Your your Community News ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER FOUNDATION CHAMPIONS HERITAGE AND FINE ART WITH GRANT TO WATTS GALLERY The Watts Gallery Trust will use their grant of £75,000 to restore the renowned arts and crafts masterpiece Watts Chapel. Promoting the appreciation of Victorian artist G F Watts and ceramic artist Mary Seton Watts, the trust promotes the Compton area as a centre for Victorian art and social history.
The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has awarded grants worth a total of £566,911 to 19 projects across the UK. The grants form part of the foundation’s active grant programme and support arts and culture projects that make a real and ongoing difference to people’s lives. This year’s recipients will also include a number of projects promoting the appreciation, preservation and conservation of heritage and fine arts. These include initiatives proposed by Watts Gallery Trust.
Preserving the unique artistic interiors of the chapel for future generations, the grant will contribute to the restoration of the chapel’s renowned gesso panels and return the chapel to its original purpose to serve the community for burial and memorial services. Providing invaluable conservation experience for students, the work will be undertaken by ten City & Guilds London School of Art students and graduates who will work under the guidance of leading expert, Patricia Jackson. This grant has been offered as a ‘challenge grant’, with Watts Gallery Trust working to match the donations in order to release the funding. www.wattsgallery.org.uk
SURREY WILDLIFE TRUST URGES MPS TO STAND UP FOR NATURE AS BREXIT LOOMS Surrey Wildlife Trust is calling on all MPs in Surrey to sign Greener UK’s Pledge for the Environment as Britain prepares to leave the EU – to date, only one MP in the county has done so. The Trust is among 13 ma jor environmental organisations which have united in a new Greener UK coalition, to persuade the Government to put the environment at the forefront of its plans for post Brexit Britain. The Trust’s Chief Executive, Nigel Davenport said: “The EU has provided a strong framework of wildlife protection and funding for environmental projects, which has reduced the speed of wildlife loss and begun to turn the tide of fortune for some species in Surrey. “The decision to leave the EU brings significant long-term risks for our
wildlife and environment. We’re calling on all of our MPs in the county to pledge to build a better future for our wildlife, wild places and for all of us. We strongly believe funding for environmentally friendly farming must be retained and developed further, and that legislation to protect wildlife should be strengthened, not weakened, in an independent UK.” EU laws have made a big impact on water quality in Surrey’s rivers and the air that we breathe. European protection means threatened species such as Nightjars, Dartford Warblers and Woodlarks have been given space to thrive; Chobham Common, Wisley and Ockham Common and Hankley Common are all safeguarded for their rare heathland habitats under European classification as Special Protection Areas for birds.
Ask your MP for stand up for wildlife in the county by signing Greener UK’s Pledge for the Environment at www.green-alliance.org.uk

GUILDFORD’S YVONNE ARNAUD THEATRE LAUNCHES ‘THE STORY PROJECT’ The Story Project is an exciting new initiative that aims to rekindle the love of storytelling across the area by capturing the imagination of young people and inspiring their creativity. Each month, the Yvonne Arnaud team will invite a different local nursery, school or charity to choose a story, which they will then work on before visiting that organisation to deliver an inventive, tailormade storytelling session. Head of Youth, Education and Community, Nick White explains: “We sat down and looked at the essence of what we do, and every piece of theatre starts with a great story - so we decided to run a project that
keeps the art of storytelling alive for the next generation. “It’s our way of engaging with some of the youngest and some of the oldest members of our community and promoting engagement and cohesive communication, both between the generations and within families.” The Story Project is already working with Guildford Borough Council’s Project Aspire team and King’s College, Guildford to develop theatre based on the lives of those who live in the Westborough area of Guildford. The first charity to participate in this community project was Shooting
Star Chase. Barbie Hibberd, Activities Coordinator at the charity’s Guildfordbased hospice, said: “The Story Project visited Christopher’s and performed a very special version of ‘Kipper’s Birthday’ for our supported children in aid of the hospice’s 15th birthday. It was a fabulous session, with lots of sensory and interactive activities – and the children simply loved it!” To be a part of The Story Project, simply submit your nomination by emailing education@yvonne-arnaud.co.uk with ‘The Story Project’ in the subject line and tell them why you think your chosen organisation deserves a visit from The Story Project.
INTERNET OF THINGS TECHNOLOGY STUDY COULD TRANSFORM LIVES FOR DEMENTIA SUFFERERS Fourteen hundred people are needed from across Surrey and North East Hampshire for a £5 million ground-breaking ‘Internet of Things’ technology study that could transform the lives of people with dementia. The study is part of an NHS drive to modernise healthcare for the benefit of older people with long term health problems. Called TIHM (Technology Integrated Health Management) for dementia, the study will help clinicians to remotely monitor the health and wellbeing of people with dementia so they can intervene earlier to help someone avoid a crisis and an unnecessary hospital stay. It is also hoped the study will relieve pressure on carers and help people with dementia to remain independent for longer. To take part in the study, a person must live in Surrey or NE Hampshire and have
a diagnosis of mild to moderate dementia and a carer who is willing to participate. Surrey and Borders Partnership is looking for 700 people with dementia and their carers to get involved. People receiving the technology will have their homes kitted out with noninvasive devices, such as sensors, apps and trackers. These will connect to each other via the ‘Internet of Things’ and work together to collect and analyse different pieces of information, that will be securely managed, about a person’s health and patterns of behaviour. Dr Ramin Nilforooshan, leading dementia specialist, said: “The technology is designed to alert us to any changes in behaviour or any changes in wellbeing that could signal someone is becoming unwell or that they are in trouble. For example, they may be developing a urinary tract or lower respiratory infection.
We could detect the early signs/symptoms of those infections and successfully treat them at home. “We know that people with dementia do not respond well to being in hospital – and that their symptoms can worsen in this environment so it is much better if we can treat them before they need to be admitted for acute care.” The Alzheimer’s Society, which is a partner in TIHM for dementia trial, is recruiting an army of 150 trained volunteers who will keep in regular touch with participants, offering them their support. 850,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia, an estimated 16,800 in Surrey, with that figure set to rise to 19,000 by 2020. ON THE GO ... CRAZY BEAN CAFÉ A new café offering fresh vegan food, Crazy Bean Café is a gift to both the converted and the curious… For anyone looking for the pure joys of real vegan cooking in Surrey, choices, sadly, are slim. I don’t decry this as someone who ascribes to a diet free from animal products – you could no more make me give up bacon than you could ask me to swim the English Channel in a suit of chainmail. But I do consider myself among many millions of people who are steadily growing in awareness of the heavy price of intensive animal agriculture, paid not only by the animals, but by the environment also. It may be because of this creeping anxiety about the cost of what we eat and how we produce it that veganism, or at least vegetarianism, has gone from a perception of a fringe hippy fad to a mainstream, sustainable answer to a looming problem that is really starting to make itself felt. Vegans will preach -rightly- to the unconverted that veganism is not only super good for you but utterly delicious too, but for those not inclined to explore it in their own kitchens, where does that leave us in Surrey for places to experience this purest of cuisines? Which brings me back to the dearth of dedicated vegan choices in the county when it comes to eating out. But it also brings
us, fortunately, to the Crazy Bean Café in charming little Great Bookham. Opened in September 2016 by entrepreneur Krissi Sanft with Head Chef Chris Skelton, the Crazy Bean Café has been a hit among locals and drawn vegan bloggers from far afield. That could be down to many factors, among them Krissi’s desire, she tells me later, to “open a normal café, not a hipster café.” Which would be easy enough to do in the sleepy village of Bookham, you’d assume, but then the café’s real ace-in-the hole must be Chef Skelton’s classical training and the team’s intention to infuse their vegan dishes with “flavours people recognise.” That could mean a vegan lasagne that tastes like… I want to say ‘real’ lasagne, but that feels wrong and you know what I mean, or a Beef Bourguignon swapped out with lentils that still has all the deep, savoury richness of its classic origins. The menu on our visit was, like the café itself, small and to the point (‘crazy’ doesn’t exactly manifest in the smart, minimalist décor) but that only helps focus the appetite on a concise range of tantalising options. With lunch on our mind, we began with a couple of wraps. One was a roast veggie wrap, stuffed with juicy-sweet and tender peppers, courgettes, onions and aubergine with a luscious homemade houmous that went heavy on the lemon, balanced with a sweet chilli sauce; all a lovely, fresh whack of flavours and textures. A sticky BBQ wrap, however, was more of a revelation that any humble tortilla wrap has a right to be, stuffed as it was with golden, crispy tofu given a little Southern Fried love and
By Rich Lee
that smoky sauce: simply a dead-on punt at a fried chicken wrap, and an expression of the café’s mantra of ‘recognisable flavours’. A wild mushroom tagliatelle, loaded with soy cream and parmesan, was as rich and tasty a bowl of carbs as you could wish for, with great nuggets of fragrant, nutty mushrooms. More of that unctuous crispy tofu arrived crowning a bowl of ramen soup, shredded vegetables and fat noodles swimming in a gorgeous, aromatic broth, with a deep, clean spicy heat. It all felt and ate like a glorious tease, and a sign that when this little café, and one of Surrey’s only vegan dining spots, is done luring in both committed vegans and the curious, there might be a world of eyeopening dishes up their sleeve just waiting to be discovered. You never know: this humble café with fresh ideas could just be the start of something in Surrey.

ON THE GO ... PRIMAL ROOST Seeking sustenance of a more primal nature, we head to a coffee shop and pantry in Bagshot that’s like nothing else in Surrey… It’s been called the Caveman diet, Palaeolithic and Primal, but whatever you call it, the appeal of ‘primal’ eating has grown significantly in recent years. It’s even managed to shake off the kind of label ascribed to so many here-today gone-tomorrow diets - namely ‘fads’thanks to its common-sense grounding in the kind of nutrition our bodies actually require, not just what they’ve become accustomed to with modern diets. And for three friends from Bagshot, the simple pleasures and extraordinary benefits of a life freed from processed foods and stultifying grains were too good not to share. That’s what led Jody Diton, Leisa Moss and Kirstie Prince to dream up the idea of Primal Roost, a café oasis not only for fellow paleo travellers but for people curious about the lifestyle. “We’ve all
By Rich Lee
been paleo or primal for a few years, for various reasons,” says Jody. “But it was only by chatting that we realised we were all following the same kind of lifestyle. So, we became our own little network, sharing recipes, ideas and dinner parties and such. Then we had the idea to do something like a café with this paleo concept.”
Fresh food here is unfussy yet well-thought through, designed to satisfy any appetite and provide an immediate, nutritious lift. On our visit, we grabbed a wrap – a grain-free tortilla – stuffed with delicious salty gammon and layered with crisp leaves, tangy gherkins and a subtle Dijon dressing, with a punchy, fresh coleslaw.
The café they opened in July 2015 is a bright, modern place that blurs that trendy line between chic and upcycled with ease. The heady aroma of specialist organic coffee from Surrey coffee roasters Beanberry hits you immediately, followed by the sight of a counter festooned with all kinds of freshly made goodies including salads, cakes, muffins and brownies.
The ‘Stew of the Day’ turned out to be a comforting beef Bolognese with the pasta swapped out for courgette, spiralised into happy, fresh tendrils that had just the right al dente firmness. I love my pasta but there was everything to love about this simple, hearty twist on a family favourite.
As a pantry, Roost’s neat scaffold and timber shelves hold a dizzying variety of health foods with prominent organic, paleo and gluten-free brands such as Clearspring, Infinity Foods and Gnaw on Nature, offering store cupboard essentials like seeds, flours, nuts and delicious treats like natural chocolate and fruit bars. Naturally, there isn’t a shred of processed sugar or cereal grain to be found at Primal Roost, but the ladies’ goal was always to make their shop a place to transition easily into a healthier lifestyle.
Those with a sweet tooth aren’t let down at all at Primal Roost; from amongst the treats on the countertop we tucked into a dreamy salted caramel chocolate cupcake and a delicately spiced bundt cake, neither betraying any hint or distinction of unprocessed flours or sugars that might have been derived from coconut or almond, just super moist and tasty, especially when paired with a soothing matcha mint latte or a robust flat white. Primal Roost’s concept and commitment to healthy living is worn proudly on its sleeve, in the food, its goods and in dozens of books on the subject among the
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Food-and-Drink
shelves, but in no way smothers what is simply a warm, friendly and smart place to come for great coffee and a bite to eat. For the curious, the staff are only too happy to expound on the benefits of paleo lifestyle and the shop runs regular events – such as a Detox January – to spread the good word. Even the English Rugby Squad are frequently drawn here from their training ground at Pennyhill Park, so when a café serves food that effortlessly complements the rigidly engineered diets of these hungry titans, you know it has to be special.

FOODIES FEATURE LIDGATES BUTCHERS, ADDLESTONE Lidgates is a west London institution that’s now arrived in Surrey, thanks to a partnership with the Crockford Bridge Farm Shop. Founded in 1850, the family butchers are now run by Danny Lidgate, the fifth generation of the Lidgates to do so. The firm were champions of provenance long before the current trend for authenticity. Lidgates’ meats include grass fed beef from Judith Freane, Wagyu beef from Earl Stonham and own-made beef bourguignon pies. It’s not just beef award winning Master butcher Danny knows but pork, game lamb and poultry too. Try Lidgates’ Victoria and Albert sausages made using fresh free-range pork, mustard and horseradish or their Old English sausages, made using a Victorian recipe that combines pork with its firm friend sage and herbs and other spices. Revered by food critics and restauranteurs alike, Lidgates is synonymous with quality meat produce. From beautifully cut and trimmed joints to minced meat and rolled meat enhanced with flavourings and ready for you to cook at home, Lidgates offer customers huge choice. Experience the refined flavour of periperi – fresh poussin split, laid flat and prepared in homemade marinade. Crown the dining table with a saddle of lamb filled and coated with pesto sauce and pine nut decoration; this centrepiece is sure to impress all who are invited to sup at your side. Much of their fare is available online, but you must pay a visit if only to appreciate the generations of skill and service that make Lidgates a fantastic addition to Crockford Bridge Farm and to Surrey!

Scorchers Reached New Heights in 2016
Storm Welcome Kiwi Coach to UK
The opening months of the 2016/17 British Basketball League season have been a mix of cruel and kind to Guildford’s professional basketball team, but the new look Surrey Scorchers outfit have certainly made the most of their chances to show the league that they are back to their best!
Surrey Storm Netball have this month welcomed their brand new Director of Netball, Tania Hoffman to England for the first time.
Recent seasons have been tough for the county’s basketball franchise, with both players and coaches coming in and out on an almost monthly basis while the club, and Head Coach Creon Raftopoulos, found stability in its roster. At the start of the campaign back in September, nobody would have expected the side to be sitting on the edge of the BBL Play-Off places, with a Cup semi-final to their name (the club’s first since 2009). Incredible individual performances from US imports Quincy Taylor and Chaz Rollins plus Brit Will Neighbour, who will be looking for international selection this summer, have really set the side alight this year! Hundreds of fans from across the community head to the Sports Park to cheer on the boys, who say that the fans really are key to their performances which are improving every single time they step out on court. Add in the recent announcement that BBC Sport will broadcast one live game every week on their website, red button and connected TV platforms, and it’s clear to see that basketball is going from strength to strength in the UK, taking our very own Surrey Scorchers with it!
Hoffman, whose signing was announced in September, will lead a new look Storm side during the 2017 Vitality Netball Superleague season as they look to make it a hat trick of back-to-back championship titles. Having now spent a few weeks with the squad, Tania said: “This is a new team with lots of young players but they are eager to learn and they really want to come together as a team before the season starts. Success for them will be about how they progress and go forward together as a team. Success will be bigger than just winning games.” Storm kick off their 2017 season on Saturday 18th February when they host Severn Stars at Surrey Sports Park. Tickets for all home games, including the showpiece fixture Netball London Live in the capital, are on sale at surreystormnetball.co.uk.
Tickets for Scorchers New Year fixtures are on sale now at surreyscorchers.co.uk.
Warm Return for Rio Hero Badminton fans from across Surrey were on hand in November to welcome an Olympic hero back to Surrey Sports Park, as Rio 2016 bronze medal winner and Surrey Smashers captain Chris Langridge returned to AJ Bell National Badminton League action. The Leatherhead-born hero defied the odds in Brazil to secure Team GB’s first medal in the sport since 2004 alongside Marcus Ellis in the Men’s Doubles. Smashers fans were able to get up close and personal with Chris and his Olympic medal at the Sports
Park in November, as Langridge led out his Surrey side to their first match-night win of the 2016/17 season. The night also saw fellow Olympians Line Kjaersfeldt, Nina Vislova and Chris and Gabby Adcock hit the court, as Smashers took a 3-2 win over University of Nottingham. Badminton fans will have one more chance to watch Langridge in the county this season when his side host Team Derby on Monday 9th January. Tickets are on sale now at surreysmashers.co.uk.
Kick off your 2017 resolutions at Surrey Sports Park It’s time to brush aside those mince pies and turkey dinners and get your whole lifestyle in shape for the New Year. With a whole range of sports facilities, including a state of the art gym, Olympic sized swimming pool and badminton, tennis and squash courts galore, there really is something for everyone at Surrey Sports Park. But there is more to the place than just opportunities to exercise. You can also get advice on your lifestyle as a whole
including diet, sleep, stress, weight management and more, so you can get your mind, body and soul in shape, all under the same roof. Upholstery With FoOd Sarah Louise Dix give it a go
By Chloe Kearns If you’re looking for lovely soft furnishings in Surrey, there are plenty of places to pick up stylish mass produced pieces- but if it’s something a little different you’re after, a little more a a ‘you,’ T will you do it Louise visit to Sarah Dix is sure to inspire and could even equip you with a skill for life if you take up one of her upholstery courses. We went along to her studio in Godalming to find out more...
BReaKinG A H Bi
Sarah’s studio is an eclectic place, full of her current projects- a traditional arm chair she’s upholstering for an older gentleman; a funky floral creation with silver leather piping for a young woman in her 20’s; even a sofa salvaged from a flooded property that is being given new life- with velvet trimmings no less. There are all sorts of chairs here spanning the decades, for all sorts of people in all sorts of homes. On the walls, there are even mounted embroidery hoops of forgotten vintage fabrics saved from chairs long ago. Sarah originally studied fashion design before becoming a designer, maker and traditional upholsterer. Her signature piece, the Corset Chair, is the perfect example of how original vintage clothing and tailoring techniques influence her work. She enjoys nothing more than being able to help her clients to create truly unique, flamboyant furniture, their own little piece of history to endure in their homes. If you thought upholstery was just about covering something in fabric, you’d be wrong- it’s far more exciting and involved
than that! As well as producing her own bespoke creations and restoring pieces for customers, Sarah teaches a number of upholstery courses where she shares her passion for this traditional craft.

“You can upholster anything!” explains Sarah, gesturing at a stool made from a tree stump, made to look like a toadstool. ‘Right,’ I thought- ‘I definitely want to learn how to do THAT.’ The skills she teaches on her courses, from tacking hessian to a frame, bridal ties new you new yearpacking with fibres, knitting them together and pulling fabric evenly over the seat can be transferred across projects, allowing you produce other pieces of your own at home, armed with expert know-how. Plenty of people enjoy attending Sarah’s courses, from couples and groups of friends wanting to spend quality time together, to individuals wanting to learn something new.

Today Sarah would teach us to upholster a footstool with a drop-in seat. “I feel a Christmas present coming on,” joked participant Max Mealey, who loves finding new crafts to try. First things first, we cut our hessian to size and attached it to the flat drop in board using a hammer and temporary tacks. Sarah showed us how to use the magnetic end of the hammer to pick up the tack and then tap it into place. Approximately one in four of my taps hit the intended target, but we certainly got better throughout the day. “I hope no one’s got a hangover!” jested Sarah. “This is great for getting your frustration out,” noted Claire Bogle, another participant, who’s eventually hoping to upholster a sprung chair. There was a lovely atmosphere in Sarah’s studio: convivial, chatty and helpful, with everyone exchanging tips and complements for jobs well done. At each stage of the process, Sarah clearly demonstrated and explained the task and provided assistance when needed. As we worked, she told us about different projects she has worked on, such as commissions
for hotels or interesting finds, like the letter to the next upholster from their predecessor, contained within a Victorian chair someone brought to her studio. With each round of pulling and covering, our tacking technique improved and by four o’clock, six budding upholsterers were able to put their feet up on six fabulous footstools. If you want to be inspired by a contemporary artist to transform your home, a trip to Sarah Louise Dix’s studio will do it; she’ll help you to create your own space by designing and creating functional items that go beyond the purely decorative to become stylish essentials. Join Sarah in her studio for an upholstery experience of your own, with a beginners one day footstool workshop on a Saturday between 09.30-16.30. If you’ve tried upholstery before and are looking to develop your skills, why not try the intermediate one day course to work on a sprung dining chair on a Saturday between 09.30-18.30? Once you’ve truly fallen in love with the fabulous fun that is upholstering, attend a ten-week course with Sarah to develop your own masterpiece and you’ll never look back! start your fitness plan It may be cliché but the symbolism of a new year and a fresh start still has the power to motivate many of us seeking a healthier lifestyle. But it’s too easy to falter at the starting line without a clear plan and goals. Here, Natalie Silvester from Guildford and London-based personal training providers, More Than Muscle, offers her advice on how to train right in 2017… So, you’re here again, its January and you’re about to embark on your annual health and fitness quest. But have you thought about where you went wrong last time? Consider these simple steps to keep your health and fitness kicking all year long.
Goals: Start by writing down the reasons behind your new health and fitness regime. From this, think of where you want to be. How that will make you feel when you achieve this. Add a time frame to this goal and it suddenly becomes a task. Start by looking long-term i.e. 6 months+ you will then find it easier and more realistic to break down your goal into smaller and more achievable chunks. Write all your mini milestones down somewhere you can see them every day.
Preferences: Classes/gym/PT: There are many ways you can begin with working out and it simply boils down to preference. If confidence is an issue, I would suggest starting with a friend. Gym classes are a great place to start to, many have a fun and energetic atmosphere and are aimed at all fitness levels. Online fitness programs and e-books are another route you can take if you’re selfdisciplined and have some general gym knowledge. Personal Training is a tailored and structured service specific to you and only you.
Other Activities: It’s not all about the gym. Re-join your local sports team, sign-up to a charity race or start attending a walking/running club. What often stops people in their tracks when heading for their goals is boredom. Enjoy the journey and enjoy what your body can do.
Sleep: Are you getting enough sleep? 6-8 hours of unbroken sleep is the recommendation. Having this amount of rest per night will give your body time to repair ahead of a fresh and new day! If you don’t find it easy to fall asleep then there are a few things you can do to improve this. Try not to consume any caffeine a minimum of 6 hours before bedtime. Shining a glowing blue light into the retina of your eye isn’t the best form of relaxation so try reading or listening to an audiobook before bed instead of looking at your phone or tablet.
Hydration: Around 2-3 litres of water per day will do it. If you feel thirsty, chances are you’re
already dehydrated and if 2 litres of water sounds like an awful lot to you, then chances are you’re probably not drinking enough. Start by filling up a 2-litre bottle with water and sip this throughout the day. Staying hydrated gives a healthy glow to your skin, keeps hunger at bay, prevents headaches and keeps your digestive system regular.
Nutrition: This is where it tends to go wrong. Begin with eating natural and whole foods that you enjoy and don’t restrict yourself. Food is there to nourish your body and shouldn’t be used as your weapon of selfdestruction. Keep things exciting by trying new foods and recipes.
Weigh yourself properly: People tend to shy away from the scales, but there really is no need to. Weighing yourself every day teaches you about your body and how it reacts to different foods or activity levels. Water intake, menstrual cycle, food intake and stress can all play havoc with the scales. So, if you’re going to weigh yourself do so on the same scales (morning preferably) every day and then calculate an average over that week.
Log your progress: Whether your goal is to improve yourself mentally of physically it’s important to log your progress. Personally, keeping a diary works for me but you can also use your phone to create notes, take pictures or record short voice memos. Achievements are motivating to see and great to look back on, you’ll never get bored of seeing results.
More Than Muscle provide elite personal training in a variety of packages to suit you. They operate out of Activzone Gym at Guildford College. www.morethanmuscle.co.uk

School of Speed:Wellfast
Keen to reignite her love of running after an injury, our photographer Fi Digby-Jones sought expert help from coach Dr Margot Wells…
away and back towards her so she could analyse my alignment. It appears, and I quote: “my legs are hanging on by a thread”, not the sort of statement I was expecting, but then no one has scrutinised the way I walk before. No matter, I’ve got a thick skin, and besides, Margot said she would have that sorted by the end of the session.
I’ve always enjoyed running, so when I injured my knee shortly before the inaugural Surrey Half Marathon in 2014, I felt huge frustration and disappointment at not being able to compete.
Margot then coached me through a series of strengthening exercises using a resistance band, which, on the face of it, seemed quite simple, yet these were clearly having an effect as each time Margot asked me to take a little run, I was running faster and faster each time, without noticing any extra effort on my part. My knee injury also wasn’t causing me any pain, but then again, it doesn’t tend to unless I try to run over long
My injury was then exacerbated by a pathetic tumble on the slopes during my last snowboarding holiday, so I was only too eager to engage in a 1-to-1 with Dr Margot Wells of Wellfast. My only reservation being that I had to be in front of the camera, instead of behind it where I feel more comfortable, but hey, at least you now know what I look like! Wellfast was founded on Margot’s passion for speed and power, and as a former international sprinter, she well knows the joy of running and is keen that everyone should feel the same. Margot not only helped her husband, Alan Wells M. B. E. win the Olympic 100m gold medal in 1980, she has also worked with many professional rugby players. After an initial discussion to ascertain where my injury was, what had caused it, and how long it had been since I’d last ran, Margot simply asked me to walk
distances, or push myself too fast, so was keen to find out if I could build up to the distances, and achieve, or better still, improve on the times I was accomplishing before my knee started to give up on me. To this end, Margot emailed me the exercises I had performed during the session and told me to do these daily for a week instead of my normal workouts, then go for a run and report back to her. At the time of going to print, I was yet to go for this run so check our website for the results and who knows, with Margot’s confident advice to guide me, perhaps I’ll be able to compete in this year’s Surrey Half Marathon!

The Guide 2 SURREY’S SUFFERFESTS There are those for whom a full or half marathon feels no more challenging than a brisk walk in the park. Not for them the gentle padding of a run-of-the-mill 10k; a real challenge consists of pushing themselves over obstacles both man-made and wild, through lashing wind, rain and mud. Lots of mud. The rise of the ‘Sufferfest’ over the last few years caters for every extreme fitness challenger, and Surrey’s not short of opportunities to break yourself in new and ‘fun’ ways…

The Maverick Original Trail
test dummy: brutal run This month, Tayler Willson takes on his final Test Dummy for the Guide 2 Surrey. Did you think we’d go easy on him? Brutal (adjective)
- savagely violent - unpleasant or harsh - direct and without attempting to disguise unpleasantness Whatever way you look at the word brutal, it’s not very nice. Even paired with a positive word it changes its entire meaning, a brutal hug, for example, or a brutal kiss. Neither of which are too appealing. But as I found myself 5-kilometres into a Brutal Run, I’d have happily taken a week-full of brutal hugs and kisses instead. Earlier, I’d force-fed myself a few bananas and sank almost three litres of water in the short journey to the run, just outside Aldershot. Upon arrival at the meeting point - the friend that drove me was also running - we began to warm up in what was a bitterly cold morning.
6th May
We cautiously set off, keeping eyes on the more experienced runners for tips. I wasn’t going to be that guy that speeds ahead only to be mocked and ridiculed further down the line, no, we’d keep our distance and observe from a far. After a few small hills, some rough terrain and a few obstacles too, we came to a mud swamp. Thigh-deep in gloopy, brown sludge, we desperately tried to keep up with the pace-setters, struggling for breath and sweating solids.
Polseden Lacey, normally a haven of quiet and beautiful reflection is also home to the Maverick Race Original Series race. The stunning grounds offer up some incredible trails. There are 3 routes to choose from so there’s something for everyone, from the lowly beginner to the adrenaline crazed psycho that you are. Check the World Wide Web for the deets.
By the fifth kilometre, I was suffering bad and needed to re-stretch. Cramp was coming, sure, but not quite yet. I’d do what I could to delay it. The hills were proving to be quite tricky, so changing my tactics was a must and I immediately changed how I’d tackle the big, slopey gits: walk up, nice, run down, sorted. The sweet spot. Cramp averted.

You can expect to run, climb, and crawl through 60+ challenging obstacles all the while being covered in glorious mud. To register interest email

Cramp duly arrived about 30 seconds later and I fell to the floor in an embarrassing heap of pain, but I continued. With just over two kilometres remaining, I was really beginning to struggle. We were passing walkers and the temptation to join them almost proved too much, but with the end in sight and my nose twitching at the smell of victory, I wasn’t going to start slacking now. With my chum by my side, we held hands and raised our arms aloft as the crowd, including our family and loved ones, screamed and roared our names. Like the two, weak Brownlee brothers, arm-in-arm we fell across the finish line and we had conquered. We were victorious. As it happens, my 1 hour 58 minute time was actually really quite slow. But my aim was to finish and that’s what I did. The run lived up to its brutal name. It was unpleasant and harsh, although not savagely violent. Were I to run again, the preparation would be much better. But I’ll need some Brutal rest first. Brutal Run and other events are organised by AAT Events. Visit them at www.aat-events.com

TEST DUMMY: Punk Rock Yoga Lydia Stockbridge discovers a class where punk’s ying to yoga’s yang combine to create a yoga experience like no other... I have been a fair-weather yogi since practitioner Jo Smith first started Punk Rock Yoga classes at The Boileroom in Guildford back in September 2015. However, a busy schedule had got in the way of my zen aspirations. I was looking forward to getting back into the swing of things with the new weekly evening
classes, and a long hour (75minutes to be exact) to have some quality ‘me’ time. The philosophy marrying Punk Rock to Dru Yoga is a simple one. Founded in 2003 by practitioner Kimberlee Jensen Stidl: to scrub out the elitism and make yoga accessible to anyone regardless of age, background, race, or gender.
and nod to each other as we spread out and settle in.
In Jo’s own manifesto on her website (www.badjuju.eu) she is ‘driven by the desire to make yoga more accessible and inclusive within the community, regardless of whether you’re ‘punk’ or not’.
It had been a while since the last session for all of us so this was very much about easing back into the swing of things. Jo talks us through each posture and sequence and its impact on our bodies. We limber up first with some aerobic movements to get the blood pumping and music from The Menzingers and Thrice to get the adrenalin flowing. One of my favourite things about these classes is discovering new music through Jo’s Spotify playlists, which get shared
This is evident from the get-go as we file in, mats tucked under our arms. Jo knows all the regulars on a first-name basis: asking how holidays were or how the new job’s going – it’s friendly and we all smile
The Eagle (Garudasana) is our featured pose of the evening; followed by the meditative Earth sequence, and revisiting an old favourite of mine, the three Warrior poses.
NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

after each session online, along with diagrams for each posture. The three Warrior poses channel strength and determination – which is plain to see on all of our now-glistening faces around the room. There’s a silently furious collective will to keep our balance as we take it up from the easier posture one, and move our hips and outstretched arms round to the side, placing all of our weight on one leg in a ‘Superman’ style third pose.
need to take a break or stick to simpler sequences. Jo walks through the room to check on the position of our feet and make adjustments and shout words of encouragement. The Eagle pose is to give clarity, which all flows back into our central focus on finding balance and feeling grounded. The Eagle again has three stages ranging in difficulty: we choose how hard we want to work it.
“There’s a silently furious collective will to keep our balance”
The incessant drum rolls and punk rock riffs of War on Women and Marmozets help me to focus and draw on my energy to power through – although I found myself wobbling no matter how hard I try to keep composed. We then flow through into a tree pose, before repeating the sequence on the other side. Chairs were put out for us to lean on – It’s reassuring there’s no judgement if we
After taking a short break, we head into the final and my second favourite part of the session – meditation. We lie back and listen to Mogwai as Jo talks us through slowly releasing tension in our muscles from our toes up to our shoulders, focusing on our breath with soft bellies slowly breathing in and out. As we first moved into a semi-circle for our first meditation sequence; I’d had
the smug feeling that I’d really pushed myself and will have earned the pizza I’d be having for dinner later; until the newcomer to our group, a middle-aged lady who had been slogging away at the back came to sit down. “Excuse me everyone, but my leg’s giving me gyp, I’m going to have to take it off.’ And without further ado she removed her prosthetic lower right leg to get comfy. It was immediately clear: the real, true challenger here was the one-legged woman sitting to my left who had been balancing on one leg, arms outstretched in the fiercest Warrior pose in the room that night. If that’s not punk, I don’t know what is.

Here are just some activities in Surrey that bring great health benefits with an extra helping of sociability and fun:

Y
ou may have seen a certain word mentioned multiple times recently in home and lifestyle articles, however you pronounce it, Hygge (Hue-gah) is here.
‘Hygge’, is the Danish concept that’s taking hold across the UK, but what is Hyyge? Well besides Sofa Workshop’s amazingly comfortable new sofa, it’s one of those words where we struggle for a literal translation – think déjà vu or doppelgänger. In essence, it’s a cosy night in by the fire or sharing a hot chocolate with friends: the calm comfort and warmth of life’s simple pleasures. Hygge sums up the mantra of creating a warm, convivial atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life.
welcome designs we reckon you’ll have difficulty keeping them to yourself!
Embrace the essence of Hygge with their NEW Hygge sofa, online now and available in store soon. Their Hygge seating options span the size range so you’re sure to find the perfect fit for your space, whether it’s a cosy single seater Hygge chair for curling up with the cat and a good book or an extra-large Hygee sofa- to read the whole family a story!
Our House
To capture this Danish essence, there’s really no hidden secret and we like to think that we Brits have been mastering it for almost as long as the Danes at Sofa Workshop. It’s the turning over of a pillow on a Sunday morning, getting back home after a cold, crisp walk to a roast with family and friends, one more glass of red in the pub or that 4pm cuppa...(just don’t forget the biscuits). Making your home a place of warmth and comfort is about as Hygge as it gets and with their new range of feather-filled, relaxed and ready-to-
Our House Our House
Their Hygge sofas are all handmade in our British workshops and every hardwood frame comes with a 25-year guarantee. The arms can be removed for ease of access and if the solid Beech feet aren’t your perfect choice, you can choose from plenty of other options. We think you’ll be impressed with the fabrics they’ve selected. Perhaps you’ll love the textured chevron weave of Berwick petrol in a palette of soft contemporary tones, or maybe the beautiful, subtle cotton-linen blend, dual weave texture of Palm in peppermint is more your style. Choose up to six fabric swatches for a closer look and they’ll send them to you ASAP. If you can’t find quite the one from Galloway, Berwick, Palm or Hatter, explore their additional 1000+ fabrics to find your perfect choice and they’ll help you make your Hygge dream a reality.

Fire Gallery:
Bringing Hygge Home Hygge is... well, what is hygge exactly? The Fire Gallery in Chertsey’s Jasemin Fetton unwraps it for us…
GGGGGGGG
T
ranslating meanings from one language to another is sometimes not straightforward, or even possible, hence why we use words such as “Zeitgeist” and “Schadenfreude…” But “hygge” is everywhere these days: there is the Hygge Café in Berlin serving beetroot avocado sandwiches, the interior design boutique “Hyggelig” in France and of course, our very own Morsø Firegallery in the heart of Surrey, making sure you get your dose of hygge when you sit in front of one of their Danish stoves. According to the Danish American writer Tove Maren Stakkestad, “hygge was never meant to be translated, it was meant to be felt.” Amongst other things, hygge has been described as a recipe for happiness, cosiness, quality time and taking pleasure in the ordinary every day. Looking around, we do not seem to have time to make every day things more meaningful; we are busy commuting and paying bills instead of enjoying our children, family and friends. It may not come as a surprise to you that whilst the UK is the 5th largest national economy, we are actually ranked 23 on the World Happiness Report which is commissioned by the UN to get a proper measure of social progress. The UK is behind countries such as Iceland, Isreal, Puerto Rico and Mexico, to name just a few of the 22 who are happier than us. How do the Danes fare in the ranking of the Happiness Report? Number one. Why? Hygge. So, the heart-warming lesson from Denmark is that money is not everything, but getting families and friends together for a meal is. Lighting candles and putting your MORSO stove on is. Helping your 10 year-old to build his LEGO Star Wars Millenium Falcon is.
62
Londoner Helen Russell ended up living in Denmark’s rural Jutland and discovered that Denmark is indeed the happiest place on earth. In her book, “The year of living Danishly,” (published by Icon books) Helen uncovers the formula for Danish happiness. In his book, “The little book of Hygge,” (published by Penguin Life) Meik Wiking explains that hygge is about atmosphere and experiences rather than about things. The Danes are obsessed with fire, be it candles, lamps or wood burning stoves – fire and light is essential to get that hygge feeling of being warm, cosy and relaxed. We at the Fire Gallery in Surrey could not agree more. Our aim is to help people to create hygge in their homes as this is what really counts in life; taking some time out to create happy memories in front of a lovely wood burning stove. Let us help you stoke up hygge in your home.
