This month Competa holds its annual walking festival. The walks start on the 27th and finish on the 30th. New walks are entered into the program every year, so if you participated last year there will be different walks to explore! It is suitable for all levels of walkers as there are 2 types of walks to choose from on each day to suit different levels of fitness and ability. It is a fantastic way to see the local area and meet some new people. See pages 54 and 55 for more details on how to enroll. A bit earlier in the month is the Noche del Lumbres in Competa starting at 9.00pm in Plaza del Carmen with live music and a bonfire. Also, in September we mustn't forget the worlds biggest coffee morning held on 28th September which raises money for Macmillan Cancer Support, see page 86. Looking forward, there are more exciting events near you. The village of Frigiliana holds its 2nd Art Walk from the 5th to the 7th October, see pages 56 and 57. It was a great success last year so this year there are more artists, locations and activities, its definitely not to be missed. On the 7th October Canillas de Albaida hosts its annual Multicultural Concert which also promises to be an exciting event with a mixture of music from different bands throughout the evening. If you are holding an event don't forgot to get in contact with The Grapevine so we can help promote it.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS
Opens a New Office in Malaga
T
his month I interviewed Jose Manuel Garzon Macho of Marbella Solicitors Group (Law offices) he is the senior partner at the Axarquia office located in Velez Malaga. Marbella Solicitors has 7 offices with Malaga being the latest addition. Marbella was their first office that they opened, hence their overall group name and then the other offices in Mijas, Manilva, Axarquia, Nerja, Madrid and most recently Malaga followed.
I met with Jose Manuel at the new Malaga office which is now their head office. Jose works at the Axarquia office in the mornings for meetings with clients and then returns to the Malaga office for the afternoon to follow up client's requests, research and paperwork. The new office in Malaga is in an easy to reach location and is light, airy and professional with meeting rooms for privacy. Jose Manuel Garzon Macho is a charming, professional and knowledgeable lawyer. He is a specialist in property law and has extensive experience as a legal and tax adviser in all kinds of real estate matters. He is supported in their Velez Malaga office by a Dutch Assistant Hennie. She speaks five languages, Dutch, Belgium, English, Spanish and French. Jose Manuel commented that the change of nationalities coming to the local area had been noted by their office and that the need for a native Dutch assistant who also spoke Belgium and French as well as English and Spanish was extremely important. People like to deal with

important matters such as finance, tax and property in their own language and now they offer this service impeccably. Normally the number of sale transactions actioned by the Law Firm reduces throughout the summer. However, last month was their best month ever a testament to their business and service. The aim of the Law Firm is to provide “More than just Legal and Tax services”. They guarantee a personal, rigorous and professional service in a fast and efficient manner and at a reasonable cost. As a result of their good service many clients use them for a house purchase or sale and then return for help with their tax returns. Jose Manuel Garzon carries out tax returns for resident and nonresidents both quarterly and annually. This is charged at 100 euro (incl IVA) per return. Their pricing structure is open and a full price list is given to the customer at the beginning, so there is no surprise bill at the end. More recently owners of holiday rentals are using the law firm. Owners of the properties let out must be registered with the Junta de Andalucía and must register quarterly declarations from their rentals. Jose Manuel Garzon can help both with this registration and the tax returns. In the last couple of years paperwork with regards to house sales has become more and more important. Many houses and villas don't have the correct paperwork. For example land boundaries, registering of new buildings, extensions and pools

Registry fee along with the standard duty taxes ( 1.5% of the value given to the new construction) the cost is likely to be in-between 2,500 and 3,000 euro if the work is carried by himself at Axarquia Solicitors. Adding for example an extension due to its higher value the costs will be likely to be more. However they pride themselves on being exceptionally competitive in the market place. He advised that their legal fees are extremely competitive being 1% of the purchase price which includes 21% VAT where other firms normally add the VAT on top. Another type of situation that can occur throughout a house purchase, is for example, those buying a property in an urbanisation on rustic land that is in the process of becoming urban land. in Alcaucin many urbanisations will come under urban land when the Urban Plan is approved. Although, in the long term this is a good thing, clients must be advised of the extra costs that may be involved in the future such as road access and lightening must be paid for.
with the Castro all needs be done before a sale can proceed. A DAFO certificate isn't required in all cases for example where a property is correctly registered and all licenses for all the property including extensions pools etc. have been obtained. For many this is not the case and so acquiring a DAFO certificate from the Town Hall is advised. A DAFO doesn't make a property legal it is a form of regulation. In some cases some properties are unable to get a DAFO for example if the property has been built on protected land. Jose Manuel commented that everything can be sorted with time and money. For example he strongly advises a property should be bought with correct paperwork and with a DAFO (if needed) however if this isn´t possible and both parties (buyer and seller) are totally informed and warned of the situation a sale can still go through. DAFO Certificate is a costly process and for some house owners it may be possible ( if agreed with by the buyer) to hold a retention fee from the process off the sale to sort the DAFO out afterwards. This usually works out more expensive than sorting out the paperwork prior to the sale but offers an option. Jose Manuel has helped many clients needing legal assistance even if they are not in the process of selling, most typically to add swimming pools to their paperwork. To register the construction, the Architect fee, Legal and Notary fee and Land

BATTLE BACK GOLF NEEDS YOU! WENTY injured ex service personnel are coming to the region to play golf at Baviera, Antequera and Los Moriscos in October as part of their rehabilitation. This is all due to the amazing hard work of two inspirational ladies, Penny Bentley-Ennis and Veronica Molyneux.
T
to host two ex service personnel and take them to Baviera Golf Club for a couple of rounds of golf. Battle Back Golf replied inviting her to an interview, which she obviously passed with flying colours because they didn't just arrange to send two personnel they were sending six! Don't panic Mr Mainwaring!
part of what we do” Penny said. “Veronica is a motivated fundraiser and has organised amazing, successful events in Vinuela and on the Costa such as Ladies Day at Ascot, Bangers and Mash Square Bash nights, Pomp and Circumstance as well as car boot stall. The list goes on as does the fun at these events”
It all began four years ago when Penny, a keen golfer and a member of Baviera Golf Club, had unfortunately, broken her leg. She happened to be watching a programme one day about ex service personnel who had been injured in the line of duty. As part of their rehabilitation they were learning to play golf! No mean feat if you've lost an arm or leg, or worse! Most of them were also suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well. The programme finished by asking golf courses to host these injured golfers.
Penny's good friend Veronica immediately said “well we better get fund raising” and they did. It was a struggle but throughout the year they tirelessly raised the funds. They managed to raise enough money to pay for flights, hotel, golf, prizes, packed lunches etc “I couldn't have done it without Veronica” Penny said, “but it's exhausting. It takes us 12 months to raise the money and because of its success we've got twenty injured veterans coming in October this year with medical support.” Penny and Veronica's passion to support this cause has supported an amazing 46 injured veterans during the last 4 years, including an expected 20 veterans this year. “Raising funds and highlighting the work of Battle Back golf is a huge
“I organise the golf days, recruit the golfers, organise the accommodation and travel and help with Veronica's events. There are collection tins round and about for any loose change, which interestingly over the year amounts up to quite a sum. Dave Parker from Marco Polo shop in Competa is one of our golfers and has a collection tin in the shop if you have any small change. We also have the amazing support of generous sponsors who donate every year to Battle Back Golf.” The Battle Back Golf Programme was founded at Headley court in 2009 is a military initiative designed to utilise golf to enhance the recovery of Wounded, Injured and Sick (WIS) service personnel. It has proved successful in

supplementing the physical, psychological and cognitive rehabilitation of over 200 serving and veteran personnel. The programme aims to provide golfing education, competitive opportunities and provide the veterans with specially adapted golf equipment, sponsored by Ping, which all aim to engage with the members and enhance their social integration, improving self confidence and morale. A nationwide network of PGA pros has generously donated their time and resources to coach Battle Back Golfers in the UK. This year in Andalucía the veterans will play at three courses during their time here; Baviera, Antequera and Los Moriscos. If enough golfers volunteer to play, each veteran will play in a 4 ball, 1:3 which means that 60 golfers are needed. So dust off those golf clubs whatever your ability, they need golfers to play! Penny remembers 2 years ago at Baviera “We had a shotgun start, and on hearing the loud bang and the rocket up in the sky, a few of my Battle Back Golfers jumped

from their buggies and threw themselves to the floor and covered their heads with their hands as they thought they were under attack. I promised that in future we would only use Clayton horns.” “Last year, when we arrived at Baviera, one young Battle Back golfer asked for a few minutes to change his feet. I smiled and asked him what he was going to change them into! Oh! He said I have special prosthetic feet for golf; these I have on are for walking! And we both just laughed out loud. I had no idea he had lost his feet.”
giving a fee free performance for all. So come on golfers get booked in to play at one of our golf venues or simply come after golf for the meal or just drinks. We will be pleased to welcome you to this amazing golf event. Antequera 2nd October Los Moriscos 3rd October Baviera 4th October

also Count of Barcelona. The details of the foundation of the Order of Mercy can be seen to this day in the Crown of Aragon Archives in Barcelona. Centuries later in 1687 the Virgin of La Mercè came to the aid of Barcelona by making a plague of locusts disappear. After the locust plague the city council elected La Mercè as co-patron saint of Barcelona although she was not officially canonised as a patron saint of Barcelona until 1868 by Pope Pius IX. Barcelona has celebrated La Mercè festival every year since 1687 and never been plagued by locusts since then.
LA MERCE Friday 21st to Monday 24th September
L
a Merce is Barcelona's biggest annual festival and often called the Festival of festivals. The Barcelona Mercè festival 2018 dates are Friday 21st to Monday 24th September 2018. Mercè is called Les Festes de la Mercè in the Catalan language and in the Spanish language Fiestas de la Mercè. The guest city for 2018 Merce festival is Lisbon. Bem-vindo!
This is the celebration of the Patron Saint of Barcelona, the Virgin Mary, who is called 'María de las Mercedes', meaning 'Mary of Mercies.' She is also called 'La Mare de Deu de la Mercè,' meaning 'Mother of God of Mercy' in Catalan - or 'Virgin de La Mercè' - Virgin of Mercy - or 'Nuestra Señora de la Merced' (Spanish) which means Our Lady of Mercy - or La Mercè for short. The words 'Mercè' in Catalan and 'Merced' in Spanish mean mercy in English.

Legend of La Mercè. According to legend on the night of 2nd August 1218 the Virgin Mary appeared to the Catalan knight Pere Nolasc. She asked him to form a sacred order of monks in her name. He did as she asked and formed the Order of Merced, which was dedicated to ransoming Christians, who had been taken prisoner by Saracen pirates during the wars of the crusades and who could not afford to pay their ransoms. Pere Nolaschad actually already been ransoming captured Christians since 1202 some 15 years before the Virgin appeared to him, but he constantly prayed for help and divine intervention and this came in the form of a Marian experience in the year 1218. TheOrder of Mercywas established on August 10th 1218 with the help of Nolasc's confessor at Barcelona cathedral, Saint Ramón de Penyafort, and with support from King Jaume 1 of Aragon who was
There are many free concerts in Barcelona during the Mercè festival including concerts at Bogatell beach. A large part of the Merce music events is a music festival called BAM music festival (Barcelona Acción Musica) which is an annual indie music festival that takes place during the Merce Barcelona city festival. All BAM festival concerts are outdoor and free. The BAM festival is organised by the city of Barcelona and has around over 100 free open-air concerts by international and local artists at four open air venues in Barcelona. Visit the BAM website to see full festival programme. he Merce festival is a festival with a music festival, Catalan traditions, parades, concerts, firework displays, a 10km run and many more events in Barcelona at many locations in the city. Some events like the 10k Merce run take place before or after the main festival. The 24th September is always a public holiday in Barcelona in honour of the city's patron saint La Merce but in 2017 the Merce public holiday moved from Sunday 24th to Monday 25th September.

igs grow on the Ficus tree (Ficus carica), which is a member of the Mulberry family. They are unique in that they have an opening, called the "ostiole" or "eye," which is not connected to the tree, but which helps the fruit's development by increasing its communication with the environment. Two crops of figs are potentially produced each year in Spain The first, called the breba crop, develops in the spring on last year’s growth. In contrast, the main fig crop develops on the new growth and ripens in the late summer or fall. The main crop is generally superior in both quantity and quality than the breba crop.
Figs are a good source of dietary fiber. Fiber and fiber-rich foods may have a positive effect on weight management. In one study, women who increased their fiber intake with supplements significantly decreased their energy intake, yet their hunger and satiety scores did not change. Figs, like other high fiber foods, may be helpful in a weight management program.

bran contains about 14 grams of fiber). Fig Leaf May Have InsulinLowering Properties You probably do not think about the leaves of the fig tree as one of fig's edible parts. But in some cultures, fig leaves are a common part of the menu, and for good reason. The leaves of the fig have repeatedly been shown to have antidiabetic properties and can actually reduce the amount of insulin needed by persons with diabetes who require insulin injections. In one study, a liquid extract made from fig leaves was simply added to the breakfast of insulin-dependent diabetic subjects in order to produce this insulinlowering effect. Figs' Potential Cardiovascular Effects In animal studies, fig leaves have been shown to lower levels of triglycerides (a form in which fats circulate in the bloodstream), while in in vitro studies, fig leaves inhibited the growth of certain types of cancer cells. Researchers have not yet determined exactly which substances in fig leaves are responsible for these remarkable healing effects.

Besides their potassium and fiber content, figs emerged from our food ranking system as a good source of the trace mineral manganese. Figs' Potential Protection against Macular Degeneration Your mother may have told you carrots would keep your eyes bright as a child, but as an adult, it looks like fruit is even more important for keeping your sight. lovely warm evening in August the Sayalonga neighbourhood celebrated the various countries living in the community. Each country brought their people together, preparing their special dishes. The tables in the market place were filled with British mince pies, German Currywurst, Dutch cheese, Swiss cakes, and Spanish Gazpacho. This evening clearly showed how lovely it is when different nationalities come together to celebrate the various cultures. Well done Sayalonga!

THE TRIFIT BIG CHALLENGE
Raising Money for children with the rare disease “Butterfly Skin”
I
n The Grapevine Magazine last month, we ran an article about The TriFit BIG Challenge. The Big Challenge was the idea of Triathlete, Chris Grenfell who is based in Marbella. It didn’t take much persuading by Chris to get his friend and fellow triathlete Jansen Riley from Competa involved in the tough endurance event. Chris’s idea was to create a tough, three day event to raise money for the ‘Debra, piel de Mariposa Charity’. I was asked and initially decided it wasn’t for me. I held my ground for a few weeks then finally caved in when I read an article about the “Debra charity” and the skin condition “Butterfly Skin”. To be honest I had never heard about the condition. However I soon found out that Butterfly Skin is a rare disease causing extreme fragility of the skin. The children with this condition suffer in pain on a daily basis and will for the rest of their lives. The fault lies in a genetic mutation that fails to “glue” the layers of the

skin together meaning that even a simple embrace can cause harm. Sadly, to date there is no cure. What was the TriFit Big Challenge? Day 1 / 15km Sea Swim Day 2 / 250km Bike Ride Day 3/ 50km Run Day 1 - The Swim This was the part I was the most anxious about. The furthest I had ever swam prior to the challenge was just over 4k. In fact I have not swam much recently so although I felt confident that I could complete the distance, I was worried about muscle fatigue the following day. The day before the swim there was talk about changing the swim at the last moment due to a influx of Jellyfish on the Costa del Sol, particularly in the Marbella area. We talked about rowing or cycling to Gibraltar (200K) but thankfully the majority of the Jellyfish had disappeared by the Friday morning. Chris decided that we should break the swim into 3 x 5 kilometre sets taking a short break in between
each set. We set of from Playa Cable in Marbella only for me to be bitten on the cheek by a jellyfish and Chris on the nose in the first 10 metres. Apart from that, the conditions were near on perfect and we completed the first 5km and all of our longest ever swims in a steady 1.35mins The 2nd 5km was a bit more eventful as the wind had picked up and the water was getting very choppy as the wind changed direction we were barely moving and it took over 30 minutes to complete the first kilometre. Whilst out at sea we decided to change direction and swim with the wind. This turned out to make perfect sense and once again we completed our longest ever swims covering a little over 7km. We were all in good spirits knowing that there was only 3km to go. Although, in the back of my mind I knew that this was still equivalent distance to a 120 lengths in a 25 metre pool! Again this section went reasonably well and we all finished with no more than a couple of jelly fish stings and sore necks from the sun.

Day 2 - The Bike I was looking forward to this part!! We woke up around 5am and headed down to the start at the famous Marbella Arch. We set off at 6.15am along the busy coastal dual carriageway to Fuengirola. As we arrived in Malaga the Sun was already up and we were setting a decent pace. In Rincon de la Victoria we were joined by our triathlon team mate, Carol and we chatted all the way to Torre del Mar where we stopped for breakfast. We had already covered nearly 100k but it was all on flat roads in the cool. We were then joined by our Spanish team mate Abel who cycled with us for the next 40k. Now the climbing was to start in the hotter part of the day. Although it was a little overcast the temperature stayed around 30 degrees as we cycled through Velez Malaga, Puente don Manuel and Zafaraya. We stopped near to Lake Bermejales for some lunch before the next push to Granada. When we arrived in Granada it was thundering and according to the weather report there was heavy rain in the ski resort of Pradallano our final destination. The very last section of the ride was a 24k uphill ride to Pradallano. We set off together but soon split up as we were going at different speeds, none of which were very fast! This was easily the toughest bit of the day. I can’t describe the relief of arriving in Pradallano. I was tired, and ready for bed! Also 45 minutes after we had finished I started shaking which is not a great sign. I had arrived at my limit with the amount of training I had put. I went to bed that night not feeling great, and not looking forward to the 50k uphill run the following day. Day 3 - The Run My alarm went off at 5.30am. I did not eat the night before as I felt so bad. So it is fair to say I was a bit worried about the day ahead. The day was going to be different as we were taking part in an official race, The Subida al Pico del Veleta. The race is a 50k running

race setting off from Granada running uphill to Pico del Veleta (3.369m) on the highest paved road in Europe. There were 600 runners, some of which are professionals and currently represent their countries. On the start line I felt light headed, I was listening to the tannoy system and saw all the other runners taking photos and all I could think about was making sure I didn’t have to drop out after a couple of kilometres. The race started at 7am and the three of us ran together for the majority of the race, all was good. The race its self was un eventful. Some of it we ran and other bits we walked. The support was excellent, and the scenery stunning. Of the three days this was the easiest and the most enjoyable. The last few kilometres were tough but we knew we were nearly there. Then just after 8 hours we arrived at the finish line. The High Point Crossing the snowy finish line on the final day The Low Point Standing in Pradallano, Granada after the long bike leg with five concerned people looking at me asking if I was OK. I was answering yes, but I clearly wasn’t!
Callum & Tania Without Callum (Chris’s Son) and his partner Tanya the challenge would not have happened. They supported us in Kayaks on the swim leg and in a support vehicle on the bike leg. They were both positive and made the experience that much more enjoyable. Again, we could not have done it without you. Thank-you Big Chris Gale force winds were no problem for big Chris as he jumped in the Kayak and helped out in some tough conditions. Not to mentioning driving us around from beach to beach. Thank-you Kerry Our CD Axarlon team mate supported us in her car on the bike leg and logistically made the last day happen. Without Kerry’s help parts of the event would have been pretty much impossible. Thank-you Kerry Charro & Leena These two are the fund raisers from the Debra Charity. Leena herself suffers from the condition. They were there when we started the swim taking lots of photos and raising awareness of the whole event. They give up their spare time to raise money for the charity. Thank-you both .
Looking back it was a fantastic experience. One of those memories that will stay with me forever. In the article I have mentioned myself, Chris and Jansen but it would not have been possible without the help of a lot of other people. So a big thank-you to the following people that made it happen. Julie Grenfell Thank-you for letting us stay in your beautiful Marbella villa, feeding and watering us and generally putting up with us over the first couple of days. Thank-you. If anyone is looking to stay in luxury sports retreat, checkout the Facebook page: Trifitmarbella
And finally and most importantly a massive thank-you to all of you who donated. I understand that there are always people raising money for many worthwhile charities and we cannot give to all. However those that have donated your money will go to making someone’s life a little more comfortable. Article by: Steve Twiselton

witching from bottled water to home water filtration is one of the fastest, easiest and most impactful steps to live healthy, save money and protect the planet. Home water purification is by far the most economical, most convenient and most effective way of producing high quality, healthy water. Safer drinking water anytime. When you filter your water, you are ensured that you have healthy drinking water, compared to the bottled water and tap water that comes straight from the water treatment plants. Unfiltered water, even if it has come from the water treatment plant still have contaminants such as lead. A water filtration system removes these chemicals, other impurities and most of the 2,100 known
toxins in drinking water are removed. Protect the environment. With a home water filtration system, you will not be adding more rubbish into landfills. On the average, it will take 450 years for plastic bottles to disintegrate. Minimize aggravation of skin conditions. Substances such as heavy metals, fluoride and chlorine in the water can aggravate skin conditions. This includes psoriasis and eczema, especially in children. Cost Savings If you are currently buying bottled water, you’ll realize a big saving from installing a water filter at home
Reduce plumbing repair bills. You can reduce plumbing repairs, and cut your repair bills when you use filtered water. Heavy metals, minerals and chemicals in unfiltered water can cause damage to your plumbing system. It is not only the pipes that could be affected but also other home appliances that use water. This includes your water dispenser, refrigerator ice maker, dishwasher and washing machine. Enhance disaster preparedness. If a sewer line bursts near your house, it can cause water contamination. However, you will be protected in you have an water filtration system installed for the whole house.

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Who Are You?
W
e all love butterflies; but we are not so keen on caterpillars, especially when they devour our crops or favourite plant. But you can´t have one without the other, as the song goes. So what's the answer? It's easy to say, in a green world, leave them alone and I would take that pathway but I do understand it's difficult when the cabbage whites are munching away at your brassicas; clothes moth caterpillars are chomping through your favourite cardigan and the tomato moth caterpillars are tucking into your tastiest tomatoes. But stop and think before you reach for the spray bottle of insecticide. Every one of those devouring caterpillars has the ability to turn into a hovering thing of beauty that delights our eyes during late summer walks around our gardens and campo. And it's not even just the butterflies that are so beautiful; many of our beloved birds are packed with caterpillar power. They're part of the food chain. Butterflies and moths are found on every continent except Antarctica

and it is thought that there are around 15,000 species of butterflies and 200,000 species of moths worldwide. It sounds like a lot but they, like much of our wildlife, are having a hard time. It is believed that over the last two to three decades the Iberian butterfly population has dropped by some 70%, and continues to fall; this is in line with worldwide trends. The reasons are various with the usual death knell – climate change, and in particular summer droughts, intensive farming methods with the use of chemical insecticides and herbicides and loss of habitat due to urbanisation. Gardeners can help these endangered creatures, help swing those figures around and I want to help you do it fairly painlessly! We may be small but there are a lot of us and remember that the ultimate goal is to sit back in your garden and watch the gorgeous flight of butterflies. That metamorphosis from squashy and ugly to a dancing flutter of flight has always held us in awe and amazement. Let's make sure it is never lost from our lives.
Growing a few plants specifically for butterflies can make an enormous difference. There are two absolute musts in a butterfly garden. Most of us know and recognise buddleja – commonly known as the butterfly bush for obvious reasons. All types are loved by butterflies but, probably, buddleja davidii is their favourite and it's supremely easy, tough, drought resistant etc. A must have if you've space for a large shrub. The second is less well known, the commonly named butterfly plant or asclepia curassavica. Its bright orange flowers are attractive and, again, it is tough and easy. This is an interesting one because to most insects (and humans) it is poisonous but it is like chocolate cake to the monarch butterfly. The toxins reside in their system making them unpalatable to birds, so it's a win-win for the caterpillars. They will devour your plant but don´t worry, the plant will survive and re-shoot. Mother Nature will take control; most of the caterpillars will have eaten their full and form chrysalides, a few will go hungry and die. Similar looking are the lantanas and verbena family in

general; try the perennial verbena bonariensis, its swaying stems act like magnets to our fluttering friends. Other butterfly perennials are penstemon, agapanthus, aster, eupatoriums, achilleas, valerians, salvias and the delicious minty scent of agastaches and the hot cherry pie aroma of heliotropes draw them too. Silveryleaved lychnis coronaria with its searing hot pink flowers is another one and if you don´t do pink, there's a calmer white version too. If you want some instant butterfly plants try the quick growing annual cosmos, sunflowers, pentas, zinnias, nicotianas or tobacco plants and marigolds. Many of our common herbs work too; lavender, rosemary, thyme and oregano being particular favourites. Try a patch of flopping oregano plants, dusty-pink in full flower, with blue agapanthus flowers spearing skyward – your butterflies will be in heaven with these nectar-rich plantings. Many ground-covering succulents are good butterfly material too; much of the sedum family and, in particular sedum herbstfreude Autumn Joy which, here, will give a spring flowering and a repeat autumn flush, useful for late nectar. In climbers I've noticed that the passion vines are particularly liked and the night-opening ipomoea alba is a haunt of moths. For a small tree, try caesalpinia gilliesii, the lovely bird of paradise tree with its yellow flowers and prominent red stamens. If you want butterflies, be nice to nettles! CAS NEWS This Months Update
Seacrest Hog Roast! Kurt and Laura from Seacrest Kennels and Cattery in Nerja will be hosting their 13th Annual Hog Roast BBQ in aid of the Costa Animal Society (CAS) on Friday 28 September at 8:00pm. This event is always a lively evening to mark the end of summer. Even the aged and infirm will be staying up well past their bedtimes, shuffling about the dance floor or tapping their canes to the infectious music provided by the inimitable DJ Kapt'n Krap. There will be an exiting raffle with prizes great and small and all proceeds from the night will go directly to helping abandoned dogs and cats in our area. Tickets are â‚Ź20 per person which includes a hog roast buffet with complimentary salads and a half bottle of wine. (Vegetarian options are available.) Booking in advance is essential with Laura and Kurt at 95 252 1426. Scruffs! Handlers and dogs, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) is pleased to announce that our annual dog show Scruffs will be held on October 14 at the Plaza de EspaĂąa in Nerja from 12.00pm until 4.00pm. Guaranteed to be a wonderful afternoon, there will be prizes for 12 different categories, including Waggiest Tail, Best Rescue Dog and the real nail-biter, best Sit and Stay. Food and beverages will be available along with several stalls offering a diverse selection of handicrafts. Attention Boys and Girls: This year CAS will be adding a new category, Child Handler 12 years or under. Come on kids, you've got plenty of time to practice having your dog walk close on your left, stop, sit and shake, then reward them with a delicious treat and a pat on the head. And ladies and gentlemen, while you're at Scruffs, don't miss our fantastic tombola! For the uninitiated, a tombola is a game where when you buy a ticket if the last number of that ticket is a 0 or 5, there will be a corresponding prize on the table. The prizes this year will be well worth the risk. We are also happy to announce that at 2.00pm there will be a dog walk with several animal rescue groups parading dogs ready for adoption. If a particular pooch catches your fancy, after a home evaluation you can begin a new life with a loving companion. Big fun!

If you would like to meet any CAS rescue dogs and/or cats who are up for adoption please feel free to call Kurt or Laura on 95 252 1426.
