Your Community News PARTNERSHIP AGREED TO SECURE FUTURE FOR BURPHAM COURT FARM

A

bright future for Burpham Court Farm is on the horizon, thanks to a new partnership between Guildford Borough Council and Surrey Wildlife Trust. The partners have agreed to develop a new vision to secure the site as a nature reserve for local residents to enjoy. Burpham Court Farm is an important area of green space within the Wey Valley Landscape, with both woodland and wetland habitats. The 32 hectare farm was acquired by the Council in 1990 and was leased and used as a conservation centre until 2009. Surrey Wildlife Trust currently uses the farm for livestock grazing under a temporary licence with the council. Cllr Paul Spooner, Leader of Guildford Borough Council says: “Burpham Court Farm is an important landscape which provides a wetland habitat for many plants and animals. We believe there is the potential to transform the site into an

excellent nature reserve which can be enjoyed by the whole community, and we will be working closely with Surrey Wildlife Trust to achieve this.” Nigel Davenport, Chief Executive of Surrey Wildlife Trust adds: “The Wey river is one of Surrey’s most important habitats for wildlife and we are delighted to be working with

Guildford Borough Council to protect this vital stretch.” “We will be setting up a project board to develop the vision for the future of the site with Surrey Wildlife Trust soon,” adds Cllr Richard Billington, Lead Councillor for Rural Economy, Countryside, Parks and Leisure.

STARS IN THEIR EYES The University of Surrey’s state-of-the-art telescope and dome will be boosted by the construction of an amphitheatre under the stars, funded by generous donors to the Annual Fund. Last year the Astrophysics Group launched very popular stargazing nights where members of the public were able to view the night sky via the University’s £100,000 telescope and dome.

Professor Justin Read said: “The telescope is an exciting new addition to our facilities at the University. Our first two public events were very popular - we had all ages from 7 to 70 to see the night sky and hear a lecture about the latest astrophysics research at Surrey. It also gives students the opportunity to work with real data, learning a host of skills that will stand them in good stead wherever their future takes them.

These outreach events have been boosted by a £10,000 grant from the Annual Fund which will be used to build an outdoor amphitheatre and large display screen to capture some of 100 thousand million stars in the Milky Way!

“The Annual Fund grant will enable us to create an exciting new multipurpose space on campus that will inspire students, schoolchildren and the general public for years to come.” For more information visit surrey.ac.uk

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT

F

airtrade Fortnight returns at the end of February for a celebration of all that is fair in global trade. Whether it’s bananas, chocolate, gold or platinum; everybody deserves fair working and pay conditions - it’s about recognising the work and energy that goes into producing products many of us take for granted. And Following several years of campaigning, the end of 2015 brought with it the recognition that Surrey has long sought after – the award of a Faitrade County status.

Speaking for Surrey Fairtrade, Becca Rowland, said that campaigners are delighted to have reached this milestone. “Many people have worked hard to make this happen. There is growing evidence that sales of Fairtrade products make a positive impact for farmers and workers in poorer countries. Just as farmers here need to be treated fairly, so do the farmers who produce much of our food overseas and one day, I hope, Fairtrade will be the norm, not the exception”. Faith Axten, who is involved Fairtrade Surrey and the coordinator of the Addlestone Fairtrade Town group, is encouraging as many people to get involved with Fairtrade Fortnight in 2016 as possible. “We’ll be having a celebration event for achieving Fairtrade County status next Fairtrade Fortnight. We’ll also be encouraging everyone to sit down for breakfast and stand up for farmers! Fairtrade Fortnight (29 February – 13 March 2016) will be all about breakfasts. Before

you’ve finished eating breakfast in the morning you’ve depended on more than half the world if you’re drinking coffee form Kenya, bananas from Colombia, cocoa from the Ivory Coast, tea from India, sugar from Malawi and juice from Brazilian oranges. We’d love as many people as possible across Surrey to organise breakfast with their friends, their school, their community group or their work colleagues and try and make it a Fairtrade breakfast”. The Guide 2 Surrey will be bringing you your breakfast suggestions and where to source Fairtrade produce in the coming weeks via theguide2surrey.com. For more information on Fairtrade Fortnight in Surrey and how to get involved as a company, school or individual, visit surreyfairtrade.org.uk.

SPONGE INVENTED TO SAVE OUR OCEANS dispersing the remnant with dispersants, which are often toxic.

R

esearchers from Surrey and the Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel) in Brazil have invented a magnetic carbon-based sponge that could revolutionise the way oil spills are recovered. The research, published recently in ‘Nanoscale’, points to a simple, low-cost remedy for dealing with environmental spillages – such as the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010 – which devastate the environment and have a huge impact on public health and the local economy. Environmental oil spills are currently dealt with by physically skimming the pollutant off the surface of the water, and then

The new magnetic graphene sponge, which was developed in Surrey’s ATI (Advanced Technology Institute), tackles the problem in a different way. The sponge has tiny iron nanoparticles (minute particles) anchored inside, and uses a mechanism similar to a carbon water filter to absorb the pollutants while allowing water to pass through unhindered. Pellet-sized, the sponge’s structure means that it can contain a large volume of pollutant materials relative to its weight. These pollutants are synthesised using graphene oxide; a cheap and easy way to produce material with exceptional properties. The presence of magnetic nanoparticles in the sponge framework allows the pollutant-laden sponge to simply be picked up using an everyday magnet, after which it can be reused. Professor Ravi Silva, Director of the ATI and co-author of the research paper, said, “The potential applications of

our magnetic graphene sponges are significant. They range from important environmental remediation strategies to fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. I am happy to see this work, developed through the close ties between our respective research groups, come out of the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) funded Surrey Graphene Centre, where interactions of a collaborative and industrial nature are key to our success.” Dr Neftali Carreño, primary researcher from UFPel commented, “It can be envisioned that three dimensional nanocarbon materials produced using similar fabrication methods can be incorporated with other suitable particles or active molecules for a variety of applications. These could include integrated biological or chemical sensors, as a matrix host for drug delivery systems, as catalyst supports, or even as a component in solar cells.” For more information visit surrey.ac.uk

Your Community News ACM GIVE BACK TO SCHOOLS

T

he ACM have gone the extra mile by awarding musical equipment to The Ashcombe School in Dorking, after talented student Jamie Mitchell gained a place at the prestigious music academy.

Surrey the first to benefit from ACM’s programme of investment. ACM provided music equipment to the school to allow more young people to enjoy and connect with music in the future.

This year, The Academy of Contemporary Music, responsible for producing creative talent such as Ed Sheeran and Newton Faulkner, is giving back to the schools that were instrumental in raising its latest crop of talented students.

Harriet Sampson, Head of Music, Acting Head of Drama & Extracurricular Coordinator at The Ashcombe School commented “We found the investment very helpful as it has enabled us to get new equipment including a much needed Powered Mixer and guitar / bass combo amps. The mixer has since been used for our school productions, in assemblies and the amps are used frequently by bands in rehearsals and performances. We chose equipment that would be used by sixth

Following in the footsteps of Ed and Newton, talented local lad Jamie Mitchell (18) was accepted onto the Guitar Degree course at ACM in September, making his school, The Ashcombe School in Dorking,

t’s that time of year again where the nation’s population become staunchly passionate about what to put in their pancakes come Shrove Tuesday. Do you do the classic Lemon and Sugar; revelling in the sweet citron or do you go all out on your daily calorie intake and include marshmallows, peanut butter, chocolate-spread, salted caramel and ice-cream? Before you get started on what you’re going to put in your pancakes and settle down for an evening of delicious treats, it’s best to work up an appetite yes? A bit of exercise perhaps? What better way to start the day than by raising money and competing in the annual pancake race on Guildford’s High Street organised by the Charlotteville Jubilee Trust.

form bands and guitarists. As Jamie would have used this equipment, it was nice for him to have this legacy.” Jamie added, “I’m really glad that they were able to buy the new equipment, of which is focused on sixth form students who play guitar or are in a band. I hope it helps a great amount to whoever will use it! ACM has been fantastic so far. It has been challenging in some parts and easy in others, which I think is great as it caters to all skill levels there. You meet a whole variety of people who have their own talents and styles, and are all more than willing to get involved in what they do. It has been a rewarding and fun experience thus far, and I hope it continues to be so.”

Talking to Lulu By Alexander D’Arcy

ENTERTAINMENT

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment

T

he sumptuous rock ‘n’ soul singer of the sixties hit ‘Shout’, a lady of legendary status who requires little, if any introduction. She has experienced near to her whole lifetime in the music industry and is still serenading audiences the world over with her latest album ‘Making Life Rhyme’. This is Lulu.

You’ve recently released your latest album, you’re about to embark on a nationwide tour, have been in the industry for over 50 years and you still look amazing - how do you do it – what’s the secret? I think a lot of it has to do with how I look after myself. I’ve been around and worked with the best people, the best stylists, the best hairdressers, the best makeup artists - I want to sing till the day I drop and whether you want to or not you have to be interested in taking care of how you look because it’s all part and parcel of it, especially as you get to be as ancient as me. I did the album last year which was the first self-penned album, albeit I didn’t do verse, me, myself and I - it was myself, my brother and then we called in a few really talented people to write on a couple of things with them. My band wanted me to do a blues album and I was like, ‘oh there’s many better blues singers than me’ but they talked me into starting it. I started it because a couple of songs that me and my brother had written. The record company Decca said we like the new stuff better and then I got the best reviews of my whole life – so tell me what that’s all about? It’s great thing right now to have been around as long as I have and to still have a career. I can still do what I love to do and what I really believe I was born to do. And then to have the best reviews and then to do the tour last year… you know it went so well that the promoters said we should do another one this year. It’s starting earlier and is longer than was originally planned because of the demand. It’s great, it’s all good.

The album has had great reviews and you just said that this was the first album that you have penned yourself, do you wish that you had started earlier? Of course, of course. I don’t waste time wishing I should have done this or that. If anybody said to me is there anything you would change in your life

then I think that’s the one thing, I would have started writing earlier. But you never know I may have been absolutely hopeless. But I’m sure if you start young you could only get better. And also if you’re really successful like I have been, I would have then worked with really great people. But there’s no point in moaning about what you didn’t do, just be happy about what you did do. That’s really how I’m living my life right now. I’ve been up, I’ve been down, I’ve been from side to side, post to post and I’m still here. I think I’ve changed without losing myself, it’s almost like finding myself in a weird way. Because I was so young, 15 is very young to be successful – I look at Justin Bieber and all things people say about him, like he’s a bad boy etc. and I look at Britney Spears and how very hard it is to be successful. I know it and I know how lonely it is. I had a really turbulent, violent childhood and I would never talk about it because I was ashamed of it and I thought I was going to be judged as not been good enough. What that led me to do was to be the caretaker of the family, the people pleaser and thinking ‘I’ve got to get things right, if I’m not perfect everything is going to fall apart’, so I became successful at 15, the bread winner at 15, putting people on the payroll and then I’m overly responsible for EVERYBODY and it’s tremendous pressure. I’ve done lots of work to try understand why I am. I think that childhood gave me a lot of drive but now I can talk about things that I was told were secret, that you shouldn’t wash your dirty linen in public, which I still believe because it’s so heavily engrained, but writing now, I’m much more open.

You’ve said that this album sums up what you see as your place in the world – and lyrically it feels like a particularly honest album – to summarise in your own words – how do you see yourself and your position in the industry? Well I think I’m one of the survivors, I don’t know. I’ll never be old, it’s just not

in my internal makeup. They do say that if it’s a person a success at a very young age they stay that age, emotionally I think. It led me to do and deal with things in my life that were immature. I had two marriages; you can’t say it was anyone persons fault, I would say I’m a good picker, they were good guys but we were all immature. But that’s what happens when you come into this industry at a young age -- you think you’re invincible and that the world’s at your feet and that you know it all an yet you’re still frightened and still childish but you’re trying to pretend that you’ve got it all sorted. It’s fascinating journey. I’ve been there, done it, got the t-shirt and I’m still here to tell the story. Even the fact that David (Bowie) died. I think, many years ago if he had died, and I know when john Lennon died it really upset me but I don’t think I allowed myself to feel how I really feel about it, knowing him, knowing his wife and then knowing his son, but when Bowie died I was completely gutted at the end of the day and every night my dreams have not been smooth and I believe that it has an effect on you. All the things that have happened to me on my path when I was young I would stuff them down and say ‘I’m fine, I’m fine’ when you’re not really fine because everything impacts you so it’s great to be aware of those feelings at this point.

You come to Guildford in March – what can the crowd expect? The most important thing when I go to a concert and what I want to hear myself say at the end is, ‘oh that was a great night’. It’s not about going out and signing all the songs from the latest album. I want them all, the old and the new and at the end I want everyone dancing, everyone on their feet.

Lulu performs at G Live in Guildford on the 4th March. For more information and to book tickets visit glive.co.uk

The Watts’ built their home, Limnerslease, in the Surrey Hills amongst the breath-taking scenery of the Pilgrims’ Way. The newly opened Watts Studios restores that sense of wonderment found at Limnerslease, bringing back G F and Mary Watts’s

TALKING TO RAY MEARS Ray Mears; man of the wild and the foremost authority on Bushcraft in the UK shall embark on his very own adventure this March; a national theatre tour to recount the tales told by remarkable human beings who, when faced with adversity have survived against all the odds.

Is there any one particular tale that inspires you the most about the capabilities of man? No, they’re all different. Some we can learn from their mistakes and some we can learn from the individual’s courage and determination – it depends. I think what’s interesting is that we live in an age where we are being told that the wilderness is threatening and that you’ll die in minutes if you don’t do this, that or the other. And that you have to be unshaven, got to have a knife in your teeth, six foot wide and to be specialforces to survive. None of that’s true. The truth of the matter is it’s about individual determination, courage and perseverance. That’s what these tales are about, they show us that actually the most ordinary people have done the most extraordinary things. They’re stories that provide deep thought and that stay with you. What’s interesting is sometimes why; what motivates them to survive. I think when people survive in these sort of cases they’ve chosen to, they’ve made a conscious decision, ‘I am going to get back’. But there’s normally a reason and that varies so widely it’s astonishing. One of the stories I’m going to tell is of a man who was 196 days in the Australian outback, one of an aircrew of five, the others all perished and he survived. He didn’t even have a fire. Isn’t that amazing? Can you imagine? He had a particular motivation that brought him back that will seem incredibly mundane but in those circumstances, at that period in his life that’s what it took to come home.

You grew up in Surrey, spending time in the North Downs countryside. Is there a particular nature spot in the area that you love or could conceivably be called your first love? Yes very much so. I grew up in Kenley but I would come through Guildford all the time. I started teaching Bush Craft in Selbourne so I used to like to travel across the Downs, down through Guildford and across the Hogs Back and to travel cross country – that’s how I like to travel. You are often travelling the world, exploring in your own right – where is home for you and do you ever employ your skill sets within a home environment (even though it’s bush craft)? Bush craft becomes a part of your life so you can’t not. I live in Sussex and I love the South of England. On our doorsteps I think we do have some of the most beautiful countryside on the planet without a doubt, very often underestimated and as I said the skill set just becomes a part of who you are. Since you first appeared on television screens, it seems more than ever that there are plethora of bush craft and adventure programmes. What do you think the catalyst has been for such a rise in the popularity of these programmes? I don’t know. A lot of cloning and copying goes on in television. I think

vicariously do it through the television, that’s fine, it makes them think more deeply about the wild places and the environments that we share with other creatures and I think that’s important. But at the same time there are people that watch the programmes that have been inspired to go off and have their own adventures and that’s fantastic. If you can just move one person to go out and have an adventure then you’ve succeeded. It’s really important to me. Do you have any tips for young adventurers looking to explore the wilds of Surrey? Surrey is fantastic and the most beautiful county. I’ve often thought when I’m in rainforests that this is just big and hot Surrey. The woodland in Surrey - especially on the steep hillsides is just like jungle so it’s a great place to cut your teeth for the rainforest. My advice to youngsters is to start with the basics and enjoy them. Learn to navigate, learn first aid and then go outdoors and learn the other skills and progress. Start with the small journeys in local parks, then go up to the North Downs and so on. Then you explore the Hurtwood where there no footpath markers, then you move onto bigger things as you grow. Don’t rush the journey, don’t jump on the escalator enjoy taking the stairs.

it’s good though and I think it’s good that people aspire to have adventures outside. There are obviously viewers who only

EASY CRÊPE RECIPE

Classic crêpes that can be adapted for both sweet and savoury toppings.

Makes 8

• 100g plain flour

• 80g butter

• 2 large eggs

• Lemon wedges, to serve (optional)

• 300ml milk • Pinch of salt

• Granulated sugar, to serve (optional)

1. Pour the flour, eggs, milk and a pinch of salt into a bowl and whisk to a smooth batter. Set aside for 30 mins to rest. 2. Set a medium frying pan or crêpe pan over a medium heat and throw in a knob of butter. When hot, pour a ladleful of batter into the pan and tilt the pan to cover the surface. Cook for 1 min on each side until golden. If you’re feeling brave, toss them in the pan or use a fish slice to turn them. 3. Set aside on a warm plate or in a low oven as you go. Wipe the pan with kitchen paper in between pancakes. 4. Serve with lemon wedges and sugar or your favourite filling. We recommend sliced bananas and whipped cream or chocolate spread and chopped hazelnuts.

AMERICAN STYLE BLUEBERRY PANCAKES WITH YOGHURT & MAPLE SYRUP

For an American twist, try these super simple fluffy pancakes.

Makes 12

• 200g blueberries

• 1 teaspoon of caster sugar

• 1 free-range egg

• 40g butter

• 240g of self-raising flour • Plain yoghurt • Maple syrup • 240ml of milk • ½ teaspoon of salt 1. Put the egg, self-raising flour, milk, salt and sugar into a large bowl and whisk until you get a smooth batter. Gently crush half of the blueberries so that they release a little juice and some of their colour and gently stir them into the batter. Rest for 30 minutes. 2. Put a large frying pan on a medium heat and add half the butter. When the pan is hot and the butter has melted, ladle a portion of the batter into the pan. One ladle will make one portion so cook several at a time if you can. 3. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes turning them over when they start to brown on the bottom. When cooked on both sides, transfer them to a plate, wipe the pan clean with kitchen paper, add the rest of the butter and start again. Repeat until all the batter is used up. 4. To serve, drizzle the pancakes with yoghurt and maple syrup and scatter over the rest of the blueberries.

An artistic space was therefore the natural choice of host for the next series of ‘Food by Aneke’ Pop Ups and The Lightbox gallery and museum is pleased to announce that the first of these will be taking place at 7.30pm on Saturday 13 February with more dates to follow. The evening will get off to a bang with bubbles accompanied by canapes against the stunning backdrop of the exhibition ‘John Constable: Observing the Weather’. This will be followed by a 6 course tasting menu that will both surprise and delight the guests. Previous Pop Up menus have included treats such as ‘Bembridge crab Scotch egg’, ‘Slow roasted free range pork belly served on a pink lady apple risotto’ and ‘Rhubarb panna cotta with ginger ice cream cones and space dusted cherry soup’. My mum’s marmalade is better than yours! So goes the oh so familiar topic of conversation in the office. Join in the marmalade making frenzy, whilst the Seville oranges are in season and enter a jar of your marmalade in Fanny’s Marmalade Competition this year. It is called Fanny’s marmalade competition as Fanny’s Farm shop use to hold the event. Sadly Fanny died last year. There was such a strong following for the marmalade competition that the fine folk over at Kingfishers Farm Shop in Abinger Hammer thought it would be sad to let it go, thus embarking on designs for the traditional competition to be held at kingfishers by kind permission of Fanny’s daughter. In previous years there have been 100 entries.

TABLE FOR TWO Oh Valentine’s Day – the day that causes unnecessary strife for both singletons and couples alike. But if you are in the latter camp, there’s a jolly good chance you’ll want to go for a delicious meal. And while we are lucky to reside in an area filled with incredible eateries, we thought we’d share with you a few ideas of where to go this 14th February. Enjoy…

La Meridiana - East Horsley

Ah mi amore – Italian cuisine is always a great choice for a romantic night out. La Meridiana is a little slice of Italy in the heart of East Horsley, where the sights, sounds and food will transport you to a place in the sun. This restaurant looks the part, and by Jove you’ll be equally impressed with the quality cuisine. Bella!

Find out more at lameridianarestaurant.co.uk or call 01483 284343

Lickfold Inn - Near Petworth

Chefs Tom Sellers and Graham Squire offer you their modern take on an independent British pub. Don’t be concerned by the word ‘pub’ – this is truly high quality cuisine you can expect here, all in the beautiful surrounds of the South Downs near Haslemere. With its Tudor features and exposed beams, The Lickfold is the perfect place to get cosy and savour and enjoy Tom and Graham’s fresh and original cuisine, sourced locally wherever possible.

Find out more at thelickfoldinn.co.uk or call 01789 532 535

The Swan Inn

Chiddingfold

The Swan is AA four star inn with a two rosette restaurant, and boasts 11 wonderful en-suite air-conditioned bedrooms. So you can really get romanticals should the mood strike… Don’t be fooled by the relaxed, informal atmosphere – The Swan Inn take good food seriously! Head Chef Aarron Foster builds his menus around the very best local produce. As such, they change weekly, depending on seasonal availability; expect something a bit special for Valentine’s Day…

Olivo - Guildford

As regular attendees of this fabulous restaurant, we cannot recommend Olivo highly enough for Valentine’s Day. Located on just off of Guildford’s High Street, Olivo offers traditional Italian cuisine, prepared by Italian chefs and using only the freshest ingredients. Opened all the way back in 1997, Olivo have since established themselves as one of the finest restaurants of their type in Guildford, with a superb service style and amazing menu. You and your other (or perhaps better?) half will be mightily impressed…

Find out more at olivo.co.uk or call 01483 303535

Carlo’s Trattoria - Guildford

After 20 years as one of the best loved Italian restaurants in Guildford, Carlo’s has seen many changes but one thing always remains - a genuine passion and pride for Italian cuisine. The new modern design of the restaurant means the arches provide perfect partitions allowing you to feel you have your own private area whilst retaining the atmosphere and ambience of the rest of the restaurant. Moreover, as Carlo’s is located in Newland’s Corner, the surrounding area is stunning countryside too. In short – a perfect place for Valentine’s Day…

Find out more at carlostrattoria.com or call 01483 224180

Britten’s - Guildford One of Guildford’s few truly independent restaurants, Britten’s has been a revelation since opening on Sydenham Road back in 2013. Britten’s interior has a cheery, confident interior, with little trendy traces of ‘upcycling’ to works by local artists. If you want a dining experience that’s both cool and quirky, this is the Valentine’s Destination for you. And the food? Well, that is rather important. Britten’s serves creative, contemporary British food using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and produce. The restaurant offers the diner modern British cuisine at its very best – great cooking with a seasonal flavour. We can only say, be sure to check out the menu and get excited…

Cellar Magneval

Fleet and Woking

If wine and cheese are a marriage made in heaven – and they are, dear reader then Cellar Magneval must surely be the pearly gates. Wine? Cheese? It could scarcely be more perfect... The first was opened in Woking in November 2013 by Thierry and Jo de Magneval, and was such a success that the Fleet branch soon followed. This is not a restaurant per se but a wine bar; lingering over a glass of red with an aperitif? Why, that’s about as romantic as it gets… Cellar Magneval also boast a wine boutique and deli in Ripley too, should you fancy buying some of their produce and having a Valentine’s Night in!

Fig and Rose Frangipane Tart

46 FEBRUARY 2016

375 g Plain flour 75 g Icing sugar 190 g Cold butter (Cubed) 1 count Large free range egg (Beaten) 1 dash Milk

SWEET SHORTCRUST PASTRY

Ingredients

PREP COOK YIELDS 45 mins 50 mins 1 family size tart

11. Pass through a sieve and leave to cool then fill pastry case

10. Add sugar and figs to a heavy based saucepan and bring to a boil and then reduce for 10 minutes until a syrup has formed

Then…

9. Remove beads and bake for another 5 to 10 minutes until golden brown and leave to cool

8. Add baking beads if you have them or rice works just as well and bake for 20 minutes

7. Take some scrunched up grease-proof paper and line filled tart tin. It wants to come up past the pastry

6. After it has cooled, roll pastry out to roughly half a cm, cut out, and line grease a deep tart tin.

5. Preheat your oven at 180/170 fan assisted and crack on with the curd

4. Wrap in cling film and leave in the fridge for half an hour

3. Add a dash of milk if not coming together until you have a ball of dough

2. Add the beaten egg and combine quickly. Not too messy as mix is pretty dry

1. Sieve flour and icing sugar into a large mixing bowl if you fancy being thorough. Work butter into dry mix like trying to click your fingers but failing miserably until mix resembles breadcrumbs

PASTRY

5. Leave to cool and then decorate before casting decorations aside to destroy!

4. Bake in the oven for 50 minutes.

2. Gradually add eggs, then almonds, extract, rose water and orange blossom 3. Using your fingers pinch small amounts of the mixture and cover pastry case leaving no gaps for the jam to escape

1. Cream butter and sugar

FRANGIPANE TOPPING

Fig and Rose Frangipane Tart

It was incredible.

If you were in a pinch you could seriously reduce the prep time by picking up some ready rolled sweet shortcrust pastry or, for you purists, you can find my sweet crust recipe below. You could also buy the jam but it’s too easy not to give it go. (I had 300g of figs left over so I flambéed them in honey bourbon and then macerated in an equal weight of sugar for 10 minutes.

A perfect combination of middle eastern sweet flavours in a smooth almond frangipane. Underpinned by sweet fig jam on a buttery base.

Kingfishers, Abinger Hammer

K

ingfisher’s Farm Shop have been in existence since 1854 – so it’s fair to say that they form an important part of the local history. This farm shop on the edge of the lovely village of Abinger Hammer is a treasure trove of amazingly fresh and local fruit and vegetables. Kingfisher’s has become an increasingly important part of the business since the family started selling fruit and vegetables in 1971 and the shed at Abinger Hammer became the present shop in 1999. The shop provides high quality food for the discerning customer, sourcing as much regional and local food as available. Shelves groan with all kinds of pies, cakes, jam and chutneys

What they produce: Watercress, acknowledged as a superfood

and great local meats and breads are brought in daily making this the quintessential farm shop for food lovers. However their famous crop is what’s been here for well over a centuryand-a-half - Watercress. You may well remember growing it in yoghurt pots at school, but this fine green crop is truly amazing stuff; a vitamin rich super-food being fed by the purest water from a natural spring. With this bounty, the farm shop sells all manner of watercress enhanced foods from pies and quiches to breads and sausages. Watercress contains more vitamin C than oranges, more calcium than from milk, more iron than spinach and more folate than bananas. It is brimming with more than 15 essential vitamins and minerals. Gram for gram, watercress contains four times more beta-carotene and vitamin A equivalents than apples, tomatoes and broccoli, more vitamin E than

broccoli. In short – it is incredibly good for you. The vital ingredient for growing watercress is of course, water – pure, mineral rich spring water, from which this peppery super-food derives its collection of nutrients. These conditions provide all of said nutrients without the aid of fertilisers or insecticides, so there is no need to worry about what’s in your incredibly healthy green garnish. So watercress is another crop that can be found in abundance in your fair county. The cress is hand cut by staff Kingfisher and is shipped to events and fairs across Surrey, and even to New Covent Garden Market in Nine Elms, South London. Find out more about this amazing producer with an illustrious history – and indeed how to make yourself a watercress-based snack – by visiting kingfisherfarmshop.com or calling 01306 730703

NORBURY BLUE , DORKING

What they produce: Surrey’s only cheeses – and ruddy good ones too…

Y

ou might not think of the serenity of the Surrey Hills would be the place to create that most moreish of eatables – cheese. However, you’d be very wrong indeed reader, for in these acres of lush greenness lies the brilliant Norbury Blue.

As Surrey’s only cheesemaker, this Dorking-based fromage-former deserves an awful lot of kudos. Located at the foot of Box Hill near Dorking, Neil and Michaela Allam started Norbury Blue in 2001 and have grown in popularity every year since. Their eponymous cheese has gained a huge reputation amongst dairy-lovers; a blue veined cheese with an intense flavour that proves Britain is not confined to the standard (albeit delicious) West Country Cheddar, Red Leicester and Wensleydale.

Where to Buy At Home, Cobham The Jolly Farmers, Buckland, Reigate Butchers Hall, Forest Green Bertram Bees, Westcott The Cheese & Wine Co. Hampton Village F. Connisbee, East Horsley Fannys Farm Shop, Merstham Chittys, Brockham Kingfisher Farm Shop, Abinger Hammer Naked Grocer, Walton on Thames Priory Farm, South Nutfield Roses Stores, Mickleham

This flavour is derived from Norbury Blue’s herd of Friesian cows, whom have a rich and diverse diet, and the fact that all the flavours are not cooked out with the commonly used pasteurisation process. The milk is moved from the parlour to the cheese making dairy, a mere thirty meters up the farm yard, where it is then pumped into a 900 litre vat and heated. The moulds are then loaded by hand, salted-washed and transferred into the maturing room where they stay for around four weeks. Et voila – delicious Surrey cheese. As well as the Norbury Blue, there is also Dirty Vicar, a Caerphilly-like cheese with a soft, creamy rind, though in the future you can expect one or two new additions to the fold. In the meantime though, be sure to check out where you can sample Surrey’s only cheese, and follow it up with a knowing nod…

h Surrey Hills – you are the gift that just keeps on giving aren’t you? Not content with producing some truly delicious foodstuffs, they can also boast some beverages of the alcoholic variety too. You may be familiar with the wines – particularly sparkling and rosé – courtesy of the likes of Denbies and Albury Organic Vineyard. However, it is a different tipple that we’re shouting about here; the latter vineyards neighbour, Silent Pool Distillers. Located on the Duke of Northumberland’s Albury Estate, the distillery takes its name from the mythical, spring-fed pool from which it draws its water. The Silent Pool Distillers make it their mission to create high quality, small batch, artisanal spirits of the very highest quality, using only the finest local ingredients. Right up The Guide 2 Surrey’s street, to be honest. Drawn by a common passion for the precision and innovation of craft distilling, whilst using water from the very Silent Pool they take their name from, Cory Mason and his team are creating some very exciting spirits.

Silent Pool Distillers, GUILDFORD What they produce: A variety of gins – and as of January, a vodka too…

Having transformed a collection of dilapidated farm buildings situated on the Albury Estate into a state-ofthe-art distilling station, the small band of merry men have set to work on creating some amazing drinks for your pleasure. Through botanical brilliance and their reluctance to settle for the ‘simple process’, the team have sourced the very best copper distillers and equipment, whilst also using traditional methods to produce a selection of full-bodied bottled fun juices. The first distilling took place in October 2014, with two gins initially launched – the Silent Pool Gin and Albury Limited Release. Now, you can add strawberry, blackberry, apricot and plum flavours, plus these two brand new additions…

Distillers with a hint of Rye, delicious, smooth enough to slip on the rocks or enjoy with tonic – and at 40% abv, it’s a wee bit stronger than your white label, and infinitely better tasting… And then there’s the Admiral Collingwood Navy Strength Gin. The Silent Pool distiller is related to Admiral Collingwood, the man who took over from Nelson when he fell at the battle of Trafalgar and ensured from his ship the Royal Sovereign that England prevailed – so they thought it would be nice to revive an old family recipe. This is a big juniper gin, with a punch to match; at 57% abv you’d better make sure you have your sea legs on… Find out more by visiting silentpooldistillers.com or by calling 01483 229136

K.C. Ross-Miller on Settling in to Surrey Life Scorchers to Feature on BBL Live Broadcast NAME: K.C. Ross-Miller BORN: Tulsa, Oklahoma, United States D.O.B: January 4, 1991 HEIGHT: 1.85 metres POSITION: Point Guard (#10)

“Growing up in Dallas, Texas, it’s either [American] Football or basketball,” K.C. Ross-Miller, Surrey Scorchers’ American Point Guard tells me when I asked him how he got into the sport. “In the US you tend to have to choose between one of those sports. My dad ended up teaching me how to play basketball, mostly because my mum was scared I’d get hurt playing [American] football.

“I got the offer to move pretty early in the summer, but it took a while for me to make to decide. I really just wanted to make sure it was the right move for me on both a personal level and for my career. I had a chat with a few of the boys here who told me how much I’d like it and I went for it.

“Dad played basketball, football and baseball when he was younger, and I kind of just went with what he and my mum suggested. I picked it up pretty fast and it just went from there.” The 25-year-old arrived at Surrey Sports Park after spending last season with Auburn Tigers at Auburn University. He built himself a good reputation with supporters with some dominant and impressive displays. The American, however, admitted that no matter how tempting the move to England was when it first came in, he had to take his time when making the decision.

One thing the American did single-out as being a problem, if only temporary, was the change from American to British food. But after some extensive research plus recommendations from his team mates, he soon overcame it: “It took me a few weeks to get used to what to eat, it’s kind of different over here. I’ve went to a few restaurants, but it’s really all about Nando’s. I’ve learnt that much.”

“I didn’t want to move just anywhere overseas, I had interest from other teams in other countries, but the chance to move to England was something that really appealed to me. Everyone’s really well-spoken in Guildford too, it’s a nice, soft accent.”

“It’s almost like being a freshman in American college now I’m here, it’s like I’ve started over,” K.C. continued, “there are some things I’m finding a little more challenging so far, but the style of play

is what I enjoy. The tempo over here compared to the states is a little slower I guess, but I like playing both ways and I’m enjoying it. “There are a few things I’ve had to adjust in my style since I’ve come here, but it’s nothing that hasn’t bettered me as a player.” With the BBL heading into the final stretch of the season, Scorchers find themselves toying with play-offs, but lacking consistency. Ross-Miller’s been one of the more consistent performers on the roster, but admitted he still has a few things he’d like to work on come the close season. “I want to put up good numbers offensively, and I want to be efficient and consistent in my game. Plus, if we lose a couple of games I want to be able to show my leadership skills and develop that side it. “I came prepared and I trained hard. Before I came over I watched a lot of films of the BBL and how it’s played. Some small things have been challenging, but overall I think I’ve settled in well and I’m just enjoying my game so far. I want to make the play-offs. I don’t like losing.”

SURREY Storm NEWS: With this year’s Super League underway, Surrey Storm are aiming to become the first team to win back-to-back titles in the league’s history. Storm, however, have said goodbye to two influential players in Tamsin Greenway and South African international, Bongi Msomi. But despite the loss, Storm’s Georgia Lees insists they remain confident that they’ve what it takes to go all the way. “We’ve had Tamsin [Greenway] retire, we lost Bongi [Msomi], so I think at the moment we’re the underdogs, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing,” said the England International, “I think it’s a good place for us to be. As long as we know we can go out there and do it I think that’s all that really matters at this stage.” With the Super League becoming so popular – with much thanks to

Sky Sports – Lees is hopeful that the sport will be reinstated as an Olympic sport by 2018, after missing out in 2012 and this year’s Rio games. “I think it’d be great for it to be reinstated, that would be the icing on the cake. It’s where sport is most recognised and having that backing would be really great for it, it would certainly give young players something to aspire to.” Storm host Yorkshire Jets (13th February) and Celtic Dragons (20th February) this month, with tickets still available. TALKING TO : MARLAND

Our Sports Writer Tayler Willson spoke to Harlequins Wing Marland Yarde on Caribbean beaches, the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup squad and finally, again, swapping Surrey Sports Park for Bagshot’s Pennyhill Park ahead of this year’s Six Nations– “The way the country idolised Jonny Wilkinson for that kick in 2003, that’s what sport’s about,” Marland Yarde tells me when I ask him what first drew him into the world of Rugby. “That’s how it all began for me, not specifically the game of rugby itself, but the way a sport can unite a nation, the way it can change an entire nation’s attitude towards something.” Growing up in St Lucia, Yarde had no intention of becoming a professional sportsman. He simply enjoyed playing football on the Caribbean beaches with his friends. At the age of nine he and his parents moved to England where he became heavily involved at sports at school. This is where it began. “A few years after I had moved to England I was offered a place at Queens Park Rangers

Football Club, from there I had my heart set on being a footballer. On the side I’d been playing rugby too and I kind of developed a love for that. I was confused to be honest as it turned out I was pretty good at that too.” “There came a time, though, when I had to choose whether it was going to be rugby or football. I ended up being offered a scholarship and played for England under-16s in rugby – that made my mind up for me, really.” Having worked his way through the England set-up, Stuart Lancaster handed Yarde his first full England cap against Argentina in the summer of 2013 where he was named in the starting XV, scoring two tries in a 51-26 victory. The following summer – after an impressive

domestic campaign for London Irish – he was selected for England’s tour of New Zealand, starting all three tests and scoring two tries. Following a move to Harlequins at the end of the 2013-14 season, Yarde experienced a self-confessed “frustrating year” where a string of injuries saw him miss a large part of the domestic season, thus surrendering his place in the national set-up. Despite making Lancaster’s initial World Cup long list at the end of last year, he eventually missed the final cut. “There’s a part of me that will always be disappointed when I’m not playing for England, and not making the World Cup squad was hard,” he admits upon reflection. “Playing for England is always my main goal, it’s one of the reasons I

By Tayler Willson play rugby, it’s the reason most people do. You want to play at the highest possible level.” The ultimately disappointing World Cup campaign saw Lancaster step down as head coach in November, before being replaced by Eddie Jones. Despite his omission, Yarde holds no grudges and praised the former coach’s influence on the English game: “I wouldn’t say I’m happy he’s [Stuart Lancaster’s] gone, I think it’d be wrong to undermine what he did for English rugby. He reinstalled that culture and what it meant to play for England. For large parts he had us playing the best rugby an England side had played since 2003. He gave us moments that are going to live long in the fans’ memories.” Yarde blamed a lack of confidence for England’s early World Cup exit and thinks the team peaked too early under Lancaster: “We didn’t go for it [the World Cup] enough. I think maybe the pressure of being the host nation affected us, and the weight of the fan’s expectations too. “We looked a little reserved and we

probably didn’t take enough chances. If you look, the 12 months previous to that we beat Wales and Australia and we really went out and played our game, that was our best rugby and maybe it came too early. But that’s the way Stuart (Lancaster) taught us to play: with no fear – we expressed ourselves. At the World Cup it looked as if we were scared to do that.” As a reward for his impressive performances for Harlequins this season, the 23-year-old was called-up to Eddie Jones’ Six Nations squad. “It’s massive for me to be called up,” he tells me, “after not making the World Cup It gave me motivation and made me work that bit harder in pre-season with Quins. I was excited to get back and get stuck into games. I wanted to prove to whoever the new manager was going to be that I was good enough and for now it’s paid off.” Before a small injury saw him side-lined for three weeks, Yarde had been playing some of the best rugby of his career. He accepts, though, that after a run of games, the break did give him time to regain fitness and he feels fitter than ever going into February’s tournament: “I was

really happy with how the first part of the season went, then I picked up and injury and was out for a few weeks, but over the last few weeks I’ve been finding my feet again and finding that momentum I had at the start of the season. “It [the injury] was probably a blessing in disguise, I was feeling pretty fatigued to be honest with you. I still think there’s more I can prove and there’s more I have to give, I’ve never felt better in myself. I’m excited about the challenge the Six Nations brings. “We’re a tri-nation, we’ve brilliant players and we’re always going to be there or there abouts,” he continued, “It’s about, now, building through and learning fast. Until we meet up for the first time as a squad, spend some time with each other, learn how he (Eddie Jones) wants to play and how he wants us to approach games, we’ll see from there. But he’s an experienced coach, a coach many are familiar with and he has a proven track record. Everything’s now in place for us to really push on now and become the best team we can be.”

Learn to Love Your Running Running is the world’s cheapest workout, easiest therapy and the surest cure for creative block I’ve ever come across. The way you remember running is entirely different to what running really is. No idea why it works like that, but it does. By Tayler Willson

D

eep in the mind’s eye, running is a hell-like, sweat-covered beating with your sole pounding on pavement, pain and niggles shooting up rapidly-numbing shins and knees, face changing to an uncomfortable, swollen red. It’s wet, it’s itchy and it’s depressing. All this torment to get a little bit further forward than you were already. Remembering running in such a negative way is a trick of the mind. It’s a preventative concoction (Googled that). But maybe our body isn’t too keen on us blowing out of our behinds and gasping for air while our poor heart thuds back and forth two-hundred and something times a minute. What could take less panache, less finesse, less grunt or masculinity than running? Damn, son – you say to your jog-happy running child – learn to catch a ball, kick a ball, bang a cross-court baseline winner. Running? One leg then the other? You’re alright. Bit beige, that. Bit vanilla. Here’s the crux of running: there’s no competitiveness. There’s no win or lose. Nobody will be impressed that you can easily run 15 kilometres without stopping. The run is entirely between you and yourself. This is, however, where the

enigma, the elegance and the beauty of running really begins. I’ve run while worried. Be it about work, girls, what’s happened, what’s going to happen, what I’d like to happen and whether or not I can make it happen. But running makes you force the question. Without anything to distract, you stare your anxieties, conundrums and options dead in the eye. It’s confrontational. There are two especially good times to take a run: First, when you’re elated. You find adrenaline and joy propelling you forward. For some reason, running happy allows your body to temporarily ignore its aerobic capacity. For a few miles, you’ll breeze past foot traffic, try to keep pace with cyclists, and take furious pride in each desperate gasp of air. The other especially good time to take a run is when you’re miserable. It’s one of life’s happy accidents, like the creation of gas and air or that time you forgot you left £50 in your weather-proof mac. Incidentally, running miserable bears a ton of resemblance to running when happy. In this case it’s the torture of the body that distracts the pain of the mind.

Sometimes you’ll run away from a problem. More often, you’ll run through it. Sometimes you mightn’t know if it’s sweat or rain or tear rolling down your face, but you’ll always arrive home slightly better. Running can gift you all of these things and probably more. I haven’t found a better way to clear my mind, to kickstart an idea, to break through a sticking point. For all the praising of having that lightbulb moment in the shower – and, come on, we’ve all thought of something half-decent in the shower – I’ve had almost every single one of my Big Ideas (a handful) on a long, slow run. Entire stories have trickled out of my mind, a gently unravelling thread of sentences. It’s so consistently effective. There’s a trance point when everything that was once smudged across your mind comes into sharp focus. Really, it’s just like – and stay with me – meditation. I know right. The key is repetition. Repeating the same action over and over allows the mind to relax. You become mesmerised. Like, actually mesmerised. When your mind relaxes, great things can happen.

Let’s talk practicalities, and first things first you need gear that: a) works and b) won’t get in the way. You need to really zone out, okay? This means those ripped football shorts you had even at school that draw blood by chafe cannot be in your running wardrobe. For the most part, your kit is unimportant. But comfy shorts, socks and t-shirt is essential. If you are determined to invest some cash into your new hobby, freerunning shoes would be good. Naturally, we need to talk accessories, too. There can’t be any. You won’t fall into a trance if you’re fiddling with your new, overpowered in-ear headphones or jostling with your iPhone for that upbeat perfect song. Unfortunately, it’s gotta be you and the world. Nothing else. I’m not promising that running will be different from what you remember, mind. It will still be that uncomfortable, wet, sticky stuff you remember. Stick it out, though, and eventually it’ll come good. In a few weeks/ months, you’ll find yourself running a tree-lined street on a cold, fresh morning. You’ll be on the home stretch. You’ll be sweat-drenched and clear-minded, and you’ll decide that you probably don’t need to go home just yet.

THE HISTORY OF CORINTHIAN CASUALS FC For a club that’s, at one time or another, had the likes of Rivelino, Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Socrates amongst its ranks, you’d be forgiven for not believing that S.C. Sporting Corinthians Paulista – more commonly now known as Corinthians - may have never been were it not for a small club in Tolworth.

By Tayler Willson Corinthian Casuals Football Club currently ply their trade in Isthimian League Division One South and were formed 1939 following the merge of two local teams: one called Corinthians FC and the other Casuals FC. “It was two clubs originally,” Corinthian Casuals’ current Press Officer, Stuart Tree, tells me. “One called Corinthian, one called Casuals, with the former the more well-known. The Corinthian were formed by the England FA initially to defeat the Scottish who, at the time, were world beaters. They were easily beating anyone they came up against. “The Corinthian team was made up of some of the best players from the top schools and universities in the country – Oxford and Cambridge, really – and they, in essence, became the first England team. The kit was white and it’s regarded that that’s the inspiration to why the nowadays England National team, Leeds United and, in fact, Real Madrid wear white too.” In 1910 Corinthian began travelling the world and spreading the word of football. Stuart continued: “They played a lot of relatively new national sides and literally took football around the globe – most notably when they travelled to Brazil. “They went to Brazil late 1910 and a British guy called Charles Miller, who working there on the railways, had set up a team with local Brazilians, some working on the railways too and some at local factories. The Corinthian came over and played them thus inspiring five of the railway workers to start their own side in the English side’s honour. They called it: Corinthians Paulista.”

At the time, Corinthian were one of the world’s best-known teams, and such was their fame that they were invited back to Brazil on two occasions. They returned in 1913 and scheduled a game against their namesake in Sao Paulo in August 1914. But when their ship docked in north-eastern Brazil on their first stop, they learned that war had broken out between Britain and Germany. The four players who were in the Reserve of Officers took the next boat home and their 13 colleagues continued on to Rio. When they got there they stayed long enough to see the city but then decided en masse to return home and support their team mates. After dodging German battleships and U-boats, every one of them signed up for active service. Some of the club’s greatest names were on the tour to Brazil, they included Cuthbert Brisley, then considered one of the game’s best goalscorers, and Max Woosnam, who, as well as playing for Corinthian and captaining Manchester City, hit a century at Lord’s, won a Wimbledon doubles title, and scored a maximum 147 break at snooker. Since the merge and creation of Corinthian Casuals FC in 1939, the club’s steadily increased their attendance and facilities, they had Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew on their books for a time in the eighties and they’ve slowly begun to reignite their visits to where it all began. In 1988 they travelled to Sao Paulo and played a Corinthians Paulista team made up of legends, in 2001 they came up against their U21 side, but it was on the hundredth anniversary of when they first met that the two first teams eventually came face-to-face again.

“We didn’t disgrace ourselves,” Stuart tells me when recalling last year’s trip, “I thought we might get hammered, but it took until 78 minutes for them to score before they grabbed two more late goals. But 3-0 isn’t a disgrace against one of the best teams on their continent – I admit we did slightly park the bus though!” The players that travelled on last year’s tour – and everyone that’s in some way associated with the club – is made well aware of the club’s history and significance in world football. For a club associated with many astounding facts, Stuart finds it apt that each player should know what the shirt they’re wearing means. “As well as letting the players know about the club and telling them things verbally, we give them a handbook. We feel it’s important they know what the club’s responsible for and they know what they’re now a part of. The lad’s that went out to Brazil last year were very well briefed. Over Christmas the squad went to France to visit some of the graves of the Corinthians who lost their lives in WW1 too, it was all very overwhelming, but important to the players and staff.” Corinthians Paulista won the prestigious Copa Libertadores in 2012, they’re twotime World Club Championship winners, they’ve won the Brazilian league six times since 1990, and they play in front of 50,000 home fans each week with over 30,000,000 fans worldwide. Knowing that a small non-league side in Tolworth is at the heart of such a creation really does bring to the forefront how powerful the world of football really can be.

The jockeys must be amateurs and either past or existing members of any of the Armed Forces, making the race unique in every sense. A day steeped in history, it remains one of the Royal Artillery’s flagship days, hugely popular with the Regiment and race goers alike. www.sandown.thejockeyclub.co.uk

The Nuts Challenge

Skedaddle Spring Series

21st February, Village Hall, Gomshall Lane

5th, 6th March, Swires Farm, Dorking

10th April, Tunnel Hill, Pirbright

It’s cold, it’s wet, but it’s a beautiful time of the year to get out and about – especially in Surrey.

How nutty are you? I mean, really, how actually nutty are you? Because there’s room for everyone on the Nuts Challenge. Whether you’re only slightly nutty – a light sprinkling of loon, say – or you’ve actually completely lost the plot, there’s a place.

It may be a few months off, but it’s better to sign up in advance and give yourself a bit of time to prepare with these sorts of events. The Skedaddle Spring Series is a much loved season-opener made up of 4 rounds, which uses some of the best all weather venues in the South and offers you well prepared, superb courses.

The Nuts Challenge is an endurance event where participants make their way around an assault course overcoming mental and physical tests, as well as getting filthy and having fun at the same time.

The Series is headline sponsored by holiday company www.skedaddle.co.uk who lead the way in innovative cycling holidays both in the UK and worldwide and supported by loads of your favourite local bike shops which means that there is a large prize pool of both winners and spot prizes.

Our county boasts some of the most picturesque landscapes in the country and all year round it should be enjoyed. With that in mind, we bring you Shere Adventure Race: Test your navigation and strategy with an off-road adventure. Using a 1:25,000 OS map, which we provide, the task is to navigate trails and hills on foot and bike and collect as many check points as you can in the set time. Enter on your own, if you dare, or as a pair, all the while enjoying the fresh, winter’s air. I’m a poet and I didn’t even know it (I did). www.triadventure.co.uk/winter3

Ranging from one lap (7 kilometres) to four (28 kilometres, obviously) there’s room for all to enjoy. So, what’s better than enjoying the biting, cold, wet Surrey weather, covered in mud and out of breath? Knew you’d agree. www.thenutschallenge.co.uk

There are categories for riders of all ages and abilities, so there’s not really any excuse not to get involved. Unless you’re busy of course, but, who plans three months in advance? Exactly. www.moredirt.com/event/1425

Woking was ranked higher than a number of well-known towns in the South and South East, including Surrey’s own Camberley, which was still impressively ranked in fifth.

The report follows a number of new additions to Woking town centre, including Côte, Bill’s Restaurant, Carluccio’s and Tante Marie Culinary Academy. In addition, FatFace has recently opened its new flagship store, along with Smiggle, the Australian

The council has also invested significantly in Commercial Way, improving the public realm through the introduction of new paving and seating. Longer-term, planning consent has been granted for Victoria Square, the comprehensive mixed-use retail-led development on lands to the west of Wolsey Place shopping centre.

FEBRUARY 2016

TAKING THE TIME TO TALK

Valentine’s Day fast approaches this February and whilst love and sweet talk may be on the lips of many, times can also be tough for quarrelling couples who may have quite feasibly grown apart from each other. Time can heal and it’s good to talk but what if that time has been spent and there are no more words of appeasement to mutter to one another? If you find yourselves thinking that enough might just be enough then read on and let RHW Solicitors debunk the mythical world of divorce. What’s love got to do with it anyway? 1. I can get divorced in 6 weeks. The media reports celebrities getting a “6 week” divorce and online divorce companies say they can give you a “quickie” divorce. What they are actually talking about is a waiting period that has to happen between the second and third final stage of a divorce process. The divorce starts with a form called a Petition, and once this is served and acknowledged, the second stage is applying for Decree Nisi. When this is pronounced, the person applying for the divorce has to wait 6 weeks and 1 day before applying for the final stage, Decree Absolute. This is where the six week myth comes from. The whole process can actually take 2-3 months depending on the speed of the Court you make your application to.

2. I paid for everything during our marriage and it’s all in my name, so it’s all mine.

but not get married, you can still secure your interests using a cohabitation agreement.

Some individuals can contribute a lot of financial wealth to a marriage, and they might believe that this will be all theirs after divorce. This is not always the case. There is usually a starting position of a 50/50 split of everything, and then the facts of the marriage are applied e.g. length of the marriage, if there are children etc. Some spouses may make financial sacrifices during the marriage, and the Court think this should be recognised. If you’re unsure whether you have an interest in your spouse’s wealth, check with a family solicitor.

5. If I agree to pay their divorce costs, I will have to pay everything straight away.

3. If we get divorced, I won’t see the kids again. Getting divorced is an emotional rollercoaster for everyone involved, including the children. People can fear that their relationship with their children will change, but there is a presumption of the Court that children will always benefit from a healthy, supportive relationship from both parents unless there are any risks of harm to the children. It is important that people coparent successfully even if they are no longer a couple.

4. We have a common law marriage, so if we break up I will be protected anyway. Common Law marriage is a total myth. If you are living together without being married then you do not have the same rights as if you were a married couple. This can affect a lot of your joint finances and life security. If you wish to live with someone long term,

You may have seen mention of “divorce costs” within a divorce application. Sometimes you may be asked to pay these on behalf of the other party, or vice versa. Some fear that this means unlimited costs, including anything related to finances or the children. These costs are only in respect of the petition, decree nisi, and decree absolute, they must be reasonable, and they are only payable after decree absolute. Need some advice on a Divorce or any other Family Law issue? email: family@rhw.co.uk or call 01483 302000 and speak to rhw’s Family Law Team.
