Editors Note... Last month there was a lot to do, see and listen to in the area over the Easter weekend. Well done especially to those who organised the events that raised much needed money for charity. We will also look forward to hearing more about the new “pop up dinner” organised evenings in aid of Cudecca. .
I am writing this Editors note a little early as I am off on holiday to see my brother which me and my family are really looking forward to. I have only seen him a couple of times in the last ten years and I am so excited I haven’t stopped talking about it. Thanks to my brother the holiday has been made possible and I am really looking forward to catching up with him after all this time. I am sure I will have a lot to talk about next month!

NEWS IN SPAIN News from around the Country
A
dead sperm whale that washed up on Spain's south coast had swallowed 17kg of plastic waste dumped into the sea by farmers tending greenhouses that produce tomatoes and other vegetables for British supermarkets. Scientists were amazed to find the 4.5 tonne whale had swallowed 59 different bits of plastic – most of it thick transparent sheeting used to build greenhouses in southern Almeria and Granada. A clothes hanger, an ice-cream tub and bits of mattress were also found. The plastic had eventually blocked the animal's stomach and killed it, according to researchers from the Doñana national park research centre in Andalusia. Researchers at first found it hard to believe that the 10-metre animal had swallowed the vast amount of plastic they found protruding through a tear in its stomach. In all the whale's stomach contained two dozen pieces of transparent plastic, some plastic bags, nine metres of rope, two stretches of hosepipe, two small flower pots and a plastic spray canister. All were typical of the closely packed Almeria greenhouses that cover about 40,000 hectares – and are clearly visible in satellite photographs taken from space.

irports in Spain will start charging a euro for passengers to use luggage trolleys, according to AENA. They intend to start doing so in Madrid's Barajas airport and then gradually extend the move to six other airports. These will include Tenerife South, Alicante, Barcelona's El Prat airport, Palma de Mallorca, Málaga and Gran Canaria – all the major flight destinations for Spain's most popular holiday resort towns. The State-run airline governing body, AENA, says this is part of a plan to claw back 3.2 million euros and clear its debts. It has defended the decision by saying Madrid airport's luggage trolleys currently cost 3.7 million euros a year to maintain, but this will reduce to 500,000 euros if they charge per use – a saving of 3.2 million. And the same action has been taken in other European airports already, including Germany's Hahn, Munich, Cologne and Düsseldorf; Italy's Milan, Genoa, Torino and RomeFiumicino, and Athens. Also, a euro per trolley remains considerably less than the charge made in certain UK airports, including Manchester, Bristol, Luton, Birmingham, Leeds and Cardiff, where it costs between one and two pounds a time.
ndalucia and the rest of Spain are attracting fewer but higher-spending tourists, according to the latest government figures. In January Andalucía received 8.2 per cent fewer foreign tourists than during the same month of last year, yet these 267,637 visitors spent a total of 303 million euros, an increase of 9.2 per cent. The figures were published in March in the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce’s Egatur report on tourism spending and Frontur report on foreign tourist arrivals.
H
ealth cuts are being particularly badly felt in small inland towns of Málaga province as a lack of substitutions for absent staff members leaves some health centres with "deficient coverage" and poses "a risk to the population," said the CSIF public employees union last week. The union says that given the already minimal staffing levels of the health centres in rural inland areas, un-substituted absences due to holidays or illness can leave some centres "empty and unattended for hours". The situation arises when remaining staff, working on their own, are called out for an emergency or house call, leaving the centre "unattended," it said in a written release.

mother and her three children had a "miracle" escape when their car was swept into a swollen river and they had to be rescued through the boot. Two workmen saw Mariel Murphy, 38, furiously banging on her window calling for help. The water was seeping in and had began to reach the chins of her three children. they were only able to breath by pushing themselves up against the roof and were unable to open the doors. the family were saved when the workmen, Neal Bliss and Stephen Andrews, dragged them out through the boot. The fire brigade later told Mrs Murphy that the men should not have intervened, but she said: “It's a miracle they were there and I'm hugely grateful to them. They saved myself and my three children.”

ccording to the Taiwanese arm of US Polytron Technologies, the transparent handset will go into production this year following six years of development. Made of conductive glass, the see-through phone is ultra lightweight and is said to have almost as much functionality as a contemporary smartphone. Touch activated on one side but displaying images on both. The handset does contain some nontransparent parts such as the battery. However, these components have all been pushed to the margins. With a screen 0.3 inches bigger than Apple's iPhone 5, Polytron Technologies mobile is also 25 per cent lighter.

5 MOST AMAZING COINCIDENCES Meaningless coincidences or urban myths
1. James Dean's car curse In September 1955, James Dean was killed in a horrific car accident whilst he was driving his Porsche sports car. After the crash the car was seen as very unlucky. a) When the car was towed away from accident scene and taken to a garage, the engine slipped out and fell onto a mechanic, shattering both of his legs. b) Eventually the engine was bought by a doctor, who put it into his racing car and was killed shortly afterwards, during a race. Another racing driver, in the same race, was killed in his car, which had James Dean's driveshaft fitted to it. c) When James Dean's Porsche was later repaired, the garage it was in was destroyed by fire. d) Later the car was displayed in Sacramento, but it fell off it's mount and broke a teenager's hip. e) In Oregon, the trailer that the car was mounted on slipped from it's towbar and smashed through the front of a shop. f) Finally, in 1959, the car mysteriously broke into 11 pieces while it was sitting on steel supports. 2. a young (if incredibly careless) mother must have been eternally grateful to a man named Joseph Figlock. As Figlock was walking down the street, the mother's baby fell from a high window onto Figlock. The baby's fall was broken and both man and baby were unharmed. A stroke of luck on its own, but a year later, the very same baby fell from the very same window onto poor, unsuspecting Joseph Figlock as he was again passing beneath. And again, they both survived the event. (Source: Mysteries of the Unexplained) 3. A bullet that reached its destiny years later Henry Ziegland thought he had dodged fate. In 1883, he broke off a relationship with his girlfriend who, out of distress, committed suicide. The girl's brother was so enraged that he hunted down Ziegland and shot him. The brother, believing he had killed Ziegland, then turned his gun on himself and took his own life. But Ziegland had not been killed. The bullet, in fact, had only grazed his face and then lodged in a tree. Ziegland surely thought himself a lucky man. Some years later, however, Ziegland decided to cut down the large tree, which still had the bullet in it. The task seemed so formidable that he
4.Twin Boys, twin lives The stories of identical twins' nearly identical lives are often astonishing, but perhaps none more so than those of identical twins born in Ohio. The twin boys were separated at birth, being adopted by different families. Unknown to each other, both families named the boys James. And here the coincidences just begin. Both James grew up not even knowing of the other, yet both sought law-enforcement training, both had abilities in mechanical drawing and carpentry, and each had married women named Linda. They both had sons whom one named James Alan and the other named James Allan. The twin brothers also divorced their wives and married other women - both named Betty. And they both owned dogs which they named Toy. Forty years after their childhood separation, the two men were reunited to share their amazingly similar lives. (Source: Reader's Digest, January 1980) 5 Just like Edgar Allan Poe's book In the 19th century, the famous horror writer, Egdar Allan Poe, wrote a book called 'The narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym'. It was about four survivors of a shipwreck who were in an open boat for many days before they decided to kill and eat the cabin boy whose name was Richard Parker. Some years later, in 1884, the yawl, Mignonette, foundered, with only four survivors, who were in an open boat for many days. Eventually the three senior members of the crew, killed and ate the cabin boy. The name of the cabin boy was Richard Parker.

official lighting of the lanterns where half a million little lights are turned on at once, especially at the main gate. People dress in traditional costumes — not only on the fairground but in the city as well. It's wonderful and bizarre to see woman in costumes of the 18th century. Watch out for the traditional carriages drawn by horses carrying local girls clad in bright and colourful flamenco dresses through the city streets. Casetas (marquee tents) are set up at the all night flamenco parties, so just wander through the spectacularly decorated tents complete with food, music and dancing to experience the atmosphere. The fiesta... The Seville April Fair centres on the flamenco, horses, and bullfighting, making it a typical Spanish affair! Each day the fiesta begins with a parade called the 'Paseo de Caballos' where local girls in their flamenco outfits are carried through the city in striking carriages pulled by horses. In the evening there are bullfights at the La Real Maestranza – best avoid this area if you find bullfighting repulsive.

week long celebration the festivities end with a fireworks display, also at midnight. The event site is the 'Real de la Feria', which becomes a city in its own right for the week owing to the extent of this fair. The grand opening of "La Feria de April" is done with "El Alumbrado" (the lighting)which means the
Inside the casetas There are thousands of decorated 'casetas' set up at the fairground, some of which belong to the wellknown people of Seville. Not everyone is allowed inside the casetas, it’s a private pavilion and only relatives and invitees can enter. Most of the casetas have ongoing flamenco performances, loud music, partying and dancing, and drinks and tapas being served. Seville’s April Fair was started in 1846, surprisingly, by two non Sevillians, a Basque and a Catalan. The main purpose of these two industrious founders was no other than to improve business (trade and agriculture)!

From the gardens follow the path around the Parador where you’ll get great views of the gorge then cross the Puente Nuevo which takes you into the old part of the town. Turn right into Tenorio, at the bottom of which is Plaza Maria Auxliadora where you will find the Palacio Mondragon, a nobleman’s house formerly the home of King Abomelik. Follow the road round to one of the most beautiful spots in Ronda, Plaza Duquesa de Parcent where you’ll see three beautiful churches (Santa María La Mayor is most impressive). This main square is of Arab origin and housed the Mosque, market, jail and castle. The ayuntamiento (town hall) was built in 1734 on the top of the old shops. It was restored in 1818 after the damage caused by the French.
VISIT RONDA Take a trip to Ronda and see the sights.
T
he beautiful town of Ronda lies 60km up a winding mountain road from Marbella in the mountain range known as the Serranía de Ronda. It stands at an altitude of 739m and has approximately 35,000 inhabitants. It is one of the most visited towns in Andalucia with most people arriving on day excursions from the Costa del Sol. Some artefacts found around Ronda date back to prehistoric times (as far as 28000 BC). Every architectural era is represented here including Roman, Arabic, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. Most of the important sights in Ronda can be seen in a few hours as most are located around the new bridge area and within the old part of the town over the bridge from the Parador. Begin at the bullring which is one of the oldest and most beautiful in Spain. Adjoining Ronda’s bullring is the Bullfighting Museum which displays interesting relics of Ronda’s bullfighting history.
16 The Grapevine
Next go into the gardens behind the bullring, along Paseo Blas Infante. From here are the best panoramic views over the mountains. Ronda is split into two sections by a spectacular 100m deep gorge called El Tajo. On one side is the old Moorish town and on the other is El Mercadillo which is a more recent urban section. The two parts are joined by the Puente Nuevo (New Bridge). This was built in 1751 and took 42 years to build. The Parador Hotel stands right on the side of the gorge. Apparently, after completing the bridge, its architect Martín de Aldehuela was leaning over the side to check his work. As a gust of wind caught his hat, he grabbed for it, lost balance and fell to his death in the gorge! Have you read Hemingway’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls”? Do you remember the bit where prisoners from a village were thrown to their death into a gorge? Well his story was based on true events in Ronda.
From here head up Calle Arminan where you will find a selection of quaint craft and antique shops as well as three interesting museums: The Hunting Museum, the Lara Museum and the Bandit Museum. At the end of the street you find yourself back at the bridge and next to the Casa del Rey Moro (House of the Moorish King) and the Convent of Santo Domingo. The House of the Moorish King has wonderful gardens from which you can descend to the underground mines built by Abomelik in the 14th century. If you head further down this street (Marques de Parada) you’ll come to a Renaissance mansion called the Palacio del Marqués de Salvatierra then come to two old town bridges dating back to 1616 (Puente Viejo). Finally at the bottom of the hill you’ll reach the well preserved Baños Arabes (Arab Baths) from the 13th Century which were accidentally discovered when the house above them collapsed.

when a group of court jesters and fools told the Roman emperor that they could do a better job of running the empire. Constantine, amused, allowed a jester named Kugel to be king for one day. Kugel passed an edict calling for absurdity on that day, and the custom became an annual event.

APRIL FOOLS DAY Where did it originate?
A
pril Fools' Day, sometimes called All Fools' Day, is one of the most light-hearted days of the year. Its origins are uncertain. Some see it as a celebration related to the turn of the seasons, while others believe it stems from the adoption of a new calendar. New Year's Day Moves Ancient cultures, including those of the Romans and Hindus, celebrated New Year's Day on or around April 1. It closely follows the vernal equinox (March 20th or March 21st.) In medieval times, much of Europe celebrated March 25, the Feast of Annunciation, as the beginning of the new year. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII ordered a new calendar (the Gregorian Calendar) to replace the old Julian Calendar. The new calendar called for New Year's Day to be celebrated Jan. 1. That year, France adopted the reformed calendar and shifted New Year's day to Jan. 1. According to a popular explanation, many people either refused to accept the new date, or
24 The Grapevine
did not learn about it, and continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April 1. Other people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending them on "fool's errands" or trying to trick them into believing something false. Eventually, the practice spread throughout Europe. Problems With This Explanation There are at least two difficulties with this explanation. The first is that it doesn't fully account for the spread of April Fools' Day to other European countries. The Gregorian calendar was not adopted by England until 1752, for example, but April Fools' Day was already well established there by that point. The second is that we have no direct historical evidence for this explanation, only conjecture, and that conjecture appears to have been made more recently. Constantine and Kugel Another explanation of the origins of April Fools' Day was provided by Joseph Boskin, a professor of history at Boston University. He explained that the practice began during the reign of Constantine,
"In a way," explained Prof. Boskin, "it was a very serious day. In those times fools were really wise men. It was the role of jesters to put things in perspective with humour." This explanation was brought to the public's attention in an Associated Press article printed by many newspapers in 1983. There was only one catch: Boskin made the whole thing up. It took a couple of weeks for the AP to realize that they'd been victims of an April Fools' joke themselves. Spring Fever It is worth noting that many different cultures have had days of foolishness around the start of April, give or take a couple of weeks. The Romans had a festival named Hilaria on March 25, rejoicing in the resurrection of Attis. The Hindu calendar has Holi, and the Jewish calendar has Purim. Perhaps there's something about the time of year, with its turn from winter to spring, that lends itself to lighthearted celebrations. Observances Around the World April Fools' Day is observed throughout the Western world. Practices include sending someone on a "fool's errand," looking for things that don't exist; playing pranks; and trying to get people to believe ridiculous things. The French call April 1 Poisson d'Avril, or "April Fish." French children sometimes tape a picture of a fish on the back of their schoolmates, crying "Poisson d'Avril" when the prank is discovered.

Got a newborn baby? Want to keep them safe from evil spirits? Do what they do at the El Colacho festival in Castillo de Murcia, near Burgos, and lie them on the ground and have grown men dressed as devils jump over them. Never mind protection from evil spirits, I'd just like to know who is protecting the babies from the grown men dressed as devils that are jumping over them. Hypochondriacs who don't get this protection in their infancy can take part in the Hogueras in Granada & Jaen on December 21st, where people jump through bonfires to protect themselves from illness!
STRANGE FESTIVALS IN SPAIN Throwing, jumping and fighting!?
S
ometimes Spain can be a very surreal place. It is a country where you might hear Christmas carols in August (as part of the New Year's Eve in August celebrations)! The fountains are filled with wine (in Cadiar in February and October and in Toro, Castilla y Leon in August) and farmers march their sheep through the centre of Madrid just because they can. It is a country where some of the world's most traditional festivals take on a peculiar twist - with scatalogical Christmas traditions in Catalonia and Salamanca's bizarre Easter Monday tradition of welcoming back the city's 'ladies of the night' after their expulsion for Lent (in their Lunes de Aguas festival). The Tomatina tomato fight is one of the most famous of Spain's bizarre festivals, but it isn't the only time the Spanish throw things at each other. In Lanjar贸n in the Alpujarras (near Granada), the locals have a giant water fight every June 24th. A little stickier is the Batalla del Vino in Haro, La Rioja every June 29th, where the locals fight each other with wine.
30 The Grapevine
Its OK, they make lots of it in La Rioja, Spain's most important wine region, so there's plenty to spare! If water, wine and tomatoes aren't enough for you, how about ant throwing? This is what the inhabitants of Laza, Galicia do at Carnival time each year. Even worse is the Battle of the Dead Rat, in the Valencian town of El Puig during the fiesta of San Pedro Nolasco. Meanwhile, the Cascamorras in Baza and Gaudix, Granada, (September 6th and 9th) just seems like an excuse to pick on someone. An old battle between the two towns is re-enacted, where an inhabitant of Gaudix is sent to Baza to steal the image of the Virgen de la Piedad, is pelted with tar and paint and inevitably fails in his quest. He then returns to Gaudix, where he is pelted again for having failed. And this happens every year. You'd think they poor guy would have learned by now, wouldn't you? Finally, the Lou Reed-loving Valencians viciously try to hit you with flowers in the Batallas de los Flores (Battle of Flowers).
If the above blessings work (and you don't get burned to death in a bonfire or trampled on by grown men dressed as devils jumping over you), you may be lucky enough to survive a near-death experience later in life. How should you show your thanks? Well, if you come from the town of Las Nieves, near Pontevedra, you show up to mass during the Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme in your coffin! I'm guessing that the following week the town holds a funeral for all those who suffer heart attacks at the sight of lots of people getting out of coffins at mass a week before. Early September in Lekeitio (Lequeiti), the Fiesta de los Gansos (Goose Festival) sees a dead goose hung over the harbor while men jump to catch hold of it, trying to see who can hold on for the longest. Animal rights activists have had some success here, as in the past the goose would have been alive when this was done. Another famous event that has been famously curtailed (but allegedly still takes place) is the tossing a goat from a bell tower in Manganeses de la Polverosa. The town council out lawed the event in 1992, even though it was ominously admitted at the time that what people do in their own time is their own business.

CUDECA COMPETA UPDATE The next pop up dinner and this years race for life
Y
ou have probably read in the local press of the financial crisis that has now hit Cudeca. The current economic situation that we are all experiencing resulted in Cudeca closing their 2012 books with losses in excess of 400,000 Euros
This was due to a number of reasons‌..a) the Spanish saving banks reducing their amount of sponsorship b) Cudeca have been unable to sell any of the properties that have been left to them despite lowering price values. c) The 12 Cudeca charity shops have seen a huge reduction in the number of donated items. Cudeca's Board of Trustees together with the Board of Directors are constantly evaluating the difficult situation, measures are being explored to increase revenue and reduce costs. One of the first steps which are already underway is to reduce employee salaries. There will be an extraordinary board meeting during May 2013 to decide the way forward. I was therefore delighted when I was approached by Debbie Warner with a new fundraising venture for Competa and surrounding area; Cudeca Pop-Up
32 The Grapevine
Diners, and willingly agreed to assist her. The first event was on Friday 22nd February where our first hosts were Inez and Enmanuel from the Rural Alberdini Hotel, Competa, when over 50 diners came along and experienced Three Curries of the World. The menu included some unusual dishes; Thai Son-in-Law Eggs and Thai Pork Jungle Curry to name but two. The dessert was profiteroles with hot chocolate fudge sauce., see photograph of Andy from E.G.O. hair and beauty who surely must win the prize for consuming the most Profiteroles!! All photographs courtesy of Martin Robinson. The evening concluded with a Tombola stall and Geoff Murrell kindly donated his musical time to Cudeca to enable everyone to dance the night away. As always, I had a wonderful team of volunteers who make events like this possible. The evening raised e700, a fantastic achievement for our first event. The next Pop-Up Diner will be on Friday, 31st May at Cortijco Paco. For further details and menu, please see
Our next Competa Cudeca fund raising event is DAY FOR LIFE on Sunday, 28th April. The day will start will our annual WALK FOR LIFE, a 5km sponsored walk around the village of Competa This will be our 8th annual walk and has to date raised over e24,000. The Alberdini will then host the remainder of the day from 11am, with lots of entertainment for adults and children. There will be a separate dedicated children's activity area. So please come along and join us, have fun at what promises to be a fantastic day, enjoy some Paella and support a great cause. Cudeca is a charitable organisation that provides palliative care to advanced cancer sufferers within the province of Malaga. Finally, a reminder that our CompetaCudeca Cancer Care Support Group continues to meet in Competa on the third Thursday of each month, so if you or your family are cancer sufferers, please come along and join our informal group. This help and support is available to you irrespective of where you are being treated. For further information, please contact me, Cindy Jones on 665156467 or email cindyjones19@hotmail.com. Due to the success of the Competa group, Cudeca are also supporting a group in Nerja on the second Thursday of each month, for details please contact susanhannam@cudeca.org Thank you Cindy Jones, Cudeca Volunteer

A BIT BIZARRE Bizarre stuff from around the world
T
he Florida Keys woman known as "the sea hag" who shot and killed her neighbour after he refused to give her a beer has been sentenced to 30 years behind bars. Carolyn Dukeshire, 62, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the July 2012 shooting of 64-year-old Martin Mazur, according to KeysNet.com. Dukeshire, who was facing a first-degree murder charge and made a deal with prosecutors, submitted a statement to the judge saying she was remorseful and would pay the rest of her life for losing her composure.Police say Dukeshire had approached Mazur outside his Conch Key home and asked him for a can of Busch Light. "I have absolutely nothing for you," he replied. That's when Dukeshire, who had no previous arrest history in Monroe County, shot Mazur five times. He later died at a nearby hospital.

that the woman bit the intruder when he put his hand over her mouth. He then fled. He said the woman was treated at a hospital and that police are still looking for the intruder.

t a Bingo game in a New Hampshire senior centre broke out into a fight after two women started arguing over Avon products. Officers in Portsmouth, responded to a call reporting of "some pushing and shoving" over the sale of Avon products, OpposingViews.com reported. It seems that one of the women, a regular bingo player, was upset that the other woman in the altercation had set up a table to sell Avon products.

ith its violent crimes, high unemployment, dwindling population and financial crisis, Detroit was named as the most miserable city in the United States. It toppled Miami, which held the title last year, and surpassed Flint, Michigan, Rockford and Chicago in Illinois and Modesto, California, which rounded out the five most unhappy urban areas.

royal penguin found stranded on a New Zealand beach has died. The penguin was found by hikers. It was emaciated and suffering kidney failure and was taken to the Wellington Zoo. It was just the fourth time over the past 100 years that a royal penguin has been found on the North Island of New Zealand. They generally live more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) away around Macquarie Island, about halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica. Lisa Argilla, the veterinary science manager at the zoo, said Friday that they suspect the penguin suffered multiple organ failure. It was severely underweight, she said, and had no reserves. She said the zoo did the best it could.

In last month's Grapevine we told you about Sebastian the galgo, a dog who had been living on the streets of Alhama de Granada and who we took to a shelter in La Herradura. We're extremely pleased to say that Sebastian has been lucky enough to be rehomed by a young couple here in Spain. We would like to thank Karin and Yaiza for taking care of him so well while he waited for his new family. We have also been trying to find a home for Penny, one of the fifty dogs rescued from Dee's house back in October. Since the rescue Penny has been fostered here in Competa, but unfortunately nobody came forward to offer her a permanent home. However, we have just been informed that her foster family have decided they would like to keep her, so she will now remain happily in the home she has grown accustomed to over the past five months. Brilliant news! Karina, a beautiful, sweet-natured dog, currently being fostered in Competa, is still looking for her permanent home. If you can offer her the love she deserves, Action for Animals will, as usual, cover the costs for vaccinations, neutering, microchip and passport. Can you rehome Karina?

date in your diary and come along and support us. You don't even have to bring a dog to join in the fun. We'll have a tombola, raffle, lucky dip and one or two surprises. If you would like to sponsor a trophy, donate a raffle prize or have a stall on the day please contact Nina on 660586040. More details about Scruffs and a full programme of events will appear in next month's Grapevine.
We are always looking for foster families to take care of dogs and cats until they can find permanent homes, so if you would like to be part of this rewarding work please contact Nina. Don't forget to come and visit us in The Charity Shop on Avenida de la Constitucion 59. We have lots of new stock in every day and if you're spring cleaning please bring us anything you no longer need. We rely on your continued support. Thank you! Nina Cordoray Downes

ONE STEP AT A TIME by Maggie Woodward
B
ack in 2011, my eldest daughter Ella proposed two exciting projects. She had been living in Sydney, Australia since November 2009 and was planning her return to the UK in early summer 2012. Her first suggestion was that I meet her somewhere midway and spend a few weeks travelling together. The second was that I join her in her quest to walk part of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela during her thirtieth year, in 2013. Ella did lots of research relating to the first expedition and we duly met in Bangkok in July 2012, where we spent a few days before travelling to Sri Lanka and finally to India, taking in the 'golden triangle' and travelling between Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. I was tasked with researching the Camino de Santiago trip and discovered that The Way of St James has been a major pilgrim route since medieval times. There are many routes with various starting points, all converging at Santiago de Compostela in the north west of Spain. Our original, very loose, plan had been to walk perhaps the minimum distance necessary in order to be granted a 'compostela', the certificate
44 The Grapevine
awarded to pilgrims who have walked at least 100 kilometres to reach Santiago, and have an appropriately stamped pilgrim's passport indicating the starting point and places visited en route. However, having been inspired by the accounts of pilgrims who have walked the entire Camino Frances, commencing their journey in St Jean Pied de Port on the French side of the Pyrenees, crossing into Spain on the first day of their pilgrimage, and taking approximately 30 - 35 days to complete their trek, I now feel it would be cheating to claim a 'compostela' without walking the full Camino. As neither of us has commitments at our start date in mid April, we both feel we should face the challenge and walk the full 800km, plus an additional 80km to Finisterre if we have time. I have never been a walker and for the past five years have been wandering the local tracks on horseback, so it has been necessary to start training to build up some strength for the journey that lies ahead. I started off with walks of 6+km and have so far built up to 25km. We will be walking an average of 25-30km per day and I am hoping that my
ageing joints will see me through and that I don't suffer with painful blisters. Although I seem to have spent a fortune kitting myself out with the necessary hiking paraphernalia, the actual journey is relatively inexpensive, as there are pilgrim hostels all along the route where we can stay for between 5-10 euros per night, albeit in huge dormitories with no privacy and a lot of snoring to contend with. One reason for writing this article is to say that I am hoping to raise some sponsorship money in aid of Cudeca (all money raised will go to the charity, none towards funding my trip). The other reason is that by broadcasting my intention of walking 800km, I will be more likely to complete my journey and not give up if the going gets tough. I will be reporting on our progress via a blog which can be followed at http://magwood.wordpress.com/, and if you are willing to sponsor me in favour of Cudeca please email me at magwood@live.com Maggie Woodward

ANOTHER EVIL WEEVIL! Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh
W
e are still reeling from the attacks of the palm weevil or picudorojoand we now need to square up to another attacker – the agave weevil or picudonegro, scyphophorusacup unctatus. It doesn't yet seem to be in our area of the Costa del Sol but, make no mistake, it's on its way!
46 The Grapevine
The huge and seemingly invincible agave Americana that we see growing wild and in so many public gardens and parks and private gardens is its preferred host. Incredible as it seems, this little bug can topple those giants and in a very short time too.
A native of the Southern states of U.S. and, in particular, Mexico, its favourite food source is the agave, though it will also attack aloes, yuccas and dragon trees. The bigger, chunkier and more fibrous the plant, the more they seem to like it so large specimens are really under threat.
To advertise call 637 028 873
It was first detected in 2007 in Barcelona area and, although this weevil cannot fly, it has now spread to the Southern part of Alicante province. Alarm bells are ringing all over the Costa Blanca since it was first detected there some 18 months ago and several hundred agaves have already been destroyed. Know your enemy! The adult weevil is about 2 cm long, black and wingless with the typical weevil snout that bores holes deep into the base of the succulent plants to lay eggs – up to 500 of them. But worse still, when the female bores into the plant, her saliva introduces a bacterium called erwinacarotovorawhich causes a fast developing rotting of the plant, making the flesh easier for the grubs to digest. So the attack is two-pronged. The voracious tunnelling of the grubs destroys the water-transporting tissues of the plant and, by tunnelling their way down to ground level, they sever the plant from its roots. Collapse is very quick. Up until now, the response by authorities has been to throw away affected examples in an attempt to stop the spread, but spreading it is and it seems like more desperate measures will be needed but little investigative work has been carried out as yet. The use of triazinegranules, applied monthly around the base of agaves seems to kill the beetles and grubs as will consistent use of either imidaclopridor clorpirifosbut all are very aggressive to the environment and can enter the water table. Regular spraying with neem oil would seem to be the best bio solution at the moment. The picudorojo and the negroseem to have a lot in

common. Both live inside the plant, eating away and causing collapse. The damage is often not detected until it is too late for effective treatment and both are resistant to many of our 'milder' insecticides. Deep inside the plant, the micro-climate created means that they are impervious to freezing temperatures in winter and, although they are dormant then, they are pupating to rise like a phoenix when warmer weather returns.
Conference pears and other rarities. They will make fabulous Christmas gifts!
The first agaves were probably introduced into Spain during the 1570's by the Toledan botanical doctor, Francisco Hernandez. Now, like our palms, they are being massacred. Throughout the centuries, the hefty flower spikes were traditionally used for steps and stairs because of their enormous strength. The name agave signifies, in Greek, marvellous. It will indeed be sad if this marvellous dinosaur of a plant is wiped out by such a tiny attacker.

There is one other way to beat these baddies. You know the typical grub found in the bottom of Tequila bottles? Well, it is the grub of the agave weevil – after all, the Mexicans, too, had to find some way to control it. So, if we all promise to drink a bottle of Tequila a day, we could probably wipe out this latest scourge. Anyone game? Over the years so many of you have asked me for Bramley apple trees – well I now have a source and am taking orders for bare-rooted trees which will be available at the end of the year. The price will be €50 as we are bringing them in from England. If you'd like to order, please drop me an email or ring me. I can also obtain other desirables like Victoria plum, Russet, Blenheim Orange, Beauty of Bath apples, Black Worcester and

Can you risk buyers not being able to find your property for sale on the websites they love to use? In our opinion, you cannot! Add to this the fact that buyers like to start searching on-line, prefer to buy directly from the seller, save money and get more information including exact map locations - Creative Property Marketing offers you the most amazing opportunity to appeal to today's modern house buyer... We will create the most attractive
and unique property details possible: - The best photos available, the most comprehensive and appealing description of your property, key features, information about the locality, Google Map locator, the amenities your property benefits from and distances to important places such as the local airport, the beach, village, town or city centres etc. Buyers love the additional information we give them and this encourages immediate enquiries from informed and interested buyers. On average, we receive and pass onto our sellers 100 enquiries per month. They are buyers from the UK, Germany, France, Scandinavia, Russia, Spain, Ireland, the USA and across the world. From there, our sellers organise to meet with the buyers and show them around their property.
We offer sellers a friendly, professional and honest service and probably more valuable knowledge and support than they ordinarily receive from the average estate agent. It is rare also that estate agents provide your property with this much exposure and they charge a fee! We can also provide, free of charge valuations should this be required. Please call us or send an email to discuss how we can help you and to ask us any questions you may have. WINTER WANDERINGS! The Final Part
O
ctober, and with Merlin the Motorhome ready and waiting, we were on the road again. I'm getting to like Dover the more we stay there. You are allowed to park overnight on a slip road next to the shingle beach if you are taking the early morning ferry, and we usually make a point of arriving early in good time to have a look around. There are lovely walks up and over the famous White Cliffs, and the town itself is obviously proud of its maritime heritage. The architecture is bold and solid, and a peep inside the four-square houses reveals telescopes and models of sailing vessels in abundance. On arrival in Calais we thought we knew where we were going for our first stopover. A place we had been to before near the Lac d'Orient to the east of Paris, and advertised in the latest edition of our Aires of France book. Wrong! It was now closed, and so we pushed on to the next nearest one. It was getting dark by this time, and we were in unknown territory, when I spotted in the distance a huge illuminated big wheel - quite unexpected in the middle of nowhere. Imagine our surprise then when our sat-nav was heading straight for it - it being Nigloland, an enormous theme park. With many other motorhomes we were parked outside of the

pirate-themed hotel, which was elaborately decorated for Hallowe'en with animated figures of witches and warlocks, and hundreds of pumpkins. It was all very well done, but we declined the invitation to the free evening magic show. There is a limit to the amount of excitement you can have in one day! Next day saw us bowling along in the glorious autumn sunshine through pretty villages, heading towards the Swiss border, with the snow-capped Alps in the distance. The rolling hills soon gave way to the impressive mountainous area of the Haut Jura, and we were soon driving in snow-clad pine forests, glimpsing sparkling lakes through the trees. We came across the town of Nantua at the edge of one of these lakes, where there was a very poignant stone sculpture dedicated to more than one thousand local people, many of whom were Jews, who were transported out of the town by the Nazis in World War 2, and of whom only about two hundred returned the others having been executed. The sculpture, which depicts an emaciated body lying beneath a stone slab, was made in 1948 by Louis Leygue, himself a deportee. Nantua lies in the Ain Department, which was the birthplace of the French Resistance Movement.
And so on to the delightful and utterly charming town of Annecy. I had long wanted to visit as it is twinned with Cheltenham, my home town, and I was pleased that it lived up to expectations. As it is so picture-postcard perfect, situated as it is in stunning scenery at the edge of a beautiful lake,it is inevitably visited by thousands of tourists every year and I can well understand why. The Vieille Ville is threaded by canals which are crossed by several little bridges, connecting the passages lined with buildings dating back to the sixteenth century. The town is kept in pristine condition, with floral displays in every available location - chrysanthemums being the flower of choice. After passing through the spectacular French Alpine region, the mountains gradually gave way to the hills of Provence. We stopped in the town of Sisteron, which appeared to be a mecca for artists as nearly every shop in the small, winding streets of the old town displayed artwork of some kind. We also visited the impressive citadelle which dominates the town, and spent an interesting morning learning about its chequered history. Its strategic position on the River Durance has meant that it has been involved in military skirmishes and wars dating from the thirteenth century right up to 1944, when it was bombed in World War 2 by Anglo-American forces. Moving on, we next came to the village of Castellane, well known in the area as a centre for rock climbing and absailing. The village is situated beneath an enormous, sheer-sided rock, perched on the very top of which is a small chapel. Our guide book told us that it was possible to access this chapel on foot which, gazing upwards, we found hard to believe. But, by following directions on a signpost which led us to the back of the village, we did indeed come across a footpath which we followed all the way to the top of the rock. The views from up there were absolutely amazing everything down below was antsized - and the chapel (appropriately named Notre Dame du Roc) was a gem and so well

tended. Whoever looked after it would have been making their own mini pilgrimage on a regular basis to get up there and keep it all in such good condition.
"to each, their own") as we reached the harbour of Carro, a working fishing village with an excellent nature walk stretching in both directions along the coastline.
The Gorges du Verdon is, without doubt, one of the most dramatic landscapes we have ever driven through. Every twist and turn on the extremely narrow mountain roads opens up views of jawdropping wonder - towering rock faces with vast crevasses slicing down through them to the lakes way down below. You just have to hope and pray that you don't meet someone coming the other way no laybys up here! Fortunately, we appeared to be the only people on the road. Back down on terra firma, and with my heart back in its rightful place and not in my mouth, we passed some of the famous lavender fields, the produce of which probably finds its way to the perfumeries of Grasse. Despite me telling him that Brigitte and Roger wouldn't be there, my husband insisted that the next port of call be St. Tropez, where he hoped to see a bit of the glitz and glamour for which it is known. Boy, was he disappointed! It was pouring with rain, no-one was about and, as he wasn't prepared to pay fourteen euros to park on a dismal bit of tarmac on the quay side, he put his foot down and we went on. As we continued along the coast I couldn't help but reflect that these clipped and manicured resorts of the Cote d'Azur, which all started out as fishing villages, are largely soulless, superficial places whose main objective is to relieve you of as much money as possible. Such a contrast to the inland villages we had been through who had, at least, maintained their integrity. I stopped moaning as we drove through Marseille and its romantic old port with its connotations of roguish sailors, absinthe and Gitanes! The influence of North Africa was everywhere- in the shops and people on the streets which gave it an exotic feeling of "otherness". A little way west and I took back nearly all I had said before about the coast (and returned to my basic philosophy of
The next leg of the journey saw us skirting the eastern Camargue and passing beautiful Arles, before heading on down towards the border. The frontier towns of Le Perthus in France and La Jonquera in Spain are packed full of people who come on coach trips to trawl the hundreds of shops, which appear mainly to be selling booze, fags and fake sportswear, or offering to tattoo you - a service which appeared to have been taken up by many. Just like Newquay, only sunnier! A lost fuel cap then had us heading inland to a motorhome dealer. Not on the planned route, but a blessing in disguise as we found the pleasant and friendly village of Navares, with an overnight stop near a small river and lake. Symbols in the streets tell you that this is yet another place on the Camino de Santiago. Things got even better the next day as we realised that we were quite close to Montserrat and its monastery dedicated to the Black Madonna. An opportunity not to be missed. The road took us up and around until we reached the top of the very high peak on which the monastery is built. You can also reach it by cable car or rack railway. Luckily, we arrived fairly early in the day and so were able to have a relaxed look around. Any later and we would have been swallowed up by the very many coach and school parties arriving from Barcelona and thereabouts. The monastery itself is aweinspiring, and in the complex which surrounds it is a museum housing works by Picasso, Dali, Degas, Monet, Caravaggio etc.. There was also a bizarre modern art installation called "Lamentations" situated in a black room and containing, amongst other items, huge chiming glass bells and a giant rosary made from skulls!

Then back down through the Ebro valley, but this time in rain and thick mist, which only added to the
drama of the landscape. This inland detour was infinitely preferable to negotiating the trafficclogged and polluted periphery around Barcelona, and we just hope that we can find it again in the future. On to Peniscola, where we knew that there were several campsites offering very cheap overnight rates in the off-season. We took the opportunity this time of walking down to the Casco Antiguo - quite a distance, but worth it to visit the interesting old town of this resort. After Peniscola we found ourselves going over old ground until we once again arrived at Almerimar - worth mentioning because a corner of the beach had been cordoned off in order to care for a baby dolphin, which had been rescued from further along the coast, and who was being watched 24 hours a day by a very dedicated team of environmental volunteers, with a view to eventually releasing it back into the open sea. Our final stretch along the coast was on a glorious morning, with the sun sparkling on the sea - always a welcome sight - and with a glimpse of the Sierra Nevada with a light dusting of snow as we passed Motril. Before long we were once heading up the familiar mountain road, and then dipping down again into our wonderful village of Archez with the prospect of the weeks ahead - walking, meeting up with friends, more walking- and just enjoying life. And so, with tyres and teeth intact, another journey completed. A journey which, I have to say, I finished in a completely different frame of mind from when we had left the village earlier in the year. It doesn't matter how many times we do this trip through Spain and France, there will always be something new to see or experience. We'll never do it all, and you never know what is around the next corner, which is what makes it so interesting. Looking forward to the next adventure already! Jan Rowlands

YOTAMOTTOLENGHI'S SWEET CORN CHOWDER WITH SPICY BUTTER
T
his recipe is by my favourite chef YotamOttolenghi and the first I ever cooked by him. This rich, tasty and relatively easy recipe was enough to get me hooked on his cooking. It is an ideal dinner party starter and can be made a day in advance. YotamOttolenghi is a chef and restaurant owner and has written 3 best-selling cookbooks including Plenty and the latest book Jerusalem .

Ingredients 1 large leek, cut along its centre and then cut into roughly 1cm squares ¾ tsp fresh thyme leaves 3 bay leaves 1 tbsp olive oil 30g butter 2 celery sticks, cut into 1cm slices 2 medium waxy potatoes (220g in total), peeled and cut into 1cm dice 500ml good quality vegetable stock 4 fresh corn cobs, corn shaved off (I use 3 x 150g tins of sweetcorn) 300ml milk 20g fresh coriander leaves, very
Remove the bay leaves from the pan and add the sweet corn (having drained the liquid if using tinned) and mix well. Transfer half of the soup to another pan and using a hand blender, blend until smooth. Put the blended half of the soup back into the original pan, add the milk and mix well. Simmer for 3 minutes or so and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Remove the pan from the heat and put to one side. To make the spiced butter grind the coriander and cumin seeds with a pestle and mortar and dry fry in a frying pan for about 30 seconds. Add the butter, salt and the white pepper and stir until the butter has melted. Serve the soup into 4 bowls and drizzle over the spiced butter and sprinkle on the chopped coriander leaves.

BIKE HIRE IN VELEZ MALAGA Velez Malaga town hall will award a private firm the concession for bicycle hire soon. The idea has been put into action thanks to an agreement signed by the council with the Andalucian Energy Agency. The free service only lasted three months because there was not enough money for replacements and parts for the bicycles in use. Now the town hall has decided to put the bicycles into circulation again, with no cost to the municipality, but it will be managed by a private company. The councillor of Transport and Mobility, Francisco Natera, said that the plan to hire out 100 bicycles will start after Easter.
