Happy New Year! Hope you have all had a fabulous time over the Christmas period. In our house we still have Kings Day to come on the 6th January but it wont be anything like the Christmas celebrations we had in the UK with our family where we had a brilliant time. So with a new year will there be a new you ? In this months magazine we have an article on how to help you keep your resolutions this year. The most popular and obvious resolutions are lose weight and get fit, quit smoking, learn something new, eat healthier and diet, get out of debt and save money, spend more time with family, travel to new places, be less stressed, volunteer and drink less. Although these are all important things to do my advice is choose one or two and stick to it, choosing too many is overwhelming and unachievable. Or the alternative is don't make any resolutions at all that way you cant fail ! This month we have the Quarterly Property Feature with more properties than ever advertised by reputable Estate Agents in the area. Is 2017 the year you find your home in the Sun? It's a great time to buy and due to recent world events Spain is more popular than ever for foreigners looking for a place to move to or as a holiday destination. Wishing all our readers and advertisers a Happy New Year and a prosperous 2017. Enjoy and keep reading The Editor .

NEWS IN SPAIN This months update
A
little before nine o’clock on Tuesday night, Antonio Gutiérrez found himself facing a welcome dilemma. Might he, a waitress asked, have room for a second helping of pudding? Gutiérrez, who had already seen off a plate of pasta, a fish stew and a slice of cake, gave it some thought. The option would have been unremarkable for most diners, but for him, it was entirely novel – as was the cafe in which he was eating. By day, the Robin Hood restaurant, which sits on a side street near the centre of Madrid, is a typical Spanish bar: coffee and croquetas, a fruit machine, cigarette machine, and a leg of ham dozing under a tea towel on the counter. But at night, it transforms itself into a pioneering place where homeless people such as Gutiérrez, 40, from Extremadura, can dine, free of charge, at tables set with flowers, metal cutlery and proper glasses. Its business model – using breakfast and lunch takings from paying customers to fund free evening meals for the homeless – is simple enough. Its aim, however, is a little more ambitious.

adrid’s regional government is to double its compensation fund for farmers who lose animals to wolves after a steep increase in fatal attacks in the last year. Wolves, hunted to the brink of extinction over the past seven decades, have begun to reappear in the region in recent years. Their return has been most keenly noticed by farmers, whose sheep, goats, cows and horses are increasingly falling prey to the 20 or so wolves thought to roam the autonomous community of Madrid. The region, which covers 3,000 sq miles at the centre of Spain, contains mountains, valleys, hills, forests, pastures and farmland, as well as the capital city. Wolf attacks have risen from under 20 in 2012 and 2013 to 91 in 2015 and 209 in 2016. There were also four attacks in 2016 attributed to vultures.
C
atholics seeking to confess their sins to a priest in Spain can now turn to a new app to find the nearest available cleric. Confesor GO detects a user's location and shows the location of priests around them who are ready to listen to their sins as well as the shortest route to get to him. It also
provides basic information about the priest, including his name, date of birth and the year he was ordained as well as a list of the Ten Commandments. The priest may be in a confessional in a church or some place down the street or at a park in your city," reads the description of the app on Apple's iTunes store. The app launched on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a national holiday in Spain which celebrates the belief that the Virgin Mary was conceived without sin. A beta version has been downloaded several thousand times since it was made available to the public in late September. The bishop of the northern city of San Sebastian, Jose Ignacio Munilla, is one of around 100 clerics across Spain who have so far signed up to use the app to signal when they are available to hear confession, which usually involves admitting sins to a priest in a confessional booth.Father Ricardo Latorre, who came up with the app, said he hopes the service will become available in other Spanishspeaking nations in Latin America next year.

arcelona city council will fine holiday rental websites Airbnb and HomeAway €600,000 (£509,000) each for offering unlicensed accommodation, it has announced, as it steps up its campaign against tourism saturation. Announcing the move on Catalunya Ràdio on Thursday, Left-wing mayor Ada Colau said it was “unacceptable that there are thousands of apartments operating illegally without a permit, not paying taxes and causing a nuisance to neighbours”.Barcelona council also said that the two companies were “repeat offenders” after both were fined €30,000 last December for the same offence. Under Catalan regional rules, any home rented out to visitors must be included in a tourism registry and be licensed.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS Happy New Year
W
e'd like to thank everyone who came along and supported us at this year's Cómpeta Christmas Market, where we raised a whopping great €1508,71. Massive thanks to our amazing team of volunteers, who worked so hard behind the scenes and on the day to make it such a success. If you came to the event I'm sure you'll agree that Santa's helpers, Julie Lillie, Alison Hawthorne and Julia Ruane were quite a sight to behold. Dressing up for hours on end like a reindeer, a mince pie or an elf is no mean feat and not something to be sniffed at! Try it some time; it's sweaty. The King of Raffles, Kevin Deavin, once again excelled himself and encouraged the entire village to buy our raffle tickets. How does he do it? He even managed to sell some on top of a mountain! I swear the man is a legend. We're immensely grateful to all the local businesses and individuals who donated raffle prizes for the event and you

can read their names at the bottom of this page. The day wouldn't have been complete without the appearance of Santa, who was persuaded to come along for the sleigh ride by Dave Bulmer. (Yea, y'all knew it was him). Thank you, Santa! And last, but by no means least, we offer a very special thanks to our Mama Christmas and chief kitten-nurturer Sandiey, who started preparations for the event way back in May and despite her recent ill-health was committed to overseeing the whole thing from start to finish – even at one time from a hospital bed. And she even dressed up as a Christmas cracker on the day. What a cracker she is! Sandiey has now decided to retire as our Wednesday shop volunteer, so we'd like to take this opportunity to thank her for everything she's contributed over the years to the work of Action for Animals. We've lost count of how many kittens lives she's saved and we salute her for making every Christmas stall we've had better than the year before. We hope she'll continue to be involved in the charity in whatever way she can. We hope you enjoy the photos!

We wish you all a very happy new year and we thank you for your continued and hugely valued support. See you all in 2017! It is how you deal with it that counts. Follow these 10 tips to get organized and energized, then begin! 1- Get your ‘to do’ list out of your head and into a system- Your brain is more efficient with less clutter just like a computer. Go through the areas of your home and jot down what needs to be done in each area. 2- Set your priorities- What needs to be handled first? What is draining your energy more than anything else? What is most important? Mark your priorities. When it comes to clutter clearing off a countertop, table top, or the floor can be very motivating once you see the difference. It energizes you to continue forward. 3- Begin with one small space you KNOW you CAN doOverwhelm causes paralysis so
18 The Grapevine
shift thoughts to a place that supports you to take action. Instead of focusing on the ‘can’t’ focus on the ‘can’. Choose one small area that you know you can do. 4- Everything has a home- Give every item a home. Choose a home that is convenient, saves you time, and makes sense. Hardware with hardware. School supplies with school supplies. The hammer is not in a living room drawer (unless, of course, it makes sense). 5- Some tasks are easier than you think- If you watch tv in the evening pull out a drawer or grab a pile. Sort through it as quickly as possible, clean it, and put it back nice and neat. Just like that!
Sort into piles and have boxes/ bags handy for: trash, donations, give aways, recycling, things to sell, things going to another space, etc. Avoid the temptation to reminisce long on what you find. It can steal your time. 8- Rejuvenate and reward yourself- Take breaks every 90 minutes to rejuvenate. Reward yourself along the way. Take time to feel good about what you are accomplishing. Remember how great it feels and allow that to motivate you in days to come. 9- Put systems in place to maintain- When you create a home for something inform other family members. When you add new shoes, clothing item, kitchen item, toyScience Articles, etc. to a cabinet or closet get rid of something.
6- Get your head in the gameFocus on what it will look like at completion. Thinking of the task itself may bring up negative thoughts and feelings whereas seeing the space as you want it can work as a magnet to pull you in action towards that ideal end result.
Organize life one step at a time. You can do it! Take action to create the environment you get excited to come home to…. Starting Now!
7- Move through clutter quickly-

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF E.G.O. HAIR AND BEAUTY Happy Anniversary E.G.O
1
0 years ago Mel and Andy first opened their salon doors to their customers so Happy Anniversary e.g.o hair and beauty! They have come a long way in ten years. Mel and Andy came out to Spain last September 10 years ago and as Andy was a qualified hairdresser it was only natural to set up business straight away. The aim was to be mobile for 6 months to a year, to test the market and the need for another hairdresser in town, build a client base and hopefully be able to open a Salon sometime in the future. However it soon became apparent this plan had to be adjusted to opening a salon after only a couple of months! Andy had attained so many clients he couldn’t fit them in, as he had to travel to them. So the need for a salon where people came to him just made more sense. Once they decided a premise was essential, Mel swung into action and located a place, furniture and all the necessary equipment and within a month they were open! Business was great for a good
22 The Grapevine
few years and then, as with all businesses they saw the effects of recession, but rather than rest on their laurels they expanded! Mel had already been on some training courses in Spain and soon provided manicures and pedicures but in order for the beauty side of the business to expand they needed a bigger Salon with a private treatment area. This premise was easy to find as the next door local was now empty and with a little readjustment a private treatment area could be created alongside a larger Salon area for both hair and beauty treatments. Mel attended further training courses on waxing and facials so with the opening of the new larger salon she was able to offer an extensive list of beauty services. Most recently she has trained in the eye lash lift which I can say from personal experience gave excellent results. The private treatment area has proved successful not only for Mel’s treatments but also for other therapists that have wanted to work with them. Over the last 5 years Andy has researched and trained in crystal,
spiritual and massage healing along with providing energy treatments on houses, businesses and pets. He also teaches all these spiritual services, except massage and is currently building a website to reflect this side of the business www internationalholistichealing.com but can be seen on face book at International Holistic Healing with Andy Dabeba. Overall the business over the last 10 years has proved successful due to Mel and Andy expanding and diversifying and of course through the support of their customers. To show their appreciation they are offering 10% off all their hair and beauty services and products in the salon for the whole month of January “ 10 years and 10 % off seems like a natural idea to me” Mel said! Also please join them for drinks and nibbles and help celebrate their 10 years of business on January Saturday 14th at the Salon in Competa just off Plaza Almijara. See advert opposite.

THE HASSEL FREE WAY TO GET A SPANISH MORTGAGE Axarquía Solicitors
A
nyone who is in the position of applying for a mortgage with a Spanish bank would have certain questions: i.e. How much can I borrow? How do I go about it? What do I need? This article will attempt to answer all of these questions so that anyone who is currently applying for a mortgage, or perhaps contemplating doing so, will know what is required. Firstly, the amount of money that you can ask for must be established. Generally this varies depending on whether we are talking about tax residents or non tax residents. As a general rule for those who are tax residents, the limit would be 80% of the purchase price or of the banks valuation of the property, (the lower of the two values is the one used for the calculations). On the other hand, for non-tax residents the maximum amount would be 65-70% of the lowest valuation. These figures can still vary depending on the circumstances of each individual and on the type of property being purchased
24 The Grapevine
which could possibly cause these percentages to increase considerably to reach even 95100% of the purchase value. Once we have established how much we can borrow, the next step is to contact the bank so that it can study the viability of the operation. Following we have included a list of the requirements and documentation necessary to apply for a mortgage from any of the banks operating in Spain. 1. If you are employed: Form P60 The last three pay slips The last statement of income (“Tax Return”) Letter of recommendation from employer Proof of any other income 2. If you are a self-employed: Last income tax (“Tax Return”) Last 3 pay slips Extract from the business accounts for the last 2 years Proof of any other income. Along with the above documentation, you should also include copies of any documentation relating to the
property that you wish to purchase such as: “Nota Simple” (from the local property Registry), IBI receipt (the rates receipt from the Town Hall), Property deed, private contract of sale, etc... Once the bank has analyzed all of the above documents provided by the applicant, it will give its verdict as to the feasibility, or otherwise, of the operation. In the event that the result is positive, the next step would be for the bank to arrange a valuation of the property in question. When the bank has the valuation it can then issue the final official mortgage offer called the “Oferta Vinculante”. This is a document supplied by the bank detailing the amount of the mortgage and it would include any conditions that have been negotiated beforehand. Finally, a mutually agreeable time and date would be arranged for all parties to meet at a Notary to sign the Deed of Sale between vendor and buyer, and at the same time to sign the Mortgage Deed with the bank. Hopefully this article is useful to those who are applying for a mortgage and to those that may have doubts as to the viability of getting a mortgage here in Spain. COMPETA HIKES AND THE AXARQUIA, ANDALUSIA Next Children's walk January 14th
F
rom the Himalayas, to the Blue Mountains, the Andes to the Drakensberg, The Rockies to the Golden Triangle, the natural, historical and unique wonder of these spectacular regions, albeit in a different context, is equalled here in Andalusia, and particularly in the Axarquia. David and I have trekked and hiked extensively across the world, and here, in the mountains surrounding the beautiful white washed village of Competa, we have found a walking and hiking paradise. The Axarquia offers 100's of kilometres of breathtaking and extensive multi level walking and hiking routes, criss crossed by Ibex, mountain goats, deer, wild boar and wild cat tracks, while many different species of Eagles, Falcons and Kestrels soar closely overhead.
Enhancing the marvellous spectacle of the Axarquia and its wildlife, is the obvious and delightful culture and history of rural Spain, beautifully maintained here in traditional working and farming practice, amongst white washed mountain villages dotted throughout the olive, almond and vine planted hilsides, steeped in the history of the Moors and Catholics battles to dominate this stunning area. And of course the Mediterranean, sub tropical temperate climate not only produces wonderful fruits such as mango, dates, kiwis and figs to pick as you walk, but also supports walking and hiking all year round. It is our mission to share and teach about the immense history, the wonderful landscape, flora, fauna and wildlife of this splendid region, so that it may be enjoyed, understood and preserved. Preservation of this region is
26 The Grapevine
most important to us and we have started a programme to provide education about the environment here, free to children and their families in Andalusia, so that we can not only promote the area, but ensure that the next generation grow up appreciating as much, its importance in this little corner of the world. Born and bred in Africa, David and I love the outdoors, and have a global perspective on everything we do. Competa Hikes, is not only our business, it is our passion. We truly want to bring the historical, cultural and natural value of this region to as many people as we can whilst maintaining responsible tourism, protecting the environment. And of course, naturally, we bring a little of our own African culture, as well as our experience from our global travels, to our walking lodge. This winter we have embarked on 2 key projects to enhance the

walker's experience of this wonderful area and our walking lodge. Firstly to build a luxury African Safari tent high into our grounds, with luxurious furnishings, colonial style, en suite slipper bath and ablution facilities, and an outdoor, but very private shower. We will be ready by the summer with this little piece of African paradise‌ secluded, wild, spectacular vistas, and very luxurious. Our second project is to open the Competa Walking Centre, a walking club, delicatessen, small cafe and walker's community area to promote and provide access to this splendid walking region. Our focus is not just our own business but to provide walkers from all over the world an exclusive guide to all that they can enjoy here in the Axarquia. From multi lingual seminars and education sessions, to guided walking, specialist accommodation across the region and other adventures.

We are providing specialist walking tours, right from our doorstep. Our walking lodge sleeps 20 people. We have superb, qualified walking guides, qualified in the British Mountaineering Association, that have also grown up in the region and provide specialist tours for bird watching, wild orchid viewing, medicinal herb tours and courses on how to grow your own medicinal herb garden in your kitchen!! They also provide Spanish mushroom tours, collecting and cooking, and many other unique tours of this nature. Finally our combination walking tour holidays aim to add culture and language to our guests achievements of their week here, adding Spanish Language classes, rural Spain cultural events and day trips to the walking itinerary. Our guests may like to choose a different course to combine with their walking tour, to get a taste of
something different that they have not done before. For example, walking and bonsai tree cutting, walking and yoga, walking and painting course, waking and Spanish wine course, to learn about the regions and taste the wine of course! They can also choose from walking and sculpting course, walking and Spanish cooking course, walking and meditation and walking and massage therapy. This is simply rural Spain at its absolute best. This is The Axarquia! This is our passion, this is our life, and we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do. and help keep other accountable and motivated. Enlist whatever help and resources you think you’ll need before you need them. Procrastination. Procrastination is one of the leading reasons that resolutions fail. Have you ever said that you’ll start a diet next week? Then next week comes and you don’t start the diet? There’s no time like the present to get started!
HOW TO STICK WITH YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Avoiding Failure
N
ow that we are officially into 2017, how are your New Year’s Resolutions going? Are you off to a strong start or have you given up already? Hopefully, you are committed to achieving your goals and are off to a running start. But, if you are like most people, your resolutions will soon be forgotten. There are many reasons that resolutions fail so quickly. The good news is that by becoming aware of the reasons they fail, you can change your actions and help achieve your goals. Let’s take a look at the most common sources of failure and how you can overcome each one. Too large of a goal. It’s great to shoot for the stars by setting a large goal. It is important that the large goal be broken down into smaller, more manageable and measurable goals. These goals should also be realistic. If your goal is to run a marathon this year, you should already have some running experience to build
30 The Grapevine
upon. If you don’t currently run, this goal is too large and not very realistic. To increase your current mileage, you would need a specific training program that gradually increases the distance and time you run each week. Without these smaller steps, you won’t be able to achieve the larger goal. No plan. Having a plan is critical to success but is one of the reasons that many people fail to achieve their goals. The first step is to write down your goal and define it carefully. Then, write down in detail how you will achieve it. Be very specific and include details such as how and when. This plan is your roadmap to success. The more specific and measurable the plan, the better. Having a written plan will keep you on track and moving forward. Lack of discipline/accountability. Many people lack the discipline and accountability to reach their goals on their own. This can be easily overcome by recruiting an accountability partner such as a friend or family member. Find someone that has a similar goal
Too many goals. Having too many goals can sabotage your success and become overwhelming. The best way to overcome having too many goals is to narrow down your list to one or two goals and focus on only a couple of things at a time. As soon as you achieve those goals, you can move down your list. As you set your goals for 2017, keep in mind some of the reasons that resolutions often fail and consider the potential roadblocks to achieving your goals. Facing these roadblocks up front will prepare you to overcome them. Log your progress along the way. This log can help you through tougher times along the way when you may feel like giving up. It is encouraging to see how far you have come already and motivate you to keep going. Even baby steps will get you a little bit closer to your goal. And last, but not least remain flexible and willing to adjust your plan if necessary. Sometimes you may need to take a detour along the way so it is very helpful to be flexible. Don’t get discouraged and let this throw you completely off course. Stay committed and keep going! April Mims

WRITING AXARQUIA Creative Writing Courses
I
t's late December and I am sitting at the bar at Casa Paco in Cómpeta, looking out at the rain-soaked paving of Plaza Almijara. A wet dog roams around the abandoned tables and chairs, an advert for disappointment. The cold wind sends a plastic bag break-dancing across the scene. The conditions are reminiscent of a holiday I once had in Abergavenny, until the waitress's warm greeting, in which I have graduated from chica to guapa, brings me back to all the ways in which Spain is very different to Wales. I am here to meet two new members of our community, Andrew and Fi, writers from London who are setting up creative writing classes here in the Axarquía. I've met their kind

before, I think to myself before they arrive. Writers from London – I'd better get some wine lined up. Meeting them for the first time they are all smiles, warm and approachable. 'Sorry about the weather,' I say, as if it's my responsibility to make the sun shine. 'It's wonderful,' says Fi. 'The campo is so lush and green. This is what I love about the Axarquía - it shatters any preconceptions about the Costa Del Sol. It's not all sunshine and Sangria.’ After they have ordered a Coke Lite and a Café con Leche Descafeinado, I launch into my first question. 'So, have you always been writers?' I ask. 'I've written for as long as I can remember, but not seriously'. 'Not seriously? What do you
mean by that Fi?’ 'I mean I've always written stories, poems and songs, and kept a journal of one sort or another, but it's only in the last few years that I realised I wanted to write full-time.' 'And what about you, Andrew? Have you always been a writer?' 'Yes, it just took me a few decades to realise.' 'How come?' 'Like Fi, I've always written in one form or another. It was just a guilty pleasure. A form of procrastination when I had other work to do.' 'So, what changed?' 'I don't really know. I had this scene in mind. The stuff of nightmares. HOT COLDS AND COLD COLDS Winter Health
W
inter is coming. So are colds and the flu. Here are some tips for preventing these viral illnesses. And for getting well fast if you do get sick.
Preventing colds and the flu can be summed up in three words: Wash your hands. The viruses that cause colds and the flu most readily enter our bodies by means of our hands. Wash your hands after shopping. Remind your children to wash their hands as soon as they come home from school. A little "hysterical hygiene" goes a long way to keeping colds at bay. Of course, there are herbs that can be used to help thwart colds and the flu. Yarrow is a clear favorite, especially as a tincture. Teachers, moms, and wise children find a dose of 5-25 drops of yarrow tincture in the morning in some liquid reduces the likelihood of getting sick by more than half. Astragalus is gaining fame for its ability to support strong immune system functioning. I throw a few
36 The Grapevine
tongue-depressor-like pieces in my soups, where they infuse their goodness without imparting much flavor. Powdered astragalus can be added to almost anything, from oatmeal to pancakes, soups to gravies. And there is always the tincture, which works well in doses of 1-3 dropperfuls a day. (If at all possible, use domestic astragalus, rather than that from China.) Eleuthero, which used to be called Siberian ginseng, is another immune system nourisher, used in the same ways as astragalus: cooked into food or taken as a tincture. And don't forget honey. A spoonful at the first sign of a sore throat or runny nose can kill the bacteria responsible and help you get better fast. (Note: Do not give honey to babies under 12 months old.) And if you do get sick, here's my favorite way to get well fast. Treat a cold cold with heat. Treat a hot cold with cold.
This may sound too easy, but it is actually one of the most effective ways I know of to minimize the severity and duration of a cold (or the flu). I first learned about cold colds and hot colds when I was studying Five Element Theory with a sweetheart who was attending acupuncture school. It is important to remember that "cold" and "hot" don't refer to temperature; they refer to what we might call metabolism. Thus, the person with a cold cold could very well have a raging fever and the person with a hot cold may have no fever at all. Similarly, hot foods and herbs are not necessarily cooked, and cold foods and herbs need not be refrigerated. So how can we tell the difference between a cold cold and a hot cold? And what are cold herbs and hot herbs, cold foods and hot foods? The person with a cold cold (or a cold flu) is pale. Their bodily fluids are copious and without color: The nose runs with clear
To advertise call 637 028 873
or white mucus; the bowels are loose and the feces are light in color; urination is profuse and colorless. The tongue may be coated with a white moss. If there is fever, it is accompanied by chills. The person with a cold cold seeks heat and hot foods. The person with a hot cold (or a hot flu) is ruddy; the face, or at least the cheeks, are very red. The eyes may feel dry and irritated. Their bodily fluids are scant and dark: nasal mucus is dry, yellowish, or "stopped up;" the bowels slow and feces are hard; urination is infrequent and highly colored. The tongue may be red or coated with a yellow moss. If there is a fever, it is "raging." The person with a hot cold seeks coolness and has little appetite. When you have a cold cold, indulge your desire for heating foods and herbs: Drink lots of hot spicy herbal teas with honey*, such as ginger tea, cinnamon tea, or any of the spicy "Yogi Tea" type blends. Nourish yourself with chicken soup, beef broth, miso soup. Enjoy baked
To advertise call 637 028 873
winter squash, baked potatoes, baked yams, baked garlic. Eat lots of olive oil, ghee, butter, olives, and avocados. Eat beans and eat the warming grains: kasha, rye, oats. Stay warm; take a hot bath or a hot shower and wrap up snugly before going to sleep. When you have a hot cold, indulge your desire for frozen fruit smoothies. Drink lemon and honey* water, iced nettle infusion, hibiscus and mint teas. Nourish yourself with seaweed salads, cucumber sandwiches, and fresh tomatoes with basil. Enjoy berries and melons, green salads, and roasted fowl. Eat the cooling grains: corn, millet, spelt. Eat a little something even if your appetite is small. Stay cool; take off your shoes and socks and put your bare feet on the ground. But keep covers handy when you go to sleep. You see, cold colds turn into hot colds and vice versa. They don't stay the same the whole time you are sick. So be prepared to pull the covers up to your chattering teeth and flowing nose
even if you went to bed stuffed up and sweltering. Or to throw off the pile of covers you clutched hours earlier. The real beauty of this idea of hot colds and cold colds is the premise that everything, even a cold, will change and so the cure comes not from knowing the right answer, but in following the flow of the sickness and offering appropriate treatments. I imagine a balance scale, swinging back and forth between hot and cold, with me gently damping the swings, making each one a little less severe, until single-pointed stillness - health - is regained. Whether dealing with a hot cold or a cold cold, you can eat as much of the neutral nourishing foods - rice, wheat, fish, honey*, and yogurt - as you wish. But, beware of taking vitamin C while harboring a cold or the flu; it is extremely cooling. . GADGETS TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2017 Weird, Wonderful and Wearable! WELT, THE WELLINTELLIGENT BELT Welt is the brand name given to this weird gadget. At first glance, it's nothing more than a stylish leather belt, but if you look a little deeper you'll notice that his buckle houses a microUSB port. Say hello to the new type of wearable: the intelligent belt. The Welt has five basic functions: Measuring waist size Counting steps Counting time spent sitting Report when we've been eating. Yes, that moment we slacken the belt. Holding trousers up Welt collects this data and makes it viewable in its companion app so you can take notice of your habits. In addition, the app provides a plan on how to keep in shape, as well as a series of exercises for you to try out This gadget isn't available just yet as the company is still seeking finance through its Kickstarter page. Shipments will begin from January 2017. It's a curious gadget that combines
40 The Grapevine
health and fashion and is further proof that wearable tech is becoming an everyday reality. PRINKER, THE TEMPORARY TATTOO PRINTER Prinker prints temporary tattoo designs that you can transfer from your Android phone to your skin. As a fan of tattoos, I fell in love with the product. The Prinker is very easy to use and within seconds you can download or create a drawing on your smartphone that sends the image to the mini printer. The device then applies the pattern to your skin as if by magic. The Prinker makes use of hypoallergenic paint and the tattoos last just a couple of days. I think this product could be great for events or a children's party, for example. Maybe face paint has had its day in the sun. The Prinker also isn't available yet but we'll let you know when we learn more. SGNL, LISTEN TO CALLS THROUGH YOUR FINGER SGNL is a bracelet that turns your hand into a phone. Really. It sounds like witchcraft, but it actually takes advantage of a
basic physics principle to transmit sound through a surface. This wristband works with any watch that's compatible with standard straps. On the bracelet is a protrusion which produces vibrations, like the diaphragm of a loudspeaker. But instead of transferring these through the air, instead sound travels through the bones of your hand. First, you need to connect your smartphone to the bracelet via Bluetooth and install the companion app, then make a call. After that, simply press a finger to your ear to hear the conversation. This increases privacy, as nobody can hear anything but you, and a microphone inside the wristband allows you to talk back like a normal telephone conversation. On the strap are five LEDs which display the current battery level and you can also assign frequently used numbers from the app, meaning you can make calls without removing your smartphone from your pocket.

KICKSTART YOUR METABOLISM Top Tips from Adam Irving, Health & Fitness Coaching
I
ts very common to feel like your metabolism isn’t working how you want it to work, it can become very frustrating when your body just won’t let go of that stubborn body fat, even though you’re making good dietary choices and exercising frequently? First of all lets look at chronic inflammation. When your metabolism gets stuck in reverse we can start by looking at what foods you are eating regularly. Food sensitivities can lead to insulin and leptin imbalances, this can seriously but a downer on your metabolism. If you have a food allergy or have a sensitivity to a certain food group, your body feels attacked and naturally goes on the defence. In addition to food allergies, inflammation can be caused by other factors, including poor sleep, environmental toxins and stress. Sometime over exercising can stall your metabolism by triggering inflammation through muscle, bone and joint stress. The foods most likely to be proinflammatory are junk foods and highly processed foods, grains, foods high in sugar. Many people have food sensitivities to what would normally be considered healthy, such as gluten, nuts, and dairy products. It’s important to not rule out the possibility that you may be having an unhealthy reaction to a healthy food. These food sensitivities can be very subtle, so they can sometimes be challenging to identify, requiring some trial and error. Next, I advise on increasing your protein intake, by doing this it increases your calorie burning ratio which increases fat utilisation. It also helps the body maintain muscle and triggers the brain to
46 The Grapevine
decrease hunger levels Protein in general has a tendency to ignite your metabolic engine due to its thermogenic effects, this means it makes your body produce more heat and in turn, burn more calories. Humans seem to lose muscle mass as they age, however the leaner you are, the more effective your metabolism will be, regardless of your age. There is only about a two-hour window after exercise for optimal muscle repair and growth, and supplying your muscles with the right food at this time is essential. Next up, Intermittent fastingRecent studies show that intermittent fasting can provide the same health benefits as constant calorie restriction, which may be helpful for those who cannot successfully reduce their everyday calorie intake. Intermittent fasting has been shown to increase fat loss and improve metabolic diseases. Besides turning your body into an efficient fat burner, intermittent fasting can boost your human growth hormone production by as much as 1,200 percent for women and 2,000 percent for men. I am personally a huge fan of intermittent fasting so I will revisit this subject at a later date in more depth. Strength exercises drive the core of fat loss, this type of exercising is a combination of body weight, resistance and weight training. Strength training has many factors including boosting your metabolism, increasing your brain power and is also an excellent way to reduce aches and pains, while at the same time preventing osteoporosis and age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia). If you’re not engaging in strength training, chances are you’ll become increasingly less functional with
age. If you would like any advice and guidance on where to start with this then please don’t hesitate to ask me. Coffee and Green Tea with Caffeine If you’re a coffee lover, I have good news! When consumed correctly, high-quality organic coffee can be used as a health & fitness enhancing tool (as long as you aren’t pregnant in which case it’s best to avoid it altogether). When consumed before exercise, caffeine has been shown to exert the following positive effects: Improved energy and endurance Increased blood circulation Reduced pain Better muscle recovery Improved fat burning Also, when consumed after exercise, the caffeine from coffee inhibits the mechanism that increases protein synthesis in your muscle tissue. Your muscle repair in the recovery period after exercising, so on that note if your main goal is to maximise fat burning, having a coffee after exercise could be the best thing you could ever do as it will help keep you in fat burning mode longer. Green Tea is arguably one of the healthiest drinks you can consume, it benefits both your brain and your heart. The positive effects of green tea are due to its rich source of antioxidants. They are my top tips on how to kickstart your metabolism, I incorporate all of the above into my own life and also encourage the above with my clients. Next month I’ll be talking about fat loss during and after the menopause cycle. Adam Irving, Health & Fitness Coaching. See advert opposite

“Hace un mes empecé el entrenamiento con Adam me lo recomendó una amiga. Al principio no sabía si esto iba a funcionar ya que nunca había tenido un entrenador personal ni tampoco sabía como iba hacer. El primer día empezamos pues con mis medidas mi peso y cual serían mis objetivos y con el entrenamiento. Poco a poco hemos ido avanzando con los ejercicios dándole mayor intensidad. THINKING OF SELLING? NOW IS THE TIME TO MARKET YOUR PROPERTY! By Sunset Properties Spain
C
Here are some tips:
hristmas has been and gone and the New Year is here! As the cold wet winter months drag by in much of northern Europe potential buyers will soon start to focus their attention on their dream of buying a property in the fabulous climate on offer here in Spain.
Make your house less personal to you Too many family photos and personal items mean clients can't imagine it as theirs.
Spring is traditionally the time of year when people often decide to commence their search for a new home in the sun. If you're thinking of selling your property in the future, why not put it on the market now so that it's already being advertised and promoted as Spring approaches?
Touch up the paintwork – inside and outside Brighten up your house so it's fresh and clean and ready for immediate use.
Even in the months of January, February and March we can expect days of beautiful weather and photographs of your property will look great against a backdrop of blue sky and sunshine so why not contact us today and we'll arrange to visit your property on a sunny day! The presentation of your property is really important as first impressions are crucial.
62 The Grapevine
Remove clutter from every room Less clutter makes the house look more open and spacious.
Stage your property outside as well as inside The outside is just as important, if not more important, than the inside! Odour control – smoking and pets Consider smoking outside and try and mask the smell of your pets. Pet control Make sure your dogs are not in the house during viewings. At Sunset Properties Spain we can offer you maximum publicity for your property by using all of the following marketing methods:
At Sunset Properties Spain www.sunsetproperties-spain.com

UNSPOILT ANDALUSIA By Toni Waterman
A
s an agent with clients from across Europe purchasing village and country properties in Andalusia, the Brexit saga has been one of considerable concern for our business. The big question on everyone's minds was, will the British continue to buy in Spain? First reactions after the June referendum, we experienced a definite reduction in enquiries, down from around 10 a day to maybe 1 or 2, or even none, from British clients, almost overnight. It put us to wondering whether to drop the British target market advertising completely and increase the targeting of Dutch, Belgian and Scandinavian buyers. The Dutch and Belgians in particular are 'out in force', cleverly foreseeing the huge reduction in

European demand for Muslim countries as their next holiday destinations and heading for good old safe, cheap, easy-to-get-to Spain. They are buying properties to rent, to milk the Spanish tourist market to its full. The British, on the whole, are more dreamy, with a camera in our hands, rather than a calculator. But after a long, quiet few months of contemplation, and much effort on my part to set up new advertising accounts with Dutch and Belgian property portals, something amazing has happened… the Brits are back in with a vengeance! Enquiries are pouring in and enthusiasm is high. Whilst taking recent clients around a wonderful old cortijo, oozing character and rustic charm, I asked my British clients, as they drank in
all those beams and ancient, uneven floors, what made them still think of Spain, with all the uncertainties that Britain-out-ofEurope might hold for them. “We need to get away from a country we are rapidly feeling out of place in” was their immediate reply. And this is happening time and time again. We still have uncertainties ahead, the most obvious being the exchange rate, and whether our health will be covered post-Brexit in Spain. But the British love affair with Spain, I predict, will continue, because love is unconditional, illogical, and wonderful. Just the other day I helped new British clients, who have just made a permanent move to Alcaucin, fill in their private health care forms – and it is not that expensive, perfectly acceptable to most. And the exchange rate? We just have to get used to working with a low rate, and the market, we hope, will adjust accordingly.

Resolution 1: Most importantly, if you're not a gardener, become one. According to research, just 2.5 hours a week of moderate intensity exercise – such as gardening – can reduce the risk of high blood pressure, obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, osteosporosis etc. etc. It wards off depression because it's difficult not to enjoy life when surrounded by flowers and wildlife. Gardens increase your joy of living and the value of your property. If you haven´t got a garden, start with pots on windowsills, balconies or roof terraces.
Resolution 3: Linked to the above, try a compost heap or worm bin to improve the texture of your soil and make your plants strong and healthy. Chemical fertilisers force your plants to grow faster than Mother Nature ever intended; they become pumped with steroids, addicted and dependant and, in their grossly over-lush state far more attractive to pests and diseases. Instead feed naturally; composted leaves are easy and if you really haven´t time you can buy sacks of organic worm castings which only need to be applied twice a year. It will make your plants and garden naturally resistant and strong.
Resolution 2: Get your plants off drugs, get greener – lessen the use of harmful products. It's easy to eliminate the use of chemical fertilisers and insecticides for
Resolution 4: Some chickens? Come and see ours, they are such characters, give us free eggs and free manure. If you can freerange them, they'll also eat lots of

unfriendly bugs, beetles and grubs. Or give some help to the bees, they need us as much as we need them. At the very least encourage good bugs – they will help you in the battle against the bad bugs! Plant daisy-like flowers and composites such as yarrow, dill and verbena – ladybirds, lacewings and hoverflies love them. The larvae of these eat huge amounts of aphids and other pests. Encourage chamaeleons, lizards, geckos, hedgehogs, frogs and toads – they are all our friends. Resolution 5: Reduce or get rid of your lawn. It guzzles water and your time. Lawnmowers are high pollutants and in your quest for a green sward you probably use inordinate amounts of high nitrogen fertilisers which pollute our waterways. Resolution 6: If you've never grown any, plant some herbs. Most are ridiculously easy, very productive, smell good to us but bad to mosquitos. Adding them to our meals for flavour, reduces our craving for salt. Perennial ones such as rosemary, oregano, sage,

chives, lemon grass; and annuals such as coriander and basil. Resolution 7: Water correctly. Daily sprinkles is not the way. Roots rise to the surface and burn in the hot sun. With deep watering, once or twice a week at the most, roots go down, anchor the plant better and find many minerals that are not available in the top few centimetres. In winter, if you really need to irrigate, do it in the morning so that your plants do not sit damp and cold all night. In summer reverse it, watering late evening so that the plants can absorb the precious water before the sun burns it off. Always let plants dry out between waterings. Too much water rots the roots. Resolution 8: Related to the above, check irrigation systems regularly to make sure you don´t have any expensive leakages. Catch and store all the rainwater you can. Resolution 9: Use mulch around your plants. 10cm of shredded leaves, compost or bark chippings help retain moisture around the roots and cut down weed-growth.

Resolution 10: Plant at least one tree this year – we so need them and many of us have plenty of land. And try something new in your garden. Here in Spain the choice is constantly widening. Go to your local garden centre (like ours!) and ask for advice – we are always happy to tell you the truth. Remember that experimentation is all part of the fun of gardening. Resolution 11: Show a child the wonders of plant life – and death! Did your parents/grandparents do it for you? And has the wonder of it all ever left you? Treasure the memory and pass it on. Resolution 12: Spend more time in the garden but less time gardening! That may seem like odd advice from me but you need to fall in love with your garden and if that means relaxing in it, socialising, or just finding a quiet corner then do it. Nature is beautiful, capture its spirit and enjoy its solace. Smell the flowers and enjoy! Have a wonderfully contented and productive New Year.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM CAS As the Costa Animal Society (CAS) begins 2017 and its 31st year as a registered charity, we cannot express enough gratitude towards our volunteers and supporters throughout the year. From the people who give their time in the CAS shop and at various markets to those who provide donations and financial support, we could not carry on the work we do without your assistance. Last year local business such as Dentadanes, Stephen's Restaurant and Bar 19 were financial sponsors through regular donations and creative ways of raising funds such as the Bar 19 five litre Jameson's raffle, with the proceeds given to CAS. CAS, and the stray and abandoned animals helped by its volunteers, look forward to your continued support this year. New CAS Shop is open! Automatic cash machines are new this season. There are 11 new cash machines where you can buy ski passes for one to seven days without having to go to the ticket office. These include half-day passes, nighttime passes and pedestrian tickets. You can also pick up passes which have been purchased by travel agencies, using the reference number, and people who hold the Sierra Nevada Club card can also recharge their cards using the same system. Although this season there is a great deal of focus on the world championships, the calendar and timetable for the trials have been scheduled to try to disrupt the commercial skiing areas as little as possible.

It is a common phenomenon with drinkers. The body responds negatively to ingestion of high amounts of alcohol or other similar intoxicating drugs. The phenomenon of hangover takes place in the morning following the night of heavy alcohol consumption. However for some it may continue for several days from the last date of alcohol consumption. The degree of hangover is determined by factors like age, diet before alcohol consumption, physical condition and mental state. There is no rigid parameter to determine exactly how many drinks would cause hangover, for it varies from person to person. Only 20-25% people are able to resist the effects of hangover.
