OUR CITIZENS GENERA Five years are up and this May 7th sees the UK head back to the polls once more for the General Election. As the parties’ campaigns get into gear, we asked you your feelings on the imminent election and on UK politics in general…
SAM | 21 | Shop Assistant If we trusted them more, I’d vote. I don’t see much of a difference between parties. They’ve got odd policies, but they all seem to be saying the same thing. It’s all hot air. When people get elected they never seem to do anything. No one’s giving any definitive answer. It’s very confusing. The only person I actually find interesting is Boris Johnson. CHRIS | 39 | Estate Agent If the ‘Ed and Ed Show’ get anywhere near power it’s going to be a disaster. We’ve been through five years of austerity, and now we’re finally heading in the right direction. Why would you go down one path towards improvement and then change tack? I’m not a Tory drum-banger, but they’re the best of a bad bunch. STEFAN | 62 | Artist I’m not really political but I don’t see much difference between the parties. I think it’s a question of voting for who you feel at the time, compared to which candidates have been around for a while.
LIZ | Boutique Owner I don’t know anything about politics! I know it should be important to me, but to be honest it isn’t. I suppose I think it’s not really going to affect me because I’m down here and [politics] is up there. Which is wrong, I know, but there’s nobody that I really want to vote for.

AL ELECTION 2015 Dave | 50 | Café & Deli Owner Like a lot people I shy away from politics. All I’m seeing is propaganda. Consequently, I don’t feel any allegiance to any party. They’ll give us all these promises and this time next year, none of them will have happened and we’re back to square one. That’s very cynical but that’s as far as I go with it.
Olivia | 25 | Shop Assistant I know the General Election is happening but I don’t know what it is that puts me off. I think politics should be taught more in schools. A lot of my friends are interested though, which makes me feel a bit thick, haha.
WITH 2015 SEEING A GENERAL ELECTION, WE OFFER SOME INFORMATION ON WHAT TO EXPECT IN SURREY ON MAY 7TH Why Vote?

SURREY SEARCH AND RESCUE BEGINS! by Will Knowlton Last month we introduced you all to our charity of 2015, Surrey Search and Rescue. The unit is a fairly new addition to The Association of Lowland Search and Rescue (ALSAR) family having only been formed in 2010. It was that year that Tim Rowsell discovered that many of the surrounding counties had established SAR teams who provided invaluable support to both their local constabularies and communities. The crux of the matter is this: local authorities struggle to provide manpower in searching for missing people, as well as providing an effective quick response to natural incidents like the floods in 2014. So why not establish a well-trained, motivated and effective Rescue team that could support the police during these events? Not for the first time Facebook, it seems, came to the rescue. A group page was created by Simon Jeffs and Kris Manning called “Let’s form a SAR team in Surrey”. It was not as easy as getting a group together, phoning the local nick and telling the Duty Sergeant that they were ready and able. There were standards to be met and exams to pass. Like all professionals, qualifications were needed; and that’s where ALSAR came in. As the national body it was their job to qualify the team and see to it that they were better than up to scratch. It was only once these criteria could be met that Surrey Search and Rescue would become operational. The team began to take shape and morph into an effective unit; this was recognised and they were quickly granted provisional status to join ALSAR. The inclusion of search dogs on the team gave a further asset and they were soon given full membership to Lowland Search Dogs. While all this essential assessment was on going the team were out cutting their teeth in searches as well as helping out across the county’s borders.
By late September the unit was taking shape nicely. They had taking part in 50 operations across the county and beyond. Moreover, the addition of two more qualified dogs and qualification of 12 Search Technicians brought the unit up to 38 members. As the end of Christmas loomed the team had taken part in over 60 searches and by the time decorations were being put away for another year up and down the county, Surrey Search and Rescue were assessed and given complete membership to ALSAR. The rest, as they say, is history…
HOW CAN I HELP? Surrey Search and Rescue rely entirely on volunteers, and as such there are many ways which you can help but for ease there are three main types of volunteer:
Volunteer Supporter The Volunteer Supporter assists the team by helping out at training sessions as well as fundraising events. All help is welcome.
Friend SurSAR Friends help out by performing administration duties in the day to day running of the team.
Search Team Member Joining the Search Team is a serious commitment and not to be taken lightly. The training is intense and as such will take up your time as well as money for travel and certain bits of equipment. If that’s fine then all the team asks is that you are physically in good shape (searches can last hours and will cover all the terrain that the 642 square miles of Surrey has to offer) as well as having a basic appreciation of navigation, first-aid and of course being a good communicator.

OUR HISTORY:
SILENT POOL BREAKS ITS SILENCE by Will Knowlton Tell me; have you ever been to Silent Pool? Nestling beside the A25, it’s a weird place; all perfectly still and quiet. The sort of place where hippies go to sharpen their chakras. Turns out there’s a (almost totally untrue) tale to be told about the place, featuring nudity and death; you’ve got to love Surrey’s ‘history’... Once upon a time there was a guy called Hal. Now before Hal put his name to psychotic computers, he lived in the woods between Guildford and Shere. This being the olden days, running the family was left to his eldest kids Emma and Tetbert (how much was he picked on at school for that parental gift?). Now, like a montage from a True Movies special, Emma grew up to be rather attractive. Locals and meandering folk would divert to the woods mainly so that they could get a drink of water and cop a look at Em. So not only did she look after the kids, do the ironing, the weekly shop and feed dad, she also had to fend off every dirty beggar in the county. Anyway, word of her looks made their way to members of Prince John’s hangers on. Clearly bored of visiting rickety ‘establishments’, John and his entourage organised a day trip. So the guys stopped for some water at Hal’s well and, recce done, went on their way planning to return for some more fun of the horizontal nature.
Next to Hal’s gaff was Shirebourne Pool which, being a quiet and secluded place, was where young Em would go to wash. One day, three riders appeared at Hal’s place. Two of the guys feigned interest in Hal’s woodwork and, ever eager to make a quid, Hal got straight on with the pitch. While he was gassing, he didn’t notice the third geezer slip off in the direction of the pool. This was no gentlemen - this was Prince John. Turns out Tetbert saw John ride off and, having spent the ma jority of his life watching over his sister, put 2 and 2 together and ran after John’s horse. Meanwhile, Emma was just paddling into the pool when the horseman approached. Grasping a nearby hanging branch to cover her dignity, she hoped the rider would miss her and ride on in the direction of the petrol station in Gomshall. However John had spotted her and rode his horse into the water towards her. Emma slowly waded backward, but she hadn’t noticed she was by the underwater shelf which dropped down 20ft. She slipped and went under - and started to drown. John, in a move that only solidifies his image that he was an absolute ******, got out of the pool, and started drying himself off. Enter Tetbert, who saw his sister drowning and jumped in. In the struggle Emma had got stuck on an underwater branch, but old Tetbert refused to let her go and, well… they both drowned. John went back to his friends, and Hal eventually went to check the pool. From that day to this, everything at the water was silent. The birds still don’t sing and there’s rarely a breeze to ripple the pool’s surface. Prince John: What a pr*ck.

TALKING TO..
SIMON AMSTELL
By Rich Lee
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment
ENTERTAINMENT
It’s been a long process to find out what was funny about me, and I think it’s simply that I’m an idiot. Following a sold out residency in New York, award-winning comedian, presenter, actor and screenwriter Simon Amstell is embarking on his fourth international stand up tour - ‘To Be Free’ and will appear at Guildford’s G Live on Friday 6th March… What are some of the themes that you talk about in your new show To Be Free? I will still be talking about myself so if anyone’s concerned that I won’t be they shouldn’t worry (laughs). But I think I became quite a bit happier a couple of years ago, so there was less misery to dissect in this show.
What brought this change about? I went on a bit of a journey when I ended two years of therapy with a trip to Peru where I drank ayahuasca and felt relatively healed. I felt comfortable in my own body for the first time. I felt I was completely free, but it turned out that there were still insecurities and fears of the culture that I’m in that means I can’t just do and say the things I want. So the show I’m bringing to Guildford is all about moments when I had the desire to be free and was thwarted or moments when I truly was free and alive but that caused problems. And then there’s the problem of being completely free in a moment with another human being - who may not necessarily enjoy you being as free as you are!
This is your fifth big tour. How has your comedy evolved since you began nearly twenty years ago? Well at first I didn’t know what I was doing; I was just throwing things at the wall and hoping for the best. And then I enjoyed magic mushrooms and that really opened me up; I became able to be on stage without fear. And then I went on a clown course in Paris and learned how to be vulnerable and joyful. It’s been a long process to find out what was funny about me, and I think it’s simply that I’m an idiot.
Isn’t that a good place to start though? Yeah I think so. To be curious and open and not know things is a more joyful and interesting place to be than to be rigid and have your opinions set in stone.
Which comedians inspired you? Eddie Izzard was the first comedian I really got into; I bought all his tapes and used to transcribe his routines to figure out how he formed his jokes. It didn’t really help (laughs.)
You spent a lot of time in the States recently. Do you feel like you’ve broken America? Not really. I was doing a residency in New York for two months, which was pure joy. But my ego kept nagging at me about where I’m going with it. But then a friend said to me, “You’re in New York, doing a show you’ve written every night and people are coming to see you. If you’re not happy now, you’ll never be happy.” So I’ve decided I’m only interested in the joy of performing, wherever I can do it.
What can audiences expect from your show at G Live? If they have seen me before, it will be like what they saw last time… but perhaps even funnier. But if they’ve never seen me before, they’ll be shocked – amazed! - at how funny a human being can be (laughs)!

TALKING TO...
Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers
By Joe Payne
Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers are the biggest act of their kind in the UK. We spoke to co-founder Miyuki Williams about what to expect ahead of their performance at the Guildford International Music Festival… Explain a bit about Taiko to those of us who may not know? Taiko drumming is originally from Japan; it’s been around for hundreds of years. In a traditional Shinto ceremony, Taiko drums would be played to call the attention of the gods. The Shinto religion consider that every living thing has a spirit, so the Taiko have spirits residing within them. Now it has developed into a more of a performing arts spectacle for an audience; and this kind of development has happened mainly since the 1950s.
nobody else doing this – we’re the longest serving Taiko group in the UK. Now there are lots of groups springing up. Taiko’s developing its own kind of British style and it’s really exciting to see!
Where do you draw your influences from? We just take on board lots of different ideas. We’re based in Central Scotland, so we have the Edinburgh Fringe Festival right on our doorstep. We go to as many shows as we possibly can to take on board different ideas about staging, lighting, choreography, show structure etc.
Tell us what we can expect from your performance at Guildford International Music Festival?
Our main source of study isn’t Taiko, it’s every other art form; we take particular inspiration from contemporary dance.
Taiko is a very visual and powerful art form; it’s highly choreographed with synchronised movements – people often liken it to dance or martial arts. We use a lot of special effects and it’s also fully costumed, so it really is a spectacle.
You’re performing at this year’s Guildford International Music Festival. Is this Mugenkyo’s first time here?
There’ll be a huge array of drum and percussion types specially imported from Japan. The huge Odaiko drum is about the size of a small car, is carved out of a single tree trunk and produces a very deep reverberating sound. The audience aren’t just listening to the Taiko drums, they’re actually feeling the rhythms go right through them. It’s very powerful.
What else do you have in store for the year ahead?
Do you feel Taiko’s popularity has increased in the UK? It’s really grown in popularity in the past 20 years – it’s still not as popular as in the States because there are a lot of second and third generation Japanese communities there; but we’ve seen a huge growth in popularity. 2014 was Mugenkyo’s 20th year anniversary, and when we first started there was basically
We’ve performed at GLive, but this was about 3 years ago now. But we haven’t been back so we’re really excited for our return visit. It’s a wonderful festival to be a part of.
Usually winter is really quiet for us, but in February we’re actually in India, then over to France. We have shows all over the world, several festivals in the summer and a ma jor UK tour in October - so it’s a busy year!
Mugenkyo Taiko Drums will be performing at The Electric Theatre in Guildford on Thursday 19th March as part of Guildford International Music Festival. Visit www.surrey.ac.uk/content/ way-drum to get tickets. Find out more at www.taiko.co.uk.

ELLIE KELLY OF BUTTONS CHILDRENS PARTIES IN FLEET GIVES US SOME INFORMATION ON AN EXCITING NEW CHILDREN’S PARTY IDEA... As with lots of things ‘party’, America is in the lead when it comes to new ideas and designs. Don’t panic though - us Brits are on their tail and coming up with some pretty fab creations of our own. As you can see, sweetie tables do not just have to have sweeties on; the trend now also includes displaying dessert items as well, including cookies, cupcakes, birthday cakes, smoothies and any other yummy sugar filled party nibbles you can think of. If you have a theme, then a Sweetie table can be an amazing statement piece for your party venue and create a real WOW factor for your guests, whether it’s big or small! This was a fab theme to work on - full of fun, mischief and bold colours. I sourced some yummy sweets to fit with the theme and displayed them with some Monster printables I found on Etsy. Sweets included, Super Sour Monster, White Chocolate mice, Snakes,
Worms, Gummy Teeth and Sherbet Straws. As well as looking and smelling rather nice, the Monster table was part of the children’s party gift. Everyone got a little bag to fill it to the brim with all the lovely sweeties before they went home. I was delighted with the end result and the children loved making up their own bags and getting mice from the monsters tongue. I just have to work on giving away the few sweets I came home with now rather than eating them!
More wonderful ideas, as well as party planning services can be found on Ellie’s website www.buttonschildrensparties.co.uk and to find out more call 01252 640874. Valentine's Day Dinner Peach Pavlova To be honest this is less of a recipe and more of a direction for assembly as we recommend, in order to keep this menu stress-free, you get pre-made meringue! If, however, you would like to try out making your own meringue then head over to our recipes page for guidance www.theguide2surrey/recipes
Method Ingredients
30
Circular meringue base 1 Packet of small meringue bites 1 pint whipping cream 2 tins of peaches in juice drained 3 ripe passion fruit
•
Place your meringue base onto a cake stand. You can use a plate but the stand really helps with the wow factor.
•
Using an electric hand whisk beat the cream in a bowl until it forms stiff peaks.
•
Spoon the cream into your base and spread it so that it is evenly distributed.
•
Spoon the peaches onto the cream and then scrape the passion fruit’s contents over the peaches.
•
Finally place some of the meringue bites on top of the fruit.

Beef Pie This pie is best when you have cooked the filling and allowed it to cool. We suggest you make the filling the night before so that you only have to assemble the pie the next day.
Ingredients
Whether you cook daily or you have no idea how to find your way around a supermarket, surely Valentine’s Day is your day to impress yourself and your loved one. To help you do just that, we have a wonderfully simple and satisfying menu for you so that you are not chained to the kitchen…
500g diced beef
2 tbsp olive oil
2 white onions
3 tbsp plain flour
2 carrots
1 ltr of beef stock
1 punnet of button mushrooms
1 bouquet garnet Salt and Pepper to season
1 packet of pre made puff pastry 1 egg beaten to glaze the pie Green beans
Method •
Pre heat your oven to 160C. Put the flour into a large bowl and season well with salt and pepper. Add the meat and mix it until all the pieces are covered in the flour.
stock if needed. •
Once cooked place aside to cool. Turn your oven up to 200C.
•
Heat the oil in a heavy based oven proof casserole dish over a medium to high heat.
•
Take your pie dish and grease the edge with butter. Put your filling into the dish.
•
Add the meat in batches and brown all over. Once browned place the meat on a plate. Add some more oil if necessary and then add the onions and carrots and stir for around 2-3 minutes. At this stage add any leftover flour and mix well.
•
Flour the work surface and roll out your pastry until it is about 1/2cm thick. Then place it over your pie dish.
•
Turn off the heat and add the meat back into the pan. Now add the stock and the bouquet garnet and place the lid onto the pan.
Use a knife to cut round the edge of the dish and discard the unwanted pastry. Press down the edges and cut a small whole in the middle of the lid to let out the steam.
•
Place the casserole dish into the oven and cook for 3 hours until the meat is tender. Check around the half way mark and add additional

Fair Trade Fortnight takes place between 23rd February and 8th March, an event that aims to educate the public on why they should choose Fairtrade products, which include everything from bananas to gold. The success of the organisation since the launch of its first event in 1995 is unquestioned; 78% of the UK public now recognise the FAIRTRADE Mark. Surrey boasts numerous Fairtrade Towns, but is yet to achieve the honour of Fairtrade County status; but they’re close, dear reader. If you know of a business that can stock their products, get them involved – let’s make Surrey a Fairtrade County! Visit www.surreyfairtrade.org.uk for more info.

JON DIBBEN JEWELLERY
from the younger generation, who can continue to spread the message. “I am very proud to be an independent design business, with all our work available in Fairtrade gold, and in the space of just over 3 years, almost half the pieces in the shop are made in this special, ethical metal. For us it just completes the circle – we can honestly say that we know everything about our jewellery, from the design and craftsmanship, to the materials.
Cranleigh-based Jon Dibben Jewellery is one of the pioneers of bringing ethically sourced gold to this country. Here he tells us what Fairtrade Fortnight means to him… “I think it’s very impressive that we have so many towns in Surrey that have Fairtrade status – Guildford obviously, as well as Dorking, Godalming and Cranleigh among others. “The fact that people are working so hard to try and get Surrey county status is great too, but all these groups could do with input
“I also think that it’s fantastic that magazines like this are championing independents who work with Fairtrade materials and products. You don’t often hear about these kind of companies. Lots of them are working in an incredibly sustainable way, which should be encouraged.” More info can be found at jondibben.co.uk. SPORTS NEWS FIT FOR LIVING FREE TASTER SESSIONS
ALPINE SNOWSPORTS CENTRE, ALDERSHOT
Surrey Sports Park | 7th February
We’re still in winter (they never end, do they?) and yet we do not have the means to ski down real slopes in Southern England. Enter Alpine Snowsports Centre in Aldershot.
Guildford’s Surrey Sports Park once again excel themselves with this event on Saturday 7th February. A whole array of sporting events for those with mild to moderate chronic health conditions, today is all about encouraging a fitter and healthier lifestyle. If you suffer from asthma, obesity, arthritis, stress or depression – plus other physical and mental health conditions – this will be a day out in a friendly, welcoming environment with others in a similar situation. Spinning, swimfit, walking basketball and football, table tennis and lots more will be on offer. Find out more at www.surreysportspark.co.uk.
If you ski or ‘board (duuuuuude), then this is the place for you. There are three slopes at the Centre, each with their own lift, mist system and floodlights. There’s also a small ski shop on site for those last minute accessories. Tip: come and use the slopes on a snowy day. Skis, snowboards and donuts all go like bullets. Pray for the white stuff to fall… So if you’d like to bomb it downhill on a slope once graced by Chemmy Alcott and Eddy “the Eagle” Edwards, then Aldershot is where to head! www.alpinesnowsports.co.uk
BRUTAL BAGSHOT Bagshot | 14th February Brutal runs are difficult. Lengthy runs that are uphill, down dale and through water, this is a tough race for competitive runners. A great way to spend Valentine’s Day then! The Brutal Run in Bagshot is a two lapped hilly and very wet 10km course. It’s called the Alpine Circuit for a reason (i.e. bring waterproofs…) There are prizes to be had, but this is all about the competition folks. Get stretching… Entry £18 | brutalrun.co.uk
NEED FOR SPEED BOOT CAMP Guildford Spectrum | 15th February Want to boost your skating prowess? Then this is for you… With over 20 years skating experience along with international inline hockey experience, James from Skate Britain is pretty darn fast and an excellent coach. Come to the Guildford Spectrum and learn the art of speed, and backwards skating. In the Need For Speed class, whether you’re a beginner or looking to master backwards crossovers and weaving, this is where to achieve your goals… Cost: £15 | skatebritain.net
SURREY HALF MARATHON Start | Finish Woking Leisure Centre | 7th March Yes it’s not until March, but this is a final call for those wishing to enter. Sign up to raise money for charity or just to improve your general wellbeing (NB – we recommend doing both…) Running a shade over 13 miles through the Surrey countryside on an early spring day is marvellous, but make sure you check out the website to sign up, find out more and make sure stay ahead of road closures and the like… surreyhalfmarathon.co.uk

FEBRUARY 2015
SURREY STORM With the start of the season drawing ever closer, the anticipation and excitement for the start of the Netball Super League rises on a daily basis. Expectation levels are at their peak for Surrey Storm, however, following an impressive previous campaign – a campaign that sadly ended in bitter disappointment in the Grand Final. This year the Storm have added new blood to their ranks, the most notable addition being England’s Pamela Cookey, who returns to Surrey Sports Park following a three-year absence.
Coach Tamsin Greenway has worked tirelessly with her team throughout the off-season to ensure this year ends in silverware, rather than despair (unintentional rhyme, there). Arguably Storm’s stand-out fixture of the season comes when they host the Hertfordshire Mavericks for London Live 2015 at the home of English netball, The Copper Box. Greenway said: “To be able to say that Surrey Storm is part of the biggest ever domestic netball match in the country makes me proud as a player and a fan of the sport!”
WITH OVER 3,300 TICKETS ALREADY SOLD, IT’S ALREADY SURE TO BE A RECORDBREAKING SUPER LEAGUE EVENING AND HERE AT THE GUIDE TO SURREY, WE ARE GIVING YOU A CHANCE TO BE THERE! VISIT WWW.THEGUIDE2SURREY.COM FOR COMPETITION DETAILS.
SURREY UNITED Could a last gasp winner against Durham Wildcats be the catalyst to turn Jack Ma jewski’s side’s fortunes around? United, despite improving drastically from the last campaign, had struggled to pick up wins prior to the Wildcats fixture, losing their previous on the bounce, but a last-gasp Kramer Knutson three-pointer to make the score 80-78 lifted them off the foot of the table and raised spirits around the camp. 6ft 9” Knutson, who joined the United roster in the summer from London Lions, has been hugely influential for the team this season, with his form sure to be a factor in their bid to reach the play-offs. Captain Elvisi Dusha’s step-up in form has also been a key factor to an improved United this season, scoring crucial points at crucial moments and
improving his defence work, getting steals and rebounds and running in transition. With important games against Leeds Force and Bristol Flyers still to come, United staff and fans alike will be keen to push on from this win and gather momentum going into the second-half of the campaign – a campaign that we hope will end in glory! SURREY SMASHERS Badminton Commonwealth Games medallist Chris Langridge and his team mates have really taken their ‘smashers’ nickname literally. Having hammered Milton Keynes 4-1 in their opening fixture of the campaign, they went on to beat Loughborough 3-2 in a thrilling first home game of the season. The aforementioned victories see Smashers sitting pretty at the top of the National Badminton League, one point above second placed Birmingham Lions – who they meet on the final game day of the season at Surrey Sports Park on April 28th. Soraya De Visch Eijbergen – part of Smashers’ Dutch contingent – described Surrey’s recent victory over Loughborough as “The best win of her career”. Loughborough Sport looked to heading for their first win of the campaign after producing some brilliant winners to force a decider. But Langridge and Dean George forced the Loughborough pair into some late errors at the net before coming through in the thrilling tiebreak.
At the time of writing, the Smashers were gearing up for their sell out home tie on January 26th vs Derby at Surrey Sports Park, who have proved to be a decent outfit at times this campaign. Langridge and his side will be keen to keep the momentum going, however, as they seek to reign victorious come the maiden NBL season’s end in April. Surrey’s badminton elite are certainly smashing it in terms of attendance figures at their home games this year. Be part of the action and don’t miss out on their final home game of the season against Birmingham Lions on the 27th April. GET TICKETS NOW VIA WWW.SURREYSMASHERS.CO.UK
