Last month the International news highlighted that property prices are bottoming out along with the stabilising of the Spanish economy. It now appears to be a great time to buy a property in Spain, before the predicted increase in prices next year. Our quarterly property feature will give you some great ideas of what is available in the area and some buying and selling advice too. See pages 52 to 63. This month the village of Canillas de Albaida hosts its cultural week from 1st to 7th of October. A couple of events are worthy of a special mention during this week and that is the artists from the 5+ Art Group are show casing their work in various locations around the village. See page 83 for more details. Also, on Sunday 5th of October the week finishes with a bang in the central Plaza with the Night of Multicultural Music and Dance. Entrance is free and starts at 7.30pm. On a personal note thanks to my family who looked after the kids while we spent a weekend in tarifa. The area of Cadiz is our favourite coastline and we love the white sandy beaches and watching the kite and wind surfing. The winds can get fierce but we were lucky as there was only mild wind during our stay and the temperatures were still high for September. The town of Tarifa isn’t the prettiest; the places to stay are not the poshest. However, Tarifa has something about it, its buzzing day and night and is great for people watching, drinking a mojito on the beach and eating some really good tapas. Enjoy and keep reading The Editor

luxurious central Madrid square was named after Margaret Thatcher last month, in a gesture that will see the late prime minister remembered alongside sculptures by Pablo Picasso and a statue to Christopher Columbus. Sir Mark Thatcher attended the inauguration ceremony in the Spanish capital, which marked the first city square outside the UK to honour his mother. "I know that her history, her honour, will be adequately well defended by the people of Spain, the people of Madrid and in particular, in this wonderful location, which will live for many, many years in the future," Sir Mark said. Madrid's mayor, Ana Botella, unveiled a sign bearing the inscription 'Plaza Margaret Thatcher' and acclaimed her as one of "the past century's most extraordinary figures", recalling how she survived an IRA bombing in Brighton in 1984.

p to 1.8 million Catalans filled the streets of Barcelona Last month demanding the chance to hold a Scottish-style referendum on independence. A week before Scotland went to the polls on whether to break away from the United Kingdom, separatists in Spain’s northeastern region of Catalonia called for their own referendum as they celebrated their national day. An official from Barcelona's nationalist-led city hall told reporters it estimated turnout for the demonstration at 1.8 million, but central government officials put the figure much lower. The Spanish government delegation in Catalonia ? calculated the figure at between 470,000 and 520,000, it said in a statement.Crowds dressed in the red and yellow national colours of Catalonia filled the streets of the region’s capital to form a giant "V" stretching seven miles - the "V" sign stands for via (way), voluntat (will), votar (vote) and victoria (victory).

he Caminito del Rey, one of the world scariest hikes, is reopening to the public early next year. It is currently illegal to walk along the dangerously dilapidated path, which skirts the Guadalhorce river gorge near El Chorro in southern Spain – although that hasn’t stopped daredevil climbers.09 years ago the trail was completed by workers at nearby hydroelectric plants. 5 people died in the gorge in 1999 and 2000, resulting in the walkway’s closure. €6,000 is the maximum fine for trespassers. 4 kilometres of the path are being restored, including the infamous cliff side section through the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, which has huge drops to the river below. €2.2m was the original budget for restoration, agreed in 2011 by the Málaga city council and Andalucía’s regional government – though costs are now estimated to be more than €5m. 500 tonnes of new metal parts will replace those that have fallen in the ravine or rusted away; concrete paths will be replaced with wooden panels; handrails will be added; and there are plans for a skywalk section. 70% of the restoration work has been completed, with the hike due to reopen in January or February next year. €0 is the cost of walking the trail for the first three months after it reopens, after which there will be a charge and visitor numbers will be limited.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS NEWS UPDATE Goodbye Beth

T

his month we're very sad to be saying goodbye to one of our highly valued and hugely loved volunteers, Beth Mcavoy, as she leaves Spain to return to the UK. Beth has been a member of our team from the beginning and over the years we've lost count of how many new born abandoned kittens and puppies she's handreared to become healthy young adults, ready for their new homes. She has worked tirelessly and selflessly to lovingly nurture each and every one of them, spending countless sleepless nights carrying out bottle feeds every 3 to 4 hours, dedicating herself to the task at hand. And she's still managed to turn up for work at the charity shop the next day, kittens and puppies in tow so they don't have to miss one of their vital feeds.

Her artistic and organisational skills are truly outstanding and have been invaluable to us each year at our annual Scruffs Dog Show. Who else could make a fortune-teller's tent from a beach parasol and a pile of old curtains? Or a brilliant banner from a plastic tablecloth and a pot of paint? In addition to all this, Beth has worked as a volunteer in our charity shop since it first opened and has been instrumental in making it the success it is today. As a tribute to Beth and her magnificent work, we'd like to show just a few of the little lives she's saved over the years. We hope you enjoy the photos as much as we've enjoyed working with Beth and we'd like to wish her all the happiness she deserves in her new life back in

the UK. Thank you Beth, from everyone at Action for Animals, for being such a fantastic part of our team and from all the animals who owe you their lives. We're all going to miss you enormously. Hispanic Day in Spain October 12th

H

ispanic Day (DĂa de la Hispanidad) or National Day (Fiesta Nacional de EspaĂąa) is an annual national public holiday in Spain on October 12. It commemorates when Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas in 1492. What do people do? The king of Spain supervises the raising of the Spanish national flag in the center of Madrid on Hispanic Day. He and the prime minister lead a military parade after that. The parade includes representatives from most of Spain's military units and various military vehicles. Armed forces' planes perform aerobatics above the parade route and display yellow and red smoke to represent the Spanish flag. Radio, television and Internet news services broadcast live on

these events. Hispanic Day is a day off work and an opportunity to spend time quietly at home or in the company of family members and close friends. People in the Aragon region in the north-east of Spain also commemorate Our Lady of the Pillar, their patron saint, on October 12.

calendar, Christopher Columbus set sail from the port of Palos de la Frontera in South-West Spain on August 3, 1492. He landed on a island that is now part of the Bahamas in the Caribbean on October 12, 1492.The anniversary of this date is marked as Hispanic Day in Spain.

Public life Hispanic Day is a national public holiday in Spain on October 12. Public life is generally quiet and many businesses and other organizations are closed. Many stores are closed but some bakers and food stores may be open. Public transport services generally run to a reduced schedule, although there may be no services in rural areas.

Events similar to Hispanic Day to mark the anniversary of the date Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas are also held in other countries. October 12 is known as Discovery Day in the Bahamas, Day of the Cultures in Costa Rica, Day of the Race in Argentina, Chile and Mexico and the Day of Indigenous Resistance in Venezuela. The second Monday of October is Columbus Day in the United States.

oy manufacturer Mattel has launched an investigation over claims that one of its Barbie dolls, instead of talking about glitter, pink dresses and parties, blurts out a four letter word. Talina Evans gave her daughter the longed-for Barbie doll as a special treat. But the young mother was shocked when her seven-year-old child's new toy apparently swore, exclaiming . “What the f***?” as her daughter Demileigh played with it. Ms Evans, 25, claims that she could hear the doll - which is based on Barbie’s web reality series, Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse – utter the obscenity. The doll is programmed to say 15 different phrases, including“Amaze”, “I love a makeover”, “There is no substitute for glitter”, and “To the salon!”. But Ms Evans, who is pregnant with her second child, said she was left mortified when she claims to have heard the doll swear. She attempted to return the Mattel toy to the Home Bargains store where she bought it - but was told there was nothing they could do because she had lost the receipt. It is believed the doll is actually programmed to say “Off the

commuter has proved that travelling on foot can be just as fast as taking the Tube – and staged a race against a London Underground train to prove his point. James Heptonstall filmed his 380m sprint from London’s Mansion House to Cannon Street station while his friend Noel Carroll took the Circle Line Tube for the same journey. He made it back on to the train with seconds to spare and was applauded by his fellow passengers. The pair created a video of the stunt, which included climbing 75 steps and passing through two ticket barriers, using GoPro cameras and uploaded it to YouTube last month. Mr Heptonstall, 30, an environmental consultant who lives in Hampstead, said they had been inspired by similar challenges in other European cities. He said: "It was just a test project. We had seen some people had done endurance challenges on European transport networks and put them online but we had not seen anything done in London. I usually get the Northern line to work in the morning - it is not an enjoyable experience so I sometimes run or cycle if I can. "Describing the stunt, which he completed in just 80 seconds, he told the Evening Standard: "I got some quite strange looks from people in the carriage because I was in my sportswear and a camera attached to my head."While I was running someone asked Noel what I was doing - they said they did not think I would make it. [The other passengers] were all waiting on tenterhooks. But then I dived on the Tube and they were applauding.”

dog had to be rushed to the vets for emergency surgery after eating too many pairs of its owner’s knickers. Kaye Banks 47, became worried when her pet Brian, a four-year-old Samoyed, was unable to digest its food. She took the animal to Abbey Vets in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, where staff were stunned to discover its owner’s silk thongs were clogging up the animal’s stomach. They carried out an emergency two-hour operation to save Brian’s life — and after four days, the dog was deemed well enough to return home. But within hours of being back at home in Rotherham, the dog raided the washing basket again, swallowing another set of underwear.“We just couldn’t believe that after an operation and four days at the vets he comes home and does it again.

worked perfectly. Linda, is a lawyer in the UK and when it came to negotiating a deal with the buyer, this came easily to her. Andrew and Linda still used a Spanish lawyer to represent them, but the whole sales process, from beginning to end (just 4 months) has been easy and enjoyable for the couple. Of course, we are thrilled for them. Now we have to find a buyer for the next property they wish to sell – no pressure then!

SELLING A PROPERTY PRIVATELY VIA THE INTERNET IS THE FUTURE…BUT IS IT FOR YOU?

S

elling a property can be a stressful experience and as the method of selling property moves away from traditional estate agency and towards using the internet, some may say this sounds even more daunting. But in reality, is it actually that scary? We have been monitoring this scenario carefully - observing how our private sellers handle selling via this modern method and our findings are not necessarily surprising but very interesting… What we have found is that those sellers who often succeed to sell in record time and with ease are the ones who communicate well, who are proactive in their approach and who show urgency to reach the buyers before others do! A good example of using this technique successfully are, Andrew and Linda, a professional British couple who sold one of their village properties in Montejaque, Malaga through us during August. They have a number of holiday rental

24 The Grapevine

properties in Spain and want to sell them over the coming years – one or two at a time. They came to us in April via a recommendation (another British seller who had already sold via us in Montejaque). Andrew and Linda had a rather jaundiced view of “property professionals in Spain” to say the least! This set us a challenge from the start, to prove that not everyone involved with property in Spain was the same. What Andrew and Linda loved about selling privately through us, was the control they gained. Yes, we produced their property details for them but they could use their own photographs and have input into what was written. They then had complete control over the buyers who enquired when we passed them over. This really suited Andrew and Linda who were used to selling their properties to holiday makers, so the process was not dissimilar. They moved quickly to make contact with the buyers who enquired and pushed for viewings at every opportunity. They used their housekeeper to open up for viewings and it

So, if you are a seller who: w Enjoys communicating with others via email or phone. w Who would be proactive in their approach to getting a buyer's attention. w Who believes they are the best person to sell their property to a buyer. w Who is happy to ask a neighbour or friend to do the viewings for them if away from the property. w Who would relish the opportunity to seal a deal with a buyer. w Who is happy to communicate with us and ask for help if you need it. w Who is comfortable with asking us how they can generate more enquiries and viewings for their property – there is always a solution! Why aren't you selling your property privately already? You would be great at it and would save yourself a lot of money in the process! When selling with the help of Creative Property Marketing you are not alone. You can contact us and ask for help at any stage and we will step in. However, a proactive approach and willingness to chase up the buyers who enquire about your property is essential – it does not matter if this is by email or phone – communication is the key to selling privately! See our advert on the opposite page for details on how to contact us.

HONEYBEE MANAGEMENT Changeovers, pet and house sitting and more....

T

he last three months have been extremely busy for the HoneyBee's at HoneyBee Management. From house/pet sitting for those escaping the hot August weather to changeovers for those who have come to enjoy it! HoneyBee Management is a family run business, started by Ali. Following people asking for someone to trust to look after their animals whilst they go away, to those asking for someone reliable to clean their property at a competitive price, Ali decided to start HoneyBee Management. “There seemed to be a demand for property management services that didn't cost the earth…and so we decided to fill that demand!” Ali is by trade a freelance graphic designer who has grown up around animals, especially dogs, and so housesitting was no

34 The Grapevine

problem, as long as the house owners have internet so that she can continue her design work whilst also looking after peoples properties. It then evolved into helping with changeovers and soon the whole family were involved, “my partner Dan has experience in grounds maintenance, and so it made sense for him to help with the outdoor maintenance of properties…” Services provided by HoneyBee Management also include one-off cleaning, as well as regular cleaning, property maintenance and holiday rental marketing. For all services, Ali will meet with you personally to find out your needs, whether it is house sitting or running your holiday rental, whilst you take a well-deserved break. Competitively priced, and local to Competa, HoneyBee Management also serves the surrounding areas and villages.

“We could not have asked for a house sitter that was a more perfect fit for us than Ali Hall and HoneyBee Management. We have a large property with extensive gardens, pets, and a pool. We needed someone who would not just watch our house and water our plants while we were away, but who would also be comfortable with being a companion to, and caring for our three cats and large dog. We were thrilled to find out that Ali had experience training dogs and so completely understood our need for our dog to be kept on his daily schedule of feeding and training…” “I want to thank HoneyBee Management for the superb job they have done for Finca Los Pinos this weekend. Not only did they look after my private property and 3 large dogs, but they managed our clients check-in, check-out and everything in between, giving us a well needed break in the middle of our busiest season…” For more of our testimonials, or to find out more about the services HoneyBee Management provide, please go to our website: www.honeybee-management.com Or contact us for a no-obligation quote or more information: info@honeybeemanagement.com

Having Erosion Problems? We have a GREEN solution We are suppliers of a unique grass called Vetiver, (Chrysopogon Zizaioides) It is used for stopping erosion and the grass has a huge vertical root system and grows to about 1 meter with roots 3-4 meters deep. The plants are 1 euro each. This grass needs no special soil, fertilizer, or care. To plant a slip (one stalk) you just make a small hole, and put the slip in. Nothing labour intensive. The plants are planted approximately 30cm apart, so the cost for 30 linear meters is 100 euro, a very cost effective way of stopping erosion. The Vetiver Grass can handle a great deal of water, or no water at all once established. The roots grow 3-4 meters deep in one year and the roots have the strength of 1.6 mil steel Take a look at the below interesting links to explain Vetiver Grass in more depth. To view these links please go to our website www.vetiverspain.com

The Propert y Feature 2014

Private housing prices rose by 0.8% in the second quarter of 2014, compared to the same period last year, marking their first positive annual increase since the first quarter of 2008 and putting an end to six years of annual declines, according to the latest House Price Index published on by the National Statistics Institute. The residential property market in Spain is set to bottom out next year and see a 2% rise in prices in 2016, according to ratings agency Standard & Poor’s. Property prices in Spain have fallen around 30% since the economic downturn hit the country’s real estate markets in 2008. S&P says that the positive outlook for the property market is down to a faster than expected recovery of the Spanish economy and a subsequent quicker fall in unemployment. According to the Spanish Central Bank the country's economy grew by 0.5% in the second quarter of 2014, the fastest rate in six years, and the latest job figures show that 192,000 people had joined the country's workforce in the 12 months to the end of June. THE AXARQUÍA – THE BEST CLIMATE IN EUROPE! Sunset Properties reports

M

any people dream of owning property abroad either for holidays or for permanent living but where to buy that property? Generally speaking, the further south you go, the better the weather so if a warm climate is a priority, then Spain has to be your best option!

To the east of Málaga, the Axarquía region is generally quieter and less populated and comprises coastal resorts such as Torre del Mar, Torrox and Nerja and inland the 'pueblos blancos' or white villages of Cómpeta, Sayalonga and Canillas de Albaida to name but a few.

The fabulous country of Spain is made up of a number of beautiful regions all with their own appeal. The autonomous region of Andalucía is the most southern in Spain and the province of Málaga is about as far south as you can get! The temperate Mediterranean climate in the province of Málaga is that of long, dry, warm summers and short mild winters.

So why choose the Axarquía? Firstly and most importantly, the Axarquía is known for having the best climate in Europe. The exceptional climate means that it is open for business all year round with the beach resorts the focus for summer tourists and the inland countryside popular with walkers during the spring and autumn months.

The west of Málaga has its own attractions including the busy tourist resorts of Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Marbella and the inland beauty of Ronda, Antequera and El Chorro.

58 The Grapevine

The Axarquía has so much to offer from the coastal resorts to the traditional inland villages with plenty of amenities for tourists and residents alike. The white villages have not lost their identity and have a lively cosmopolitan atmosphere attracting a wide variety of

nationalities mixing together with the Spanish community. No one nationality prevails either and there is a fantastic mix of different people from various northern European countries. In addition to the many local fiestas which take place throughout the year, there are also plenty of societies and clubs offering year round social, cultural and sporting activities. At Sunset Properties Spain www.sunsetproperties-spain.com we have an extensive selection of properties for sale throughout the Axarquía, both inland and coastal, so for your own piece of the best climate in Europe. Pplease contact Denise to make an appointment either by telephone on 618 295 063 or by email info@sunsetpropertiesspain.com for a friendly, reliable and professional service.

3 KEY FACTORS IN BUYING ABROAD Find people you trust and are reputable Trusted property agent There are a lot property agents – especially in Spain! It can be somewhat overwhelming, and it is often difficult to know which one to choose. Online research into an agent in your area of choice can be useful and can give you a better idea of the different agents in the area where you are looking for a property. But nothing beats a personal recommendation, or being able to identify a tried and tested professional with a successful track record. A property agent who knows and specialises in the areas of Spain where you want to buy can match your requirements more effectively and will make your

property search and the buying process in Spain far easier. Having a trusted contact in the region, who can answer any questions or address any concerns you may have, means you can make the most of your time on your viewing trips in Spain and rest assured you are in safe hands. Currency specialists It may be the last thing on your mind when caught up in the excitement of a move abroad, but transferring money through your high street bank can be a slow, expensive, process – not what you need when you are trying to move quickly to secure your

to have a home in the sun. With the stock of cheaper properties now getting smaller it will not be too long before the market returns to a more stable financial position. Prospective buyers now appear to be more realistic and realize that most of the bargain properties have been sold and the market, whilst it is still very competitively priced, is now on an upward trend. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our vendors, you have shown great patience to weather the financial storm over the last few years, we are very confident that the future will soon get a lot better as the market returns to normal. If any new vendors would like a valuation on their properties we would be delighted for you to call into one of our offices for a coffee and a chat, we would love to see you. Thanks to everyone who have helped make Taurus one of the leading agencies in this fantastic part of Spain.

DO YOU KNOW THE COSTS INVOLVED IN SELLING? Make sure you take all these things into consideration

M

ake sure you take into account the following costs when selling:

1) Plusvalia: Every seller has to pay a tax based on the incremental value of the land which the property occupies over the amount of years you have owned it. 2) Community Fees: Make sure your Community Fees are up to date – normally you will have to present a Certicado de Communidad to the buyer on signing the Escritura. This may cost 15-25€ 3) IBI & Utilities: Ensure your utility bills are up to date as these will need to be paid up to the date of sale. You will have to provide the original proof of payment at the signing. Sellers have to pay the IBI or Council tax for the whole year they are selling. 4) Mortgage Cancellation Fees: Your bank will probably have anywhere from a 0.5% to 1% cancellation charge on the balance of your outstanding mortgage. 5) Mortgage Cancellation &

62 The Grapevine

Registration Fees at the Notary: In addition to point 4), as a seller you will have to ensure your mortgage is cancelled at the Notary and Registry. This may cost anywhere from 600 Euros to 1000 Euros, and is an amount that will probably be retained by the solicitor to ensure this is done . 6) Non Resident Retention 3%: If you are non-resident in Spain, the buyer of your property will also have to retain 3% of the Escritura Sales Price to pay directly to the Spanish tax man (Hacienda) on your behalf towards your Capital Gains Tax. Fiscal residents do not have any retentions made on them, but they may have to pay tax on the sale in the following year through their tax returns. 7) Agents Commission: If you have used an Agent to sell your property, then you will also have to account for the Agent’s fees. 8) Legal fees: A good legal office should prepare prepare utilities contracts, community charge and Suma invoices, liase with the purchaser’s representatives and the Notary, prepare the Notary appointment and all related and

paperwork, accompany the seller to the Notary and translate, calculate the 3% retention, calculate and advise re Capital Gains Tax and give fiscal representation throughout the Process. Obviously you will still have your Capital Gains Tax Liability, but that will depend on your profit. For non-residents, the 3% retention tax counts towards this. Those of you who are making a loss still have to pay out the 3% retention tax, but can reclaim it back from the Spanish tax providing you have all the correct documentation and receipts to prove you have made a loss and paid all your annual taxes. Once you know what all of these costs may be, you can then work backwards to calculate what price you need to sell at in order to walk away with the amount you have in mind in your hand. This article is a guide please seek advice from your local lawyear and estate agent too.

Helpful Tip.. If you are ever cold just stand in a corner... There normally 90 degrees..

My son says he's sick of feeling like the parent in our relationship. That's the last time I ask him for money.

"I won't let you put me down by calling me fat," said my wife, "I'm bigger than that." My girlfriend just said to me, "Did you know, butterflies only live for two days?"

"I know," I said, "The word Obese springs to mind.

Don't put all my eggs in one basket? Nice try, basket industry.

I said, "Honey, I think that's a myth." She said, "No, it's definitely a butterfly.

Ryanair lost 3 million bags last year, and they've got the nerve to question us about them. We should be the ones asking THEM the questions at the airport.

I was an accountant from the age of twenty to the age of thirty before I was sacked for no apparent reason.

"Do you have our bags?"

My wife has just been sacked from her job at the council recycling centre for being incompetent. I cant believe she's gone and thrown it all away.

"Have you let them out of your sight?"

The wife has just nominated me to do the ice bucket challenge. I'm a little confused.

"Did you put them on the plane yourselves?"

Has anyone else been asked to hold a toaster at the same time?

What a waste of fourteen years.

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Tulips in Amster… er, Andalucía!

A

s the days shorten, colours turn golden and there´s a bit of a nip to the evenings we know that autumn is peeping around the corner. It´s a busy month for gardeners tidying and waking some plants up after their summer siesta and pruning and preparing others for their winter hibernation. But once

84 The Grapevine

it´s too dark to work outside anymore, one of my favourite pleasures has always been browsing through bulb catalogues whilst sipping at a cup of hot chocolate. I know you´re supposed to say that because it sounds all cosy and homely but I´d really prefer a glass of red wine with my bulbs! Whichever your tipple, it is a

delight to envisage pots full of sweet- smelling freesias and jewel-toned anemones, sweeps of daffodils under olive trees and outrageously coloured tulips rising out of a sea of ground cover. And now is the time to plant bulbs to achieve that look and prepare and create that sense of excitement and achievement when you see the first shoots poking through the

soil. Bulbs are so easy really and give a lot of flower power for little outlay, increasing and spreading each year. They´re ideal if you´re keen but clueless and want to create an artistic masterpiece because they come in such a range of shapes, forms and colours. They like sun, welldrained soil and lots of company to give of their best! Just remember that springflowering bulbs (things like crocus, daffodils and alliums) have to be planted in autumn and summer/autumn-flowerers (gladioli, dahlia and colchicums) need to be planted in springtime. Prepare the ground by clearing it of any weeds and dig and rake it over incorporating compost if the ground is poor. Most bulbs do not like to be waterlogged so, if you are gardening on clay, sit the bulb on a layer of grit or gravel to prevent rotting. As a general rule, bulbs should be planted in a hole 3 to 4 times as deep as the bulb itself. For example, if a daffodil measures 5cm from top to bottom, then plant it between 15cm and 20cm deep. It can sometimes be a little tricky, with certain types, to distinguish between top and bottom of the bulb/corm so, if really in doubt, plant it on its side and the emerging shoot will find the “up” direction! Do you like making lasagne? Well try it in your garden too by layering bulbs for continuity of flower and plump potfuls. Three layers are great and, if you have some really tall pots, you can fit up to 5 sandwiched layers. Take advantage of the fact that different bulbs need to be planted at different levels and work out some fabulous combinations. If space is tight in your garden, this is an idea you can copy there too.

By the time you are reading this, our stocks of bulbs should have arrived. We are selling them loose (instead of in expensive packs) so that you can “pick-andmix” like in a sweet shop and create your own colourful combinations. So, just to whet your appetite and tantalise a little, here are a few of what we shall have. Alliums: describing them as belonging to the onion and garlic family doesn´t do them justice! Their drumstick-like flowers are persistent and in lots of shades of blue, lilacs, pinks and purples (there are white and yellow too). Plant in a hot sunny spot for long-lasting pleasure and spreading clumps in subsequent years. Anemones: we have the wellknown jewel-hued and velvety Coronaria de Caen and, shade loving, Blanda Blue. Crocus: a permanent favourite with their cup-shaped bowls in a range of colours. We will also have the saffron crocus, crocus sativus – so grow your own saffron, that red-gold of the spice world. Freesia and Hyacinth: Both loved for their fabulous perfume. Lilies: Cool, elegant and scented – we have the Madonna lily so traditional in Spanish cortijos and the pink-flushed Regal trumpet lily Narcissus: we´ve some of the smaller, scented varieties. Scatter them in drifts under deciduous trees to take advantage of spring sunshine before leaves unfurl. The leafy canopy of summer will protect them from the baking sun. Scilla: the bluebell, lovely naturalised under trees.

cool elegance in near black, burnt orange, magenta pink – make your own stunning designs. So go natural and rustic, fill baskets and old milk churns in soft blues, yellows and white or be coolly elegant with deep glowing colours – we have it all. zone? Why not join Axarquia Hash House Harriers? Axarquia Hash House Harriers (AH3) is a social, non-competitive club. Every second Sunday at 12:00 we meet at different places throughout Axarquia – mainly in the campo or villages around Velez Malaga. Members take turns acting as ‘hares’ which involves laying a trail of flour. The rest of the hash (the ‘hounds’) follow the trail which takes about two hours and eventually leads back to the start. Hounds can walk, jog or run along the route according to their ability and inclination. To liven things up the hares include some false paths and dead ends. To liven up flagging hounds a beer/soft drinks stop is included along the way and cold drinks are also provided at the end of the hash. After the hash we usually head to a nearby restaurant for a very sociable meal. The hash is open to all ages, abilities and nationalities. All you need is a good pair of trainers, a reasonable level of fitness and a sense of humour. Bottles of cold water are provided at the start to take with you on the ‘run’ and hares are happy to look after valuables for you so there’s no risk of dropping your car keys in a ditch! We make a charge of 4 Euros per run, which includes water, beer, crisps and soft drinks. In addition to the regular hash we organise other events from time to time such as barbecues and a summer hash camp. The hash is a great way to get out, take some exercise, socialise and see different parts of the beautiful Axarquia. So why not come along, take part and find out if hashing is for you? For more information on AHH and details of the next hash please go to www.ah3.co.uk

U3A PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP SEEKS NEW HOME Following the recent closure of La Taperia La Jarta in Torre del Mar, where the U3A Photography Group had been exhibiting their photos for just over a year, they are now faced with the challenge of trying to find a new home for their exhibition work.Ideally, the Group would like to find a bar, restaurant, hotel, or other public space, where they can hang their pictures & offer them for sale. Ideally there would be a good footfall throughout the year. The Group which is part of the international University of the Third Age (U3A) organisation, exhibit a wide range of members photos, and change them over once every 6 weeks, so as to keep the exhibition looking fresh, and offer visitors or customers to the host premises something new to look at on a regular basis. The members of the group are drawn from a wide geographical area in Axarquia, and each have their own skill, expertise & photo interest, which means that the exhibits, are a general mix of photos. Commenting on their search, Group Leader, Adrian Wilkinson, said –“We are sure that there must be a number of restaurants or similar businesses who have got lots of blank walls that would be enhanced by a display of photographs for their customers to look at”

Local News Just before the closure of La Jarta, the Group had invested in a professional hanging system, which allowed photos to be hung on walls, without the need for lots of holes everywhere, and making the wall look like a 'join the dots' puzzle. Group Leader Adrian Wilkinson can be contacted on 952 516 152 or by email on adrianinspain@gmail.com.

NEW MAHJONG GROUP IS LAUNCHING As the U3A Axarquia gets back to regular meetings following its summer break, several new groups are in the process of being formed. As part of its ever increasing move into the inland region of Axarquia, a new Mahjong group is launching in Canillas de Albaida.
