Editors Note... Last month we focused on Christmas to start you thinking and preparing for the big day, hopefully it helped get you organised early. If not don’t worry there is still time to book your Christmas Lunch or New Years Eve celebration. Shops are stacked with loads of Christmas ideas and presents, just take a look inside this months magazine for where to go. Also, in December there are two new Christmas markets advertised, one in Canillas de Albaida on Saturday 14th December and another in Competa on the 7th December. Along with these Christmas markets there will also be carol singing by local choirs to look forward to, again more details can be found in the magazine. Front Cover: Happy Christmas from The Grapevine Magazine

On a totally different note four local business owners in Competa (Grapevine Magazine, Sugar & Spice, Todo Papel & Misterweb) got together to grow moustaches as part of the Movember campain to raise vital funds and awareness for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues. There is still time to sponsor them just log onto http://uk.movember.com/team/1249553 and press donate and of course there are some photos there as well to laugh at! Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy and of course prosperous New Year.

NEWS IN SPAIN News from around the Country

B

ritain has challenged an EU investigation that cleared Spain of violating European rules by imposing lengthy checks at Gibraltar’s border following the latest dispute over the territory. The European Commission said that it had “not found evidence” that Spain had infringed rules on border controls after it sent observers to investigate lengthy queues on the request of Prime Minister David Cameron this summer.

A

British holidaymaker died after apparently suffering a heart attack while paragliding on the Spanish island of Tenerife. Carolyn Dewdney, 53, an experienced hang glider from Cheltenham, Glos, plummeted to the ground, crash landing in a mountainous area in the south of the Canary Island. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Mrs Dewdney was on a week-long paragliding holiday with her husband Nigel, 47, who participated in the 2010 Paragliding World Cup and is the chairman of Malvern Hang Gliding Club, based in Malvern, Worcestershire. Mr Dewdney told the Telegaph he was "absolutely

6 The Grapevine

devastated" by what has happened. The couple, who married in 2003, were on their first visit to Tenerife on a trip organised by Para 42, a specialist company run by British expat, Henry Willder.

T

o most people, noise pollution is a jet engine roaring over their head. For one Spanish woman, it was a neighbour playing the piano more softly than a spoken conversation. The woman has taken her neighbours in the apartment below - a 27-year-old pianist and her parents - to court. Now prosecutors want to send all three to jail for over seven years on charges of psychological damage and noise pollution. In a country known for its exuberant noisiness, the case has raised eyebrows. Neighbours often complain about street and bar noise in Spain, but prosecutors seeking jail time for someone practicing the piano is unheard of - especially since that musician is now a professional concert pianist.

S

panish Towns that have become infamous because of crimes committed there

have demanded search engines change their settings so that positive publicity appears above that of negative press. The towns claim that potential visitors using the internet to research possible destinations are being informed of the negative associations rather than their assets. Among those to press their case is Alcasser, a small town near Valencia where three teenage girls were kidnapped, raped and murdered in 1992. Council authorities complain that typing the town's name into a search engine such as Google produces dozens of entries about the triple murders overshadowing links to websites that promote more positive aspects of the town, such as the Visigoth necropolis and 15th century castle.Another is Puerto Hurraco, a small village in the Extramadura region of Spain where two brothers went on a killing spree in 1990 murdering nine people. There, council authorities would rather promote the surrounding countryside as a haven for ramblers. The search engines, however, insist that they cannot be held responsible for negative publicity.

T

he disgraced son-in-law of King Juan Carlos of Spain has brought further embarrassment to the Spanish Royal Family with the publication of a series of crude and sexist private emails in which he ridicules his in-laws. Iñaki Urdangarin, who was given the title of Duke of Palma when he married the King's youngest daughter Princess Cristina in 1997, is currently being investigated for using his royal connections to embezzle public funds, a scandal that has damaged the reputation of the Spanish monarchy.Emails from his computers seized as part of the ongoing investigation were leaked to Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo. While they may show he has a sense of humour, it will do nothing to heal the rift between him and the other Royals.

P

ro Nuematicos in Velez Malaga is moving to bigger premises. It’s not going far just to the Poligono Industrial estate 5 mins from Eroski. The move will take place over the long weekend of 6th, 7th and 8th of December and the other premises will close. The new garage is a lot larger with more car ramps and extra staff. Business has continued to be successful and expansion has really been due to demand. John owner of ProNeumaticos understands how important customer retention is so doesn’t want them to wait any more than they have to. Another 3 ramps and staff will allow the turnaround of cars to be quicker. Alongside this, the new premises have a waiting room where there will be a TV, tea and coffee facilities and free wifi. This of course provides a

So he will be naming his new premises Euro Autocentre although he will be running both names together for a while.

Euro AutoCentre supply and fit all leading brands of tyres including Michelin, Pirelli, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop, Firestone, Plus many more. They also stock quality guaranteed budget tyres. All their tyres come with the manufactures lifetime guarantee.

John has been in Spain for 13 years now and is fluent in Spanish. He employees both Spanish and English staff and his customers are all nationalities.

In addition to tyres all other garage services are available for example Brakes, Exhaust, Clutches, Servicing, AirConditioning, Batteries, Pre-ITV, Timing Belts, Diagnostics and Electrics. Euro AutoCentre the one stop garage for car repair.

MORE THAN JUST A NEWSAGENTS An interview with Todo Papel

L

ast year the Post Office in Competa introduced changes to its charges for a post box. This meant households had to pay per person for receiving post to the same box. The reality meant that many people with homes in the campo could no longer afford a post box. There were complaints about these charges but the reality remained.. Instead of complaining any more a few customers suggested to Todo Papel in Competa that they provide the service as well, and then people could have a choice. Alick and Debbie from Todo Papel had already diversified their business in many ways over the last couple of years in order to be successful within a country in recession. The post box idea also seemed a natural move for them as they already offered other types of postal services. So, after a conversation with the Mayor and research into postal law it seemed that everybody is entitled to receive mail to the address on the envelope. Initially, they bought 20 boxes to see how it went. They advised their customers of their new PO Box service, Todo Buzones, which at €45 per year per household made it far more economical compared to the post office. They also added their own personal touch by offering a service where

26 The Grapevine

you could pay an additional €5 euro annually in order to receive notification of post or parcels by email when they arrived. It wasn't surprising that immediately the 20 boxes were sold and another 100 were purchased to accommodate demand. In fact they will keep buying boxes on demand so don't worry if you can't see a spare one in the shop. Debbie and Alick explained there is still plenty of space and with a bit of change around there is virtually no limit to the amount of boxes they have. They are available to anyone, you don't have to live in Competa and businesses can use the boxes as a convenient postal address. Todo Papel has also managed to maintain a good relationship with the post office and Eva the post girl. All post through the Spanish post office system can be delivered to Todo Papel including signed for items. For large and heavy items the post office will issue an 'Aviso' and Alick or Debbie will collect from the post office and bring the item back to Todo Papel. To take advantage of the post box service, all you need to do is change your address to the shop address, which Alick & Debbie will advise you of. By way of an example, the Town Hall have cooperated with Todo Papel and

December is a good time to make the change as you can notify friends and family inside their Christmas card of your new postal address. Incidentally you can buy the Christmas cards at Todo Papel too. So it is truly a 1 stop shop for all your postal needs! The new postal box service complements the existing Todo Papel services. They have worked with Offex for the last 6 years so they can send post outside of Spain worldwide. They can also arrange courier services worldwide, including Spain. This service has been used, for example, to save on hold baggage. They have been receiving courier items for many years now which is particularly useful at Christmas time where Todo Papel is the main drop off for Amazon parcels! All courier items received are included with the post box service. However, they will still receive items from a courier if you don't have a box with them although this service will be subject to the following charges, up to 1kg €1, up to 2 kg €2, up to 9kg €3 and 10 kg or more €5. They also ask you to notify them if you are expecting them to receive a package. Todo Papel also have a good second hand book exchange as well as DVD rental not to mention all the Christmas essentials; cards, wrapping and parcel paper, gift tags, sweets and chocolates along with your favourite magazines and newspapers. Over the last 8 years Todo Papel has definitely become more than just your local newsagent!

Ruby before treatment

Ruby after treatment

ACTION FOR ANIMALS Megan and Pete Furness share their story

T

his month Megan and Pete Furness would like to share their story of Ruby, a dog they recently adopted that had been diagnosed with Leishmaniasis. Three months ago, Nina from Action for Animals phoned to ask if we would consider fostering a dog that had just been rescued by an English couple, which Gunila and Lisa at Naturvets were trying to rehome. The dog had been diagnosed with Leishmaniasis, a disease transmitted by the bite of an infected sandfly. When Pete and I went to see Ruby she was in a poor state, very underweight, scabby, with bald patches, and scaly skin. I was scared to stroke her in case I hurt her but she had such sad eyes in a sweet, little face that we immediately agreed to foster her. Within twenty minutes we knew we would be keeping her forever and the task of nursing her back to health began. Ruby was started on her course of treatment, a cocktail of tablets, liquid medication, regular baths with specialised shampoo, and put on a high-calorie, protein-rich natural diet, which delighted our other two dogs as they also had a little of everything. Just like children, dogs get jealous!

32 The Grapevine

Several weeks later Ruby was up to a normal weight and some of the scaly skin was softer and growing new hair. But as fast as her skin healed she scratched and bit it red raw. She was put back on antibiotics and given a new shampoo, which reduced her itching and improved her skin. Bathtimes were, to say the least, entertaining. Usually Pete would hold Ruby while I got in the shower with her and did the actual bathing. However, in late September, Pete was away for two weeks. By now Ruby recognized the signs of an impending bath and would scuttle off to the furthest, most awkward corner of the house. Having tracked her down I carried her to the bathroom and set her down in the shower tray. As soon as I turned to slide the door shut Ruby was off like a greyhound from the starting stalls and managed to scrunch herself behind the toilet in a very narrow space. Eventually, with my head on the toilet and an arm each side of it (think back to your teenage years), I managed to prise her out and carry her back to the shower. With one wet and soapy Ruby – we were going okay now – I let down my guard. Bad idea. She managed to get her nose in the tiny gap between door and frame to slide it open and scarper into my bedroom. Ever tried catching a greased jelly? It

eventually took me forty minutes to carry out what was normally a ten minute bath. Today, although Ruby still has a way to go, we’re hopefully on the downhill slope now. Juan at Naturvets prescribed a stronger, specialised lotion, which has made a big difference. She no longer smells as bad as she did and her skin is so much better, with new hair growing all the time. She scratches much less often, asks for cuddles and dashes up the steep Barranco (unlike me) on her walks. As for those pesky cats – look out – Ruby has her mojo back! Massive thanks to all at Naturvets for their brilliant care of Ruby and to Action for Animals for covering the ongoing costs of her treatment. If you would like to foster an animal or support the work of Action for Animals please visit our charity shop and come and see us (and Santa) at the Christmas Fair on 7th of December at the Paseo de Tradiciones in Cómpeta! TIS THE SEASON TO BE BERRY! Campo cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh

W

e usually think of splashes of bright red berries burning through a frosty wintry scene but, although – thankfully – we don't get much hoar frost here, the glow of berries still looks great in a winter garden either brightening up rain-lashed days or sparkling in winter sunshine. Many of these berried delights need more chilling or wetter conditions than we get, but some will give us that essential winter look. Pyracantha or firethorn. A winter seducer with its branches laden with opulent berries in shades or yellow, orange or red. It's a tough and easy grower and can make great 'keep out' evergreen hedging with its long needle-like thorns. Equally good in springtime when its branches are thickly festooned with white flowers. Rosa rugosa or Japanese rose. Another very prickly customer, tough, drought, wind and disease resistant, it is also very beautiful. The crinkled green leaves can be

40 The Grapevine

semi-evergreen and the flowers, in white or magenta pink, are tissuepaper fine but it's the hips – fatly rounded - that provoke most comments. They are edible too; try cooking them down into an appleflavoured syrup, full of vitamin C but you'll have to beat the birds to them. Another great hedger and perfect in very exposed areas. Cotoneaster horizontalis. Another real toughie and so commonly grown in northern Europe that it doesn't even need a common name and can be somewhat despised for its ubiquity! But its magic is in the flow and curvaceousness of its branches; its horizontal reach forms a precise herringbone pattern. Good in leaf, flower and berry and the birds, at least, appreciate it. Nandina domestica or heavenly bamboo. A great bamboo substitute with its feathery bluegrey foliage forming lovely shadow patterns. The new foliage emerges bright red then clusters of scented white flowers followed by autumnal

leaf colours and long-lasting bright red berries. One of the few plants that can tolerate dry shade and it will attract birds and bees. Viburnum tinus or laurustinus. An adaptable evergreen shrub, good as a specimen planting or makes excellent tough hedging. Dense dark green foliage is a perfect backdrop to the pink flower buds, opening white and scented. Black berries are loved by birds. In sun, part or full shade, becoming very drought tolerant. Mahonia x media Charity or Oregon grape. An evergreen holly look-alike with handsome blue-green prickly foliage symmetrically held on spreading branches. The creamy-yellow scented flowers are rather like lily of the valley and the deep purple berries are edible – try them in porridge! Give it space to spread and best with shade. Skimmia japonica. Compact evergreen shrubs with white scented flowers and shiny red berries when fertilized. Male and

female plants are necessary. For shade or part shade, becomes drought tolerant. Arbutus unedo or strawberry tree. A lovely evergreen shrub or small tree with dark green leathery leaves, scented clusters of white flowers and stunning strawberry-like fruits. These are edible if rather bitter and are mainly used in liqueurs. Lovely caramel peeling bark develops with maturity. A native of the Mediterranean and good in limey soils. Melia azedarach or Persian lilac. A deciduous tree with ferny foliage turning butter yellow in autumn. The scented lilaccoloured flowers are borne in springtime and develop to honeyyellow dangling fruits – lovely against a blue winter sky. The fruits are poisonous, in quantity, to humans but not to birds though they may become drunk on them. Let them enjoy Christmas too!!

These same berries were also used as beads in rosaries.

stunning and we've gift vouchers too.

And don't forget those three traditionals – holly, ivy and mistletoe, the three Kings of Christmastime!

The Garden Centre will be closed from 21st December 2013 until 1st January 2014, inclusive and we'd like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas time.

We've great fruits for Christmas presents too. One of the best gifts is something enduring and productive. Why not give a bottle of gin attached to a lemon tree, or we've the much sought after Bramley apple and Victoria plum. And we've kumquat, limequat or the definitely different citrus purscha, Roman lime – a cross between a lime and bitter orange, a prolific sweet and sour fruiter. And we've masses of deliciously scented roses – bare-root but we can pot, label and gift wrap for you – try Celebration Time, Let's Celebrate, the winter cool Iceberg or the perennial favourite Peace. This year, too, we've a very special collection of David Austin roses. Our range of poinsettias is

RUNNING THE PLUSNET YORKSHIRE MARATHON Jan runs again for charity

2

6.2 miles in 2hours 13minutes 35seconds, that’s ‘all’ it took for Edwin Korir to complete the inaugral PLUSNET Yorkshire marathon. On Oct 20th 2013 for over 6,000 others and myself it was a completely different matter and for some a mile or two too far! My personal journey started 6 months or so before with a spring and summer of early morning training runs some of which included running from Competa to Benjarafe and a loop from Competa-TorroxAlgarrobo- Sayalonga. Most of these twenty mile plus training runs involved aching legs but nothing compared to what was going to happen in the race. The event was very well organized with the start and finish at the University of York. The course was excellent, the first few miles taking the competitors through York, passing the impressive York Minster before exiting the city and

44 The Grapevine

meandering through the Vale of York. After hugging my sister and wishing her good luck it was time to head for zone two and the mass warm up. At approx. 0930 Dickie Bird, ex cricket umpire and true Yorkshireman fired the gun which started the race and after the initial shuffle we were off. The next 13 miles went reasonably well if a little fast, my friend Kevin and I were running at 8.30 mile pace and we were both running comfortably until mile 15 that is…..Kev started to pull away and then, as they say, the wheels came off! 30 seconds, then 45 seconds slower per mile until it felt like an elephant had jumped on my back or my quads had been injected with lead! The dreaded wall! It’s a funny feeling, in my head I knew that I would continue running and finish but everything else was saying STOP!! You feel like you are shuffling but in reality you are

little slower than your training pace. So the last few miles were spent concentrating, imagining that I was on a training run at home. At last the final stretch of tarmac I could see Kim and my friends’ family shouting for me and with a final flourish and a ‘Y’ for Yorkshire I crossed the finish line. It was all over, 4 hrs 5 minute and 19 seconds! A little over my target time but I was pleased, it had been over 10 years since running my last marathon which I had completed in 3hrs 51! Reuniting with Kev and our families at the charity village I found out he had completed his first marathon in 3hrs 49 and my sister came in in 5hrs 10 just three minutes off her personal best! I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who donated, both online through Just giving and personally, altogether we raised approx. €500 for Yorkshire Cancer research. Not content to rest on my laurels I will be competing in the Marathon de Malaga on the 8th December, the Lanzarote Music Marathon on 1st March 2014 and some other shorter distance events in between. However, these events are all training for the BIG event next year on June 21/22 2014. My sister and I will be competing in THE WALL, a 69 mile ultramarathon which follows the route of Hadrians Wall between Carlisle and Newcastle, not for the fainthearted! In conjunction with Gemma of Axareducacion we will be organizing a presentation on the race itself and some charity events for two charities which are to be confirmed. Once again thank you for your donations and my chosen charities look forward to your continued support.

ergio Fernandez is a familiar face in and around Competa having worked for many years for his brother in his construction and estate agency business, Competa Properties. Sergio has lived in Competa all his life and was educated in Competa and Torrox and more recently he has completed a 3 year degree course in Interior Design in Madrid and Malaga. Sergio believes now is the time to branch out on his own and create his own successful business. A prime location became available in Competa last month and Sergio snapped it up. Although, he does admit things moved faster than he initially planned the office was in too good a location to pass over. Thus it became the office for “Sergio Fernandez” properties his own Real Estate

His business is not just about selling houses, he can provide a full range of services from the sale of a property to the refurbishment, redesign, and continuous maintenance of a property. Sergio was keen to explain he is not just interested in selling houses. He believes with his experience, expertise and knowledge of local craftsmen and trades he can add value to all properties. A SHORT HISTORY OF BALLET By Ray Rowden

W

ith Pilon starting the winter programme of opera and ballet I thought a little insight into the history of ballet might make performances more enjoyable. The urge for humans to dance is thousands of years old and crosses many cultures. In Japan, Kabuki is centuries old. In Southern India, Khatakali is an ancient dance form, and here in Spain we have the Flamenco school. Ballet began life at the French court of Louis X1V in the 17th century. Courtly gesture was extended to an art form and Louis himself was an accomplished dancer. It was at this time that the basis of classical ballet was formed. This consisted of exaggerated turn out of the hip joint and five basic positions for the arms and feet. They remain in existence to this day. As Louis became older and less able to dance he formed the first academy of ballet in 1661. He asked a group of celebrated dance teachers to meet in rooms at the Palace. The project flopped when the teachers decided to meet in a pub and often became totally drunk at their meetings! In 1669 the first proper academy was formed where a royal license was granted for public performances of ballet. From here on ballet as an art form began to

58 The Grapevine

take root and some early famous stars began to emerge from the Paris scene. Word spread around other European courts, including Italy, Denmark, and Sweden and crucially to the Tsars in Russia, who were not enjoying being overshadowed by the French. This early globalization of ballet meant that classical technique was developed differently in many countries. For example, in the Danish court the stage was very small. A French choreographer called Bournonville was hired during the 1840's to run the Danish school. Because of the tiny stage, he developed fast and complex movement of the feet and much tighter use of the arms and torso, so you can spot a Danish trained ballet dancer a mile off because of this unique style. The Russian Tsars built big opera houses in Moscow and St.Petersburgh. In Moscow The Bolshoi Ballet was formed and the word Bolshoi literally means big. Because of these vast stages the Russian technique developed an open style, with the use of large jumps, leaps and turns. It was the Russian school, which then began to take classical ballet towards new and stronger technique, and formed the basis of what we know today. Russian ballerinas became

superstars and enjoyed Royal patronage on a grand scale. The stars were also embroiled in clandestine love affairs with royalty and the aristocracy. Ballet first arrived in England in London in 1717 in a piece called The Loves of Mars and Venus, produced by John Weaver, the first English dance master. Ballet in England was slow to develop and was used as filler for Opera productions or in popular music hall entertainments. Many of the popular classical ballets, which we know today, emerged from the 1840's onwards, known as the romantic era. The time between the 1840's and the 1890's was really the Acme of classical ballet. These ballets were famous for the development of the traditional ballet tutu and the use of ballerinas dancing en masse in white. Ballets like Giselle, La Sylphide, La Bayadere and the famous Swan Lake are all examples of the romantic era. The Russian revolution also changed ballet. Lenin kept the ballet under communist control as art for the masses and it became stuck in style and manner. A young art lover called

Serge Diaghilev decided to escape from Russia after 1917 and moved to Paris, where he formed his own dance company which became a sensation across the world. Diaghilev pulled together great dancers from Russia and elsewhere and began to collaborate with great designers and composers of the period, including Stravinsky, Picasso, Bakst and many others, creating entirely new styles of ballet, including The Firebird, The Rite of Spring and Afternoon of a Faun, where a young male dancer, Nijinsky, caused a sensation by simulating orgasm whilst fondling the scarf of the woman he desired. All risky stuff, but the world wanted it by the shed load. Diaghilev died in 1929. His best dancers were scattered across the world, jobless. Many emigrated to America, including Alexandra Danilova and George Balanchine and others, who went on to found great ghilev,

American companies, including American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet. Fortunately for Britain Diaghilev hired two young British dancers, Alicia Markova and Ninette De Valois. As ballet in England had withered on the vine after the death of Diaghilev, De Valois saw the need to create a British school and ballet company. She teamed up with a formidable woman, Lillian Bayliss, who owned The Old Vic Theatre and Sadler's Wells Theatre. Bayliss provided De Valois with premises at Sadler's Wells and in the 1930's The Vic Wells Ballet Company was formed. This went on to become The Royal Ballet, formed by Royal Charter by King George 1V in 1948. Bayliss would rush between the two theater's, arriving at Sadler's Wells to catch the second half of the ballet shows. She had a tiny primus stove kept next to her seat where she would fry sausages during the show as she never had time to stop for supper.

Alicia Markova went on to become the first British superstar, who formed her own dance company, touring the UK and worldwide. Our first homegrown superstar was Margot Fonteyn, who was to form her famous partnership with Rudolph Nureyev, who defected from Russia in 1963 and vastly improved male dancing technique in the western world. From then on Britain has produced many world-class dancers, including Merle Park, Anthony Dowell, Antoinette Sibley, Lynn Seymour and latterly, Darcey Bussell, who you can now see as a judge on Strictly Come Dancing each Saturday. A long journey from the court of Louis X1V.

1.El Robledal. This walk is 4 hours up and 3.5 down and it starts from the Granada side of the mountain. It involves a climb of 1,200m over a 23km route and it is moderate to difficult. 2.Alcaucin / El Alcazar. The estimates for this walk are 7 hours in total with a climb of 1,200m over 23km. It starts from a picnic area above Alcaucin. This is supposed to be easier than El Robledal or the Canillas de Aceituno walk. 3.Canillas de Aceituno. This is reported as being the hardest route of all due to the vertical climb (1,500m) but the most spectacular. It is an 8 hour hike and only for the fit.

CLIMBING MOUNT MAROMA By Jenny Napier

E

very so often, when my group of friends has a few too many wines with dinner, we make grand plans about places we are going to visit and things we are going to do. The place and activity changes but one thing always stays the same – we never actually do any of them (the exception being the Malaga 10k a few years ago). The activity that is mentioned the most often is climbing Maroma – that fantastic & impressive mountain that sits behind Competa. Despite the 5 couples in question being active and up for travelling not single one of us has been to the top of Maroma in 8 years. Maroma is the highest peak in Malaga province at 2,066m (6,778ft). For comparison Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, is only 1,344m (or 4,409ft) high and Scafell Pike in

62 The Grapevine

the Lake District, the highest in England, is 978m (3,290ft). My husband was 40 this October and we decided that it would be fitting to mark the day by finally getting to the summit. So we agreed with our group of friends that Sunday the 13th of October 2013 would be the day we attempted it. Now all I needed to do was figure out how to get 13 people and 5 dogs safely to the top and back! Maroma means rope and refers to the 30m sections of rope used to descend a natural well shaft to an ancient ice house near the summit. I did a bit of research in walking books and on the internet which revealed that there were several different routes each with their own start point and level of difficulty.

4.Sedella. There are paths from the back of Sedella up to the summit. The distance is 16.9km with a climb of 1,141m. They are challenging paths due to the steep vertical sections. 5.Llanadas de Sedlla. This is the easiest and shortest route taking about 5 hours to cover 6 miles. You need a 4 x 4 or car with high ground clearance to reach the start point. You can either arrange a permit and use the track running along the Fogarate fire break or take the track from the Canillas de Albaida fabrica that heads up towards Jatar for which no permit is necessary. I found the wikiloc.com website very useful for planning the walk. On it walkers share their walking routes with descriptions and detailed GPS coordinates. You can load these into Google Earth and your phone enabling you to check your actual position against the route while you are on the walk. There are other phone apps that do a similar job like Runkeeper, Everytrail, AllTrails and MapMyHike. You can view other people's routes online, download them and save your own walks.

We chose to attempt walk 5 so we had enough time to get cleaned up and party at El Pilon afterwards. We all met in the Competa car park at 9.30am. Most had come prepared with walking gear and lots of water, some had not (yes Andy I am talking about you). Seven of us and two dogs piled into the Peter Pan van and the rest of filled up two 4x4s. Peter Pan had got a permit for us so it was an easy drive up to Fogarate and then up the fire break track. The drive is passable by car most of the way – there are just three or four places where water crosses the track where high ground clearance is required. An hour later and we were all stood on the Llanadas de Sedella taking in the fantastic views to Africa one side and inland to Granada and the Sierra Nevada's on the other. If you aren't fit or mobile enough to attempt the walk it is still worth getting to this point in a car just to walk along the ridge and have a picnic. The views are stunning; perfect blue sky, rolling hills below and a carpet of tiny purple crocuses – magic! . Then you continue along a flat track which eventually passes a small grove of trees and another spring . You then climb up through a section of loose rock and low scrub – the path is not well marked here but as long as you head up and left along the ridge you will fine. By the way, our advice is don't be tempted to walk on the scrub and low bushes – stick to the exposed rock. Right by our feet a small, nasty looking black snake slithered out of some of the scrub. We are not certain it was dangerous but venomous snakes are found in this area at this

To advertise call 637 028 873

altitude so be careful. This walk is relatively easy and it's straightforward to get and keep your bearings. However this is only true in good visibility. Due to the height of the walk, thick cloud can form and move quickly. It would be hard to keep your bearings in cloud and there are some dangerous drop offs. So don't attempt this walk if it is not clear. If cloud does start to form give serious consideration to quickly returning to your start point.

increase this difference. If you are attempting the walk in the Winter make sure you take warm clothing – gloves and hats are particularly effective if it's windy.

Then there is a potentially scary bit. There is a 10m section that is a few meters wide, there is a nondangerous slope dropping off to one side and a vertical dangerous drop the other. Most of our group found this section fine but the people who were afraid of heights found it very challenging indeed. This would be no fun at all without good visibility. Having said that the views from this section are some of the most dramatic of the whole walk so make sure you take some photos.

We washed down our butties with some cava which Ali had carried all the way to the top for us. The brave used the loosely attached metal rings to climb to the top of the tower and we all took loads of photos. Margo was the only one bright enough to have brought sun screen so we all passed that round in an attempt at some damage limitation. Then we packed up and headed back. Even though it's downhill it takes just as long to walk back as it did to get there. Walking sticks definitely help on the way back as there is a lot of loose rock. Despite all of us taking litres of water with us, by the time we are back at the cars we are all parched and I make a fortune auctioning off my 6 pack of juice boxes! Then we head back to Competa to the nearest bar, loo and a round or three of shandies!

The final section is a slow climb over loose rock. The path disappears here but you just head up and along the ridge until you see a stone tower – head for this as it marks the summit. From here you have magnificent 360 degree views of the Granada and Malaga provinces, the sea and Africa. It is definitely worth the effort.

This really is a fantastic walk to do. If you are nervous about attempting it or can't get to the start point consider speaking to one of the walking or adventure companies operating from our village. All can offer at least one route up Maroma and they can provide a vehicle, driver and/or guide.

Take plenty of water. My husband, dog and I easily got through over 4 litres between us. There are a couple of springs on the way but I have no idea if the water is clean and we did not risk drinking from them. The temperatures are 5-7 degrees cooler at the top than in Competa and wind chill can greatly

The next walk for me will be Lucero (1,780m or 5,840ft) which is the shark toothed peak at the back of the Lost Village and Nerja. I shall start planning it with my friends now so please read the grapevine in 2021 by which time we might have got round to it!

WEIRD AND WONDERFUL Christmas traditions

Christmas Tradition of Broom Hiding

Roller Skate to Church on Christmas Eve

It may sound made up but for many, many years people in Norway have hidden their brooms on Christmas Eve night. It is not certain when in history the tradition began but the belief is that in olden days people in Norway believed Christmas Eve was a time when evil spirits and witches came out to play and would steal brooms from people's houses to travel on.

In Caracas Venezuela many people attend an early morning mass on Christmas Eve. Nothing strange there then. However, what is weird and wonderful about this church mass is that people travel there on rollerskates. In fact this tradition is so popular that the roads in the city are closed to cars so that people can roller skate to church freely.

The unusual Christmas tradition of hiding brooms continues to this day with families putting them away in the safest part of the house. Brave Norwegian men will even follow the hiding of the brooms by venturing out of the house and firing a shotgun into the night sky to ward off any evil spirits .

The Christmas Pickle Ornament For most families around the world the last decoration to go on the Christmas tree is a star or angel on the top of the tree. However, in Germany, many families continue the Christmas tradition of putting a green, pickle shaped glass ornament on the tree last. The pickle ornament is hidden away on the tree between the branches and on Christmas day

Czech Republic - Shoe Tossing Single women stand outside their house and toss their shoe over their shoulder. If the heel points to the door she will stay single for another year, if the point faces the door she will soon be married! Slovakia - Food Tossing - At the start of Christmas Eve dinner the head of the table tosses some Loksa (bread, poppy seeds and water) onto the ceiling. The more of it that sticks the more fruitful his crops will be next year. England - Christmas Pudding Christmas Pudding is the traditional Christmas dinner dessert in England and traditionally it is made with a sixpence or threepence baked within. Whoever gets the coin keeps it and will enjoy a prosperous year. Portugal - Christmas Ghosts - In Portugal if you are dead you can still enjoy Christmas dinner! Families set out extra places on the table and implore dead family spirits to join them for the feast! Japan - KFC Christmas Advertising has worked wonders for the colonel in Japan and on Christmas Eve thousands of people flock to KFC to enjoy some finger licking chicken! Many branches even take table bookings to deal with the Christmas rush. . Although Christmas for most people is a time of giving, receiving, food and family, for many around the world it also consists of some unusual, strange and wonderful traditions.

The young company has already managed make a name for itself by selling its product in the Madrid, Barcelona and the Levante areas. Now its objective is to conquer markets around the world. Specifically, the firm wants to export its product to Europe, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Eastern countries. Its ambition is high, but it recognises it is a difficult task. "It's been difficult to enter markets outside Malaga as our product is not really wellknown," said CEO Carlos Manuel Aguilera. The company makes around 350 units of their product per week. The baby goats are cooked using extra virgin olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic and parsley, and they're roasted for about three-and-a-half hours.
