BUSINESS NEWS

Welcome one and all to the month of April. The season of spring is making its mark countywide in the form of crocuses, daffodils and of course more sunshine hours gracing our days, encouraging us to knock on our friends and neighbours doors, with calls of “come out and play today!” This month, we continue our coverage of the impending General Election; who / what are we exactly voting for? We talk to the candidates clamouring to represent their constituencies - time is running out to register, so if you’re of the age and YOU want to have a say, then, for goodness ruddy sake - make your mark and GO REGISTER! Entertainment wise we talk to the legend that is Craig Charles ahead of his funk and soul night over in Bisley. Now hear this - it’s going to be big! The Easter holiday’s bring with them an abundance of eggciting events and of course eggs, which moves nicely onto the subject matter of our recipe pages this month – Breakfast: Morning, Noon and Night! Fern Green takes us on a hearty eggscapade addressing probably one of the best meals (in many forms) that ever did exist. Also, in this edition we talk Easter Holiday ideas for the little ones, we take a trip to the garden and we speak to one of the leading ladies of Great Britain’s sporting landscape – Uber champion, badminton extraordinaire Gaby Adcock. Finally, it give me great pride, joy and gratitude to inform you that The Guide 2 publications have been nominated for this year’s prestigious Newsawards; which celebrates the best in news media print, technology and business innovation across the country. Watch this space. May your month be full of promise and prosper. Yours Sincerely Mr D’Arcy

ELECTION 2015 GO VOTE Y

X

Over the last few months we’ve been taking the pulse of Surrey’s voters in the build up to the General Election on May 7th. With only a few weeks to go until we head to the polling stations, we ask what matters to you during this pivotal election...

GO Vote V ote

our local MP so it helps when you know your local candidates. But the problem is, I might want to vote for an individual but not for their party. They may appeal to me on local matters but their party doesn’t on national issues.

BEN | 47

GREG | 36

Business Owner Have you decided who you’re voting for yet? K I haven’t yet. I think there’s a tremendous amount of voter apathy. And I don’t think even the local politicians connect very well. However, I have been talking to my local MP about business rates, parking etc. and she has addressed these which is refreshing at least. So you’re more likely to vote on local issues rather than national issues in this election? K Of course, they’re what concern me. I just don’t think politicians are connecting with people. You’ve got Ed Milliband who doesn’t even know how much a weekly shop comes to. It’s pretty basic stuff, but come on. So I would definitely vote on matters that affect people on a local level. I cycle to work so issues like transport and traffic are important to me. Did you pay much attention to March’s budget? K Unfortunately no. That’s the worst thing about cycling to work: you can’t listen to Radio 4!

Will you vote in May? K I’m not interested in politics, but I’ll vote. I get on alright with

So what national issues are important to you in this election? K Well, I’ve got two kids now so I suppose education is one of the most important things. I guess it’s because it’s the start of everything? So it’s vital to get it right. But while I think that the country has gone downhill over the years, there’s no excuse for people to blame things on ‘foreigners’ like they do. That’s taking the easy way out.

issues, when I was younger, but I’ve switched and care more about what affects my family.

What are more important to you: local or national issues? K Local. I’m very focussed on Education and Health. I have a special needs son so that’s where my bias lies. I used to be all about the national

JESSIE | 25 Have you decided who you’re voting for?

05

Do you think there’s a lot of apathy among voters? K Definitely. Because we’ve got nowhere to go. There’s no choice. Even when it was just the Liberals, which you’d vote for only to be obstinate, they’re no fun anymore since they got in. It hasn’t worked. We know hung parliaments don’t work. So what do I do, go Green? They don’t have the policies. My Mum might go UKIP because that’s the way she is, but I’d rather chop my arm off!

Retail Assistant What matters the most to you?

K For me, because I’m still young and don’t have a family, national issues K Yeah, I think so. I haven’t read too matter more for me. Particularly the much into it. I’ve watchedBusiness the news Owner NHS and taxes. and read some opinion.

GENERAL ELECTION 2015:

The UK General Election takes place on Thursday 7th May. So we asked each MP and opp

• WHAT ISSUES ARE YOU/ YOUR PARTY AIMING TO ADDRESS IN YOUR CONSTITU Here are the responses**…

Conservative* MICHAEL GOVE MP, SURREY HEATH Y I want to continue to encourage businesses to invest locally, boosting the economy and bringing more jobs to Surrey Heath. The Conservatives’ long-term plan will make Britain the best place in the world to start and grow a business. Recent figures show our Start-Up Loans are helping us to do that. Surrey Heath needs a transport network that will help our community thrive in a global market. I am fighting for better rail services for Camberley, Frimley and Bagshot, which would prove a big boost for Surrey Heath. I believe strongly that the best way to make families more secure is to let people keep more of their hard-earned money. A future Conservative government will cut income tax and reduce the deficit even further, lifting an estimated 5010 people in Surrey Heath out of paying income tax altogether.

ANNE MILTON MP, GUILDFORD Y As a Guildford resident I’m standing again because I want to carry on working for the protection of our countryside, for an intelligent approach to planning that gives people the houses they can afford; for decent roads and – as a regular commuter - better train services. As a former nurse who worked in the NHS for 25 years, and as a mother of four, I also care about getting funding for the best education and health services possible. We need a Conservative government to make sure our economy is strong enough to safeguard funding for all public services and to preserve the environment. One of my proudest moments as MP was successfully campaigning to save the Royal Surrey County Hospital. As our economy recovers, we need a government that can deal with these pressures in successful areas like Guildford. I will continue to do everything I can to help for all those who get in touch – no problem is too big or small! *Jonathan Lord of Woking also answered our questions but had to be omitted due to space constraints. We apologise and will publish all responses in full on www.theguide2surrey.com.

Labour GARY PUFFETT LABOUR CANDIDATE, ALDERSHOT Y [The issues Aldershot Labour aim to address are] the lack of affordable housing, the cost of living and support of our Armed Forces [Our key policies are] a strong economic foundation,

higher living standards for working families, an NHS with time to care and a Country where the next generation can do better than the last.

JILL RAWLING LABOUR CANDIDATE, WOKING Y We pledge a properly funded NHS with integrated health and social care services, preventing a repeat of the A & E “ma jor incident” situation this winter at St Peter’s Hospital. We will… [ensure there’s] no further privatisation and guarantee a GP appointment within 48 hours – and on the same day for those who need it. Rising bills are putting a real squeeze on working people. That’s why I want to be your next MP – so that I can stand up for local people who deserve better than a Government which gives tax breaks to millionaires but hammers the poor. The news that nearly 1000 Surrey schoolchildren failed to get offered their choice of primary and secondary schools is a disgrace. Our local Conservative MPs should be lobbying the government to make sure there is enough money for school places - a legal obligation. The new houses to be built in Sheerwater will not be social housing with rents capped at 60% of market rates, but so-called “affordable” housing at rents of 80%. Woking families deserve better. Young people in Woking feel disenfranchised by the lack of opportunities available to them. Labour will radically reform vocational education and apprenticeships to create a higher skilled workforce… aim[ing] to end the conditions that force many adults to sofa-surf or continue living with their parents.

Liberal Democrats* KELLY-MARIE BLUNDELL LIB DEM CANDIDATE, GUILDFORD Y No one can talk politics in Guildford without mentioning the Local Plan. I have worked with Guildford Lib Dem Councillors and we are clear on our position for development. We’d be blind to deny housing shortage in Guildford, but we mustn’t allow this to ride roughshod over our green spaces across the borough. One last campaign which is very important to me is tackling the stigma around Mental Health. By investing more into the NHS, the Lib Dems will help address the problems around mental health treatment […] in Guildford and beyond. One of my big campaigns is to reduce business rates for small businesses. With high rents, too many companies cannot get a foot on the ladder in Guildford, and we must work this out to ensure that our town continues to thrive economically [by introducing] lower rates for our town.

YTalking to the Candidates

position candidates in local parliamentary constituencies a couple of simple questions:

UENCY? • WHICH OF YOUR PARTY’S KEY POLICIES APPLY MOST TO THE AREA?

CHRIS TOOK LIB DEM CANDIDATE, WOKING Y Woking needs to use every tool possible to ensure a greater provision of affordable housing in the area. I’ve met countless commuters who, like myself, would love to have a house rather than rent (or have to stay with parents/in-laws). We also really need to address the rail franchise in Woking, especially considering Woking’s growth projections. In terms of population Woking is one of the fastest growing places in Surrey - with that in mind we need to ensure that our health, education and transport provisions are properly geared up to accommodate this growth. The Lib Dem alternative budget proposals allow for increased investment in public services from 2017/18 once the structural deficit is eliminated. Woking will especially benefit from the Lib Dem ‘Cradle to College’ plans. Like NHS spending, we would look to similarly ring fence the education budget. *Patrick Haveron of South West Surrey, Alan Hilliar of Aldershot and Anne-Marie Barker of Surrey Heath are all Lib Dem candidates who also answered our questions but were omitted due to space constraints. We apologise and will publish all responses in full on www.theguide2surrey.com.

Green Party CARL HEWITT GREEN PARTY CANDIDATE, ALDERSHOT Y This is my home - I am truly committed to the area. The current state of Aldershot and Farnborough illustrates how we have been very poorly served over the years. Without change I fear what the future holds, not just here where we live but across the country. Have you had enough of a country run for the benefit of a tiny minority? Where the gap between the rich and poor increases with every government? Of politicians who serve themselves and those who bankroll them rather than the people they were elected to serve? Where billions of pounds can be found to bail out corrupt, incompetent banks, whilst cuts to vital services and austerity measures are imposed to reduce a deficit we are not responsible for? I have and that’s why I’m running as the Green Party candidate Parliament.

DR SUSAN RYLAND GREEN PARTY CANDIDATE, SOUTH WEST SURREY Y [The issues are we’re aiming to address in South West Surrey is] Housing and Green Belt, Health care and food banks and benefit sanctions. We need to increase the provision of social rented homes [by] converting empty premises to social housing, and stipulating a minimum of 50% social rented homes in new developments.

In South West Surrey our hospitals are run by Virgin Care, part of the multinational Virgin Group; a profit-driven business. We oppose [this] insidious privatisation of the NHS. There is a stark contrast between the well-off and those struggling to get by. Food banks are a shocking reality here; we will end the [benefit] sanctions system and ensure that everyone in our community has adequate food, shelter and heating. [The Green’s Key Policies that apply most to the area are:] • Environment and climate change – safeguarding today and tomorrow • Building a fairer society • Health and education – free for everyone • Energy – permanently lower bills • Transport – cheaper and cleaner

UK Independence Party PAUL CHAPMAN UKIP CANDIDATE, SURREY HEATH Y [UKIP wants] to work with residents to ensure that we have our say in the Princess Royal Barracks Deepcut development of 1,200 new homes. Whilst this is exactly the sort of brownfield site we should be building on, local infrastructure must be able to cope with the increased population. [We want] to challenge any future proposal to move the Heathrow flight path over Surrey Heath. We saw (and heard) the misery caused by recent trials. I will oppose any attempt to make this a permanent arrangement. [We want] to protect our green belt land from development. [UKIP Key Policies apply that apply most to the area are] introducing a fairer, points-based, system of controlled immigration in order to ease the pressure on [public] services and stop the wage tax credit funded “race to the bottom” caused by overabundance of low and semi-skilled job seekers from the European Union. [We want to] increase funding and front-line support for a free NHS. [We want to] establish a grammar school in every town and abolishing University tuition fees for students studying Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths or Medicine.

MARK WEBBER UKIP CANDIDATE, SOUTH WEST SURREY Y Planning decisions ‎and overdevelopment. The borough council pushes through unpopular redevelopment schemes such as Brightwells, and is committed to large-scale housebuilding yet our

GENERAL ELECTION 2015 schools and infrastructure are overloaded. [There is currently] inadequate NHS and elderly care provision. Services are being cut‎. We will offer binding local referenda on ma jor planning decisions if triggered by 5% of the electorate and tax benefits to encourage brownfield over greenfield development. We will put an extra £3 billion annually into the NHS paid for by the savings from leaving the EU.

excellent Cobgates care home in Farnham. There is a lack of genuinely affordable housing and people feel powerless in the face of inappropriate planning decisions. The NHA Party has key policies to: Defend the NHS as a public service and ensure it is properly funded so services can maintain their quality and responsiveness. Ensure adequate funding for social care so our elderly can expect high quality care.

Peace Party JOHN MORRIS PEACE PARTY CANDIDATE, GUILDFORD Y The quest for peace is the central issue in politics. The Peace Party recognises that true peace and security can only come through dialogue and all forms of non-violent, compassionate communication, as well as through trade and humanitarian assistance, so the Peace Party believes we should all be engaged in: • Tackling climate change • Eliminating the growing disparity in income between rich and poor • Ending student fees and providing properly funded, free education for everyone • Basing all laws on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights • Welcoming all who wish to live in Britain • Fully funding the NHS • Ensuring that everyone has a home of their own to rent or buy at prices they can afford The need to ensure that everyone has a home of their own to rent or buy at prices they can afford [is a key policy]. I believe that the only way that this can be accomplished is by an urgent, government funded massive home-building programme.

National Health Action Party DR LOUISE IRVINE NATIONAL HEALTH ACTION PARTY, SOUTH WEST SURREY Y The main issues I aim to address are the NHS, public services, housing and development. While NHS services are generally good, local people have told me of increasing problems in quality [in certain] services. Budget restrictions and privatization have played a role. Social services budgets are under severe pressure which is affecting important areas such as elderly care, for example the threatened closure of the

Ensure all have access to decent homes, as there is a strong link between housing and health: new developments must include genuinely affordable homes. Developments must have good health, public transport and social infrastructure, be supported by local people and respect the natural environment.

Your Community News GUILDFORD GETS READY FOR ARMED FORCES DAY 2015

Last month the thunder of heavy artillery heralded 100 days until the 2015 Armed Forces Day 2015 takes place in Guildford on Saturday 27 June. The annual national celebration aims to raise awareness, show support and celebrate the contribution of our servicemen and women, past and present. And give the public a brilliant day out to boot. The countdown event on March 19th was attended by local veterans and cadets, personnel from the Navy, Army and Air Force and representatives from Guildford Borough Council including the Mayor Counsellor David Elms, Cllr Matt Furniss and council leader Stephen Mansbridge who saw – and heard- a deafening five gun salute from two 105mm guns.

Cllr Furniss, whose ward contains Stoke Park which will host the event in June, said: “We’re tremendously excited to host the Armed Forces Day. It’s a great honour to give thanks to the armed forces personnel for all the hard work they do on our behalf. We’re well entrenched in a military county and as the county town it is right that we are able to do it.” The spectacular show at Stoke Park will have stalls and static displays from about 10.30am, with music and entertainment until 7.30pm when the event closes.

Full details can be found at www.armedforcesday.org.uk

AMBITIOUS PLANS FOR STOKE PARK Guildford Borough Council has revealed its intentions to revitalise Stoke Park, making it an “open space that celebrates Guildford and meets the needs of the 21st Century.” Plans being considered include the building of a visitor centre and new catering facilities, as well as a venue for more local events and activities. The park, which is visited by 700,000 people every year, holds a prestigious national Green Flag Award, and has been the venue for

the Surrey County Show for over 60 years. Spectrum Leisure Centre and Guildford Lido, one of the last surviving outdoor pools in the UK, are also part of the park. Following extensive public consultation this summer to explore ways to improve the site, ideas include better facilities for children’s play and restoration of the heritage features, which include the kitchen garden, Cascades and Japanese Garden.

EVERY STEP YOU TAKE: OUT WITH THE TEAM

This month, as part of our focus on Surrey Search and Rescue we’re going to look at the core search method; searching by foot… All search technicians within the team at Surrey Search and Rescue are, first and foremost, foot searchers. For all the gadgetry of the vehicles, the impressive kit of the water team and the four-legged awesomeness of the K9 handlers the most fundamental action any search team can take is getting boots on the ground. The police will know a point where a missing person was last seen and it is from there that the search teams will usually meet. Here, the Search Planner has already formulated a plan, divided the local area up into smaller areas and will hand out tasks to each team. An ideal team is made up of 5 people. This number means everyone can take on a responsibility as well as search. Those

responsibilities are Team Leader, Communications, First Aid and Navigation. Finally, there’s also a note taker (affectionally known as scribe). However it’s not always as clear cut as this is; this is a volunteer organisation and not everyone can attend a callout. It is from this muster point that the team will head out, tasked with looking at specific areas where, statistically, the missing person may be found. For example, a missing child will generally be drawn to buildings; so if you’re looking for a child in a field with a small shack and a tree, then chances are the child will be in the shack. Injured walkers or hikers are normally on paths as this is where they hurt themselves and won’t have moved far. The ma jority of these statistics were collated by an American call Koester and it is his hardresearched findings that drive much of the search planning.

Meanwhile back at the muster point the control van keeps in constant contact with each team through radios and real-time online mapping. The Search Planner and Manager have to constantly assess where and how the team are doing, adjusting their plan as they go. It’s an exceptionally dynamic job and one is only promoted to it through hard, diligent work. At the control van will also be the Police Officer who has overall command of the operation. While all this goes on the Search Teams continue through their designated search areas in an extended line. It doesn’t matter what the weather’s like or what time it is; the team move on. The missing person’s the priority and the team will carry on regardless, hoping that the next thing they say into the radio is “Misper located alive and well”…

OUR HISTORY: STRANGE NAMES FROM GODS by Will Knowlton It’s impossible to argue that religion hasn’t had an effect on history. And as we approach Easter with all the bunnied traditions so clearly laid out in the New Testament, it’s worth thinking back to the days before Christianity came to our shores. Because despite the fact we were essentially living in huts made of dried poo, there were some interesting gods about; and we still use their names in vain to this day.

Cricklestone on Thursley common. Turns out a lot of people think the stone is actually at Pudmore pond, but that’s because a Victorian writer got the location wrong (anyway, once a month Thor visits my house and I doubled checked).

Our Anglo-Saxon forebears came a bit late to Jesus’ party, with the religion only bedding in once Surrey’s king (yeah we had one then) Frithuwold of Chertsey who, along with having a name that sounds like a fruit flavoured suppository, converted in 675. After elevenses.

Gods, goddesses and spirits lived everywhere. Shackstead Lane in Godalming comes from Scucca-stead meaning “place of the evil spirits”; though they may have just been referring to the students at the college. While we’re at it Hascombe comes from “valley of the hag”, doubtless because some poor woman rubbed someone up the wrong way, was accused of being a witch and given a swimming lesson with stone arm-bands.

These sights were sacred to all sorts of religions, and even the druids got in on it. The druids held ceremonies up on Newlands Corner, and these ceremonies were particularly popular with dog walkers, cyclists and bikers who still gather there to this day. These groves were everywhere and indeed the village of Grafham means “farm by the grove”.

“even though it’s seems that we live in normal sounding towns, the truth is stranger.”

Back in those days there was a clearing on a hill near Godalming dedicated to the war god Tiw. Tiw (pronounced “tew”) had a whole field for himself. A clearing in those days was called a Leah and Tiw had one. Tiw’s Leah, or rather Tuesley as it is now. Of course having his own clearing old Tiw became the envy of other gods like Thor. Before he fell in love with Natalie Portman, Thor had a tendency toward tantrums; so the locals dedicated a clearing for him too. Thor’s Leah, or Thursley if you’d prefer. The village still has his Hammer Pond and apparently, during a particularly heavy night on the nectar, Thor loosed a thunderbolt which crashed into the ground, creating the

All these weird and wonderful places were turfed over to the monks and nuns when Surrey went all JAM Club and because of this control they had an easy time suppressing the old ways and religions. Most of the ancient sites were turned into new churches like the small church next to the Yew Tree in Peper Harow. So even though it’s seems that we live in normal sounding towns, the truth is stranger. At least we don’t have names like Dorset; they all sound like characters from a Barbara Cartland novel: “May I present Lytchett Matravers. Lytchett, this is my dear friend Winfrith Newburgh…”

APRIL 2015

Now in its eighth year, Record Store Day is held on Saturday 18th April – come and celebrate this unique event in Surrey… In recent years, the process of purchasing music has changed significantly. The days of flipping through alphabetised paddles in the CD mega-mart feels like a dwindling memory; the surge in streaming and online music purchases has rendered this unnecessary. What this has meant, however, is that the love for the independent record store – coupled with the growing demand for vinyl – has reached a high. Who doesn’t love them? This year taking place on Saturday 18th April, RSD has quickly become one of the biggest celebrations of the UK’s unique independent sector.

WIN an Exclusive Day out for 10 at Daytona Racing Sandown Park!

Some 600 limited edition vinyl, CDs and various promotional releases are made exclusively for the day, and hundreds of artists across the globe make special appearances and performances. Naturally, Surrey’s record stores are involved and will be stocking some of these exclusive releases. Don’t be scouring about on the interwebs now – these will only be sold in the participating stores you can see below. But of course, don’t just use RSD as an excuse to visit one of our fair county’s glorious record stores; go and become a regular! You’ll pick up tips, meet fellow music lovers and pick up a hidden gem or two…

CRAIG CHARLES

By Rich Lee

I’ll keep going boldly like Captain Kirk! He’s the star of TV’s Red Dwarf and Coronation Street but he’s perhaps better known these days as the eponymous superstar DJ on Radio 6 Music’s Craig Charles Funk and Soul Hour. And on Saturday 18th April Craig Charles will top the bill at ModernisM’s all-day celebration of mod, funk and soul at Bisley Pavilion. Actor, comedian, author, musician, poet, television presenter, DJ. Which fits you best?

What have you got coming up on TV this year?

Your Funk and Soul Hour has run for 13 years and has arguably come to redefine you in the public’s imagination. Did you expect the show to become the institution that it has become?

How does it feel to have been part of such an iconic cult hit like Red Dwarf?

I enjoy doing them all. I’m quite hyperactive and enjoy filling my time up with things. If I was just doing one I’d get bored out of my mind.

All sorts. There’s two new series of Red Dwarf coming up. I’ve written a new series of poems called Scary Fairy and the Tales of Dark Wood which we’re hoping to do with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and getting them animated as well. So I’m spinning a lot of plates!

When we first started on Radio 6 Music I could have got a bigger audience for my music if I’d just drove round London with the window wound down. But it’s now got the biggest audience share of the network and is the biggest show on 6 and it’s overseen the resurgence of the funk and soul genre. There’s so much new music being made its absolutely brilliant.

It’s just great. Red Dwarf 10 did so well when it came back a couple of years ago. It got more views on Dave than BBC 2 and Channel Four put together so it shows the audience hasn’t gone away and they loved it. So I’ll keep going boldly like Captain Kirk! Perhaps Lister’s haircut isn’t appropriate for a fifty-year old man, but f**k it, I’m going for it.

Why do you think the genre has endured so well?

Finally, for those coming to see you at Modernism who haven’t experienced a live Craig Charles show before, what can they expect?

It’s music with a wiggle on it. It’s good-time music, party music, real music that you can dance to. No matter what kind of music you’re into – Rock, Dance, Metal, whatever – everybody’s got a favourite soul tune.

How did your relationship with soul music come about?

It started as a kid and I remember watching my parents dancing around the kitchen to Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. I grew up listening to the golden era of black American music and that’s what we do on our show; we revisit that era and the European response to that music.

No sleep till way past bedtime, put it that way. Just party tunes, good times, great music, great atmosphere. No knobheads, just proper coolness man.

Craig Charles will deliver a storming DJ set to close off ModernisM’s all day music event alongside artists like Smoove & Turrell and Stone Foundation. Find We Are Modernism on Facebook and visit www.bisleypavilion. com for more information.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S BIRTHDAY BASH! 2014 was a big year for the Big Bard. His 450th birthday was celebrated all around the world, but on our home turf it was left to the award-winning Guildford Shakespeare Company to pull out all the stops to commemorate Shakespeare in their own inimitable style. Which they certainly did! So expect no less from founder Matt Pinches and his talented troupe this April, as they unleash another bout of Shakespeare love on Guildford for his 451st birthday bash. There will be a very special staged reading of one of Shakespeare’s less performed plays, Pericles, on Saturday 18th April. Tickets cost £12.50 and the venue is St. Mary’s Church, Guildford. On Thursday 23rd April, Matt delivers another fascinating, illustrated ‘Birthday Lecture” turning his huge insight upon Shakespeare’s Theatres. Tickets cost £10 and the venue is St. Mary’s Church, Guildford.

Finally, on 25th & 26th April, we get the very welcome return of the Company’s hugely popular Sonnet Walk which sees groups of walkers following an especially designed route around Guildford, discovering scenes and sonnets from Shakespeare in the most unlikely of places. APRIL 2015

Saturday 14th March saw the inaugural Big Busk on Guildford High Street, and despite the biting temperatures it was a resounding success and was showcased on BBC South that evening… Hosted by TG Media and in conjunction with the Guildford International Music Festival we began on a windy (though thankfully dry) March morning and set up stalls at the top and bottom of the High Street. Kick-starting at 11am and going right through to 5pm, we truly saw the cream of the crop when it came to Surrey-based musicians. A huge variety was on offer, from young solo singer-songwriters through to established foot-stomping fun-purveyors; it’s fair to say there was a real ‘festival’ vibe in Guildford. Particularly when Ukejam, Charley Farley Sunday Four and the delightfully-monikered Nefarious Picaroons brought the sing-alongs… A big shout-out though to the bright young things who came along and proved that

there’s so much on offer in the area; we truly are blessed with talent around here… Naturally we will be sure to keep you updated of future Big Busk events; this may have been the first one we at The Guide 2 Surrey have held, but it sure as shoot won’t be the last! So a big thanks to everyone who turned out, performed, bobbed their head, and generally enjoyed the day. Big love to Burrito Loco for dishing out free food to the performers too. Here’s to the next one!

Talking to…

Jason Donovan By Alex D’Arcy

I feel like I’ve never been a naturally gifted performer, I’ve had to work very hard at it The Kings Speech comes to the stage of the New Victoria in Woking this month. We caught up with one of the stars – a certain Australian named Jason Donovan… You are currently touring the screen to stage adaptation of The Kings Speech. How has the tour gone so far? Yeah it’s good. The King’s Speech was first conceived as a play, but it lends itself so well to a film that I think it was a logical progression. I play an Australian therapist so I don’t have to worry too much about the accent – I’m not getting too many critical comments about that! It’s a real challenge for me and maybe it’ll be a turning point for the way people look at me. I love being in musicals, but it’s nice not to be singing every night!

How has your return to the stage (in a non-musical capacity) compared to the last time you were treading the boards in Melbourne-produced Festen (2006)? Yeah, that was a long time ago! For me it’s always been about the acting. Music and musicals sort of happened to me by default. I also fell in love with pop music and had lots of success with that. Musicals have been good to me too, but it’s always been about the acting for me.

Do you find there are similarities between yourself and therapist Lionel Logue? I think you’ve got to always have an element of yourself within the character, but I really feel that I found one in this part. It jumps off the page - there was a bit of a light bulb moment

in the rehearsal process where it all came together and I really found my rhythm with it. I feel very comfortable actually. It was a difficult birth but sustaining it hasn’t been hard because I’m enjoying playing the character.

What’s the hardest obstacle you’ve had to overcome in the face of adversity? That’s a very difficult question. I don’t have any physical ailments that hold me back. I’ve had a very fortunate life. Nothing like King George; I relate to him in a similar sense, to the fear. I feel like I’ve never been a naturally gifted performer, I’ve had to work very hard at it, and maybe it’s only now that it’s starting to become a little more natural to me.

The child from your onscreen relationship with Charlene (Kylie Minogue) has now reappeared as a regular character in Aussie soap Neighbours – a certain Daniel Robinson. Is there any hope for Scott Robinson fans out there, that you may reprise the role of father? Well I get asked this every day! I’m very proud of Neighbours and what it’s given me and I owe a lot to it, but you know, it was a big four years for a lot of people out there. I understand the emotional connection, but at the moment, there are no plans to return…

The Kings Speech at The New Victoria Theatre / 7th – 11th April / Tickets range from £11.00 - £37.90, plus booking fee. Book online at www.atgtickets.com/ shows/the-kings-speech/new-victoriatheatre/ Image Credit: Hugo Glendinning

Okay, kid’s clothes don’t tend to be too dreary, but you do tend to see the same colours and the same patterns coming through year on year. Pinks for girls, blue for boys and then a multitude of stereotypical variations on these colours and designs.

“No more, no more” is the party line coming from Farnborough based, husband and wife team, James and Kate, who run the wonderfully named online burp! boutique; a collection of some crazy cool couture for the little ones as well as visually and mentally stimulating play toys, wall toys and much more. All importantly they’re great supporters of British designers and British made clothes. Here are a few of our faves from their collection.

MUM’S THE WORD P&G SURREY YOUTH GAMES IS BACK

The P&G Surrey Youth Games is back and this year and it’s bigger than ever! The multi-sports competition, spread over two days in June (20 & 21), is when all districts of Surrey enter teams into fifteen different sporting events. There are events for all ages, including events for young people with disabilities. Young people attend local coaching sessions in the two months prior to the Games. For many of the players selected the event is their first experience of countywide competition. Since P&G Surrey Youth Games’ birth in 1997, it continued to grow year-on-year. In 2013 Guildford’s Surrey Sports Park became their main sponsor, with the world-class venue also becoming the games’ host each year.

The aim of these games, as it has been since 1997, is to develop sport within Surrey and to also give youth a chance to compete from a young age and to experience competition. With April looming large, it’s time to get involved, be it competing or volunteering with other much-needed particulars – like scoring/ umpiring etc.

To get involved or volunteer and experience a localized Olympic sporting event, email: lil.roe@surreycc.gov.uk or call 07791380547 (applications close April 30th).

GOGGLES THE GOFEST GORILLA REVEALED A student from Northmead Junior School, Stoughton, has won GoFest’s mascot competition after football legend Kevin Keegan picked his drawing of ‘Goggles the GoFest Gorilla’ as the winning design... GoFest 2015 put a call out across the nation for a friendly, fun and energising mascot and after hundreds of entries, they were whittled down to three finalists when GoFest ambassador, Kevin Keegan, chose Goggles the Gorilla. He comments: “It was a tough decision as the drawings were so creative and well thought out. I’m looking forward to seeing Goggles in action at GoFest!” Toby entered the mascot design competition after his Mum spotted the information in the Surrey Advertiser and thought it would be perfect for her son’s imaginative mind. Toby said: “I decided on a Gorilla as the mascot because my little brother likes eating bananas, and I chose the name Goggles because I really like swimming. I love football so added this in my drawing too.”

GoFest was created to encourage families to spend quality time together whilst getting active and trying new sports. Founder Paul Farris said: “We’re thrilled to launch our first festival in Surrey and encourage families from across the region to ‘have a go’ at as many sports and activities as possible.” For more information and the full range of activities available, please visit: www.gofest.co.uk

Not living too far away from Portsmouth, I always wondered why I hadn’t been or taken my kids down to the dockyard. Admittedly, I had wondered if it would all be a bit too much for the little one to enjoy it. However, as his fourth birthday beckoned, I thought why not? He loves boats with an almost religious zeal, and I’m in my thirties and I need excuses to look at naval ships and play on arcades…

took to strolling proprietorially around the deck, hands clasped behind his back issuing orders.

Tickets seemed expensive at first until I realised that I was buying a ticket for the whole Dockyard, the Submarine Museum at Gosport, the boat to get over there and Harbour cruise. Moreover, it was not just for today but for a whole year.

HMS Warrior towers over you as you leave the ticket office and we decided to hit that first. My son loved it and immediately took to strolling proprietorially around the deck, hands clasped behind his back issuing orders. Next we went over to see HMS Victory, The Royal Navy’s oldest commissioned vessel, which technically means that it can still be sent to war (though I don’t rate her chances against a RBS-15 mk3 missile; but there’s no romance in reality is there?). Goodness me isn’t Victory small? When you walk from deck to deck, you suddenly realise how claustrophobic it must have been to have been on the line. Both ships share the same trait though; they’re fun and educational without putting the fear of god in you. When we left Victory, we could see right into the Dockyard at all the moored ships of today’s Navy. Obviously, there was no public access, but the ships we guarded with friendly naval personnel happy to chat to my son. Grub and grog beckoned at this stage, so we headed for one of the cafes. They offered a nice touch with a build-your-own lunch box for kids. My son loved it and he managed not to pick thirty different types of chocolate too - always a bonus. Next we wanted to try out the Harbour tour. This was fantastic because being able to see the shoreline means you see stuff you wouldn’t normally, and gives you the chance to get a closer look at our modern, space age navy fleet. You can also use the tour as an ad hoc bus service, so you can hop off at various points like Gunwharf Quays. So all in all, a fantastic and reasonably priced day out. The level of education at the Dockyard is completely geared to all ages; not too much for a toddler, and more importantly not too little for an adult with much on their mind and not an awful lot in it…

Fleecy Frolics at Merrist Wood

What better herald of spring is there than the soft bleating of lambs with their bouncy enthusiasm and boundless energy? Well, the students and staff at Merrist Wood College are at it again this year proudly showing off their new born lambs at the annual Fleecy Frolics event. And the students should be proud for the college’s flock are their responsibility throughout the duration of the academic year. The hard work of the lambing season is made all the more bearable by the satisfaction and joy of the new members of the flock. Fleecy Frolics is a fantastic open day; Expect craft demonstrations, chain saw displays new lambs, fun activities, refreshments throughout the college and maybe even see some lambs being born. (Last year some of us at TG Towers may have pushed our 5 year olds aside to be the first in line at using diggers as well!) It’s a great day for the kids as they get to see how life on the farm works. Entry is just £6 for adults and £4 for children and concessions. Under twos go free and there is a Family ticket (2 adults, three kids) for just £15! Want to be organised and avoid

disappointment? Well you can book early online at www.merristwood.ac.uk to enjoy £1 off ticket prices.

SERIOUS BIT NOW THOUGH FOLKS: Please do not bring dogs to the lambing sheds (guide dogs are fine). Also women who are, or think they may be, pregnant MUST NOT attend this event. No one likes to cut anyone out of the fun but lambs sometimes carry a disease that will cause miscarriage. As a visitor it is your responsibility to wash your hands at the myriad of hand washing stations that will be provided on the day. Farm animals may carry bugs but they’re nothing that a good dose of soap won’t fix!

BREAKFAST Morning, Noon and Night For many of us, a lazy weekend breakfast or brunch is the best meal of the week. Fern Green certainly thinks so, as the Godalming-based food stylist and writer has written a book dedicated to enjoying Breakfast: Morning, Noon and Night. Featuring over 70 recipes inspired by dishes from around the world, Fern stretches the pleasure of breakfast to incorporate great lunchtime meals and fantastic suppers. In this month’s issue, she shares two of her favourite recipes…

Serves 4-6 Serves 4-6 • 100 g (3 1/2 oz) smoked streaky bacon or smoked pancetta, cut into 1 cm (1/2 in) cubes • 6 cherry tomatoes, halved and seed removed • 2 field mushrooms, sliced • 1 x 320g (11 1/2 oz) roll readymade butter puff pastry • 4 sun-dried tomatoes, chopped

• 4 eggs, boiled for 6 minutes in boiling water and halved • olive oil • 2 slices white bread • Handful of chopped parsley • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

My fry-up Turn the grill on to high. Spread the bacon, tomatoes and mushrooms evenly on to a baking tray and grill for 3–4 minutes, turning once, then take them out and set aside. Preheat the oven to 200 0C (400 0F/Gas 6) and line another baking tray with baking parchment. Roll out the pastry to around 350 mm x 225 mm (14 in x 9 in), and lay it on the parchment. Using a fork, prick the pastry all over to prevent it from rising when it cooks. Bake in the oven for 5 minutes then remove. Arrange the sun-dried tomatoes evenly over the pastry. Then add the bacon, tomatoes and mushrooms and top with the boiled eggs. Brush all over with a little oil and bake for a further 8–10 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown. While the tart is cooking, whizz the white bread in a food processor, add the chopped parsley and season. Crisp the mixture up in a frying pan with a teaspoon of oil. Serve with the parsley crumbs sprinkled over the top and your choice of sauces.

“Everyone has their own favourite fry-up ingredients, so I’ve included this recipe, where you can change the toppings to suit your tastes but serve them in a slightly different way.”

SPORT

Fast-paced, explosive and exciting; Just three things us Brits seem to crave in our sports, and with Badminton having all three in abundance, it’s a shock that the sport’s rise to popularity has taken until now.

Many put it down to the London Olympics showcasing the best of the sport, but since the start of the NBL (National Badminton League) season, participation and the following of Badminton has increased dramatically.

It’s been a mightily impressive 2014 and 2015 for you so far, could you have asked for much more?

as I said, they put on a great show for our match nights which makes the experience so much better - especially for the kids!

No - so far it’s been amazing. Surrey Smashers couldn’t be in a better position at the minute, we haven’t lost a game and we’re looking really strong for the finals. On a personal level too, me and Chris Langridge are going from strengthto-strength, we’re playing well and we’re always improving.

And your goals for the rest of the season…

How do you think the NBL has fared in its first season? I know badminton’s an amazing sport and it’s such a fast, exciting game, so it was really just a case of getting people to either tune in or come and watch. It’s been a brilliant first campaign, I think everyone would agree.

Did you expect the crowd to be as large and vocal as they have been? No, in all honesty that’s one thing that has surprised me. I didn’t expect the crowd and the noise to be as amazing as it has been. It really makes the evenings and has made it enjoyable to play in front of. The good thing is, that they keep coming back and giving us a real boost. It’s obviously working!

The crowds are brilliant, but Surrey Sports Park’s pretty good as a home venue too, right? It’s amazing. I couldn’t fault it at all. We always feel welcomed by everyone there, the food they put on for us, the superb facilities, everything is spot on really. And,

We spoke to Great Britain and Surrey Smashers’ Gabby Adcock on the NBL’s maiden voyage, her season so far and just how brilliant Surrey Sports Park is…

Obviously I want Surrey Smashers to win, that’s a given! But for me, on a personal level, I have a few short-term goals. I want to try to return from the World Championships and then the European Championships with a medal from both and really just get as many titles and accolades under the belt as I can individually and in doubles. Everything’s leading up to Rio 2016 for me.

Finally, what advice would you give to any young badminton players that’d like to be where you are at some stage? Just enjoy it. At first have fun with it, but then make sure you enjoy it. Hit on court as much as you can, but it’s the fun aspect that’s crucial. The more kids enjoy it, the more they’ll want to practice, y’know. Also, come and watch Surrey Smashers and see how quick and explosive it is. Hopefully we can inspire kids too!

LEADING LADY: Tamsin Greenaway After winning her first Netball Superleague title almost ten years ago, followed by stints in the Australian ANZ Championships with success at International level too, Surrey Storm player-coach Tamsin Greenway’s been there and done almost everything. By Tayler Willson Despite that, she’s still as determined as ever to taste success in the Superleague this year with Storm – especially after last year’s final heartbreak. Storm went last season undefeated, but were denied a first Superleague title by Manchester Thunder in the final. Greenway, however, is happy with how this season has gone so far and believes they have what it takes to be crowned champions.

that came in the opening game of the season. “I absolutely love Surrey Sports Park. Their facilities are second to none, I love bringing in new players and being able to tell them that this is our home. The fans have also been incredible, to sell-out all our home games before even the start of the season is just madness – it’s full credit to what the Sports Park team have done to promote Netball.”

“We’re pleased with where we are, yes. We were undefeated all the way through last season and into the finals - that didn’t help us win the actual thing! We’re pleased with what we are doing currently and with how we’re performing.”

August also sees the Australian Netball World Cup, and with a recent change in management for England, Greenway is keen to get herself on the plane following a spell away from the national set-up.

Storm have twice tasted defeat this campaign both to Manchester Thunder – and with first place seemingly out of reach, holding onto second spot and a home semi-final now remains their priority.

“It’s all about impressing the new coach for me, I’ve put my name up for selection. I see it as if I can get back to where I should be fitness-wise, then hopefully I can be on that plane.

“You always want a home semi-final and yes it was disappointing to lose to Thunder twice, but we played poorly against them and didn’t deserve anything from the games. Against a team of that quality you have to be on top of your game and unfortunately we weren’t.”

The England squad have done such a good job over the past year that I haven’t been in it and they’ve come on leaps and bounds. I’m playing catch-up, but I’m in one of the best franchise to impress at Storm and am playing with two of the best players in the England squad in Pamela Cookey and Rachel Dunn – fingers crossed we continue to do well and I’ll get that call-up.”

Surrey Sports Park’s been somewhat of a fortress, with sell-out crowds all season and only one defeat

TEST DUMMY “ I signed away the next hour of my life to brutality, sweat and, quite possibly, floods of tears. “ By Tayler Willson

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Sport

SPORT

Folding myself up at a Yoga session one week and then face-down in the dirt during Elite Military training the next; it’s different, I know. But that’s what you get being the Test Dummy. You experience a variety of exercises and sports, some that I’d never heard of before. The Elite Military training, or ParaFit as it’s known, however, was a workout I had heard of, and it was a session I knew would break me. I arrived at Aldershot Army Barracks a hefty thirty-five minutes before the session was due to kick-off, for the most part because the traffic was surprisingly kind, but I also wanted to seem keen. I was greeted by two men who made me look like that fat guy in a pub, with them looking like they’d been tee-total and lifted weights from the age of three. The usual contract was put in front of me before I set off and, yet again, I signed away the next hour of my life to brutality, sweat and, quite possibly, floods of tears. The session began with what they described as a light warm-up. This light warm-up seemed very heavy to me, however, and after five minutes of dynamic stretching, I was probably ready to go AWOL. We were given the choice to enter one of three sessions: Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced. Being the man I am, and that I had our photographer Fi Digby-Jones to impress, I went for the latter – a decision I regretted almost immediately. “Up to the top field!” a man shouted, as I hurriedly followed a group of people who were clearly way fitter than me. We approached an assault course that involved squats and press-ups etc., but also tyre-flipping and lifting barrels. We teamed up into threes and went at the course hammer and tongs. Within minutes the sweat I’d built up from the light warm-up had almost tripled, but now I felt more determined, I had two people to effectively compete against. Admittedly, as the assault course came to a close, I felt relieved. I had put my all into it and

I had worked harder than I had in years. “On to the next one!” I heard from our leader who, at first, I thought was joking – he wasn’t. I again followed our mob as we approached a row of mats, and formed ourselves into pairs. Whilst one person would remain on the mats doing whatever was asked of them (press-ups, sit-ups, squats etc.), the other partner would run the said number of laps – we’d then swapover. This continued for around twenty minutes, by which time I was almost at breaking point. I had put everything into this session; I had fully worked out like I never had before. I just needed rest. Finally, as I was contemplating faking a faint, they called a halt to proceedings. We headed back to our light warm-up space, for a warm down session. “The first time is always the hardest,” a lady said to me as the session wrapped up – I clearly looked ill. As I sat down for the first time after its conclusion, I actually felt pretty great. I’d worked hard, felt the pain and hadn’t cried. It was a full-body workout that I felt good about. For anyone with goals to improve their fitness or simply get more active, Para-Fit is certainly the answer. Despite definitely failing impressing our photographer, I did impress myself (I also slept the whole train journey home).

THE PIGEON RACER By Tayler Willson

Pigeon Racing is one of those sports I thought didn’t really exist anymore - like Billiards or Jacks but actually, after meeting Mike Armitage it’s clear my presumptions were well off the mark. Mike runs The Lion Brewery in Ash alongside three Pigeon clubs; clubs that’ve become increasingly popular in recent years. “I’ve got three pigeons clubs here,” he explained, “The Lion Brewery Midweek Club, The National Flying Club and the one that’s growing most rapidly, the British International Championship Club.” Since Mike took over the running of the latter, its membership has risen from just over 100 to over 1,500. But he doesn’t expect the increase in participation to stop just there: “What people don’t realise is that you can get involved at any age. This can be a sport and a hobby that could

keep youngsters off the streets. Once you get the bug for pigeon racing, it’s not something that leaves you. “To get involved, all people need to do is either come in [to the Lion Brewery] or contact me [contact details below]. They can them come along and see what it’s about. Like I said, once you get the bug, it’s not something that will leave you.” The Pigeon bug certainly did have me intrigued and Mike then began to explain exactly what’s involved in the sport, and specifically for breeding the perfect racer. “It isn’t simply just a race, it takes a lot of work and dedication to train a pigeon up to be a winner – luckily here we know what we’re doing and we’ve won quite a bit of money in my time. I had one pigeon that came 70th in a race out of 11,000, which isn’t too bad, aye. “But it’s a multitude of things is racing, it’s, yes, training a pigeon to be a racer, but it’s also about maintaining them, feeding them the correct food and giving them a happy life. Pigeons are a lot like humans, in that the happier they are the better they’ll race.” With the Midweek Club’s season

getting underway shortly, now’s the time to try your hand at something a little different this summer. Oh and it’s at a pub; did we mention that? The Lion Brewery Midweek Club: The headquarters is The Lion Brewery and races are every Wednesday from April to September. 5G Innovation

The 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) at the University of Surrey is the UK’s only research centre dedicated to the next generation of mobile communications. Due to open its doors in September 2015, the 5GIC is part of the University’s Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) and will draw on Surrey’s pioneering knowledge in mobile communication systems.

A Surrey Development

The ICS made a ma jor contribution towards the development of 2G technology in the 1990s, 3G in the 2000s and 4G since 2010. So the University has had a significant bearing on how your turn-of-the-century Snake-playing brick has evolved into the stylish, powerful data-gobbler of today…

Some of you may be aware that the University of Surrey is something of a technological hub, having led the way in various satellite and space projects. Now, they’ve taken on the mantle of being the centre for British 5G development, the next stage of mobile telecommunications standards…

Surrey Chamber reveals Surrey’s Top Business women What better day, than on International Women’s Day, to celebrate the best businesswomen in Surrey. That’s exactly what happened at the inaugural ceremony on March 10th presented by Surrey Chambers Businesswomen in Surrey (BWiS) at the WWF headquarters in Woking. Key speeches were given by some of Surrey’s leading ladies including Guildford’s MP, Anne Milton, with the overriding theme of the evening was that women should celebrate their achievements in the work place much more and to shout from the roof tops about their successes. Louise Punter, chief executive, Surrey Chambers of Commerce, said: “It was a fabulous evening with lots of talented women and men in the room keen to celebrate all that is great about businesswomen in Surrey.

THE DAYTONA

BUSINESS TEAM CHALLENGE 2015 Ever wondered if you and your work colleagues were the fastest in your region? Me neither, but I bet you are now and luckily the Daytona Business Team Challenge 2015 isn’t too far away. This year’s local event, held at Surrey’s Sandown Park, gives each team six chances to qualify for the Manchester final later on in the year, with one-and-a-half hour team endurance qualifying races being held on the second Monday of each month from April to September.

“2014… saw over 300 companies from around the country battle it out to be crowned champions” The dates of the qualifying are as follows; 13th April, 11th May, 8th June, 13th July, 10th August and 14th September. The 2014 event was highly successful and saw over 300 companies from around the country battle it out to be crowned champions. This year’s is expected to even surpass that with hundreds already signed up and still two months to go. The races themselves take place in the evening, with each driver being given a full briefing beforehand. They are then given a practice lap, before the ninety minute race commences. Sandown Park will have a whole host of food and drink available for those watching and competing and these will be available throughout the evening. It’ll be the top four teams that qualify for free entry to the Manchester final on 5th October 2015, with the winning team being named Daytona’s Regional Business Team Challenge Champions. The regional winners will also receive a free Exclusive Christmas Race Event for up to 24 drivers at Sandown Park!
