Editors Note... As I am writing this it is pouring with rain however we did enjoy some glorious days over the Easter period and now I feel we are on the way to summer. So with temperatures rising and the longer days arriving, this month’s magazine is influenced by the preparation for the summer period. Local businesses have offered their hints and tips during the warmer weather on pages 54 to 63. Also, ladies take advantage of some excellent beauty offers advertised this month. For this month’s competition prize, in keeping with our theme, E.G.O Hair and Beauty are donating a summer hair treatment and a blow dry. On a different note there are some great functions going on in May. Last month our family really enjoyed the Easter Egg hunt at the Hotel Balcon organised by CAMPO and we followed this by participating in the Art Walk in Competa. Now, we will look forward to the Walk for Life, Scruffs and the Flamenco Fiesta Day. If you haven’t got your tickets for the latter buy them at Fernans or Sugar and Spice in Competa and we will see you there! These functions raise important funds for different charities whilst providing some good fun along the way.

ittle marketing experience to pad his CV and maybe some spending money. That's what Alejandro Abad was hoping for when he applied for an internship at the Madrid office of Innwise, a Spanish marketing company. What he got, a few hours after submitting his application, was an email, mistakenly sent to him and another applicant, speculating just how little the 26-year-old would work for. "Try to get him for free, or at the most, 200 euros for parttime (per month) for Alejandro," read the email. Abad thought of Innwise as a respectable company with a good reputation. "I was stunned," he said. The email went on to note that the other applicant was from Toledo, about 50 miles outside of Madrid. "It might be harder to get the one from Toledo on board for 400 euros, than the youngster for free." Abad posted the email on twitter to expose the company's

attitude. The marketing student wanted his classmates to see the email, he said, as their July graduation date meant that internships and salaries had started to dominate their conversations. His post was soon trending on twitter, sparking a conversation about the race to the bottom by Spanish youth as they scramble to gain experience in a country where the unemployment rate for young people hovers around 55%

Francis Brennan, 25, from Anfield, Liverpool, was last seen in Alicante on 24 January when he was stopped in a friend's car by several men who posed as police officers. His body was found in the Le Zenia area of Alicante on Saturday and was formally identified by the Spanish authorities. Brennan fled the UK ahead of a sentencing date last October for an assault he committed in the Thames Valley area in 2012. His girlfriend, Sophie Staunton, went out to Javea, Alicante, in December to persuade him to return home before he went missing a month later. In February, his parents, Carl and Janet, appealed to the British public and the British expat community in Spain to come forward with any information that could lead to his safe return.A spokesman for Merseyside police said: "We can confirm that a body found on a beach in the La Zenia area of Alicante on Saturday was last night formally identified by the Spanish authorities as Francis Brennan.

here is still time to join one of the ninth annual sponsored Walk for Life walks in Competa. This year, once again a choice of three sponsored walks, two commencing at 08.45am from Puerto del Collado and the 5km walk around the village of Competa from The Mirador, Competa at 10.45am. For full details see our website www.walkspain.co.uk/walk-for-life It is free to join any of our walks, all I please ask is that you try and obtain as much sponsor money as possible. Any questions, please contact me Cindy Jones on 665156467 or email cindyjones19@hotmail.com The walks will terminate at The Alberdini Rural Hotel, Competa where the Day for Life fun begins. From 12 noon onwards, lots of entertainment for both adults and children. A dedicated children's area generously sponsored by Sergio Fernandez to include Hoopla, Tin Can Alley, Pin the Poo and Cover the Bottle, plus Face Painting and a Nail Bar. For

adults only, kindly arranged by Geoff Tyler, there will be a double elimination Darts Tournament which means that both winners and losers can progress to a final. The cost of taking part is only 4 euros and players should sign up and pay at Todo Papel, Competa prior to the event. Please indicate when signing up if you are taking part in one of the walks and Geoff will endeavour to give you a later playing slot. This year, there is an opportunity for the winner to be presented with a fantastic cup, kindly sponsored by Pavo Real, Competa. At lunchtime, The Alberdini will prepare and cook a “Paellagigante” for only 5euros a portion of which 2euros is donated to Cudeca. There will be numerous stalls to meander around, the ever popular homemade cake stall, hand-made jewellery, home-made soaps, Bookstall, Bric-a-Brac, Wooden Carvings, Marmalady selling natural produce of Jams, Marmalades, Pickles and Chutneys, and of course an amazing Raffle Stall. Lots of
fantastic prizes have already been generously donated so don't forget to buy your raffle tickets. This year for the first time, we are also running a “Surplus Produce” stall so if you have any surplus produce from your garden or land which you'd like to donate to Cudeca, please bring along on the day. Likewise if you have any books or bric-a-brac or wish to make a cake, all will be gratefully received on the day. If you have any questions, please contact me, as per the details above. I am really hoping the weather will be kind to us this year, hence the change of date to June. We have a very tough act to follow as last year's event raised 5000euros which included two very generous anonymous donations of 190e and 500e respectively. My personal goal is to hit 5000euros again; can you help me do it? This will help Cudeca to continue to provide “adding life to days” through their “special kind of caring” – palliative care to over 8500 advanced cancer patients and their families throughout the province of Malaga. As per previous years, there is no parking available on the Top Level of The Alberdini, only on the first level. Alternatively, a van will offer free transportation from outside The Portichuelo Store, Venta de Palma to the Alberdini and return. I look forward, once again to your fantastic support at our event. A Fun Family Day with lots to see and do, plus a live music schedule including Andy Time. Thank you Cindy Jones Cudeca Volunteer Website ; www.walkspain.co.uk/walk for life .

only a day or two this wonderful thing that you have achieved eclipses any negative thoughts. And so, within days of reaching Santiago and exclaiming that you would never walk another camino, there creeps into your psyche, totally unbidden, this undeniable urge to stay in contact with the camino, to maintain new friendships with other pilgrims, and you very soon realise that there is nothing you want more than to walk that path again, be it the same one or a different route. And before you have even embarked upon your second camino, you are already thinking about which route to walk on your third!
IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN! by Maggie Woodward
t's that time of year again! As I write this (15th April 2014) it is exactly one year to the day since I set off with my daughter, full of trepidation, to walk the camino de Santiago, 'Frances' route from the French side of the Pyrenees, westward across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela and further to Finisterre, a total of just under 1,000 km.
I
disturbed nights (sleeping in mixed dormitories in close proximity to snoring strangers). There were many descriptions of how painful it can be, walking day after day, week after week, but nothing can prepare you for the real thing. Life takes on a whole new routine - doing the same few things every day and listening to your body and mind as never before.
And in two weeks' time (1 May) I shall be setting off again, this time walking the camino Portuguese, starting in Lisbon and heading north through Porto, across the spanish border and once again to Santiago de Compostela. Not such a long route at just 615 km, but my big challenge this year is that I shall walk alone. Few people start this route in Lisbon, most preferring the shorter stretch from Porto, so the first couple of weeks might be a bit lonely.
And along with all the discomfort and disruption, comes a whole new exciting and fulfilling world, a whole new circle of friends, priorities change, things that seemed so important a few weeks earlier drift off into insignificance. You have endless patience for mundane tasks. You are delighted by tiny changes in a strengthening body. Small setbacks are followed by huge leaps forward. And the sense of joy and achievement in something only you are responsible for is immense.
The preparations for my first and second caminos have varied greatly, rather like the experience of childbirth, first and second time around. The first time I read every resource available, I worried about how I would cope with
16 The Grapevine
But as with childbirth, immediately you have given birth and the pain and effort is still fresh in your mind, you are likely to think that this is not an experience you want to repeat. And miraculously, after
The second time around, as with my second child, I am rather laidback! I know I can walk day after day! I know it will be hard for the first week or ten days! I am not stressing about what I should or shouldn't take! I know I can carry everything I need on my back. I've done it before - thousands of people do it every year, I know my strengths and weaknesses because I have already tested myself. Unfortunately my daughter is not able to join me on my forthcoming camino Portuguese, but who knows maybe next year, on the Via de la Plata....... You can follow my adventures live from the camino Portuguese via my blog http://www.magwood.wordpress.com
Share my pain and achievements and give me some welcome encouragement by commenting on my posts. The blog started as a way of keeping in touch with my family and friends and has now received over 40,000 hits. Oh, and look out for my partner David, who will be collecting sponsorship on my behalf in aid of Cudeca and Action for Animals (last year we were able to hand over 820 euros to Cudeca and about ÂŁ250 to Macmillan Nurses).

DARTS NIGHT PRESENTATION Alick Howard reports
T
uesday April 1st for some of us was All Fools Day and this year was no different as fifty or so darts fools gathered at Las Gemelas, Competa for the annual darts presentation night. After a grueling and exciting season of darts the competing teams gathered to celebrate a close finish to the season. Never have so many highly tuned (darts) athletes been gathered in one place since the London Olympics. Trophies and medals, amongst other achievement awards, were presented during the evening for the winning teams and individual winners in various categories. In true darts fashion plenty of beer was consumed and excellent food provided by the hosts for the evening, Lydia and Isidro from Bar Las Gemelas. The season and championship went to the wire as it wasn't until the final week that Las Gemelas were crowned champions for the second year, winning the Aden Penn Memorial Trophy, closely followed by Royal Turkeys and CD Eloys. The strongest team in

the league holding everyone else up and winners of the 'Cuchara de Madera' were Pavo Real. (That's last place to the uninitiated but I tried to make it sound good.) As alluded to earlier, not only were winners' prizes awarded but special achievement prizes were also handed out. As I'm sure most of you know, the idea of darts is to score as many points as possible with three darts up to the maximum 180 and thus score 501 in as few darts as you can. Thus, special recognition was given to a very skilled darts player who managed something spectacular and rarely seen. No, not a finish with 9 darts, the least amount possible but a score of precisely zero with three darts, missing the board completely. A pair of oversized comedy glasses were presented to her in honour of this achievement. However, not only did this person manage it once but actually repeated the feat. Hence, Liz Bland walked away with two pairs of comedy glasses and directions to Specsavers in time for next year. Trophies and medals were presented in individual categories

So after an exciting 2013/14 season let's hope next year will be just as close and eventful. Maybe Liz Bland can get her spectacles sorted at Specsavers and perhaps we will have a new team to crown as champions. A much earned rest for all the darts players before the new season starts in October. Prior to that I'm sure there will be pre-season beer drinking training camp whilst still being able to throw three darts at the board. Some can clearly only manage one or the other. To do both requires a special type of athlete.

grandmother has claimed she and her 10-yearold grandson were served pizza laced with marijuana which left them both in hospital. Ava Farley said she felt a rush, was sweating and her heartbeat was going very fast after eating several slices of a mushroom pizza in a Los Angeles restaurant. She claimed young Clintay Jones "started cussing, going off, talking crazy, and ran out the door naked".When they went to hospital, doctors said they found traces of marijuana intoxication in their urine. The medics asked the boy if he had been exposed to pot at home. Ms Farley told CBS: "They questioned him like, 'Have you had any of this? Did you do this? Is there anything in the house? Is this normal?' No, all we had was pizza. Her granddaughters both ate the same pizza but were not ill. They did not eat mushrooms after taking them off and Ms Farley believes it was the mushrooms that were tainted.

Ms Deprill was just hours old when she was abandoned, wrapped in a red sweater, in the bathroom of the fast-food restaurant in 1986.She was raised by adoptive parents. Now 27, she is a married mother of three - and says she has questions for her biological mother.

man walks into a bar ‌ with a tiger on a leash. It sounds like the beginning of a joke but it is not. John Basile faces misdemeanour charges after he took the big cat into Uncle Richie's bar in Lockport, Illinois.Mr Basile owns Big Run Wolf Ranch, a run-down animal rescue centre where he keeps wolves, a bear and the tiger. Witnesses say people started screaming "Is that a tiger?" in disbelief after Mr Basile and his feline companion walked in. Terry Lemming, Lockport police chief, said: "My concern really was for the people that frequent the downtown area "This was at 7.30 at night on a Sunday in an area that has a lot of people walking around."It is not the first time a big cat has visited the bar - after a woman was bitten by a tiger at the same drinking spot last December.

man who was horrifically injured in a motorbike crash has had his face rebuilt using 3D printing technology. Stephen Power is one of the first patients in the world to have 3D printing used at every stage of the procedure. The 29-year-old spent four months in hospital after breaking both arms, his right leg, both cheek bones, both eye sockets and his upper jaw in the crash in Llantwit Major, Wales, in September 2012. But 18 months later, the former barman is celebrating having the last of his facial injuries repaired thanks to the cutting edge technology. He said he was self-conscious about his appearance before the operation and wore sunglasses to hide his injuries. "I can't really explain how well it has gone," he said. "It has just made me look a lot better. I take my hat off to them."Mr Power had an eight-hour operation at Morriston Hospital, Swansea, after staff scanned 3D images of his face to work out how best to reassemble his shattered left cheek and eye socket. reassemble his shattered left cheek and eye socket.

HELPING AXARQUIA 2013 Income Tax declaration: where and when to present it.
The 2013 income tax campaign is about to begin, and here are some basic things to know: Who has to file a declaration Taxpayers who have received the following income in the 2013 financial year do not have to file: - €22.000 per year when it originates from one single payer. - €11,200 per year, when it originates from more than one single payer, provided that the sum of the amounts received from the second and subsequent payers, in order of amounts, exceed as a whole the sum of €1,500 per year. IMPORTANT: If you are a fiscal

resident in Spain and your pension does not exceed 11,200 Euros, you are not liable to file an Income Tax return. This regulation normally affects taxpayers who receive pensions from the foreign countries such as England, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, etc. However, when you receive earnings from pensions over 11,200 Euros, you are liable to declare this income. We would advise all fiscal residents, if their pension is below 11,200 Euros to complete a NIL Tax Return, in order to prove you are a fiscal resident which will help you in the future. Sending the draft From the 1st April 2014, the Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria (Spanish Tax
Authorities) will make available to taxpayers the draft or the tax information for the Personal Income Tax declaration, by computer, through the electronic office of the Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria, which can be accessed through the website of the Agencia Tributaria (Tax Authorities), or directly at https://www.agenciatributaria.gob. es. Deadline for submitting the declaration. If the declaration is submitted electronically via the Internet: from the 23rd of April to the 30th of June, both inclusive. If submitted by any other means: from the 5th of May to the 30th of June, both inclusive. The information provided in this article is not intended to be legal advice, but merely conveys general information related to legal issues.

SUMMER TAPAS SPREAD Tortilla, glazed chorizo, manchego cheese, cured meats & honey, stuffed peppers, rolled anchovies.
INGREDIENTS For the tortilla 250 g baby new potatoes 1 small red onion 1 teaspoon fennel seeds 2 cloves garlic ½ small bunch fresh rosemary 8 free-range eggs 1 large handful prewashed rocket, to serve For the chorizo 250 g semi-cured whole iberico chorizo 2 cloves garlic 4 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon runny honey For the peppers 50 g Manchego cheese 1 loaf ciabatta 50 g blanched almonds 42 The Grapevine
1 small bunch fresh thyme red wine vinegar 450 g jarred whole peppers For the Manchego 100 g Manchego cheese 100 g quality Spanish cured meats, such as pata negra runny honey, for drizzling instant or quality ground coffee 1 handful black olives 2 sprigs of fresh thyme or oregano, optional For the anchovies 50 g chilled marinated or dressed anchovies a few sprigs of fresh flatleaf parsley 1 lemon 150 g cherry tomatoes smoked paprika, for dusting
For the seasonings olive oil extra virgin olive oil sea salt black pepper To serve 1 bottle sparkling water, to serve 1 orange, to serve 1 bottle dry sherry, chilled, to serve METHOD TO START Get all your ingredients and equipment ready. Put a medium ovenproof frying pan (approx. 26cm) on a high heat and a small frying pan on a low heat. Turn the grill on to full whack. Put the standard blade attachment into the food processor. TORTILLA Chop the potatoes into 1cm chunks. Put them into the medium ovenproof frying pan with

a lug of olive oil and toss. Halve, peel and roughly chop the red onion. Once the potatoes have a good colour, add the onions to the pan along with the fennel seeds and mix well. Now get on with other jobs but remember to keep tossing the potatoes occasionally. CHORIZO Slice the chorizo into 2cm rounds. Put into the small frying pan with a splash of olive oil and toss occasionally until golden and crisp. PEPPERS Trim off the rind from the Manchego, then crumble into the food processor with a handful of torn up ciabatta, 50g of blanched almonds, the leaves from the bunch of thyme, a good pinch of salt & pepper and a swig of red wine vinegar. Whiz up until fine, then stuff inside the peppers – no need to pack it in. Once full, put them into a baking dish. Scatter any remaining breadcrumbs over the peppers. Top with the remaining thyme sprigs, drizzle with olive oil, then put on the middle shelf, under the grill, for 8 minutes. Rip the remaining ciabatta in half and take to the table.

MANCHEGO Lay the slices of cured meat on a board alongside the large wedge of Manchego. Drizzle a little honey over the cheese, then sprinkle over a pinch of ground coffee. Scatter a handful of black olives and a few leaves of thyme or oregano (if using) over the meat. Drizzle with a tiny bit of extra virgin olive oil, sprinkle lightly with pepper and take to the table.
TORTILLA Taste the potato mixture for seasoning, then crack the eggs directly into the pan and gently stir with a wooden spoon to create a marbled effect. Turn the heat up to medium. Once the eggs start to set around the sides, scatter the rest of the rosemary leaves on top and put under the grill on the top shelf for 3 to 5 minutes, or until set, golden and fluffy.
CHORIZO Lightly bash 2 unpeeled cloves of garlic with the heel of your hand or the bottom of a saucepan and add to the pan. TORTILLA The potatoes should be lovely and golden by now, so turn the heat down to low. Crush 2 unpeeled cloves of garlic into the pan. Pick most of the rosemary leaves into the pan and stir. Season with a good pinch of salt and pepper.
ANCHOVIES Put the anchovies into a nice serving bowl. Finely chop a few sprigs of parsley and sprinkle over. Finely grate over the zest of ½ the lemon, then drizzle over some extra virgin olive oil. Halve the cherry tomatoes and pile them next to the anchovies with a bunch of cocktail sticks. The idea is to get everyone to make their own skewers. Add a pinch of paprika and take to the table.
CHORIZO Carefully drain away most of the fat, leaving about 1 tablespoon of it behind. Add the red wine vinegar and runny honey and leave to reduce down to a really sticky glaze. Keep an eye on it, giving the pan a shake every so often so it doesn't catch.
TO SERVE Take the tortilla and stuffed peppers to the table. Pop a large handful of rocket next to the tortilla. Take the pan of sticky chorizo to the table. Serve with a jug of iced sparkling water filled with orange slices, and a chilled bottle of dry sherry.

3D PRINTING: SEVEN WEIRD AND WONDERFUL USES Seven weird and wonderful uses
A
n EU project to "print" smooth, blended food for the elderly is making headlines. But it is not the only 3D printing project to catch the eye... 1. Smooth food for the elderly One of the main causes of malnutrition among the elderly, scientists believe, is that people lose their love of food in old age. This is exacerbated by being forced to eat unappetising-looking purreed food. One solution is to reconstitue the pureed food back into "normal" shapes - be it a carrot or chicken leg - using silicone moulds. But 3D printing would allow, in theory, a limitless number of shapes. Also, nutritional supplements could be added directly to the blend. 2. Missing parts for household appliances. How many times has the plumber/electrician/builder left your home, after an expensive call out, saying "I'll need to come back when I have the spare part". All the the major appliance manufacturers publish their instruction manuals online. It is only a small stretch to imagine them publishing software which would allow you, or your tradesman, to print the crucial spare part in a matter of minutes. Of course, at the moment, it would take you many hours, but
44 The Grapevine
things will improve.. 3. Fighting wars Whenever a scientist makes a breakthrough, it is only a matter of time before someone uses that discovery to become - as Robert Oppenheimer quoted - Vishnu, "the destroyer of worlds". So it is with 3D printing. Forget the plastic gun that cost thousands of dollars and a couple of days to print. BAE, the British defence company, says it has sucessfully flown a Tornado jet using 3D printed parts, including a cockpit radio cover and components in the landing gear. The company said the process had the potential to save hundreds of thousands of pounds a year in maintenance and refit costs. 4. Mending broken bones What makes 3D printing special is its ability to create completely customised and personalised products, without the need to create a corresponding machine or tool to produce them. This is most useful when it comes to creating not commoditised spare parts, but bits of human bones. Earlier this year a titanium pelvis was made for a patient, who had lost half of his original to cancer. The 3D printed bone was coated with a mineral into which the remaining bone could grow and a standard hip replacement was fitted into the new socket. The
5. Heart transplants The most mind-boggling, worldchanging and ethically contentious use of 3D printing is the idea that you could create not just human tissue, but actual functioning body parts from a machine. The advantages are numerous: you could make these parts in far-flung corners of the world, you could ensure the new, healthy tissue is compatible with the patient, you would no longer have a traumatic and long wait for an organ donor. The ethical debate, however, will increase as the cost and sophistication of organ printing - so far just in test phase - increases. 6. Clothes Yes, it seems ludicrous that you would go to the bother of printing clothes, when you can pick up 3 T-shirts for ÂŁ6 from Sports Direct. But for high end fashion, printing a complex, geometric design that is guranteed to fit a particular body shape is easier and cheaper than relying on the human hand and a needle and thread. Some of the designs being experimented with are immensely impressive. 3D printing could also be very useful for producing shoes for people with odd-sized feet. 7. Drones One of the advantages of 3D printing is that you can create entire products without any nails or screws, allowing them to be far lighter than traditionallyconstructed versions. This has been put to good effect by Southampton University, which has created a drone, with a 2metre wingspan and capable fo flying 90 miles an hour. Because of its lightness, it is almost silent when in cruise mode and takes just 10 minutes to assemble.

he International Exhibition of Noble Wines, 2014 will take place from 25th to 27th of May 2014, it is the only exhibition to be dedicated to fortified, dessert and natural sweet wines. It is held every two years in Jerez de la Frontera, the Andalusia city that share its name with one of the most famous wines made in Spain. These wines are complex, special and don't have a global framework in spite of being regarded as the best wines in the world. Vinoble was created to become the center place for showcasing these special wines. The Fair has strengthened as an unique event in the world of exhibitions and wine fairs. Vinoble, The Alcázar of Jerez, an arab fortress of the XI century, that includes the Villavicencio Palace, which is a refurbished building that coexists with an old mosque surrounded by amazing gardens. The prestige of the exhibiting labels, the huge number of buyers and specialized journalists that visit the Fair and the high professionalism that supports it, makes Vinoble an unique place for diffusion, tasting, trade and delight. David Fernández-Prada announced that one of the most relevant innovations in Vinoble 2014 will be the bigger importance of the role of gastronomy. In this sense, a space called Gastrovinoble will be located at Vinoble, with workshops that will focus North versus South and land and sea food. Alongside this there will be the participation of renowned Mitchelin star chefs
including some famous Portuguese chefs. Portugal will have a prominent space at the fair, which will be relevant due to the presence of oportos. Workshops will be organized around a glass of wine, where issues such as sherry revival in the UK will be raised. Also of great interest will be the Amontillado sherry tastings On November 16, 2013.Jerez was chosen ‘European City of wine 2014' in the course of the 17TH Assembly General of Recevin (European network of wine cities) held in Marsala (Italy).. After the annoucment of Jerez as the winner of the contest, the Mayoress of Jerez, María José García-Pelayo, pointed out the interest of this recognition "is not only for the city and the province but also for Andalusia and the whole of the country, since it will involve the promotion of Spanish wines throughout Europe".

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Passionate Times, Passionate Vines
O
ne of the top plants on my ´wish list´for many years has been the fabulous crimson passion vine, passiflora vitifolia - otherwise known as the perfumed passion flower or grape-leaved passion vine.
As those of you on our mailing list will know, we now have stocks of this lovely climber and, as many of you have already bought, I thought it would be a good time to give you more information on how to look after your vine. A South American native, it can be found growing wild from Peru through to Nicaragua and we are lucky enough to have a climate that suits it perfectly for this is just a touch off a tropical vine, preferring slightly more temperate conditions, like our Mediterranean climate. It is hardy enough for us and will support -5C in short sharp spells but it does dislike prolonged cold and wet or frosty conditions.
52 The Grapevine
Its dark green glossy leaves are decidedly handsome, very much resembling grapevine leaves (hence vitifolia) and some 15 cm across x 20 cm long. They are deeply lobed, somewhat fuzzy on the underside and the stems are slender with the coiling tendrils so typical of the family. It will twine and twist around anything within its reach, making it largely selfsupporting unless grown on a very smooth wall. It will reach 6m or more so grow it on a strong structure. The roaring red flowers, 10 cm across, are wonderful against this deep green backdrop and are liberally produced through spring and early summer. They are softly fragrant too – rather rare in deeply coloured flowers – and attractive to butterflies. The egg shaped fruits, 5 cm long x 3 cm across, that follow are downy, green and speckled and striped in creamy white and yellow. The effect is just totally stunning. These edible fruits will remain quite sour even once they have
fallen. Store them for 2 or 3 weeks until mature when they have a wonderful exotic, somewhat sharp, strawberry flavour. These aromatic fruits have led to small scale commercial cultivation in the Caribbean but they are rarely, if ever, seen in our supermarkets despite their slow maturation making them ideal for transporting. So to be able to grow them in our own gardens is an added bonus. This passion vine is best grown in full sun (minimum 6 hours sunshine per day) and in reasonably good ground. It will need moderate irrigation throughout the warmer months for lush and lovely growth and plenty of fruits. Mulch the root area for a cooler root run. In a normal winter of rain, cut irrigation. Propagation is easy by seed or try it from semihardwood cuttings. In its first year, leave the vine to climb then pinch out its growing tip

to encourage lots of side shoots. At the end of its second, and subsequent, years prune the lateral branches, much as you would prune a grapevine. The vines, in warm climates, fruit young, often in their first year of planting. When fruits are approaching maturity, make sure to give plenty of water otherwise the fruits will shrivel and fall prematurely.
passiflora edulis or maracuyá. A large climber too, it has green glossy lobed leaves with the typical passiflora flower in white picked out in deep blue. The fruits are golf ball sized, ripening to a deep purple, and prolifically produced. Eat them when they are just starting to wrinkle. The pulp has a very exotic tropical flavour – absolutely delicious!
If your vine refuses to set fruit, the most likely cause is poor pollination usually caused by a lack of bees or wet weather when in flower. If you suspect this is your problem, use a small paintbrush to transfer pollen from one flower to another. Don´t overdo nitrogen-rich fertilisers as these will produce a lot of leaves but poor flowering and fruiting. Fertilising twice a year should be sufficient - after pruning in late winter/ early spring and again after fruiting.
This vine requires the same situation and growing conditions as the crimson passion vine. Both are ideal to weave through and disguise chain link fencing where they will quickly form a green flowering curtain. If you are growing them up a wall or pergola, provide strong supports as the mature vine will be heavy.

E.G.O HAIR AND BEAUTY See advert on page 21 Preparing your hair & skin for summer; Here are some simple but effective hints for preparing your skin and hair for the summer months. Drinking plenty of water is always important, it boosts your energy, health and appearance. Get a massage, not only will a massage improve your mental health, but it also tightens your skin and helps to hide any pesky confidence shaking dimples. Renate is always available by appointment at e.g.o. for a nice relaxing massage. Exfoliation is crucial to achieving healthy, summer skin, not only will it give

you a nice glow, but it also promotes healthy cell regeneration. Switch your soap, make sure what your using isn´t sucking the moisture out of your skin. Try using a natural soap made with natural oils such as avocado oil, olive oil or coconut oil. I can recommend our new line of natural lotions, creams and salves from Janetbotanics available now at e.g.o. Coming soon a totally natural aromatherapy facial using only organic natural products. Preparing your hair for the summer months is easier than you think and not pricey to achieve. Firstly get all your major colouring work done before the summer starts and stick to minimum colouring throughout the summer. Step up your treatment and protection regime, double the amount of conditioning treatments you do each month and make sure you apply heat protection before blow-drying or straightening your hair, serum is also a good product to use afterwards. During summer use heat, sun, sea and chlorine resistant shampoos and conditioners and also styling products. Many products on the market now have all these things available in there ingredients, if you are unsure ask your hairdresser for some

professional advise. Also regular visits to your favourite hairdresser for a good cut and intensive treatments will keep your hair in tip top condition throughout the summer months.
SOLAR SUNDAYS See advert on page 45 Pool heating pro's and con's For many of us 'Preparing for Summer' includes getting the pool ready for use and the idea of heating the pool water is often considered, so, with this in mind, here are some pro's and con's and facts and figures on some of the ways you can do this. Most commonly (and most expensively) is the air source heat pump which works in a similar way to an air conditioning unit – on the plus side you will get three to four times the Killowatt hours in heat as you use up in electricity (this sounds promising). – on the negative side, because there is so much water to heat in a pool you will initially need to run the unit for several days or up to a week nonstop to get the water warmed up (so about 50 to 100 euro in electricity for your first week) and then for several hours each day to maintain the level of heat (about 20 to 40 euro a week thereafter. (Not so promising now!) Next are three options all using
solar energy to heat the pool. You do need either a roof or ground in the sun where these panels can be located. All three will successfully heat a pool, with very low running costs of about 40 to 50 cents a day. The difference between them comes down to their efficiency in heating the water. 1) Plastic tube systems – cheapest to buy, you need an area of tubing approx equal to your pool surface area. 2) Flat solar water panel systems – you need a panel area of approx 50% of the surface area of your pool 3) Evacuated tube systems – you need a panel area of only approx 25% of the surface area of your pool. unlike the other 2 systems, evacuated tubes will heat water on a cloudy day, and will not work backwards as a radiator on cool days.

weekly or fortnightly during the winter months unless your pool is covered during this time. In this event we would visit periodically as dictated such as extreme weather conditions e.g. prolonged heavy rain to ensure the water level does not overflow, heavy winds to ensure security of the pool cover and mid-season chemical top-up. We also offer a project management service whereby we can arrange and oversee any works you may require on your property. This is particularly useful for people who are not resident here permanently and who do not want to spend their valuable holiday time at their property arranging this themselves and living through the disruption this can cause. All of our services are offered as a regular arrangement or as and when you might require eg if you are going on holiday for a period and you require any of our services while you are away. As we all know we have days when it is warmer outside than inside the house, well now you can do something about that with a very efficient system. The Sun and the warm days that we have can be used with a new hybrid solar / heat pump combination for underfloor heating or radiators, it works with the heat from the Sun and air temperature during the night, so the main advantage of this system is for 24 hours you have heat available to heat your house. The other main advantage is it can be turned off when not required in the summer months with no worry about over heating in the solar panels.

THE APLEC FESTIVAL, 27th, 28th & 29th MAY Aplec del Caragol (The Snail Festival)
T
he Aplec festival is now well-known throughout Spain and the rest of Europe, and has even been sistered with other festivals. The festival welcomes everyone interested in having a good time and getting to know the gastronomy of the city of Lleida, as well as the people who live there. The Aplec del Caragol is a gastronomy festival held in the city of Lleida each year at the end of May that focuses on that exquisite delicacy, the snail. Declared a Festival of National Interest for Tourism and a Festival of National Traditional Interest, the Snail Festival dates back to 1980, when the first festivities were organized by a group of friends on the banks of the River Segre. 12 tones of snails One thing that really stands out about this major gastronomy festival are the figures: 12 tonnes of snails. That’s the amazing quantity of gastropods that will be consumed during the three-day Festival. It will be a real feast. The main ingredient of the meals served during the Festival is the snail, which is why snail
66 The Grapevine
consumption skyrockets in May. Snails are shipped to Lleida from the rest of Spain, North Africa and South America to the delight of the Lleida snail lovers and visitors to the city. On the Festival grounds there is an area set aside for the general public to taste dishes made with different kinds of snails at reasonable prices. 12.000 snail club members La Federació de Colles de l’Aplec del Caragol (Federation of Snail Festival Social Clubs) –which organizes the Aplec– is made up of about a hundred different social clubs with members of all ages and social classes. These social clubs are the heart and soul of the festival. You can get a real feel for the vitality of these social clubs on the Sunday during the Festival, when morning parades fill the city streets with a burst of colour and music. The bright costumes and flags paraded along the Old Bridge with Seu Vella Cathedral in the background are a breathtaking sight. More than 12.000 club members and 250.000 visitors actively participate in the Snail Festival. Most of them are from Lleida, but in recent years, the number of club members from other cities and even other countries has increased. They are either invited by friends or simply
attracted by the Festival’s fame and wear their club’s special costumes during the Festival. The social clubs are made up of groups of friends, families and colleagues from work and some of them have very unusual names. Each club is assigned a space along the Camps Elisis, the fair grounds where the Festival is held. For three days, the focus is on festivities, gastronomy and leisure activities in an atmosphere of friendliness and hospitality where everyone feels at home. 3 days of festivities The Snail Festival begins on Friday afternoon and lasts until Sunday. There is something for everyone, including outdoor evening celebrations, concerts, music, “castells” (human towers), competitions and much more. Besides gastronomy, the Snail Festival offers an extensive programme of free activities open to one and all: performances, charanga music, outdoor evening celebrations, exhibitions of dances and castell human towers, and entertaining competitions. A number of events take place at the same time in different parts of the city, which means there is always something fun and exciting happening during the Snail Festival weekend.

2014 FIFA WORLD CUP World Cup in Brazil starts on 12th June
T
he 2014 FIFA World Cup will be the 20th FIFA World Cup, an international men's association football tournament that is scheduled to take place in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014. It will be the second time that Brazil has hosted the competition, the previous being in 1950. Brazil was elected unchallenged as host nation in 2007 after the international football federation, FIFA, decreed that the tournament would be staged in South America for the first time since 1978 in Argentina, and the fifth time overall. The national teams of 31 countries advanced through qualification competitions that began in June 2011 to participate with the host nation Brazil in the final tournament. A total of 64 matches are to be played in twelve cities across Brazil in either new or redeveloped stadiums, with the tournament beginning with a group stage. For the first time at a World Cup Finals, the matches will use goal-

line technology. With the host country, all world champion teams since the first World Cup in 1930 (Uruguay, Italy, Germany, England, Argentina, France and Spain) have qualified for this competition. Spain is the defending champion, having defeated the Netherlands 1–0 in the 2010 World Cup final to win its first World title. The previous four World Cups staged in South America were all won by South American teams.[3] The opening game of the 2014 Fifa World Cup will see hosts Brazil play Croatia on 12 June, 2014. The name was selected by a public vote that received responses from more than 1 million Brazilian football fans; "Brazuca" received over 70 per cent of the vote. Adidas, the official FIFA World Cup match ball supplier since 1970, took inspiration from elements of Brazilian culture to come up with a shortlist of three possible names for the ball that also included Bossa Nova and Carnavalesca.

especially ladies - being out in the fields in a group gives them a sense of freedom and security. Some paintouts will be organised specifically for those who want to participate but feel shy about everyone walking around looking at them work in a busy village! A great way to see a little bit of the beauty of a new area too.
ANDALUCIAN PLEIN AIR PAINTERS (APAP)
D
appled light filtering through the trees - a nearby stream - at one with nature - every artists dream' What is APAP? We are a group of painters, founded by Internationally renowned artist Heather Gail Harman b a hons., who love to paint outdoors - in our wonderful landscape, painting 'plein air' in the true spirit of the Impressionists. Heather is a pastel specialist who belongs to 8 major Pastel societies for which she often is invited to demonstrate her favourite medium which is completely sympathetic to outdoor working. My favourite venue was Monet's garden in Giverny, closely followed by some of the stunning painting spots in Andalucia including the Alhambra in Granada, and Ithica in Greece. Turkey was a favourite too. Ephesus was a fabulous experience. In fact every venue has something to offer, but it was the Axarquia valley that I moved to - the painting here is stunning and varied, and the climate temperate. There is nothing like working in the landscape - with a group of like minded painters, who experience (some for the first time) working from life and not just from photos just like a real artist - as I am often told. Inevitably their painting benefits; the development of the 'artists eye', just pure assimilation of the activity - a heightened sense of the landscape. This is something all great landscape painters know. ‘
80 The Grapevine
Heather has over 30 years experience teaching artists plein air, having spent many years with her husband taking painting groups all over Europe. She starts the sessions with a guidance demonstration - how to approach landscape issues - which everyone loves just to see Heather at work live - something that major International societies pay a lot to see her do. Demonstrating artists are highly valued. But as Heather says: Yes it is a romantic idea too! Everyone has a vision of the artist amongst the wild flowers engaged in a beautiful idyllic vista - sketching and painting from nature. A good time to bring out your Harrods Hamper - a glass of wine etc. An al fresco lunch in a beautiful spot where you can hear the birds and a nearby stream. Sometimes we are invited to someone's house with a beautiful view. Other times a quaint Spanish village. It really can be a very special experience.' Anyone with an interest in portraying the landscape can join in. You dont have to be an experienced painter you might only sketch and take in the experience and be inspired by those who do paint. It might even spark an interest you didn't know you had. Sketching and painting outdoors is a very affordable pastime! It is also a fantastic opportunity to take photos for studio work under the guidance of an expert. This is also for anyone in the region whether they belong to an art group already or not group. What is so important for some -
It is important that the group members feel at ease and comfortable. We do our best to provide the ambience! This is also why the tuition element is important. I teach the basics to advanced level in a local class - but outdoor work is very different. It is more relaxed and the artists senses are heightened unlike working indoors altogether. The initial introductory demonstration is important and I keep it light hearted . I advise on materials - I stock most of the materials ever needed for my groups. Most people tell me that their partners appreciate having something to buy for presents! The paintouts will be arranged during the months which are not too hot, and always where there is plenty of shade. They start in early April, and run approx one or two a month, 10.30 - 4pm with time allotted for breaks and lunch. I am looking for some idyllic spots - I have many lined up but I would love to hear from anyone who would love a paintout in their area, and can recommend a good venue - whether it be just a beautiful spot in the countryside (with nearby facilities) or something more challenging maybe from someone's private garden. Available parking is also important. I look at all ideas - I have even provided a paintout in for a special anniversary gift for a keen artist and her friends. The cost is per head and very reasonable because I want people to return and learn with me. I even provided a paintout experience for a Rotary club day back in England!' I was going to see 'Noah' tonight but the rain has put me off
Speaking ahead of this weekend's London Marathon, Mo Farah says that the British crowd are likely to give him a huge lift. That's cheating, surely?
Some girl just asked me if I thought she was wearing too much make-up. I said it depended on whether she was going to kill Batman or not. I don't bother with the Grand National any more. Last year my horse started off at 33/1 at Aintree, and ended up at 2 for 1 at Tesco. On the way home from the pub last night, I found the instructor from my karate club at the pavement edge, struggling to get to his feet. He had a broken nose, two black eyes and a broken arm. I helped him up and said, "Wow, mate, I thought you were a black belt.”
I remember the first time I saw a universal remote control, and I thought to myself. "Well this changes everything” My wife called my mobile last night "Where the hell are you? you're two hours late coming home" "I went for a drink with one of my work mates and one thing led to another" I replied. "Are you with that mental Dave?" she asked "No," I replied ""Busty Sandra”
He said, "I am, but it doesn't work against cars."
Sudoko Answers from Page 74
I woke up this morning and saw my wife sobbing on the edge of the bed. "What's the matter, dear?" I said and sat up beside her. "You came in last night extremely drunk and said how much you hated me and the kids," she cried. Utterly shocked, I said, "I can assure you, sweetheart, that I wasn't drunk."

LA VINUELA DEMOLISHION A man living in La Viñuela has been given a prison sentence and a fine for building a house illegally. He had planning permission to build a single storey, 67 square-metre building – not to be used as a residence but instead he built a two storey, 278 and 140 square metre residential house which he has now been ordered to demolish. The sentence states that the plot was on rural farmland and could not be built on. The previous owner of the land had obtained a license for a building of 67 square metres but this could not to be used as a residence. The courts found the man to have “wilfully ignored the law” and as such must demolish what was built as well as paying a fine and going to prison.

MALAGA AIRPORT Malaga airport is beginning the tourist season with four new or restored routes. The first of these
is the much requested restoration of flights to and from Heathrow airport, thus connecting Malaga with an international transport hub and the rest of the world. British Airways now flies twice a week to Malaga from London Heathrow as does Aer Lingus from Shannon in Ireland. Low cost airline Jet2 is going to fly from Belfast to Malaga twice a week. In domestic terms, Spanish airline Vueling plans to fly to Asturias from Malaga six times a week. The provision of the new routes corresponds with forecasts that during this year’s high season the number of seats available on planes to and from Malaga airport will grow by five per cent. BRITISH CONSULATE The British Counsulate and local town halls are urging British residents to register on the “padrón” to avoid difficulties accessing local services and help them to improve local services. PERFUME ROBBERIES An organised crime band has been unrelentingly hitting perfume shops in Velez-Malaga and Rincon de la Victoria; they have managed to get away with items to the value of €200,000 in only one month. All the robberies have the same hallmark: several men wearing balaclava helmets cave in the shop-window with sledge hammers and take everything they can get their hands on – they specialise in perfume shops.
