It’s well and truly winter while I’m writing this, snow on the mountains, low temperatures and the fire on every day. I much prefer the summer and only hope that by the time you are reading this the milder winter temperatures that Spain is known for have returned, rather than the freezing weather warnings we are currently having. This month we have Valentines day and the businesses I spoke to about this day had mixed feelings. Some entered into the spirit of the occasion and are putting on special meals, romantic music and lighting, whilst others are completely ignoring it! This does mean that whatever school of thought you are, there is a place for you to enjoy February 14th! February is also carnival time around Spain with the biggest displays in Tenerife and Cadiz but most localities do something to mark the occasion even if its not on the scale of those places. Also, in February is the Seville Tapas Fair when the city’s top bars and restaurants compete with one another to produce the best tapas. Later on in the month there is the International Jerez Flamenco Festival which attracts flamenco artists from all over the world. It usually begins in late February and continues for a fortnight. So it might be a little colder in Spain than we would like but there is still plenty to do and go and see.

authorities in Barcelona look to open up the city to pedestrians. Lanes of the iconic Passeig de Gràcia are also set to be closed to cars during the same hours between Cinc d'Oros, where Passeig de Gràcia meets La Diagonal, and Gran Via. The trial closures will come into effect by March at the latest, according to Catalan daily La Vanguardia. Instead of cars, those section of the streets closed to cars will be filled with seats, tables and deckchairs, under the ambitious plans. A large section of La Diagonal will also become a de facto part with a programme of cultural events laid on. If the trial closures are a success, other streets will be incorporated into the plans, Barcelona's town hall has said.

he largest illegal cigarette factory ever found in Spain has been busted by Guardia Civil. Ten people in Andalucia have been arrested for their role in producing around 65,000 packets of cigarettes per day at the illegal factory in Sevilla. Thirty tonnes of illegal tobacco and 64,500 packs of cigarettes ready for sale to the public were discovered by Guardia Civil.

pain’s Supreme Court will investigate a paternity suit against the country’s former King Juan Carlos, in a further blow to the country's scandal-hit royal family. The court announced that it will hear the case of Belgian housewife Ingrid Jeanne Sartiau, born in 1966, who claims that King Juan Carlos is her father. It is the first lawsuit to be brought against Juan Carlos, 77, who lost his total immunity from prosecution when he abdicated in favour of his son Felipe last June. A spokesman for the royal palace declined to comment, saying only that it respected the judiciary's independence. The court dismissed a second paternity suit

lodged by Spanish waiter Alberto Solá Jiménez, 58, who claims to be King Juan Carlos’s son. A court official told AP that Mr Solá's claim lacked legal basis. Mr Solá has claimed that his mother, the daughter of a well-known Barcelona banker, may have had an affair with King Juan Carlos before he married Queen Sofia. Mr Solá and Ms Sartiau joined forces in 2012 and underwent DNA tests that showed there was a 91 per cent chance that they had a parent in common. Their bid to make King Juan Carlos take a paternity test at the time failed due to his protection from prosecution as a serving monarch.

panish unemployment has recorded the sharpest drop since the country adopted the euro in 1999, in a further sign the economy is managing to finally get a hold on its joblessness problem. There was a fall of more than 253,000 in registered unemployment from December 2013 to December 2014, an annual decrease of 5.4pc and the biggest since the country joined the eurozone, according to government figures. Monthly jobless claims also fell by 64,405 for the last month of the year, representing the second largest December decrease on record. Meanwhile, the number of people registering as in work rose by 417,000 in 2014, the first annual increase since 2007. Total employment in the country currently stands at 16.8 million. The Spanish economy has been undergoing a process of labour market reforms in a bid to boost its competitiveness and stimulate growth after years of recession. The economy began to expand for the first time in over two years in the second half of 2013 and is expected to grow by 1.6 pc in 2015, according to the OECD.

his month we've got more good news! We're so pleased to announce that the last one of the kittens recently found abandoned in the rubbish bins in Cรณmpeta has finally found his wonderful new home, pictured here with Chris Fullylove. In last month's edition of The Grapevine we wrote about Florence, the abandoned dog who was pregnant and gave birth to four pups while being fostered by Jon Wood. Sadly, one of them didn't make it but the remaining three have all grown to be beautiful, strong and healthy. Florence and one of her pups have been lucky enough to be adopted, but her two remaining pups, pictured here, are still looking for their permanent homes. Can you offer one of them a loving home? Action for Animals will pay for vaccinations,

microchip, passport and neutering if you can give either of them a home. They're both absolutely adorable! But what about Pixie? Can anyone help her? Pixie really needs your help. She turned up at a house in the Torrox/Cรณmpeta campo some weeks ago and was fortunate enough to be fostered by the occupants who were happy to feed her and keep her warm until we could find a permanent home for her. Sadly, her foster carers can no longer look after her and Pixie is still looking for her permanent home, or someone who can foster her. She's a sweet little dog and is healthy, happy and playful. If you can offer Pixie a new home or could foster her for a while, please contact us on the number below.

WHEN AND WHERE IS SPANISH CARNIVAL Carnival 2015 February 17, 2015

losely linked to the religious observance of privations prior to the start of Easter, Spanish carnival, with all its debauchery and excesses, usually kicks into high gear sometime in February, the week immediately before the beginning of the 40 days of Lent. Like all celebrations connected to Easter, the dates vary from year to year, although you can be fairly sure that carnival will take place at some point during February or early March. Given the enormous influence of the Catholic church in Spain, the celebration of carnival, ultimately an important part of the religious calendar, is widespread throughout the country. Nevertheless, the arrangements found in Cádiz and Tenerife are no doubt in a class of their own. Carnival Traditions Originally conceived as the final day of permissiveness before the start of the long period of penance and privations that lead up to the commemoration of the death of Christ in the form of the Holy Week and, specifically, Easter, carnival soon evolved from a feast oriented towards the consumption of "forbidden" goods (such as meat and sweets) to a full fledged celebration of all things carnal (i.e., the realm of this, rather than

Catholics in Italy began a tradition of holding a costume festival just before the commencement of Lent. Since Catholics aren't supposed to eat meat during those 40 days and 40 nights prior to Easter, they called this festival "carnevale," which roughly means "to put away the meat." The infamous Fat Tuesday began because Catholics had to use up all of the meat and butter before the following day, Ash Wednesday, which by its very name seemed to have often resulted in quite the day of consumption. In Tenerife, where the celebrations resemble those of Brazil, the huge elaborate costumes and massive use of brilliantly-colored feathers has its origins in African culture. It's no surprise, as the Canary Islands are actually closer to Africa than to Spain.

s the years pass and running, swimming. cycling. gym workout and even brisk long walks start to fall away and many folk realise they are now beyond middle age somewhat inactive and risking incapacity and infirmity. Stiffness Weakness and Aching Joints are not the result of aging but probably, of inadequate or even careless regard for our bodies. As we age stretching becomes ever more relevant and important. When muscle is stretched regularly, it develops the ability to stretch more, and the affiliated joints increase their range of motion. Being flexibile mean we are less likely to stumble and fall, and should this happen we will be more likely to catch ourselves before severe damage is done. When we sideways and upwards swing our arms, shrug to soften our shoulders we not only realise how rarely we do this but we

might just remember that the body is absolutely made to move; fed with blood, whatever our age, our bones and muscles are able to build and strengthen. Cold fingers? How rigid are our shoulders? Those stiff muscles are restricting blood flow! Stretching muscle pulls and evens out any fibres that are not organised and how much more efficiently things behave; encouraging blood flow which heals and develops our muscles, tendons, ligaments, organs and bones Stretching has a quantum effect upon the system; stretching a tendon just a fraction of inch more allows a remarkable increase of movement in the arms legs and back We add years of healthy living by stretching every day. Tai Chi, Qigon, pilates and yoga all are excellent disciplines that teach stretching however daily stretching at home is simple. Start with the fingers; flicking them open, stretching and squeezing the hands open and closed, shaking
the wrists, then swinging the arms, turning the waist and the hips from right to left, bending backwards then forwards. Now we have got moving we can think about what and how to stretch; can we touch our toes? if we can only just about reach below the knees no worries.. if we stretch downwards twice every day, not forcing but just stretching that tiny bit more and holding it for a few seconds as we breathe in and out, we will be toe touching within 6 weeks. Don't hold your breath when you stretch, long, slow breathing encourages your body to relax, A stretch can last just 2 seconds and be repeated a dozen times or it can be a long slow continuous reach. Regardless of our age and our state of health it is never too late to improve our mobility, and if we are moving we are getting ever more happy and healthy.

he biggest technology flops of all time. First up is Apple's earliest foray into mobile computing. NEWTON PDA Long before the iPhone or the iPad were on the scene, in the late 80s, Apple launched the Newton PDA. In total the project cost Apple $100m but this was never rewarded with strong sales. In the end the project was cut, to be revived in spirit - if not hardware or software - when the iPhone and iPad emerged many years later. DREAMCAST Sega's Dreamcast was released in Europe in 1999, ahead of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox that it was going head-to-head with. But the might of Sony's marketing machine meant that it never made much headway. Even several price cuts didn't help. It was eventually cancelled and Sega has never made another console to this day. SEGWAY Prior to the launch of the Segway all that the public knew was the codename, Ginger, and that Steve Jobs thought it was "as big a deal as the PC". When a selfbalancing, two-wheeled vehicle was released it was met with curious interest, until people realised how expensive they

were. Regulatory issues proved to be another nail in the coffin. In the UK they're unlawful to use anywhere except private property: you can't take them on the pavements or the roads. Today they're used for sightseeing tours and little else. SINCLAIR C5 Long before the Segway came the Sinclair C5, designed as a revolutionary new vehicle for a congested island. However, it's low top speed, short range, lack of weather protection and low height which proved intimidating in traffic, meant that it was received rather poorly when it launched in 1985. BETAMX Some flops flop because they're inferior, others are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Betamax was supposed to usher in a new era of home cinema in the late 1970s. Sony had managed to convince the world that its Betamax offered better quality than rivals such as VHS, thanks to a huge marketing budget, but VHS was far cheaper. The rest is history. APPLE MAPS Apple developed its own map service to rival Google Maps, and tightly bound it into iOS. If you click on an address on your iPhone it's now Apple Maps which opens up. But it was plagued with
WINDOWS VISTA Vista was Microsoft's attempt to give Windows a total facelift. It wasn't received well. PC World rated it as the biggest disappointment of 2007. In the end, MP3s won the day and DataPlay devices are little more than a footnote in music history. GIZMONDO This UK-based company was set up to rival Nintendo's DS and Sony's PSP. It appeared as a concept at CES in 2004 but only sold 25,000 units before the company folded in 2006. The collapse came amid revelations that one of the company's employees, Stefan Ericksson, who earned ÂŁ1.1m in 2004, had a criminal past. In 2006 he crashed a Ferrari Enzo in California at over 100mph, splitting the vehicle in two. It was later discovered that the car had been leased in the UK, but payments on it had ceased and it had been illegally transported to the US.

SPANISH INVENTIONS? 11 Spanish Inventions or were they?
S
pain has given a lot to the world over the centuries through its people's inventiveness. Obvious examples are flamenco, paella, tapas, and sangria. Some would herald the country, others would condemn it, for inventing bullfighting. But Spain has also invented many other less obvious items... or at least it claims to.

Because not only are the Spanish inventive with their hands, they can also be inventive with their words too (not that the Spanish are unique here - anyone involved in myth-making will bend the truth somewhat). Whether all of these inventions really came from Spain or not is debatable. Decide for yourselves which of these famous things really were Spanish inventions.
Likely? There is plenty of photographic evidence for a Spanish drink from this period called Nuez de Kola Coca. However, precisely which came first is debatable, especially as copyright and patent laws were fuzzier then than they are today..
1. Coca-Cola Let's start with the big one. That's right, it is claimed that the world's favorite soft drink was invented in Spain. Though the official line is that Coca-Cola was invented by a

JuanJo Mica claims that his greatgreat uncle invented the drink, at the time called Nuez de Kola Coca, in 1884 and took it to the United States, where it won a prize at a fair in Philadelphia. He then apparently sold the recipe to the Americans.
2. Chess Again the Valencians make a bold claim - that they invented the game of chess! The rumour resurfaced during a recent Kasparov match that took place in the city. But with so many learned intellectuals interested in chess, is it a bad move to make such a grand claim?
Likely? This article, Valencia and the Origins of Modern Chess, doesn't make the claim that the game was originally thought up in Spain, but it does say that radical rule changes took place in the 15th century, and that "all contemporary sources point towards Spain". So it seems this one is true. 3. Christopher Columbus's Discovery of the New World Parts of this are in no doubt - it was indeed the Spanish King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella that financed Columbus's voyage to the New World. However, many in Spain go further and claim that Columbus himself was born in Spain. Both Wikipedia and the Britannica encyclopedias say the explorer was born in Genoa in presentday Italy. However, many Catalans (the inhabitants of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands) claim that he came from their part of Spain, many specifically saying he was born on Ibiza. One article, Christopher Columbus, was he Catalan?,

says his coat of arms was Catalan. Likely? It is ironic that though we all know where Columbus went, no-one seems sure where he came from! The pride associated with claiming where Columbus comes from means it is unlikely many can be objective about his birthplace. But it seems likely to me that such a wandering spirit would have had similar nomadic parents - so even if he was born in Genoa, his family may well have been from Ibiza. 4. Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle The start to every Disney movie begins with the famous Sleeping Beauty castle - and the citizens of Segovia swear the castle was based on one in their city. Likely? They both have the turrets, and the turrets are the same colour. But Germany has countless more similar castles, with the Neuschwanstein castle the most likely model for the Disney icon. Sorry, Segovia, it looks like you're mistaken. 5. Sherry Sherry is a drink associated with every British grandmother, and many popular brands have British names, such as Harveys. A popular type of sherry is even called "Bristol Cream", but who ever heard of a Spanish town called Bristol? So why do the Spanish say sherry is Spanish? Likely? Hundred per cent true. Sherry comes from the Spanish town of Jerez, near Cadiz, in Andalusia. The English pronunciation comes from the Arabic name for the town, Sherish. So why the English names for so many of the brands? This comes from the strong British presence in the area. The ports here were important for trade with Britain, as well as for political reasons - the Protestant Huguenots fled here from France, where they were

helped by the English. 6. Fish and Chips Fish and chips?! Could this one be true? Could the most famous dish in the UK come from Spain? Many foolishly claim the only dish to come from the UK is fish and chips - so how could it come from Spain? Likely? As mentioned above, the British had strong connections with the south-west of Spain. Andalusia is famous for its freidurias, fried fish shops, and the best ones can be found in Cadiz. 7. The Acoustic Guitar Probably the most famous of the rumored Spanish inventions on this page (many refer to the acoustic guitar as the "Spanish guitar"). But is it true? Likely? This isn't disputed. As with chess, the guitar wasn't invented, it evolved. But most attribute the modern acoustic guitar to a Spaniard, Antonio Torres Jurado. 8. The Beret The beret is usually associated with a garlic smelling Frenchman who carries a baguette and wears a string of onions around his neck. But is this stereotype appropriate? Or can the Spanish have this one? Ilikely? In fact, no-one disputes the fact that the beret is Basque. But the Basque Country straddles Spain and France, with Pyrenean shepherds usually credited with starting the fashion. When you're herding sheep up a bitterly cold mountain, it is likely you'll have more important things on your mind than whether you're in France or Spain (especially as the locals claim that they are neither they're just Basque) so maybe we should similarly give up on such needless distinctions. Let's give this one to both France and Spain.
9. The Mop The mop? Yes, apparently the mop is a Spanish invention. It is said that the Spaniard Emilio Bellvis thought up the present-day mop-and-bucket combination. Likely? no idea! 10. Table Football If you speak English over a table football in Spain, some local with a strong patriotic spirit will stumble over to you and tell you that the game is Spanish. But many in the English world assume it to be German - after all, many call it foosball, from the German Fußball. Likely? For a start,t is not called Fußball in Germany, this is the name for soccer, or football, in general. The formal name is Tischfußball ("Table football") or, more commonly, "Kicker". The first patent for table football does belong to a Spaniard, Alejandro Finisterre, though he credits his friend, Francisco Javier Altuna, with the invention. However, it seems that here the Spanish jumped the gun a little on the patent front - most attribute the invention of the game to either a Briton, Evan Dube, or French Citroen worker Lucien Rosengart. 11. The Submarine Likely? The first submarine was human-propelled, and was invented during the American Civil War, with help from the French, not the Spanish. The first nonhuman propelled submarine was also invented by the French. The submarine was called the Plongeur. So where do the Spanish come in? Apparently, they invented the first combustion-powered submarine (the Ictineo II, converted to steam-propulsion in 1867). They were also behind the Peral submarine, the first all electric submarine.

smuggler has been detained in China with 94 iPhone handsets taped to his body. The man's unusual posture as he walked caught the attention of customs officers in the city of Shenzhen as he tried to cross into China from Hong Kong China's state media reported. Reports indicate he looked as though he was weighed down with something

Images released by Chinese officials revealed he had taped the unboxed phones to his body and legs. The stash contained iPhone 6, 6+ and the older iPhone 5 handsets. iPhones are, on average, ÂŁ80 cheaper in Hong Kong than they are in mainland China. High demand from Chinese consumers contributes to smuggling. Ironically, all iPhones are made in factories on the Chinese mainland, including one plant near the port where the seizure was made. The border between Hong Kong and mainland China is a notorious smuggling route. Electrical and luxury goods are often cheaper in Hong Kong than on the mainland.

THE GHOST ISLAND OF SAN BORONDÓN A Legend
T
During the 15th-century Spanish conquest of the Canary Islands, an aboriginal folklore story from the islands (rooted in Celtic legend), spoke about an 8th island that was sometimes seen to the west of La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera. Many sailors chronicled how, in attempts to reach its shores, natural phenomenon like thick mists, winds or storms would impede clear views or access to the island, which would vanish just as fast.

People firmly believed in its existence, and there were even detailed accounts from sailors who swore to have landed on the island and explored it before the land would sink back into the ocean or “move”. A surviving document of this tale is the 11th century Navigatio Brendani. International treaties signed by the Kingdom of Castile concerning the conquests of the Canary Islands stated that Castile had sovereignty over “the islands of Canarias, already discovered or to be discovered...”, and eighteenth century archives list the official inquiries performed by the authorities of the island of El Hierro after thousands of witnesses declared having seen the bewitched island from the summits of their mountains. An expedition set out from the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in search of the island proved fruitless. The legend today… Even though fewer sightings have been reported since the XIX century, the persistence of this legend in the Canary Islands' folklore is still strong to this day. San Borondon remains alive in the islanders' imagination and there is probably not one local of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, Gran Canaria or El Hierro who has not glanced from the mountain-top of the island into the sea, hoping to glimpse the lost island in the western horizon where the sun sinks into the cobalt-blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. "Let the Guanche drums resound and the conch shells blow, for the mysterious island is appearing in the midst of the waves; here comes San Borondón, showing up in the mist like a queen with the surf as suite...” -- “San Borondón”,

Usually eaten as an appetizer – and sometimes straight from a bowl or glass – its thickness is derived from blending a whole heap of fresh tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers, garlic, onions, vinegar, and herbs. Salmorejo is a similar Andalucian version combining pureed bread, tomatoes, garlic, and vinegar – also served cold – and sometimes varied with a bit of ham or egg.. 4. Pisto – Spanish ratatouille This vegetarian option is enjoyed by all, as a tapa, starter, a side dish to meats, or even with a fried egg on top. Besides the usual Spanish tapas, for example olives, cured meates, Manchego cheese or a plate of Spanish bravas (fried potato with spicy tomato sauce), here are 10 foods you should have in Spain. 1. Croquettes You can find a plate of croquetas in almost any restaurant or bar, each made to the establishment's own recipe. It makes food comparison throughout Spain a delight, and not at all a bad idea for judging up a restaurant's quality. While the creamy cheese croquettes pack a smooth flavour,

try croquettes filled with a mixture of béchamel and Spanish cured ham , or the local sweet-spiced black sausage for something stronger. 2. Tortilla Espaniola A great starter or meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Like croquetas, you can find them in almost any bar with varying degrees of quality and flavour. The best ones are from slow-cooked potato in olive oil, which make a soft centre once egg is added to create an omelette cake; even tastier when onions are added to the slow-frying process for a sweet underlying flavour. You'll also find wedges of Spanish omelette squeezed between a bocadilla for a tasty sandwich snack. 3. Gazpacho or salmorejo This cold tomato soup has claimed space in many supermarkets around the world, but carton gazpacho compares little to the Spanish tangy, refreshing variety.
5. Cured meats – jamon, chorizo, salchichón Jamon is a serious business and an art in Spain, with many varietals that determine quality, such as what the pigs are fed and the curing process. Jamón ibérico de bellota is the top category, where the pigs are free-range and acorn-fed. Chorizo is identified by its red smoked-pepper colouring, and is a dried sausage with sweet and spicy hints. You'll also see the softer-flavoured salchichón served on mixed charcuterie platters. 6. Pulpo a la gallega This octopus dish is macerated with paprika (pimenton), crusty rock salt and a drizzle of olive oil. It's a signature Galician dish, and you'll find it on the menu in many Galician restaurants around Spain. It's usually served with a potato or two, on top of a wooden platter. 7. Bean stew Spain is home to a wide variety of interesting beans and

University educated with a Bachelors Degree, many of our readers may already know her through her work at Árchez Townhall. She worked there for 9 years as a Technical Officer for the Junta de Andalucía. She speaks to us about her hopes and aspirations for 2015. Mari Carmen, why did you decide to stand for Mayoress of Árchez? This was an important step for me and I simply want to make Árchez a town with a future and better for all who live there. A great place for tourists to visit, employment opportunities and activities for children and adults, help for the neediest families and better services to those who live here. I want to promote the culture, local businesses and engage with the foreign population. Every year I see less children going to our school, the youth migrating to other countries or towns where there are more job opportunities. Families moving to other municipalities where there are better prospects and opportunities for housing. When Princess Isabella of Castile was married to Ferdinand of Aragon in 1469, the Spanish empire started to flourish. A few years later they financed the voyage of explorer Christopher Columbus to America. Just two years after that voyage, all the lands in what was referred to as the New World were claimed by Spain. Christopher Columbus is one of the most famous of Spanish voyagers. He was born in Genoa, Italy but his explorations were all in the name of Spain. The other notable Spanish explorers are Amerigo Vespucci, Juan Ponce de Leon and Vasco Nuñez de Balboa.
Amerigo Vespucci Amerigo Vespucci was also born Italian but he had himself naturalized as a Spaniard. His first voyage was on May 10, 1497 where a month later he reached the Guiana mainland. The name America was coined after his name. With regard to Juan Ponce de León, his fame was set being the explorer who went looking for the fountain of youth. He was also notable for being the first European to set foot in Florida. Vasco Nuñez de Balboa on the other hand, is an explorer who was famous for being the first European to actually see the Pacific Ocean from the eastern shore in 1513. I guess looking back we can say that not all aspects of the conquest were detrimental to our communities. Should you wish to donate more that would be fantastic and Sugar and Spice would make up baskets of eggs/sweets to make them an extra special prize. Each child will then pay a nominal entrance fee per egg, which again is donated to Caritas. We will have 120 numbered fake eggs, all prettily decorated, which are then planted around the Hotel Balcon's garden areas and each child must find a fake egg to exchange for the real thing. They will not know before they hunt what their prize will be as we hide the corresponding real egg numbers from sight.

For those of you who heard about it last year or experienced it we truly hope that you will be as generous this year as you were last. The children were so excited and thrilled with their prizes. The idea is that we (CAMPO) ask you to sponsor an egg for the children of Competa. We are doing it slightly differently this year as we have the time to organise the eggs with Sugar and Spice. We have asked them to order us 120 (yes 120) medium sized eggs and we will ask if you can donate 10 euros for each egg. You can do it individually or in a group – up to you. This will pay for the egg and whatever remains will be donated to Caritas, Competa.
We raised just over 1350 euros and after expenses have donated 700 euros to charity, split 330 to Action for Animals and 370 to AECC Malaga (cancer research). Our thanks to the John Dunford photo booth, raising 65.18, Liz Bland for doing such a great job on the Tombola, netting 278.22 and to Sue Edwards for charging guests 50c each to sign her leg plaster cast, this added 36.32 to the AECC funds and of course those who bought tickets.

WALK FOR LIFE 10th ANNIVERSARY Sunday, 26th April, 2015

ome along and celebrate our 10th annual WALK FOR LIFE by joining us on Sunday, 26th April, 2015. It doesn't seem possible that it's ten years ago that the idea first started after talking to friends who had also lost family and friends to cancer. A couple of us were planning to fly back to the UK to participate in “Race for Life” in aid of Cancer Research UK but decided we preferred to do a local fundraising event here in Spain. “Race for Life” started in 1994 with just one race in Battersea Park, London. It is now one of the UK's largest fundraising events and this year there are over three hundred events across the UK. During the last twenty years, over six and half million people have participated and raised over £540 million.

Although my Competa “Walk for Life” is not on the scale of “Race for Life” – we have grown year on year starting with 12 to over 60 walkers in 2013, having raised almost 30,000 euros for Cudeca Cancer Care. Cudeca Cancer Care is a charitable organisation that provides palliative care to the terminally ill cancer sufferers within the province of Malaga. It is made up of a team of specialist doctors and nurses who provide care and attention to those who need it with support to the family during treatment and after the loss of a loved one. The care is completely free of charge for all their services; the in-patient Hospice and Day Care Centre in Benalmadena or the home visits within the province of Malaga. Cudeca receives very little public funding, instead they depend entirely on initiatives for raising money to ensure they can continue to provide the “special
kind of caring” to those who need specialist palliative care. There is no charge to join our 5km walk around the village of Competa starting from the Mirador, so please come and join us. I just ask, please that you raise as much sponsorship money as possible. Day for Life activities will follow Walk for Life, please see next months Grapevine for full details. ST. VALENTINE, THE REAL STORY By David Kithcart

lowers, candy, red hearts and romance. That's what Valentine's day is all about, right? Well, maybe not. The origin of this holiday for the expression of love really isn't romantic at all -- at least not in the traditional sense. Father Frank O' Gara of Whitefriars Street Church in Dublin, Ireland, tells the real story of the man behind the holiday -- St. Valentine. "He was a Roman Priest at a time when there was an emperor called Claudias who persecuted the church at that particular time," Father O' Gara explains. " He also had an edict that prohibited the marriage of young people. This was based on the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than married soldiers because married soldiers might be afraid of what might happen to them or their wives or families if they died." "I think we must bear in mind that it was a very permissive society in which Valentine lived," says Father O'Gara. "Polygamy would have been much more popular than just one woman and one man living together. And yet some of them seemed to be attracted to Christian faith. But obviously the church thought that marriage was very sacred

between one man and one woman for their life and that it was to be encouraged. And so it immediately presented the problem to the Christian church of what to do about this." "The idea of encouraging them to marry within the Christian church was what Valentine was about. And he secretly married them because of the edict." Valentine was eventually caught, imprisoned and tortured for performing marriage ceremonies against command of Emperor Claudius the second. There are legends surrounding Valentine's actions while in prison. "One of the men who was to judge him in line with the Roman law at the time was a man called Asterius, whose daughter was blind. He was supposed to have prayed with and healed the young girl with such astonishing effect that Asterius himself became Christian as a result." In the year 269 AD, Valentine was sentenced to a three part execution of a beating, stoning, and finally decapitation all because of his stand for Christian marriage. The story goes that the last words he wrote were in a note to Asterius'
Valentine's martyrdom has not gone unnoticed by the general public. In fact, Whitefriars Street Church is one of three churches that claim to house the remains of Valentine. Today, many people make the pilgrimage to the church to honour the courage and memory of this Christian saint. "Valentine has come to be known as the patron saint of lovers. Before you enter into a Christian marriage you want some sense of God in your life -- some great need of God in your life. And we know, particularly in the modern world, many people are meeting God through his Son, Jesus Christ." "If Valentine were here today, he would say to married couples that there comes a time where you're going to have to suffer. It's not going to be easy to maintain your commitment and your vows in marriage. Don't be surprised if the 'gushing' love that you have for someone changes to something less "gushing" but maybe much more mature. And the question is, is that young person ready for that?" "So on the day of the marriage they have to take that into context," Father O' Gara says. "Love -- human love and sexuality is wonderful, and blessed by God -- but also the shadow of the cross. That's what Valentine means to me."

WHAT IS A PARADOR? Travel
P
aradors are the state-run hotels that can be found throughout Spain; to visit Spain and overlook a stay at a parador is to miss out on a major portion of the country's lore and historical heritage. How much does it cost to stay at a Parador in Spain? When judged against comparable lodgings, the rates and programs are quite reasonable. In 2008, expect a range from 97€ to 159€ per standard room or more for exceptional lodgings. What kinds of buildings do they turn into Paradors? Many are lovingly restored medieval castles, Arab fortresses, palaces, monasteries and convents, while the remainder were built with an architectural style that complements the locale. Paradors are found throughout mainland Spain and on the Canary Islands. And they're hardly a new thing: the Parador de Gredos near Avila was inaugurated in 1928 (by King Alfonso XIII). What sort of facilities can I expect at a parador in Spain? Regardless of the parador's age or style, all are outfitted with modern amenities, although not all accommodate high-tech travellers (ask about wireless before reserving) or those with special needs. There are issues in historical paradors where it's not feasible to destroy an old staircase to install an elevator. And except for original and often exquisite furnishings, amenities

are supplied by a central Parador outlet. The conformity is easy to overlook especially when you know the bath towel will wrap around twice wherever you stay. An interesting Parador factoid is the manufacture of its soap, which requires its own factory. Topped off with traditional cuisine, local and national wines and special gastronomic events served in elegant dining rooms, it's no wonder that half of the network’s profit is derived from the restaurants. A parador culinary school in Leon trains the majority of chefs where many ancient and local recipes are modernized for today’s table, not to mention producing experts such as the fish chef and the chocolate chef. And menus can cater to diabetics, vegetarians, gluten-intolerant guests and include children’s favourites. TOP 10 PARADORS 1. Parador de Siguenza (Guadalajara) A former castle perched on a hill that was once fortified by the Moors in 712 and was the residence of bishops and cardinals until the end of the last century. 2. Parador de Santiago de Compostela (Galicia) Believed to be the oldest hotel in the world and faces a wide square. It was a former refuge and final point for the pilgrims who completed their arduous trek to the birth of St. James. 3. Parador de La Granja (Segovia)
A part of the Royal Summer Residence and built for King Carlos III in the 18th century. Menu highlights are La Granja’s large white beans and local trout. 4. Parador de Leon (Leon) The former Monastery of San Marcos and built in the 16th Century to lodge pilgrims making their trek to Santiago de Compostela. There’s a coffered ceiling, church, sacristy, a cloister and choir stalls within the parador. 5. Parador de Ronda (Malaga) Located beside El Tajo a gorge of renown, and has an outdoor swimming pool. Restaurant favorites are white garlic soup and almond cheese. 6. Parador de Granada (Granada) A 15th-century convent that has fountains, large windows and a Moorish ambiance accented with gardens. 7. Parador de Trujillo (Cáceres) Located in the birthplace of the discoverers. The parador is a 16th century convent with a lovely cloister. Iberian ham from the region is a restaurant specialty. 8. Parador de Santo Estevo (Ourense) A former Benedictine monastery situated where the Miño and Sil Rivers meet. Vineyards are along the rivers and the parador has a complimentary boat ride for scenic excursions to the surrounding monasteries and countryside. 9. Parador de Bielsa (Huesca) One of only two paradores inside a national park. This one rests at the foot of Mt. Perdido in a nature preserve in the Pyrenees. Aragonese-style fried breadcrumbs is on the menu. 10. Parador de Baiona (Pontevedra) A modern parador (built in 1966) but it’s situated inside an older fortress. The sea surrounds the area on three sides. The sunsets are spectacular, too.

TOP 10: MUST-KNOW SPANISH SUPERSTITIONS

id you know that Tuesday the 13th is considered unlucky in Spain, and not Friday the 13th as in Anglo-Saxon countries? That's because Tuesday is said to be dominated by Ares, the Greek god of war, who gives his name to Martes, or Tuesday, in Spanish. There is an even old proverb that explains the superstition: "On Tuesday, don’t get married, embark on a journey, or move away ('En martes, ni te cases, ni te embarques, ni de tu casa te apartes') But there are plenty of other Spanish superstitions you need to know about to make sure your time in Spain is as lucky as possible! Read on to find out more. HATS ON HEADS NOT BEDS: In Spain, putting a hat on a bed will bring bad luck. This could stem from the time when people believed that evil spirits lived in your hair, so, they could easily be transferred from hair to hat to bed, resulting in evil spirits getting you in the night. Might be best to keep that hat on the hat stand, just in case. THE POINTY END: Don't buy family or friends knives or

scissors as a gift. Tradition says that this means that the relationship will be broken. So think again about that set of knives you bought as a wedding present! BREAK A LEG: What is it with wishing harm on people as a sign of good luck? The theatre has always been rife with superstitions and while in many countries "break a leg" is the standard way to wish good luck, in Spain you've got to wish that person "mucha mierda" or "loads of shit". CACTUS MYSTERY: Ever wondered why there are so many cactuses on window sills in Spain? That's because it is widely believed in Spain that a cactus can ward away evil. SEVEN LIVES: While most countries have a superstition about cats having multiple lives because of their suppleness and savvy at getting out of difficult situations, poor Iberian kitty’s have two fewer lives than their English counterparts, or just seven. SWEPT OFF YOUR FEET: If you accidentally brush the feet of a single woman while sweeping, it means she’ll never get married. The superstition is related to witches.
DON'T BUY YELLOW CLOTHES AS A GIFT: This comes from the idea that yellow represents sulphur and the Devil, The colour yellow is also said to bring bad luck in certain situations, so don't wear yellow on the day of an exam, a job interview or when you are starring in a play. LUCKY NEW YEAR! Spaniards traditionally eat 12 grapes on the 12 strokes of midnight on New Year’s Eve. For even more luck and prosperity for the year ahead, wearing red underwear on the last night of the year will also help. BEST FOOT FORWARD: Misfortune, it is said, enters a room with its left foot. If you do happen to enter a room with your left foot, then don't worry. Just make sure to make the sign of the cross three times to counter the bad luck! PURSE PROBLEMS: Always make sure there is an extra chair at your table in Spain: for your handbag. Spaniards believe that leaving your handbag on the floor will result in you losing all your money.

SPAIN AMONG EUROPE'S CHEAPEST NATIONS A study By Numbeo
S
pain is one of the cheapest places to live in Western Europe and is 35 percent cheaper than New York according to new figures. A new cost of living index produced by Numbeo reveals life in Spain is a third cheaper than in the Big Apple. The index determined the difference in living costs between countries taking into account the prices of groceries, transportation, restaurants and utilities. According to Numbeo, Spain has a rent index of 21.53 which means renting in the country come in at a fifth of the price of New York and puts Spanish rents roughly on par with those in China and Trinidad and Tobago. Spain's cheap rents have even prompted some Londoners to consider commuting to the UK
capital from Spain. Spain’s overall Restaurant Price Index is 71.09, making it 30 percent cheaper to eat out in Spain than in New York. It costs around the same amount to eat out in Mozambique and Russia as it does in Spain. The Consumer Price Index in Spain (65.70) is on par with Zimbabwe (65.89) and Slovenia (65.15). Obviously there are significant regional differences within Spain. In Madrid, for example, rents are 70 percent cheaper than in New York while local purchasing power is at 76.27. Compare this to Barcelona, where rents are almost 75 percent cheaper than in New York. While Barcelona does have cheaper rents than Madrid, local purchasing power is very similar, at 76.14.
If you are after a good deal in Spain, it might be best to head to the south of the country: rents in Malaga are 82 percent cheaper than in New York while local purchasing power is actually higher than that of Barcelona, at 76.25, in other words, your euro will stretch much further in the south of Spain. Renting a one bedroom apartment in the centre of Malaga will set you back around €440 a month, whereas for the same kind of flat in Madrid, you would be looking at spending around €730. Switzerland tops the list of the most expensive countries. It is 26 percent more expensive than New York and is the most expensive place to buy groceries in the world. The top three is rounded off by two oil-rich nations: Norway, in second place and Venezuela in third.

or lazy gardeners – and who isn´t at times - there are very few plants more effective than daisies – they´re tough, easy to grow and give fantastic flower power and value for many. The compositae/asteraceae family is one of the largest and ´core´families of botanics with some 25,000 species. It is characterised by the annual daisy, bellis perennis – that common ´weed´ of our lawns. It originated in Europe but is now found in most of the world. The true flower is actually the yellow centre which is surrounded by ligules more recognisable to us as petals. At the other end of the family scale is the sunflower, our most giant daisy. Tucked somewhere into the family tree is a little daisy which is one of my favourites. It is unassuming and can often pass by unnoticed but it´s a great little worker. So let me introduce you to erigeron

karvinskianus. The erigeron is more commonly known as Mexican fleabane, not a very prepossessing name for such a little charmer. As you might guess it hails from Mexico but is such an opportunist that it is now found in almost every corner of our planet. The little white and pink daisies cling to rocky cliffs, mountainsides, stone walls and happily wander between cracks in paving. Any nook and cranny becomes home; its only criteria are sun and good drainage. Sounds good, don´t you think? Now I know many people who have given up on this little beauty because they cannot get it to establish – and I know why! When you see it creeping all over the place so prolifically, the temptation is to tweak out a rooted slip and carefully replant it in your garden. And it fails every time! The only way you are going to have this plant is to buy a rooted plant or grow it from seed.
In common with many rock dwellers, erigeron karvinskianus has strong wiry tap roots that pierce between cracks in rocks, ensuring it is well fixed and can source water and nutrients. The roots mould themselves to the rock so it is extremely unlikely that you will have success in reestablishing. However, a plant will produce hundreds of seeds and it will very quickly soften all your walls and paving. If you really need to help it along, make a thick sludge of garden soil and seed and press this into the chinks between stones – end of summer/early autumn is a good time. Usually it germinates well and soon you will have a daisy wall with more daisy than wall! Once established, these daisies will flower from March/April through to cold weather. Trim them over occasionally to prolong flowering but leave the last flush to set seed. The

charming little flowers fade from white to pink as they age. Very cold or windy conditions can knock them about a bit, but just trim them over and they´ll soon be looking fresh again. Another ´daisy´with real appeal is the mountain daisy, arenaria montana – not a true daisy but as fresh as! It´s a very classy looking plant with fresh, glossy, green foliage and sparkling white flowers, quite large for the plant size. It is a native of mountainous areas in southern Europe so, again, a perfect plant for our gardens. It will grow in situations similar to the erigeron, though happier with perhaps a little shade in very hot areas and a little more moisture, though they become more drought tolerant with age. It´s an alpine, truly, but is lovely for edging pathways or for cracks between paving and looks like a sparkling waterfall when tumbling over rocks. Try it, too, as groundcover under spring

flowering bulbs where it will form evergreen mats spreading to 0.5m across with a height of 10 cm. Hundreds of its lovely cup-shaped flowers will be produced during spring and early summer. Trim lightly after flowering; for the rest of the year it makes dense green cushions. The plants can be lifted and divided during very early spring. And, in future years, with your daisies well-established, you can pluck petals to play “(s)he loves me, (s)he loves me not!” – especially for Valentine´s! U3A AXARQUIA GETS OFF TO A FLYING NEW YEAR Following a year in which U3A grew in size, both in terms of its membership numbers & the addition of several new Groups, 2015 promises to be a bumper year for the organisation that started from small beginnings in 2009. The Association now has 23 Groups from Wild Side Walking for the very fit & able to Meditation & Relaxation to those who enjoy something not quite so strenuous. By the end of 2014, the membership of the organisation had grown to 196, and already there has been a flurry of interest and new members joining in 2015. Over the last year, U3A has spread its wings, moving further inland from its traditional coastal base in & around El Morche, and now has thriving Groups in Competa & Canillas de Albaida, as well as further along the coast in Torre del Mar & Benerafe. Some of the Groups have opened up a more public face to their activities, most notably, the Photography group, who began a successful relationship with Taperias La Jarta in Torre del Mar, before, the Taperias was forced to close toward the end of 2014, due to lack of business. There are however, plans afoot to launch a new exhibition in association with Las Perlas Gastrobar in Torre del Mar, and this is expected to come 'on-stream' in the early part of

HOLIDAYS IN ANDALUCIA Sales of holiday packages to Andalucia for the summer are already between 12 and 14 per cent higher than the same period last year. Britons are leading the way in the region with a 17 per cent rise in packages booked by tour operators. Last year visitors from the UK – 2.2 million of them – accounted for 35 per cent of the international tourism market in Andalucia. The president of the Tourism Council of the Andalucian Confederation of Business Owners (CEA), Miguel Sanchez, said that it was a good indicator that foreign tour operators see Andalucia as good value when it came to price and quality. He added that the numbers confirmed the positive outlook that had been reported by delegates at the World Travel market in London. He went on to say that these initial figures did not include online bookings, as these tend to made later in the year.

PENAL CODE CRACKS DOWN ON ABUSE Anyone convicted of ill-treating animals could be banned from keeping pets or livestock of any kind for up to three years. An amendment to Spain’s Penal Code has introduced stiffer penalties and broadened the range of animals protected. However, critics say it has not gone far enough. Until now, those found guilty of the neglect or abuse of animals could only be banned from trading or working with animals. Now, if the action put the life of an animal in danger, a total ban can be imposed. Those who abandon an animal in the street or in the wild can also face substantial fines. The number of species now protected by the law has been increased to include ferrets, iguanas, pigs, snakes and tarantulas which are in the care of a human. It also covers turtles and tortoises which are being abandoned in rivers and wetlands by their owners and which can then put native species in danger. Critics say the revised legislation is, “too little, too late,” as it fails to encompass cock and dog fighting which are already illegal but frequently slip through the net. They add it also excludes the illtreatment of animals, particularly bulls, during some local fiestas.
