Talking to... ROBERT NEWMAN

by Rich Lee On Friday 19th and Saturday 20th September, Robert Newman brings his critically acclaimed New Theory of Evolution show to G-Live. Rich Lee caught up with the comic to discuss taking back Darwin and giant, floating slugs...

Your successful 2006 stage show, the History of Oil, explored geopolitics and the looming threat of peak oil. With your New Theory of Evolution, how do you manage to make such dense and serious subjects funny? I think the difficult thing is to get laughs out of the usual stale, trite fare. When you tackle complexity then there is a wealth of detail, oodles of oddity which lend themselves to comedy. And natural history is so full of freaky facts, such as the communities of social amoeba that come together in times of food shortage to form a giant slug which then turns into a sticky bit which then releases a balloon that flies to where there is more food, which, in their case, is decaying bark full of bacteria… Do you think contemporary comedians could be doing more to address important issues? The great pity is that they do. They address important issues from a deplorably reactionary point of view.

Robert Newman performs his ‘New Theory of Evolution’ show at Guildford’s G Live on Friday 19th September and Saturday 20th September. Tickets available from the box office at www.3.hants.gov.uk/westendcentre. Visit www.robnewman.com for more Newman news.

Does your New Theory of Evolution have a specific target in mind? The show is, on one level, an anti-Dawkins polemic. One plank of my New Theory of Evolution is that there’s as much cooperation as competition in nature. Darwin thought so too. But Darwin’s theory of evolution has been hijacked by a reductive ideology that has left people with a narrow, pessimistic view of human nature and of society. There’s a strong Vaudevillian aesthetic that weaves through much of your image and material. Where does your affinity for that particular era come from? Yes, the show has got a few Victorian references, or at least late nineteenth century ones. There’s Darwin of course, and a bit set in the 1880s about the Russian geologist Prince Kropotkin -a dead ringer for the singer from Fleet Foxes- who escaped from a Tsarist prison and wrote Mutual Aid a Factor In Evolution. You play a mean ukulele. Ever thought of becoming a musical recording artist? As Joe Strummer once said, ‘Know Your Limits.’

100 YEARS of

MOVIE POSTER HISTORY On Sale at Ewbank’s this Month Some of the most iconic and collectable movie posters will be going on sale at Ewbank’s auctioneers on Tuesday 30th September. Ewbanks, one of the UK’s leading regional auctioneers will be selling almost 700 posters promoting some of the most influential and memorable movies in cinema’s history. The sale will also be broadcast live on the internet with real-time bidding provided by LiveAuctioneers.com and the-saleroom.com, enabling collectors and dealers to participate from all over the world. The posters have been collected over a lifetime by a US collector who was devoted to creating a unique record of Hollywood’s golden era of film. Forming one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of all time, the posters have been consigned to sale, the collector said: “This auction honours such acting greats as Alec Guinness, James Mason, Rex Harrison, Margaret Leighton, Laurence Olivier, Richard Burton and Stewart Granger. “The posters on offer will appeal both to collectors in the 50 to 80 age group with

famous English and American actors and films that they will remember watching in their youth, as well as the new, upcoming generation of collectors who want something more than the usual diet of Star Wars, Hitchcock, Bond, McQueen, and Hammer.” Curating and cataloguing this treasure trove is Ewbank’s Entertainment and Memorabilia specialist Alastair McCrea, who said: “It is a great privilege for Ewbank’s to have been entrusted to sell this collection, the scope of which is unprecedented. Its appeal to collectors on both sides of the Atlantic will be considerable and it is a personal honour for me to be handling it.” For further information on the 30th September Auction, please visit www.ewbankauctions.co.uk or contact the auctioneers on 01483 223101 or antiques@ewbankauctions.co.uk.

The Artist and Makers Festival Guildford-based culture vultures the Artists and Makers Guild are hosting their first ever festival at Holy Trinity Church on Saturday 20th September…

A

s you will surely be aware, The Guide 2 Guildford likes to champion the independent. Be it a business, an event or an idea, we love to support it. And this is why we’re such fans of the Artists and Makers Guild, a group of creative individuals who thought, in their own words, “…how great it would be if there was a more grass-roots venue that celebrated the arts and the individual maker, and perhaps where artists could meet and exchange ideas.” So they put their plans into action… Despite not having a permanent home, the AMG (as we shall abbreviate them to) endeavour to promote some of the extraordinary – and perhaps lesser known – talent that Surrey and the South-East has to offer. They may be tucked away in workshops and studios, but the AMG’s aim is to get these works seen by the general public. Now, it’s all come to fruition and the first ever Artists and Makers Festival comes to Guildford on the 20th September. Taking place at the aesthetically gorgeous Holy Trinity Church – a wholly suitable venue, we’re sure you’ll agree – this will be an exciting gathering of Artists, Designers and Makers from a broad mix of disciplines. Each exhibitor will be handpicked for the festival, so you can be assured of their originality and quality. As well as all of this creative showcasing, there will also be a Café with delicious home-made food and a selection of drinks. There will also be live music from some of Guildford’s up and coming bands, and those with a penchant for knitting and gossiping will be able to partake in a stitch ‘n’ bitch. Your typical village craft fair this is not…

The Artists and Makers Festival is at the Holy Trinity Church from 10am – 5pm on Saturday 20th September. Entry is £2. For more information visit artistsandmakersguild.co.uk.

Welcome to As community radio pioneers Kane FM 103.7 begin broadcasting from their new home at the University of Surrey’s Student Union this month, we spoke to Mr Fame himself, Ian Handy, about his station’s journey from pirate crew to the latest kids on campus…

K

ane FM’s roots reach back to the late 1980s but truly began life as pirate radio station N Joi FM in the late 90s, broadcasting out of a tiny garden shed in Guildford. In 2011 they were awarded legal status as a not-for-profit community radio station, one of only three pirate stations in the UK to be approved by regulators Ofcom. Since then Kane FM 103.7 has been broadcasting independent, underground bass music to Surrey and Hampshire while gaining a devoted following far beyond the borders of those two

counties. “You can’t go anywhere in the country where someone hasn’t heard of Kane FM,” says Director Ian Handy, aka Mr Fame, with pride.

P

rior to the station’s relocation, Kane FM had been operating out of property owned by the Lockwood Centre in Slyfield, Guildford. But when the premises began to fall short of the station’s requirements, an opportunity presented itself from an idea hatched between Ian and the University of Surrey’s Student Union CEO, Alan Sutherland.

Centre have made to Kane FM, they have been the most incredible allies and friends to us and without them Kane FM wouldn’t be here today. But this new move lifts everybody involved with the project. We’ve gone from a shed, to a glorified shed to a real building with a shiny new studio, professionally built with everything we’ve learnt, on a campus surrounded by

“I’ve known Alan for over fifteen years,” explains Ian. “He had an itch he wanted to scratch and he came to check out the project which had been going for just over two years. He wanted the Union and Kane FM to connect directly, to give young people a megaphone with which to speak their voice. We asked, ‘how could this University on the Hill connect with the community and young people?’ “We can’t understate the contribution that the Lockwood

B

ut what of the Union’s current student station? Stag Radio was one of the first student radio stations to be given a license over forty years ago, so it was important for both parties to establish Kane FM as an independent station on the campus. “We’re really pleased

that Kane FM are coming to the University; it’s a natural fit,” says Alan Sutherland. “But Kane FM and Stag Radio are two very different things. We know they’ll co-exist and we’ll have students get involved with both. They’ll rub along very well together.”

I

n their new home, Ian plans to continue Kane FM’s commitment to serving the community, particularly youth. “We have over 150 volunteers so we’re one of the largest voluntary organisations in Surrey, although we don’t shout about that much. Last year twenty-two kids from all sorts of backgrounds passed through Kane FM, where they have the opportunity to get a certificate from the Arts Awards

with as many young people as possible and make sure music is represented fairly across the FM spectrum. We don’t just serve Guildford; we serve a music community, people who like independent music, who are slightly against the grain. We represent the little guy.”

the new opportunities the location offers. “We’d already installed a live connection between the Rubix club and Kane FM studio, so this will mean far more live broadcasts from the venue in future with more big label events. We hope it would also mean people coming from outside to visit the Union, which has traditionally been quite a closed campus.”

Our Citizens:

Becoming 18 For many, turning 18 is perceived as ‘coming of age’ – when adolescence ends and the adult world opens up before us.

But is turning 18 really significant? Does it actually make a difference to people’s lives, their self-image and their outlook? We sent our intrepid work experience team, Beth Roberts (17) and Justin Rowland (17), out on the streets to put these questions to you, the citizens…

FRANK AND PAT “Drinking wasn’t a big deal because we had been drinking for the past few years and times have changed a lot since then. For us 21 was the bigger landmark. We didn’t really celebrate becoming 18, it was more 21. But being able to vote was a big deal.

ALEX “It kind of was, my birthday was in August so most of my friends were already 18. So it was more of a convenience because we could all go out together. We’d already been doing it for a while but it was difficult. So that was the only thing but apart from that it wasn’t a huge deal. I thought about voting more when the election actually came which was about 2 years after that I think. But at the time I didn’t think too much about that.”

previous which is probably the norm in this country. I looked older anyway so getting drink was easy. Voting wasn’t crucial either.

“Drinking was a big thing I guess but we’d been doing it before that. However it was good to actually go out to the bars and clubs with your mates. Voting was important too.

Natasha and Chloe “It’s not that much of a big deal actually turning 18 but going out and clubbing is definitely a benefit. I think 17 is better because you can learn to drive which gives you more freedom.”

was doing when I turned 18, I remember having a party! Had all my family around. It was good to be drinking and obviously it opened a lot of doors. It was nice to have the choice of voting. Having the option meant I paid a lot more attention to it.”

BARRY “It was a bit of a blur to me I was

just drunk all of the time! Being able to go to bars and clubs legally was a benefit for sure.”

Our Citizens: IS BECOMING 18 STILL A BIG DEAL? With their own eighteenth birthdays just months away, what do our two reporters think?

NO

YES

Justin

Beth

One of the most significant and important things for people turning 18 is the right to buy alcohol legally. But for many young people in this country that is not a significant change. Yes, it will be easier to get a hold of it but it doesn’t change the fact that, for 15 year olds plus, getting hold of alcohol is already pretty easy, apart from in a pub or bar or similar establishment.

One of the most important responsibilities that arises when you become 18 is the responsibility to vote! We finally get a say in the government, however daunting that may seem. We don’t have to listen to our parents’ opinions about voting, drinking or what we do on a Saturday night we can do whatever we want!

Another so-called benefit of turning 18 is that you’re at the legal age to become ‘free’ from your parents, something many of us have been looking forward to our whole lives. But does that really change anything? You’re still likely to be living under the same roof as them but the only difference is that they can legally chuck you out!! That definitely seems like a negative to me. Furthermore, many people believe that the second you turn 18 is the time you become an ‘adult’ and have to ‘act your age’. I don’t know about you, but most of the adults I see act as if they’re still 18 when most of them are twice, or even four times that! I’m sure I’ll be acting like an immature ‘youth’ for a good few years more, despite being considered an ‘adult’.

“You’re still likely to be living under the same roof as them but the only difference is that they can legally chuck you out!! ‘“

This even extends to buying a house (for all you lucky well-off teens) or getting married! This means that you have the opportunity to start a family, move as far away from your parents as possible or even just run off to Vegas and get hitched! There’s also the prospect of university the chance to become enthralled in a subject and to live it up student style. Alternatively, we can get a variety of jobs that we couldn’t get before (e.g. some pub or bar work) and the minimum wage for 18 year olds is higher than that for younger ages. Never mind paid work, we can even get some work experience that we couldn’t before - this is great if, for example, you want to go into some form of publishing or psychology. I’m looking forward to the easy purchase of alcohol, people treating me like a sophisticated adult and the immense amount of choices I can make.

“THIS MEANS you have the opportunity to start a family, move as far away from your parents as possible or even just run off to Vegas and get hitched!”

SEPTEMBER 2014 COMMUNITY

Phyllis Tuckwell: Last month we met the Hospice Care at Home Team who extend the Hospice’s renowned palliative care out in the community. Mandi Garwood is an auxiliary nurse at the Hospice who also works with the Care at Home Team. But here she tells us why she’s truly passionate about working on the ward itself.

by Rich Lee

THE NURSE’S STORY M

andi has been a nurse for sixteen years and has spent twelve of those nursing patients at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham. Originally from South West London, Mandi began working for Age Concern but it was her mother’s cancer that first brought her to the Hospice. “When my Mum was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue in 2001 she was still young and it was quite rare then. She was referred to Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice but she didn’t want to come because she felt so self-conscious about her condition, as do many patients. “She died in June 2002 and that was the first time I stepped through these doors, to collect the death certificate. The next time was three months later, on her birthday, when I came for a job interview at the Hospice.”

M

andi recognises that some people may have preconceptions about what the Hospice actually does. “When I first moved to Farnham, Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice was thought of as somewhere you came to and didn’t leave. But things have changed a lot over the years. Our numbers of turnarounds are quite

good; many patients have come here for terminal care but we’ve managed to get them to a level where they’ve been able to go into a nursing home or even back to their own homes.”

A

longside a team of regular and part-time nurses, she treats the patients in the In Patient Unit (IPU), a fully equipped medical unit that has eighteen beds, including ten single rooms seven of which are en-suite. A typical day involves tending to the patient’s hygiene and wellbeing, providing meals and generally ensuring that the patient’s feel relaxed and well cared for. “It’s much calmer than a general hospital and our ratio of nurses to patients is a lot higher. When the bells ring they’re answered straight away whether they need a drink or something to eat or just a chat. It’s just a really relaxed environment and you’re even allowed flowers and pets which aren’t permitted in other hospitals.”

T

he staff are supported by the Hospice’s many devoted volunteers, people who come from all walks of life to help the

Hospice’s patients in any way they can. “Volunteers are so important to the Hospice. There are many young people who volunteer, perhaps as part of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme or for their medical training. And there are retirees who just love to help.”

D

espite her years of service to the Hospice, Mandi admits that the work can take its toll. “It can be emotionally draining. There may be some patients who come in and then go so quickly, you don’t get the chance to build a relationship with them. It can be upsetting, but the support of the team is essential.”

U

ltimately though, it’s the rewarding nature of her work and the care which the Hospice offers that makes it all worthwhile for her. “I’ve always loved the ward, it’s my passion. I never get out of bed in the morning and wish I didn’t have to go to work. I love the patients and everybody I work with. It’s an honour to work with our patients. The stories they tell you are brilliant. You know you’re doing something for people. I can’t see myself working anywhere else.”

OUR HISTORY:

The Dragon of Clandon What is History? Sometimes it’s fact, sometimes it’s fiction, and that’s what makes it fun, doesn’t it? Well, here we are in an age where the only fantasy is on TV and nestled in the incognito window of our browsers. But it wasn’t always that way.

T

here once was a soldier, who we’ll call Bob, who had fought in so many battles he was starting to go a wee bit loopy. So loopy in fact that one morning, he awoke in his tent and just couldn’t face another day of chopping and lopping. So he did what many would do in that situation: he deserted. He knew the risk. Were he to have been caught as he wound his way back home, he was likely to be slammed in the clink, slapped about a fair bit and then finally executed for, presumably, being a wimp. Instead, Bob spent his days hiding in ditches and caves, dodging soldiers and generally trying to stay alive. The wimp. His main form of sustenance was food that people had thrown out and it was this enterprise that lead him to meet his loyal new companion. Whilst out “shopping” for dinner he found some cooked bones with a little meat still left on them. “Ooo!” thought Bob, “it’s been ages since I’ve had a roast” and he reached for them only to have them snatched at by a dog. The two tussled for a while but then, realising the futility -and perhaps also where he’d gotten to in life Bob laughed, gave up and let the dog have the bones. When the dog had finished his meal he began to follow Bob on his travels. But then one

day, as he came upon Clandon, Bob was caught, processed, given access to a duty lawyer and put in the nick without his canine friend for company. It was in jail that Bob started to hear tale of a Dragon that was terrorising West Clandon. Being an enterprising sort of a guy he offered to kill the dragon in return for his freedom. The magistrates scoffed at first but then the Mayor’s cow went missing and that was that. Armed with that most sophisticated of weapons, a bayonet, Bob set off like a mouse to challenge an elephant. In a field known as Deadacre, he chanced upon a gigantic pile of dragon dung. Knowing he was close to his fearsome prey he stood in the middle of the field, his bayonet at the ready, and cried: “Dragon, where are you? I have come to find you!” Now the Dragon, let’s call him Errol, was a nasty beast with huge claws, fangs and a severe hatred for men in sandals. Errol lunged at Bob, Bob bobbed and jabbed his blade into Errol’s flank. Nothing happened. Sensibly, Bob legged it for the relative safety of a nearby bush.

Then, out of leftfield, something came at the dragon and hit it hard upside the head. Bosh! This toppled Errol over revealing his pulsing heart beneath his scaly skin. Bob thrust the bayonet through the heart and Errol was no more. What had saved him? The dog of course! The two were reunited and the people of West Clandon showered Bob and Mutt with thanks and ale. True story? His story; History. See, it’s that easy…

SEPTEMBER 2014

Mum’s the word Thinking About University? It may be a jolly good laugh while you’re there, but applying is arguably the tough bit. Here, independent education consultant Liz Kirk gives some tips… If you’re thinking about going to university in 2015 and are just about to start Year 13, there a few things you’ll need to do this term. If you’re applying to any course at Oxford or Cambridge and for all Veterinary Medicine/ Science, Dentistry or Medicine courses, you’ll need to be a tad more organised and have your application into UCAS by 15th October 2014.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

For all applicants, think about what you want to study at university. Where do your passions and expertise lie? Once this is decided, which universities offer the right sort of courses for you…? The content and structure of a course Just because you like cats doesn’t mean you should be a vet. Would you like it each year? Or does your interest fade the further into it you get?

Core and optional modules What would you have to study and do you like the options? Or does ‘Understanding Governance’ make you shudder?

Opportunities to study abroad Think about how this could benefit your future and career, not just about how much fun it would be…

Reputation of each university Check the league table ranking, and more importantly graduate prospects and student satisfaction with the course you might apply to do. Look at unistats.com!

Visit university open days Go to as many as possible. Be sure to check out your department, and ask lots of questions about the course; refrain from simply looking up local bars.

Distance from home and transport links Could you get back home easily? Do you want to be able to?

How you will be assessed at each stage of the course

Think about first year accommodation

Are you better at exams? Perhaps don’t go for a heavily coursework based choice.

Do people stay on campus at weekends or go home? Where would be a good location? Some university campuses are deserted at the weekends…

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Family

Check out what needs to be completed before and during your application Will there be additional entry tests or submitted work? Will you be interviewed?

Start working on your Personal Statement early Check out on relevant university websites what they want to read from applicants. Your interests and experiences may well be of interest; your views on Justin Bieber, not so much.

What interests you now, why, and what do you want to learn more about, are just some of the points that are good to include If you aren’t sure what to write, do ask for advice! And that goes for all of the above too – if you are unsure about anything, be sure to ask. It’s a big decision…

FAMILY

Following on from these things to consider, start building up a crib sheet of why you want to study your chosen course at university, and why you think you would be the right applicant for a university to select. What interests you now, why, and what do you want to learn more about, are just some of the points that are good to include - if you aren’t sure what to write, do ask for advice! And that goes for all of the above too – if you are unsure about anything, be sure to ask. It’s a big decision…

WHERE TO EAT: Olivo

1997 was the year that Fulvio and Nicky Bertani opened their love letter to little Italy halfway up Quarry Street, giving birth to a cherished foodie spot in the process. Indeed, for we that have lived and worked in Guildford for many years, it’s hard to imagine the town without good ol’ Olivo.

pink blush in the middle, this handsome slab of fish would put a rib eye to shame in the heartiness stakes.

Cosy as a cottage thanks to low, timber beams that date the building back to its 1660’s origins, yet hardly lacking in style, Olivo is a warm, friendly place that can be enjoyed for any kind of meal, be it a quick bite over business or a long, languid afternoon outside on the terrace. But it’s a place that feels custom-fit for romantics seeking intimate dining in a restaurant oozing with character.

Sat on a bed of crushed potatoes, a liberal dusting of crumbed pistachios, parsley and dill really perfumed the dish.

Olivo is most popular, of course, with those seeking authentic, delicious Italian food. So it was with two starters that exemplified this cuisine’s unfussy fondness for great ingredients and flavours. There were skewers of meaty swordfish and juicy prawns drizzled in herby olive oil and a plate of cured, sliced and salty duck breast over a salad of roasted vegetables. Good, simple, clean flavours to kick off a meal. But where the starters were light and nimble, mains were generous to the point of being intimidating – in a good way. Take the tuna steak. Chargrilled to a nice

Across from this a Tagliata di Manzo – a 10oz scotch sirloin steak – was all chunks of beefy loveliness, juicy pink and dripping and tumbled over an olive wood board. An absolutely outstanding onion, mushroom and mustard sauce, when dribbled over the meat and running into the juices, was too good for words. Apart from one: utterly delicious. Okay that was two. Desserts don’t deviate from the expected and that’s fine. There are gelatos by the scoopful, but a lovely pear and almond tart was a pre-emptive autumn hug and a pannacotta spiked with limoncello was silky smooth and simply spot on. The secret of Olivo’s success and longevity is clear: 17 years serving unpretentious yet superb Italian food with warm, easy service in a dining space as homey and inviting as they come, all at great value to the customer... well, how do you say ‘no-brainer’ in Italian?

FOOD & DRINK

SEPTEMBER 2014

Spice up September is a notoriously fickle month; only time will tell if we’ll be toasting an Indian summer or plugging in the slow cooker. In these uncertain times I take comfort in the guaranteed heat provided by something nice and spicy. Of course if we do get lucky and the sun continues to shine just pop the chops on the BBQ and serve with couscous and some cooling yogurt.

Quick cOcOnut curry Serves 2

IngredIents 

2 spring onions

1/2 red chilli 2 inch piece of ginger, peeled and roughly chopped

1 clove of garlic

Juice of 1 lime

A large bunch of coriander

Stir fry oil

50g creamed coconut

100g raw jumbo king prawns

2tbsp frozen peas

6 cherry tomatoes

MetHOd 1. Blend the spring onions, chilli, ginger, garlic, lime juice, coconut and coriander stalks together in a food processor to form a rough paste. 2. Heat 1tsp of stir fry oil in a non stick frying pan, add the paste and stir fry on a medium heat for 3 minutes. 3. Add 200ml of boiling water and simmer for 5 minutes before adding the frozen prawns and cherry tomatoes. Once the prawns have turned pink add the frozen peas and roughly chopped coriander leaves. 4. Serve with ribbon noodles or rice, although this also works very well with the sweet potato mash (sounds odd but give it a go!)

FOOD & DRINK

Ginspiration By Sarah Cook

“When a man is tired of London Gin, he is tired of life.” I can only assume that this is the sentiment Samuel Johnson was trying to get across in his now much quoted love letter to the capital, for if there is one thing above all others that I am grateful to London for, well its Gin. Gin is having something of a moment, with independent and boutique gin brands popping up all over the place. Indeed the next time you need to restock why not try Beckett’s Gin, which is made using handpicked juniper berries from Box Hill in Surrey and mint grown in Kingston-upon-Thames, as well as a range of other botanicals including Moroccan lime and Spanish orange peel.

Pomegranate Gintini 

1 shot of Gin

1/2 shot Cointreau

The juice of 1 lime

100ml pomegranate juice

Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a lime wedge. Relax. Rhubarb Baked in Sloe Gin Serves 4 If you have been gifted a bottle of sloe gin and aren’t sure what to do with it, look no further. Sloe gin is a great match for fruit, and if you don’t fancy rhubarb this approach works equally well with just about any stone in fruit, particularly plums and damsons. Ingredients: 

400g rhubarb, cut into 5cm lengths

2 oranges, segmented

6tbsp sloe gin

Preheat the oven to 180oc/160 fan/gas mark 4. Put the fruit and gin in an ovenproof dish, cover with foil and back for 20 minutes. At this point the rhubarb should be soft to the touch. Leave to cool, serving at room temperature with lightly whipped cream. Any leftovers make a great breakfast, served with natural yoghurt or stirred into creamy porridge.

SkinCeuticals Glycolic Peel at Azzinga T

ucked away down Quarry Street in Guildford town centre, Azzinga Beauty Clinic is perfectly placed for high street shoppers to dive in for a quick beautifying splurge… Azzinga offer advanced facials, 3D Lipo Body Sculpting, anti-wrinkle treatments, massages, manicures, male grooming, permanent hair removal and SkinCeuticals Peel Treatments. After a long summer of slathering on the sunscreen, after sun and oils, skin can be in need of a little detoxification. The SkinCeuticals Peel Treatments offered at Azzinga are individually tailored to meet your skin’s needs. I went in for a Glycolic Peel in the hope that once the dead, clogged up cells were removed a fresh layer of smooth healthy skin would be revealed. A cleanser and toner were first applied to prepare my skin for the peel and begin the exfoliation process. With a pleasant tingle these first products felt like a breeze of mountain air had been gently blown over my face. Next the glycolic peel solution was applied and a three-minute countdown began. With a prickly, almost burning sensation I must admit this part was a little uncomfortable. However, I was assured that if the discomfort got too much to bear the process could be instantly stopped. So heeding my therapist’s advice, I lay back and let the peel work its magic. As soon as the three minutes was up a peel neutraliser instantly relieved my skin as it removed the solution. Up until this point the experience had, as you might imagine from a chemical peel, been fairly clinical. But from this point on my remaining time in the therapy room drifted past in leisurely luxury. After a toner an orange blossom essential oil mask with pure Vitamin C was massaged over my face, neck and shoulders to brighten, hydrate and repair the skin, whilst balancing out the pH levels. During the 15 minutes the mask was left on I was

given a shoulder, arm and hand massage which, combined with the sweet aroma of essential oils, relaxed my mind and body. Warm mitts were used to wipe away the mask before a nourishing serum, repairing eye cream and SPF moisturiser were applied. After the treatment I was advised to avoid direct sunlight for two days and use an SPF of at least 30 every day for a week. I left the beauty clinic with radiant skin that felt cleaner and softer than I have ever experienced and Azzinga’s No1 Tip to combat the signs of ageing, “Always use an SPF!” I was given a tester bottle of SkinCeuticals Brightening UV Defence SPF 30, a lightweight and hydrating formula that protects against UVA and UVB rays and helps to even out skin tone. Two weeks on and my skin has maintained the radiance I left the clinic with. A happy customer.

TEST DUMMY: Aussie Rules Football Taking over test dummy duties from Will Knowlton this month is student Justin Rowland, a keen rugby player who was just as keen to try his hand at the mad game known as Aussie Rules Football. I’ve always been the type of person to try different or ‘indie’ sports (if there is such a thing). I’ve played ice hockey, baseball, water polo and even a bit of BMX racing. So when the opportunity arises to try something new I jump at the chance. As I’m sure many of you are aware, there is actually more

by Justin Rowland

kicking around a red coloured oval ball, but the fact that they were wearing vests and shorts. Apparently this is the normal attire for the sport in Australia… After being greeted by the team (a large team – 18 a side) I already felt as if this was the kind of sport for me; particularly as this is a full contact sport. As a keen rugby player I knew I would get to grips with that part very easily. Aussie Rules is best described to us northern hemisphere folk as a mix between football and rugby. The goal is to kick the ball through two big posts at either end of a huge oval, you can run with the ball as long as you

“It involves a lot of kicking and an awful (and I mean awful) lot of running.” than one type of football going on in Surrey at the moment. As well as ‘American’ football there is also a game called ‘Australian Rules Football’, known as ‘footy’ or perhaps most popularly ‘Aussie Rules’. Curious, I went to try it out. When I arrived at the 3G pitches of Surrey Sports Park, the first odd thing I noticed wasn’t the fact that they were

bounce it up to yourself roughly every 5 steps or you can kick the ball to another teammate who, if he catches it, can gain a ‘mark’ which is effectively a free kick.

Work experience student Justin, kangaroo jumps...

There is no offside so everyone can pretty much run where they like, and if someone is running with the ball a defender is well within his rights to shoulder barge - or full on tackle- the player to get the ball. The session was just over an hour and a half long and I must admit - I was knackered. But was it worth it? Most definitely. I hadn’t had so much fun in a long time. So if you are a fan of any type of team sport, and enjoy a level of organised madness, you’ve got to try Aussie Rules Football! I know you’ll be just as hooked as I was…

If you want to try it out yourself get down to Surrey Sports park at 7:30pm on a Thursday evening for training which Is located on the 3G pitches located behind Starbucks.

SURREY UNITED By Will Knowlton

Before we get into the crux of the matter, I just wanted to clear up an obvious but often neglected fact. Surrey’s Basketball team is no longer Surrey Heat, it’s Surrey United. Seems trivial to some but I often find myself met with confused faces when discussing the team’s matches and such. Anyway, on with the show…

I

think we can all agree that the end of last season was a tight match; suffice to say that by the last quarter of the Glasgow Rocks game there was little to differentiate the teams, their skill or style of play. United have many reasons to come back this season stronger and hungry. 91 reasons in fact, if you consider the last match. But enough of yesterdays, let’s look to the season that is; United’s first task is the London Lions. Admittedly there’s a home advantage here at Surrey Sports Park but the Friday evening match on the 26th of September marks the start of only United’s 2nd season in the BBL Championship which gives them everything to play for. Following the recent review Birmingham Knights were withdrawn from the BBL. This now leaves only 13 clubs to play out all 36 BBL Championship games this season. The teams will battle it out three times against one another; that’s three chances

for glory. Throw into the mix the fact that the teams will also be going head to head for play-off positioning to get that top eight position, and a chance to run on to the court at the BBL Play-Off Final on the 10th of May next year. The team are looking strong with the good news being that Elvisi Dusha and Korry Callum have signed on again ahead of the season’s start. Dusha maybe the youngest captain in the league but he showed maturity and poise last season averaging 9 points per game as well as 4 assists. Callum too runs on to court with plenty of experience having only not been courtside for one game last season. And who can forget that match against the Manchester Giants last January? All that’s left now is to support the guys at their matches and settle in to enjoy what is sure to be an action packed season from warm start to frosty finish next year. Go United!

SURREY SMASHED IT The Commonwealth Games Roundup The pomp and fanfare of the Commonwealth Games may have ended but the pride still shines brightly, and no more so than at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford. Sixteen Surrey Sports Park athletes made their way to Glasgow and of those, nine athletes brought home medals, doing their part to push Great Britain up the medal table. The tally is remarkable; Surrey Smashers players Gabby Adcock and Chris Langridge won 5 medals in badminton events as well as success in table tennis, while Team Surrey Sports Park’s Paul and Jo Drinkhall took gold in the mixed doubles event. This came after Paul’s silver which he won in the Men’s Team event. In the pool, Joseph Schooling won Silver in the Men’s 100m butterfly securing Singapore’s first swimming medal at The Commonwealth games. In an interesting twist on the final day of competition, Gabby Adcock and Chris Langridge came up against each other in the mixed doubles gold medal match. The match ended with Gabby and husband Chris taking gold while Chris Langridge and Heather Olver settled for silver. Talking after the Games, Adcock said: “This is what we have dreamt of doing before we came here. It is obviously what every athlete dreams of doing and to come actually do it is a surreal moment and I think it will take a while to sink in. It is a different feeling, an overwhelming feeling, and I feel proud when I see the medal table, knowing that I have contributed to it.”

INTRODUCING THE BMW i8: The Clean & Green Speed Machine

By Joe Payne The BMW i8 is a revolutionary car – and Vines of Guildford are one of the few dealerships to stock it. Read on to find out about the most important car of 2014…

A

s I accelerated down the A3 with frightening speed, it became abundantly clear what a work of genius the new BMW i8 actually is. For this is a fully hybrid sports car that looks positively space age; scissor doors that remind you of ‘that’ DeLorean; and it possesses an engine barely bigger than that of my T reg Fiesta, yet it’s capable of 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds. Moreover, it’s as easy a vehicle to drive as I’ve ever experienced. Put simply: we have to tell you about the future…

A

s one of the elite group of BMW dealers in the UK who stock the i series – the brand’s visionary electromobility range - Vines of Guildford are offering one of the most desirable cars on the market today. Its striking looks – aerodynamic and lowset, with swept edges and the aforementioned doors – coupled with that ferocious acceleration and limited top speed of 155mph means that the i8 was always going to prove popular. That, and its appearance in the latest ‘Mission Impossible’ film of course…

B

ut what makes this a truly revolutionary vehicle is its sheer efficiency – and we mean that in literally every sense. Unbelievably, from conception to hitting the showroom, the i8 is BMW’s shortest project to date. Produced in their carbon neutral plant in Leipzig, it boasts some remarkable statistics. Emissions clock in at a miniscule 49g/km and (should you use the hybrid technology correctly) there is the potential to get 134.5mpg - and you can cruise around in batteryonly mode for 23miles before the engine charges her up again. To put it another way, this incredibly fast sports car is so eco-friendly that you won’t need to pay tax or the congestion charge.

B

MW, then, have taken hybrid technology a huge step forward – and the Vines BMW dealership in Guildford have secured a real coup in stocking this car. In the future the i8 will, in this scribe’s humble opinion, go down as a landmark when considering the capabilities of hybrid technology. So if you’ve got a spare hundred grand to spend…

The company has recently won the UK’s biggest business accolade, the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, for its ongoing innovation over the last five years. Tom Higgins, Gold-i’s CEO, talks to us about his recent experience of going to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen and gives his views on why Guildford is a great place for business. When you founded Gold-i, hoW confident Were you that the company Would Go on to find the success that it has? Before setting up Gold-i, i was Chief Technology Officer for an online broker in the City. i was frustrated that there was no company in the world to buy specialist retail trading software from. Software had to be built in-house which was expensive and often limited in functionality. Other brokers also faced the same issues so i knew i had spotted a clear gap in a global market. i believed from the outset that i had some great ideas for software which would really disrupt the retail fX market and i knew that i had the experience and technical capabilities to lead a team of developers to create these products. However, i’d never run a business before and had to learn a lot of new skills along the way –from how to bring products to market through to how to recruit the best people into the business. What qualities have you found vital as an entrepreneur and leader? Clear vision, integrity and strong communication skills. What has been your biGGest obstacle in GroWinG Gold-i over these last five years? Starting a business from nothing with no external financing during the last recession was a tough start. i used my existing network of contacts to gain some consulting contracts and that provided funding to start employing full-time staff. Now the biggest challenge is managing the large scale and international growth we are experiencing.

is Guildford a Good place to do business? it’s a great place to do business, with quick and easy access to london to visit our City-based clients. it also has a strong pool of talent – people who live locally, are highly skilled and experienced but no longer want to commute to london. Working at the Surrey Technology Centre is ideal, with good resources and flexibility to accommodate growth - we’ve moved offices within the Surrey Technology Centre five times as we keep outgrowing the office space! hoW did it feel to Win the queen’s aWard for enterprise this year, and What Was it like to meet her majesty in person? i feel extremely proud that Gold-i has won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise. it’s a huge achievement – not just for me but for the whole team. it is really motivating to know that we have created a world class business. Visiting Buckingham Palace and meeting the Queen was a remarkable experience. i expected just a quick introduction but was given the opportunity to talk to her about Gold-i and our achievements to date. ME

SEPTEMBER 2014

‘Me’

Dominique Frazer VENUE OWNER VISONARY

LOCA L P E O P L E , E X T R AO R DI N A RY L I VE S . Who are you, what do you do? I run The Boileroom, Guildford’s alternative music venue. What are the best bits about the job? Working with creative people and being my own boss to a certain extent. I love seeing people enjoy the shows we put on and generally being involved in an industry that is constantly evolving and changing. I’m lucky that I get to listen to music all day. How did you start out in the live music business? I was running a music magazine called Spill a few years ago and we started putting on live shows in Southampton, London, Oxford and the back room of The Star in Guildford. From there we thought wouldn’t it be great if Guildford had a designated music venue…and here we are. It’s The Boileroom’s 8th Birthday on the 27th September, what have been the highlights over the years? That’s tough. I see every event like having a child, like a family and I love all of them separately for different reasons. We’ve had some amazing acts come through here including Abraham Wilson (who died recently), we’ve had Kele from Bloc Party, Peter Hook, Foals, Noisettes, Ed Sheeran…it goes on. For me personally, Hugh Cornwall from The Stranglers was a definite highlight, I was a proper fan girl for the night. If you were in a band what sort of music would you play? Instrument of choice? I would definitely be a Bass player and it would probably be something where I could scream or shout. We had The Marmozetes in last night and her voice is amazing, which was kind of like a mix of Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’s and Placebo-esque. I wouldn’t want a heavy hardcore band, just something with front.

Who would be on your wish list ‘dead or alive’ to play The Boileroom? Hmmm…Janis Joplin, Muddy Waters and probably PJ Harvey…and Billie Holiday…oh and Bjork. Thoughts on Guildford? I was born in Guildford and my Nanna used to have the fruit and veg shop here in the 1920’s and my Great Grandfather was a signalman at London Road Station, my mum went to the very first Guilfest when it was a folk festival, so my family have been in Guildford or generations and I have such a connection with the town. I love it here and I think the people make it. Favourite spot to relax? I really love it up at Pewley Downs, just being able to see all the countryside and forest. What do you get up to in your free time? I like going to exhibitions. I’m a big fan of playing squash and we’re trying to get a league set up here at The Boileroom. I listen to the radio at home and like to listen to a lot of vinyl. I love it.

For all of your alternative live music and cultural needs, visit The Boileroom at 13 Stoke Fields, Guildford GU1 4LS. Tel: 01483 440022 or Visit www.theboileroom.net
