September to me is where the summer ends as the kids go back to school. This year it is the 10th for Primary children and 11th for Secondary school children. However, the weather is still lovely and for many the holidays are not over yet. There is still much going on in the area such as on the 19th, 20th and 21st of September there is the Arab festival in Salares, see page 46 & 47 for more details. On the 5th October there is a Multi Cultural Night of Music and Dance in Canillas de Albaida, more information can be found on pages 52 and 53. Also at the beginning of October is the Competa walking festival which is 4 days of walking with various routes to choose from. I would like to say well done to the organisers of Competa Rocks who put on a great show in Competa last month. We have some great photos of the evening in the magazine on page 54 courtesy of John Dunsford. This month the Mayor of Competa has again issued a statement via the magazine to encourage foreigners to talk to the town hall with regards to registering to vote. This doesn't just apply to Competa; all foreign residents have a right to vote in the up and coming elections. However, you need to register by the 31st of December in order to be able to exercise this right. Enjoy and keep reading The Editor

Tobacco Smuggling: Spain / Gibraltar border

NEWS IN SPAIN News from around Spain

W

hen Ferran Adrià shut the doors of his el Bulli restaurant in 2011, he quickly reassured gastronomes that it was not closing for good, just for a revamp. El Bulli would become a cultural foundation , complete with museum and visitor centre called el Bulli 1846, all to reopen on an expanded plot in 2015. Foodies may have been reassured, but not so environmentalists, who are furious that the expanded el Bulli will eat up more space on the Cala Montjoi, one of Spain's few protected Mediterranean beaches Critics say the expansion project will increase el Bulli's footprint by more than 200% – far greater than that allowed by law. More than 71,000 people have signed an online petition urging the chef to build elsewhere. "A natural park is a protected space that belongs to all of us and is a legacy for future generations," reads the petition. The area, it adds, "does not need tourist attractions".

Venezuelan woman with 1.7kg of cocaine hidden in her breast implants has

6 The Grapevine

been arrested at Madrid airport after arriving on a flight from Colombia. "During a check of passengers from a plane from Bogotá, the gestures and behaviour of a supposed tourist raised the suspicions of narcotics agents," police said. After a baggage search revealed nothing, female officers conducted a body search of the 43-year-old woman and discovered "certain irregularities and deformations in both breasts". At that moment, the suspect started to act nervously and "confessed that she was carrying implants with cocaine inside", police said. The woman was taken to a hospital where the implants were removed and found to contain 1.7kg (3.75lb) of the drug. Although unusual, it is not the first time Spanish police have seen drug smugglers using breast implants to try to beat detection.

T

he EU is calling on Spain and Gibraltar to crack down on tobacco smuggling across the border

between the two countries, citing concerns about the involvement of organised crime. Wrapping up a one-year investigation, the European Anti-Fraud Office (Olaf) said in a statement that it had "raised a number of concerns" to UK and Spanish officials regarding its investigation into the increase of cigarette smuggling across the frontier. While the report was not made public, Olaf noted "a significant increase in the size of the Gibraltar market for cigarettes over the past four years" and that "the concerns include indications of the involvement of organised crime". The investigation was sparked by a complaint from Spanish authorities to the EU that between 2006 and 2011, Gibraltar nearly tripled the amount of tobacco it brought in. The Spanish government claims that much of this tobacco was then sold illegally in Spain. Hovering at around €26 (£20) a carton, tobacco prices in Gibraltar are much cheaper than in Spain, where the cost generally ranges from €40 to €44. According to figures from Spanish government officials, the amount of tobacco brought into Gibraltar has continued to rise in recent years, from 110m packs of cigarettes in 2012 to 117m packs in 2013. The figures, they argue, are excessive for the 30,000 or so inhabitants of Gibraltar. "Every resident of Gibraltar, including children who are nursing, would have to smoke nine packs of cigarettes each day," one government source told El País.

S

pain’s government has given oil group Repsol the all-clear to explore for oil and gas off the coast of the tourism-dependent Canary Islands, sparking an outcry from environmental groups. The industry ministry gave Repsol a three-year licence to drill in three sites some 50km (30m) off the coast of the Spanish archipelago, which lies off the northwest coast of Africa.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS NEWS UPDATE Can you offer any of these animals a new home?

T

his month's Action for Animals page is dedicated to trying to find homes for the animals pictured here, all currently in the Cómpeta area and desperate for new owners. Cheeky, a beautiful tricolour cat, used to have owners in Cómpeta, who left her behind when they returned to England. Many months later, Cheekie who is almost blind, was found thin and unkempt, wandering the streets of the village. She was taken into temporary foster care while we tried to find her a new owner. She's a very affectionate, placid cat who'll need a home where there are no other cats, as the vet has informed us that she has feline leukaemia virus. The virus is not transferable to humans or dogs, but carries a risk of infection to other cats. Sadly, her foster career can no longer keep her and we are now desperate for a home for poor Cheekie. Can you

8 The Grapevine

give her the love she deserves? The beautiful white Persian with one blue eye and one amber eye and the sweet grey tabby kitten are also both looking for new homes, due to relocation of their Spanish family. Both cats are male, the white Persian has already been neutered and Action for Animals will provide funding for neutering the tabby. Can you provide a new home for either of them? Maisy, a Labrador cross, about 5 months old, is currently being fostered by Tony and Julie Loughlan in Archez. She's very intelligent, house trained and walks well on and off her lead. She's playful, good natured and loves the company of other dogs and children. Maisy is completely vaccinated and if you choose to adopt her, Action for Animals will pay for her to be neutered when she's old enough for the

operation. Can you offer Maisy a loving, family environment? If you are able to help any of the animals you see here, please contact us. Our revamped shop and commission based selling venture is now up and running! If you have anything you'd like us to sell for you on a commission basis (goods must be valued upwards of 50€) please call in for a chat. Thank you all for your continued donations and much valued support! Action for Animals Charity Shop, Avenida de la Constitución 59, Cómpeta. WEIRD AND WONDERFUL Strange News from Around the World

P

olice in China have begun punishing drivers who dazzle other motorists by forcing them to stare at full-beam headlights for five minutes. Officers in the southern city of Shenzhen are using the unusual penalty to crack down on motorists who inappropriately flash their lights. Drivers are ordered to sit on a small plastic stool and stare at the front of a police vehicle while its headlights are turned on full beam for five minutes. Shenzhen traffic police announced the optical ordeal on their Weibo account, a Chinese version of Twitter, saying it was an "appropriate experience" that would make offenders "sense the harm" of flashing their lights. "From now on, traffic police will make those found carelessly using bright lights to look at them for five minutes," they warned. Offenders are also lectured about properly using their headlights and fined 300 yuan (£30). The punishment has sparked ridicule

and anger on Chinese social media.

A

n Apple employee named after the company's arch enemy is selling his business card on eBay Sam Sung, from Vancouver, Canada, worked at the city's Apple store and has put his staff lanyard and business card up for grabs. They come complete with his distinctive blue employee sweater – and all three are framed behind glass. The money raised will go to a charity called Children's Wish. On the eBay listing, Mr Sung wrote: "I came across one of my old business cards the other day when it fell out of a book. A close-up view of the card Pic: Sam Sung/Ebay "So, with a view to raising money for a very deserving charity, I'm auctioning the only Apple Sam Sung business card I have left and I'm going to donate all of the proceeds minus eBay fees to Children's Wish.

man who pretended to be a ghost while behaving in a "rowdy" way in a cemetery has been fined. Anthony Stallard of Southsea, Hampshire, has been ordered to pay £35 after throwing his arms in the air and shouting: "Woooooo." Portsmouth Magistrates' Court heard that Stallard had been out drinking with friends when they went to Portsmouth's Kingston Cemetery where they played football. Hampshire police said a number of witnesses made a complaint that Stallard had acted rowdily and pretended to be a spooky apparition. A spokesman said: "The witnesses reported the group engaging in rowdy behaviour and one of them throwing their arms in the air and saying 'woooooo'." The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause distress. Stallard was also ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge and £20 in costs

T

he first UK International Open for the new sport of footgolf is hoping to showcase the game. It starts in Manchester, with competitors from across Europe hoping to win the title. The sport is a combination of two of the biggest participation sports in the world, so it is perhaps not surprising that its popularity is really kicking off. The UK is following in the footsteps of the US, where there are more than 200 courses, as well as countries including the Netherlands, Hungary and Italy. At a coaching session for young boys and girls at the UK Footgolf Academy at Doncaster College, ex-Premier League footballer Bryan Hughes teaches the basics "In the UK at the moment we've got more than 40 courses," he said. "By the end of the year we'll have 60 to 70, and by the end of next year there'll be 200. So it's showing really rapid growth." There has already been a footgolf world championship, won by Hungary in 2012.

VETIVER GRASS Local Suppliers in Sayalonga

T

here are twelve known varieties of vetiver grass, the most important is Vetiveria zizanioides. For centuries the oil extract from the roots of V.zizanioides has been used in the perfume trade. Indigenous peoples have recognized vetiver for its medicinal uses, for thatching, mulch, and feed, and for soil and moisture conservation. In more modern times the sugar industry has used vetiver grass quite widely as contour conservation hedges and for the stabilization of road sides and embankments. Vetiver once thought to be confined to wetlands thrives over a range of ecological conditions. It grows both on highly acidic (< pH3) and alkaline soils (pH11). Its roots will grow to depths of 3 - 4 meters. It is not effected seriously by pests or diseases. Many cultivars are non flowering, these when combined with a non spreading root system prevents "escape". Each clump of vetiver is extremely dense, so dense that if configured

22 The Grapevine

correctly will act as a near perfect filter. The grass is easy and cheap to establish, and needs minimum maintenance. The average root strength is estimated at 75 Mpa. Roots of vetiver will increase soil shear strength by 35% at a depth of 0.6 meters When planted as a contour hedge it acts as a continuous filtering system, that slows down rainfall runoff, reduces rilling and gullying, and collects soil sediments at the hedge face. Soil and nutrient loss is reduced, soil moisture and ground water improves significantly, and natural terraces and ground leveling develops behind the hedge. An important feature is that vetiver grass takes up minimal space and is virtually non competitive with adjacent crops. Apart for soil conservation uses vetiver is seen to be an important grass for the stabilization of road embankments, canals, bridge abutments, landslide prevention etc. In other words it is a

biological alternative to structural reinforcing techniques. Due to its extensive and deep root system, vetiver is very tolerant of drought. It can stand extreme heat (50째C) and frost (-10째C) and can be established in areas with an annual rainfall from 450 mm and higher. Vetiver will survive very hot fires and will recover quickly to continue being an effective erosion barrier and slope stabilizer. Vetiver Grass is now used for the prevention of soil erosion and slope management all over the world. It is easily obtainable now from Vetiver spain distributers, see advert opposite. it is easy to plant and maintain. Now is definitely the time to buy some and plant it, in preparation for the wetter months. More information can be found on www.vetiverspain.com or by contacting David or Anna whose details can be found on the advert opposite.

Having Erosion Problems? We have a GREEN solution We are suppliers of a unique grass called Vetiver, (Chrysopogon Zizaioides) It is used for stopping erosion and the grass has a huge vertical root system and grows to about 1 meter with roots 3-4 meters deep. The plants are 1 euro each. This grass needs no special soil, fertilizer, or care. To plant a slip (one stalk) you just make a small hole, and put the slip in. Nothing labour intensive. The plants are planted approximately 30cm apart, so the cost for 30 linear meters is 100 euro, a very cost effective way of stopping erosion. The Vetiver Grass can handle a great deal of water, or no water at all once established. The roots grow 3-4 meters deep in one year and the roots have the strength of 1.6 mil steel Take a look at the below interesting links to explain Vetiver Grass in more depth. To view these links please go to our website www.vetiverspain.com Understanding the Vetiver Grass System Vetiver.com Wikipedia.org Vetiver Conference in Columbia 2013 in Spanish and English. Los Caballos del Mosquin, with Eva Maria and the good people around her, has given me one of my life´s greatest experiences. I´m 74 years old and have been walking on the Camino as a Santiago Pilgrim for several years. My stay was booked as "Working Holiday" to perform practical jobs around the farm. This in itself was absolutely fantastic. Although I have not been riding for a long time, to have the opportunity, under guidance and security, to be allowed to ride up into the mountains was fantastic. My best wishes to all, who likes horses and riding; visit the place as a part of your stay in the wonderful Competa. I´LL BE BACK NEXT YEAR!. "

huge thank you! Your generosity and support is unwaivering as we raised an amazing 2824€ to be shared equally between cudeca and axarquia animal rescue. In its second year and back by popular demand, 'Cómpeta Rocks On' and the Drums of Africa welcomed 179 audience members and performers on a steamy August 8th night with a colourful and vibrant performance setting the bench mark for those who were to follow and we were not disappointed. 14 year old ELLA wowed with her very mature, delightfully melodic and entertaining performance, please come back and visit us again soon ELLA! Geoff Murrell slid smoothly from his hosting role … thank you Geoff … to join Martin and Phil and MPG took us very comfortably through the next hour as the moon rose over the roof tops. Meanwhile the Tombola Table and Jo Ramsey Whale were kept very busy handing out a smorgasbord of prizes from Teddy Bears to Cases of Wine and everything imaginable in between. Moving up in gear, the Booze Brothers, a late but welcome addition to the line-up were on stage next. Rob Downes and David Beale were joined by London based Songwriter and Producer Paul Stratham on keyboard and guitar and they delivered an eclectic mix, amongst others their take on the Sex Pistols and Gary Numan which was hugely entertaining. At this point the doors opened and we welcomed a further 145 paying guests swelling our numbers close to 350 and boy wasn't it electric! The Luxury Raffle then took

Next up and to close the evening were GUIRI and what a crowd pleaser, there was not an inch of space left on the dance floor. Before they went on Pix Pickford met a huge fan who had travelled all the way from Barcelona to see GUIRI and had even bought along some original 'O Band' vinyl albums in a hope for an autograph. Steve got to meet his idol and got his autograph, one happy customer! Thank you to all the performers who played for free, we could not do it without you. Thanks also to all the volunteers and visiting relatives who made a massive contribution in delivering the evening so smoothly and also to Antonio & Belen El Recreo who committed to be a part of this event without question. To quote John Dunford “a great night from first to last. Incredibly good food, great service from the bars, excellent organisation” and again Maggie Woodward who wrote “the atmosphere was superb with a great party vibe with much dancing” . 6. Corner Shot 40mm Grenade Launcher With a hinged frame that extends the barrel of this grenade launcher horizontally at a 60 degree angle, a digital camera on the barrel and video screen, the Corner Shot allows sharpshooters to fire around corners. Capable of firing 60mm rounds and tear gas, the grenade launcher has a target range of 150 metres.

Here are 10 other gadgets and weapons the US military is preparing to roll out. 1. Transformer TX Real OffRoad The Transformer TX can be driven as a military ground vehicle then converted to fly as a helicopter and back again. These vehicles can be operated by humans or flydrive by themselves. Due for delivery in 2015. 2. Magpul Folding MachineGun-9 Developed for the US Secret Service, the Folding Machine-Gun can be disguised as a laptop battery before being unfolded into a fully functioning weapon capable of emptying a 9mm 30round clip. It fits into the back

pocket of most civilian trousers. Still in prototype phase. 3. Wildcat robot Moving uncannily like a live creature, the Wildcat can run at 16mph on flat surfaces, bounding and galloping like a real animal. It is designed to support combat troops on the ground and will eventually be able to run even more quickly over all types of terrain. 4. Armatix Digital Revolver Digital handgun with an electronic safety which can automatically be disabled via a wristwatch. The watch can be configured to require fingerprint authorisation, which is then analysed through the device's internal database and becomes activated for a restricted time period or until it's manually deactivated. After registering the wireless signal sent from the watch, the revolver's LED light on the back flashes green (unlocked) or red (locked) to inform the user of the gun's initial setting. 5. M32 Multiple Grenade Launcher As well as firing 40mm grenades at a rate of 18 a minute, the M32 can shoot off rounds which float to the ground via a parachute and capture aerial video footage.

7. AH-64 Apache attack helicopters New technology just rolled out by the US military allows Apache helicopter pilots to see targeting and surveillance data in full, highresolution colour, rather than black and white, giving them a huge advantage in spotting enemy positions. 8. Navy's Google Glass The Navy is developing technology similar to that employed for Google Glass which would allow superimposed computer-generated information to appear in front of a sailor’s eyes. 9. Reliant Autonomous Underwater Vehicle The Reliant is a robot that operates underwater to protect Navy vessels and American waters from enemy mines. Capable of acting without human input, it recently set a record by successfully completing a 315mile mission. 10. Satellite traffic cops Scientists are developing satellites which will work like traffic police to protect military drones and other airborne equipment. The Space-Based Telescopes for Actionable Refinement of Ephemeris (STARE) system is being designed in response to the more than 500,000 pieces of “space junk” thought to be orbiting the Earth.

have changed slightly and that there is a solution to most problems. Although, he did acknowledge that the solution could be costly with payments having to be made to the notary, lawyers, stamp duty etc. Having a clean title deed is still necessary in order to sell your house and whilst the situation has relaxed a bit Thomas does urge you to sort out any necessary paperwork issues sooner, rather than later. Also, there is no harm in getting your paperwork checked and a quote provided. Secondary to property sales, he is also involved in the making of wills for foreigners and dealing with their inheritance process. In the event of your death if you live or have assets in Spain the inheritance process could become very complicated and expensive for those relatives left behind. Also, inheritance tax could be very costly and making a Spanish Will could provide some tax relief. Thomas would also be happy to provide some advice on this matter.

T

homas Gant has had his premises in Competa for a year and a half now, having opened his lawyers practice in 2013. I spoke to him this month to find out how the business is going and any changes since we last met. Thomas explained he was exceptionally pleased with the business he receives from Competa and that it had indeed outweighed all expectations. He continues with the same work practice that he started with in 2013. That is, combining working for an extremely reputable lawyers company in the mornings on the coast, which he has been

doing since 2008, followed by working for himself from his offices in Competa in the afternoons. His office is open in the mornings and is managed by his secretary to take enquiries and to make appointments for the afternoons with Thomas in person. I asked what the majority of his work is and he answered 80 to 90% of his work is in the sale and purchase of homes. In 2012 Thomas explained it was certainly harder to sort paperwork issues as the law had become very strict with regard to having a faultless title deed. However, he believes now things

Thomas Gant also provides many other services besides wills and property sales which can be seen listed on his advert opposite. You can book appointments in the morning between 10.00 and 1.30pm and the appointments times will be for the afternoons of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 5 and 7.30pm. Clients feedback has been excellent over the last 1 ½ years and Thomas puts this down to really understanding the service that northern Europeans expect from a lawyer. Most of his clients are foreigners such as the British, Norwegian, Danish, Dutch, Swedish and Germans. He hopes that his business will continue to thrive in Competa for many years to come and hopes that he has become an invaluable asset to the village. See advert opposite.

WWW.RENFE.COM TRAVEL FARES Train Travel explained

S

panish train bookings usually open 60 days ahead, AVEs may open up to 90 days ahead. You can't book before reservations open! If you see 'Train blocked' in the search results it means that date or train hasn't opened for booking. The opening of reservations can be delayed for dates after the twiceyearly timetable change in June and December, as they're always late loading the data. The 60/90 days isn't exact, If you don't see the complete train service which you are expecting to see, and it's over a month to go before

departure, the chances are that not all trains have been loaded yet. There is an alternative to Renfe.com: Buying direct from Renfe is the cheapest option, their site works fine for me and always accepts my credit card. But I guesstimate from feedback that 25% of overseas travellers have credit card rejection problems when using Renfe.com, especially Americans or Australians, so if you have any problems there's an easy alternative,

www.petrabax.com/renfe. This is a private agency which links directly to the Renfe ticketing system, with Renfe's prices converted to US$. There's a small markup, of course, but it's in plain English with no payment problems. But try Renfe.com first! Go to www.renfe.com. Click 'Welcome' top right to switch it to English. Use the journey planner to check prices & buy tickets online. Do not click 'Timetables and Prices' as this will only show train times & full-price fares, it won't allow you

with a Mesa fare you must always buy all 4 seats. So if the Mesa fare is shown as €30, you pay €120 and

For a round trip, select 'Return', for a one-way trip, select 'Outward'. Enter your enquiry details and click 'search'. The system cannot generally handle changes of train, it will only show direct trains plus a few important connecting services that their webmasters have manually programmed in. So if you ask it for San Sebastian to Algeciras it won't show any trains as there are no direct ones. of course you'll see several trains if you ask it first for San Sebastian to Madrid, then separately for Madrid to Algeciras. On the search results page you'll see a list of trains, each with a price in all classes. 'Train blocked' simply means booking for that train or date haven't opened yet. Just wait and keep trying! Classes: Turista = 2nd class. Turista Plus = 2nd class service, but with a more comfortable Preferente-style seat. Preferente = 1st class. Club = premium 1st class, available only on AVE trains. If booking a sleeper, make sure it says 'cama' ('bed'). Cama Turista = bed in 4-berth sleeper. Cama Preferente = 1 or 2 bed, breakfast included. Cama G. Clase = gran clase 1 or 2 bed with private shower & toilet, dinner & breakfast included. Indiv = single-bed, doble = 2-berth. Fare types and what they mean: M = Mesa fare for small groups and families of up to 4 people. Mesa is Spanish for 'table'. The price shown is per seat for each of the four seats around a table, and

get all 4 seats. Which obviously only works out as €30 per person if there's 4 of you, it's €40 if there's 3 of you, €60 if there's 2 of you, or €120 if there's only 1 of you. The cost per person will appear in a box if you select a Mesa fare, to save you working it out. Obviously, if there's only 1 or 2 of you, it is usually cheaper to ignore the Mesa fare and go for a Promo fare. P = Promo fare, no refunds, no changes to travel plans, no seat choice. This is the cheapest fare, you'll be allocated seats (but if there's 2 or more of you you'll still get seats together, so don't worry) but you aren't given the chance to select specific seats from a seating plan and in Preferente class you won't qualify for access to the Sala Club first class lounges at main stations. P+ = Promo Plus fare, limited refunds, limited changes, seat choice. The next cheapest fare, you'll be given the chance to select a specific seat from a seating plan when you book and (if you're booking a Preferente class ticket) you'll get access to the Sala Club first class lounges at main stations with complimentary snacks, tea, coffee and beer. Promo and Promo+ fares are available to anyone of any age, and are the best deal for Spanish rail travel. If booking at very short notice you may also see some cheap Ultima Hora (last minute) fares.

Double-arrow = Return fare. If you're enquiring for a return trip, you'll see this option. It's simply a fully-flexible return fare (half of the return fare is shown for the outward and half for the return), this is the same as a FullyFlexible fare but with the 20% round trip discount applied. It's usually cheaper to book a Promo or Promo+ fare each way. F = Flexible fare, also known as Tarifa General or General price = the full price. Seating choices & lounge access as for Promo+. D = Duo, M = Mini à Deux, only found on the international trainhotels, these are cheap advance-purchase fares for two people travelling together, no refunds, no changes to travel plans. Just buy whichever is the cheapest. Can't see any cheap Promo fares? The cheap Promo fares are sometimes not loaded for the whole 60 days ahead, so if none of these cheap fares appear on any of the trains on your date of travel, only expensive full price fares, it may be worth waiting a little longer and the promo fares may appear, assuming it isn't such a busy day for travel in Spain that they've decided not to offer any, of course. Ignore the "-- Descuento F. Numerosa" box as it's almost certainly irrelevant for you, so leave it alone. The Numerous Family discount is a political Spain-wide thing for Spanish residents only. Check the journey details & price and click 'Continue' again. If you want further inforamtion try calling renfe for help on 00 34 902 10 94 20. The operators usually speak English.

Police in Paris have revealed that 51Kg of cocaine has gone missing from their central headquarters. The police chief said at a press conference, "We'll do whatever it takes to catch the culprits, even if we have to stay up all night. And all tomorrow night. And then maybe hit a club or something."

When I was working at Tesco today, a customer was being rude to me, so I scanned him in the eyes with the barcode reader. You should have seen the look on his face, it was priceless. I phoned my boss's mobile. "I'm on the train heading to the south coast now." "What..?" he answered, sounding a bit annoyed. "It's five o'clock in the morning! What are you doing on a train?"

“To Dave's fancy dress party," he replied. "I'm a tortoise." I said, "His party is not until tomorrow night!"

A fat bird started chatting me up in the club last night and I mentioned I'd just had my birthday this week.

He said, "I know, but I'm a tortoise."

"You tell me," I replied. "You're the one who told me to be in Brighton early this morning." Just like to give a shout out to the guy who plays triangle in our orchestra. As my flatmate Paddy headed towards the front door this morning, I said to him, "Where are you going dressed like that?"

Sudoko Answers from Page 74

Thanks for every ting.

"Well, happy birthday, sexy," she purred, stroking down my chest. "If I come back to yours tonight, could you put a smile on my face?" "Probably not," I told her. "There's no cake left."

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Amazing Artemisias

I

´m a bad driver in August, I admit, so perhaps I´m lucky to still be here in September. The problem with August is that we go away on holiday then; one eye is on the road and one is roaming through everyone's gardens. After all, it´s new turf and you have to see what´s growing there. This year we went to the beautiful Cantabrian coastline where the weather can be – and was – very changeable, often with strong salt-laden winds. Plantings were fairly predictable and there were four absolute stalwarts of coastal gardens – Pittosporum, Hortensia, Tamariscus and Artemisia. The first three fairly shout at you but Artemisia is a little more sneaky; not always instantly seen but almost always there.

the plants. Nevertheless it is found in most gardens, waysides, tracts of wasteland and large areas of the plains in the US are covered with it. Useless as a forage plants, even very few wild animals will feed on it, so it is left to run wild. It is amazingly tough, growing in extremes of heat, cold, wind, salt, drought – in general, all the inhospitable places.

If I call them wormwood or southernwood you´ll probably know better what I´m talking about for they are very common. One of our best loved culinary herbs – tarragon – is also an Artemisia though with a much better taste than other family members. “Bitter as wormwood” stems from the extreme bitterness of all parts of

The plants named after her are equally powerful, extremely aromatic, decorative and with a plethora of medicinal properties. Most are perennial and can be easily propagated from cuttings. Pruning is generally carried out in autumn though in cold areas it may be safer to leave them until early spring. In any case, a yearly

Artemis is Apollo´s sister and Queen of the witches. She is the Goddess of the moon, a midwife and the wisest herbalist. She is an untamed wild woman who runs with the wolves and is the Mother of all Creatures. In country areas, if you see Artemisia growing by a cottage door, or the ancient plant symbol painted on the door, you are at the home of a herbalist or midwife.

trim is beneficial to stop them falling apart. Artemisia absinthium, wormwood, is perhaps the best known member of the genus; it is also the strongest and most dangerous. It is the main ingredient of the liqueur absinthe and if you´ve ever got drunk on that, you´ll respect its power. It stimulates brain activity and creativity but repeated use disturbs the central nervous system and can cause seizures and fits. The drink of the Green Goddess drove many artists to excellence and excess – think of Vincent Van Gogh, Gaugin, Degas, Picasso and ToulouseLautrec – and that famous quote from Oscar Wilde, “After the first glass of absinthe you see things as you wish they were”. With an extremely bitter taste, the plant, when used with knowledge, is useful to ease indigestion and improve liver function. As its name implies, as far back as 1600 BC it was used to dispel intestinal worms. For organic gardeners, it is also a great insect repellent. Make moth bags from the dried leaves and twigs and scatter trimmings from the plant to repel ants. A weak wormwood tea

sprayed on mature plants is a great slug and snail deterrent don´t use on seedlings or soft young plants, nor on edible crops. (200 g wormwood leaves to 2 litres of water with a few drops of washing-up liquid) Artemisia arborescens Powis Castle has fine lacy branches that shimmer and glow. Extremely decorative, it makes a great silver contrast plant. Although usually situated in full sun, it will happily settle into quite shady areas too and is the one most commonly seen in mild maritime climates. Artemisia arbrotanum, or southernwood, can be used as a low growing and very aromatic hedge – similar to lavender. Try it around a chicken coop – the chickens won´t touch it but it will keep them clear of lice and fleas.

It has a delightful fruity camphor fragrance and lush feathery green leaves. Plant and admire Artemis´s plants under her piercing moonlight when she will make them glow softly, so they appear to be lightly dusted with silvery frost. P.S. Because I´ve been so struck by the devastation caused by the fire we´ve decided at the Garden Centre to help you all we can. Caribbean cruise liner, (360 metres long, with 16 decks and weighing 100,000 tons), boasts a maximum capacity of 6,360 passengers and comes complete with a spectacular park with over 12,000 natural plants. There’s also a quiet zone inspired by the classic wooden piers - like at Coney Island - that stretch out into the sea, an open-air aquatic theatre suitably equipped for acrobatics, the deepest onboard swimming pool and the first carousel ever to sail the high seas.

Thousands of music lovers will head to Victoria Stadium for the event that has more than 20 acts appearing across four stages. Headlining the festival are Irish rock band The Script, whose singer Danny O’Donoghue starred as a coach on the BBC’s TV talent show ‘The Voice’. Other musicians include British singer Rita Ora, X-Factor winner James Arthur and fellow Brit and reggae legend Maxi Priest. Other acts include Roger Hodgson (formerly of English rock band Supertramp), chart sensation John Newman and Spandau Ballet’s Tony Hadley. Organisers said 10,000 attended last year and they are hoping for a similar turnout this year. General entry tickets are priced at £55 for anyone aged 13 and over. Seated tickets will be reserved this year and will cost £80 - but VIP tickets have already sold out.

All this as well as a gym, a spa, shops, 4 swimming pools, 2 surfing simulators and a wide variety of shows and musicals. The ship will be moored in Malaga’s port on 11 September from 8am until 8pm.
