CELEBRATE WOKING THIS JULY AND BEYOND Every year there seems to be more to celebrate about Woking than ever before. Which is why, after four successful years, Celebrate Woking just gets bigger and better. The community programme began life in the heady days of the 2012 with the Olympics and the Queen’s Jubilee and continues to shine a light on all that makes the borough of Woking such a great place to live. The programme of events run all year round, but it’s in the summer that things really hot up. There’s so much going on this month alone it’s hard to know where to begin! There is of course the ‘big one’: Party in the Park on 11th July, a day long family friendly festival of music and fun. Summer Sounds continue in the month with performances at the bandstand by the Woking Wind Orchestra (18th) and Haslemere Town Band (25th). RHS Wisley gets in on the action with a spate of events including Arts Fest (18th - 19th) and Alice in Wonderland events beginning this month. And look out for a series of spectacular performances and activities from Dance Woking over the summer, many of which you can join in too.

GUILDFORD LOCAL PLAN
LOOKS AT RENEWABLE ENERGY The Council has published two reports that will be used as part of the evidence base for the emerging Local Plan. The Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change Study identifies the issues that the Local Plan should address as well as six key themes for the borough that need to be considered: water shortage, temperature rise, flooding, transport emissions, domestic energy efficiency and renewable and low carbon energy. Cllr Matt Furniss, Lead Councillor for Infrastructure and Environment said: “We also commissioned a detailed Renewable Energy Mapping Study, which looks at renewable energy development opportunities for a number of different clean energy technologies across the borough.” This report also provides part of the evidence base for the Local Plan, to be used by developers to determine the most suitable renewable technologies for specific locations. It includes district heating (heating a number of dwellings from a single heat source), generating electricity and heat from solar panels, as well as wind, hydro and heat pumps.
The reports can be viewed at guildford.gov.uk/evidencebase

PLANNING APPLICATION COULD PROVIDE A GREENER CHOBHAM Greenspace, greenbelt, brownfill sites and local plans are the big issues being debated around the county right now. But for the lovely village of Chobham, a recent planning application received by Surrey Heath Borough Council seeks to provide a little more open, green space for the residents, which we think is always a good thing. The application proposes a Change of Use for agricultural land between Station Road and Chertsey Road, Chobham and seeks to change the land’s designated use into Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG*). This should ensure that the land will provide better links between the existing footpath network as well as providing enhanced public open space within Chobham. In addition, council ownership of the land as a SANG will ensure it remains public open space. The council has recently been awarded funding through the Environment Agency, for the design of a flood alleviation scheme on the land to mitigate flooding in Chobham Village Centre.

BEE SURREY photo needed By Rich Lee Where would we be without bees? Seriously, take away our honey-hoarding, flower pollinating winged friends and there’s barely an eco-system around that wouldn’t face dire consequences from their absence. But while science keeps a careful eye on global bee populations, it’s through the efforts of local beekeepers practicing their ancient craft that colonies can thrive in any environment, be it countryside, town or city. With the help of Surrey beekeeper Andrew Halstead, Rich Lee asks ‘Show me the honey!’ and gets a glimpse deep inside the Wisley hives of this fascinating, and vital, insect…
I can’t remember the last time I was stung by a bee. If I was dangerously allergic, I’m sure I would. Today would surely be a bad day to find out so I’m fervently hoping that the bee suit Andrew loaned me is up to its task. I zip up, tuck my jeans into my socks, hope for the best and follow Andrew into the hives’ enclosure. Andrew Halstead was formerly RHS Wisley’s Principal Entomologist. Now retired, he manages three hives among a clutch of eight, tucked away down the far end of RHS Wisley’s huge acreage, hives that have been there since 1978. As he primes his trusty and well used smoker he warns me from getting too close to the nearest of the hives. “I won’t touch that one,” he says, “it’s bad tempered and they’re in the process of being ‘requeened’.” Requeening is a way of improving the temper of a hive. There could be a number of reasons why a colony could get itself in a tizz, he explains. “It could be a one off, but if they’re persistently nasty it’s usually down to the queen. She may be getting a bit old and maybe a bit crotchety and it tends to spread through the colony. Most of the time bees are fairly benign and well behaved, but in those cases if you replace the queen it tends to solve the problem.” I’m left wondering what kind of political dramas might be unfolding in the depths of that troubled hive. Was her ‘Ma j’ losing her edge and sowing unrest among her
seething subjects? Was there a larva in there with power on her insectoid mind? I gave them a wide berth. Andrew visits the hives every week to check their condition and to look for signs of swarming. This is when a new honeybee colony is formed by the queen leaving a colony with a large group of worker bees in tow, providing new queens have been raised to replace her. Good for the dispersal of bee populations, not so good for the beekeeper’s honey harvest. A few puffs of smoke to calm the bees down and he begins to dismantle the hive, removing the upper layers where the bulk of honey is stored, inspecting the honeycomb as he goes. He explains how honeybee society works. “In any beehive you’ve got one fertile female and that’s the queen. Then you’ve got the worker bees, up to sixty thousand, which are the infertile females who collect the honey, build the honeycombs, defend the hive and feed the larvae. And finally you have a few hundred drones, which are the males.” And what do they do, I ask? “Bugger all.” Well, bugger all apart from mating with a virgin queen. And they say nurses have it tough. As Andrew carefully disassembles the hive, the further down we go we find cells that contain the early larval stages of new queens, containing nourishing royal jelly for the girls to feast on during their larval stage. Other cells contain drone and worker larvae. We also find

cells packed with pollen, the bee’s favourite protein-rich food. Andrew says that finding the queen is like looking for a needle in a haystack, but as we reach the lowest level of the hive, his sharp, experienced eyes spot her royal highness amid the crowd. Slightly longer than the others and marked with a crafty dab of paint on her thorax - a beekeeper’s trick - the queen skitters busily about her domain very unlike the immobile egg laying machine I’d naively imagined.
I’m waiting for this queen’s retinue to kick off at our intrusion but they instead seem unaware or simply not bothered. The only time they appear to get at all agitated is when I clumsily stumble in front of the hives entrance, releasing a lively cloud of bees around my netted face, bees which I choose to assume are only curious and not ready to sting me from here to Bournemouth. Andrew, naturally, is far more at ease with his charges, having spent a lifetime working with them after his father first introduced him to
Bee Involved Beekeeping is a fascinating and challenging hobby that is very rewarding in many ways – It’s even said that bees endow keepers with a long life. Fortunately, there are many groups near you that can help you take up a pursuit that could well become a lifelong passion. We’re almost certain the bees would thank you if they could! The Surrey Beekeepers Association goes back as far as 1872 and are now comprised of eight divisions around the county. Over the border in Hampshire you’ll find the Fleet Beekeepers Association. Many of these fine associations appear at public events and offer practical courses designed to help you handle your very own hives.
beekeeping as a boy. For him, the lure is all in the challenge of keeping them in good health and obtaining a good crop of honey. “A good hive, in a good year can produce about 100 to 150 pounds of honey. In a bad year, nothing!” UK bees have few predators but can suffer occasional attacks by woodpeckers, wasps and hornets. Weak colonies are vulnerable to wax moth caterpillars that eat the combs. A ma jor problem is Varroa mite. “You can’t be a beekeeper who just lets the bees get on with it. If you did the mites would carry on sucking the juices out of the larvae and spread bee virus diseases. You can’t eradicate the mites but you can mitigate the damage.” Another threat to bees are pesticides, particularly the controversial family known as neonicotinoids. Fortunately, beekeeping has seen something of a revival in the last decade, which still surprises Andrew. “You would think with all the problems that bees have with Varroa, people would be put off. But it seems to have the reverse effect. People want to do something to help bees. They’re coming forward to become beekeepers which is the best way to look after them.”
Bees Uninvited? Often honeybee colonies can make their home where they aren’t so welcome such as chimneys, wall cavities and garden trees. When they do it’s time to call in a professional to deal with them. And it helps when that professional also happens to be a bee lover such as PGH Pest Control’s Peter Higgs. Peter and his awardwinning company removes the honeybees and honeycomb those places and structures using no insecticide, by taking the combs and honeybees out alive and re-hiving them into wooden hives. Peter and his team then re-locate them to on his apiary or passes them on to bee keepers. Pete tells us: Our service will exclude honeybees from colonising most places on your house but not only this it will also keep mice, rats and squirrels out, and many creepy crawlies too. Prevention is better than cure and here at PGH Pest Control we are passionate about reducing pesticide use by understanding and preventing pests. SURSAR -JOINING UP
By Will Knowlton This month we look at how one goes about joining Surrey Search and Rescue as well as what to expect over the course of the training.
J
ust like any job, the first thing to do with Surrey Search and Rescue is contact them. I sent an email to the team asking when their next recruitment day was. To start with they took my details and asked when a convenient time was for a phone interview. A few days later, as arranged, I got a call from them and we had a short chat for about ten minutes or so about what to expect and if I had any questions. At the end of the phone call I was told I’d passed that stage and was invited to a fitness test the following month.
The test itself was a hike of ten miles, on which I was to cover the first 6 miles in under two hours. I later found out the Lowland Rescue national standard is 5 miles in two hours but Surrey like to push a little harder! The walk took in some lovely country side but it certainly wasn’t a ramble; we really had to keep pace! The 6 mile mark was on top of Gibbet Hill
near Hindhead so the last mile or so was pretty tough, but I liked the challenge. The next four miles was at a normal pace but along the route the team had set up team-building skills to see how we’d interact as a group. It was great fun and I had a real sense of achievement when I got an email later that week saying I’d passed. Then the real training began. There’s no real strict rules to it but my advice to anyone joining is to attend at least one training session a week. You’ll progress faster and also it will give you a good idea of the time commitment. Each session is in the evening so, if you work typical hours, there’s no worries about work getting affected. We trained in search skills (it’s more complex than you’d think) as well as first aid, map reading, understanding the statistics of missing people and how to work with dogs. Several of the people on my phase of recruitment decided to train
their dogs as search dogs. We all had to be police vetted as well, that’s something worth mentioning and you can’t go on searches for real until that’s done. All your qualifications are noted and once you’ve got them all it was off to a three day residential course in Wiltshire to bring all the skills together and be tested. This was a real challenge but a satisfying one - I was on air driving back from that! Once that was done I was made operational, and the funny thing is it doesn’t stop there. There’s still training every week, and the team become a bit like a new family which is great. I should say though it’s a big time-commitment; the calls can come at any time and your qualifications have to be renewed every few months so there’s no resting on your laurels. My first call out happened at 11pm just as I was climbing into bed…

HISTORY: COCKER NASH
“Each tale better than the last - honestly Bernard Cornwall didn’t have s*** on Cocker when it came to tales of the war.” Excellent.
I
t seems every generation has them. The old sweat at the bar, going on and on about past exploits, sitting on his stool, having the drinks poured for him first because he pays the landlord’s wage. Well, there’s an old tale of one such village stalwart and his name was Cocker Nash. He’s a good old local legend.
offensive at Salamanca, coming up with the idea of using Flanking in an Oblique order and telling Wellington, rescuing Spanish ladies from the clutches of the French and so forth. Each tale better than the last honestly Bernard Cornwall didn’t have s*** on Cocker when it came to tales of the war.
Now Cocker was a fish hawker from Farnham - kind of a travelling fish salesman. So you can imagine the look and smell of the man as he carted around fish caught from a sea that was several hours away with no refrigeration. Understandably he probably found it difficult being near himself, but that didn’t stop him popping into the pub after a particularly good day spreading Scombroid goodness amongst the local population. Anyway, who could begrudge a man a pint after a good day at the office? So, a pint of Midden Peculiar and a Jaeger bomb it was then.
“Nothing,” said the legend propping up the bar, “nothing could scare old Cocker Nash”.
Then as now, the standard was for everyone else in the pub to not pay much attention. Cocker Nash didn’t really give a toss anyway; “sod it, I’ll stay here get righteous and tell tales”. There were all the classics of the Peninsular War that of course featured him front and centre of the action. Leading the
Maybe it was because he had drunk his body weight in ale that saw him saunter off into the night, declaring love to a lamppost, taking 3 steps forward and 4 sideways by way of a particularly unyielding bush. Who knows, but it was a night with no moon. This may seem trivial now but before street lights and the neon loveliness of the modern high street, no moon made for a dark journey. When he looked up from the ditch he’d just chundered in he realised he was lost somewhere in Waverley woods. Cocker had cocked up. It was a little scary in the woods; A rustle of a dogger here, a snap of the twig there, the swoosh of the owl as it flies on its way to Hogwarts. All the training that had seen him through the war kicked in and he knew what to do:
By Will Knowlton “Man Lost” he called out “Oh Jesus Christ! Man Lost!” There was no reply and Cocker was starting to flap good style. He was going to have to spend the night under the trees. He’d never done that; he’d always been warm in the tent the Catering Corp used. All at once through the gloom he heard: “Who? Who?” Yes! Someone had heard him and was asking his name - he was going to get out of here! “It’s me!” he cried “It’s Cocker Nash from Farnham!” The apparent saviour had obviously not heard him; “Who? Who?” “It’s me, Cocker Nash from Farnham!” This guy really wasn’t listening “Who? Who?” Now Old Cocker boy was desperate and, with his voice cracking ever so slightly and releasing a small fart of fear he screamed back: “Cocker Nash from Farnham! Don’t leave me here, I beg of you!” Alas, Cocker was a d*ck. Cocker had not heard someone, Cocker had heard the pigeons calling out “Coo Coo…”

JOE PAYNE | WEB EDITOR CONTENT KING I’m looking forward to the G Live beer festival and the prospect of maybe seeing Surrey’s Kevin Pietersen play in the ashes and a dip in the Lido pool as well. Warhol and the World of Pop Art
25th July – 1st November 2015 / The Lightbox, Woking We love The Lightbox! After wrapping up their most recent exhibition with Britain’s finest and fan of the formaldehyde, a certain Mr Damien Hirst, the cultured creatures of the copper coloured cube are back! This time it’s to bring the world of pop art and arguably its foremost maker and creator, Andy Warhol, to the people of Woking and beyond. With other notable artists work on display including Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, James
Rosenquist and Jasper Johns and from Europe, notable works by ‘new realist’ artists will include Claude Gille, Erró and Nikki de Saint Phalle. More than just art, the exhibition ‘Warhol and the World of Pop’ will for the first time present a comprehensive overview of how Pop art was adopted by America and Europe, across all applied mediums such as packaging, pop music, fashion and furniture. Suddenly, the clatter of children is silenced by the thunder of hooves and the furious snorting of horses. The peaceful air is pierced by the screech of battle cry and the sleepy scene shattered by the clash of swords… THIS, GOOD SIR’S, IS THE LOXWOOD JOUST! loxwoodjoust.co.uk co.uk

INALA: A ZULU BALLET
By Alexander D’Arcy The definition of Inala is ‘an abundance of goodwill’. This is so much more than just a definition of a word; consider it a synopsis of the production or even an ethos for the whole cast and company, that are so immersed in the journey that Inala has and continues to undertake. South African legends Ladysmith Black Mambazo and super production team, Sisters Grimm (Ella Spira & Pietra Mello-Pittman) come to Woking’s New Victoria Theatre for two nights as part of their national tour. We caught up with some of the team to find out what Inala means to them.
......................
......................
................
................
TALKING TO… ALBERT of Ladysmith Black Mambazo What does Inala mean to you? You know Inala… it means that we have seen good things happen to Ladysmith Black Mombazo. It brings a lot of joy to me that we have achieved our dream. What is happening now makes us happy all the time. It’s a celebration of our history and as you say ‘the cherry on top’! LBM won a Grammy last year and are now back on tour with Inala. You’re still going strong after all these years. What’s your secret? The secret is the music itself. It’s an inspiration and it gives us energy. The music makes you happy and when you’re happy you can do anything, you can do something you’re not able to do without music.
How did this collaboration with sisters Ella and Pietra happen? I salute these ladies you know. When they first came to us and presented us with their idea, we said “oh wow, ballet and Mambazo” – then they took us to see the Royal Ballet and Pietra was dancing. We watched it, we enjoyed it and then afterwards we tried to put it together. First of all we needed new material and new music but with Piano. This was the first time that Mambazo had written music with a piano but it worked so well. They worked so hard over a long time and the music and the dancing work so well together. So unique. You’re keeping Zulu culture alive and well through your song and now visually with
ENTERTAINMENT

Are you inspired by the places you’ve visited by going on tour and do you take any influence from that and incorporate it into the music of Ladysmith Black Mombazo? You know we’ve taken a lot of influences from places, for instance England It’s a place that you can see that people keep their culture and what heritage they have.
Did you ever imagine that your work with Paul Simon and the album Graceland would have such a global success and effect? To be honest with you, I’ve never imagined that it would go this far, when we joined Paul Simon and did Graceland I thought that was it, there’s nothing left to achieve. Instead of dying down it all just keeps happening. So whatever happens now every time when I wake up in the morning I say ‘wow, it’s still going?’
................
..................
We’re very excited to visit some places that we’ve never been. But keeping the culture alive is so important. The Zulu culture that we took it from our fathers we took it, we refined it and we polished it. We want to keep it pure and undiluted, exactly as it is.
I was looking at the buses in London the day before yesterday and the new buses they make like the old buses. It encourages us to retain our culture and to keep as it is and to stay original.
..................
Inala. Are you looking forward to taking the show on a national tour?

TALKING TO…
.................
...............
...............
ELLA SPIRA & PIETRA MELLO-PITTMAN:
.................
What does Inala mean to you?
Inala has had a hugely successful first year and is now set to go on tour - did you imagine this success when you first set to work on this project? P: We dreamed that everybody would like it, we believed that no one could not
P: It started with the music. Ella took me to Mambazo’s show and it just sounded so incredible you just get goose bumps from the harmonies. It’s really emotional. We wanted to create a visual spectacle and something that hadn’t been done before. E: The thing that we definitely set out to do was to make sure that we were adding to the music. We wanted there to be a reason for everything that we did. It’s completely new and unique. We’ve got such a great team involved from Marc Baldwin (choreographer) to Adrian Rhodes (sound designer). How excited are you about taking the show on the road, performing to local audiences?
What’s the premise, the objective for Sisters Grimm and what can audiences look forward to in the future? E: Our focus is definitely going to continue to be big music with big visuals that include some of Pietra’s training that she’s come from but in more of an accessible way. We don’t want to alienate anybody. We want to present world music and dance to people and for them to find it accessible and to enjoy it.
.................
P: It’s certainly something that we wanted to do. I have a ballet background, but always felt that it didn’t need to be in the Opera House. I always danced on a green or a church hall and always liked doing ballet to other music so it was always our aim to take it to a broad audience and create a very entertaining show that would appeal to people of all ages. I grew up in Bramley
...............
E: On a personal level, it is all about collaboration and breaking new ground and introducing something new to lots of other people hopefully.
Inala is quite the collaboration, where was the idea born and how did it evolve?
actually and always did Panto in Woking when I was younger so it’s exciting to be going back. I can’t believe we’re taking the show there.
...............
P: Inala translates as an abundance of good will and harvest, in Zulu, which suited exactly what we were hoping to achieve with a collaboration with so many disciplines involved.
like the music. Introducing the dance element to an already successful group was a risk because it hadn’t been open before and not everybody likes classical ballet or contemporary dance. But I think it’s a respectful collaboration.

BARE JAMS
“Organic and freshly brewed party vibes, which really shouldn’t be missed” For those that don’t know who are you? “We’re Bare Jams, we play music. Local to Guildford for the last four years. We’ve got a funk reggae vibe going on”.
When did you start playing music? “The name Bare Jams started 5 years ago between me (Sam) and Olly as a busking duo. For the past year and a half we’ve been a seven piece”.
What’s the creative process, how do you go about laying down a track? “We start by watching a bit of Gordon Ramsey, some ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ that usually gets us in the vibe. Pat, Dave and I (Olly) usually come up with an idea take and take it the others. It’s very much a joint effort. As soon as we add more layers, more instruments it changes and evolves. There’s more ingredients to play with, more to work with”.
Influences music and worldly? “Musically? Literally everything. The whole flavour of the band is everyone’s different influence. There’s a lot of diversity within the band. We all listen to different things. I guess there is common ground in funk, reggae and ska, bit of jazz, bit of hip hop”.
Do you draw on local experiences to write your music? “We open up our music to interpretation; lyrically we want to touch on topics that everyone can relate to that everyone can have their own opinion of. A lot has happened since we’ve been in Guildford so I guess we have drawn on those experiences to be where we are now. The ma jority of us went to ACM and that allowed networking. Being in that environment has developed us and taught us disciplines. We come from the middle of nowhere and there’s only so much a sheep can teach you. Now we’re on to the next chapter”.
What’s next for Bare Jams? “We’re playing Boomtown Festival as well as a little festival in Belgium called Chili Con Rock. A number of other smaller festivals too which is cool. We’re heading to Amsterdam this weekend to play a festival and then a show in the centre of the city”.
By Alexander D’Arcy Recommendation, hang out wise in the Guildford area... “The Keystone, we go there. The Kings Head too. We like the Mount, beautiful view points and nice benches. In fact yeah, benches, we love benches, we appreciate nice benches. We’ve actually got a page run by our keyboard player all about how benches and how they can be put into different environments”. (A separate bench orientated interview ensues…)
What’s on your speakers right now? “A lot of Fat Freddy’s Drop. I think some of the stuff we’re writing at the moment has a bit of a Fat Freddy’s sound. Some Nu-wave Christian Gabba, Mika (laughs). We listen to a lot of James Brown, Backbeat Sound System…all sorts. We listen to a lot of mates’ bands too”.
Favourite ice cream / lollipop / sorbet? Favourite summer past time when you’re not making music? “Everything. When we’re not playing festivals we like being at them. For the past few years we’ve been going as paying punters. The only one’s we’re going to this year are the one’s we’re playing at. We’re venturing into Europe this summer too. Our goal is to push that. We’re an independent band and want to make the D.I.Y thing work and be able to look back on our hard work and be proud”.
“Fabs, Twisters. Love Ben and Jerrys. Love ice cream. That’s what our tune ‘Cold Treats’ is about, ‘just another daydream, thinking about Ice Cream’, Yeah, we write about important s**t”.

TALKING TO: ELECTRIC SWING CIRCUS
Party in the Park comes back town on the 11th July for the annual summertime celebration of all things Woking. With a distinctly vintage theme for this year’s jamboree we caught up with Tom Hyland, ringmaster of the headline act, Birmingham based, six-piece, Electric Swing Circus to talk all things swing and more.
âWhat can the people of Woking and beyond expect? What’s does a typical live show from Electric Swing Circus entail? Expect to smile and expect to dance. We love to play to families and seeing kids on their dad’s shoulders, grandmas’ dancing. We like to get people on their feet. We want to see lots of dancing and lots of smiles. âSwing music has seen quite a resurgence over the past few years, why do you think that is? I think it’s a couple of reasons. Swing as a genre is really fun. There’s a sense of escapism. People want to escape, take a break from their lives and want to go somewhere new and swing really allows people to do that. Most of all I think swing is just really fun. In terms of electronic music, dubstep and grime, there’s a lot of music that is quite angry and quite moody and swing is a nice alternative to that. âWho or what has inspired Electric Swing Circus? We were all friend’s just jamming, meeting up and playing music. It
was actually a specific track, ‘Deep Henderson’ by Nick Hollywood. I heard it and showed it to the guys and thought maybe we could try something a bit like that and it kind of spiralled from there and really fell into place. We started listening to more swing like Caravan Palace and Parov Stelar. When we started out there were only about 20 electro swing tracks out of there and all the swing nights were playing the same tunes, so it was a very small Electro Swing scene when we started. It’s a lot bigger now, more variety and there’s a lot more going on. âYou play a lot of festivals and have also established and curated your very own Swingama jig festival - how did that happen? We run a club night in Birmingham and it had been running for a couple of years. We’ve always wanted to run a festival. We thought “what if we make this a little bit bigger, will people still come?” So we tried it and that was three years ago. We had 1000 people turn up and it sold out. Last year it was 2.000 people and this year it was 3,000 so it’s growing
really quite steadily and has been quite successful. âWhat’s next for Electric Swing Circus? We’re currently recording and have started work on the new album and working pretty hard on that. Hopefully we’ll have that finished for the end of the year with a release in 2016. Fingers crossed we’ll have a track ready prior to that which we’ll release with a video sometime before the end of the year. âIf you were in an actual circus, what kind of performer would you be? I think I would have to be the ring master. I absolutely love the idea of the ring master, being the MC and bringing it all together. I like to wear a top hat on stage so I think that’s what I’d be the happiest doing. Party in the Park takes place on the 11th July in Woking Park. It’s FREE, it’s on your door step and you are most definitely invited. For more info visit celebratewoking.info

JULY 2015
TALKING TO
JOLIE PAPILLON The Hundred Watt Club has been taking Surrey, Hampshire and beyond by storm over the past couple of years. For their date at Aldershot’s West End Centre on the 11th July, we caught up with the headline act; international, award winning Burlesque Artiste and Showgirl extraordinaire Miss Jolie Papillon. By Alexander D’Arcy
When did you first get into burlesque dancing? I started 5 years ago. I auditioned for numerous shows as a dancer and then I literally found this company who were looking for dancers for their burlesque show. Later I heard from them and they wanted to me to be part of their show for New Year’s Eve. I said yes and then a few days later I was opening a burlesque show in London and from then on I’ve never stopped.
What does Burlesque mean to you? To me it means expressing my creativity, my femininity.
How did you feel the first time you performed to an audience? Very nervous actually, even though I’ve performed since I was quite young as a dancer, it was such a new thing for me. Not so much because of the strip-tease elements, but because for the first time it was me on my own delivering my own
creation. So I was nervous but really excited at the same time. Previously I was always part of a group or company doing cabaret or musical theatre. I’d always been given things to perform or have had to be the choreographer for the whole team but not just for me as an artiste, so coming up with a burlesque routine was a new thing for me.
What can people expect from one of your performances? Lots of energy, fun, interaction and I think a different burlesque style to what people have seen before. Quite different I think. I think most of my performances are really quite passionate so hopefully that will come out.
Do you feel there has been or is a resurgence in burlesque dancing? I always seem to see events here, there and everywhere. Why do you think that is?
ways. They’re really trying to find a way to be more confident in life in general. I think that’s what Burlesque does, it’s really celebrating women in all forms and shapes. And it helps you to feel free from many of the social constraints and agendas, like how society will tell us we need to look a certain way to feel good about themselves. It’s all about empowering women.
What advice would you give to budding burlesque dancers out there? Research, study and try to find your own unique way of expressing yourself. I think formal dance training can help even if it’s for a short period of time. Ballet dancing or theatre school. I’ve actually just come from a Japanese Dance class as part of my research for a new act I want to perform. So hard work and research are always important to me.
I think because ladies especially want to celebrate their femininity in their own
Head to the Hundred Watt Club which will be at the Aldershot West End Centre on 11th July to catch the wonder that is Jolie Papillon.

TALKING TO: JAMIE EAST SITTING ON THE THRONE By Tayler Willson
Game of Thrones – AKA that show that has all the dragons and the magic and the other stuff – came to another series end recently, an ending that shocked its fans. I don’t watch the show. The reason I don’t watch the show isn’t just because I don’t have Sky Atlantic and whenever I’ve tried to watch it online my laptop gets overrun with hundreds of pop-ups. No, the reason’s the fact I have an innate aversion for anything anyone describes to me as “Fantasy”. Surrey-based Jamie East presenter of Sky Atlantic’s Thronecast with Sue Perkins, a show that discusses each Game of Thrones episode throughout each season, described me as a mean, unpublishable word for not getting into the show - I was pretty sure there’s more to it than that, though…
HEY JAMIE – FIRST OF ALL, WHAT MAKES GOT DIFFERENTFROM OTHER FANTASY-BASED OBSESSIONS LIKE, LORD OF THE RINGS?
ACCORDING TO SOCIAL MEDIA, I’M PRETTY SURE SOMEONE DIED AT THE END OF THE SERIES THAT PEOPLE DIDN’T WANT TO DIE. AM I RIGHT?
“It takes about three or four episodes to kind of forget that this is a fantasy show and that dragons don’t actually exist. It’s based on real life historical events like the War of the Roses, so if you ignore the fact it’s set in this time you’re not really sure of and there’s magic, it’s kind of the same as real life.
“This has happened every single series. The whole point of Game of Thrones that sets it apart from any other TV show is that it’s so unpredictable. Back in series one, someone who was a favourite and you assumed would end up the hero was killed off. From then on then, you realise that no one is safe and that’s the beauty of Game of Thrones.”
“There’s a lot of horrible stuff that happens in it; there’s torture, violence, sex and this that and the other. There aren’t any other fantasies that incorporate all these into one show. It gets certain factions of fans going because there’s a fit blonde woman riding a dragon, but there are many more people who like it because it’s a tale of revenge, hatred and a political drama - there’s a lot more to it than people think.”
ONE THING YOU’D LIKE TO SEE IN THE NEXT SERIES? “A dragon in King’s Landing.”
BACK INTO REALITY: YOU’RE NOT FROM SURREY ORIGINALLY, WHAT WAS IT THAT BROUGHT YOU HERE? “I’m from Derby originally and in 1999 I moved down to London for work and everything, bought up a whole bunch of kids. We were in London for around twelve years and
got fed up. Then, weirdly by chance in a kind of rightmove Tinder-style way we moved to Brookwood. “We fell in love with the house. We got this weird eco earth shelter in and luckily the village and transport was brilliant, plus one of the best schools was just around the corner in Pirbright.”
IS THERE ANYWHERE IN PARTICULAR YOU GO IN SURREY ON THE RARE OCCASIONS YOU DO HAVE TIME OFF TO RELAX? “We used to go to Clandon House quite a bit. Surrey has made me, quite happily, turn into an old fart when I moved in. I bought a National Trust membership and we kind of just went out an explored. “Generally, one of the best things about living in Surrey is that you don’t have to go miles around if you want to find a bit of tranquillity and some nice views. “I had a big hangover yesterday, went for a walk with the dogs, the dog fell asleep on a hill and I had no phone signal – it was bloody marvellous.”

Talking to Storage Hunters UK’s Dapper Dan Hill
Storage Hunters UK on Dave TV has become one of television’s most addictive reality shows thanks to the high stakes antics of its colourful cast of dealers looking for treasures hidden behind lockups and in storage depots. Now in its second series, we spoke to one of its biggest stars, the cocky, mischievous but also kind of charming ‘Dapper’ Dan Hill who, as it happens, hails from our very own Guildford…
me to a lot of auctions, like the one they used to have at Slyfield in Guildford. It’s something I’ve done for most of my life. Even when I was at school I use to buy sweets from the cash and carry and sell ‘em off. Anything to make a bit of extra pocket money.
TAKE US THROUGH YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL BACKGROUND, DAN.
DO YOU ENJOY THE ATTENTION THE SHOW’S SUCCESS HAS GIVEN YOU?
I’m kind of a Del Boy wheeler dealer! I started my own business when I was twenty one, buying and selling all kinds of things, mainly reclaimed building materials. I had a big yard down in Brighton for a bit. These days I specialise in finding unusual items for clients in Surrey and Chelsea.
You can’t go down the road without someone shouting, ‘I’ll have some of that!’ It’s a bit of fun really, but at the end of the day I’m a businessman. I’m there to make money. I’m not there to make friends. If there’s something there I want I’m going to try and get it!
WHERE DOES YOUR BUSINESS STREAK COME FROM? My Dad’s always been a bit of a wheeler dealer, him and my Grandad used to take
YOU’VE BEEN WITH THE SHOW SINCE THE FIRST SERIES. WAS THERE ANY DOUBT THAT THE FORMAT WOULD WORK IN THE UK? Not really, it was a massive hit in America and was shown over here on the Dave channel. It was one of their biggest programmes, so it was a natural progression for Dave to make their own programme.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR BIDDING STYLE? For me, I’m quite cocky, quite sure of myself. If I can kind of wind people up and put them off their game, then they’re not
concentrating and not valuing what’s in the locker. We’re all proper dealers and all want to make money so we all have different ways of going about it. YOU’RE FROM GUILDFORD ORIGINALLY. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THE TOWN AND SURREY? I moved away for a little bit but moved back Surrey way about two years ago. But I’m born and bred Guildford, I used to go to school at St Peters. My best memories there was when I was younger. Messing about with my mates down the river, up Stoke Park in the summer. Guildford’s a good place to live. WHAT SURPRISES LIE IN STORE FOR VIEWERS IN THIS SERIES? I tell you what, mate, there’s definitely a lot of drama this time around. You’ll have to wait and see, but there’s definitely some fisticuffs. There’s more drama than TOWIE, everyone’s going for it on this one!
Series 2 of Storage Hunters UK is on Dave Channel and airs on Tuesday nights at 8pm. Read the interview in full at theguide2surrey.com

WHERE TO EAT: Bel and the Dragon, Godalming
You know it as that ‘restaurant in a church’ but as Rich Lee discovers, there’s more to the Bel & the Dragon than meets the eye…
We’re hosted by the restaurant’s effusive and enthusiastic manager Wimpie who insists, quite rightly, that we kick things off with one of the Bel’s renowned cocktails. Indeed the Bel easily appeals not just to diners but to anyone seeking a casual glass of their excellent wines, or the fancier concoctions conjured up by their expert mixologists.
Forgive me readers for I have sinned. For someone whose duty it is to sniff out the top spots and the not spots of Surrey dining, how could I have let such an intriguing proposition as the Bel & Dragon pass me by for nearly fifteen years? That the restaurant’s unique and inviting locale happens to be a congregational church built in the 1600s makes me feel twice damned. Let the atonement commence…
But it doesn’t end there. Fancy a gospel brunch? The unique intimacy of a supper club? You’ll find them here. Live music, private dining, functions… with a venue this special, you wouldn’t spare the kitchen sink either.
You’d have to have a stony heart not to be impressed the second you walk through these doors. The high vaulted ceiling, the stained glass windows, polished woods and tile floors and gleaming bar pull you in from the start. Being a warm evening, the terrace outside with its flora and distinctive green egg BBQ looked especially appealing, but I figured I’d taken this long to visit this unique venue that I might as well enjoy the interior now I was here.
Our meal began with a colourful dish of cured silver bream and pickled cucumber (£11), cuddled up to beetroot and a spicy Bloody Caesar sorbet, that was fresh and earthy, sweet and tangy all at once. Across from this a simple, sunny poached egg, oozing over avocado, swimming with hollandaise and a happy blob of bacon chutney (£9) was as delicious as that sounds. This was getting good, and the main course only confirmed it. The fish of the day was a pearly slab of Sea Bass sat over spring vegetables and crayfish butter (£16) that was light and lovely and heartier than it appeared while Roasted Suckling Pig
(£19), words that by themselves would be enough to make me glaze over in pleasure, was all kinds of wonderful: juicy meat, rich gravy and golden crackling so cracking they could hear me crunch from the terrace. I didn’t care. Others in our party clearly saw the opportunity to indulge their inner carnivore and fell on a handsomely carved Rib Of Beef on the bone (£66, feeds 2-3), all blushing pink centres and dripping juices, and I’m calling it - maybe the best thyme and duck fat roasties I’ve ever tried (alright, stolen.) Almost but not quite overpowered by a meal that was hitting just about every note, we plumbed the desserts for a fitting finale and fell on a Gooey Chocolate Nemesis (£6) and an exquisite Summer Cup and Mint Jelly terrine (£6, think posh wobbly Pimm’s courtesy of distillers Sipsmith.) I left the Bel & the Dragon with the sense that I’d timed my long overdue visit just right. If it wasn’t before, Godalming should be proud. Beneath these once hallowed eaves is a restaurant bursting with ideas and bristling with quality and enthusiasm. You might say I’ve been converted.

WHERE TO EAT: TANTE MARIE
By Rich Lee Woking’s great culinary academy finally has a restaurant for the hungry public. Was it worth the wait? Oh yes…
W
hile there’s been a lot of noise lately (mostly from me, admittedly) about the seemingly unstoppable march of Woking’s reviving restaurant scene, perhaps it’s worth asking what it’s actually brought us. We’ve seen a town with a handful of tired, entrenched independents and fast food bars joined in the last couple of years by a parade of chain restaurants carving out a space for themselves along Commercial Way. But with only one or two exceptions, in truth there’s arguably little to get excited about despite all the options Woking now has on the dinner table. Until now. For Woking’s prestigious culinary institution, the Tante Marie Academy, has finally set up shop in the town itself, giving the public the opportunity to experience the school’s proud cooking heritage and progressive flair, cooked and served by the graduates themselves. If you didn’t know, the Tante Marie is the UK’s oldest cookery school and first fired its ovens back in 1954. In the last couple of decades this one time temple to the classical French cookery arts has been hauled firmly into the 21st century, broadening their scope to include the kind of training found in some of the most exciting kitchens in the world.
With its move earlier this year from the leafy Chertsey Road to a state of the art teaching premises in the heart of the town, opening a Tante Marie restaurant should have been the biggest no brainer since somebody first paired duck with l’orange.
If French food is your thing, the Tante Marie could well be your new happy place...
S
o it’s just as well that this entirely unique restaurant offers such an inviting space to come to, be it for breakfast, lunch, a pre-theatre meal or evening dinner. The bright and breezy dining space comes in tones of clean white, cool cyan and gleaming bronze thanks to its gorgeous polished bar that looks straight out of the best Parisian bistro, while alfresco seating provides an ideal spot for people watching. Whether out front or in the kitchen, this is where graduates of the Academy’s renowned Cordon Bleu Diploma cut their teeth in preparation for the careers that lie ahead. In honour of its school roots, pleasing little
academic touches abound from the school exercise book menus to culinary lessons hanging on the walls. Spring vegetable beignets with caper and lemon mayonnaise were an outrageous early tease; the airy, golden puffs melting in the mouth with a sensuous waft of Indian spice, while a plate of rabbit rillettes proved that the TM’s chefs aren’t afraid of getting light and playful with such a rustic French staple. Pairing coarse, salty shredded meat with the tropical tone of pineapple chutney is something quietly brilliant if you ask me. From these two tantalising, delicious starters a picture had begun to form that something really quite interesting was happening at this restaurant; an effortless, intercontinental kind of fusion I haven’t tasted on a high street for a long time. Without speaking we agreed that it was going to take another starter or two to know for sure so we bowled into two more dishes; you know, for research. So it was that another plate of Asian marinated salmon offered almost a ceviche like luscious freshness and citrus tang while a dish of tender scallops made such cunning use of carrot - as puree, crisps and fritter - it’s a wonder other restaurants don’t think of pairing root veg and shellfish more often. Silly restaurants.
FOOD & DRINK
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Food-and-Drink
So far, so light and so very nice, but with mains on my mind I confess I wanted something a little more - as the French might say - I don’t know what? Given the school’s culinary heritage, a part of me just so badly wanted a plate of something achingly Gallic. With nary a decent bouillabaisse or cassoulet to be found for miles (and I’ve looked, believe me), in spite of its modern identity and broader than ever influences, surely the Tante Marie could rustle up something out of the continental old school?
however, that if you want to see a real show, come for the full dinner menu instead, for a glimpse at what this fabulous and unfettered new restaurant can really do.
The kitchen that seems unafraid to surprise customers with unexpected twists and flavours...
W
ell, I got my wish and more in the form of a classic confit duck, the golden haunch of canard resting over spiced puy lentils given an aromatic lift from coriander. Given the academic context, I have no hesitation in calling this dish ‘textbook’ in the sense that the sweet, earthy rich meat was all kinds of timeless perfection. I picked that bone clean without shame or remorse. If French food is your thing, the Tante Marie could well be your new happy place. We need to talk about Marco. There are great restaurant managers, the kind that carry the whole customer experience effortlessly on their shoulders – the sort that make you feel completely at home. Marco, on the other hand, is the kind of restaurant manager that makes you want to move in. You could see the man’s enthusiasm, his love for what he does, rubbing off in the easy, unaffected charm of the restaurant’s front of house team, themselves Tante Marie graduates. Along with his counterpart in the kitchen, Head Chef Sue Lee, it’s obvious that the hospitality industry’s next generation are in very good hands indeed. Back to the meal and desserts brought a silky smooth vanilla pannacotta with crazy-moreish burnt lemon and cinnamon pastry soldiers, all crispy crack and sugary snap, and a truly ace dish of poached pears, toffee sauce and clotted cream given a cheerful crunch from a coating of cornflakes. Adding the bold green flavour of thyme to this was another cunning play by a kitchen that seems unafraid to surprise customers with unexpected twists and flavours. On our visit we enjoyed the pre-theatre set menu (with a couple of extra plates), for an absolute bargain at £24.00per person with a glass of wine. We suspect

FIRE IT UP!
W
e in Britain all know and love our barbeques - those lazy summer days outside in the garden, beer in hand, lads around the grill and the kids running around like loons. Well, we’re definitely not alone in this world, and our cousins over the pond have a few bright ideas in the old barbeque department. So I thought I’d share, as I feel it’s time for us lot in the UK to take it beyond carbonated sausages and dry chicken legs. How did we start Barbequing? Generally historians believe that when landing in the Caribbean, the Spanish used the word “barbacoa” to describe the way the Amerindians slow-cooked meat. Fast forward to the 19th century, this way of cooking had spread across the American South. Now, pigs were prevalent in the region and this meant pork became the primary meat at barbecues. In the south the climate is warm and humid, which meant wheat was prone to fungal infections, so corn bread became the side dish of choice. Our Texan cousins like rubs (no, not like that). Rubs are various herbs and ingredients that are (surprise, surprise) rubbed onto whatever particular meat you decide to cook. The infusion melts into the meat giving it an amazing flavour and coupled with a slow cooking time, makes it super tender as well. So take a leaf out of their book and try this on for size a spot of smoked Barbeque brisket. This is a traditional brisket rub and probably one of the most common in the Lone Star State. It’s amazingly
The Great British Barbie season is upon us, with the warmth and sunshine (or not) compelling us to don aprons and grab the tongs ready for a summer of great al fresco cook-offs.
easy to make and has everything you need to make a delicious piece of brisket. The rub gives the meat a perfect balance of sweetness and the saltiness. Added to all this, brisket isn’t sold that often in butchers so the meat will be quite reasonably priced (try Fulk Brothers in Pirbright). Preparation time? About 10 minutes, so nice and easy. But you’ll have to leave it overnight to let the rub soak in. This is a recipe for a party barbeque, not an impromptu quick one with mates. You’ll need a BBQ with a lid and you need to get up in the morning to light and get the barbeque going. The meat needs to cook “slow and low” so start in the morning and your brisket should be ready by mid-afternoon
TEXAS BBQ DRY RUB INGREDIENTS Æ 113 grams cup paprika Æ 75 grams brown sugar Æ 3 tablespoons garlic powder Æ 3 tablespoons onion powder Æ 2 tablespoons oregano
PREPARATION:
Æ 2 tablespoons salt
Æ
Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl.
Æ
Next, score the meat and work the rub gently into the surface of the brisket, especially over the exposed meat.
Æ
Wrap the meat in foil and leave it overnight to let all the goodness soak in. If you don’t use all the rub it stores really well; just throw it in an airtight container and keep in a cool, dark place like your dry food cupboard - a fridge is probably a bit too chilly.

PICNIC PERFECTION
TRAVEL LIGHT No less than cookery legend Delia Smith says: “I feel many people go wrong by trying to transport the sort of meal they would eat at home: it just doesn’t taste the same on squashy paper plates with plastic knives and forks in sizes fit only for four year olds. “For me, real plates, cutlery and glasses are infinitely preferable to anything in the plastic line. We also have some thick chunky glasses, which may not look very sophisticated but are far nicer – especially if you’re drinking wine – than paper cups.”
box hill
A few indispensable extras include pepper and salt, corkscrews, bottle openers, wet wipes, a sharp knife and – for true authenticity – a throw out blanket, preferably with a waterproof back.
OF FOOD AND DRINK Hilda Leyel, author of the 1936 book The Perfect Picnic, sagely observed that “the art of arranging meals is to choose dishes that are better cold than they would be hot.” Think salads, both veg and pasta types, pies, cheese, crusty bread, charcuterie like parma ham and salami, ripe plum tomatoes, cheese, chutneys, olives, fresh strawberries and cream, cupcakes and, of course, all the wine you can carry. How the Victorians would have envied our modern wine coolers. ). Be cautious of dishes made with mayonnaise or other ingredients that may spoil in the heat. Go for vinegarbased salads and spreads, which keep well in a cooler and save a few calories too. Fruit punches are great carried in thermos flasks and are a better alternative to sugary soft drinks for the kids (providing they’re not laced with booze, of course.)
PAINSHILL PARK
GREAT SURREY
LOCATION, LOCATION Beauty spots abound in Surrey but the great thing about picnics is that not only can they make a perfect excuse to get out for their own sake, they can be brought with you on a visit to virtually any place of interest (providing there’s adequate green space, of course). So think historic homes and castles, theme parks and zoos and festivals to name just a few. If you’re truly venturing into the countryside though, a few light supplies won’t slow you down, but a significant al fresco banquet is best enjoyed close to the car park you arrived at for no other reason than who wants to haul hampers and cool bags for miles? Truly savvy picnickers will often choose a spot near to a hospitable pub, just in case the weather turns. And for beer.

Thirsty Business: The vineyard tour In recent years, Surrey (and its surrounds) has garnered significant attention for its vineyards. Back in the 80s – when many of these renowned wine-creators planted their first crops – vino was exclusively the preserve of the established countries. France, Chile, Australia – the prospect of English-made wine was rather derided.
You see, the vast Surrey Hills and North Downs are geographically similar to the Champagne region of France. How? Well, they each lay claim to a chalky soil and cool yet steadily warming climate, both of which are important to give the grapes their acidity, and therefore perfect conditions for great wine. Et voila!
Move forward thirty years, and this Fair Isle has a wine movement that is gaining significant praise – and guess where the best vineyards lie?
With this in mind – and it being the summer months – here is a bit of info on some of the wonderful wine-creators in the area. Be sure to sup a tipple…

MUM’S THE WORD: THE LAND OF LITTLE STREET
Martha, intrepid explorer aged two years & 7 months, visited Little Street in Camberley with mummy to see what community spirit is really like in the land of the little ones. First Impressions Visiting Little Street was an incredibly calm experience, almost serene when considering the venue is essentially a toddler paradise. The attending children interacted very well, both in group situations and when playing independently of other children, within the shared space. Occasional melt downs over access to certain toys / play areas did occur, but again these seemed to be shorted lived and swiftly dealt with by parents. The Streets are Alive with the Sound of Children The play zone is essentially split into numerous scaled down versions of every day environments. There is a café, hairdressers, doctor’s surgery, mini supermarket, building site and fire engine, plus a dressing up room and performance area equipped with musical instruments. As well as the dedicated dressing up zone, many of the areas of play have costumes to accompany the activity – doctors & nurses uniforms in the surgery etc. A huge amount of detail has been included in each area – a fact which I am sure results in very engrossed play from the attending children. Martha’s Favourite Area Martha immediately gravitated towards the doctor’s surgery and mini supermarket. I was the lucky recipient of a full medical courtesy of Martha and another little girl she befriended and, other than a somewhat over-zealous ear examination, I left the surgery in one piece……! To be honest, both areas were so well fitted out that I fear for the doctors / members of staff we encounter in Sainsbury’s in the future. I am sure Martha now believes she is fully equipped to work in either environment!
Is Parental Input Required? Basically, yes! There is a coffee shop and seating at one end of the venue and parents did make use of this area during the session. However, if you are not with your child/children all the time, I would say regular check-ins are advisable. The children really did interact very well together, but little squabbles are hard to avoid and much easier to defuse with a parents close by.
Ideal Age Range? The venue primarily targets under 7’s, but does not exclude older children. From my experience today I would say it is ideally suited to preschool children. Extra Info There is parking immediately outside the venue in the National Rail Car Park and parking is £1 for the day. Both adults and children must wear socks. Each children’s ticket admits one adult, but additional adult tickets can be purchased. Between sessions the venue shuts to allow staff to put each play zone back together again! As such, if you arrive early the venue will not be open. The café provides a range of ‘fun’ snacks (crisps, biscuits, fresh cake) plus hot and cold drinks. Overall Experience Excellent! So whether you’re more Rafa or Roger, there’ll be a surface to suit you. Moreover, there are 4 brand new, LTA compliant Mini Red tennis courts and, this being a tennis-related article, we haven’t even got the chance to tell you about 2 international standard croquet courts, Bowls, Bridge, Chess and Table Tennis facilities. Cranleigh Country Club Barhatch Lane, Cranleigh Top spec facilities greet you at Cranleigh Country Club which, as we’re sure you’ll gather, offers far more than just a place to have a knockabout. With 3 all-weather tennis courts – 2 of which are fully floodlit – you can play with your fellow members or enjoy a practice sesh against the ball machine. Constructed by hard-court specialists, the surfaces are truly high-end and particularly easy on the knees, hips and ankle joints and are slip-resistant in all conditions. Moreover, in these summer holiday months, there are junior camps and courses too. for More Information cranleighcountryclub.co.uk

Allen House Chertsey Road, Guildford Because sometimes you just want to grab a racquet and a friend (who preferably also has a racquet) and just play. Oxshott Tennis Club Steels Lane, Oxshott
A small club for the more discerning tennis practitioner, this hidden gem is located within Cobham’s rugby club and has three courts, and a fourth court with lighting is in the pipeline.
Ah Oxshott – where premier league footballers reside in droves (NB – not literally) and everything is green and pleasant. As you’d expect, their village sports club is suitably high-end, boasting 9 tennis courts – 2 dual-purpose hard surfaces, 7 with artificial grass and 7 floodlit courts.
However don’t be fooled by their tucked away location - there are still many options here, with open sessions, ladies mornings, competitive games and obviously court hire and coaching. Anyone from the age of 4 can be coached, should you be wishing to create a mini Murray.
This doesn’t mean all ages and abilities aren’t welcome, however, with coaching for beginners, ‘rusty racquets’, kids, intermediates and the serious serve and volley-er all present and correct, as well as more informal gatherings. As the name suggests a wealth of other sports can be played here too.

TEST DUMMY
By Tayler Willson
Woking Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club “YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS?!” was my humorous reply when I got asked to pop down to Woking Lawn Tennis and Croquet club and give the courts a spin. It gained almost no laughs whatsoever; no one even cracked a smile - maybe everyone at work hated me.
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Sport
Regardless of my impending HR case, I quite liked tennis and I was a pretty decent player at school, but that was seven years ago, before I gained the unavoidable weight that comes with becoming a fully-fledged adult. Upon arrival at the club I changed into my tennis get-up and greeted my coach for the day, Matt Trevail. He asked if I’d played before, and although tempted to dish out another John McEnroe belter, I reined it in and told him tales of my school glory days. We began on the acrylic courts, a similar surface to that I had previously played on, so I began confidently. I tested my forehand: rubbish, my backhand: even worse and my serve: laughable. I could see on Matt’s face that my previous confident attitude followed by my weak performance had severely disappointed him. After a few tweaks and words of advice, I found my feet and managed a rally of over ten. We swiftly moved onto the pristine grass courts, each blade of grass cut at equal length as if done with a pair of nail scissors. The surface, as I had anticipated, was soft and spongy, the ball wasn’t going to bounce anywhere near as high as on the acrylic – luckily on this surface I could dive. We began with a rally to give me a feel of the court, the shots were flowing and flowing well. I was avoiding my backhand – an avoidance Matt clearly noticed as he began to force me into dishing out flailing backhanders and the repetitive shout of “out”. The grass acted like a pair of slippers on my feet, it was comforting and relaxing – even if my arm was beginning to ache severely. Finally we headed to the brand new £120,000 clay courts, a surface that intrigued me. Matt explained that I’d have to change up my game; I’d have to adjust to the bounce even more and also learn to slide controllably.
SPORT
I slid well, no sweat, but combining this with hitting the ball was a little tougher and became a mental brick wall that I just couldn’t knock down. With the even softer surface, the ball was bouncing lower than on both of the previous courts, getting down and up was proving tiring. Matt was right (obviously); this seemed like a completely different game. We ended with a best-out-of-three-games-match on clay and I chose Matt to serve first. Within minutes I was one game down - he showed no mercy. Two minutes later and our match was over, my weak backhand combined with my child-like serve had let me down once more. Matt saw my weaknesses and pounced like a lion wearing tennis gear. After an hour of tennis in the searing heat, we called it a day. I was sweating, Matt wasn’t. I was tired, Matt wasn’t. It was going to take more than one hour of coaching to help me. The facilities Woking Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club provide are mightily impressive and with Wimbledon on the horizon, why not get your whites on and give it a spin?
Established over 100 years ago, Hook Heath’s Woking Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club is one of the finest clubs in Surrey. All levels and standards catered for, not only for tennis and croquet, but also for table tennis, bowls, chess and bridge too. This, combined with a friendly, warm atmosphere and a reasonable yearly membership cost, makes Woking Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club a must for the summer.

VISUALLY IMPAIRED CRICKET: GARY DUNFORD Are you visually impaired or know someone who is? Do you/ they want to play cricket? Good, we’re on the same page. Frimley Green Cricket Club has, since 2010, been running a Visually Impaired Cricket Club that’s come on leaps and bounds in recent years. We spoke to General Manager, Gary Dunford, on how it all began and how it’s different to the traditional game. Gary, how’d Frimley Green VI Cricket Club come about? “Well, my daughter is visually impaired and she’s always enjoyed cricket. However, all I knew of at the time was Blind Cricket, so I did some research and found a few Visually Impaired Cricket teams in Hampshire and Maidenhead – these being the closest to us in Surrey. “At the time I was part of the board at Frimley Green CC, so I contacted Surrey CCC and basically asked them: “What are you doing about this? However the stumps are the same. There are different rules depending on how impaired your vision is, but that’s something people can learn.
And how do people get involved? “We’re always looking for new members and if people do want to get involved or just give it a try they just need to contact me. It’s a matter of spreading the word really. We’re always growing and it doesn’t matter how old or experienced you are, everyone should give it a go”

How’ve you found participation since its creation in 2010? “At first, as you can imagine, it was a slow process. We were getting the word out there and that wasn’t easy. We gained around eight members within the first few months and it’s grown steadily from there. “One of our male players has been called-up to the Men’s

BUSINESS News EXPERIENCE GUILDFORD
INDEPENDENTS’ MONTH
4TH JULY -31ST JULY
National Retail Independents’ Day is on the 4th July (NB – deliciously ingenious marketing making Independents’ Day the same as, erm, Independence Day), and it’s fast becoming a recognised day in the retail calendar. Its aim is to support and celebrate the UK’s dynamic mix of independent businesses with the aim of encouraging more of us to shop locally. But this is Guildford, reader – a town that likes to go one better. Experience Guildford, the town’s Business Improvement District overlords, have made the whole of July Independents’ Month. Over 120 of Guildford’s independent businesses are signed up to the scheme, from Al Vicolo restaurant to the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre – and showing your loyalty to these businesses could be very worthwhile indeed.
Whenever customers purchase a product or service from three independent stores or businesses in Guildford, they will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 prize. Look out for the handy map EG have created to pinpoint all the businesses involved in Guildford’s Independents’ Day loyalty promotion, which also includes a branded tear off loyalty card. Maps are available in businesses throughout the town and can also be picked up from Guildford’s Tourist Information Centre. You simply need to collect three stamps from any combination of participating businesses by 31st July, fill in your details and post the tear off section to be entered into the prize draw to win a £100 prize.

There’ll be dedicated desks, casual memberships and lots more, all situated within the open-plan and private office spaces. There’ll also be a shared meeting room, a great kitchen and super-fast broadband.
OPENS IN JULY

The good people at Collaborate busy refurbishing the space at the moment, but you can see a sneak preview of the floor plan on their website. If you fit the bill and are looking for some office space in possibly the most promising town in the area, then be sure to get in touch. VISIT collaborate.works to find out more.

GAME CHANGER
Antaco Bring Carbon- Neutral Coal to Guildford – Next Stop, the World… In June’s Guide 2 magazine, we talked about Guildfordbased organisation Antaco’s attempt to pitch for a grant from Richard Branson as part of the ‘Pitch to Rich’ competition. We liked them so much, we had to give you their full story. They could just save the world…
T
he search has been on for decades to find more efficient carbonsaving technologies to turn biowaste into valuable fuel and energy. Billions have been invested in biofuels with only moderate success – until now. Antaco UK Ltd is one of only a handful of businesses advocating the use of the hydrothermal carbonisation process (HTC) as the most viable solution – and they’re based in Guildford.
with the added advantage that it is carbon neutral. This is hugely significant as the burning of coal is one of the biggest contributors to climate change. A carbon neutral coal that can simply replace dirty fossil coal in our existing power stations could offer a
With targets to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 and provide 15% of energy from renewables by 2020, the UK government certainly takes this technology seriously. So much so that the Department of Energy and Climate Change awarded Antaco a grant of
Surrey’s innovation epicentre – the Surrey Technology Centre, in Guildford. Dominik Peus is the founder and CEO of Antaco and has a background in biomedical research with numerous research awards to his name. Peus’ inspiration to start Antaco can be traced back to the South American rainforests where, as part of his medical training, Dr Peus spent time in a missionary hospital in the Amazon area in the remote areas of Peru. With frequent power cuts and a lack of clean water but within an abundance of biomass he wondered why such a place rich in natural resources were so reliant on expensive diesel generators.
“THE MOUNTAINS OF GARDEN WASTE WE SEE AT SLYFIELD TIP AND WASTE FOOD COLLECTED FROM GUILDFORD HOUSEHOLDS COULD ALL BE CONVERTED INTO CLEAN FUEL AND BURNT LOCALLY”
So what of the technology? HTC is able to replicate nature and turn any type of organic matter into a man-made coal, in hours rather than years! Biocoal, as it has been termed, is very similar to fossil coal
far cheaper solution for clean energy than other options such as building large wind farms. So the mountains of garden waste we see at Slyfield tip and waste food collected from Guildford households could all be converted into clean fuel and burnt locally.
£857,000 to build the UK’s first biocoal plant. No wonder the process has been described as ‘a key innovation of the Century!’ Established in 2011, multi-award winning Cleantech company, Antaco UK Ltd, is based at

Antaco at a Glance
Following the rediscovery of HTC in 2006 Peus set up his own laboratory in the back of his garage to test the process. Once convinced, he turned his attention to developing an engineering solution that would allow the production of biocoal on an industrial scale. Tapping into specialist knowledge within the chemical industry he patented key engineering processes to be used for commercial operation. With that, Antaco was born with Peus relocating the hub of operations to Guildford in 2011, where his entire team also resides. Since then the business has experienced significant progress. 2013 saw them voted Best European Early Stage Cleantech Company by the European Institute of Innovation
•
Antaco’s hydrothermal carbonisation process (HTC) turns ALL wet and dry biomass efficiently into fuel
•
Over the course of 4 to 10 hours the biomass is gradually converted into a solid biofuel called biocoal
•
Biocoal has a similar heat value to regular coal, far lower CO2 emissions and clean water is the only by-product
•
HTC can help save 50% of water treatment cost, 73% of energy use and carbon emissions by 95%
•
Composting achieves a carbon efficiency of about 10%. Antaco’s process achieves up to 90% carbon efficiency
and Technology (EIT) and in 2014 they raised a record amount on a crowdfunding platform. Now their first biocoal plant has been completed. Most recently, Antaco launched their fundraising campaign with Crowdbnk – a leading UK crowdfunding platform with a rigorous vetting procedure, with only 20% of businesses being chosen. Now everyone has the opportunity to be part of Antaco’s revolutionary carbon neutral coal story, with investors able to recoup up to 50% of their investment as Antaco is both EIS and BAFA (an EU 20% cash back scheme) approved. The potential for biocoal and Antaco’s technology is colossal; if only 5% of the EU’s biowaste was converted into biocoal it
would create a market worth £2.5bn. Energy providers even get paid to burn alternatives to fossil coal and the Renewable Heat Incentive provides subsidies for domestic and industrial heat producers to burn biocoal. But there are also plenty of export opportunities, and Antaco are already talking with a Swiss water company, German composting and even
a paper mill in South Africa. So investors could be handsomely rewarded in years to come. A local company is out there potentially saving the planet in perhaps the most realistic and convenient way possible – not only do Antaco provide a carbon neutral fuel, but they actively divert waste from landfill. Remember their name when this technology becomes the norm…

Guildford College – Education for All Guildford College is one of the best known education institutions in the area, but they offer more than A Levels, NVQs and degrees. One of our esteemed team took a day course in ‘New to Team Leading or a Newly Appointed Manager’. Here’s what they found… By Joe Payne There’s no doubt that in this fast-paced future that we live in that further training within our career is an absolute must. The advancement of pretty much every industry means that brushing up on your skills outside of the office is crucial; and management is no different. One drizzly Friday morning I donned my finest baseball cap (backwards), put my rucksack over one shoulder, grabbed my copy of ‘Education Clichés’ and headed to the campus. After coffee and introductions, we attendees discussed our respective industries and roles, what we hoped to gain and the topics we wanted to address. The ‘New to Team Leading or a Newly Appointed Manager’ course aims to help managers, or aspiring manager, learn more about your own leadership style and how it impacts on others and what are the key drivers that can help teams to perform to their best. Staff often get promoted to team leader because they have excelled in their positions. However, team leaders require additional skills – hence, this course is extremely useful for anyone new to management.
While it would be unsuitable to discuss our respective problems and areas for discussion – my team will be reading this, after all (hi guys!) – we then moved on to our learning style preferences, garnering some kind of knowledge about how we best respond to tasks. Something of an eye-opener here, but knowing about yourself is a key way to establish what kind of team leader you should aspire to be. Conveniently, discussing whether we wanted to improve our ‘leading’ or ‘management’ skills was next. Discussion proves that they are two surprisingly disparate terms, yet elements of both contribute to your management skills, which led to a more theoretical lecture about theories of leadership. This harked back to my (sadly long-passed) University days and provided interesting considerations for what you’d like to gain from the day. While interaction and discussion is hugely important, we are all adults on the course, and independent study in this kind of format is essential in moving forward in your career.
After a lunch of some very impressive sandwiches courtesy of the college, we students discussed further theories. This in turn addressed some of our respective issues, and we applied some hypothetical scenarios for discussion and how best to deal with them – bearing in mind that we all had to do so knowing the industry each other worked in, so this is a huge factor in decisionmaking and dispute resolution. All incredibly cathartic and useful. The day was then rounded off by a team exercise which involved debating, compromise, discussion and only a tiny bit of arguing as a means of practicing resolving issues. With a quick de-brief and bit of a summary, the day was done (and it went quickly – always a good sign). Speaking of summaries, mine is that when considering parts of your career that need further training or just a general tune-up, consider Guildford College as a place to do so. It definitely pays to keep the old grey matter fresh and add some strings to your bow.
