas by wife bought me Malouf: New Middle Eastern Cuisine by Australian Lebanese chef Greg Malouf and more recently we purchased Crazy Water, Pickled Lemons by Diane Henry after it was recommended by fellow Competanian and allround good egg Debi Bond. So as a result of this our store cupboard new contains pomegranate molasses, sour cherries and

lavender extract – right next to the Heinz beans and Marmite. One common problem when cooking from some of the books above is the availability of the specified ingredients. Which is why we have created our new website www.ingredient.es to provide an on-line shop shipping to the whole of Spain. Although the website is still in its infancy we plan to grow it to offer the most comprehensive selection of ingredients available in Spain. This will range from well-known brands such as Patak’s and Blue Dragon right through to products from China, India and Thailand. The task of deciding what to sell on-line is a daunting one and as we add more and more items we realise that there will be a requirement for things like baking ingredients and vegetarian items. Based on what we sell in the shop we know that people want to buy for example cumin powder, tahini

and hoi sin sauce but is there a requirement for sour cherries and Lebanese 7 spice? Any feedback on this would be grateful either via email at info@ingredient.es or you could pop into our shop in Cümpeta, Sugar and Spice for a chat. Whilst on the subject of feedback, we’re really interested in increasing our German and Danish range, so if you have any views on those can’t live without or difficult to source items from home please let us know. The website is a bit of a labour of love and Debbie and I love sourcing and trying out the items we find. The evidence of this can be seen in our Recipe section which has some of our favourite tried and tested recipes. Again this will grow as we add more information and cook more new dishes! And once again we’d love to receive and share your favourites too.

As I said the web site is still in its infancy and we have lots of plans for further development, so keep checking it out to see what’s new. Future plans, some in the long term, and some that may be up and running by the time this goes to print include Asian cook wear, ingredient.es for life and home including some of the fabulous non-food items that we have in the shop. Our Moroccan range of furniture and home wares has expanded hugely and over the summer. We have supplied customers from Mijas to Granada who have been amazed at the choice and prices that we are able to offer. We also have some beautiful giftware, fabrics & home wares that we’d like to share further afield, so there is a lot to look forward to. Our ethos will remain the same, keep our operating costs and therefore our prices low and quality and service high and never stop looking for something new and something special.

7. How do you build strong relationships with your clients? Our client relationships are built by treating the client as we would wish to be dealt with if we were the client. We endeavour to ascertain their requirements, listen to them and make sure they are getting what they want from our services, especially with this industry people are not familiar with Solar Films and the benefits they provide to living in this environment and are often unsure as to how effective it really is,so informing the client properly is a key element of building a good working relationship. 8. What types of work does the company handle? Purely the addition of solar films to established properties 9..Does the company specialise in a particular field? Our speciality is window films that are applied to any glass or polycarbonate product which

includes cars/trucks, boats/yachts,homes, offices, conservatories etc. and also now Solar Blinds which work the same. 10. Can you manage full projects including submitting building plans and licenses? We never have to handle full projects because that is not the nature of our work but we often work with building companies from plans to quote for client requirements and in the UK we are registered with several trade related bodies in order to carry out work with local authorities. 11. Are you available for small 1 day jobs? Small jobs are part and parcel of what we do especially here in Spain because that's the nature of what the customers needs often are, i.e several windows that allow to much heat, a patio door set or glass curtains that have made living in that part of the home uncomfortable,

12. Most interesting or difficult job/work completed? We are currently involved in fulfilling a contract with a leading Vodafone franchise to install security/glass strengthening film to all their shop windows in Spain so that's certainly been interesting giving us the opportunity to see parts of Spain and visit some of the mayor provinces that otherwise we probably would not have been to. But what I enjoy about this business is being able to provide a product that on the face of it seems an unlikely solution to the dis-comforts we can experience from the sun but that does really work and to see the satisfaction the client gets when they realize it for themselves.

Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh. Mirabilis Jalapa.

F

ew plants can have as many common names as mirabilis jalapa! Some of those you’ll hear most frequently, though are there are many more too, are Don Pedro, clavillia, dondiego de noche, noche buena, Marvel of Peru or the 4 o’clock plant. From many of the names you can tell that it is an evening/night-time flowerer. In many climates, its flowers will open at around 4 o’clock, triggered by the cooler evening temperatures – with us, it is generally somewhat later – and they close the next morning as the heat of the sun rises though, on cloudy days, they can stay open all day.

46 The Grapevine

It’s one of those old fashioned, well-loved plants once commonly seen in cottage style gardens. With a lovely relaxed, billowing, cushioning nature and a rich fragrance for summer evenings, it deserves to be part of your garden too! The lance-shaped leaves emerge in late spring in thrusting clumps and each plant will fill out to a 1m ball. It grows at a rapid rate, so is a great filler plant in new gardens. The flowers blaze like mini trumpets in white, yellow, peach and pink, often striped like candy canes. Cold weather will cut back all the top growth but, don’t worry, for these little beauties are tuberous and they’ll be back again next

spring. Bees, butterflies and moths are drawn by their fragrance and colour and the black wrinkled seeds which develop will germinate in any nook or cranny. You’ll equally often see it growing amongst rubble or on waste ground – it’s not at all fussy and is a fast grower so great for those difficult to fill spots! They are also very pretty in pots on a patio or terrace that you use most in the evenings. Because of its profligacy, it can be classified as a weed – in parts of the U.S. for instance and it has naturalised throughout much of Europe and India. But our drier

climate here acts as a natural brake. Many countries lay claim to its origins – Mexico, India and Chile being the hot favourites for ownership! In most of South America it is a recognised healing plant; the Aztecs used to cultivate it and all parts of the plant were used for medicinal purposes. Whilst the seeds are said to be highly poisonous, various tribes use them as a pepper substitute but perhaps some immunity has built up with constant small-scale usage. The tubers and roots are often ground up and used externally for skin complaints, fungal infections, wounds and afflictions such as leprosy. Taken orally it expunges parasites. More modern research has shown that it is helpful against herpes, colds, flu and upper respiratory problems as well as for candida and yeast infections. Mirabilis – or wonderful – in every way! News Update: The next Homes, Gardens and Outdoor Living Show will bloom into action at the Palacio de Congresos, Estepona, Costa del Sol on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th November from 11 am to 8.00 pm, a fantastic show designed to give you ideas to form your perfect home and garden. Viveros Florena will have a stand there – a stand with a difference – and we’ll be selling a wide range of plants and pots, and signed copies of my book. Come and have a chat with us - I’ll be there to answer all your gardening queries and will also be giving a talk on citrus trees, so do come and have a glass of orange wine with us! round 56% of British people enquiring about the Spanish propert y market are actively interested in purchasing opportunities according to a study by Spanish real estate agent Inmoaction with 27% of respondents commenting that they would buy a second home in the countr y. Results from the sur vey of more than 1,500 people highlights that the decline in prices in the Spanish propert y market is increasingly attracting British buyers looking for a well priced dream home. ‘While the data shows that Brits seem to be showing a great deal of interest in Spanish propert y, we are seeing this interest translate into action,’ said Marc Pritchard sales and marketing manager of Spanish house builder Taylor Wimpey España. ‘While enquiries by Brits have increased by 5.5% in August this year compared to the same time in 2011, last month saw 53% of all our propert y sales in August made to British clients, the strongest sales month to British buyers since September 2010,’ he explained. ‘Opportunities to purchase qualit y properties in good locations at low prices combined with the strength of the pound to euro and 4% VAT has meant that Brits are prepared to act in order to take advantage of the current market,’ he added. Keen to capitalise on this activit y, the Spanish government and the Spanish Propert y Developers Association will be working together to formulate a plan that will target foreign buyers in order to help reduce the level of real estate stock on the market in Spain with a focus on Russia and China as well as European Union nations.

winter. Look about on a sunny day after the first rains and you can see autumn and spring hand in hand.

GARDEN OF EDEN Bodega Bentomiz in Sayalonga

I

t´s autumn...and it´s not. In schools they teach the children about the four seasons: spring when the sun and the flowers come out, summer when it´s hot and sunny, autumn when it gets cold and the leaves fall from the trees, winter when it´s so cold it snows. But that´s not how it goes here. Here the spring is often rainy and cool and that brings the flowers out just as happily as the sun. In summer most plants wither to brittle tinder and the leaves fall off the trees with the long hot drought. And a good autumn here is like a good English summer: pleasantly warm to hot, a threat of occasional rain but plenty of

80 The Grapevine

sunshine. That rain (occasional or not) provokes the water-starved plants into an extravagant burst of growth and flowering: a second spring. Many northerners say they would miss the autumn colours here. It´s true that the Sierras climb through a cloak of ever-green pines before their rocky heads emerge above the tree line. Clusters of poplars and larches in the rivers bring glimpses of leaf change. But while the banks and waysides are wreathed in fresh, flowering greens, the rolling slopes of vineyards make a carpet of colour: from September to November they turn from deep green through gold to amber to reds before they are cut back in

Bodegas Bentomiz, perched on a hillside above Sayalonga, enjoys the autumn´s cool summer climate, with refreshing breezes from the coast reaching the winery in early September. Last year´s wines have now been bottled and the frantic work of grape harvesting is done: the embryonic wines are developing in their tanks. Visiting the Bodega you don´t just see the glorious views and vineyards, you smell the wine: the air is ripe with the rich red fruity smell of the fermenting grapes. (Perhaps you don´t think a smell can have a colour, but it smells red to me!) A wasp or two buzzes sadly outside the tank; sure there is something interesting inside. Now the skill of the wine maker comes to the fore. The newly pressed fruit can be kept with its skins and pips (red wine) or without (white wine); for those with skins they can be mixed fiercely to encourage the release of their tannins, or not; cultured yeast can be added or natural yeast developed; the grape skins floating on top of the “must” (the fermenting grape juice) need to be moisturized continuously, pumping the liquid from the bottom of the tank to the top. Sugar and alcohol contents are assessed daily, to help control the vinification process. All these and many other factors have to be understood, monitored and managed. Understanding how they will affect the look, smell and taste of the wine to come is complex mixture of science and art! You can visit and witness this for yourself. After a hectic summer Bodegas Bentomiz is once again welcoming visitors tours or tapas tours: call or email to arrange it and you will be welcome to share in the sensory delights – sights, scents, and tastes – of our very own Garden of Eden.

BRONZE MEDAL I was watching the women's hockey with my girlfriend and started making fun when they only got bronze. "There's nothing wrong with bronze" she mocked "It's nothing to be ashamed of at all!"

"I'm afraid not," she sighed. "Anything you need just let me know." "There is one small thing you could do for me," I said. "Of course, anything!"

Yet when I told her later that she's the third best girlfriend I've had, she went mental!

"Watch the kids tonight," I replied. "I've got poker night at Dave's.

My neighbour rang me at work today.

The Love of My Life: I remember meeting him on a cloudy, rainy morning. I was awestruck to say the least. His chiseled features and pantie dropping good looks had me hooked from the start.

She said, "I'm afraid your wife has just been rushed off in an ambulance, I think she's stopped breathing." "Please, no, this is terrible," I panicked. "You must be joking?"

I'm quite surprised at the short amount of time, "Oh, you're so funny! I just love a man with a great sense of humour!" changes to: "What the is wrong with you?! Is everything a bloody joke to you?!" in my relationships.

THE INDOOR SWIMMING POOL IN TORRE DEL MAR is set to be finished by March of next year according to Velez Malaga Mayor, Francisco Delgado Bonilla. The mayor visited the construction site in Cerro del Aguila where the project is about 60 per cent complete. “We would like construction to be completed within the first few months of 2013. Even now in the month of August work is being done so that we can have one of the best indoor swimming pools in all of Malaga province,” claimed Delgado Bonilla. The overall budget for the installation is €3.4 million; €2.2 million will be covered by the town council and the remaining €1.2 million, by the Tourism Council of the Junta de Andalucia. Plans consist of two pools: one, a semi-Olympic size will have eight lanes and measure 25 by 16.6 metres, with a depth of 1.8 metres, and the other will measure 16.5 by 8 metres with the shallow end at 0.80 metres depth and the deep end reaching 1.20 metres.

TOM FERBER On Sunday the 16th of September our councilor of tourism Tom Ferber passed away, after fighting a long illness. Tom got to know Cómpeta when he was looking for a place in the South of Spain to spend his holidays, and he chose Málaga because it was the home of his Spanish teacher from the UK. Every summer holiday he spent here, until 9 years ago, after retiring, he and his wife Gwen decided to move here permanently.

Also, this month Bob the husband of Dee who provides Dog Grooming services passed away as a result of an accident in the campo.

Tom was councilor of Tourism since the elections in 2007 (5th on the list of the PP-Partido Popular), and he was also responsible for the foreigner´s office in the town hall and building bridges between all nationalities residing in Cómpeta. Tom Ferber set up a network of volunteers for the tourist office, which now has information available in 14 different languages.

The Dixie Swing Band,

Our sympathies are with both families at this sad time.
