Editors Note... As we come into September, school starts for the primary kids on the 12th and secondary school on the 15th. This year my kids have had a great summer and have been more independent than recent years, which has meant I’m not actually looking forward to them going back to school and the respite that it previously brought!

The man, whose identity has not been revealed, “told officers he accidentally provoked the blaze when he defecated ... and set fire to the toilet paper he used for that,” police added. The man has been accused of causing a forest fire through negligence and was expected to be questioned by a judge.

NEWS IN SPAIN This months update

S

ky is secretly preparing a major expansion of its European empire by launching its online streaming service Now TV in Spain as the first stage of a plan to challenge Netflix and Amazon across the continent. For more than a year, a team at the pay-TV giant have been laying the groundwork for its first move into territories where it has no satellite operation. If the launch is a success, it is understood that Sky will then target other untapped European territories for Now TV expansion. Now TV is expected to be offered to Spanish households for €10 per month, positioning Sky alongside Netflix as a low-cost way for consumers to boost their entertainment options.

F

aced with the stress and inconvenience of missing a flight, most people would throw themselves on the mercy of their airline or seek solace in the airport bar. Not so one traveller, who decided he had to be on the aeroplane from Madrid to the Canary Islands last month. A video, shot by airport workers and posted on Facebook, shows

8 The Grapevine

the unidentified man clutching his bags and jumping off an air bridge – the extendable corridor that connects airport departure gates with plane doors – and on to the asphalt of Barajas airport in the hope of reaching his plane in time. This is how passengers in Madrid behave when they don’t arrive in time to catch their planes,” read the post. “This particular passenger missed his Ryanair flight and, however incredible it may seem, got through the different security procedures that [Spain’s airport authority] Aena has in place at its airports.”

park ranger died while fighting a blaze in the Canary Islands allegedly started by a German man who set fire to toilet paper after defecating in the woods, authorities have said. Seven hundred people have been evacuated from a wooded, mountainous area in La Palma, an island in the Spanish archipelago off the coast of Africa. Francisco José Santana died while working to put out the flames, according to Spain’s UGT union, of which the 54-year-old was a member. “He leaves a wife and five children,” a spokesperson added. ccording to figures for this year, the country’s ports are set to break all records for passenger and goods traffic. If the first half of this year’s performance is repeated in the second six months of 2016, more than 513 million tons of goods will have passed through the 46 ports run by State Ports, which operates under the auspices of the Public Works Ministry, according to data published. More than 30 million passengers have also used these installations, where close to 140,000 ships dock each year. The overall improvement of the Spanish economy, coupled with the consolidation of Spain as a strategic logistics hub, are driving growth.

F

ew people realize that Spain is the second-biggest poppy producer in the world, growing as much as 13,000 hectares a year. Only Australia accounts for more. And though the legal opium business is expanding due to rising global demand for painkillers, it remains shrouded in secrecy. In Spain, just one government-approved company controls the entire production process – from sowing to exporting the final product. The clandestine nature of the business is such that the location of the fields must be kept under wraps while high security is essential. If a farmer wants to plant opium for the company, they have to get permission to do so from the Agriculture Ministry.

people who have pets. Their findings show that pet owners exhibit decreased blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, all of which can ultimately minimize their risk for having a heart attack. For those who have already experienced a heart attack, research also indicates that patients with a dog or a cat tend to have better recovery rates. These benefits are thought to be connected with pets' tendency to help reduce their owners' overall stress levels.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS Owning a Pet Might be Just What The Doctor Ordered!

A

t Action for Animals we're often asking via Grapevine and our Facebook page for your help to adopt abandoned animals. If you're in two minds about the benefits of adopting a pet, this month's article might just persuade you! Because when it comes to pet ownership, there are a number of proven health benefits for people, including physical, mental and emotional improvements, from enhancing social skills to decreasing a person's risk of heart attack. Owning a pet might even help you meet people! Read on...

Allergy fighters A growing number of studies have suggested that children growing up in a home with animals, will have less risk of allergies and asthma. University of WisconsinMadison paediatrician James E. Gern has conducted a number

14 The Grapevine

of studies that demonstrate having a pet in the home can actually lower a child's likelihood of developing related allergies by as much as 33 percent. In fact, his research shows that children exposed early on to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall, suggesting that babies who have greater exposure to dirt and allergens have a stronger immune system. Icebreakers Pets provide a great way to improve your social skills, especially in terms of meeting and interacting with other pet owners. Animals can be an instant icebreaker, whether they're with you or you're just using them as a topic of conversation. If you have a hard time getting to know people, having a pet can be the common denominator that helps you connect with others. Good for the heart The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) have both conducted heart-related studies on

Good for body and soul Dogs can act as the perfect personal trainer, if only because most of them need to be walked several times a day. Studies show that regularly walking your dog can help you lose, or at least maintain weight. One study of more than 2,000 adults, found that dog owners who walked their pets were less likely to be obese than those who don't own dogs at all. Pets are also a great way to beat the blues. Not only do they offer unconditional love, but they may also give their owners a sense of purpose, which can be crucial for anyone feeling down in the dumps. They can combat feelings of loneliness by providing companionship, which can boost your overall mood and even bring you feelings of joy and happiness. Stay healthy and happy – adopt a pet! CAR REPAIR: KNOW YOUR FLUIDS Keep your vehicle longer from costly repairs

C

ar repairs are important to the upkeep of your vehicle. The various fluids used in a vehicle are essential to keeping each piece of machinery working properly, and extending the life of the vehicle. Keeping track of the fluid levels, and checking for leaks is a good preventative method for taking care of a car and preventing expensive car repairs later. Car repairs are important to the upkeep of your vehicle. There are about six different vehicle components that use some type of fluid, and each of these fluids should be checked periodically. Sometimes there may be a slow leak, which can cause problems further along if anything has leaked out of the system.Oil is used as a lubricant for the inside of the engine. It is essential because it keeps the metal parts of the engine lubricated and clean, so it is important to keep the oil fresh and replenished. On most cars, oil changes should be scheduled every 5,000 miles, however, the vehicle owner can

16 The Grapevine

check the oil level, and its color by simply taking a look at the dipstick at any time. The oil dipstick is a direct line to the oil reservoir, it is marked with the appropriate level, and the oil should fall within those areas; the lubricant may need to be replenished if it falls below the indicator marks. It is best to check the oil levels while the car is cool to avoid a false reading. While the engine is cool, it is also good to check the antifreeze; antifreeze circulates through the cooling system and keeps the engine from freezing or overheating. Checking the antifreeze is as simple as looking at the reservoir, which sits next to the radiator. The hydraulic fluids for the brakes and steering wheel also come in a reservoir underneath the hood, however, they can be checked while the engine is hot or cold. Brake fluid levels should never change, it is simply used as a hydraulic to transfer energy to the brakes; have an auto technician check for leaks if the

reservoir is low. Power steering fluid transfers power through the steering lines, and should be refilled if the steering wheel becomes difficult to turn; a low reservoir will eventually do major damage to the steering. The reservoir is also located under the hood, and is clearly marked with the appropriate levels for a hot or cold engine. The transmission fluid should only be checked if the engine is running. Similar to oil, a dipstick goes directly to the transmission reservoir; it is also marked for the appropriate fluid levels. Maintaining proper fluid levels is a simple task that can prevent major car repairs. Checking a vehicle's fluids often can help keep its systems in top working order, and if these fluids need frequent refillsFree Reprint Articles, check with a mechanic to be sure there are no leaks. Leaky hoses can cause major damage and car repairs. Anna Woodward

In order to have lost this weight you must have been burning more calories than you were eating therefore you can afford to ease off a little without putting any weight back on. For many, who don't like exercise, it would be the gym workouts that they found grueling and miserable, now that in itself isn't too bad as long as you have a replacement that will be able to burn enough calories for you to be able to maintain your weight; and walking is ideal for this.

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR WEIGHT . LOSS BY WALKING

L

osing weight is relatively easy compared to keeping it off as I am sure you are aware, but the simplest of exercises can be instrumental in achieving just that. This article highlights the benefits of walking to maintaining a healthy weight and is a must read for anyone serious about keeping their new found figure. Well done, you've successfully managed to lose the weight you wanted to. It was a battle but you got there in the end, but the biggest battle is yet to come. How do you maintain your weight loss? Most of the people I know are ecstatic when they have lost a few pounds and are impossible to upset when they have achieved their target weight, yet these same people, less than a month later, are more miserable than ever because the weight they fought so hard to lose has reappeared with a vengeance, often with an extra pound or two to boot! Why? Resorting back to the old lifestyle is the culprit.

18 The Grapevine

The battle for weight loss is fought on two fronts; diet and exercise. What happens when someone reaches their weight loss goal is that they stop their diet and exercise programs that they reached that goal with and resort back to their old lifestyle and diet. Needless to say this old lifestyle and diet is the very same that made them overweight in the first place! Why people think that once they have lost weight they can revisit their previous lifestyles and the weight will stay off is beyond my comprehension but millions of yo-yo dieters do just that, and then complain that they can't lose weight effectively. The trouble is people enjoy their lifestyles and want to be slim also; something has to give and the constant indecision is what leads to the yo-yo effect. Peoples’ misconceptions about losing weight is that once they have lost it they can stop the diet and the exercise, the truth of the matter is that to maintain your weight you now have to find the right balance between calorie intake and calorie usage.

Here are three things to consider before taking up walking: 1. Always consult with your doctor. You may well feel perfectly fit and healthy but as a precautionary measure always check with your doctor, he may be able to advise you on a good structured schedule that you will be able to follow. 2. Get yourself a pedometer. A pedometer is a device that counts the number of steps you have taken and then will calculate the distance you have walked, a brilliant little piece of equipment, and really cheap as well. But don't go setting yourself a minimum distance to walk, look to set yourself walking goals and targets extending them as you become fitter and fitter. You never know, you might actually start to lose even more weight! 3. Wear the right attire. Once committed to walking for weight management ensure you are always as comfortable as possible by wearing comfortable shoes and clothing, a pair of ill fitting shoes or clothing that causes discomfort are the most likely reasons why people give up walking as a health activity. Jose himself is personable, approachable and highly educated, he is Spanish but with exceptional English. Jose gained his law degree in Malaga and then went on to do a MA in Business administration. Jose learnt learnt his English from an English Academy in Malaga which had a native teacher and he also spent two summers living in Hamersmith with an English family. Other languages are covered by Axarquia Solicitors such as German, Russian, Dutch and Flemish.

AN INTERVIEW WITH AXARQUIA SOLICITORS

.An Interview with Jose Manuel Garzon, Senior Partner

A

xarquia solicitors is part of Marbella Solicitors Group which is a LAW OFFICE who have been assisting expats in the sale and purchase of houses, amongst other legal services, on the Costa del Sol for more than 15yrs. The Grapevine met with Jose Manuel Garzon senior partner based in the Axarquia offices in Velez Malaga. The offices are easy to find and parking is available very nearby. Melanie, Jose’s assistant was my initial contact who is efficient and easy to deal with, responding to emails exceptionally quickly. She also sends out directions to the offices if you are in any doubt of the location. This important group of Law Offices has 6 locations along the Costa del Sol. Marbella was the first office that opened 15 years ago and then offices in Manilva, Nerja, Calahonda

24 The Grapevine

(Mijas-Costa), Malaga capital and Velez Malaga followed. The Velez Malaga office opened in order to give their clients based in Axarquia region a better service as they were travelling to Nerja or Malaga for appointments. However, with the new office opening in January 2015 they have taken on more new clients in the area as well as providing a better service to the existing ones. The professional services they provide are conveyancing, all legal & tax issues, inheritance, wills and property. They focus on providing expats exceptional service in their own language. The first consultation is always free and they promise to reply to emails in 24 hours. Their list of legal fees is fixed and open, very competitive and always includes 21 % IVA which means a good saving for their clients. Fees are always agreed in advance and invoiced on completion.

Jose believes now is a great time to buy as prices are still reasonable and properties will most certainly increase in value and thus the return expected makes them great investment opportunities. 70 % of their clients use them for buying and selling and a further 30% for tax issues and other services. Many of their clients use them in conveyancing and then continue to use them for other issues that arise thereafter. Jose believes that Axarquia Solicitors are honest, have integrity and provide services with confidentiality and discretion along with exceptional customer service so this is why expats and non residents have trusted them for over 15 years. If you would like to get in touch with Jose at the Axarquia office in Velez Malaga call 952 901 225 and see advert opposite.

FROM FANTASY TO REALITY Artist Jo Dennison displays a Retrospective Exhibition

F

rom the 26th of September to October 14th the English Textile Artist Jo Dennison will be having a Retrospective Exhibition in the Salon de Actos del Ayuntamiento Competa. This is a unique opportunity to view the work of an textile artist and to meet her personally, since she will be present every day during the 3 weeks exhibition in the salon below the town hall.

on her own work. Andalucia had a richness of tradition, history and culture that attracted her. First she lived in a finca at the 'campo'. Later on she moved to a village house with a very large workshop in the pueblo 10 years ago. Over 20 years many more artists have come to live in this area in and around Cómpeta. Many have shared exhibitions from Marbella to Salobreña. Jo only considered a solo exhibition when asked by Cómpeta Ayuntamiento.

Jo Dennison was born in 1936 in the Midlands in England leaving there for the south when she was 22. From childhood she had always drawn and painted, made puppets and costumes, read fables, legends and folk stories. She trained as a teacher receiving Distinctions in Art and Literature. She has always been curious about the lives of artists, the way their work changed over the years, the courage of many in experimenting and producing work that challenged the traditional. Jo retired early from teaching in order to concentrate

Her Art Works are designed to hang on a wall, some are very large, all have a story to tell. Her work is inspired by literature, world affairs, fantasy. Her textile works are always pictorial. One piece, took her a year to complete, the others 6 or 3 months. Large hangings have to be made in several parts. The initial design is enlarged and often roughly painted on paper to emphasize color and movement. Colored fabrics of many kinds from cotton to velvet are selected, they are blended with

26 The Grapevine

both hand and machine embroidery, no adhesive is used. Usually small in size these are patched together to give variety of color and texture. Organzas and nets are used to give transparency and gleams of light. This part of the preparation can take many hours before stitching even begins. There can be many subtle changes to the initial design, this makes for creativity tot the last stitch. The colors are vibrant, many have a movement you feel as you put your finger tips on the fabric. She will dye fabrics in multi-colours to have a regular supply of different tones. Texture is very important. She collects scraps of all sorts fabrics and patch them together and mixes velvets, cottons, sacking, string, wools, canvas-whatever feels right. At this stage the Workshop becomes very untidychaotic to an observer. She has to work flat on a large work table and it is important to hang it upright to check the impact of the work. Trying to work about 20 hours weekly Jo prefers a Monday to Friday routine in her workshop. In order to establish calm out of what could be chaos. Jo is never satisfied with a work when it is finished. Then perhaps after 3 months she looks at it with fresh eyes and thinks ´it is not so bad after all'. Her recent work is affected by world events and social problems. At first this worried her, she felt she should produce work to lighten the heart of the viewer but if she ordered herself to do that she would lose her creativity. Curiosity and creativity, the urge to experiment, not to be afraid of failure but to learn from it. Competa is a beautiful white washed mountain village, and always worthwhile a visit. The Exhibition is open Monday to Friday from 11a.m. to 2p.m. Jo expects to be there most mornings and working. www.jodennison.net

KEEP YOUR SKIN LOOKING GREAT Invest some time and care!

E

veryone wants to have younger looking skin. Unfortunately, even the most expensive skin care products, with all their claims of 'reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles', can't turn back the years. However, don't despair! There are steps that we can all take to make sure our skin looks healthy and vibrant and stays wrinklefree for longer. All we've got to do is invest some time and care in looking after it.

from potential invasion of microbes and generate new skin cells which move from the deep layer of the epidermis to the outer layer, where they are eventually shed.

It is important to understand the basic function of our skin in order to look after it properly. The skin is our body’s largest organ and comprises three major layers:

The Subcutaneous layer: This layer consists of areolar and adipose tissue. Fibres from the dermis extend down into the subcutaneous layer and anchor the skin to it. The subcutaneous layer, in turn, attaches to underlying tissues and organs.

The Epidermis: This layer has five sub-layers; the outer layer consists of mainly dead cells which are continuously shed and replaced by cells beneath. The epidermis is also responsible for ‘water proofing’ your skin, protecting your skin

60 The Grapevine

The Dermis: Is the ‘middle layer of the skin and is composed of connective tissue containing collagen and elastin. The dermis is thick in the palms and soles and very thin in the eyelids. It contains blood vessels, nerves, glands, and hair follicles.

Aging of the skin There are several factors influencing how quickly our skin ages, ranging from genetic

factors, your natural skin type, as well as external factors such as exposure to sunlight, environmental factors and whether you smoke or not. In general, pale skins wrinkle faster than darker skins, which are protected by increased amounts of pigment and lipids. Another vital factor is, of course, our age. Our skin looks and functions very differently at 20 as opposed to when we are 60. Below is a skin care plan of how to look after your skin as the decades go by and how to adapt your skin care regime accordingly. Looking after your skin in your 20s Your 20s is a great time for your skin. You've left behind the adolescence acne and your skin has a radiant, youthful glow and the epidermis is well toned. However, this is not the time to be complacent. In your 20s skin cell renewal drops by up to 28 per cent, dead skin cells are not as

To advertise call 637 028 873

easily shed and external factors are starting to have a greater impact, leaving your skin slightly duller. According to dermatologists, 80 per cent of all aging can be directly related to exposure to sunlight. Therefore, it is a good idea to avoid the mid-day sun, or if you have to be out in the heat of the day (especially in countries like Australia), than cover up. Penetrating UVA rays will start to damage collagen fibres and elastin coils in your skin. Smoking one factor you can control and now would be a good time to quite. Smoking inhibits oxygen getting to the outer layer of your skin and has a premature aging effect. In addition, smoking can cause fine lines around the mouth over the years and this is to be avoided – if you want to keep your good looks. Looking after your skin in your 30s By the time you get to your 30s skin cell turnover has slowed. Environmental damage from pollution, smoke and sunlight are starting to take their toll on the dermis, causing collagen fibres to loosen so that skin starts to loose its tone and develop fine lines and wrinkles. When you smile, subcutaneous fat forms ridges and refuse to bounce back as readily as it once did. Your first wrinkles may start to appear. By now you should have established a daily skincare regime that involves exfoliating (two or three times a week), cleansing, moisturising and sun protection for your skin. In your 30s, it's important to maintain a balanced diet consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and fish, which are high in antioxidants such as Vitamins A, B, C and E. These Vitamins counteract free radicals in your body that help the skin to repair itself, produce the enzymes that

To advertise call 637 028 873 60

stabilise collagen production, and stay moist and healthy. For further protection, try using a day crème, such as one that contains vitamin E, for example: Wildcrafted’s Age Defying Essence. Alcohol should only be consumed in moderation as it deprives your skin of vital nutrients and may cause your facial blood vessels to become dilated leading to permanent, red ‘spider veins’ on your cheeks and in men often across the nose. Maintaining well hydrated tissues by drinking plenty of water each and every day (3 litres a day is not at all excessive) is vital to retain moisture in your skin. In addition, you should ensure that you get enough quality sleep. Looking after your skin in your 40s In your 40s, collagen fibres decrease in number, stiffen, break apart, and form into a shapeless, matted tangle. Elastic fibres lose some of their elasticity, thicken into clumps, and fray. The result is the skin forms crevices and furrows known as lines and wrinkles. In addition, loss of fat in the subcutaneous layer leaves your skin more fragile, whereas the dermis will continue to lose its elasticity. A rich nourishing night crème, such as Wildcrafted’s rejuvenating night crème, becomes a vital part of your skin care regime. During this time the stratum corneum (the outer layer of the epidermis) starts to grow even thicker, as dead skin cells hang around for longer. If you are not already using an exfoliant regularly, now is a good time to get into the habit of exfoliating your skin regularly using a facial scrub – 2-3 times a week is all that’s necessary. You could also use a cream containing Rose oil, Jojoba oil or similar, as these contain natural AHA’s (alpha

hydroxy acids) and to help remove dead skin cells. As deeper wrinkles start to form, you may wish to use a complete skin care system, which systematically helps you to nourish and moisturise your skin on all levels. Choose natural skin care products for your daily skin care regime, as you do not want to introduce unnecessary toxins into your system by using products full of unpronounceable chemicals. Quality natural skin care systems, such as Wildcrafted’s range of natural skin care systems should be matched to your specific skin type. Looking after your skin in your 50s and above As we reach our 50s and beyond, the hair and nails grow more slowly. Langerhans cells (involved in the immune response, dwindle in number, thus decreasing the immune responsiveness of older skin. Decreased size of sebaceous (oil) glands leads to dry and broken skin that is more susceptible to infection. In women, after the menopause, decreased oestrogen levels mean that skin lose its plumpness and tone, and it may be left dry, itchy and more sensitive to allergens. At this stage in your life it is important to take that extra care of your skin’s health. Mature skin is more fragile, prone to injury and infection and bruises easily. As if this was not bad enough, it also takes longer to heal. Taking care of your skin will reduce the aging effect; keep it healthier as well as more resistant to injury and infections. Remember a face that has a lived in look is much more attractive than a Botox face and character is much more beauty. Source: ArticlesFactory.com

NEVER LEAVE YOUR PETS IN A PARKED CAR Your pet may suffer irreversible organ damage or die.

I

t is important to consider the humidity so - Never Leave Your Pets in a Parked Car - not even for a minute. Not even with the car running and air conditioner on. On a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. On an 85degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. Your pet may suffer irreversible organ damage or die. and not just the ambient temperature. Animals pant to evaporate moisture from their

lungs, which takes heat away from their body. If the humidity is too high, they are unable to cool themselves, and their temperature will skyrocket to dangerous levelsvery quickly. So in areas with high humidity always consider this when deciding if your pet can go for a ride with you or not. Take care when exercising your pet. Adjust intensity and duration of exercise in accordance with the temperature. On very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours, and be especially careful with pets with whitecolored ears, who are more susceptible to skin cancer, and short-nosed pets, who typically have difficulty breathing. Asphalt gets very hot and can burn your

pet's paws, so walk your dog on the grass if possible. Always carry water with you to keep your dog from dehydrating Pets respond differently to heat than humans do. (Dogs, for instance, sweat primarily through their feet.) So don't rely on fans they don't cool off pets as effectively as they do people. Any time your pet is outside, make sure he or she has protection from heat and sun and plenty of fresh, cold water. In heat waves, add ice to water when possible. Tree shade and tarps are ideal because they don't obstruct air flow. A doghouse does not provide relief from heat-in fact, it makes it worse. Always make sure your pet has a place to get out of the sun either under a tree or under a tarp covered area to make sure they don't get overheated.or other signs of robbery. Linda Goguen

MOVING TO SPAIN AND SURVIVING! Some Practical and Realistic Advice.

S

pain is one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations; furthermore the attraction of Spain’s climate, culture, beauty, cost and standard of living attracts record numbers of expatriates to relocate to its shores every year and the country already has an estimated 1.5 million foreign residents in situ. But there’s a darker side to moving abroad that few people ever consider – did you know that last year 191,000 people relocated overseas from the UK and 105,000 Britons also returned to the UK last year having failed to establish their new life overseas? Some people simply fail to survive a move overseas and it certainly isn’t a case of “no going back” for the thousands of disillusioned people who flock ‘home’ to their mother country year after year…therefore if you’re thinking of moving to Spain you need to understand the main reasons people cite

64 The Grapevine

when they return. By understanding these reasons you will avoid the pitfalls and pain and succeed where others may fail thereby fulfilling your dreams of a new life in Spain.

people right now but you never know what tomorrow will bring and how are you going to feel if you can’t get back to visit, or if the important people in your life can’t afford to visit you?

The Practicality of Your Location

Spain is very well serviced by airports and cheap airlines, it has one of the cheapest rail networks in the whole of Europe and the Spanish government spends millions each year on the travel and transport infrastructure so wherever you choose to locate you should never be so far away from decent transportation. But do bear this point in mind as ‘homesickness’ and ‘inaccessibility’ are some of the main reasons people cite when they give up on their dream of a new life abroad.

You need to make sure that you choose the very best location in Spain to fulfil your practical needs on a day to day basis. Consider the accessibility of a location for family and friends to visit you and for you to reach a doctor, the supermarket, a school or even a hairdresser. Find your perfect location, location, location by visiting the areas you’re interested in and considering them thoroughly from the point of view of how easy and practical your day to day life there will be. Accessibility & Homesickness Wherever you choose to live, consider the accessibility of the location with your old home country in mind. Sure, you may be sick of the sight of certain

Being Accepted The first two years in any new country are by far the hardest…it takes this amount of time to build up enough knowledge of the local areas, customs, people and language to make your new house feel like ‘home’.

To advertise call 637 028 873

It also takes a significant investment and effort on your part to find true acceptance and getting to the stage where you really feel you ‘belong’ in your Spanish community will take time, effort and above all perseverance. Expectation versus Reality Moving abroad won’t necessarily ‘fix’ your life - if you do move abroad you won’t escape your history, you won’t escape who you are, you won’t escape all of the day to day grind and you may not always improve your quality of life! So make sure you have realistic expectations of your new life in Spain before you go and know that living in Spain will be very different to holidaying in Spain. YES your new life abroad can offer you so much more …but just make sure your expectations can match the reality and remember the saying – life isn’t necessarily a beach just because you live beside one!

To advertise call 637 028 873

Health & Wellbeing One of the saddest reasons people cite when giving up their dream of a new life abroad is health and wellbeing. The trap is the price, availability and quality of health care in their ‘new’ country. Please look at the local Spanish health care facilities, think about long term and respite care, consider health insurance for all your family and basically don’t bury your head in the sand! If you consider the worst case scenario and protect yourself against it, chances are you will be prepared for everything and will financially survive. Last But Not Least - Money THE most common reasons for people returning ‘home’ with their dreams shattered is that they simply run out of money. If you’re moving to Spain and hoping to find work you need to know that unemployment in the country is way above the EU average, if you don’t speak Spanish you’ll struggle and some

of your qualifications may not be recognised in Spain. If you’re considering downsizing when you move to Spain it can be more than just a shock to the system to leave a well paying job to become a pool cleaner. If you’ve sold up and released equity to live on have you honestly thought about how long you can practically live on this amount? What about affording your retirement years, trips back to your home country, health care, transportation and the unexpected costs that spring up when we least expect them? There are ways to afford to live on less and there are ways to make what you have go far further. The bottom line is - to survive in Spain you simply MUST consider your financial position before you make ANY move. Good luck in realising and securing your dream. Rhiannon Williamson

increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.

Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es

Stipa gigantea

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH The Golden Grasses of Summer.

A

s summer days start to mellow just a little, there are probably no group of plants that reflect this better than the grasses. They glow and glint through the lower rays of the sun turning our gardens into magical places as if touched by fairy's golden paintbrush! Some of the best are the wonderful stipa family. There are around 300 of them so let´s take a closer look at stipa gigantea and stipa tenuissima, two of the best. The name 'stipa' is derived from the Greek 'stuppeion' meaning fibre – stipa tenacissima gives us the well-known and much utilised esparto grass. Stipa gigantea, golden oat grass or giant feather grass is the golden giant of the grasses and we are very lucky to be able to grow it so effortlessly. You will see it all around us as it is a native of southern Spain, Portugal and northern Morocco.

84 The Grapevine

It thrives in the sharply-drained stony soil of our scrub-covered hillsides yet we use it little in our gardens. Pity, because with just a minimum of care it can look magnificent. Those thin narrow leaves mean that the plant loses little moisture through transpiration so is a true survivor; wild winds just pass through it – better, it whirls wildly to the battering and buffeting and sways and shimmers in a light breeze. Deep green foliage erupts into a sheaf of oat-like flowers held high on 2.5m light green stems during May and June. The panicles start an unusual purple-green colour, gradually developing into the rich old gold that we are more familiar with. This is, probably when it is at its best, its moment of golden glory. With a low evening sun backlighting the entire plant, it really does glow. As summer advances and the seeds are spread, you might expect it to start looking a little tired but the

golden oat grass is tougher than that. Right through autumn and into early winter it carries on glowing, changing hue with every nuance of the sun. On those very rare occasions that we get a touch of early morning frost, the entire plant is white-edged. In spite of being so tall, it never overpowers because of its lightness and transparency. Try using it singly or in groups of three, it is more eye-catching that way rather than bulked. Plants can be lifted and divided every three years or so in early spring. Stipa tenuissima, Mexican feather grass or silky thread grass is a much smaller relative but equally stunning with its delicate yet dramatic looks. It has bright green filament-fine leaves that tumble and spill like a fountain, maturing to a bleachedout blonde colour. Its whiskery, soft and silky tawny panicles are a delight throughout the summer months. This American native forms clumps which will reach a

maximum of 0.60m x 0.60m. Use it as soft and swirling ground cover under taller plantings. Again, it is tough, becomes very drought resistant and with its elegant good-looks makes a great softening plant to hard architectural plantings like palms and yuccas and mellows hard edgings of paving, gravel etc. These two stipas should be planted in full sun and they are perfectly happy in poor and welldrained soil. Try and select a position where low sunshine can highlight their beauty; they both have a long good-looking season. Do not spoil and pamper them too much, they´ll likely die on you if you do! Maintenance is straight forward; simply cut the plants hard in early springtime – as simple as that! Whilst this pruning can be done during winter, it's nice to leave the spent flower plumes for the seed-loving birds and for the lovely patterns created by low winter sunshine. Alternately, the dried flower

heads can be used in flower arrangements, simple wreaths etc. The easiest method of pruning is to tie up each clump with a piece of string and then cut with a pair of garden shears or a hedge trimmer. The cut bundle can then be disposed of easily. Their slightly tatty overcoat will soon be replaced by bright green fresh foliage. These two grasses are also fairly invincible to pests and disease, rarely suffering with any problems though overwatering can make them rot. We have both of these grasses in stock at the garden centre along with many other drought-resistant plantings – come and ask us for our advice! Axarquia towns fear they may lose 5,000 foreign residents from their books this year, with disastrous consequences to council resources.A revision of the municipal registers set for March 31 will mean that expats who have not renewed their town hall registration – padron – in the last two years will be left out. This could cause significant losses to public funds and resources, including a reduction in the number of councillors.
