Last month was a fabulous month for me! I celebrated my 40th birthday in style with all my friends and family. My brother, his wife and three children made a surprise visit from Australia. They arrived in Competa actually on the day of my birthday which also happens to be my brother's birthday too, only he is two years younger than me! We couldn't remember the last time we spent our birthdays together. On a sadder note our home was broken into last month and a few things were taken, one item was a bright pink tablet in a bright pink case. It was manufactured by Hudl and bought from the UK as a gift for my birthday. I hadn't even used it. The box, case and charger were all taken. If anyone sees it for sale anywhere let me know, it's very distinctive and a UK brand, so do get in touch. This month we have our property feature and respected Estate Agents in the area give advice and their opinion on the property market. See pages 54 to 63. Next month we start to plan our Christmas feature, so now is the time to start thinking about advertising in the next couple of editions for Christmas........ I know we are just ending our summer but Christmas is just around the corner!! .

Spain’s reckless boom-era infrastructure spending, which left the country mired in debt. Building and maintaining the facility has already cost taxpayers €170 million (£125 million). An investigation by the European Commission is underway to decide whether subsidies paid to the company SNC-Lavalin running the airport constitute illegal state aid. The fully booked flight, carrying 189 passengers, was the first of the Irish carrier's three weekly connections between the British capital and Castellón airport, close to Valencia. Ryanair, which is the only company currently operating scheduled flights to the "ghost airport", will soon add a service from Bristol.

bicycle worth €12,000 (£8800) stolen during the Vuelta a España (Tour of Spain) has been found on sale for a hundredth of its value in a second-hand shop by two Spanish policemen. Malaga police spotted one of Orica Greenedge team's bicycles while inspecting a shop for suspected stolen goods. The bike was stolen a few hours earlier from the Australian team's camp during the Vuelta. The Vuelta arrived in Malaga on August 24, on the third stage of the three-week race. The "exceptional technical features" of the bicycle and its low price - on sale for only €120 - attracted police attention, they said in a statement. Upon inquiring about it they discovered it was sold to the shop by a Malaga resident with a "long police record.”

millionaire French businessman was held hostage for two months in Marbella while criminals forced him to empty his bank accounts and convert his fortune into gold bars, Spanish police have

revealed. The kidnappers, described as “hardened criminals” aged between 45 and 57, held the unnamed Frenchman over the summer while they extorted €1.3 million (almost £950,000) of his funds. They then released him, telling him to continue sending them €100,000 (£73,000) per week on pain of death. “He was terrified,” police said. The gang – reportedly four or five men - was arrested in raids earlier this month in Marbella, a resort popular with Britons in southern Spain, but the case has just come to public light. Police only uncovered the kidnapping and extortion after the businessman’s bank signalled "totally atypical" activity, with large sums wired out of his accounts.

rom the theatrically poured cider of Asturias in the north of the country to the authentic Andalusian aperatif of a crisp glass of sherry in the south, Spain produces some of the most delicious drinks in the world. From Valencia's refreshing tiger-nut based horchata to a luxurious cup of hot chocolate (with a few churros to dunk on the side) let us guide you through the best beverages to order when visiting Spain. Tinto de verano: Although Sangria is synonymous with Spain for many visitors, Spaniards much prefer to drink tinto de verano, red wine mixed with lemonade. While many Spanish bars and restaurants rip off tourists with expensive sangria, bypass the tourist plonk for a refreshing glass of tinto de verano or summer wine. Gin-tonic: Spain has taken the old-fashioned G&T to hip new heights and changed the name in the process – make sure you order a Gin-tonic (pronounced hin-tonic) instead of a Gin AND Tonic. Served in a gigantic round glass with plenty of ice and fancy garnishes, Gin-tonics are the drink of choice in Spain’s coolest bars.

Beer: It's not enough just to ask for "dos cervezas por favor" when you're in Spain, as beers come in more varieties than you might realize. Most Spaniards will order "una caña" - a small thirstquenching size of beer - preferring smaller glasses so the beer stays cold and refreshing under the Spanish sun. You can also order "un tubo" - twice the size, or "una jarra / un tanque “ - a tankard. If you want bottled beer, order "un botella” or "un tercio" (a third, named after the size of the bottle). And if you fancy a shandy? Order "una clara”. Sidra: The northern Spanish regions of Galicia, Asturias and the Basque Country are famous for their ciders – Asturias accounts for 80 percent of Spanish cider production – and the drink is available throughout Spain, especially in specialist bars called sidrerías. The theatrical pouring of cider involves holding the bottle high above your head and pouring the drink into a wide glass to get air bubbles into the cider to give it a sparkling taste. Vermouth: Vermut is so popular in Spain it has its own time – la hora del vermut – or vermouth o’clock, the time just before lunch when Spaniards, especially those in Madrid and Catalonia, enjoy a
Txakoli: This dry white wine (pronounced chacolí) is produced in the Basque Country and is a favourite in Basque tapas bars all over Spain. Much like Spanish cider, Txakoli is usually poured from a great height into glasses to give it a sparkling quality and is the perfect accompaniment to a pintxo or two. Kalimotxo: this drink (pronounced calimocho), also from the Basque region, comprises of a 50-50 mixture of red wine and coca cola. It is a beloved tipple of young Spaniards engaging in botellón, or big outdoor drinking sessions, but has also crossed over and is nowadays available in most bars served with plenty of ice. Horchata: Traditionally from Valencia, horchata is definitely an acquired taste. It is made from tiger nuts, water and sugar. The refreshing drink has its own regulatory council to make sure the quality is up to scratch. The village of Alboraya is renowned for the quality of its horchata - and many orxateries, or horchata bars, line the town's streets. Sherry: Sherry or Jerez in Spanish, is named after the Andalusia town where the wine is made. Sherry in Spain is cool, not the sickly sweet drink beloved of grandmothers in many other countries. Like champagne in the champagne region of France, sherry can only be labelled as such if it from around Jerez, in southern Spain.

I now live in great luxury out in the Competa campo where I have made lots of friends and sleep on a blanket specially designed for me. I have an acre of garden to run around in when I'm not out walking with my mates and I regularly visit Oscars, El Pilon, Bar Miguel, Pericos and La Taperia. I am treated to the finest food at home; my favourites are chicken, sardines and almonds. I go swimming in the Fabrica, run on the beaches and climb in the mountains to which I'm chauffeured in the luxury of our open top car.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS This months update

ast month I wrote about Jagger, the dog who'd been living alone in a garden for several years and his search for a new home. We'd hoped he may have had a chance of a new owner in Scotland, but sadly this didn't materialise and Jagger, currently in a temporary foster home, is still desperate to find his forever home. He has a lovely temperament, gets on well with other dogs and would make a wonderful pet. He's 9 years old. If you can offer him a loving home where he can spend the rest of his days in a comfortable, secure environment please get in touch. If Jagger could speak he'd beg you to adopt him and would reward you tenfold with his love and loyalty. Jagger can't speak of course, but apparently Daisy can. And she can write too! has sent us the following letter, written by Daisy. “Dear Nina, I am writing this letter to thank you and all the volunteers at Action for Animals who work so hard to raise money and awareness on behalf of the disadvantaged animals in the Competa area. After being abandoned at the rubbish bins in Archez I was found and rescued by a kind Spanish lady called Jesusa who took me in and fostered me until I was found a permanent home. I was lucky. I spent one day a week for three weeks in the Action for Animals Charity Shop in the hope that I would find my new owner. One day, Liz came to see me and it was love at first sight for both of us. Frank wasn't quite so sure but it didn't take long for me to bring him round and now he wouldn't be without me. In fact I had him house trained in about two weeks.
I'm also quite the celebrity now, as I won Ist prize in Best 6 Legs at Scruffs Dog Show and was awarded 2nd prize in Best Rescue Bitch. Once in a while I do try to help out. I keep Liz and Frank safe at night by barking if I hear anything outside, although I'm not too keen on going out once they open the door. I have also been known to retrieve one of our pet quails that flew into the valley. It was both safe and well on its return; just a little bit moist! Actually the only problem I have in my very comfortable life is my relationship, or lack of one, with the neighbours cat. What a bitch she is! Anyway Nina, thanks to you, your team of volunteers and everyone who has helped me and all the other animals in Cómpeta and the local area. It's a dogs life! LEEP. we do it every day or rather night, we know we need it,and with a few exceptions we have rarely missed out on it each 24 hours that we live. We were urged by most authority figures throughout our young lives, that we HAD to sleep at least 8 to 10 hours EVERY night otherwise we would fall sick and be unable to work properly. Well waddya know? from sweet granny to bossy teacher, all those peeps were entirely right. Rather tragically there are folk who seem to think they have achieved something by reducing the hours they sleep and are apparently working harder and becoming more successful. Not so.
Reducing your sleep hours has an exponential negative effect upon judgement, health and mortality. After just one night of reduced sleep hours, our memory function decreases, we become more fearful and an aggressive response is more likely to be triggered. We are likely to compensate for our grogginess by eating the worst kind of breakfasts; something like a greasy bacon sandwich often seems to appeal. A lack of sleep is stressful, triggering undesirable chemical changes; it will age you, damage your skin, increase depression and aggravate poor eating habits which will enlarge your waistline. Also more colds and flu symptoms manifest, concentration is shot, moodiness and clumsiness

We need to be physically more active during the day. We need to spend less time in front of the television/ laptop and we need to learn a new sleep time discipline. Poor sleep habits can be unlearned. it takes a little time and some focused practice; tDo not eat or drink 3 hours before going to bed. tStop using electronics at least an hour before and do not take them with you into your bedroom. tGo to bed at the same time perhaps 10pm and arise at the same hour perhaps 6pm for 21 days this is about the time it takes new habit to become ingrained. tIf you have a sunny bedroom perhaps adjust these hours to arise with the sun The role of cerebrospinal fluid in the flushing of metabolic waste from the brain is hugely enhanced during sleep. This is interesting as sleep deprived people have less blood flow in the frontal lobe of the brain, the area that is responsible for sound judgment, good decisions and generally paying required attention. Clearly removing the garbage improves our actions, and the way to have the clearest of minds is self evident; getting enough sleep!

QUIT SMOKING AT THE SAUNA Smoke-free sauna time: Three days in the sauna can draw out nicotine in smokers' bodies and help them quit. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Spanish property prices rise for the first time since 2008 A price increase of 1.3% in three months augurs well for the future in Spanish real estate According to the Ministry of Development, it’s now official: the slump in the SpanishT real estate market is over. After six and a half years of falling property prices the figures for the second quarter of 2015 show a 1.2% increase over the last year, with the average price across the country being calculated at 1,476.80€ per square metre. This return to inflation comes as a result of a 1.3% rise during the second quarter of this year alone, and culminates a steady return to stability which began after the bottom of the second dip in the market was reached in late 2013. The Ministry reports that since the highest prices were recorded in the first quarter of 2008 the value of residential property in Spain has decreased by 29.7%, a figure which is significantly lower than those reported by other sources, but nonetheless all analysts now seem to be in agreement that the corner has finally been turned and prices are beginning to head upwards again. The market appears to be bouncing back after the difficulties of the last eight years.

In these three places, the owner's name should appear and the land and property measurements should be correct and all coincide. If you find out that this isn't the case with your property, maybe an extension or swimming pool wasn't registered when it was built, or simply that at the time of the last sale things were not done as they should have been, don't worry, we find that most things can be sorted out. For those who want to sell it is essential that these things are addressed and we offer a FREE consultation for people to book an appointment and bring along their paperwork and we will give them an individual and impartial review. For people thinking of buying, what often happens is that after having made an offer and negotiated a purchase price for the property they've decided on, they then appoint a lawyer to act for them, check the papers and take care of the conveyancing work for the purchase. Sometimes it is at this point that
the buyer gets to fully understand the state of the paperwork for the property and that actually all is not in order – after he may have paid a holding deposit and /or signed an Option to Buy agreement and made a substantial payment to the Lawyer to represent them. Therefore we offer a simple presales service of 'Investigation of Properties Prior to Purchase'. I
n the last edition of Grapevine I wrote about the services provided CUDECA Cancer Care. But there is so much more to say about this incredible organisation that it warrants a follow-up article.
CUDECA are proud to be an organisation that is entirely financially transparent. Their funding comes from three main areas and a whopping 69% is spent on patient care, and a tiny 7% is used for administration. charity shops raise largest proportion of funds (14 shops) community - collection tins, charity shops, fundraising events, regular donors, legacies public funding (18%) There are currently sixty employees covering medical services, complimentary therapies, administration, finance and fundraising, public relations, cleaning and maintenance. Over 700 volunteers of all ages give their time for countless tasks, including drivers, therapists, admin support, running local support groups, staffing the many charity shops, organising fundraising events…the list goes on. Medical staff are on duty 24 hours per day. Outpatients and their families are contacted every day to ensure the appropriate support is provided, and all services are

given completely free of charge to patients and their families. Each year CUDECA cares for more patients and families and therefore the organisation needs more funding year on year. After ten years of inpatient care some items need replacing or refurbishing - and there is a current programme to upgrade the nine bedrooms. Each of the spacious rooms has access to the beautiful garden with views to the Mediterranean, the beds can be taken outside so that the patients can appreciate the tranquility of the surroundings. The rooms are very comfortable and furnished with a spare bed for a relative to stay overnight, a comfy armchair, small table and chairs, flat screen TV and an ensuite bathroom. The cost to run each room for a year is 100,000 euros. The facility has grown considerably over the years and includes a well equipped playroom for visiting children and a peaceful chapel area with beautiful stained glass windows for quiet contemplation. There is also a large store room for the many types of equipment that are available to patients to enable them to be cared for in their own homes. The average inpatient stay is 1011 days. Forty percent of admitted patients go home and
receive care in the comfort of their own home. There are normally between thirty and forty days between initial referral and death. Eighty percent of patients are Spanish, the majority of the remaining twenty percent is British. CUDECA used to serve the whole of Málaga province, but now there are palliative care centres in Antequera, Ronda and Vélez Málaga run by the national health service. A new CUDECA day care centre is planned for Torre del Mar in the near future. Day centres are very important and provide independence for patients. There will be many volunteering opportunities to help run the new centre. It is possible to make a dedication to a loved one by commissioning a hand-decorated commemorative tile which will be mounted on a wall at the Benalmádena hospice, and can be viewed at any time during normal opening hours. CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Two Ladies of the Night.
D
id you know that there is not just one plant called Lady of the Night but two? We all know and love cestrum nocturnum for her scented charms – it is a 'must' planting in our Mediterranean gardens and wafts its intoxicating perfume along many a sultry street on summer nights. She has a host of common names: dama de noche, galan de noche, cestro, zorrillo, lady of the night and night-blooming jasmine being just some of them.

It is native to the West Indies though now naturalised throughout South Asia and it has to be said that it is a rather ordinary looking shrub which usually loses its leaves in winter with us. The flowers are a greenyellow colour in the form of fine tubes, opening at night. And that is when this somewhat boring bush explodes into life because its perfume is totally spectacular, tropical, rich and exotic. Some even find it overpowering, so don´t site it under a bedroom window or you may become totally drugged by its scent.
The shrub can reach 3m or even more if left unpruned but it really needs a yearly hard pruning to prevent it from becoming straggly. This is normally carried out during the winter months. The flowers start to form towards the end of spring and it can then flower off and on throughout the summer and into early autumn. Pruning after the first flush of flowers will encourage further blooming and help to control overly vigorous growth. Situate it in full sun or very light dappled shade; if temperatures are very

hot, the sun can burn its rather tender leaves. Equally, it is not happy in very cold conditions though tolerates the sort of winter temperatures we get. Overwatering can cause yellowing of leaves. If this happens, cut down on watering and apply an iron chelate to help re-greening. It reacts well to an occasional liquid fertiliser during the growing season. They are very prone to aphid attack – visible in curled leaves, especially at the growing tips – so keep an eye open and treat at the first sign of infection before numbers explode. Do remember that this shrub belongs to the solanaceae family (the same as potatoes and deadly nightshade) and should therefore be treated with respect as many of this family are very poisonous. There is little documented but it is believed that the white berries, at least, are toxic. The most common problem, however, is associated with respiratory problems, especially from asthma sufferers, resulting from the strong perfume. The much rarer dama de noche, or gladiolus tristis, is also known as the ever-flowering gladiolus, marsh Afrikaner, junquillo de olor or varas de San Jose. This is a real connoisseurs gladioli with a wonderful elegance and very difficult to find in spite of it being easy-going. A native of the Cape of South Africa – home to some 100 species gladioli - this wintergrowing species has a wonderful scent in the evenings too. From April or May its glorious, lily-like, greenish-white flowers progressively open along the length of the thin rush-like stems. It is unique amongst gladioli because it grows in marshy areas, poorly-drained ground or banks above streams though it is also perfectly happy in damp soil and also at high elevations. It is seen to spread rapidly in areas of winter rainfall and dry summer dormancy – luckily for us, our own

We have a visiting group of artists from the Alhaurin El Grande area. This dainty and delicious gladiolus The group is called 'The Finca Vida Painters' – after the name of grows from a corm 1cm to 2cm the finca where it all started 6 across, first producing three years ago! Reproduction is through little cormlets which develop at the base of the mother corm and also by seed and it can naturalise when suited – especially in Mediterranean climates. It is easy to grow in full sun, and in pots, and is hardy down to -5C. It looks delightful when allowed to grow naturally through ornamental grasses such as pennisetums, stipas etc. Applying a high phosphorus feed when in active growth will help produce more of the glorious gladioli flowers. Keep them very well-watered during their growing season but dry during dormancy in summer. I´ve heard that, in years gone by, this lovely plant was much more commonly seen but, for some reason, it seems to have largely disappeared. However, we have managed to attain some flowering-size corms and will have them at the Garden Centre by the time you read this article. Then you can let these two Ladies of the Night wander through your garden wafting their beguiling and bewitching aroma to entice the senses! PRODUCERS INVITED TO THE COSTA DEL SOL A group of producers from the UK, Holland, France and Denmark have been on a familiarisation trip to the area organised by Tourism Costa del Sol in collaboration with Antequera, Coin, Ronda and Malaga City councils and the Spanish Tourism Office in London. The promotional event was planned to encourage advertising and other types of filmings on the Costa del Sol by introducing producers to the area’s services and attractions.
The group, which stayed in the area in September, included representatives from The Location Guide, Warner Bros Studios Leavesden, Twickenham Studios, Nice Entertainment Group, Kanzaman Monaco, Dankelman Visual Productions, Rebel Movies and Heritage Media. Malaga-Costa del Sol Tourism head Elias Bendodo stressed that encouraging adverts and films to be recorded in the area is a good way of attracting tourists to the area and also helps create employment and extra income.
NEW PROMENADES The Ministry for the environments’ coastal department has developed plans to build promenades along two of the few remaining beaches in the province that don’t already have them. Torre de Benagalbón (in Rincón de la Victoria)and Nerja have been earmarked for the projects, however resident and environmentalist groups are protesting against the developments, arguing that promenades would have a huge environmental impact and that the current proposals only take into account the economic benefits of such developments. In Rincón de la Victoria, seven kilometres of promenade have been proposed and in Nerja the plans focus on a three-phase project. The first part of the Nerja plan would involve a 350-metre stretch between the mouth of the river Chíllar and the El Playazo area. In total, 700 metres of promenade would be built in the town.
