This time of year I love, it is when you realise what a pleasure it is to live in Spain. The UK goes into winter while we are still enjoying beach days and lunching outside. The children are now back at school and without a half term in October, as in the UK, it is straight through to Christmas without a break so our routine will be well and truly etched in over the next few weeks. Both children are at secondary school now which still sounds strange as I remember writing in an editors note in one of the first Grapevine magazines that they were off to start nursery at nine months old!! Mid month there is a bank holiday, 12th October, this is the Dia de la Hispanidad. The day is celebrated to commemorate the arrival of Columbus in Americas in 1906. It is also celebrated as the day of the Armed Forces in Spain. The day sees tranquil celebrations in the country. and is marked with the raising of Spain's National Flag in Madrid by the king of Spain. Also in October there is the Day of the Bicycle in Competa, along with the International Symposium Art event where 10 international artists will travel to the village to participate, see page 22. Artist Jo Dennison will continue her Fantasy to Reality exhibition into the middle of October and along with the Torrox and Nerja festivals its another fun month! Finally for any athletes out there, there is a 8k running race in Archez on Sunday 11th October. Enjoy and keep reading The Editor .
Inside This Month 22 International Art Symposium Art & creation...be moved by the energy, light & inspiration! 26 Competa Hikes Competa Hikes and Axareducacion, sponsor a free day out for the children in the region.

NEWS IN SPAIN This months update
A
62-year-old Spanish woman has announced that she is about to give birth to her third child, prompting criticism from the medical sector and calls for a limit on the age at which women can obtain fertility treatment. Lina Álvarez is eight months pregnant with a baby girl she said she would name after herself. “I feel like a woman of 30,” Ms Álvarez told the newspaper La Voz de Galicia. “I feel rejuvenated due to the hormonal changes and the joy that I feel.” Ms Álvarez, a doctor from Lugo in north-west Spain, said her first child was born with cerebral palsy 27 years ago after being damaged by the needle used in an amniocentesis. Then, 10 years after her menopause, Ms Álvarez had a second child at the age of 52, thanks to IVF treatment. When she decided she wanted a third baby, many clinics refused to help her because of her age. “But one gynaecologist in Madrid – who I won’t name as I haven’t checked if he agrees – said I should take some tests, and that if I passed we would try with an implanted embryo. "There was only a six per cent chance, but I got pregnant, with a girl. And I feel

fine and lead a normal life,” said Ms Álvarez of her “miracle”.“This person is taking on a huge risk,” José Antonio Castilla, the former secretary general of the Spanish Fertility Society, told the digital newspaper El Diario. “The law which regulates assisted reproduction states that treatment should only be given when neither the baby nor the mother is put at risk.” The law does not include a limit on the mother’s age, but doctors agree that beyond the natural age for childbirth, the likelihood of premature birth, hypertension, diabetes and haemorrhaging during labour is far higher. “If we take it that a woman does not get pregnant naturally after 50, we should not contribute to that overload on the body,” argued Juan Antonio Velasco, the director of the IVI fertility clinic in Madrid. “I had the same criticism when I had my son at 52,” Ms Álvarez responded. “But I don’t have a generational conflict with my children, I am open to life and healthy. Ms Álvarez’s baby already weighs around four and a half pounds, meaning that even a premature birth should not present any serious problems at this stage.
Spanish wetland home to 2,000 species of wildlife – including around 6 million migratory birds – is on track to join a Unesco world heritage danger list, according to a new report. Doñana is an Andalusian reserve of sand dunes, shallow streams and lagoons, stretching for 540 square kilometres (209 square miles) where flamingoes feed and wild horses and Iberian lynx still roam. But the Doñana region is said to have lost 80% of its natural water supplies due to marsh drainage, intensive agriculture, and water pollution from the mining industry. Spain now has until 1 December to declare Doñana permanently off limits for dredging and industrial activity in a report to Unesco, or face becoming the first EU country to have a national park classified as being “in danger”.Eva Hernández, a spokeswoman for WWF, which is launching a campaign to save Doñana said that the park’s situation had become critical. “Doñana’s biodiversity has eroded over the last 40 years and we are reaching a point of no return,” she said. “We could do things to recover the park – and some things are being done – but the pressures on it from private and public companies are becoming unbearable. We must decide whether it is more important to consume all of Doñana’s resources or to preserve its biodiversity and services to the people.”
M
ore than 100 rail passengers were left stranded in Spain after their driver stopped the train because he had reached the maximum number of hours he could legally work, officials have said. The train, operated by Spain’s state rail company, Renfe, had left the northern city of Santander bound for Madrid. After failing to find anyone to take over, he got off the train “saying that he had exceeded his shift hours”.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS Puppies Galore and a Pram Rally!!
S
eptember was puppy month at Action for Animals, when six puppies were brought to us for rehoming, having been found abandoned at just four weeks old. The first two were brought to us at 10a.m after being discovered in a cardboard box in Cómpeta, where they'd been left outside the house of a known dog lover. Unfortunately the owner of the house was away, so the dogs had been there for some time before a kind neighbour spotted them and carried them to safety. The second litter of four pups arrived at our shop an hour later, having been dumped outside Portichuelo in Cómpeta. All six pups have been fortunate enough to find emergency foster carers, but their foster carers can no longer keep them, due to other commitments. These pups urgently need fostering until we can find them permanent homes. Fostering is rewarding work and we can provide you with everything you'll need to take care of these little beauties – including large cages to keep them safe while they're in
14 The Grapevine
your home, if you're worried about them getting under your feet! But most of all they need their forever homes. We hope these photos might persuade you to adopt one and if you'd like to meet them you can pop into our shop and see just how gorgeous they are for yourself. Our little bottle fed kitten, Alfie, is also now ready for adoption, so please ring me if you're interested, or call in to meet him any Wednesday, when he visits the shop with Sandiey, his foster mum. On November 26th we're organizing a fundraising fancy dress pram rally around the streets of Cómpeta. If you'd like to participate, we're looking for teams of up to five people, in fancy dress, using homemade, decorated prams. Starting at Plaza del Carmen and finishing at Bar Lorena, there'll be various compulsory ‘pit stops’ at bars and restaurants along the route, where all teams will be
required to collect a coupon, as proof of their visit. There will be prizes for first to finish the course and the best dressed pram and team. So pimp your pram and come and join the fun! . The race is open to over 18’s with an entry fee of 5€ per person – spectators free! . Entries open from October 2nd Application forms and more information from our charity shop. Action for Animals Charity Shop, Avenida de la Constitución 59, Cómpeta. Opening hours: 10.00-14.00 Monday to Friday and 10.00-13.30 Saturday

The Artists will have the chance to make new contacts, be inspired, and possibly develop themselves further. They will also of course get the opportunity to enjoy the rich Spanish culture. The event will be open to the public. The Symposium will open on Monday October 17th. at 11am. There will be a welcome ceremony for the artists with each of them giving a brief talk about their art. Ten artists will participate, from the countries of; Poland, Denmark, Belgium, Spain, Belarus, Armenia and the Netherlands. If all goes as planned also artists from Azerbaijan and India. In fact the week begins on Saturday the 15th October when the artists first arrive. Sunday 16th is an excursion day in cultural Malaga.
From Monday the 17th to Friday the 21st, they are at work in public areas in the centre of Competa; the Salon de Actos, 'Casa la Fabula', the home of Danish artist Eva Joensen and the gallery garden. Villagers, art lovers and tourists can come and observe the process of creation. The artists are working in their own particular style, with spontaneity, originality and creativity. The great thing about this event, is that people can meet the artist in person. The event will help to gain insight into the life of an artist and the process of creating art. Lieuwke Loth runs the gallery and is an artist herself. Unable to contain her enthusiasm for art events she decided to fully invest her energy into forming this gathering of creative minds. She is now the organizer of the LUZ symposium, the Art Days and Artwalks. Lieuwke herself has experienced how enriching a symposium can be. She discovered that finding inspiration, energy, joy and good artist-friendships is an invaluable thing. This created a strong desire to offer this same enrichment to
her colleagues in Spain. On the morning of Monday 17th, Bronzecaster Daan van Neerven will give a brief explanation of the casting process and techniques. He will come all the way from Holland to give a bronze casting course and show the process of bronze casting. The course will be teaching the techniques to cast small bronze statues. He will be working at Casa La Fabula, Eva Joensens studio. For more information about participating in the course, daily schedule and times of casting: check the gallery website or facebookpage. Lieuwke Loth is a sculptor and will prepare wax models to be cast during the week. Her bronzes can be seen on the website: www.lieuwkeloth.com and of course in the gallery Luz de la Vida! At the end of the week all pieces of art will be collected and we'll make a nice art exhibition of it all. The inauguration of the exhibition is on Saturday the 22nd October at 12pm in the Galeria Luz de la Vida. You are welcome to celebrate the outcome of a week full of creativity together with the artists! The exhibition will be open on Sunday the 23rd, and then according to the opening hours until the end of November. A number of works will be on sale during the exhibition so for anyone looking for a unique, good quality, piece of art come along! If you like this kind of event you can support it by purchasing art. Art Symposium LUZ will be organized by Galeria Luz de la Vida/ Lieuwke Loth. Everyone is welcome to come to this very special event! The village is worth a visit - plenty of nice bars and restaurants whilst also being surrounded by beautiful nature. .WHAT TO DO IF THE REAL BUILT/PLOT SIZE DOES NOT CORRESPOND WITH THE DOCUMENTED AREAS ON THE DEED, IN THE LAND REGISTRY OR IN THE CADASTRE
T
here are often discrepancies between the real meters of a property or plot and those which are registered in the Land Registry or Cadastre Office. This can be due to extensions being added to a property, or in the case of land, to the segregation of a plot from a larger plot, without reporting these changes to the correct authorities, (i.e. the Land Registry and the Cadastre office). These discrepancies can cause problems when applying for a mortgage as Banks will not finance a property that is not correctly registered. In order to rectify the situation a new deed must be made declaring the new construction or segregation and specifying the actual size. This would require a Certificate detailing the actual meters to be issued by a qualified Architect which should then be duly registered in the Land Registry. In reality the measurements in the Land Registry and the Cadastre Office rarely match, because the measurements in the Registry are from
24 The Grapevine
measurements taken by an Architect and the surface areas in the Cadastre Office are taken from aerial photographs. If you have any problems regarding the discrepancies between real measurements and those documented in either the Land Registry or the Cadastre Office you would need expert legal advice on the best way to rectify the situation. In most cases it can only be done by submitting documentation relating to the property, such as the Deed of Sale, the Deed of New Construction, plans, drawings, photographs, certificates etc. to the Cadastre Office so that their technical staff can proceed to update the specifications and modify the documented areas. There are also many cases where the property or plot is not registered under the name of the actual owner in the Land Registry or the Cadastre Office. In these cases it is not simply a matter of rectifying the measurements, but a matter of registering the property or plot for the first time. If this necessary, in addition to submitting documentation to
prove the physical reality of the plot or property you would also need to provide at least the last 4 years of IBI (rates) receipts. To avoid all of these problems, we always recommend that before buying a plot or a property you should check the Land Registry and Cadastre office to ensure that the details are correctly documented. This process would require the assistance of a qualified expert who can make all of the necessary enquiries to confirm that everything is in order. 4 kids, the Park Ranger, Competa Hikes and Axareducacion set off to the high road. Walking sticks, water bottles and quizzes in hand, the wonderful excitement that only children can provide, buzzing around us, for our monthly walk with the children of Axarquia. Kids walking A 2 hour walk ahead of us, full of the history of the Old Silk Route between Malaga and Granada, spring bloom, aromas of medicinal herbs and new life beginning again with birds nesting, butterflies skipping and bees conducting their important daily work…. And out of the clouds, that had cast their grey shadow over us for days, came the sun, happy to see us all out and about on such a rewarding mission. Every month Competa Hikes {www.competahikes.com} and
26 The Grapevine
Axareducacion {www.axareducacion.com}, sponsor a free day out for the children in the region, and their parents. The aim of this initiative, is to get children and their families walking together, out in the splendid natural environment that we are spoiled to live in. To show them how stimulating and exhilarating such a simple activity can be, to teach them about all the interesting plant and animal life right on their doorstep, and to commit them to preservation and conservation of the area. To give them such a love of life here at an early age so that they grow up with the respect such an environment deserves and needs of the next generation. This walking route is a challenging hike, climbing high above the Patamelara river valley, where few walkers tread the path, but where the nightly antics of Ibex, Wild Boar and others create a route of
wonderful challenges, exciting for the children that tire easily of ‘boring’ flat wide tracks through the mountains. This is the perfect and appropriate route to challenge the physical ability of the children and at the same time engage their interest in all that is around them, as we ‘cut our way through the jungle’! And so we hiked along a single, narrow, wild goat track, climbing over fallen trees, weaving through thick bush and shrub, and watching the wildlife busy with its Spring duties, not least Falcons and White Booted Eagles nesting in the high cliffs above us. Throughout the hike we were flanked by stunning views of the highest peaks here in the Almijara and Tejeda mountain ranges, the Mediterranean sea and the North Coast of Africa. And every 30 minutes or so we would stop for a drink and a briefing from the

Park Ranger, resting on ancient stone walls that once upon a time, edged the Old Silk Trading route between Malaga and Granada. Here we reflected on the challenges these traders faced, with only donkeys to carry their precious loads of spices and silks that originated in Africa, docked in Malaga and now would bear fruit for these traders, at the markets in Granada. The children learned about the animals that love in these mountains, about the highest and smallest peaks of this sierra range, about what is dangerous and what is good, about medicinal herbs and their uses, about the importance of various plants and trees, and about what we can do to ensure we do not ruin this natural environment. Back at Finca Los Pinos, the walking lodge of Competa Hikes, the children enjoyed a well deserved swim in the heated outdoor pool and a large freshly

made Paella and salads. And then it was time for the quiz. Their enthusiasm warmed my senses [perhaps it was just the promise of prizes] but I truly believe they were very excited to show us what they had learned. And for us, I was keen to understand if this initiative was effective. Are the children really learning? With the final question of the quiz asking for free writing of thoughts and views by the children themselves, we would also be able to understand their sentiment. Well sentiment was truly inspiring as the children wrote about how much they loved being outside and hiking high I the mountains, and they had absorbed so much of the knowledge that was imparted on them by the Park Ranger. This indeed had been a successful day against our objectives and mission. It was a tough call for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, but ultimately all the
children received a little prize , prizes linked to the outdoors, walking and nature. For me this day and all the other days we have had walking with children over the Autumn, Winter and Spring 2015/2106, have taught me so much about this young generation, their yearning for knowledge, and their ability to comprehend way more beyond what is simply physically in front of them. And that we need not lose heart over the seemingly abrasive and harsh thrust of technology they face and love so much in this day and age. The great outdoors, nature and the environment still hold much entertainment and interest for this new generation. Our challenge therefore only lies in ensuring they are exposed to the great outdoors, and that we continue to drive their opportunity to be part of it.

In both the shop and the website Moroccan decor is still a big part of lives. It's often not an out of the box purchase, many items are individually designed and made . This year we have designed and produced furniture including daybeds, sofas, corner fountains and an incredible mosaic table with a fire pit. Anything from individual pieces to complete terraces and rooms & homes.
Whats new and whats coming up.
O
ne of the questions we are most frequently asked is what is the difference between Sugar and Spice and La Casa Bella. The website is all about decor, whilst Sugar and Spice is a community based shop. They can best be described as the same flavour. Whilst we don't have all the things on the website in the shop - we would need a building as big as Ikea - we do have many decorative bits and pieces in the shop that we don't have on the website. www.lacasabella.es - website Our ecommerce furniture website www.lacasabella.es has now been up and running for 18 months and has provided us greater opportunities to increase our furniture, gift and home wares ranges and expand our styles. We are constantly tracking down new suppliers and finding new products that complement our existing ranges. Anything that is available on the website can be ordered through the shop, just send us an email or call in.

Sugar and Spice - shop In the shop we've been knocking out walls, moving things round and mixing things up. We've shifted the emphasis of the shop making it adaptable. We have increased the space in our furniture show room by 50% and added more room in the main shop. We want to make our space as flexible as possible so that we can keep changing the stock to bring you a different shopping experience each time you visit. The extra space has allowed us to increase the furniture ranges on display to include examples of our 6 best selling furniture lines. (see www.sugarandspice.es for more information). What we don't have is one of everything available in the range but what you can do is view the quality of the furniture before you make your choice. We have over the autumn been resting our ladies clothes lines. In September the wholesales were full of winter woolies, whilst the temperatures we're pushing 40C on some days. We currently have a selection of wraps and cardigans for chilly evenings and we'll have more lovely ladies fashions arriving to suit the weather.
At both Sugar & Spice and La Casa Bella we aim to bring you more of what you want, fresh ideas & new treasures for every day. It is our mission is to provide an experience full of inspiration & style, where shopping is a pleasure, where you can always expect more and pay less. Alick Howard
THE RELAUNCH OF BROGAN PROPERTIES Steve Brogan and Alick Howard form a team.
I
t was with great pleasure that last month The Grapevine interviewed Steve Brogan. I met Steve nearly 13 years ago when he helped us buy our villa and we have been friends ever since. 10 years ago he set up Brogan Properties, a real estate business based in the Cรณmpeta area. He became a well known and respected real estate agent in Cรณmpeta and the surrounding villages. He sold many properties to clients who subsequently became friends. Before Steve came to Spain he owned and ran recruitment businesses in Hampshire in the south of England, together with his partner. He gained a wealth of experience in understanding and meeting clients' needs. This knowledge proved invaluable when establishing and running
44 The Grapevine
his estate agency business. Following an extended break, Steve has decided to relaunch Brogan Properties. This came about when he was socialising with friends one afternoon, one of whom explained they were looking to buy another property in Cรณmpeta and they detailed the type of property they were looking for. Steve realised he knew of a property that could be a perfect match for them. Within a few days they were viewing the property, they loved it and put in an offer. The offer was accepted and the sale is currently going through. His friend and the seller were over the moon. The sense of satisfaction Steve gained from this exercise made him realise that he should be back in the real estate business. He was under no illusion that
starting up a real estate business again would be hard work, however he was fully refreshed and ready for the challenge. Having made the decision to start again in Cรณmpeta with his extensive knowledge, experience and contacts the natural progression is the relaunch of Brogan Properties. An added bonus presented itself which was a chance to build the business with the help of someone else, Alick Howard, who is also a well known and established businessman in Cรณmpeta. This seemed the perfect fit to complete the plan. He could start the business and share the work load. This would mean he could try and keep the work/life balance he didn't perhaps achieve last time. Working with other people would present new opportunities, ideas

and possibilities for Brogan Properties. Steve was keen to point out that with more people, Brogan Properties could provide even better customer service and a larger support network could only result in positive benefits for the clients and the business. Steve and Alick will become the face of Brogan Properties and they will build on the platform Steve established previously. Steve still has many contacts in the business and worked well alongside other Estate Agents in the area. He is experienced and credible in the industry. He has maintained contact with the legal profession and local Town Halls. As a consequence, he is fully conversant with all aspects of the buying and selling process. October will be the relaunch of Brogan Properties and their new

website will be online this month with a new web address www.broganproperties.net. This web address has changed slightly and is not to be confused with the previous one used for Brogan Properties. As Brogan Properties will be primarily a web based real estate agent, the website has been designed to be fast, responsive and search engine friendly. As a consequence it is designed to reach a far wider buying audience. It will be fully responsive, which means as well as working well on desk top computers it will be tablet and mobile friendly. You will be able to save properties to a 'favourites' list without having to log in and will be able to find your dream home using full search and filter options. The site will provide you with local news and information on the property market and buying a
property in Spain. So if you are selling your home, or thinking of selling your home, please get in contact with either Steve or Alick to list your property on the new Brogan Properties site. Brogan Properties will be providing a complete service, which will include pre and post sale advice. We will accompany clients throughout the complete buying and selling process. BUY A HOME SPAIN Austin and Angela celebrate over 10 years of business. .
1
0 years ago Buy a Home Spain, originally called Rent a Home Spain, was started by Angela Taylor from her villa in Torre del Mar. Angela and Austin Taylor had bought a second villa in Spain and therefore decided to rent out their holiday villa for ÂŁ1,500 a week. The a few friends who wanted to do the same, asked for help. As Angela had run a number of her own businesses in the UK and, ever the entrepreneur, she was happy to help and soon Rent a home Spain was launched with Angela working from home. In 2006, they moved permanently to Spain to retire; however due to the recession, Austin ended up going back and forth to the UK continuing with his previous business whist Angela built up their business in Spain. The business took off

immediately and became too much for Angela firstly to run from home and secondly to run on her own. Austin found commuting back and forth from the UK exhausting, so they took the gamble to invest in their business and open up a shop front for their Rent a Home business in Torre Del Mar. The idea was to continue with rentals but also diversify into house sales too. The location was Avenida de AndalucĂa, a great spot, but the premises soon became too small for them and they moved to a bigger office as the business grew. In fact, it was house sales that were becoming the more dominant part of the business, so not only was there a location change they also changed their name to include Buy a Home Spain. Two more moves followed and now they are in an excellent location opposite the Bus Station
on the main road still in Torre del Mar. Austin explained that they put both effort and investment into the business at a time he felt other Estate Agents on the coast became complacent. Traditionally, before the recession, Estate Agents had buyers walking through the door and had almost to fight to buy their home in the sun. Once the amount of clients began to drop in the area, Estate Agents needed to work harder, but many didn’t and so closed during the recession. Austin believes they have always gone that extra mile. Not only do they show their clients houses but also the way of life in Spain. They often take potential buyers to see the sites in the area, out for tapas, out for dinner in order to show them the lifestyle here in Spain and help them with their

research. In addition to effort, investment was key too during recession; Buy a Home Spain which the business became called, dropping the rent a home part, invested heavily in “A Place in the Sun” exhibitions in the UK. They flew all their staff to the UK and took part in all of the exhibitions around the UK. Angela was asked to be on the experts’ panel and their stand became one of the most popular to see over the 5 years they participated. It was an expensive gamble but it established their name in the business. They have now decided to stop the exhibitions to invest more in internet advertising and marketing. Over the last two and half years they have enjoyed impressive sales and growth and this summer they achieved a record

number of sales. Angel and Austin saw they were selling more and more houses in Puente Don Manuel, Los Romanes, Alcaucín, Periana and the surrounding areas and felt a physical presence would be advantageous to them and give more confidence to buyers and to sellers listing their property. Not only this, but of course customer service is intrinsic to house sales so they would be better provided nearer to the client. Therefore this year they opened up their second office in Puente Don Manuel.
Austin and Angela built Buy a home Spain from scratch, experienced growth in recession, now have two offices and numerous staff, speaking a variety of different languages; so is it time for retirement I now asked? They replied: ‘Not yet we still have more plans and objectives to achieve!’
Austin and Angela also made the decision to become a member of Top House Spain where over a thousand Estate Agents list properties for each other to access, thus giving sellers more exposure and buyers a bigger choice. This has proved invaluable with some recent sales with clients looking for

increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.
Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es

SETTING GOALS & HOW TO MAXIMISE YOUR ABILITY TO ACHIEVE THEM. Advice from fitness coach, Adam Irving
T
his month I wanted to talk to you about goal setting, you see whether you realise it or not we all set many goals in our head every single day. Do you ever find yourself thinking “I want that” or “I wish I could do that” in effect what you are doing here is setting yourself a goal but then not executing a plan to reach that goal. As goal setting is hot in my own life right now I wanted to share with you my three top tips on how to maximise your ability to achieve your goals. Understand your WHY- what I mean by this is ask yourself why you want to achieve this goal. Goals must be broken down and fully understood before you can put a plan together. Ask yourself if you have set yourself this goal

before, if so can you follow the same plan to reach it again or do you need to change your approach? If you didn't hit this goal last time you set it, then what needs to be done differently this time in order to maximise your potential? Creating new DAILY HABITScreate a plan, what can you change in your life right now in order to get one step closer? Let me give you an example, when baking a cake it doesn't just happen in the blink of an eye. You break the cake down, firstly you look at what ingredients you need, you follow the instructions, sometimes you have to improvise but you follow the proven system as best as you can. Creating new daily habits is exactly that, you add your ingredients together and then you focus on the process in
order to create the best possible outcome! VISUALISE yourself achieving your goals- firstly break your goals down into categories. For example: Health/Fitness, Self Development, Personal and Business. Write your goals into the category they fall in and then stick them up where you will see them multiple times throughout the day. Each time you see your goals, pick a category and visualise yourself achieving that goal. If possible stick them up where other people can see, this will hold you extra accountable You can implement the above in all aspects of life, every forward move you make gets you one step closer to where you want to be. moringa seed pods
CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Miracle Tree, moringa oleifera.
I
It is said that the moringa tree could virtually eliminate worldwide malnutrition. Importantly, it is endemic to or can be grown in many of the most impoverished countries and those that are constantly being hit by food crises. It has been identified as the vegetable with the highest nutritional value; the abundant leaves are rich in proteins, all essential amino acids, and a high range of vitamins and minerals and disease-fighting anti-oxidants. They have been used for centuries in traditional medicine and Ayurvedic medicine associates it with the cure or prevention of about 300 diseases, including lowering blood sugar levels, as an anti-inflammatory and it naturally controls cholesterol levels.

This miracle tree is certainly causing a stir – every part of the tree can be used - leaves, flowers, seeds, bark and roots. 100 g of fresh leaves contains the same protein as an egg, as much calcium as a glass of milk and as much vitamin C as an orange. The same amount of dried concentrated leaves contain 9 times the protein of a pot of yogurt, 10 times the vitamin A of a similar weight of carrots, 15 times the potassium of a banana, 17 times the calcium of a glass of milk, 12 times the vitamin C of an orange and 25 times the amount of a similar serving of spinach.
vegans. It is also very good at protecting us from osteoporosis and other bone conditions. Many cosmetic companies are now adding moringa to their creams and lotions for rejuvenating skin. More important is its ability to mop up harmful matter. It is an excellent body detoxifier and can even provide some protection against arsenic poisoning. You may think that is hardly important to you but many of our staple grains, such as rice, and our water are showing signs of arsenic as well as heavy metal contamination. Moringa seeds are now recognised as good natural water purification tools.
It's hardly surprising that the moringa tree is seen as a very important aid for combating malnutrition and a useful protein source for vegetarians and

benzoil tree (from the oil derived from its seeds). It is a fastgrowing and drought-resistant tree native to the southern foothills of the Himalayas in north-western India. It is widely cultivated in semiarid, tropical, semi-tropical and warmer temperate areas. The radish-flavoured young foliage is eaten as greens, fresh in salads, in soups and boiled or fried. The young seed pods are also cooked. Older tougher leaves are dried and powdered. The mature seeds can be roasted and are eaten like peanuts and the roots are a horseradish substitute. Cold-pressed moringa oil is very beneficial, though expensive. India is the largest producer of moringa with an annual crop figure of around 1.5 million tonnes of fruit. So, can we grow this magical tree in our gardens? Well, yes. It tolerates a wide range of soil types (including impoverished ones), it is a sun and heat lover and drought resistant. It does not like water-logged soil and will not tolerate long periods of freezing conditions, though it is okay with a touch of frost, especially once established. Outside of tropical areas, it will become deciduous during the winter. It is an extremely fast grower; in ideal conditions 6m a year has been observed though, more normally, 4m. This means that, in cold areas, it can be grown as an annual crop. The tree will ultimately reach a height of 12m but it is more often pruned to 3m or 4m for easier cropping. The bark is grey-white and corky. The white flowers are fragrant and bisexual, held in drooping clusters. Flowering is normal six months after planting from seed; in temperate areas a yearly springtime flowering is normal but in tropical climes, flowering is, more or less, continuous. The

Within 3 years your tree will be producing around 500 pods annually and, once mature, can yield 1500 pods. For permanent plantings, use a 3m spacing. Prune annually to remove any dead wood and lower the canopy if cropping is important. Commercially, every five years the tree is cut down to about 1m tall to encourage vital new growth. If you want to try growing it as an annual, make sure to pinch your seedlings regularly to encourage bushing; space young plants about 1m apart, you will find them very prolific croppers when they are so young and vigorous. Moringas have a long taproot with lots of small feeder roots but no lateral spreading roots. This taproot is what makes it so droughtresistant. In very hot, dry conditions, water regularly for the first 2 months after planting; subsequently give it an occasional long soaking if the tree seems to be suffering. Bumper crops are produced in wet tropical conditions; in arid conditions, the yield will be less though flowering can be provoked by irrigation.
