Editors Note... Last month we spent the evening in Malaga. Although we have some brilliant restaurants where we live it is great to get out of the village. Friends had the kids for the afternoon and over night so we didn’t want to go too far afield thus we chose to stay in Malaga. It is often too easy to get stuck in a routine and not get out and explore the great place where we live. Malaga has a lot going for it, with plenty of museums to visit, the cathedral and castle to walk around not to mention the abundant supply of fab tapas bars. On previous visits to Malaga we have always gone for the tapas option either in the port or around Calle Larios. This time we stumbled across a really lovely and ambient restaurant just off Plaza Meced called Meson de Cervantes. Later we found out this had great reviews on the internet and now I understand why. The food was tasty and different; the staffs were polite and efficient. We were really lucky to get a table as it was so busy therfore I would definitely advise booking. Our Malaga experience was great and we are looking forward to going back again and maybe taking the kids to the aquarium or car museum.

Correa is alleged to have amassed a personal fortune of €25 million (£20.1 million) in undeclared bank accounts over the 13 years he ran the illegal network, when he is accused of taking money from building firms that received contracts from PP run administrations. He is alleged to have distributed “gifts” including boxes of Havana cigars worth 450€ each, plasma television screens with a value of €6,000 each, and to have picked up the tab for a luxury safari in Kenya for

ome and join us for Competa's ninth annual Walk for Life on Sunday, 01 June, 2014 The idea first started in 2006 after talking to friends who had also lost family and friends to cancer. A couple of us were planning to fly back to the UK to participate in “Race for Life” in aid of Cancer Research UK but decided we preferred to do a local fundraising event in Spain. “Race for Life” started in 1994 with just one race in Battersea Park, London. It is now one of the UK's largest fundraising events and this year has 300 events across the UK. During the twenty years, over six million people have participated and raised over £493 million. Although my Competa “ Walk for Life” is not on the scale of “Race

for Life” – we have grown year on year starting with 12 to over 60 walkers in 2013, having raised over 29,000 euros for Cudeca Cancer Care. Cudeca Cancer Care is a charitable organisation that provides palliative care to the terminally ill cancer sufferers within the province of Malaga. It is made up of a team of specialist doctor and nurses who provide care and attention to those who need it with support to the family during treatment and after the loss of a loved one. This care is completely free of charge for all their services; the In-patient Hospice and Day Care Centre in Benalmadena or the home visits within Malaga province. Cudeca receives very little public funding, instead they entirely depend on initiatives for raising money to ensure they can continue to provide the “special kind of caring”

LAS FALLAS The best firework festival

In the middle of the Mediterranean coast, Valencia city, celebrates each year the final days of the winter and the arrival of spring with spectacular fires and pyrotechnics. From March 15 to 19 (the feast of Saint Joseph, day of the father in the whole country), Valencia is given over to a carnival of bonfires, fiesta, fireworks and a healthy dose of satire known as Las Fallas, the fires

Every day at 2pm firecrackers rip through the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in an noisy event called la Mascleta. This concert of gunpowder is very popular and involves different neighbourhood groups competing for the most impressive volley, ending with the terremoto, (literally means "earthquake").

Displayed on every corner all over the city are colourful ninots, giant papier-mâché figures often 20 feet tall or even more that have been paraded through the streets and then placed in fantasy groups to tower over excited spectators. Each one in

Another important event is the Ofrenda de Flores a la Virgen de los Desamparados, a beautiful ceremony every March 17 and 18, that honours Valencia's patron Virgin. Thousands of Falleras and Falleros arrive to the city from every corner of the Comunitat (Valencia State) and

take the streets wearing traditional costumes and dancing to their neighbourhood or village bands as they wend their way to the Plaza de la Virgen to offer bouquets to the giant image of the Virgin. Historians say that the origins of the festival go back to the time when carpenters cleared out their workshops and talleres at the end of winter, throwing out odds and ends of wood and old candles and lighting them on the street the day of Saint Joseph. Nowadays, celebrations draw to an end with a fabulous firework display in the Paseo de la Alameda, called the Nit del Foc (literally "The Night of Fire"), on March 18. All Fallas burn all over the city (including the winner of the competition) in a tremendous spectacle of fire and joy. Valencia is at that moment like Nero's Rome, a city in flames. That's why Valencians call this the best firework fiesta in the world! Don´t miss it!

Bill Gates, Carlos Slim, Warren Buffett, Larry Ellison. These are some names one tends to associate with the richest people on the planet. How about Amancio Ortega? That sounds like a name more likely associated with a cheap brand of canned chili. But you may be surprised to learn that not only is Spanish business tycoon Amancio Ortega the most powerful and successful fashion mogul of all time, he's also the third richest person on the planet. Pretty incredible considering most people couldn't pick his face out of a lineup and may not have ever even heard his name! As crazy as it may sound, Amancio Ortega is by far and away the world's most successful and powerful fashion mogul. Perhaps you've never heard of Amancio, but there's a very good chance you've purchased something from Zara, the global retail conglomerate he founded and controls. Despite his overwhelming power and wealth, Amancio has managed to live almost entirely outside of the public eye. He has rarely been photographed and amazingly, has only given three interviews in his entire life! The youngest of four children, Ortega was born in 1936 in a tiny town in northwestern Spain to a railroad employee father and housemaid mother. When he was a teenager, Ortega's family moved to the port city of A Coruña, in the autonomous nationality of Galicia, where he found a job working in the shop of a local shirtmaker. In 1972, Ortega took advantage of the economic environment in Galicia, where most men worked at sea while their wives — many of them skillful seamstresses — did what they could back home. Ortega organized thousands of these women into sewing co-ops to produce quilted bathrobes for his company, GOA. Three years later, with money saved up from the bathrobe business, Ortega opened his first Zara store in A Coruña, not far from the shop where he used to fold shirts.

And rather than spend any money on advertising, Zara reinvests in itself by opening new stores. Today, there are nearly 1,800 retail outlets in some 70 countries worldwide. It has become the flagship chain store of the multinational holding company Inditex, founded by Ortega in 1985, which is made up of nearly 100 smaller companies related to textile design, production, distribution, and retail, including other brands like Zara Home, Bershka, Stradivarius, Massimo Dutti, and Oysho. Inditex operates over 6,000 stores on five continents and is the biggest fashion retailer in the world, ahead of even the Gap. In all, it makes about 840 million garments a year. Perhaps the most fascinating detail of the Zara story, though, is Ortega's seemingly complete shunning of the spotlight and the spoils of fabulous wealth. The man is so notoriously reclusive, no picture of him had ever been published until 1999. He reportedly lives in a discreet A Coruña seaside house, without any personal security, with his second wife. He drives a comfortable Audi A8 and, due to fear of flying, rarely makes use of his private jet, a $45-million Global Express BD-700. Ortega is a man of habit who wears the same modest outfit nearly every day— blue blazer, open-necked white shirt and gray pants. All non-Zara products. Amazingly, instead of eating catered meals prepared by private chefs, Amancio eats lunch in the Zara company cafeteria alongside blue collar employees. Outside of the "fast fashion" empire he's built, Ortega's also made smart moves in real estate. He owns the tallest skyscraper in Spain, Madrid's Torre Picasso, as well as the Epic Residences & Hotel in Miami, to name a few. In 2011, Ortega announced a soft retirement from Inditex (the umbrella holding company that controls his empire), handing over day-to-day operations to CEO Pablo Isla. Still, at age 77, Ortega reportedly retains an active role and a 59-percent stake in the company. As for successors, it is widely rumored that his daughter, Marta, will one day take over her father's empire. Amancio Ortega may never become a cultural icon like Ralph Lauren, or Garavani Valentino, despite being vastly wealthier than either man or the rest of his contemporaries. He also may never attract the international headlines and attention of his fellow multibillionaires like Bill Gates and Carlos Slim. But judging by the way Ortega's conducted his life and business, that's perfectly fine with him.

Carnival 2014, 27 Feb - 9 March! Party Time, the Fiesta of the people!

Most Andalucian towns stage some kind of parade, and there is usually a dance and a "Carnival Queen" contest.

example, is a major event. This town is most famous for its "Comparsas" singing groups and many of them also participate in the big provincial contest held at the Teatro Falla in Cádiz. As in other places, everyone dresses up for the festivals and there is a parade on the last day. Rota, San Fernando, Chiclana, Algeciras, Medina-Sidonia and Trebujena all have lavish carnivals. Isla Cristina and Ayamonte, are also famous for their elaborate costumes and excitement, drawing visitors from throughout the region and the other side of the Portuguese border as well. CÓRDOBA The city of Córdoba has a recipe all of its own when it comes to the carnival. Whereas it is common to elect a King and Queen of the carnival, in Córdoba history it is honoured with the selection of a Sultan and a Sultana. If you are a fan of carnival celebrations, this is definitely one corner of Andalucia worth exploring this time of year. JAEN The City of Jaen organises a full calendar of carnival events. This is a carnival with six centuries of history behind it with a man named Condestable Iranzo credited with founding the events in this part of Andalucia. As in other areas, it was prohibited for many years during Franco's rule of Spain, but today the Jaen Carnival is going strong. The carnival in Jaen capital tends take place close to Shrove Tuesday while those in the provincial towns and villages area often scheduled quite a bit after that day. If you wish to take part in Jaen carnivals, start checking in January with the culture departments of the town halls you wish to visit. GRANADA The Granada Carnival, along with

those of the provincial towns, are among the least publicised, but they do take place. The festival usually lasts about a week in the provincial capital and starts well after Shrove Tuesday. It includes the usual singing contests that are held in theatres and other venues. There is also plenty of activity in the streets of Granada (a city that is famous for its "tapa" appetisers that accompany drinks at no extra charge), including a parade. HUELVA The Huelva carnival is one of the biggest in Andalucia and is known as the Columbian Carnival, in honour of Christopher Columbus, who sailed from Huelva to discover the New World. The Huelva carnival closed down during Franco's prohibition and it took a few years to start it up again, even after democracy overtook the country. It was not, therefore, until 1983 that this carnival restarted after a long sleep. The Huelva Federation of Clubs and Carnival Associations (Federación Onubense de Peñas y Asociaciones de Carnaval (FOPAC) is responsable for organizing this exciting event for the capital of Huelva, which - like Cádiz - hosts a major contest for all the different genres of carnival singers. The Huelva carnival singing contest has been known to attract up to 70 different groups from Huelva, Cádiz and the rest of Andalucia. MÁLAGA From 1937 to 1977, the people of Málaga kept their costumes packed away and refrained from meeting to practice and enjoy the old carnival tunes together much less organise any traditional parades or other celebrations. This was due to the prohibition issued by Franco and strictly enforced in this area.

In 1978 with democracy a spanking new concept in Spain, the people of Málaga took back their carnival, dusting off old sheet music, putting together dashing new costumes and asking the old timers to help them remember how their traditional carnival was celebrated before the prohibition. Today this festival is stronger than ever, with a special foundation dedicated to organising and promoting the event. There are numerous musical activities as well as special events for children, costume contests, a parade and, of course, fireworks to send the carnival out with a bang. The Málaga carnival calendar usually begins about a month before Shrove Tuesday and spreads performances out over the whole four week period with events heating up as they near the actual carnival dates. SEVILLE The city of Seville is known to dedicate February to carnival celebrations with all the usual song and dance performances. A well known savings bank always brings in the top performing Carnival singing group from the Cádiz festival for a special performance. There is also a children's carnival that can be scheduled on the weekends for up to a whole month. The town of Pedrera in Seville province is known for its carnival with the entire village dressing up on Ash Wednesday for the traditional "burial of the sardine". Other Seville province towns known for their carnival celebrations are: Alcalá de Guadaíra, Carmona, Coria del Rio, Dos Hermanas, Fuentes de Andalucía and Gines. Source andalucia.com

ACTION FOR ANIMALS Can you offer a New Home?

o, first the good news. Little Pancho, who I wrote about in last month's Grapevine, has found his forever home! A new family, who have just arrived in Cómpeta, fell in love with him at first sight while he was in our charity shop and decided to offer him the loving home he deserves after such a dreadful start in life. A huge thanks to them for giving this little pup a new start. Sadly, there's more. Angus was found abandoned outside a house in Canillas de Albaida last month. He's currently being fostered by Kim and Phil Simmonds, but is in desperate need of a new home. Angus is 33cms tall, weighs 6kg and already has a passport. He's affectionate, well behaved and house trained. Can you offer this sweet boy a new home? Another lovely pup, Sasha, was also abandoned in Cómpeta and is being fostered by Lynn and Tim Gallon, who already have several rescue dogs and simply can't keep her. She's about 5 months old and has a lovely gentle nature. Can you open your heart and your home to Sasha?

More recently, we learnt of a litter of German Shepherd dogs, recently born in Cómpeta, which urgently need homes. Tony and Julie Loughlan have expertly managed to find a home for one of them, but the rest of the litter still need new owners. Please contact Nina if you can help any of these animals. Remember, if you adopt an animal via Action for Animals we can help towards the initial vets bills and neutering operations, if necessary. Last month was a busy month for us. Together with the associated costs of what seemed like a never-ending stream of abandoned puppies, we managed to run up a vets' bill in excess of €2000 with various animals needing our urgent help. Apart from the usual numerous neutering operations for cats and dogs which we either paid for in full or subsidised, and the food bills and routine health maintenance for the feral cats, we were also called upon to help two rescue dogs who were in a very bad way. One of them, Chica, had been viciously attacked by another dog and received

extensive injuries which required immediate attention. The wonderful team at Naturvets came to the rescue and skilfully managed to save her. The second dog, Duma, managed to incur an enormous gaping wound on her back, after managing to trap herself in wire fencing. The Naturvets team worked hard to successfully stitch her back together and she is now recovering nicely. A huge thanks to Juan, Gunila and Lisa! I'd like to end this month's piece by saying a massive thank you to everyone who shops with us and donates to us. We can't continue our work without your ongoing support. Thank you! SALMOREJO-STYLE TOMATO SOUP A recipe from José Pizarro

rich, thick and creamy chilled bread soup made without water, which relies on the juice from fresh tomatoes. It is usually garnished with Serrano ham, which I crisp up, and chopped hard-boiled eggs. Salmorejo is typically found in Córdoba, but is enjoyed throughout Spain. Serves 6-8 country-style bread slightly stale with crusts removed 340g (crustless weight) vine-ripened tomatoes ripe and juicy, skinned, 1kg garlic 3 cloves, crushed pinch of sugar if your tomatoes need it olive oil 150ml, plus extra to serve sherry vinegar 2 tbsp eggs 2, large Serrano ham 6-8 thin slices

olives good-quality green or black pitted and quartered lengthways 50g sea salt Break the bread into a bowl and sprinkle with 250ml water. Leave to soak for at least 30 minutes. Meanwhile, quarter the tomatoes and scoop out the seeds into a sieve set over another bowl. Roughly chop the flesh and rub the juices from the seeds through the sieve. Discard the seeds. Put the tomato flesh and juices, garlic and sugar (if using) into a liquidiser and blend until smooth. Squeeze as much water as you can from the bread, add the bread to the liquidiser and blend again. With the motor still running, pour in 150ml of the oil, the vinegar and 1½ tsp salt. The mixture should be thick but not stiff. Pour into a bowl, cover and

chill for at least 2 hours. Chill 4 small soup bowls. Shortly before serving, lower the eggs into a pan of boiling water and cook for 9 minutes. Drain, cover with cold water and, when they are cold, peel off the shells and roughly chop the eggs into small pieces. Heat the remaining tbsp of oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add 2 slices of ham side by side and fry for about 30 seconds on each side until crisp and lightly golden. Lift on to kitchen paper to drain and cool. Repeat with the remaining ham. Once it is cold, crumble into small pieces. To serve, spoon the soup into the chilled bowls and garnish with the chopped egg, crisp ham and olives. Drizzle over a little more olive oil and serve straight away.

re you a list person? Whilst not fanatical about it, I admit I am and my longest runner is a wish list of plants I´d like to be able to offer for sale. I often add plants to that list but it´s rare that I am able to remove many and so it grows and grows! The plants on it are not botanical curiosities, as you might think, but good solid Mediterranean-garden-type plants. You might wonder why I don´t just buy them if they´re so good – I wish, hence a wish list.

Over the years, I´ve slowly managed to persuade some growers to give a plant a try. I remember when plants such as thunbergia grandiflora, phaserolus caracalla, hardenbergia violacea, melianthus major, alogyne huegelii, convolvulus cneorum and sabatius were on no-one´s listings but now I can get hold of them, though with some difficulty. But now especially many are feeling that now is perhaps not a time to be experimental, safer to stick to the ´old and trusted´. So I´ve gone another route and we are going to start bringing in plug

plants from Northern Europe for greater selection – and plug, of course, because they´re cheaper to transport. We´ll be offering them to you, for a brief period, as plug plants – ideal for bulk planting because the cost is low and plants establish quickly in their new home. And then we can grow them on under our own conditions instead of as hothouse plants. So, after all these years, you might wonder which plants are at the top of my wish list, which are the most important to source. Well, of course, as a

MANCHEGO CHEESE The Cheese of Don Quixote

anchego cheese is the most important and well-known sheepâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s milk cheese in Spain. The shape of this cheese is very characteristic and defined, due to the traditional use of esparto grass molds which imprints a zigzag pattern along the side of the cheese. The small wooden boards used for pressing the cheese also imprints the typical wheat ear pattern on the top and bottom. This rustic molds are used outside of La Mancha as well. Thus, there are other Spanish sheep's milk cheese with similar shape and markings, known commonly as "Manchego style" cheese. The true Manchego cheese, however, is made only from whole

milk of the Manchega sheep raised in the "La Mancha" region. This region is a vast high plateau, more than 600 meters above sea level, which extends from east to west and north to south, adjoining the provinces of Toledo, Cuenca, Ciudad Real and Albacete, all in the Castile-La Mancha Autonomous Region southeast of Madrid. Manchego cheese has a long historic and literary tradition, as it was mentioned by Cervantes in the legendary "Don Quixote of La Mancha". Today, there are two types of Manchego cheese: the farmhouse type, made with unpasteurized sheep's milk and the industrial type, made with pasteurized milk. In both cases, however, milk from

Manchega sheep is the only type used and the cheese is produced in clearly defined homogenous surroundings of wheat fields, fallow land and brush fields. The climate is extreme continental with cold winters and hot summers. Origin: Region of La Mancha (Castilla- La Mancha). Article #4 of the Denomination of Origin Ruling defines the area where Manchego cheese can be produced, within the provinces of Toledo, Ciudad Real, Cuenca y Albacete. Characteristics. La Mancha is a region with a long live-stock breeding tradition. Wool and animal bones have been found in some archeological sites, as well as different utensils used to produce cheese as early as

II century BC. Early Roman historians wrote about the live-stock farming in the peninsula, especially in "Acampo Espartario", the name given by Romans to the region of La Mancha. Muslims habited the area from VIII to XI centuries. They called it "Manyá", meaning "land without water". With time the name would transform into "Mangla" or "Mancla", and finally "Mancha" around the XIII century. La Mancha is high plateau, of about 650 to 800 m. in height (2000 feet) and an area of more than 35000 Sq Km. (13500 sq miles). It is made of flat lands and hills with an extreme continental climate, with cold winters and long dry summers, scarce rainfall, and large daily temperature changes. For a long time this area was in dispute between Southern Muslims and Northern Christians, who fought for the control of the pastures. These fights were the origin of the "mestas", itinerant stock-farmers that organized the displacements of the Christian herds protected by the Christian soldiers against the Muslim attacks. In the XII century King Alfonso VI conquered Toledo and forced the Muslims to retreat back to Andalucía. The lack of stability forced the legalization of the "Honrado Concejo de la Mesta" in 1273 by King Alfonso X 'the Wise' in order to organize the cooperation of the stock-farmers. In the XVII century farming advanced. The efficient use of the pastures forced the declining of the stock-farming and ended in the disappearance of the mesta in 1836. Advancement in farming forced the conversion of stockfarmes into both stock and land farmers, forcing the herds to become sedentary. As a result, the production of wool declined, and the live-stocking industry specialized in the production of meat and cheese. Cheese production was no longer

marginal, and the Manchega breed of sheep became instrumental in establishing cheese production techniques. In the late XIX and beginning of XX centuries the first studies on Manchego Cheese were published. During this century the increased specialization of the farms has made La Mancha the base of a powerful cheese industry. Manchego Cheese producers have artisanal techniques while still managing to have intense production. Manchego Cheese has been protected by the Denomination of Origin since 1984. The D.O. that stipulates the exclusive use of milk from Manchega sheep breed, as well as an aging period of a minimum of 60 days. Production process. Manchego is an aged cheese, from semi-cured to cured, made only with milk from Manchega sheep breed, unpasteurized or pasteurized. It is produced through an enzimatic coagulation. The paste is pressed and uncooked. The base milk has to have a minimum of 6% fat. The milk coagulates at 28 to 32 º C (82 a 89 ºF) after adding animal curd. Occasionally lactic ferments and calcium salts are also added. This results in a compact curdle within 45 to 60 minutes. The curdle must then be cut to obtain lumps of 5 to 10 mm. (1/5" to 2/5"). The resulting lumpy paste is then slowly reheated to about 40ºC (104ºF) The liquid is removed and the dried paste put into moulds where it is pressed for several hours. The salting is external, and it is achieved either by rubbing with dry salt, by immersing the cheese in highly salted water, or by a combination of both methods. The percentage of the salt in the weight of the cheese can not be higher than 2.3% after two months of aging. The aging process must be done in fresh areas, with a humidity

level of 75 to 85%, for at least 60 days. The rind is closed, clean well engraved, of a yellow to a brownish beige colour. The interior is firm and compact, closed, with a few small air pockets unevenly spread. The colour is ivory to pale yellow. The taste is very characteristic, well developed, but not too strong, buttery and slightly piquant, with an sheep milk aftertaste. The shape is cylindrical, with flat top and bottom surfaces engraved with the typical "flower" left by the wooden presses. The sides show a zigzag pattern produced by the mat-weed (esparto) of the moulds. Today, industrially produced cheeses have the same engraving, predesigned in the new industrial moulds. While every cheeses weights between 2kg and 3.5kg, (4 to 8 lb) the average weight is 3kg (6.5 lb) Uses The intense taste and crumbly texture make it perfect to eat it as is, with a slice of bread. As the focal point of Antipasto, Manchego can be served with olives, sun-dried tomatoes, crusty bread and a robust red wine (Rioja) or a dry sherry (Fino). SUMMERTIME, AND THE LIVING IS EASY-ISH! When summer arrives so do the visitors!

ood news my fellow expats!!! We are moving at last, towards our favourite time of year and the main reason for most of us becoming 'ex-pats' in the first place. The days are getting longer, the evenings are getting lighter and we will soon be going inside our houses to cool down rather than outside to warm up. Yes, it's almost summertime. I don't know about you, but it's at this time of year that I start to get really excited about the wonderfully warm, lazy days of a Spanish summer. The thought of waking up each morning to find the sun already streaming through my bedroom window fills me with joy and an unnatural urge to get out of bed (something I've never experienced prior to living in Spain). The knowledge that my poor, neglected feet will once

again be given the attention they deserve in order to be presentable in sandals, having spent the winter months crammed into socks and boots. The guarantee that if I put out washing it will be dry and fresh smelling within half an hour, rather than the two days it takes during winter time, always assuming it stays on the line and doesn't get blown halfway down the mountain in the gales! I swear I saw a woman in Torrox Costa wearing a pair of trousers that had blown off my washing line, I didn't say anything obviously, I was however, safe in the knowledge that they had looked better on me! Rightly or wrongly, one of the things that gives me most pleasure during our lovely summer months is a pastime I like to call “Brit Baiting”. For those of you that don't have the

same intrinsic wicked streak as me, “Brit-Baiting” is the art of bragging to family and friends still living in the UK about the days we spend in the hot sun enjoying our pools. Those halcyon days we spend on the beach. The balmy evenings spent drinking cold beers in the Plaza. I admit I derive a fair amount of pleasure from boasting that I can arrange a barbecue with friends and guarantee that I won't have to move the whole darn lot into the garage whilst my guests look on in pity from under their umbrellas. There is also my personal favourite 'boast' of changing my Facebook status to read, “It's great when the water in my outdoor, unheated swimming pool is warmer than the weather in the UK” – oh boy, they love that one!! Now Newton's third law conveys, “For every action, there is an

equal and opposite reaction”, this basically tells us that we can't have the good without the bad and whilst I understand it is difficult for most of us to find something negative to say about the Spanish summer, there is one thing that at some time or another will concern us all, the scourge of the summer, one word folks..... Visitors! Visitors? I hear you questioning, yes visitors! Whilst the idea of our loved ones arriving from afar, hopefully bringing decent tea bags and chocolate, is a wonderful one. However, it must be remembered that adages such as, “House guests are like fish – after three days they start to stink” do not come about without containing some element of truth. That said, I do understand the urge we get to invite them, I do. Having ensconced themselves in my spare room and made use of my pool, they begin to gush furiously about how awe inspiring the scenery is and what an amazing lifestyle I have, during which I try to appear nonplussed and blasé about the whole thing whilst secretly feeling a little bit smug. Let us be honest, the concept of random relatives spewing forth flattering, envious comments about my home is not too much to endure. In my experience, the first evening will probably involve showing my visitors around our beautiful village and taking them for a meal which they can experience whilst sitting outside and waxing lyrical about my chosen lifestyle once again. It's always a boost when local Expats and Spanish friends wave as they pass by or better still, stop to chat, giving me the ideal opportunity to show how well I've mastered the language. Ok, so I know that my Spanish is

diabolical and I may have just informed the Spanish that your cat has two heads and no grandmothers, but hey.... it sounded good, my visitors don't know that and the situation lends itself nicely to more gushing praise. It is usual during these times to wake the next morning to find my house guests already prostrating themselves on sun beds or lilos, if I'm lucky they may have made the tea but I guarantee they won't have made breakfast – and this, my friends, is where it starts to go wrong..... To most people the word, 'Holiday' conjours up a vision of, room service, all-you-can-eat buffet style dining, all inclusive drink-what-you-like bar and that, is precisely the problem. Call me old-fashioned but you can't expect that at my house! You see I understand that these people are on holiday and of course, I want them to have a lovely time, but as for me, I'm NOT on holiday, wonderful as it seems to my guests, this is my life and it still carries on whether they are here or not. Prior to their arrival, I do attempt to impart to my visitors how things like, water, electricity, petrol etc are not cheap here and I do also make the suggestion that they hire a car to give them 'independence'. All this though, tends to fall on deaf ears or goes straight out of the window once they arrive. After all, why would they need a car, when I already have one? Now I'm not as much of a meanie as I might seem, I may cook the odd meal or arrange a barbecue for my guests, I will most certainly show them where they can find the tea, coffee and milk in the hope that they will take full advantage of these services (and make me one,

whist they're doing so). All very generous acts, in my opinion. As the days go on and my tongue gets sore from all the times I've had to bite it, I find myself wondering why people who are content to shower once a day in their homes in the UK, feel the need to shower twice, sometimes even three times a day in Spain where water is a valuable and expensive commodity. I had one house guest who insisted on showering (inside in the bathroom not outside by the pool) each time she had a swim, begging the questions, “What's all that about? And, “How much will my water bill be?” All too soon though, for them at least, I will be winding my way back to the airport, the sad but sunburnt faces of my visitors a glowing vision in the rear view mirror as I wheel spin out of the departures area shouting, “Thank you for coming” out of the window and muttering, “Thank you for going” under my breath. Arriving home again is a delight, it's quiet, there are no soggy towels strewn across the terrace and I am thoroughly content with the idea of having to make my own coffee. So I guess, it could be said that this is my penance for teasing my poor, deprived nearest and dearest about how brilliant it is here and how rubbish it is where they are, serves me right you might say. Well, if that's true then I deserve everything I get.... this year, it's two lots of visitors and by the way, I'm booking them private villas!! SAM BENSON

HISTORY OF CIRCUITO DE JEREZ Motor Racing in Jerez

erez has always had a close relationship with motorsport, specially with motorbikes. At the beginning of the 60's, Jerez was already organizing the international prestigious race called "Trofeo de la Merced" which attracted the top motorbike riders of that time. Spanish riders like Angel Nieto (13 times World Championship), Ricardo Tormo, Sito Pons, Benjamin Grau, VĂctor Palomo or international one like Marco Luchinelli, Barry Sheene, Jan de Vries, Borje Jansson competed in the streets of Jerez.The result of this long tradition with competition was, decades later, the construction of a permanent race track, with modern and full equipped facilities able to hold the most important motorsport events. The 80's Inaugurated in 1985, Circuito de Jerez quickly became one of the most famous tracks in Europe organizing Formula One, Sport

Prototypes and Motorcycles World Championships. Only with the works of the track finished (without pits, buildings or race control tower) Jerez organized the first race on the 8th of December 1985. It was a round of the Spanish Touring Racing Cars, having the leading role...the rain. Despite the great difficulties added by this, the event was held without any serious problems and confirmed what was expected, that Andalusia was ready to become the reference in the motorsport world.

Schumacher finished the race on the kerb, giving Villeneuve his first and only World Championship. He was also penalized by the FIA with the lost of all the Championship points. As for the motorbikes, 1997 was the year when Alex Criville won Michael Doohan in 500cc class to the enthusiasm of thousand of followers and receiving the trophy fromo the Spanish king himself. The new Millenium The safety demands related to pit-lane and track forced in 2002 the biggest remodeling in the history of the circuit. New pits, pitlane, main building, hospital, paddocks, run-off areas, some grandstands....and the construction of an amazing viewing platform just on the

start/finish line; beautiful new VIP suites overlooking the start line and a new media center with capacity for over 300 journalist. On the sporting side, 2002 also meant a decisive change for the Motorcycle World Championship. The 500cc class disappeared, giving way to a new one named MotoGP with four strokes engines instead of two. But the name of the Master of the class did not change....Valentino Rossi won the Jerez race and the championship with his Repsol Honda machine. Determined not to lose its remarkable international position, in 2008 Jerez made a large remodelling of the escape areas and a new tarmac was laid at the track. In fact, Jerez has never stopped developing its facilities and infrastructures to keep up to the top standards required by the international Federations and is, for this reason, one of the most demanding circuits in the world. 2014 shall bring out major projects which will boost even further the activity capacity of Circuito de Jerez.

he parents of a boy who lost both his testicles during an operation have been awarded no compensation by a jury. The boy, who was 11months-old at the time of the surgery, needed the operation to relocate his undescended testicles. Oregon Health & Science University hospital, in Portland, had written permission to complete the procedure using a specific technique which required two operations. But doctors chose to perform the surgery with a different technique under which would only need to operate once, arguing it was in the best interests of the boy. The parents said they believed the two-operation procedure carried the least risk of the boy losing his testicles and that's why they only gave written consent for that procedure. But the hospital's lawyer, Nikola Jones argued they'd given verbal consent, blaming the lack of paperwork on an untrained junior doctor failing to fill out the forms correctly. SAVE OUR HOMES AXARQUIA The members of Save Our Homes in Axarquia (SOHA) resolved to place greater emphasis on legal action given the lack of success that protesting and direct dialogue had achieved. Philip Smalley, Chairman of SOHA, said: “After seven years of fighting for our rights the problem seems to be getting worse not better.” “If the regional government (Junta de Andalucia) cannot listen to us face to face then perhaps they will listen in the courts,” he added. Now the pressure group will appoint a new fundraising chief in order to build a fighting fund big enough to take them to Strasbourg. Their resolution was taken during the SOHA annual general meeting held in La Viñuela. Centrepiece of the meeting was a speech by lawyer Gerardo Vazquez, who discussed the options for protecting their rights through the legal system. PLAN TO DEVELOP PLAYAZO BEACH A new plan to develop El Playazo beach has been passed in the last council meeting in Nerja. The project, which aims to boost the economy of the town, covers an area of more than 1 million square metres. It includes the widening of El Playazo beach to

up to 70 metres from the seashore, followed by a 30 metre strip to build a promenade The next 100 metres will be devoted to leisure facilities, beach bars and three public car parks. From there the project includes the building of hotels under the criterion of the Plan for Urban Development of the regional government. Also included are new green areas in the margins of the Chillar and Seco rivers, an extension of the Verano Azul parking area and three pedestrian accesses from the Chaparil area. The icing on the cake of this project will be transformation of the N340 road into an avenue lined with trees.
