THE LOCAL RECRUITMENT SOLUTION

INSIDE... You’ll have noticed last month, tucked up inside its elder sibling, a smaller, though still as mighty in substance albeit lighter publication, our newest bestie; The Little Guide 2…

Isn’t it gorgeous out there at the moment? Fields and meadows awash in bright green wherever the eye wanders. June continues to flourish with events blooming and blossoming left, right and centre. Quite literally. Commemorations and celebrations are many in ode to the sealing of the Magna Carta 800 years ago in Runneymede. As per the usual frivolities we like to bestow upon you, The Guide 2 Your Month serves as your social calendar. Go forth reader, explore what our wonderful towns, villages and their people have to offer us in ways of food, drink and oodles of the cultural stuff we know you love. We talk to the young prodigy of piano, virtuoso in his own right, 15 year old Shane Thomas ahead of his debut show at Woking’s New Victoria Theatre. And our resident foodie Rich Lee (in addition to eating his way through the month), explores everything but the porridge at The Clink Restaurant based at HMP Highdown and HMP Send. Fascinating stuff. Enjoy. Explore. Mr D’Arcy

Throughout the year we’ll be bringing you various Little Guide 2’s of the varying agendas of our day to day lives. This month we look to the summer holidays with the small and not so smaller ones of your tribe. So pencils and diaries at the ready, let’s pen some plans!

SURREY INFANTRY MUSEUM DEVASTATED IN CLANDON HOUSE FIRE

Although it received little attention, amid the tragic devastation caused by the fire that left Clandon House a burnt shell on Wednesday 29th April, the blaze also claimed another victim, destroying hundreds of years of history alongside that contained in the rest of the 18th century mansion.

the regiments,” says Managing Curator of the museum Steve Johnson. “Anyone who’s had any involvement is pretty heartbroken that nearly 350 years of history has gone up in smoke.”

While not part of the National Trust which owns Clandon Park, the Surrey Infantry Museum was the principal depository of records and artefacts belonging to Surrey’s Royal regiments and was located in the basement of Clandon House. The museum contained memorabilia from The Queen’s Royal Regiment (founded in 1661) and the East Surrey Regiment (1881). The two regiments were amalgamated to form the Queen’s Royal Surrey Regiment in 1959.

Among the artefacts destroyed by the fire were regimental colours - the flags used to rally the soldiers, musical instruments, regimental silver, uniforms and in particular, medals, most of which were donated by soldiers’ families so that they could reside with the rest of their regiment. In addition to the ground floor museum, the attic was also lost which contained the reserve collection of uniforms, paintings and other artefacts.

“It’s difficult for someone who hasn’t been in the military to realise how important the museum is to what would be considered the family of

Among those objects was one of two footballs that were kicked across no-man’s land on the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

Mr Johnson was the first person to discover the fire shortly after 4pm on Wednesday before immediately sounding the alarm and calling the emergency services.

Despite the shock and sadness felt by Steve and his colleagues at the loss of such an irreplaceable treasure trove of military antiquity, he is stoically determined to rebuild. “We are now in what we call ‘Operation Phoenix’. We are determined that there will be another Surrey Infantry Museum somewhere even if it takes months or years. We’re getting some fantastic support from the 138 other regimental museums across the country. “We will rise from the ashes.”

Our Citizens...

AFTER THE ELECTIONS A few weeks have passed since May’s explosive General Election but up and down the country the dust has yet to settle. As commentators still vigorously debate an election that installed the first Conservative ma jority government since 1992, humiliated Labour and all but wiped out the Liberal Democrats, we asked you for your take…

EWAN

LIZZIE

Did you vote in this election?

Did you vote in this election?

Yes, I’ve always voted. It’s important that we use our vote, because it can make a difference. People have fought and died for the right to vote in this country.

Yes, I’m 22 so it was the first time I was able to vote. I voted for the Green Party, because their policies matched up with what I believed in the most. I would have perhaps considered voting for Labour but I thought it better to vote for the Greens and for what I believe in.

Senior Business Lecturer

Who did you vote for? I voted Green and have done for the last three elections. I live on a farm, that’s probably why I voted Green; their policies on the countryside and climate change are acceptable to my needs. Nothing David Cameron offers appeals to me, and Ed Milliband was just a muppet that shouldn’t have been allowed anywhere near the leadership.

What were you most disappointed about in this election? It was the fact that 1.5million people voted SNP into 56 seats in Scotland and 1million voted Green and they got one seat. So I think the sooner we get to proportional representation the better. That and the fact that we have 4million or so people in this country that would vote for UKIP.

Public Relations

What were your feelings on 8th May when the nation saw the results? I was really hoping that it was going to be a coalition Labour government with Lib Dems or Greens, SNP. All the good ones! So I was very, very disappointed.

Why do you think the Conservatives are so entrenched in the South East? I think that it’s because not enough young people vote, which is probably a big reason why that is. But it’s the way the voting system is. If there had been proportional representation there would have been 25 Green MPs but instead there were only one.

ANTHONY Estate Agent

Who did you vote for? The Conservatives. Why? Doing what I do, Labour’s plans for the housing market would have been fairly catastrophic for all concerned. They were ill conceived so they wouldn’t get my vote.

What are you hoping to see happen over the next five years? Continued growth. I think they’ve done a fantastic job considering they inherited a phenomenal mess. They’ve done very impressive things in the last five years to turn it round and readdress the deficit and pull us back into positive growth. I think they deserve enormous credit.

Why do you think the other main party leaders failed to win crucial votes? Where do you want to start? Ed Milliband just wasn’t a very likeable character. Not what I consider to be prime minister material. But I feel sorry for Nick Clegg, because I think he does talk a fair amount of sense and he’s certainly a lot less odious that a lot of politicians. It’s a shame he had to step down.

ARMED FORCES DAY Armed Forces Day is coming to Surrey at the end of the month and Guildford will be the epicentre of this great occasion. But what is Armed Forces Day all about? Well first and foremost Armed Forces Day is all about us the public showing our support for the brave men and women who serve our country as well as giving them the much deserved appreciation for their sacrifice. Secondly, although no less importantly, it’s also about raising awareness about local units and what they are up to. In both cases it’s not just about

those currently serving, it’s also about veterans from past conflicts as well. All over the country there will be local events but it is Surrey’s and Guildford’s honour to host the national event this year. Here’s a quick guide to what will be going on that day in the town. The day kicks off with a service at Guildford Cathedral from 9:30am. After the service, at 11:30am, there will be a military parade involving hundreds of Army, Navy and Air Force personnel as well as Boys and Girls of the Cadets. The Parade will start from the bottom of Guildford High Street and travel to Stoke Park where the main show of the day will have been under way from 10:30am. The park will have stands and statics displays. There

will be shows throughout the day including The Royal Navy ‘Raiders’ Parachute Display Team, an Infantry Combat Battle Display, Apache and Merlin Helicopters, The Royal Signals White Helmets Motorcycle Display Team, The Royal Air Force Queen’s Colour Squadron, The Band of the Royal Marines as well as other Bands. The fun doesn’t end there because as well as all that fun there will also be live music and performances from Guildford College Performing Arts, From the Jam, The Rock Choir, as well as the Tenor Thomas Hobbs.

That’s not all the fun as even now as we go to print there’s yet more acts and entertainment to be announced so keep an eye on our website or visit www.armedforcesday.org.uk

MAGNIFICENT MAGNA CARTA Well, June is the month that sees the 800th anniversary of the signing of ‘The Great Charter’ and we too wish to celebrate this birth of modern democracy! Around the County there will be many events and shows all in honour of the Magna Carta, culminating in The Official Ceremony at Runnymede Meadows on June 15th, details of which can be found at magnacarta800th.com. Photo By National Trust-Andrew Butler

To keep things a little easier, we’ve highlighted four other events all under their own category for you to definitely have a look at. Oh, and if your knowledge of the Magna Carta is somewhat lacking be sure to check out May’s The Guide 2 magazine for a bit of a lowdown…

AN EVENT FOR THE KIDS AND FAMILY: RUNNYMEDE BOAT TRIP Why not celebrate a board the newly refurbished replica of a Victorian paddle steamer? Head to the Runnymede Boathouse, climb aboard and cruise upstream to the Bells of Ouzeley. On the return journey, the boat stops at Runnymede Pleasure Grounds for 5 minutes so passengers can get on or off. This is the perfect spot for a picnic with the family. The trip itself isn’t too long and with level easy landing stages, we think this is a great all round family day out. You can climb aboard at either The Runnymede Boathouse or the Runnymede Pleasure Grounds but your best bet is at the boathouse as this is where all the parking is. For more details visit frenchbrothers.co.uk.

SOME EVENTS FOR THE HISTORY BUFFS: LECTURE BY ANTHONY BARNETT A MODERN MAGNA CARTA

LECTURE BY ADRIAN LEAK FREEDOM: REALITY OR DREAM

United Church of Egham | 10th June

Guildford Cathedral | 6th July

If you fancy getting your teeth into the history of the Magna Carta and finding out a bit more why not head to Egham to hear Anthony Barnett discuss ‘A Modern Magna Carta’. Expect an in-depth look into how he Magna Carta became such a stalwart of the English political system and an exploration into whether we need a modern Magna Carta and what such a document might contain. The lecture will take place at the United Church of Egham, near the site of the Magna Carta’s signing. Visit eghammuseum.org/magnacarta to find out more.

A bit later on in July Guildford cathedral will host Adrian Leak who will be on hand to speak about the developing concepts of freedom and human rights starting from the Magna Carta right up until the inauguration of the Human Rights Act in 1998. This fascinating lecture will explore the issues of liberty as well as the responsibility of restraint that comes with it. What’s more before the lecture starts there will be a chance for you to study a facsimile of the Magna Carta which will be on display in the Cathedral. Find out more at guildford-cathedral.org.

Sunday the 14th of June is the day to remember as it is the Big Ringing Day. As we go to press the full details are being ironed out but we thought it a wonderful and traditional display of celebration. Nationally the bells will ring out from about 3 in the afternoon until 4. By the by the correct term for a bell ringer is a campanologist. Now you know.

So head to your local, put down the wine or fizzy continental stuff and raise your mug of fine English ale! More details can be found at beerdaybritain.co.uk

SURREY SEARCH AND RESCUE Whats an evening’s training like?

This month we’re going to delve a bit more into what it’s like to spend an evening training with Surrey Search and Rescue

By Will Knowlton

S

o here we are at Brooklands College, an engine’s rev from the famous motor museum. Before me is a whole host of what appears to be wooden acrobatic equipment. There’s a small group of us huddled together for a Technical Rescue exercise. It may seem odd to people that SURSAR uses ropes at all; after all, Surrey isn’t surrounded by mountains. But actually a good knowledge of knots and how to use a rope properly is essential to all rescue work.

surrounding a climbing tower that must be at least 60 feet high. (When I learn that part of the course is to climb it, it suspiciously grows in apparent size to 200 feet.) Evenly split into two teams we head off, armed with the knowledge that shark infested custard surrounds us. It’s all rather jolly and it’s only after a few minutes that the reality of what we’re doing sinks in. Three milk crates are cable-tied end-to-end, as

My arms are tired, my fingers numb from gripping the wall and my brain is forced to engage to remember a knot. This perfectly simulates the real world stress of a technical extraction. Everything has to be perfect. Someone’s relying on you to help them and your dependability relies on the man or woman next to you. If you’ve been up for hours, it’s cold and you’re tired, it doesn’t matter - it must be right. Having abseiled to the foot of Barad-dûr, it’s a sprint to the finish just outside the climbing area. But we’re not done. Still heaving our crates and gasping for breath, we’re confronted by four trees with ropes tied around to form anchor points. We must inspect each one. Three are deliberately weak; one is “just right”. Like sweaty Goldilocks’, we all inspect the ropes and make our choice.

“Put a Munter Hitch on that Karabiner”

Consider having to haul a loaded stretcher up a muddy steep hill in the rain; if you were in the stretcher, wouldn’t you want to know that there’s no chance of sledging down the hill because the guys have you all secure? Rope work is also important to those on the water as ropes can and are used to “snitch” casualties and drag them back to safety.

Tonight, though, has a fun air to it. We are to transport some milk crates around a course designed by our two instructors, Boss G and his able assistant Dave A. There are high wires and ledges, as well as low logs and walkways, all

cumbersome to move around as a body on a stretcher. The low logs we are supposed to clamber over without dropping the milk crates are tricky, and the meandering and weaving demands constant communication from everyone, lest a hazard trips a team mate. The tower looms in the gathering dusk. By the time I’m doing a passable impression of Adam West’s Batman my arms ache - I’m shot. It’s deliberate; we’re atop a tower, which we have to abseil down. Every knot has to be safe, and every rope secure. It’s now a mental test.

We all made the right choice. We all crossed the finish line together.

HISTORY By Will Knowlton

As you’re all aware, I tend to take history with a pinch of my own saltiness. It is rare therefore that a subject comes around warranting further investigation of the otherwise hidden facets of a person or an event.

In that spirit, let’s find out a bit more about Lewis Caroll. Firstly, Lewis was not his real name, neither was Caroll now you mention it. No, in fact Lewis was actually called Charles Ludwidge Dodgson. We all know him for his writing, all of which makes sense or not depending on how far down the bottle of absinthe you are on any given Friday, but what you may not know is that he was a dab hand at other things as well as writing and photography. Old Lewis was good at inventing things. He made a writing tablet called the nyctograph which although sounds like a measuring device for head lice was actually a device that meant you could take notes in the dark of night because all normal and sane people wake up in the night with a great earth shattering literary idea that just must be written down. This is how I know where I am in the food chain; I just wake up needing a pee. Anyways, the nyctograph was made of a bit of card with sixteen squares and a system of symbols that representing an alphabet of Lewis’ design, used letter shapes not too different

from the shapes a smart phone recognises in the search bar when searching for things like images on the internet. Just like the modern commuter, Lewis was bored by long journeys and came up with word games one of which was essentially Scrabble. He also invented something called a doublet which was a sort of word ladder. You start with a word like Log, change that to Lot, that to Cot and then finally that to Cat. Much hilarity and Kudos ensued I’m sure. During the whole of his life, whilst not meandering down the River Wey and penning poetry, he also invented the rule for finding the day of the week for any date (having lost his calendar we assume) a steering device for a tricycle (what did tricyclists do before then I know not), new systems of parliamentary representation (still needs work), double sided sticky tape and also a thingy for helping bedridden patients read from a book placed sideways so they didn’t have to miss out on any of his publications or collections of photographs. There, and you thought he just wrote books. Oh no, dear reader, there was a lot more to this man than meets the eye.

more than just alice

TALKING TO: SHANE

When did you first realise that piano was something that you wanted to try? I wanted to play the piano from the age of 3 but it wasn’t until 4 years later that we had the budget to do that, so when I was 7 I was finally able to start playing the piano and from there I sort of taught myself.

You have an album that’s about to come out, tell us a bit about it? It was recorded all in one place at Metropolis Studio’s in London and the guy who produced was called Xavier, we just call him Xav though. We tended to go in with the intention of recording three pieces and these would be the ones that I would have practiced and we would just get as much done as possible.

Do you have a favourite track from your album?

Can you play any of those instruments?

I’m fond of the track Mrs Matisse, I don’t know if you’ve heard that one. I like the French influences in it.

I can play a bit of the cello.

On that note, what are you influenced by? Anything I listen to. Any genre, absolutely everything.

You are performing at the New Victoria Theatre on the 27th June and you’ve had to score the music for your backing musicians...how is that going? I haven’t quite completed the task yet, but we’re quite close. I’ll have 5 musicians behind me, all the strings; cello, violin, viola and double bass.

Apart from piano and cello are there any other instruments you’re keen to explore? I don’t know…it’s quite enough work playing the piano and cello. I don’t think I’d want to pick up anymore at the moment.

You’re currently composing a piece for the BBC’s world music day on the 5th June... how did that come about? Yes they found out about me and they approached me about it actually. It was quite a surprise when I found out about the assignment. It’s very short, they required two minutes or less, they actually set a time limit.

THOMAS

By Alex D’Arcy -Orga

Let us introduce the phenomenal talents of 15 year old pianist and composer Shane Thomas, who lives with his father, younger brother and sister in Byfleet, Woking. His debut album Note My Dream is released on the 1st June and he headlines his own concert on the 27th June at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking. Here is a young man destined for the big time.

the year below and we’re both music fans, we’re into lots of similar things. I’m also going to Manchester soon to play with the Great Northern Orchestra at the Academy, a 700-seater concert hall. It’s part of a piece of film being made about me at the moment

Who’s your favourite artists / composers (old and new)? Okay, I’ll start with old. Some of my favourite composers include Chopin, Debussy… do you know Shostakovich at all? I really like his music. And there are some more recent classical composers as well. There’s one guy called Morton Feldman, you probably haven’t heard of him and the other one is Penderecki.

And outside of classical music? I’ll establish a couple of things… number one – I do not listen to Dub-Step and secondly – I do not listen to a lot of pop music either. But I do tend to listen to other genres like House, Trance and Chill-Step, it’s powerful but calming at the same time. I like ambient music and sounds.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT SHANE… It shouldn’t be too difficult. They want me to write a piece about the CBBC channel and my overall impression from it.

How have you found balancing school life with your extra -curricular compositions? Well, for the most part it’s not been too difficult to be honest, but sometimes when I’ve got things coming up really soon and they’re big events it can be a bit more difficult but it hasn’t been too much of a problem.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hmmm. It’s almost impossible to say. Hopefully I would have had some success by then and that my music will be being performed by other people and played on radio stations. That’s where I’d like to be.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I tend to build lego. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with Lego Technics, I’m good with that, all the mechanics. I’ve got a pretty big collection, all the motors so you can make moving cars and stuff.

“Shane is AMAZING” Jamie Cullum

“The kid is incredible” Peter Andre

Do you have a favourite place to visit in Surrey?

“We’ve never met another person like Shane before” The Yehudi Menuhin Music School

There’s this really nice park, do you know where Send is near Woking? There’s a really good recreation ground there and that’s usually where I go to be a bit of an idiot.

“In 54 years, I’ve never come across another child prodigy, remotely like Shane” Professor Stephen Rhys (Royal Academy of Music)

Do you have any plans for the summer holidays? We plan to go to Alton Towers for a couple of days and also I’ll probably visit my friend George. He’s my best friend and he’s in

WHERE TO EAT: THE RED LION

By Rich Lee We visit the Horsell gastropub that’s beloved by locals and a destination for everyone else…

A

lways popular, since a dramatic refurbishment two years ago the Red Lion has never been less than busy, drawing locals and visitors alike until these days it resembles a hub as much as it does a pub. While the building has been extended in all sorts of interesting directions, and the the addition of a breathtaking garden, inside it has retained all the charming rustic décor but with modern sensibilities and an eye for intriguing little details. A warm sense of nostalgia runs throughout with many nods towards the motorsport heritage of nearby Brooklands. In the last few years the Red Lion has also received quite a stellar reputation as a local’s gastropub, serving quality British food with many ingredients sourced from within the village and nearby. But then again they all say that. Thankfully though, that’s exactly what we found on our visit. We arrived for dinner and despite a flood of other eager diners, service was effortlessly swift and always came with a smile. Make no mistake, this is as distinctly a restaurant as it is a pub and it runs like one. Woe betide a gastropub that tries to knock you over the head with frilly presentations and frou-frou intentions. The Red Lion understands this; that all the flair should be found in the flavours. And all the pleasure in the eating.

And so it was with two deliciously beguiling starters. A duck, pork & pistachio terrine was a neat slab of earthy, sweet and salty flavours and pleasingly coarse textures, complemented perfectly with a tangy celeriac remoulade and pickles. A light dish of luscious crab, spiked with a little chilli and spices with a silky herby aioli, was also a winner, both courses being exactly the sort of simple yet satisfying dishes you come to a place like the Red Lion for. An unusual Mains of spiced vegetable and walnut strudel resembled a large golden spring roll, which when cracked open released smoky wafts of cumin and turmeric, revealing steaming tender vegetables inside. Pretty meaty for a veggie dish, I have to say, with a pleasant heat too that was relieved with a little cooling cucumber and mint yoghurt. Across from this I enjoyed just about all of my favourite things on one plate. Mushrooms, cream and garlic - I could almost stop there, but this happy marriage was piled atop a succulent chicken escalope, pillowy potato gnocchi and wilted kale. I would go back for this alone. Desserts didn’t sing outside the hymn book but these standards were fine nonetheless. A key lime pie was smooth and tangy in all the right places and a banoffee sundae was decadent fun. The

Red Lion certainly knows their wines too, so to complement all this we enjoyed a gorgeous crisp and fruity sauvignon blanc from New Zealand. It’s fair to say that we came away from the Red Lion converted and completely won over by this marvellous pub; a pub that does Gastro better than many others for miles around. TG2 DOES TIME AT THE CLINK Rich Lee went behind bars to visit a remarkable charity that rehabilitates offenders through training in horticulture and hospitality, followed by lunch at a very special restaurant… “Welcome to HMP Send,” intoned the prison officer as he unlocked the security entrance with nothing like the melodramatic gravitas I was privately hoping for. But then, it was a good day to be going to prison. Which is to say that the sun was out, the air was warm and not even the imposing 35ft barbed fences that ringed the complex could dull what was otherwise a perfect early summer’s morning. HMP Send is a closed Female Training Prison, one that enables all prisoners to work and partake in education, therapeutic and recreational physical activities. Vocational training is crucial to the regime at HMP Send, but few programmes are as remarkable as that provided by the Clink Charity. Current estimates say that 75% of those who leave prison without employment go on to reoffend within five years. The Clink aims to significantly reduce that prospect for their enrolled offenders through training programmes in horticulture and hospitality, and so far, with a reoffending rate of only 12.5%, it appears to be working very well indeed. At HMP Send, prisoners cultivate and harvest fruit and vegetables all year round, produce that then finds its way to the Clink’s own kitchens at four other prisons in the UK. The prisoners that these kitchens train turn these ingredients into exquisite,

modern dishes served in high end restaurants that are open to the public either inside or outside the prison walls. Governor Carlene Dixon, Chief Executive of the Clink Charity Chris Moore and Clink Garden Manager Gary Gates took me on a stroll through HMP Send’s gardens and nurseries. The prison itself isn’t half as forbidding as might be expected; an open complex albeit behind wire and fences, it consists of barrack like cell blocks, landscaped gardens and grounds and training facilities. Away from the main compound, I’m shown around numerous polytunnels growing every kind of fruit, vegetable and herb and all attended to by those women prisoners, currently around 14, on the Clink’s programme. “Work follows a normal working day and week,” explained the Clink’s Chris Moore. “So they start at 9am, work until lunch and then for the rest of the afternoon. They work 40 hours a week. Along the way they learn to work together as a team and develop social skills.” Garden Manager Gary keeps his trainees engaged by growing new and exciting produce. At the moment he’s visibly buzzing about cucamelons, tiny watermelons the size of a grape with a citrus sweetness. “It can be a challenge to keep them interested so we’ll always keep trying new things. Most of these women haven’t had the best starts. So we train them and for me it’s moments like when they eat their first tomato fresh from the vine, that eureka moment. It’s very satisfying.”

Governor Dixon clearly shares his enthusiasm. “You see a sense of pride which is really important for those women with low selfesteem. You see that confidence grow and that will help them in their lives upon release.” The courses are available to prisoners during the last 6-18 months of their sentence with entry dependent upon adherence to a custodial plan and good behaviour. They can earn NVQ and City and Guilds qualifications that will help them pursue careers in horticulture upon release, but Chris Moore says that their chosen vocation isn’t what is important. “We want them to go into work but most of all we don’t want them to return to prison. So it doesn’t matter to us if they go into horticulture but that they take these life skills with them.”

The Clink Restaurant at HMP High Down My first visit to a prison (honest, Guvnor) was rather benign. But upon arrival at HMP High Down outside Banstead that afternoon, with a dark and noisy storm approaching, things certainly took a turn for the grim. A Category B prison for male offenders, High Down’s fences are higher, it’s walls thicker, it’s population larger and, to my mind, several times bleaker. But after going through a checkpoint followed by a short walk through the ‘neutral zone’ and through another heavy security door, I suddenly find I’m not in a prison anymore. I’m standing, jaw agape, in a very tasteful and very busy restaurant. Within these prison walls was where the seed of the Clink Charity was first sewn. In 1999, Catering Manager Alberto Crisci saw the potential in prisoners he trained in his kitchens. In 2005 he developed the idea of the Clink Restaurant which finally opened in 2009 becoming the first public restaurant to operate inside a prison. The next year the Clink Charity was formed to expand the initiative across four more prisons and now boasts a successful private event catering branch as well. The restaurants are frequently graced by chef ambassadors, the likes of which include Giorgio Locatelli and Michel Roux Jr, happy to impart their skills to the trainees. I joined Chief Executive Chris Moore for an exceptional lunch beneath the gentle glow

of coloured ceiling lamps, surrounded by the prisoner’s own extraordinary artworks, the happy chatter of fellow diners and the buzz of the open kitchen nearby. Chris himself comes from a career in hospitality having started as a chef and rose to catering manager at Harrods. The Clink invited him to manage the project and in the five years since he has seen the charity expand at an astonishing rate and scope, winning many awards along the way. “This has been the most rewarding job I’ve ever done,” he told me. “To see men walk in broken and walk out tall is immensely satisfying.” The Clink Restaurant serves breakfast and lunch from Monday to Friday and requires only a painless security check to book a table. And book a table I recommend you do, if not just for the quality of the dining experience but for the chance to see firsthand how this charity is helping to turn troubled offenders into skilled and motivated workers with an approach that employs, above all, dignity and inspiration as its best tools. When I left HMP High Down the storm had arrived in full fury, presenting me with the awkward yet fleeting notion that it had become a very bad day to leave prison. But one thing was indisputable: Time served at the Clink is time well spent indeed.

a Complete Four-Person Hospitality Package for MADNESS at Epsom Live!

Madness are quite possibly one of the most fun live acts you’re ever likely to see. Having been doing their thing for well over thirty years, there is scarcely a more universally well liked band in the entire country, we’d suggest. Having previously played on prestigious stages such as on top of Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert and at 2012’s London Olympic Games Closing Ceremony, Madness’s live show is a perfect fit for the Epsom Downs Grandstands. So how would you like to enter a competition to see the band – complete with all the hospitality trimmings – at Epsom Downs? Yes one lucky winner and three of their nearest and dearest will get to see Madness at Epsom

Yes indeed, this summer one of the nation’s greatest pop institutions embark on the biggest tour of their career. The Grandslam Madness itinerary takes the band, led by singer Suggs, to perform at a selection of the nation’s leading sporting grounds.

SUGGS SAYS...

“It’ll be the greatest tour since Boudacia. We’ll be going across the countryside rampaging and pillaging. We have our people working on designing a chariot - even as we speak,” he laughs.

Live on Thursday 9th July. What’s more, you get a full day of racing beforehand too. The full prize list will include the following: • Bottle of Champagne • Hospitality Badge and Racecourse admission ticket • 3 Course Buffet • Coffee & Mints • Cash / Account Bar Facility • Car parking • Race Card • Betting Couriers

Does that sound like something you’d like to enter? We think so too. To do so, simply visit

theguide2surrey.com/competitions throughout June to enter, complete with full Ts & Cs. A hearty good luck to you all!

“If you had told me this when I was a kid I’d have laughed so loudly my socks would have flown off. Of course it’s remarkable and a privilege to still be doing this funny old business that we do.” What are the qualities that make Madness endure? I think the reason we endure is that we genuinely do enjoy ourselves. The fact that we were friends before this band started is key. I genuinely think the whole spark or art of craft and creativity was a by-product of our friendship. I think that’s what people feel. It’s a genuine experience.

JUNE 2015

MOTORING AHEAD THIS SUMMER The Festival of Speed and Moving Motorshow will take place over the long weekend of 25-28th June at Goodwood in Chichester – a day trip to remember awaits, dear reader…

By Joe Payne

Goodwood Festival of Speed Motor enthusiasts come in numerous forms. There are those that won’t hear a word said against Formula One; others think it’s all about banger racing or drifting; and there are those who merely want to breathe in the beautiful sight of a classic car. We won’t even get into motorbikes vs motorcars. But surely all petrol-heads love one thing – speed. Wherever your automotive allegiances lie – or even if you merely have a penchant for explosive entertainment – the Goodwood Festival of Speed is an absolute must. Arguably the world’s largest car event, the GFS is back for 2015 – and as is the norm with events such as this, it’s going to be the biggest one yet. The theme this year is ‘Flat-Out and Fearless: Racing on the Edge’, paying tribute to the drivers and constructors throughout history that threw caution to the wind in pursuit of victory. So what can you expect?

Well how about the following: •

MotoGP global/super/megastar Valentino Rossi will make his Goodwood debut to celebrate 60 years of Yamaha Motor Company.

Five current Formula 1 teams – including current World Champion constructor Mercedes – to appear in a swish, revamped F1 Paddock.

Seven(!) Mercedes-Benz 300 SLRs – some of the most stunning and powerful cars out there - will be on show to mark 60th anniversary of Sir Stirling Moss’s 1955 Mille Miglia victory.

The incredible 28-litre Fiat S76 – an early attempt to beat the land speed record - to have its first public run for 101 years at Goodwood as part of new category for Edwardian leviathans.

An exciting group of US racers, including NASCAR’s Richard ‘The King’ Petty and a Goodwood debut for drag racing’s godfather Don Garlits.

Derek Bell’s incredible sportscar career marked with special class of at least 12 cars, including the first of his five Le Mans winners – a Mirage GR8.

Motorbike legends Casey Stoner, Freddie Spencer and Kenny Roberts, here to show you their mad riding skills.

Exclusive UK debuts of brand-new machinery from Mazda, Ford and Bentley.

Bonhams - one of the world’s oldest auctioneers – will have a sale to feature a highly sought-after ex-works 1935 Aston Martin Ulster.

A Michelin Supercar Run and largest ever Paddock to feature sensational new supercars. Cue much gawping like teenagers…

Plus lots, lots, lots more!
