We are back! At the end of March we made the difficult decision not to print the April 2020 Edition (issue 180) of The Grapevine Magazine. This was the first month The Grapevine Magazine had not been printed since we started 16 years ago. We would like to say thank-you to all our advertisers and contributors for their support which has enabled us to put together this June edition. We have used all relevant content from the prepared April edition for this June edition including The Property Feature which can be seen on pages 54 to 64. This month we haven't focused too much on the Coronavirus situation we have preferred to bring you information about the lovely area where we live, work and holiday in. This is in the hope we will have returned to some kind of normality by the time you pick the magazine up. The last couple of months have been extremely challenging for many (including ourselves) on both the health and economic fronts. It may be a while before the life we led before re appears but over the coming weeks I believe we will see a new normal. We can go out, see friends have a drink or eat at a bar/ restaurant, walk and exercise in this beautiful area. We do have a lot to be thankful for.

web designer from Cardiff has been jailed for seven years in Spain for financing and supporting terrorism. Spain's national court in Madrid heard Ataul Haque and his brother Siful Sujan transferred funds and hitech equipment to the so called Islamic State (IS) group in Iraq and Syria. Haque fled to Spain in 2015 after Sujan was killed in a drone strike in Syria. Haque was found guilty of financing and supporting terrorism but cleared of being a member of a terrorist group. The 37-year-old was sentenced on 10 May after a three-day trial at the Audiencia Nacional on 27 April.

In Store Sale Some people will always prefer to shop in store. Let's be honest, who currently doesn't miss the sociability of in-store shopping? Any experience that I couldn't get during the period of isolation is currently high on my wish list of things to do. EVERYTHING in our shop is discounted, from tea lights to Mosaic Discounts range from 10% to 50%. After nearly 70 days of being confined to our homes, online shopping has become the norm. People have been used to buying without interactions. As we move to the phased approach to the new normal, our bricks and mortar shop will once again be open for business. We will of course be observing social distancing rules and have plenty of hand sanitiser, but as we have 7 rooms of stock, we're unlikely to have to ask people to queue outside!

SPRING SALE La Casa Bella, Back With A Very Cautious Bang

A

s we re-open on June 1st making sure that customers can shop safely is priority number one. Our Spring Sale is available both online and in store but although there is some overlap they are 2 very separate sales offering different products. Moroccan Décor Let's start with Moroccan décor. We have many glorious bits and pieces in our shop and online that are now available in our sale. Lanterns, lights, rugs, and cushions galore. Both online and in store all our Moroccan Mosaic tables are reduced in Price. Something that in 15 years of trading we have never offered before! We have a selection of tables in our shop and in storage in Spain ready for immediate

10 The Grapevine

delivery, and a further selection already made in Morocco due to ship to us in June. Most of these tables can be viewed online. If you have any questions please send us an email. Online Sale We have focussed our online sale items on new season and ready to ship items. There are lots of bright and cheerful summer trends for both inside and out. We have over 300 products s on offer, whilst stocks last, for a limited period. We try to ensure our online service is second to none. We are happy to answer as many questions as you have both pre and post-sale. And we're all real people, we promise you'll never be stuck in one of those frustrating conversations with a chat bot.

I'm sure like me many people are desperate to get a fix of retail therapy. However, we also understand that many customers may be quite hesitant to venture into retail stores unless they really have to. If you are vulnerable, or just nervous please email us and we will set aside a no obligation browsing slot just for you during our closed time. Our current plan is to open from 10 – 2 Wednesday to Saturday throughout June. So that every afternoon can be set aside to clean. We will be closed on Monday's and Tuesdays, so that every week we are able to perform a deep clean. We have a lot of stock, it takes a lot of cleaning! We are living in extraordinary times. We have hundreds and hundreds of beautiful things on offer. Please browse or call in and help a small family business to survive. Let's get this economy kick started!

PULPO GALLEGO A Popular Traditional Spanish Tapas

head meet. If it goes in easily, it's ready to eat.

This tapa recipe is easy, despite its unusual star ingredient. It is simply cooked octopus served with boiled potatoes, olive oil, and sweet Spanish paprika.

Rinse potatoes and clean with a vegetable brush.

Ingredients 1 1/2 pounds octopus (frozen) 4 large potatoes 1/4 cup olive oil ( Spanish extra virgin, to drizzle) 1 dash paprika (sweet Spanish) Method Remove the octopus from the freezer and place it in a large pot of boiling water and cook until soft enough to eat. This usually takes about 1 hour for a 1 to 2-pound octopus. To test its tenderness, insert a knife where the legs and

14 The Grapevine

Remove the octopus from the water and allow it to cool. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Cut into bite-size chunks, slicing the legs in 1/2-inch rounds and the head into thin strips.

Fill a medium-sized pot halfway with water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Boil the potatoes until they can easily be poked with a fork. Remove potatoes from heat and place under cold running water. Allow the potatoes to cool, then peel. Slice into rounds approximately 1/3-inch thick. Arrange potato slices on a serving platter. Place octopus on top. Drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle sweet paprika over top and serve.

You can use either fresh or frozen octopus. Depending on where you live, it may be easier to find it frozen. Keep in mind that fresh octopus should not smell fishy; this is a sign that it's going bad. If it's a fresh octopus, ask the fishmonger to clean it for you. Otherwise, cleaning octopus is not difficult to do yourself. Be sure to remove the ink sac, the section of the head with the eyes, the beak, and the internal organs. If you find boiled octopus at a local ethnic or gourmet food store, this will cut down on the time it takes to prepare this dish. Simply remove it from the package, rinse, and slice. ust a brief note to remind all Tax Residents in Spain that the filling period for submitting the Income Tax Return - Form 100 – for Tax Year 2019 has already started at the beginning of April and ends at the end of June. The coronavirus situation is not an excuse for not filling tax returns on time. All individuals who live in Spain more than 183 days / year are considered Tax Residents and must pay income taxes in Spain for worldwide incomes. In case you spent in Spain more than 183 days during 2019, you are considered tax resident and must file the tax form 100. There are some limits about people who do not have the duty to file the tax form 100. 1)Individuals who have any kind of incomes no higher than 14,000 euros.

Please note that individuals who have incomes from 14,000 euros to 22,000 euro do have the duty to file the tax form 100 when their incomes come from different sources, from marital pensions by divorced spouse; or when the payer did not make any retention (i.e. pensions from foreign country).

Should you have doubt about your duty to file Spanish Income tax returns, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are happy to study your case and confirm your situation. SPANISH SUMMER DRINKS

Typical Drinks Served All Over Spain

T

he rebujito cocktail is a drink made with Sherry, which is a fortified Spanish wine. The cocktail originates in Spain, and it is a refreshing citrus punch with sweet and sour flavors. The rebujito is also quite easy to make, only requiring a few easy to find ingredients. How to Make Rebujito Make this cocktail in a stemless

white wine glass. At its simplest, it is lemonade mixed with dry Sherry, such as Fino or Manzanilla, which are both dry, light, nutty Sherries. The result is a boozy but refreshing lemonade that's perfect for a summer day. This version mixes up a whole batch of Rebujito, so it's great for a party or gathering. If you prefer to make it fizzy, you can replace the lemonade with lemon-lime soda. It makes 8 servings. Pro

tip: Do not use cooking Sherry. It has added salt and tastes terrible. Ingredients 1 bottle (750 mL) of dry Sherry, such as Fino or Manzanilla 2 liters of lemonade or lemonlime soda 8 mint sprigs Ice Instructions In a large bowl or pitcher,

combine the Sherry and lemonade or soda. Stir well to mix. Fill stemless white wine glasses with ice. Add the lemonade mixture. Garnish with a sprig of mint. Rebujito With Homemade Lemonade You can make your own lemonade, which often has a fresher flavor than if you use premade, bottled lemonade. Ingredients 1 cup sugar 6 cups water 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 bottle dry Sherry 8 mint sprigs Ice Instructions In a pan, combine the sugar and water. Cook on high, stirring, until the sugar dissolves completely. Remove from the heat and refrigerate. When the water and sugar solution is cold, stir in the lemon juice. In a pitcher, combine the lemonade and the Sherry. Add the ice and stir. Garnish with mint. Rebujito Variations You can also alter the flavors of the original recipe in multiple ways:

Use a dry white wine or a dry sparkling wine in place of the Sherry. Add ½ cup of Cognac or Armagnac to the punch. Try it with another dry, fortified wine such as dry Vermouth or a dry Madeira in place of the Sherry. Use half brewed iced tea and half lemonade. About Rebujito Rebujito is a wine punch, similar to sangria. Punches are the very earliest forms of cocktails created. The originally contained rum, citrus, and spices. Punches were consumed aboard sailing ships from the British East India Company, and they served two purposes. First, making a punch preserved citrus juice so it didn't go rancid on long voyages, which gave the sailors a chance to consume some vitamin C to avoid scurvy. Second, a punch gave them something to drink aside from beer, which would spoil on long voyages. The rebujito punch originated in Andalusia, Spain. The name is a derivative of the Spanish word arrebujar, which means to wrap. Rebujito is often served at Andalusian fairs, called ferias, in the spring and summer as a thirst quencher for fair goers who are parched after consuming dehydrating Fino in the summer heat throughout the day.

Ingredients: 1 liter of red wine 1 peach 2 oranges 1 apple 1 lemon (juice) 75ml water 3 heaping tablespoons of sugar 1 cinnamon stick 330ml (1 can) carbonated beverage (soda, lemonade) *fruit of your choice: it can be pineapple, mango, banana etc Preparation: Dissolve the sugar with 75ml of warm water in order to create syrup, so it mixes better with the rest of the ingredients. Add the wine, syrup and juice of one orange in a big bowl while stirring, so everything blends together. Peel the fruit (except the lemon) and cut it into small pieces, so it macerates better later on. The other orange that is left over, don’t peel this one, but cut it into slices. Add all the fruit to the wine in the bowl. Incorporate the juice of the lemon, the cinnamon stick and let it rest for two to three hours (if it’s possible). When you serve the sangría, add ice cubes and the carbonated beverage. You can also add some liquor like brandy or cognac. You can also use white wine, but then it’s called clarea instead of sangria. You can even prepare it with cava sparkling wine: then it’s sangria de cava. In Malaga it is most commonly sought in the chiringuitos (restaurants on the beach) to accompany good grilled sardines or fried fish. It’s a classic cocktail to have by the pool or to accompany a sunset after a beach day. And it is as well the essential element in a Moraga (beach party), especially to celebrate every June 23rd the eve of San Juan, the arrival of summer.

THE BREADS OF SPAIN

Most Popular Spanish Breads

T

ortas de aceite de Castilleja de la Cuesta. Tortas de aceite de Castilleja de la Cuesta is a pastry made with extra virgin olive oil, flour, wheat, sugar, seeds, yeast, sesame, aniseed, salt, anise essence, and, if desired, ground almonds. Mrs. Inés Rosales rescued a family recipe in 1910 and started producing and marketing these tasty crispbreads with the help of other women from the area at the crossroads and in the old train station in Seville. The secret behind tortas de aceite is in the preparation, it must be made by hand, because otherwise, the oil would not remain in the dough. The baking takes only a couple of minutes, and the result is a sweet, firm and crumbly crispbread. It has a light and flaky texture and a flavor and fragrance of olive oil and aniseed. Pa de Pagès Català Pa de Pagès Català is a type of round bread traditionally made by hand and baked in bread ovens, in the Autonomous Community of

Catalonia. This bread has a crisp golden crust and is spongy and soft on the inside. It is usually made using white flour, and during the slow fermentation and baking, it develops characteristic large irregular air holes that give it springy consistency. Another unique characteristic is its ability to retain freshness longer than other types of white bread. The quality of this artisan bread depends mostly on the bakers' expertise and experience. Pa de Pagès Català is a high quality, aromatic bread with pleasant acidity and a complex flavor. It is sold in loaves weighing approximately 1 kg. Pan de Alfacar The name Pan de Alfacar refers to bread made at least partly by hand that can be formed into buns, rolls or rings. This bread is made in the municipal areas of Alfacar and Víznar, in the province of Granada. It is creamy white in color and has a spongy consistency due to many air holes that develop during the slow fermentation and baking

process. The most distinctive ingredient in the recipe for Pan de Alfacar is the Alfacar spring water, whose unique physical and chemical composition has a positive effect on the fermentation process of the natural yeast and sour bread dough. This high quality, aromatic bread has a pleasant acidity and complex flavour and is one of the most famous products of the region. Mollete Mollete is a traditional Spanish bread hailing from Antequera. It's made with a combination of yeast, plain flour, whole-wheat flour, salt, sugar, milk, and olive oil. The dough is rolled into ovalshaped disks, and it's then baked until golden brown. Traditionally, molletes are sliced into halves, toasted, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil, and topped with sliced tomatoes and a pinch of salt. In Andalusia, molletes are usually served for breakfast. Pan de Cea Pan de Cea is a traditional type of bread made in the Municipality of

San Cristovo de Cea, in the north-west of the Province of Ourense. It is made by kneading wheat flour, water, salt and masa madre, the previously fermented yeast dough, into an elastic and tough dough. The bread dough is then left to ferment, or rest, for 45 to 60 minutes. The bread is then kneaded once more and baked in special, wood-burning granite ovens. These ovens are the characteristic feature of the production of this bread and are specially shaped to ensure uniform baking. Coca de Recapte Coca de recapte is a traditional Spanish coca variety that's commonly found in Catalonia and Valencia. In Catalonia, this is the most common coca variety which is often sold in bakeries. It consists of a thin bread-dough base that's topped with eggplants and roasted peppers (known as escalivada) in addition to tomatoes and onions. The locals claim that this coca variety was invented in the area of Tarragona and Lleida. Coca de recapte is traditionally eaten cold, and the word recapte in the name of the dish means something like what you have in stock, referring to the fact that the cooks add ingredients which are usually staples of Catalan kitchens. The dough is made with flour, salt, olive oil, yeast, sugar, and warm water, while the topping is made with a combination of eggplants, red bell peppers, onions, olive oil, tomatoes, salt, and sugar. Sometimes, fish such as sardines are added to coca de recapte for even more texture and flavor than it already has. Hornazo Hornazo is a traditional Spanish delicacy made by stuffing bread

with pork loin, hard-boiled eggs, and chorizo. The bread is made with flour and yeast, and the top is usually nicely decorated with various shapes made from the same dough. It has origins in Salamanca, and it is often prepared for Lunes de Aguas festival, celebrated annually on Easter Monday. Nowadays, there are many variations on this festive bread, so it can be stuffed with anything from ham and cheese to tuna and smoked salmon. Talo Talo is a traditional Spanish flatbread made with corn flour and water. It is one of the most popular street foods in Basque, usually filled with txistorra sausage, although one can find talo topped with bacon, cheese, and even chocolate. Originally, it was used as bread in Basque houses, but today it is prepared at home only for special occasions. Pan de barra Pan de barra is a Spanish-style baguette, a rustic bread loaf that’s made with a simple dough consisting of flour, water, yeast, and salt. The dough is shaped into a long, thin loaf, and it is then allowed to rise before it’s slashed on the surface and baked until crispy and nicely browned. Although it resembles the French baguette, pan de barra typically has a harder and drier texture, which makes it an excellent base for sandwiches. In the past, there were slightly different versions of the bread in different parts of Spain, although they

all shared the same long, cylindrical shape. In Madrid, the bread used to be distinguished by a denser texture, while those prepared in Galicia tended to be lighter and fluffier. This bread is consumed everywhere throughout Spain, and it’s the most popular choice of bread used for making Spanish bocadillos, delicious sandwiches that are staples of Spanish cuisine. Roscón de Reyes Roscón de Reyes is a sweet ringshaped bread that is prepared with a sweet, yeasted dough and comes topped with sugar and candied or dried fruit. Though the cake developed from pagan tradition, in modern times it became closely associated with the Epiphany, a Christian holiday held on January 6 that celebrates the arrival of three wise men who came to see Jesus Christ. It is believed that the present tradition started in 14th-century France, but it became deeply rooted in Spain, eventually reaching Latin America, namely Mexico, Argentina, and Uruguay. The cake appears under various names throughout Spain, southern France, Portugal, and Latin America - it is often flavored with orange blossom water or rum, while the center is occasionally filled with marzipan or whipped cream.

SUMMER CYCLING

Beat The Summer Heat By Andy Baker

F

or many cyclists the chance to escape the cold, wet and windy weather at home is something to look forward to. Temperatures in Southern Spain can climb into the mid 30's in July and August. However, this does not mean that riding your bike is impossible. If a cyclist follows some sensible guidelines the cycling season can continue through the summer months. For tourists and locals alike the focus on training for events later in the year. For some, the Axarquia is at its best in the summer months. Cycling on the quiet roads of the interior is a delightful alternative to a visit to the beach. Many visitors combine the two. Early starts make the most of the cooler weather before returning to their accommodation away from the heat of the day. This permits a cyclist to spend time recovering

and relaxing with family and friends.

hottest part of the day which is iddle to late afternoon.

This is a unique time of year. The skies are a brilliant blue and there are clear views of the imposing mountains and vistas across the azure Mediterranean Sea. The roadside is littered with the brilliant pinks and blues of the Jacaranda, Oleander and Bougainvillea flowers. These punctuate the verge to catch the eye and lift the spirits. Thankfully, despite an increase in visitors the provinces roads are still quiet and tranquil. Drivers are noticeably more laid back and tolerant than in other parts of the world. Warm weather in Axarquia can occur any time of the year. However, temperatures and hours of sunshine peak from May to the end of September. During these months, temperatures will be 25*c and above. July and August are usually the most intense. These average temperatures are usually for the

Cyclists can enjoy warm weather cycling more by following some simple advice and guidelines: Acclimatise- Ease yourself in and take some basic precautions to enable you to continue cycling in the summer months. Time of Day- Ideal times to ride are early in the day or in the evening. At these times, temperatures are lower and the sun less fierce. The summer months present longer hours of daylight offering more opportunity to ride in the cooler hours. Many cyclists find the cool air created by the motion of cycling refreshing. Hydration Sounds obvious but it is easy to underestimate the amount of liquid required during the hot months. As, a general rule, if you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. Staying hydrated is

To advertise call 637 028 873

crucial in warmer conditions and doing so will help your cycling performance considerably. Carrying 2 big water bottles is recommended. These can be replenished in bars and shops that are located, in most villages and towns. Local cyclists are accustomed to filling bottles from the many fountains that line the roadside. Personally, speaking I have never had any problems with the fountain water. However if you are unsure about this other options, as mentioned above are available. Ingesting electrolyte drinks also helps to replace minerals and salts lost from sweating. They support you riding at a higher level for longer. On completion of the ride continue to drink fluids to restore hydration levels in readiness for the next ride. Appropriate Clothing Clothing decisions are thankfully simple in the hottest months.

To advertise call 637 028 873

Shorts and shirts are usually adequate. Good quality cycling garments with easy wicking are needed to move sweat away from the body to keep you cool and comfortable. A zipped top is useful when climbing. This can be lowered a little to allow some cool air as you increase your effort. Well- fitting shorts with a good chamois pad protects your sensitive parts when they make contact, with the saddle. Quality eyewear with UV protection is a necessity. These protect your eyes from the bright summer sun and helps to keep you focus on the road ahead. Many riders aspire to the crisp tan lines of the classic cycling tan. However, it is sensible to cover all exposed body parts with a good quality sun protection to prevent sun burn. Most importantly, make sure you cover your neck and apply sun cream liberally to your nose.

Recovery When your ride is finished a cold recovery drink is essential. This can be made in advance and left in the fridge. One of the pleasures of the Axarquia region is the wholesome fresh food available in the shops and restaurants. In summer, there is an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables to accompany your choice of protein. This will help muscles recover from your efforts on the bike. You can also afford to treat yourself to an ice-cream, cold beer or whatever takes your fancy! Reliable weather, quiet roads and stunning scenery cycling in the Axarquia in the summer months is great choice for a holiday. Andy Baker You can read more of Andy’s articles on

Taking a short nap at the hottest point of the day is a sensible move and a very pleasant one! Most people find that the generally slower pace of life in Spain is very agreeable once they make the adjustment. Shops in Spain will typically close between 2.00pm and 5.00pm, giving everyone a chance to take a break.

The average lifespan of a resident of Spain is currently 83.38 years whilst that of a British resident is 81.60. And it’s no wonder when you have all the advantages of fresh air, sun, sea, great food and less stress.

The Mediterranean Diet The amazing food which you’ll discover in Spain is a big part of why the people of Spain are in general healthier than in many other parts of the world. Rich in good quality fruit and vegetables, oils and fish, most people remark on the fact that food here is eaten seasonally, meaning that it’s far fresher than in other countries. Spain’s incredibly rich history history and culture in Spain Spain is culturally one of the most fascinating countries in the world. Retirement in Spain is magical With a rich and chequered history, retired couple in Spain culture enthusiasts will find plenty According to the many thousands to interest them in Spain including of Brits who’ve made the move, mediaeval buildings and quaint, the lifestyle and degree of security walled villages. in Spain far surpasses that to be found in the UK. over Spain, it’s a real tradition and most towns and even smaller villages have their weekly markets where visitors can purchase produce, handmade crafts and gifts. Leather is particularly popular in Spain as there is a long tradition of extremely fine workmanship. World-famous nightlife Nightclubs are a big part of how the Spanish make their living. Not all towns are full of party animals but those that are really know how to do it. Once Ibiza put Spain on the map in the 1980s as the party capital of the world there was no looking back, and many thousands of visitors flock to certain parts of Spain all year round to enjoy the world-class DJ’s and nightlife. Beaches like you’ve never seen We’re not just talking about those popular holiday destinations here but also those hidden, little-known gems which are often well-kept local secrets. We’re talking about beaches like Cala Pregonda in Menorca where the beautiful, long and golden beach is protected by pink rocks which stud the area and add an air of mystery to the spot.Or the turquoise waters of Cala Llombards in Majorca where children can play safely in warm, shallow waters and adults can snorkel or enjoy the relaxing sound of the ocean in one of Europe’s most stunning spots. Small-town Spanish life British expats in small town Spanish café As one happy expat puts it, “everyone is equal here, the local millionaire drinks coffee in the cafe alongside the town window cleaner and everyone gets along.” Residents of rural Spain in particular enjoy a special kind of old-fashioned and simple lifestyle which in many cases hasn’t really changed for hundreds of years. Because some of these towns are a little remote, they are very supportive and very self-sufficient.

PETE´S MAINTENANCE SERVICES The Weather And The Garden

S

uch curious times we are living in, so many uncertainties and plenty of unanswered questions. Can I go out? Do I need to wear a mask? What about gloves? So many grey areas and contradictory information. What is one to do? At least in these unusual and daunting days there are still some things that can be totally relied upon. Weather is one of those things.... sure as eggs is eggs every day we will have some “weather”, and we'll be avidly determined to talk about it!! You can take the Brits out of Britain but you can never stop the overwhelming desire we have to discuss the elements. Here in Southern Spain, we are lucky in as much as we don't experience too many days of rain. Our hot dry summers seem to last months, beautiful days stretching into warm, balmy evenings spent out doors with barbecues, beers and dipping in the pool to cool off. How wonderful, idyllic many would call it, yet even then on a regular

50 The Grapevine

basis we can't resist a weather moan. Shouts of, “Oh it's too hot, I cant sleep" or “I'm sweating, feel the back of my neck" are heard all over, people everywhere are praying for cooler days and rain because “we need it for the plants". Well we do need it for the plants and eventually it arrives. Let me tell you, if you have never experienced a rainy day in Spain you are in for a shock. Torrential barely covers it, when I say that it's like stepping out of your front door to find a bloke with a hose pipe spraying directly at you, I'm not exaggerating. So, then we're happy right? Wrong! “We wanted rain, but not this" and “Nothings dry, everything feels damp" then become the whinges of the week! Now there's one other thing that is a reliable certainty, you can bet your bottom dollar that with a bit of rain and a bit of sun our gardens will now be veritable jungles. There's every chance that on closer inspection you may find Sting and his wife fighting to protect an indigenous tribe that moved in and evolved some time over the winter.

Bushes and trees are taking over, weeds are as tall as trees and our once clear pathways and uninterrupted views are now a thing of the past. Here at Pete's Maintenance Services we are fully prepared to go into battle on your behalf. Our family run business has all the tools, equipment and know-how to tackle every job, either as a one off or on a more regular basis. With almost 11 years experience of working in Mediterranean gardens, we are prepared and qualified for anything. Our fully legal work force can care for your gardens and pools, we even have specialist paint spraying equipment to give your internal and external paintwork a fresh, new facelift. If you would like a free, no obligation quotation, please give us a call on 622776643, alternatively email samnpete@live.co.uk we'll be happy to help restore your garden to its former glory. Sorry about that Sting! .

CELEBRATING FREEDOM!

Visit Bodega Bentomiz

W

ow, what a few months we've had! The Covid19 pandemic and the responses across the world were unprecedented. It'll be far more than a note in history books. For those who experienced Spain's lockdown, one of the strictest in Europe, it will be unforgettable. Now, as we finally begin to open our doors, see friends and family, and go out once more, we have a new perspective on life and liberty and, for anyone in Málaga, the tremendous privileges we can enjoy here. From the beauty of the landscape and the wonderful open-minded culture, to the hot summer days and cool nights, to the delights of the Mediterranean cuisine – our access to these things should be appreciated – celebrated – as we start enjoying freedom once again. At Bodegas Bentomiz we hope our guests will do just that by joining our gourmet lunches in one of the most beautiful locations in the province. Bodegas Bentomiz is the winery situated near Sayalonga; it

66 The Grapevine

is just off the main road between the Cruce de Árchez and Sayalonga pueblo. In fact, to judge from the accolades and prizes our wines have won, it is one of the best wineries in Andalusia, and perhaps beyond. And we also have a wine-centred restaurant. Reopening to serve lunches at two o'clock from Wednesday to Sunday, we are doing everything to ensure that people can come with complete peace of mind. This includes distancing measures so each party has their own space, expanded cleaning and sterilization routines, masks and gloves for staff, access to hand gel sanitizer for all, and more. We have extended the shading on our terrace to enable correct spacing for guests enjoying eating there. Indeed, whether you are in the light and spacious salon or outside beside the herb garden, our preparations will mean you can relax with completely peace of mind. You'll be able to focus instead on enjoying the gourmet food we serve. André has prepared new menus, with dishes that will be freshly prepared, mainly from local and, where possible, organic

ingredients. Each dish is designed to pair perfectly with one of our prize-winning Ariyanas wines, whether it is our rosé made from the rare local Romé grape (indigenous to the Axarquía, but little know), our spectacular dry Moscatel, with its delicious nose, perfectly balanced acidity and long finish, our blended red, which complements savoury dishes beautifully, or one of our dessert wines, with their perfect balance of sweetness and freshness. In recent years we have, in collaboration with Scottish winemaker Pamela Geddes of Lobban wines, expanded our range to make two wonderful sparkling wines. These combine excellent base wines from the Penédes with, as the “licor de expidación” our moscatel dessert wines. The resulting LobbanBentomiz are delicious brut sparkling wines. They are only available from Bodegas Bentomiz, but nothing could be more enjoyable than to taste them while enjoying a meal with us. Now that is something to celebrate!

THE NISPERO FRUIT The Health Benefits

T

he loquat medlar or Nispero fruit is a tree native to China that’s prized for its sweet, citrus-like fruit. They are small, round fruits that grow in clusters. Their color varies from yellow to redorange, depending on the variety. Nispero fruit, seeds, and leaves are packed with powerful plant compounds and have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Recent research suggests that they may offer a variety of health benefits, including protection against some diseases. Here are 7 surprising health benefits of the Nisoero. 1. Some research suggests that loquats have powerful antiinflammatory properties. These potent anti-inflammatory effects are likely due to the NIsperos’ wide array of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

Step 1: Prepare Your Jars and Utensils Save your old jars and wash them and the tops in hot soapy water. It's nice to soak off the labels before hand—but I admit that, being a 'Rustic Cook', I never get around to soaking mine. Put the jar tops and the funnel into a pan, cover the tops with water and bring to the boil with the pan covered. This will sterilize them. I sterilise the jars in the microwave by pouring a little water into the bottom of each and microwaving on full for 3-4 minutes. If you don't have a microwave, you can put them into a traditional oven. It is important that your jars, lids and any other equipment are sterile; otherwise, moulds and bacteria will spoil the jam. Having said that, a little mould on the top of the jam is normal, and my great aunt used to just scrape it off. You can buy paper jam covers to pop on the top, but, again, I don't bother with this. So far, I haven't found that my jam has gone mouldy.

houses will still be bought and sold. Give us a vote of confidence by postponing, not cancelling. Most of us currently have no income. postponing gives us a future. Buy Gift Cards Inject some cash into a small business, right now. Buy a gift card, or ask for a credit note. If it can’t be used immediately, it will still be valid when life returns to normal. Or maybe gift it to someone who is ill to remind them that life will return to normal.

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES Help Local Businesses Survive In This Difficult Situation

A

ny film lovers reading this may recognise the formulaic start to a disaster movie; the main character is in the kitchen making tea, or dealing with the kids. In the background somebody on the radio or TV is on talking about an event far away, an earthquake or some unexplained illness in a far off country. The movie character is too busy to hear what is going on, but fast forward a few weeks, the event is now their reality and causing chaos. In the movie, the main character saves the world, In the real life version we’re going to have to save each other. What the disaster movie does not show is the day to day horror of unpaid rent, taxes and utility bills and job losses. The challenges of owning a small business are manifold, the government has postponed some of these payments, postponed, not cancelled. As we live under lockdown our worlds have effectively shrunk (albeit temporarily). We still need to buy food to eat and to buy medicines when necessary and under current circumstances most of us are doing so locally. I sincerely hope that by the time

76 The Grapevine

this article has been published the Covid-19 outbreak is under control and life has begun to return to normality. I also hope that people continue to support small shops and local suppliers rather than getting in their cars and buying from large, faceless companies, that rely on algorithms to remember what sausages you like, rather than a good chat. They have the resources to survive no matter what, the rest of us don’t. It would seem to me that Spain is in a very good position to do this. Fruit and vegetables are on the whole produced and sold locally – hence the welcome lack of lorries blocking the autovias – and I am sure many have noticed the abundance of patatas fritas (or crisps) in shops that have been made only kilometres away. This means the manufacturer is a small company making a living by supplying locally and employing local people. Now is the ideal to time to keep supporting those small businesses around us. Here’s a few ways you can help. Postpone, don’t cancel. Continue to make plans. This is (probably) not the end of the world. Restaurant meals will still be eaten, holidays will be taken,

Shop with small businesses online Small businesses make a major economic impact, they provide better customer service, provide greater access to product diversity and create a sense of community. I hope it will make you feel good So, I hope people continue to stay safe and strong during the lockdown and through whatever follows. These challenging times could actually benefit society. The siege mentality has already produced communal balcony singing in Italy, and in Spain the nightly round of applause for those on the front line of the fight against the spread of the virus. In Venice, the lack of visitors has seen the water begin run clear. Isolation has been only physical, friends and family have supported each other from afar. Social media has been hilarious. People have been brave, optimistic, funny and kind. My cousin messaged me to say that since the shutdown of professional sport he has been talking to a lovely lady called Donna. Donna is of course, his wife! Debbie Wilkes La Casa Bella

LET’S BE FRIENDS!

Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh of Viveros Florena, Cómpeta

L

et me clarify, let's be friends with weeds! We all know that a weed is just a plant in the wrong place but who defines what is the wrong place? And is it a beloved plant, a wildflower, a weed, a noxious weed or an invasive weed? Who sets these parameters? A weed is classed as a plant that causes economic losses or ecological damages, creates health problems for humans or animals or is just generally undesirable where it is growing. A noxious weed is a plant designated as injurious to public health, agriculture, recreation, property or wildlife. Once a weed is classified as noxious, authorities can take actions to destroy it and limit its spread. An invasive weed is one that persists and spreads widely in natural ecosystems outside the plants native range; these are often introductions from foreign countries. As such they often lack natural enemies to curtail their growth and spread. Many invasive weeds are also considered as noxious. It's certainly best to know your 'enemy' but keep in mind that of approximately 250,000 species of plants worldwide, only about 3% behave in a manner that would

make us call them weeds. Weeds aren't inherently bad; many stabilise the soil, provide important food sources and shelter to animals and insects and add organic matter to the ground they grow in. Some are even edible – here are just a few examples of edible weeds you will commonly find here: Portulaca oleracea, purslane, verdolaga. A creeping succulent with fleshy leaves that taste of cucumber. It can produce around 2,000,000 seeds per plant – hence its weed status. But imagine its possibilities as an edible plant. Plantago lagopus, plantain, lengua de perro. The young leaves of this plant are edible, raw, lightly steamed or stir-fried. They are also a good substitute for a dock leaf when you get too close to a stinging nettle. Amaranthus retroflexus, pigweed, moco de pavo. Amaranth is one of the oldest food crops in the world, highly prized in the Caribbean, India and South Africa. Use the leaves and flowers as a spinach substitute; they are stuffed with vitamins, minerals, protein and folic acid. The seeds have now found a trendy market, one of the superfoods with cult status because they are gluten-free. In

spite of this, if we see it in our gardens, we are likely to pull it out. Try leaving a patch, if not to crop, because it absorbs heavy metals in the soil. Stellaria media, chickweed, pamplina, hierba de gallina. When young, the leaves, stems and flowers can all be eaten either raw or very lightly cooked; it has a mild spinach-like flavour. Taraxacum officinale, the common dandelion, diente de leon is probably one of our most hated weeds and yet they are an important source of food for bees early in the season and there are a whole range of dandelion delicacies. Toss the young leaves in salads; the flowers are delicious fried, you can make pink dandelion wine and dandelion root coffee! They are rich in nutrients, proteins, vitamins A and C, calcium and iron. See what I mean, they have lots to offer us. I think that one of the main problems is that we don´t know our weeds, we can't identify with them! So I've been delightedly following the rise of plant graffiti in Europe. Because there is less foot traffic on our pavements recently, opportunistic plants are growing freely from cracks of paths and walls in towns and cities across Europe. Rebel botanists and plant lovers are chalking their names

next to them so that we can all recognise them. It's like when we learn that the guy up the road is called Fred Smith, we instantly feel friendlier towards him when he has a name. Equally, that lump of weed growing out of a crack, call it herb Robert and it becomes a friend. A recent poll showed that just 6% of 16 to 24 year olds could identify a wild violet. Yet 70% of those polled said they would like to be able to identify more wild flowers. These plant survivors may not seem important to us but they are absolutely essential to early pollinators, caterpillars, butterflies and, therefore, to us too. Their pollen and nectar is generally richer and produced in greater quantity than that of hybridised garden flowers. And, below ground, the roots create tiny microhabitats for many creatures such as woodlice, worms, spiders, slugs and snails and these feed birds and hedgehogs. As always, Nature is all-encompassing. The idea of writing up plant names in chalk started in France, where pesticide use in streets and parks has been banned since 2017, and in gardens from 2019. The movement is spreading across Europe and even school kids are

being encouraged to – and loving – naming all the plants. Who couldn´t love names like rosebay willowherb, creeping buttercup, poppies, self-heal, ragwort, cat's ear and even viper's bugloss – each has a story to tell. Viper's bugloss, for instance, is botanically echium vulgare. Most in-the-know gardeners love to have echiums in their gardens, yet this one, which is common enough, is spurned. Look at it closely, it's a beautiful plant with its electrifying sapphire blue flowers with magenta throats. It probably got its name from its spotted stem which resemble snake markings and bugloss from the Greek meaning ox's tongue, in reference to the tongue-shaped leaves. Botanical chalking is catching on, it's an instant fix with nature. It grounds us, educates us and connects us with another world that we all need. It's spreading to trees too, lovely idea, because how often can we identify a tree? Our streets don´t have to be sanitised and sterile. For us lucky campo dwellers, the weeds/wild flowers are looking beautiful at the moment and we're lucky to have them so don't be too quick to strim them down; let the flowers finish, spread their seeds and, then,

when their lives are coming to an end, is the time to strim so that the browned foliage doesn´t become a summer fire risk. Urban or campo, it's up to us to protect our weeds! If you like the idea of botanical graffiti, as far as I know, in Spain and most of Europe you can chalk on pavements. In England – I was really surprised to read – you cannot. You need a license to chalk on paths or walls! So no more games of hopscotch or pavement art. Seems a nonsensical bit of bureaucracy to me, given that the first shower of rain is going to wash it all away anyway! We really hope that Viveros Florena will be re-opened by the time your Grapevine hits the streets – it's been a long time! As I write, it's pouring down and doesn't feel very spring-like or summer-like. Nevertheless, and because summer will probably arrive with a bang, from 2nd June we will be changing to summer hours which are 9am till 2pm.

THINGS TO DO IN MALAGA Be a Tourist For The Day or Weekend! 1. Gibralfaro Castle, the Alcazaba and Roman Theatre One of the main tourist attractions in Malaga is this complex of historic buildings. The view from the fourteenth century walls of Gibralfaro Castle offers up a stunning introduction to the city skyline. From here walk along the wall that connects the castle with the gardens, fountains and beautiful courtyard of the Alcazaba. Not only is it a great sunset stop, but a lovely place for a Sunday afternoon stroll, as after 2pm admission is free (other times it’s €5.50 for both monuments). 2 The Malaga Cathedral The cathedral is one of the best places to visit in Malaga. It’s one of the tallest in Andalucia, you can see it from far away! Construction work started in the 16th century, on the foundations of the city’s old mosque. Construction lasted for 200 years, and got suddenly halted because of a lack of funding. As a result, the cathedral was never completely finished, and has only one bell tower (whereas 2 were planned to be build). Locals even call it “La Manquita” (meaning the armless one). You can climb the 200 steps

to go up the 87 meters high tower: you’ll be able to enjoy a 360° scenic view over the whole city, the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro castle. Don’t miss out on the interiors either to see the decorated ceiling, the beautiful stained-glass windows, the chapels or even the 4000 pipes organ. 3 Museums to visit in Malaga You may not know about it, but there are a lot of museums in Malaga. Actually, with almost 30 museums, the city has proudly become the cultural capital of Andalucia. Here is a list of museums to visit during your trip to Malaga (depending on your tastes and interests): Picasso Birthplace Museum where he was born in 1881. You’ll learn more about his life and will see some of his personal belongings on display. !Picasso Museum with more than 200 artworks from the artist !Carmen Thyssen Museum with its extensive collection of Spanish and Andalusian paintings. !Pompidou Centre Malaga, is a branch of the famous Pompidou

Centre in Paris !Russian Art Museum offers a collection of Russian art pieces in an old tobacco factory !Museo de Malaga with an archaeology section, a Moorish section and a Spanish paintings section. !Flamenco Art Museum dedicated to the traditional Spanish dance. !Museum of Glass and Crystal to see the private collection of an Andalusian aristocrat !Malaga Centre for Contemporary Art dedicated to 20th and 21th century art !Automobile Museum Malaga and its 85 perfectly renovated vintage cars. !National Museum of Airports and Air Transport !Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions

4 The Port Málaga’s capacious port is the oldest continually operated port in Spain and has undergone a stunning modernisation in recent years with the addition of the ‘Palm Garden of Surprises’. The promenade is now lined with gardens, sculptures and bars with fabulous outside seating areas, making it a lovely space for an

early evening stroll or to watch the enormous cruise ships coming and going. At the far end, near Málaga’s historical bullring, the Paseo del Muelle Uno is another lively thoroughfare, packed with bars and restaurants, that leads to the Malagueta beach. No other port in southern Spain has been turned into such a pleasurable place to visit, so put it high up on your itinerary when visiting Málaga. 5 El Pedregalejo Málaga boasts as many as 15 different beaches, with each location more enchanting than the previous one. One of the most stunning places among them is El Pedregalejo, located about 30 minutes walk from the town center. It is considered one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in the city and offers a wide range of excellent restaurants. The nightlife at Pedregelejo is particularly renowned due to its numerous bars, making it a spot for every time of the day. The beach itself is 1.2km long and is the ideal place for a relaxed day and a refreshing splash in the sea.

6 La Concepión Botanic Garden Málaga’s botanic garden is spread out over 25,000 square meters and was constructed in 1850 by the aristocratic couple, Jorge Loring Oyarzábal and Amalia Heredia Livermore. It is located outside of the city centre and can be reached by bus within half an hour. The park boasts more than 2000 different plant species from Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Oceania, as well as a huge variety of bird species. The garden successfully combines formal gardens with more tropical gardens, which immediately enchant the visitor and draw them ever deeper into its green jungles. 7 Soho neighbourhood Go for a walk in Soho district! Once a decaying neighborhood, it has been totally transformed and renovated by street artists. Some buildings and facades are today completely covered with street art, the biggest painting being a few stories tall! The area is also called the art district. Most art works are located close to the Contemporary Art Centre of

Malaga, along the banks of the Guadalmedina river and in nearby streets. Wandering in this part of the town is really pleasant. In this neighbourhood you’ll also find handicraft shops, art galleries, restaurants serving world cuisine and a few trendy bars. 8. Montes de Malaga Montes de Malaga Natural Park During your stay in Malaga, you should really go to Montes Natural Park. It’s really the perfect place to enjoy some fresh air not too far from the city! Considered as “Malaga’s green lung”, it’s located about 25km up North from the city center. The park is 5000 hectares wide, with marked paths for hiking. Most of the hiking paths suit all levels and are not very long, so you can easily combine a few during a day.
