Last month we had snow, gales and heavy rain. It has been one of the coldest winters I have experienced in the 11 years of living here in Spain. I am certainly looking forward to the warmer weather. (I think I might have said that last month!!!) Easter isn't far away and for the Spanish “Semana Santa” is a huge celebration and a week of deep rooted tradition, procession and fiestas. See pages 18 and 19 where we focus on one of the most ostentatious celebrations of them all in Seville. More locally we have the annual Artwalk in Competa 1,2,4,5th April which promises to be a great event. Other events over the next month or so include the “Day for Life”, see page 44 and The Easter Egg hunt for children at the Balcon Hotel, Competa. Also, in the world of politics, it is the local elections in May . Over the next couple of months there will be more information on those standing in the local area which might aid in your voting decision. Next month is our regular property feature however we will also be combining this with rentals and property management in time for the coming summer season. If you would like to advertise you properties or services in the next edition please do get in contact . This feature is open to Business & to individuals wishing to rent or sell their home privately. You can find all our contact details to the left of this page. Enjoy and keep reading

fewer-frills monarchy. A palace statement on Tuesday detailing the royal household's 2015 budget said Felipe, 47, would receive 234,204 euros (£174,000), a fifth less than his father and predecessor, Juan Carlos, received as monarch before abdicating last June. Juan Carlos, who retains his honorary title of king, will receive 187,356 euros. The palace budget, which has been frozen or cut since 2009 as Spain suffered hard economic times, remains unchanged in 2015 at 7.8 million euros. Felipe has striven to improve the monarchy's image, which has been tarnished by a number of scandals in recent years. In particular, his father was criticised for hunting elephant in Botswana at a time when ordinary Spaniards were suffering a severe economic crisis.

he granddaughter of Pablo Picasso has said she plans to privately sell off “one by one, based on need” some of her collection of more than 10,000 works by the artist to help fund her charity work. Marina Picasso’s plans to bypass traditional art market routes will send shivers down the spines of dealers and auction houses, though how much of an impact it will truly have on the art market depends on a key question. How much of her enormous collection – which includes 300 paintings along with thousands of drawings, etchings, and ceramics – does she intend to sell? Rumours emerged a month ago that Marina was aiming to sell seven important paintings which could be worth up to £200m. It was also reported that she was planning to sell her grandfather’s Cannes villa La Californie, where she lives. Howvere, last Month Marina broke her silence to deny the sale of La Californie.

sign of heightened tension between Madrid and the authorities on the Rock. Announcing the decision in parliament, the Spanish foreign minister pointed out that the main function of the Cervantes Institute global network was to teach the Spanish language. “And in Gibraltar, everyone speaks it except for the apes”, José Manuel García - Margallo quipped, referring to Barbary macaques on the Rock, which are Europe's only wild population of monkeys. It is now thought there are more than 200 of the animals. The minister, who has made a point of ramping up the rhetoric against Gibraltar’s status as a British Overseas Territory since the Popular Party (PP) came to power in late 2011, said the decision to “set up a Cervantes Institute in what is considered Spanish territory” was clearly absurd.

irginia Pérez Buendía, described by residents as a loner, has bequeathed her entire fortune to a fund which will provide grants to students from the village in the central CastileLa Mancha region in Spain. "We knew she had money; what no one knew is that she was going to leave it to the village," said one local woman. Local priest Arsenio Triguero explained that Pérez Buendía was a "bohemian lady" who never married or had children. She divided her time between a residence for the elderly, her Madrid flat and one of the houses she owned in Valverde de Júcar, where villagers say her only passions were animals and the farm she ran alone. In September she died aged 86 in her flat near the Prado museum, although, according to Mr Triguero, her body was not discovered for six weeks. ACTION FOR ANIMALS More Good News

T

his month we've got more happy news to share.

In last month's Grapevine we told you about Florence, who had been found pregnant and abandoned on the streets of Competa and had been fortunate enough to find a wonderful, new home. One of her pups had also been adopted, but two were still looking for their forever homes. We're so happy to report that both Florence's remaining pups have now been adopted and are doing splendidly with their lovely new owners, pictured here. We also wrote about Pixie, an abandoned podenco, who had been living outside and was desperately looking for a new home. Thankfully, Simon from Cómpeta came to the rescue and saved her before all the dreadful, cold weather began. Lucky Pixie!

8 The Grapevine

More recently, we found a sad, little kitty, hungry and cold, hiding under a car that was parked outside our charity shop. We managed to get some food to him, but he was very timid and refused to come out from beneath the car. Eventually, we coaxed him out and took him safely inside. After seeing our post about him on Facebook he was offered a fabulous new home via Gunhild Pederson, one of our local vets. Another happy ending! Our quiz night in January was an enormous success and raised an incredible 206€. We're very sad to say goodbye to Pat Kirkbright, who's been our quiz mistress from the very beginning, and we'd like to say a huge thanks to Pat for all her hard work and wish her a happy future in the UK. The quiz will now continue under the expert guidance of

Megan Furniss and our next one will be on March 20th at Bar Vendimia in Cómpeta. Please come along and support us. And finally, an important date for your diary. Our annual fun dog show “Scruffs” will take place this year on May 9th at The Pavo Real. It'll be lots of fun for all the family. Watch this space for more information. Ed Balls tweets his own name In 2011, the Labour Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls was shopping in Asda in Castleford for the ingredients for a 12-hour pulled pork BBQ when an aide suggested he search for an article on Twitter mentioning him. Rather than typing his name into the search bar, he typed it into the status bar and hit 'send'. The tweet was retweeted over 25,000 times, and received more than 10,000 'likes'.

BIGGEST TECHNOLOGY GAFFES OF THE 21ST CENTURY Google barge Google's ambitious plan to build floating technology showrooms in San Francisco Bay and Portland harbour hit the buffers when the Coast Guard determined the barges presented safety hazards. After racking up hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of property taxes, the project was scrapped, and the Portland vessel was dismantled. #Bendgate Following the launch of Apple's iPhone 6 Plus in 2014, some owners of the device reported that their handsets had bent in their pockets, leading to the hashtag #Bendgate trending on Twitter. Apple eventually responded, claiming that only nine people had reported the problem and, if used normally, a bend in the iPhone 6 was very rare. Satya Nadella says women shouldn't ask for pay rises Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sparked controversy last year after saying women do not need to ask for a pay raise but should instead put their faith in "karma". Mr Nadella later admitted his error in a memo to Microsoft employees, stating that men and women should get equal pay for equal work, and that anyone who thinks they deserve a raise should just ask.

Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook profile hacked Facebook founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg had his profile page hacked by an IT security researcher in 2013, after the social network ignored his warnings that a glitch in the site allowed anyone to post on a stranger’s wall. The researcher apologised for intruding on Mr Zuckerberg's privacy, but claimed he had no other choice. #Antennagate Within days of the launch of Apple's iPhone 4 in 2010, users were complaining that, when you gripped the phone in a certain way, it would lose signal and in some cases drop calls. Apple initially dismissed the issue, but later held a press conference about 'Antennagate', where it announced that everyone who wanted would get a free bumper case to resolve the issue. Google Buzz Google Buzz was a social networking, microblogging and messaging tool that was developed by Google and integrated into Gmail. The service was beset with privacy issues, due to a feature that gave users a ready-made circle of friends based on their most frequent email and chat contacts. The service was discontinued less than two years after launch.

MtGox loses 744,000 bitcoins The world’s largest bitcoin exchange suspended trading in February 2014, after rumours emerged that 744,000 BTC – six per cent of all the coins in circulation, worth around £251m at the time – had been stolen. MtGox ended up filing for bankruptcy protection, with outstanding debts of ¥6.5 billion. Facebook conducts secret psychological experiment on users Over 600,000 Facebook users unwittingly took part in a psychological experiment, whereby the social network altered the tone of users' news feeds to highlight either positive or negative posts from their friends, and then then monitored users' responses. The revelation resulted in a privacy backlash, and the company eventually admitted it had made mistakes. Sony Pictures Entertainment hacked Sony Pictures Entertainment was hacked in 2014 by a group calling themselves the Guardians of Peace. The hackers stole thousands of gigabytes of private data, including the scripts of five Hollywood films. Some reports suggested that North Korea was behind the attack, in retaliation for a film called The Interview, which depicted a CIA plot to assassinate Kim Jong-un. However, Pyongyang denied any involvement

xterior painting and decorating can be a real chore, many properties on the Costa del Sol due to the unpredictable and severe weather that is experienced at the end of the summer and beginning of spring have to be redecorated every 2 to 3 years. Also, due to poor building techniques, many properties suffer from black mould on the interior due to penetrating damp. Another annoying problem is the Sahara sand rain which gets deposited at least twice a year. In this modern day and age when there are many long life exterior

home improvements such as UPVC windows, doors, and shutters etc, which can last for 20 years or more, why can't the same technology be applied to exterior masonry coatings? Many people are unaware that there is a company called Andura based in Bicester Oxfordshire for over 40 years, who are a BSI registered company and many of their products come with the much coveted British Board of Agrement Certificates. No Need to Paint Costa del Sol are their exclusive agents. Their products are designed and proven to last in excess of 15 years to stop penetrating damp, still allow

FASTING ... HEALTH AND HAPPINESS By Jane Gudge

L

ent, the 6 weeks period of fasting beginning on Ash Wednesday, lasting through the Spring Equinox until Good Friday. . Interestingly every culture has a practice of fasting whether for reasons of self discipline, religion, improved health of mind and body or just for the times when food is short. Spring time could be as much as 6 weeks later than anticipated; for many animals this lack is sufficient for them to give up and starve to death. As a species we are unique in knowing that not eating for a month will do us no harm indeed and will manifest remarkable benefits upon our system. Almost everyone in the West eats far too much and far too often, add to that the poor nutritional quality of foods we so eagerly purchase from the supermarkets it might be worth contemplating quite how bad a state our bodies are in, and we can be sure that if

heal all ailments from diabetes to rheumatoid athritis and is anti aging!

Neither medicine nor food heal the body; it has been designed to, heal itself.

It might be an idea to contemplate how much our precious bodies and minds would love a spring clean.

Not eating triggers remarkable healing; thinking becomes clearer, sleep improves, liver, kidney and colon function efficiently, blood pressure normalises and energy increases. Yes! Perhaps 60% of our caloric intake is used to digest and process the food we eat, imagine how more efficiently our body mind and spirit will function when we get out of its way by not eating our ridiculously unhelpful grub. Great health means we should be full of boundless energy and enthusiasm, life should daily be a fabulous adventure, if not we are not in the best of health! Should we continue to feed we shall continue to sicken, fasting has been proven over millennia to

Although dramatic improvement is evident, we do not need to fast for 21 or 10 or 7 days; just 3 days fasting and resting over a long weekend will make us feel wonderful, indeed intermittent fasting has been proven to have a highly beneficial effect upon bodily functions; opting to fast for 36 hours once a week will improve our sleep pattern, keep the waistline in check and if done regularly during the year, our skin will be glowing, our energy level will be high furthermore cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure levels will be normalised, all by taking time out to rest and recuperate and what is more it doesn't cost a penny..it is called natural healing.

medieval robed and hooded figures, processing slowly behind swaying life-sized religious effigies, accompanied by the deep thud of drums and mournful wailing of trumpets. It might sound sinister, but Semana Santa (Holy Week) is an extraordinary, mesmerising experience and constitutes one of Spain’s largest festivals.

The ancient, sombre celebration of Christ’s last days, reveals a mystical side of this vibrant city, especially at dusk, when candles are lit, and the processions take on a haunting, timeless feel. Up to a million visitors flock to Seville for the spectacle; the late-night processions on Thursday (April 2), la Madruga’ are unmissable.

What is Semana Santa? Holy Week is a week-long celebration of pageantry, art, and raw emotion, as processions make their stately way from parish churches to the cathedral and back again. Nearly 70 cofradias (church brotherhoods, many dating from the 16th century) take part, each with their own muchadored Virgin Mary and Jesus statues, as well as colourful misterios (tableaux of bible scenes), on elaborately-decorated pasos (floats). Each cofradia has up to 3000 nazarenos (the robed, hooded figures; penitents carry crosses), taking as long as 90 minutes to file past. Nazarenos wear a hood, tunic and belt in their cofradia’s special colours. The capirotes (tall, pointed hoods with eyeholes) were designed so the faithful could repent in anonymity, without being recognised as selfconfessed sinners. What happens in the processions? Each day, between six and nine cofradias go out in procession, with the first starting at midday. The long line of hooded nazarenos, statues, and musicians slowly moves out of its parish church, led by a cross. As the wistful, flower-bedecked Virgin, resplendent in her goldemboidered mantle emerges, people shout “Guapa!” (Beautiful!) – it’s a moment charged with great emotion. Watch processions pass through their own district (San Bernardo, Macarena, Triana) – you’ll feel the intense affection, especially for the Maria effigies, akin to loyalty for football teams. Confetti and flower petals are thrown, and some passionate soul belts out a saeta, a haunting lament to the Holy Mother sung from a balcony. The cofradia joins the Official Route (see below) to arrive at the cathedral, and then begins the return journey back home. Some of the larger cofradias take an

exhausting 14 hours for the entire round trip. Key dates: the best Seville Semana Santa processions, and when and where to see them. Thursday 2 and Friday 3 April are national holidays: many monuments are closed those days, either in the afternoon or all day (most shops close in the afternoon all week). Be aware that if it rains, or even threatens to, processions are cancelled. Outfits are designed so that those repenting for their sins can conceal their identity. One of the few cofradias which passes through Maria Luisa Park is La Paz, on Palm Sunday (March 29); catch it at 2.30pm near Plaza de España. At 3pm La Hiniesta comes out through the narrow Gothic-arched entrance of its church in Plaza San Julian – an amazing sight, and a delicate, skilled manoeuvre. Look up, and you’ll see balconies decorated with palm leaves all around the city. In the old Jewish quarter, on Tuesday (March 31), see San Bernardo as dusk falls in Calle Mateas Gago at 8.30pm - a line of dark, shadowy silhouettes with tall red flickering candles; you’re back in the 16th century. La Sed passes through Plaza Encarnacion on Wednesday (April 1) at 5.30pm – the steps of contemporary architectural icon Metropol Parasol offer a great viewing point. On Thursday (April 2) Las Cigarerras crosses San Telmo bridge at 4pm, passing the Torre del Oro. Traditionally women wear black dresses with mantillas (lace veils) on Thursday. The climax of the week is La Madruga’, early Good Friday morning (April 3), when Seville’s two (rival) favourite Virgins, Triana and Macarena – you can see their

and taxi - make their muchanticipated appearances. Sleep in the afternoon, go out to dinner at 9pm, then grab a spot for one of these: La Macarena emerging from her Basilica at 12 midnight (look out for the Roman centurions, and the misterio paso with Pontius Pilate). El Silencio – the oldest hermandad, founded in 1340; hauntingly silent, with no street lights, at 1am in Plaza del Duque. Jesus del Gran Poder, with its gilt baroque Christ paso, in Plaza San Lorenzo at 1.30am. La Esperanza de Triana, icon of this riverside district, in Calle Pureza at 2.15am. El Cachorro, whose 17th-century dying Christ figure is a masterpiece, crosses Triana bridge at 5.30pm on Good Friday (April 3). You’ll see seats set up along the “Official Route”, from Calle Campana, along Calle Sierpes, in Plaza San Francisco, down Avenida de la Constitucion, to Plaza Virgen de los Reyes by the cathedral. These are all booked out months in advance, but Tour Cofrade (tourcofradesevilla.blogspot.co.uk) offers tours which include: visits to three churches whose pasos go out that day, and to a sculptor’s workshop; lunch; and a reserved seat in Plaza Virgen de los Reyes (where cofradias come out of the cathedral) until the last paso leaves (around midnight), for £71. Another option is to rent a balcony overlooking the route – away from the crowds, while still immersed in the atmosphere, and with a great view. mybalcony (mybalcony.com) offers balconies to rent for up to 12 people, some with food and drink included, from around £50 per person. COMPETA ARTWALK 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th April

W

elcome to Competa for the 7th village Artwalk, for four days during Semana Santa (1, 2, 4, 5 of April). The intention of this event is to offer, to all those who are interested in the world of art, an opportunity to meet with the diverse, international and multicultural artistic community of this "Pueblo blanco". Art will be shown at different locations in the centre. Competa is well known for its artistic and creative environment, it has an open, tolerant, friendly and welcoming culture which is the reason why you will find a wide range of artists, sculptors, writers and musicians, all looking for creative inspiration in this countryside at the foot of the mountains. We have examples of painting, photography, graphic art, drawings, stoneware pottery, ceramic art, bronze sculptures, turned wood and textiles. It will be a good time to meet artists and craftsmen, discuss their work, lives and inspirations. This year the event will be even more animated with live music in various venues in the centre of this beautiful authentic mountain village. If the weather is good you will enjoy stunning views of the mountains and the sea. There are also many great restaurants with good quality food, e.g. Spanish, Moroccan and international

cuisine, and cosy bars. .In the Andalusian village you'll find beautiful corners, alleyways, passages and typically Spanish "plaza's". Often you'll have a sense of walking through a painting, with it's picturesque Moorish architecture. If you're looking for good quality art work & craft work the Artwalk is not to be missed. But also for those who like to take home some typical local products, Competa offers a lot. Several artists will give a workshop for children so that they can 'experience' working creatively. Their works will be shown in the village during the Artwalk. There will be guided tours offered daily at blue kiosk in main carpark 11 a.m. & 2 p.m. Artists who live and work in this area will exhibit their work, together with a number of invited artists. For example this year the guest-artist Diana Worthy, who is living near Antequera will exhibit her ceramics and felt artworks. The stoneware works are hand thrown and hand decorated, with the result that she offers high quality ceramic bowls, vases etc. Her handmade felt wall-hangings are created in pure alpaca fibre coming from her own Alpacas! Local German artist Heide Dorsch will exhibit her works in restaurant El Pilon. Realistic works made with

A Dutch guest-artist who will bring one of her works especially from Holland to Spain is Merel Holleboom. She makes big metal sculptures which she designs and manufactures all by herself. English illustrator John Barrett, living in Canillas de Albaida, will show his paintings and drawings which are inspired by Garcia Lorca at Paco's restaurant. Spanish artist Raquel Noguerol Perez, from Granada, shows her drawings full of dreams and stories. Since there are 19 artists participating we can go on explaining what kind of work they will exhibit. But if you do love art, you must just come up to Competa at the beginning of April. On behalf of the artists and craft people of C贸mpeta & the guestartists, we welcome you to the Art Walk! The Artwalk starts at Wednesday, 01-04-15, inauguration at 11 at the Salon de Actos, at 12 all the venues open. Open; Wed 1, Thurs 2, Sat 4, Sun 5 at 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Admission is free. student who couldn't understand why she was piling on the pounds discovered she had a hidden medical disorder - Sleep Eating. Kate Archibald, 20, gets out of bed and sleep-walks into the kitchen, where she grabs armfuls of any food she can find. She then takes it back to bed and scoffs the lot - without realising she's eaten a thing. In the morning, Kate wakes up feeling oddly full and finds dozens of wrappers stuffed behind her bed. After her first year at university, Philosophy and World Religion student Kate, who reckons she sleep eats about three nights a week, had gone up three dress sizes - ballooning from a size ten to a size 16.She has now been diagnosed with Nocturnal Eating Disorder - a rare side effect of ADHD medic

Grass specimens dating back 100 million years were covered in a fungus similar to ergot, the active ingredient in the drug that inspired The Beatles and Rolling Stones to write some of their more psychedelic offerings. Samples of it were found in grass preserved in amber in Burma. In animals ergot can trigger hallucinations, delirium, convulsions and the staggers. company boss came up with an apt way of protecting himself when angry staff stormed his office amid bankruptcy rumours - he built a wall made of money. In a move Scrooge McDuck or Cyril Sneer would have been proud of, property developer Cheng Hsiao, 45, constructed a fort of sorts using bundles of cash. He resorted to the extreme action after rumours circulated that he had run out of money and couldn't settle promises made to farmers, who had handed over their land for a new business park. Worried they would be left financially ruined, the farmers joined forces with 1,000 mostly migrant staff working for Cheng and descended on his offices in Guiyang, China. One, Kong Lu, 53, said: "We wanted to make sure he didn't flee the country with our money."But when they got there, instead of security guards and closed offices, they found the doors open and Cheng inside the building standing behind a wall of money. He then started handing it out to staff, settling the debts immediately, and even paying bonuses which many had not expected. Kong said: "I am very sorry that I ever doubted him. "He is a great businessman and a great employer, and he has made sure all of us are very happy and will have a wonderful New Year break."

UPSCALE BARS AND RESTAURANTS IN GRANADA FOR 2015 Here are some of the smartest places to try out in 2015.

W

hen you arrive into the city of Granada the amount of bars and restaurants in the city centre can be overwhelming. It can be difficult to choose amongst so many different options. Over the last year many new places have opened. Here are some of the smartest places to try out in 2015. Eat out in Granada Sibarius This restaurant is in one of the oldest squares in Granada. Plaza Bib Rambla. Sibarius has been open for 18 months and offers a menu of Japanese and Peruvian Cuisine. Choose to sit outside on the terrace overlooking the square or stay inside. Arriaga Alvaro Arriaga is well known in culinary circles in Spain. A basque chef he will only use the best quality meat and fish for his kitchen. The restaurant is one of the more elegant options for lunch or dinner in Granada. (It´s opposite Science Park Museum).Dine at Restaurante Arriaga on a table on the seventh floor. As you savour the food you will enjoy a vast panoramic view over the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This is located inside the Museum Caja Cultural de Andalucía and perfect for viewing Granada too. Meat lovers shouldn´t miss the tender Beef Cheek cooked for 24 hours. Also choose dessert the Marscapone Flan which is highly recommended. In April 2014 Alvaro Arriaga opened a new venture, Caradura Bistrot at Calle María Guerrero. Plaza de la ilusión. This bar is informal, perfect for lunch on the run or a few beers with friends. It´s located in a residential area but a handy address to have if you are close to train station or around that side of town.

Drinks in Granada The street Angel Ganivet has undergone a huge transformation in 2014. This was the entrance to the Realejo quarter in times gone by and more recently the area where high end boutiques were located. As some of those stores have moved to other more commercial streets in the city or closed down, this street has now been filled with new bars and restaurants. Some of the names which opened this year were: Lowe Gastro & Drinks This smart addition to the street opened in Autumn 2014. Offering a selection of good food as well lots of great Gin & Tonics and cocktails. The interior is elegant and luxurious. Some of the disehs on the menu here are pork skirt steak with reduction of rum and a generous Cesar Salad. Artik Opened in November 2014. This bar has an extensive list of specialist Gins and tonics as well as cocktails too. The music is low key so that you

can actually talk. Artik is a bar with a relaxed atmosphere but yet has an ultra modern interior design. The list of Cocktails without alcohol is extensive. Aliatar In 2008 this nightclub opened right in the centre of Granada. Previously a cinema, the interior is spectacular due to the high ceilings and large scale of the building. Often there are events such as fashion shows and launch events which are organized here. On a typical weekend night it will get busy after 1am and stay open until 7am on weekends. Aliatar is at Calle Recogidas 2 Upper 683 Opened in September 2012 in the Serrallo Plaza this nightclub is one of the most modern in Granada. It has a chill out terrace outside overlooking Granada which is open in the afternoons. There is a smart restaurant inside with Asian Mediterranean fusion too. .

Gently fold in half of the cheese, the chorizo, red pepper, sour cream paprika, and parsley with a silicone spatula. Season to taste with more salt and pepper. Using your fingers, rub the outsides of the potato shells with the oil. Distribute the filling among the shells, mounding it, and place on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake the potatoes, uncovered, until heated through, 25 to 30 minutes. (To check, insert the blade of a small knife into the center of a potato for 5 seconds; it should be hot.) Sprinkle the potatoes with the remaining cheese and bake until the cheese melts and browns lightly in some places, 2 to 3 minutes more. Garnish the potatoes with parsley, let sit 5 to 10 minutes, and serve.

anchego, chorizo, and smoked paprika lend a Spanish flavor to a beloved American comfort food. These potatoes are big enough to be a main dish; make halves (see variation below) if you’d like to serve them as a side.

INGREDIENTS 4 large russet potatoes (10 to 12 oz. each), scrubbed, pierced 5 or 6 times with a fork 2 oz. (4 Tbs.) unsalted butter, softened 1 tsp. sweet smoked paprika Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 oz. coarsely grated Manchego (1-1/2 cups) 1/2 cup cooked, crumbled fresh chorizo (from one 5- to 6-oz. fresh chorizo link) OR diced cured chorizo 1/2 cup drained, diced roasted

red pepper 1/4 cup sour cream 1 tsp. chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley; more for garnish 1 Tbs. canola oil Position a rack in the center of the oven and heat the oven to 400°F. Place the potatoes directly on the oven rack and bake until tender when pierced with a fork, about 1 hour 10 minutes. Transfer the potatoes to a cutting board and let sit until cool enough to handle, about 10 minutes. Cut a 1/2-inch-thick slice lengthwise off the top of each potato; scrape the flesh from the slices into a large bowl and discard the skins. Spoon the flesh from the potatoes into the bowl, leaving a 1/4-inch shell. Add the butter, paprika, 3/4 tsp. salt, and 1/2 tsp. pepper and mix with a potato masher until blended; do not overwork (lumps are OK).

Make Ahead Tips The potatoes can be baked and filled up to 1 day ahead. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Bring them to room temperature and heat the oven to 400°F before doing the final bake. Variations Twice-Baked Potato Halves: After the first bake, halve the potatoes lengthwise. Scoop the flesh out of both halves, leaving a 1/4-inch shell. Make the filling, then fill both halves of each potato, bake, and finish as directed. SPAIN IN STATS: A PORTRAIT OF A NATION

F

rom a very low crime rate to the largest wealth divide in the European Union, here are ten key statistics that shine a light on modern Spain. Statistics may not tell the whole story about a country, but they do provide a fascinating insight.

42 The Grapevine

Immigrants and expats There were 4.905.495 foreign residents officially registered in Spain as of June 2014, out of a total estimated population of 46.507.760 million. The number of foreigners in the country could, however, actually be higher as not everyone is registered at their local town hall. There were 311,774 registered Brits in Spain at the start of 2014 for example, but the real number of people from the UK

living in Spain either for the whole year, or part of the year, is likely to be much higher. The largest groups of foreigners are Romanians and Moroccans, with the Brits in third place. Safety first Spain is definitely one of Europe's safer countries and crime rates in general are on the wane, despite

increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.

Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es

The mean average monthly salary in Spain in 2013 was just €1,324 while 34 per cent of the country's 16,682,861 employees earned the minimum wage of €645. Tax office figures show that almost half of Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called

Telephone 952516294. The idea first started in 2006 as sadly many of us had lost friends and family to cancer. Instead of travelling back to the UK to join a “Race for Life” in aid of Cancer Research UK where annually up to 750,000 participate at one of the numerous venues across various towns and cities across the UK, we decided to arrange a local event “Walk for Life” and support Cudeca. To celebrate a decade of Walk for Life, we'd like

will be three separate prizes for the best dressed female, male and youngster. Also for the first time, en route there will be a “special Cudeca watering hole.” Full details to be announced in next month's Grapevine. As always, it is free to join our walk, all I please ask is that you try and obtain as much sponsor money as possible or make a donation. Please contact me, Cindy Jones 665156467 or email cindyjones19@hotmail.com for a sponsor form. The “Day for Life” fun begins from 12noon onwards at The Alberdini with lots of entertainment for both adults and children. There will be an opportunity to try Hoopla, Tin Can Alley, Pin the Poo and Cover the Bottle and win a prize

I am really hoping the weather will be kind to us this year, you may recall last year the walkers got absolutely drenched in a torrential downpour. Although I cannot guarantee the weather, I will pray for a dry, sunny day. I can however, promise you a fun day as described above together with a full programme of musical entertainment, whilst at the same time helping Cudeca. It is a charitable organisation that provides palliative care to the terminally ill cancer sufferers within the province of Malaga. Cudeca receives very little public funding instead they entirely depend on initiatives for raising money to ensure they can continue to provide the “special kind of caring” to those who need specialist palliative care. coming from Rueda and Penedes in Catalonia. Rioja Wine Region The Rioja wine region consists of three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja. From these vineyards in the north of Spain come some of the country’s top red wines.

SPANISH WINE

T

he red wines of Rioja, the sherries of Jerez and the crisp Cava of Catalonia are the best known Spanish wines yet it is the lesser known reds of Ribera del Duero that have made the greatest impact at international wine fairs. What to look for in Spanish wines Look for these quality designations on the Spanish wine label. Crianza: Crianzas spend between 6-12 months in oak casks. Reserva: Reservas are aged a minimum of 1 year in oak casks and 2 years in bottles or a combination of both with a minimum of one year in casks. Gran Reserva: These wines are only made in exceptional years, undergo extensive ageing, with a minimum 2 years in oak and 3 in the bottle. The periods of ageing vary according to the local regulatory body. Wine Classification: ‘Denominaciónes de Origen’ Spain was the first country to have laws defining quality. The country’s wine regions are known as ‘denominaciónes’ in the way that French wines are classified by ‘appellation’. This is a system which is used to classify and regulate grape variety and region of origin. Here are some details of the designations of origin in Spain with the best wines at the top of the list:

50 The Grapevine

Denominación de Pago (DO de Pago): The wines of ‘de Pago’ are of the highest quality which are usually produced by individual estates. Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOC): These are wine regions which have earned a reputation for consistent quality and this particular status has only been awarded to Rioja and Priorato. Denominación de Origen (DO): There are sixty six wine regions throughout Spain with this status producing mainstream quality wines. Vino de Calidad Producido en Región Determinada (VCPRD):This is the title given to the newer wine producing areas currently finding their place on the quality ladder. Vino de la Tierra (VdlT) :There are a total of 58 (including official and unofficial) Vino de la Tierra regions in Spain where country wines taking the name of the region in which they are produced can be found. Vino de Mesa :Vino de Mesa or table wine as we refer to it is bulk grown and more often than not produced from a wide selection of regions. This means it does not have a vintage and the label on the bottle will not show its area of production – it will simply say ‘Produce of Spain’. Spanish Wine Regions Wine Regions of Spain There are more than 50 with the best reds coming from Rioja, Ribero del Duero and Navarra in the north and the top whites

Ribera del Duero Wine Region The Ribera del Duero region of northern Spain has never received the acclaim of its neighbour in nearby Rioja yet it is here that Spain’s finest red wines come from. Penedes Wine Region Winemaking technology in the Penedès region is way ahead of the rest of Cataluña, and ahead of most of Spain, largely because of the wealth and technical expertise generated by the booming cava industry. A whole range of day excursions from Barcelona are available to this wine lover’s paradise. Cava – Spanish Sparkling Wine Cava comes from the Penedes Region of northern Spain near Barcelona. It’s very similar to French Champagne but much better value. Somontano Wine Region The Somontano wine region of northern Spain lies in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the province of Huesca. Sherry Wine Region The relentless heat of the Jerez sherry region in Andalucia is well suited to vines where the clay albariza soil acts as a sponge which soaks up and stores the winter rainfall until the vines need it in summer. Rias Baixas Wine Region The Rias Baixas region of Galicia on Spain’s Atlantic northwest coast is famed for its excellent Albariño wines.

TAPAS

T

apas are at the very heart of Spanish lifestyle and culture. Everywhere in Spain, you will find lively, noisy bars serving small plates of superb flavours and local delicacies. It is essentially a style of eating rather than a form of cooking. Tapas mean sociability, friends and family. The Spanish, in general, won't drink without eating something as well. Tapas in SpainHappy hour in Spain is not a half price drink hour. It's a time when you can have a free small tapa with every

drink ordered. Not all bars participate in this modern custom but it is certainly becoming more popular. Many cuisines offer foods meant to awaken the appetite. Antipasti, hors d'oeuvres and mezes are among countless names of dishes typically eaten just before a meal. In some trendy restaurants they turn an assortment of small dishes into the main meal itself. In Spain, however, eating tapas is a separate dining experience. In fact, the term tapas and its various regional equivalents have come to imply the act of going out ng the

barhopping, or the art of eating while standing. After completing the first round of lively conversation and small plates, the group moves on to the next bar, often only footsteps away. There is no end to the variety of tapas available. Every village, town or city has their own variety of small bites of Spanish flavours. Some of these tapas are common to all districts. Even if the name is slightly different, the recipe will be the same. THE HISTORY OF TAPAS: The word "tapas" is derived from the Spanish verb tapar, "to

cover". Tapa means "lid" or "cover" in Spanish. There are a wide variety of colorful explanations for why tapa has come to denote a type of food: * According to legend, the tapa tradition began when King Alfonso X was ill. During his illness he ate small dishes washed down by wine. He accredited this diet to his recovery and ordered that all taverns serve small snacks or tapas with their wine.

history by incorporating ingredients and influences from many different cultures and countries. The Romans invaded and introduced the Olive. The Moors invaded in the 8th century and brought almonds, citrus fruits and fragrant spices. The discovery of the New World brought the introduction of chili peppers, tomatoes, corn, beans and potatoes. All have combined to make tapas fun and exotic dishes with very few boundaries. COMMON SPANISH TAPAS:

* Another version is thin slices of Jamón Iberia were placed across the top of his wine glass, encouraging him to snack. Hence the tapa (cover). * Yet another version is King Alfonso stopped by a famous venta (inn) in windy Cadiz where he ordered a cup of sherry. The waiter covered the glass with a slice of cured ham to protect the sherry from the sand. The king, after drinking the wine and eating the ham, ordered another sherry "with the cover." * A commonly cited explanation is that an item, be it bread or a flat card, etc., would often be placed on top of a drink to protect it from fruit flies; at some point it became a habit to top this "cover" with a snack. * It is also commonly said that since one would be standing while eating in traditional Spanish bars, they would need to place their plates on top of their drinks in order to eat, therefore creating a cover. * Some believe that the name originated sometime around the 16th century when tavern owners found out that the strong taste and smell of mature cheese could help disguise that of bad wine, thus "covering" it. Whatever the source, tapas have since evolved through Spanish

dices and peas served with mayonnaise or Aioli Queso con anchoas -Cured cheese with anchovies on top Tortilla de patatas -Best described as a potato quiche or omelet EATING TAPAS: In Spain, dinner is seldom served before 9.30pm. It is common to eat as late as midnight and then attend a concert starting at 2am! This leaves a significant amount of time between lunch, taken between 1-3pm, and dinner. Therefore, Spaniards often go "bar hopping" and eat tapas in the time between finishing work and having dinner. Nowadays, it is very common for bars and restaurants to have a range of tapas available for all opening hours. Some restaurants specialize in tapas only, while others have their tapas bar as well as their restaurant menu. One can sit at the bar and snack on tapas all night or have the tapas as a starter before being seated at a table for the main meal. In most restaurants, tapas are ordered as portions or raciónes. Media ración is a small dish or half the full serving size. Ración is a whole serving for one. The portions are usually shared by diners, not unlike a Middle Eastern Mezze or a Chinese Yum Char. In Northern Spain, tapas are called pinchos or pintxos, pincho meaning toothpick. The toothpick is to keep the topping from falling off the bread it is covering. Often topped with wonderful but salty hams and sausages, tapas are a strong inducement to thirst, which is quickly quenched in a bar. As a bar food, it doesn't get much better than that. LAS FALLAS FESTIVAL Valencia March 2015 ights, gunpowder, monuments, flowers, traditional costumes, music, satire, emotions and a great deal of fun are the ingredients of a unique cocktail known as the Fallas Fiestas.

L

to 19 (the feast of Saint Joseph, day of the father in the whole country), Valencia is given over to a carnival of bonfires, fiesta, fireworks and a healthy dose of satire known as Las Fallas, the fires.

In the middle of the Mediterranean coast, Valencia city, celebrates each year the final days of the winter and the arrival of spring with spectacular fires and pyrotechnics. From March 15

through the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in an noisy event called la Mascleta. This concert of gunpowder is very popular and involves different neighbourhood groups competing for the most impressive volley, ending with the terremoto, (literally means "earthquake") as hundreds of masclets exploiting simultaneously. While this may not be for the frail or faintfainthearted, you understand how hearted, the Valencians got their valiant name. Another important event is the Ofrenda de Flores a la Virgen de los Desamparados, a beautiful ceremony every March 17 and 18, that honours Valencia's patron Virgin. Thousands of Falleras and Falleros arrive to the city from every corner of the Comunitat (Valencia State) and take to the streets wearing traditional costumes and dancing to their neighbourhood or village bands as they weave their way to the Plaza de la Virgen to offer bouquets to the giant image of the Virgin. Historians say that the origins of the festival go back to the time when carpenters cleared out their workshops and talleres at the end of winter, throwing out odds and ends of wood and old candles and lighting them on the street the day of Saint Joseph. Nowadays, celebrations draw to an end with a fabulous firework display in the Paseo de la Alameda, called the Nit del Foc (literally "The Night of Fire"), on March 18. All Fallas burn all over the city the Crema night (including the winner of the competition) in a tremendous spectacle of fire and joy. Valencia is at that moment like Nero's Rome, a city in flames. That's why Valencians call this the best firework fiesta in the world! Don´t miss it! The Fallas Programme 2015 The official programme offers a diverse range of activities that run

through March, intensifying as the Fallas week approaches. Decorative lighting covers the 370 falla group headquarters spread throughout the city. at Bar Vendimia, Competa in order to raise funds for the above mentioned charities. Some of you may remember our “Cava and Cake and Open Garden event last year. This raised a staggering 643 euros. On a previous occasion people generously donated to help our daughter Georgia raise money in support of her Open Water Swim in Lake Windemere, swimming in memory of her brother who died as a result of epilepsy. This raised a fantastic 420 euros.

PURPLE DAY 27th March at 8pm

W

hat is Purple Day? It is a day designed to promote a greater understanding of epilepsy on a global scale and to help reduce the stigma attached to epilepsy. There are about 600,000 sufferers in the UK and almost as many sufferers in Spain. Nearly 3000 deaths occur as a result of epilepsy each year.

Charities such as Epilepsy Action and Sudden and Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), work to improve the lives of sufferers, and donations go to research for a greater understanding of the condition, and the prevention of Sudden and Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.

We look forward to seeing you at Bar Vendimia when the singing group 'The Purple Poppers' and various solo artists will present an enjoyable, light hearted concert.

On the 27th March at 8pm there will be a fund raising concert held

AMAZING FACTS ABOUT SPAIN'S LA LIGA

G

OLDEN OLDIE: The oldest footballer to debut in Spain's La Liga was actually an Englishman. Harry Lowe (born in 1886) was an impressive 48 years and 226 days old when he played his first and last match for Basque side Real Sociedad. Lowe, a former Spurs and Fulham centre half in the 20s, had been coaching ‘La Real’ for 5 years when one of his players fell ill before a match against Valencia. Back then teams couldn’t make changes so Howe decided to put on his boots and endure a 7-1 defeat.

SIMPLY THE BEST: The only other true contender is the English Premier League, but in terms of stats provided by Uefa's league coefficient, Spain's 'Primera División' is still the world's best league and has been for the past 5 years. Take last season, an all-Spanish

62 The Grapevine

Champions League final (Real vs Atlético) and a Europa League champion (Seville). Add the Ballon d'Or and other footballing awards won by Messi, Iniesta, Xavi and Ronaldo and the case is well and truly closed. ENGLISH ORIGINS: The oldest club in Spain is Recreativo de Huelva (pictured here in their controversial 2012 away kit), currently playing in the second division. The team was founded in 1889 by the English doctor William Alexander Mackay and British workers and engineers at the Rio Tinto mining company in Andalusia. The first official game, meanwhile, was played in Seville in 1890, with almost all of the players on the ground being Brits. MESSI MAGIC: The all-time top scorer in the Spanish top flight is Telmo Zarra who scored 251

goals in 277 games for Athletic Bilbao from 1940 to 1955. But Barcelona’s Argentinian magician Leo Messi is just six goals away from taking the crown himself having hit the back of the net 245 times in 278 appearances for the ‘azulgranas’. SAY WHAT? Spain’s teams have some pretty strange nicknames. Atlético are known as the 'colchoneros, or 'mattress men', supposedly because their striped kit resembled Spain’s mattresses in the early 20th century. Espanyol are called the perriquitos (budgies), perhaps because they once played in an area with lots of palm trees filled with the cute birds, and Villareal are called el 'submarino amarillo' (The Yellow Submarine). Anyone who has seen their kit will know why.

PICHICHI: Those of you who’ve listened to Spanish football commentary may have overheard this weird sounding word when the likes of Messi or Ronaldo are mentioned. Pichichi is the word for maximum goal scorer in Spain but was originally the nickname of Athletic Bilbao player Rafael Moreno Aranzadi. A prolific pint-sized striker in the 20s, he died at the tender age of 29 from typhus, probably from eating oysters that had gone off. As a result, sports newspaper Marca decided to name their trophy for top scorer after him.

FRANCO AND THE BEAUTIFUL GAME: One of the strangest episodes in Spanish football history involves the signing of Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stéfano. Barcelona was all set to sign the Argentinian when Spain’s football federation vetoed the move in favour of a deal that would see Di Stefano playing alternate years at the two clubs. But Barça’s board rejected the move and lost the player. Many say dictator Franco pressured football authorities to bring the player to his beloved Madrid.

DAVID VERSUS GOLIATH: Barcelona’s Nou Camp (or ‘new ground’) holds 99,000 people, making it the fifth biggest association ground in the world. The home ground of this year’s top flight debutant, Eibar, on the other hand fits less than 6,000 people. Things could get a little squishy.

RICH KIDS: Many people argue there are actually two leagues in the Spanish top flight: Real Madrid and Barça, and, well, everyone else. When it comes to money, there’s no dispute. Real Madrid were the richest club in the world with revenues of €519 million ($680) million in Deloitte’s 2014 Football Money League,

To advertise call 637 028 873

while Barçelona were second with €483 million. The next Spanish club on the list was at number 20: Atlético Madrid with revenues of €120 million. THE ALL-WHITES: The ‘merengues’, as Real Madrid are colloquially known, are the most famous football team in the world to play all in white. There are two theories as to how the team’s founders came to choose the colour: 1) They were influenced by London side Corinthian F.C., one of the best clubs at the start of the 1900s. 2) Players would remove their clothes and play in their white underwear. As Real were the oldest team in the capital, they were the only ones who didn’t have to wear a different colour sash to distinguish them.

My dad always said to me, "Take it with a pinch of salt." Nice man. Made horrible tea.

I left my last girlfriend because she wouldn't stop counting. I often wonder what she's up to now.

You women may be surprised to learn that making us sleep on the couch isn't that bad. It's kinda manly, makes us feel like we are camping......with a really angry bear nearby. Since my son Carl was born, we have had fifteen washing machines, he left home five years ago, and since then we've had the same one without any problems. So washing machines do last longer with Carl gone........

I was at a job interview today. The interviewer said to me, "On your CV, it says that you are a man of mystery." I said, "That's correct." He said, "Would you like to elaborate?" I said, "No."

My mum said, "You treat this place like a hotel!" She will regret that when I give her a low score on TripAdvisor for 'rude staff'.

I've been searching for my stolen bed. And I won't rest until I find it.

Someone ripped the pages out of both ends of my dictionary today. It just goes from bad to worse!

My scummy neighbour reckons he was paid fifteen hundred quid for his appearance on the Jeremy Kyle show. I think he's lying through his tooth.

CELEBRATION TIME – BEE DAY! Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh.

2

015 is a very special year for us!

This month, the Garden Centre is celebrating its 15th birthday and my book, Mediterranean Garden Plants, also has its 10th birthday. And because this year is so very special, a double celebration, we'd like to share it with you so we are making big plans. We are scheduling four Open Days through the year at the Garden Centre and, on those days, there will be lots of special offers and discounts. At the Open Days, either myself or an invited guest speaker will be giving a talk on gardening or a related subject, followed by free tea/coffee/soft drinks with home-made cake and, of course, I will be there with my team to answer all your queries. The dates of these Open Days – to give you plenty of warning – have been scheduled for 1st April, 3rd June, 7th October and 9th December. All talks will start at 11am. We want to make this a memorable year, so our first Open Day is Bee Day. We are going to set up a bee hive at the Garden Centre and we hope the bees will flourish and grow with us. We think that many of you are fascinated by the world of bees, as we are, so Mick the Bee Man, a professional bee-keeper, will show us the entire set-up, explain how to look after the hive and bees and answer all our questions. We are having placid, well-mannered bees for our tranquil setting, so come along – bee wise! There'll be honey to buy

84 The Grapevine

on the day and, hopefully, we'll soon be producing our very own Florena honey. You may even go home with a hive! We'll keep you posted on special events for the other Open Days and all that will be happening in 2015. On top of all that, my book, Mediterranean Garden Plants, has now been around for 10 years – unbelievably! Many of you have already bought it and love it – thank you all. From 1st March, it will be at a special birthday price of €20 – a lovely gift for a birthday, house-warming or just because! And, even in March, we aren't sitting back; we are refreshing the patio area to make it an even more delightful area to enjoy a coffee and our range of plants is greater than ever. We'll be potting up the bare-root roses that remain – so last chance for bare-roots is the very beginning of March, please! Gardening Jobs for March: One of my favourite months in the garden. There's just a whisper of spring, a freshness and a burgeoning and it's so exciting to see seeds emerging, buds bursting and shoots thrusting – get out there and enjoy! Planting: As I write this, we've still had relatively little rain. Don't despair, March and April – and especially around Easter! - can often be very wet. Rain and early spring temperatures are a fantastic combination for plants as they settle in really quickly. Get trees, both fruiting and ornamental, shrubs and climbers planted now. It's also the season to start

planting semi-tropicals such as palms and bougainvilleas. Smaller plantings can be squeezed in later. Pots: Traditionally now is the time to freshen up pots for Easter and visiting friends/family. Permanent plantings such as palms and yuccas are great for their structural presence but if you want colour, small bedding plants need changing frequently. They're cheap and cheerful and will give you several months of flower power. Fertilise: This is the month when you need to give your plants a banquet. They've had their winter rest and are now coming out of hibernation like hungry bears! To thrust powerfully into new strong growth, they need some help. The warmer conditions and fertiliser will green things up that are looking palid – especially citrus and lawns. Scarify the lawn first to remove any winter moss and old thatch. Fungicide: Apply copper fungicide to the entire peach family – peach, nectarine, donut peach, almond, cherry and plum – just before the leaf buds start to unfurl to prevent peach leaf curl, that disfiguring red blistering on leaves. Insects: look out for the first attacks as the weather warms and counter-attack before numbers multiply. Look out for slugs and snails – damp warm conditions and fresh young garden sh are bliss to them. Vegetable Plot: Sow leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach and chard, leeks, beetroot, radish, celery, peas and beans. Crops such as basil, tomatoes, peppers, chillies and courgettes should be sown too, though protect from cold spells. And don't forget to step back and enjoy the fabulous flowering of all our fruit trees – peach, quince, plum, apricot and cherry quickly follow the snow of almond blossom.

U3A AXARQUIA Following a good start to 2015, U3A Axarquia has continued to move forward. The long expected new exhibition by the Photography Group, opened on February 16th at the Las Perlas Gastrobar in Torre del Mar, and the same Group has announced a Pop-Up Studio Workshop Day in March. Elsewhere, the Art Appreciation Group has been looking at the work of the legendary Jack Vettriano, and the Spanish History Group had a trip to the Treasure caves at Rincon de la Victoria. However, all is not rosy with the Petanque Group in Torre del Mar, who have made a plea for new members, following a fall in numbers. The group meet every Monday at 3pm for about 90 minutes of playing, and are a very friendly crowd and welcome everybody, including those who are new to the game. If you would like to try the game out first, come along one Monday and see for yourself just along in a westerly direction from the blue and white lighthouse in Torre del Mar. Boules are available to try the game. The U3A website – www.u3aaxarquia.com - continues to be visited by an increasing number of people, and the future months are looking good.

BURRIANA SETTING FOR NEW ADVERT Burriana beach in Nerja was chosen as the setting for a new advert featuring ‘parkour’ athletes. Parkour is a French, noncompetitive sports discipline, in which participants leap and vault from one place to another as quickly as possible, overcoming in the most efficient way all sorts of barriers and obstacles, usually in an urban environment. Parkour athletes are called traceurs, and their sport requires dedicated training, skill and great physical condition. Malaga athlete Santi Traceur, known for his YouTube channel, took part in the filming in Nerja, which was organised by production company Euromedia for a Dutch bank called Florius, specialised in providing loans to young people.
