Last month the in-laws came from England to look after the kids for the weekend while we took a trip to Barcelona to watch the Formula 1 Grand Prix, which was all part of a birthday present. Although it's true the coverage is better on TV, it’s great to be actually there watching it. You can really see how unbelievably fast the cars go and of course soak up the general atmosphere. It is a family day out, although to be honest it was great just to be ourselves without the kids! The Grand Prix circuit is actually in a very small village called Montmelo which is half an hour from Barcelona but extra trains and buses are laid on to the village over the race weekend. The organisation of it all was fantastic. Montmelo was easy to reach from Barcelona and walking from the train station to the track there were stalls throughout the village of Montmelo selling food, drink and F1 merchandise. We had general admission tickets which allowed us to choose from a number of grassy areas to watch the race with a number of well placed big screens all within easy sight. We had a great time and if you like F1, I would definitely recommend the Barcelona Grand Prix. It is easy to get to from Malaga and cheap too. We stayed in the centre of Barcelona so watched the racing by day and then ate out in the centre at night. Having been to Barcelona before, albeit 20 years ago, we didn't feel the need to do the sights. However, Barcelona itself is a great place to holiday, as it's a city on the beach, although admittedly it had all changed dramatically since our last visit. Thanks goes to the in-laws for coming over specially, we had a great time! Enjoy and keep reading The Editor

bullfighter narrowly avoided death after he was gored twice in the neck by a bull during Madrid’s annual taurine festival – and then asked the doctor if he could return to “kill the bull”. Saúl Jiménez Fortes, a matador from Malaga, had been fighting his second bull of the day when he was hoisted up on the animal’s horns and then injured. He managed to get to his feet when his fellow bullfighters arrived to distract the bull, and was carried off with his right hand pressed to his heavily bleeding neck. A combination of "luck" and immediate surgery by the inhouse doctor saved his life after the incident at the capital’s Las Ventas bullring. According to the medical report, Mr Jiménez Fortes suffered two gore wounds. One was more than five inches deep, damaging the carotid artery, jugular vein, thyroid gland and the oesophagus, reaching the vertebrae; the other four inch wound was close to the parotid

gland.Dr Máximo García Padrós, official surgeon at Las Ventas, said that the matador had asked him to sew up the wound so that he could continue the bullfight.

Serb gangster in Spain was arrested after he attempted to buy a poor immigrant's kidney for 6,000 euros (£4,345) and threatened to kill him if he pulled out of the deal. The gangster, head of a clan based around the sunny beaches near Tarragona in northeastern Spain, wanted the organ for his grown-up son who had kidney disease. The plan came to light during a wider probe into a Serbian clan accused of burglaries in Spain and Germany, the chief of the Spanish police Ignacio Cosido told a news conference. While investigating the burglary racket, officers found the gang had persuaded an undocumented middle-aged Moroccan immigrant to donate his kidney. After undergoing medical tests, "he changed his mind, so

British sailor is reportedly in a vegetative state in hospital in Majorca after falling from the Russian-owned super yacht he worked on while cleaning it.The 22-year-old was rescued unconscious from the water after plunging from Kibo, a 265ft yacht owned by billionaire Alexander Mamut. The harness and seat he was cleaning the vessel from hit his head during his fall. Local press described him as being in a "vegetative state" a week on from the accident off the upmarket Majorcan resort of Puerto Portals. He was named locally as Jacob Nicol, a third assistant engineer on Kibo.An investigating magistrate has questioned the super yacht's captain as part of an ongoing investigation into the accident. It is understood the captain rescued the Brit sailor from the water after he was spotted underwater following his fall. He had been under the water for several minutes and was already nearly 100 feet from the vessel when he was pulled to safety. Kibo, the 74th largest yacht in the world, was delivered to its owner in June 2014.

Salamanca and Zamora and marvelled at the architecture of these ancient places. I have posted to my bog every day with photos and a description of the route and albergue facilities, which has necessitated many hours sitting in bars in order to use the wifi, and of course it was necessary to order a glass of wine on occasion. I have eaten communal meals with many others and I have eaten alone.

A HEALTHY ADDICTION Maggie Woodward

W

hen I wrote my last article for the May edition of Grapevine magazine in the middle of April, I had been walking for just a week. That seems a very long time ago! I have now been walking for a full five weeks (as at 13 May) and have covered 1,000 km's. I am stronger and fitter, a lot leaner and have the most ridiculous suntan marks around my ankles. I've long since parted company from my original walking partner back in Mérida, after walking 500 km's together, and have since met and parted from many interesting new pilgrims from various parts of the world. I am sincerely hoping that by the time this article appears on 1 June I will be safely back in Cómpeta enjoying some home comforts. I have been very lucky with the weather, and haven't suffered many days of rain, although there was one memorable day when I was so drenched that I could wring out my socks on reaching my destination. I have had to remove my boots to ford three rivers, tripped across countless

16 The Grapevine

stepping stones (and on one occasion slipped and a almost landed in the river). The scenery has mostly been spectacular, although occasionally rather boring, I have walked on stunning country tracks amongst beautiful wild flowers, and I have trudged trough construction sites of new motorways and rail lines, and along the narrow shoulders of busy highways with massive lorries hurtling past at frightening speed. I have walked every day for the last 36 days - shortest day 18 km, longest day 45 km, when I arrived at an Albergue to be told that it was full and I would have to find somewhere else to stay. But I wasn't planning on walking another step and after making a phone call to the hospitalera, on the verge of tears, a bed was magically conjured up. I have slept in mixed dormitories with countless men and very few women, have shared bathroom facilities that leave an awful lot to be desired and shared happy times with fabulous people. I have walked through some amazing cities, most notably to date Córdoba, Mérida, Cáceres,

I have never once felt like giving up or thought that I wasn't up to the task, and I am now bouyed up by the realisation that my original walking partner (who I met for the first time outside the church of Santiago in Málaga at 07:00 on 8 April, before setting off for eighteen days in each other's company) will be arriving in Santiago de Compostela, via a different route, on the same day that I will also arrive, and we can complete what we started such a long time ago and walk together to Finisterre - the end of the world - and in so doing will have walked from coast to coast. Don't ask me why I do it. I had never walked for pleasure three years ago when my daughter invited me to join her on the Camino Frances, but now that I have started, I can't seem to stop. I am constantly amazed at how my body reacts to my demands the energy is always there to complete the last few km's at the end of a long day, and I have become stronger with each of my three caminos. I can certainly recommend walking as a form of transport, you can reach so many interesting places and see such beautiful sights. If you would like to read about my Camino Mozárabe in more detail, please take a look at my blog http://www.magwood.me. You never know - you might be inspired to give it a go and become hooked on walking, like I have.

FREE FOOD AT RESTAURANTS FOLLOWING NEW LAW Owner of Periana's Restaurante Cantueso, Nicky Scott, explains the latest food regulation to come out of Brussels

A

new EU law on food allergens means that gluten-free food will be more easily identified and available to those with coeliac disease or any of the many other common allergies triggered by problem foods. Since last December, Cantueso, along with other restaurants and food outlets, have been legally obliged to list and advise when dishes contain any one of 14 key allergens known to cause allergic reactions. They must display a notice advising customers that this information is available, and most restaurants will now have separate menus or lists available, and a member of staff trained to advise. Failure to do this can lead to fines up to 5,000â‚Ź. It is estimated that 1-2% of adults and 5-8% of children are affected by food allergies. This equates to millions of people

throughout Europe with a food allergy, but does not include those with food intolerances. This means the actual number of affected people living with a food allergy and/or a food intolerance is considerably higher. (Interestingly when people in the UK were asked about allergies 20% claimed to suffer!) An allergic reaction can be produced by a tiny amount of a food ingredient that a person is sensitive to (for example a teaspoon of milk powder, a fragment of peanut or just one or two sesame seeds). Symptoms of an allergic reaction can range from being mild such as itching around the mouth and rashes; and can progress to more severe symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, wheezing and on occasion anaphylaxis (shock).

and become seriously ill and died. In a recent case in England the restaurant owner was charged with manslaughter because his curry contained ground peanuts instead of the stated (and more expensive) ground almonds, and a customer died as a result. There is no sure cure for a food allergy and the only way to manage the condition is to avoid food that makes you ill. Each year in the UK there are over 5,000 admissions to hospital due to this problem and 10 deaths, so clearly not a trivial problem. In the past we have helped many families with children who come to stay in our cottages, or to eat at the restaurant, making sure we cook dishes for them that are safe to eat.

There have been many instances where people have ingested peanuts or just dust from them

List of Allegens The new laws for food businesses relating to the labelling and provision of allergen information centres around a list of the 14 most common triggers: l Cereals containing gluten namely wheat (such as spelt and Khorasan wheat), rye, barley, and oats. l Crustaceans and products thereof (for example prawns, lobster, crabs and crayfish). l Eggs l Fish and fish products l Peanuts l Soy beans l Milk and milk products (including lactose). l Nuts (namely almond, hazelnut, walnut, cashew, pecan nut, Brazil nut, pistachio nut and Macadamia nut (Queensland nut) l Celery l Mustard l Sesame seeds l Sulphur dioxide and sulphites l Lupin seeds l Molluscs, for example: mussels, clams, oysters, scallops, snails

l and squid. l mussels,

clams, oysters, scallops, snails and squid. Gluten-Free and Coeliacs It is becoming increasingly common to hear about coeliac disease which is triggered by gluten, and often thought to be an allergy, whereas it is actually an auto-immune disease. It is almost a trendy condition to have, when celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow buy gluten-free snacks for her kids or tennis star Novak Djokovic claims he is world number one due to his gluten-free lifestyle. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye and therefore contained in many common foods such as: bread, pasta, flour, cereals, cakes and biscuits. It acts like a glue in bread, cakes and the like, giving them that chewy elasticity. For coeliacs it is the gluten that causes an auto-immune reaction

in the body which in turn damages the lining of the gut. There are fortunately many foods naturally free from gluten such as: eggs, fruit, vegetables, beans, seeds, nuts and most dairy products. Fish and poultry will also be fine as long as they have not been breaded or battered during cooking. In view of the serious consequences that can befall allergy sufferers, we at Cantueso are happy to cope with the considerable amount of work necessary to comply with the new law and will always try to adapt a dish to suit individual needs. However we will no doubt also have diners again who tell us they are lactose intolerant and carefully select their starter and main but when they see Carmen's home-made deserts, they look thoughtful and say “well I suppose a little won't hurt” :)! ¡Que aproveche!

done, thought, said whatever we feel is more important 'now'. It takes practice to meditate; St. Bernard riding through the forest coming upon a peasant standing at a home made altar asked why he was there, and was told “ it is easy to pray here,” “Easy?” he exclaimed incredulously, the peasant nodded. Dismounting St. Bernard challenged, “if you can say the lords prayer without distraction I will give you my horse!”.. the old chap folds his hands, bows his head and begins “our father who art in heaven..” then opening his eyes asks ”does that include the saddle?”...

MINDFULNESS Jane Gudge reports.

T

o be still, to be aware, to be mindful, is possibly the most simple, natural process the human can experience.. to be entirely calm and content, accepting that we are everything we could ever desire, is as close to an absolute truth as we might imagine. Can we just sit in tranquillity, in peaceful meditation only focussing on breathing in and breathing out even as we become aware that everything within us continues without our needing to control? Our eyes ears, mouth, skin, heart and brain do not stop when we opt out of the madness of our lives for a short while.

However, our heart rate, our brain activity, our digestion are calmed, the effects of meditation are measurable and have phenomenal benefit upon our health. Can we think of a single situation in our entire lives that has been improved upon by our worrying over it? Can we recall times when we thought we were absolutely right only to discover quite the reverse?. We have learned to abuse our minds and bodies; to not listen internally to not be watchful and caring, to ignore the sweet mind voices that we heard as children, to not do what we love but to be ever busy and anxious; happiness and contentment to be put aside until 'later' after we have

There should be a desire to relax the mind, to let go all that we feel we know, all perceived truths prejudices and desires to be put aside, to become open to nothingness, a realisation that we are hardly a pinprick of existence and to accept this is a wondrous concept, to be insignificant and yet part of everything, to know what we know is no more real than what we do not know, to feel utterly at peace. Upon arising might we spend the first five full minutes being quiet; not considering what we must do, think or say during the coming day but just being ourselves and falling in love with that being?

HOTEL FINCA EL CERRILLO Find some quiet time over the Competa Feria weekend.

H

otel Finca el Cerrillo sits just outside the village of Canillas de Albaida. The Hotel was created from an olive mill that sat on this site for over two hundred years. The terraced gardens were once home to paseros (raisin beds) where the owners made raisins from the Moscatel grapes as families in the area still do today. Sue and Gordon Kind bought the run down property in 2001 and

spent two years rebuilding to create a haven that is popular with walkers, painters and people who just want to relax. Their challenge was to preserve the charm and character of the old AndalucĂan Finca that they had fallen in love with whilst installing modern comforts.

was relaxing outside in the shade of the carob tree. Lounging on the Moorish day bed and sipping a glass of wine from the Honesty bar, Margaret told us that she and her husband were regular visitors to the Finca. Over the years they had seen the gardens (literally) blossom into the leafy green oasis that it is today. We were staying for dinner served in good weather on the terrace. The tables were set with white tablecloths, fresh flowers and candles. Although everything was beautifully presented, there was no hint of stuffy formality. Sue told me that they want guests to feel relaxed and not to have to worry about what they are wearing. Some guests like to dress up as part of their holiday whist others welcome the chance not to have to bother. Nobody seems worried about anything as we

enjoy a pre-dinner drink. When the food arrives the buzz of conversation stops as the diners appreciate their wellpresented plates. We start with a selection of tapas. My companion, Lisa, loves the Morcilla (local black pudding made by Antonio in Canillas) drizzled with cane honey and the homemade chicken liver pate served with a red fruit sauce. I do not eat meat so prefer the shrimp fritters and the water melon and Burgos cheese salad with fresh mint dressing. For my main course Christine, the chef, has prepared a boneless fillet of bream served with a light vegetable broth and Patatas a lo Pobre (poor man’s potatoes.) Lisa and the other guests are enjoying a rack of lamb with a herby crust which she tells me is delicious. Lemon tart made with fruit from the garden is mouth-watering served

with Valencian orange slices and homemade ice cream. After dinner some people take their coffee to the carob tree to share a cigarette (and by the sound of it a very funny joke!) Lisa and I decide that we will skip the coffee and take a night cap in the Treehouse bar. A short stroll on a lighted path through the olive grove brings us to ‘Basil’s Bar’ at the Treehouse. We take our drinks into the overarching tree canopy, subtly illuminated by a softly glowing ‘moon’ hanging high in the branches. Looking back, the Finca is silhouetted against the starry night sky with Mount Maroma as a backdrop. It is one of those magical moments – a magic that Finca el Cerrillo weaves for its many returning visitors. See advert below.

AN EXPATS ROUGH GUIDE TO A POSITIVE STAY IN A SPANISH STATE HOSPITAL. As experienced by Martin Robinson

T

here is always tension when cultures meet and none more so when you are a sick Expat, have poor Spanish and you have been admitted to a Spanish state hospital. Having spent over a week recovering from major surgery in Colemar Hospital I have made some observations to help the hospitalised Expat cope with the experience. Medical care in Spain is among the best in Europe, technical expertise is high and world class in some areas like cancer treatment. Wards are cleaned regularly and hygiene is superb. Food is nutritious and has a Spanish emphasis. Apart from the obvious language difficulties in a Spanish hospital (most hospitals now have part time translators to help you if your Spanish is weak) there are many other significant differences to contend with in attitude, expectations and family involvement with the patient. Not to mention living close to other patients that have an entourage of family supporters coming and going at all times that tend to set up 'camp' in your two person room. The partner or family carer of a patient is expected to work hands on along side nurses to

36 The Grapevine

tend the patient, change the bed linen daily, help wash and dress the patient, take them to the toilet if necessary and sleep next to them in a very uncomfortable hospital chair. If you or you patient do not meet these expectations then you will be an exception to the rule. This culture of care is managed by delightful nurses that are very helpful and professional. Some speak English and their smiles are plentiful. Nurses undergo a four year degree programme to fully qualify. The Spanish way of health support for patients by their families has to be commended. I know of no other culture so dedicated to looking after a loved one. Unfortunately the Expat will find this approach intrusive, noisy and out of their experience of patient care in their home country where hospitals regulate the movement of visitors, visiting times and impose rules on mobile use and noise generally. You may be well out of your comfort zone. When the extended family of the Spanish patient in the next bed take over the room they tend to use the opportunity to socialise, with grannies, mothers, uncles and aunties chatting forcefully.

The younger members of the family tend to sit and talk to each other or answer their phones and text incessantly or watch TV. All this tends to happen three times a day; lunch time, early evening when the younger children visit and late evening for the adults. Most of the double rooms stay with their doors permanently open day and night so the corridor is noisy with the coming and goings from other rooms. Once this is all over at about 10.30 life settles down, the noise subsides and the sleep interruptions set in. Spanish patients and partners get ready for bed after a busy day. The light is often left on in their half of the room the door is often left open to the corridor and sometimes the toilets are used in the night with the door open. You and your Spanish patient and their partner settle down for a peaceful night's sleep to let the healing process take its course. Most middle aged people snore and the two lovely people only two metres away from you are no exception. You might be a snorer yourself so you too can contribute to the cacophony of noise.

So here are a few tips: Travel light; you need few clothes; you can get away with going home in the clothes you came to hospital in because you will have clean pyjamas, a towel and bed linen chanced daily. Rooms are warm and have air con; you will not need your winter warmers. Which bed? Ask for the bed nearest the window if you can or ask to change beds if the 'window' bed becomes vacant; the other bed is in the darker end of the room and is next to the bathroom and near the open door to the corridor. It has less fresh air from open windows. Also, every visitor going to the 'window' bed will have to pass by your bed first. Anyway, it is nicer to have some sort of outside view. Footwear; flip flops or sandals are best. Odd socks; you will be expected to wear anti DVT long socks most of the time, these are more amusing than anything else.

To advertise call 637 028 873

Bed linen; linen will be put out for you so make the bed yourself or do it with the help of your visitors unless you cannot move from the bed because you are hooked up to drips and drains etc. in which case an orderly will miraculously make the bed with you in it. Always; take a sleep blindfold AND earplugs! (similar to those you get on a plane) Entertainment; take a tablet or kindle or I Pad or smart phone loaded with films or stuff to read or do;the TV in your room is small and is Spanish. Maybe even fall back on a traditional paper book! Noisy interruptions; take earphones or you will not hear anything if the room is full of people talking and the TV is on. There is no WiFi; consider buying a data sim card for the duration if you want to email etc. (about 10â‚Ź for a month for 1 GB) Keep all your personal stuff in your locker by the bed and try to keep the table top clear for your food tray; note. the vertical table

pulls up and out and the height and angle can be adjusted. Have lots of bottles of water in your locker and any other treats you are allowed. Washing and showering; Take your wash bag but you will not need a towel. Hygiene; always use the disinfectant hand wash on the wall regularly. If you do not speak good Spanish always take a native speaker on entry to hospital or ask for a translator (they a voluntary and only available until two pm. at their special desk near the reception area, if there are none there; wait) Food is adequate, healthy and nutritious but may not be to your liking. Get your visitors to bring you in some healthy supplementary items you like (unless you are on a controlled diet or drip) Get well soon! Martin Robinson

increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.

Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es

The mean average monthly salary in Spain in 2013 was just €1,324 while 34 per cent of the country's 16,682,861 employees earned the minimum wage of €645. Tax office figures show that almost half of Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called

RECIPES FROM THE COMMUNITY COOKBOOK Raising money for Cudeca.

H

ere are a couple of recipes for those with a sweet tooth. Both are easy to make and can be prepared in advance so they are fantastic for entertaining.

These recipes are from the Community cookbook which costs 8,00 Euros from Sugar & Spice, La Boutique or Todo Papel all in Competa. The book contains brilliant 52 recipes donated by the local Spanish and international community. All the money raised (less printing costs) goes directly to

the local Cudeca charity. Easy Key Lime Pie Prep Time: 20 mins Cooking Time: 30 mins Serves: 6-8 people Ingredients 300g Hobnobs or digestive biscuits 150g melted butter 397g condensed milk 3 egg yolks 4 limes and zest

Ingredients 5 Mars Bars 100ml cream 400ml vodka You can also use Terry's Chocolate Orange, Peppermint Aeros, After Eight Mints, in fact anything you fancy! 1. Cut up the Mars Bars into small pieces and melt in a pan on a low heat with the cream, stirring until smooth and mixed together. Let it cool slightly, and then add the vodka stirring all the time. Pour into a bottle; shake well and once cooled keep in the freezer. It will not freeze, shake before serving. Thanks to Elaine Greer for donating these two recipes.

This is a delicious tangy treat that is really easy to make but is sure to impress your guests.

FESTIVALS OF THE WORLD: WHERE TO GO IN JUNE This is an excerpt from Lonely Planet's A Year of Festivals

F

estivals are a living, dancing museum of cultures and traditions in an increasingly globalised world. There is no better place for travellers to understand a country than an event where it proudly celebrates its individuality, whether through music, camel races or monumental food fights. Duanwu Jié (Dragon Boat Festival) Location: Húnán province, China Date . 20 June 2015 During the Dragon Boat Festival, China’s rivers fill with colourful crafts decked out to look like dragons, from fearsome snout to scaly tail. The boat races are a lot of fun but the festival’s roots lie in

54 The Grapevine

tragedy. El Colacho (Baby-jumping Festival) Location: Castrillo de Murcia, Burgos, Spain Date: Sunday following Corpus Christi. 7 June 2015 Grown men dress up in red and yellow costumes and leap over babies. The little-known ritual has taken place in the equally obscure province of Castilla y León in northwest Spain since 1620. The idea behind El Colacho is that the jumpers, with their devil costumes, whips and truncheons, are personifications of diabolical evil. When they leap, evil follows them and the babies’ souls are cleansed.

Isle of Wight Festival Location: Seaclose Park, Newport, Isle of Wight, England Dates: The second Thursday in June for four days: 11-14 June 2015 The music event on one of Britain’s best-known satellites has had a patchy history. In 1968, the only major act on the first bill was Jefferson Airplane (of ‘White Rabbit’ fame), who played to a crowd of 10,000 on a stage made of two trailers. There was a large open sewer. In 1969 the audience swelled to 150,000, drawn by one Bob Dylan. Lajkonik Festival Location: Rynek Glówny, Krakow, Poland

Date: Thursday after Corpus Christi. 11 June 2015. According to Polish legend, when the head of Krakoated a Tatar marauder in the 13th century, he slipped into the Mongolian’s robes and triumphantly rode into the city. Feast of St Anthony Location: Alfama, Lisbon, Portugal Dates: 12–14 June On the feast day of St Anthony, patron saint of Lisbon, the Portugese capital goes sardine crazy. The winding streets and steep staircases in Alfama, the city’s oldest quarter, fill with the smell of sardines being grilled outside little houses and restaurants. Sónar Location: Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona, Spain Dates: starts on the Thursday, the third week in June, 18-20 June 2015. Billing itself as a festival of progressive music and multimedia arts, Sónar began in 1993 as a hobnobbing opportunity for the music industry and now attracts 80,000 electronica lovers. The cutting-edge festival is an appropriate excuse to visit Barcelona, where Gaudí built psychedelic buildings in the early 1900s and the Spanish Civil War inspired great literary accounts. Riding of the Marches Location: Scottish Borders, Scotland Dates: from early June The Riding of the Marches, or Common Riding, takes place throughout the summer in major Scottish Borders towns. Like many Scottish festivals, it has ancient traditions, dating back to the Middle Ages, when riders would be sent to the town boundary to check on the common lands. In those dark days of brigands, rogues and highwaymen, the young riders faced many perils including clashes with incursive neighbouring settlements. Summer Solstice

To advertise call 637 028 873

Location: Stonehenge, Wiltshire, England Date: 21 June Summer solstice is a subject of much controversy. Having inspired ancient druids to perform rituals at stone circles and Burning Man founder Larry Harvey to incinerate an effigy, its very name causes discord. The solar event, when the sun is directly above the northern hemisphere, indicates that hemisphere’s midsummer. However, because the same moment is midwinter in the southern hemisphere, it could more neutrally be called the northern solstice. Regatta of St Ranieri Location: Palazzo Medici, Pisa, Italy Date: 17 June Venice may be famous for its gondolas, but across the country, Pisa stages this 1500m dash up the River Arno, a tradition dating to the 1290s. The four narrow rowboats, differently coloured to represent the city’s four districts, each contain a steersman, a climber, and eight oarsmen struggling against the current. Pride Week Location: New York, USA Dates: 28-30 June 2013 The world’s LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) communities party in the streets around 27 June, the date in 1969 when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York’s West Village. The ensuing Stonewall riots lasted several days and are considered to be the beginning of the modern gay-rights movement. Bloomsday Location: Dublin, Ireland Date: 16 June In order to create the critical distance required to write about Dublin, the great Irish scribe James Joyce went into selfimposed exile. In contrast, the

biggest decision Bloomsday’s Joyce-loving participants face is which pub to visit next. Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun) Location: Sacsayhuamán, Cuzco, Peru Date: 24 June Oft parodied by popular culture, for example the Tintin book Prisoners of the Sun, this Peruvian paean to the sun god, Inti, used to involve mass sacrifice. Llamas got the chop in the gory ritual, which was also dedicated to Pachmama, Inti’s wife and the goddess of fertility and harvests. Batalla del Vino (Battle of the Wines) Location: Biliblio, Haro, La Rioja, Spain Date: 29 June On St Pedro’s Day in Haro, capital of northern Spain’s Rioja producing region, thousands of people take to the streets toting water pistols loaded with wine. If they’re ambitious, the vino guerrillas might use a pump-action supersoaker or spray can, while traditionalists and masochists opt for gourds, buckets, bottles and old boots. Glastonbury Festival Location: Worthy Farm, Pilton, Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England Dates: 24-28 June. The colossal summer knees-up in King Arthur country is the world’s biggest and best music festival. It’s like Woodstock, except it takes place pretty much every year. The list of performers who have rocked the venue’s muddy fields reads like a who’s who of popular music: Dylan, Bowie, Oasis, Blur, Massive Attack, Orbital, Björk, Radiohead, The Cure.

generously sponsored by Competa Hikes. Once again, I had a fantastic team of people helping me arrange the day;- Elaine Greer, Inez Leniere Lopez, Jenny Napier, Mave Moore, Remy Goeloe, Sandra Simpson, Scott McQuillin and Steve Condon – thank you all so much. On the actual day, I had over twenty volunteers who again dedicated their time to help me and Cudeca. I couldn't do this without any of you, thank you.

DAY FOR LIFE Adding life to days.

A

t the end of April, many people from our local Competa community and surrounding villages came along and joined “Day for Life” – a family fund raising day in aid of our Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice and services . The day commenced for those who wanted to participate with the sponsored “Walk for Life” celebrating it's tenth year. Some forty two people joined the 5km walk around the village of Competa and for the first time, we had our very own Mr. Motivator!! “Remy Goeloe” encouraging us to warm up, albeit in the drizzling rain before we set off. There was a “watering hole stop en route” at Bar Vendimia where Jose generously donated a % of the walkers spend to Cudeca. The event then extended into “Day for Life” at the rural Alberdini Hotel, Competa with entertainment for both adults and children. The first challenge was to see who could hold the Body Plank for the longest length of time with a great achievement from Martine Linden and Wally de Walliuis who each held it for six minutes. Ten people fiercely competed for the Darts Challenge Cup throughout the afternoon sponsored by Pavo Real which

62 The Grapevine

was eventually won by Ian Greer with runner-up Dave Collier. The challenges in the Games Zone included Tin Can Alley, Hook the Bottle, Hoopla and Float the Lemon. On a relaxing note, you could enjoy a massage or reflexology from Martine, or have your nails and face painted!! It was then time to enjoy the infamous Paellagigante, of which the Alberdini donated 2euros of each portion sold to Cudeca and at the same time enjoy music from flamenco guitarist Pedro. Unfortunately due to the weather and space constraints, the other live musicians Andy Time and Aire Flamenco were unable to set up but they have generously donated their time to support Cudeca on Sunday 14th June, see separate advertisement. The stalls all enjoyed a successful time; especially the delicious homemade cakes and sausage rolls, the local produce where Jo was continually squeezing fresh oranges for juice and the Marmalady with her superb range of chutneys and jams. The day ended with the largest raffle sponsored by local businesses, a real community effort and over 50 prizes with an estimated value of 1700 euros. The first prize was worth 350euros

A special thank you to our generous sponsors Trailblazers who arranged the volunteers Tshirts to celebrate our 5th year of Day for Life and also one of the games. Another game prize was given by Sugar & Spice. Again, Sweet Kiosko Nino Bonito, Competa sponsored the sweets for Guess the Sweets in the Jar and the children's lollipops. The generosity of our wonderful community never ceases to amaze me, and at the time of going to press, we have raised over 4400 euros which includes an extremely generous anonymous donation of 200euros. There are still a couple of Cudeca tins still to be counted. So the exact final figure will be announced in next month's Grapevine. Thank you to everyone for your support in whatever way, helping on the day, walking, sponsoring a walker, baking a cake and for coming along on the day. You really do ensure that Cudeca continue adding life to days through their Special Kind of Caring, over 1000 patients during 2014. Cindy Jones Cudeca Volunteer – Competa

They originated in Mexico and the American Southwest. Nowadays their 300 species extend from Utah into northern South America and the Caribbean. They like full sun and are found growing naturally in deserts and open grassland. They belong to the family Asparagales, sub-family Agavoideae. The name agave is from the Greek meaning 'stately or noble' and the Aztecs knew it as metl, translating as 'magnificent'.

THE A TEAM – AGAVES AND ALOES Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh.

G

ardeners and nongardeners alike often confuse agaves and aloes, understandably! Even experts can have some trouble with them as they often appear so alike. If we delve back into their fascinating history, the differences become a little clearer, though they are an example of what we call convergent evolution. This means that two completely distinct genera of plants develop in two different parts of the world yet develop a very similar appearance and way of living. Both have adapted to live in dry inhospitable places and are invaluable in our gardens to provide form, structure and drama with almost total neglect! The aloes and agaves are monocots - note the way that leaves wrap around the stem. Other examples are grasses, orchids and leeks. In spite of this initial similarity, the aloes and agaves are only distantly related, with their last common ancestor thought to have existed around 93

84 The Grapevine

million years ago when dinosaurs still walked the Earth. Both are succulents with fleshy leaves arranged in rosettes and have evolved in similar environments. Both can handle high summer heat and nutrient-poor soil and, importantly, long periods of drought. They look surprisingly similar and fill the same ecological niche yet they live continents apart. Aloe are “Old World” plants. They originally grew in sub-Saharan Africa on the Saudi Arabia Peninsula and on Madagascar. From there they spread along the coast of the Mediterranean and to South Africa where the aloe genus evolved into the 500 species that we know today. They belong to the family Liliaceae, along with alstroemeria, agapanthus and tulips and are in the sub-family Asphodeloideae. They range from small creepers to tree-like plants, hence arborescent. In our climate, in general, they prefer a little light shade. The name aloe probably stems from the Arabic word alloeh meaning shining bitter substance. .

Agave are “New World” plants.

Leaves: the leaves of aloe are fleshy, if you break one open it will ooze a clear mucilaginous gel. Think of the well-known aloe vera, the healing plant. By contrast, leaves of agaves are fibrous, the classic being agave sisalana which is cultivated for its tough stringy fibre which is turned into cord, string and rope – or sisal. Both plants store water in their leaves. Flowers: the flowers of aloe are tubular and quite fine, often produced in large clusters or candelabras atop long stems. They typically bloom in springtime and early summer and range from creamy-white, yellow, orange, bright red and purple. They are loved by insects and tiny birds with long beaks. Agaves also flower atop a long stalk that shoots up from the centre of the rosette of leaves. This flower spike is called an inflorescence and it towers over the plant with a bushy grouping of flowers at the top. The plant uses enormous reserves to produce such a massive spike and, typically, dies afterwards – literally flowering themselves to death. Consequently, agaves only flower once in their lifetime and this massive outpouring usually occurs after 10 to 30 years of life, though sometimes longer. It earns the plant the nickname of Century plant. Uses: aloes are mainly used as medicinal plants, the most

common of which is aloe vera, typically used as a treatment/preventative for all types of skin complaints, burns, bites and stings. Internally it is believed to calm stomach and digestive problems and it is indicated as an anti-cancer and anti-AIDS plant. Agaves give us, predominantly, food, drink and household products. They have long been considered as one of the most important crops in their corner of the world with a multitude of uses. Their fibre made paper and brushes to write with, sisal for ropes and nets to hunt and fish, shoes and clothes and thread for sewing. Their extremely sharp spines became sewing needles and nails. The juice extracted was used in alcoholic drinks, to make bread, honey and sugar, vinegar, soap and, to a lesser degree, medicines. The strong flower stalks were used as beams in house construction and their tough dried leaves formed walls and roofs. Any surplus made fine firewood and the ashes were an excellent cleaning product! They were commonly planted as a stock-proof barrier and are often still seen here marking old boundaries or roadsides. It must be remembered that whilst many aloes soothe skin, many of the agave family have extremely irritating juice – so don´t mix your aloes and your agaves, identification is vitally important. Some popular aloes: Aloe arborescens, red hot poker aloe is from South Africa and a very popular choice for its bright glowing red winter colour. It branches and bulks rapidly and can build up to a height of 3m or more if left to its own devices. Young plants can be easily detached and spread around. It looks particularly good in lines, perhaps at the base of dark cypress trees. Aloe ferox, Cape aloe or bitter aloe. The leaves look similar to aloe marlothii but the flower spike

is distinctive, being single and vertical and a glowing orange-red. Those of you who bit your nails in childhood will have fond memories of this plant – it is from this that bitter aloe is extracted! Aloe marlothii, the mountain aloe. A striking single-stemmed aloe with great presence which can reach 4m high. The leaves are large and broad covered with spines on the upper and lower surfaces with maroon coloured teeth along the leaf margins. The flowers are held candelabra style and can vary from the typical gold through yellow, orange or bright red. Aloe vera syn. barbadensis. This is one of the oldest plants on record due to its medicinal properties and health benefits. It is a must in every garden or in a pot on your terrace. It will reach maturity in 3 to 4 years with a height of 75cm and up to 21 leaves. It will produce ´pups´around the mother plant which can be carefully removed and replanted. Some popular agaves: Agave Americana, plain green colouring. Agave Americana marginata, with bold green and yellow stripes along the length of the leaves. Agave Americana medio-picta alba with solid cream bands down the centre of the leaves, edged with blue-grey. All of these form spectacularly statuesque plants that are exceedingly tough and drought resistant. They bear very vicious spines at the leaf tips (that can be cut off for safety) and all along the margins too. Agave attenuata, the foxtail or pearly agave. A much softer and spineless agave with a lovely pearly sheen and a dramatic curved foxtail flower spike. It is one of the more tender members of the family, not tolerating freezing conditions, snow or frost. Agave ferox, a giant agave which can easily reach 2m high with a width of 3m with a solid chunky appearance and vicious barbed leaves. It is one of the most

prolific agaves, so by planting just one you can quickly spread your collection. Yellow green flower. Please don´t forget, we will be changing to Summer Hours from 4th June, so open between 9am and 2pm. June Open Day as part of our Birthday Celebrations! The evening will be the annual mid-year fund-raising event by the Costa Animal Society and it is already shaping up to be another terrific night. The summer ball will start with canapés and drinks on the terrace, after which guests will be served a three-course dinner, including wine and coffee. Then it will come the Grand Raffle with many quality prizes to be won as usual, followed by dancing through the evening with music from Mike and Geoff, the Flying Dolphins. cash needed to care for stray and abandoned animals in the area. All money raised from the evening will go directly to CAS. The venue will be the Caves Restaurant in Maro and tickets, at 35 euros each, can be reserved with the CAS office in Nerja, or by calling Diana on 679 714 612. Come and celebrate mid-summer with CAS and help a local charity at the same time.

CALLING SPRING FOSTERERS! Spring always brings an explosion of puppies and kittens and inevitably many are dumped at the Costa Animal Society (CAS) or other charities' front doors. Unfortunately, CAS and all animal protection groups are already full to the brim with adult abandoned animals and there are no spare funds to place these new waifs in kennels. Therefore, CAS urgently needs people to foster puppies and kittens, even if it is just for a couple of weeks, until a more permanent solution can be found. Please contact the CAS office on 95 252 3607 for a no-obligation chat if you could help with fostering. It's an ideal way for pet lovers who spend only part of the year in Spain to enjoy the company of an animal while they are here.

SAN JUAN The festival of San Juan is celebrated on the evening of the 23rd of June each year with people staying out late and even camping on the beaches. This yearly event is filled with rituals which are still popular today amongst many of the Spanish partly because of their religious roots but more likely because they're just fun. One of the most obvious spectacles of the San Juan festivities are the lighting of bonfires (Hogueras) which in coastal areas tend to take place on the beaches. These fires have two symbolic meanings, one is to give the sun more strength as from this day on the sun gets weaker and the days shorter and the second is to cleanse the onlookers of their sins. It's said that anybody who jumps over one of these bonfires three times will be purified of their sins and their problems burned away. You'll also sometimes see small pieces of paper being burnt on these fires too. It is a common tradition in some parts of Spain to write down wishes and throw them onto the fires for them to come true!

NEW MUSEUM IN VELEZ MALAGA The contract for the construction of Velez-Malaga’s new museum has been awarded to the company Alabaida Infraestructuras SA. The total cost will amount to €908,386, €300,000 less than the original bidding price, which was around €1.2 million. Mayor Francisco Delgado Bonilla explained that the new museum would be located in the former Hospital San Juan de Dios and was expected to be completed by the end of the present year. “The chosen company has committed to reduce the period of completion, which had been estimated at 11 months,” said the mayor. “These new museum facilities have been designed to foster and promote our historic town centre.” He added that the museum would be home to 1,700 items from the town’s history including archaeological remains, documents, photographs belonging to private collections, as well as the municipal archive of Malaga.
