French couple were beaten up by security guards while on holiday in southern Spain after accidentally setting off an alarm at a supermarket check-out. The brutal attack on the pair took place in front of their two children, aged five and 13, and was secretly recorded by the eldest child on his mobile phone. The couple, who were on holiday in Torrevieja over the New Year, have reported the incident to police. They claim that a security alarm was activated as they went to leave the Carrefour supermarket in a shopping centre in Torrevieja on Spain’s Costa Blanca. They explained that similar alarms had been set off as they passed through other stores and all the family members were made to repeatedly walk through the security barrier. The family were then led to a security room by the two guards where the woman, was “violently” searched. No stolen items were discovered and when the woman insisted that

they be allowed to leave, she was attacked by the security guards. Video footage filmed by the 13 year-old son showed the guards repeatedly punching the mother as they attempted to handcuff her while the husband was gripped around the neck as he tried to protect her. The screams of the woman and sobbing of her youngest child could be heard throughout.

court in Spain has summoned King Juan Carlos' youngest daughter Cristina over suspected tax and money-laundering crimes - a first for a direct relative of the monarch .Cristina, 48, has been linked to the business affairs of her husband, former Olympic handball player Inaki Urdangarin, who is under investigation for alleged embezzlement of public funds. The decision by a court in Majorca is a major blow to the prestige of the 76-year-old Spanish king, who became head of state after the death in 1975 of
rowth in Spain’s tourist industry is forecast to come in at 1.8 percent this year, triple the increase of 0.6 percent posted in 2013, leading lobby Exceltur said. “Tourism will continue to be the main engine of growth in the Spanish economy in 2014 due to an increase in the tourist GDP, which we estimate at 1.8 percent this year with respect to the levels of 2013, well above the consensus analyst forecast of an increase of 0.6 percent for the Spanish economy as a whole, Exceltur said in its latest report on the sector. The lobby said the sector would continue to be driven by higher consumption from Spain’s main overseas markets due to ongoing instability in the eastern Mediterranean and a recovery -- “albeit still modest” -in domestic demand. The sector was buoyed last year by record overseas arrivals of 60.4 million and overnight hotel stays of 250 million. The sector brought in foreign receipts of 45.1 billion euros and was the main generator of employment in the country, creating a net 22,394 jobs

angría can only be Sangría if it is made in Spain. The European Parliament passed legislation to reform labeling regulations and the protection of geographical indications for aromatized drinks, which include sangría. Such drinks can now only be sold under this denomination if they are produced on the Iberian peninsula. The limits on the use of the term Sangría do not prevent it from being produced in other countries, but in such cases it has to be sold under a different denomination and the word Sangría can only appear as a complement of the denomination “aromatized wine-based drink.” Such products also have to clearly indicate their country of origin.

Weather? Blissfully warm with temperatures peaking reliably in the low 80s and the sea like a cool bath. Cloud and rain are common - but don't usually last more than an hour or two. The flight No more Concorde, so you will have to endure about 9 hrs.
TOP WINTER SUN DESTINATIONS Why, Where and the weather Early January: Maldives Why? One of the driest months of the year on these tiny, idyllic Indian Ocean atolls. The reef-encircled islands with their wonderful beaches are very much honeymoon territory, however, which is fine for quiet escapism, sailing, snorkelling and sub-aqua, but not much more than that. Where? Choose a resort or island according to your interests and budget - make sure it has the water sports, sub-aqua trips or style of accommodation that appeals to you. Weather? It's going to be hot - the mid 80s at least - and with lots of sun (average eight hours a day). The sea will also be pleasantly warm. The flight Non-stop charter flights can do it in 12 hrs; scheduled services usually route via the Middle East and take a couple of hours longer. The bottom line Mid-January: Middle East Why? Excellent hotels and service, great weather and bargain shopping. And if you go to Dubai you will also benefit from the January sales, which cut prices still further. Where? Dubai is the obvious destination, but Oman is rapidly gaining in popularity with tourists - you can
18 The Grapevine
get similar quality for lower prices. Weather? Dry, sunny and warm, with temperatures peaking in the high 70s. The flight Around 8 hrs - note that Emirates, which serves Dubai, won Best Airline in the Telegraph Travel Awards. . Late January: Egypt Why? Exceptional value for money, fascinating sightseeing and wonderful winter climate. If you want to swim, make sure you book a hotel with a pool, also combine it with a few days in Cairo for the pyramids and the museums. Weather? Virtually cloudless skies, no rain, temperatures in the mid 70s and very low humidity. The flight About 5 hrs by charter to Luxor. Early February: Barbados Why? Apart from Christmas and New Year, this is one of the most expensive times to come to Barbados. But you will catch it at its lively best with the winter season in full swing. Where? The west coast has the nicest beaches and the best hotels and restaurants. It's the only place to be.
Late February: Madeira Why? You don't come here for the beaches (there are none) but for excellent hotels and lush scenery. At this time of year there is an added attraction - the Mardi Gras carnival doesn't match Rio's, but still involves lively street processions on Carnival Saturday (February 21) and Shrove Tuesday (February 24). Where? Funchal is the capital and the best base, though Simply Travel (see below) has some interesting, more rural quintas if you want a quieter time. Weather? Madeira has a mild winter climate (temperatures will be in the mid60s) and there is always a risk of some rain in winter. Expect six hours of sunshine a day, however. The flight About 3 hours Early March: Morocco Why? Spring comes early to the city's lush gardens, where semi-tropical birds roost and swoop among the trees. If you can afford it, nothing beats waking up to the sound of birdsong coming from the Mamounia Hotel gardens. Where? Marrakesh. There are no beaches of course, but this historic oasis, at the foothills of the Atlas mountains, is Morocco's most fascinating city. Weather? Temperatures will be edging into the mid 70s, with lots of sun but cool, fresh evenings and nights. The flight About 4.5 hrs.

Redwell® Heat up your home in an energy saving, healthy and stylish way!
I
n comparison to conventional heaters, infrared waves don't heat the air, but do heat people, walls and furniture. You absorb the heating waves which makes you feel nice and cosy. Walls and furniture store the heat much longer than air and then release it back into the living space. In this way, the walls remain dry and mould has no chance to spread. Another advantage is that the air does not circulate, therefore no dust is lifted up into the air. Partial Storage Heater saves energy Redwell® Infrared Heaters are so called Partial Storage Heaters. The storage material inside the heater keeps the running times lower and therefore saves energy. The heater continues to emit its cosy warmth, also during those periods of time when no energy is consumed. Infrared is wellness warmth We humans have evolved with the capacity to absorb infrared heat, which in turn has a beneficial effect on our immune system. In Japan
1967 Dr. Tadishi Ishikawa designed the first model of an infrared cabin. This system was initially only used by doctors. In 1981, the Infrared sauna for general public use was released. Since then it has proved very successfully in the private sector as well as by professionals such as doctors and therapists in clinics and spas, to support their treatment. Infrared heat increases circulation in the skin, stimulates the metabolism and is very hygienic due to cleaner air. Rheumatoid patients respond to a lack of air circulation and a consistent humidity is very positive. Asthmatic patients also benefit from clean air and stable humidity. Allergy sufferers can breathe a deep sigh of relief because there is less dust, pollen, bacteria and mould spores in the air. Redwell® Infrared Heaters offer the best benefits: Energy savings, high comfort, healthy indoor environment and NO maintenance costs! Contact us or visit the exhibition in our shop! blue eyes were just too hard to resist and after a successful home check, little Churi is now living with his new family in Torrox and receiving all the love and care he deserves after such a horrible start in life.
ACTION FOR ANIMALS New Homes for three puppies
O
n a freezing night in December I received the news that there were two abandoned pups in the local rubbish depot in Cómpeta. I made my way there and found the two tiny puppies, only around 3 weeks old, huddled together in a battered cardboard box. I've no idea how long they'd been there, but they were cold and hungry and in danger of becoming seriously dehydrated. Our charity, Action for Animals, has no rescue centre for abandoned animals, so I carefully lifted them into the pet carrier I'd taken with me, placed it in the car and transported them to the safety of my house. The next morning, in our charity shop, I was handed another beautiful little pup, about two and a half months old who'd been thrown out of a car on the Periana road, the night before. Fortunately, a gentleman who was on his way back to Cómpeta in the car behind, witnessed the event and stopped to rescue the

poor little chap. He'd taken him home with the intention of keeping him, but his own dog hadn't taken kindly to the new addition to the household, so he'd brought him into our shop in the hope that we might be able to rehome him. I took this loveable little fellow home too and began the task of looking for fosterers or new homes for all three pups. The two pups from the rubbish depot were eventually fostered by Maggie Riordan who wrote about her fostering experience for us in last month's Grapevine. Maggie did an excellent job of rearing them and we're pleased to say that Bill and Ben have now been successfully rehomed with the Watson family at The Pavo Real, who fell in love with the two of them and decided to adopt them both! What a happy ending! The little pup who was so callously thrown from a car in Periana also found his new home. A family who have a regular stall at the local Cómpeta market saw him and were completely enamoured by him. His beautiful
But there are others, like Little Pancho, still waiting to be adopted. He was found on a cold rainy night, wandering around Cómpeta, disorientated and terrified. Lucky for him, a caring family discovered him and took him into their home. They were unable to foster him for very long, due to other commitments, but were kind enough to temporarily care for him over the Christmas and New Year period until another fosterer could be found. Perhaps someone out there reading this can make it a happy ending for Pancho, too? Fostering saves lives. None of the animals mentioned in this article would be alive today if it hadn't been for the wonderful people who came forward to offer foster care for them. Please, if you can foster an animal for a short time come and see us in the charity shop for an informal chat or call us on 660586040. There is no cost to you! You provide the love and care and we'll provide everything else! Nina Cordoray Downes Action for Animals Charity Shop, Avenida de la Constitución 59, Cómpeta. DRIVING LAWS IN SPAIN What you need to keep in your car and other useful info.
Y
ou should keep your original driving licence with you when you are driving your car in Spain as well as the original ownership documents and ITV certificate. It is recommend that you also keep a copy of the insurance policy and insurance premium receipt. The law has changed some years ago and the Guardia Civil and local Police now use the "FIVA" Insured Vehicle Computer Database to check if your vehicle is insured. This means that, you no longer need your original insurance documents in the car. It is also recommend that you take copies to keep at home but still keep the originals in the car whilst using it. You must wear seat belts in the front of the car at all times. Where fitted then seat-
36 The Grapevine
belts must be worn in the back seats as well. It is also a legal requirement to carry two warning triangles in the vehicle in case you breakdown as well as a fluorescent jacket, which must be reachable from inside of the vehicle. Children under 12 years of age are not permitted to sit in the front seats. It is mandatory to keep the following equipment in your vehicle; Set of light bulbs and the tools necessary to replace them. (This is currently under review as some new cars require special tools, normally only available at a garage, to change light bulbs). Two warning triangles, officially approved by the Internal Ministry (Ministerio de Interior), spare tyre and tools necessary to replace it. a fluorescent jacket which you
must be able to put on before leaving the car in the event of breakdown. It is generally accepted that, where there is no clear indication of right of way at a junction, then traffic coming from your right has priority. This will not be the case where there are road markings or signs to indicate otherwise. All EU driving licenses are recognised. If you are European Union citizen then you may drive in Spain using your existing license. Crash Helmets are now compulsory on all bikes, including mopeds and scooters in Spain. Using a mobile phone when driving is also prohibited by law.

I spoke to the owners Nick and Julie about their new service offering. They explained they will offer the best quality of Television available by the Internet. It won’t be quite as good as television sent and received by Satellite as people know it now. However the bb4s team is confident their system will provide the best Internet Television service available. bb4s has invested and tested, looked at the competition and believe their infrastructure, experience and technology will provide the best quality IPTV service that will be on the market when the satellite change over occurs. The bb4s team is in control of their entire infrastructure from their Malaga servers to their Internet and IPTV customers. They do not just simply sell on 3rd party services. bb4s controls, owns and operates as much of the total infrastructure as possible.
IPTV SERVICE bb4s have a solution
I
t has been a subject of much debate and for some, horror, that soon we will lose English television as we know it southern Spain. With the launch of a new satellite above England it appears that coverage will no longer extend to southern Spain. This means that it will be highly probable we will lose reception of many major channels currently viewed on freesat. It is also very likely channels will be affected on Sky television too. However, until the Satellite changeover occurs no one actually can predict the exact impact. Although, there is no doubt there will be problems and the loss of channels we are
40 The Grapevine
used to receiving. In light of these predicted changes bb4s (Rebeloak SL) can provide a solution. They have researched and made investment in order for anyone with an Internet connection to continue to watch English Television through the medium IPTV. bb4s based in Algarrobo Costa started providing Internet service nine years ago and have expanded carefully throughout the whole of the Axarquia. Their services include both the fast wireless Internet and low cost Telephone services and now Television. bb4s are the biggest independent Internet provider east of Malaga with over 4,000 regular customers.
In order to receive their IPTV service, you need a good Internet connection and to buy a set top box which costs just €89 from their office in Algarrobo. Just connect it to your TV. Test it for 30 days to see if you are happy with it, and if you are, you will be billed €14.99 a month for receiving Television via the Internet. The service includes 34 UK TV stations (with more to come), 16 UK radio stations, and 30 days rewind and catch-up. See adverts opposite for station details. If after 30 days of using the service you are not happy simply take it back to the bb4s office for a refund. Charges for the service will not start until the beginning of the following month so you can also have up to 30 days of free service too (depending on when you buy the box). Also, bb4s are happy for you to cancel your subscription and take it up again at your leisure, which is a good service for holiday home owners. So reports have it February is the month for the changes to occur and bb4s can offer a solution.

HEAT 4 FREE Stay in control of your energy consumption
S
panish Electricity prices have soared by 42 percent since the economic crisis erupted in 2008. At the auction held in December 2013 to set the electricity tariff for the first quarter of 2014 the price soared beyond expectation threatening to push electricity costs up by a further 11 percent for 2014. The outcry was such that Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's conservative government intervened to cancel the result, fixing an increase of 2.3 percent for the quarter while it seeks a new pricing mechanism. So how bad is the situation:- By the end of 2012, 17.9 percent of Spanish households -- more than three million -- were unable to adequately warm their homes, in 2013 a family with two children paid an average 844.80 euros for electricity, up from 590.20 euros in 2008, according to Industry Ministry data. (Source; National Statistics Institute) We use electrical appliances every day, and in most households more so than gas or oil. Recently we've been installing Owl Energy Monitors for

Having a visual reminder of how much electricity you are using and how much it is costing you serves as a great reminder to go and switch off those lights in the next room, or worse still that evil oil filled radiator or fan heater. You'll be amazed how much energy some of your appliances use, and how easily you can reduce your energy costs buy switching off those TV's, Digital Boxes and PC's we're not using. Some manufacturer's appliances can consume up to 95% of their running power when on sand-by!!

WEIRD AND WONDERFUL Strange News from Around the World

essica Wynter, 21, was rushed to hospital after going into labour one-week early only to give birth while in the car park of King's College Hospital in London on December 27. Her son Kye was born as Ms Wynter struggled across the car park to the south London hospital, and all that prevented him hitting the ground was the new mum's choice of attire - a black and white polka dot onesie. Ms Wynter, a student at Coventry university, said she thought she had broken water, only to hear a cry and find her newborn son in the leg of her adult-sized baby grow, an item of clothing that have recently become enormously popular in the UK. “I just threw on the onesie as I came out of the bath. It could have been anything else, it's so lucky, if it had been something like a nightie I don't think he would have survived," Ms Wynter said."I was in so much shock when I saw him on my leg. I

Ms Schuyler posted a video of her achievement on her YouTube channel and commented, "world record for eating just a 72 oz steak is 6 min 48 seconds. I took it down just a little bit faster :)". The steak eating challenge was set up in 1948 by the owners of the Sayler's Old Country Kitchen in Portland, Oregon. Those most vulnerable, and commonly used in our gardens, are eucalyptus, pines, false peppers and acacias – or mimosa as they are commonly called. Given that there are some 1300 species of acacia, I always feel it´s a pity that there aren´t more on offer here because they are so well suited to our climate. In 2005 some acacias were reclassified but I suspect they´ll long be known by their original name. The bulk come from Australia and the Far East and are mainly thornless whereas the African ones are more commonly very spiny to deter some hefty grazers. CASTILIAN GARLIC SOUP - SOPA DE AJO CASTELLANA Winter warming soup
A
fried-bread version of the classic Garlic soup that was often eaten early on winter mornings before going out into the bitter cold. The three essential ingredients in this soup--garlic, bread, and water--all need to be of good quality. Do not be tempted into thinking that stock is an improvement since it masks the other flavours. Beyond that, though, you can improvise around the local variations in ingredients: lard is used rather than olive oil in Zamora, for example, and pepper seeds and chopped tomatoes are added in Le贸n. You can also saut茅 the garlic first. Usually the bread is broken into small pieces so it swells into sops, but I like this fried-bread version.
58 The Grapevine
Makes 4 servings. Prep Time: 25 min. Cook Time: 50 min. Ingredients: 3 cups water 4 plump garlic cloves, peeled 3 inch length of French bread or an equivalent chunk of coarse crusty bread, not processed or steam baked, and at least 1 day old 3 oz olive oil 1-2 tsp piment贸n de la Vera smoked paprika (May be mild, bittersweet or spicy-hot) Salt 4 eggs Preparation: Heat the water in a flameproof casserole. Chop or pound the garlic to a paste, using a mortar and pestle, a garlic press, or the
blade of a knife. Add the garlic to the water and leave it to cook through for 5-10 minutes. Meanwhile, slice the bread very thinly (leave the crust on) and fry it in the olive oil, sprinkling a little piment贸n and salt in the oil. Add the bread and oil to the water and simmer gently for another 10-15 minutes. You can leave the soup for several hours or overnight at this stage. Just before serving, poach the eggs in the soup: break each egg, in turn, into a ladle and lower into the soup. Remove from the heat as soon as the white is set and serve into deep bowls. The idea is to stir the soup around so the egg breaks and continues cooking in threads.

health. Even if you eat “perfectly” all the time with loads of fresh fruits and vegetables, you still need to boost your nutrition with a supplement. What supplements you will need will depend significantly on your lifestyle. 5.Exercise regularly. It is important to exercise regularly, even if only for 15 minutes a day! Get out and take a short walk and enjoy the cooler weather. 6.Get the right amount of sleep every night. The average person needs 6-8 hours of sleep per night. If you're not getting enough sleep, your body is extremely vulnerable to illness. Sleep is very much like fuel that recharges your batteries! You've got to do it to keep the machine running. 7.Wash your hands regularly. Keep the bacteria and viruses off your hands and out of your mouth and eyes. Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer close-by for those instances where you can't get to soap and water. 8.Don't smoke. Most of you already know this, but it bears repeating because smoking significantly weakens your immune system.

Increase water consumption (even more than normal!). 10 Winter Skin Care Tips For many people, the cold clear days of winter bring more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks. They also bring uncomfortable dryness to the skin of the face, hands, and feet. For some people, the problem is worse than just a general tight, dry feeling: They get skin so dry it results in flaking, cracking, even eczema (in which the skin becomes inflamed). As soon as you turn the heat on indoors, the skin starts to dry out . It doesn't matter if you heat your home using oil, wood, or electricity. The skin gets dry. Sound familiar? Read on to 10 tips for boosting your winter skin care regimen, so that your skin stays moist and healthy through the winter months. 1. Seek a Specialist If you go to your local drugstore, you'll be hard put to find a salesperson who can give you good advice. That's why going to an esthetician or dermatologist even once is a good investment. Such a specialist can analyze your skin type, troubleshoot your current skin care regimen, and give you advice on the skin care products you should be using. But that doesn't mean you'll be stuck buying high-end products. Inexpensive products work just as well as highend ones,. In fact, the extra price you pay for the expensive stuff is often just for packaging and marketing. What's most important is how your skin responds to the product -- and how you like its feel, not how much money you paid for it. 2. Moisturize More You may have found a moisturizer that works just fine in spring and summer. But as weather conditions change, so, too, should your skin care routine. Find an "ointment"
moisturizer that's oil-based, rather than water-based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. (Hint: Many lotions labeled as "night creams" are oil-based.).But choose your oils with care because not all oils are appropriate for the face. Instead, look for "nonclogging" oils, like avocado oil, mineral oil, primrose oil, or almond oil. Shea oil -- or butter -- is controversial, because it can clog facial pores. You can also look for lotions containing "humectants," a class of substances (including glycerine, sorbitol, and alpha-hydroxy acids) that attract moisture to your skin. 3. Slather on the Sunscreen No, sunscreen isn't just for summertime. Winter sun -combined with snow glare -- can still damage your skin. Try applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face and your hands (if they're exposed) about 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply frequently if you stay outside a long time. 4. Give Your Hands a Hand The skin on your hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it's harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather. This can lead to itchiness and cracking. Wear gloves when you go outside; if you need to wear wool to keep your hands warm, slip on a thin cotton glove first, to avoid any irritation the wool might cause. 5. Avoid Wet Gloves and Socks Wet socks and gloves can irritate your skin and cause itching, cracking, sores, or even a flareup of eczema. 6. Hook Up the Humidifier Central heating systems (as well as space heaters) blast hot dry air throughout our homes and offices. Humidifiers get more moisture in the air, which helps
prevent your skin from drying out. Place several small humidifiers throughout your home; they help disperse the moisture more evenly. 7. Hydrate for Your Health, Not for Your Skin If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: Drinking water helps your skin stay young looking. In fact, it's a myth. Water is good for your overall health and "the skin of someone who is severely dehydrated will benefit from fluids 8. Grease Up Your Feet Yes, those minty foot lotions are lovely in the hot summer months, but during the winter, your feet need stronger stuff. Try finding lotions that contain petroleum jelly or glycerine instead. And use exfoliants to get the dead skin off periodically; that helps any moisturizers you use to sink in faster and deeper. 9. Pace the Peels If your facial skin is uncomfortably dry, avoid using harsh peels, masks, and alcohol-based toners or astringents, all of which can strip vital oil from your skin. Instead, find a cleansing milk or mild foaming cleanser, a toner with no alcohol, and masks that are "deeply hydrating," rather than clay-based, which tends to draw moisture out of the face. And use them a little less often. 10. Ban Superhot Baths Sure, soaking in a burning-hot bath feels great after frolicking out in the cold. But the intense heat of a hot shower or bath actually breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, which can lead to a loss of moisture. You're better off with just warm water and staying in the water a shorter amount of time." A lukewarm bath with oatmeal or baking soda, can help relieve skin that is so dry it has become itchy,

iPad Mini with Retina Display The advantage of the Mini, even when it had lower specifications, was always its portability, however. It retains that, augmented now with a brilliant screen that makes reading, editing photos and more seem significantly easier. But with the iPad Air now much more portable too, there’s less to choose between them. The 5MP camera, adequate stereo speakers and a good FaceTime camera make the Mini a superb device, but the Air is a superb device too. This is a seriously improved Mini, only really competing against a seriously improved full-size iPad. Both have processors that make gaming and the most demanding apps run smoothly. It is the only tablet in its class. Screen 7.9-inch Retina Weight 331g Storage 16/32/64/128GB OS iOS7 Processor M7 motion coprocessor. A7 chip with 64-bit architecture Camera Front: 1.2MP Rear: 5MP
iPad Air While Android phones have caught up with the iPhone, and in many aspects surpass it, the iPad remains a unique proposition and the iPad Air is the best iPad yet. Its light weight and thin form mean it gets out of the way – you don’t notice it, but you notice what you’re doing on it. That, potentially, unleashes a new generation of tablet-based productivity. The fact that Apple is now giving away even more software means that perhaps the rebranding is, therefore, more than simply a marketing exercise. Air may yet be the oxygen for a new wave of uses for the iPad. Screen 240 x 169.5 x 7.5mm Weight 469g Screen 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display, 2048x1536 resolution at 264 pixels per inch (ppi) Processor dual channel (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and MIMO OS A7 chip with 64-bit architecture and M7 motion coprocessor Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n)
New Google Nexus 7 The updated version of Google’s Nexus 7 hit UK shelves on 13 September. Produced again by hardware company Asus, the emphasis with the new model is on portability, weighing 50g less than last year’s version and coming in at 2mm thinner. And as with its predecessor, one serious advantage over competitors is its price: £199.99 for the 16GB version and £239.99 for the 32GB. Early reviews report improved graphics on the Nexus 7 2’s 1920 x 1200 Full HD 1080 display, a first for 7-inch tablets with 323 pixels per inch. It also offers the possibility of restricted profiles, allowing limits to be set for children’s browsing, and faster switching between accounts. Taking pictures may not be the primary function of tablets, but this one still comes with a 5MP camera on the back and a 1.2MP camera on the front. Screen 7.02” 1920x1200 Weight
TOP 10 TABLETS ON THE MARKET A review of the best tablets, which one will you choose?
KINDLE FIRE f you use the internet, you almost certainly use Amazon, and if you read books it’s increasingly certain that you also own a Kindle. The Kindle Fire HDX is Amazon’s attempt to move those who already download books into the burgeoning category of those who also download music, film and TV. And while Amazon does indeed let you browse the web or use email on the Fire HDX, more than anything else it is a device for browsing the company’s own store and watching media. As such, it’s got a lovely screen, offering an exceptional resolution with 323 pixels per inch on the 7-inch version. The tablets have quadcore Snapdragon 800 processors running at 2.2 GHz, providing over three times the processing power of the previous generation of Kindle Fire HD tablets. Amazon claims that the devices have 11 hours of battery life based on mixed usage, and up to 17 hours of reading. Screen 7” 1920x1200 Weight 303g Storage 16/32/64GB OS Android

290g Storage 16/32GB OS Android Jelly Bean, 4.3 Processor 1.5GHz quadcore Xperia Tablet Z Sony’s Xperia Tablet Z is the companion device to its (xcellent) Xperia Z mobile phone, and both use a slimline design that is stylish, angular, waterproof and dustproof. The Tablet Z is a lightweight 495g and just 6.9mm thick, yet it gave me a great battery life of more than seven hours. It feels more futuristic even than the iPad simply because it is so implausibly thin and lasts so long. . It’s the tablet you could take into the bath if you really can’t put down that book or magazine because it is waterproof/ Screen 10.1" 1200 x 1920 Weight 495g Storage 16/32 GB OS Android 4.2 Processor 1.5 GHz quadcore Galaxy Note 2 At 5.5”, the Galaxy Note 2 is both a phone and a tablet - hence the ‘phablet’ moniker. But as much of the appeal comes the unique SPen technology. This stylus allows you to garner extra information about what’s on the device’s screen simply by hovering above it, and the superfast processor means that this is a device that is as comfortable as a media consumption device as it is as a work unit. For some that means the Note 2 is neither one thing nor the other, but many people still use this it as their main, sole device. It may look like an over-sized phone, but its advantages are considerable. Large screen and impressive capabilities aside, it’s also blazing a new trail. Screen 5.5” 1280x720 Weight 183g Storage 16/32/64GB, microSD OS Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Processor 1.6GHz quadcore New iPad The latest iPad is a beautiful design that works blazingly fast – the new processor may not technically be the fastest, but it feels slicker than any other tablet on the market. With Apple’s ‘Retina display’ the company also

has a screen that is, again, not technically the best on the market but somehow looks arguably more lovely. And now that there are 4G options and a 128GB version, you need never run out of storage again. If there’s a criticism of the new version it’s that it changes the dock connector so that your old cables will need replacing, and battery life could be better. But if you’re prepared to spend the money, the iPad remains – and certainly feels – like the best fullsize tablet on the market. Web browsing, emails and more never felt so elegant. Screen 9.7” 2048x1536 Weight 652g Storage 16/32/64/128GB OS iOS6.1 Processor 1.4GHz dualcore Microsoft Surface 2 The Surface 2, which replaces the Surface RT, is powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, making apps run faster and smoother, increasing battery life to up to 10 hours for video playback. It will ship with Windows RT 8.1, bringing improvements in areas such as personalisation, search, multitasking, built-in apps, the Windows Store experience and connectivity to cloud-based storage. The latest version of the operating system is built for touch screens such as the Surface, and indeed this device really does make the operating system make more sense than on a conventional laptop. The tablet is also marginally thinner and lighter than its predecessor, at 0.35 inches (9mm) thick and 1.49 lbs (676g). Surface feels like a lovely product with some great ideas, not least the ultra-slim keyboard. But it’s a device in search of a market. Screen 10.6” 1920x1080 Weight 676g Storage 32/64GB OS Windows RT 8.1 Processor NVIDIA Tegra 4 Galaxy Note 10.1 Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1 is the company’s most serious attempt to change the face of computing yet – that A4 notepad can, Samsung hope, be replaced by this computerised version,
which with the S-Pen you can write notes on, and then later on in the day you can watch films and TV shows too. It’s the ultimate work and play device, the company hopes can take on the iPad on all fronts and more. Those are lofty ambitions and for earlyadopting technology fans there is a lot to like in the Note 10.1. But it hardly heralds the paperless office yet, because the handwriting recognition isn’t perfect, and it also struggles because the screen isn’t up to the quality of its rivals. With 4G connectivity, however, there’s much to like the Note for – it’s a product for geeks for now, but it heralds at least part of the future. It’s also a super-charged version of the S-Pen-free Galaxy Tab 10.1. Screen 10.1” 1280x800 Weight 600g Storage 16/32/64/128GB, microSD OS Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Processor 1.4GHz quadcore NEXUS 10 Like the Nexus 7, Google’s Nexus 10 offers a great tablet at a really great price – unfortunately with the this larger model feels like it doesn’t quite have the class of the Nexus 7. That’s not because the screen isn’t fantastic, or because the build-quality isn’t perfectly decent. Rather it’s because of details, such as the way the case replaces the speaker cover, so you can’t easily remove it, and above all the fact that this good hardware reveals the lack of premium tablet apps for Android. On a screen this nice, there should be more to do than simply read books or watch films. Where the iPad provides that, with apps such as Leonardo Da Vinci’s Anatomy offering a novel experience, the Nexus 10 only reveals that Google has a way to go. But not being as good as the iPad is not a major barrier when the price is this attractive. Indeed, the Nexus 10 is still cheaper than the two-generationsold iPad 2. Screen 10.1” 2560x1600 Weight 603g Storage 16/32GB OS Android 4.2 Processor 1.7GHz quadcore

consortium. The mountain or Serrano ham is made from several different breeds of white pigs, such as Duroc, Landrace or Large White. They are fed mainly cereals and cured from 7 to 16 months. Jamón Ibérico – This ham is made only from the Iberian pig. The breeding of the Iberian pig is restricted to an area in Southwestern Spain and Southeastern Portugal. Although fed some cereals, these pigs also roam countryside and feed on acorns. The curing process lasts from 14 to 36 months.
AN INTRODUCTION TO SPANISH HAM Jamon Serrano and Jamon Iberico
Background and History. Spanish ham is greatly prized as a gourmet food both in Spain and around the world. It is eaten regularly in most Spanish households. In fact, not only is Spain the largest producer of airdried-cured ham, Spaniards are the number one consumers in the world! Every Spaniard eats about 5 kilograms of cured ham per year. That is double what the Italians eat. There are various types of cured ham in Spain, ranging in price from economical to very expensive. Grocery stores, sausage shops and supermarkets all sell various types of ham and many will not be of a Denomination of Origin. That does not mean it does not great tasting, but it simply did not pass the strict quality control standards Ham is historically important food, dried and cured with salt for centuries. The people of the Iberian Peninsula ate pork and ham in their diet, even in the Roman era. However, when the Moors conquered the Peninsula,

because of their religious beliefs, eating pork was prohibited. After the Christians regained control and forced the Muslims and Jews to either convert or go into exile, pork regained its popularity. Types of Cured Spanish Ham There are basically two different types of cured hams in Spain, jamón serrano or “mountain ham,” and jamón ibérico or “Iberian ham.” Jamón Serrano - There are almost 2,000 producers of Serrano ham in Spain. Eighteen of these producers formed the Consorcio de Jamón Serrano Español in 1990. The name Jamón Serrano is now controlled by the European Union since the year 2000 and it protects the processing of this product, although it does not apply to a specific region. Look for the label that has an "S" in the shape of a ham, and says SERRANO ESPAÑOL if you want to buy Jamón Serrano from the
Denominations of Origin and Quality Control Ham is such a treasured food that not only are there several Denominations of Origin, but there is even a chain of Museos de Jamón or “Ham Museums” around Spain! The Denomination of Origin of Teruel (in Aragon) was the first granted by Spain’s Department of Agriculture in 1984. Since then, other Denominations of Origin for ham have been granted. As with all Denominations of Origin, there is strict control of the quality of the product. For example, in order to carry the name jamón de Teruel, the regulations of the Denomination of Origin of Teruel cover every stage of the process, including the following: The pigs must be of a certain breed, be fed only cereals and grains of the local region, be of a certain weight when slaughtered, and spend 14 months curing in Teruel. While curing, they must pass a number of quality control checks, as well. Besides Teruel, other areas are well-known for their excellent ham: Trevelez (a small village in the Sierra Nevada) which is located in the highest peak in Spain Girona province in the region of Cataluña Soria province in the region of Castilla-Leon

"That's the Acme 3000 Auto Sorter System. It can sort 150,000 letters an hour and it's 99.5% accurate. It's controlled by 12 supercomputers, each of which is 5000 times more powerful than an average desktop PC. It has over 15,000 state-of-the-art optical location identification sensors, contains enough circuit boards to entirely cover the pitch at the new Wembley stadium and it has 200 miles of fibre-optic cable. It cost over £100 million to develop," he boasted proudly. "What happens to the letters after it's finished sorting them?" I asked. "We give them to a bloke on a push bike.”
She's in there now, ripping all the plates in half. My dad found out I had an imaginary girlfriend. I kissed a girl in the club and she said, "Oh my God, you've been smoking. It's just like licking an ashtray." "You non-smokers have some funny habits," I replied.

He said, "You know, you could do better." "Thanks dad, that means a lot," I replied. "I was talking to your girlfriend.”
I took a taxi to my court appearance the other day. "What are you here for?" asked the driver. "My bankruptcy hearing. You might as well come too.”

DEATH OF EXPAT ON COMPETA TORROX ROAD A British expatriate has died after being buried alive in a tragic accident. Andrew McGaughey, 65, was working in a ditch on his property when disaster struck. According to 112 emergency service sources, he was found buried in the ditch on his rural plot of land between Torrox and Competa near the Pavo Real restaurante. Sources said the accident seemed to have been caused by the displacement of excavated soil that gave way due to recent rains, soil from a project the victim had initiated on his property. He had told neighbours he was concerned about the stability of his home due to the subsidence. EL PLAYAZO BEACH BARS Beach bars that have been open for more than 20 years on El Playazo beach in Nerja may be forced to close. The Environment department of the regional government (Junta de Andalucia) has launched a disciplinary proceeding against them for allegedly violating the Coastal Law, local newspaper SUR has reported. They have been told to “immediately cease” any commercial activity in the area as they are occupying land under the public domain.
The Junta also wants them to pay a €300,000 fine each, which amounts to more than €2 million altogether. The owners the four beach bars, two boat yards and the ice-cream kiosk affected received a notification from the regional government only days before Christmas. They were given a month to lodge any objection.
LAS HUERTOS IN ALCAUCIN Residents of an urbanisation in Alcaucin who came to Spain to live a dream are facing a nightmare. The town council, under instruction from the regional government, revoked the building licenses of the 13 houses comprising Las Huertas urbanisation. Now the residents, most of them in their 60s and 70s, fear they will have the threat of demolition hanging over their heads during 2014. NEW GOLF COURSE PLANNED A €165 million golf course and 1,000 luxury homes project bordering two natural parks has been given the green-light. The Spanish Supreme Court authorised project in La Coladilla area of Nerja which had been halted in 2006 by the regional government (Junta de Andalucia).
