Editors Note...

Although I said last month I felt summer had come to an end with the return of the kids to school. I think this year that is not quite true. Temperatures in September remained in the late 20’s and eating al fresco of an evening was still possible. I still haven’t got my jeans out the cupboard, so long may it continue! My parents and Auntie visited last month too and couldn’t believe the glorious weather they had. They also spent my birthday with me for the first time in maybe 20 years!!

showed that 52 per cent of Catalans would vote to breakaway from Madrid and form a separate Catalan state. A deep recession and cuts in public spending in Catalonia, a wealthy industrial region that accounts for a fifth of Spain's economic output, have stirred discontent with the central government in Madrid. The human chain stretched from the French border in the Pyrenees to the border with the neighbouring region of Valencia in the south. Some 400,000 had registered to take part in advance of the event but organisers claim 1.6 million eventually joined the human chain in Catalonia.

British man has died following an accident while on holiday in the Spanish city of Barcelona. The man is understood to be 24year-old pub manager Joe Smith, from Leicester, who was in Barcelona at the time of the incident.It was reported he was injured in an accident involving a lift. Friends took to social media to launch a fundraising appeal following his death. Paul Talbot, described on Twitter as a tattoo artist, posted a message that said: "Im trying to help raise money for joe smith , who was tragically killed in Barcelona while on holiday , and without any travel insurance. Its going to cost 4000 just to get him home."

The Foreign Office confirmed it had been made aware of the incident.

Spanish member of parliament was expelled from the chamber for speaking English amid a simmering dispute over Catalan independence. During a debate on an anti-corruption bil, Alfred Bosch criticised a decree to introduce education in Spanish

and English as well as Catalan in the Balearic Islands, which drew a warning from speaker Cecilia Villalobos for straying from the topic. Mr Bosch then switched from Spanish to English to reply: "The Kingdom of Spain has some trouble with freedom.

Freedom of speech is corrupted, freedom of thought is corrupted."That was too much for the speaker, who complemented Mr Bosch on his English but ordered him to leave the chamber."Madame Speaker, why children and not MPs?" Mr Bosch said – in Spanish again – as he walked out.

panish universities are looking for private donors in an "adopt a student" scheme aimed at bridging a shortfall in public funds amid rising tuition fees. Universities are considering a move to set up charitable funds so that private individuals can sponsor the studies of those from low income families. "In the same way that one might sponsor-a-child (in the Third World) individuals could sponsor a student in Spain by contributing to their tuition fees," explained Adelaida de la Calle, the dean of Malaga University and chair of Association of Spanish University Deans. The emergency measure is being considered after figures showed that some 30,000 students are on the verge of abandoning their studies at the start of the academic year because they can't meet tuition or living costs.

Access to state sponsorships have been restricted leaving students from low-income families struggling to fund further education at a time when youth unemployment in Spain has soared to a record 56 per cent.

HISPANIC DAY October 12th

ctober 12th is celebrated as the National Day or Fiesta Nacional de Espana in Spain. It is also called the Hispanic Day or the Dia de la Hispanidad.

The day is celebrated to commemorate the arrival of Columbus in Americas in 1906.

It is also celebrated as the day of the Armed Forces in Spain.

It was on August 3, 1492 that Columbus first set foot from the port of Palod de la Frontera in Spain. He ended up on an island that’s part of the Caribbean now.

Up until 1987, the day was celebrated as the Hispanic Day in Spain to celebrate the country’s association with Hispanidad.

Hispanidad is a common community formed by countries of Hispanic origin. In 1987, through an official order, the day was renamed as the National Day of Spain. Prior to that, the National Day of Spain used to be celebrated on different dates over the years. The Hispanic Day was renamed as the National Day as a compromise between the Republicans and Conservatives.

The Conservatives wanted to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the country while the Republicans wanted to showcase the strengthening democracy of the country.

Other than that, there is not much celebration on the streets. It is a public holiday. Therefore, most of the shops and all the offices are closed on this day. The day is also celebrated in other countries by different names to commemorate the arrival of Columbus in Americas.

In Bahamas, it is celebrated as the Discovery Day; in Costa Rica, it is the Day of the Cultures; in Argentine, it is the Day of the Races; while in Chile and Mexico, October 12 is celebrated as the Day of Indigenous Resistance.

The day sees muted celebrations in the country. It is marked with raising of Spain’s National Flag in Madrid by the king of Spain. The

English, Maths, Client Care, Health and Safety and Reception are all key aspects in running a beauty business were at the core or her entry level studies. The second year focused more on beauty where she learnt all aspects of makeup, eye treatments, facials, waxing etc.

The college also had an open Salon where they could practice constantly on “real” clients. This ensured confidence and accuracy was achieved by all students.

Finally, in her third year Kelly studied nails and as a result she is qualified in all aspect of nails for example gel, acrylic, nail art or simply manicures or pedicures.

Also entered a nail competition and came third. Having met up with Kelly a few times now her nails are beautiful, with incredible detail and precision and they are a fabulous advert for her business. Also, within the third year she undertook a spray tanning course. This is also a service she will provide to her customers throughout the winter period.

BEAUTY AND NAILS An interview with Kelly Maynard

ou may remember Kelly Maynard from appearing in the CAMPO pantomime “Cinderella” where she gave a great performance as the Fairy godmother or you may know her as Kevin's daughter from Portichuelo Ferriteria in Competa. However, now she hopes you will remember her by her new business “Beauty and Nails” by Kelly. She has come a long way since her debut performance in Competa both in maturity and ambition.

Kelly and her family moved to Spain 8 years ago where she enrolled in the secondary school in Competa. She acknowledged she was never offered the help and support needed and has

always been interested in nails.

Having bought her first nail kit from Argos she taught herself, watched her mum get her nails done and then she was hooked on creating designs and pretty things for nails!! On leaving school she decided to pursue this course of training. After extensive research she found the perfect course in England that provided in depth beauty training over 3 years. However, the downside was she was unable to study nails immediately. This aspect was only in the third year of the course.

Also, as she hadn’t got any GCSE’s Kelly had to start at level one instead of going in at Level 2.

Once on the course Kelly realised starting at the bottom was actually a huge benefit to her studies.

Having successfully passed all levels of the course Kelly returned to Spain in order to start up her own business. She approached Inez at the Alberdini in Competa and asked if she could use one of her side rooms in order to provide beauty therapy services. Inez was happy to support Kelly and so a couple of months ago Kelly opened for business at the Alberdini in Competa. She provides an extensive list of beauty services and a comprehensive list of services for nails some of which haven’t been available in Competa before. Also, Kelly added, if there is a particular design you would like created on your nails bring a picture and she will try and recreate for you.

T

his month we'd like to ask for your help in re-homing and also share some good news.

We currently have three very young kittens that were found abandoned by the bins in Cómpeta. They are being cared for by the wonderful Beth Mcavoy, one of our volunteers, who, in the absence of their mother, has once again taken on the task of bottle feeding every four hours. They are almost ready for adoption.

Action for Animals can cover the costs of neutering etc if you are able to offer one of them a loving home.

We're also now desperate to find a home for Ollie, a beautiful,

young dog who is loveable, playful and gets on well with cats, as his current fosterer is due to leave Cómpeta. Can you re-home Ollie or maybe foster him for a few months? Should you choose to foster Ollie then Action for Animals will cover the costs of his food and vet's bills while he is in your care.

You may remember Sally, a young boxer cross, who was thrown over the wall into the garden of an English couple in Archez back in June. Since then many of us have been tirelessly trying to find a permanent home for her. At last, Sally has a wonderful new family and a bright future! Thanks to everyone who helped to make this

I

find the world of medical herbs fascinating. We had such a cornucopia of medicines all around us for thousands of years – Mother Nature's touch of magic to help keep us healthy and happy.

Then, because of our own stupidity, we lost many of them.

We lost the plants and we lost the knowledge of our ancestors. Many are regaining interest in these natural curers; some still look upon it as superstitious nonsense but even our 'superior' modern research cannot deny the evidence. Many common herbs are full of well-documented goodness. I use the term 'herb' here in the broadest sense – a plant that is useful and not purely decorative; this can encompass anything from lichen to giant trees.

We're putting together, at the Garden Centre, some little known herbs that are giants in keeping us healthy and curing ailments. Small pots but big power. We'll be starting off with a range of six of the best, but we will add into our herbal magic corner. Here, in a two-part feature, are the six.

Aloe vera, syn. aloe barbadensis, also known as the Healing Plant, Wand of Heaven.

Aloe verais one that many will recognise. It is believed to have originated in Africa. Like most aloes, it likes plenty of sunshine

and little water. It can be damaged by freezing temperatures, snow and ice. The fleshy leaves grow in rosettes with a yellow candelabra flower. Young plants, known as 'pups' grow around the base of the mother and can be detached and planted to increase stock.

Medically: man is known to have used aloe vera for 5000 years. The ancient Chinese and Egyptians utilised this remarkable plant for a multitude of reasons but especially in embalming mummies (for its preservative properties) and against tuberculosis and other respiratory problems. It contains over 200 active components; it is one of very few plants that contain vitamin B12, amongst many others, and some 20 minerals. It is hardly surprising that it is used for a wide range of ailments such as: stomach irritations, digestive problems, ulcers, gastritis, constipation, nausea, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, osteoarthritis; it helps blood circulation, detoxes, and reduces cholesterol. It is a great disinfectant and is antibiotic, anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, antiseptic, anti-fungal and antiviral. It reduces inflammation of painful joints. It is probably most known for its ability to soothe and heal all types of burns, rashes, bites and stings. Wounds heal quicker and scarring is reduced, skin complaints such as eczema and psoriasis are eased. Even Cleopatra used it as part of her beauty regime – it helps towards

Internally: Take 1 tablespoon of the gel daily – it can be blended with juice. Aloe veraalkalises the body. This creates an environment where disease cannot grow – even cancers.

Contradications: most ancient cultures recognise the principal of taking a 'medicine' when it is needed. Daily, every day, is not the way. Let your body tell you.

Kalanchoedaigremontiana, also known as Mother of Thousands, Alligator plant or Mexican Hat plant.

Kalanchoedaigremontianais native to Mexican. The climate there is desert-like, thus plants will grow happily in hot, arid situations. It will not survive prolonged freezing temperatures. It is a quick grower and rapidly creates young plantlets on the borders of its leaves.

Medically: k.daigremontiana is used for all types of cellular damage, and especially cancer, tumours, abscesses, inflammation, rheumatism, deep wounds and gangrene, hypertension, renal problems and psychological problems such as schizophrenia, irrational fears and panic attacks.

Externally: mash the leaves and apply to the damaged area of skin.

Juice of the leaves can also be mixed with oil to aid application.

Internally: 30g of fresh raw leaf daily, preferably in 2 x 15g takes.

The leaves can be chopped and added to salads; they have a slightly bitter taste but are not objectionable. Or blend a dessertspoon of leaf with water and drink three times a day.

Contraindications: Should not be taken when pregnant as it can stimulate the uterus. Do not take if you have any heart condition. Do not take in a continuous form over large periods of time. This leaf is better used as a treatment rather than preventative. The plant – as many others – can be toxic when taken in very large quantities or over a prolonged period. Clinical tests have shown no toxicity up to 5g daily per kilo of body weight which is at least 10 times the suggested dosage here.

Kalanchoe is not a miracle performer on its own. To cure cancer you need to change habits of a lifetime. Exclude toxics from your diet, your home, your lifestyle.

It's us that can create the miracle.

It is an antioxidant, a diuretic and has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Chewing on fresh stevia leaves is said to avoid teeth cavities.

Fresh: 4 leaves taken before or during breakfast and again at dinner time.

Dry: 2g of dried leaves soaked in boiling water for 10 mins. twice a day, once in the morning and one in the late evening.

Contraindications: If you have diabetes, monitor your glycaemic levels to correctly balance your intake of stevia and medication.

Medication levels are usually greatly reduced thanks to stevia.

So what's the solution?

We need to cleverly manage and monitor our energy use, as well as consider alternative ways in which to heat and cool and light our homes. *The introduction of a solar hotwater system can reduce electric bills by over 50% when displacing an electric water heater.

SPAIN TO TAX THE SUN Spanish Government to tax homes with Photovoltaic Panels

T

he proposed Royal Decree to tax home owners who produce their own electricity is the first of its kind worldwide, and is certain to cause problems for those who previously installed systems where investment payback was calculated without the proposed new tax.

We didn't quite believe it at first, so we scoured the web hoping to find something that would tell us it was all a big mistake, but no, the web is full of leading news agencies reporting on the issue, and reference that the Governments Worldwide are keenly watching to see what happens. Although the Spanish Government are expected to face a number of objections which will need answered before the final paper is released (expected October 2013), due to their vast majority of seats in Parliament the Royal Decree is not required to come under debate from the opposition party's and is thought will be approved quickly in order to bolster the balance sheet.

So what does the new law really mean for those with Solar PV or thinking about installing it? *Those who generate their own electricity will have to pay a tax which will make self electricity generation financially uneconomical over the medium term of 10 -20 years. (UNEF estimates payback at as much as 35 years!!) *Homes with Photovoltaic Panels have to connect them to the grid within 2 months of installation.

Failure to do so will result in a fine. (Widely reported to be between €6m and €30m Euros!!).

Spain currently has some of the highest utility costs in Europe, and imports over 80% of electricity and gas. Utility costs are expected to rise above inflation as Spain can do little to control the foreign production costs, and the Government can ill afford to increase current subsides.

This is a huge blow to home owners, and business users of Photovoltaic, as well as to companies like ours who promote

*LED light bulbs can save over 90% of electric consumption when replacing traditional bulbs . *Back Boiler Log Burners can cut oil and gas use considerably when used to hot water, radiators and underfloor heating instead of the traditional boiler. *A swimming pool cover can save tens of thousands of litres of water from evaporating annually.

The government may choose to tax us on electric energy we generate ourselves, but can't possibly tax us for Energy & Water we don't use, so the answer is simple: Conserve the Water & Energy we use therefore reducing monthly bills and our keeping hard earned cash in the bank, our bank, not the Governments.

MULTICULTURAL NIGHT OF MUSIC AND DANCE Sunday October 6, La Plaza, Canillas de Albaida 6 hours of Music and Dance from around the World.

As part of its Cultural week, the Ayuntamiento of Canillas de Albaida proudly presents a Night of Multi-cultural Music and Dance to be held in the Plaza (main square), Canillas de Albaida on Sunday 6th October. Admission to the event is free but there will be opportunities to donate to local charities. The event will be hosted by Inez Leniere and Roger Sparks in Spanish and English and they will open the concert at 6.45pm, an early start but there is lot to fit in.

TAIL TORROX Tail dogs have survived another hot and humid summer and continue to thrive. Early September Bar Los Amigos in Torrox Park put on a Variety Show in aid of charity which was such a sell-out that several of Tail volunteers were unable to buy tickets although we were one of the beneficiaries. A very big thank you. Tail ran a garage sale in the Pueblo Andaluz, Torrox Costa, mid September which despite the predictions

of bad weather went ahead and proved more than worthwhile.

Tail has had a stall at the Nerja Sunday Market all July, August and September where Martine Decroie has worked hard to average over a €100 each day.

The Tail stall on the Algarrobo Saturday market (1st & 3rd sat of the month) recommenced in September and will run through the winter.

Upcoming Dog Show on November 9th at the Boat Chiringuito, Torrox Costa (Penoñcillo). This will be the third dog show this autumn, so if you have taken part in the others this is the one to see if you really are a winner. Come along and have a great time at a great venue. Follow Tail on Facebook, webpage, or telephone 629 501 173 AXARQUIA'S NEW CHOIR, CORAL BEL CANTO, GETS OFF TO A FLYING START On 5th September, after coffee, cold drinks and churros in Cafe Niza prospective members of the new choir in Velez Malaga were welcomed by Louise Soucy, one of the founders. She introduced their conductor, Manuel Sanchidrián. Manolo was already known to some of those present and they were

delighted to learn of his appointment. Some singers who intended to join had not yet returned from their Summer holidays in various parts of Europe but there was nevertheless a good showing of twenty four men and women from 7 different countries. The venue had been a closely guarded secret. The group were escorted up the hill to the Convent of Las Claras and were shown into the convent church. There were gasps of amazement when many of those present saw the interior of the 16th century church for the first time. Could this really be where rehearsals would be held? Before anything else a few minutes were spent while the beauty of this incredible building with its high ceiling and dome promising fantastic acoustics were admired by everyone..

Finally Manolo called the choir to order and did some initial exercises, both physical and vocal before starting the business of rehearsal, which was to learn how to sing a four part piece in the way he wanted. The music was new to everyone there but Manolo proved to be an excellent teacher and made the learning fun. .As befitted the building, the piece was composed around 300 years ago by Antonio Lotti. "Regina Coeli" became the first work in the repertoire of "Coro Bel Canto".

Local News Two other pieces were rehearsed and there was even a mini performance of Handel's Canticorum Jubilo on the chancel steps. Two hours passed very quickly and it was a happy group who made their way back down the hill.

At the second rehearsal the following week some more new members were welcomed by, what already felt like, a group of established friends and the membership had grown to 29.

Bel Canto will be meeting at Las Claras every Thursday at 11am. New members will always be made welcome and anyone who wishes to know more can come along to a rehearsal to see for themselves how a group of singers can get pleasure in creating a great sound together.
