your Community News THE ACADEMY OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC LEASES ICONIC ARTS VENUE THE ELECTRIC THEATRE It’s finally official: Following the twists and turns of a bidding process that began in 2015, the new leaseholders of the Electric Theatre in Guildford have formally taken the reins of the iconic building. The Academy of Contemporary Music has signed a 20-year lease on the building which was previously under the management of Guildford Borough Council. The Theatre’s existing staff have transferred to ACM as part of the move, and ACM say they are looking forward to working with them and the local community to deliver a stream of rich arts programming over the months and years ahead, pledging to run The Electric as a community arts venue for the people of Guildford and the wider area on a not-for-profit basis. Lead Councillor for Social Welfare, Heritage and the Arts, Cllr Nikki Nelson-Smith said: “We are pleased

to announce that the Academy of Contemporary Music has signed the lease to operate The Electric Theatre for the next 20 years, securing the future of the venue. This is a positive step forward for the theatre. It will be maintained as a performing arts venue with community use – our key aim throughout the whole of this process.” “We have really enjoyed working with Guildford Borough Council over these last months,” says Oliver Sussat, Director at ACM, “learning more about The Electric Theatre, its employees, hirers, community groups and customers as we did so. With the lease now signed, we are very much focused on working with all of these people to bring and invite fresh ideas, programming and projects to the space.” In the meantime, The Electric Theatre remains open for business with a full range of theatrical programming on sale over the summer months and into the autumn season.

VOLUNTEERS AWARDED THE PRESTIGIOUS QUEEN’S AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE The volunteers of The Therapy Garden based at Normandy Surrey, a horticulture and education charity that uses gardening to generate positive change for adults and young people with a range of physical and psychological difficulties, have been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK. Local assessment panels review all the nominations and decide which to send to the National Award Committee. The committee makes recommendations to the Cabinet Office, and the final list is approved by the Queen. Two of the volunteers represented all of The Therapy Garden volunteers at a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, which honoured all the recipients of this award.

“The volunteers are integral to the efficient running of the charity, support of the clients and success of The Therapy Garden,” says the Therapy Garden’s Rachel Allen. “We are delighted that their hard work and commitment has been recognised.” The Therapy Garden’s peaceful one-acre site sits at the heart of the picturesque village of Normandy. The garden has previously received awards such as a ‘Guildford in Bloom’ Gold Award and trophy for ‘Best Community Garden’, the ‘Mayor’s Award for Access’ and a Surrey Wildlife Garden Gold Award. The tranquil garden has been designed with accessibility in mind and include wheelchair friendly pathways, raised vegetable and flowerbeds, sensory areas and quiet spaces. Activities take place in a heated polytunnel classroom or their purpose-built centre, which provides a classroom and refreshment area.

LOCAL SCHOOLS DRAW INSPIRATION FROM THE INGRAM COLLECTION AT THE LIGHTBOX

The popular annual exhibition ‘Centrepiece’ returns to The Lightbox gallery and museum in Woking this month, featuring original works of art by students from six local schools. This year they have taken inspiration from the sculpture ‘Feudalist’ by Jonathan Clarke a contemporary piece from The Ingram Collection. The exhibition is sponsored by the Mayford Decorative and Fine Arts Society. Since 2011, The Lightbox gallery and museum have worked with local schools on a ‘Centrepiece’ project, resulting in an exhibition that showcases the student’s work. Jonathan Clarke, (b. 1961) is a contemporary British sculptor and artist who is famed for creating abstract sculptures using the sandcast polystyrene technique. Sculptures created using this process are completely unique and cannot be replicated. Clarke takes inspiration from social, spiritual and mythological subject matter. ‘Feudalist’, the sculpture selected for the ‘Centrepiece’ exhibition, is one of Jonathan Clarke’s early works and was created in 1992. Students from each of the schools have taken inspiration from this figurative armoured sculpture. Students from Peter Pan Nursery and Forest School, The Hermitage School, Westfield Primary School, St Hugh of Lincoln Catholic Primary School, West Byfleet Junior School, and Cobham Free School have all been working with The Lightbox to create original works of art inspired by the sculpture ‘Feudalist’. Each school selected students from 3 – 11 years old to participate in this educational and fun experience. Schools attended a workshop at The Lightbox where they could see the sculpture up close and work with the Learning and Engagement Team to develop a piece of art based on the shape and style of the sculpture. The free exhibition will be on display from 19 July 2017 – 3 September 2017.

CHARITY SPOT: OCKENDEN INTERNATIONAL

Victims of conflict and citizens of lands decimated by war; the global refugee crisis that exists today is ubiquitous across all the media we consume. Never have we been so saturated by the overwhelming coverage of those burdened by the belligerence of a few. Yet our ability to lend a tangible helping hand is still muddied by the lack of understanding about how our charitable contributions are being spent, let alone, if those funds are reaching those most in need at all. One such exception to the case is the inspirational refugee charity Ockenden International. Initially known as Ockenden Venture, the charity was founded in Woking by school teachers Joyce Pearce OBE, Ruth Hicks and Margaret Dixon in 1955. Originally set up in response to the numbers of Eastern European teenagers from displaced persons camps in Germany, post World War II, the charity’s aims were to support these young people through their secondary education a repeal if you like, against the abandonment of ambition, so easily inherited when life as you know it has ceased to exist. The nature of the world’s ensuing events, led the charity to widen its ambition and operations. In the 50 years or so that have followed this remarkable charity’s inception, Ockenden have gone on to help countless helpless citizens regain their lives and freedoms. Subsequent projects have included those aimed at refugee children in Lebanon, Jordan as well as Tibetan children living in exile in India. The 1970’s we’re notable for Ockenden’s prominence in aiding some 5,000 Vietnamese ‘boat people’ as well as the airlifting of 100 children. At the start of 2000,

Ockenden had overseas programmes in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Iran, Pakistan, Sudan (north) and Uganda. Since the 9/11 terror attacks on the USA and the inevitable outfall of conflict in the Middle East, the need for agencies such as Ockenden has only increased. In 2012 The Ockenden International Prize was conceived with the inaugural prize being presented in 2013. The idea being that numerous charities, that follow in the footsteps of Ockenden’s ethos may benefit practically and purposefully from annual cash prizes. This important monetary prize for a project that aids refugees or displaced people honours Ockenden International’s founder Joyce Pearce and the principles on which Ockenden was established. This year’s prestigious prize was awarded to St. Andrews Refugee Services (StARS) based in Cairo, Egypt, for a programme designed to halt the exodos to Europe of young unaccompanied adults. The charities ambition is to slow the migration rate by providing young beneficiaries with practical reasons to stay where they are. In 2008, Surrey Heritage and the Woking Community Play Association were jointly awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to preserve the captivating story of Joyce Harris and Ockenden’s history as well as celebrating its legacy. The project involved the cataloguing of over 100 boxes of records, the involvement of volunteers to source material, and the recording of memories of people who worked for, or were helped by the charity.

Before I came here I knew very little about this venture. Now it is nearly 5 months since we got here, to this charity. A charity of love and care for the poor – so they can live and have a future. Bloody wars and fighting are everywhere – man is restless and cruel – trying to make peace and happiness by fighting and wars. Hence there are constantly refugees and problems. It is hard to understand, to believe and practice, the right path of law to find solutions of peace and bring an end to the fighting. I think this is one of the rare charities which believes and practices world peace and unity, and has great understanding of the universal problems that poor people face. It believes that the only way to solve these problems is by love and care and giving a future to the people involved. Its care and mother-love has no borders of religion or race. The venture wants to help East and West as well as at home. A venture and leader such as this are rare to find. I wish it lives long and with everlasting peace, love and harmony of spirit. IDLES

Not afraid to say it how it is, IDLES released their debut album Brutalism earlier this year. A ferocious and infectious record, Brutalism displays an honest anger via satirically poignant lyrics and upfront, in your face musicianship. We caught up with frontman Joe Talbot ahead of their performance at Always The Sun on Guildford’s Stoke Park this September. By Alexander D’Arcy For those that might not know, in your own words, describe IDLES… Chubby, loving, heavy post-punk.

Your debut album Brutalism came out earlier this year to much acclaim. It’s upfront, honest and a little angry at times, the sound is a lot heavier than your previous EP’s - what have been your influences? Circumstance really. It took us a long time to find that sound. We’d been working towards different things over the years. When we started as a band we were starting as musicians. None of us had been in bands before; I was learning to sing and the other guys were learning to be in a band together. The main influence on our change as a band came from just realising that

we were trying to be musicians we weren’t and a band we weren’t. I was trying to sing like Orlando Weeks (The Maccabees), Bowen was trying to be good at guitar and he’s not, he’s terrible and Dev (bass) was trying to be Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order). That’s what you do when you learn you know? When you’re learning an instrument, it’s like learning your tool, you’ve only got what’s around you to learn from so you end up sounding like other people, until you grow the confidence or the ability I guess to express yourself properly.

overthinking the music and just started writing what we would have previously thought as not good enough, because it was just simple, agro, punk music, or post punk music whatever it is…I wouldn’t ever class ourselves as punk but also because I think it’s different to that I think. It changed because we learnt more about ourselves and learnt to let go of what we thought was necessary to be a band.

The other thing of course, circumstance is, that my Mum died and we were coming to the end of an era of just realising we were pissed off with what we were doing and not happy as friends and musicians and we wanted to make a change. So we just stopped

the only thing I knew to write about it, it’s what was on my mind, what we talk about at the pub, I don’t know what else to write about. I’m rubbish at telling stories, I couldn’t write a bob Dylan-esque song. There’s no beginning, middle and end to my lyrics, it’s more just broad, abstract strokes, covering things that I’m concerned about.

Have you been surprised at the popularity of the record? Massively, yeah. Obviously we like it, but we saw it as more of a therapeutic release. It was a case of, if we break up and never see each other again at least we’ve got an album (not that were ever going to break up), we’ve got to do this for us you know? As a listen I’ve always found it abrasive and quite hard work. So I just assumed people would

be like “it’s alright, but I’s a bit much, I’m not gonna lie.” But to get a positive response, if any response is great. “…the gig itself was phenomenal for me. It was one of those moments where you realise that we’re doing really well, filling out a room that was last empty when you played there”

You come to play Always The Sun in Guildford in September and played The Boileroom in town as part of your recent tour supporting the album – how was that show for you? How was the tour? It was amazing. In fact, cool story – that was the first time we played Guildford since maybe 2012 or 11. Guildford’s like our second home; our producer and our manager live there. I’ve known Marko, our manager for a long time before the band and he’s from Guildford. He was

in band called Fortune Drive, they’re all from Guildford actually. He moved back and we stayed in contact and we played Guildford to play to Marko really so that he could see us and see if he wanted to manage us. He was tour managing at the time, and I said I really would like you to be our manager, I think you’d be amazing. So we set up this gig where they just booked us quite late to play at The Boileroom and it was just him and the sound engineer. Literally no-one came but he loved it and became our manager from there. And then the next time we played, I think we sold out, it felt sold out, amazing turn out. But the gig itself was phenomenal for me. It was one of those moments where you realise that we’re doing really well, filling out a room that was last empty when you played there. The crowd was great. It was cool.

Indie folk singer Lucy Rose comes to Guildford this September to headline the Park Stage at the second Always The Sun Festival, being held on Guildford’s Stoke Park (8th – 10th September). We caught up with Lucy to talk about tours and her new album ‘Something’s Changing’. Your new album ‘Something’s Changing’ comes out this July – can you tell us a little bit about the album and the title? I really feel like I’ve made the record I’ve always felt like I could make but haven’t until now. It feels so true to who I am as an artist and going forth. It feels like everything suddenly made sense for the first time when it came to writing and recording this record. I guess that’s why it’s called ‘Something’s changing’ because there has been so much change and ongoing change in my life recently and it all feels right.

You’ve just returned from a stint touring Latin America, as part of a fans request campaign and have gone off the beaten track, to places that many other musicians might not venture to. How was that experience for you? As I was living with my fans I got the true local experience and had the best tour guides. Combining travelling with

music has been instrumental to my happiness as a musician and meeting my fans properly and getting to know them has given me real purpose and persistence to carry on making music.

You headline Always The Sun Festival in Guildford this September – what are you looking forward to? Any bands you want to catch? The line-up looks great, I’d like to see Honeyblood and Genghar. And I’m sure to be introduced to some new bands I haven’t heard of before.

Do you have any experiences of Guildford or Surrey that you can tell us about? Well I was born in Frimley hospital so that’s something and lived in Camberley till I was three. Guildford is always lovely when I’m there so I’m looking forward to heading back.

Do you have any extravagances on your tour rider? I’m seriously boring, I think the most exciting thing on my rider is blueberries.

10 Interesting and Unusual Facts About Mediaeval Life E The man who carried the King’s hunting birds to the hunt carried them on a wooden frame called a ‘Codge’. These men were usually elderly and trustworthy servants, and were called ‘Codgers’. This is where we get the term, ‘Old Codgers’. E The King of England employed a special servant whose job it was to attend to his Ma jesty on the toilet, and to ‘assist the King in the use of his toilet paper’. This servant was called the ‘Groom of the Stool’. E Until the 16th century, forks were almost unknown in England. Until then, people ate only with knives and spoons, and occasionally with their fingers.

E Salt was very expensive in medieval times, and pepper and sugar were more expensive by weight than gold. E A medieval Lady, if she was very wealthy, might own as many as six metal needles. In the 14th century, metal needles were more expensive than diamonds. E Most musicians in medieval England were seen as rogues and thieves, and were only allowed to stay inside a house whilst playing. After they had performed, most were required to sleep in the stables or in a barn. E In the early 1500’s, Henry VIII began the Secret Service. Men were sent to the great courts of Europe to spy on other rulers. One of the most common occupations for these spies was as a painter; they would paint the portraits of European nobles and often include secret messages hidden in the objects of the painting. E After a great battle, it was often the job of the local women to help count the bodies of the men killed. As dead bodies are so heavy, they commonly chopped off the hand of the corpse and placed it in a large canvas bag which was later emptied for counting. The bag was commonly called a ‘handbag’, leading to the name we have for women’s bags today.

A monumental weekend of mediaeval mayhem returns to Loxwood Meadow this August, promising fun for the whole family. Taking place over the course of two weekends (5th, 6th, 12th & 13th August) turn back the clock to a time when lives were harsh and hearts were passionate. Over the course of both weekends, visitors can expect real life jousting contests, mediaeval music from the Medieval Babes, plus a plethora of ancient entertainments ready to inspire the most contemporary of minds. Take part in workshops and demonstrations and understand what life might have been like way back when - you can even learn about the traditional skill of Blacksmithing and even sup on some Loxwood Mead should you need to quench you thirst. Dress up and re-live the lives that once were.

E Toilets in the Middle Ages often just emptied into a chamber or a pit close to the castle. When this pit was full, a man was employed to dig it out and carry the waste away in a wheelbarrow. This was not one of the more popular jobs of the time. E Books were rare and expensive in the middle ages as each one had to be copied by hand. This was often done by monks with only candlelight to see by. The work was long and boring, and sometimes the monks would make a mistake. One of the most famous of these was made when copying out what is now called the ‘Infernal Bible’, where one of the Ten Commandments was copied down as ‘THOU SHALT KILL’.

The Oxted Beer Festival

East Surrey’s most prestigious beer and music festival returns for its 6th year running promising the same fun-filled ale fest that now attracts over 10,000 visitors every weekend.

WHERE TO EAT: The Ivy Brasserie, Cobham Surrey’s newest brasserie brings the Big City buzz and time-tested style of its parent restaurant, The Ivy in London’s West End, to Cobham… This year the famous Ivy in Covent Garden turns 100. That’s impressive for any restaurant, so there must be something about The Ivy that has been impressing the generations of actors, artists, politicians and power players that have dined there for so many years. Finding out just what that is though is the hard part. Notoriously difficult to book a table (unless your last name is Moss, Cowell or Beckham), a glimpse into the dining room of the great, the good and the B-list is off the cards for all but

the most patient diners. Until now, that is, with the arrival of the Ivy Brasserie in Cobham.

On the outside, Cobham’s newest restaurant is non-descript to the point of invisible. The old building’s red brick facade trimmed in muted dark green and opaque harlequin windows the only signs betraying the hottest brand to arrive in Surrey for a long time. Even when you enter the tiny lobby, the restaurant remains out of sight until the glamourous red-dressed greeters check you in and usher you gracefully through the door. But then what a sight it is.

Like some of The Ivy’s other high street offspring, this brasserie offers a breezier menu than its more high-end parent, but then for all its celebrity dressing and Private Club posture, the West End mothership never pretended much towards nosh that was overly posh (read: they serve burgers.) But everything on the all-day menu is as polished and enticing as anything you’d find at a quality pub or restaurant these days, even if it’s only a sandwich or other modest, crowd-pleasing fare like fish & chips or shepherd’s pie.

A dazzling, incandescent bar beams out over the first of several dining spaces, all of them dressed in the Ivy’s signature green and glinting copper and vibrant art deco style. It’s crammed with tables and banquette seating, as if they’d been counting on daily invasions of diners, which is just as well as the place was rammed for lunch, from the bar all the

If you’re thinking these don’t exactly capture the level of luxury you’d associate with a name like The Ivy, be assured that we discovered plenty of flash and flourish behind nearly every dish. And there’s a slightly zealous enthusiasm for truffle here, from chicken sarnies to arancini, parmesan chips to mayo, which is always a good thing.

From a surprisingly good value set menu, £16.50 bought us a cheerful golden fishcake flaked through with salmon and haddock, boldly paired with a punchy horseradish crème and gossamer-thin leaves of apple and fennel; then a fillet of roast salmon perched over a delicate salad of quinoa, all pretty in pink with spots of bright radish and pomegranate rubies. Going a la carte brought me a warm crispy duck salad that was, I don’t mind saying, slightly amazing: a perfectly tuned cascade of aromatic flavours and textures, all folding and flowing into each other. That duck, frazzly and crisp and bathed in a treacly, smoky five-spice glaze, was beyond tasty but boosted further by the salad beneath, a delicious mass of toasted cashews, beansprouts, wafer-thin discs of nutty yuca (I think) and refreshing hunks of watermelon. After such a superbly refined starter it felt almost regressive to order a humble burger, but this Special was, they informed me, formed from wagyu beef. All resistance collapsed. What arrived

was indeed a burger of an altogether higher breed, super juicy and sexed up with prosciutto ham and comte cheese melting in curtains around the patty, and all couched in a squishy brioche bun. With twice-possibly-thrice cooked chips and a pot of fragrant truffle mayo to slather over it all, this must be about as much fun as you can have at The Ivy without punching a paparazzi in the face. Oh right, that’s the other place. We just about found room for dessert; a charming ‘cappuccino’ cake, flourless, light but rich and decadent too, loaded with espresso and a milk mousse to scoop it through. It left us contemplating returning here for afternoon tea, but I felt unmanned enough by the Ivy’s simple yet sublime food and lavish service for one day. Until its joined soon by another in Guildford’s Tunsgate, Cobham’s newest brasserie brings the Big City buzz and time-tested style of its parent restaurant to the home counties. So, it’s not just Moss, Cowell and Beckham that can be ‘seen at The Ivy’. Now we can too.

In the last few years we’ve seen the humble hamburger rise from guilty junk food to an expression of the purest, most primal culinary pleasure. The perfect patty, soft bouncy bun and infinite combination of toppings is now rightfully considered a craft in itself, so we’ve hunted down FIVE of the best burger joints in Surrey to help you get closer to the juicy, meaty (and veggie) thrills of a perfectly stacked burger…

The Burger Shack Guildford, Weybridge and Walton-on-Thames

Since sprouting up in dozens of Young’s Pub’s beer gardens, the Burger Shacks have effortlessly nailed the twin pleasures of fabulous burgers and lo-fi al fresco dining. The burgers start with the ‘Classic’ – just burger, cheese, onions, pickles and ketchup and mayo; a veggie burger of beetroot, fennel, lentil and mozzarella, and then the big guns: the ‘Streaky’ and ‘Chilli Pulled Pork’ burgers. The Streaky burger is a standout: A soft, squishy bun and a fat patty cooked perfectly medium, given a light crispy frazzle on the outside and a juicy centre. They add tangy gherkins; onions sweated in Young’s ale to a gelatinous, sticky sweetness, and curtains of cheese melting around the sides. It would be faultless as it is but then thick ribbons of smoked maple bacon give each bite a great whack of flavour and a little chew to finish with. Burger heaven. Burger Shacks can be found at many Young’s pubs, but in Surrey you’ll find them at The Weyside in Guildford, the Swan in Walton-on-Thames and the Hand and Spear in Weybridge.

The White HarT Witley

A traditional British pub with its heart in the American Deep South, there’s really nothing like the White Hart in Surrey. Here, Chef Sam Daffin and his team take inspiration from barbecues from all over the world, cooking such mouth-watering showstoppers as Jacobs ladder beef rib and St Louis cut pork ribs in a wood fired smoker, over sustainably sourced English oak. Guildford’s been crying out for a taste of the American Deep South, and thanks to Joe and Kay Docherty, they finally got it in 2016 in the form of Smokey Joe who have recently taken up their new residence at Guildford’s favourite independent arts venue, the Boileroom. Everything is made fresh on site, with premium quality meats cooked low-and-slow to bring out their maximum flavour and melt-in-your-mouth succulence. When it comes to fun in a bun, though, Smokey Joe proves there are no rules, only uniquely delicious burgers. These include the ‘Barmi Pastrami’ Burger layered with homemade pastrami and Monterey Jack cheese; the much loved ‘Streaking Jack’ cheeseburger with crisp Applewood smoked streaky bacon and even a Caesar salad in chicken burger form: the ‘Hail Caesar’! Black Burgers is a homegrown family affair unique to Surrey. Run by a father and son duo Vas & Philip Herodotou, with family and close friends making up the rest of the key team, Blacks Burgers have grown into a local institution wherever they’ve set up shop, each one a love letter to the classic American diner. The key to their success has got to be those burgers, though. The beef patties are made fresh on site every day, but you could plump for an equally succulent chicken or bean burger too. Several styles of escalating sumptuousness follow: There’s the classic all-American Yippee Burger with relish, gherkins, American Mustard and American cheese. Or how about the punky Rock ‘n’ Rolla: peanut butter, American cheese, bacon and a fried egg? PICK YOUR OWN Picking your own fruit and vegetables isn’t simply a great day out for families and foodies alike, but a guaranteed way to inject your food with the amazing flavours and the nourishment that only freshly plucked ingredients provide. With the first of summer’s crops emerging, we’ve handpicked a few of the very best spots with which to stock your cupboards and fridges with fabulous seasonal fruits and veg.

Garsons at Esher

Secrett’s Farm, Milford

With over 150 acres of fruit, vegetables and flowers, Garson’s is the largest pick your own farm in the UK. From May to October there is a choice of over 30 crops exclusively for harvesting on their farm in Esher, Surrey. The crops include strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, runner beans, peas and courgettes among others.

With a tea room, deli, butchers, florist, farm shop and gardening school, there’s virtually nothing that Secrett’s in Milford doesn’t offer to visitors. The popular farm has been running since 1908 and along with its retail outlets has earned a reputation for producing some of the best fruit and vegetables in the south east.

They also have an excellent farm shop, heaving with tasty, local produce. We recommend you pencil in Saturday 22nd July as that’s when you can visit the Garsons Food Fair and meet the producers in person as well as shopping for the best and freshest local food.

They also host one of the best farmers markets in Surrey. So while you can of course buy their fresh produce in the awesome farm shop, it’s far more fun –and cost effective- to pick your own out on their 150 acre site. Now’s the perfect time to pick strawberries, gooseberries, broad beans, rhubarb cavallo nero and much more.

Crockford Bridge Farm, Addlestone Open from May to September, Crockford Bridge Farm grows more than 20 different crops of fruit and vegetables on its 75 acres. Avalon Garden Centre, Churt Set in the beautiful surroundings of the Surrey Hills, Avalon Garden Centre is a great little destination. They keep a well-stocked Plant Centre stocked with everything you need for the garden including shrubs, roses, perennials and alpines as well as house plants and garden furniture and ornaments. They also have a pretty ace tea room for refreshments. Not many pick your own farms grow blueberries, which makes Avalon something of a rare treasure. Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Saturday 28th and Sunday 30th July

The Prudential Ride London race is a 100-mile and 46-mile bike ride through the London and the Surrey Hills, part of the country’s Olympic legacy from 2012. As well as being an almighty spectacle for those lining the roads, the race raises a vast amount of money for charities both nationally and locally through sponsorship of those brave enough to attempt this epic ride. Starting in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the race follows a serpentine route taking in miles of closed roads that wind through the capital and into our fair county’s stunning countryside. Now there’s no doubt, that the Prudential RideLondon is a world class

festival of cycling. This year sees the fifth iteration since its inauguration in 2013 taking place over the weekend of 28th and 30th of July. The race was conceived not only to be a legacy but also a flagship sporting event, playing a key part in the Mayor of London’s vision of investing more into creating safer, easier and better-connected cycle routes across the capital and its surrounds. Above all, the event seeks to promote a healthier and more outdoors orientated life style. The roads are not only jammed with cyclists abut also thronged with tens of thousands of spectators, because ultimately there’s no other closed-road event like it that combines fun and fellowship with the excitement of watching the world’s best professional cyclist’s race. So how might this affect you if you live in Surrey? Well, roads that encompass the route will be closed from around 5am and what with the weather expected to be a fine July day, we suggest that you dust off those fold out

chairs in the garage, rustle up a picnic and find a great spot by the roads to cheer on those amateur riders to raise money for good causes and applaud the professional cyclists as they zip with police escort through the county. Particularly good spots to see the race are along Staples Hill near Clandon (immortalised during the coverage of 2012) as well as between the pretty villages of Shere and Abinger Hammer where one can enjoy cucumber sandwiches and local Denbies Bubbles on the green. There’s also still time to check if you have friends or colleagues who may be taking part and sponsor them. The race raises so much for charity and no one can sniff at a good cause. Test Dummy: Lawn Bowls We sent Lydia Stockbridge to discover the timeless appeal of one of the UK’s oldest sports and the perfect summertime game… Summer. The cold, dark days of winter are behind us and it’s time to embrace the sushine. Here in Guildford, we’ve waited eagerly for the Lido to open its doors and for the summer festivals to sprout up on Stoke Park. But for those in the know, one of the most quintessential of English summer pastimes is already off to a rolling start in the beautiful gardens of Guildford Castle: Lawn Bowls. Bowls is one of the oldest sports in history, with some records dating back as far as 5000 BC. Heralded as the ‘Sport of Kings’ by King Edward III and his cohorts, it was actually the Scots who laid the foundations for the modern game played today. There are many variations on the game: the French play Petanque, in Italy it’s Boucca, or Basque Bowls in Spain; the sport has a rich cultural heritage wherever it’s played. And Castle Green Bowling Club is no different. The club passed its 90th

birthday back in 2013 but the green itself dates to the 1600s, suggesting that bowls was played in Guildford many moons before the club was founded. For my introduction to the game, I met with coach Colin Summerhayes, ViceChairman of Castle Green Bowling Club. Before he could walk us through the game, we had to first pick out our kit for the evening – weighted ‘Woods’ (the bowls you throw with) and our targets, the ‘Jacks’ (not dissimilar to the Golden Snitch of Harry Potter fame, minus the wings). There are specific bowling shoes to wear to protect the ground, but my trainers were permitted to tread the hallowed green. I stepped lightly over the Keep Off the Grass sign and the instruction commenced. The aim of the game is to get the bowl as close to the jack as possible. A typical game at bowls consists of two teams of three players with four bowls each; and a referee standing by ensure fair play. A point, or shot, is awarded to each bowl of the team who are closest to the jack than the nearest opponent bowl. Having never done well at ball games in the past, with my usual excuse of being

left-handed as an instant handicap where team games were concerned, I had some trepidation that I wouldn’t be able to keep the bowls in the right lane, or ‘rink’. But with a few key tips from Colin, within the hour we saw a marked improvement as I gained confidence. The technique differs from the more familiar ten-pin bowling in that the bowls are weighted to create a curved line, and the ditches are at either end of the rink, rather than the sides. Stepping onto the mat, the idea is to get into a low crouch, swing your arm low to the ground and release the bowl. Strength is not required (much to my relief); a pendulum swing of the arm with a flat palm gives the bowl enough momentum to guide it down the length of the rink towards the jack. As Colin remarked, the dilemma of many a lawn-bowler is getting the line right and the distance wrong, or vice versa. Colin very helpfully placed a marker on the lawn for me to bowl through as a guide, and after several attempts, the bowls started to glide ever closer to the elusive jack. The game has a meditative quality to it, as the sole focus was on perfecting my

aim; despite being quite a public space, curious bystanders and passersby melted into the background on the gorgeous, balmy English summer evening. Do not be fooled however, lawn bowls is a competitive, albeit friendly game with in-house championships, regional, national and international competitions all par for the course. Castle Greens’ own in-house champion had recently triumphed by getting through to the Quarter Final of the Surrey regionals. In a fast-paced world of ever-increasing technology, what lies behind the timeless appeal of a game like Lawn Bowls? Well, for one thing it’s a game for everyone. Men and women of all ages play side by side as equals; the visually impaired and those with mobility issues are all made welcome here; and it’s affordable too, with a secondhand set costing you a mere £25. Castle Green have various open days over the season (April – early September), so head up to the Castle Grounds on Thursday evenings from 6pm for open sessions and step up to the mat and have a go. And if you’re interested in taking it further, new members pay just half price for their first year, with unlimited access to the lawn to perfect your newfound skills.
