Editors Note... Despite the glorious weather September marks, for me, the end of the summer as the children start back at school. My daughter starts a new phase in her life by going to college in Torrox and getting the bus every morning down to the coast. My son continues on at the secondary school in Competa without his sister a new phase for him too! Life slots into a definite route of work and school runs and beach days become less and less. However, we are lucky to be able to have the choice of beach days all year round. The month of September also brings the Competa annual Walking Festival now in its 7th year. This takes place between the 26th and 29th of the month and compromises of 2 different walks on each of the days, an easier and harder one. You can sign up for all the walks or just one or some, see more information on pages 36 and 37. If you prefer art to walking, there is a fabulous event being held in Competa at the Galeria Luz de Vida from the 12th to 19th September, They are welcoming artists from all round the world for their 5th Art Symposium. Also, a date for the diary, The 3rd Arts Route of Frigiliana will be held from the 4th - 6th of October 2019 from 11 am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm

people, making it harder and more expensive to reach Spanish territory. The 39% drop means that the Spanish government is coming closer to its goal of reducing irregular immigration by half in 2019. Last year, by comparison, the western Mediterranean route became the main gateway into Europe after Italy closed off access to its ports. As a result, there were 65,000 arrivals in Spain. These days, it is Greece that is seeing the highest arrival figures in the Mediterranean: 28,200 so far this year.

ullfighting returns to Mallorca, despite protests. After an absence of two years, traditional bullfights have returned to the Spanish island of Mallorca. The first spectacle after the break was held at the Coliseo Balear bullring arena in capital city, Palma. Last month. Lawmakers in Spain's Balearic Islands have banned young spectators from attending bullfights as well as the killing or harming of the animals at regional bullfights back in 2017, but this was overruled by a court in December 2018.The bullfight last month was the first since the ban was overruled. Around 11-thousand people witnessed the fight and were happy about the return of the Spanish tradition. Outside the arena, however, a group of protesters gathered, holding signs and chanting slogans calling the tradition "torture". Bullfighting and bull-related events in summer festivals remain immensely popular throughout Spain although animal rights groups have gained some ground in their campaigns.

company's internal policy against beards, moustaches, or stubble went against their constitutional rights. The region's labour inspectorate also ruled that policies stipulating men wear ties and women wear ribbons amounted to sexual discrimination. Their decision was made after the local branch of the Workers’ Commission union complained about Burger King’s internal policy. Burger King’s policy made it mandatory for men to shave off beards, moustaches, and goatees for “sanitary reasons”. But, for the labour inspectorate, “food hygiene can be equally achieved by more moderate measures that don't go against the fundamental rights of workers”. Carles Catalá, the union's spokesman, told Euronews he was happy about the outcome and hopes it can be applied to other companies with similar discrimination cases, though he insisted that “people need to make unions aware of their complaint” if they want to see some change since decisions are made at the regional level.

arcelona city council has announced it is to take action against the mostly unlicensed rickshaws that have proliferated on the city’s streets in recent years, which some estimates put as high as 2,000. “Barcelona isn’t Bombay,” said Jaume Collboni, the deputy mayor. “We have cycle lanes that are for bicycles, pavements for pedestrians and we aspire to having a respectful and quality tourism model.” Rosa Alarcón, the city’s councillor for mobility, complained that the rickshaws “contribute nothing to citizens’ mobility because they are fundamentally focussed on tourism”. However, outside the tourist season, drivers often look for clients outside nightclubs, concerts and football matches. In July police decommissioned 122 rickshaws, and the council now proposes a “zero-tolerance” policy on traffic infringements in an effort to bring the business under control. Only around 500 rickshaws are registered with the authorities. As with the explosion in the number of electric scooters, as well as the ubiquitous bike and Segway tours, the problem is that rickshaws exist in a legal vacuum. Technically speaking they may, like bikes, use cycle lanes and wide pavements, but the city wants them to be covered by a separate bylaw.

not comply with the obligations established in the Article.10 of the Horizontal Property Law (LPH) and damages do occur, we cite two cases to demonstrate the difference in claims depending on the affected party. 1. – If the affected party is an owner in the community and falls due to inadequate maintenance by the Community of Owners i.e. a broken tile or poorly preserved community entrance floor, or if damage is caused to their property due to a leaking community drainpipe, a leak from a community terrace, or a leak from a community façade, they should file a claim for damages against the Community based on Article. 10- LPH.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS Damage Claims Against A Community Of Owners

C

ommunities of Owners are civilly liable for damages caused to third parties or even members of their own community. When these damages are derived from the malfunction of community owned items or where there has been negligence in the care of community property. In general, community property could be any of the following; antennas and communication systems, elevators, roof terraces, roofing, heating installations, enclosures of common areas, buildings or urbanizations, foundations, pipes and ducts, corridors, locks, external coverings, structures, (Article.396 CC, lists in particular pillars, beams, slabs, and weight bearing walls). The regulations which govern Communities of Owners can be found in the Horizontal Property Law. Communities of Owners must always maintain the guarantees and ensure that all common constructions and areas are in

perfect condition. Article.10 of the Horizontal Property Law (LPH) establishes that the Community of Owners is obliged to carry out the necessary works to sustain the proper maintenance and conservation of the property and its services, so that it meets the necessary structural, habitability, accessibility, safety and security conditions. If damage to a person or to a dwelling occurs as a result of neglect to maintain the common installations, areas, or property in perfect condition, the Community of owners can be held civilly responsible, but the Community President or administrator could also be directly or indirectly responsible. They are required by law to take the appropriate measures to ensure that no harm can occur to a third party by ensuring any urgent repair works, or maintenance is carried out immediately when there is evidence that the lack of maintenance could cause harm to a third party or dwelling If the Community of Owners does

2. - If the affected party is a third party, i.e. not an owner inside the community, the method of reclamation from the community is governed by different criteria and the period for a claim is limited to ONE YEAR FROM THE DATE OF THE DAMAGE OR INJURY Therefore, if you have problems with a Community of Owners, it is important to have an expert lawyer to advise you and manage your claim, to protect your rights and to be able to obtain full compensation for the damages caused. Do not forget to contact Axarquia Solicitors, with offices throughout the Costa del Sol and with more than 20 years of experience legal advice to clients. the RUTA DEL ARTE FRIGILIANA 2019. A special mention requires the posthumous tribute to Soledad Platero Sánchez (1995-2019) in LOCALIZATION Nº14, where, along with her posthumous work, is the initiative UN NARCISO PARA SOLEDAD, a charitable proposal to raise funds for research against cancer, in general and sarcoma, in particular. "Soledad's favorite flower was Narciso. She loved the beauty of the ephemeral of its flower, and the simple fact of seeing them bloom in spring made her happy”. A DAFFODIL FOR SOLEDAD is an initiative for the Art Route Frigiliana 2019. We would love that all those who want to be part, send us a daffofil in any creative format by traditional mail or hand delivered to ESTUDIO-GALERÍA AMARTE , C / HERNANDO EL DARRA 6, 29788 FRIGILIANA (MÁLAGA), before October the 3rd 2019. All the daffodils dedicated to Soledad will be on display and will be on sale at location number 14 of RUTA DEL ARTE FRIGILIANA 2019, at C / Alta 11, next to his posthumous work. The benefits obtained with this activity and exhibition will be donated: -to the AECC (Spanish Association Against Cancer) -To Other Associations or Foundations that support research. (CRIS Foundation ...) -and direct donations to research groups on sarcoma. Also, so that Soledad always has daffodils, share yours by tagging @unnarcisoparasoledad or using #unnarcisoparasoledad, you can also send them via email to unnarcisoparasoledad@gmail.com And like every year, so that you can discover the treasures that each exhibition holds, we will put at your disposal the information brochures with a map, where you will find the 34 locations and an example of the work of each artist. As well, this year we will also have an information kiosk to collect the brochures, ask your questions and participate in the photocall. One more year we want you to enjoy the walk and the art in an environment full of charm, beauty and creativity. To thank all the people and groups that have supported us and made it possible for this project to grow and become an annual appointment for residents, participants and visitors. Special thanks to the collaboration of the establishments HOSPEDERÍA EL CARAVANSAR, HOTEL CASA TORREÓN109, HOTEL VILLA FRIGILIANA, PELUQUERÍA MARÍA ISABEL; to the Associations EL ABANICO and FRIGILIANARTE; to the individuals BASILIZA SÁNCHEZ, LOLITA GUTIÉRREZ, PATY CRUZ, THEA BAIRD, and to all those who have

PMS Taking the Stress Out Of Properties, Pools and Gardens!

T

aking the Stress out of properties, pools and gardens, PMS - what a great name! If you own a villa and want it looked after by a trustworthy, hardworking and capable gentleman then Pete Benson owner of newly launched PMS is the man for you. However, PMS is much more than a local property maintenance company, they have invested heavily in the correct machinery to make sure a job is done swiftly, effectively and with as little mess as possible. Pete and his wife and son moved to Competa over 10 years ago. Pete has spent a large proportion of his time working abroad. He is ex-military with 22 years of service, he retired at 40 with full time served and then worked in similar roles in Afghanistan, Iraq and West Africa. When Pete took leave he was often found working alongside friends in the construction and maintenance business in and around Competa. As a result of this he has already built up a small customer base who rely on him. The family decided it was time for Pete to stay at home on a more

50 The Grapevine

permanent basis to enjoy family life and the village they fell in love with and chose to move to. It was then the natural decision for Pete to leverage from the experience he had gained whilst on leave and to expand the small customer base he had already created within the Property Maintenance business. In order to provide a truly great service and separate himself a little from the competition he has bought a Wood Chipper, Industrial Strimmer, Chain Saw and other garden machinery and implements to provide effective results for the task at hand. I asked about the wood chipper not totally understanding its role. Pete explained it helps cut up branches and logs and mulches it down to be taken away easily without the need for skips or spread on the land providing a valuable source of nutrients.

weekly up keep visits. Finally, Pete was keen talk about his Industrial Spray Painter which uses Airless Compression. Unlike air-powered paint sprayers, which use air compressors to push the paint out with force, airless paint sprayers contain no air compressor. Instead, the airless compression uses a motorised pump to pressurise and push the paint out of the spray gun's tip. The high pressure built up within the tube atomisers the paint, meaning that it pulls it apart into a fine mist. This creates a smooth finish with a minimum amount of paint. A 10 x 15 room can be painted in 15 minutes. The painting side of the business includes both exterior and interior walls and a Scaffold tower is included in the professional equipment he has to ensure the job is finished to a high standard.

Despite the investment in machinery no garden job is to small and Pete is equally happy to quote on regular weeding and maintenance of a garden or clearing of land. This type of work often sits nicely alongside the pool maintenance service he provides which again can be a one-off cleaning or sand filter changing or

PMS is a fully legal business run by dependable, reliable and family man Pete Benson who we at The Grapevine have known for years and we wish you all the best in your new venture. See Advert Opposite .

SPORT IN SPAIN Both Traditional & NonTraditional

S

pain is quite well-known when it comes to sports. And when it comes to sports, football is king in Spain. There have been a lot of variations in the kind of football that has been played in Spain but recently, the most dominant is the English style of soccer or associated football. As a matter of fact, of the most dominant football clubs in the whole world, two came from Spain, the FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF. The national football team is also the first ever to win a three-peat in international tournaments. They are also the 1964, 2008 and 2012 UEFA European Champions and the 2010 FIFA World Cup winners. Spain is considered as one of the world’s powerhouse, not just in football but in most major sports events. Other sports that have enjoyed considerable success in Spain include basketball, cycling, futsal,

54 The Grapevine

handball, tennis, motorcycling and even Formula One. This is mainly due to the fact that they have garnered championships in all of these sports. They have also hosted various international events most notably the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona. Some of the brightest Spanish stars in sports includes tennis player Rafael Nadal who has won many Grand Slam titles and Alberto Contador who has taken home many Grand Tour titles that includes many Tour de France titles. Major events that have been hosted in Spain include the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona and the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Other highlights of sport in Spain is the football team bringing home the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 trophies and Óscar Pereiro, Alberto Contador and Carlos Sastre's 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 triumphs in the Tour de France.

But the truth is that in Spain we also have typical, traditional sports with a lot of history behind them, and which, unfortunately, many people have forgotten about. Here are some examples: Caliche murciano (caliche from Murcia): This sport gets its name from the wooden cylinder placed on the ground that must be knocked over with pieces of metal called “moneos.” Usually coins are placed on top of the caliche. as 20 days and more. It’s a great way to sail to Miami, Singapore, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires to name just a few destinations. Once you have arrived at the final destination, The Cruise Market will tailor your holiday to take in a few extra nights and take care of your flights home- it’s all a part of the unique service being provided by John and his team.

THE CRUISE MARKET An Interview with John Deverell

T

he Cruise Market established a couple of years ago by local investors headed by John Deverell brings a new level of travel and tourism expertise to Andalucía. As the name suggests they focus on cruises and using his wealth of experience and knowledge, John and his team can put together cruises that will exceed your expectations. I interviewed John a couple of years back when the business was still in its infancy and so I was intrigued to see how the business has progressed. Before I met with John, I did a little research and scanned over the website. I was interested to see that it had developed enormously since we last spoke. Each cruise is detailed with dates, prices and maps. Each of the many ships are detailed with full itineraries, types of cabins, price differences, deck plans and plenty of photos. Also, there is a cruise and ship finder feature to help start your planning. John explained this is

56 The Grapevine

only a starting point and that once you have an idea of the type of cruise you are looking for then the next step is to give them a call. Special offers and fabulous itineraries come up all the time and aren’t necessarily on their website. Over the next month a new section is coming to their website called River Cruising. These are smaller river boats which sail through cities stopping at least once a day with fascinating itineraries. I asked John to talk to me more about other offers. He asked if I knew about repositioning cruises which I didn’t. This is where ships follow the sun, crossing the Atlantic from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean and South America at the end of the summer season and in reverse in springtime. These repositioning cruises can be exceptionally economical, often less than 2,000 euros per person for a 14-night holiday. They are never less than 10 days and are often for as long

Another holiday that has become very popular over the last couple of years is the Baltic cruise. This is very different from the typical Mediterranean cruises on offer. It operates from May until midSeptember and the most popular choice is the 10-day cruise visiting up to 8 very different countries such as Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Latvia, Estonia and Germany. St. Petersburg in Russia is the high-point of these cruises where most ships stay overnight to allow extra time in this stunning city. This is often classed as the “Midnight Sun” Cruise due to the almost, 24 hours of sunshine throughout the trip. As John talked, I realised how many different types of cruises, types of ships and destinations there are on offer and how John described them they honestly all sounded fabulous. For example, for those interested in art, history and culture there are arts orientated cruises with guest speakers and enhanced tours that bring alive events that formed the character of the areas you are visiting. If you want the traditional Mediterranean Cruise it’s on offer or if you want to sail around the world you can too. Take a look at their website then give them a call you won’t be disappointed. Batalla del Vino, Haro

SPANISH WINE FESTIVALS Celebrating Wine Throughout The Year

L

ast month saw Competa hold their annual wine festival. However the aremany wine festivals throughout the year. In many of the wine growing areas the festivals begin around about September 21st but there are lots of places which celebrate their new vintage at different times. Around the third week of May, for example, there is a delightful festival dedicated to the local Manzanilla held in Sanlucar de Barrameda. This lovely town at the mouth of the Guadalquivir river looking across at the Doñana National Park produces a fino wine, very similar to sherry but unfortified and with a delightful delicate flavour that the locals say obtains its delicacy from the sea breezes working their way through the bodegas. The quality of the sea food here is best enjoyed with a glass of

62 The Grapevine

manzanilla whilst listening to local flamenco – it doesn’t get much better. During March you’ll find a fantastic feiro do viño in the small market town of Chantada in the province of Lugo in the very heart of Galicia. Chantada is a typical Galician town with Romanesque churches, steep terraced vineyards and hill forts from the iron ages. You will find fabulous Albariño wines and spicy young red wines made from the mencía grape. The accompanying food of choice is pulpo (octopus) which is cooked up in enormous copper cauldrons – into which you dip the crusty bread that is a speciality of the nearby village of Cea. Spend all night dancing to a local band and then do the very same thing the next day! If you’re a fan of bathing in wine as well as drinking it then

perhaps think about a visit to Haro in La Rioja at the end of June for the Feast of Saint Peter. It is here that they have a spectacular Batalla del Vino in which hundreds of people throng the streets with huge plastic bottles or leather bags of wine that they proceed to spray over everyone else. Don’t wear your best clothes and you’ll probably have great fun. It also helps that the town of Haro is reputed to be one of the finest places for tapas in the whole of the region, as well. Towards the end of August there is another opportunity for a soaking in the Fiesta de la Vendimia in the Valencian town of Requena, only this time it’s with water. On the noche de zurra the people parade the streets calling for water to help with the next year’s grape harvest. Neighbours and firemen alike then delight in

To advertise call 637 028 873

making their prayers come true by using hoses and buckets to totally soak the paraders. You will find that wine from the year’s first pressing will help the recovery process. La Rioja, Spain’s most famous wine-producing region, the fiestas are generally held towards the end of September especially around St Matthew’s Day (San Mateo), the 24th. The most celebrated, and biggest, of these is at the capital of the province, Logroño. Logroño organizes a ceremony where the new harvest is offered to Our Lady of Valvanera – La Rioja patron. It’s the main date of the Rioja wine festival, and during one week, you can try delicious gastronomic delicacies, watch fireworks, sports and listen to concerts. The Rioja wine festival main area

is Paseo del Espolón, but you find events all around the city, so have a look at the program so you know what’s happening where. 21th September is the main feast day of San Mateo At San Mateo day, 21 September in the park Paseo del Espolon, you can see the ceremony where grapes from different vineyards is carried by hundreds of children and poured into a large wine barrel. Be out early to get a good spot to see this. The area is packed with people and it starts around 12 o’clock, so try to be there at least one hour before. After that two men dressed in regional costume, barefoot treading the grapes in the large wooden tub. With circular dance movements until they can fill a jug with the first juice that will be offered to the statue of the Virgin of Valvanera.

This is a solemn ceremony you can expect to see when you visit Rioja Wine Harvest Festival. During the week, in social clubs known by the name peñas you’ll be able to try gastronomic products and see some things that are usual for this region and Logroño. For example the San Mateo pelota tournament, live music in the streets, firework displays and much more. There are many, many more Wine Festivals throughout the country each of them having its own special atmosphere and customs.

TRIPS FROM THE VILLAGE OF COMPETA Josie Talks Travel!

A

s the 'travel correspondent' for the Grapevine, I thought I would tell you about some recent trips I have been on from Competa. I haven’t written about buses for a while! For the past couple of years Loymerbus and Competa SL have picked up from Canillias and Competa, prior to this, day trips were picked up from Lidl, on Algarrobo Costa. First one was with Loymerbus to Cordoba to see the Patios, on a Sunday. It was 15e and we were picked up at 7am along with about 6 others. We collected up other nationalities on the journey down to Sayalonga, Algarrobo Costa and Torre. On the way we stopped for breakfast, this is normal, but you need a strategy, if there are two or more of you,

72 The Grapevine

one grabs a seat or table, whilst the other elbows it to the bar for the coffee etc. Use the loo after. Most of the first timers, go to the loo first and then have a fight to get served! Don’t hold back, shout your order and fix the barman with your best smile, not holding back and saying, 'after you', to another person. On reaching Cordoba, we were disappointed with the crowds of people and found out from a local that Cordoba is a Heritage site and Sundays in May are the worse time to visit! (The last time we did the Patios was a few years ago and then you could wander round comfortably). We took a picnic, missed the patios and instead went to the Jewish Museum, which was very interesting. For the money the day trip was good, and Cordoba

itself it very pretty and full of winding streets, and Roman ruins. Well worth a visit any other month. The second trip was to Almeria town, again 15e, on a Saturday. I went on my own this time and was the only non Spaniard on board. Two of us waited by the Tourist office for the bus, which didn’t come, then 'Mr and Mrs Loymer' arrived in their car and took us to Sayalonga. The best bus on the fleet was waiting, air conditioned and comfortable, the driver hugged me, and after an hour of picking up from the coast we were off on the motorway. The bus was about half full, but from the noise it sounded more! We went via the motorway and the views from Motril onwards are all plastic down to the sea and creeping up the hillsides. One man in the front told anyone who

would listen the name of each town we passed, including the driver, whilst waiving his arms about. The driver was a talker and an arm waver too! Then the lady in front started talking to the arm waver and the driver! I put my seat belt on! Now I can hear Disgusted of Dorking gasping in disbelief. 'Talking to the driver, and him joining in, this would never be allowed in Britain'! (So far, in all my bus travels I have not seen a bus accident) We stopped for breakfast at small village marooned in the biggest sea of plastic I thought I had seen, until we got to Almeria province! I rushed to the cafĂŠ and sat at the bar, ordered my coffee and two madeleines and watched the rest of the passengers, worrying about where to sit, what to have etc. They queued for the toilets and then had to fight at the bar for service and rush to eat and drink, I was feeling quite the seasoned traveller. On arriving at Almeria the driver said to be back at the bus at 5.45pm, so I asked him to write the time down and what our pick up point was called. (I could always show this to a taxi driver if I got lost), but to my surprise everyone I spoke to in Almeria, asking the way, getting on the buses and using the little train around the town, understood me. Its a town of 3 areas as far as I could see. The old part which is crumbling, with building works in progress, has the Cathedral, Alcazaba and Bull ring. The modern middle of town is a shopping centre with tree lined walks and fountains and a huge modern port area, and then there is the beach, which is very long and clean, but as far as I could see, no sun beds to hire, and no chiringuitos, but maybe that was just in the area I walked along. I

spent a lovely day wandering around under the shade of trees. During siesta the town is silent, with hardly any traffic. At about 5pm the town awoke and I saw three horse drawn carts full of girls singing, dressed in white with red flowers in their hair, but when I asked the kiosk owner why, he didn’t know, just a fiesta. We left on time and belted back to Torre, on a silent bus with a film showing . A good day out in a very nice town. My third trip was with Competa sl bus with Franci the owner and driver, he’s a careful driver who never talks to his passengers whist driving! His wife Toni accompanied us, and they are very helpful. It was to the cherry festival on a Sunday in Alfarnate. I went with a friend and 4 other English speakers. We picked up a couple of people at the garage in Algarrobo and the it took about two hours via Vinuela. The village is small and pretty with flat wheat fields on either side, and we were told that its very cold in the Winter, which is good for growing cherries. Everyone had paper cut out cherries flying from their terraces. The festival was mainly in the local park with a huge sports hall in the middle, there were plenty of toilet facilities which were cleaned on a regular basis during the day. Shady trees with seats around and tree stumps to sit on. Some people carried their own chairs. You could get tickets for food and drink at the bars outside, but the queues were quite long. Especially the bar selling barbecued meat straight from a spit.

boxes of cherries, (for more than it costs at the local market) but only two cherry product stalls, one was selling jam and other things and the other wine in different strengths, but there were so many people pressed around it was impossible to see what else was for sale. (I decided to go back later. I did, only to find they had run out of everything and only had raspberry wine)! We found a man slicing ham, and another one cheese and plating them up for 6e, right next to three beer pumps selling cherry beer, summer beer and oktober beer, I got the beers and my friend queued for the ham. There were no chairs to been seen, but I spotted the fixed chairs around one side of the hall for watching sport, the stall holders had put their personal items on them, but I spotted one and played the old lady card, sitting down with a sigh behind the book stall and gently removed the bag from the next chair. We spend a pleasant hour sitting, eating and watching. The music started in the park, and was good, and again we found two vacant chairs behind the stage and moved them to the shade and stayed until it was time to get back on the bus. Everyone said they had good time and we got back to Competa at 8pm. Its nice to go out and about to see the local villages and customs. To go on these trips Competa sl bus has a website and Loymerbus advertise on the Competa bus stand, or on their office window in Torre and also inside the buses. By Josephine Drew

We went into the sports hall which was full of stalls, selling, ham, cheese, knick knacks, books, turron, ceramics and

"I bet there's never any workers' strikes at a stress ball factory.”

"I tell my friends I'm here for them 24/7 because it sounds better than saying I'm only here for them on 24 July.” "A cowboy asked me if I could help him round up 18 cows. I said, ‘Yes, of course. That’s 20 cows.’”

I just got a new job as a street cleaner! Turns out there’s not much training involved, you just pick stuff up as you go along. My family said I'd never amount to anything, then I invented an invisibility cloak. If only they could see me now "I regret rubbing ketchup in my eyes, but that’s Heinz sight." "I've got an Eton-themed advent calendar, where all the doors are opened for me by my dad's contacts.

"In his job my dad's never lost a case. That makes him Gatwick's top baggage handler. "British people are like coconuts. Hard on the outside but sweet once you crack us. Also often found full of alcohol and holding an umbrella.” "Do I enjoy randomly appointing people to judicial positions? I’ll let you be the judge of that.” Planning meals in advance, now that's some food forethought" "I’m pleased to be getting a beer belly. I’ve always wanted a father figure."

"I’m 20 stone, so being stalked by me is like heart disease. If you really want to avoid it, just start jogging.” After waking up in the morning, a woman tells her husband, "I just had a dream that you gave me the most beautiful diamond necklace. What do you think it means?" "You'll know tonight," the husband says with a smile. The woman can hardly think of anything else all day, and she waits in anticipation for her husband to come home. That evening, the man walks through the door carrying a small package. Elated, the wife tears into the wrapping . . . and uncovers a book titled 'The Meaning of Dreams'.

"My friend doesn’t like to talk about his psoriasis. He’d rather just sweep it under the carpet."

THE IDIOSYNCRASIES OF SPANISH BEACHES by Lorraine Cavanagh of Viveros Florena, Cómpeta

M

id-August, 28C with a light breeze tickling the skin – that's what southern Atlantic summers are famed for. Made to be enjoyed before the storm clouds of autumn arrive! It's been a soft summer in Cádiz province; the heat has been gentler than usual, nights are decidedly cool and many mornings are still heavy with dew – that's what helps the plants survive. As I look around the garden here, there's the usual patch of burnt out gramma grass (that will recover with autumn rains and look greenly lush all winter), the ubiquitous myoporum hedging and yuccas marching their way ever beachward. Beyond, on the dunes, there's lion's claw still throwing out the occasional flower, bird's foot trefoil (lotus corniculatus) and the devilish prickly sea holly that attacks bare feet mercilessly. We like the

84 The Grapevine

wildness of it all; it's empty (almost) and the people that do appear seem to be 'characters' – far from the miles of the brilliant beach brolly brigade. Just yesterday there was one of those characters on the beach, complete with grey parrot in a large cage on the beach. Everything but the kitchen sink sprung to mind, but a parrot?!! But, who knows, maybe the parrot enjoys the sea breezes too – sadly the lady was taking a siesta so I couldn´t ask her. But back to the job at hand and the idiosyncrasy that I wanted to talk about really is pancratium maritimum, the beautiful and ethereal sea daffodil. It's suddenly there, where yesterday there was nothing, and looking impossibly dainty and ephemeral; magical that it grows out of hot dry sand, emerging to salty winds and yet still looks so perfect.

Walking along the beach under the moonlight, the fabulously heavy lily-like perfume first alerts you to their presence and then you see their perfect glowing whiteness. Lovely natives of our Mediterranean and Atlantic shores, the very large bulb, some 5 cm to 7 cm across, is buried deep underground – as much as 0.5m deep. Because it grows in loose sand, shoots can easily poke their way up to the surface. Their strap-like leaves emerge in late autumn, with the rains, dying back in summer to protect themselves from the scorching heat. The beautiful pure white flowers, rather orchid-like, do the opposite, relishing the heat from July through to October. They are carried in umbels ranging from 3 to 15 flowers on stems 30cm tall; each flower may only last 24 hours, but they are prolifically produced. Although bees will visit the

flowers during the day, interestingly, they can only be cross-pollinated by migratory hawk moths. They visit during the months when the sea daffodils open and, being night pollinators, they are drawn in by the scent – emitted only on warm windless nights. Apparently the moths will only visit and pollinate the flowers when winds are less than 2m per second; amazingly the sea daffodils seem able to detect the wind velocity and waft their scent around on still evenings. If the flowers are 'artificially' pollinated by the wind, they will not produce seed because they are not receptive to their own pollen and the plant recognises this. Thus, to avoid wasting pollen (which is a valuable plant resource), it does not release pollen during windy weather. This mechanism is thought to be a throw-back to avoid self-pollination and thus weakening the species gene pool. The daffodils and hawk

To advertise call 637 028 873

moths have perfectly slotted together, adapting life styles to use each other. Who said plants and creatures have no intelligence? The black seeds produced are quite large and thickened by a spongy outer layer which enables them to float easily on water and travel long distances before germination. Young plants will need to be three years old before they will flower, so it's a long process.

So do go down to the beach and admire but, please, don't pick them, just store that lovely picture in your memory! Their native habitat of sand dunes is now extremely threatened and the plants are considered rare in the wild and a protected species. There are reputable sources of cultivated bulbs where you can buy them; emulate growing conditions as closely as possible for success. Viveros Florena will be reopening on 3rd September! And through September we are open 9 until 2, closed Sundays and Mondays.

Pancratium is derived from the Greek meaning 'all strength' possibly as a reference to the plants ability to withstand extreme conditions, whilst maritimum, Viveros Florena, CĂłmpeta, unsurprisingly, means 'from the MĂĄlaga. sea coast'.
