A couple of months ago we featured an article on La Conception Botanical gardens in Malaga. My family and I had never been, so on a cooler day last month we decided to visit. The gardens open at 9.30am in the morning and close at 4.30pm in the months of October through to March and 7.30pm in all other months of the year. The entrance fee is 5.20e with discounts available for groups, children, retired and the disabled. Just inside the entrance is a lovely coffee shop serving fabulous cake which enticed us to stop here prior to even starting the visit! The gardens have been open to the public since 1994 and are a pleasure to wander round. There are waterfalls, a pond, a lake and various plants and trees of interests. It was a lovely morning out which I would recommend. If you are looking for things to do this month don't forget the 4th Art Route of Frigiliana 2nd to 4th October from 11:00am to 2:00pm and from 4:00pm. to 8:00 pm Spain is a great place to live with a fabulous climate and plenty of things to see and do, this is highlighted throughout the magazine. NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update

T

he Covid-19 pandemic has dashed the dreams of completing Barcelona’s famous Sagrada Familia basilica by 2026, to coincide with the centenary of the death of its architect, Antoni Gaudí. Although construction officials had long promised that the iconic temple would be finished by that date, plans have been set back by a lack of visitors, particularly foreign ones, who represent 94% of the total. Entrance fees and private donations finance the temple’s construction, and based on last year’s visitor figures of 4.5 million, the revenue forecast for this year was in the range of €103 million, of which €55 million was going to be used to build several large spires still missing from the top of the building. But following months of coronavirus-related restrictions and a sharp drop in tourism, the 2020 budget has been scaled down to €17 million. “Unless there is a miracle, work will not be completed by 2026 as previously expected,” said Esteve Camps, executive chairman of the foundation Junta Constructora del Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, which is in charge of

preserving and completing the landmark building.

nimal charities in southern Spain were urgently seeking homes for 110 cats after they and their owner were evicted from a flat in the Valencia region. Spama Safor, an animal shelter in the south-eastern seaside town of Gandia, had initially thought there were only 96 cats in the flat. But by Saturday evening, the charity said it had removed a total of 110 cats and urgently needed help to shelter them “at least until they are vaccinated or sterilised”. The cats had been left homeless after they and their owner were evicted from an apartment in the town measuring 100 sq metres (1,000 sq ft), they said. “Apparently the owner took in a pair of cats three years ago and they have been procreating ever since,” Salvadora Tormas, who works with the shelter, told AFP. The charity said it did not have enough space to take them all in as it was already housing about 200 cats.

Spanish athlete is being applauded on social media after he sacrificed a top tier win in the 2020 Santander Triathlon to give it to a competitor who took a wrong turn on the course. British athlete James Teagle was on course to win third place in the competition in Spain last weekend when he made a mistake metres from the finish. Diego Méntrida overtook him but noticed the error and stopped to allow Teagle to cross first. "He deserved it," Méntrida said later. The race took place on 13 September but footage from the race spread on social media as many congratulated 21-year-old Méntrida for his show of sportsmanship.

T

he boards of Spain’s CaixaBank and Bankia have approved a merger plan between the two, which will create Spain’s largest financial institution. The new bank will keep the CaixaBank brand, and will have assets of more than 664 billion euros, the companies said, surpassing Spain’s Santander and BBVA banks. In a joint statement issued the banks said that both entities had approved the operation, ‘to be executed as a merger by absorption of Bankia by CaixaBank, which must be approved at the General Shareholders’ Meetings’.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS The Importance Of The Tax Form 210 (Annual Deem Income Tax) For Non-Resident Property Owners

I

n last weeks the Spanish Inland Revenue (Agencia Tributaria) has been carrying out a new campaign to look for and identify those NONRESIDENTS who own real estate properties in Spain but have not submitted the Tax returns. The Tax Returns that all NonResident Property owners should be submitting annually is called, Modelo 210, and the period for submitting this declaration is the calendar year, (i.e. 1st January to 31st December each year). The Annual Deem Income Tax due for the tax year 2019, must be paid before the 31st December 2020. The Tax Office is sending amicable letters to those Non-resident property owners who, to date, have failed to present and pay this tax. This communication enables those who have never presented the “Modelo 210, to be able to

rectify the situation voluntarily, without paying any fines or interest. Many NON-RESIDENT PROPERTY OWNERS have not paid these annual taxes, not because they wish to commit tax fraud, but due to mere ignorance of the existence of this tax. Usually because nobody has ever informed them. Everyone should be aware that ignorance of the Law is not an excuse for not paying this tax, so we recommend any NONRESIDENT who owns a real estate property in Spain seeks tax advice to make sure they know what their tax obligations in Spain are. The tax form 210 is operated on a selfassessed system. This means that Non-residents have the obligation to prepare, calculate and pay their own Deem Income Tax every year.

computers can easily check who is not paying these taxes, so it is important to ensure that the annual tax form 210 is paid and submitted on time every year. As this is not an easy process, we recommend that non-resident property owners should get professional assistance to prepare these annual taxes. If you are a NON-RESIDENT PROPERTY OWNER IN SPAIN, you still have plenty of time to comply with this Tax law. It's better to do it before the Inland Revenue contacts you. Jose M. Garzon Solicitor Head of Axarquia & Nerja offices. mail@axarquiasolicitors.com

WORLD HERITAGE SITES Andalucia Hosts Seven World Heritage Sites

A

ccording to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee Spain has 45 sites in total occupying the second position next to Italy. And right to say Andalusia hosts 7 World Heritage sites inscribed on the list. Most of the cultural sites are located in cities that used to be the three great Muslim centres of power: Granada, Seville and Cordoba. The Historic Centre of Cordoba. The whole history of prosperous and lavish life of Moors in Iberian Peninsula starts in the city of Cordoba. It’s period of greatest glory began with the establishment of Cordoba Caliphate in the 8th century after the Moorish conquest, when some 300 mosques and innumerable palaces and public buildings were built to rival the splendours of Constantinople, Damascus and Baghdad. Due to that rivalry with the great capitals of oriental world we have a unique opportunity to enjoy today

16 The Grapevine

Cordoba’s historic center encompassing 80.28 ha, which is the most extensive historical heritage site in the world declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984. 2. Alhambra, Generalife and Albayzín After the fall of Córdoba Caliphate a new prosperous Muslim Kingdom of Granada appeared in the 13th century. It was the last Moorish stronghold in Europe, the Alhambra reflects the splendour of Moorish civilisation in Andalusia and offers the best samples of ornamental architecture, spectacular and lush gardens, cascading and dripping water features, and breathtaking views of the city. According to the Koran, the holy book of Islam, it continually repeats the idea that heaven is a garden with running water. From this perspective we could say that the Alhambra is an Arabic attempt to create heaven on earth. And doubtlessly the Alhambra is Granada’s love letter to Moorish culture and a great lesson in medieval architecture.

Originally The Alhambra was a palace, citadel, fortress, and the home of the Nasrid sultans, high government officials, servants of the court and elite soldiers from the 13th to the 14th century. Other notable buildings belonging to a different time period are also located within the Alhambra complex, most notably the Renaissance style Palace of Charles V. Believe it or not but there were dark times in the history of this jewel. During the Napoleonic occupation, the Alhambra was used as a barracks and a huge part of the monument was damaged or destroyed. What we admire today has been respectfully restored and we have to be thankful to an American writer Washington Irving who has evoked a public´s interest to this historic monument by his book Tales of Alhambra. Today the Alhambra is the most visited monument in Spain and the Nasrid Palaces are the Alhambra’s

true gem, annual number of visitors reaches up to 7 million. We may definitely say that it is the most brilliant Islamic building in Europe, with its perfectly proportioned rooms and courtyards, intricately moulded stucco walls, beautiful tiling, fine carved wooden ceilings and elaborate stalactite-like muqarnas vaulting, all worked in mesmerising, symbolic, geometrical patterns. The Albaycín district is situated on a hill above the center of Granada and across from the Alhambra. It was an ancient Muslim neighbourhood which is very popular with visitors today – and rightly so. Today part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, since 1984, Albayzín dates back to the 14th century and was built as a defensive town and thrived as one of the centres of Granada under Muslim rule. Among its narrow, winding streets one will find beautiful white-washed old buildings, splendid Arabic shops and restaurants, scenic gardens, and marvellous views of Granada and the Alhambra. 3. Cathedral, Alcázar and Archivo de Indias in Seville The pace of history and culture on Iberian Peninsular forms a stunning Golden Triangle of Moorish Empire presented by the Alhambra of Granada, the Mezquita of Cordoba and the Royal Alcazars of Sevilla, these UNESCO listed sites constantly remind us of the 3 cultures which have lived here (Arab, Christian and Jewish) and which together have created the unique character of the Andalusians. The Old Town of Seville, the third largest in Europe with an area of 4 square kilometres, it contains three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, listed in 1987: the Alcázar palace complex, the Cathedral and the General Archive of the Indies. They perfectly epitomise the Spanish “Golden Age”, incorporating vestiges of Islamic culture, centuries of ecclesiastical power, royal sovereignty and the trading power that Spain acquired

through its colonies in the New World. 4. Dólmenes de Antequera Located at the heart of Andalusia in Antequera town, the site comprises three megalithic monuments: the Menga and Viera dolmens and the Tholos of El Romeral, and two natural monuments: La Peña de los Enamorados and El Torcal mountainous formations, which are landmarks within the property. Built during the Neolithic and Bronze Age out of large stone blocks, these monuments form chambers with lintelled roofs or false cupolas. These three tombs, buried beneath their original earth tumuli, are one of the most remarkable architectural works of European prehistory and one of the most important examples of European Megalithism. 5. Doñana National Park Doñana National Park in the province of Cadiz occupies the right bank of the Guadalquivir river at its estuary on the Atlantic Ocean. It is notable for the great diversity of its biotopes, especially lagoons, marshlands, fixed and mobile dunes, scrub woodland and maquis. It is home to five threatened bird species. It is one of the largest heronries in the Mediterranean region and is the wintering site for more than 500,000 water fowl each year. 6. The Renaissance Monumental Ensembles of Úbeda and Baeza The urban morphology of the two small cities of Úbeda and Baeza in southern Spain dates back to the Moorish 9th century and to the Reconquista in the 13th century. An important development took place in the 16th century, when the cities were subject to renovation along the lines of the emerging Renaissance. This planning intervention was part of the introduction into Spain of new humanistic ideas from Italy, which went on to have a great influence on the architecture of

Latin America. The central areas of Úbeda and Baeza constitute outstanding early examples of Renaissance civic architecture and urban planning in Spain in the early 16th century. 7. Cave art in Almeria, Granada and Jaen The Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula is the largest group of rock-art sites anywhere in Europe, and provides an exceptional picture of human life in a critical phase of human development, which is vividly and graphically depicted in paintings that are unique in style and subject matter. Prehistoric Levantine rock art sites are found in the coastal and inland mountain ranges of the Mediterranean Basin of the Iberian Peninsula over 1,000 kilometres of coast, from Catalonia to Andalusia. The property includes 758 sites distributed across six Autonomous Communities, in Andalusia 68 separate cave paintings are to be found in Velez-Blanco and Maria in Almeria; Almaciles and Huescar in Granada; Quesada, Pontones and Santiago de la Espada in Jaen. The cave art constitutes an exceptional historical document due to its broad range and provides rare artistic and documentary evidence of the socio-economic realities of prehistory. It is exclusive to the Mediterranean basin of the Iberian Peninsula due to the complexity of the cultural processes in this region in later prehistory and factors related to conservation processes, such as the nature of the rock and specific environmental conditions as well as the range of subjects depicted and techniques employed. With this we have covered the main monuments listed by UNESCO but there are still a plenty of miracles to see in Andalusia.

ART ROOM Mitch and Chris France Open Their Gallery Up To The Public

T

his month I met with Mitch France a wellknown local artist and musician. He and his wife Chris, who is an artist in ceramics, moved to the village of Canillas de Albaida in 2003. They bought a plot of land in the countryside to build a villa on and also a townhouse in the village, which they lived in and renovated at the same time. The town house provided Mitch with one of his first local paintographs. The house had no electricity and was lit only by candles. In one particular room there was a window with a beautiful old wooden frame with no glass which overlooked Calle Granada. Mitch took a photograph of this and captured the light, mood and setting perfectly. He then later swapped

the view of the street with a much more interesting photo he had taken of a scene in Malaga. These two photos along with some digital changes on the computer created a superb end result and the picture is now hanging in his gallery for you to view and enjoy. Mitch and Chris both come from an artistic background, they attended and met at Salford Art college. Mitch studied Graphics and Chris fashion and later they together formed their own graphic design company called Art Room Design Ltd, which they ran until they moved to Spain. Keeping with tradition they have named their new art and ceramics galley Art Room too. Over the years Mitch has displayed his paintography work locally in places such as Todo Papel and

the Boutique in Competa. Paintography he describes simply as photographs manipulated on the computer to give them the appearance of a painting. His Paintography work has proved extremely popular locally, you can see an example “Dancer in a White Dress on the cover of this magazine, which was taken at Canillas Flamenco Festival a few years ago. Three years ago Mitch felt the need to start actually painting rather than making his photos look like paintings! He took an online course and has not stopped painting since. It also turns out that Mitch is rather good at it! Many of his paintings are produced from copying a photograph he has taken and then manipulated on the computer. He will print this photo

www.artroom-gallery.com and paint a reproduction of it in acrylics, other paintings are from memory. Meanwhile his wife Chris joined a ceramics class which she describes on their website, www.artroom-gallery.com, as “a revelation, a legitimate, grown up version of mud pies and sandcastles! I loved it. There are moments of frustration when glazes don't work out and things go pear shaped in the kiln, but overall, it is very satisfying. We bounce ideas off each other whilst keeping our own individual style in the group....and share a lot of laughs.”

possible by the huge light and airy space underneath their swimming pool perfect for a studio and gallery. Mitch invited me to his house to take a look.

The directions to his home are on his website in many formats so it makes his villa easy to find along with a couple of small ´Art Room´ signs as you approach the villa. Mitch greeted me and invited me into his gallery which was a lovely space. All his paintings were hung & lit professionally along with a table showcasing Chris´s ceramics. The themes of Mitch´s painting are Spanish dancers and scenes, Moroccan people and scenes and Cuban musicians. I Over the years both of them have was astounded by the quality of the faces of people he´d painted built up a wonderful collection of and how lifelike they were. especially in the hands of the people, which I understand to be quite a skill, was an art in themselves. Mitch chatted to me about his work and where he got inspiration from, it was a truly enjoyable and interesting couple of hours. Mitch and Chris are opening the gallery up to the public as they want their art viewed and enjoyed. They would love you to visit the gallery and enjoy the space they have created and the art they have both produced.

BYRON BAY, GOLD COAST Josephines Fourth Journey

F

ollowing on from Surf Camp, it was goodbye to the Sunshine Coast and hello Gold Coast! I caught the bus from the Pagoda cross roads, early and three hours later was in Byron Bay. It was easy finding my ‘Nomads’ Hostel, which was about 5 minutes from the Coach station, a bench with a canopy! The Hostel was fairly new, very large with several floors and they explained there was no women only Dormitories, but as it was only one night, I was OK with that, I was getting very blasé about my sleeping arrangements by now and collected my spotless white bedding from reception and paid a small deposit, including towel. The kitchen when I discovered it was spotless, with notices around advising you to keep the kitchen clean, because the security cameras would take a photo and send it to your Mother! The toilet and shower facilities were also

34 The Grapevine

spotless, and outside there was a spacious eating area. This is better than Sydney I thought, especially as there was a bath towel provided. (I had to buy one for $5 in a Chinese in Sydney). I walked up two flights of stairs to my mixed Dormitory and discovered a lot of the bunks were occupied by the inhabitants sleeping off the night before, others had clothes on them, and the only vacant one I could see was on the top by the door, I had drawn the short straw again. I was on an early start the following day, so unpacking quickly and quietly what I needed, I locked the rest up in the provided lockers, and unlike Sydney, I could bring my backpack into the Dorm, I then headed out to see what Byron Bay was about. It had been a surfer’s hippy paradise years ago, when my son was on his travels, in 1991, and indeed there were still a lot of thin brown wrinkled hippies in Camper

vans to be seen. (Probably the same ones!) The town was designed to a similar layout of an English village with a square, home to the Coach and Bus station, Post Office, Hospital and Police station and a few dusty trees, then leading off was ‘Main Street’ heading to’ Main Beach’! The names of things in OZ amused me, Off Licences, were called the ‘Bottle Shops’, and the vast Salvation Army second hand shops called Op Shops! (Opportunity, I guess). This street was full of small clothes shops, craft shops, cafes and other paraphernalia needed for a holiday and as I hadn’t eaten breakfast, I looked for a cheap eating place. I saw a Subway, which I had heard of but never ventured into, and when I did, I was surprised how cheap and good the food was. (After that experience I used them whenever I found one.) The holiday makers or day visitors looked quite well dressed and I

felt scruffy, so I decided to get a pair of shorts and two tee shirts in a sale, and ditched the old ones. immediately feeling better, I joined the crowds walking to the huge beaches.

So back down to the beach at 5pm to take photos, and to sit on the much cooler sand. There was plenty to see, lots of joggers, swimmers and surfers in the cool evening. I can now say I have been on Byron Beach and paddled!

and on until the early hours, and I admit I was blushing in the dark, that’s all I can say!

I eventually got to sleep as dawn was breaking and slept in, so I jumped from the bunk, dragging my bedding, and backpack to the There are more than one, but bathroom, making as much noise ‘Main Beach’ was golden sand as I had got a pot noodle earlier for as I could, raced down the stairs, far as the eye could see, with trees along the edge, grass sitting my evening meal and went back collected my deposit, and caught to boil a kettle and met a lovely the bus, just! I already had food areas and camping spots. The English girl who was working her and water, and breakfast biscuits beach is not only long, but deep way round OZ, so we sat together in my pack, being a Mum I am and as I walked over some of it, under the trees at a long trestle always organised on the food my feet started to burn through front! I planned on getting a my Crocs, so I sat in the shade of table and shared a jug of beer with some young men from sandwich on one of the stops on the grass and trees and tried to the way to Hervey Bay and take photos of the surfers. It was Brisbane, high fives all round for me and plenty of jokes. It was a maybe a woman-only Dormitory! then I discovered my digital My next few days were to be camera had kicked the bucket! I lovely friendly evening, but I spent on Fraser Island, the went back to the town and found wanted an early night before the early start of the next day’s bus largest sand island in the world a very expensive camera shop, ride. To a ‘Beaches’ Hostel, and I was looking forward to that they looked at my cheapy point (considered the best) I was the experience, because my son had and click and suggested I go to been and others had the Post Office and get one there, only person in the Dorm and got to sleep quickly. Then: recommended it. And it didn’t and ask for one compatible with disappoint! my card! (The Post Office?) I was woken by the door opening They had an array of cameras and found me one, and fitted my and shutting loudly, lights on and off, then giggles. IT´S MANGO TIME!

They Taste Great And Are Good For You.

I

n Axarquia, in our almost tropical climate, the mango trees that once only graced local gardens have successfully transmuted into cultivars grown in open-air plantations. Spanish mangoes are the only ones in the world that reach the marketplace clad in their own waxen coat and therefore not washed or treated with edible varnishes or fungicides.

Mangos don't get sweeter than this! Harvest time: September and October. Spanish mangoes are discernibly different from others in flavor and aroma because they are harvested almost as soon as they ripen on the plant: as a result, they contain a higher percentage of sugar than any others in the European marketplace. They can reach 20 degrees Brix, compared with the 12 or 14 degrees found in fruits coming into Europe from other sources and harvested

46 The Grapevine

before they are ripe. The varieties most commonly grown around here are Osteen, Kent and Keitt, known for their melt-in-the-mouth flesh, citrus aromas and outstanding sweetness. These mangoes’ reddish-purple skins gleam in the sun from first thing in the morning during the harvest months of September and Oct

The diuretic effect of mangos comes from its potassium content which is ideal for eliminating liquids and avoiding demineralization. Furthermore, their high level of dietary fibre produces a light laxative effect and is ideal for diets due to their satisfying nature, as well as being rich in nutrients and low in fat.

The Nutritional Benefits of Mango Mangos, apart from their fabulous flavour, boast enormous health benefits thanks to their antioxidant, laxative and diuretic properties as well as being a large source of nutrients and vitamins, especially Vitamin C.

Mangos also contain a high quantity of water (the main component of our bodies and essential for good hydration), carbohydrates and other minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and sodium. Mangos are an enormous source of betacarotene which is recommended for avoiding diseases related to skin and sight and it is ideal for those who suffer from anemia or who need special doses of vitamins.

High levels of Vitamin C make mangos an ideal fruit for those who do not tolerate other sources of Vitamin C well, such as oranges or lemons, which is vital for the formation of a good immune system, for absorbing iron and ideal for smokers.

As all fruit, mangos are rich in carbohydrates while being low in calories (65 calories per 100 grams). Amongst the vitamins

To advertise call 637 028 873

they provide, we can highlight Vitamin A (one mango provides approximately 30% of the recommended intake of this vitamin), Vitamin C (an exceptional source which provides more Vitamin C than an orange), Vitamin E (a piece of 200 grams of mango provides 23% of the daily recommended intake) as well as vitamins from Group B (Riboflavin, Thiamine, etc).

Mangos contain more than 20 different vitamins and minerals. Thanks to their high level of Vitamin A and C, they are especially recommended for those who suffer from a vitamin deficiency: those who do not tolerate citric fruits well, peppers or other vegetables (which are key sources of Vitamin C), those who follow a low fat diet (diets which are low in Vitamin A) or for those with high nutritional necessities (periods of growth, Mangos are a sweet and intense physical activity, refreshing fruit that is easy to eat pregnancy, breastfeeding or the and rich in antioxidants, as well elderly) including those who as having multiple other suffer from stress or nutritional benefits, which makes immunodeficiency. There are also them suitable for everyone factors like smoking, alcohol including children and abuse, the taking of certain adolescents, adults, athletes, medication that lowers the pregnant women, nursing benefits and absorption of mothers and the elderly. nutrients, creating a necessity for an extra dose of nutrients and With low fat, high fibre diets, fruits vitamins such as those available in mangos. and vegetables with high fibre content are known to reduce the risk of some types of cancers.

Vitamins A and C as antioxidants help to prevent and reduce the risk of multiple diseases including cardiovascular and degenerative diseases and even cancer. As Vitamin C helps the absorption of iron in foods, it is highly recommended to accompany food high in iron or iron supplements as it accelerates and improves the absorption, making it excellent for those with iron-deficiency anemia. The high content of fibre in mangos produces good laxative properties. Fibre improves digestion and helps reduce blood cholesterol levels, control blood sugar levels and it has a satiating effect which is highly beneficial for those with diabetes or those overweight (when consumed in appropriate quantities).

sellers have their own 'bottom line' below which they are often unable to go. It is vital to have somebody that you can trust on the ground with knowledge of the local property market in order to help you to secure the best possible deal. That's where we come in - we are here to help both buyers and sellers through the whole process and to achieve an agreement where both parties are happy.

SUNSET PROPERTIES SPAIN Buying and Selling

A

t Sunset Properties Spain we offer a friendly, reliable and professional service. We take a proactive approach towards promoting all of our properties for sale and guide our clients through the buying and selling processes from beginning to end. With over 19 years' experience in real estate within the Axarquia area we have a wealth of experience to pass on to both buyers and sellers. If you are a selling your property… If you are considering selling your property please contact us and we'll guide you every step of the way. We'll be realistic about the market value and we will prepare a comprehensive description of your property, including internal room measurements, many high quality photographs and a video. We are happy to offer our opinion on the value of the property using recent sales figures as a basis for our valuation. We advise sellers to build some space into the sales price to account for buyers making an offer. Also we ensure that sellers fully understand their selling costs. This is vital so sellers know the final amount that they will receive after everything has been paid.

Home owners are often surprised when their documentation is not entirely correct. Even if they used the services of a lawyer when they bought the house, there can still be issues which need to be addressed in relation to the escritura or boundaries. We will check all of your documents and advise you what, if anything, needs to be done. The sale of a property with the right documentation is much less likely to be delayed or to fail than one where there are unresolved issues. Don't forget if you are selling a rural property in either Canillas de Albaida or Competa and you have a town water supply you are now required to do the DAFO (AFO) certificate to sell the property. If you are buying a property… At Sunset Properties Spain our company ethos is all about customer service and we aim to make both buying and selling as stress free as possible for all our clients. We never pressurise anyone into buying and we never abandon anyone – once a client always a client, even after the sale is completed. The good news for buyers is that in today's market most sellers are prepared to consider a reasonable offer for their property. However,

Once you have completed the purchase of your home in the sun, we will be delighted to offer you our free comprehensive after sales service. We assure you that we will always be here to help you with whatever queries or problems you might have. The current property market… We are all aware of the changes that Covid-19 has made to all of our lives. In the real estate sector we are doing our best to weather the storm. We have added safely guidelines when we list houses for sale and when we view them with clients. The market is surprisingly buoyant. Many clients are not able to visit to view properties due to travel restrictions, so we are offering remote live viewings to all of our clients. This approach is proving to be successful with a number of houses being sold this way. Contact us We work with buyers and sellers across the whole of the Axarquia area, so if you would like to buy or sell a property give us a call at our office on +34 601 626 525 or call Denise on +34 618 295 063 or email info@sunsetpropertiesspain.com or drop into our office on Avenida Andalucia 65c Torre del Mar, Malaga. SAYALONGA A White village with History And With The Only Round Cemetry

f you have not visited Sayalonga's round cemetery you should as it is an architectural treasure and attracts a great number of visitors.

I

reasons. One thing that is certain is that it is an anonymous piece of work, which has influenced the environment into which it blends and whose surroundings imitate the spontaneity of its form.

The cemetery is a monument which is compact in size, however, that is not to say that a short look or visit is enough. If you look closer it is possible to see how the construction of the niches gives them the look of a white honeycomb, and in each one a new surprise. So, it is not just a cemetery it is also an example of popular architecture of the time.

This is possibly the only round cemetery in Spain. Its probably one of the most visited architectural monuments in the Axarquía with more than 3.000 people visiting a year.

Constructed in the 19th century, its round form remained a closely kept secret for some time, perhaps because at first sight, of its resemblance to the tower of a church, or maybe for other

History of Sayalonga From an historic point of view, the origins of this village are a little unclear, although most experts agree that the Arabs were the architects, as no remains of any settlements have been found that outdate the Arab remains. What seems to be more clear is the Latin origin of its name: Saya-Longa, which means “long tunic”.

To the west of the village is the hill known as, Rábita de Sayalonga and nearby the settlement named, Batahis (Batarxis), which is nowadys uninhabited. The Rábita was a sanctuary or convent of “warrior monks” that was probably introduced by the Arabs from the 11th century on in order to defend the region. The settlement of Batahis dates back to the beginning of the 14th century according to the poet Alî Ibn Ahmd Ibn Muhammad Al-Hasnî, who was famous for his stories about the Holy City of the Mecca and about the two Arabic governors that ruled in Malaga. It seems that this poet may even have been born there. When the Catholic Kings finally captured Vêlez-Málaga, the surrender of Sayalonga happened in very much the same way as the rest of the villages in the area. Not

long after, the village was officially left to one side as far as the authorities were concerned, which caused the inhabitants to join in the Moorish uprising, and to be expelled along with them by the Christian troops. The battle of Frigiliana, in 1569, seems to have been the defining date for the defeat of their neighbouring village. The Lomo de Matormoros, which is located in the Camino de la Rábita, dates from this period as do the tombs of the Moors that have been found in the surrounding area Felipe 2nd decreed a royal order in 1571 to confiscate all the Morîs belongings and properties and fro the¡m to be handed over to the older Christians who had come from different parts of Spain. These “new” settlers kept up the agricultural activity that had been going on in the village up to then, including the terrace farming methods. These can still be seen in Sayalonga today.

The urban layout is just as it is to be expected of a Arabic village of its size; narrow windy streets with white-washed houses. A stoll through the streets brings the visitor to the Iglesia de Santa Catalina, which is dated from the 16th century. It is especially interesting because of the unusual circular cemetry. There is a farily large hamlet known as es Corumbela apart form Sayalonga’s village centre, and there are sevearl country estates scattered all over the municipality where a lot of foreign residents have set up home over recent years. The geographic location of Sayalonga has had a lot to do with what kind of activities have been done there from the very start. On one side is La Rábita, which is a rocky outcrop which the village sits on, while on the other is the Rîo Cêjula, which has been vital in the creation of a fertile land to cultivate. This river’s name has often been a bone of contention

between the inhabitants from Sayalonga and those from the neighbouring Algarrobo. In fact, things have been so bad that each village refers to it as their river and uses the name that they choose. The agricultural activity is true to the Mediteranean area it is in; with the olive, the almond, and wine being the three most important crops. However, due to the very favourable climate, the local farmers have been able to grow some tropical fruit with great success as well, so now there are medlars, advocats, kiwi fruit, mangos and custard apples as well as the more traditional crops. In fact, over time these new ones are slowly overtaking the old ones in production, due to the demand on the open market.

CYCLING MINI BREAK Flamingos and Cycling

M

y two younger friends (younger than me by years) posted on their Facebook page a picture of a cycle route from Olvera to Puerto Serrano, which they did on the first week of September, going up to 57 metre at the highest point of the route, and then down again. It took 2 hours 26 minutes, and was 36.6km. She has told me it was mainly downhill, Mini break to Cadiz province but ‘Strava’ on Facebook did show it going up! Website information: fundacionviaverdedelasierra.es Now I looked at the route and decided it would take me bit longer, there are 4 viaducts, 30

tunnels and 5 stations in which to rest. Also, there is help at hand if you suffer a minor injury or a puncture, they are called the ‘Green Patrol’, four people who work at weekends and on holidays located at intervals along the Greenway, performing the role of information guides. Reassuring! My friends stayed in the nearby town of Olvera, but you can stay in the apartments distributed between Olvera Station and its wagon houses. The Station is a hotel-restaurant and has six double rooms and a restaurant service, bike rental is available within walking distance there is the opportunity of sleeping in an old train car. These were initially

designed to make the tour of the railway line in the nineteenth century (they never started building the line until 1926!). A swimming pool is included. There is a lot of information if you log on to ‘Sierra via Verde’. Bookings.com has a lot of accommodation for Olvera. There is also accommodation at Coripe Station, about half way along the route, a rural house and other accommodation run by a different company. But once logged on to the initial website it was so easy to get bogged down on the offers of different accommodation, information, photos etc!

So, I emailed my friends to see what their experiences were, and this is what they told me: They drove from Malaga, which takes about 1hr 30min, but they took a detour to see the Flamingos for three hours. This Flamingo trip is: Laguna de Fuente de Piedra, meeting at Plaza de la Constitucion, Fuente de Piedra, and everyday there is a guided tour at 10.00 am and costs 8e for two hours. There are also guided tours at sunset. Website for booking and to see loads of photos with information: vistasfuentepiedra.es Olvera is a lovely Spanish town with an old part and a new part and an Arab castle, and it’s fairly cheap to eat out on food that is mainly traditional Spanish meat and fish dishes. Wine and beer are about 1.50e and a Bailys

3.50e (well they are girlies on a trip!) They didn’t stay at the Station itself but in a hotel in Olvera.

They were also advised that April is a good month for Flamingos and the riding, but any time cool I would think for the cycling.

The station to hire the bikes and start the trip, is about a 1km out of town, approximately a 20minute stroll, and it costs 12e a day to hire bikes which have to be returned by 3pm, (only on a Saturday). The route from Olvera to Puerto Serrano station is classed as easy, (as if 36km could be described as easy on the bum)!

The next day to recover they walked around Olvera and up to the Arab castle and paid 2e entrance fee to see the amazing views, and in the afternoon, they went to the pool to chill.

My, ‘fitter that me’, friend said its mostly downhill for 2.5 hours, but they did stop a lot and take some amazing photos of Griffon Vultures, eagles and amazing views in general. It’s more difficult to get back, as its uphill, and in her words, ‘36k was enough for me’ so they did what others have done, got a taxi with a bike trailer attached for 45e.

As long as it’s not too wet, this sounds a smashing mini break and I hope this whets the appetite for a holiday nearer home, without flying! Thank you for sharing it with me girls.

EXPLORING ANDALUCIA A Holiday Makers’ Coments On The Area.

B

etween the mountains and the sea lies Malaga, historical and cultural city of Southern Spain. Its cathedral dates back to the sixteenth century and is known as “the one-armed lady,” because the second steeple was never built. A Roman amphitheatre surrounds the Moorish castle or alcazaba, and the Museo Picasso, contains a collection of two hundred and four of the famous artist’s works. A mecca for street performers is Calle Marques de Larios, and here under the Spanish sun they vie for attention and juggle their skills. Horse drawn carriages carry tourists along avenues and squares lined with Jacaranda trees, and the city has an elegance and style not generally associated with the noisy costas.

66 The Grapevine

Missing out on these delights would be a mistake, as Malaga is all too often used merely as a stepping stone to other destinations. If however, your journey does take you on, travel 45kms along the coast to Nerja, an attractive town set amongst cliffs and overlooking rocky caves. Take a coffee or ‘San Miguel’ in one of the many cafes on the tree lined promenade extending along the cliff top, known as the ‘Balcon de Europa.’ While away a few hours in the pretty coves, and investigate the famous limestone caves, founded in 1959 by boys exploring the area. Magnificent stalactites, stalagmites and rock formations dominate these underground chambers, and if you are lucky enough to be there in July the annual festival of flamenco music and dance will

set your feet tapping. Tired of town life? Then head off into the campo. The mountain route winds through nature’s paradise, skylarks soar on the summer breeze and Oleander and hibiscus plants cascade down the hillside. Our destination was Competa, a sleepy village with a big heart. The following day, on the uncongested motorway, we headed for the ancient city of Cordoba, (approximately two hundred and forty kilometres from Competa.) Fields of sunflowers lined the route; the panorama opened under a peerless blue sky and our journey was completed in record time. In their zest to get this road up and running however, the engineers appeared to have forgotten such vital necessities as services, as there

To advertise call 637 028 873

were no toilets or cafes for over two hundred kilometres! Fortunately we did not have time to dwell on these problems. The outskirts of the city were approaching fast and it took all our concentration to find the hotel in the labyrinth of streets and security bollards. Edging down thoroughfares no wider than ten feet, nerves were frayed. “Watch out on your side,” said my husband “I don’t want to scrape the bloody car!” In common with most big cities a car in Cordoba is a liability, and it was with a great sense of relief that we finally parked the vehicle. Now we were free to explore the city on foot, and after a couple of sherrys to steady nerves, and tapas to steady rumbling stomachs we made our way along cobbled streets to the Roman Bridge.

To advertise call 637 028 873

The Guadalquivir River was once navigable up to this point, and made Roman Cordoba an important economic hub. Items from the period are housed at the Archaeological Museum. Continuing to stroll we found ourselves in the medieval streets of the Jewish Quarter. From as early as the second century, Jews formed part of Cordoba’s cultural mix. The synagogue was unfortunately closed for the day, and finally fatigue set it and we came across a ‘Salon de The’ with a distinctly Moorish atmosphere where we sampled patisseries and drank tea out of coloured glasses. Our tour ended on a high note, as nothing prepares you for the magnificent site of the Mezquita. Formerly a Christian church, then a Mosque, it is now a Roman Catholic cathedral, and is the mother church of the Dioceses.

As we wandered through its vast interior, sun glinted through stained glass windows onto the mosaics used in the construction of the mihrab (sacred area from where the imam lead prayer) and a myriad of red and beige stone arches stretched out for as far as the eye could see. Transported into a different world, the busy streets outside seemed far away and we suddenly became aware of our own mortality and felt humbled inside this place of worship. For the discerning holidaymaker, Andalusia has a lot to offer, so take in the sights and sounds and I guarantee you will not be disappointed! Sally Chamberlain

NORTHERN SPAIN Where To Go, What To Visit & What to Eat

R

egardless as to whether your a foodie, a modern art fan, a romantic, a historian, an outdoor enthusiast or a party animal, Spain boasts endless options in the north and south. As the second largest country in Western Europe, you need to be prepared for lengthy periods of travel to get around. Spain is also likely a challenging destination for people who like an early night sleep as many cities never stop! Why you should visit Northern Spain Aside from Barcelona and Pamplona, the rest of the north is largely unknown to most visitors. Barcelona barely needs an introduction, as it is a lively city

that never sleeps and is a hotspot for night owls and beachgoers.

Asturias Cantabria Galicia

The rest of Northern Spain, however, is comparatively an oasis of calm filled with mountains that attract hikers, mountain bikers and adventuresport enthusiasts. Then, there are the mountains of Navarre and Aragon dotted with castles and walled medieval towns, a reminder of the Catholic strongholds during the middle ages. Of course, there are many reasons why you should visit Northern Spain, and this is just the start of your bucket list.

which offers some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, unknown to the crowds of the Mediterranean.

Continuing west along the coast, you will find:

This is where green mountains plunge into the sea, where small fishing villages continue to enjoy life at a relaxed pace. f you’re into trying new flavours, Northern Spain is for you. Txakoli sparkling wine in the Basque lands and Sidre (cider) across the north are both popular drinks you’ll want to try alongside your pintxos (small, shared platters), or for the more mature palate (and wallet), there’s the wine region of Rioja and a solid list of Michelin-starred

restaurants featuring world-famous chefs. The north of Spain is also a perfect destination for people who enjoy nature and quiet getaways, and those who prefer driving holidays. While Barcelona is popular yearround, peak summer should be avoided (where possible) due to the crowds. Winter offers mild temperatures and reduced hotel rates, leaving early spring and late fall as the best times to travel. Madrid is generally much colder than Barcelona in the winter as it’s perched on a plateau almost 660 metres above sea level, so is often cooler in the summer than Barcelona. September is harvest time in the vineyards which guarantees endless festivities, including the battle of wine in Haro. While the mountains see heavy snowfall in the winter, nestled by the French border at the base of the Pyrenees, San Sebastian offers a mild climate year round and even opportunities to learn to surf! Most importantly, it’s well worth checking out the festivals that are happening during your travel dates as the Spanish love an excuse for a party. Landmarks of Northern Spain Camino de Santiago It’s likely you’re more familiar with the hot spots of Northern Spain than you realise. You may or may not be familiar with the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage to the burial site of St James himself. We’re almost certain your camera will get as much of a workout as your legs wills. Toledo Let’s not forget Toledo, the medieval city painted by El Greco and Spanish capital during the middle ages, just an hour south of Madrid. In 1986, Toledo was declared to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site (just in case you needed another reason to go). Barcelona From Las Ramblas where you can

watch the world go by during the day or tasting your way through some of the best food you might ever encounter, Barcelona stands out as a must-visit destination in Spain. Barcelona is the where you will find many of Gaudi’s masterpieces, while day trips from Barcelona include Montserrat and various museum’s of Salvador Dali’s work. Madrid Heading inland, Madrid is one of Europe’s most underrated capitals and is home to some impressive art galleries and museums. For a glimpse into the lives of the royals, look no further than the Royal Palace in Madrid or check out the vintage stores and flea markets such as the El Rastro Market in La Latina. Cuenca Cuenca the town of the ‘hanging houses’ along with Segovia where you can stand under a perfect Roman Aqueduct. If you’re short on time during your Spanish adventure, we can assure you won’t regret a detour (or extended stay) to Cuenca. Food From Northern Spain 1. Pintxos These bite-size pieces of heaven are served on a small piece of bread with a variety of toppings including; anchovies, green peppers, sausages, croquettes, cheese, eel, octopus, tortilla omelet or even cured ham. 2. Marmitako This warming fresh tuna and potato stew is a staple in the Basque country and the dish translates to “from the pot”. It is a soupy yet thick stew which used to be cooked on the fishing boats and can now be found in restaurants all over the region. 3. Pescado Asado a la Vasca This freshly caught Basque fish is baked in the oven with garlic and herbs, served with fresh vegetables and potatoes. This dish is simple, yet great.

4.Chuleta Rib Eye Best served in the Basque region, these perfectly seared cutlets will leave your mouth watering and served with the perfect amount of sides; you can’t go wrong! 5. Txistorra A Basque festival food that consists of a lightly cured pork sausage rolled into a warm, thick corn tortilla, to be eaten like a hot dog in a bun. 6. Chiperones One for squid lovers, this dish is a serving of fried baby squid. More recently chiperones have become more refined as restaurants have begun serving them in a cuttlefish ink sauce. 7. Croquettes These round crunchy outer and soft inside pieces of heaven are a favourite for many. With a potato base and the option to add cheese and jamon (ham). 8. Paella The holy grail of all Spanish cuisine! With an abundance of fresh seafood from the Bay Of Biscay it is impossible to say no to any paella in Northern Spain. Coupled with aromatic rice, rich in flavour you will be more than satisfied with a big helping. Paella does have various seafood, meat and vegetarian options too. 9. Tarta de Santiago This rule-breaking dessert hails from Galicia in Santiago de Compostela where pilgrims finish their journey each year. Essentially it is a thin almond cake adorned with a dusted with icing sugar cross of St James and is served at room temperature. . 10. Churros con chocolate No foods from Northern Spain list is complete without these hot, delicious doughnuts. Sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar and accompanied by a delectable melted dipping chocolate sauce. Double dipping in this instance is perfectly acceptable.

The natural park offers wonderful terrain for walkers, with shaded paths through oak forests and olive groves and gentler, scenic routes along the shores of the lakes. As well as relaxing and taking in the beautiful scenery, there’s plenty to do. Throughout the Summer, La Isla recreation centre offers mountain bikes for hire, as well as paddle boards, kayaks, and peddle boats. It’s the main area for the lake’s water-sports activity and it’s the pin in the location map, below. The El Chorro Lakes are made famous by the “Caminito del Rey” paths that border this beautiful nature reserve. From the Caminito del Rey pathways you can really appreciate the size of the lakes of El Chorro.

There’s also an excellent traditional Andalusian restaurant, Restaurante El Mirador Ardales, which has stunning views from the rustic outdoor dining area, overlooking Embalse del Conde de Guadalhorce below – well worth a visit. There’s a stepped path down from the restaurant’s terrace to the lake for anyone wanting to exercise away their lunch. There are also a handful of other restaurants and kiosks dotted along the Eastern shores of the lake. At the northern most tip of the lake, La Cantina and Restaurante El Kiosk are great spots for a leisurely coffee and from which to enjoy the view. Restaurante El Kiosk is also next to the entrance of the spectacular Caminito del Rey walking route, which is one of the most popular tourist activities in Andalusia; be sure to book tickets for this in advance.

OCTOBER PLANS Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh of Viveros Florena, Cómpeta

A

fter such a scorching summer some of our gardens are looking a little tired and sad – weary of the heat, like us! Where the sun has scorched down to bare earth, and roots have burnt, plants may even have succumbed. Once average daytime temperatures have settled to around 30C, or less, is the time to take action. Many plants will have gone into estivation (summer dormancy or torpor) and are now waking up needing a shower, change of clothes and a good feed! Rain will perk them up, tidy them so they look their best and fertilise with a general purpose feed. Mother Nature will be sowing her seeds now and so can we. Check what replacement plants you need and, maybe, plan a few new introductions – it's what makes gardening such fun! We can all be seduced by large plants at garden centres – they often just look so droolingly fabulous! If you've the money, they have their place often as a

84 The Grapevine

specimen plant or in a special corner of your garden where you need something instant. Don´t feel guilty about it, one magnificent plant is often the heart of a scheme but for the majority of the garden, starting small is usually best and, of course, cheaper. You can buy a lot of tinies for the cost of a giant and get a mass of pleasure from them. Nurturing and caring for your babies over the years makes them all the more loveable. Plant things that you really want to try and, if they've only cost a few euro and don´t work, well, it's no great loss. Try something else! The other advantage with planting small is that you can fit a lot in. No matter how seasoned a gardener you are, if we're honest, we'll always try and fit more into a space than we should – and with reason. A shrub which will ultimately spread to 2m wide is going to look very isolated and gawky given that sort of spacing from tiny so, of course, we fill in with other plants. We know very well that, at some stage in the future, we're going to have to

make some difficult decisions – throw some, or transplant, or spoil their natural flow by trimming to meet their confines? We all do it, so don´t blame yourself too much. Gardeners love plants, it's as simple as that, and something new, or long-desired is always going to tempt! Another important point is to visit your garden centre often. Yea, I know, I can hear you all laughing – I do own a garden centre after all, what else would I say? But there is some logic there. When you visit in spring, everything is flowering, looking lovely, you buy lots. So when you plant it, your garden will always look fabulous in springtime – but what about the rest of the year? You need to, at least, visit your garden centre in summer – see what is surviving the heat well, then catch all the flaming seasonal colours and ripe berries of autumn and the beautiful barks and evergreens of winter. That way you will be buying for all seasons and your garden will look better for it. I would go as far as saying that you should visit monthly, but you might disagree!

We work hard to bring you plants that are not only out of the ordinary but are eminently suitable for your gardens. And if they're not tough, we'll tell you they're going to need a little more t.l.c. So, back with us this month is the lovely sangria plant (tagetes lemmonii, Mexican marigold or Copper Canyon daisy). It smells and looks as delicious as it sounds and is one of my favourite scented plants – full of exotic fragrance when you lightly brush a leaf – pineapple, mango and strawberries all waft up at you. It sounds like it's going to be a diva but nothing is further from the truth. A native of Mexico and a hot full-sun lover. We've two new salvias; Ember's Wish has deep coral to burnt orange flowers emerging from dusky rose bracts and Love and Wishes with deep purple flowers and burgundy bracts. They're both lovely, such striking colour combinations, and, again, ideal for hot sunny positions.

Hesperaloe parviflora Rubra, known as the red or hummingbird yucca is native to the Chihuahuan Desert of Texas and into Mexico – that means it's a survivor – loving heat and hardy down to -20C, they don´t come much tougher. It's rarely seen, so we're delighted to have this lovely scarlet flowerer in stock. And, at last, we have very limited supplies of comfrey and young moringa trees. I know that many of you have been wanting these – you've been asking me for them over many years – so get down here quickly before stocks run out. CHURROS History And How To Make Them.

W

hen it comes to breakfast, most of us are divided into two camps: team sweet or team savory. In Spain, most locals are squarely in the team sweet category well as they often greet the day with churros con chocolate. Yes, that’s churros with liquid chocolate we're talking about, and, yes, it’s a delicious and has been happening in Spain for hundreds of years. While you can totally find churros sprinkled with cinnamon sugar in the States, but churros originated in Spain and we’ve got to give credit to where the sweet snack originated. A Brief History Of Churros You have to start by asking yourself: what exactly is a churro and how did it originate? When it comes to the history of churros, it’s complicated. Some historians say that the Spanish churro is a

descendant of a Chinese pastry, called youtiao. The Chinese pastry fried in oil and looks like two long, conjoined breadsticks and isn’t dressed in sugar or dunked in chocolate, like you’ll see in Spain (or in the States, Mexico, South America, or filled with guava in other countries, but more on that below.) The story goes that Portuguese explorers brought Youtiao back to Iberia where it then took on its distinct, star-edged shape and sweetness as the pastry gained popularity throughout Spain. Others say that churros were an invention of Spanish shepherds who fried a dough made of flour, water, and salt – the same base ingredients (in addition to butter and eggs) for the churros we know today – as a substitute for fresh bread. The story also goes that the name for the pastry was supposedly inspired by the ridged horns of the native Churra sheep, an aesthetic which the fried treat takes after.

While the history of the churro may be fuzzy, history is more certain when chocolate got involved. Churros were introduced to South America during the Spanish Inquisition in the 1500s. Around the same time, the Spanish returned to Europe with cacao, which they sweetened with sugar cane to make the kind of thick, hot chocolate that’s perfect for churro dunking. The humble combination of flour, water, and a pinch of salt, churros are one of the greatest breakfast foods humans have ever created. Next, those Playdough noodles get tubed into a vat of frying oil and sizzled until crispy and golden. Fun fact: churros are most often fried in Spanish olive oil. This means it’s healthy (or as anything fried can be!). In many cities throughout Spain and Portugal, the traditional churro comes in a star shape.

The extra ridges mean the churro has more surface area, so it’ll get crispier when fried. It also means the churro won’t burst when the dough starts to expand in the heat of the oil. It also means the churro won’t burst when the dough starts to expand in the heat of the oil. In Andalucía, however, the standard churro is a different shape. It’s a shape that the rest of Spain would know as porras.
