The local elections are at the end of May and hopefully you will be voting as the foreign vote can now make a big difference. Take a look on pages 20 to 24 to see what some of the candidates have to say.

NEWS IN SPAIN News from around the Country

I

t would seem that not everyone considers it a blessing for the Way of St James pilgrimage route to the holy Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela to pass by their doorstep. A village in Galicia, north-western Spain, has put up signs asking pilgrims to stop defecating in the vicinity as they trudge towards Santiago de Compostela cathedral, where the apostle Saint James is said to be buried. The unseemly side of the pilgrimage route's booming popularity has led to the appearance of signs showing a red-circled and barred squatting figure. According to the Pilgrims Office in Santiago cathedral, 238,000 people followed the Way of St James in 2014, starting in various parts of Spain, France or elsewhere in Europe. A spokesman for the Federation of Friends of the Camino de Santiago said that the organisation had not received any specific complaints from anyone

in Lastres, but did say that farmers from other points along the route had called in to say that a field of their was being used as an open-air lavatory by a large number of pilgrims.

T

he Spanish government has announced that it will allow illegal immigrants to access free public health care after banning undocumented migrants from seeing GPs as an austerity measure. Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish prime minister, announced the u-turn on Tuesday, admitting that the 2012 rule change which barred foreigners not registered with the Spanish tax office from health centres had led to a “saturation of accident and emergency wards in hospitals. Under the reform pushed through three years ago by Mr Rajoy’s conservative Popular Party, illegal immigrants were banned from the public health service unless they paid

he new director of Spain's state-funded history academy has said that the official biography of General Franco will be amended to define the man who led the country for almost four decades as a dictator. Carmen Iglesias, the director of the Royal Academy of History, announced the move in response to a controversy surrounding the existing entry on the Spanish military leader in the institution's biographical dictionary which described the Franco regime as "authoritarian but not totalitarian". Speaking at a conference in Madrid, Ms Iglesias said that the 2011 publication would be corrected to reflect the dictatorial style of the man who ruled Spain with an iron fist from the end of the country's civil war in 1939 until his death in 1975. Ms Iglesias, the first woman to preside over the academy, said the entry for Franco had created an "unnecessary controversy" which would be addressed in the first digital edition of the biographical dictionary currently being produced.

When we opt to say thank you for EVERYTHING; our comfortable bed, the rain, the sunshine, our food, the smiling supermarket cashier, the grumpy neighbour, the smell of orange blossom, the weeds in the garden, we realise that everything in our lives is a blessing and a perfect lesson in our beautiful lives.

LOVE IS THE BEST FEELING EVER hether it is our first teddy bear, our family friends and lovers, a piece of music or watching a sunrise, the sensation of gratitude, contentment and joy we experience from them makes us realise one of the easiest emotions to feel is love.

W

internal monster called the ego. It causes us to compare ourselves with others, what they think , what they know, what they do, what they have, which can only lead to disappointment and frustration because we are uniquely gloriously who we are, and they are not..

Love is not complicated, not cruel, not painful, not dangerous not a waste of time and energy. Love is the most generous, honourable and healthy state we can be in. As st Paul writes..."Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful..."

When we consider what causes us to argue, bitch and complain at those we claim to love it is invariably nothing to do with love it is about insecurity, a feeling of dis empowerment. So we indulge in hissy fits, sulks, demands that we are right and need to be in control. We are not in balance when we become arrogant and unreasonable, the system becomes acidic; muscles tense, blood pressure rises head thumps, tummy churn, causing us to become tired ache-y and unhappy.

What we may do is complicate this wonderful simple honest emotion with a rather nasty little

Love works best when it goes hand in hand with gratitude. Feeling grateful opens up our hearts and minds and when this happens the primary emotion is love and love triggers the most sensational chemical reaction within ourselves. Our brains accelerate healing, wholesome activity; our skin glows, our internal organs moderate, and yes the heart rate may increase but love is a healthy process we will come to no harm when we feel love. Being in love is beautiful, being loved is fabulous but at it most rewarding and fulfilling feeling and giving love just cannot be bettered. love is the best feeling ever .. Jane Gudge

GRAPEVINE SPEAKS TO MARI CARMEN MORENO ABOUT ARCHEZ

A

s we get closer to the 2015 municipal elections, I would like to present myself Mari Carmen Moreno, as selected candidate for the mayor's office in Archez by the Partido Popular . My team and I have great enthusiasm to work and have many projects, with the hope that the people of Archez will support us and we well be able to carry out these projects in our town. It is time for a change in Archez in order to be able to advance, progress and improve. The Archeros deserve a town with a future and equal opportunities for all, where the thing that comes first will be the citizens and their needs. We are a young, political team, ready to govern in the twentyfirst century, determined to work for Archez, defend democracy in our town, boost the economy, create jobs for all and not just the few, and ultimately improve the quality of life for all Archeros.

20 The Grapevine

Here are some of our ideas and projects that will be our priority to develop the village of Archez and put it in on parr with some of our neighbours 1 – To promote and utilise the greatest natural asset within Archez – the 'Turbilla' river. Our aim is to clean and develop the river in order to generate tourism in the form of hiking trails and local walks, plus utilise the river for the irrigation of local agriculture. 2 – To provide equal employment opportunities for all residents within Archez. All residents seeking employment will be welcomed to register on the 'Bolsa de Trabajo' (Town Hall employment list) and therefore have equal access to all jobs offered by the Town Hall. 3 – To promote all local companies and businesses within our municipality. In order to generate growth within the village, we aim to provide full support and assistance to both

4 – To improve services within the village for all our residents. We aim to provide new and improved services , all free of charge, to make life easier and provide a variety of associations and activities for everyone. These include post boxes which will be locally placed and more easily accessible for our campo residents, various sporting facilities with trained monitors for both sport and culture, plus support for existing associations along with the creation of new associations for foreign residents, youth and pensioners. We will also have an English speaking person within the Town Hall who will be dedicated to helping and assisting with the foreign residents within our community on matters such as water, electricity and rural road maintenance . These are just a few of the projects proposed by the Partido Popular for the 2015-2019 term. First and foremost though, we would like to stress that our primary intention is to govern with complete honesty and transparency, with total equality for all our citizens of Archez. Finally, I would like to invite all our foreign residents to our next meeting, which is to be held on Mon 11th May at 8pm in Bar Avenida, Archez where we can discuss in full our other projects and aims. Please come along and discuss with us any ideas you may have for the improvement of our village. We care about your thoughts and your opinions are very important to us.

Francisco Abolafio Rodriguez, Mayor of Sedella " All neighbours to me are equal" I have been on Sedella council for nearly 12 years, the last year as Mayor. I served as deputy mayor for seven years. During this time I have lived full time in the village of Sedella and was responsible for public works and maintenence of infastructure. In recent months we have made new improvements such as a new gym, work on the cemetary, a gallery, improvements to the fountain, new village lighting, new TV antenna, a park and also a new water deposit to alleviate the water problems. This has created much needed employment in the village. We hope to be able to do much more work. Health and social care is very important to me. We provide transport to hospital appointments for elderly residents. I welcome everyone to come and see me with any problem or idea they have. Translation to English is available.

DON’T WASTE THIS OPPORTUNITY!

“La Fuerza del cambio” “El sentir de Cómpeta”

It may well be that your political opinions or leanings do not always agree with the prospective candidates in the forthcoming local elections, but remember the old adage that “Local Politics is all about local issues”, and try to pick the best man for the job. There has been much promised in the past, but whether your first worry is the response time of the police, the dedicated medical staff at the Health Centre doing their best in overcrowded conditions, road repairs, signposting in the campo, or free Spanish courses for the children of expatriates who live in Cómpeta, we are now in 2015 and many people who made a choice four years ago have not seen their hopes realised. Now you will soon have the opportunity to choose again. For many residents one of their most important desires is fair representation for everyone, no matter whom you are. It is the starting point for progressive and successful local government. My name is Raúl Martín López, I am the PSOE candidate, and I have strong views about fairness and improving the quality of life for everybody in Cómpeta. One of my strongest wishes would be to put in place improved information and help facilities for everyone including a strengthened Foreigner’s department, and already I have a multinational team of residents of Cómpeta who would be dedicated to this task. Think about the benefits of that to you! I always listen to the wishes of the residents of Cómpeta and try to act accordingly. I want everything that you want. But to get these improvements in our village you need to give your support to a team of people who will put your wishes into practice. 43% of Cómpeta residents are expatriates so if you all take this opportunity it will make a huge difference to the result of the election. Don’t leave it to somebody else! Your decisions today will affect your options tomorrow. Don’t waste this opportunity.

WALKING THE LENGTH OF SPAIN Maggie Woodward on her third camino.

A

s I write this article I have walked the first seven days of the Camino Mozárabe (Grapevine deadline 15th of the month) and as you read it on or after publication day on 1 May I will have walked for over three weeks of the six to seven week journey that spans 1,200 - 1,300 km, depending on whether I make it beyond Santiago de Compostela to Finisterre. The Mozárabe has starting points in Almeria, Granada, Jaén and Málaga which converge just before Córdoba and continue to Mérida where it joins the Via de la Plata, the route from Seville. From here the camino continues to northern Spain in the city of Santiago de Compostela - the end point of a network of many ancient pilgrimage routes from all over Europe and the resting place of the remains of the apostle St James. This is my third Camino de Santiago and they are all very different. The Camino Mozárabe is much less travelled and so far I have not encountered any other pilgrims (other than my walking companion). I have been very well catered for by the Amigos

36 The Grapevine

(volunteers) of the camino who have painted sufficient yellow arrows to guide my way and organised the towns and villages en route to provide basic accommodation. On leaving Málaga at the church of Santiago, it was a long trek through the city and the suburbs to the village of Junta de Los Caminos, after which point the route passed entirely through the beautiful countryside. Day 2 was also entirely off road, and day 3 took me over El Torcal and into Antequera. Since then I have been walking through vast areas of olive groves and am now two days away from Córdoba and hoping that since the various routes of the Mozárabe have converged (in Baena), I might meet some other pilgrims. I have walked through a variety of weather conditions including lovely sunshine, not so lovely rain and very eerie deep mist up and over El Torcal. The rain brought sticky mud, so horrendous that I could hardly walk uphill due to the weight of my boots and the lack of traction that had me sliding backwards almost as far as I stepped forward.

I have walked an average of 27 km per day over the last seven days, carrying everything I need on my back. This being my third camino, I have refined my packing list to a tried and tested minimum. My pack weighs around 8 kilos plus water supplies and (other than hoisting it on) I am not really that aware of it. I have built a lot of 'muscle memory' over the last couple of years and my body now knows what is expected of it. I have to say though, that I am glad I've had the opportunity to take practice hikes in the mountains around Cómpeta and Canillas de Albaida because I am coping much better with the serious elevations and descents we are encountering than my urban trekker companion. I am very happy to have a walking partner as this would be a lonely route for a solo walker. To be honest, we don't actually walk together very often, as we each have our own pace, but it is nice to have someone to touch base with in the evenings. While I am walking my partner David Wolfe is collecting sponsorship money in aid of CUDECA Cancer Hospice. I know this coincides with the 'Walk for Life' event, also raising funds for the same good cause, but hopefully the very generous people of Cómpeta and Canillas (and even further afield) will find it in their hearts to donate in support of my efforts. (All funds raised will be handed to CUDECA - I am totally funding the walk myself.) I am posting to my blog each day with lots of photos of the countryside and wild flowers. If you would like to join me on my journey, take a look at my blog, and if you would like to receive an email whenever I make a new post, just sign up at the top of the right margin - I will be glad of your company! http://www.magwood.me Maggie Woodward

Having Erosion Problems?

e Now is th nt la time to p We have a GREEN solution r a p ed to be pre We are suppliers of a unique non-invasive for the s in sterile grass called Vetiver, a r ll fa (Chrysopogon Zizaioides, variety Monto)

It is used for stopping erosion. This grass has an incredibly strong vertical root system and grows to the height of about 1.5 meters with roots 3-4 meters deep in one year. The Vetiver plants are 1.25 Euro each. We also have Lemon grass available now for 1 Euro each. This grass needs no special soil, fertilizer or care other than regular watering for approximately the first 3 months or until the plants are established. To plant a slip (one stalk) you just make a small hole, and put the slip in. Nothing labour intensive. The plants are planted approximately 30cm apart, so the cost for 30 linear meters is 125 euro, a very cost effective way of stopping erosion. The Vetiver Grass can handle a great deal of water, or no water at all once established. The roots grow 3-4 meters deep in one year and the roots have the strength of 1.6 mil steel

increasing poverty because of the crisis. The country's murder rate in 2013 was 0.6 per 100,000 people, one of the lowest in western Europe. There were 302 murders in the country that year, down from 364 a year earlier. The crime rate per 100,000 people was 46.1, down from 48.0 in 2012 Police received 54,734 complaints related to sexual violence while 86,034 violent robberies were recorded, down 10.94 percent on 2012, according to Spain’s interior ministry Surviving cancer Spain's health system continues to be world-renowned and its organ donor system is generally held up to be the best in the world. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.

Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es

The mean average monthly salary in Spain in 2013 was just €1,324 while 34 per cent of the country's 16,682,861 employees earned the minimum wage of €645. Tax office figures show that almost half of Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called

KLIMACENTRO Maintenance of our air conditioning units

A

gesture that will save us a lot of money.

Most cooling units are also capable of heating our home, but also have much lower consumption than any other system powered by electricity and are 4-5 times more efficient. So if we don't feel comfortable with our heating, it is best to get a professionals advice. Nothing produces more power and consumes less than a modern Inverter System. You should have your systems checked periodically for problems to maintain the units efficiency and extend its life. How does it guarantee the absence of fungi and bacteria? Our air conditioning moves thousands of litres of air. As the air

44 The Grapevine

passes through the unit it leaves particles and organisms that can reproduce and form colonies. This can have a harmful effect on our health. This is why it is the most important thing in our house to keep clean... it is the air we breathe!

Why we remove odours Equipment duly treated with products specifically for air conditioning guarantees the absence of odours caused by micro-organisms. This helps us to locate other problems with the drain and filtration. It will also make our environment healthier.

Why do I need a maintenance check now? Because your unit will use less energy. An air conditioning unit is a heat exchanger, ie. it takes in hot air and gives out cold in summer, it produces the opposite effect in winter. This operation is performed with two units, one inside and one outside of our home. Its efficiency depends of how clean our units are, it will not stop working because it is dirty but it will use a lot more electricity.

In summary Maintenance will allow us to locate problems undetectable to the user, such as operating without the proper refrigerant, which will result in increased consumption and the possibility of damage to the compressor. Equipment properly installed and working under normal conditions will need maintenance at least every two years. Good maintenance is quality for our health and savings for our pocket.

From May you can also buy it from Sugar & Spice and La Boutique de Cómpeta. The book costs €8 and all proceeds (less printing costs) are donated to Day for Life.

Martin Thurlow provided this recipe. It is delicious, easy to make, and tastes just like your favourite take-away. Ingredients 1 pork fillet Marinade 5 tbsp light soy sauce 3 tbsp dark soy sauce 5 tbsp runny honey 3 tbsp sugar 1 tsp five spice powder ½ glass Chinese rice wine (sherry will do if you can’t find any)

2) Heat the oven to 210° C and place the meat, basted with marinade on a rack over a roasting tin with a couple of centimetres of water in it. Roast for 20 minutes, then baste, turn the meat over and reduce the heat to 180° C. Roast for another 10 minutes, then baste and turn again and roast for a final ten minutes. 3) Transfer the meat to a plate, empty the tin of water and line it with foil. Place the meat and rack back on the tin, then brush it liberally with the glaze and put it under the grill for about 5 minutes until the glaze is glossy. Turn the meat, glaze again and put back under the grill until the other side is also glossy and starting to caramelise. Store in the fridge but give it 30 minutes at room temperature before serving.

Moreno's offers English beers and ciders and German lagers. Twice monthly there are live music evenings with the best local bands which include Zimmerz, Chicago Jim Trio and Rivermen. These nights are excellent fun and often pull a crowd. If music nights aren't your thing Moreno's offers many other events and special evenings throughout the month such as quiz nights, disco nights, murder mystery nights and much more. It is also available for private parties, reunions, business meetings and birthdays. Moreno's is a stylish environment. The relaxing lounge offers a stylish red and black interior with leather sofas and chairs and wifi is available for customers wishing to use the internet on their own devices. The interior is fully air conditions and there is a friendly atmosphere with friendly staff. They have a Sky Sports surround sound system which shows not only football and rugby but all major sporting events with of course English commentary.

COME AND MEET OSCAR! Find him at Morenos in Puente Don Manuel.

I

n the village of Puente Don Manuel Moreno's bar restaurant is very popular with the locals and tourists and so I understand is their barman Oscar! Oscar is Spanish but speaks perfect English and brings a great personality to the premises. Besides Oscar other reasons why Moreno's remains so popular is because of its food and regular entertainment. It has recently launched its stunning new menu which includes snacks, platters, regular specials and breakfasts. The specials that are already a hit

54 The Grapevine

are the Langoustine Prawn Salad, Thai chilli with noodles, English Pork Pie and coslew and Pulled Pork. If you only want to stop for a coffee why not try one of their delicious cakes with it such us cheesecake, lemon meringue pie, orange rum and raisin cake, carrot cake or the most popular Bake well tart! Moreno's is open 7 days a week 10am until late and the kitchen is open 11 until 4pm. They have free tapas with every drink on a Sunday, an outside terrace and inside formal and informal dinning.

Trip Adviser Review “Moreno's is a cafe - bar near to Puente Don Manuel and on the cross road to Periana and Venta Baja. We had a nice lunch with a couple of wines, and had change from 15 euro. Not each - the total for the two of us. The bar is English owned but the staff are mainly Spanish. Everyone spoke English and the food could be as simple a a tapas to a main meal. Air conditioned and modern. Certainly something to give a try, we will again Morenos has been open for 8 years and 3 years ago was taken over by new management but it remains a favourite in the area along with Oscar! .

WEIRD AND WONDERFUL Strange News from Around the World

S

ales of the traditional treat are soaring after years in the baked-goods wilderness, thanks not least to The Great British Bake Off. Since as long ago as the 1970s, fancier alternatives such as fresh doughnuts, cream cakes, muffins and flapjacks have dominated the market. Only at Easter, when the version known as the hot cross bun is on sale, do tea cakes make an impact. But now they are back as an afternoon treat, filled with currants and served toasted with lashings of butter. Tea cake sales are up by a quarter, according to data from retail analysts Kantar. And Tesco last reported it had seen even stronger growth with a sales surge of 42 per cent in the past year – the equivalent of an extra 1.5 million tea cakes sold by the supermarket giant. Tesco bakery buyer Andy Dixon said: “The teacake has again become one of the nation’s trendiest bakery treats after taking a backseat to American-style tray bakes like muffins and flapjacks. “The revival of afternoon tea as well as a surging interest in bakery items brought about by the massive popularity of TV’s Great British Bake Off have helped bring the teacake back into fashion.

P

illows are great if you're sleeping, but, frankly, their conversational skills are lacking! Japanese inventor Koichi Uchimura has attempted to solve

that problem by developing the "Ita-Supo," a talking pillow that verbally responds to the user's touch, RocketNews24.com reports. The pillowcase features the face and torso of a blonde female anime character on the outside and two sensors placed in pouches located in the breast and crotch area. Massage the pillow's cartoon breasts and it will coo in delight, saying things like, "What if I start loving you even more than I already do?" according to Anime News Network. Get too grabby and you will hear the Japanese equivalent of "Hey! That hurts!" or "Not there!" Uchimura is currently raising money to market the "ItaSupo" through a crowd-funding campaign. People can purchase it for around $167, but be warned: Your other pillows could get jealous!

S

uper strong Wang Xiaobei, 81, stunned talent show viewers when she clamped her jaw round a rope attached to the front of her car and began successfully pulling. And it was no mean feat because the one-tonne car was carrying her friend, grandson and his wife. Appearing on the Chinese equivalent of Britain's Got Talent, called 'Amazing Chinese', the pensioner told the host she had been practising for the stunt. Ms Wang, from Shandong in north

China, said: "I have a healthy body and healthy mind and I don't think there's any difference between how I feel now and how I felt when I was younger." As the grandmother pulled the car over the finishing line in just 38 seconds, the audience erupted into applause.

A

young “Del Boy” market trader has been caught flogging dodgy perfumes labelled as Chamele No 5.. In deals that were in fact too good to be true the young market trader was caught flogging boxes of what appeared to be 96 Chanel No 5 for less than a tenner. An unhappy customer discovered the perfume bottle inside what looked like legitimate looking boxes. In fact what was inside was “Chamele”. The disgruntled customer then complained to a market inspector. Police were called but the dodgy dealer managed to scarper before they arrived at Surrey Street market, in Croydon, south London Councillor Tony Newman, leader of Croydon Council, said: “It’s a shame this rogue chose to target Surrey Street for his criminal activities. “Our historic market is the workplace of many good, decent traders, making an honest living, and they certainly don’t want this sort of thing happening in their midst.

As we all know we have days when it is warmer outside than inside the house, well now you can do something about that with a very efficient system. The Sun and the warm days that we have can be used with a new hybrid solar / heat pump combination for underfloor heating or radiators, it works with the heat from the Sun and air temperature during the night, so the main advantage of this system is for 24 hours you have heat available to heat your house. The other main advantage is it can be turned off when not required in the summer months with no worry about over heating in the solar panels.

"I ran a half marathon" sounds so much better than: "I quit halfway through a marathon"

New owners have taken over the snow globe factory where I work. I hope they don't come in and try and shake everything up.

One day, shortly after joining the PGA tour in 1965, Lee Trevino, a professional golfer and married man, was at his home in Dallas, Texas, mowing his front lawn, as he always did. A lady driving by in a big, shiny Cadillac stopped in front of his house, lowered the window and asked: Excuse me, do you speak English?

My wife asked me what my plans are for Easter. The same as Jesus: disappear on Friday, show up on Monday.

It wasn't until my 13th birthday that I realised what a heavy smoker my dad was. I turned into a cat earlier. Don't ask meow.

Every time a balloon burst the fire alarm went off.

Computer: "Enter new password.

I got in at 3am last night. My wife was up waiting for meIf looks could kill, I'd be a dead man.

Lee responded: Yes Ma'am, I do. The lady then asked: What do you charge to do yard work? Lee said: Well, the lady in this house lets me sleep with her. The lady hurriedly put the car into gear and sped off.

My wife told me that the doctor said she'd be dead within a year if she didn't give up the whiskey and what did I think. Well, I gave it to her straight.

Me: "Beef stew Computer: "Sorry, not stroganoff"

She wasn't angry, she's just that ugly.

recognisable feature – brick- red in colour. They can fly short distances (and are often carried further by the wind) when searching for host fruit but, within an orchard situation with plenty of food possibilities, they will not normally move more than 150m. The female lays eggs in batches of around a dozen, just under the skin of the fruit, and, in a lifetime can lay 300 eggs. Under optimum conditions, a life cycle can be completed within 21 days. Activity will stop at temperatures below 10C.

THE MEDITERRANEAN FRUIT FLY – MEDFLY – CERATITIS CAPITATA Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh

T

he Medfly originated in sub-Saharan Africa and in the last 160 years has spread through most tropical and sub-tropical countries Southern Europe, the Middle East, large parts of Australia, most of Africa, Southern and Central America and Hawaii. In Spain, they are a huge problem throughout the south and along the Mediterranean coastline. Our habit of transporting fruits from one continent to another has given them a free ride! The Medfly has spread more than any other type of fruit fly and is now considered to be the biggest agricultural pest in the world.

84 The Grapevine

It has achieved this position because it is more cold tolerant than most species and has a huge range of host fruits – over 260 fruits, vegetables and nuts. Thinskinned ripe juicy fruits are preferred, especially citrus, stone fruits such as apricot and peach, fruits with small seeds such as apple and pear as well as peppers, tomatoes and figs. The adult Medfly is somewhat smaller than the common house fly, measuring around 5mm long. It is yellowish in colour with a brown tinge to the lower abdomen and has wings with brown and yellow markings. The eyes are the most

Within a few days of egg laying the maggots or larvae will hatch out and it is their feeding on the fruit pulp that destroys our potential crops. The larvae will eat for two or three weeks, reaching 1cm long. Their tunnelling through the fruits allows entry to bacterial and fungal infections. The fruits slowly decompose. Once mature, the larvae they will come to the surface of the fruit, drop to the ground, tunnel under and pupate. This is when chickens are incredibly useful!! The adult fly will emerge with 8 to 45 days; they then require a few days to mature, copulate and start laying eggs. There is evidence that the larval time varies from fruit to fruit. In a peach it is around 10 days but is considerably longer in citrus, reaching up to as much as 20 days in lemons and limes under the same climatic conditions. This is probably because the larvae need the sweetness of the fruit to mature sexually. They prefer thin-skinned succulent fruits, preferably yellow/orange colouring and they are very susceptible to lack of food, with some 50% of young flies dying within the first two months. The sequence of attacks on fruits within Spain is: 1st generation in winter to oranges and mandarins; 2nd generation in spring to early apricots; 3rd

generation in late spring/early summer to early peaches, nectarines. During summer, 4th generation attack late peaches, nectarines, pears, mangoes and papayas. The 5th generation, during September, attack figs, apples and grapes. During October, the sixth generation, attack prickly pear fruits, dates and early citrus. If the weather stays good, a seventh generation will attack persimmons (kaki) and citrus. Other fruits such as plums, loquats (nispero), cherries, pomegranate, avocadp, guava and custard apples are not immune either. Commercially they are the most damaging pest. Huge sums of money have been and are being spent on control but, even so, in certain areas commercial growers avoid varieties of fruits that mature late because of the sheer numbers of Medflies. Damage to the environment and, of course, ultimately us, is immense and

immeasurable. As gardeners, we love to grow our own fruit and veg and nothing is more disappointing than cutting into freshly picked fruit and finding it inedible. We have the answer and it's environmentally friendly – the Ceratrap. It's a plastic pot that hangs in a fruit tree. It contains an attractant that the female flies find irresistible and they are drawn into the pot where they drown, unable to escape. The pots should be hung at a height of approximately 1.5m and on the sunny side of the tree. One pot will protect an area of approx. 150m2 and the effect will last for around three months. Then the pots can be refilled. Simple, clean and effective. Price €8.50 each pot at Viveros Florena.

COMPETA ZUMBATHON The first Competa Zumbathon took place on Saturday, 11th April in the magnificent Sports Hall as part of the “Day for Life” challenges to raise funds for Cudeca. Over sixty people of all nationalities; Spanish, Belgian, Danish, Dutch, British and German, including our Mayor came along to join in the two hour marathon, have fun, burn upto 1700 calories and support our Cancer charity. The Zumba was led by our local teacher, Nicola Purkis McEvoy ably assisted by her two helpers, Karin Timmermans and Michelle Hotten. A further three enthusiastic Zumba teachers from Nerja joined us and led some of the dances; Gema Correas Herrero, Jotxan Ruiz Quinones and Sara Rodriguez Hernandez. After one hour of Zumba, we had a short break when the local Competa

Spanish dancers gave us a lovely display of local dances receiving many loud applauses. There was also the opportunity to purchase a huge selection of goodies, sponsored by Jenny King from the tuck shop. The volunteers sold lots of water!!!! In addition to the sixty people participating in the Zumba, a further twenty nine residents made generous donations or came along to watch and the total amount raised was 472 euros, a magnificent achievement from a morning full of Zumba and fun. It was wonderful to have so many different nationalities of Competa joining together for Cudeca whose aim is to provide specialised palliative care to people of all nationalities throughout the province of Malaga suffering from noncurable cancer. Last year Cudeca supported over one thousand patients. The success of the first Zumbathon indicates that this may become an annual event as part of Day for Life. Thank you to Nicola and everyone involved. Cindy Jones Cudeca Volunteer - Competa
