Editors Note... I have had a great summer despite this year's intense heat but I am looking forward to enjoying the September temperatures and the kids back at school. Primary school starts on the 10th September and Secondary School on the 16th. This year I will have one child in each school and with start and finish times being different plus the various afternoon activities the tranquility of the summer will soon be forgotten! If you are looking to explore the mountains this month join up for the walking festival in Competa. There is a 4 day plan of different walks for different levels of fitness. Its a great way to see more of where you live and perhaps meet some new people on the way, see page 32. Front Cover: Early morning at Caleta de Velez

be out of danger after 74 days in hospital. However, the court heard that the child will "never fully recover from the effects of the hypothermia suffered. Her exact physical and mental dysfunctions will not be clear until she is more fully developed". In addition to the four-year sentence, the court ordered the woman to pay her baby daughter €63,074 ($69,053) in compensation. Sonia F.R. already had two other children, aged eight and five. The convicted woman’s parents have reportedly said they will adopt their granddaughter, who is currently being cared for by foster parents.

ending British police to Magaluf to help their Spanish counterparts keep an eye on holidaymakers who have long plagued the area with their drunken, raucous antics seemed like a good idea at the time. But it has ended in a PR disaster, with one of the West Midlands officers boasting about being “sozzled” after a day of patrolling around the party island. PC Martina Anderson told friends she was too drunk to spell properly as she uploaded a picture to Facebook of the sunset from the four-star spa retreat on Costa de la Calma, where she is staying with her fellow officer Sergeant Brett Williams. Officers from West Midlands Police touched down in Magaluf this week as part of a Foreign Officefunded trial to provide a familiar police presence for the island’s British revellers (PA).When her friend named Andrew Carroll replied: “I thought you were to stop people drinking too much, not join them” she quipped: “If you can't beat em…” The incident will cause further embarrassment to

panish woman who threw her newborn baby out of a window has been jailed for four years after being found guilty of attempted murder. The 37-yearold, named as Sonia F. R, from Madrid, had secretly given birth to the baby girl on Christmas Eve in a flat she shared with her parents. A Madrid court heard that the woman, who has a “moderate mental disability”, cut the child's umbilical cord, wrapped it in a pair of jeans and tossed it out of the ground-floor window onto a courtyard, a fall of around six feet. The woman was discovered by her father covered in blood and was taken to hospital. Some hours later, her mother spotted the baby on the courtyard floor and called emergency services. The baby’s heart had stopped and she was suffering from severe hypothermia, but she was resuscitated and was deemed to
Spanish woman has been fined €800 (£570) under the country’s controversial new gagging law for posting a photograph of a police car parked illegally in a disabled bay. The unnamed woman, a resident of Petrer in Alicante, south-east Spain, posted the photo on her Facebook page with the comment “Park where you bloody well please and you won’t even be fined”. The police tracked her down within 48 hours and fined her. The Citizens Security Law, popularly known as the gagging law and which came into force on 1 July, prohibits “the unauthorised use of images of police officers that might jeopardise their or their family’s safety or that of protected facilities or police operations”. Amnesty International condemned the law, saying that photographing police was vital in cases when excessive force had been used. Fines under this section of the law range from €600 to €30,000. Fernando Portillo, a spokesman for the local police, said the officers had parked in the disabled bay because they had been called to deal with an incident of vandalism in a nearby park. A rapid response is essential if they are to catch the offenders “in flagranti”, he told local media, adding that in an emergency the police park where they can.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS The story of Jagger
T
his month I'd like to tell you the story of Jagger the dog.
If you live in Cómpeta, you may have seen Jagger in the garden of the now defunct Bar La Roca, where he'd lived alone, locked behind bars and surrounded by an array of old ham bones, since the bar closed some years ago. Sometimes he had the company of a small colony of neutered cats I'd been caring for, but Jagger was lonely. I used to visit him daily to give him food and water through the gate as well as flea and tick medication when needed. More recently, he'd had an ear infection needing daily doses of antibiotics, surreptitiously concealed within some enticing frankfurters which he'd gently take from me as I pushed them through the bars. He was always so pleased to see me and so grateful for a little attention and affection. Day after day it broke my heart to see his face longingly peering out from behind the bars of the garden gate, as I said goodbye and walked away. I decided to ask his owner if he'd be willing to let me find Jagger a new home. At first he declined, but after a few months of gentle persuasion he finally agreed to

my pleas and the search for Jagger's new owner began. I posted Jagger's story on the Action for Animals Facebook page and many people were kind enough to share the post. Debbie in Scotland got in touch with me to offer him a home and we started to make plans for his journey abroad. He'd need a full health check, blood tests, new pet passport, microchip, worming treatment, and rabies vaccination before he could travel. When we discovered that Jagger was 9 years old, I grew concerned that we were about to subject this senior dog to the stress of a long trip to Scotland. We carefully weighed up the options and with nobody else coming forward to adopt him we decided that it would be worth the lengthy journey for Jagger to find happiness. Then something happened to change our plans. Paul and Veronique in Cómpeta contacted me, expressing an interest in adopting Jagger. This new development would mean he could stay in Cómpeta and wouldn't have to endure the stress of travelling. I contacted Debbie in Scotland to explain the situation and she agreed that staying in
Two days later, I finally managed to arrange access to Jagger's prison garden to take him to Naturvets and on to his new owners. I pushed open the heavy metal gates of La Roca and expected him to come bounding up to me, but he was nowhere to be seen. I called out to him and eventually he emerged from the shade of a bush at the back of the garden and plodded listlessly towards me with a slow wag of his tail. He willingly allowed me to slip a collar and lead around his neck and together we slowly walked towards the exit of the garden. Within minutes he was walking with renewed energy and vigour, eager to experience the sights, sounds and exciting smells of the outside world. He had been joyously liberated. His new life had begun. Jagger was free! Sadly, this story doesn't have a happy ending. As this article was going to print I received a phone call from Paul and Veroniqe telling me they don't want to keep Jagger after all. I've contacted Debbie in Scotland to ask if she's still willing to adopt him and as I write this, I'm still waiting for a reply. I don't want to have to return this poor dog to his prison. If you're reading this and can help Jagger by fostering or adopting him, please contact me. Nina Cordoray Downes Action for Animals Charity Shop, Avenida de la Constitución 59, Cómpeta. activity. We do not have to climb a mountain, swim the Channel or run a marathon to get fit and strong, we need to stop doing nothing and start using our wonderful bodies as they were designed.
IF YOU DON'T USE IT YOU LOSE IT' IS APPROPRIATE WHEN IT COMES TO DOING WHAT THE BODY WAS DESIGNED FOR... ACTION!
A
s the years pass, we feel it is sensible or even gracious to accept we are no longer capable of doing things that were entirely common place when we were a little younger, like being on the move for most of the day. Perhaps the joints begin to ache so sitting down for hours at a time watching the television, (and not getting up to stretch and move every 20 minutes when the advertising comes on!) using the internet or reading a bad book become more attractive options despite the evidence that failing to get up and move for at the very least a few minutes several times each hour, stimulating the blood and encouraging electrical and lymph activity wreaks tremendous
damage on our bodies. Indeed that very reason we excuse our sedentary options actually creates physical, mental and emotional distress; sitting for more than a short while really does harm the back, the knees, wrists, ankles as well as the heart, the liver, the kidneys, et al, not being physically stimulated causes negative chemical changes that affect the brain, triggering distress and mood changes The top killers of happiness and of health: Heart Disease, Cancer, Obesity, Diabetes, COPD, Depression, Skin and Muscle disorders are all aggravated by inaction and all improved and can ultimately heal with constant

Running, swimming, jogging, rebunding, yoga, tai chi, resistance training, hill walking are all accessible out here, and they are all by and large, cheap if not free to access, there is no excuse for failing to find a delightful way of caring for and respecting our bodies. Aging negatively is not inevitable, there are far to many examples of marvelous men and women in the 80's and 90's who are fit and fabulous. Muscle tone reduces, our legs, arms, boobs, tums and bums are sagging and we regret this state little realising or perhaps refusing to acknowledge, that this is all reversible providing we do something about it, like now. Be sure if we do not start today, in 12 months we will be sicker, more idle, more useless and wondering why we did not begin changing our ways last year. Sitting down is a decision to rest a while, staying sitting for more than 20 minute is a decision to cause damage to the body mind and spirit. The bottom line, literally is move it..and don't stop!

CONGRATULATIONS TODO PAPEL Todo Papel celebrate their 10th anniversary.
I
t was a pleasure to interview Alick and Debbie as they celebrate their 10th anniversary. The Grapevine was with them from the start and has often advertised their services and seen their business model change and grow over the last 10 years. 10 years is a fantastic achievement, even more so as foreigners in a country only just coming out of recession. For those of you that weren't here 10 years again let's start at the beginning, how did Debbie and Alick come to build a business in Competa 10 years ago? Alick started his working life in the Metropolitan Police Service but found this profession wasn't for him and moved into financial services while Debbie enjoyed rising through the ranks of a pharmaceutical company. Both were successful, busy people enjoying their working lives and accepting the stresses that went with it. However, Debbie was hit with redundancy and this marked a re-evaluation as to what was important to them. Did they really want to continue with their fast paced lives or should they use this moment to make some changes? Changes were what they decided and they weren't small! They embarked on a 10 day viewing
30 The Grapevine
trip in July 2004 to Malaga. They finally found Competa on their last day, sat in the Plaza Almijara and said this is it, this is where we want to be. They put an offer in on a house, it was accepted, and completion occurred in the September and then the following May they were in Competa to start their new lives! Next was a business, they needed to do something and the idea came very quickly. It wasn't easy to get greeting cards, or international newspapers so that's where their idea developed from and with a help from a friend their name too. For the first few years the shop was extremely successful, then recession hit, many expats returned to England and the exchange rate hit those that were retired in the village. Not only were there fewer foreigners in the village they had less money to spend. This was the first time they looked further than their original business model. They were now a well known and trusted couple in the community and this helped them develop and build Todo Casa. This side of the business offers property management services such as changeover cleans, pool maintenance, security checks and hire of equipment such as cots, baby seats and even wheelchairs! Todo Casa took off immediately and soon Todo
Papel became the shop front for their Todo Casa business. Not long after creating Todo Casa an opportunity arose to provide post boxes. The Competa Correos were starting to charge per individual for receiving post into one post box. This change in costs was not well received in the community especially in times of recession so Debbie and Alick started to offer this service too but at a much lower cost. Now they have over 200 post boxes and they provide an excellent postal delivery and receipt service from within the shop, even for customers who may not have a PO box. Debbie and Alick are very happy that the new services they are offering have been successful in the face of a challenging environment and they haven't stopped adapting. This year they have made investment into more tourist items such as souvenirs, tshirts, caps, tea towels, aprons and mugs. Competa itself has focused on tourism in recent years and so Debbie and Alick are keen to build a successful business within a flourishing Competa and to evolve with the changing customer needs. They especially wish to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all their customers, past and present for their support over the last 10 years. Without this invaluable support they would not be here. Every customer has contributed in making the last 10 years an enjoyable and sociable business to work in. They would like to invite you to join them on the 19th of September at the shop from 11am for some nibbles, a glass of fizz and a prize quiz to celebrate their 10th anniversary as a special thank you for all your support over the last 10 years. Here's to another 10 years!

CHURRO HISTORY A Spanish legend
L
et us take you back hundreds of years to the windswept mountain grasslands of Spain. Here nomadic shepherds tend the prized Churra sheep. Robust and productive, Churra are the favoured Spanish breed. Like their charges, the nomads are a hardy and adaptable people. They carry only essentials and rely on the Churra for most of their needs. High in the mountains baked goods are rare and bread is a special treat. It must be cooked in the open - but how? An ingenious cake-like bread that can be pan fried over an open fire Churros are born! For the mountain shepherds
36 The Grapevine
Churros soon became a daily staple. Originally similar to a bread stick, they were eaten plain or rolled in cinnamon sugar. The traditional star shape has developed over time. This ensures the fluffy inside texture is cooked through and gives the outside its crispness. From these modest beginnings, Churros became a great Spanish tradition.During the 16th century, famed Spanish explorers brought Churros to every port of the new world. They quickly became local favourites and this may be why many countries claim Churros as their own.
con churros began. Nowadays, piping hot chocolate sauce, prepared thick in the Spanish fashion, is still the favoured Churro accompaniment. From street vendors to fine restaurants, people of all nationalities and walks of life enjoy Churros. The fluted sticks of fried dough are usually sold in dozens or half-dozens and are tastiest cooked fresh. They remain popular breakfast, snack and desert fare right throughout Spain. Some say Churros are named after the shaped horn of the Churra sheep. Try to resist the enchanted Spanish doughnut!

Following on will be Aire Flamenco, a band of 3 musicians, from Cómpeta and Árchez. They play all styles of music, rock & roll, reggea, etc, although they recognize that Spanish music is their first love. Biddies que Bailan Irish Dancers (all local) will then perform an 8 hand reel followed by a ceilidh where you the audience have a chance to take part. This unique multi-cultural night of music was a huge success in previous years, please come along and make sure it is just as successful again this year. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.
Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es
The mean average monthly salary in Spain in 2013 was just €1,324 while 34 per cent of the country's 16,682,861 employees earned the minimum wage of €645. Tax office figures show that almost half of Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called

A FABULOUS DAY OUT ON THE OPTIMIST OF LONDON www.sailandstay.eu
L
ast month I had an absolutely fabulous day out on the Optimist of London 11 a luxury catamaran based in Marina Del Este harbour.
My family and I arrived at Marina Del Este and found Stephen and his boat on berth 60, opposite the Pizzeria. Having already pre booked the 3 hour cruise, which left at 12.30pm; we waited for others to arrive. There are various cruises to choose from, 3 hour or 6 hour trips or you can book the Catamaran for your own exclusive use. You can check availability on the website www.sailandstay.eu just put the date and time you want to sail and you can see how many places are left on the boat. I would suggest booking well in advance as places fill up incredibly fast. Two other families arrived and we all boarded the Catamaran and sat round the outside table to enjoy complimentary champagne and snacks of crisps, olives and fresh fruit.
54 The Grapevine
Whilst we tucked in, Stephen provided us with a safety talk and introduced us to Ali the crew who would be around to help and cook lunch. Then we were off leaving the bay of Marina Del Este heading towards Nerja. The catamaran had plenty of seating area options from the large net at the front of the boat to seats in the corners or the comfortable cushions placed around the sides. There were 11 of us on the boat plus Steve and Ali and there were plenty of places to make yourself comfortable, relax, sunbath and take the scenery in. You could help yourself to soft drinks, bottles of water and beer from the coolers whenever you liked; it truly was an indulgent trip. After an hour the anchor was lowered in order for the guests to take a dip in the sea or make use of the snorkelling kit on board. For those guests who were more adventurous you could take a ride out on a kayak or have a donut ride behind the rib that had been attached to the Catamaran.
My daughter and I took the doughnut ride option whilst my son wanted to snorkel and find Nemo! I had excellent fun and so did the other guests. Whilst we were all in the sea, lunch was being prepared on board so once we were back on deck we could relax with a glass of wine and help ourselves to a buffet of various salads, cold meats and fish, quiche and tortilla. Lunch was a fabulous spread and we helped ourselves to more, more than once! After lunch we headed back to Marina Del Este enjoying the scenery and our son got a chance to bring up the anchor and then later sail the boat. Stephen and Ali were great with the kids on board which allowed the adults to relax even more if that was possible! Our family had a great day out and we will definitely do it again and if you haven’t, you should definitely book a trip now, I can’t recommend it enough.

Les Festes de la Mercè, Barcelona
FESTIVALS - WHERE TO GO IN SEPTEMBER! This is an excerpt from Lonely Planet's A Year of Festivals.
F
estivals are a living, dancing museum of cultures and traditions in an increasingly globalised world. There is no better place for travellers to understand a country than an event where it proudly celebrates its individuality, whether through music, camel races or monumental food fights. The top festivities for September are listed below. Regata Storica (Historic Regatta) Location: Castello, Venice, Italy Date: first Sunday in September. These rowing races on the Grand Canal commemorate the welcome given to Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus, in 1489 after she renounced her throne in favour of Venice. The most famous regatta out of 120-plus that take place in the watery city between April and September, the event begins with a parade of boats decorated in 16th-century style and powered by crews in period costume. Giostra del Saracino (Joust of the Saracen) Location: Grande Piazza, Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy Dates: penultimate Saturday in June and first Sunday in September.
66 The Grapevine
Palio, Arezzo’s medieval jousting tournament is like taking a ride in a time machine to the days of knights and maidens. Churches are decorated with pictures of 12th-century crusaders and the streets fill with costumes from an era predating even Giorgio Vasari, the Renaissance heavyweight who grew up here. Braemar Gathering Location: Memorial Park, Braemar, Aberdeenshire, Scotland Date: first Saturday in September. Caber-tossing can be seen throughout Scotland’s rugged north during the summer, but the most famous Highland games take place in Braemar. More than 20,000 people, sporting kilts or, if they’re a less rugged tourist, more insulated apparel, converge on a 12-acre site. Umhlanga (Reed) Dance Location: Lobamba, Swaziland Dates: late August/early September Swaziland may be a pint-sized country, but Umhlanga attracts up to 30,000 participants. They’re all women, they dance with umhlanga (reeds) swaying above their heads and, like many ritual gatherings, the event is all about finding a partner.
Cure Salée (Salt Cure) Location: Tegguidda-nTessoum, In-Gall, Niger Dates: a week in the first half of September One of Africa’s most recognisable celebrations is the Salt Cure, held by Fulani and Tuareg cattle herders in the Sahara desert. While various groups gather for events, the Cure Salée held by the unique Wodaabé people is the one that has really grabbed the Western imagination. Horn Dance Location: Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire, England Date: Wakes Monday (first Monday after the first Sunday after 4 September) The date of the Horn Dance is not the only archaic aspect of this ancient rite. Held in a small village in the English Midlands, the ritual begins at 8am on the dot. The participants take the six sets of deer antlers, which carbon dating has revealed to be about 1000 years old, from the church. The horns are rather big, weighing between 7kg and 11kg. Janmashtami Location: Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, India Dates: Indian lunar month of Bhadra (August/September) Held on the eighth day of the en

Krishnapaksha (‘dark fortnight’), when the moon is waning, this mass pilgrimage kicks off an intense season of festivities, even by Hindu standards. It’s a birthday party for Lord Krishna, the blueskinned incarnation of Vishnu. Mid-Autumn Festival Location: China Date: fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month Also called the Moon Cake Festival, China’s harvest festival is an occasion to scoff these sweet treats. The cakes, made of a thin dough shell containing fillings such as jelly, dates and nuts or red bean paste, start appearing everywhere a month before the celebration. If they’re not sick of the snacks by the time of the event, celebrants eat them within view of the real star of the festival: the moon. Held on the September full moon, during the autumn equinox, the tradition is about observing the transition of the seasons. Imilchil Wedding Moussem Location: Imilchil, Morocco Dates: three days around the third week in September Like the Cure Salée, the festival held in the High Atlas town of Imilchil is all about livestock and finding a partner. The most famous example of 600-plus moussems, the event is a homecoming celebration for herders who have spent the summer taking advantage of grazing grounds. The cattle fair adds to the chaos created by souqs (markets) and nomadic campgrounds, which look as striking as the surrounding mountains. Egremont Crab Fair Location: Egremont, Cumbria, England Date: third Saturday in September This Cumbrian fest is one of the world’s oldest fairs, created in a charter signed by King Henry II in 1267. Over the centuries, the event has featured a variety of once-popular pursuits, such as

cock-fighting and bull baiting. But none have been stranger than the gurning competition. Cows' Ball Location: Bohinj, Slovenia Date: third Sunday in September Kitsch, possibly of the unintentional kind, comes out to play at the Cows' Ball. More than 50 years old, the festival marks a winter homecoming; not of men, but of cattle, which return to the alpine Bohinj valley after a summer spent in green pastures. Daisy and friends are truly the belles of the rural ball, as they are decorated with wreaths and shown off on a parade. Les Festes de la Mercè (Festival of the Virgin of Mercy) Location: Barcelona, Spain Dates: four days around 24 September. The Catalan capital’s festa major, a final burst of prewinter madness for the Mediterranean city, is dedicated to its co-patron saint, the Virgin of Mercy. Nostra Senyora de la Mercè, whose image lies in the church of the same name on Plaça de la Mercè, was named co-patron after she singlehandedly beat off a plague of locusts in 1637! Then in 1714, as Barcelona faced defeat in the War of the Spanish Succession, the obviously desperate town elders appointed her commander in chief of the city’s defences. Galway Oyster Festival Location: Nimmo’s Pier, Galway City, County Galway, Ireland Dates: last full weekend in September The Galway Oyster Festival is dedicated to Ostrea edulis, the European flat oyster. The local molluscs are left to grow for three years in the clean waters of Brandon Bay and Clarenbridge, blooming into a juicy delicacy. Tens of thousands of the slippery critters are consumed on the Guinness Oyster Trail, on which 30 pubs give out free trays of the seafood with pints of the dark stuff.
Farm Aid Location: varies each year around the USA Date: one day in September The longest-running series of benefit concerts in America, Farm Aid grew out of a comment made by the Bob Dylan at the Live Aid concert in Philadelphia. Suggesting it would be great if the musical community could help America’s struggling family farms as well, Dylan inspired Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp to organise an event. Atlantic Antic Location: Brooklyn, New York City, USA Dates: last weekend in September This street party is one of the Big Apple’s best festivals, but remains a well-kept secret. There’s oodles of food to sample and music to hear at the celebration of Brooklyn’s multiculturalism, which transforms Atlantic Ave into a 2.5km bazaar. A five-minute walk might take in an R&B band in pastel suits, a banjo-plucking bluegrass band, a modish alt-rock act, and a Greek folk troupe complete with belly dancers. Hermanus Whale Festival Location: Hermanus, Western Cape, South Africa Dates: last week in September Situated near Africa’s southernmost tip, Hermanus has a front-row view of the Cape Whale Route. During migrating season, people flock to the clifftops to glimpse the endangered southern right whale. Given that it overlooks Walker Bay, into which 70 whales have squeezed, the town once took its blubber-related fortune for granted. In an attempt to formalise the clifftop viewing, it started its festival and introduced the Whale Crier. The world’s only such crier, his blasts on the kelp horn are coded to direct eager cetaceanspotters.

A SPECIAL KIND OF CARING... ADDING LIFE TO DAY
L
ast month I joined a group of CUDECA volunteers on a trip to visit the hospice care premises in Benalmรกdena. The visit was organised by Cindy Jones, our local fundraiser extraordinaire. Many of us help raise funds and give generously to this deserving charity, and I am sure we all know that it provides end of life hospice care for cancer sufferers. But I expect many people who are familiar with the title CUDECA, and perhaps know that the name is derived from the Spanish words "cuidador del cรกncer" (cancer care), may not be aware of just how far reaching is the care given to cancer sufferers by CUDECA. Our group of about twenty women and men, volunteers and fundraisers from inland and from the coast were welcomed to the facility by Susan Hannam, Vice President and member of the organisation since its inception in 1991. The idea for the hospice was originally conceived by Joan Hunt, after her husband died of this dreadful disease. Joan organised a group from her local community of volunteers and health professionals which began fundraising events, and by the following year the organisation had been officially registered, had opened its first charity shop and
76 The Grapevine
had cared for the first eight patients. CUDECA grew year by year and by 1995 had opened its sixth charity shop, appointed its first professional medical home care team, employed the first administrative staff, treated 152 patients and had received a gift of 5,000 m2 of land from Benalmรกdena. Years 1996 - 2000 saw the planning and commencement of construction of the hospice facility, treatment of a further 1,300 patients, the opening of a further two shops and the appointment of a second medical home care team. Over the following five years the construction of the hospice facility was completed, an out-patient clinic opened, the in-patient unit was completed and furnished, the tenth charity shop opened, and Joan Hunt was awarded an OBE, amongst many other honours. The last ten from years 2006 have seen steady growth of the charity, which now provides... Five mobile medical teams. Inpatient unit with nine private bedrooms with facilities for family members to stay overnight. Medical staff on duty 24 hours per day. Psychosocial department with psychologist and social worker to support families. Day care centre two days per week.
Local support groups. New day centre planned for Torre del Mar. Over 10,000 patients have been treated, 80% are Spanish and most of the remaining 20% are British. Patients are normally referred by a hospital or a GP, but patients can contact the charity directly. CUDECA provides a lot of training in palliative care for doctors, nurses and psychologists. Palliative care in Spain has developed a great deal in recent years, but CUDECA remains the only independent hospice in the country. Unfortunately I only have sufficient space in this edition to just touch upon the amazing work of this very special organisation. Hopefully the editor might allocate more room next month to expand upon this article. In the meantime a huge thank you to all the readers of this magazine who have given so generously to CUDECA hospice care.

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Blowing in the Wind
A
ugust for me is holiday time; a time when gardens, gardeners and the garden centre close down! So I´m writing this from Cádiz province with its wild Atlantic coast. The Levante wind is blowing, sandblasting skin and plants alike so it seemed like a good time to look at windresistant plants in preparation for those winter blows back home! As all us campo people know, it´s not only on the coastlines that the wind can blow and it is the harsh scorching winds that burn plants up, literally desiccating them.
when seen en masse. The promenades still have their marches of palms, though somewhat reduced by the beetle, but peering into gardens gives a greater variation of plants. Most importantly for any windy spot are trees, not only for summer shade but to break the force of the wind and supply shelter for the more tender – plants and humans! Building up a windbreak is imperative; trees, then shrubs for density and then more special plants. If space is tight, or in the short term, some sort of windbreak material, such as split cane to filter the wind, will make a huge difference.
Of course, along this windswept coastline the predominant tree is the Mediterranean pine fringing all the sand dunes and looking like mounds of green cumulus clouds
Many humans cannot tolerate the wind; windy areas often have high suicide rates – the wind can, literally, drive people mad. Many plants have adapted much better
84 The Grapevine
to turbulent lives. Trees send out roots in the opposite direction to the prevailing wind to better anchor themselves; grasses sway and dance, large-leaved plants, such as bananas, allow their leaves to shred, fluttering like torn pennants, to offer less resistance and tiny ground-cover plants prostrate themselves on the ground. When a plant is young, high winds will loosen its root system, break fragile stems and scorch foliage so it might be best to erect some sort of barrier for their first year in your garden. In any case, do not apply high nitrogen feeds as this induces lots of soft lush foliage which will suffer more. Make them grow hard; learn not to pamper them. One of my greatest surprises

here has been to see how well that old sea dog, myoporum laetum or transparante looks. It twists and gnarls with the wind, flinging out its branches like streaming green hair and looks a lot more characterful than we ever give it credit for. Too often in our gardens, it's just a green blob, a cheap and easy-care hedging plant but nothing to get excited about. As a plus the chameleons here seem to love it too, something I've not noticed back home. Other trees constantly seen, and perhaps predictably, are the statuesque Norfolk Island pines, or araucarias, well accustomed to coastal gales on their homeland. Lagunaria patersonii, better known as the Norfolk Island hibiscus has leathery olive-green leaves which will also stand up to these tough conditions well. It's a neat conical tree with pretty pink bell-shaped flowers but beware of the lining to the seed cases which is extremely irritant leading to its common Spanish name of the pica-pica tree. Mulberries are also commonly seen, obviously an introduction from the times of the Moorish invasion, but, being such large-leafed trees you wouldn't expect them to be too happy in strong winds yet they look perfectly at home. And, of course, the wonderfully grey wizened look of the cupressus Arizonica or Arizona cypress adds character to any windswept landscape. For shrubs, oleanders are wonderful, as always, and two other shrubs, that are no surprise to me, are seen a lot – atriplex canescens, well-named the saltbush and teucrium fruticans or wall germander. Both bear small silver-grey leaves and are well known for their resilience to harsh/salty conditions. I've seen the teucrium growing as an informal billowing small hedge, covered in its pale-denim coloured edging. It's pale, washed-out looks

Other suitable aromatics would be lavandula, santolina, artemisia and helichrysum.
