Easter is on its way and with plenty going on in the area it's a great time to enjoy some holiday. There is an Artwalk, Easter Egg Hunt and plenty of places to choose from for a traditional Easter Sunday Roast. In the months to follow we are Scruffs Dog Show, see page 18 and the Walk for Life, see page 44. Back to this month and we have our “Property Feature” and we have combined it with “Property Management” as the summer season is now fast approaching. So, if you have already bought a property and need someone to manage it while you are away or have rentals, there are some great businesses to choose from in this month's magazine. If you haven't bought a property in the area yet, now seems a good time. The press is certainly more positive about Spain and signs of recovery are definitely appearing. My advice would be to buy now before the prices start to rise again! Finally, at last month's resident's day in Competa, The Grapevine Magazine was given an award by the Town Hall in recognition of promoting the local area and providing information to the local residents for over 10 years (see page 21.) It was great to receive this award and hope to be providing the same service for many years to come. ne of Spain's top dolphin trainers has been found dead after a video of him allegedly abusing dolphins at Mallorca's Marineland centre was posted online. According to his employers at Marineland, José Luis Barbero was the “victim of a ferocious campaign against his honour” on social networks which went as far as to include death threats. These “orchestrated attacks” did not give Barbero “the chance to prove his innocence”, the centre said. Mr Barbero went missing last Tuesday and was found at the weekend inside his car at Palma airport. Investigators said they had found no sign of violence and are waiting for an autopsy to be completed. Mr Barbero, 59, had been offered a senior post in the United States at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.

panish businessman David Marjaliza was one of 51 people, including six mayors from the Madrid region, who were arrested last October suspected of forming a political corruption ring in which €250 million was handed out in fraudulent contracts. But despite the evidence of bid-rigging for public contracts and phony invoices handed over to local councils for non-existent work, Marjaliza claims some of his money was acquired in a legal, albeit extremely fortunate manner. According to a report drawn up for anti-corruption prosecutors by Spain’s tax agency, the 46-yearold Madrid businessman won the lottery eight times in a 16-month period, triggering suspicions of a money-laundering ruse. Between December 2012 and

PURSUING HAPPINESS Keys to great Health.
T
he keys to great health are eating whole fresh ripe raw local plants, exercising daily, and taking time to be still or to meditate every day. Yet unequivocally the healthiest thing we all can do is to indulge in feeling happy as much and as often as we can. At first thought this may seem excessively self centred, should anyone be happy most of the time? Well yes, seeing someone, anyone, distressed, upset, in tears is not pleasant, we want to help, we would like to change things to see them smile, to hear them laugh. Those who have raised children will recall the immense capacity a child has for enjoyment and laughter and how their delight infected all around them with the same joy.
Indeed infection is truly the nature of happiness, giving a smile to someone costs us nothing and yet is so often a glorious gift to the recipient who will invariably return the smile and encourage them to pass that warm endorphin rush to the next person they see. Smiling and laughing, even when forced, cause remarkable changes in our chemistry; muscles relax, breathing, heart rate and blood pressure improve and when this occurs we are into better health!. The brain does not differentiate between the real or the imaginary so it is important to consider false, fake, phoney happiness as being valid and useful, our imagination can turn an amusing incident into a tragic situation or make a rather bad experience become a light hearted moment and the brain will accept this. It would therefore make good sense to practice
An argument with a colleague, a bicker with a neighbour, a tiff with a sibling, in the scheme of things are all so irrelevant and can always be resolved with a kindly word, a friendly smile or a generous apology as we often will be able to laugh off such incidents at a later date, thus we might as well make the moment of letting the sour feeling go sooner rather than later. A death in the family is dreadful and we need to grieve but at some point we will recall how funny kind creative or clever our loved was and how they enriched our lives and our heart and mind will find happiness with the privilege of having known them and of enjoying the time we had with them. Furthermore we know the departed would hate to think we were sad. Feeling miserable or grumpy and being sad helps no-one not even ourselves, it causes our health to suffer. Making ourselves smile and feeling happy benefits many.. a win win situation all round. Jane Gudge

ittle Daisy, at just a few months old, was found abandoned in Archez.
A Spanish woman, Jesúsa, had rescued her and had been looking after her in the hope that she'd eventually be able to find someone to adopt her. Jesúsa came into our charity shop to ask if we could help. Thankfully we didn't have to look too far for Daisy's new owner, as Liz, one of our own shop volunteers, fell in love with Daisy and decided to offer her a wonderful new home. Here they are pictured together in the shop, just before Liz scooped her up and took her home to a future life where we know she'll be completely loved and totally spoilt. What a happy ending for little Daisy! But now we're looking for a home for Emi, who was found in
Sayalonga. Emi was born last August and is now just over 6 months old. She's going to be quite a big dog, already weighing in at 20 kilos, and she'd make a lovely pet. She is vaccinated and chipped and Action for Animals have already covered the cost of neutering. Can you offer Emi a loving home? Our next quiz will be on April 10th at Restaurant La Vendimía in Cómpeta. It promises to be a fun evening with prizes for the winners of each round and a raffle too. During this time I have lived full time in the village of Sedella and was responsible for public works and maintenence of infastructure. In recent months we have made new improvements such as a new gym, work on the cemetary, a gallery, improvements to the fountain, new village lighting, new TV antenna, a park and also a new water deposit to alleviate the water problems. COOL THINGS THE CRISIS DID FOR SPAIN The economic crisis has given Spain its fair share of silver linings.
T
he economic crisis has brought difficult times for many Spaniards but now the latest figures show that Spain is on the road to recovery and set for a brighter future. Here some of the coolest things that were created out of the crisis MICROTEATRO: Austerity caused arts funding to be drastically cut across Spain but it spawned the microtheatre scene. At tiny venues across cities, audiences squeeze in to see actors perform in shows that often cost less than five euros. It´s cheap, creative, cultural fun for the smallest of budgets. GUERILLA PUBLISHING: Small independent publishers are flourishing in Spain while the big houses are forced to merge to survive. It means forgotten gems
and little-known writers are making more of an appearance on the shelves. A positive for anyone who loves roaming through book filled shelves. LEARNING ENGLISH: With youth unemployment reaching a peak of 55 percent the thirst for acquiring another language has never been stronger. While bilingual learning in public schools as gone from strength to strength in Madrid, private academies are reporting more business than ever as the young seek to improve their chances at finding work both home and abroad. PODEMOS: Without the crisis, Spain would never have had the indignados, a movement which gave birth to Spain´s newest and fastest growing political party Podemos. In only a year since it
was founded the party of political science lecturer Pablo Iglesias has broken Spain´s traditional two-party system. REBAJAS: The time in between sales has got shorter and the bargains better meaning that if you do have money to spare, you can buy more with it. CAR SHARING: Automobile sales are down and people are driving less which means the roads are emptier and the air cleaner. For those wanting to get from A to B without their own wheels a number of car sharing services have grown out of the crisis, which can only be good news for the environment.
URBAN ALLOTMENTS: Rows of neatly cultivated greens can now be found on what was once derelict scrubland in abandoned corners of Spanish towns.

increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.
Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. To celebrate our 5th annual “Day for Life” there are two new exciting challenges, the first, a Zumba Marathon, takes place on Saturday, 11th April in Competa Sports Hall with Nicola McEvoy who promises you two hours of fun Zumba from 11am – 1pm. The entry charge of only 5 euros per adult and 3 euros per child is all donated to Cudeca. The second new challenge is to see who can hold the body plank for the longest amount of time whilst gaining sponsorship for every ten seconds. You can obtain a sponsor form; see details at the end of article. This will take place on Day for Life at The Alberdini at 12.30 and there will be a prize for the winner, sponsored by Inez from The Alberdini. The third challenge is our Walk for Life, a 5km sponsored walk around the village of Competa, now in its 10th annual year. To celebrate a decade of Walk for Life, we'd like the children (and anyone else who wants too!) to dress up as Sunflowers and adults to walk in the colours of Cudeca, green and/or yellow. There will be three separate prizes for the best dressed female, male and youngster.

t's great to entertain over here but it can be quite stressful. This recipe is really popular with everyone, impressive and a bit different. The best thing about it is that it's really easy to make and it can be prepared in advance.

Marinade 4 salmon filets 2tbsp Light Soy Sauce 1tbsp Honey 1-2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp of lime juice, mirin or rice wine. Make sure the salmon has had all the scales removed, wash it

The 2015 Propert y Feature Citing improved expectations for economic growth, and improving financing conditions, BBVA forecast that 2015 will deliver more home sales “accompanied by a moderate growth in prices, and another rise in development activit y”. The end of Spain’s long recession, a return to job creation, and increasing mortgage credit, have all boosted consumer confidence, which will fuel more propert y sales. Recent data suggests Spanish house prices have finally clawed back to stabilit y after seven years of crisis, with official data showing that prices rose for the first time since 2008, on a quarterly basis at least. T
he citrus world is vast but, sadly, we don't get offered many unusual ones here. It's wonderful to have fresh oranges and lemons from trees in our gardens but it would also be delightful to have the opportunity to grow something a bit different. Do you fancy finger limes, kaffir limes and Meyer lemons? Don't know what they are? Well, read on! Australian Finger Limes, microcitrus australasica. These are the caviar of the citrus world and I'm not exaggerating as they are also commonly called lime caviar. The fruits are elongated and bumpy, up to about 8 cm long – in fact they look rather like a gherkin. But cut them open and they are filled with tiny tangy jewels that seem to explode in the mouth. Both the peel and the pulp come in a myriad of colours and, whilst in most citrus the pulp or juice vesicles are shaped rather like a teardrop, in finger limes they are like tiny balls – a fruity caviar that bursts in your mouth.

Cut the tip off the finger lime and squeeze it from the bottom to release the pulp. It's a great substitute for a squeeze of lime juice and looks amazing in cocktails, sorbets and fruit salads. Or a wonderful topping to mussels or oysters. Believed to be up to 18 million years old, finger limes are endemic to the rainforests of Queensland and New South Wales area of Australia and have always been great bush tucker, Nowadays, they fetch fancy money – if you can get hold of them. The thorny and hardy plants are slow-growing and will form small trees ultimately to about 5m high and were once a common underplanting of the vast swathes of semi-tropical rainforest that was, sadly, largely devastated by settlers. However, this particular bush food survived and is seeing a resurgence now. Kaffir Lime/Makrut Lime, citrus hystrix. The kaffir lime is used
predominantly for its pungent leaves - to identify a kaffir lime, look at the leaves. they are guitar shaped. The fruits are small and bumpy with very little pith and are highly acidic but the rind is also very aromatic. Both the exceptionally fragrant fruits and leaves play an essential role in Thai cooking imparting unique flavours that cannot be emulated using other citrus. Use the more mature dark green leaves in your cooking, but in moderation at first until you become addicted to that luscious flavour! The kaffir lime tree is mildly frost hardy although its native habitat is hot and humid with monsoon rains for half of the year. We cannot duplicate those conditions here but the kaffir lime tree has shown itself to be remarkably adaptable. Additionally, the kaffir lime trees that we buy have been grafted onto a tough rootstock which means the entire tree will adapt to our temperate climate and cooler, dryer conditions. Help it along by giving it maximum sunlight and as much protection

from the wind as you can. In Thailand nearly every home has its kaffir lime tree in the yard. Apart from their amazing flavour in cooking, the fruits and leaves are used as household cleaners and insecticides. Shampoo made from Kaffir lime leaves the hair squeaky clean and the invigorating scent is said to ward off evil spirits whilst uplifting the soul! In traditional folk medicine it is said to promote gum health and is beneficial to the digestive system. A little tree that packs a powerful punch! Improved Meyer Lemon, citrus x Meyeri. The Meyer lemon, or gourmet lemon, has long been unavailable in Spain but we have – at last – managed to source some. Born of a love affair between a lemon tree and an orange tree, the fruits are sweeter and slightly rounder than conventional lemons with a thin skin and have deeper egg-yolk colouration. Its exact history and
parentage is unknown. The trees are small, to around 4m in height, but extremely prolific fruiters and their compact size means they are ideal for pot growth too. They look lovely, for instance, in traditional orangerie planters, barrels or pots around 50cm across. They grow well in traditional citrus growing areas and will tolerate brief freezes and even a little shade. The tree was originally found growing in a Beijing backyard by US plant explorer, Frank Meyer, and he introduced it into the U.S. in the early 1900's. During the 1950's and 1960's almost all the trees died from citrus tristeza virus. Luckily a few were immune and were grafted onto virus-free rootstocks. It was renamed Improved Meyer Lemon and thus we know them today. All of these rare citrus varieties are really hard to find in Spain but we're delighted to tell you that we
