Editors Note... Don't groan, but yes this month there is a focus on Christmas! Probably slightly selfishly I wanted to know what was on offer as I have family coming to stay at the beginning of December. I have to know where to get my turkey and crackers from as we are doing a pretend Christmas Day. I also need to have completed my Christmas shopping as we will be sending both presents and cards back with them for other relatives. Then once the family have left I will be looking to have a Christmas lunch out with friends. I wanted to book that as soon as, in order to avoid any disappointment on the big day. So after researching for pages 52 to 61 I am now sorted for the festive season... well nearly! Front Cover: Gampas Pil Pil is a famous tapas of prawns served in a hot, sizzling sauce of garlic, chilli & olive oil.

Finally, a thanks to my younger brother who for my birthday gave me laser eye surgery! I had the surgery in the middle of October and the results are fabulous. I hated glasses and I wasn’t great with contacts and now I can see almost perfectly without either. A wonderful present, I would definitely recommend it ... so thanks little brother!! NEWS IN SPAIN News from around the Country

M

adrid's buskers will be forced to endure an XFactor style audition before being allowed to perform on the capital's streets under new legislation introduced in October. But even successful applicants will be banned from playing during the tradition siesta time between three and five o'clock each afternoon. City hall has drawn up new guidelines in a bid to improve the standard of street musicians in the capital as more and more of Spain's unemployed resort to desperate measures in a bid to make a living. Potential street musicians must be approved by a panel of three judges, two musically trained officials and a council worker, in order to obtain a free performance licence valid for a year. The auditions will take place throughout November at the Conde Duque cultural centre.

O

ne of the largest corruption scandals in Spain’s recent history has come to a conclusion, nearly eight years after it first came to light, with the conviction of 53 people for property fraud and bribery in Marbella. Juan Antonio Roca, the former town planning chief and

the mastermind behind the farreaching corruption scandal that rocked the Costa del Sol resort was sentenced to 11 years in jail and fined €240 million (£200 million) after being found guilty on charges of money laundering, bribery, fraud and other offences. He was blamed for running a network suspected of collecting €2.4 billion of laundered money for those involved, much of which has yet to be traced. Two former mayors of Marbella, Julián Muñoz and Marisol Yagüe, were also handed prison sentences of two years and seven years respectively, and a ban from holding public office as well as fines of more than €2 million.

J

udge Javier Albar was asked to decide whether a driving school in Zaragoza was discriminatory for offering male learners a cheaper deal on a course of driving lessons that their female counterparts. The offer, made in November 2011, advertised a deal where for 665 euros male learners aged between 18-22 could get as many classes as necessary to pass their driving test. The price for women of the same age, on the other r

hand, was 850 euros with the argument that on average they needed five lessons more than men to obtain their driving licence. After a flurry of complaints a consumer rights group fined the Gasque driving school of Zaragoza 4,000 euros for sexual discrimination and demanded they drop the disparate offers. But the driving school appealed to the courts presenting research that backed up their claims that women needed more lessons than men to achieve the same standard. The judge agreed, overturned the fine and ruled that a different price for courses offered to male and female learners wasn’t discriminatory. In his ruling he cited official data from Spain’s Directorate of Traffic that proved “every single year, men displayed greater dexterity and better open road skills” in their driving tests than their female counterparts.

S

pain’s government may face a compensation bill of a €1.3 billion euro (£1.1 billion) if it is forced to permanently close an off-shore gas storage plant that has been linked to a wave of minor earthquakes to hit the Spanish Mediterranean coast in recent weeks. More than 500 minor tremors, the largest measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale, have been felt in towns across a 200-km (125-mile) stretch of coastline from southern Catalonia to the northern Valencia region since mid-September.The quakes, which have occurred in a region not normally known for seismic activity, have been blamed on the recent injection of gas into a depleted oil reservoir 1.7 kilometres (1.05 miles) under the sea bed at an off-shore storage facility located 22 km from the coast. Now, prosecutors are investigating whether the Spanish authorities could be held responsible for negligence after it emerged that research warning of potential earthquakes was ignored prior to the plant’s approval.

ALL SAINTS DAY Dia de todos los Santos 1st November

A

ll Saints Day in Spain (Todos Los Santos) takes place on November 1st. It is a very important national public holiday when people from all over the country return to their town or village to lay flowers on the graves of deceased relatives. There are few religious days that mean quite so much to the ordinary people of Spain as this solemn festival.

floral displays. Roads around cemeteries will be crammed with traffic, flower sellers line the streets and, in many places, additional public transport services are organised. Although this might sound over commercialised and hectic it is actually, for most people, a day of high emotions. The Eucharist, or Mass, will often be performed in the cemetery several times during the day.

The Spanish consider themselves fortunate in having two birthdays each year, rather like the British queen. They have their customary birthday to commemorate the day they were born but they also celebrate on the day of their personal patron saint. For most people their patron saint will be the one after whom they were named.

In common with many festivals throughout the country there are a number of special dishes which are associated with All Saints’ Day. Chief amongst these is the tradition of eating roasted chestnuts, castañas, alongside small almond cakes, pannellets. The chestnut element of the tradition comes from the legend of Maria La Castañada, a chestnut seller, about whom there are many stories. The almond cakes apparently are reminders of the days when home made cakes and offerings were left with the bodies of the dead. At this time of the year you will also see in the shops huesos

However, on November 1st each year, the Feast of All of the Saints is held and this particular public holiday centres around remembering dead family members. Most people will visit the graves of relatives and decorate them with elaborate

12 The Grapevine

Back in the 10th century All Saints’ Day was celebrated on May 13th but Popes Gregory III and IV moved it to its present date because they wanted to neutralise the pagan festival, the forerunner of Halloween, that was held at that time of the year. The ancient Gaels believed that this time of the year, sometimes thought of as the Celtic New Year, was when the boundaries between the living and the dead disappeared so the Church linked this with All Saints’ Day. Initially, the time was a period of fasting as well as the holding of vigils. What began as a time of remembrance of the Christian martyrs evolved into the present custom of remembering all the dead. The celebrations surrounding All Saints’ Day are especially notable in the Cádiz province of Andalucía. In Cádiz itself Tosantos will involve a colourful street market, processions and many children’s activities and will begin a few days before November 1st. In villages and towns throughout the province candle lit processions, roast chestnuts and, very often, anise liqueurs characterise the feast. One of the All Saints’ traditions across Spain is the performing of the play Don Juan Tenorio, written by José Zorrilla. The final act of this portrayal of Don Juan’s choice between salvation or hell is set in a cemetery with the legendary lover lamenting over his betrayal of his dead lover. There are times when it is easy to forget how catholic Spain can be but All Saints’ Day is a powerful reminder of the importance of religion, and of the family, even in the modern age.

f you thought you had a problem ordering your dog to sit, spare a thought for the organisers of a world record attempt trying to persuade hundreds to do so at the same time. The Kennel Club gathered 635 dogs to take part in the challenge, which required the animals to sit or lie still for two minutes. The current record stands at 627 – set by the RSPCA at Windsor Great Park in 2005. The animals were lined up alongside their owners for the challenge at Rockingham Castle in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, on Friday. But the effort ended in failure after 34 animals were disqualified by independent adjudicators, meaning only 601 managed the feat.

or 20 years, more than a thousand Hasidic Jews have taken their summer break in the seaside resort of Aberystwyth, where they rented student village accommodation for two weeks. But Aberystwyth University said this year that lit candles were banned in the houses on health and safety grounds following “more than one incident” involving the group.

As lighting candles is part of the weekly Shabbat tradition in the Jewish religion, most of the holidaymakers are now taking their break at other destinations with university accommodation. Myer Rothfeld, a senior member of the Hasidic community, told the Cambrian News: “The people of this area are very respectful and we hold them in great esteem and love coming here. “We’ve tried everything possible to get round it, offering to supply our own fire insurance, to use lanterns or even to put the candles on sand, but they keep saying ‘no’.

But unfortunately the 12 courses won't be served by a waiter or brought to you on beautiful china plates. Instead, you'll get your feast all mushed up in a tin can. How appetising. The student has combined 12 courses, including ricotta ravioli, roast pork belly, rib-eye steak and french onion soup, to protest against food production methods. n the midst of the Vietnam War, after a bomb destroyed his family home and killed his wife and two of his sons, a desperate father grabbed his infant boy and fled into the forest. There they stayed for 40 years, where, if Vietnamese media are to be believed, they lived in the wild and made no attempts to contact the outside world. Viet Nam News, an English news service, reports locals from the Tra Xinh Commune in Tay Tra District spotted the two several days ago and alerted police, who found them in a remote patch of jungle, living in a handmade hut, lifted several feet off the forest floor. The father, Ho Van Thanh, who is now 82, was reportedly quite ill and brought to a hospital. His son, Ho Van Lang, 41, also emerged, and is said to be overwhelmed by his new surroundings.

ew York City's transit authority says a conductor found a small dead shark aboard a subway train in Queens. The conductor asked passengers to leave the car and closed it off. The train continued to the end of the line, and then a supervisor placed the shark in a garbage bag and put it in the trash. Photos on the blog Gothamist depict the shark on the subway. It appears to be about 4 feet long, has a cigarette in its mouth with a fare card and Red Bull can nearby. Transit officials say they were aware of the photos but are making no effort to find the person who posted them. The transit authority says it has "better things to do."

RASTERS OLD & NEW COUNTRY MARKET Camping Bar Restaurant every Wednesday

A

new ‘Rastro Old & New Country Market’ has evolved as a result of a ‘pop up shop’ idea which worked well last year at Camping Bar Restaurante La Vinuela and now the demand to expand the idea is taking place each Wednesday from 10 am to 3 pm. The location of the market is adjacent to the Camping Bar/Restaurante (big yellow building) in a great setting overlooking Lake Vinuela in the heart of the Axarquia. A core of experienced traders attend regularly with a further mix of vendors bringing a different selection of goods to spice things up so customers will see different things each week. The Camping Bar/Restaurante provides a great 'menu del dia' especially for the market for 7€, which allows visiting the market more of a day event, especially as the market has a later start and finish time than others so it makes sense to stay around for some lunch! The stalls themselves can be found down to the side of the Camping Bar/Restaurante on the campsite itself which is an established and pretty area. Stall

holders are in shady plots and it is easy to wander between them all. Disabled access is not a problem at this market and parking is excellent for countless cars. The intention of the ‘Rastro Old & New Country Market’ is for it to be more casual, with the later opening and closing times. As well as the local customers and folk that travel from further afield to visit the market, it lends itself well for social groups who can spend time browsing and buying, and enjoying lunch or a drink on the terrace overlooking the lake. The experienced traders live locally and offer well priced goods including, costume jewellery, gift ideas, clothing both new and retro, a great selection of preserves, and men will finally be looked after by Peter with a fantastic selection of jeans and shirts to fit all, high quality and at affordable prices, plus great items and ideas for household interiors, plus lots more and different each week! The market would like to encourage the promotion of local business, they currently have Kritzlynn who attends on a regular

basis who can give you all the information on her personal and tailor made tours to Morocco and is now organising for Christmas escapes...she is also thinking of offering belly dance classes if she has enough takers! The market has a resident local fruit and veg man, who is a real character, and are looking for more local produce, such as plants, herbs, pottery, ceramics, anyone out there that can help with those items or would like to attend with other items as a stall holder please e mail: marketcampingbar@gmail.com or contact 650380954. Also in atttendance at the market is the Axarquia Animal Rescue Charity, (who raised €200 on their first market day) , and the Bikers arm of the British Legion, who are always good fun. The new ‘Rastro Old & New Counry Market’ at Camping La Vinuela embraces the beauty of the surroundings, and provides locals and visitors with something that is a bit different...come along and spend some time there...’cause it’s worth it! Every Wednesday 10 am to 3 pm

ACTION FOR ANIMALS A remarkable story

T

his month we'd like to share the heart-warming story of a remarkable young couple, Daniel Pinas and Maria Mar Lopez Ruiz, from Cómpeta, whose love of animals has led them to adopt five abandoned dogs in a very short space of time. Here is their story in their own words: “The first dog we rescued was Pira, who we released from the dog pound in Motril. She was very malnourished and had been given only six months to live. Next came Chiki, a bodeguera, who we found wandering on the Cómpeta road after a day of horrendous storms. Chiki has had one of the toes from her back paw amputated but still has a real zest for life! Thanks to Action for Animals we then learnt about Chica, who is a very intelligent dog. Chica's last owner had died and although she

32 The Grapevine

was being fed by kind neighbours, she was lonely. We are so happy that we adopted her and that she is now part of a family once again. We recently found Gusy, a German Shepherd, up at Venta de Palma. Her ears were badly infected and she was unable to walk properly due to malformation of the bones of her front paws caused by malnutrition. The local police had already been called to take her to the dog pound, but instead, we took her home with us. She is now greatly improved and although she is still timid she is very loving towards us. Cookie, our final rescue dog was found by us on the AlgarroboSayalonga road in very bad condition, suffering from heat stroke and covered in ticks. She had a large lump on her abdomen which turned out to be a hernia in her uterus, requiring an operation. Thanks to Nina at Action for Animals and Juan of Naturvets

she is now doing well and enjoying her new home. We are really happy with all the dogs we have rescued. They seem very grateful and give us so much love!" Action for Animals have covered the costs of many of the vets bills for Pira, Chiki, Chica, Gusy and Cookie. Please help us to continue helping abandoned animals by shopping in our charity shop and donating your unwanted items for us to sell. We look forward to seeing you soon! Action for Animals Charity Shop, Avenida de la Constitución 59, Cómpeta. Opening hours: 10.00-14.00 Monday to Friday and 10.00-13.30 Saturday

Aloe arborescens, Red Hot Poker Aloe. There are around 350 species of aloes, mostly from Africa; many have medicinal properties with a long history of traditional use. They are succulents so will thrive on little water, plenty of sunshine and general neglect! They may be damaged when temperatures fall below freezing, especially with snow/ice. The main plant can reach around 2m tall producing

Medically: aloe arborescensis considered to be one of the best in the fight against and prevention of cancer. Try this simple protocol. The Treatment of Cancer: 350 g. aloe arborescens - use the whole leaf. 500 g. organic honey 50 ml.spirit such as brandy, vodka, grappa etc. (to preserve) Cut leaves from large plants and always use those lower down the plant – the potency is in the more mature leaves. Wipe with a dry cloth and cut the spines off the leaf edges. Add the honey and

If you are suffering with cancer, take 1 tablespoon 3 times a day 30 mins. before meals. Repeat for 10 days; have a 10 day break and start the process over again. The dosage can be doubled after the first take. It is important to carry on taking the protocol until the cancer is in complete remission.

may be experienced but these will ease within a very few days. Aloe arborescens is not a miracle performer on its own. To cure cancer you need to change habits of a lifetime. Exclude toxins from your diet, your home, your lifestyle. It's us that can create the miracle. Lyciumbarbatum, also known as Goji Berry, Wolfberry. Native to Tibet and Mongolia, though known in Europe for centuries, the gojihas only recently been acclaimed as one of the new 'superfoods'. The plants are remarkably heat/cold/wind/salt tolerant, requiring nothing more than a fairly sunny position and reasonable ground. They can reach 2m high and wide but can be pruned. Space plants 2m apart. Trim off lower growth to keep a clean trunk up to 30cm high; at 60cm high, start pinching the growing tips to achieve bushiness. Plants begin to bear fruits in their 2nd or 3rd year. Crop by shaking the bush and collect the fruits on nets. Handling them can bruise and blacken the delicate fruits. Sun-dry to form little red raisins. Always prune after harvesting as berries form on new growth. Medically: Gojiberries, weight for weight, contain 500 times more vitamin C than oranges. Chinese medicine claims the berry restores the chi, counteracting chronic fatigue. They are extremely high in anti-oxidants promoting longevity, improving circulation, eyesight, sexual function and fertility. They boost our immune systems, inhibit growth of cancerous tumours, and help neutralize the effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. They also balance blood pressure and blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol and maintain normal cell growth. They improve general health and restore zest for life. Internally: Eat the dried berries alone or make up a fruit/berry

snack. Also good added to cereals, muesli etc. The taste is somewhat sweet/sour. Work up to around ¼ cup daily, but do start gradually – their strength can be a little alarming at first. An infusion can also be made. Contraindications: An old Tibetan saying claims that the only side effect of eating gojisis that you will laugh more! If on conventional blood pressure medication, check with your doctor because levels may need to be adjusted (lessened) as the level of goji berries is increased. Take care where you sourceyour berries; many Chinese berries are now heavily contaminated with chemicals, heavy metals etc. Wash the fruits in water and vinegar, then rinse and dry. Or better still - grow your own, organically! Perillafrutescens, also known as Beefsteak Plant, Wild Coleus, Purple Mint orShiso. Perilla, a member of the mint family, is native to mountainous areas of Asia and abundantly grown and used in Korea, India, Thailand, China and Japan. It likes an open aspect and moderately good soil with some moisture. With deep purple stems and purple-red tinted leaves, it is an attractive and extremely aromatic addition to the herb garden with nuances of basil, mint and fennel and much loved by bees and butterflies. It will attain 1m in height. Summer flowering with numerous small pink to lavender blossoms, harvesting of the soft leaf tips can take placeany-time or cut and dry the stems when flowering for drying. Medically: One of the most popular Chinese herbs, documented use of it goes back to 1110 AD. It is a nutritionally rich herb with very high levels of calcium, phosphorus, iron and vitamins A, C and K Traditionally it is believed to be anti-carcinogenic and helps clear excess sodium nitrates from the body. It is often

used to ease morning sickness during pregnancy and nausea in general. But its main use is as an anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory. Hayfever and asthma sufferers find that perillatea greatly relieves their symptoms. Recent research suggests its use to counter allergies caused by seafood, peanuts and bee stings . Fresh: Use as a basil substitute. Add to salads, soups or chop into stir fries. The flavour combines well with chilli, soy sauce, tomato dishes, grilled meats and soft cheeses. Dried: An infusion of the plant is very beneficial for the treatment of allergies, asthma, coughs, colds and any nausea-related problems, food poisoning etc. Add 1 teaspoon of dried herb to a cup of water and infuse for 10 mins. An adult can drink up to 3 cups daily. The steam is also very beneficial for sinus problems. The seeds can also be pressed to produce an omega 3 rich oil. Contraindications: The herb can have a slightly sedative effect so take care if driving or using machinery. Disclaimer: Please check with your doctor before embarking on any course of treatment. CHRISTMAS AT LA BOUTIQUE Beat the rush

A

s this is our first real Christmas here at ´La Boutique´ we have spent the past few months excitedly thinking of ways to make the perfect Christmas for everybody…….Whether it's that tricky teenage boy, the lady who has everything, boys & girls of all ages or even the family pet, we have sourced from all over Europe, gifts of all shapes & sizes (as well as budgets!). Brand new stock for Christmas is already arriving & we have to admit that it has gone straight onto our Christmas lists ready to send to St. Nicolas! To name all of the exciting treats we have lined up would be near on impossible & spoil the fun of visiting us often, but to give you a sneak preview, here is our list of top gift ideas for the holiday season: Jodie loves the latest luscious addition to the first floor….Cupcake bath bombs, massage bars & slices of soap in the form of cake. For the perfect last minute girly gift, she recommends the ready made gift boxes containing a selection of the treats above & wrapped up in gorgeous paper & a big bow. Inma´s choice for best gift idea would be a tea & coffee hamper, from our Kitchen Floor. Now that we sell loose teas shipped in from the famous German tea company D & B, you can now buy ready wrapped hampers or choose your own products to make a personalised gift full of things you know will be loved. As well as

54 The Grapevine

Premium Earl Grey, Green Tea & Jasmine and traditional English Breakfast tea, we also stock a lovely variety of decaffeinated fruit infusions for those who wish to drink tea all day long! Lidia´s choice is simple – when in doubt, give lingerie! For an extra special treat for the lady in your life (or perhaps just for yourself!), we stock a huge range of lingerie sets & pyjamas, as well as bras in English cup sizes! And not forgetting, underwear for men and children too! And as for me………it is a near impossible choice to make as there are so many things I am proud to offer at La Boutique. So I will just mention a few key points you might not want to miss this Christmas. Our Toy Catalogue is out now, offering all of the latest toys on the market, with prices to compete with the coast & the convenience of buying locally! For both big & little girls you will find everything from Monster High Dolls to old fashioned Prams and Princess Dressing up Tables…and for boys of all ages, we have in stock a huge variety of toys from Scalextrics to Playmobil. Check out our toy catalogue for gift ideas for babies through to teenagers….and if there is anything that we don't have in stock just ask! We can order everything, however we advise to do so early in order to give the Elves time to get working & avoid disappointment. For me, the 25th of December would not be the same without a properly dressed Christmas Table.

On our kitchen floor we have everything you might need to resemble Delia Smith, including Turkey roasting tins, gravy boats, Pudding tins & serving platters. To set off the magical tone we also have a whole range of tablecloths, napkins, serviettes, plates, glasses & cutlery to make sure your table looks as good as the food! And for the final touch we have Christmas crackers to match almost every colour scheme, as well as candles, wreaths & festive centre pieces. For the adventurous baker, we have in stock fabulous gift ideas, as well as gluten free fondant, flavourings, colourings and edible decorations! On the first floor you will be spoilt for choice for gifts ideas for others, or yourself, as well as finding many ideas to spruce up your house in time for any Christmas guests! We already have in stock a range of Christmas cards, including local handmade creations, and small light gifts perfect for posting to loved ones far away. In our baby section we have inexpensive Travel Cots, High Chairs & Car Seats to ensure that any little visitors remain safe, whilst not breaking the bank. And to stay toasty and warm this winter, we also supply Winter Bedding, Heated Blankets, Duvets, Pillows and cushions. So, as you can see, there are many reasons to come and visit us at La Boutique in Competa. We will be delighted to show you round and hopefully help you plan your own perfect Christmas………..and best of all we gift wrap for free! Please join us for a festive drink on the 21st December to celebrate our first year of business! PS. advertising special nights or events. Another new product line we have brought along is SATZUMA, a range of quirky, fun products that you never knew you needed, they make excellent unusual gifts for members of the family or friends, ideal at Christmas, some are computer related, some are practical but fun, some have loads of bling such as diamante pink & purple mice for your computer, roll up rubber keyboards, webcam, fan & light combinations, desk fans & lights powered from your USB sockets, gift boxed touch screen pen & diamante mouse sets plus others.

We are stocking a range of diaries, some of which are Spanish and some English, the difference of course are the pages that display the holidays (much more in the Spanish one). We are trying to locate more of the printers which we offered earlier in the year, they proved very popular, refurbished and tested, including the free extra set of compatible inks they were good value for money so watch this space. Printer purchase needs to be done carefully, there are some ways to bring the running cost down considerably saving you money. Please come & see us at the markets in Trapiche, Puente Don Manuel & Coin to see our range of products or discuss all your printing needs, free advice on buying printers and printing even if you don't buy from us, give us a call or e-mail your enquiries (See advert below)

of companies that apparently don't mind running the risk that their emails will be scanned. So whether you use Gmail itself, write to someone who uses Gmail, or, in many cases, simply email.

GOOGLE MONITORING How GOOGLE has Gotcha!

G

oogle can and does monitor people – perhaps upwards of 90 percent of Internet users worldwide – whether they use a Google product or not, and most people have no idea they're being monitored. Just how extensive are Google's tracking activities? The search engine. Every search you conduct using Google's ubiquitous search engine – for medical or mental health information, an update on your favourite mayoral candidate, how to handle kids' tantrums, the cure for halitosis – allows the company to track your interests and, over time, build a detailed dossier that describes virtually every aspect of your character, food preferences, religious beliefs, medical problems, sexual inclinations, parenting challenges, political leanings and so on. In other words, when you use Google's search engine, Google's gotcha. Even if the company doesn't know your name, it can still track your searches by reading codes, such as your IP address, that are unique to your computer or current location. Through cross-referencing, the company can eventually find your name, address, and telephone number,

62 The Grapevine

too. When you use the search engine or most any other Google product, Google also installs an identifier cookie on your computer that makes you easier to track. And get this: Google reads and stores every letter you type into its search bar as you are typing (think: m-a-r-i-j-u-a), so even if your good judgment suddenly kicks in and you don't hit "enter," the company still records what it thinks you were looking for. Google uses your search history to send you personalized ads. That's how it survives, after all. About 97 percent of the company's revenues are from advertising. Email. When you use Gmail, Google's email service, the company scans the content of your emails and the email addresses of your correspondents. Google's Gmail system also scans your incoming emails, even the ones coming from Yahoo and Hotmail. If you feel safe because you've deleted emails you regretted sending, think again. Google never erases its own copies, even copies of the drafts you decided not to send – even copies of incomplete messages you didn't save as drafts. And then there are those Google servers, which route the emails of thousands

Chrome. This is Google's browser, introduced in 2008 to compete with Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox and other browsers. Why did Google bother to introduce yet another free browser into a somewhat crowded market? Because with Chrome, Google can track every website you visit directly – that is, without first passing through its search engine. The search engine on its own left a significant gap in the company's knowledge about you; it only revealed areas in which you needed more information. Chrome allows Google to track your activities in areas of your life that are so well established that you don't need to research them – the regular contact you have with your bank or employer, for example. Gotcha. Firefox. What? How can Google track you when you're using a competing browser maintained by a non-profit organization? It can do so because before Firefox takes you to your destination, it first checks to see whether that website is on Google's blacklist, an everchanging list of about 600,000 websites that Google's bots have identified – sometimes mistakenly – as dangerous. No government agency or industry association ever gave Google the authority to maintain such a list, but it exists, and Firefox uses it. Thus, Google is alerted when you visit websites through Firefox. Even more disturbing is the fact that Mozilla, the organization that maintains

Firefox, receives 85 percent of its $163 million in annual income from… that's right, Google. In return, Firefox makes Google its default search engine. Safari. In 2012, Google was fined $22.5 million by the Federal Trade Commission for illegally tracking users of Apple's iPhone, iPad and Macintosh computers by essentially hacking Apple's Safari browser. The big fine solved the problem, right? Not at all, because Safari, like Firefox and other browsers, uses Google's blacklist to check the safety of websites. Android. And why did Google develop its own mobile operating system, in this instance competing primarily with operating systems developed by Research in Motion (for Palm devices) and Apple (for the iPhone)? Because operating systems are even more deeply embedded into computing devices than browsers. Everything you type, touch, and swipe runs through the operating system, which gives Google full access to your digital activities. When you're online, Android can upload whatever Google tells it to, and when you're offline (which, these days, is hardly ever for mobile devices), Android can store whatever Google tells it to store for later uploading. YouTube. Google, Inc. bought YouTube in 2006 for $1.65 billion, almost certainly because YouTube unveiled yet another set of insights into consumer preferences. When you spend hours on YouTube skipping from right-wing manifestos to horror movie

trailers to Lady Ga Ga videos, Google's gotcha. Google Analytics. More than half the world's most popular websites use Google Analytics to collect data about who is visiting their pages. Visitors have no idea that Google Analytics is even present, but Google is tracking every one of them. Google's gotcha. Google AdSense. In an attempt to monetize their web pages, millions of website owners now sprinkle small ads provided by Google throughout their legitimate content. The ads are, in theory (but often not in practice), related to whatever news story, food recipe or celebrity bio you're reading, making it somewhat likely that you will eventually click on one of them. Okay, I know what you're thinking: When you click on one of those ads, Google's gotcha, right? Not so. Google's gotcha the moment you load a page containing an AdSense ad. When you click on an ad, the company just gets more detailed info. Google AdWords. As if those little ads weren't enough, Google also now allows website owners to embed targeted Google ads into words scattered throughout their textual content. When you load a page that contains any of those words, Google's gotcha, and when you click on any of those words, Google's got more. Widgets. They're everywhere and multiplying like tribbles: tiny icons that allow you to notify your friends on Facebook or your colleagues on LinkedIn that the web page you're on is worth visiting. When you click

on the G+ widget… that's right . Google Street View. Google vehicles have now travelled millions of miles in 48 countries to take pictures of homes and businesses – visual information that's easy to cross-reference with the dossiers of home and business owners. The real treasure trove for Google was not in the photos but in the information its Street View teams were skimming from unencrypted Wi-Fi networks: passwords, emails, browsing histories, financial information and more. After the Federal Communications Commission discovered in 2010 that Google had been collecting information this way for at least three years in more than 30 countries, it secured a promise from company officials to discontinue the practice and fined Google $25,000 (yes, that's all) for impeding its investigation. More recently, the attorneys general of 38 states settled a lawsuit against Google for its Street View snooping for $7 million. Google Maps. They're embedded on about a million websites. And when Google is present on a web page, it can track people who visit that page. Google Glass. Due out in time for Christmas 2013, this is a mobile computer mounted on the frames of eyeglasses which will follow your verbal commands and help you make sense of what you see by, say, displaying reviews of a restaurant that's within your field of vision. In other words, Glass will give Google access to what you say, what others around you are saying, and what you see.
