Editors Note..... Over the last couple of months my family and I have been away for a few long weekends camping. The kids love it, we think of the money we have saved and it gets us out of the village and we see somewhere different. Most definitely our favourite place to camp is in Tarifa. There are 6 campsites all along the famous stretch of beach called Valdevaqueros, with a bus running between them all and into Tarifa Town. We have been there a few times now, always staying on one of the campsites with a pool so giving the kids a choice and a chance to retreat from the windy beach. Watching the kite and windsurfing is great and so is later relaxing in one of the cool beach bars (Valdevaqueros or Tanga are our favourites) with a Mojito!

Tarifa town is great for shopping if you like branded surf gear and there are also some excellent restaurants. However, the beach area is my favourite part with it’s incredible white sands and spectacular dunes . If you haven’t been it is well worth a visit. Don’t worry there are plenty of hostels and hotels so you don’t have to camp! My advice though, is book early as the place is mostly fully booked for July and August and nearly always in these months there is a minimum stay required.

The society's chairman, Hans-Michael Klein, says he has received concerned emails from workers on the issue. He advises people in the workplace to stick to the traditional handshake. “People say this is not typical German behaviour - it has come from places like Italy, France and South America�Hans-Michael Klein,Knigge Society. Speaking to the BBC, he admitted it would be impossible to ban kissing in the workplace outright. "But we have to protect people who don't want to be kissed," Mr Klein added. "So we are suggesting that if people don't mind it, they announce it with a little paper message placed on their desk." Mr Klein said he had received 50 emails this year alone on the rise of kissing on the cheek - sometimes both cheeks - as a greeting at work. "People say this is not typical German behaviour," he said. "It has come from places like Italy, France and South America, and belongs in a specific cultural context. We don't like it, they say." The society held a meeting on the issue, and carried out a survey of people both on the street and at their seminars, he said. "Most people said they didn't like it. They feel there is somehow an erotic aspect to it - a form of body contact which can be used by men to get close to a woman." He said there is, in Europe, a "social distance zone" of 60cm (23in) which should be observed. The Knigge Society, named after a German guide to good manners, is based

Use it and abuse it
A
lthough I have never considered myself to be a thief since I have left the UK and a “proper” job my stationery cupboard has never looked so bare. Sure I still have my calculator with 'Stores. Do not remove' TipExed on it, but can I ever find a pen these days? No is the answer, along with scissors or paperclips. In fact a paperclip is something I have never actually bought in my life, so I can only presume the paperclip industry relies on the fact that A) they will be stolen borrowed by the employees of the companies that buy them and B) that the majority of paperclips are never actually used for clipping paper, rather they are used as stress-relievers, nail pickers, ear cleaners etc etc. This, as a race is what we do; something is invented, a great thing; a thing that could be award winning and has spent years in development. And then we use it to wipe our bottoms on, or something bottom related probably. A fine example of this is the fax machine. Oh how we marvelled at how we could print out a document and then send it half-way around the world to another fax machine to be read by the recipient. But what happened? Marketing companies would send huge faxes

containing the latest special offers. The main problem this was that the recipient had to buy roll after roll of thermal paper to keep printing the faxes. At one of my previous “proper” jobs I was often the first to arrive; on the floor would be a huge snake of paper spat out by the fax machine and the machine itself would have a flashing light that meant “quick, put another roll of paper in I have more faxes for you”. With shaking hands I would add the paper – it could be the large order the company was waiting for – press go, only for a picture of a paperclip to come out followed by the text “This week only, half price paper clips!” I guess this was an earlier version of the spam email but at least they do not actually cost us anything (unless you really do believe that a man in Nigeria has £1 million pounds he wants to share with you then you are on your own). The fax abuse did end there because the same wacky colleagues that first thought of photocopying their bums suddenly realised they could do so and then fax the pictures of their hairy butts to head office. Hilarious! (not). Strangely enough this is what crossed my mind whilst reading about the fantastic developments

in 3D printing. Basically a 3D printer is exactly what it sounds like; a printer that can make a solid 3 dimensional object using different materials such as plastic, resin and paper. The uses of this are endless; a surgeon could “print” a 3D model of a patient's heart before he begins cutting into them. Engineers can look at something they have designed before making prototypes and so on. But the thing that crossed my mind was that people will be printing off their rude parts in no time and sending them to the shy girl in accounts. Misuse of the latest technology is by no means a new phenomenon; the motion picture was invented in 1895. In 1896 the oldest surviving porn film was made. Say no more; I am surprised it took that long. It just confirms what we all knew. Sex sells (which is why Alick in Todo Papel always wears his shorts in the shop by the way – be careful ladies!) just think of the card of peanuts in the pub; as each packet was purchased the picture of a bikini-clad model would begin to appear. To this day I cannot work out if that is why I fancy a packet of Big D

whenever I go to the beach. A similar ploy was used by the Tennent's brewery in the 80's when they printed a selection of beach-attired lovelies (I use that term loosely) on the side of each tin of lager. So as a 17 year-old discerning lager drinker trying to buy beer with his mates in Mr Patel's off license, no prizes for guessing which brand I chose. Worryingly, I also remember my mum buying me some of the same lager a few times; god, how spoilt was I?! That said it is clearly men that fall for that sort of thing. Anybody that was at the VivoAid concert in Cómpeta recently would not have been able to miss the male audience members drooling and standing up to get a better look at the Salares Belly Dancers. There you go paperclip manufacturers; stick a picture of them on the side of your boxes and watch your sales soar!

I
am not particularly artistic myself and perhaps have never realised or appreciated the skill, effort and love that goes into pieces of art and crafts. Over the last few months of speaking to members of the CompetaAt group my interest in the Art world has increased and certainly has my appreciation for it all. What has become apparent to me is how hard it is to develop the hobby or interest in Art to a career that is financially viable. In fact most of the artists I have spoken to have found the commercial aspect of their work is where they have very little interest or enthusiasm. This month I met Rex Gates who enviably has managed to develop his skill into a career, producing his work for exporting wholesale but also managing to maintain the local charm of his works through his shop in Competa. I have lived in Competa for 7 years and Rex for 30 years and we have never been formally introduced. I ashamed to admit that I didn't realise the lovely shop in Competa opposite the Bodega sold local handmade pottery by the owner himself Rex Gates! Rex first started to come to Competa with his family staying in the Fuengirola part of the Costs del Sol. Rex, originally from the States, spent many a happy holiday on the coast. It was when some good friends they had met over the years decided to buy a house in Spain did Rex happen upon Competa. Rex and these friends spent many months exploring the Malaga area however with one visit to Competa and within 10 minutes of being in the village they had bought a property! Rex felt the same as his friends about the village and used this house as a foothold when ever he visited Spain. Some 5 years later he came over to Competa to rent a house on a long term basis having totally fallen in love with the place.

Rex comes from a family of potters as a child he recalls thinking everyone had a potter's wheel in their basement! His mother was a potter and so he learnt skills from an early age and continued this with formal training at a design school in Massachusetts. He then went into a Production Pottery which created handmade flowerpots on mass. It was here Rex learnt about mass production, various kilns and the commercial aspect to pottery. However, Rex longed to make a business out of his skill himself. Whilst on another visit to Spain he decided to move from the States and set up in Competa and make a viable business out of his pottery. He first took on a long term house rent and set up his 1st pottery which was his studio and workshop in the area where la Bodega stands now. He made his stoneware and porcelain here and sold to tourists. However, Rex admits at this time there where a lot less tourists than now in Competa so a lot of his income relied heavily on wholesale. He attended trade fairs in Madrid, London and Oslow and gradually built up good base of customers. The studio he rented was then sold for construction purposes and so Rex rented another workshop on the road between Canillas and Competa. He also bought a house which had come on the market opposite La Bodega which is still his shop to date. Later he finally bought a plot in the Campo to start to build his own home and studio.

I visited Rex at home and he explained the plan of the outside space was dictated by the repsol lorry being able to turn round after his gas delivery. Rex uses propane gas cylinders to fire his kilns and Repsol visits regularly to check that everything is complaint with rules and safety regulations and of course deliver the gas. Rex showed me round his workshop and explained the pottery process which was fascinating. I have encouraged him to open up to the public once in while to provide demonstrations at the wheel and explain the whole process. He has 3 kilns all for different purposes, one of which he built himself. Rex still enjoys that moment of opening the kiln to see how his work has turned out; he described it similar to Christmas mornings as a kid! Rex's work is on display in his
shop la Posada in Competa along with other items that he buys in such as Glassware and jewellery. Rex is incredibly talented and produces some great stoneware in some beautiful colours so take a good look round is lovely shop.

Restaurante El Pilón

l Pilón Restaurant has been at the heart of Cómpeta life for many years, having been created by Christian Griffiths. Ray Rowden and Tom Sobel have now joined Christian in El Pilón and a re-launch party was held on July 27th to celebrate the new team, which was attended by 280 people. The Mayor provided an opening speech, offering good wishes to the next phase of El Pilón. Tom and Ray are no strangers to the hospitality service. Tom managed many bars and restaurants in the USA whilst at University and his family ran a chain of Pizza stores during his childhood. Ray co-owned a holiday resort in Kerala, South India for twelve years, which he developed and built up, focussing on marketing and customer care. Ray said ” We wish to ensure that the original vision for El Pilón as created by Christian remains intact. We have refreshed the paintwork, including a new sign and put new chairs on the terrace, but the essence of El Pilón will remain unchanged”.

Christian commented that “The balance of skills in the new team is perfect, I can now focus my energy on cooking great food, Tom has a good eye for detail and computer skills and administration, and Ray has good ideas for looking after people and ensuring that our customer service improves”. The team have ambitious plans for the future, including new ideas for the terrace, which will be double glazed for winter use. This will allow the terrace to open earlier in summer and remain open later in the autumn, allowing customers longer opportunities to enjoy stunning views and a great dining experience. In the winter the terrace will be transformed into a stylish cocktail and lounge bar, offering a relaxed venue where a full range of cocktails will be available, alongside a special menu of light bites for those not wishing to take a full meal in the restaurant. Tom and Ray will be offering a range of activities in the new bar through the winter months. Tom has become known as a popular DJ locally. He told The Grapevine Magazine.

“I am looking forward to providing music for some great party nights for the local community and winter visitors and will also be planning for some local artists to perform in the new lounge bar, it is very exciting and feedback on our winter ideas has been fantastic”. Ray will be providing monthly ballet and opera nights on the big screen. He started this idea with Inez and Emmanuel at The Alberdini last winter, which was well received. Ray said “The Alberdini and the lounge bar at El Pilón will share the winter ballet and opera nights, with a show each month, alternating between the two venues, all opera shows will have English subtitles and I will, as usual, provide an introduction to each performance”. The Salon has extended over the last year or so from a hairdresser to a hair and beauty salon acquiring new therapists along the way. anet Van Dam started her new practice of Medical Thermography in December last year and in the quiet month of August she had time to reflect on how everything was going. had time to reflect on how everything was going. Janet has been able to establish 5 good bases where she offers a my mobile service throughout the Axarquia and beyond (Mijas Costa, Palma de Mallorca) and she has screened 100 people up to date, the majority of them women, who wanted to have a preventative, first-line breast screening done. Only one of them came back which needed a further follow up with an ultrasound. In a few months she will be able to do the follow up, so she can compare that screening with the first. In March Janet applied for a grant with the Junta de Andalucia for women who set up a new business and 2 weeks ago she had a letter to say that she had qualified for it. Obviously Janet is over the moon with this news! Her steady work flow and this grant have given the business the boost she was looking for and enabled her to take the bold step into opening her own clinic. The new name for the clinic is Well-Therm and from the 1st of September you will be able to find Janet in Av. The Rooster A farmer wanted to have his hens serviced, so he went to the market looking for a rooster. He was hoping he could get a special rooster - one that service all of his many hens and when he told this to the market vendor, the vendor replied: "I have just the rooster for you. Randy here is the horniest rooster you will ever see!" So the farmer took Randy back to the farm. Before setting him loose the henhouse though, he gave Randy a little pep talk. "Randy", he said. "I'm counting on you to do your stuff". And without a word, he strutted into the henhouse. Randy was as fast as he was furious, mounting each hen like a thunderbolt. There was much squawking and many feathers flying, till Randy had finished having his way with each hen. But Randy didn't stop there, he went in to the barn and mounted all the horses, one by one and still at the same frantic pace. Then he went to the pighouse, where he did the same. The farmer, watching all of this with disbelief, cried out "Stop, Randy, you'll kill yourself". But Randy continued, seeking out each farm animal in the same manner. Well the next morning, the farmer looked out and saw Randy lying there on his lawn. His legs were up in the air, his eyes rolled back, his long tongue hanging out. Buzzards were already circling above Randy. The farmer walked up to Randy saying "Oh you poor thing, look what you did, you've gone and killed yourself. I warned you my little buddy". "Shhhhh" Randy whispered, "They're about to land.�

‘ACTION FOR ANIMALS NEEDS YOU! I’d like to start by saying a huge thank you to CAMPO who very generously donated 400 euros of their income from the pantomime (oh yes they did! ) towards paying our latest bill at Naturvets. Thank you! Our neutering projects continue. There are still many stray cats on our Cómpeta streets and in the campo that need to be neutered and we are desperate for additional help with the Trap, Neuter, Return Project. It's really very simple. You trap a cat ( humanely, of course! ) take it to the vet to be operated on, then collect it later to return to the place it was caught. Voila! One neutered cat. If you are willing to help with this, please contact me on 660586040 or call into the shop, at Avenida Constitución 59, for an informal chat. You can also email me on nina@actionforanimals.org We are also about to embark upon a rather large mission to help fund the neutering of over 20 stray cats in Salares. Again, if you would like to help with this project, please let me know. Once again. I've lost count of how many kittens and puppies have been rescued from bins over the last few months by various people. It's horrendous.

Rehoming these animals is EXTREMELY difficult. There is no local animal shelter to take them to until owners can be found and there are very few people prepared to foster. But there's really no need for any of this to happen. Action for Animals offers financial assistance for animal neutering, to people on a low income. If you know someone, a neighbour or friend, who might just consider having their pet neutered if they could get some kind of financial help to do so, please tell them about us and ask them to come into the shop and see me. You really can do your part to help.
SPANISH SUPERMOTO CHAMPIONSHIP IN VILLENA, VALENCIA. The Spanish supermoto championship visited the chicharra circuit at Villena, Valencia on Saturday the 30th July for the 3rd round of the championship. Britain’s Anthony Ford-Dunn who lives in Bullas, Murcia was hoping to improve on his previous race results at Oliva in May. A last lap crash had left Anthony in hospital with a serious concussion and his championship in tatters, as his main rival scored a win and
Anthony came away with no points and a thumping headache.Anthony was determined to get his championship fight back on track at Villena, a track that suits his style of riding. Qualifying went well and he positioned himself in 2nd place on the grid for the first of two races. After a hectic first couple of laps Anthony was in a comfortable 2nd place when disaster struck! He hit a bump in the dirt section of the track that sent the bike sideways and into the trackside barrier, Anthony kept the bike upright but lost valuable seconds trying to untangle his bike from the tyre wall. ‘I couldn’t believe it, a tyre from the trackside barrier had wedged itself into the back of my bike. It took me ages to free the bike and all the time I was losing time and positions’ said Anthony after the race. Once free from the carnage, Anthony charged through the field to finish 3rd at the flag. A result that Anthony was more than happy with after all things were considered. The second race was more straight forward with Anthony finishing 2nd and taking 2nd overall for the race meeting. Anthony’s Older brother Mathew was riding in the SM road championship for the first time and had a fantastic race to finish in 3rd position on the rostrum. MOBILE PHONE MAST IN TORROX Torrox Town Hall will carry out an investigation into the details of the mobile phone mast installed at the Generacion del 27 district. Residents in the area have complained of illness due to the mast.
TORRE DEL MAR DRINKERS Business owners in Torre del Mar claim to be “satisfied” that the town hall has “finally” fulfilled the promise to do away with street drinking in El Copo nightlife area. The agreement to do away with the groups of up to 2,000 youths who were gathering in the area at weekends to drink (known in Spain as ‘botellon’) was signed with the previous governing team last year. Police patrolled the area last weekend to hand out fines of up to €300 and confiscate alcohol, something which was seen as a positive
sign not only by businesses but also by residents who complain of the noise and dirt left behind by the partying youths. Torre del Mar has one of the best offers of bars and discos along the coast, but while the businesses are happy with the measures which have been taken, local youths and those who come from neighbouring towns to take part in the ‘botellon’ complain that the bars and discos charge too much for drinks and that most of them are unemployed. They said that there were no other leisure options for youths in the town, unlike other areas, and claim that they are being “excluded” from the town, and forced to go to the car park of El Ingenio shopping centre so they don’t annoy anyone. Local residents also complain that alcohol is being sold by itinerant salesman whose products do not pass any kind of quality control.
