Editors Note... As I am writing the September’s editors note I can’t believe we are nearing the end of the summer holidays. I am not sad to be sending the kids back to school in a couple of weeks but I will be sad to see the close of summer. Despite some of the most unbearably hot days I have experienced since living in Spain, it is still my favourite time of year. We all seem to be more relaxed, in and out of the pool and with plenty of 'al fresco' dinning. My favourite memory of the summer is the week I spent with my husband in Cadiz without the children something we hadn't done for 8 years.

he Russians are coming! Tourist numbers this summer are showing more Russian visitors in some areas. In Salou for example there are more Russian tourists in the town than the British. They represented 36% of the hotel room occupation in the first half of July. The traditional British tourist no longer occupied 30% of the Salou rooms. Hotel reservations in the town for the first half of July were 458,194, up 3.3% on last year. Between them the Russians and Britons together make up 80% of the August occupation in the Valencia region, according to the Tourism Councillor, Dolores Johnson. She said Benidorm is expected to reach a 93% accommodation level in August, while Alicante will be 74% and the Castellón coast will be about 70%.. High numbers of Russians has also been recorded on the Costa Dorada, which has also seen a reduction in the numbers of national tourist. In Tarragona, one out of each five visitors come from Russia, but few spend the night in the city

taking the alcohol limit on the roads down to zero. It would mean that anybody who had drunk just a drop of alcohol could be punished. The DGT says alcohol starts to effect drivers after just one drop and they are considering introducing a zero tolerance as has already been applied to drugs. The current alcohol limits are 0.5 grams in a litre of blood, or 0.25 grams in a litre of breathed air, reduced to 0.3 and 0.15 grams for drivers with less than two years experience and for professional drivers.

The Government says that as part of its austerity cuts, the right to a free public health service is being removed. The Ministry for Health intends to collect 710.40 € a year which is 59.20 € a month from immigrants without residency permission in Spain. Such paperless immigrants will however only get any access to health service if they have been registered at the local census padron for a year.

The female black bear had apparently made its way into the Pittsburgh Mills centre through automatic doors."It darted past several people. icrosoft has swiftly fixed an embarrassing gaffe which saw a chunk of code labelled "big boobs".The hexadecimal string 0xB16B00B5 was discovered lurking in code that helps a Microsoft program work with Linux open source software. The controversial string came to light on a mailing list for developers who oversee the core, or kernel, of Linux. The string was used every time the Microsoft program ran a virtual version of Linux. Kernel hacker Paolo Bonzini posted a message about the string on the Linux Kernel mailing list saying "Somone (sic) was trying to be funny, I guess" Microsoft was alerted to the mistake and swiftly issued a statement."We thank the community for reporting this issue and apologise for the offensive
string," it said to Network World. It added that it had prepared a patch that would change the spelling of the string in an update.

Bangladeshi man who went missing for 23 years has been reunited with his family, who had given him up for dead. Moslemuddin Sarkar, 52, arrived back in Dhaka on Tuesday, a day after being freed from a Pakistani jail with the help of the Red Cross. His family lost contact after Mr Sarkar left for India in search of work in 1989. Years later, he ended up in Pakistan, where he was arrested. He says he was beaten and tortured in his subsequent 15 years in prison. "I requested that embassy officials send me back to Bangladesh but no one listened to me," he told the BBC. “I suffered a lot in the prison and was crying for help. But no-one came to my rescue. Still I don't understand why I was kept in jail for such a long time. At last, I am back with my family and I feel great."

Bizare Business Ideas Five bizare business ideas that have made millions! 1.The married man who created an affair website for married people. Ashleymadison.com is a dating website with a difference; it only accepts married people, or someone wanting to date a married person. The site's slogan is "Life is short. Have an affair". The site founder is a former attorney Noel Biderman, who is interestingly a happily married man. Although his mission can be perceived as very wrong, the fact that the site claims 3.2 million members suggests that it's also doing something right. 2.The man who created a million dollar business of dog poop-scooping. The most noted pioneer in the poop-scooping business is Matthew Osborn, who runs Pooper-Scooper.com. He never knew that this business would one day make him a millionaire. Osborn got started back in 1987 when he opened Pet Butler in Columbus, Ohio. At the time, Osborn was working two full-time jobs and making less than $6 per hour at each. He had a wife, a daughter and a son on the way, and was desperate to make some extra money. He learned that

there were about 100,000 dogs within 15 miles of his home. The business slowly took off, and despite the dirty work, Osborn says he enjoyed satisfying the customers and working outdoors in some of the nicest backyards in Ohio. Eventually Osborn employed seven people and owned a fleet of six trucks serving about 700 regular customers. While Osborn may have put poop scooping on the map, Matt "Red" Boswell is taking it into the future. Boswell owns the Texas-based Pet Butler. Today, Pet Butler is the largest pet waste removal service in the country, and serves about 3,000 clients. 3.The company who made a fortune selling glasses for dogs. Eyewear for a pet dog? Sounds pretty dumb doesn't it? But not if someone actually starts manufacturing them and turns them into a million dollar business. The business has received attention and coverage from CNN, Women's World, People, Regis and Kelly, National Geographic and Animal Planet. Starting off with goggles, they have now expanded their business into a host of other
Who would ever think that there would be a market for fake plastic wishbones? Well… there is! Ken Ahroni was frustrated that every year only two people got to make a wish around the Thanksgiving table. So he decided to create LuckyBreak, a company that would make synthetic wishbones with the sound and feel of real dried turkey wishbones. Now the company makes 30,000 wishbones a day, selling customdesigned, imprinted units for personal, corporate and promotional use. Their sales are over $2.5 Million per year. 5.The housewife who invented the microwaveable pillows. Kim Levine, invented Wuvit, little bags that come in various patterns and provide soothing penetrating moist heat. Kim realized that if she put some corn in cloth, sewed it together and then put it in the microwave; a warm relaxing pillow would be created. She rushed to create the simple product idea with her sewing machine and her multimillion dollar empire was born! Initially, Kim thought the Wuvit® concept would just be great gift for her kids and for people in her local area. But soon she realized her idea had huge potential. When local parents started calling her in the middle of the night asking for another soothing pillow because their kids could not sleep without the Wuvit®, she knew she had a fabulous opportunity. She started going to local retailers and craft shows, and then eventually got a major break when Saks Department Store decided to put the Wuvit® products in their stores! Now she's a millionaire and has even written a book about her retail endeavors!

During that time, the only way to reach the land was by boat or air. Surprisingly, the Spaniards allowed the border to reopen in 1984, although the action was somewhat reluctant with Spain saying that they were suspending any forcible action for the time being.
GIBRALTAR Worth a visit if you haven’t been already.
F
or those of you thinking of a trip to Gibraltar, here is an overview of this unique rock, including language, culture and shopping. Gibraltar is a quirky little rock of a country, colloquially known to locals as 'Gib'. Surrounded by flat land, Gibraltar seems to rise out of nowhere, visible for miles around. Nestled at the Southern end of Iberian Peninsula and overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar, Gibraltar dominates the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. It is home to approximately 30,000 Gibraltarians who mostly hail from Britain, Spain and Morocco creating a multi-faceted culture. Gibraltar's Official Language English is Gibraltar's official language which is used in schools and politics. Many locals are bilingual, speaking Spanish or Arabic as well as English. Llanito is their local language, unique only to Gibraltar. It is a mixture of
14 The Grapevine
Andulcuan Spanish, British English as well as other European influences. Its name, 'Gibraltar' comes from two words, Gebel, the Arabic word for mountain, and Tarak, the Arabic / Moorish invader of Spain. Tarak spearheaded the Moorish conquest of the Iberian Peninsula by invading Gibraltar back in 711 AD. Gibraltar as a Self-Governing Land Gibraltar is a self-governing British overseas territory. Its ownership is a strong sore point for the Spaniards, more so since it became a British territory in 1704 after it was captured by an AngloDutch movement. Dedicated to winning back power, Spain conducted three sieges but they all failed. Since the Gibraltar Constitution Order in 1969, Spain closed its border disallowing access. The British side kept their doors open, appearing to say that they were open to integration while Spain was clearly not.
The Macaca Sylvanus Apes One of Gibraltar's main tourist attractions, if not its main one, is the tailless species of Barbary Apes, Macaca Sylvanus. They are the only free-roaming monkeys in Europe. Hailing from Africa, it is believed they were originally imported as pets or maybe game by British forces back in the early 700s. The apes are such an entrenched part of Gibraltar that urban myth says that when the apes leave Gibraltar, then the British will also. This probably an appealing thought for the Spanish, given the tension between the two countries regarding Gibraltar's ownership. Culture and Shopping As probably expected, Gibraltar has a strong British feel intermingled with strong Spanish and Moroccan influences. These multi-influences create a country that is unique; a place where at times it is hard to decipher its dominant nationality, if in fact it does actually have one. The town itself could be any quaint English town transplanted onto the Costa del Sol. It has all the high street shops typical of an English high start such as Marks and Spencer, Mothercare and BHS so homesick Brits can feel at home and keep up with their shopping needs. British essentials such as fish and chips, pints beer are also plentiful and never far away. Unfortunately, while Gibraltar is definitely a place to see, it is also a tourist trap. It's expensive despite the duty-free alcohol and cigarette. It is significantly more expensive than its neighbouring Spanish coast. If you visit, don't forget to talk to the apes!

A Reflexology Treatment The Grapevine visits E.G.O. hair and beauty in Competa
I
days work for her and if she was not interested in the upkeep of my feet I certainly wasn’t going to worry about it.
Mel said she’d had a treatment with Wendy the week before and almost floated out the treatment room she was so relaxed! I was convinced, so the day was booked. Wendy is available every Friday and appointments are pre booked in advance. She is a qualified therapist with the Association of Natural Medicine and has been working in Spain for 15 years.
Wendy explained her back ground to me and how she was a regular therapist at Finca El Cerillo where she had built up a tourist clientele who often pre- booked her services before arriving in Spain. She was keen to explain a little about reflexology but certainly didn’t blind me with science. In a nutshell it is a relaxation technique that allows the body to balance itself. Pressure on areas of the feet stimulates the body’s immune system and helps correct any imbalances. Although I was only having one treatment she definitely recommends three to help with any chronic conditions. However, a single treatment is very relaxing and reduces stress…. So lets see then I thought!
As I arrived for my appointment it only then dawned on me reflexology meant touching my feet! Along with not relaxing easily I am not good at the up keep of my extremities. I wished desperately I had booked a pedicure with Mel prior to my treatment. However, immediately on meeting Wendy she put me at ease, obviously this was all in a
As with all good therapists she asked about my medical history and any pre- existing conditions. This was done whilst my feet relaxed in a foot spa in a private treatment room at the back of E.G.O.’s Hair and Beauty Salon. Once the questions were over she dried my feet and asked me to get comfortable on the therapists couch. Wendy was keen to make
don’t ever seem to have the time to sit back and relax in the day, so when Mel from EGO approached me about having a reflexology treatment in the Salon with her therapist Wendy I was slightly hesitant. It seemed rather indulgent to have a treatment at one of the most stressful times in the month for the magazine and would it be worth it, as I would be so uptight and not able to relax?
22 The Grapevine
sure I was comfortable. Was it better to sit up, lie down, a bit of both, with or without cushion? I found the best position and lay back. Once lying down I didn’t really feel the need to talk I was happy to lie there and experience the treatment. Luckily Wendy sensed this and said she was happy to do the treatment without talking unless I had any questions. For her whether she talked and explained all through the treatment or let the calm music take over neither was a problem. The key was making sure you are the most relaxed you can be. She covered her hands in oil and started to massage my feet starting with the toes and working her way down to my ankles. If an area hurt or felt more uncomfortable than another area I let Wendy know. She would then work a little harder on this area until the pain lessened. I asked the reason behind some of the areas we pin pointed. One in particular we picked up on was the area of my foot which related to the bottom of my spine. She asked if I had now or in the past any back problems. I hadn’t had any major problems but it would feel sore after running or going to the gym. Wendy advised I shouldn’t ignore these symptoms and I should take care of myself in this area before it became a chronic problem. During the course of the treatment I did feel very relaxed and slightly fuzzy in the head! Wendy was an excellent therapist who made me feel at ease and calm. Normally, I would have suffered with PMT Pre MAGAZINE tension at that time of the appointment. However, over the following few days I was definitely calmer. I will also keep an eye on my back problems so I don’t have to return to Wendy to solve a chronic condition. Although returning to Wendy for another treatment does sound like a nice idea! Thanks Wendy and Mel at E.G.O hair and beauty in Competa

Future Foods We have to rethink what we eat, say food futurologists.
V
olatile food prices and a growing population mean we have to rethink what we eat, say food futurologists. So what might we be serving up in 20 years' time? It's not immediately obvious what links Nasa, the price of meat and brass bands, but all three are playing a part in shaping what we will eat in the future and how we will eat it. Rising food prices, the growing population and environmental concerns are just a few issues that have organisations - including the United Nations and the government - worrying about how we will feed ourselves in the future. In the UK, meat prices are anticipated to have a huge impact on our diets. Some in the food industry estimate they could double in the next five to seven years, making meat a luxury item. "In the West many of us have grown up with cheap, abundant meat," says food futurologist Morgaine Gaye. "Rising prices mean we are now starting to see the return of meat as a luxury. As a result we are looking for new

ways to fill the meat gap." So what will fill such gaps and our stomachs - and how will we eat it? Insects Insects or mini-livestock as they could become known, will become a staple of our diet, says Gaye. It's a win-win situation. Insects provide as much nutritional value as ordinary meat and are a great source of protein according to researchers at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. They also cost less to raise than cattle, consume less water and do not have much of a carbon footprint. Plus, there are an estimated 1,400 species that are edible to man. Gaye is not talking about bushtucker-style witchetty grubs arriving on a plate near you. Insect burgers and sausages are likely to resemble their meat counterparts. "Things like crickets and grasshoppers will be ground down and used as an ingredient in things like burgers.” The Dutch government is putting serious money into getting insects into mainstream diets. It recently
invested one million euros (£783,000) into research and to prepare legislation governing insect farms. A large chunk of the world's population already eat insects as a regular part of their diet. Caterpilars and locusts are popular in Africa, wasps are a delicacy in Japan, cricketss are eaten in Thailand. But insects will need an image overhaul if they are to become more palatable to the squeamish Europeans and North Americans, says Gaye, who is a member of the Experimental Food Society. "They will become popular when we get away from the word insects and use something like mini-livestock.” Sonic-enhanced food It's well documented how the appearance of food and its smell influence what we eat, but the effect sound has on taste is an expanding area of research. A recent study by scientists at Oxford University found certain tones could make things taste sweeter or more bitter. The Bittersweet Study, conducted

by Charles Spence, a professor of experimental psychology at Oxford University, found the taste of food could be adjusted by changing the sonic properties of a background soundtrack. "Sound and food have been experimented with by chef Heston Blumenthal. His Fat Duck restaurant has a dish called the Sound of the Sea, which is served with an iPod playing sounds of the seaside. The sounds reportedly make the food taste fresher. But more widespread uses are developing. One that could have an important impact is the use of music to remove unhealthy ingredients without people noticing the difference in taste. "We know what frequency makes things taste sweeter," says Jones, also a member of the Experimental Food Society. "Potentially you could reduce the sugar in a food but use music to make it seem just as sweet to the person eating it.” Companies are also increasingly using the link between food and sound in packaging. One crisp company changed the material it used to make packets as the cruncher sound made the crisps taste fresher to consumers. Recommended playlists could
also appear on packaging to help enhance the taste of the product. Jones says the use of sound is even being applied to white goods. Companies are looking into the hum fridges make, as a certain tone could make people think their food is fresher. Lab-grown meat Earlier this year, Dutch scientists successfully produced in-vitro meat, also known as cultured meat. They grew strips of muscle tissue using stem cells taken from cows, which were said to resemble calamari in appearance. They hope to create the world's first "test-tube burger" by the end of the year. The first scientific paper on labgrown meat was funded by Nasa, says social scientist Dr Neil Stephens, based at Cardiff University's ESRC Cesagen research centre. It investigated invitro meat to see if it was a food astronauts could eat in space. Ten years on and scientists in the field are now promoting it as a more efficient and environmentally friendly way of putting meat on our plates. A recent study by Oxford University found growing meat in a lab rather than slaughtering animals would significantly reduce
greenhouse gases, along with energy and water use. Production also requires a fraction of the land needed to raise cattle. In addition it could be customised to cut the fat content and add nutrients. Algae Algae might be at the bottom of the food chain but it could provide a solution to some the world's most complex problems, including food shortages. It can feed humans and animals and can be grown in the ocean, a big bonus with land and fresh water in increasingly short supply, say researchers. Many scientists also say the biofuel derived from algae could help reduce the need for fossil fuels. Some in the sustainable food industry predict algae farming could become the world's biggest cropping industry. It has long been a staple in Asia and countries including Japan have huge farms. Currently there is no large-scale, commercial farm in the UK, says Dr Craig Rose, executive director With 10,000 types of seaweed in the world, including 630 in the UK alone, the taste of each can vary a lot, says Rose.

barrow to tractors and dumper to mini diggers. JELLYFISH What do you do if you get stung by a jelly fish?
E
very year thousands of bathers fall foul of these nasty little creatures. Summertime can bring a common danger to the Mediterranean; jellyfish (medusas).
They tend to occur in swarms and so are easily visible and, in theory, avoided. A combination of factors determines the concentrations of jellyfish in a given year. A warm and dry winter and spring inland will normally lead to a high buildup of jellyfish at sea. This seemingly unconnected chain of events is because the cold, less salty water of the coast acts as a barrier to jellyfish. They normally live between 20 and 40 miles from the coast where the water is warmer and saltier. However, when rain-fed freshwater river input is lower, salinity increases, allowing the jellies in.
identified by a ring of brown dots around a white saucer-shaped body, as it gives a potent sting which can produce extremely painful, long lasting weals. More worryingly, this year, dozens of Portuguese Man-o-war (Carabela portuguesa - Physalia physalis) were detected off the Asturian coast among swarms of harmless Velella Velella. The purple Man-o-war is not a true jellyfish, but a colony of hydrozoan polyps. It can, in extreme cases, provoke a cardiac arrest and death in particularly sensitive persons. Q. What do you do if you get stung by a jelly fish? A. Act quickly and calmly to remove the tentacles, stop the stinging, and deactivate any toxin.
Other factors include winds and sea currents. Jellyfish just drift in the currents like buoys. Hot summer weather certainly also brings them in, which also attracts us in our millions, therefore sting numbers increase dramatically. Jellyfish can also swarm in the winter but nobody notices. Probably the commonest jellyfish in the Spanish Mediterranean is a nasty little one called the Sea Nettle or Mauve Stinger ('medusa luminiscente' Pelagia noctiluca). Its swarms can lead to beaches being closed.
Here is where people get confused, because the best steps to take depend on what type of animal caused the sting. Here's a good basic strategy, especially if you don't know what caused the sting:
jellyfish (Chrysaora hysoscella),
. possibly worsening the situation.
1. Get out of the water. It's easier to deal with the sting and it takes drowning out of the equation.
4. Keep an eye on the victim. If you see any signs of an allergic reaction, call the emergency services immediately. Symptoms could include difficulty breathing, nausea, or dizziness. Some redness and swelling is normal, but if it spreads outward from the sting or if you see hives on other parts of the body, that could indicate an allergic response. If you suspect a reaction, do not hesitate to seek medical attention! 5. Now... if you are sure the sting is from a jellyfish and not a Portuguese Man of War or any other animal, you can use chemistry to your advantage to inactivate the toxin, which is a protein. How do you inactivate proteins? You can change the temperature or acidity by applying heat or an acid or base, such as vinegar or baking soda or diluted ammonia, or even an enzyme, such as the papain found in papaya and meat tenderizer. However, chemicals may cause the stinging cells to fire, which is bad news for someone allergic to jellyfish toxin or anyone stung by a Portuguese Man of War. 6. Some people carry aloe vera gel, Benadryl cream, or hydrocortisone cream. I'm not sure how effective the aloe is, but Benadryl is an antihistamine, which may help limit an allergic response to the sting. Hydrocortisone can help reduce inflammation. If you seek medical attention and used Benadryl or hydrocortisone, be sure to alert the medical professionals. Acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen commonly are used to relieve pain.

Visit...Nerja Nerja History and points of Interest
N
erja has a long history, evidenced by the primitive paintings found in its famous Nerja caves, discovered in 1959, and now Spain's third most-visited tourist attraction (after the Prado in Madrid and the Alhambra Palace. These caves are now believed to be just one entrance to a linked series of potholes stretching many miles into the mountains between Nerja and Granada, and which may yet prove to be one of the most extensive unexplored systems in Europe. The Romans gave the settlement the name "Detunda", and it was later taken over by the Arabs. Under the Muslims, it became "Narixa", which means "abundant spring", and is the origin of its present name. Its agricultural and silk products are said to have been famed throughout the Muslim world and in the markets of Damascus as

early as the tenth century. The Balcon de Europa, a mirador or viewpoint which gives stunning views across the sea, is in the centre of the old town. Its name is popularly believed to have been coined by King Alfonso XII, who visited the area in 1885 following a disastrous earthquake and was captivated by the scene. However, local archive documents are said to show that its name predated this visit. The Balcon area was originally known as La Bateria, a reference to the gun battery which existed there in a fortified tower. This emplacement and a similar tower nearby were destroyed by British led forces under Major General Blayney in 1810 to deny their use to French occupying forces during the Peninsular War. THE BALCÓN DE EUROPA Balcony of Europe – is situated
on a rocky promontory and was formerly a fortress designed to keep out British pirates and privateers. Today it is the focal point of the town, affording magnificent views up and down the coast. It is also the location for various concerts and 'fiestas' throughout the year, including the 'not to be missed' New Year celebrations with firework displays, music and dancing until dawn. Most of the processions through the streets of Nerja, of which there are many, either start, finish or pass through the Balcón de Europa. The Promenade – Paseo Balcón de Europa – is now completely pedestrianised, as are the adjoining streets (calle Puerta del Mar, calle Pintada, calle Cristo and calle Carabeo) and it is lined with cafés and restaurants and in the summer months is a hive of activity until late at night.

THE CHURCH OF EL SALVADOR Iglesia El Salvador – is a lovely building situated opposite the Balcón de Europa and close to what used to be the Guards Tower. It was erected in 1505, although the existing structure was not built until 1697, and was then further extended during the period 1776 – 1792.The interior of the church is well worth a look. The Balcón de Europa directly overlooks two beaches, Calahonda (left)and La Caletilla(right), and provides access to a third, El Salon (right). There are numerous ice cream vendors, bars, cafes and restaurants either on or bordering the Balcón de Europa (Marissal, La Biznaga, Balcón de Europa Hotel, Kronox, Mediterraneo, Albi) plus there is a square just behind the Balcón de Europa, Plaza Balcón de Europa, which is home to a host of good bars and restaurants (El Patio, El Portico, La Mandarina, Centurion, El Candil and more). And if that's not enough choice, there are dozens more within a couple of minutes walk. NERJA CAVES Cuevas de Nerja – are a series of huge caverns stretching for almost five kilometres and home to the world's largest stalagmite, a 32 metre high column measuring 13 metres by 7 metres at its base. There are three Galleries – Show Gallery, Upper Gallery and New Gallery – with each gallery containing a number of Halls. The Upper Gallery and New Gallery contain many of the prehistoric cave paintings, but tourist access to these areas is limited to special groups. The Discovery On January 12th 1959, five local lads from the village of Maro decided to go hunting for bats and headed for a pothole known locally as 'La Mina' where they spent the night watching a great

The Team at The Team Group!
TEAM GROUP The Grapevine Interview Geoff Cheshire owner of Team Group
I
n these more difficult times it is unusual to be talking about investment and expansion, but that is exactly what The Grapevine did with Geoff Cheshire owner of Team Group. The interview with Geoff took a slightly unusual slant as I interviewed him over the phone at the end of a day’s cycling! Geoff and an old school friend had challenged themselves to cycle across France from Roscoff to Biarritz in 11 days. Last year the trip was Santander to Malaga and next year they plan Iceland. Then in 2014, if the business allows both in time and finances Geoff plans to cycle east to west across the US. So it seems he is a man
40 The Grapevine
that both works and plays hard! Geoff, who is originally from the Isle of Man, moved to Spain in 2000 with his wife Anke, who is German and their three children. Both had moved around a lot due to working in the travel business. Geoff explained their eldest had already attended 8 schools and had 13 different nannies, by the time they came to Spain. As with many corporate couples, family life often took a back seat and soon this became a bone of contention amongst them. They decided to move to Spain to improve the quality of their family life. There was never an intention to retire, but build a business that would support them in Spain.
Team Espana was an established Estate Agency in Nerja, originally founded by Rod Thomas 8 months earlier. Rod approached Geoff to buy the business, however both him and Anke opted to join Rod instead. They had 7 successful years together during which Anke set up Dream Espana, a rental business, also in Nerja. She sold Dream Espana in 2005 and it is credible to note that it is still running today. At that time Team Espana was also involved in selling in various different countries in Europe and the Middle East. Geoff explained the market was entirely different when Rod left to how it is now and thus so was Team Espana. Anke started

holiday rentals again in 2008 and is currently managing 140 properties. Team Espana originated as a 100 % Sales Estate Agency however it has developed with the changing market and now 50 % of its business is in sales and the other 50% now lies in the rental and property management market. Due to the emergence of different sectors they are now called “The Team Group”. This comprises of Teamstar holiday rentals (property rentals), Team Espana (property sales), and Teamstar services (property management) and more recently they have added Inland to its portfolio. I asked Geoff about this new acquisition and how it was going. The answer was honest and insightful. He explained that there had always been collaboration with Inland, an estate agency based in Competa, previously run by Stein and Lisa. Due to their close ties he was approached by Lisa from Inland with a view to becoming part of the Team Group. Geoff had reservations about an actual presence in Competa but brought in an Office Manager, Karin who has been with the company for several years and trialled the situation for 6 months. He was honest enough to admit that the costs involved in a second office just weren’t commercially viable. As a result he is still continuing with the Inland brand, but from the Nerja office. It will also be business as usual with regard to the strong presence in the advertising media. Geoff was keen to inform me that all his vendors had been written to or spoken with. There should be no impact on the vendors as we have all their details on our Team database and Karin will still be responsible for the Inland Brand. I asked Geoff what business as usual was for Team and what he felt set them apart from their competitors. He explained that key to the business was their honesty and integrity especially

Geoff Cheshire owner of The Team Group apt now where legislation is more of a minefield. For example they would not recommend a property if it wasn’t correct for a buyer. Team Espana would provide at all times an honest valuation of a property. They won’t inflate a property’s price in order to please a client with the idea of accepting offers. Team Espana also have an official and honest feedback process to vendors after viewings. This is often cited by sellers as a much needed process that should be implemented by all agents. Geoff explained every agent today is now working in a difficult environment but Team Group are continuing to invest back into the business and are determined to keep its same shape. This he said was challenging due to their large head count in Finance, IT, Sales, Rental and Housekeeping. However, he believes the market will return and when it does The Team Group will be at its strongest and able to capitalise on it. Over the last 3 years they have invested in IT within Team Star Rentals. They have rolled out to 350 agents in the UK an integrated software package that allows on line booking and real time updates of villa availability. The next period of investment will be made in property sales and their property sales website. In addition to being a key player on other agency websites such as
Right Move, by the end of the year Geoff hopes to have a new Team Espana fully optimised website running. Whilst The Team Group profile has changed over the years so has the property market. Geoff expanded further by saying there are less Brits and more Scandinavians buying and the demand for what they want in a lower budget range has increased too. The size of the market he believes has reduced by two thirds and the housing values have had a 35/40% reduction. Due to the political uncertainly a stabilising of the market, is the best Geoff believes we can hope for over the next couple of years. For his family and the Team group this isn’t an issue, they are in it for the long haul, their daughter has joined the business and in time they believe their son will too. They are a family business who employ long time served staff that they value considerably in making the business work. The team collectively put together, have reached 78 years of experience in the Team Group!!!!! that is something to celebrate !! It was a pleasure to talk to Geoff who is extremely passionate about his business. The only downside was talking over the phone to him but I am sure we will eventually catch up for that coffee!

The Fusion of Spain and Ireland, part 2. (Our first international landscaping project)
I
f you remember, last month I wrote about the garden we recently landscaped in Dublin – a true fusion of Spain and Ireland – and I promised you details on plantings. We had about a month to plan our trip to Ireland but time there would be tight so we tried to organise as much in advance as possible. Tools had to be hired, materials ordered and a nifty delivery schedule organised so that not everything arrived at once but, notwithstanding, so that everything was there when we wanted it – tricky!
46 The Grapevine
I revelled in the wider range of plants available there and contacted five different garden centres with a list of requirements, requesting availability and prices. Given that it was a fairly large order and I explained our tight schedule, I was confident of a rapid response – after all, we are talking Ireland, where the roar of the Celtic tiger was, until recently, so loud, and not laid-back mañana-land Spain! Although all the other businesses we dealt with responded rapidly and efficiently, sadly this was not the case with garden centres. Only one company replied and I’ll say their name loud and clear – Johnstown Garden Centre – because they were supremely helpful and

efficient throughout the project and, of course, they got the job. They could not, however, supply a large specimen tree and a few other larger items that I wanted so I chased up the others. Again, only one came back to me – Campbell Plants – and, once we’d got them under tow, they were also very helpful and on time with deliveries. Of the others, least said the better - maybe they’re sunk in the peat bogs of Ireland somewhere! I’m telling you all this because I know there’s a great tendency to think that it’s only Spain – or Andalusia – where these things happen! Perhaps business and money has been too easy for too long and the garden centres have forgotten the principal of spoiling the customer. I happily admit that we may not always be perfect, but we do try! Our colour scheme of purple/plum, terracotta and melon, picked out in the giant tree stumps, loomed large and clear and I’d carefully chosen plants to compliment, or even dictate! A large weeping purple beech, fagus sylvatica ‘purpurea pendula’, was selected as our specimen tree to regain some of the privacy of the garden. It will perform the necessary screening job, yet mature to old age in a much more refined manner than the previous c. leylandii. It’s a wonderful tumble of purple/black foliage sweeping down to ground level and forms a fabulous contrast with hackonechloa macra alboaurea spread at its feet. This Japanese forest grass is a vivid and refreshing lime green forming elegant arching mounds. It holds its colour well throughout the year and, in sunny positions, can take on streaks of deep burgundy red and melon. Along the rest of the wall, and to increase privacy in a more rapid manner, we planted fargesia robusta ‘Campbell’, the Campbell bamboo. This elegant bamboo is, importantly, clumping and non-invasive, reaching some 6m in its native habitat and a metre or so less in Irish gardens – plenty for our purposes. The chequerboard effect of white sheaths and the dark green culms is unexpected and striking. It sways and dances in the wind, performing its own lively version of Riverdance. Swirls of heuchera ‘Georgia Peach’, swinging and singing bright peachy orange foliage delicately threaded with silver mixed with the darkly brooding, almost black, leaves of heuchera Obsidian - the combo was wicked and instantly stunning! Towering apricot foxgloves gave height to the picture and phormium ‘Platts Black’ added its spiky architectural look. The Mediterranean was introduced with the use of large leaved foliage plants such as a variegated fatsia japonica and the dramatic jagged leaves of melianthus major which, again, contrasted wonderfully with the black phormiums and were woven through with the steely blue-grey of festuca glauca ‘Intense Blue’ and ophiopogon nigrescens ‘Black Mondo’, both intensely coloured grasses. The mini lime green euphorbia Humty Dumty, hosta ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ the intense physocarpus ‘Diablo’ and

the long dangling lambs tails of itea ilicifolia all played their part. To link all these colours I used a couple of fabulously coloured Japanese maples, acer sangokaku, the coral bark maple and a. pseudoplatanus ‘Brilliantissimum’ combining shades of coral/shrimp, streaks of apricot/ orange, plum undertones and bright green. Where we’d removed the old oil storage tank and flue chimney, there was a lovely sheltered little corner, so here Andalucia won the day with a shady palm, trachycarpus fortunei and plantings of the striking sunset-coloured cordyline ‘Southern Splendour’. With the soft terracotta walls as a backdrop, this corner became an instant favourite with the family. Further along the wall we used the dramatic colours of coprosma ‘Pacific Night’ and ‘Pacific Sunset’ – their polished glossy leaves dark as a night sky and streaked with sunset colours were, again, fabulous against the wall. From tiny, my grand-daughter has always called my partner Merlin; with his long white hair, I could see where she was going! It has been taken up by all the family so I was delighted to find the lovely dierama ‘Merlin’, dangling wands of deep purple flowers. It has added its own very elegant and magical touch to Merlin’s garden and I hope the garden will long continue to enchant him and his Irish family. Lorraine Cavanagh has lived in Spain for 26 years. It is also the fastest street legal car when tested again on July 10, 2010 with the 2010 Super Sport Version reaching a top speed of 267 mph. There is a tie for #2! 2. Aston Martin One-77 $1,850,000. It takes 3.3 seconds to reach 60 mph and it has a top speed of 211 mph. Its rarity (limited to 20) and slick design are
54 The Grapevine
the reasons why it is so expensive and costly to own. 3. Koenigsegg Agera R $1,600,000. The Agera R can burn 0-60 in 2.8 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 260 mph. It has the parts to reach 270 mph, but the supercar is electronically capped at 235 mph. With the completion of certain paperwork, the company will unlock the speed limit for one occasion. 4. Maybach Landaulet $1,380,000. The Landaulet is the most expensive sedan on the market and it can reach from 0-60 in 5.2 seconds. Probably the most luxurious car ever made with a convertible roof that can open fully at the rear. This car is made especially for those CEOs and Executives who have their own personal driver. 5. Zenvo ST1 $1,225,000. Able to reach 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 233 mph. The Zenvo ST1 is from a new Danish supercar company that will compete to be the best in speed and style. The ST1 is limited to 15 units and the company even promised "flying doctors" to keep your car running. 6. McLaren F1 $970,000. In 1994, the McLaren F1 was the fastest and most expensive car. Even though it was built more than 15 years ago, it has an unbelievable top speed of 240
mph and reaching 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. Even today, the McLaren F1 is still top on the list and outperforms many other supercars. 7. Ferrari Enzo $670,000. The most popular supercar ever built. The Enzo has a top speed of 217 mph and reaching 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. Only 400 units were produced and it is currently being sold for over $1,000,000 at auctions. 8. Pagani Zonda C12 F $667,321. Produced by a small independent company in Italy, the Pagani Zonda C12 F is the 8th most expensive car in the world. It promises to delivery a top speed of 215 mph+ and it can reach 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. 9. SSC Ultimate Aero $654,400. Don't let the price tag fool you, this American made car is actually the 3rd fastest street legal car in the world with a top speed of 257 mph+ and reaching 0-60 in 2.7 seconds. This car costs less than half as much as the Bugatti Veyron, yet has enough power to compete against the most expensive car. It is estimated that only 25 of this exact model will ever be produced. 10. Ascari A10 $650,000. This car can reach a tested top speed of 215 mph, zooming 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. The British car company plans to assemple 50 of these supercars in their factory in Banbury, England.

China's 7 other athletes are in the top 40 with 2 golds, including diver Chen Ruolin, and swimmer Ye Shiwen

M
ore than 10,000 athletes have competed in 26 different sports and 302 gold medal events at the London games. The biggest winner, the United states, stands at the top with 46 golds and 104 medals overall, and China, despite a strong start, now ends up at the 2nd place with 38 golds and 88 medals. Britain finds itself at the third spot at the end of the game, and Russia and South Korea round out the top 5. As the world's best athletes come together for over two weeks of non-stop action, numerous world records have been broken at the London Games. In the Women's 4 by 100-meter Relay, Team USA smashed the world record that had survived 27 years and grabbed the gold, finishing with 40.82 seconds. And Jamaica set a new world record in the Men's 4 by 100-meter Relay, and ended the United States' domination of this event, with a record of 36.84 seconds. And in the Men's 1500 meter Freestyle Swimming, China's swimmer Sun Yang broke the world record in a spectacular fashion by winning over 8 seconds. He's also China's first male swimmer that has ever won

an Olympic gold medal. Then China's 16-year-old swimming phenomenon Ye Shiwen demolished the previous record in the Women's 400-meter Individual Medley, finishing with 4 minutes 28 seconds point 43. American swimmer Missy Franklin also broke the 200-meter backstroke world record and became the 2nd most decorated Olympian of the London game next to Michael Phelps. And in weightlifting, North Korea's Kim Un Guk added the world record to his repertoire after setting the snatch Olympic record for his first lift. China's lifter Lv Xiaojun broke the world record in the men's 77-kilogram weight class. China's Zhou Lulu also set a new record in women's 75-plus kilogram weightlifting, lifting 333 kilos. American swimmer Michael Phelps grabbed 4 golds and 2 silver medals at the game. He has not only become the biggest winner at the London game, but also the most decorated Olympian of all time, with 18 golds and 22 medals overall. American Missy Franklin, Alison Schmitt, and Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt are also big winners of the game with
Some believe the only numbers that matter at the Olympics are those on the medal tally, but here are a few facts and figures that present a unique insight into London 2012!! According to analysis of web coverage, the best-looking athletes were the Paraguayan javelin thrower Leryn Franco, a runner-up in Miss Universo Paraguay, and the US swimmer Ryan Lochte. Team GB's Jessica Ennis was ranked third. Of all medallists, women cried more than men - 25 per cent as opposed to eight per cent. 16 per cent either bit or kissed their medal on the podium. Just 44 per cent sang along with their national anthem. The athlete with the longest nonhyphenated surname was Saeid Mohammadpourkarkaragh (26 letters). The Iranian weightlifter came fifth in the 94kg event. If U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps were a country, he would rank 37th in the all-time gold medal table. His total of 18 gold medals equals Austria and Ethiopia. At 71, the Japanese dressage rider Hiroshi Hoketsu was the oldest athlete at the Games. An average of two marriage proposals were made each day on "Marry Mound", a patch on the eastern lawn of Park Live, the Olympic Park's big-screen venue, which saw 25 proposals during the Games.

The Duchess of Cambridge is the luckiest royal Olympics supporter: Team GB won five gold medals while she looked on. She also witnessed two silver medals and three bronze. Princes William and Harry saw only seven British medals between them. Sponsor McDonald's was mentioned 3536 times in media coverage. August 7 was the London Underground's busiest day in history, with 4.5 million people travelling on it. The tallest athlete at the Games is 7ft 3in Chinese basketball player Zhaoxu Zhang. The highest bid offered for an Olympic torch, signed by Jessica Ennis, was ÂŁ7020 ($10,426). Bidding has now closed. It took Usain Bolt 41 strides to

At the heart of the 'wine route' in Competa is the 'wine museum'. Decorated with Andalusian charm, it has recovered the warm, friendly ambience of the wine cellars with its braced arches, brick columns and seasoned wood. Along with the delicious muscatel wines, dry, sweet, young and mature, made from the Rome variety of muscatel grapes, the local gastronomy includes the best cooked meat and sausages in the district, black puddings, pork loin, chorizo sausage, which you can buy together with other typical products like honey, raising, figs, olive oil, ceramics and rugs, in the 'wine museum' ..... A charming place.

Local News WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR AREA economy.” Muñoz also proposed the works be done in phases in order to begin without delay.
FERRARA BEACH IN TORROX It will will soon have two offshore breakwaters to protect it from erosion. According to the Mayor of Torrox, Francisco Muñoz, the Coast and Sea Maintenance Department has planned to carry out repairs on Ferrara beach, which has been continuously losing sand for the past several decades due to storms. The plan involves building two breakwaters; one parallel to the beach and the other perpendicular to the coast. The parallel breakwater will be 150 metres long, and the perpendicular breakwater will be smaller; 120 metres long and will be located across from the lighthouse. The head of the Coast and Sea Department has specified that the work will only affect the sea in front of the beaches, and that the promenade will remain the same as it always has been. The local government also pointed out that this construction will be very important for the town and its economy, “due to the damage that is done to the beach year after year, also affection tourism and the local
OLYMPIC TORCH BEARER IN ALMUNECAR One of the London 2012 Olympic torchbearers brought his torch to Almuñecar. Kevin Bartlett, who visits Almuñecar several times a year, is a Social Service worker in Ulster and a rugby referee. He was chosen to bear the torch in Northern Ireland, as a substitute for the original torchbearer. Bartlett showed the torch at a presentation at La Italiana cafe in Alumuñecar, explaining that each Olympic torch has 8,000 holes in it, representing the ‘inspirational’ people who were elected to represent their communities on the torch’s journey all over the UK. RENTAL PROPERTIES Homeowners who let their properties to holidaymakers are facing large fines unless they adhere to Spanish rental laws, the British Embassy in Madrid has warned this week.
The warnings come as the Embassy says it has been informed of a number of cases where property owners have received fines of up to 30,000 euros after being caught renting accommodation without the appropriate permits. In response, the British Government, via the Embassy's website (www.ukinspain.fco.gov.uk), is now offering advice on short and long term lets. Amongst other matters, the website points out that regulations on renting holiday homes vary depending on the region and therefore suggests seeking independent legal advice and checking local laws with the nearest town hall. It is also stressed that rental income must be declared to the Spanish tax authorities whether you are a resident in Spain or not. MESSAGE FROM ACOUSTIC ROOTS It is with some sadness that we have to report that at the end of this Summer Season Phil Simmonds will be leaving Acoustic Roots to follow other pursuits. Phil has been with the band since its' formation and his singing and guitar playing have made a huge contribution to the overall sound of the group. He will be much missed and we would like to take this opportunity to wish him success in his future ventures.
