Welcome to October! Cometh the month of Autumnal abundance and the countdown to the word that begins with C, concludes with the letter S and is often synonymous with giving, receiving, eating and the rest…ahem…but alas, there is much to do, much to see and much to digest until then my friends. Tis the month of harvest after all; the month that our tiny island of greatness bears much of its amazing produce - check out our pages on what is available to you, the humble vegetable picker, fan of foraging… Aside from the usual exploratory excursions that we love to bestow and will upon you, we also have the full run down of expected dates for your diary; the year on year parties that never tire from their tradition. Guildford Book Festival returns to the market town of the Golden Ford for a weeks’ worth of written word, straight from the horses’ mouth, whilst the latter stages of the month herald the hauntingly inspired themes of Halloween. As the lights from the pumpkins faces fade into the night, we move into the month of November with a, whizz and a bang as bonfires and fireworks illuminate the night’s sky in memory of that guy, Guy Fawkes. Did we mention that we talk to the don mega of weird comedy Noel Fielding as well as charmer of all things deadly creature speaking, Steve Backshall? No? Okay, well they feature in the following pages too! Amazing! Enter, enjoy and tell your friends that you’ve just picked up possibly the best local publication you’ve ever encountered! Yours Sincerely, Mr D’Arcy

Your Community News TEA AND TALK

FOR WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY

A comfy sofa, a supportive friend and nice hot cuppa. Everyone knows how beneficial a good cup of tea and chat can be. Tea & Talk gives you the opportunity to look after your own mental health and wellbeing whilst raising much needed funds for the Foundation. You are invited to hold a Tea & Talk party on or around Wednesday 10th October to mark World Mental Health Day.

All you have to do is get a group of friends, family or colleagues together, make a cuppa, get them talking and ask them to make a donation! If the idea of structure is more up your street, then join the fantastic Oakleaf Enterprise, (Surrey’s very own mental health charity, who exist and work to support those less fortunate to reintegrate themselves into everyday life and work), are holding a Yogathon.

4 hours of yoga, made up of hour-long classes taught by experienced local teachers. To sign up and to read more information about the Yogathon, visit oakleaf-enterprise.org. What are you waiting for? Let’s help support better mental health in the community. The brain is pretty important you know. Visit mentalhealth.org.uk

LEITH HILL NEEDS YOU!

Trust volunteers and any necessary equipment and training will be provided. The work period will be 9.30am to 3pm but do let them know if you can only do a short stint. Stout footwear is recommended and suitable clothing for doing rough work outdoors in October. Tough gardening gloves are strongly recommended too. Any additional requirements will be sent out once you have confirmed your sign up along with your confirmation of booking.

The Surrey Hills Society have been invited to take part in a volunteer group carrying out scrub clearance in the area close to Leith Hill Tower. But this isn’t just any old working party! This year marks the 250th anniversary of the construction of Leith Hill Tower and as part of the celebrations, for this year only, the Coldharbour bonfire

night activities have been moved to the top of Leith Hill. The scrub clearance is a key part of the preparation for this event – with the cleared material then becoming part of the bonfire to be built there. The Society’s members and friends will be working alongside National

There is no charge for this event, however, booking is essential so that the organisers know who is intending to take part. Make friends, help your community! For more info visit surreyhills.org

‘LET’S GIVE THE LINK ROAD SOME MORE THOUGHT’ SAY RESIDENTS OF JACOBS WELL

STOPTOBER

Residents of Jacob’s Well and Clay Lane are concerned with the initial proposal to build a new road that will link Clay Lane to Slyfield Industrial Estate, in a bid to help ease congestion on the Woking Road (currently the only entrance into Slyfield). The floodplains, south of Jacob’s Well are nominated floodplains that not only support Jacob’s Well but also stops Guildford from getting flooded. In the winter they are often underwater and that’s what floodplains are for – to stop flooding! Sounds obvious, we know.

It’s that time of year again people. Habitual creatures of the cigarette smoking variety are urged to quit the stick and clean the bloodstream free from all its accumulative nicotine and toxins.

The plan is to put a road that comes off Clay Lane, close to Jacob’s Well which will go across the floodplains behind Jacobs Well and into Slyfield Industrial Estate. This will mean that the 7 tonne limit on Clay Lane will be lifted meaning HGV’s will be travelling along the road, potentially impacting the environment and wildlife that surrounds it. Local resident Steve Knight told us, “it’s about the environment, it’s the green belt, another slice of the green belt that is going to be taken away. The residents have a petition, which has an objective of 500 signatures, which in turn would mean that Guildford Borough Council would need to discuss it. We’re not stupid, we know we need to improve access to Slyfield but all we’re saying is let’s just think of the environment, let’s think of another route. There are metalled roads that run from the Woking Road depot, why not think about that as a route? The residents just want some more thought given to the idea”. For more information on the proposed Clay Lane link road visit guildford.gov.uk and to show your support for the Jacobs Well Residents Association visit jwra.org

And no, we’re not just going to suggest an alternative in the form of vaping; let’s use that mental will power that we all have deep inside and stop. Stop it now. The NHS have some super ideas to help you out, including ideas about how to use the hand that you have just freed from the clutches of doom. Breathe better, live better! Your Community News £5 MILLION DONATED TO SURREY COMMUNITIES The Community Foundation for Surrey is celebrating £5 million in grant awards to over 1,800 local voluntary groups, community projects, and individuals across Surrey since establishing in 2005. Over the past 10 years the Foundation has inspired Surrey families, businesses, trusts and individuals to come together and invest in their local communities now and for generations to come. Grants have supported projects across the width of community need. In the last year alone over £820,000 was awarded through grants to local communities across the county; and this year we aim to award more than £1million. David Frank, the Community Foundation’s Chairman said ‘This is a fantastic milestone for the Community Foundation and clearly demonstrates that philanthropy is alive and well in the county. We would like to thank all our donors for their continuing support, generosity and desire to help projects across Surrey who are making such a difference to people’s lives.’

A grant of £4,000 to Camberley Besom pushed the total grants awarded over the £5 million mark. Camberley Besom is volunteer-run community group working to provide a bridge between those who want to give time, money, skills or items, and those in need of support within the local community. The Besom acts quickly to provide people who have been urgently re-housed due to domestic abuse, release from prison, homelessness, or other crises with ‘Starter Packs’ of bedding and towels, kitchen and dining equipment, supplies for new mums, small electrical items and food. This recent grant has supported the group’s warehouse rental costs enabling the project to continue increasing awareness of their work and continue supporting local people in need of help. Grace Bates, Project Lead explains “Without funding for the costs of renting their premises, which is our biggest expense, we would most likely be unable to continue as a group.”

Other recent grant awards include: £9,000 to Elmbridge Community Link supported sport and exercise sessions for young people with learning disabilities. £4,000 to Age UK Runnymede and Spelthorne is funding their Support 4 You project addressing social isolation of older people. £6,000 to Action for Carers is supporting summer holiday activity days for young carers. Wendy Varcoe, Executive Director of the Community Foundation said ‘This is about local people supporting other local people. The Foundation has continued to build year on year and we have ambitious plans to help even more of Surrey’s communities going forward.’ Visit the fantastic surreycommunityfoundation.org.uk for more information

GUILDFORD’S FIREWORK FIESTA IS SAVED The Fireworks Fiesta in Guildford will be going ahead after a donation of £3,000 has been made by an anonymous donor who lives locally and regularly attends the event in Guildford The resident, who enjoys the fireworks, wants to help ensure this ma jor community event goes ahead. Mike Girling, a member of Guildford Lions Club and the event organiser, said “We are most grateful for this donation which together with some financial help from Guildford Borough Council will help meet the financial shortfall we had.”

“We still have some loose ends to tie up with the security company who will be assisting with the organisation, after the withdrawal of Surrey Police, but it is now all systems go.” Although it costs £20,000 to stage the event the fireworks are free to attend and official Guildford Lions collectors will be present and ask that donations be given to help meet the cost of the fireworks and also boost their funds for charitable work. The Fireworks Fiesta is held on the traditional date of the 5th November in Guildford, with a torchlight procession from the towns High Street to the firework finale in Stoke Park.

SURREY SEARCH & RESCUE:

HOW YOU CAN HELP

As you may well be aware, we at The Guide 2 have been covering Surrey Search and Rescue as our designated Charity for 2015. We’ve looked at what they do, who they help and just how important they are. But the one thing we haven’t yet told you, reader, is how you can help. So here’s a little guide giving you, the good people of Surrey and the surrounding areas, a chance to be a part of the good work they do… Surrey Search and Rescue is entirely staffed by volunteers and relies completely on donations in order to procure equipment and run. d Rescue in fu

Business Owners: If you are a local business owner, you will know the important part you play in the local economy, as well as how important it is for your business to give back to the community. You can help by

opting to have a team sponsored activity (Bob from accounts could jump out of a plane for charity), or your staff could contact Surrey Search and Rescue and volunteer their time to hide for Search Dog training. It could even be as simple as having a collection tin on your counter. It all adds up…

Event Managers: It is important to remember that Surrey Search and Rescue are professionals and their array of expertise is for hire. If you’re looking for First Aid cover at an event or looking for Marshals then SurSAR can help out. Their water team regularly provides safety cover for water events, so be sure to contact them and see how they can help. Speaking of the water team, if you have an office by a large body of water, you can get the team to come in and provide training with rescue equipment such as throw lines. This provides great peace of mind; with staff spending lunch breaks by the rivers and lakes that are by work places around the county.

Schools: Helping kids understand the dangers of water and remote areas gives them the tools to use those areas safely. The team is always happy to talk to future generations of Search Technicians about the exciting and rewarding work they do.

Rescue and Outdoor Equipment Companies: Want your product tested to the max? Why not contact the team to see how you can help each other with developing new products, testing and fielding them.

And Finally Dog Owners: The time it takes to train a search dog is not as long as you think; but we all know that a dog’s working life is sadly not as long as ours. The team are always looking for new Search Dogs and owners to join their K9 team. The dogs don’t have to be specially bred, they just need a playful nature and a real urge to have fun! The team’s dogs are some of the best dogs in the country but to the dog, it’s all a game; all for a ball…

Here at The Guide 2, we believe in action! It’s all well and good raising awareness through the written word, but we are also staunchly passionate about raising the necessary funds, to keep charities such as Surrey Search and Rescue in full swing, in order for them to continue to save lives. We have positioned 100 fund raising collection boxes into business’s that we work with and where this ‘ere publication is distributed from, so if you see one on your travels, then be sure to dig deep into one’s pockets and contribute to this amazing cause.

Talking To... Terry Waite Terry Waite’s captivity at the hands of jihadists in Lebanon, from 1987 until 1991, saw him endure over four of those years in solitary confinement, torture and a mock execution. But his indomitable spirit sustained him until his release and resulted in his bestseller, Taken on Trust. In the time since, Waite has written three more books and worked tirelessly for charities like Hostage UK and Emmaus on behalf of the homeless. This year Terry Waite visits the Guildford Book Festival with his first novel, The Voyage of the Golden Handshake, a comedy set on the high seas in the screwball world of cruise ships… YOUR WRITING CAREER ARGUABLY BEGAN DURING YOUR DAYS AS A HOSTAGE, EVEN THOUGH YOU WERE DEPRIVED OF BOOKS OR EVEN PAPER AND PENCIL. HOW DID YOU COPE WITHOUT THAT VITAL STIMULATION? I was in solitary confinement for four and a half years. And when you’re in that sort of situation you find that your body begins to deteriorate, you lose muscle tone and so on. And the way to combat that is to keep your mind alive and develop an active imagination. And so I began to write in my head. The first book, Taken on Trust, was written in my head. I only had pencil and paper twice. Once was during a mock execution and I had to write a letter to my family.

WAS WRITING A FICTIONAL COMEDY A CONSCIENTIOUS DECISION TO MOVE BEYOND THE MORE HARROWING EXPERIENCES THAT YOU’VE WRITTEN ABOUT BEFORE? Well I suppose so, although I didn’t consciously think that. I didn’t always want to be writing about the hostage experience. I deal with that still, with Hostage UK. But I felt that it’s very easy to lose one’s sense of humour these days, when you open the paper and read depressing stories. It’s important to be able to laugh; if you’re robbed of laughter you’re robbed of something very precious. Much modern humour doesn’t make me

laugh however so I wondered, what does make me laugh? It’s good old fashioned British humour. And I wrote this book principally for my own pleasure.

TO WHAT EXTENT IS THE BOOK INSPIRED BY WRITERS AND GENRES THAT YOU’RE PERSONALLY FOND OF? Tom Sharpe might be one writer, but I would say I was more inspired by the old Carry On films. This book isn’t as saucy as those films, but they were very funny and ridiculous.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT CRUISE SHIPS AND THE PEOPLE THAT SAIL ON THEM THAT MAKE THEM SUCH A RIPE TARGET FOR YOUR NOVEL? Cruise ships are a microcosm of real life. I’ve been lecturing on small cruise ships for over thirty years so I know that world well. And I thought to locate a comedy on a ship, where characters are thrown together in unusual circumstances, would be a great setting. We’re all funny in our own ways, and in writing comedy you take real situations and you lift them one inch above reality. And cruise ships are a microcosm of real life.

SOME READERS ON AMAZON HAVE SAID THEY WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE BOOK TELEVISED AS A SITCOM. WOULD THAT APPEAL TO YOU? It would make a good sitcom! The book naturally falls into little episodes. And I’ve

also written the sequel, because in this trip I get these people out to the other side of the world where they’re stranded. And the next book brings them home again with another sequence of incredible adventures.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT SPEAKING AT BOOK FESTIVALS? Actually I’ve been very surprised so far. We had a sell-out at the Edinburgh festival and the at Hay festival. So we’ve had very good reaction and I’ve really enjoyed that. I haven’t only spoken about the book at the festivals, I’ve also spoken about some of the issues going on in the world.

YOU’RE INCREDIBLY WELLTRAVELLED. IS THERE ANY COUNTRY THAT YOU HAVEN’T VISITED? Let me think. Where haven’t I been? I’ve not been to North Korea… and I don’t think I want to! For the full interview visit theguide2surrey.com/entertainment

Talking to… Noel Fielding

ENTERTAINMENT

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment

One half of the of the wildly successful Might Boosh comedy duo, Noel Fielding is bringing his latest tour to Woking’s New Victoria Theatre on 29th November. We caught up with the star of Nevermind the Buzzcocks and Luxury Comedy to learn more about his crazy live show, his rock and roll past and posh hammers… This tour is called ‘An Evening With…’ a very grown up, sensible title for a very alternative kind of comedian isn’t it? Yeah, well I thought it was a slightly ironic and old fashioned title. But to be honest, when you say you’re doing a tour at that point you haven’t even started writing the show, so what do you call it? Pick something quite vague and generic. It’s the sort of thing Barry Humphries would call it. In fact, when we were in Australia we played Adelaide and we went down to this weird dressing room with loads of showbusiness posters from the sixties

Boosh got really big, you could go to a party every night and get offered free things, drinks, parties, hanging out with really cool people you’ve only seen on TV, and you think this is amazing, it’s like my birthday every day! But after a year or so, you start to get a bit bored of it all. But I think for me, and Julian, the work was always the thing. Once the work was getting affected, it was time to pull out.

Any regrets? The only regret on the work front was that we didn’t hold the Boosh together. I wish that after the O2 we’d had a year or two off, recharged our batteries and

guests a bit, prepare a little and really kind of improvise. It was like a crazy tea party. So I was gutted when it went, but I have had a hell of a lot of offers since then. I’d love to do another panel show - I’m like a footballer on loan!

What projects do you have after the tour? Well, lots of stuff in the pipeline but I kind of really need to decide for myself. I’ve got an idea for a film, a TV show, there’s some ideas in America, something to do with my painting and a few ideas for children’s books so

I loved doing the Buzzcocks. It was like a crazy tea party! and seventies. And all of them - Bill Cosby, Dudley Moore, Spike Milligan at some point had called their tours ‘an evening with’. Maybe then it didn’t sound so old fashioned but we were p*ssing ourselves.

come back and write a film. But at that point we’d been doing it for so long, and working so hard we just needed a break which turned into a massive break and we went off to do other things.

So how’s this tour been for you so far?

Fans won’t truly let go until there’s a Mighty Boosh movie. Is that ever likely?

We did the whole English tour and this is like an extra bunch of dates for places we never managed to get to go the first time. The show sort of works now and it’s up and running. It has standup in it, sketches, music, animation and improvisation; it’s quite a big, two hour extravaganza. So once you get it right you might as well keep going as long as you can!

Back at the height of the Mighty Boosh, you’ve said things got pretty rock and roll for you. How does life compare now? I think you can only do that once, and thank God I got through it. It’s strange, when you first come to London it can be an amazingly full on place. When

Well it’s upsetting for us as well in as much as that was the first thing we (with Julian Barratt) wanted to do is write a film. But we ended up writing a live show and a script for a radio show. And then we won the Perrier Newcomer Award and we were kind of locked in. TV series, tours, festivals - the only thing we didn’t do was a film. I wish we had. It might still happen.

Are you missing Nevermind the Buzzcocks since it ended this year? I loved doing Buzzcocks. I get on so well with Phil Jupitus and the crew and the writers. I’ve never had a proper job so it was a really nice thing to do: you’d turn up in the afternoon, chat to the

yeah, I’ll have to decide. None of them might take off! But that’s the good thing about this job: you never know what will happen.

Finally, and this is for the hardcore Boosh-heads, what qualities would a hammer have to possess be to be considered ‘posh’? (Laughs) It is weird that, isn’t it? What was that from? The Story of Bubblegum Charlie wasn’t it? I think a posh hammer would have to have its own maze, or maybe its own moat surrounding its house. One big monocle, or a little tweed case that it sleeps in at night. I think it’s because in my head I never associated hammers with posh people. Like they’d never know what one was unless they were going to kill someone with one. For the full interview visit

TALKING TO… STEVE BACKSHALL One of Britain’s most popular naturalists, Steve Backshall comes to Guildford in October to talk about his experiences. Here we talk to Steve about growing up in Surrey, deadly animals and being dragged off by a blissfully ignorant shark… PHOTO CREDIT: ADAM WHITE

22

You’re coming to G Live on 30th October with ‘The Wild World Show’ – did you visit Guildford often growing up? Any fond memories?

Your novels ‘The Falcon Chronicles’ are inspired by your own real life experiences, which forms the basis of your show. How easily does the writing process come?

I did actually yeah – I used to go swimming at the Lido with friends, and cycling over the Hog’s Back a lot when I was younger. I even went to my very first nightclub in Guildford when I was in my teens… *after gentle nudging* I seem to remember it being called Cinderella’s? Does that ring any bells? (Ed. Readers of a certain age will certainly remember the glorious venue that was Cinderella’s…)

It depends – I do all my writing on the road, filming programmes. It can be very hard when you’re sat in the back of a car driving across Uganda or on a boat travelling to Antarctica, and trying to write. If it works, it’s great because it feels like you’re almost recording a film in your head.

You actually grew up in Bagshot, so this is something of a home-coming – but I understand your household wasn’t so typical and helped shape your love of animals? It certainly could not have been any less typical! I grew up on a smallholding, not far from where Pennyhill Park is now. My parents, despite having no experience in the field, got a whole bunch of rescue animals from goats to chickens and ducks to an asthmatic donkey and peacocks. We spent our childhood surrounding by these animals and the wildlife of the Surrey heaths.

If it’s not going well, it’s disastrous and there’s really nothing you can do, so it’s a very mixed experience. It’s easy in non-fiction work there’s no need for an enormous amount of creativity; fiction is different in that you have to be in the right frame of mind.

The Deadly 60 is a programme for young people in which you trekked across the globe to find the 60 “most deadly” animals in the world. Which was your favourite creature to source, either due to the animal itself or the location? I think it would probably be one of the very last ones we did which was filming leopard seals underneath the ice in

ENTERTAINMENT

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Entertainment

Antarctica. Firstly because I’d always wanted to go to there, and secondly because you’ve got this extraordinary animal, a huge predatory seal that could literally shake a penguin out of its skin, darting around, flashing her teeth at you underneath a jade green iceberg. It was one of the most surreal and extraordinarily powerful experiences I’ve ever had.

Did you ever feel in any real danger while filming the show?

Indeed you have said that “the more you learn about animals, the more convinced you are that almost all the fears we have about them are unfounded”. But do you have any animal phobias, however irrational? No. I think I’ve beaten all of those and I think a lot of that is down purely to experience; it’s really seeing that if you get into the water with what appears to be a shark feeding frenzy is actually extremely targeted on food and they will completely ignore you. I’ve been in the water with great white sharks and had them swim around me to get to food, deliberately – I’ve found that with almost every single animal I’ve worked with. I did have an intriguing moment hand-feeding sharks in the Bahamas – one took not just the fish but my hand itself and swam away with me! That was an experience. I was wearing chainmail underneath my wetsuit so I was fine, but it made for a great shot on the camera…

Finally as it’s Guildford Book Festival this month, what is your favourite book/ who is your favourite author? My favourite book is the Malay Archipelago by Alfred Russel Wallace, a contemporary of Darwin’s. It’s an extraordinary adventure yarn set in a part of the world that I now know very well, written back in a time when he was genuinely at risk of being eaten. In terms of author – can I say me…?!

Steve Backshall will be at Guildford’s G Live on the 30th October and embarking on his nationwide ‘Wild World’ theatre tour from 15 October – 15 November, where his books ‘The Falcon Chronicles’ and ‘Mountain’ will be available to buy. To book tickets please visit stevebackshall.com/tour.

There were certain moments where we felt we’d been lucky to come away unscathed, but far fewer than people would expect – the real lesson for me is that wild animals pose us so little threat and in most situations would far rather get away from us than attack us. So over the course of filming with pretty much every animal that people are frightened of around the world, there’s been remarkably little danger.

OCTOBER 2015

THE BIG BANG - NIGHTS Halloween and Bonfire Night – how’d this happen? It feels like we’ve only just finished munching on Easter eggs. Anyway, as October morphs into November we see the inevitable return of the multi-coloured whizz-bangs we all know and love. But where can we bear witness to these colourful displays, complete with bonfire and possibly a sparkler and a toffee apple? Here are a few of our recommendations across the local area… Ripley Bonfire 31st October / Ripley Green

Cranleigh Lions Bonfire and Firework Display

What to expect:

7th November / Village Centre

One of the biggest and best supported bonfire events in the South East. Taking place on the last Saturday of October, it attracts up to 15,000 people. As well as the bonfire and spectacular firework display there is an extensive funfair, food stalls, a bar which has a perfect view of said bonfire, and the fireworks come complete with live music. Naturally there’ll be fancy dress and torch procession too…

Find out more at ripleybonfire.co.uk

Hascombe Village Bonfire 6th November / Hascombe Village Hall What to expect: The evening kicks off with the children’s torch procession which lights up the bonfire. Then, grown-ups can enjoy the beer tent and mulled wine which promise to keep out the cold whilst you can all take full advantage of the toys and cakes tent. Great food and a warm friendly atmosphere promise to deliver another successful and fun filled evening, with great raffle prizes to be won and a spectacular fireworks display brings the evening to a perfect close.

Find out more at hascombe.com

Bramley Bonfire and Fireworks

What to expect: One of the most popular and well-attended fireworks displays in the area. Courtesy of those ever-charitable folks at the brilliant Cranleigh Lions club, the evening will always consist of a Make-a-Guy competition, torch-light procession, bonfire and firework display. There’s always plenty more in store so be sure to check out the Lions’ website for more info.

Visit cranleighlions.org for the latest updates

Brockham Bonfire 7th November / Brockham Village Green What to expect: A bustling gathering of people, as this little village East of Dorking gets a lot of visitors to the annual bonfire night. Another community affair that sees a lot of different contributors to make it work, Brockham Bonfire is a traditional family night of fun and celebration to raise funds for local societies, worthy causes and local charities. Just be sure to arrive in good time…

Find out more at brockhambonfire.com

31st October (TBC) / Bramley Field

Coldharbour Village Bonfire and Fireworks

What to expect:

6th November / Leith Hill Tower

A truly communal bonfire and fireworks display. Never cancelled due to poor weather, 2015’s event will naturally comprise of the key elements of a Guy Fawkes-event - a torchlit parade, raging bonfire, and spectacular fireworks. Food and drink will be in abundance and all proceeds cover the cost of the display. Plus it’s in lovely Bramley, so what more could you want?

Find out more at bramleybonfire.co.uk

What to expect: A fireworks display in a beautiful Surrey Hills village on the highest point in Southeast England? It cannot fail to be a wonderful evening of rockets and pyro. Parking and marshalling will be available in all the National Trust car-parks around the hill, and be sure to soak in some of that lovely NT countryside as well as gawping at the fireworks…

TO LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE!

Chiddingfold Bonfire 7th November / The Green

Farnham Fireworks Fiesta

What to expect:

7th November TBC / Farnham Centre

Another biggie, to use the parlance of the young. The Chiddingfold Bonfire is an association that holds a fireworks event and bonfire every year, and has done so for generations; indeed, it’s as much a tradition related to the history of the village as Mr Fawkes’ gunpowder plot itself. The bonfire raises money during the evening to pay for itself and to help the elderly residents of Chiddingfold. The event takes up the whole village and culminates in a wonderful display of colourful bangers, so be sure to come on down with your families to enjoy this special event.

Find out more at chiddingfoldbonfire.org.uk

Details are still sparse as this scribe furiously types, but you can expect this fabulous fireworks extravaganza to take place across Farnham on the 7th November. The Firework Fiesta, organised by Farnham’s Round Table, is a marvellous annual event for all the family. With a torchlit procession leaving the town centre for Farnham Park and an amazing firework display, all proceeds go to charity, so you can do you bit just by attending and bringing a couple of nuggets. Do it for Farnham!

QUENTIN BLAKE: Inside Stories The much-loved artist, best known for his works with Roald Dahl, has an exhibition at The Lightbox in Woking this October…

Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of reading some of Dahl’s classics (read: pretty much everyone with a childhood) will recognise the distinctive artwork of Sir Quentin Blake. The scratchy, ugly faces of ‘The Twits’ or the kindly, big-eared ‘BFG’; the loosely coloured ‘Matilda’ or the terrifying bald ‘Witches’ – all of these illustrations are intrinsically linked with the stories themselves. And now, Sir Quentin’s works are displayed at The Lightbox, in a way you’ve never seen them before… The exhibition features over 140 works and brings together first roughs and storyboards, many never shown before the ‘Inside Stories’ exhibition, with finished art work to demonstrate how ideas evolved, often in close collaboration with the authors. Curated by the artist himself, it will show how Blake brings to bear a wide range of different techniques and media including inks, watercolours and pastels applied with a variety of touch, in response to the particular mood of a book and the nature of its characters, to create his distinctive and unforgettable illustrations. Blake

introduces illustrations for his own books and collaborations with writers including Dahl, David Walliams and Michael Rosen. His candid personal commentary and extensive selection of works make ‘Quentin Blake: Inside Stories’ his most intimate and revealing exhibition to date. This is a wonderful opportunity to see these

works in far greater depth than ever before. Indulge in a wee bit of childhood nostalgia… ‘Quentin Blake: Inside Stories’ will be on show at The Lightbox from 10 October 2015 – 17 January 2016. Find out more by visiting thelightbox.org.uk.

RECIPES

Winter Rib Ragu & Mustard Mash By Fiona Knowlton It is the season of slow cooking and winter comfort food. This is one of those great meals that you can put on the hob and leave for a few hours without having to do anything. It’s also a great excuse to visit your local butcher as it’s the best place to buy your ribs from.

Ingredients 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

1 rack of pork ribs (ask your butcher to cut them into pieces) 3 tbsp. olive oil 4 carrots, chopped 1 onion, chopped 1 pint of stock (ideally a mix of beef and vegetable) 1 bag of good British mashing potatoes 2 tsp of mustard of your choice, but whole grain works really well.

Method 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Heat the oil in a large heavy based pan. Brown the ribs in the oil and then set aside.

Sauté the onions and carrots for around three minutes then add the ribs back to the pan. Add the stock and a bay leaf and reduce to a simmer. Cover and leave to simmer for two hours. 40 minutes before the end of cooking start your mash potato. Peel your potatoes and boil for between 25 and 40 minutes or until soft. Once drained mash them with a generous amount of butter and the mustard.

6.

When the ribs are done remove from the heat and remove the bones. Shred the meat and mix back into the sauce. Season with pepper if needed and serve.

7.

Voila! A hearty meal that warms the belly and soothes the soul; the perfect plate of food for cold nights.

WHERE TO EAT: The Four Horseshoes, Chobham

By Rich Lee We visit the revitalised country pub and dining room that’s fast becoming an essential destination for Surrey foodies… Arriving at the Four Horseshoes in Chobham, a country pub that’s seen awards, acclaim and punters flock like birds coming home to roost since its ma jor refurbishment back in 2013, you don’t expect to step into another world. That may seem like overstating things a little, but the pub we entered all but clobbers you (softly) with a wholly distinctive setting that wobbles happily between timeless, modern and all kinds of eclectic. On the surface the place is countrified almost to the point of caricature, but a streak of contemporary playfulness runs through the pub that had me exploring as if I were a kid in a museum. A hobbithole of nooks and cosy corners, bumpkin touches abound amid a subtle smattering of quirk. Bowler hats hang from antlers, cabinets and dressing tables from a bygone age are illuminated by strings of antique lighting while the dining area segues from tea room to cottage pantry to 1940s living room in pleasingly odd fashion. There’s a tangible ambience here too, from the happy chatter of the locals holding court by the bar to the laughter of visiting diners and easy charm of the staff. You’d be hard pressed to come across a snack with as much nostalgic clout as the insanely moreish Scotch eggs that come out of the Four Horseshoes’ kitchen. These golden coated meaty orbs packed herby pork and sweet black pudding around oozy egg to deliver a blissfully rustic hit. And they go further with a diddy little pan of spot-on hollandaise. To order one of these to share would be a grievous mistake, trust me.

A starter of smoked tuna was deliciously confusing: Luscious slices of superb quality fish the colour of wine had a deeply salty smokiness that seemed to place it just a species away from prosciutto. Weird, right? Great, too; with a little samphire and pickled cucumber for some crunch and tang, and a bright sesame dressing to lift everything. This surf and turf tip tumbled into our main course too with a dish of roasted lamb rack and one of pan fried bream. The lamb offered three happy chops of succulent, blushing meat cannily paired with an olive tapenade over a light vegetable cous cous. The bream, meanwhile, came perfectly cooked - with pleasantly frazzled crispy skin - sat atop a giddily fragrant tomato and prawn cassoulet jacked up with slivers of punchy chorizo and a hint of basil. With the first hints of autumn yellow beginning to tint the leaves outside, this dish of sunshine flavours tasted like a fond and fitting farewell to summer. Indeed as the light began to fade, so the Four Horseshoes settled into a soporific cosiness, bathed in warm lamplight. Thoughts turned to the squidgy depths of a sofa near the bar and a pint of something venerably hoppy. But not before desserts, naturally. Sweet options don’t exactly set the bar at the Four Horseshoes, but an Autumn Fruit Fool suited the mood perfectly, with its layers of cream and lightly spiced apples, pears, berries and rhubarb with the crunch and chew of homemade granola. Almost a victim of its own success, the Four Horseshoes is rarely less than busy,

particularly on Sundays for their much touted roasts. So do yourself a favour: get a gang together, book a table and head to ‘the Shoes’, one of the few truly unique independent pub restaurants in Surrey.

BRAIN

Remember summer? Nah, nor me. Regardless of whether we like it or not, though, it’s been and gone. An grasping a cup-a-soup, hand-knitted scarves and playing with your friends in the snow. No - it’s often jus

However, there are ways to stay healthy and how to toughen up your immune system. They are small an With this in mind, we checked out Guildford’s Food For Thought, Haydon Place, who guided us in the right direction of wintery happiness. Adding just small amounts of even smaller ingredients can make a big difference. Here are a few that could help improve your feeling this winter…

5 Chia Seeds Chia are among the healthiest seeds on the planet. Heck, they’re among the healthiest foods on the planet! Unlike the seed’s low calorie count, the amount of nutrients it contains is crazy-high. Just 1 ounce of Chia seed contains: 11 grams of fibre, 4 grams of protein, 9 grams of fat (5 of which are ome2ga-3), plus a load of other stuff that’s really, really, really good for you. Like, really good.

5

As well as the aforementioned really good stuff, Chia seeds are also jam-packed with Antioxidants that protect the sensitive fats in the seed from going rancid. One of the most popular ways to eat Chia seeds is in a Chia pudding. Like most other seeds, Chia can also be added to smoothies, cereals, shakes yoghurt etc. Pretty easy, really.

4 Coconut Palm Sugar Everyone knows sugar is the devil’s sweetener. The food gurus swear that it’s the granulated remains of hell. I don’t know, maybe they’re right. Whether or not you let that affect you, Coconut Sugar is a better alternative, regardless. It’s derived from the coconut palm tree and is full of goodness and nutritious greatness. It’s rich in potassium and iron and is very similar to the taste of traditional brown sugar. It can be a direct substitute for your normal sugar 1:1 and no changes need to be made. How to eat it? Like normal sugar.

3 3 Flaxseeds Flaxseeds – or Linum Usitatissimum as I always call them – are small oilseeds that originated from the Middle East loads of years ago. Since gaining popularity amongst the healthy humans some years ago, Flaxseeds have become present in many pre-made shop salads. Full of heart-healthy ingredients, Flaxseeds have been linked to improving digestion functioning, reducing the risk of heartrate, type 2 diabetes and cancer. Despite all the goodness and greatness in these little seeds, it’s recommended you drink plenty of water post-consumption. Flaxseeds are easy-as-pie to incorporate into a diet. Grind them down and sprinkle them on, basically, anything.

nd simple things, but they’re small things that you can add to big things, food-wise.

1 Hemp Seeds They are the seeds of the hemp plant, Cannabis Sativa. Despite being from the same species as cannabis (Marijuana), the seeds won’t make your hands and eyes heavy, as they contain only 0.001 percent Tetrahydrocannabinol (or THC) – the ingredient found in marijuana. Instead of the aforementioned side effects, the seeds are commonly used to ease eczema, reduce heart disease and aid digestion. Although only recently popular, hemp seeds have astounding nutritional value with their rich, healthy fats and numerous vital minerals, and are one of the few Superfoods that genuinely live up to their positive, hyped reputation.

1

Consuming is as easy as sprinkling on food that’s in need of a protein boost.

2 Spirulina Spirulina grows in both fresh and salt water and is the epitome of Superfood. It’s a bacteria called cyanobacterium, but the good kind of bacteria, and is commonly referred to as blue-green algae. Like plants, cyanobacterium produces energy from sunlight – also known as photosynthesis.

2

Gram for gram, Spirulina is literally the most nutritious food on the planet – although don’t hold us to that. The easiest way of consuming Spirulina – without taking the tablets – is to sprinkle Spirulina powder into a, say, smoothie or shake. Mealwise is more down to personal preference. It’s earthy, wholesome taste isn’t too everyone’s liking, so whether it’s sprinkled on vegetables for prominence or hidden in a flavoursome homemade curry, there’s a way for everyone to enjoy.

There truly are an infinite number of ways to improve one’s health, but with Guildford’s Food For Though, they make it tasty, enjoyable and also interesting. I could go on all night with different supplements and ingredients to add, but, in all honesty, we’ve all got things to be doing. For now, though, you’re better off heading down to the shop itself and having a route around to see what takes your fancy.

Wiggle Devil’s Punch

Zombie Stomp and Feast

Saturday 31 October, 8:00am,

Saturday 31 October, 20:00PM, Guildford

In its fourth year and selling out each year ‘The Devils Punch’ is a great late season event to stretch summer’s best sport out that little longer. The course weaves through the scenic roads between the North and South Downs, looping around the stunning Devils Punch Bowl before briefing heading up into the challenging North Downs.

It’s Hallowe’en and there’s gonna be a zombie outbreak. Well, humans dressed as zombies. Put the gun down and stop panicking. Two hundred “zombies” will be walking 2.5k or running 5k around Merrow Downs, with the army there to keep them in line. Afterwards, the zombies will stomp over to Guildford Golf Club’s Clubhouse and feast on a Hog Roast (with vegetarian options and side dishes) plus listen to live music.

This Sportive has been designed to be slightly shorter than our normal Sportives to reflect the time of year. But it is still a challenge, as the course includes a couple of awesome hills to get the legs pumping and amazing descents to get the heart racing, taking in the best of the varied landscape of Hampshire and Surrey. Although there are a couple of hills everything is achievable. A great end of season sportive on very quiet roads within a stunning area!

Tickets are £30 each with all proceeds going to the Detecting Women’s Cancers appeal at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, which participants are welcome to raise sponsorship for as well. Visit their Facebook page at Zombie Stomp and Feast

Play on, play on

By Tayler Willson

With the Rugby World Cup in full-bonce and doubling our commute’s length, it’s safe to say we’ve gone a bit ruggers mad. Whether mad, for you, means sitting in the juicer sinking Guinness, playing rugby-orientated drinking games or if it actually means playing rugby, it’s certainly affected the country in one way or another. If it’s the former that’s your mad, then carry on. No qualms. But if it’s the latter, I’m here to give you some guidance. I’m the Mr Miyagi to your Karate Kid. The Captain Kirk to your Enterprise. The Burger to your King. Listen to me: Rugby’s a man’s game. It’s a game of muscly people that look fat and fat people that look muscly. It’s weird, but it’s great. It’s all well and good watching it, but how about getting involved? Here’s our Guide 2 Getting Involved… We spoke to Paul Mosley of Dorking Rugby Club and he gave us some tips and advice on getting involved in the sport and what they look for in a player… On what to expect if you haven’t played before… Players new to the game should try our Wednesday night Touch Rugby which is all about passing, catching and running. It’s open to everybody - men, women, kids from teenagers up to pensioners - and is a fun non-contact introduction to the game. From there, potential players should turn up to train on a Tuesday and Thursday night from 19:30PM. First games would probably be with our more social B XV or our Extra A XV where young players play alongside older hands. For teenagers there is Sunday morning training and games. And for 16-18 year olds there is additional Youth Development Programme training on a Tuesday with a dedicated team of coaches. What type of players and attitudes are you looking for, here, at Dorking RFC? We are a broad church at Dorking RFC and like to think we’ve got room for just about everybody from our Minis section which provides a welcome for boys and girls from five upwards - right up to our senior competitive and social sides. If you want to play, then we will train you well all

the way through. If you want to watch then you’ll find plenty of like-minded men and women on the touch line and in the clubhouse. Is there a diet you recommend? Maybe any do’s and don’ts? Our 1st XV play in National 2 South where many clubs are semi-professional (although Dorking is not) so diet is crucial and players are given plenty of advice about diet which is tailored to the player’s needs.

Naturally a balanced diet is advisable but a player training several times a week and playing at a high level will need a good deal more food than the average man because they are expending so much more energy.

Cranleigh Rugby Football Club pitchero.com/clubs/ cranleighrfc Wildwood Lane, Cranleigh, Surrey, GU6 8JS

What type of sessions do you do at Dorking RFC? A variety of age suitable training and skills exercises and match training. The sessions are matched to the level of the individual by RFU qualified coaches. We train both boys and girls up to the age of eighteen.

Woking Rugby Football Club wokingrugby.com Stream Close, Off Rectory Lane, Byfleet, Surrey, KT14 7LZ

Finally, what other advice or tips would you give to someone wanting to get involved in Rugby? Wear a gum shield! And don’t be afraid to just simply turn up. Rugby clubs are warm places where everybody regardless of who they are will find a welcome. It’s a very social and satisfying game to get involved with. And this is an exciting time to get involved!

SPORT

OCTOBER 2015

talking to tayo Surrey Scorchers captain Tayo Ogedengbe has promised exciting and competitive basketball, as well as raising the games profile throughout the county. A new era of the sport is underway in Surrey, and Tayo, who played under Scorchers coach Creon

Raftopolous in the Guildford Heat days, returns to the county he describes as making him the player he is today. “It was an easy decision [to come back to Guildford]. In fact it was a no-brainer. I was at the point in my career where I was looking for a new challenge. “I’ve been in the BBL [British Basketball League] and overseas

By Tayler Willson

a lot, so I was kind of looking for something new and Creon provided me with it. “Guildford helped me base my career, it helped make me the player I am today. I played my third year pro here and I want to give something back. “I love the Guildford area and having played here before in the Guildford Heat days I have a link

SPORT

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Sport

to the area as well. So everything kind of made sense to me to come back and try and get basketball back to where it should be in the area.” Tayo admitted it wasn’t just the draw of Guildford that bought him back to where it all started: “Back when it was Heat, the fans were great. It hasn’t been the best here over the last few years, so I want to give something back to them. I want to give them back what they deserve.” Since leaving Heat, Tayo’s experienced basketball all around Europe, as well as representing England at various levels. The 6ft 6” forward said he’d learnt a lot from his Surrey hiatus and hopes he can pass that on to the rest of his squad. “Playing pro I never went to college, I just came straight out of university and turned pro. I never really got the real American college experience like the others, where you get to learn through a system.

“So going abroad really opened up basketball to me and it structured and calmed my game down a little. It really took me and my game to that next level and hopefully I can teach others that too.” As well as securing Tayo’s services, Creon’s brought in experience in Will Neighbour, Jacob Loveridge, Henry Wilkins, Andreas Schreiber, plus last season’s Surrey United Captain Elvisi Dusha – the only remaining player from the former team. Tayo, though, promised fans exciting basketball and was adamant Scorchers weren’t just there to make up the numbers: “We’re set on playing exciting basketball and I know in the past it hasn’t been that. We’ll definitely be competitive and play to a high-standard too. We’re not just putting any old team out there.

“We have GB internationals, NCAA players, Division 1 players etc. We’re not to be underestimated. “I’m not going to sugar-coat it, I want to make the play-offs. But I also understand it’s a building process, but that doesn’t take away the fact I want to win. The team has a winning mentality and that’s what the fans can expect week-in-weekout. “We’ve got a motto in the team that’s ‘No Excuses’, because we can make a lot of excuses. Like, we’re a new team, we haven’t got our players in, we haven’t practiced much – but there are no excuses, that’s it. That’s what we’re flowing with. “We want to be as successful as we can, I want some silverware and I want to bring it back Guildford.”

England Netball World Cup Review England left this summer’s Netball World Cup with a bronze medal, courtesy of a third-place play-off victory over Jamaica. Storm trio Tamsin Greenway, Rachel Dunn and Pamela Cookey were all part of the 20-woman squad that made the journey, with all three playing significant parts in the team’s success. England eventually fell victims to eventual runners-up New Zealand in the semi-final, who went on to lose narrowly to Australia 58-55 in the final, handing the Aussies their second World Cup title on the bounce.

Surrey Smashers Season Preview Smashers will be hoping to improve on their disappointing final defeat, by going all the way this campaign and being crowned champions. There have been wholesale changes this summer break, with Matt Nottingham, Soraya de Visch Eijbergen, Eefje Muskens and Joel Gayle all departing Surrey Sports Park. However, Robert Blair – three-time commonwealth medallist – will join up with Smashers, as will world number 82 Sophie Brown. The Smashers have only two home games this season, so tickets will go fast. Visit: www.surreysmashers.co.uk for more information.

TEST DUMMY Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

By Tayler Willson I saw a man floored and choked by another man’s feet and it is single-handedly the best thing I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen grown men cry, I’ve seen a baby smile for the first time, I even saw someone fall off their bike not too long ago – but nothing will compare to the man on the ground with the purple face.

I

magine, if you will: boxing, wrestling, karate, taekwondo and judo (and any other like-minded sport) all thrown into one mixing pot, before a light peppering of a punch to the abdominals. Bung it in the oven for a two-hour session and there you have it: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I was at Hone Gym in Witley, Godalming the home of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s Nova Forca. Our resident photographer, Fiona Digby-Jones’ husband has been a keen Jiu-Jitsuer

for a number of years now and, knowing full-well the brutality of it, suggested I give it a try. *gulps* I wasn’t familiar with it. Sure I’d heard of Jiu-Jitsu, but had assumed it was pretty much the same as all the other martial arts, y’know: Kick, walk a bit, kick, punch, punch twice, stop, turn around, shout something in a different language, kick, walk, kick. But after just one session - one brutal, painful, but bloody brilliant session – I could see it was so much more.

I was warned pre-session that this was an ego-free zone. I was also warned that I needed to be pretty open about what I was going to try that night. I nodded in agreement, slipped into my gear (see images for clothing that is too small) and we warmed up. After breaking a sweat and (kind of) completing my first core workout in about nine years, we progressed to the harder stuff: the throwing, the choking, the purple faces and the

SPORT

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Sport

pain. Our Instructor, Simon, showed us a move, we then paired off and attempted to execute it. Unlike Karate, Taekwondo, Judo etc. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seemed more relatable to everyday life. It seemed more worthwhile. Albeit I don’t grapple with people on the floor, but I’d sooner find myself doing so than attempting to roundhouse kick someone. You see? To me it seemed modern; it seemed, in essence, more fun. Simon described it as a game of chess. You force them into a move, so you can then pounce. Sometimes you have to be patient, you have to bide your time, but when they fall into the trap you’ve led them in to, you have them exactly where you want them.

He demonstrated this by letting one of his brightest Jiu-Jitsuers (?) slam him to the floor, with his feet (the aforementioned BEST THING I’VE EVER SEEN). For the final half-hour of the session we sparred. Two minutes sparring – or “rolling” as it’s known – then you move on to the next person. I thought, “What’s two minutes, ay? Pfft!” - see images for immediate regret of this thought. For all the pain and hard work, I liked the technicalities of this sport and liked how wrong my preconceptions were. I had to think rather than just do. When I found my body pinned to the floor by someone’s knee, I had to make a split-second decision as to how I would escape, but combine it

with an attack too - turn the tables. I enjoyed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I really enjoyed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I woke up the following day aching, yes, and I was four hours late to work, yes, but I enjoyed it. And, well, it’s rare you find exercise you enjoy, right?

BUSINESS News BLUEPRINT DRAWN UP TO RECONNECT GUILDFORD TOWN CENTRE AND RIVERSIDE Anyone who resides in or is familiar with Woking will know that the town has undergone a huge redevelopment in recent years. Indeed the town centre is unrecognisable from how it looked half a decade ago. The bold blueprint to reconnect Guildford’s town centre with its historic riverside would transform underused areas to create high-quality, attractive new homes, retail, leisure, hotel and office space. The plan responds to local people’s feedback and ideas from the initial vision consultation back in July 2014. It would protect the heritage and

character of the town’s core and bring much needed transport and flood management improvements. Action to address the town’s traffic problems and creating ‘streets for people’ are two core themes of the draft Masterplan. A waterfront community park would open up public access to the river. Moreover improved, safe pedestrian and cycle routes would connect the town centre’s existing facilities to the new residential, shopping, entertainment and business developments.

improve traffic flows, offer better parking and promote sustainable transport. Guildford rail station would become one of a series of central hubs to connect all modes of travel to, from and within the town. Councillor Stephen Mansbridge said: “We want Guildford to be a better place to live, work and visit. The draft Masterplan proposes some exciting designs to regenerate the town centre and secure a vibrant future. We’re committed to delivering what the town and borough need for the benefit of local people.”

There are also proposals to enhance crossings over the railway and river,

GUILDFORD WINS PRESTIGIOUS NIGHT TIME AWARD FOR THE SECOND TIME

BUSINESS EVENTS OCTOBER 2015

Our fair county town has once again been accredited with a Purple Flag for Night Time Economy, recognising excellence in the management of the town centre at night. But what does this mean? Basically, it’s similar to Green Flag Award for parks and Blue Flag for beaches. It leads to Purple Flag status for town centres that meet or surpass the standards of excellence in managing the evening and night-time economy. This entails all aspects from cleanliness to access and transport, street lighting to signage, entertainment variety and choice of styles in bars, clubs and restaurants.

A prestigious award, the campaign has been successfully driven by the good people at Experience Guildford. EG, who are the town centre’s Business Improvement District (BID), have worked hard to make sure that an evening out in Guildford is as safe, clean and entertaining as possible – and by golly, with their second Purple Flag now officially awarded, they’ve gone and achieved it. For more information on Guildford’s Purple Flag status and ongoing initiatives to support Guildford town centre’s night time economy, visit experienceguildford.com.

SOCIAL MEDIA: An Essential Tool for Business By Kia Irving

Surrey based expert Kia Irving shines a light on how to harness the power of social media for your business... The Internet is always “on” and while having a good quality responsive website for your company is crucial, the next contender is an active presence on the right social media channels. Consumers expect to be able to communicate 24/7 with customer services via Twitter, find out what’s new on Facebook and check out brands and their luxe visuals with Instagram. But what does it mean for SMEs, and how should they go about utilising social media as a marketing too? Let’s start with some statistics: there are 55 million people here in the UK with access to the Internet, and 59% of those users have at least one active social media account. OFCOM found that an estimated 96% of internet-using adults in the UK have a Facebook profile, and given that that report was written in 2014 (2015 findings are yet to be released) there is a high chance that stat is holding its own, if not on the rise. Where to begin? Firstly you will need to have a grasp on your target audience; their age and gender play a vital role in choosing which social media channels will work best for your company. For example, 51.3% of Facebook users are female, and 25.5% of all users are aged between 25 – 34 years old. While there is no firm evidence, it is thought that Twitter sways more heavily towards a male audience. Another consideration is if you’re targeting B2C or B2B as your audience, as it is more likely you will capture consumers with Facebook and businesses with Twitter.

Your content should be professional while bringing a healthy dose of personality... Why use it? The primary goals for social media should be to increase company and brand awareness, driving traffic to your website and to help engage with potential leads. Having an active social media presence can also help boost your SEO rankings too, as the more mentions there are of your company, the further up your company will appear in search engines. What to post? Aim to treat your social media channels as an extension of your company website. It should be a good mix of company news, what you offer and your expertise, plus relevant insights into the wider industry you represent. Your content should be professional while bringing a healthy dose of personality, engaging, and employ a consistent tone of voice. How to measure success? This will really depend on what attainable targets you set yourself, and understanding what social media adds to your marketing mix is crucial. If you are a brand or designer with visuals at the forefront of your company, then engagement through “likes” is a good way to measure performance. If you set out to educate clients and/ or the public about your services, then perhaps click-through rate to your website is where you should measure. BUSINESS PROFILE: WITH SIMON PURE JEWELLERS

THE ART OF JEWELLERY MAKING By Josie Pullen

Simon Pure Jewellery Design are experts in creating stunning tailor-made pieces that are guaranteed to be unique and special to the owner. I was lucky enough to visit the Simon Pure workshop to create my own ring (with just a little bit of help...)

T

he Simon Pure showroom and workshop is located at Smithbrook Kilns in the heart of the Cranleigh countryside, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the village, which is just ten minutes away. Much like the sister branch on Guildford’s Swan Lane, the showroom glistens with sparkling gemstones and gorgeous gold, silver and platinum pieces. After a warm welcome from the team and a short browse around, we were taken behind the scenes and shown the stock layout process. Welcomed by a rainbow of coloured gemstones, Alix explained her process in picking pieces for the showroom, which would then be crafted in the workshop to create the final product. When purchasing gemstones, Alix compared the process to ‘like being in a candy shop for adults’ as the colours are so vibrant and inviting. Moreover they are unique; you cannot guarantee that you will be able to find the same one again. After we had marvelled over the beauty of the gemstones (our favourite was Aquamarine), we headed into the workshop for a crash course on how to make the jewellery we had just been admiring. Despite being a little apprehensive due to my complete lack of skill and untold levels of clumsiness, Kevin and the team reassured me whilst explaining the method involved in crafting a ring. The equipment and tools ranged from the sturdy made-tolast hammer, to the more high-tech laser machine. My ring started life as a small rod of silver, and the first step in turning it into a piece of jewellery was heating it to a high temperature. This way we were able to mould it into shape. When the silver had been flattened into a more workable shape, I was shown how surprisingly easy it is to bend this metal into a rounded form. As silver is the most reflective metal, it can be quite hard to use the laser machine equipment that is often used to engrave, cut out or sold metal. Therefore, after the ring had been rounded, to complete the circle it

was necessary to solder the silver together. In between heating the silver and the following steps, the silver was treated in a formulated liquid, which they called ‘pickle’, which cleansed the oxidised surface of the metal. To make sure the ring would fit my finger, I tried on several sizes, all which range on a scale of alphabetical letters. My ring size measured at size ‘M’ which would therefore be the aim for the next few steps into getting the ring the correct size. Initially, because eventually I would be hammering the ring in the last few stages, the size we were starting off with was smaller. This allowed for the metal to expand when the pressure was applied, and consequently being the right size. Hammering the almost-completed silver ring was one of the highlights for me, as I was finally seeing a version of it close to its final state. The hammering gave a mottled effect on the silver, which gives a one-off light reflecting textured appearance. Every step in the progression of ring making requires a high level of concentration and patience, especially as so often the jewellery Simon Pure create is very small and delicate. As it usually takes at least 10 years to fully master this highly skilled profession, being able to create a ring in a few hours was an achievement for me to say the least! The team at The Smithbrook Kilns make producing jewellery look completely effortless and easy, when in reality I found that it is definitely not a simple art to master; therefore I admire their skill and dedication to their craft. Thank you to all the team at Simon Pure Jewellery Designer for allowing me to learn about the craft of jewellery making, and of course letting me create my own piece of unique jewellery!
