Here you might expect a jovial message of greetings and salutations from this delectable publication courtesy of a certain Mr D’Arcy. Alas, it is not he who writes this opening page – for you see it would appear that D’Arcy has found his Miss Bennet. It is I, his surrogate compiler/editor/writer/puppet, who writes to confirm that the old cad has wed and is currently enjoying the blissful surrounds of a far-flung country for his honeymoon. Aw. We should note that at this point, unlike Jane Austen’s classic, Mr D’Arcy’s first name is not Fitzwilliam, nor is his bride actually called Elizabeth Bennet. However, for the sense of poetic licence, we’re sure you’ll appreciate the comparison. Anyway, we at TGHQ will take this opportunity to offer our hugest and heartiest congratulations to the brainchild of this publication and assure him that we are, in fact, equipped to deal with his absence. This is the month of seasonal transition, children returning to school and (as the month draws on) a lengthy debate about the suitability of putting on the heating. In the words of Lord Eddard Stark – winter is coming… Anyway, whether you’re on a train, on the sofa, in your place of business or on the lavatory: read on! And most importantly, enjoy…

Your Community News PROPOSED GUILDFORD AND WOKING GREENBELT DEVELOPMENTS UNDER FIRE Plans to develop housing on sites near Mayford and Wisley have drawn heavy criticism from locals and organisations for their potential impact on residents, wildlife and the environment. Plans to develop land near Mayford Village came after Woking Borough Council’s consultation, launched on June 18 and finished on July 31, which made proposals for the large-scale redevelopment of significant parts of Woking town centre for both residential and commercial use, which would also require a certain amount of green belt land will be given up to accommodate some of the nearly 5,000 additional homes needed to in the borough by 2027.
For Mayford, this could mean sites such as land to the north and the west of Saunders Lane and Nursery Land adjacent to Egley road coming out of the green belt. Local residents have expressed alarm that the developments could cause gridlock in an area already constricted by three narrow railway bridges. Meanwhile, a decision on whether more than 2,000 homes can be built in the green belt at the former Wisley Airfield has been postponed for five months. The plans include, in addition to 2100 new homes, a primary school, shops, offices, travellers pitches and sports facilities.
Action Group, and a petition has attracted more than 128,000 signatures. Highways England, Surrey Wildlife Trust, Elmbridge Borough Council and the RSPB have also raised their own concerns as well as Surrey County Council’s own highways department. A spokesman for the borough council said: “The applicant has agreed to an extension of time for the determination of the application. “This is to allow the council time to consider the representations received and to obtain further

The walled garden, which belonged to Mrs Margaret Greville until 1942, is one of best and oldest examples of a traditional walled garden in the UK. Mrs Grenville used the property to entertain royalty and politicians and it was also the venue of the honeymoon of the future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. These days most visitors enjoy the fabulous rose garden, at its best in

COFFEE FOR A CAUSE:
SURREY SET TO GET NEW COMPLEX
MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING UK RETURNS OF 25TH SEPTEMBER
FOR PEOPLE WITH SEVERE LEARNING DISABILITIES
On Friday 25th September, people all over Surrey and the UK will be raising a mug in aid of Macmillan Cancer Care. The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. They ask people from all over the UK to host their own Coffee Mornings and donations on the day are made to Macmillan. Last year alone they raised £25 million and this year are aiming to raise even more. The first ever Coffee Morning happened back in 1990. The idea was simple: a few guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their cuppa to Macmillan in the process. It was so effective, the charity repeated it again the next year – only this time nationally. Since then, Coffee Morning has raised over £138 million for Macmillan. With thousands of coffee mornings taking place, you’re bound to find one near you. Just head to coffee.macmillan.org.uk for more information.
A new facility for people with severe learning disabilities is set to be built after Surrey County Council signed off plans to buy a former farm. On 29th July, the Cabinet today gave the go-ahead to purchase a former farm at Alford, near Cranleigh, with the intention of converting it into accommodation for up to 10 young adults. It comes after the county council was approached by the Simon Trust – led by the Lawrence family whose son Simon has serious learning disabilities – to identify suitable premises in Surrey. It is hoped that people will start moving in within two years.
BIDS POUR IN FOR SHARE OF COMMUNITY CASH Community groups across Surrey are going after a share of a £500,000 pot of cash to help people improve their local areas.
Surrey get schemes up and running that benefit their local communities.
Surrey County Council received 65 applications for money from the Community Improvements Fund before the deadline in July.
“It’s a great example of the county council and residents joining together to make Surrey an even better place to live. Even a small amount of cash can make a big difference in local communities and I’m looking forward to seeing many more groups get projects off the ground that will be of lasting benefit to residents.”
The fund was launched by leader David Hodge three years ago to help residents’ efforts to independently enhance their neighbourhood, and more than 80 projects have already received financial support, including a youth cafe, an outdoor gym and a community shop.
A panel of councillors will consider the applications, with Mr Hodge due to give the final sign-off in October 2015
The Surrey leader said: “I started this fund to help people across
WAVERLEY’S PARKS AWARDED FLAGS OF EXCELLENCE
Residents in Waverley are benefitting from award-winning parks. This summer two parks in Waverley were ranked among the best in the UK after being awarded flags of excellence. Both Farnham Park and Broadwater Park in Farncombe received Green Flag Awards – the mark of a quality park or green space - the third year running Farnham Park has received the award, but which is a first for Broadwater Park. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and
has excellent facilities. Both parks are managed by Waverley Borough Council, with help from local volunteers. As well as having Green Flag status, Farnham Park is a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI), an area of Historic Landscape Value (AHLV) a Grade 2 listed Historic Park and Garden (English Heritage designation), and a Local Nature Reserve (LNR). Broadwater Park in Farncombe covers 29 hectares and has a large lake, woodland, open grass areas, and sports and play facilities.

For all of Woking’s reinvigorated, forward thinking outlook, it remains a town with a long and rich history. It contains several nationally-significant heritage sites, such as Brookwood Cemetery, Woking Palace, the Shah Jahan Mosque, and the Peace Garden at the Muslim Burial Ground. Also, two of the borough’s most historic places of worship will be welcoming visitors, at the churches of St. Peter and St. Mary-the-Virgin. Often described as ‘hidden treasures’, these sites offer a rare glimpse into Woking’s fascinating past. But Woking’s modern landscape isn’t being entirely left out. Visitors on these days can also enjoy more modern buildings, such as WWF-UK’s award-winning headquarters The Living Planet Centre and the Lightbox nearby. They can even peep behind the scenes at the New Victoria Theatre for free. For more information about Heritage Open Days pick up a leaflet which also features a handy map from the Civic Offices, Woking Library or any of the participating venues. celebratewoking.info

Care in the Community With winter fast approaching, a familiar topic returns to the spotlight – just how well do we treat the elderly in our community?
I
t’s now well known that, in the UK as a whole, the collective population is aging. Over the period from 1985 to 2010 the number of people aged 65 and over in the UK increased by 20% to 10.3 million. Surrey reflects this trend, with 18.05% of the county’s population aged 65 and over in 2013, in comparison to England estimates of 17.43%. The politics of how we are equipped to deal with a steadily aging populous has been well-discussed; but what about how to take care of our elderly nearest and dearest? The fact is that the Surrey population aged 70 and over is set to explode in the coming years, with the subsequent health-related issues likely to put a massive strain on resources. We in Surrey are fortunate in that, as an affluent county, there are numerous care homes in which to help out. But we can do more to help the aging population of Surrey and
beyond in other ways too. In recent months we at TGHQ have been emphasising the importance of volunteering – so why not do so at a care home? Many of the care homes in the area would appreciate people offering some of their free time to aid them. Young people can do so for work experience or Duke of Edinburgh Awards schemes too. The work of Age UK Surrey could not happen without the group of dedicated volunteers of all ages. These people are involved in every aspect of their work in providing care and opportunities for older people to make their lives better and easier. So if you have the time, then why not commit some of it to this worthy cause? Age UK Surrey has numerous volunteer job opportunities. Call 01483 503 414 or visit ageuk.org.uk/surrey to find out more.

HISTORY
THOMAS HOWARD Last month we learnt all about the Warennes, which got me wondering about other blue-blood types our county has. Then I found out that The Earl of Surrey is in Norfolk. Heraldry makes about as much sense as a lion getting more press than a despotic dictator in the same country. But I digress… By Will Knowlton Back in the day, the Earl of Surrey was a good and loyal man. In 1485 Henry Tudor decided he fancied a bit of kingly action and took hold of these fair isles by way of Wales. At this time the Earl of Surrey was Thomas. Tommy, being a team player got his crew together and headed out to join up with King Richard III (body in Car Park geezer) for a good old fashioned ruck. Tom took up position on the right flank and got stuck in. However, the battle was not too old when Tom was wounded and CASEVAC’d back to the historical equivalent of a field hospital; think more leeches and moss than Ceelox and Israeli Bandages. Having seen this movie, we know that Richard ended up brown bread, so Tom stuck to the usual response of the time; he did legs. Even without the help of the world’s biggest network of CCTV, he was caught fairly quickly. Meanwhile, the new King Henry was busy telling parliament that he wanted the date of the start of his reign to be the day before the battle. This way, everyone who backed NCP spokesperson Ricardo would be guilty of treason, so he could hack all their heads off and start afresh with a new (and now slightly intimidated) bunch of Lords and Earls. Parliament, being
that wonderful and bureaucratic animal that it still is, told him to do one and made the official start date the day after the battle. Still, everyone had to go to the new Headmaster’s office and explain themselves and when it was old Tommy’s turn he pointed out that he was loyal to the King, whoever that was. We salute the rank, not the man as it were. Luckily for Tom, he was a popular chap and that coupled with the fact that he clearly wasn’t a complete twit meant that Henners decided to send him up North to police the Scottish border and keep the White Walkers out. Basically, stay the **** out of the way. A few (cold) years later Tom was still there doing a pretty good job at the tender age of 70, fuelled by loyalty and Chips & Gravy. By then the old Sperminator himself, Henry VIII, was on the throne and decided to have a crack at France. King James IV of Scotland thought this was a good opportunity to have a go at invading England, so it was left up to Tom and his missmatched band of Night’s Watch types to defend the land. Which they did good-style in September of that year at a place called at Flodden Field. When I say he beat the Scots, I mean he opened up
a whole truck-load of Whoopass. Post-match scores for Scotland were not good: King James dead, 7 big league clan chiefs dead, 33 pretty big time Lords dead, loads of knights dead. Oh and add to that about 10,000 soldiers too. Proper decisive result. Understandably, Henry was deeply impressed and made Tom the Duke of Norfolk which was a good promotion. And from that day to this, the title of Earl of Surrey is given to eldest son of the Duke of Norfolk. The things you learn…

THE ACADEMY OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC TURNS 20 For two decades the ACM has trained students to forge dream careers at every level of the music business. As the academy celebrates its 20th anniversary, we take a look at the remarkable journey of this iconic Guildford institution…
S
ince the birth of rock and roll, musicians have trained the next generation of singers and instrumentalists from makeshift classrooms in bedrooms and garages and home studios. But a little over twenty years ago, a guitar tutor from Woking had a vision to bring contemporary music education and the music business closer together, giving budding musicians, songwriters and creative professionals a huge advantage in a notoriously competitive industry. While the Academy of Contemporary Music wasn’t the first of its kind, the school Phil Brookes founded in 1995, in a small building in the heart of Guildford, established a footprint that has seen it become a centre of music excellence and, with its recent melding with industry giant Metropolis Studios, a ma jor force in the music business with global aspirations. But more than that, in its two decades the ACM has arguably become inextricably woven into the fabric of Guildford, benefitting the local economy and infusing the town’s arts scene and community, becoming one of the town’s most
recognisable organisations in the process. Not bad for an idea that began in a home studio in Woking, and guitar lessons for about £10 an hour. Bruce Dickinson, lead guitarist with 90s rock band the Little Angels and one of the Academy’s first tutors recalls the days when the school was in its infancy: “It was an amazing time but music education twenty years ago was like being involved in mobile phones in 1995. It was a new thing. There was a real need for this sort of music education, as the universities and the music colleges in London were too elitist and focused on non-commercial music. We just thought we wanted a more rock and roll option that reflected the real world.” In 2000, the academy took up home in Guildford’s iconic Rodboro Building, with a launch attended by pop luminaries and the inventor the Stratocaster guitar, Leo Fender. Thanks to partnerships with local musical instrument retailer Andertons and ma jor industry brands, the new look academy was, and remains, a lively warren of neon-lit metal, brick and

mortar, studios and practice booths, gleaming with musical instruments and cutting edge production equipment and the promise of exciting careers in the music business ahead. The effect upon visitors was spellbinding then and hasn’t diminished twenty years on. But within this dream factory the very serious business of, well, the music business is drummed into students through the collective experience of some of the UK’s finest musicians, managers, producers and publishers. The ‘learning by doing’ ethos espoused since the Academy’s start continues, with highly practical lessons where collaboration is encouraged alongside discussion and debate. Recently graduated production student Doug Statham told me: “I came in not knowing much and left knowing more than I ever thought I could.” However, I was curious to know how competitive the atmosphere was among such creative students. “You’ll sit in a class and someone’s work will be amazing,” said Doug, “but that makes me want to be better. And everyone does that for each other. Everyone always gets on.” Without doubt, it’s an environment that has nurtured some of the brightest talents to have entered the industry in
“
the academy took a massive step towards its founding vision of providing unprecedented access to the heart of the industry. Europe’s largest independently owned recording studio and complex, Metropolis has been Mecca for some of music’s greatest artists, including Queen, the Rolling Stones, Madonna and Rihanna. “The music industry at one level is ubiquitous,” says Metropolis’, and now ACM’s, owner Kainne Clements. “Where’s the opportunity for people to have sustainable careers? Metropolis is like a spyglass into every aspect of the industry, from publishing, recording, to management and performance, so now we are addressing the gap between what education does and what industry needs.”
“
We wanted a more rock and roll option that reflected the real world.
”
But his plans go deeper than just the collective expertise, training and employment pathways provided by both academy and studio. Clements’ designs include employing psychology tutors to train students in the more esoteric properties of music: “What draws people unconsciously into a song? What is it that makes you feel positive, or negative? To know that you’ve got to understand states of mind and emotion.”
Metropolis studios are a spyglass into every aspect of the industry
a generation. Newton Faulkner and Ed Sheeran cut their teeth here, as has DJ and producer Zomboy, to say nothing of the countless musicians and professionals now working at every level of the business. Over 10,000 students have walked through the ACM’s doors since its inception and walked out again with diplomas or degrees, but the grit and grind of forging a career in music has never been sugar coated. “The world is much more complicated than it was 20 years ago,” says Dickinson. “You have to take responsibility and have a great product whether that’s music or management. You’ve got to have the goods.” Thanks to the new alliance with legendary studio Metropolis in 2013,
With plans to grow the student body by nearly 20%, and with four international centres under the ACM banner being considered, the future for this remarkable school, a place where talents are honed and dazzling careers take their first steps, looks more compelling than ever. If the academy continues its tra jectory it could soon be as indispensable to the music industry as it is to the identity of Guildford itself.
”
“I’m as excited as the students to see how this develops over the next few years,” says Clements. “If we get this core model right, it’ll be the envy of the sector. I may be inclined to open another ACM, but it’s not my objective to franchise or grow for the sake of it; this is all about this incredibly special place here in Guildford.”

Python, Travel Writer and Britain’s Nicest Man: it’s fair to say Michael Palin has led an incredible life. Ahead of his October visit to Woking as part of the Thirty Years Tour, we conversed about why he started detailing his life, why journals are important and his three decades of published diaries – the Life of Michael, if you will…

You’re coming to Woking as part of your national tour celebrating thirty years of your diaries – but have you always kept a diary? Did you keep a journal as a child or is it something you developed as an adult? Like a lot of people I half-heartedly started to keep a diary at school for a while. My parents always gave me a schoolboy diary which had lots of interesting facts about cricket and bridge building and things like that. It had a little section for each day that I would laboriously fill in for the first couple of months – one I kept right up until May, which was quite a feat – but in the end life would always become too interesting to keep a diary, so it fell by the wayside. I think I always just enjoyed recording things; whenever I travelled I took little notebooks. But it truly began in 1969 when our first son was born. When he was a small lad, about six months old, I was still a heavy smoker. I realised that smoking and little kids weren’t compatible so I virtually quit cold turkey – I got such a surge of willpower that I thought ‘what else can I do?’; so I decided to keep a diary. That was in April 1969, and funnily enough it was a bit of a limbo in my career. I’d been working very hard in comedy shows from ‘65 to ’68, but nothing was really happening at that point: but then Cleese rung up and talked about a new comedy show. So coincidentally writing a diary came about with the start of Monty Python, and I’ve been keeping a diary right up until today…
What kind of diary writer are you? Are you a bullet pointer or do you write a kind of mini-story? It’s a bit of a narrative of the day, so I like to feel it’s telling a kind of story. One thing leads to the other, as though it’s been preordained; of course it’s not like that at all, it’s a series of disconnected events. But I like to describe the main things that I did the day before and it is like telling a bit of a story - and you feel like you have a bit more of a purpose if you’ve written it down! The diary mainly records where I’ve been and I try and keep a balance between family and work; sometimes external things come into play, though far less than one might imagine. Food and drink – there’s always rather too much of. I’ve published diaries before and people say ‘all you do is drink and eat!’ but I’ve been lucky. A lot of our work from Python onwards was done over a glass of wine or beer and a meal – that’s part of it!
Naturally, diaries hold intimate insights into the author’s character to those reading it, but they also offer the author themselves an opportunity to reflect. Has there even been a moment that you’ve read back and had it really flood back as if it was happening again – joy, regret or sadness? A lot of interesting entries were around moments where I lost people I was very fond of, like my mum or [fellow Monty Python member] Graham Chapman or my sister. I kept these in my diary because I felt that it was really important to try and mark those moments by recording my own feelings. It’s most interesting how grief hits you, and very often it isn’t straight away; initially you can be very practical. But suddenly there may be a moment that you will find something that reminds you, in a very poignant way, that the person you’re fond of is no longer there. It was times like that that I thought that my recollections would have been rather fuzzy without the diary. But it’s work you’ve done too. When you’re filming shows such as GBH - which was a very long series I did for channel 4 in 1991 – it was a good piece of work and I was very proud of it. But I look back and I think of all the obstacles I was putting in my way – ‘can I do this, am I doing this right?’ – and it was interesting to see that one didn’t just waltz into it and it wasn’t just another job. Each one required some soul-searching before you got it right. That’s in pretty much everything I do. I think one thinks that you get used to it, but you don’t really – it’s the same process each time you take on anything.
In tandem with the release of your book on tour, on your website themichaelpalin.com you’ve launched ‘Diary Corner’ offering advice and tips for fellow journal writers – is this an agony uncle type role you’re embarking on?! *Laughs* Well it’s trying to publicise the joys of keeping a diary really! Well, not just the joys; when I began, I just remember that it was difficult and I kept thinking ‘Am I really going to write this down?!’ But after a couple of years or so it becomes a habit and now it’s something that I can’t begin my day without – recording the day before.
So finally, in your own words – why keep a diary? I’ve just found it so useful to have that material there. I think for future historians, looking back on our time to get people’s everyday story through their diaries would be an incredibly important resource.
But also, it’s pleasant to do – I value my time more, because I consider what I’ve done with it and days don’t go back into a complete fog. You can actually say ‘on this day I did that’ and it reminds you in an honest way about what really happened. You tend to look back at events happening in a smooth curve, but it’s actually lots of ups and downs and blips on the grass. It’s done a lot for me; I feel the balance of my life has been much improved by keeping a diary. So I’m just trying to tell others that I think that a diary – and I don’t mean a blog, I mean your own personal thoughts that you write by hand – you’re not necessarily going to show it to anybody, which is important. Nowadays we feel that we must lay out everything straight away; with a diary you can do that and look back over the years. And then you can say ‘God yes, I got that wrong, I got this wrong, I’m glad I never told anybody about that!’ *Laughs*

The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre at
After half a century of world class comedy and drama, the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, on the leafy banks of the River Wey, remains one of Guildford’s most cherished cultural landmarks. As the theatre celebrates its anniversary this season, we look at its journey and the highlights coming up over the next several months.
I
t goes without saying that Guildford’s theatrical roots stretch back further than 1965, the year that the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre first opened its doors. The year 1619 in fact, when the first theatrical record appears referencing the six shillings that the townsfolk had raised. Not in support of local arts, mind you, but in order to bribe a troupe of travelling players NOT to perform in the town. Thankfully, their miserly obstruction of the arts didn’t hold sway for long, but that collaborative community spirit has, albeit for more creative endeavours. Indeed, it has been the catalyst for a ripe theatrical heritage that dates back to the first purpose built theatre in Market Street in 1789. It was also the force that saw Guildford’s iconic Yvonne Arnaud Theatre rise from the figurative ashes of the former Guildford Repertory Theatre, on the site of the old Borough Hall, which burned down in 1963. Bereft of a local theatre, the community rallied raising nearly 70% of the original cost in covenants and gifts. With land provided generously cheap
by the Guildford Corporation (now the Borough Council) the new Yvonne Arnaud Theatre (YAT) opened its doors in 1965 in a ceremony led by founding chairman former Mayor of Guildford Archie Graham-Brown and actress Vanessa Redgrave. In fact, the very first production was A Month in the Country starring two stage titans of their day, Ingrid Bergman and Vanessa’s father, Michael Redgrave. Their appearance would set a precedent over the next fifty years, as the theatre drew productions crafted by the greatest playwrights and performed by some of the most talented actors that the UK has seen, including Dame Joan Plowright, Sir Alec Guinness, Dame Judi Dench and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Under the directorships of Laurier Lister, then Val May and currently James Barber (see right), the YAT has in that time established itself as a diverse and vibrant canvas for an eclectic mix of classical and contemporary work ranging from Sophizhat and Shakespeare, Webster, Ibsen and Chekov to Coward, Priestley,
Ayckbourn, Hare and Stoppard. Alongside numerous premieres of new plays it presents musicals, small and mid-scale opera and ballet. That would have been enough for most regional theatres, but a defining aspect of the YAT is the contribution it makes in nurturing new talent and encouraging smaller productions with the introduction of its Mill Studio in 1993. Other artistic fields are represented including the unmissable film seasons and artist exhibitions. And what family doesn’t enjoy the local institution that is the Yvonne Arnaud Christmas Pantomime? Regional theatres have faced huge challenges in the 21st century, with many closing their doors due to financial pressures and dwindling audiences. That the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre has not only survived but thrived over the years, we think speaks volumes about the passion that their team pours into every production. It remains a Guildford Theatre built by and for the people of Guildford, and long may it continue, for another fifty years and beyond.

TALKING TO: DIRECTOR
James Barber
What does your role as a Theatre Director entail? I suppose it’s a bit of everything. I take responsibility for how we develop. I work with the heads of department -everybody really- all the areas, and we try and steer it in the right direction. I’ve got the overall say on the programming. And we produce our own shows; I choose the show, cast it and hire a director and so forth. So it’s a very varied role which is why it’s such a joy.
What makes the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre so special?
Who was Yvonne Arnaud? Although she never lived to see or perform at the theatre that would proudly bear her name, Yvonne Arnaud was a renowned star of English theatre for almost as long as her namesake has been delighting audiences. Born Germaine Jeanne Arnaud in 1890 in Bordeaux, Yvonne Arnaud grew into an exceptional musician, a concert pianist who would tour Europe and America from the ages of 16 and 21. In 1911 she fell in love with the theatre in London and became a star overnight for her 1912 leading role in musical comedy The Girl in the Taxi at the Lyric Theatre. Her career took in a score of films as well as tours entertaining the troops during World War II. With her husband Hugh Mclellan, she adopted Guildford as her home and lived on a farm in Effingham from 1937 and, in 1956, a house on London Road. Two years later she would die after being taken ill while working in her garden. As a passionate patron of theatre in Guildford, her husband gave permission for her name to be given to the new theatre built in 1965. Hugh, a member of the board of directors and a trustee at the Yvonne Arnaud died in 1982, but a memorial stone to both him and his celebrated wife remains on the ground of St Martha’s on the Hill.
The wonderful thing about the Yvonne Arnaud is that it is truly Guildford’s theatre. It wasn’t some big commercial undertaking, it wasn’t a chain of theatres, nor was it a civic theatre. It was a theatre built by theatre-goers who lived locally and wanted a theatre of their own, and it was the perfect example of cooperation between local people and their local borough council.
You’ve been with the YAT for 35 years now. How did you go from working backstage to managing the entire theatre? I can’t quite remember what age I was when I started, maybe 21 or 22? But I was sweeping the stage back then. I think I learned so much working backstage. Year after year, so many amazing people came through -actors, directors, playwrights- and you do kind of learn how things are done. I just worked my way up, really. After all this time, I’m so lucky and really blessed.
What challenges has the theatre faced over the years? We’re not alone in this; there are so many regional theatres that struggle financially. We’ve had several occasions in the past where we thought we had come within an inch of closing. But somehow through a combination of local support, local businesses, generous trustees and individuals, and perhaps a little bit of political manoeuvring, we managed to keep it going. Guildford Borough has invested millions into the theatre over its life, and without them we would have surely closed.
The theatre’s seen some true legends of the stage over the years. Who sticks out in your memory? Oh dear, it’s invidious to name names… but I did have a very bizarre week spent looking after Sir Lawrence Olivier in the eighties. He was a very old man and wasn’t very well and his wife Joan Plowright was in a show here, and I was put in charge of him. He’d get a little bit muddled sometimes but he was still naughty and wicked and funny and really quite wonderful. And I’ve worked with some wonderful women like Vanessa Redgrave and my good friend Penelope Keith who has been a great supporter of the theatre over the years. I’ve been really spoiled.

Now in its fourth year, the G Live Beer Festival returns on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th September…
T
he G Live Beer Festival has already become something of a tradition amongst local ale-sippers. Taking place in what is usually a glorious late summer weekend (fingers crossed…), this gathering of CAMRA die-hards, casual tipplers and cider-quaffers has proved to be a huge hit with the people of Guildford and beyond. And rightly so! Those of you who have attended the event before will appreciate its greatness, but if you’re new to this particular partay (additional ‘a’ deliberate), then let us regale you with what’s in store. The event takes place across two days, with an evening session on Friday 11th September and both afternoon and evening sessions on Saturday 12th. First and foremost, let’s talk about the beverages. The beers will of course be the staple – the best and brightest from across Surrey and the South-East will be bringing their stouts, bitters, lagers, milds and other such tipples. The benchmark of a beer festival is, naturally, the beers, and G Live will be providing you with dozens. Next, ciders – appley goodness need not be confined to the West Country, dear reader. Shifting east, we still see many a scrumpy to have a try of. Whether it’s a fruity one or some of that murky stuff that makes your mouth sting, there’s something for you. But you will need something to absorb the alcohol, will you not? While we would never condone irresponsible drinking here at TGHQ, we can always recommend food to help line your stomach so you have an additional beverage or two. So how does a hog roast and BBQ sound? Ruddy delicious is how. Expect a delicious pig in a bun (and naturally a veggie option too) with trimmings, but be warned – time your arrival to the food source correctly, lest the queue get the better of you.
Now naturally a beer festival cannot be complete without live music. As the beer hits and you become chattier, you need a jaunty backdrop do you not? Well here is what to expect: Friday evening: The Salts. A co-operative of seasoned musicians, they create what is fast becoming one of the most exciting and energetic folk concepts of recent times. Individually The Salts, fronted by twice BBC Young Folk Finalist Lee Collinson-James, have circumnavigated the Commonwealth with tours of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, Singapore and Hong Kong. Not to be missed. Saturday Afternoon: The Nefarious Picaroons. Those of you who saw the Picaroons back at our Big Busk on Guildford High Street in March will know how much fun this lot are. Describing themselves as Folked-Up-PopStomp, we think you can guess that you’re in for a hoot when you check out the ‘roons… Saturday Evening: Uke Jam. What more is there to say about Uke Jam? Having brought giddy delights at the Guildford Beer Festival earlier in the summer and with a regular slot in The Britannia pub, if you’re a Guildford regular you have almost certainly seen them. So if you were sitting on the metaphorical fence, have we convinced you? We’re sure we have. Tickets are £12 per session (including a branded glass and programme) and naturally you must be over 18 to attend.
Find out more, including additional music acts and a full beer list, at glive.co.uk.

WHERE TO EAT: BRIT
By Rich Lee Still going strong since launching in 2013, we returned to Britten’s to see what’s cooking at one of Guildford’s few truly independent restaurants…
H
as it really been over a year and a half? When we last visited Chef Dan Britten’s restaurant at the beginning of 2014, not long after it had launched, it felt like a gamble that sorely needed to work. Not just for the married father of two and former Masterchef contestant himself, but for Guildford too. In a town with only a handful of entrenched independent restaurants and a glut of here today-gone tomorrow chains, a fresh new option was never more needed, particularly one that served true modern British food. Fortunately for both the chef and the town, Britten’s hasn’t just survived but thrived, winning a loyal clientele drawn to Dan’s vision of a friendly neighbourhood restaurant. And some damn fine cooking too. That’s fine cooking rather than fine dining. While it’s common for many ‘new’ chefs to stroke an ego before they’ve earned one, Dan Britten has kept his food simple and honest from the start,
although as we’ll see, there’s some fierce technique and not a little flair to be found here. The restaurant itself has seen some welcome if subtle changes over time. Already an intimate dining space to begin with, inside Britten’s interior has a cheerier, more confident look than before, from the little trendy traces of ‘upcycling’ to artworks by local artists (apparently popular as souvenirs among a few customers they’ve had.) So much for the restaurant, had the menu changed much since our last visit? Britten’s revels in its individuality and Dan’s almost geekish obsession with whatever happens to be good right now. Which means that menus change almost weekly depending on season and whim, “Just to annoy people,” he tells me later with a wink. The a la carte menu reads without fuss or fanfare and presents staple English ingredients for this time of year. But when the plates meet the table a real show begins to unfold. The first
act? A dish of scallops, all pan-kissed edges and luscious, tender centres sat amid genius dabs of squid ink aioli humming sweetly with garlic. Little flecks of crispy chicken skin added a crafty, salty crunch that lifted this way beyond the tired, perfunctory scallop dishes of many other restaurants. Sweet, earthy, lightly seared pigeon breast fanned over braised peas and pancetta would have been good enough, but with the addition of a rich dark orb of black pudding coated in tickly golden breadcrumbs this dainty little starter was, in truth, a colossal tease. So much so that we indulged in another: a plate of English asparagus with confit egg yolk and brioche croutons that was a simple yet utterly sumptuous taste of spring and summer. Mains brought a delicate little slab of pan-fried sea trout, more of that gorgeous buttery-fresh English asparagus and broad beans balanced with tangy slivers of pickled beetroot.

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Food-and-Drink
TTEN’S, GUILDFORD So far, so light right? Any heavy lifting was left to a plate of tenderest Etherley Farm chicken breast and silky-rich Anna potatoes, all drizzled with sweet dark jus and a heady onion cream. £17.50 asks a lot from a chicken dish but this one delivered magnificently, leaving me to chase the sauce around the plate with a fingertip. I’m not proud. Speaking with Dan after the meal, he mused in typically modest fashion that they didn’t really consider themselves ‘dessert chefs.’ Don’t believe a word of it. A pudding of spiced strawberries tumbled into torn pepper scones with a juicy fresh strawberry ice cream over clotted cream was a big silly grin on a plate. Like an afternoon tea that had stepped on a landmine. As a neighbourhood restaurant, Britten’s continues to hit all the right notes and is as good for a decadent brunch as it is a fine lunch or evening meal out. With an agile menu that celebrates what’s bang in season, and at real bang for your bucks, it’s the restaurant that Guildford has needed for a long time.

TALKING TO… Stu Henshall “Paul Hollywood’s like a good cookie. Hard on the outside but soft on the inside.”
He was the ‘punk rock baker’ tipped for success on television phenomenon the Great British Bake Off, but Stu Henshall’s elaborate efforts in the first heat met with an early, bitter defeat. Not to be held back, the Guildford-based musician and married father of two extols his passion and formidable talent for food on his fantastic blog, the Alternative Kitchen. We spoke to Stu about his Bake Off experience and his unique approach to cooking…
Punk Rock to cookery - which came first? I have always been a big fan of filling my face with goodies, and leftovers from my mum’s restaurant as a kid, but the music bug took hold at ten and became the obsession for the next twenty years. The food bug followed in my twenties when I moved away from homecooked meals and the need to feed myself became a necessity. I then realised how much I loved the preparation almost as much as consuming the results. Over the next ten years my love of baking and cooking acted as relief after hours in the studio. How did you get chosen for the Great British Bake Off? I had a gap in my touring schedule when the deadline was coming up so I thought I’d take a punt and apply. My sisters, various friends, and colleagues had been pestering me to do it, so I thought it would get them off my back. And then I got the call for a phone interview. After that there were many stages of auditions. I understand that thousands applied so I am made up I made it into the tent. Having met the judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry, and hosts Mel & Sue, how have they surprised you in real life? Amazing meeting those guys. I was actually
terrified of Mary Berry. I wanted her to be pleasantly surprised by my bakes. Nervewracking. Sue and Mel are unbelievably genuine and twice as awesome as they come across. Had a few good chats with Sue about tats and Mel was great at putting you at ease. Paul’s like a good cookie. Hard on the outside but soft on the inside. He’s a pretty cool guy really. Were you at all prepared to leave the show so early? I went into the competition to try and shake things up by putting an ‘alternative’ twist on the classics. I didn’t think my appearance would be limited to the one weekend at all but the judgement didn’t go my way and I’ve got to respect their decision. Where did your gateaux go wrong for you on the show? They really didn’t dig my addition of beetroot but I didn’t want to soak the sponges in kirsch. I think it works really well and no odder than carrot in a cake but they weren’t keen. What creations did you have planned for further along in the series? I had an arsenal of oddities that I was looking forward to showing them like Chorizo, Orange, and Black Olive Biscotti but

What have you taken from your experience on the Great British Bake Off? So much but mainly that I know I deserved to be there and that I may have a little proving to do. Watch this space!
As a Guildfordian, what are your impressions of the food scene around here and where do you like to eat out? You know what, more and more food festivals are springing up and I love the farmers market in Guildford for all the little independent bakers and grocers. It is tough for the independents to get a look in on the high street due to high rates and chain completion, but there are a couple that are great like Al Vicolo (Swan Lane).
What’s the idea behind your blog The Alternative Kitchen? Making up recipes is much like writing a song. There are similar components to both but what makes them original is pulling your inspirations and applying them. The Alternative Kitchen is a place I can put my recipes up for people to try

STU HENSHALL’S PEANUT BUTTER AND HONEY CINNAMON ROLLS RECIPE Buttery Danish Pastry filled with crunchy peanut butter and orange blossom honey with a sharp lemon icing Prep time: 12 hrs | Cooking time: 20 mins
Danish Pastry
Filling
1.
1.
2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
500g Strong white bread flour 10g Sea salt 80g Caster sugar 10g Fast action yeast 2 count Medium eggs beaten 125 ml water 250g Cold unsalted butter
2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
250 g Crunchy peanut butter 250 g Honey (I used orange blossom honey) 2 tbsp Ground Cinnamon 1 count Medium egg beaten 1 count Lemon juiced 1 cup Icing sugar
Method: The Pastry
The Filling
•
Add flour to a large bowl, place salt and sugar on one side and yeast on the other
•
Roll the pastry out to 80cm long, this time with the long side facing you, and 25cm wide
•
In a jug add milk and water, zap in a microwave until lukewarm, and add beaten eggs
•
•
With a hand mixer slowly add wet ingredients to dry. Once combined increase speed and mix for 5 minutes
Dust the cinnamon over the pastry, mix the honey and peanut butter, and spread over pastry leaving a cm closest to you
•
Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and roll into an oblong ball, place in a plastic bag and put in the fridge for one hour
•
Roll the pastry away from you into a large roll
•
•
Between two 80cm long pieces of grease proof paper bash your butter into a rectangle of 20cm by 40cm
Slowly cut the roll into 5cm segments and place on two large baking trays leaving space to grow
•
Remove your dough from the fridge and roll out to a 22cm by 60cm rectangle with the short side facing you
•
Leave to prove for half an hour, brush with egg wash, and bake at 170°C for 20 minutes
•
Place the butter on the two thirds closest to you and fold the uncovered third at the top towards you and then fold the edge closest to you over the top. Pinch the sides together and return to the bag and then the fridge for an hour. This is a single book turn don’t you know!
•
•
Remove the dough from fridge and with the short edge facing you roll the dough to the same 20cm by 60cm rectangle as before. Complete another single turn and repeat this step twice more
Once cooled add enough icing sugar to the juice of one lemon to thick pouring consistency and ice the rolls. If you can wait for icing set then you are a better person than me
•
•
After the final turn return to the fridge overnight or for at least 8 hours
The pastry recipe makes 1kg of pastry. You can always come up with your own filling and/or shape the pastry into any other shape. More ideas to follow.

SPORTS NEWS WHAT’S ON THIS MONTH
Woking FC vs Cheltenham Town Saturday 19 September | Kingfield Stadium, 15:00pm Home form is key for the Cards if they are to improve on last year’s eighth position finish. Garry Hill’s side looked on course for at least a play-off position until a horrendous festive period saw their hopes dashed. They spent the remainder of the campaign playing catch-up, but never regained the momentum that saw them shoot up the table early on. After some ins and outs this summer, the Kingfield

orld Cup’s throw up new names and new faces. Jona Lomu came to light in 1995, Wales’ Shane Williams in 2003 and Sam Warburton in 2011, but who will it be this year? Here’s a few names to look out for…
JOSH STRAUSS (Scotland)
With a beard like this fella, he’s a hard one to miss. He’s been Glasgow’s driving force at No 8 for a couple of seasons now and the big South African is likely to be a significant asset to Scotland at the World Cup having qualified on the three-year residency rule.
LOANN GOUJON (France) He may sound like a breaded chicken strip, but I dare you to tell him that. He’s 6ft 4ins and 17st 5lbs. He gave an indication of his threat by making 99 metres on 11 Roman raids against Italy in an impressive Six Nations. HENRY SLADE (England) Could the Exeter playmaker prove the missing link in the English midfield? Can slot in at fly-half, centre or fullback, but it’s at 12 that he could really bring another dimension.
NEHE MILNER-SKUDDER (New Zealand) Played a big part in the Hurricanes making the Super 15 final and with Israel Dagg having struggled for fitness and form this year, the uncapped 24-year-old could be a bolter for the 15 spot. BEN MCCALMAN (Australia) He’s playing the best rugby of his life and has just been named the outstanding Western Force player of the season and handed a flexible three-year Australian RU deal that allows him to go to Japan after the World Cup - such is the value they place on him.

SURREY SPORTS PARK: Surrey Scorchers open their campaign against Bristol Flyers on September 19th Surrey Scorchers are the brand new basketball team, owned and managed by Surrey Sports Park. Their previous incarnation as Surrey United had a disappointing 2014/15 season, finishing bottom of the British Basketball League (BBL). Now under new ownership and with a new name, new roster of players and return of highly successful previous coach Creon Raftopoulos, expect the Scorchers to set the 2015/16 BBL alight.

Talking to Creon Raftopoulos

We spoke to Creon on his return to Surrey basketball, some of his new signings and what the future holds for the county’s basketball scene…
ON HIS RETURN
17/10/2015 Surrey Scorchers vs London Lions (BBL Cup)
“I’m delighted to be back [In Surrey], it’s where I feel I belong. I’ve enjoyed some good times here and I hope there’s now more to come. “I’m here to put basketball back on the map in the county. It’s been kind of forgotten about over the past few years and, in a county that has many, many sports, we need to raise basketball’s profile again”.

ON HIS WORK-INPROGRESS TEAM
F
ormer Surrey/Guildford Heat Coach Creon Raftopoulos will lead the new Surrey Sports Park franchise in its maiden season. The Zimbabwean led Guildford Heat to three consecutive play-off runs and, in his final season, secured the club’s best ever BBL finish of fourth, took Heat to the play-off semi-final and the Trophy quarter-finals. Creon returns after a two season hiatus, in which time he turned his attentions to community development including a role in the successful Walking Basketball project around the country.
“I’ve bought in players that fit my style and ethic. I need players to know that as well as giving me and the team 100%, they need to be dedicated to the community work that comes with it too. “Yes it’s about getting results and doing the best we can in the BBL, but it’s also about getting the community involved, getting them interested in Basketball again. We need to think about the future and hopefully seeing Surrey Scorchers do well will get more people involved and create a long-term plan for the franchise. “But yeah, I’m happy with the squad I’m building and everyone that comes in ticks all the boxes”.

INTRODUCING THE TEAMS ON THE ARRIVAL OF TAYO OGEDENGBE AND THE DECISION BEHIND HIS CAPTAINCY APPOINTMENT “I’ve worked with Tayo for a number of years now and I’ve seen him develop as a player. When I was at Surrey/Guildford Heat with him I could see he was going to be special. I think with his experience, his leadership and his quality, he’s the obvious choice [for captain]. “He’s been at Glasgow Rocks the past two seasons and has spent some time in France with Calais too, so to have a player of that calibre, with that experience, will be key”.
ON SIGNING LAST SEASON’S SURREY UNITED CAPTAIN, ELVISI DUSHA “I’ve always kept a close eye on it and Elvisi was one of the players that stood out for me. He’s a young player with a big future. Jack Ma jewski (former Surrey United coach) opened the door for him and gave him opportunities, and I’m going to do the same. “I think to now be in a team that has so much experience will help him too. His role will be different to the one he played last season, but it’ll help him and it’ll improve him as a player, I’m sure”.
Surrey Storm First off, congratulations to Surrey Storm’s Tamsin Greenway, Pamela Cookey and Rachel Dunn for winning bronze at the recent Netball World Cup in Australia! The new Storm season begins in January, where they aim to defend their Netball Superleague title. Keep your eyes peeled in this publication and theguide2surrey.com/sport for more.

ON WHAT HE LOOKS FOR IN A PLAYER “It’s not all about ability with me. They have to be good enough, yes, but if they don’t share the same work ethic as me, then they aren’t for Scorchers. A big part of playing for us is also doing community work. “Going to schools, doing coaching classes, speaking to the media. It’s about getting the word out there that Surrey Scorchers are here to stay, they’re here for the long-term. “So if someone isn’t dedicated to that and can’t see my vision, it wouldn’t work”.
ON SURREY SCORCHERS IN FIVE YEARS’ TIME “Most important for me is to see attendances rise at home games. We have fantastic facilities here at Surrey Sports Park and I want to fill our capacity. Of course it would be good to be challenging in the BBL each year, and hopefully we can do that simultaneously, but my main vision is to increase the fan base and get people talking about Surrey basketball again”.

SEPTEMBER 2015
Fulham Foundation Ladies FC
By Tayler Willson The summer of 2015 has been one of vital significance for women’s football. With the success of the World Cup in Canada, followed by record attendances at Women’s Super League and a substantial rise in media coverage, the female’s game has finally taken off.
I
t’s a rise that has been coming. With England’s surprise third-placed finish on the world stage - along with the aforementioned increased coverage and the ever influential social media – it’s taken its chance by the horns and hasn’t disappointed. Despite this sudden increase, the male’s game remains in the clouds in terms of coverage and popularity. But what’s the next step for the women’s game? What needs to be done to take it a level further? Fulham Goalkeeping and Ladies Team Coach, David Newland, invited us down to pre-season training at Motspur Park (the club’s usual training base is Guildford’s Surrey Sports Park) to explore what it’s like from the inside. “As long as the FA continue to add in bits and pieces all the way down
to Sunday league, I can’t see why women’s football can’t continue its growth for years to come,” David told us, “It’s not just about youngsters playing the game, but about young female coaches too. It’s about growing the game as a whole and getting more females involved.
in itself, but for us to get to the semifinal is amazing. I think the media and certainly the social media has made people more aware of the quality that the women’s game possesses.”
“If the media coverage continues, the money in the game will only increase too. But unfortunately, at this time, it’s really about money.” England national team coach, Mark Sampson, guided his side to third place at this summer’s World Cup, a tournament that David thinks is the beginning of great things to come. “The expectation of them wasn’t particularly high when we went into it, if we could get out of the group stage, many said that would be a success

Domestically, the Women’s Super League has recorded a substantial rise in attendances since the tournament’s conclusion, a sudden increase that shocked the Fulham coach. “I was surprised to see how quick the attendances did rise, yes. Most clubs in the WSL (Women’s Super League) were announcing 50%-60% rise in attendances, with some even as high as 80%, just two weeks after the girls returned. That’s just amazing really. “England’s performances touched the nation and I think that’s the way to
do it. They received a well-deserved hero’s welcome. It’s good to know that England do really have a team to be proud of.” Women and Girls Football Operations Officer, Timo Cato, told us that from the club’s perspective, there had been a noticeable difference this pre-season from others. “One thing that’s very obvious is that we’ve had more trialists than we did last year. A lot of parents of younger girls have contacted us and are keen to get their daughter’s involved and have
directly said it’s because of the World Cup. “I think in terms of younger girls having role models too, the World Cup has helped. The girls have always seen the male footballers as a sort of idol, but now they have female idols too, which I think is brilliant.” “As long as this all continues in the same manner, they keep doing the same as they’re doing right now, the only way is up for the women’s game.” Find out more at fulhamfc.com/ladies

“It’s not just friends and family cheering the girls on now, it’s the country, it’s football fans in general – be that male or female football followers – and that’s great for the sport”
“I feel like women’s football has been growing for years, but this World Cup’s just highlighted how far it’s come, really”
“When I say to friends or new people I meet that I play football, they always seem surprised. I hope in years to come it will be more normal for a female to play football”

TEST DUMMY: The definition sums it up, really. I write this less than twenty-four hours after my Insanity workout class concluded. I ache. I ache everywhere. I try to avoid stairs, yet they seem to find me. I try to sit throughout my commute, yet all the seats are taken. I try to walk, yet I am still chased. I try to relax, yet I am still tense. I am broken. As the resident Test Dummy, I’ve been in some weird and challenging situations, but this is by far the toughest yet. Sweat, tears and pain, though, come hand-in-hand with satisfaction and, ultimately, results – such is the class’ recent growth nationwide. After two or three or four swift post-work pints/jugs off Woo Woo and a close encounter with a chilli con carne (that’s a true story for another time), I made my way to Guildford County School for extreme foolishness, irrationality and
madness. Insanity. There were four other newbies that evening, each one in considerably better shape than me. I was introduced to Jenny, our instructor, who gave me a few pre-class tips and wished me luck. As always, I did actually do some research beforehand (during the post-work pints and close encounter with a chilli con carne): Insanity emphasises a method of exercise where one works strenuously for 3-4 minutes, followed by a 30 second rest period, before repeating – this exercise is more commonly known as Max Interval Training. Thanks to this extensive research, I knew what to expect.

Fast-forward an hour and you wouldn’t have known. Sweat falling from every weird, dark, hairy crevice on my wet and tired body. Face numb, hands blue, eyes bloodshot. That was the warm-up. My sweaty knees and hands made the next section tricky. Jumping, squatting, press-ups, sit-ups. You name it, everything everyone hates; we did it and I slid everywhere in the process. I mean, who has sweaty knees? My knees had never sweat before. Not that I know of anyway. I was in unvisited territory. I’ll be honest, as the class drew on I began to slack. Moves I was earlier doing half right, I was now barely doing a quarter right. Jenny assured me this was normal for a first-timer. I think she said that anyway. It’s all a blur.
never done anything like this before. I hadn’t. But there was something about it I loved. Was it the feeling that I’d completed the session? Was it relief? Or was it that, for the first time in a while, I’d given my all (bar the core session) and felt genuinely good at the end of it? Who knows? All I’ll say is: I was Hiroshima and Insanity was the A-Bomb. Insanity Live Classes take place on Monday evenings at 7.45pm and Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm at Guildford County School. We finally moved onto some core work. Finding my core is like getting to the earth’s core, so this was pretty wasted on me. Planks, side planks and all that, not for me, but for everyone else it’s okay. Just not me. Finally we warmed down. This was probably my favourite part of the session. Stretching, swaying, sitting down - this was great. It’s safe to say that Jenny was spot on when she said I’d

BUSINESS News WOKING NAMED TOP FOR COUNCIL-LED TOWN CENTRE REDEVELOPMENT sector collaboration to bring forward much needed town centre regeneration.
Anyone who resides in or is familiar with Woking will know that the town has undergone a huge redevelopment in recent years. Indeed the town centre is unrecognisable from how it looked half a decade ago. Now, the renovation and upgrade of the town has been formally recognised. Woking has been named one of nine top towns in the country for Councilled town centre redevelopment in a report by the British Council of Shopping Centres (BCSC), the membership body for the retail property industry.
The research celebrates Woking and eight other local authorities who have pioneered town centre redevelopment in the face of significant obstacles. The clear conclusion is that councils who produce strong local plans, are prepared to accept some of the risk of development, and work proactively and positively with the private sector, secure greater levels of investment, bringing about sustainable development and civic vitality.
‘Enabling Retail Development – the importance of local authority leadership and positive partnerships’, written by senior industry figures, makes the case for joint public and private
With the overhaul of the town square, the fantastic new Market Walk and the library upgrade (amongst many others), it’s fair to say that Woking is only getting better.

GUILDFORD TOWN CENTRE MASTERPLAN CONSULTATION TO TAKE PLACE THIS MONTH After the consultation back in July that recommended more options for redevelopment at Guildford’s North Street, businesses in the town will take an interest into September’s Town Centre Masterplan Consultation to see what other issues are to be discussed. With collectives such as the Guildford Vision Group (GVG) campaigning with a very clear outlook for how Guildford will evolve over the coming years, it will prove to be an interesting discussion. GVG’s prime objective is to “…take back the centre for residents, workers and visitors alike, against a looming backdrop of 750,000 sq ft of station development and 750,000 sq ft of new retail development in North Street.” Do you agree?
the Sunday Times Best Companies TO WORK FOR LIST Just a little snippet for you - according to a report by LinkedIn, 53% of people would rule out working for a company that has a poor track record when it comes to job security, poor leadership and dysfunctional teams. Meanwhile, more than one in three respondents confirmed they mainly looked for flexible working arrangements from a prospective employer when weighing up their job options. In a nutshell? Job satisfaction is important in 2015. So with that in mind, if you have/you are a lovely employer, then be sure to register your company for the 2016 list at b.co.uk before 2nd October.

ask the experts CRYSTAL CLEAR FINANCIAL SERVICES PROTECTION FOR THE BUSINESS DIRECTOR Director of the Guildford-based company Crystal Clear Financial Services Mike Brown explains how companies such as CCFS are important to business owners and directors…
T
here are a number of ways services such as ours can help key business owners – sole traders, directors and partnerships.
financial assistance to a company and putting in place the right protection to enable that company to continue trading.
The first way is that we can help self-employed people to get mortgages, which there’s been a lot of press about. We are able to help future business owners plan for future mortgage requirements, whether it’s a re-mortgage or a purchase. Moreover, if they’re changing legal entities then to advise and give business owners an idea of what their income needs to show in order to plan ahead.
The final area we can help business owners is with their own personal life insurance – if they are a director of a limited company, we can put their own personal life insurance into the company and offset that against corporation tax. You can save up to 40% off the cost of life insurance if you go via this route.
Secondly, we can protect their business should something happen to them or one of their employees. For directors of a company, they may have a member of staff that’s responsible for sales as an example with links to the biggest contracts, or crucial to the turnover of the business. It’s about providing that financial protection for key persons should something happen to them, and therefore impact the profitability of the business. Also important is protecting the directors themselves. If you have two or three directors of a firm and something happens to them, with either death or serious illness, what happens to their share of the business? Does it go to a family member, or get sold to a competitor? We therefore help in providing that
There are different types of protection – a lot of people will be driven by the legal entity of the business. If you’re a sole trader, your immediate concern is that if you stop working, how do you earn your income? Income protection is crucial for sole traders; if you can’t work you don’t get paid, so that’s fairly straightforward. For partnership and directors of a limited company, it falls into protecting key persons in the business or protecting the business and the value of their contribution to the business. What CCFS does with these companies is to sit down with the directors and basically draw out what’s important and where the risks are should something happen to one of the directors. What is the impact on the business? We aim to come out with some tangible values that you plug those gaps with the necessary protection. It’s

a financial gap analysis. It’s also about thinking about the impact and consequences, so if something happens to director A, the bank could call in the overdraft or loan or a supplier or client might go elsewhere – you can therefore put a value on that and protect it! GENTLEMEN’S AGREEMENTS – ARE THEY WORTH ANYTHING? Nick Richardson of Guildford’s rhw Solicitors explain to us the pitfalls of the verbal agreement…
T
putting together all the various documents. There is also a substantial risk that some points may be missed out altogether.
he Corporate Team at rhw solicitors get asked about the enforceability of Gentlemen’s Agreements more often than any other issue. Does that surprise you? Well, it never fails to surprise us. If you want to do business with a gentleman (or lady), why on earth would you rely on their “word”? Yes, we have all done things for friends and family on the basis of a casual request but usually this tends to be after we have known an individual for many years and the job/favour undertaken does not threaten your financial future if it were to go unrecognised or unpaid.
Another risk here for someone trying to rely on a verbal agreement is in trying to establish to the satisfaction of a Court that the terms of the contract were actually agreed between the parties.
If someone is reticent about entering into a written agreement you really should stand back and ask yourself why? Any emotional pressure exacted through a suggestion that your insistence on a written agreement is an implied slur on the reputation of the other side should be resisted strongly. The question must be “why take a chance?” At its best, a gentlemen’s agreement, realistically this is a verbal agreement, is as enforceable (or unenforceable) as any other verbal contract. Much will depend on trying to establish exactly what the terms of the agreement are and these could be contained in a letter, a series of letters, an e-mail or exchange of e-mails, or even scribbled on a napkin during a meal – the traditional “back of envelope” document. Whilst it may be possible to establish some of the terms of an agreement, it will at best be cumbersome and time consuming
You can see where this is going – the bottom line is that you really should not rely on any form of verbal agreement – get it in writing! To do this, it may not be necessary to go to an “all singing all dancing” contract – simple bullet points of what has been agreed may well be sufficient. We are moving into the area covered by “Heads of Terms” or “Heads of Agreement” - a very useful compromise between having nothing at all or something as ineffective as a gentlemen’s agreement and the comprehensive commercial agreement mentioned above.
Let’s put it another way - if parties enter into binding Heads of Terms, even if there are in reality difficulties with some of the provisions of the Heads of Terms, nevertheless the parties may be substantially better off by having entered into such a document than with nothing at all. As always, it is sensible to take proper legal advice on any such document before signing it. To conclude, if at all possible always get agreements in writing. Nothing else quite cuts it!
For more information contact Nick Richardson of rhw’s Corporate Team: guildford@rhw.co.uk
Whilst Heads of Agreement are more often than not expressed to be non- binding and of no legal effect (save for a couple of points e.g. confidentiality provisions), it is possible to have binding Heads of Terms if the parties are confident that the bullet points are sufficiently detailed to give a concise “minicontract” from the date of signing. The risk is that the Heads of Terms will not do this and the parties will back themselves into a corner and agree to take on obligations which may prove difficult or impossible to enforce.
