Editors Note... Happy New Year to you all. I hope that all of you have had a great Christmas and that Santa brought you everything you wished for! For me, Christmas this year was one long celebration from the beginning of December. Starting with various birthday parties, followed by a pretend Christmas at home with visiting relatives in mid December. Then to finish things off lunch out on the big day itself. Now I am looking forward to staying in for a while in front of our nice warm fire.

This month the magazine includes our quarterly property feature. Reports from the UK show house prices are rising, this means people have more available equity and often look to purchase a second home. This could be a great time to market your property. Also, whilst house prices haven’t risen in Spain it is still a great time to buy. Turn to page 53 where you can see a selection of properties from local agents in the area.

NEWS IN SPAIN News from around the Country
A
round 6,000 people dressed as Santa Claus and his elves have run a "mini-marathon" through the streets of Madrid to promote festive cheer as the country tries to emerge from a two-year recession. While grown-ups dressed in red costumes with wispy white beards, children donned green elf outfits to run the 5.5-kilometre course through the city centre. The race was organized by one of Spain's leading department stores and it contributed 1€ for each entrant to a charity that buys Christmas presents for deprived children around the world. Javier Menendez, one of the runners, said he was surprised at the number of people who have donned their robes for the run.
A
plan to create a giant casino complex - called Eurovegas - near Madrid has collapsed after disagreements between the developer and Spanish authorities. US casino operator Las Vegas Sands has pulled out of the $30bn (£18bn) project which included six casinos, 12 hotels and many shops. Directly and indirectly the project was supposed to create up to 250,000 posts. That was an important selling point in Spain

where the jobless rate currently stands at 27%. However Spanish authorities would not agree to several demands from the US company. Las Vegas Sands wanted the government to insure it against future changes in policy which could damage the resort's profitability, as well as a lower tax on gambling. There was also a disagreement over smoking at the resort, with Las Vegas Sands asking for the resort to be exempted from Spanish rules on smoking.
A
book advising newly-wed women on how to be "submissive" has become a publishing phenomenon in Spain while outraging feminists who have called for it to be banned. The polemic book by married Italian author Costanza Miriano titled 'Cásate y sé sumisa – Get Married and Be Submissive – was published by the Catholic Arbishopric of the southern city of Granada in November and soared up the best seller list. The book, which was a best seller in Italy, preaches a message of "loyal obedience, generosity and submission" on the part of the new wife and offers nuggets of advice for the newly-wed on how to please one's husband. The book currently appears at
number 15 on the Amazon best seller list in Spain but has raised the hackles of modern-minded Senoras who even staged a public demonstration against the tome, where they tore up copies. Women's groups are considering legal action to get it banned arguing that it promotes gender violence. One passage suggests: "We [women] like humiliation because it is for a greater good.”
R
evised figures published by European Union statistics agency Eurostat reveal that Spain is going backwards in terms of the average income of its citizens compared to those of other member states. The new figures reveal that Spain's GDP per capita figures for 2012 are at 96 percent of the EU average, rather than the 97 percent included in advance figures released by Eurostat earlier this year. That puts Spain back on a level last seen in 1998, several years before the introduction of the euro. Spain hit its peak in terms of GDP per capita compared to other EU countries in 2007, when it exceeded the average by six percentage points. The economic crisis, however, from which Spain is yet to emerge, put paid to that prosperity.

THINK LOCAL, ACT LOCAL Reflect in the New Year
I
n a community of around 5000 people we are blessed with a wide range of businesses and services. This includes supermarkets, hairdressers, specialist gift and furniture shops a vast array of bars, a good range of restaurants, and great builders, electricians and other trades people. When we first came to Competa I was amazed that we were able to go into Portichuello, buy our white goods which were delivered and installed on the same day. Equally great is the service at TJ Autos, where I have gone in on occasions with a slight problem with the car and the guys just fix it there and then without charge. Name me a small community in the UK who can deliver that level of customer care! The range of choice we enjoy is down to the commitment of people who work hard to keep the business community going. Running a business in Spain can be hellishly bureaucratic and takes up a lot of time behind the scenes. Employment law is also very complex in Spain. Crucially, all of these businesses provide vital and much needed employment for local people in
tough times. We are also blessed with a wide range of people who make amazing things happen in our community on a totally voluntary basis, raising much needed funds to help support unmet needs within our community, including the unique services provided by Cuedeca. There are too many to name, but the sheer energy and talent within our community never ceases to amaze. For these reasons I am asking Grapevine readers to reflect in the New Year on why it makes sense to shop and buy locally whenever possible. Of course we all need a break from the village from time to time, but if we want our community to survive and thrive it is down to us as individuals to keep as much cash flowing within our own community. It is easy to enjoy the range of choices we have in the village, but imagine a different scenario, where we had no Q8 to buy our petrol locally; no Sugar and Spice, offering a wide range of favourites; only two or three bars to choose from; only one hairdresser or just one supermarket. We would be a poorer community on many levels,
and job opportunities would nosedive. Many of our local business are also active supporters of social causes, offering prizes for fund raising, sponsoring events and helping those in our community who struggle on low incomes. Todo Papel may be a newsagents plus, but look how often they transform themselves into a box office. The Grapevine, a valuable source of local communication for us all is always on hand to provide free copy to support local fund raising events. So business in our community is about much more than a balance sheet or profit and loss account. It is about active participation as citizens. I accept that things can be less costly on the coast on occasions, but also remember the cost of petrol involved plus the valuable time taken, whilst enlarging your green footprint! I am of course joking, but seriously, when thinking about using your purchasing power, do remember that many small communities in Europe have withered on the vine during recession. Thinking local, acting local and, wherever possible, spending local makes sense. Ray Rowden

Two days later we picked up the tiny bundles of fluff on the way home. I do find them fascinating. I have past experience of puppies and kittens at first hand, but have never hand-reared so have not paid so much attention to their habits and interaction with each other and with me. They already have strong personalities and are quite different from each other. They have been christened Bootsie (he has four white socks and a bib) and Eddie (he distinctly resembles a teddy bear but there are already several dogs hereabouts called Teddy)
ACTION FOR ANIMALS Maggie’s story
I
n December we found two little pups abandoned in the rubbish bins in Cómpeta. They are currently being fostered by Maggie Woodward until we can find them permanent homes. Here's Maggie's story of life as a fosterer...
wine too many. On returning home I checked in on emails and Facebook (as you do) …….and it just happened. It wouldn’t have happened without that extra glass of wine, but it did happen and I now have to take full responsibility for my actions.
I've sold myself a pup
I saw a Facebook appeal from Action for Animals pleading for a foster carer for two abandoned pups, currently 3 to 4 weeks old, which had been dumped in a rubbish bin in Cómpeta. I found my fingers typing a response………’I can do that’ and before I had a chance to back-peddle I had clicked the send button and got an instant reply thanking me for my generosity – and when could I collect them!
It’s enough to make you think about giving up drink. Just one too many and look at the result! You know how it goes…… That haze of good-will that envelops you with a warm and snuggly feeling (phase 1), before it starts to wear off and you consider whether it will be wise to take a paracetamol before going to bed (phase 2), and the feeling in the morning when you think perhaps you should have taken two paracetamol last night and the realisation of what you did during phase 1 (phase 3). It happened a week ago – I had been out with some new chums and had drunk only one glass of
32 The Grapevine
At this point in time I hadn’t discussed ‘my generosity’ with my partner David, who I knew would agree but wouldn’t be keen, and I certainly hadn’t discussed the situation with Roly and Sheba, our scruffy mutt and our princess pussy cat who both like things at home just the way they are.
The pups’ reception in our household has been predictable. David is tolerant but not overjoyed, Roly is really hacked off, won’t go anywhere near them, and immediately goes outside whenever they are out of their box, whilst Sheba treats them the disdain that all dogs deserve and pretty much ignores them. And I have been crawling around the floor like an over-active toddler with a roll of loo paper always at the ready. If you would like to offer these gorgeous boys a loving home (one or both) or know of anyone who might, please contact Nina, at Action for Animals on 660586040. Just make sure you are sober before you dial that number! Maggie's 'view of life' can be followed on her blog magwood.wordpress.com Action for Animals Charity Shop, Avenida de la Constitución 59, Cómpeta. He can provide Holistic Healing in 3 main ways, Andy explains . “Firstly, crystals, scientific research shows that everything in the universe is made up of vibrations, including animals, people, plants, houses and even cars. When a human beings' energies/vibrations are unbalanced this will cause disease, mental confusion and/or emotional turmoil. When crystals are placed with intention

in or around or in the body (the latter uses crystals left in water overnight , process of elixir) this brings the body's' energies/vibrations back into balance. This creates physical healing, clear thoughts and balanced emotions. Secondly, hands on healing. In a similar way laying on of hands re balances the body's energies. I use universal energy to clear, re balance and strengthen the chakras and energy lines of the body. The 7 main chakras of the body are worked on within these sessions. Thirdly, breathing, meditations and affirmations. As homework I teach a number of simple to intermediate meditations and breathing techniques to promote self healing. I also teach positive
affirmations which are intended to change negative thought patterns into positive ones". All these offerings provide holistic healing. Andy has read, researched and practiced for many years. He has studied extensively and has found great information and inspiration from Hands of Light by Barbara Ann Brennan, You Can Heal Your Life by Louise L Haye and The Science of Breath by Swami Rama, Rudolph Ballentine & Alan Hymes. Holistic Healing sessions can now be booked at e.g.o. from January onwards with an initial free consultation and 40€ per hour thereafter. For contact details see advert opposite. Happy New Year!

HEDGING IT! Campo cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh
H
edges are the backdrop that define our gardens and frame them and give us privacy and protection. They deserve more thought than digging a few holes and sticking something quick growing in there! Most gardens – even the smallest - can benefit from a hedge and remember they don't just have to be a long line or a quadrangle
40 The Grapevine
framing paving or lawn. Hedges can flow, curve and swoop; they can snake, bend and wobble or they can be symmetrical, squaredoff and formal. So don't hedge your mind in – let loose - there's sure to be a hedge to suit! Low hedges are great to define areas and border pathways; high hedges, of course, give great privacy and, much as high ceilings in a room impart elegance and
size, so too can a tall hedge in a garden. Don't be frightened of height; a large garden can almost certainly take it. Functionality is usually our first hedging thought; their beauty is rarely considered. Yet whilst they baffle wind better than much more expensive walls, often creating a distinct micro-climate, they also provide a perfect backdrop for our flowers or can be a flowering

wonder in their own right. Equally, they are great sanctuaries and food sources for our wildlife – and us too. We rarely think in terms of edible hedges but they come with hips, herbs, nuts, fruits and edible flowers. In terms of maintenance, they are relatively low demand, usually happy with a yearly pruning. Extremely quick growing varieties may need pruning twice a year. So, to practicalities. Planting Hedges: ·In our climate, hedg deciduous or evergreen, can be successfully planted from November through to end of March to take best advantage of all the winter rains. Spacing is vital and, obviously, depends on your selection and patience! As an average, I'd say plant between 0.5m and 1m apart but, if in doubt, do ask at your local garden centre. Although tempting, try not to plant too closely together, it'll only give you problems in later years. Soak your plants well before planting, especially if they are bare-rooted. Think about applying a mycorrhizal rooting powder. This greatly increases the spread of roots; thus they become much more independent in terms of water and feed Ideally, dig out a trench for your hedging. Plant a touch deeper than they were in the pot and backfill with a 50-50 mix of normal garden soil and compost/good quality topsoil. Water in well. If necessary, add a cane support initially. Spread mulch over the entire area to help retain moisture. Water deep and long to encourage roots to go down.

Initially probably twice weekly and through the first summer. After that a weekly soaking will be sufficient and, with some drought resistant varieties, can become negligible. Keep your hedge-line free of weeds. Apply a general purpose fertiliser once a year to encourage growth. Trimming/Pruning Hedges: Trimming will probably not be necessary for the first two years. Deciduous hedges are usually pruned in winter – it helps to be able to see their framework and stimulates lots of bushy young growth with spring weather. Evergreen hedges are usually pruned in late winter/very early springtime, after the risk of cold weather. Once your hedge has reached its desired height, cut the growing tip and this will encourage width. On an established hedge, cut sides and top to promote lots of new growth. The base of the hedge should be wider than the top. This is so that light can also reach the lower half of the hedge to maintain its density right down to ground level. Here are some hedging ideas but there are many more, so come and talk to me: Dodonaea viscosa purpurea, purple hop bush. A real toughie with lovely bronzed foliage with pale pink bract flowers forming a pretty contrast. Good in wind, full sun and becomes very drought resistant.4m high x 2m spread. Evergreen. Eleagnus x ebbingei, silverberry. Sage leaves with silver underside and strongly fragrant white flowers in springtime. Another tough one.
3m x3m Evergreen. Metrosideros excels, New Zealand Christmas tree. Another toughie with sage green leathery leaves and red powder-puff like flowers throughout the summer. 10m x 5m but prune to keep smaller. Very wind resistant. Evergreen. Murraya exotica, orange jasmine. A beautiful plant, glossy green leaves and white intenselyscented flowers. For a more protected and special position. 3m x 3m. Evergreen. Myrtus communis, myrtle. Neat green leaves and striking creamy scented springtime flowers with prominent stamens. A very traditional and easy planting. 1m x 1m Evergreen. Rosa rugosa, rugosa rose. Bright green wrinkled foliage, very prickly with large single ephemeral flowers in pink or white, followed by big fat hips. A real survivor. 1.5m x 1.5m Deciduous. Viburnum tinus, laurustinus. Glossy leaves and flattened heads of fragrant white springtime flowers followed by blue-black berries. Tough and easy. 2m x 2m Evergreen. So you see, there are a lot more options than cypress, myoporum (transparante) and oleander! New Year may be a significant event for many. But the absurdities of the celebration cannot escape a skeptic. Here are some funny New Year quotes. What better way to start a New Year than with a hearty laugh?
Anais Nin I made no resolutions for the New Year. The habit of making plans, of criticizing, sanctioning and moulding my life, is too much of a daily event for me.
Year's resolution. James Agate New Year's Resolution: To tolerate fools more gladly, provided this does not encourage them to take up more of my time.
Oscar Wilde Good resolutions are simply checks that men draw on a bank where they have no account. Robert Paul I'm a little bit older, a little bit wiser, a little bit rounder, but still none the wiser.
Mark Twain New Year's is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls and humbug resolutions.
Eric Zorn Making resolutions is a cleansing ritual of self assessment and repentance that demands personal honesty and, ultimately, reinforces humility. Breaking them is part of the cycle.
Anonymous A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one Year and out the other.
Brooks Atkinson Drop the last year into the silent limbo of the past. Let it go, for it was imperfect, and thank God that it can go.
Bill Vaughan An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.
Leonard Bernstein From New Year's on the outlook brightens; good humour lost in a mood of failure returns. I resolve to stop complaining.
Bill Vaughan Youth is when you're allowed to stay up late on New Year's Eve. Middle age is when you're forced to.
Charles Lamb New Year's Day is every man's birthday.
G. K. Chesterton The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. Unless a man starts on the strange assumption that he has never existed before, it is quite certain that he will never exist afterwards. Unless a man be born again, he shall by no means enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

MOVEMBER Alick Howard reports on money raised for mens health issues
S
ome of you reading this may not be familiar with 'Movember' and wonder why, during the month of November, men suddenly start to grow hairy top lips. (Apparently the rumours are not true that some women also do the same.) Well, Movember was started in Melbourne, Australia in 2003 with the aim of highlighting men's health issues, particularly prostate and testicular cancer as well as mental health. Along with the moustaches, this independent charity has grown and is now a global charity raising funds in twenty-one countries. With this background, four “mouskateers”, or Mo Bros as they're officially known, from Competa decided to give it a go. So clean shaven on 1st November, Stevie T, Napster, Andy and me packed away the razors and shaving foam for the month and the challenge was on. What style of Mo would we go for? Stevie T and I decided we'd try the droopy style of the trucker Mo whilst Andy and Napster for the Tom Selleck Magnum PI look. Let the growing commence. Whilst the Mo's started to grow we decided it would be a good idea to try and draw attention to the cause with a local event. As we were becoming proper men for a month

with our manly Mo's, (some more manly than others, I hasten to add), what better way to show our macho credentials than a bar crawl around the bars of Competa. Bring it on – hic! So starting at mid-day on a Saturday in November, the route was to take in a total of 20 bars – Venta de Palma, Bar David, Bar Chicos, Vendimia, Eloy's Bar, Las Gemelas, La Casona, Pericos, La Cantina, Oscars, Bar Fernan, Museo del Vino, Alicat, Teteria, Esquina de Miguel, Alfonsos, Bar Lorena, Bar Estrella, Hotel Balcon and Siddhartha for much needed food. So we didn't forget where we were going as the day/night wore on, Napster had the route printed on his t-shirt for good measure. The rules were simple, we had to have a tubo in every bar, no more no less. As we started out at Venta de Palma we looked like something from a YMCA reunion drink and were joined by Dave, Ron, Pat and Billy. As we went on our merry way we were joined at various points by the odd supporter to share a couple of beers in a few of the bars, such as Isidro from Las Gemelas. Naturally, as the day rolled on, so did we and we lost a few on route as Pat and Ron fell off the wagon, so to speak, at Esquina de Miguels. Billy also did his fair share of random falling over, down the steps to Alicat as well as on route from Miguels to Bar Lorena. It's fair to
say by that time we were all fairly merry men, but you could see in Billy's eyes he was done. He was like a boxer on the ropes whose legs were gone, eyes glazed but somehow he hung on in there. Like a small sapling gently blowing in the wind. Bar Estrella was officially the last bar and the challenge was completed with a final tubo giving a total beer consumption of 10 litres each in as many hours. What better way to celebrate than with, erm, a drink, of course. A bottle of Alhambra Verde at 6.4% proof was the order of the day and the challenge was complete. A final celebratory pizza at Siddhartha and just one for the road and that was it. Stevie T decided to make his “one for the road” a swig of limoncello from the bottle. I'm pleased to say that as well as having sore heads for the cause we also raised over £600 through the Movember website as well as the odd donation made locally. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our Mo efforts and to all the bars we frequented for their understanding and much needed sustenance on route. The Mo's have now gone as have the sore heads but they may return again next November. Washtch thish shpashe – hic!

CURRY IN THE CAMPO Alick Howard visits Finca Los Pinos, Competa for a fabulous Dinner
W
e all know the natural pleasures that can be had in the campo around Competa; walking and hiking, mountain biking, horse riding to name but a few. But now there is another option on the borders of the parque natural. Curry! Alright, I know it's not really an activity but it's certainly a very attractive pleasure that can now be enjoyed at Finca los Pinos. I'm sure curry lovers all have their favourite curry restaurant on and around the coast but now for residents around Competa there's another option. Finca los Pinos, for those who are
68 The Grapevine
not familiar with it, is a bed and breakfast business run by David and Sara Mills made up of a villa, small casitas and log cabins situated on the border of the parque natural as you enter it at the 'helipad' towards El Acebuchal. David and Sara are now offering curry nights twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. Debbie and I were lucky enough to be invited along for a tasting evening with two other friends and a number of other invited guests. Curry in the campo only 10 minutes from our home – bring it on. We arrived at Finca los Pinos and as it was just before Christmas we were greeted with a glass (or two) of mulled wine. The table was set
up in the sun room adjacent to the main villa. David was busy in the kitchen putting the finishing touches to the curries before we were invited to take out seats. The setting was warm and welcoming with no sign of red, flock-patterned wallpaper awful Indian music. The curries on offer to try were a pork vindaloo, southern Indian coconut chicken curry, a Thai beef massaman curry, an aloo gobi and a South African bunny chow. Before we got stuck into the curries we were served with poppadoms accompanied with mango chutney, homemade raita and a harisa based chutney. As if that wasn't enough we were then brought a spicy mango soup,

which was delicious. The curries were served with rice and pitta bread and unsurprisingly I managed to have a try of them all. I do like my curry spicy so my first try was the vindaloo. It wasn't too hot but it had a good spice to it and the flavour was clean. Sometimes with hot, spicy curries the spice takes over and other flavours are lost but not with this one. It had enough spice to satisfy lovers of hot curry without the gee taste you can get which masks the other flavours. The meat was tender, it almost melted in your mouth. The Thai beef massaman curry was a more runny curry and

ideally should be eaten with rice in the juice of the curry, but who needs to stand on ceremony. It was just as good however eaten and again the meat was very tender. Onto the Southern Indian coconut curry. (Burp!) As expected, this was a milder curry with a rich coconut sauce. I'm not a great fan of richer curries but this one hit the spot. As the name suggests the South African bunny chow derives from David's native country and I can say no rabbits were hurt in the process. It originates from the Indian population of Durban in South Africa and traditionally should be served in a hollowed y
out bread loaf. It was the way in which the Indian population of Durban carried out their takeaway curries; edible packaging. This had a different spice and was a bean based curry, which traditionally can contain chicken, lamb or pork. A very different curry experience. Plenty of wine and beer was on offer to accompany the meal. This is a great place to go with friends and enjoy a very local curry experience. David and Sara are excellent hosts so what are you waiting for? Get down there and enjoy a local curry with excellent hosts.

IBM’S PREDICTIONS FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS Annual 5 in 5 report from IBM
I
In the very near future there will be machines that act just like humans, doctors will be able to eradicate cancers using your DNA and the password will finally die a death. That’s according to predictions from tech experts at IBM. The firm’s annual 5 in 5 report, which looks ahead at technology trends has, this year, focused on the development of smarter computers, phones and other machines. It predicts that ‘everything will learn’ from the data we store online, what websites we visit, where we go and how we act and this information will be used for good, and not just for

advertising purposes. According to the annual IBM 5 in 5 report, in the next five years: The classroom will learn you smarter classrooms will use cloud data to learn about students and identify learning disorders immediately. Buying local will beat online shops will combine the convenience of online shopping in physical stores and same-day delivery will improve. Doctors will routinely use your DNA to keep you well - By using advancements in DNA research, doctors will be able to uniquely
identify how a certain cancer or disease will affect a person. Treatments and medications will become more tailored and waiting times will drop. A digital guardian will protect you online - Passwords will be replaced by devices that learn who a person is, how they behave and what sites they use. They will grant access automatically to that person, but also be able to identify unusual or suspicious activity automatically. The city will help you live in it Governments will be able to use data about its residents movements, needs and more to improve cities and towns, including schools and transport routes.

universe as we know it is in fact a projection from a lowerdimensional universe. The theory can be explained in simple terms as akin to a hologram on a credit card. Professor Kostas Skenderis at the University of Southampton explained the concept earlier this year.He said: "The idea is similar to that of ordinary holograms where a three-dimensional image is encoded in a two-dimensional surface, such as in the hologram on a credit card, but now it is the entire Universe that is encoded in such a fashion.

ffice workers in Birmingham claim to have broken the Guinness World Record for the longest Christmas cracker chain. A staggering 749 people linked together to each pull a cracker at the same time smashing the previous World Record of 603 which was set in November. The office workers pulled together to set the new record when they snaked around Oozells Square, Brindley Place, Birmingham. Organiser Lydia Ellis, 34, said: "Everyone crossed hands and pulled, just like people would around a table at Christmas time. "The record hasn't been officially verified at the moment but we are hoping it will be within the next six weeks, we are quite confident that we have smashed the record.

ALCAUCIN DEMONSTRATION More than 100 people, many of them expatriates, took to the streets to demonstrate against a move which they fear could lead to 17 homes being demolished. An anonymous complaint has led Alcaucin Town Council to revoke the permits of 17 houses built on non-urban land between 1997 and 2004. It did so during a meeting at the request of the Directorate General of Land Planning. The regional government body received an anonymous report complaining about these houses. Alcaucin Mayor Domingo Lozano explained the council was only complying with the regional government’s request. "I'm against this measure because it's an atrocity," he added. "It’s surreal. These people bought their houses in good faith, they spent all their savings and some of them have been living here for 20 years," said Councillor Elena

Fernandez. Some hundred people, most of them expatriates, demonstrated in front of the town hall to protest against this measure that could eventually lead to the demolition of the houses. They were summoned by Save Our Homes in Axarquia (SOHA), an organisation set up in 2008 to save homes facing a similar situation. According to SOHA, this is the result of the lack of intelligence by the regional government (Junta de Andalucia) to propose viable solutions to the urban planning chaos that has developed in the last decade. "The Junta has the law by its side. We have justice," said SOHA President Philip Smalley, speaking to Malaga Hoy.
ALMUNECAR BIRD PARK Nearly 3,500 people visited Almuñecar’s Loro Sexi Bird Park on its reopening on Friday December 6. Visitors could see the refurbishment carried out at the premises, as well as new animals now dwelling in the park including lemurs, meerkats and kangaroos. Almuñecar Mayor Trinidad Herrera attended the reopening ceremony together with the Councillor for Environment, Luis Aragon, and the park’s vet..
BANK ROBBERY IN MALAGA A Bankrupt entrepreneur from Granada tried to 'rob' a savings bank in Malaga hoping he would be sent to prison. The man, aged 52 and the owner of a travel agency, saw no other alternative to escape his creditors than being in jail. However, a judge set him free after spending a night in a cell at the provincial Police Station. The desperate business owner entered the Caja Rural del Sur branch office in Malaga with a knife hidden inside a paper bag. After explaining to the bank director that he only intended to be sent to prison, he asked him to lock the office’s doors to prevent any client from coming in. The man remained locked up for a bit longer than 10 until a Local Police unit arrived at the saving banks branch shortly before. Two officers entered, subdued the entrepreneur and took his paper bag before handcuffing him. The man told the officers he had assaulted the bank employees, but they denied it. When the officers identified him, they found out he didn’t have any criminal record.
