UNIVERSITY OF SURREY ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR MEDICINE AWARDED MBE FOR SERVICES TO GENERAL PRACTICE A University of Oxford graduate, Professor Hawthorne is a general practitioner of 28 years’ standing, and an academic medical educator. Her research interests and publication include access to health services for Black and Minority Ethnic and other disadvantaged groups in the UK (with special application to Type 2 Diabetes), the development of social responsibility in health care professionals, and equality and diversity in medical education assessments. Her clinical practice is in a deprived multi-ethnic inner city district of Cardiff.

Professor Hawthorne is also Vice Chair of Professional Development at the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). Her remit at the RCGP is to oversee training, examinations and revalidation, quality in general practice and professional development at all stages of the medical life course – from school students to retention of GPs in their last years of professional work. Professor Hawthorne said: “This award is a tribute to all the professional colleagues I’ve worked with in general practice and community teams over the years, to provide the best possible service to disadvantaged patient groups. This experience is being put to good use in the

design of a modern curriculum, aligned to the needs of patients and the NHS, for application for a new medical school at the University of Surrey.” Professor Max Lu, President and ViceChancellor of the University of Surrey, said: “Kamila is an exemplar of excellence in teaching and learning. I am delighted that the enormous contribution she has made to education is being recognised with this national honour. “As the University of Surrey celebrates its 50th year, the kudos this honour brings to the institution is a great addition to the wide-ranging impact of our first-rate academic endeavours and innovation across many areas.”

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT IS BACK and create as many breaks as you can for people in your community. A chat over a Fairtrade tea or coffee could give them a chance to reflect on whether they are feeding exploitation or actively shopping to support Fairtrade. Fairtrade products are increasingly easy to find in ma jor supermarkets and as a county with 11 Fairtrade towns, it’s clear we care about Fair trade as a community. Local retailers such as Food For Thought, Coffee Culture and Myakka all carry Fairtrade products and promote the social responsibility of global citizens that is supporting Fair trade, so why not drop in for an ethical look around?

We’re spreading the word about Fairtrade Fortnight by telling our readers how to get involved in the national campaign between 27th February and 12th March. The idea this year is to ‘give people a break’: farmers and workers involved in the production of many of the goods we regularly consume are not being paid a fair price for their labour and produce and as a result, they are unable to thrive and support their families. Raise awareness this Fairtrade Fortnight

We’ve learnt that tea pickers in Malawi earn less than £1.46 per day and 1 in 10 children in the tea growing regions there die before their fifth birthday. When you hear about the real people affected by the lack of Fair trade globally, it’s hard not to think that the price of your breaktime coffee could be more than someone’s daily wage. With this in mind, we’ll be stocking up on Fairtrade products for the office during Fairtrade Fortnight and thinking about how we can do our bit to redress the balance. Join us, organise your own event, spread the word: put Fair trade in your break and take exploitation out.

The Lightbox gallery and museum in Woking are celebrating their 10th anniversary in 2017… Having first opened its doors on 14th September 2007, the regional gallery now regularly welcomes just under 100,000 visitors each year. Over the last decade, the programme has grown significantly, with a typical year now boasting 15 – 20 visual art exhibitions of local and national importance, heritage and ‘object in focus’ displays linked to the local history ‘Woking’s Story’ museum, regular talks and tours, arts and craft workshops for people of all ages, and events like comedy nights, film nights and Craft Fairs. Catering for all tastes and budgets, The Lightbox strives to be a cultural hub that is much more than just a gallery for the local region and beyond. To celebrate this milestone, The Lightbox will present a special anniversary programme of exhibitions and events, kicking off the year with the Main Gallery exhibition ‘Henry Moore: Sculpting from Nature’ (21 Jan – 7 May 2017). This new and unique exhibition will feature over 50 artworks by Henry Moore (1898-1986), perceived by many as the greatest British sculptor of the 20th century. The show will include drawings, maquettes, working models and monumental sculptures, plus prints and studio materials. The works are being generously lent by the Henry Moore Foundation, the charitable trust set up by Moore and his family in 1977. In the summer, internationally recognised sculptor Sean Henry will return to Woking, with an exhibition of recent work exhibited in the town in a ‘sculpture trail’ that will lead you to The Lightbox. ‘Sean Henry Sculpture’ (12 August – 5 November 2017) will be made up of painted

sculptures of people that are either smaller or larger than life size. The Main Gallery 2017 programme will close with ‘Turner in Surrey’ (18 November 2017 – 4 March 2018). This exhibition explores J.M.W. Turner’s work produced on his various travels, stops and periods of residence on the Thames, Wey Navigation and in the county of Surrey, prior to the London boundary changes of 1889. Featured works from Tate will include ‘Newark Abbey on the Wey’, ‘Tree Tops and Sky - Guildford Castle’ and ‘View of Richmond Hill and Bridge’. In the Upper Gallery, The Lightbox will commemorate the 100th anniversary of John Minton’s birth with the exhibition ‘John Minton and the Romantic Tradition: The Ingram Collection’ (28 January – 19 March) which will explore his work along with several of his Neo-Romantic contemporaries – Graham Sutherland, Michael Ayrton, John Craxton, John Piper, and Keith Vaughan. ‘The 10th Anniversary Photographic Competition’ will begin in October (14 October 2017 – 7 January 2018) when The Lightbox welcome photographers of all levels to submit their entries on the theme of anniversaries and celebrations. In addition to the exhibition programme, there will be a number of special events in 2017 which will mark the 10th birthday, including the first ever Lightbox Literary Festival, The Lightbox Summer Family Fun Festival and ‘The Lightbox 10th Birthday Party’. It’s going to be a great year at The Lightbox!

CHARITY SPOT - Outline A small charity with only 25 volunteers, Outline provide a vital source of support to the LGBT community in Surrey. With LGBT History Month taking place in February, Chloe Kearns met Chairman Darren Bonner to find out more… It can sometimes feel like we live in a world where we are constantly required to define ourselves, align ourselves with socially desirable trends and advertise our extreme self-confidence using all the forms of social media available to us. But when folks inevitably exceed the space prescribed by society’s boxes, some people can find it difficult to cope. Surrey based charity Outline offer a helpline service to those questioning, or with questions about, their sexuality and gender identity. Between the hours of 7.30pm and 10pm on a Tuesday and Sunday, Outline’s volunteers man their phones. And they ring. Sometimes what follows is a 2-3 minute call about where the nearest sexual health clinic is, other times a 20 minute conversation of a deeply personal nature.

Darren. “We exist to enable a discussion and through open questioning and active listening, we aim to help people position what it is they are dealing with in their personal lives in a way that allows them to manage their feelings.” Outline volunteers can direct callers to credible, certified sources of support and advice about a variety of issues, some LGBT specific and others much broader, such as mental health, domestic violence or substance abuse services. Being LGBT doesn’t preclude people from challenging life situations, but support can feel limited when trying to contend with multiple difficulties at once. While some Outline volunteers are themselves part of the LGBT community, others might be parents, teachers or youth workers with an interest in supporting others in the community at large. Recruited and embraced for their multitude of skills, volunteers undergo in house training to equip them with the skills and confidence to answer calls, often after a period of responding to email communications, submitted by anonymous web form. “We’re not pushy, we’re here, we’ll listen,” says Darren.

“On a typical shift, we might find 15-20 emails waiting for us,” explains Darren Bonner, Chairman of Outline. Outline train their volunteers to listen actively to service users who get in touch via telephone or web form, using appropriate language as proffered by the individual, to help them on their journey of exploration to better understand themselves: some people might be looking for labels in order to gain access to health services difficult for the trans community to obtain; others might be looking to escape labels assigned to them, particularly if in abusive circumstances. During 2015-2016, the top three reasons people talked to Outline were: questioning their sexual or gender identity, social isolation and for support with coming out. “People call for a variety of reasons,” says

For some in the LGBT community, it can be daunting to go out in a gender coded world and function as their authentic ‘selves’Outcrowd provides the safe space to go out and be you! Others might be very confident in themselves but new to the area and looking for friends. For them, Outcrowd could be just the place to meet other individuals who share a love of retro cinema or interior design. With 28 social support events in Leatherhead, Guildford and Woking and 879 attendees, Outcrowd has increased in popularity and is becoming better known locally but could not run without dedicated volunteers and friendly host venues. By engaging with organisations and the public through outreach events, Outline actively works to maintain a visible presence for the LGBT community in Surrey that serves everybody.

As well as free coffee and cake there will be talks from Professor Peter Hegarty (University of Surrey, Surrey Heritage and Outline and a behind the scenes tour of Surrey History Centre. They will also be joined by a whole host of Surrey community organisations with information displays and stands. Free, no booking required, all welcome with refreshments throughout the evening. From Wednesday 1st February – Tuesday 28th February, during normal opening hours there will be a small display at the centre, ‘From Punishment to Pride’ - a small display commemorating 50 years since the passing of the Sexual Offences Act (1967), which freed gay men to love and be loved, in private.

The former electricity plant plays host to a wondrous variety of cultural treats every year. Film plays an important part in their activities and their annual film festival attracts thousands each year. CONVENTION Folk Legends... Fairport Convention are celebrating 50 years of making music this year, with a new album 50:50@50 and a winter tour that brings them to Farnham Maltings this month. Chloe Kearns caught up with founding member Simon Nichol to find out more about the journey so far… How are you feeling ahead of your tour? Excited! We’ve been going out in the winter for quite a few years now but there’s a groundswell of interest now that we’ve hit this milestone of 50 years. Other bands that have managed 50 have probably all got their momentum from some enormous commercial success at some point- we’ve avoided that. So far. (laughs)

Do you wish you’d had a piece of that? I think if we had, we wouldn’t be the way we are now. We’re very much a working band that’s determined to make people go away at the end of the night happy they bought a ticket rather than doing a box ticking exercise for an eye-spy moment. There are a lot of pitfalls that go with that success but as a selfgoverning band, we’ve got a very loyal following and we’re glad to retain our authenticity. It’s wonderful to have an actively engaged audience; we don’t have to go

out and be a tribute act to ourselves. The reason that we do some of the older songs is that we do have fans that have been following us for 40 years and it would be churlish not to but if we do old songs, it’s because they fit.

You’ve received numerous accolades throughout your career: most influential folk album of all time for Lieg & Lief, favourite folk track of all time for Where Does The Time Go, and a lifetime achievement award. What are you most proud of from your 50 years? The lifetime achievement is the one you have to be scared of- who’s lifetime? Actually, having stewarded the annual Cropedy festival to being so much more than Fairport’s gig is something I’m really proud of. Fairport is the common thread, but everyone’s got 20 thousand different reasons to be there. It’s grown to a 3-day event but there’s no commercial involvement and it has to wipe its own feet; pretty good for something run by a bunch of 60s hippies!

Over the band’s career there have been a number of comings and goings, but you’ll be joined on stage at this year’s Cropedy Festival by some old friends? Yeah, it’ll be great to reunite with the extended family of Fairport. We’ve followed each other on our respective journeys and it will be great to see each other and perform. Judy Dyble will be on the stage under her own name for the first time. Ian Matthews will be there,

and Richard Thomson who’s obviously a mega star. And Ashley Hutchings – it’s all going to be good.

What is it about folk music that gives it its contemporary appeal? I’m not an expert in any way on matters folky but I do observe how strongly involving folk music is. With fairly rudimentary equipment, basic skills and an encouraging environment, you can get going around a kitchen table. Somebody will show you a tune and how to change the chords that you know into different shapes and it’s a very hands-on way of learning. The stories of the jilted lover and the underdog are universal themes and the music is just infectious. But don’t ask me to dance, I’m English, so I’m ruled out.

What’s next for Fairport Convention? I’m excited about the latest album and new songs to debut for that audience on that night. The new songs are just as important as the ones that have been in the repertoire since 1969, as much us the previous things we have been known for. Life is about moving forward and you’re only as good as your last gig so we try to make sure every time we play, it’s something to remember.

THE ENGLISH SPEAKING UNION The ESU is a unique educational charity and membership organisation dedicated to helping young people realise their potential through giving them the skills and confidence in communication to articulate their ideas and share them with others. Chloe Kearns caught up with Lorraine Winch-Johnson, Guildford and district Branch Chairman to find out more…

The Guildford and district branch of the English Speaking Union covers a wide area of schools in Surrey, Berkshire and Hampshire, arranging competitions so that students have the opportunity to speak in public. Young people are full of ideas -their views matter, and programmes run by the English Speaking Union, like Discover Your Voice and debating training in junior schools, can help them to be effective and articulate communicators. One of the key characteristics of debate is that candidates are put in a position where they need to think about a topic from multiple perspectives, and then consider the pros and cons of each. Through challenging topics, and debate forums with helpful adjudication and constructive feedback, participants improve their skills rapidly and have great fun in the process. Good critical thinking, expressed in a fair and effective way, is a great strength in any team. Employers are always looking for great communicators and experience gained with the ESU often makes young people more resilient to stress, and quicker to solve problems when they enter the work place. The English Speaking Union also has a marvellous competition for schools

called Performing Shakespeare, which allows students to enter monologues and paired pieces. Shakespeare’s characters and stories are as relevant today as they ever were, featuring love, jealousy, murder, dreams, deception, ambition, families, power … the popular soap opera themes of today! Young people can learn how to perform Shakespeare, “and it makes so much more sense when you come to study it in class” (Alex, 13) There’s really something for everyone at the ESU! Young people can take part in, or watch, debates in venues like the House of Lords, go to the USA on a gap year programme, teach debating across the world, try competitive public speaking, and even join the national debate team! If you enjoy communicating and have an interest in the world, the important issues of our day and travel, you’ll be spoilt for choice at the ESU. Get in touch with the local branch of the English-Speaking Union and become a member! Not only does the branch committee provide local contests but also local activities for members with speakers, music and sociable events.

ON THE GO: THE JUICE SMITH

Astonishing juices are just the tip of the iceberg at Cobham’s super stylish and utterly unique café… Just walking into the Juice Smith in Cobham seems enough to kick-start a deep tissue cleanse; it’s so polished and clean it resembles a café found aboard the Starship Enterprise, all pearly white surfaces and cool, bright light. It stops short of sterile – but not of style- thanks to the jungle of vivid green foliage that spills down one of the shop’s walls. Glance right and your gaze falls upon a rainbow, fridges packed with those titular cold-pressed juices in every colour. You can squint at the ingredients on these bottles until your vision begins to swim, but you’d be better off taking a punt and choosing whichever colour appeals in the moment. A helpful sign above lets you know what colours benefit you in what ways; green for ‘cleansing and strengthening’, red for ‘fortifying and protecting’ or yellow for ‘uplifting and soothing’ for example. I grab a ‘Green Glow’, take a deep, vulgar chug and wonder at the flavours that instantly unfold, blooming out on soft waves of cucumber, pear, lime, spinach, coriander, pineapple and more. It’s startlingly refreshing, almost aggressively nourishing and balanced so cleverly that it’s neither too fruity nor too vegetable. It’s enough to make you, well… glow. But these astonishingly well-crafted juices are merely the banner under which a raft of wholesome goodies bob invitingly at the Juice Smith, as the café offers a range of stunning dishes to eat in or take away. Their food sings from the raw and vegan hymnbook, but not overtly so. Cast preconceptions aside – as I’m finding myself doing ever more frequently – and you’ll find irresistible treats like gluten-free waffles loaded with fruit, seeds and a glossy homemade Nutella sauce,

humming with sweet, natural cacao. Need a breakfast to propel you through the day like a comet? Try an acai bowl fringed with apple slices, bananas, grapes and berries, studded with crunchy buckwheat clusters, a dusting of coconut and all atop a fruity pool of creamy-smooth sweet acai compote. Honestly, if this isn’t what superheroes would eat then I’m Wonder Woman. Savoury dishes serve up such fortifying pleasures as beans on toast splashed with balsamic with a homemade beetroot ketchup, and a signature favourite of theirs that’s never been off the menu that tumbles together wild rice, sweet potato, pumpkin seeds and a wasabi sauce into a kind of vegan jambalaya that was all sorts of satisfying. I was most impressed, though, by a savoury Thai cake, a sort of fish-free fishcake made from mullet grains that had the golden crisp crust and tropical zing you’d want, and came perched on colourful coils of vegetable noodles with a tweak of lime. Elsewhere, the Juice Smith offers wholesome snack bags of biscuits, crisps and other nibbles all crafted with raw and vegan ingredients, personalised juice cleanses, organic smoothies, sublime coffee from Surrey roasters Beanberry and, at weekends, a fry-up breakfast, vegan style. The Juice Smith could have stuck to cranking out their stunning juices and nothing else and they’d still be a gift to Surrey’s healthconscious foodies. The fact that this café offers a bounty of creative vegan dishes as well makes the place an essential visit, whether you’re already a convert or simply curious.

Caracoli's Roasted Red Pepper, Tomato and Basil Soup

Method

Preheat the oven to 180C. Cut the peppers in half, remove the seeds and stalk and place cut side down in a large roasting tin.

I Roast the peppers for 45 minutes, or until the Spring may be a few weeks away, but hold on in there. Soups are one of the best sources of nourishment to see us through these cold months and a great way to make delicious, natural ingredients go a long way whilst saving money. This supremely comforting and tasty soup comes to us from Caracoli, the family of fantastic coffee shops and artisanal food stores scattered around Surrey and Hampshire. It can be made at any time of year and covering the roasted peppers allows them to steam, making removing the skins very easy. A good trick for dozens of other recipes!

I 30g butter I 1 small onion, diced

I Remove from the oven and cover the roasting tin with a clean tea towel or clingfilm and leave for 10 minutes.

I Heat the butter in a large frying pan and cook the onion and garlic on a medium heat until they are softened, about 10 minutes.

I Add the tomatoes and stock and simmer for 15 minutes.

WHERE TO EAT: THE MANDOLAY, GUILDFORD It feels akin to negligence to have lived in Guildford for most of my life and yet have never set a foot in the Mandolay. The town’s only independent boutique hotel, the Edwardian façade has loomed large over London Road for years, an ivory edifice behind which they’ve been quietly building a reputation as a premium choice for weddings, conferences and luxurious accommodation, to say nothing of a restaurant which landed its second AA rosette last January under the watch of Head Chef Mark Lawton. And yet my only prior reconnaissance of the place had amounted to staring dejectedly at the exterior through the window from the dentist’s chair on the other side of the street. It was high time to rectify that. And so it was that on a crisp winter’s day we stepped in from the cold, swung a left at reception and were enveloped in the stylish copper-steel tones of the Mandolay bar. Walking past the gleaming bar top and shelves of fine

spirits, the suggestion of splendid cocktails and Cotton Club glamour begins to get under your skin. And then you turn the corner and find yourself in the restaurant proper and are greeted with perhaps the most striking dining room in Guildford. It’s a sophisticated speakeasy of hard woods, soft jazz, sweeping brown leather booths and banquettes and an art deco beating heart, lit in tones of caramel and amber and the gentle winking from strings of bare lightbulbs. It’s Gatsby restrained, and I loved it on sight.

magnificently with a quail starter. The little bird, so often the dried-out victim of more heavy-handed cooks, was here a sweet, delicate and tender joy, jointed into flavoursome morsels tumbled over a silky pumpkin veloute, soft faggot, quince gel and mousseron mushroom. Across from this was a plate of lobster, poached in butter to luscious tenderness over bright, fragrant flavours of peppers, mango and lime and the gentle turmeric kick of curried oil.

Décor aside, recommendations and my own suspicions had told me that the Mandolay offers one of the few, if only, fine dining restaurants in Guildford. This becomes immediately obvious from the professional poise and charm of our server, but most starkly from the menu. Prices prove it so, but then so does the thought and care that leaps from every dish on the page.

A sumptuous main course of lamb betrayed some classical French flash from 24hr braised neck and breast pressé, cooked to a sticky burnished gold on the outside with juicy layers beneath. Accompanied by tender sweetbreads – a rare and delicious find in these squeamish parts, golden pomme dauphin and delightful textures from crispy sea kale and oats and grains; it was all brought together masterfully with a rich and glossy port sauce.

This was teased early by a cheerful amuse-bouche of airy, creamy tomato soup and toasted focaccia topped with sticky, caramelised ham hock and a dab of burnt apple gel, then unfolded

Such self-assured technique shouldn’t be too surprising, however, as Chef Mark Lawton’s talent has been forged in the kitchens of the Ritz, Le Gavroche and Gordon Ramsay. As a result, what

he unleashes on a plate is studied yet bold and limber, and displays a master’s eye and taste for textures, flavours and ingredients. Where such confidence could have used the tiniest bit of restraint, however, were desserts, particularly one with the winning name of ‘Nitro’. Presented on a cloud of billowing liquid nitrogen, this was some welcome theatre crowned with shards of meringue, a chocolate soil, a jaunty ring of shortbread, lemon sorbet, berries and… well maybe just a tad too much happening for one pud. The cloying sweetness of over-present meringue, however, couldn’t detract from the crème brulee beneath that had been artfully teased into a quenelle, brittle crisp skin, smooth custard and all. A touch more focused was a ‘cox’s pippin apple’, a kind of apple crumble conjured into mousse encased in gelato, apple gel, salted caramel and crumble pastry – a complex confection that still let the natural apple flavour shine through.

At the end of what had been a truly exceptional meal, I’m unreasonably disappointed to learn that the Mandolay are due to refurbish this restaurant for the second time in only a few years. No doubt the new look restaurant will be just as dashing as this one, but when there’s cooking of this calibre, they could smother the walls in tin foil and serve on wicker plates (hey, they do it Hackney) and it would still be one of Guildford’s most essential restaurants.

TEST DRIVE: THE SMART BRABUS

Fiona Knowlton takes the new smart BRABUS ForTwo for a spin and discovers a car bursting with flexibility, charm and surprising power…. When you think of a smart car what springs to mind? For myself, it’s a car that conjures up images of parking in a space the size of a postage stamp in central London. I think of its very distinctive design but alongside this is a curiosity about the actual reality of driving such a small car. So it was with enthusiastic interest that I picked up a black smart BRABUS, the fortwo from a range that includes the forfour and fortwo Cabriolet, from smart at MercedesBenz of Guildford. My family car is a Jeep Wrangler, AKA ‘urban tank’, so the thought of driving a car that fitted neatly onto its side of the road was intriguing and extremely appealing. The thought of being able to drive to a meeting knowing that I would more than likely be able to find a parking space, being able to perform a three point turn quickly rather that a five-point turn was a refreshing thought. Well it turns out you can fit quite a few tricks into such a small package including a one point turn - I know a ONE point turn - but more of that shortly. The first surprise was the amount of space afforded to the driver and passenger. Ok so I know this is not a car known for its space but as a first-time smart driver I was

really surprised at the amount of leg room and general space. The assumption is that to design a car that is small for the purpose of exceptional commuter credentials you will have to seriously compromise on internal space. Now don’t get me wrong, you’re not going to do the weekly food shop for a family of five with this car, but I was able to fit a number of bags in the boot easily. In addition, there are well designed pockets and storage solutions throughout the interior. This results in a driver experience that is easy and simple to function in. But the real win with this car is its driving performance. Again, you assume that such a small car could not possibly be built for performance, but that simply isn’t the case. I know I am used to driving a beast of a car whose acceleration is akin to an elephant rather than a cheetah, but this is the most fun I have had driving a car. The BRABUS also provides the kind of peace of mind that you get when you are driving a car fitted with all the latest cutting-edge safety features. As I mentioned earlier, a turning circle for the fortwo of 6.95 metres means it can perform a one point turn on a standard British road which really is one of the most convenient characteristics of any car I have driven. So, in short, I love being surprised and won over. The real compliment is that I really did not want to give this car back. I would have happily taken it home with me. so Bravo BRABUS!

Scorchers make history with key wins

Few people would have predicted much from Scorchers at the start of the 2016/17 British Basketball League season. Hit with a number of seasons of change, uncertainty and instability, Head Coach Creon Raftopoulos’ side had work to do if they were to silence their critics and be competitive this season.

Play-offs which has meant we have put ourselves in a strong position ahead of a run in of big games.

But recent form has seen them do just that. Three wins on the bounce after the Christmas and New Year period, the club’s best form since March 2013, has cemented their position as one of a handful of teams with strong hopes of reaching the BBL Play-offs at the end of the season- a feat not achieved in the three seasons previous.

The Mercer Surrey Half Marathon won the prestigious award - named as not just the best half marathon, but as the UK’s Best Road Race. The award was won as a direct result of voluntary reviews the event received from its participants. Helen, a previous participant, said “the organisation really was faultless. I would not hesitate to recommend or sign up again,” and others described it as, “everything you want from a race and more.”

The Mercer Surrey Half Marathon is consistently rated highly across all of the ma jor running websites - in some cases scoring as highly as 4.9/5. It compares well against some of the biggest events too, with a whopping score of 86% on Runner’s World, compared to Bath Half Marathon’s score of just 69%. The Mercer Surrey Half’s “official warmup race” placed 2nd in the awards. Despite the frosty conditions on 4th December 2016, aat-events and Guildford and Godalming Athletics Club welcomed almost 1000 participants to the increasingly popular 11.7km road run at Loseley House.

“It’s great to know that the UK’s best running races are happening right here in Surrey. If you’ve not joined the fun yet, do join us. Everyone is welcome,” says race director Toby Jenkins. The 2017 Mercer Surrey Half Marathon is set to be the best event yet. A brand new 5km race has been added to the schedule this year, with the aim of inspiring even more people to get involved. Home Hacks BRIGHT IDEAS

1. Clean your windows with vinegar You don’t need expensive solutions to clean your windows. Fill up a plastic spray bottle with some white vinegar. When your windows are looking a little grimy, spray some vinegar on them, scrunch up a sheet of old newspaper and give them a good scrub.

2. Use plastic straws to organise your wires It’s frustrating when you accidentally pull out the wrong plug, only to find out your laptop has now switched off and you’ve lost all your work. End this now by grabbing a few of those plastic straws that you’ve amassed from fast food outlets. Cut them down the length, and then into short sections and label with a permanent marker. You can then wrap the straws around the wires.

3. Use lemon peel to keep spiders at bay I’m not a big fan of spiders, so for one post I researched into the different ways to keep spiders out of the home. As well as the obvious, such as dusting, vacuuming and decluttering the home, it turns out that spiders hate citrus. Pick up some lemon and rub the peel all over windowsills, bookshelves and anywhere else you may have seen them.

4. Clean real & artificial plants with a hair dryer We all love a bit of greenery in the home, but there’s nothing worse than a thin layer of dust catching your eye while you’re trying to relax. Pick up your hair dryer and using a gentle cool setting, blow away that pesky dust and debris from your real and fake plants.

5. Preserve herbs in ice cube trays It’s so easy to waste fresh herbs if they were used in a recipe, and you don’t normally use them in everyday cooking. Preserve them using an old ice cube tray. Chop up your herbs like rosemary, or mint and pop them into an ice cube tray. Add olive oil and stick them in the freezer. Any time you need that herb, just pop them out and into your pan. Easy!

9. Used coffee grounds as a slug & snail repellent Green-fingered folk aren’t the biggest fans of slugs and snails. If these pests are eating your seedlings and seeds before they’ve had a chance to grow, then put used coffee grounds around the base of your plants.

10. Store washing-up liquid in a pretty bottle Want to neaten up your washing-up area? Pour your washing-up liquid into an old olive oil drizzler bottle and get rid of your old plastic bottle. The oil stopper is perfect for adding to your washing up bowl, and you won’t be tempted to overuse it, saving you money in the long run.
