November Weather Days with rainfall: 6 Days Avg Max Temperature: 19.5c Hours of Sunshine : 5.8 p/day The weather data is for guidance only and is the average monthly maximum for the Costa del Sol
October was a lovely month of sunshine but it has slowly and gradually got colder which is why we have a feature on “Heating your home this winter”. At the moment, it seems colder in my house than outside it! We have also featured this month, the municipal swimming pool in Cómpeta as it is a great facility for an inland village. It is now open all year round for classes and free swim. Many of the villagers haven’t even been in-side it, so we have taken a photo! People do need to use it, for it to remain open and at 3 euros a time it is accessible to everyone. I can’t not mention the approach of Christmas this month with many advertisers printing their selection of Christmas fayre and restaurants asking you to book early to avoid disappointment. It will be Christmas day before you know it! Despite the laid back approach of the Spanish, the English still do try and be traditional here in Spain and with the help of the English Shops this is now made easier. Finally, if you would like any flyer's over the month of November, perhaps to advertise you Christmas specials or parties, than we have some fabulous deals on large volume printing please see our advert on page 94. Enjoy and Keep Reading

STARS SHINE ON CÓMPETA TOP performers from the world of music and dance will be headlining two gala shows in Cómpeta. from Le Corsaire, made famous by Fonteyn and Nureyev. The gala nights will also include some local talent: flamenco dancer, Juan Luise El Borde, who will perform two magical solo pieces; Cómpeta based singers, Lisa Edelman and Tom Sobel, plus Lee Payne, a talented tap dancer. “Lee will provide two pieces which will show us the origins of this amazing dance form,” explained Ray. “ Lee is one of the best young tap artists in the business, prepare to be blown away. To provide contrast Hannah Jones, a contemporary dancer will be showcasing two pieces, one choreographed especially for Cómpeta.”
W
e can exclusively announce that a venue has now been confirmed for the CAMP/REACH4DANCE production on December 4th and 5th. The Mayor of Cómpeta has agreed the new gymnasium in the Secondary School as the venue, and has also agreed the use of the stage from El Noche del Vino. “The gym is the perfect location enabling us to meet the high demand for seats,” said Ray Rowden, Director and founder of REACH4DANCE . “It also allows great sight-lines for our audience. The venue also boasts a great separate space where we will be arranging a bar and tapas service.” An exceptional line-up of artistes has also now been confirmed. This includes four of the top graduates from Elmhurst Ballet School: Kana Minegishi, Yamato Mashiko, Jenna Josephine Caroll and Orazio Di Bella. Direct from London's West End, will be Matthew Powell. Matthew is currently dancing in hugely successful production Phantom of the Opera. He will be joined by Julianne Rice-Oxley, an exceptional ballerina. They will be performing a Strauss Waltz, the wedding pas de deux from Coppelia and the stunning grand pas de deux
The gala organisers are keen to attract a cross cultural audience, and have enlisted the expert help of former professional dancer Inez Leniere, of Alberdini. Ray and Inez will co-host the shows with Inez providing the Spanish commentary. It has also been decided to open the final Saturday afternoon rehearsal to the children of Cómpeta primary and junior schools free of charge. “It will be great for all the children to share in, and hopefully, be inspired by the magic of dance,” said Ray. In line with the ethos of REACH4DANCE some of the artists will be performing for people with special needs. These free events will happen around the Malaga area, before the gala shows. Tickets will also soon be on sale for a grand gala raffle for a flat screen HD ready television as the prize. The gala shows main sponsor is Brogan Properties. All profits raised will go to a local Cómpeta charity and Reach4Dance. * Tickets will be available soon. But seat reservations can been made at Todo Papel and Sugar and Spice. I
'd heard it on the “Grapevine” that new things were happening at E.G.O. Hair and Beauty so I thought I'd drop in to see what Mel and Andy have been up to over the past year. I was amazed at the changes. Where everyone else is contracting their businesses because of the “credit crunch”, Mel's and Andy's positive attitudes and far sightedness means they have expanded theirs and are thriving Mel is now a fully qualified manicurist and pedicurist as well as an eyebrow shaping and tinting and eyelash-tinting specialist. She can also give you that luscious lash look with semi permanent lashes, which last about a week, just right for that special event or holiday. Mel informed me that there's more to come as she has more beauty courses in the pipeline. The plan is to further develop an extended range of treatments to create a spa-like atmosphere where you can chill out and be pampered. Also coming soon there is a new range of nail care products including new funky colours for the imminent party season to add to your old favourites. It's worth watching this space for further announcement. Andy continues to be the ever attentive, brilliant hairdresser but has now used his years of knowledge and expertise to develope his own

range of organic hair products. These are based on natural essential oils and plant extracts. They also cleverly contain sunscreen properties so essential for protecting the hair in our Spanish climate. He has made a range of products for every hair type and condition and is always happy to advise which one suits you best. I tried DIVINE his deep nourishing mask treatment and the smell is to die for and the softness and shine of my hair is proof of its effectiveness. By special request Mel and Andy will be opening during the week between Christmas and New Year so you will be able to get your hair done or get a beauty treatment for that special party but it is advisable to book early to avoid disappointment. You will find the new email address helps here because as well as phoning 616 022 734 you can now book your appointments on line from anywhere in the world by emailing info@egohairandbeauty.com Great news for E.G.O.s many international clients. Look out for E.G.O.'s November offer. With every full head of highlights they are giving FREE either A COMPLETE NAIL SHAPE AND POLISH or if you prefer an INTENSIVE CONDITIONING HAIR TREATMENT. Remarkable Animals A
fter our article last month, where we described how remarkable animals are to recover from almost anything as long as their spirit is alive, I would like to tell Garfield´s story as he is as remarkable as can be. I first saw Garfield 5 years ago, when we took him out of his mother by a caesarean section as he and his 4 siblings refused to come out by themselves! Since then we have seen him for the usual things as vaccinations, neutering etc, until June 2010 when his and our faith in humans was seriously shattered. Garfield was brought into our clinic by a very upset owner; she had just found him with blood all over his face and assumed he had been hit by a car. He was in distress, obviously in a lot of pain, blood was oozing out of his nose, his left eye was very swollen and his face was covered in blood. We quickly treated him for shock and haemorrhage, and started to clean him up so we could assess the damage.

face, and I suddenly saw what had caused Garfield's accident, and I know this sounds as a cliché, the world seemed to come to a hold for several seconds. Garfield had not been run over, he had been shot right between his eyes! After the initial shock (ours and the owners!) we took x-rays to try and find the bullet, which somehow had managed to make it from the hole between the eyes all the way to down under his jaw. We decided not to touch it, and wait and see how he responded to the supportive treatments. I luckily don't know any human being who has been shot between the eyes, but I can imagine that a person wouldn't have done what Garfield did, which is go home after two days in hospital, bullet still in his head, a bit tired but otherwise happy and eating as nothing had happened. We decided not to take the bullet out as it is surrounded by important blood vessels and other delicate structures, and he seems to be just fine with that bit of extra metal in him… .
When we managed to clear all the blood of his

Rich, Dark & Earthy! Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh
T
here is something very compelling about making your own compost. That rich, dark earthy stuff is a gourmet meal for our plants and a deeply satisfying process for our physique; it's primordial ! But there are other reasons for composting. Firstly, waste disposal, worldwide, is reaching crisis levels. One third of space in landfills is made up of organic matter – stuff we can compost . The average household produces 100 kg of kitchen waste yearly. Compost recycles nutrients, organic matter and plant debris from our gardens. A fertile soil, rich in compost, will retain moisture better, it's alive and full of goodness for our plants and it's a healthy environment. It will loosen compacted clay soils and retains water in sandy ones; it stimulates healthy root growth and nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus are naturally produced, so few supplements are needed. It reduces water pollution caused by overuse of chemical fertilizers. Making your own compost soon becomes a habit - don't be scared off. It's not a difficult process – it's happening all around us, naturally!

The next step is how. Basically, you can start your compost heap in any container. For small gardens, where everything is 'on show' very pretty compost bins can be bought but, equally, a few old planks can be knocked together. The ideal size, for functionality and ease of use, is around one cubic metre. Set in a sunny, open position on a soil base so that earthworms can enter, assisting with aeration, and surplus liquids can drain off. Purchased bins should have air/drainage holes at the bottom and be set up on some old tiles to avoid blockage. Equally, a lid is important; in very wet weather to prevent saturation and, during drier weather, to retain moisture. Vary the materials used. Latest thinking is a 25 part brown mix with 1 part green mix, brown signifying carbon rich (dry items such as dried leaves, straw, woodchips, paper, light cardboard etc.) and green is nitrogen rich (wet items such as green debris and kitchen scraps). Aerate by turning; this helps to keep the process active. Too much carbon slows the process and too much nitrogen leads to bad smells! How to heat your home this Winter
Heating your home in Spain isn't always easy, most houses and villas are great in the summer however can be extremely cold in the winter. There are various ways to heat your home and this feature displays some of these options. We asked local heating companies to submit some information about what they supply and their advantages so as to give you, our readers, some knowledge and choice this winter.
Healthy and Economical Heating in a Nice Design (Redwell)
F
or five years we have been located in Torrox as the main distributor of the Redwell® Infrared Heating Systems for Spain. During this period we managed to establish the Redwell® products very well within the Spanish market with distributors in Madrid, Mallorca and on the Costa Blanca we have accumulated lot of references all along the Costa del Sol. We have installed systems for single rooms, apartments and houses, but also villas where the whole radiator heating system has been taken out and was completely replaced by Redwell® heaters. The excellent quality of the products, the increasing product range, extensive advice and our cooperation with qualified electricians assure the satisfaction and the confidence of our clients. About Redwell® Infrared Heating The Redwell® heaters are very economical to run and create a very healthy room climate. Why? In comparison to conventional heaters, infrared waves don't heat the air, but do heat the walls and furniture. People also absorb the heating waves which makes one feel nice and cosy. Walls and furniture store the heat much
longer than air and then releases it back into the living space. In this way, the walls remain dry and mould has no chance to spread. Another advantage is that the air does not circulate, therefore no dust is lifted into the air.Redwell® products are distributed in more than 35 countries of the world and have won several prices on international trade fairs. Exclusive Designs Redwell® Infrared Heating panels are available in different sizes, in 3 colours, and also in exclusive designs such as pictures, mirrors, globes, columns, blackboards, glass elements and others. The panels are beautifully made and flexible in application – they can heat whole houses, rooms or indeed just where you sit most. And at the same time they enhance your house by providing works of art for your walls, so that people who visit your home will feel the warmth but do not recognise that the heat comes from the pictures and mirrors hanging on your walls. Contact us or visit the exhibition in our shop! See our advert on page 41 Redwell - 952 539 742
Supply and Installation of Inverter Driven Heatpumps. (Cooltec Services)
T
hese systems not only provide airconditioning but also operate in reverse to provide very effective heating, which can save up to 70% on energy consumption compared with standard airconditioning and wet LPHW,electric, gas or oil. One of the main reasons for the substantial saving heat pumps can provide is the inverter driven compressors and fan moters. This controls the system to typically between 15% to 120% speed dependant on the load
requirements and eliminates the conventional stop/start operation, whereby high energy consumption ensues, this ensures minimal impact to the enviroment, compared to standard airconditioning and means you can be rest assured that you are saving money as well as benefiting the enviroment. In addition to the great savings heat pumps can provide they can also be used in conjunction with heat pump boilers and solar panels allowing the provision of domestic hot water and under floor heating.
Enter the world of new technology, maximum efficiency and comfort with the minimum possible consumption. (Malagaclima)

The Sustainable Low Cost Solution (Tecnicas) The unseen enemy of heating is moisture. Water vapour seeps into our constructions unnoticed and unchallenged. We feel cold so we turn up the temperature, warming the air which attracts more moisture, it´s a costly spiral of heating fighting nature. When it is time for bed, the heating is turned off and the moisture turns to condensation. Heating alone does not provide the comfort we are looking for in our Andalusian homes. Self sufficient and safe Works even when you are not there! If you are away for longer periods, thesystem automatically introduces warm, dry air every time the sun is shining.f the property is unoccupied during the hot summer months it can be left running a low speed for ventilation and dehumidification purposes, or simply switched off. Easy to install No plumbing No connections to mains electricity. info@tecnicasmaro.com Grants available - We are authorized installers See our advert on page 40 Tecnicas - Tel/Fax: 952 52 95 38
The Winter Weather One of the best things about the region of Andalucia is its weather. This stunning area of Spain has some of the best in Spain and with an around 300330 days of sunshine per year it makes a perfect destination for everyone. The area has three very distinctive weather zones but one thing is certain, you can enjoy long hot summers and pleasant winters. It is a wonderful area where in winter you can sunbath on the costal resorts in the morning and within 2 hours you can be skiing down the slopes of the Sierra Nevada’s. In November and March the highest average daily temperature reaches 21 degrees. However, temperatures can drop to single figures during the day in winter and can be lower still at night. Throughout the winter there is an average of about six hours sun per day. The year starts cold in Spain. Hardest hit are the high altitude central cities like Madrid, Toledo and Salamanca or, more precisely, the countryside around these cities (cities usually protect themselves a little with their own warmth). In Madrid it is not uncommon to get a mini 'heatwave' (of sorts) in January or February when you can at least sit on an outside terraza drinking coffee without the need of a coat!
To the north and south of these regions things are a little warmer. Andalusia will still be reasonably warm and sunny while the north coast will be warmed slightly by the Atlantic. Galicia (in the north-west) is extremely wet - expect up to 20 days a month of rain during the winter in these parts.
Also, Spain does get snow in the winter. The likelihood of snow depends largely on where you are in the country. Spain's mountainous regions are the most likely regions for snow (which is lucky for the ski resorts!). Andalusia has little (apart from in the Sierra Nevada mountains) and Madrid and Salamanca are usually too dry (which means beautiful blue skies even when it is freezing! The north coast on the whole is too warm - you get more rain here than snow. However, when snow does hit this region, as it did in January 2006, huge quantities came.(several feet).

“HERE IS THE NEWS…” Part 2 The Daily Mail – “Read by the spouses of the people running the country” Psychometrically, there is no significant difference between readers of The Daily Mail and those who don't read it. First published in 1896 as a broadsheet it is the UK's second biggest selling newspaper after The Sun with average daily readership of 1,993,698. and is the biggest selling British paper in Spain. It was aimed at the newly literate "lower-middle class market resulting from mass education, combining a low retail price with plenty of competitions, prizes and promotional gimmicks". It was aimed at women at outset and still has a UK readership of more than 50% women. It was the first newspaper to hit 1 million in daily sales. Politically the newspaper is conservative and sometimes thought to be right of Attila the Hun, probably because of its apparent pre-war support by the then owner, Lord Rothermere, for Hitler and Mussolini. The paper was also sympathetic to Oswald Mosley and The British Union of Fascists. Nicknamed The Daily Hate or Hate Mail as the founder, Lord Northcliffe, said its winning formula gave its readers a “daily hate”. The Daily Express – “Read by people who think the country should be run how it used to be” Readers are said to be “sensing” types – focusing on information gleaned from the five senses and

practical applications. It was founded in 1900 as a broadsheet before switching to tabloid in 1977 and politically is a right wing paper. It has a circulation of 671,414 in UK and was the first British newspaper to print a crossword. Richard Desmond took over the paper in 2000, which led to much controversy as he owned many pornographic publications as well as the most popular UK pornographic TV channel, Television X. It has a reputation of printing front page stories relating to conspiracy theories around Princess Diana's death and has been nicknamed Diana Express or Di'ly Express. In November 2006, while all other papers reported the death sentence handed to Saddam Hussain the Express led with “Spies Cover Up Diana 'Murder' “. The Daily Mirror – “Read by people who know that they, the working class, really run the country” Readers are said to be “sensing” types like the Daily Express. It was founded in 1903 as a newspaper run by women for women and was meant to be “a mirror of feminine life”, hence the name. Politically, it has consistently supported the Labour Party since 1945 and has a UK circulation of 1,242,446. Twice in its history it has changed its name to just The Mirror and has changed the red top mast

to black to disassociate itself from “red top” journalism. It has since changed back to the traditional red top. Nicknamed The Moron after its previous editor Piers Morgan' s nickname Piers “Moron” Morgan and Kenneth Clarke's description of The Mirror as “a paper read by morons”. The Sun – “Read by people who don't care who run the country so long as they do it topless” Readers are sensing or perceiving types and has the largest readership in the UK and tenth worldwide with 3,009,987 readers, 2.9m in the ABC1 demographic. The Sun was first published as a broadsheet in 1964 before becoming a tabloid in 1969 and is famed for its headlines including, “Freddie Star Ate My Hamster”, “Stick It Up Your Junta” during the Falklands war and “If Kinnock Wins Today Will The Last Person To Leave Britain Please Turn Out The Lights”. The first topless Page 3 girl appeared in 1970 and was German born Stephanie Rahn. Politically it was initially a Labour supporter but became an ardent supporter of Thatcher and followed the Conservative Party. The paper supported Blair in the 1997 election and subsequent elections before backing the Tories in 2009. Nicknamed The Buttered Bun or Super Soar Away Sun after its ad campaign.
The Daily Star – “Read by people who think The Sun is a bit too upmarket” Readers are sensing types and the paper was launched in 1978 where it sold out its first print run of 1,400,000. Predominantly a right wing paper little is written about the paper as it's doubtful whether it really contains any real news causing controversy with people such as Jeffrey Archer, the McCanns and Gatwick airport where the paper was removed after showing a computer generated image of a plane going through an ash cloud just after flights started again after the ash cloud from the Iclandic volcano. The Daily Sport – “Read by people who think that Elvis is running the country from his secret lunar bunker assisted by a team of topless aliens” The Sport readers are more likely to be intuitive and perceiving types. It can barely be called a newspaper and focuses on celebrities bad behavior and toilet humour. Famous for headlines such as “World War Two Bomber Found On Moon” and fake pictures of naked celebrities. Circulation is only about 84,000 and is more closely linked to “lads mags” such as Loaded and Viz.

lthough we would like to think we are all quite savvy when it comes to buying things from shops we still fall for the “new improved”, “new recipe” or even “new packaging” graphics splashed over the items we buy. I must confess to not getting the “new packaging” one. It is a bit like somebody you do not like wearing a t-shirt that has “new t-shirt” written on it. As if this proclamation would suddenly make you think “actually he is quite a decent bloke”. The cynic in me usually assumes that new improved means the manufacturers have found a cheaper way of making it – usually smaller than before – and what about new recipe? Does this mean that before the product was a bit ropey? A few years back I bought my usual carton of Ribena Light and noticed that it had new improved flavour printed on it. I opened it, tasted it and did not like it so I went home and emailed SmithKline Beecham (now GlaxoSmithKline) the makers and told them I did not like it. I realised it was probably futile sending the email but at the end of the day the customer is always right, right? I received a very polite reply stating that the new flavour had been tested by thousands of members of the public and that my view was in the minority. I replied that I appreciated that but I would not be buying it again. I wonder how many such emails companies get from weirdoes like me every week?

Another constantly improving item is washing powder. It strikes me that if the washing powder development budget was applied to finding cures for the numerous serious diseases that exist we could soon have a much healthier world, albeit with slightly grubbier clothes. There must be thousands of newly qualified scientists leaving university with high hopes of changing the world before being wooed into the world of washing powder development. But I mean how much whiter can we wish our towels to be? This must mean that in the 1950's our white towels must have been a dark shade of grey. If your clothes are still stain-ridden, there are additives you put in with the washing now. You may have seen the adverts where a slightly stressed mother (whatever will the other mothers think when they see your grey washing on the line you useless housewife you?) cannot get the grass stains out of little Johnnies trousers – now little Johnny, off you go and play football in your new white trousers. Think stressed mother, think! Anyway, then a lady dressed in pink strolls casually into her kitchen asking if she is having trouble with her washing. In real life at this point you would shout at her and call the police but without missing a beat she entrusts little Johnnies trousers to her (maybe I should be a bit more trusting). Before we know it we see Johnnie in said trousers climbing a tree the thoughtless little git. No wonder your mum is on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Another selling method is bombarding us with statistics such 8 out of 10 cat owners that expressed a preference chose Kati-kins cat food. Let's not dwell on the 873 owners that said “no I just feed my cat the cheapest food in the shop normally”. There are a number of advertisements on TV at the moment for hair dye and make-up that usually have some digitally enhanced super model filmed in high contrast flicking her artificially shiny hair or ridiculously long eye lashes around. At the bottom of the screen things like “not real footage” or flashed up for a micro-second before statement such as “chosen as the best hair dye is made” followed by more small writing on the screen “73% of the 35 people questioned agree” which means that 20.23 woman agreed. Actually I think I used to go out with .23 of a woman but that is not important right now.
but then sell most people what they can afford, a 'A' class or 1 series. When I was a company car driver my colleagues would often pay extra to scrape the base BMW or Mercedes model and then pay extra to have the badge removed so that people could not tell they were driving an entry level vehicle. The fools. Adverts for Lynx, or Axe as it is called in Spain – actually I think that they would sell more if it was called Axe in the UK, but I digress – suggest (mainly to teenage boys of course) 'buy this and you will be able to attract girls' And we all fall for it. In my day I tried Old Spice, Aqua Manda and Brut but aftershave on a 12 year-old is not a great babe magnet, trust me. Similarly I succumbed to a Wrangler jeans advert and bought a skin-tight pair of drainpipe jeans. I did not pull any more girls but was able to do a fantastic impression of the Bee Gees.
Advertising at its most basic is the 'if you buy this product you get this lifestyle' type of advert used Andy Wilkes by luxury car manufacturers and by men's toiletry manufacturers like Lynx. Car marques such as Mercedes and BMW show how great life could be if you had a 'S' class or 7 series vehicle

Lisa Eldeleman presents her..... Open Sudio Day
I
t was my pleasure to interview Lisa Edelman this month, a young artist living in Competa with her family. Many of you may have seen her working part time in Portichuelo Ferreteria, seen her as Cinderella in the local pantomime or singing in the choir One Voice. However, her talents don't end with fluent Spanish and local amateur dramatics, she is an excellent craftswomen and ceramist and this is where she hopes her future lies. I was invited up to her studio in Competa to discuss the open studio day she is hosting on th Saturday 27 November. Lisa will be opening up her home for a whole day from 10.30 to 6.30pm to exhibit her new collection of work. Not only will she be showcasing her ceramics but also on sale will be original handmade giftware, perfect for that individual Christmas present. There will also be a range of porcelain Christmas decorations, garlands with handmade beading, jewellery and many other gift ideas. This is also your chance to commission Lisa for that special present to be

ready in time for Christmas. Lisa's home is extremely easy to find. It is at the top of the village on the only road up to the football pitch, where there are 3 houses on the left hand side and hers is the first. However, if you have any trouble finding it give Lisa a call and she will direct you in. So where did it all begin for Lisa? “I have always made things but for quite a while I wasn't sure where this was going to lead to. I did Fine Art A-level and afterwards an Art Foundation course but after this I wasn't sure what to do or where to study Amateur dramatics had also been an interest for Lisa; she belonged to a youth theatre group, so when a Performing Arts course came up at Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) which encompassed, stage design, costume and props, she thought this would be a perfect opportunity to combine all her skills. However, there were only 28 places offered a year with over 17,000 students applying.

Lisa did get accepted, but within the 6 months of being granted a place to the start of the course she began to realise that she wasn't yet ready to specialise within her craft. On the first day of the course it all felt wrong, so she didn't go back! This decision led to a year off, giving her time to research other courses more thoroughly. The problem seemed that once studying got to University level you had to focus on one skill; multi-disciplinary courses just didn't seem to be readily available. Lisa was quite keen to extend her skills level rather than reduce them. However, this year off proved invaluable experience for Lisa as she took on a craft stall at a local art fair in Manchester where once a week she would go to sell her handmade items, such as fabric bags, jewellery and ceramics. At the end of the year she had discovered a perfect course at University of Falmouth, called Contemporary Crafts which encompassed different skills such as glassware, fine metalwork and ceramics. Over the 3 year course Lisa did eventually chose to specialise and that was in Porcelain and Digital Technologies. This combination of traditional and contemporary design skills has allowed her to develop new techniques within a very traditional practice, making her work unique. Lisa now develops her work through the use of computer aided design and then hand building the items so each one is unique. She has developed new processes within ceramic practice which now are being taught and used at Falmouth. It then comes as no surprise that after graduating, she was invited to join the

New Designers exhibition in London, in July of last year. Places at these exhibitions are incredibly sought after and provides a stepping stone for young crafts people. At this exhibition she was spotted and interviewed by the Society of Designer Craftsmen, again a renowned association incredibly important to be part of if you are trying to make it professionally. Lisa was accepted to become a member of this society and was subsequently asked to exhibit at The Mall Galleries in London, in January of this year. Also a result of New Designers she was asked to exhibit at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Gallery in last November. Both exhibitions resulted in the selling of work and this year she was presented with a Licentiate Award from the Society of Designers. After preparing and exhibiting for the two major exhibitions in England, Lisa came back to Spain this year to be with family and friends where she also took part in the Competa Art Walkabout. Now she is currently making contacts in Malaga where there appears to be an up and coming Contemporary Art scene, and in the meantime she is preparing for her own open studio at her home on the 27th November. Lisa showed me a sample of her ceramics, they are superb, unique beautiful pieces that can be used or displayed in anyone's home. Please take time on the 27th of November to visit and support Lisa, to view her work and have a glass of mulled wine!

WE NEED YOUR HELP A.P.A.Ri.V is a small, registered animal protection society devoted to the care and welfare of abandoned, neglected and abused dogs. Our refuge is located just outside of Rincon de la Victoria where nearly 60 dogs are sheltered. We also have a charity shop located in Rincon de la Victoria from which all the sales proceeds directly benefit the dogs. We rely solely on private donations as we do not receive any governmental or municipal funding. We have a very small team of very dedicated volunteers who devote their time at the refuge and at the charity shop. However, we are in dire need of more people to help us. If you enjoy being with dogs, perhaps spending some time at the refuge would interest you. Or perhaps helping in our shop is more suited to you. We also need people who would be interested in planning and organizing fundraiser events to help pay for improvements to the refuge as well as such things as medications, veterinarian expenses and food. Perhaps you could help us with our website or help transport the dogs to the airport when they have been re-homed. We simply do not have enough volunteers to do the endless tasks that need to be done in order to improve the lives of our dogs. There are so many other ways to help. Each of our dogs needs and deserves a good home. If adoption is not possible, please consider fostering a dog until a permanent home can be found. Or how about being a sponsor for a particular dog

any donationsto A.P.A.Ri.V are greatly appreciated given that they are the lifeline of our association. Can you help us?? If so, please contact Lola at 657-219-267 or Pam at 952-51 46 71. Please also visit our website at www.apariv.org to read more about us/
DENNIS “ Sweet” is the best word to describe this little fellow. Dennis and his three siblings came ourway from the Velez-Malaga area in 2009.
His brothers and sister have been adopted, leavingonly Dennis behind. He has a lovely, quiet nature and is very affectionate. He is quite obedient and gets along well with other dogs. Dennis is a little over a year old, weighs about 6 kilos and is castrated and fully vaccinated. He will make a wonderful addition to any family.

Backgammon Club The test flight of the Competa Backgammon Club got off to a flying start on Tuesday 19th October. The venue, El Pilon, is now running to its winter “timetable” so the restaurant is closed Tuesday nights making it ideal for those trying to avoid Champions League football. New members with limited or no knowledge of Backgammon are made very welcome as instruction is given and games played in a very friendly, non-competitive atmosphere.

Restaurateur Christian Griffiths may fancy himself as a bit of a Leeds version of Omar Sharif but in reality his ability is more like the Sheriff of Nottingham. Just for the record Gilly Rowbottom trounced all her male opponents and celebrated with a large complementary glass of red wine. (No change there then!) Cómpeta Municipal Swimming Pool
T
he swimming pool in Cómpeta opened it’s doors a couple of years ago, however for various reasons it only opened for limited periods in the summer school holidays. However, as from last month, the pool opened 6 days a week to the public and is also now open on Sundays for Scuba Diving Lessons. There are a number of different classes for adults and swimming lessons for children And for those of you that do not wish to be involved in the clubs and classes you can simply pay 3 euros when you arrive and use the pool at your leisure. The pool has unique retractable roof, so for the majority of the summer it stays open and in the winter it stays firmly closed! The pool is also heated. There are no digital thermometers but I would hazard a guess at the temperature being around 30C
Benefits of Swimming Swimming can be a really hard workout, during half an hour of vigorous swimming a 10 stone individual burns 360 calories, the equivalent of running at 12 kph for the same time. The cooling effect of the water means that you’re not consciously sweating as much as you would in the gym, allowing you to exercise longer and harder. The water supports you as you swim, so although you’ve just had a workout your muscles will feel more relaxed than if you’d just left an exercise class.
Once you have your payment receipt from your bank, take it back to the pool and you will be issued with your pass. There is always a qualified lifeguard on duty. Please note that you are required to wear a swimming hat, which are available to buy at the pool at 3 Euros each, and you are also asked to If you intend to use the pool on a regular basis, wear suitable footwear (flip-flops or similar) when you can buy a monthly, quarterly or annual pass which makes using the pool even cheaper. All you walking from the changing room to the pool area. need to do is call into the reception area of the The pool, is located in the centre of the village, just pool, pick a the price list and then make the behind the post office and next to the new sport hall relevant payment at your local bank to the that is currently under construction. The Art of Article Writing
W
riting articles for the Grapevine has earned me a loyal fan-base which includes my sister, my dad and if questioned harshly enough, my wife. It is a bit of a thankless task though as many locals are now aware of my work antics, my coveting of racing bikes and my thoughts on many thorny issues such as robots and dressing up as Spider-man. Occasionally I do get asked if I am the one the writes the articles for the Grapevine, “I am” I modestly answer and often their reply is “oh I loved your article about the Malaga 10K run and the ones about football and darts” before turning to their partner and saying “this is Alick that writes in the Grapevine”. I have long given up trying to explain that that was not me and now just take the glory. Sod it; when you get to my age any praise is worth having – “Mr Wilkes? Didn't you used to be in Emmerdale farm?” “Ooh arrr love, yes that were me. Now get off my land!” Sometimes writing these articles can take an hour or so; sometimes they can take weeks. Many people (approximately none) have asked me how I go about crafting one of my articles, so here is a typical writing process that might act as an inspiration to people (or if any young people are reading it might galvanize them into trying harder at school). The deadline for submission of an article is the 10th of the month and on my calendar there is a big red ring on that date inside which it says 'Pay Telefonica bill'; underneath that it says 'Write Grapevine article'. Like any other deadline this day has a habit of suddenly being just a day or so

away, so I normally start preparing the next article a week or so after sending the last one. 19 days until deadline: Sit down at desk with pad. Write to do list putting “write Grapevine article” at the top. After completing list I complete a couple of quick win tasks to get a few things crossed off. I call my sister; I buy a new gas bottle and then put a Spanish plug on the toaster we brought with us from England 5 years ago leaving just 15 appliances to change. Add 'buy more Spanish plugs' to list. Realise siesta is over and begin to work. 16 days until deadline: Have a few amusing ideas for article. Write the words 'cheese', 'helicopter' and 'bin liners' onto my pad. 15 days until deadline: Check email. Find that a friend has emailed an utterly pointless but very entertaining video game involving penguins. 10 days until deadline: Finally score 20,000 points in penguin game to reveal secret level. Cross of 'play penguin game' and underline 'write Grapevine article'. 8 days until deadline: Go out for a drink with some friends. Confess to not being able to think of subject for article. Get very drunk and discuss many hilarious potential subjects for article. 7 days until deadline: Wake up with the hang over from hell. Have no recollection of the night before except for sitting in the little metal car plant holder outside of Bar Alfonso's. Spend rest of day trying to convince my wife that I am not in the slightest bit hung over. Grab shopping lost go

shopping in the afternoon. Successfully buy milk and bin liners, but informed that Portichuelo's currently do not have any helicopters in stock. 5 days until deadline: Cannot find my pad with extensive notes pertaining to this month's article. Switch on PC and fire up Microsoft Word then log-on to email and send message to friend berating him for sending you silly computer games. He replies mocking your personal best score on the game. Find Christmas card list and cross his name off. 3 days until deadline: Receive email from the Grapevine reminding you of the impending deadline. Compose witty, excuse laden response explaining why article might be late but do not send it as I decide that there are still 3 days to go and I still might be able to meet it. 2 days until deadline: Receive phone call from our delivery company in Malaga saying that delivery for the shop is on its way 2 days early. It is the delivery driver's first time to Cümpeta. 3 hours later meet confused and previously lost driver; unload delivery, eat dinner, go to bed. In the middle of the night I wake up, my mind
buzzing with article ideas. I sit at the computer and begin to furiously type an article about the penguin computer game. buzzing with article ideas. I sit at the computer and begin to furiously type an article about the penguin computer game. Deadline day: Send article to Grapevine after wife has proof-read it and advised you to remove the part about me playing the penguin game at 3 in the morning dressed as Spider-man. I am beginning to suspect she thinks I am a bit weird. Receive reply from Helen at the Grapevine saying “Thanks for the article” this means that she thinks it is rubbish and will only print it when there is a shortage of articles (this was written in 2007) but, phew, at least it has been sent. I check the calendar to see when my next Telefonica bill is due. Oh my god! I only have 20days until I need to write the next one. Now if I can just find that bloody pad….. Andy Wilkes

Cocktails at Alberdini by Enmanuel Lopez Ruiz
Alberdini-alcohol free A MOCTAIL is the official name for an alcohol free cocktail. This is Enmanuel’s own recipe because a lot of his friends came drinking cocktails with their pregnant women who where looking for something else then a juice‌, but of course you can use the same liquors WITH alcohol!!
Take a large squared glass of 33 cl. Fill the glass with 3 big ice cubes Add 60 ml. of blackberry liquor (licor de mora). Add 60 ml. of apple liquor (licor de manzana). Add 15 ml. of grenadine. Squish half a lime into the glass. Fill the glass up with soda water (casera).
Decorate the glass with a large straw and a slice of apple on a cocktail stick.
THE APARTMENT!
THE OLD MAN
A married businessman meets a beautiful girl and agrees to spend night with her for £3,250.
After his exam the doctor said to the elderly man: 'You appear to be in good health. Do you have any medical concerns you would like to ask me about?'
He spends the night with her but before he leaves, he tells her that he does not have any cash with him, but he will have his secretary write a check and mail it to her, calling the payment "RENT FOR APARTMENT"
'In fact, I do,' said the old man. 'After I have sex I am usually cold and chilly, and then, after I have sex with her the second time, I am usually hot and sweaty.'
On the way to the office he regrets what he has done, realising that the whole event was not worth the price, so he has his secretary send a cheque for £250 and enclosed the following note........................
After examining his elderly wife, the doctor said: 'Everything appears to be fine. Do you have any medical concerns that you would like to discuss with me?"
"Dear Madam, Enclosed you will find a cheque in the amount of £250 for rent of your apartment. I am not sending the amount agreed upon, because when I rented the apartment, I was under the impression that it had never been occupied, that there was plenty of heat and that it was small enough to make me feel cosy and at home. However, I found out that it had been previously occupied, that there wasn't any heat, and that it was entirely too large".
The lady replied that she had no questions or concerns.
Upon receipt of the note, the girl immediately returned the cheque for £250 with the following note.................... "Dear Sir, First of all, I cannot understand how you expect a beautiful apartment to remain unoccupied indefinitely. As for the heat, there is plenty of it, if you know how to turn it on. Regarding the space, the apartment is indeed of regular size, but if you don't have enough furniture to fill it, please don't blame the landlady. Send the rent in full or we will be forced to contact your present landlady".

The doctor then said to her: 'Your husband had an unusual concern. He claims that he is usually cold and chilly after having sex with you the first time, and then hot and sweaty after the second time. Do you know why?' "Oh that crazy old fart,' she replied. 'That's because the first time is usually in January and the second time is in August.’

We are relocating and sadly need to find a home for our beloved cats. They are looking for a campo home with someone who is prepared to spend the time needed to settle them into a new environment – preferably one without other animals or small children. Both cats have been neutered, are clean, incredibly affectionate and gentle and spend a lot of time in each other's company. We will miss them very much but will be happy if we can find them a new and loving home.

SOCIAL AND FAMILY ACTION DEPARTMENT In Velez Malaga they have established a protocol for those suffering from Senile Squalor Syndrome. This disorder usually affects elderly people who live alone and in extreme poverty. It is characterized by extreme self-neglect, domestic squalor, social withdrawal, apathy, compulsive hoarding of rubbish and lack of shame.
RECREATIONAL PLAN Nerja Town Hall has a €267,000 renovation plan to convert Calle Antonio Millon into more of a recreational area than a street. The estimated time for completion is four months. The street will be converted into a square, although different from that of the nearby Tutti Fruti, according to Infrastructure Councillor Jose Alberto Tome. The first phase of this project will begin in Castilla Perez and Fray Junipero Serra.
BIKE RENTAL SYSTEM Bicycle rental systems are successfully taking off all over Europe, Velez-Malaga is also keen to introduce such a project so that its residents cycle around the city. The City Council currently has a fleet of 100 bicycles spread out over 10 bicycle stations across the city.

Local News FIRE IN CÓMPETA CAMPO LAST MONTH AS TOLD BY LINDA PAYNE So there we were with friends visiting from the UK sitting on our patio, chatting and admiring views, when we noticed a spiral of smoke across the hill. Someone's sending a smoke signal our friends joked. In the time it took us to explain about the danger of fires after a long hot summer, getting a license etc this small bonfire started spreading up the hill. Within 3 minutes it became a serious fire with flames on 2 sides and dense smoke we could hear and smell it from a long way away. Suddenly people and cars began leaving surrounding houses and a couple of minutes later the flames had reached the Ridge Road between Competa and Sayalonga. A 4x4 full of fire-fighters appeared followed rapidly by the helicopter with it container of water. By this time the wind was blowing strongly. Trees were engulfed and the whole area disappeared into the smoke.Twenty times the helicopter flew to and fro with water, very skilfully in the wind dropping its load on the flames and was assisted by then yellow fire watch plan. The fireman stayed for another hour putting out little blazes which sprung up here and there until there was just a blackened charred hillside left. Small bonfire to frightening fire in the space of 5 minutes. What a salutary lesson for everyone roundabout! The
Guardia Civil arrived to talk to the man who lit the fire; we'd love to know what happened to him.
FINAL SAYALONGA NEWSLETTER Due to the economic crisis and other pressures, the September edition of the Sayalonga Newsletter was the last. The Newsletter was started in 2000 as a vehicle to encourage integration and provide a means of exchange between all local residents. This aim has been largely successful due to of a group of volunteers, together with support and financial aid from the Ayuntamiento.
