October Weather Days with rainfall: 4 Days

October is a lovely month in Spain. Just as the UK is moving into some very cold weather, we are enjoying beautiful sunny days and even some beach days for those living on the coast. However, this year as the glorious summer came to an end it was finalised with a huge electric storm. Some of my Spanish neighbours described it as the “fin del Mundo”! It really was a sight to see with the sky lit up over the coast and then the following sudden downpours. This was the result of the 'Dana' weather phenomenon - an isolated pocket of cold air that breaks away from main weather systems, termed a cut-off low - this crossed Spain leaving widespread flooding and six dead in parts of Valencia, Murcia and eastern Andalucía. The number of residents affected by the storms in Andalucía as a whole was 2,415, with damaged estimated at 10 million euros. The following morning was a bit of a clear up operation although nothing like what I saw on television where the storms had devastated parts of the country. Looking forward, the weather has stabilised and in fact we are enjoying temperatures slightly higher than normal. It was really unfortunate the storms, wind and rain arrived in September just as my family arrived to visit and then left just as temperatures soared again! Enjoy and Keep Reading The Editor

a 67-57 win over Australia. The United States won the last two tournaments but were knocked out by France in the quarter-final round earlier in the week. Argentina then beat France in the semi-final. In the final game, the Spaniards scored first and never relinquished the lead. They relied on superior defence and rebounding to snuff out the offensive threat of 2004 Olympic champions Argentina. Point guard Ricky Rubio racked up 20 points and three assists. Marc Gasol and Willy Hernangomez swatted three shots each as Spain pulled down 47 rebounds, 20 more than Argentina, en route to a comprehensive victory. The 32 team tournament was hosted in China.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS Taxes to pay when buying or selling a property in Spain

T

axes to pay when buying or selling a property in Spain in Andalucía around 15% of property purchases are carried out by foreigners and the foreign population in the province of Málaga reaches the 14%. If you are considering purchasing or selling a property in Spain then you should be aware that a number of taxes have to be paid. Vendors or buyers should be aware of these tax implications so that they can be budgeted for in advance and taken into account in the agreed price. TAX CORRESPONDING TO BUYER: 1 - “IMPUESTOS DE TRANSMISIONES PATRIMONIALES” (ITP) - This tax is payable whenever a second hand property changes hands by sale. It is charged by the autonomous region, (CCAA), in which the property is situated and is generally calculated at a rate of 8% of sale prices up to 400,000€. If the selling price is higher other increased percentages are applied to the difference. It should

16 The Grapevine

be paid within 30 days of the signing of the purchase deed by the buyer. 2 - VAT & AJD - In the case of the purchase of a new property when the buyer is the first occupier the tax charged would then be VAT, which is calculated at a rate of 10% of the sale price of the property and in addition 1.5% AJD would also be applied. TAX CORRESPONDING TO VENDOR: 1 - “PLUSVALIA” - This is a municipal tax payable every time a property changes hands whether by sale or inheritance. This is a charge for the increase in the value of the land during the years of ownership and is calculated by the Town Hall based on the Cadastral value and should be paid by the vendor. 2 - MODELO 211 “RETENCIÓN EN LA ADQUISICIÓN DE BIENES INMUEBLES A NO RESIDENTES” - This is a retention made when a vendor is not a resident in Spain. 3% of the selling price will be retained at the time of completion and duly paid to the Spanish Tax Office to cover

any Capital Gains Tax which may be due. If no profit has been made and the vendor is up to date with his tax obligations he/she can apply for a refund. As you can see the payment and payment deadlines, together with any other problems or complications that may arise during the purchase or sale of a property, require a specific knowledge and so it is recommendable to leave these matters in the hands of an experienced lawyer. José Manuel Garzón, Senior Partner Axarquía Solicitors Axarquía Solicitors is part of Marbella Solicitors Group, a group of lawyers that have more than 20 years experience assisting foreign buyers and vendors in Andalucia, so do not hesitate to contact us to arrange your free, no obligation appointment to discuss the above or any other legal matter. to Spain what came next wouldn't be as hard. They found a location for the shop opposite the primary school in Competa just down form the Hotel Balcon. A good location for passing trade. They sourced Bristish food products such as Cod, Cod Fish cakes, scampi, pies, sausages along with mushy peas, gravy and curry sauce as accompaniments.

TAKEAWAY FISH AND CHIPS – POR FIN! An Interview with Colin & Laura

L

aura and her dad Colin were at home one evening in their house in the village of Competa neither wanting to cook and both wished out loud for a fish and chip takeaway. Then as a joke, one of them said, why don't we open one? Both of them laughed but later they found themselves separately looking at Chip Shop fryers on the Internet! A few days later they admitted to each other they had done some research and that maybe it wasn't so funny after all. So, the quest was on to find a chip shop fryer run with bottled gas for use in Spain. Colin and Laura aren't new to the hospitality business. As a family they moved to Gran Canaria in 1993 and then to Nerja in 2002 where the family run the first British bar on Birianna Beach “The Black Horse”. Laura was brought up, schooled, married in the area and now has 3 children of her own. She speaks fluent

24 The Grapevine

Spanish and although her brother and eldest daughter has since moved back to the UK, she herself loves Spain and her extremely close-knit family life with her dad and two children. After many years of running bars and restaurants Colin decided to semi retire and so was looking for a little more relaxation time! Laura was looking for a more traditionally way of life to bring up her youngest child Tristan so they made the move to Competa. Laura set up Axarquia Homes Estate Agents working from home and fitting around family life and Colin worked as a wine rep in the area. So why rock the boat! The answer simply because it was a good idea and much needed in the area! Once they found the chip shop fryer, next they sought premises. Some may say the wrong way around but the English style chip shop fryer was key in making the business as authentic as possible. If they sourced the correct equipment and shipped it

At the beginning of August Laura and Colin opened Grandads Chippy the very first Fish and chip takeaway in Competa. The whole family came over for the opening Mark, Lauras brother and his son billy and Lauras daughter Cynthia and her partner Ben. They have been really pleased with the business so far both from the foreigners and the locals. Starting with opening evenings only they have now extended to lunch times as the weather has cooled down. Except Sundays they are open 13.00 to 15.00 & 18.30 to 22.00. In the last week they have extended their menu to include Roasted Chicken. Colin has acquired a rotisserie for roasting the chicken on a spit. You can buy a whole or half chicken. As they cook everything to order at the moment ordering in advance is recommended and a necessity for the Roast Chicken. If you order a Chicken by 12.00pm you can pick it up by 2.00pm. All the food is cooked in 100% organic Oil, the chickens are free range and the food is served on recyclable cardboard trays so what´s not to like! Laura and Colin can now have their Fish and Chip takeaway they wished for except they have to cook it first!! See advert opposite.

ourselves stressed to the maximum, we get fed up disheartened disillusioned. We lose our sense of who we are and the once high enthusiasm we had for life is not there so much. That's when depression, anxiety, psychosomatic symptoms, erratic or repetitive behaviour starts. Its when we start to dysfunction and slip into behaviours and habits that may not be of benefit to who we are and where we want to be in life.

CLEAR VISION Pyschotherapy & Coaching

I am not what has happenned to me, i am what i choose to become This is one of my favourite sayings, and something i have reminded myself of when times have gotten tough. Stress, burnout, depression, anger, anxiety, loss, grief, all of these can stem from situations we find ourselves in. Often they are overwhelming and debilitating, causing us to ostracise ourselves from family and friends or life in general. We can become so consumed by what is happening to us that we find it hard to see a way out let alone even look for one. Sounds familiar?

ease of access from wherever you are in the world and however time limited or location restricted you may be. Taking care of your psychological and emotional wellbeing is one of the best investments you can make into yourself. With the experiences that life presented me, and being a trained psychotherapist, I can understand your needs more, tailor the therapy or coaching sessions specifically for you. Bringing together a unique blend of knowledge and approaches together for one aim‌.your wellbeing

Take a first step The first step to feeling well again is often taken when you reach out for help from a therapist. The initial movement to saying: I am not okay and I need some help is often the hardest and yet the most powerful thing we can do for our well-being.

Do you feel you are stuck in your life right now, have you plateaued? Maybe you are so immersed in your work life that you no longer have time for anything else. Perhaps you constantly crack the whip behind yourself and are your own worst critic? Do some of these sound familiar? Then coaching may be something for you.

This is why iIcreated Clearvision, and bought my therapy and coaching into being online for

Towards long lasting changes Most of us at some point in our lives will or already have found

38 The Grapevine

Equally there are those of us who have such huge ambitions and fantastic plans for either ourselves or the world around us and yet we just cant seem to make that leap, we just cant seem to take the right step and often we succeed in making no steps no movement. This is where coaching can be of huge help and if coupled with therapy can produce long lasting and effective changes to your well being and your life. I then decided to take all of this one step further and offer these expperiences face to face here in spain on your own personallised programme. A project i call 'Rehab for life' and it is just that its a residential tailor-made rehabilitation experience for you for your life to last for life. Drawiung together from a wide range of therapeutic practioners based here in the axarquia and nestled deep in the tejada mountains you can enjoy a unique experience of rehabilitation for what ever you a re suffering from and be set back on your true path with a renewed and revitalised energy and mindset. What happens when the Sun does not shine or at night? It will instantaneously switch back to the Grid. What happens if I have a power cut? Then the system shuts down until the Grid comes on again. What happens to the electric I produce from the Sun that I don't use? You can if desired retrofit batteries to store that power if you want to use at night, this is better than being paid for the electricity you produce as you would always pay more when buying electricity than you would get selling it back to the electric company.

SOLAR ELECTRIC OPTIONS Competa Solar Explains

46 The Grapevine

you will want your Solar System to last for many years and produce the most power possible. It is our aim to have happy customers only! Read this and you will change your mind about installing Solar Electric! *Will it save me money and how long will it take to pay for itself? Yes, it will save you money, the standard unit will produce 4.6kw of electricity, with the everincreasing electricity cost to you, in around 4 – 6 years it would have paid for itself, this depends on how much power you normally use and how much the cost of electric keeps increasing. Can I feed the unused electric back into the system (Grid)? No, at the moment you cannot, the Electricity company will not allow it, however if that should change in the future the system can be programmed to feed back to the Grid.

Is this going to cost a great deal of money? It is much more affordable than many people think, the cost will vary a little depending on installation requirements. *How much room do I need and where can they go? They can go in a South, East – West orientation, spit into separate panels on a flat or sloping roof or on the ground, you need space for about 16/18 Solar panels. I have a Three Phase electric system, is that a problem? No, we have both Single and Three Phase units available. How do I know that this equipment will last? The Solar panels we use are made in Spain so designed to run with the heat we have here. The inverter creates the usable electricity are made in Germany or Holland depending on application required. The aquamarine gemstone is said to represent courage, health and confidence. APRIL The diamond, the birthstone of April, is the most coveted gemstone. A diamond is the hardest natural substance and is the only gemstone prized for its complete lack of colour. While the classic white diamond is most often seen, diamonds can be mined in many colours; yellow and brown being the most common. The rarest and most prized coloured diamond is the brilliant blue diamond. The April birthstone, the diamond, due to its brilliance and fire has become the symbol of love.

Emerald, the May birthstone, is a rich green colour that is reminiscent of mother nature and springtime. The most valued Emeralds are mined in Colombia and there deep green colour that reflects the jungles in which they are found. Emeralds have become a symbol of rebirth and love. JUNE The two birthstones of June are Pearl and Alexandrite. The Alexandrite, a spectacular and cherished gemstone, is known as the colour change gem as it changes colour based on the lighting. Pearls are extremely popular due to its elegant natural beauty. Pearls are formed when an irritant, such as a piece of sand, enters an oyster. The oyster coats the piece of sand over and over to form a pearl and give the pearl its iridescence shimmer.

AUGUST Peridot, the birthstone of August, is a dazzling lime green colour. The peridot is one of only a few gemstones that exists in only one to bring prosperity, fertility and healing. means it can be found in every colour. The Sapphire has come to represent loyalty and trust. OCTOBER Tourmaline and Opal are the two birthstones of October. Tourmaline is available in a rainbow of beautiful colours but most often comes in a pretty pink. Opal gemstones are truly unique because each opal sparkles with a one of a kind colour combination. Each opal gem is individual and unique like no other. NOVEMBER November is assigned two unique birthstones, Citrine and Yellow Topaz. Citrine is from the French word citron meaning lemon, named appropriately for its brilliant yellow colour. The Citrine is believed to be a healing gemstone and was once believed to be a gift from the sun. November’s alternative

birthstone, Topaz, is most desired in its orange Imperial Topaz colour. However, topaz is mined in a variety of rich colours like blue, pink, and yellow.

DECEMBER December has claim to three birthstones, Zircon, Tanzanite and Turquoise. All three of these precious gemstones shine in different shades of brilliant blues. Their blue tones make these gems the perfect birthstones for the cold wintry month of December. Feria de Fuengirola

THINGS TO DO IN OCTOBER Something for Everyone This Month!

Celebrate Jazz, Wine & More in Catalonia In Barcelona, you can hear worldclass jazz at the famous Barcelona Jazz Festival late the month (October 19–31, 2019). At more than a dozen venues around the city, jazz lovers can enjoy concerts featuring bigname jazz musicians as well and up-and-coming artists. There's a lot going on throughout the rest of Catalonia, too. Check out the Cavatast Cava (sparkling wine) Festival (October 4–6, 2019) in Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, and local celebrations in Girona for Fires de Sant Narcis (October 29–November 3, 2019). Party Like a Local in Marbella To take advantage of the last few days of really warm weather, many towns on the Costa del Sol hold their local feria, or fair, in October. You'll find festivals in Nerja, Fuengirola, Cádiar (including a wine fountain providing free wine), and San Pedro de Alcántara near Puerto Banus. Follow the Music in Seville The Seville Guitar Festival is the main attraction in Seville in October. At this event, you'll be able to listen to world-class

guitarists and an even experience an exciting flamenco guitar competition. 2019 dates: September 27–October 5 Stomp Grapes in the Vineyards Grape stomping, formerly an integral part of traditional wine production, still takes place in some parts of Spain. For example, you can take a day trip from Barcelona that combines the traditional wine tour and tastings plus the incredible opportunity to stomp the grapes with your feet. Afterward, have a picnic lunch overlooking the vineyard or lunch at a traditional Catalan restaurant. Celebrate Architecture in Madrid The Semana de la Arquitectura, or Architecture Week combines a trade fair, exhibits, children's workshops, and public events in Madrid's most famous buildings. You can visit dozens of architecturally and historically significant buildings. Fun and educational children's activities are also part of the week. 2019 dates: September 30–October 7

Experience Local Traditions in Spain Spain follows age-old Catholic traditions honoring each town's patron saints. The majority of these special Saints' Days feature offerings and shows of respect to the images of the saints, as well as parades and processions where statues are carried through the streets. Fiestas del Pilar (October 5–13, 2019): The city of Zaragoza in Aragón honors the city's patron saint, Our Lady of the Pillar, at this annual festival. The week long event features shows, contests, and parades. Highlights include the offering of flowers and fruits to the Virgin Mary and the glass rosary parade featuring floats made entirely of glass. Feria de Fuengirola (October 6–12, 2019): Also called Feria del Rosario, this celebration in Fuengirola is held in honor of Spain's national holiday (October 12) at the fairground. Locals bring their horses and carriages and wear their finest traditional garb: flamenco dresses for women and suits for men. The fair includes rides, live music, flamenco dancing, and fair foods.

Dance the Sardana in Girona

Feria de Nerja (October 9–13, 2019): Nerja hosts this weeklong celebration honoring its patron saints, the Virgin of Anguish and St. Michael the Archangel. Festivities take over much of the town but focus mainly on the east and west sides of the town center. This familyfriendly festival features music, horses, parades, concerts, fair rides, dancing, and children's activities. Fiestas de San Lucas (October 12–20, 2019): In Jaén, known as the world's olive oil capital, the city honors St. Luke, its patron saint, every October. For more than a week, fairgoers can experience concerts, dancing, local foods, and cultural and sporting events. Romería de Valme (October 20, 2019): In Dos Hermanas, near Seville, locals celebrate the Romería de Valme religious pilgrimage on the third Sunday of October every year. The colorful processions honor Our Lady of Valme, and statues of her are paraded through the streets.

The run will take you through the magical streets of Bilbao at night. If you're more of a casual runner, there's also a non-competitive charity 5K. The fun continues into the night with fireworks, music, and performances. 2019 date: Saturday, October 19 Dance the Sardana in Girona The Fires de Sant Narcis in Girona, Catalonia takes place in the beautiful La Devesa park. You'll find hundreds of locals doing the sardana (a traditional Catalan dance) as well as enjoying live music and giant papier mâché figures and heads. As if that weren't enough, you'll also find arts and crafts vendors, film, theater, sports competitions, roast chestnut feasts, and children's shows. 2019 dates: October 29–November 3

Get Scared in San Sebastian While the city's most iconic film festival takes place in September, San Sebastian keeps the cinematic fun going all autumn long. The Horror and Fantasy Film Festival is an intriguing combination of horror and sci-fi. Established in 1990, this annual film festival features full-length films and shorts from around the world. Genres include horror, fantasy, sci-fi, animation, and classics. The festival also has street shows, music, exhibitions, and comedy. 2019 dates: October 26–November 1 The International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival also comes to Spain in October. Scatter over the clams, cover with the lid and steam for 2-4 mins, shaking the pan occasionally until the clams are open. Have a little taste before seasoning, as the clams can be quite salty. Then scatter over the chopped parsley. Eat with lots of crusty bread.

TALKING TREES! Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh of Viveros Florena, Cรณmpeta

Everyone is talking trees these days, thankfully, and massive tree planting projects are in place all over the world. The circle is coming round and we are, belatedly, realising how important trees are to us all.

84 The Grapevine

Trees combat climate change by absorbing CO2, removing and storing the carbon and releasing oxygen back into the air. But you need a lot of them; one hectare of mature trees, in one year, absorbs the amount of CO2 produced by one car driving

80,000 kilometres. That same hectare will release enough oxygen for thirty six people to live for one year. Trees cool our streets and hard landscape by up to 12C; placed strategically around a house they

can cut air-conditioning needs in half. Trees help prevent soil erosion and save water by providing shade to smaller plants. Trees reduce runoff by breaking the force of rain and allowing the water to run down their trunks and drip off leaves, thus enabling easier absorption by the soil and preventing stormwater from carrying pollution to our oceans. Trees provide food, medicines, building materials as well as shelter for many creatures. Trees mark the seasons and are our friends; for hugging, for climbing, for tree-houses and for solace to the soul. Trees heal and reduce violence. It has been proven that neighbourhoods with trees have a reduced incidence of violence and hospital patients with a window with a green view heal quicker. Trees are tough but they need a helping hand from us now. We can nearly all plant a tree or more! But whilst tree planting schemes are fine we need to be careful what we plant. It's essential we get away from monocultures and search out autochthonous plants. In Andalucía these will often be evergreen and have small, leathery leaves to survive tough conditions. Trees such as holm oak, quercus rotundifolia (encina), cork oak, quercus suber (alcornoque), gall oak, quercus faginea (quejigo), wild olive, olivo europaea var. sylvestris (acebuche), carob, ceratonia siliqua (algarrobo), European yew, taxus baccata (tejo) and the native Spanish fir, abies pinsapo (pinsapo). Under their canopy aromatic plants will proliferate – toughies like lavender, rosemary, sage and thyme and shrubs/small shrubby trees such as rock rose, cistus (jara), strawberry tree, arbutus unedo (madroño), mastic, pistacia lentiscus (lentisco) and juniper, juniperus communis

To advertise call 637 028 873

(enebro). Fire is, and always has been, a threat but many of these natives have evolved special fire-fighting mechanisms. The rugged thick bark on cork oak resists fire; holm oak and wild olive have a remarkable ability to re-shoot and the rock roses actually germinate better at the extremely high temperatures generated by fires. Pines that are native to the Mediterranean area include the maritime pine, pinus pinaster (pino marítimo), Aleppo pine, pinus halepensis (pinus carrasco) and stone/umbrella pine, pinus pinea (pinus piñonero). They all present a higher fire risk and are not so animal friendly. Rewilding a patch with these natives is what we should all be trying to do; toughness itself; the only downside is that they are almost all slow growing. Plant them for the benefit of your children and grandchildren (we have destroyed such a large part of their heritage) but it's also good to see some trees that we plant mature in our lifetime too. This is where nonnative introductions come in some are so much a part of our landscape that we forget they're not native. Biodiversity is important and, personally, I don´t think we need to exclude all foreigners! In my reforestation scheme I would make room for some nonnatives choosing those that are Mediterranean climate type, therefore needing water to establish, thereafter none and are quicker growing for some instant effect. Remember that they often serve the same environmental purposes. Some will disagree with me, I know, and it is important not to allow invasive introductions to smother our natives. Hence I would not have eucalyptus – common as they are; they impoverish the soil and most

wildlife does not like them. The acacia (mimosa) family are more useful but use them sparingly and control them. I would use tamarix, myrtus communis, dodonea viscosa, duranta repens, leucophyllum, various salvias, vitex trifolia purpurea and schinus molle (in moderation), viburnum tinus, prunus spinosa and eleagnus for their berries. Whilst mentioning fruits, we could also usefully include some in our back to nature forest; these are not strictly autochthonous but they do have a long and illustrious history in Andalucía. So, throw in fig, mulberry, quince and almond – all are quick and fruitful. Chestnut is majestic in mountainous cooler regions and hazelnut is useful. I'm also a fan of jujube, ziziphus jujuba (azafaifo). All are natural looking, blending well and good wildlife plantings. If you are planning a rewilding on your land and need a quantity of plants without spending a fortune, we can get many of these plants in plug form – come and talk to us.
