Your Community News STILL TIME TO HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF GUILDFORD’S TOWN CENTRE
We know. It feels like public consultation on the Guildford Draft Town Centre Masterplan has been going on forever, in one form or another. But the latest bout of public pulse taking, a consultation running from 2nd October until Monday 16th of November means that there is still time to make your views heard. The draft Town Centre Masterplan, produced by urban designers Allies & Morrison, features radical design ideas for the future of the town. It includes proposals to overhaul prominent areas such as introducing a new riverside community park, more pedestrianised

areas, fewer cars, more cyclists and ‘streets for people’. The document also includes options on how to manage traffic flow so that pedestrians and cyclists have better access to the town centre. It also aims to ensure the right balance of housing, business and transport development in the town. All these issues were raised through public feedback from the initial town centre vision consultation last year which helped shape the draft masterplan. Following this consultation, the public’s feedback and ideas will help inform the
This year’s Living and Ageing Well in Surrey Awards will be taking place on Wednesday 18 November at Dorking Halls from 4pm to 6pm. Nominations from people keen to highlight the work of others who care for the elderly closed on 7th October. So it simply remains for the winners to be drawn from nine categories transport, technology, community, carers and dementia.
final development plan for the town centre. The council will then identify what can be delivered in the short-term and test what is possible longer-term, making sure that any individuals and organisations affected by future plans are fully involved in the process. Key parts of the final Masterplan will be included in the new draft Local Plan for the borough. What do you want ’Guildford 2.0’ to look like? Visit guildford.gov.uk and let them know.
The Living and Ageing Well in Surrey programme is run by Surrey County Council who work closely with partners in health, borough and district councils, voluntary, community and faith organisations, and local people with shared guiding principles and values: to make Surrey the best possible place to live and age well. GIVE BLOOD AT THE SPECTRUM TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER | 12PM-9PM | GUILDFORD SPECTRUM
Giving blood is one of the noblest, and simplest, things we can do to help others. Donated blood is a lifeline for many people needing long-term treatments, not just in emergencies. There is a constant need for regular blood supply because blood can only be stored for a limited time before use. Regular blood donations by a sufficient number of healthy people is needed to ensure that safe blood will be available whenever and wherever it is needed. You can help save a life or alleviate someone’s suffering by visiting the NHS Give Blood hosted session in Spectrum arenas on the 10th November.

More than 20 Surplus police stations around Surrey are due to receive a new lease of life as buildings for a myriad of purposes including supermarkets, residential, retirement living, office and a range of community uses including dance hall, children’s nursery and a free school.
For more information visit blood.co.uk Property specialists Bruton Knowles are close to completing a four-year programme to dispose of 21 surplus police stations on behalf of Surrey Police - many of which are located in ultradesirable Surrey locations. Fraser Castle who is based at the firm’s Guildford office has superintended the programme and says: “We have essentially finished this programme of sales for Surrey Police, having just received planning permission for Camberley Police Station. “We expect a positive planning decision for Haslemere Police Station on Wednesday and are about to commence the marketing exercise for the final property - Epsom Police Station.
WOKING FIRE STATION OPEN DAY 14TH NOVEMBER | 10AM TO 4PM | CAWSEY WAY, WOKING, GU21 6HD
Woking Fire Station is giving locals an opportunity to gain valuable insight the activities of the fire service. Members of the public can see at first hand the range of activities involved with being a modern firefighter, with demonstrations of particular firefighting or rescue skills throughout the day. The event also presents the opportunity to learn about some important fire safety messages. Through a simple questionnaire, the fire crew can look at potential problem areas in your home and offer advice and guidance on how to reduce the risk of fire. The check also covers advice about fitting and maintaining smoke alarms and getting people to think about escape plans for their home should a fire occur. There are also displays highlighting the dangers of fire and you can take home various leaflets with simple but vital fire safety advice.
Other stations due for disposal include Esher, Walton-on-Thames, East Molesey, Epsom, Dorking, Haslemere, Cranleigh, Banstead, Camberley, Egham, Farnham, Leatherhead, Woking, Cobham, Sunbury, Lingfield, Lightwater, Frimley, Byfleet, Ripley and Ash. The stations were put up for sale by Surrey Police Authority in 2010, in an effort to make savings required by government funding cuts. Police staff were relocated to council offices and other locations. Police and Crime Commissioner Kevin Hurley said it was ‘unfortunate’ he was unable to stop the sales which were set in motion by Surrey Police Authority before he was elected. No plans have been made to sell off the force’s headquarters, Mount Browne, in Artington, Guildford.

Your Community News STARS HELP CHILDREN’S HOSPICE CHARITY RAISE OVER £100,000 FOR SICK CHILDREN Stars including Simon Cowell, Lauren Silverman, Tony Hadley and Dame Joan Collins were out in force to show their support for last month’s Shooting Star Chase Ball, which raised more than £100,000 for children with life-limiting conditions in London and Surrey. The event, which took place at The Dorchester in London on Saturday 3 October, featured performances by British harmony swing group, Jack Pack, and winner of America’s Got Talent, ventriloquist Paul Zerdin – and an auction which raised a massive £77,000. Money-can’t-buy lots were on offer to the highest bidder and included use of a private jet and lunch in France, a VIP screening of the Rugby World Cup Final at London’s Mayfair Hotel, and an evening with George Clooney. An Afternoon Tea with Joan Collins and Julian Clary raised £3,000, while Simon Cowell donated an impromptu last lot of four ‘meet and greet’ tickets to The X Factor final, which raised £8,500. Simon, who was announced as Shooting Star Chase Vice President earlier this year, then matched the
amount the tickets raised with an additional donation. On the night guests also enjoyed a four course meal by executive chef Henry Brosi, speeches from Vice Presidents Simon Cowell and Tony Hadley, and a presentation of artwork made by children at the hospices to Patron Joan Collins in honour of her Damehood. Karen Sugarman, Director of Fundraising at Shooting Star Chase, said: “As always, I have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support from every one of our guests. The Shooting Star Chase Ball is always such a fabulous night and we are thrilled to raise so much yet again. This will make a significant difference to families whose lives are turned upside-down and need the vital care and support of our hospice service.” The total funds raised from the night is expected to exceed £100,000. Now in its 11th year, the Shooting Star Chase Ball has raised more than £1 million since its launch in 2004. Visit shootingstarchase.org.uk for more information
TASK GROUP FORMED TO HELP REFUGEES Following the example of other councils around the county and UK, Guildford Borough Council have set up a refugee task group to look at how they can work with local people, organisations and faith communities to respond to the refugee crisis. Initial plans include creating a register of private landlords who might have appropriate and suitable homes they wish to offer and a local fund raising drive to support national and other charities. But with over 3,000 households already needing affordable homes across the borough, the council says it recognises that “we have to work very carefully to manage this alongside our current waiting lists and housing options for local people.” Lead Councillor for Community Health
and Sport, Cllr Iseult Roche, explains: “We want our borough to be a supportive and thriving place for all. Ensuring that any refugees who come to our area are assisted in the best way is not a quick fix and we want to properly assess and manage their long-term needs.” We are waiting to hear more details about the Government’s plans, but in the meantime we are pushing ahead with some of our own initiatives. These must be holistic and focus on the overall well-being of the most vulnerable refugees identified by the United Nations for protection in the UK. “Refugee families, adults and children who come to our area will require intensive ongoing support,” he continued, “with access to skills development, education
and health as well as places to live. We are also looking to coordinate a local fund raising drive to support national and other charities, so that people can donate to help meet their immediate needs and longer-term integration. Continued close working with Guildford Diocese and the wider faith communities helps us see how we could assist with their existing and new initiatives.” There are many charities working to help the refugee crisis, but if you would like to help visit refugeecouncil.org.uk, savethechildren.org.uk or redcross.org.uk. STAY SAFE! KEEP THE BURGULARS AT BAY!
A
s we head into the winter months with longer and darker evenings, crime patterns show that this can be a time of increased residential burglaries. The lead up to Christmas is a very appealing time for burglars; the combination of increased amounts of valuables in people’s homes coupled with longer periods where people are away from their properties make for rich pickings. To counteract this Surrey Police is launching its annual campaign between 26 October and 15 November which forms part of a three week force focus on burglary. Over previous campaigns we know that across Surrey the amount of burglaries that happen has significantly reduced, and that Surrey residents are helping to prevent these by securing their properties to protect themselves from burglary by ensuring doors are locked, and lights are left on. However, even with this decrease, we still want to make Surrey a no go area for potential burglars. This can be done by local residents registering their items on Immobilise.
LOVE YOUR STUFF? REGISTER IT! Registering your belongings free with Immobilise improves your chances of getting it back if it is lost or stolen, and can also help us in tracking and catching those responsible if you are burgled. Immobilise is an independent service that is supported by UK police forces including Surrey Police. The Immobilise National Property Register is the world’s largest register of ownership details and links in with the police national property database when items are reported as stolen. You can register a mix of different items including bicycles, mobile phones, laptops, cameras and game consoles. To find out more about the Immobilise service and to sign up free, visit www.immobilise.com
IS IT NOTHING? OR IS IT THE INFORMATION WE NEED TO CATCH A BURGLAR? By working closely with the public to gain information about suspicious activity, we can increase the intelligence we use to actively hunt and catch burglars. The partnership between the public and the police is vital to the service we can provide and extra information can make all the difference. We would rather investigate a suspected burglary than be called when it’s too late, so if you see something suspicious in action in your street, dial 999 and let us know. What does suspicious activity look like? It could be someone jumping over walls; hanging around a house; peering through windows or doors, someone trying to force entry, or even someone running from a scene. It could also be someone who has suddenly had an increase in possessions who appears to be quickly selling them on. All information is useful to us, so don’t ignore your suspicions. You could have the information we need to catch a burglar, so let us know what happened, when and where, a description of the individual (age, sex, race, height, weight, clothing), and if necessary a vehicle description and registration number. To keep up to date with our burglary activity and for advice on what you can do to help, find us on SurreyPolice

Diwali, the Festival of Lights
On Thursday 12 November Woking will be lit up with a stunning parade of colourful lanterns to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights
W
oking is unquestionably one of the most multicultural towns in Surrey. The Shah Jahan Mosque, for example, was the first purpose-built mosque in Britain. Historically, there has long been a large tightly-knit Italian community, many of whom originated from the Sicilian town of Mussomeli. And now the town can lay claim to Surrey’s most significant Diwali celebrations – and it’s sure to be a cracking evening… This free event, open to all, will begin at 6pm from Gloucester Square (outside the Civic Offices), before making its way through the Town Centre and ending at the H.G. Wells Conference and Events Centre. We shall give you further info about what to expect on the day, but first up, a bit of explanation about Diwali is perhaps in order. Celebrated by Hindus, as well as Jains and Sikhs, the Festival of Lights is one of the most famous festivals in South Asia and celebrated by many countries in the region. It marks the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. Prayers are offered before one or more deities, with most common being Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth and prosperity. In India and Nepal particularly, it is one of the happiest holidays and a time for shopping (we feel for those of you who celebrate Diwali and Christmas six weeks apart…): people buy new clothes for themselves and their families, as well as gifts, appliances, kitchen utensils, even expensive items such as cars and gold jewellery. And why does it take place at this time of year? Well Diwali night enters on the new moon – the darkest night – at the end of the Hindu lunar month of Ashvin and the start of the month of Kartika. In the Gregorian calendar, this typically falls towards the end of October, or first half of November each year.
So now hopefully we’ve all learned a little something. But what can you expect at Woking’s event this November? Well, a stunning display of lanterns and live Indian music, but that merely scratches the surface… Leading the parade will be MAUK Chenda Team, a traditional Chenda Melam group, followed by local schools and community groups. In the lead up to the parade local schools will enjoy a range of educational workshops exploring a variety of Diwali traditions, with many schools and community groups creating their own unique lanterns for the parade. The Diwali parade organisers will be presenting a short evening of Indian music, song and dance immediately after the parade. The event at the H.G. Wells Centre will feature performances such as Kerala drumming and traditional Indian dance. This is free to attend and will be hosted by the Woking Malayalee Association with support from cultural organisation, The Art of Living, and other community representatives. So an evening of enlightening and illuminating celebrations will be taking place in the centre of Woking. And we cannot recommend your attendance highly enough… Find out more about Diwali Celebrations in Woking on Thursday 12th November by visiting woking.gov.uk/diwali

These men died because they ran into the fire. Then as now the streets of heaven are too crowded with angels. But now, some 100 years after the conflict, if we think we have measured our capacity to meet a challenge, we should look up and be reminded that that capacity may well be limitless. This is a time to remember those heroes. To save for them one glance when we go to the places they can no longer go. And when the time comes when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, we will all take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes left behind.

The Butcher of Bagshot
A
few months back, drinking red wine and eating Meat the Greek, I wrote about a Highwayman. As it turns out these mobile-thieving b*stards were everywhere, and I found out about a rather dandy fellow by the name of James Whitney. Jimbo was a 17th century butcher’s son originally from Hertfordshire. Having had a crack at dad’s job, he decided that it was a bit too much like hard work so he went off to London to seek his fortune. In the end he spent a few years committing petty crime to fund a life of Jagerbombs, snuff and bedding as many women as possible. At some point at the age of 23, Whitney presumably woke up one morning surrounded by empty tinnies, women and Domino’s boxes and obviously thought to himself “Right! I need to get a grip of the situation.”
the King during the civil war. All the other chancers, thieves and general wrong ‘uns looked up to these twits because even in the sewer, there’s a class system. Jimbo went the wholehog with his act, covering himself with bling and always being polite even when threatening to blow someone’s brains out for their pocket watch. By 1690 everything was going rather well. James had sorted himself with a well networked gang of about 50 or so guys who were all divided into different skill sets. Some rode out with him, others scouted out hides, and others followed rich guys and plan heists. He even had a mole in the Surrey Magistrate’s court who kept an eye
to take the p*** so he caught up Hull about a week later, slapping him about a bit, robbing him blind and strapping him to a horse backwards before slapping it on the rump to watch him canter off over Bagshot Heath. Of course there was one heist too many and that day came when one of his dickers revealed that a coach was carrying a chest full of bunce and was being escorted by 12 Dragoons (mounted, seriously hard soldiers with knives and all sorts dangling off them). Instead of thinking “might give this one a miss” Jimbo went for it. Turns out the guy in the coach with the chest was the Duke of Marlborough, who was a war hero after recently giving the French a damned good thrashing. He was also as hard as a coffin nail and the sort of bloke who would never, ever surrender.
“All the other chancers, thieves and general wrong ‘uns looked up to these twits because even in the sewer, there’s a class system.”
So he popped down to Primarni and bought himself a nice suit along with a rapier (sort of sword Inigo Montoya uses in Princess Bride) and a pistol. The shopping trip wasn’t over yet; he then stole the best horse he could lay his hands on. He was ready to be a Highwayman. Huzzah! Back then a lot of those first highwaymen were upper-class types who lost an awful lot of cash backing
on what was going on there. He had fencers to sell on goods; everything was great. One day the mole at the court reported that a certain Mr William Hull was wandering about the corridors of Millmead claiming that one day he would watch Whitney ride his horse backwards. Basically this meant that he would see Jimbo hang because back in those days men who were to be hanged were taken to the gallows sitting backwards on a horse. Jimbo couldn’t miss an opportunity
So with 40 of his crew Jimbo attacked the dragoons and the coach. A pitched battle ensued with bodies and bits of bodies everywhere. The crew got a pasting and those who didn’t die were rounded up. Jimbo did legs and hid out at Spoons. As always at this point in the movie one of the captured men went grass to save his own neck and Whitney was soon nicked. He was hanged in December 1694. A certain William Hull was watching.

An Evening with Noel Fielding
29th November / New Victoria Theatre, Woking Noel Fielding (star of The Mighty Boosh and Never Mind The Buzzcocks), brings his brand of unabashed, brazenly bizarre comedy to Woking’s New Victoria Theatre for one night of weird, later this month. We caught up with Mr Fielding in last month’s edition and he had this to say about what qualities a hammer may possess to be considered posh, “a posh hammer would have to have its own maze, or maybe its own moat surrounding its house. One big monocle, or a little tweed case that it sleeps in at night”. Nuff said Noel. Nuff said. For more information and to book tickets visit atgtickets.com or call the box office on 0844 871 7645

TALKING TO: CRAIG REVEL HORWOOD Busier than a ballroom busting with glitter the size of gold bullion, Craig Revel Horwood has a schedule that would leave many of us gasping for air. In amongst the height of Strictly season, and prior to preparations for panto, Craig returns to the stage this month to play master villain and social service nightmare Miss Hannigan in the touring production of Annie at Woking’s New Victoria Theatre. We caught up with Craig to talk shop.
You come to Woking at the end of November to play the infamous Miss Hannigan in Annie. How did that role come about for you? It was a bizarre telephone call from the producers (David Ian & Michael Harrison) who said, “oh we’re thinking about doing Annie and we would love you to do it”, and I went “oh I don’t know; children, animals…it’s not really my bag you know.” I was thinking what could I do with it to make it different and they said “No, no we don’t want you to direct and choreograph, we want you to be in it, we want you to play Miss Hannigan” and actually I thought it was a fantastic idea. I read the script and loved it! I hadn’t been on the boards as a proper actor for twenty years. They had seen me in panto as the wicked queen and came up with the idea for it then, so we brought it to fruition. It’s been brilliant; I’ve absolutely loved it. She’s such a wonderful character and villains are so cool to play!

FAMILY
Does Miss Hannigan have any characteristics that may match yours, even if they may be on a largely exaggerated scale? Or not so exaggerated?
at the top of the leader board, but the underdog could be someone like Ainsley Harriot because he gets a lot of people on his side.
What I love about her is that she’s a desperate alcoholic, ginswigging woman who’s lusting after any man she can get her hands on and who hates children; who is prepared to get a $50,000 reward for Annie fraudulently and then kill them… I mean they’re the kind of parts you want to play aren’t they? They’re much more interesting than the love themes.
You have to remember that 50% of the vote is from the audience and if the audience don’t vote then people like Peter Andre might not get through because they think that everybody else is voting for him. The contestants almost have to go out there and canvas like a politician.
Did Annie play any kind of part in your childhood at all?
Strictly has been running for 12 years now. Did you ever imagine its global success? How has that changed your life?
I always thought Carol Burnett was fantastic and I really like the moral of the story. People think it has a very thin story line but I completely disagree with that - I think the way it’s sometimes played on the stage traditionally, it can seem very two-dimensional, but it’s not at all! When you consider it, these poor kids are stuck in an orphanage with this rat-bag of a woman, who is looking after them and using them as slave labour in order to get her gin supplies, whilst living off the state in the depression.
The first couple of weeks Len and I thought, “they’ll pull this, it’s terrible” and actually it just kept gaining momentum all the way through, until it was such a success by the end of the first series that they commissioned another directly after for the Christmas period. The first season was in May/June and then they rang in October and said “we’re doing another one, would you be interested in coming back?” and I said “yes” by all means.
It’s really quite bad, with no prospects for the future, so anytime they run into anyone with money they’re all clawing for it, but of course it’s never about money with Annie and that’s the beauty that teaches the children. The moral of
Ever since that it’s gone to 53 countries worldwide and broken the Guinness Book of World Records for the most produced format in the world so it’s a wonderful flag for the BBC to be waving.
“she’s a desperate alcoholic, gin-swigging woman who’s lusting after any man she can get her hands on … I mean they’re the kind of parts you want to play aren’t they? They’re much more interesting than the love themes.” the story is that it doesn’t matter who you are, love always makes it in the end.
Who in your opinion is the best professional dancer (that you’ve worked with or that you admire)?
You’ve been fortunate enough to have performed in and choreographed some of the world’s most well-known stage productions. Is there any one particular production that you would love to work on?
I really love Aljaz Skorjanec, I really admire him, love his look, love his dancing, I think he’s charismatic and his now fiancé, Janette Manrara is one of my favourites as well. She’s just a brilliant dancer and what’s brilliant about her is that she’s an all-rounder; she can do jazz, she can do tap, she can do modern, she can do contemporary, she can do ballroom, she can do Latin. She’s just phenomenal.
Well it was Gypsy but now that’s been done brilliantly, so I’ve been outdone there. I had really wanted to do that and have a bash. I loved it and I would have done it exactly the same way, but I’m delighted that they brought it back and it’s fantastic. I’m looking at new projects and hoping to make them work. I’ve done a lot of revivals and now am wanting to do brand new stuff, to develop it, to make it live and happen and to try and get something original and wonderful out there that has some sort of legacy.
Who do you tip to win this year’s ‘Strictly’? Have you got a favourite contestant? I think Helen George is extremely good. Peter Andre is obviously flying high at the moment because he’s up there

TALKING TO:
RUBY WAX Following a sell-out UK tour in 2014, Ruby Wax– comedian, writer, mental health campaigner – will bring her hilariously insightful show Sane New World, based on her bestselling book of the same name, to Woking’s New Victoria Theatre on Sunday 15th November.
By Rich Lee We caught up with Ruby to talk about how, using the knowledge she has gained from her Masters Degree in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy at Oxford University, we can better understand why we sabotage our own sanity and how we can survive the stresses of the 21st century. You say that humans just aren’t cut out for the 21st century. Why? Well, some of our brains are still partly caveman. Our brain still responds as if we’re in the bush and haven’t got any adaptive features to deal with so many fear levels coming in. Our brains can’t take so much information in a world where we’re bombarded by bad news and forcefed information. I can just about take in the weather then I’m exhausted. So if you have a complicated piece of machinery you need another piece of machinery that knows how to deal with it in case it breaks down. Which is where mindfulness comes into play? Or something else like it. I’m not an evangelist. Someday it could be something mechanical, bio-feedback, but I just kept my study to mindfulness. Your next book, Mindfulness: A Guide to the Frazzled, comes out early next year. What do you explore in that book further to what you already discuss in Sane New World? Well in Sane New World, and the show, I only talk about it for the last three minutes. It’s a comedy show. So with this book my publishers really wanted the full guide. And I did get questions from parents,
about how to deal with babies, teenagers, children and schools. So this book outlines all those questions I was asked. How can mindfulness be taught in schools and among young people? It’s already in schools, it’s called ‘dot-be’. It’s funny, but it’s even incorporated in gaming: they can still kill the guy but they can negotiate with him too. I made that up, but I know that’s where it’s going. And then with kids, there’s a whole bunch of games you can play which are fun, but that sharpen their ability to self-regulate, so they can see that this is what it feels like when you don’t flip your lid. But you’re not repressing it, you’re just noticing it. When you learn what’s coming from you, that solves a lot more problems than looking for someone you can blame. Does mindfulness - being a branch or form of meditation - carry any stigma for some? If they look at the science it shouldn’t. I can’t argue with people who don’t bother with that. I can’t deal with people who think, like, we were born with dinosaurs that’s not my mode of living. Have you received your OBE yet? Not yet but I know I am getting it. You know, once they say you’re getting it, it doesn’t really matter that I’m not holding
it. They take their time. I was impatient to find out, but I’ve got it so I’m fine. How will you celebrate when you get it? When I get it? I’ll probably be 250 years old! So from my deathbed I’ll say ‘thank you’! What can people coming to your show in Woking expect to take away from it? I’ve done it before in Woking… and I’m coming back by popular demand! It doesn’t come across as a lecture; there’s films and special effects so it doesn’t look like a lecture. But I’ve done the show so many times now people know what to expect. I take you on a hilarious tour of the brain and what happens when we start to feel a certain way, and more importantly, how to put on the brakes when it all gets too much. They’ll really laugh but they’ll come away from the show thinking “Oh my god, I didn’t realise that’s the way my mind worked!” Ruby Wax performs at the New Victoria Theatre on Sunday 15th November. Freeze the Atlantic
By Rich Lee What led to you forming Freeze the Atlantic (FTA) after Hundred Reasons?
Forged in the fires of the UK’s 00’s rock resurgence, Freeze the Atlantic rose from the ashes of hard rock heavyweights Rueben and Hundred Reasons, who both emerged from the North Hampshire and Surrey music scene. We caught up with guitarist and founding member Andy Gilmour at the end of a wildly successful year that’s seen the band become one of the most talked about rock acts in the UK …
Hundred Reasons (HR) had sort of petered out, but being the sort of person who can’t just sit there scratching my arse, I needed to start something on my own. I found out my buds in Reuben had decided to stop around the same time. I’d known them for years and I’d always really rated them as musicians. When I put it to them they were both like, “that sounds like a wicked idea!” How do you think your sound’s evolved over the two albums, Speakeasy and the self-titled Freeze the Atlantic? I think it’s now probably louder and darker. The first album, Speakeasy, had its hard moments but very much had a slightly more pop sheen to it. The first album we tried to make as shiny as possible. Whereas with the second album there were more off-kilter ideas, and Liv’s got a very different vocal style to Chris, more gritty, so it’s a lot more of a progression down the dirty, not spotless, route. If there any cock-ups, and they work, we just go with it. Where did the idea come from for the recent split release EP with Welsh Mathcore band the Samoans? We’ve known and played with the Samoans for years, but it came from an off the cuff remark - they asked if we fancied doing a split? And it rolled into that, but what made it different from most split-releases was that we’re covering each other’s songs. We do one of our own and cover one of theirs. And vice versa.
Being veterans of the Surrey & North Hants music scene, what is the state of the local music scene nowadays? Well there seems to be quite a few local bands trying their best to be heard. The public eye is definitely not as on it as it was when Hundred Reasons came out, and Vex Red and Reuben too, but that doesn’t mean there’s not a vibrant scene going on. There’s a lot of really good bands coming out of this area who are really pushing the boundaries. But it’s not about the area, though, it’s just about being a good band. What’s your favourite venue to play around here? I like to think that Dom from the Boileroom in Guildford is flying the flag but Barney Jeavons and the West End Centre in Aldershot are still the centre of the musical universe around here. We did a show for them last month when they celebrated 30 years. I’ve played there so many times it’s not even funny. But the Westy has a very special place in my heart. It’s not just that it’s a great venue it’s the people there. They’re all awesome. What plans does Freeze the Atlantic have for 2016? The plan is to very much crack on with the third album. I’d like to think that the track on the current EP, The Floor is Made of Lava, is a good preview of what’s to come. Finally, for anyone who hasn’t been to an FTA show before, what can they expect? Well, a very loud rock show with a halfFrenchman shouting at you with a gritty accent!
Freeze the Atlantic perform at the West End Centre, Aldershot on Friday 11th December. Follow the band at www.freezetheatlantic.co.uk

A
Surrey based designer has come up with a clever solution to the classic baby memory album for new mums and dads - a beautifully designed book aimed at single sex and adoptive parents…
Their first tooth, their first smile, their first steps. For generations families have chronicled their children’s happiest milestones, and their journey together as a family, by recording photographs, lovingly scrawled pictures, notes and every kind of treasured memory and keepsake in special record books. But while many of these children’s books cater to the traditional family, for Jesse Toksvig-Stewart, a 27-year old photographer from Guildford, none spoke to the kind of family that she belonged to. The daughter of celebrated broadcaster Sandi Toksvig, Jesse and her siblings were raised by Toksvig and Peta Stewart. When Jesse wanted to buy her younger sister a record book that they could remember her early years with, the books on the market only recorded families containing married, heterosexual parents. “My parents had to cross out ‘Dad’ on one side and replace it with ‘Mama’,” says Jesse. “If you cross that name out it kind of makes you feel a little bit illegitimate or odd for having to cross it out at all. We didn’t want that for my little sister. Some [same sex or adopted] families find that, while you might think you’re not that ‘alternative’, when you look at a mainstream baby book it can make you feel a lot more outside of it.”
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Family This gave her the idea for producing her own book. Calling on the skills of her friend and illustrator Kat Willott, together they created My Amazing Family and Me, a children’s record book that celebrates families whatever their makeup. What began as a simple project for her own family, led to Jesse and Kat selfpublishing the book earlier this year, under their company name Ugly Duck Books, inspired by the reception and need expressed by others within the adoption community.
FAMILY Jesse hopes that the success of My Amazing Family and Me could lead to more books and products from Ugly Duck Books that touch on similar issues affecting families. “It’s important to me because a lot of people in my family are gay. And a lot of what’s been happening with same sex marriages has all been very influential and ground breaking. So without really taking a stand I have been involved with it since a very young age. It’s what I’ve grown up with.”
My parents had to cross out ‘Dad’ on one side and replace it with ‘Mama’ Beautifully illustrated and designed throughout and full of fun ways to record a child’s formative experiences, My Amazing Family and Me offers a truly special keepsake for every family. “We know that families come in all shapes and sizes, and some welcome new family members at ages other than birth,” explains Jesse. “So our record book works for a child of any age, as well as any gender. “There’s also room for you to use whatever words you want to describe your family relationships. So you are free to record the way you actually see one another, and the personal names you choose to use, whether they be the traditional ones or something entirely unique.”
Jesse says her own experiences of growing up in a same sex household in Surrey rarely presented a problem. “I wasn’t ever ashamed of it or made to feel technically outcast by it. Because my parents surrounded themselves with lots of great family friends and I had a great core of friends at school who had grown up with me and made me feel comfortable. “If asked, I’d tell people what information I thought they deserved to know. But I remember being little and having certain kids come up to me and say I was going to go to prison and so would my parents. But she’d obviously heard it from ‘older’ ears. But on the whole I didn’t have much trouble.” My Amazing Family and Me is published by Ugly Duck Books and is available through their website www.uglyduckbooks.co.uk and Not on the High Street

id you know the average child catches eight colds a year? If you’re drowning under a sea of tissues, here’s some official advice on treating and avoiding the spread of this common and pesky virus.
How do I keep the bugs at bay? The bad news is you can’t stop your child from getting a cold. Despite telling our children: “Do your coat up or you’ll catch a cold,” getting chilly won’t actually give you the virus. The only thing it will do is help the symptoms to develop, says Dr Hasmukh Joshi, vice-chair of the Royal College of GPs. Cold and flu viruses are passed on through tiny droplets in sneezes or coughs, which other people then breathe in, so teaching your child to put their hand over their mouth when coughing will help prevent it spreading through your family. However an infected person sneezes or coughs into their hand, and then touches another object the germs can then transfer to the next person who touches it. Washing hands is therefore an
essential part of not catching colds from others. Cold and flu viruses can enter your body through the eyes and nose, so not touching your nose and eyes will also reduce your chances of catching a virus. It’s fair to say constant washing of hands and not touching the face is quite a hard set of rules for small children to follow, but it may help you from going down as well! Another piece of bad (and surprising) news is that vitamin C is not actually proven to help prevent colds. An NHS review of 30 trials involving 11,000 people concluded that, “regular ingestion of vitamin C has no effect on common cold incidence in the ordinary population”. A daily dose of vitamin C did, however, slightly reduce the length and severity of colds.

What about the flu jab?
When should I worry?
This winter, the NHS is recommending the flu vaccine for
Dr Rob Hicks says colds aren’t usually serious, although they can be problematic for babies or a child whose immune system is compromised, as there is a risk of a bacterial chest infection. If your child is feeding, drinking, eating and breathing normally and there’s no wheezing, a cough isn’t usually anything to worry about.
•
Children over the age of six months with a long-term health condition
•
Healthy children aged two and three
This vaccine is usually given through a nasal spray (sounds horrible!) In some parts of the country, primary school children between the ages of four and 11 will also be offered the vaccine and over time, all children between two and 16 will be vaccinated each year against flu using the nasal spray.
Should I give my child cough medicines?
Seek medical advice if: •
A baby aged less than three months develops a fever higher than 38°C
•
Cold symptoms last for more than 10 days, particularly if your child is coughing up green, yellow or brown or has a fever
•
Your child is finding it difficult to breathe
•
Your child complains of pain in the nasal passages after two to four days of home treatment
•
Your baby or child seems to have, severe earache (babies with earache often rub their ears to show this)
•
Your child complains of throat pain for longer than three or four days, or their throat pain seems unusually severe
•
Your child develops other symptoms such as pain or swelling in the face or in the chest, a headache or a very bad sore throat
•
Your child seems to be getting worse rather than better
No, don’t use them! The official advice now is that children under the age of six years should not be given any cough medicines. The MHRA is (centre of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) says: “Parents and carers should no longer use over-the-counter cough and cold medicines in children under six. There is no evidence that they work and can cause side effects, such as allergic reactions, effects on sleep or hallucinations. “For 6 to 12 year olds these medicines will continue to be available but will only be sold in pharmacies, with clearer advice on the packaging and from the pharmacist. This is because the risks of side effects is reduced in older children because they weigh more, get fewer colds and can say if the medicine is doing any good.” A glycerine, honey and lemon mixture is said to be just as effective for temporarily soothing the symptoms of a cough.
The NHS points out on its website: “Although it’s upsetting to hear your child cough, coughing helps clear away phlegm from the chest or mucus from the back of the throat. If your child is over the age of one, try a warm drink of lemon and honey.”
How can I treat my child’s cold? The NHS advises: •
Get your child to drink plenty
•
Give them plenty of rest (easier said than done of course with an active toddler!)
•
Don’t fret too much about them not eating
•
Sit them in a steamy bathroom to ease congestion
•
Use child paracetamol or ibuprofen to treat a temperature
You can also use nasal saline drops to relieve the symptoms of congestion in babies and young children. London GP Dr Rob Hicks suggests you can also make a child’s breathing easier by raising the pillow end of their bed or cot by putting books or bricks under the legs or placing a pillow under the mattress (although you should not put anything under the mattress of a baby younger than one year old)

WHERE TO EAT: BARBA
L
a Luna transformed: Does Godalming’s new Italian restaurant have what it takes to win hearts, minds and appetites all over again?
It wasn’t for want of trying. For years, some of the most innovative Italian cooking in Surrey emerged from the kitchens of La Luna in Godalming, gaining that smart little restaurant a loyal local following and no small amount of national recognition. Still, the world of dining can be a fickle mistress, and if La Luna never quite dropped its standards, then customers eventually lost their taste for what owners Daniele Drago and Mark Wright had to offer in the way of modern Italian cuisine.
Where some might have shut up shop and simply sulked away, these two went back to the drawing board, remembered what they loved about the no frills thrills of real Sicilian rustic food that Daniele had known since childhood and decided to put that on a plate instead. If it meant radically refitting their restaurant around it, then so be it. Barbaracca opened its doors on the site of La Luna in September and is as different from its predecessor as pizza is to pasta.. Where La Luna was all stark blacks and whites and elegant angles, Barbaracca tries for warm Sicilian sunshine in a relaxed setting. And they’ve succeeded. A backdrop of distressed woods and Victoriana tiles, hand-decorated vintage plates, Mediterranean blues and mustard yellows effortlessly conjure the kind of family friendly trattoria you’d happily cash in your air miles to experience. This new lease of life isn’t just evident in the food and décor. La Luna’s loyal staff are more energised and welcoming than they’ve ever been, clearly revelling in Barbaracca’s renewed sense of itself. Daniele and his team, uniformly dressed in denim, blue gingham and facial hair, flutter between tables like kinetic moths, spilling with pride in their simpler, yet no less authentic, menus.

More and more Italian restaurants are embracing tapas and Barbaracca have followed suit, making quite the noise about their selection of cicchetti; small bites to share, or hog all to yourself. It’s an enticing proposition, inviting you to take the plunge and explore as much as you can fill up on from options across rosticceria (Sicilian hot ciccheti), antipastini (cold ciccheti with bread) and imported cured meats. Alas, only the
prices might stay your greedy hand, as for nearly £8 a pop these appetisers ask a lot.
Of course it had to be a classic Tiramisu. Yes it’s a cliché, but then again every Italian restaurant like Barbaracca should
A reminder of just how happy a bowl of quality pasta and a few choice ingredients can make me Thankfully, they deliver in tasty spades. A salad of marinated swordfish brought leaves of luscious fish and ribbons of translucent fennel, deftly, delicately pickled with the acid pop of capers for a sharp lift. An octopus and potato salad offered some devilishly moreish mollusc tumbled in strands of pickled carrot, fennel and onion.
surely live or die on the quality of their take on that coffee drenched, spongy pud? And theirs didn’t let me down at all, arriving as a perfect portion of lusciously layered cream and deep dark coffee and chocolate notes, with that cool freshness unique only to Tiramisu.
Golden fried risotto balls of tomato & pea arancini were more texture than flavour, and begged for a pungent aioli for dipping, but a pizzetta - a diddy pizza for one or two people - special topped with salty-sweet Sicilian sausage and friarelli (wild greens) and gooey pools of creamy mozzarella was lightspeed tasty and had me itching for more. Local pork from Shackleford found its way into a tender mains wrapped in seared pancetta, cooked to juicy perfection and stuffed with more of that Sicilian sausage goodness, all over fragrant, savoury lentils cooked in a glossy, flavoursome jus. This is the kind of rustic Italia on a plate that validates Barbaracca’s new approach perfectly, but a generous scattering of roast potatoes, carrot and kale leant the dish the character of a hearty British roast that only added to its charm. A pasta dish of rigatoni tumbled in earthy mushroom and sweet courgette and the tiniest of prawns sent me spinning into a blissful daze thanks to a silky rich cream sauce that sang cheerily with garlic. Not dainty, not refined, not fancy; just all kinds of delicious comfort and a reminder of just how happy a bowl of quality pasta and a few choice ingredients can make me. Vision swimming a little afterwards, we took a breath and braced for desserts.
Barbaracca’s rise from La Luna’s ashes has brought Godalming the friendly neighbourhood restaurant it’s always needed, offering simple, sunny and scintillating Italian dishes that everyone can enjoy. That it is also one of the warmest and cheeriest places to eat in the town is a welcome bonus too, and so only time will tell if Godalming takes their local Italian to heart once more. Your move, Godalming.

SPORTS NEWS WHAT’S ON THIS MONTH Surrey Sports Park Squash Open 2015
Woking FC vs Tranmere Rovers
15th November 2015
24th November 2015 / The Laithwaite Community Stadium
Sunday’s usually a day of rest. It’s a day of slow-paced, lethargic movement that slowly eases you into a new week. How about something a little different come November 15th? How about something that’s the complete opposite? Guildford’s Surrey Sports Park plays host to the 2015 Adult Squash Open that will see players from all over the country come to compete at the sports park. From club team players to county standard, all levels are welcome for a modest fee of £20.00: a fee that includes two guaranteed matches plus a free Technifibre t-shirt.
The shaky, inconsistent Woking have returned again at the same point as last season. After an impressive start to the season that saw the Cards win five of their opening seven fixtures, Garry Hill’s men have begun to falter and drop points too easily. Woking’s decline mimics last season’s, but Hill will be keen to put things straight before the slump sees them slip too far away from possible promotion.
If you’re simply in it for the viewing, then it’s free to head down and watch a squash-packed day of, well, squash.
Woking host promotion favourites Tranmere Rovers at the Kingfield on, what will be a bitter Tuesday evening. But don’t let the weather put you off from heading down, because, after all, wrapping up warm, clutching a Bovril and seeing your own breath is all part of the non-league experience, right?

Guildford Predatorz Kickboxing Club During October, Guildford Predatorz Kickboxing club competed in the Bristol Open – a tournament that sees some of the most talented kickboxers from all over Europe congregate for one weekend of action. Spread over two days, Surrey’s Predatorz made a good account of themselves. Twelve-year-old Georgio Visoli, the previous week had won two gold medals and one silver at the Hands Down Interclub Tournament, but could only manage a first-round knockout to the eventual silver medallist this time round. Lizzie Bell partook in the +60kg Intermediate Continuous winning gold, whilst Mary Hatton also bagged herself a medal in the -60kg Intermediates achieving a silver. Chief instructor, Alex Kennedy, was fighting in the -84kg Continuous Division. Having taken gold some years ago, plus a silver medal last year, Kennedy was keen to keep up his winning Bristol streak and kept it up he did as he claimed gold with an impressive final win following some well-fought points. So all-in-all an excellent two days of competing with some great results and fantastic performances. Next week they'll attempt to keep the ball rolling at the Cimac Superleague in Dorking, with hopes of coming back with plenty more medals! Surrey’s Jake Ball, however, is a downto-earth boxer. This isn’t because he’s only recently turned professional – it’s not a sign of inexperience – but because he’s a genuinely sound guy, something of a rarity in the sport. BUSINESS News NEW SPEEDY ELECTRIC CHARGER AT VINES OF GUILDFORD SMART initiative. The others are located at Reigate Hill car park, Hollyhedge car park, Cobham, and Frimley Park Hospital (two) as part of a network of almost 20 across West Sussex, East Sussex – including Brighton – and Kent. There were 682 ‘plug-in’ vehicles registered in Surrey in March 2015 compared to 248 a year earlier, according to Department for Transport statistics. The only county with more is Hampshire with 699.
As electric car demand accelerates in Surrey, the BMW showroom and garage offer yet another piece of revolutionary technology – the ability to fully charge an electric car in half an hour… At the end of September, Surrey County Council deputy Leader Peter Martin unveiled a new speedy charging point as it was revealed that Surrey has more electric vehicles than almost every county in the country.
It has been installed at BMW dealership Vines of Guildford and means vehicles can recharge in less than 30 minutes, instead of between three and eight hours it normally takes to top up – a huge improvement that could potentially blow up the potential market for the electric car. The new publicly accessible rapid charger brings the total installed in Surrey to five as part of the council’s aim of promoting green travel schemes through the Travel
The news comes after the council hosted a summit last year designed to spark extra growth in electric vehicles that featured companies at the industry’s cutting edge, including Surrey-based Mercedes-Benz and McLaren. Mr Martin said: “It’s fantastic that businesses and drivers in Surrey are accelerating demand for ‘plug-in’ electric cars so this innovative industry continues to boost our economy and the environment.” Find out more about this important advancement, visit vinesofguildfordbmw.co.uk
SURREY COUNTY COUNCIL BACKS CROSSRAIL 2 Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member Mike Goodman has declared that Crossrail 2 is vital for a train network “unable to cope” with rising passenger demand. The event, which also featured Boris Johnson’s Crossrail 2 advisor Daniel Moylan and managing director Michele Dix, was informed that more than 130,000 Surrey residents commute to the capital every day, with thousands going in the other direction. As a result, four Surrey train services are among the most overcrowded in England and Wales, including two of the top ten going from Woking to London Waterloo. Mike expressed his belief that the much-discussed rail route - still in its proposition phase but with the potential to alleviate severe overcrowding that occurs on commuter rail routes by the 2030s – would benefit Surrey residents who commute into the capital.

EDGE CASE GAMES IN GUILDFORD Guildford is well known as a town with an exceptional gaming calibre; some of the biggest names in the world are based there. The small but rapidlygrowing team at Edge Case Games are a relatively new name, but they’re aiming to make a splash with their next project. ECG are working hard on the exciting and somewhat unorthodox concept of fully open development. They are creating a space-based sci-fi multiplayer title called ‘Fractured Space’,
and have taken the rather unusual approach of throwing open the doors to the public, giving a glimpse behind the curtain at how games are made. This is a growing trend, and Edge Case Games are at the forefront. With the aim of enthusing aspiring developers and offering an original prospective on the creative process, ECG are providing a worthy cause. Kudos, guys and girls. Find out more at edgecasegames.net

THE RACE TO 5G by Rich Lee
T
he 5G Innovation Centre at the University of Surrey is the cuttingedge headquarters for the UK’s most exciting academic research project, and the leader of the pack when it comes to the global race for 5G. It’s here that the next generation of mobile and wireless technology is being birthed. And it could just change the world… There are a lot of remarkable things about the 5GIC: the presence of the biggest heavyweights in global telecoms as partners, the bleeding-edge hardware being evolved at the site and the intellectual firepower of 170 researchers dispersed over the building’s four floors, to name just a few. But it’s the speed with which the project has taken flight that’s especially significant. When the last leap in mobile telecommunications, 4G, made its UK debut in 2012, the University’s Head of the Institute for Communication Systems Rahim Tafazolli was already calling for the development of 5G and a radically different technology
to provide unprecedented levels of capacity and speed, one that was more energy-efficient and more cost-effective than anything that had gone before. At the same time the Government put out the call for projects between universities and industries, requiring a minimum of £30million investment of which two thirds had to come from industry. Thanks to the University of Surrey’s academic credibility and Tafazolli’s vision and connections to industry, they won the bid and the race for 5G truly began. Keith Robson, the Chief Operating Officer at 5GIC, has shepherded the enterprise since the beginning, bringing his expertise with industry to bear and inviting the biggest players in telecoms to get on board, raising investment in the project to nearly £75million. “There was huge excitement from day one,” he tells me. “There are very few people playing this game. It took a year to get the partners signed up and just eighteen months to build the building.” The 5GIC’s members now include Vodafone, Huawei, EE, BBC, BT, Samsung and Fujitsu among many others, all collaborating to make 5G the revolution in telecommunications it’s promised to be. The centre was officially opened in September alongside a fully-functioning advanced 4G network across the campus, providing researchers with scope to upgrade to fully-fledged 5G technologies. By 2018 the testbed will be able to deliver 10Gbs/per cell, ten times faster than the highest speed available over 4G.
BUSINESS
TheGuide2Surrey.com/Business
Communication at Near the Speed of Light When we think of the performance of network communications we most commonly think of Speed: how fast we can download data and upload it. Researchers at 5GIC have already developed a technology that enables speeds of one terabit per second (Tbps) - more than 1,000 times faster than the highest 4G speed, and filed over 15 patents. But, curiously, that’s not really the ultimate prize. The Holy Grail for 5G communications is Latency, namely the delay between sending a signal and receiving it. Measured in milliseconds, it takes light approximately 1m/s to travel 300 kilometres. 5G aims to reduce latency to just 1m/s and even below. Whichever way you spin it, that’s super-fast and will allow for truly realtime control and sensitivity over a network. But control of what?
As impressive as technology like 4G and fibre broadband is, when it comes to pure bandwidth the digital landscape inhabited by humans and machines just isn’t big enough for the both of us. With the commercial value of the Internet of Things estimated to reach £11trillion by 2025, we’re going to need a bigger, better network capable of handling unthinkable loads and all in realtime. In other words, we’re going to need 5G. The potential uses for the technology are only as limited as our collective imagination. Ultra high definition movies downloaded in the blink of an eye, autonomous vehicles controlled in realtime from anywhere in the world, and even the use of remote robots in surgeries or disaster zones; 5G will achieve those things and more without even breaking a sweat. After that it’s up to innovation by businesses, both big and small, and individuals to capitalise on the breathtaking power promised by the tech.
A Beacon for Industry The Internet of Things It’s easy to assume that the internet is primarily skewed towards human-to-human communication. We send messages to family, friends and colleagues via our phones over mobile broadband, consume content on websites that somebody else has created and interact over apps and games. But behind the deafening digital chatter of people is the far larger, and arguably more crucial, binary babble of machines talking to machines from all over the world. This is the Internet of Things, of computers and electronic components sending signals between themselves via instructions, either instigated by human operators or algorithms buried in deep torrents of code.
Outside of the technology and its potential, it would be hard to overstate what the 5GIC could mean for business in the UK, much less Surrey and its place as the de facto Silicon Valley of Great Britain. Its membership and scope may be international, but Keith Robson hopes that the project will draw aspiring startups and high growth companies to take advantage of the research and supply chain surrounding 5GIC and around Guildford. He readily admits: “This is a prestige project, a beacon to say that the UK is setting its stall out to be world leaders in this innovative new technology. And it’s all happening in Guildford.” That technology is set to make its full debut to the world in 2020, bringing unprecedented levels of connectivity to consumers and businesses and changing the landscape of communications for the century ahead.

Surrey in
space By Joe Payne THREE YEARS AGO THIS MONTH, WHILE THIS MAGAZINE WAS MERELY A TWINKLE IN OUR LOFTIER HIGHER-UPS RESPECTIVE EYES, WE FEATURED AN ARTICLE ON THE GUIDE 2 SURREY WEBSITE ABOUT THE MAGNIFICENT SURREY SPACE CENTRE AND ITS TECHNOLOGY. Just to be clear, we don’t mean exploration in the sense of Gagarin, Armstrong and James T Kirk – we mean a far more practical application of space technology, with a strategy to “…underpin the technical development of the space industry through its advanced research programmes.” And it’s one of the leading centres of its kind in Europe; certainly an impressive feat for what began as a small start-up in a laboratory. Back in the first quarter of 2013, we followed up with a piece about SSC’s
successful launch of The World’s First Smartphone in Space, The STRaND-1. A tech marvel completed in remarkably short time, this Android phone (a Google Nexus One, to be precise) that is circumnavigating the globe. As I type this, it’s hovering over the East Siberian Sea. In the subsequent two-and-a-halfyears, Surrey Space Centre and Sister Company, satellite manufacturers Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL), have continued to be at the forefront of British space technology. So in this special techy section of The Guide 2 Surrey, let’s summarise some of our favourite endeavours of the past couple of years… In 2014, the team announced that they are working on a four-year project called ‘Reconfigurable Autonomy’, aiming to help remove space debris and monitor spacecraft – without the potential dangers of using humans. Using autonomous technology, intelligent robotic systems are being created to inspect, monitor and identify when spacecraft needs repairing. These systems will also have the potential to support astronauts on space missions, and to deal with space debris.
Moreover, last year also saw Surrey’s Electronics & Amateur Radio Society (the brilliant acronym EARS) successfully build and launched a highaltitude balloon into the sky. The balloon contained a flight computer with GPS tracking, temperature and pressure sensors, as well as a live radio telemetry link, camera and satellite tracker. The University of Surrey mascot, Steve the Stag, was also attached to the balloon. Reaching heights of up to 100,000 feet, the balloon eventually burst, and parachuted back down to a landing spot in Basildon, Essex. There’s more balloon-based technological marvels a little further on too. It’s perhaps no surprise then that in 2014 Professor Sir Martin Sweeting, Chair of Surrey Space Centre and founder of SSTL picked up a prize at COSPAR 2014’s Scientific Assembly, hosted by the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, and was identified by The Sunday Times as one of the UK’s 20 most influential engineers. More recently, on Friday 10th July at 17:27 UK time, DeOrbitSail was launched by the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle from SDSC SHAR, India. The satellite was part of five UK satellites launched

into orbit, including imaging satellites manufactured by SSTL. You can see what the results were like on the separate column on this page. A matter of weeks ago, Surrey Space Centre experiment to measure radiation levels high in the stratosphere was successfully carried aloft to an altitude of 125,000ft (38km) over the weekend 25th and 26th September of this year as part of the NASA Rad-X stratospheric balloon payload. This is more than three times higher than commercial flight altitudes, and twice the cruising altitude of Concorde. SSC has been funded by NASA to participate in this mission. The balloon was launched from the NASA Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility, New Mexico, USA, and spent about 24 hours afloat taking measurements. The payload remained at 125,000 feet for about eight hours and then it descended to about 80,000ft for the remainder of the time to collect data at different altitudes. The payload has now been safely recovered from the New Mexico desert by NASA teams and data analysis is in the pipeline. The Rad-X mission aims to obtain crucial additional data in essence to determine whether future aircraft engineers are able to design aircraft to fly significantly higher than they do currently. This is, in the briefest way possible, a nutshell surmising of all that SSC and SSTL have achieved in the past two years; it’s a staggering array in a short period of time. Sadly the nature of the beast means that future projects cannot be revealed; but it’s fair to say that more astonishing technological achievements are in the pipeline – and all of this is happening right on your doorstep…
1-Metre High Resolution Satellite Imagery We thought it best to give you a little flavour of the latest project that Surrey Space Centre have embarked upon. This, their latest piece of news (at the time of going to print), is yet another brilliant advancement coming from their headquarters at the University of Surrey campus in Guildford. The first imagery has been released from Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd’s DMC3/TripleSat Constellation satellite, with the imagery showing features on earth up to 1 meter in resolution. Yes you did read that correctly… The three satellites see the Earth in a range of visible and infrared wavelengths. They fly as a train around the globe, with a separation between each platform of 33 minutes and from their altitude of 651km, the satellites can trace surface features down to one metre in a panchromatic mode (back and white), and four metres in a multispectral (colour) mode. The swath covered by an image is 24km. The Satellites were launched alongside the Surrey Space Centre’s demonstrator satellite Deorbitsail back in July of this year. The time on the satellites has been leased to 21st Century Aerospace Technology Ltd of Beijing and the data will help with urban planning, working out crop yields, pollution monitoring and doing biodiversity assessments, among many other applications. The new constellation is the most capable yet to come out of SSTL; and as you can see from those images, that’s rather capable indeed…

TECHNOLOGY: VINES BMW GUILDFORD
Released in October, the BMW 7 Series is yet another technological marvel in the manufacturer’s arsenal. And this model will of course be available at the ever-brilliant Vines of Guildford… Hugely acclaimed for its high-tech brilliance and unparalleled luxury, the new 7 series promises to be yet another win for BMW. Having written previously about the electric i3 and i8 (the latter of which won UK Performance Car of the Year 2015 and is probably the best high-end green car of all time), this time it’s the turn of a revamped classic. And while the focus on here may well be luxury, there is still technology in abundance… Firstly, we’ve got to shout to you about Remote Control Parking – a world first. Now you may be familiar with cars that can reverse park themselves, but the 7 series goes one better. Using the ludicrously cool BMW Display Key you can now park the car without even being inside. Naturally, all the fancy sensors will ensure it’s parked to perfection. Also, there’s the new iDrive system to keep up the luxury feel that’s become synonymous with this car. Basically,
there’s a three-dimensional sensor mounted within the headlining to detect hand movements that are used to control functions, including the volume of the audio system as well as answering or rejecting calls. Which is very cool. Four-zone climate control is standard across the range, and there’s also wireless phone charging, active massaging seats and Wi-Fi browsing too. So there’s no shortage of creature comforts… This is all merely scratching the surface of the features available in the 7 series, but what about the actually important stuff? It’s fair to say that even the large, comfort-driven saloons of today are greener. These new models are no exception, with a massive weight loss from its predecessor a notable change. Moreover, the economy and CO2 figures in the 730d (for example) are staggering, bettering the old model by 12.4mpg and 29g/km respectively – with absolutely no effect on those impressive performance stats.
PRICE: From £64,530
ACCELERATION: 0 – 62mph: 5.6 – 6.2 seconds
ECONOMY: 54.3 – 58.9 MPG (diesel), 40.4 – 41.5 MPG (petrol)
So while the i3 and i8 are examples of the new car revolution, the 7 series has gone about an evolution in keeping with what a luxury automobile should offer in 2015. Increased economy, incredible features and peerless comfort, with a performance that has not been compromised. What more could you wish for?
GENIUSES AT WORK The level of technology at Vines BMW is astonishing. With their new charger that will fill up an electric car in 30 minutes – not to mention all the innovations of the cars themselves – it’s a dizzying acceleration of advancement. You might think that, with that level of high-tech gadgetry, you’d need a genius. Thankfully, that’s exactly what Vines have… Francesca DeCozar is Vines’ most

THE GENTLEMAN’S AGREEMENT: PART II Contracts and Contractual Disputes (Gentlemen’s Agreements Part II) We touched on the area of Gentlemen’s Agreements back in the Summer. That article attracted an unexpected number of questions, some of which asked for further clarification on the whole area. We are happy to oblige. One of our own lawyers recently darkly muttered, “I wouldn’t enter into a Gentlemen’s Agreement with my own father!” whilst reminiscing about attempting to write up terms for payment in exchange for offering to clean his car as a child (we will look at a desire for clarity in drafting contracts shortly!). All jokes aside, the so called Gentleman’s Agreement still exists, despite all the case law suggesting the fallibility of such arrangements and is a common factor in disputes between businesses, their suppliers and their customers.
So what is a Gentlemen’s Agreement? To recap, more often than not a Gentlemen’s Agreement will be a verbal agreement, whereby terms of a contract are agreed orally. Although oral agreements are enforceable and valid (contracts do not need to be in writing), where a dispute arises between parties to an agreement, the absence of written terms can be problematic.
Disputes are inevitable As one of the individuals who contacted us correctly pointed out, disputes can arise whatever agreement is in place. A contract, whether written or made orally, is rarely safe from the potential of parties disputing its terms and one party’s obligations to another. However, it is generally easier to determine where a party stands when
the terms of an agreement are set out in writing and further, drafted clearly. You have to ask yourself whether, if say a judge, an arbitrator or a mediator were required to intervene with your dispute, you would feel more confident relying on written evidence on the table, or your word against that of another.
You should also consider the damage which a dispute may cause to business relationships and the goodwill of your business. Written agreements do not have to be long and complicated and do not have to take long to prepare. A little spent now can prevent a lot spent later.
Of course, a written agreement does not always present the full story and parties may vary the terms of an agreement as matters progress. It is important to ensure records are retained of agreed variations and supporting correspondence (again…in writing!).
If a dispute needs resolving
Risk Management It is always sensible to seek advice when looking to draft terms for or enter into an agreement. Drafting clear and effective terms will often allow disputes, if they arise, to be resolved before they escalate. Gentleman’s agreements will inevitably not cover all aspects of a deal and disputes often arise from issues which are not contemplated at the outset– hindsight is a wonderful thing…but it won’t get you your money back! An experienced legal advisor will help you to fill the gaps and incorporate safety provisions after contemplating potential future risks. Costs of litigation when attempting to resolve a dispute can be high and in cases have the potential to escalate beyond the value of the goods or services on which the contract is based. Disputes can be very time consuming and can be disruptive to your dayto-day running of a business. Trying to pull together evidence to support the oral terms of a Gentlemen’s Agreement can take away time better spent sourcing new customers and / or suppliers.
You should consider seeking advice from a skilled dispute resolution legal advisor if a dispute arises. Don’t wait for the situation to deteriorate. Early intervention to ensure that the dispute is managed appropriately to reduce costs and save relations where possible is recommended. Such legal advisors can advise on your position and likelihood of success in pursuing the dispute, correspond with the third party or their representatives on your behalf and negotiate for mediation or a settlement (of course a written settlement agreement is advised!).
