Talking to... Palm Reader Based in Guildford and Woking, Palm Reader are Josh, Sam, Josh, Andy & Dan. Having made waves since forming in 2011, they’re causing a stir on the underground with their brand of fast, metallic hardcore punk and their debut album ‘Bad Weather’ has been raved about by the likes of Kerrang!, Rock Sound and Big Cheese. TG2 caught up with them to find out more... How did you meet? RSVP in Woking probably - drinking, talking outside; “Do you like converge”, “Yeah, I like converge”, “Converse”, “Yeah Converse” (Josh, Josh and Sam formed originally with previous guitarist Tom Meadon, now of Empress.)And so the story began… How do you go about writing material? A riff and then a scramble, normally panicked! Seeing & Believing (Are Two Different Things) was finished the evening before a show. It’s all very last minute - the musical equivalent of a ready meal. Does your location and environment play a part in your sound at all? Music definitely has a native flavour -Polish soca (soul calypso, soca) might sound a bit odd. England does heavy music better than anywhere. It’s all in the heart and in the head for us; from a lyrical point of view it’s personal and relatable.

Local hang-out spot? The Garibaldi in Knaphill is a good spot and close to home. Good food, good ale. Enough of an advert? Favourite gig you’ve played? Download Festival - well pretty much all of the festivals we’ve played actually. We had never played any festivals before this year; you get to make a day of it rather than getting to a venue and asking for the Wi-fi code… Collectively, who are your favourite bands? The Bronx or Mastodon. Favourite local venue to play? There’s only two venues locally - Boileroom and The Star. The Boileroom tends to get the bigger artists playing but we’ve put some release shows on at The Star and they’ve been fun - it’s nice and big.

What does the future hold? Loads of shows, a few costume changes… Influences; musically and worldly? we’ve got a UK tour with Devil Sold His Soul Eclectic listening. Everything from Mongolian at the start of October, then we tour throat singing to Justin Timberlake and $#*t Scandanavia with Bleed From Within and our loads of Katy Perry. Everything bar dubstep… good friends Polar. Then, we write a dubstep album, tour with Tatu…the usual. Favourite thing to do? Girlfriends, family and dogs are generally a priority. Certain rituals take place when you’ve spent weeks with 4 guys… Washing is For more InFo vIsIt good fun, as is a change of underwear, fresh WWW.WearepaLmreaDer.banDCamp.Com sheets and a sale at Dixons.

An independent festival featuring some of the biggest names in underground music comes to Bisley Pavilion between 19th and 21st September… Late September would appear to be the time when the festival season has all but ended – but not so. For this is month that the second Undercover Festival returns, with a bigger and better line-up for 2014, featuring over 60 bands. If you’re a fan of pretty much any guitar-based music, this three day extravaganza should excite you… As ever, a bit of background is useful when talking of our local, independent events. Undercover Festival was set up in 2013 due to the lack of GuilFest that year – and particularly the hugely popular Vive Le Rock stage. Local punk, ska and mod fans Andy and Mick aimed to recreate and build on that multi-genre buzz that was the VLR stage – and they achieved it. After the success of that inaugural year, Undercover has stuck with the very principle that gave it its name - undercover by nature of the music policy of this festival and undercover… well, because it is. For you see, having a festival at this time of year is a risky business weather-wise, and as such it takes place indoors at Bisley Pavilion. The clever so-and-so’s.

Call the hotline on

01483 560216

But what of the music? Who will be gracing the stage and make you wish to part with your hard-earned? Some of the finest examples of British underground rock, reggae and ska is who. Headliners include the likes of Gentleman’s Dub Club, Penetration, Spear of Destiny, UK Subs, The Dualers, X Stiff Little Fingers and The Men They Couldn’t Hang – plus a whole lot more. In simple terms – this is a local festival with a national line-up. However, the good people at Undercover Festival are locally-focused individuals – and that’s why we like them. For amongst this rock royalty there will be local bands, local workers and independent stalls. For much like our beloved GuilFest, this is an event that likes to cater to the local area, and the DIY ethic is something we champion here at TGHQ.

So fans of multi-genre underground music – you’ve found your new haven. Undercover Festival takes place at the Bisley Pavilion between the 19th and 21st September. Weekend tickets are £70 in advance, and can be bought by calling the hotline on 01483 560215. More information can be found at undercoverfest.com.

100 YEARS of

MOVIE POSTER HISTORY On Sale at Ewbank’s this Month Some of the most iconic and collectable movie posters will be going on sale at Ewbank’s auctioneers on Tuesday 30th September. Ewbanks, one of the UK’s leading regional auctioneers will be selling almost 700 posters promoting some of the most influential and memorable movies in cinema’s history. The sale will also be broadcast live on the internet with real-time bidding provided by LiveAuctioneers.com and the-saleroom.com, enabling collectors and dealers to participate from all over the world. The posters have been collected over a lifetime by a US collector who was devoted to creating a unique record of Hollywood’s golden era of film. Forming one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of all time, the posters have been consigned to sale, the collector said: “This auction honours such acting greats as Alec Guinness, James Mason, Rex Harrison, Margaret Leighton, Laurence Olivier, Richard Burton and Stewart Granger. “The posters on offer will appeal both to collectors in the 50 to 80 age group with

famous English and American actors and films that they will remember watching in their youth, as well as the new, upcoming generation of collectors who want something more than the usual diet of Star Wars, Hitchcock, Bond, McQueen, and Hammer.” Curating and cataloguing this treasure trove is Ewbank’s Entertainment and Memorabilia specialist Alastair McCrea, who said: “It is a great privilege for Ewbank’s to have been entrusted to sell this collection, the scope of which is unprecedented. Its appeal to collectors on both sides of the Atlantic will be considerable and it is a personal honour for me to be handling it.” For further information on the 30th September Auction, please visit www.ewbankauctions.co.uk or contact the auctioneers on 01483 223101 or antiques@ewbankauctions.co.uk.

Welcome to As community radio pioneers Kane FM 103.7 begin broadcasting from their new home at the University of Surrey’s Student Union this month, we spoke to Mr Fame himself, Ian Handy, about his station’s journey from pirate crew to the latest kids on campus…

K

ane FM’s roots reach back to the late 1980s but truly began life as pirate radio station N Joi FM in the late 90s, broadcasting out of a tiny garden shed in Guildford. In 2011 they were awarded legal status as a not-for-profit community radio station, one of only three pirate stations in the UK to be approved by regulators Ofcom. Since then Kane FM 103.7 has been broadcasting independent, underground bass music to Surrey and Hampshire while gaining a devoted following far beyond the borders of those two

counties. “You can’t go anywhere in the country where someone hasn’t heard of Kane FM,” says Director Ian Handy, aka Mr Fame, with pride.

P

rior to the station’s relocation, Kane FM had been operating out of property owned by the Lockwood Centre in Slyfield, Guildford. But when the premises began to fall short of the station’s requirements, an opportunity presented itself from an idea hatched between Ian and the University of Surrey’s Student Union CEO, Alan Sutherland.

Centre have made to Kane FM, they have been the most incredible allies and friends to us and without them Kane FM wouldn’t be here today. But this new move lifts everybody involved with the project. We’ve gone from a shed, to a glorified shed to a real building with a shiny new studio, professionally built with everything we’ve learnt, on a campus surrounded by

“I’ve known Alan for over fifteen years,” explains Ian. “He had an itch he wanted to scratch and he came to check out the project which had been going for just over two years. He wanted the Union and Kane FM to connect directly, to give young people a megaphone with which to speak their voice. We asked, ‘how could this University on the Hill connect with the community and young people?’ “We can’t understate the contribution that the Lockwood

that Kane FM are coming to the University; it’s a natural fit,” says Alan Sutherland. “But Kane FM and Stag Radio are two very different things. We know they’ll co-exist and we’ll have students get involved with both. They’ll rub along very well together.”

I

n their new home, Ian plans to continue Kane FM’s commitment to serving the community, particularly youth. “We have over 150 volunteers so we’re one of the largest voluntary organisations in Surrey, although we don’t shout about that much. Last year twenty-two kids from all sorts of backgrounds passed through Kane FM, where they have the opportunity to get a certificate from the Arts Awards

with as many young people as possible and make sure music is represented fairly across the FM spectrum. We don’t just serve Guildford; we serve a music community, people who like independent music, who are slightly against the grain. We represent the little guy.”

the new opportunities the location offers. “We’d already installed a live connection between the Rubix club and Kane FM studio, so this will mean far more live broadcasts from the venue in future with more big label events. We hope it would also mean people coming from outside to visit the Union, which has traditionally been quite a closed campus.”

Our Citizens:

Becoming 18 For many, turning 18 is perceived as ‘coming of age’ – when adolescence ends and the adult world opens up before us.

But is turning 18 really significant? Does it actually make a difference to people’s lives, their self-image and their outlook? We sent our intrepid work experience team, Beth Roberts (17) and Justin Rowland (17), out on the streets to put these questions to you, the citizens…

FRANK AND PAT “Drinking wasn’t a big deal because we had been drinking for the past few years and times have changed a lot since then. For us 21 was the bigger landmark. We didn’t really celebrate becoming 18, it was more 21. But being able to vote was a big deal.

ALEX “It kind of was, my birthday was in August so most of my friends were already 18. So it was more of a convenience because we could all go out together. We’d already been doing it for a while but it was difficult. So that was the only thing but apart from that it wasn’t a huge deal. I thought about voting more when the election actually came which was about 2 years after that I think. But at the time I didn’t think too much about that.”

previous which is probably the norm in this country. I looked older anyway so getting drink was easy. Voting wasn’t crucial either.

“Drinking was a big thing I guess but we’d been doing it before that. However it was good to actually go out to the bars and clubs with your mates. Voting was important too.

Natasha and Chloe “It’s not that much of a big deal actually turning 18 but going out and clubbing is definitely a benefit. I think 17 is better because you can learn to drive which gives you more freedom.”

was doing when I turned 18, I remember having a party! Had all my family around. It was good to be drinking and obviously it opened a lot of doors. It was nice to have the choice of voting. Having the option meant I paid a lot more attention to it.”

BARRY “It was a bit of a blur to me I was

just drunk all of the time! Being able to go to bars and clubs legally was a benefit for sure.”

17 SEPTEMBER 2014 COMMUNITY

Our Citizens: IS BECOMING 18 STILL A BIG DEAL? With their own eighteenth birthdays just months away, what do our two reporters think?

NO

YES

Justin

Beth

One of the most significant and important things for people turning 18 is the right to buy alcohol legally. But for many young people in this country that is not a significant change. Yes, it will be easier to get a hold of it but it doesn’t change the fact that, for 15 year olds plus, getting hold of alcohol is already pretty easy, apart from in a pub or bar or similar establishment.

One of the most important responsibilities that arises when you become 18 is the responsibility to vote! We finally get a say in the government, however daunting that may seem. We don’t have to listen to our parents’ opinions about voting, drinking or what we do on a Saturday night we can do whatever we want!

Another so-called benefit of turning 18 is that you’re at the legal age to become ‘free’ from your parents, something many of us have been looking forward to our whole lives. But does that really change anything? You’re still likely to be living under the same roof as them but the only difference is that they can legally chuck you out!! That definitely seems like a negative to me. Furthermore, many people believe that the second you turn 18 is the time you become an ‘adult’ and have to ‘act your age’. I don’t know about you, but most of the adults I see act as if they’re still 18 when most of them are twice, or even four times that! I’m sure I’ll be acting like an immature ‘youth’ for a good few years more, despite being considered an ‘adult’.

“You’re still likely to be living under the same roof as them but the only difference is that they can legally chuck you out!! ‘“

This even extends to buying a house (for all you lucky well-off teens) or getting married! This means that you have the opportunity to start a family, move as far away from your parents as possible or even just run off to Vegas and get hitched! There’s also the prospect of university the chance to become enthralled in a subject and to live it up student style. Alternatively, we can get a variety of jobs that we couldn’t get before (e.g. some pub or bar work) and the minimum wage for 18 year olds is higher than that for younger ages. Never mind paid work, we can even get some work experience that we couldn’t before - this is great if, for example, you want to go into some form of publishing or psychology. I’m looking forward to the easy purchase of alcohol, people treating me like a sophisticated adult and the immense amount of choices I can make.

“THIS MEANS you have the opportunity to start a family, move as far away from your parents as possible or even just run off to Vegas and get hitched!”

Heritage Op Taking place between Thursday 11th and Sunday 14th September, the Heritage Open Days are a celebration of England’s fantastic architecture and culture. While throughout the year much of the country’s historical landmarks are either closed to the general public, or they charge to enter, for these few days you can see many of these treasures for free. Here are a few of our recommendations in the Woking area – more can be found at www.heritageopendays.org.uk. Time to indulge your inner historian…

Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September, 11am – 4pm

Saturday 13th September, 10.30am – 5pm (The Lightbox) and 10am – 4pm (WWF)

An immediate curveball in that Woking Palace’s Open Days occur the week before the others. No matter – you should absolutely take the time to visit one of the area’s most significant landmarks. Woking Palace is only open to the public on a handful of occasions throughout the year.

Something altogether more modern and familyfriendly now – perhaps just what the little ones need so soon after going back to school.

A bit of background is perhaps in order. Having been around in some guise since around 1217, Woking Palace has been frequented by some incredible historical figures. Lady Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry VII, lived in the house from 1466 until at least 1471. It was frequently visited by Henry VII on his accession to the throne, and by his son Henry VIII, who extended and enlarged the Palace between 1515 and 1543. Find out more about this treasured monument at www.woking-palace.org.

Both of these buildings are beautiful in the 21st century sense – located a stone’s throw away from one another, The Lightbox is like a contemporary piece of art, while the new WWF Living Planet Centre is one of the most energyefficient buildings in the country. But while we adults can appreciate these buildings for what they are, they’ve got activities for the little ones too. Pick up a trail at either The Lightbox or The Living Planet Centre receptions and discover what’s inside these beautiful buildings and find some interesting things along the way. Particularly suitable for children aged 4+. To find out more, visit www.thelightbox.org.uk.

The National Memorial to General Gordon of Khartoum gordon’s sChooL, West end Sunday 14th September, tours at 2pm and 3pm A bit of a vested interest here – this scribe attended Gordon’s School. However, this is in fact beneficial, dearest reader – for I can attest to the interesting story of General Gordon and the beauty of some of the buildings. The rec hall, the statue and the chapel are all particular highlights. Gordon was Governor-General of the Sudan and died in Khartoum in 1885, having been sent back after resigning his post in exhaustion five years previously. The word count dictates his tale is too long to be told here, but it is a fascinating story – and one that can be learned by visiting his national memorial. Or, as I called it, school. OUR HISTORY:

The Chobham

Treacle Mines Ever wondered where we used to get wonderful treacle from? How did we find the stuff that gives sweet life to that staple of British puds, the treacle sponge? Well my friends look no further, for here, in the depths of Surrey, we once had a treacle mine of our very own. It may now be defunct, and was actually no such thing, but history shows that at one time the gooey black stuff did once spring from the earth itself.

Modern youngsters are no different from their historical counterparts. Back in the day many youths sought privacy out in the wilds of our fair county; to relax, discuss politics, literature, and of course to dabble in a bit of horizontal hula. Fate it seems is not without a sense of irony as these whippersnappers were to soon find themselves in a situation stickier than even they had hoped for. But even today, in an age where people know the price of everything and the value of nothing, there are those who go rambling for more sensible reasons and the same was true back then. The newly formed 3rd Chobham Troop of Scouts were out in this landscape practising a spot of tracking. But they had another purpose as well. There had been rumours claimed by various red-faced and slightly breathless couples that the ground had oozed treacle. An obvious sign, it was reasoned, of a “Treacle Seam”.

Patrol Leader Billy Whitham and fellow scout Eric Denson were out tracking the treacle when they were startled not by the song of the Lesser Spotted Hoojamaflip, but by the giggles and heavy breathing of those who were young enough not to consider sex as simply a welcome chance to lie down. Curious, Billy and Eric pressed further into the bushes. That was when they made an astonishing discovery. There, revealed in the clearing, was none other than Eric’s sister Ethel. The Boy Scout Patrol Leader had caught his second sister in the act with a blushing suitor, but in the same glance he also saw the elusive treacle leaking out of the ground. Was there such a thing as Natural Treacle? Sadly not. A few years earlier, in 1852, around 8000 soldiers were assembled on Chobham Common so that they could be reviewed before heading off to the Crimean War. For this eight

week jaunt the troops needed a lot of provisions and this included 30 Hogsheads (read: big barrels) each containing 56 gallons of molasses, primarily for use as horse feed. To prevent the molasses fermenting the barrels had to be kept cool so a shallow pit was dug out of the hill known as ‘The Clump’ and there the barrels were buried. Having been approved by Victoria for mass slaughter, disease and dying of frostbite in the name of her empire, the soldiers marched off to war but left the barrels behind. They lay undisturbed until 1901 when, having burst, the treacle started to trickle down the hill. The local villagers claimed they had found a natural source of treacle. Chobham’s ‘Treacle Mines ‘ had been excavated by 1904 and the village’s dreams of being the centre of the world’s Treacle trade were buried instead.

SEPTEMBER 2014

Mum’s the word Thinking About University? It may be a jolly good laugh while you’re there, but applying is arguably the tough bit. Here, independent education consultant Liz Kirk gives some tips… If you’re thinking about going to university in 2015 and are just about to start Year 13, there a few things you’ll need to do this term. If you’re applying to any course at Oxford or Cambridge and for all Veterinary Medicine/ Science, Dentistry or Medicine courses, you’ll need to be a tad more organised and have your application into UCAS by 15th October 2014.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

For all applicants, think about what you want to study at university. Where do your passions and expertise lie? Once this is decided, which universities offer the right sort of courses for you…? The content and structure of a course Just because you like cats doesn’t mean you should be a vet. Would you like it each year? Or does your interest fade the further into it you get?

Core and optional modules What would you have to study and do you like the options? Or does ‘Understanding Governance’ make you shudder?

Opportunities to study abroad Think about how this could benefit your future and career, not just about how much fun it would be…

Reputation of each university Check the league table ranking, and more importantly graduate prospects and student satisfaction with the course you might apply to do. Look at unistats.com!

Visit university open days Go to as many as possible. Be sure to check out your department, and ask lots of questions about the course; refrain from simply looking up local bars.

Distance from home and transport links Could you get back home easily? Do you want to be able to?

How you will be assessed at each stage of the course

Think about first year accommodation

Are you better at exams? Perhaps don’t go for a heavily coursework based choice.

Do people stay on campus at weekends or go home? Where would be a good location? Some university campuses are deserted at the weekends…

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Family

Check out what needs to be completed before and during your application Will there be additional entry tests or submitted work? Will you be interviewed?

Start working on your Personal Statement early Check out on relevant university websites what they want to read from applicants. Your interests and experiences may well be of interest; your views on Justin Bieber, not so much.

What interests you now, why, and what do you want to learn more about, are just some of the points that are good to include If you aren’t sure what to write, do ask for advice! And that goes for all of the above too – if you are unsure about anything, be sure to ask. It’s a big decision…

FAMILY

Following on from these things to consider, start building up a crib sheet of why you want to study your chosen course at university, and why you think you would be the right applicant for a university to select. What interests you now, why, and what do you want to learn more about, are just some of the points that are good to include - if you aren’t sure what to write, do ask for advice! And that goes for all of the above too – if you are unsure about anything, be sure to ask. It’s a big decision…

WHERE TO EAT: Oisi, West Byfleet

By Rich Lee Five years can be a long time in the restaurant game. Unless you’re in the business of crowd-pleasing curries and takeaway Chinese, that is, of which Byfleet is hardly lacking. But for something as relatively niche as Japanese cuisine (niche here in the ‘burbs that is), a restaurant like Oisi that has been serving authentic Japanese food for half a decade stands out as a welcome success. The smiling photographs that line the walls of this restaurant certainly attest to the many friends that Oisi has won over those years, with a few famous faces among them. It’s easy to see why, simply from the exotic yet homely charm of the dining room. Leave the Old Woking Road, descend the spiral staircase and you’ll find yourself in a soothing, intimate space of reds, blacks and brick walls, Japanese prints, soft lighting and the gentle music of a water fountain. Owned and run by the Kwon family, many of the dishes here have arrived by way of Mrs Kwon’s father, a celebrated chef back in Japan. We chose a set course menu to explore a broad sample of Oisi’s offerings, beginning with a bowl of intensely savoury miso soup, followed by a house salad with a vibrant and tangy dressing, bursting with Eastern flavours. Next were chicken gyoja; exquisite little dumplings of meat and vegetables. So far, so light and tasty, we thought, but it became clear that Oisi like to start your meal off gently before building towards something resembling a small banquet. Things got serious when the sashimi arrived; delicate, almost translucent slices

of achingly fresh raw sea bass, tuna and salmon. If the idea of ‘raw’ fish such as this is one you avoid, consider it an acquired taste that you must acquire as soon as possible. With a little curl of pickled ginger, a dab of fiery wasabi and a quick swipe through some soy sauce; this becomes food to make you glow. Light and crispy tempura vegetables and prawns followed and then mains; another generous selection of sashimi and expertly rolled sushi jewelled with roe and a steaming, fragrant bowl of beef tobanyaki; a rich, salty and earthy dish swimming with tender ribbons of meat and vegetables. Desserts are few but an ice cream fried in a tempura shell was a pleasing novelty to round off one of the most satisfying meals we have enjoyed for some time. It’s heartening that Oisi are so confident in their brand that they have their sights set on expanding into franchises, and for those keen to sharpen their own sushi skills they already run a popular cookery school. But for any casual diner seeking one of the healthiest, delicious and enticing cuisines around they’ll find it at this wonderful family restaurant.

SEPTEMBER 2014

Spice up September is a notoriously fickle month; only time will tell if we’ll be toasting an Indian summer or plugging in the slow cooker. In these uncertain times I take comfort in the guaranteed heat provided by something nice and spicy. Of course if we do get lucky and the sun continues to shine just pop the chops on the BBQ and serve with couscous and some cooling yogurt.

Quick cOcOnut curry Serves 2

IngredIents 

2 spring onions

1/2 red chilli 2 inch piece of ginger, peeled and roughly chopped

1 clove of garlic

Juice of 1 lime

A large bunch of coriander

Stir fry oil

50g creamed coconut

100g raw jumbo king prawns

2tbsp frozen peas

6 cherry tomatoes

MetHOd 1. Blend the spring onions, chilli, ginger, garlic, lime juice, coconut and coriander stalks together in a food processor to form a rough paste. 2. Heat 1tsp of stir fry oil in a non stick frying pan, add the paste and stir fry on a medium heat for 3 minutes. 3. Add 200ml of boiling water and simmer for 5 minutes before adding the frozen prawns and cherry tomatoes. Once the prawns have turned pink add the frozen peas and roughly chopped coriander leaves. 4. Serve with ribbon noodles or rice, although this also works very well with the sweet potato mash (sounds odd but give it a go!)

TEST DUMMY: Aussie Rules Football Taking over test dummy duties from Will Knowlton this month is student Justin Rowland, a keen rugby player who was just as keen to try his hand at the mad game known as Aussie Rules Football. I’ve always been the type of person to try different or ‘indie’ sports (if there is such a thing). I’ve played ice hockey, baseball, water polo and even a bit of BMX racing. So when the opportunity arises to try something new I jump at the chance. As I’m sure many of you are aware, there is actually more

kicking around a red coloured oval ball, but the fact that they were wearing vests and shorts. Apparently this is the normal attire for the sport in Australia… After being greeted by the team (a large team – 18 a side) I already felt as if this was the kind of sport for me; particularly as this is a full contact sport. As a keen rugby player I knew I would get to grips with that part very easily. Aussie Rules is best described to us northern hemisphere folk as a mix between football and rugby. The goal is to kick the ball through two big posts at either end of a huge oval, you can run with the ball as long as you

“It involves a lot of kicking and an awful (and I mean awful) lot of running.” than one type of football going on in Surrey at the moment. As well as ‘American’ football there is also a game called ‘Australian Rules Football’, known as ‘footy’ or perhaps most popularly ‘Aussie Rules’. Curious, I went to try it out. When I arrived at the 3G pitches of Surrey Sports Park, the first odd thing I noticed wasn’t the fact that they were

bounce it up to yourself roughly every 5 steps or you can kick the ball to another teammate who, if he catches it, can gain a ‘mark’ which is effectively a free kick.

Work experience student Justin, kangaroo jumps...

There is no offside so everyone can pretty much run where they like, and if someone is running with the ball a defender is well within his rights to shoulder barge - or full on tackle- the player to get the ball. The session was just over an hour and a half long and I must admit - I was knackered. But was it worth it? Most definitely. I hadn’t had so much fun in a long time. So if you are a fan of any type of team sport, and enjoy a level of organised madness, you’ve got to try Aussie Rules Football! I know you’ll be just as hooked as I was…

If you want to try it out yourself get down to Surrey Sports park at 7:30pm on a Thursday evening for training which Is located on the 3G pitches located behind Starbucks.

yOuR CluB WOKing fC Now that the 2014/15 seasoN is uNderway, we thought it was high time we gave you some iNformatioN about your local football team… where they Play: The Kingfield STadium (CapaCiTy: 6036)

how did last seasoN go?

Player to watch iN 2014/2015:

Really quite well – nowhere near relegation, and at several points pushing for a play-off place. Considering Woking were only promoted from the Conference South two seasons previously, this shows considerable progress.

Scott Rendell. The 27 year old striker has been prolific, scoring 12 goals in 21 league games since his move from Luton Town was made permanent. Having had an unsettled career until now, Scott has found a rich vein of form, and he’ll be one of the key men helping Woking FC to push on.

what are exPectatioNs for this seasoN? While Woking were close to league football in their 90s heyday, they are dark horses to reach the promised land this season. Woking have the facilities and fanbase for league football, so fingers crossed. Still, with a balanced squad and an impressive manager, a play-off push would be considered a success. Talking of which…

maNager: Garry Hill. He’s been at Woking FC for over three and a half years now, which has seen the club promoted and then become an established Conference side. Certainly the right man in charge, fans will be hoping for even bigger improvements.

HOW WOKING IS WORKING FOR BUSINESS

As Woking continues to reinvent itself as one of the most exciting places to do business in the South East, Rich Lee spoke to Woking Borough Council’s Matt Peachey to discuss the town’s ongoing growth… What is your role at the Council? I’m the Economic Development and Promoting the Borough Manager; a bit of a long title but my main role is to deliver the economic development strategy for Woking; a five year plan to improve the local economy and make Woking one of the South East’s premier business locations. When did the Strategy take effect and what are its key aims? It became effective in 2012. There are four key strategies

that we’re aiming to deliver: improving the attractiveness and ambiance of the town centre; developments like Victoria Square, the new market, Commercial Way and bringing in new retailers and restaurants; it’s a key part of the strategy to make sure Woking is an attractive place to live, work and shop. The second is attracting more companies into the area; two recent examples being WWF and Mustang Engineering. Thirdly, we engage with existing businesses, companies like Yum, McLaren and Saab Miller, making sure we have a good relationship so that they stay and expand across the Borough. The fourth one concerns creating opportunity and removing obstacles to growth. Things like improving the transport infrastructure; we’ve just applied for £7.5 million to widen Victoria Arch and to improve the facilities in and around Woking Train Station. We’ve also created

an Incubation Centre at Export House to help start-up businesses. How is Woking a better place for business now than it was before the Economic Strategy was implemented? The location itself has a number of strengths that existed since before the strategy: a 25 minute connection to London, a skilled population base and a good choice of properties as well. But what we’ve done to improve Woking as a place for business in the last few years has been to radically improve the town centre, to make it much more attractive for employers who are looking to locate or continue their presence in the area. And to support business, we have programmes such as Start Up Woking which provides advice to companies in their first three years, we have a web business portal, Woking Works, and we’ve worked with

BUSINESS

TheGuide2Surrey.com/Business

Connect2 Innovation to run a series of knowledge based business seminars. How does the strategy affect struggling areas like Sheerwater? Sheerwater and Maybury are key areas for WBC and our partners. Yes, they have been ranked as two of the most deprived areas in Surrey, but that actually masks the fact that there are a lot of opportunities there. There’s in the region of 1.2million square feet of industrial and office space; there’s Asda and other

businesses moving there on the back of the new access road, creating jobs. And on top of that there’s the ma jor housing regeneration scheme which aims to build upwards of 1000 new homes in the area. The strategy really will uplift the whole area. What are you most excited about for Woking over the next few years? Woking’s reputation has not always been positive in the past, but with the improvements to the environment in the town centre and beyond, I think Woking will become a lot

more successful. As people recognise that it is a good town to live and work in, it’s going to become a very vibrant place. I think we’re doing all the right things, on the whole.

WOKING’S NEW COVERED MARKET is Ready for Business Featuring 15 purpose built permanent kiosks for a range of quality traders, the state-ofthe-art Market Walk which opens this month boasts new granite paving, modern lighting and a refurbished, clutter-free pedestrian route. There are additional stalls that will change with the seasons as well as seating for shoppers to relax while eating some of the artisan food on offer at the market.

Counsellor Gary Elson, Portfolio Holder for Public Markets, said: “Creating a covered high quality, diverse and vibrant seven-day market in the heart of Woking Town Centre has been an aspiration of Woking Borough Council for a number of years. “Working with market specialists, Quarterbridge, we have created a quality tenant mix of both existing and contemporary traders that reflect modern consumer needs.” Some of those traders include artisan bakers Slice, the Chelsea Flower Shop, P & P Fruits and Afro-Caribbean food stall Berterny Intercontinental Foods. Stallholders at Market Square were invited to bid for places in the new Market Walk and had to meet the council’s criteria for “professionalism, a sound

financial position and the need to work with the management team in place.” Some long-established stallholders have expressed disappointment when they learned that they had been unsuccessful, despite their many years doing business at the Market Square site, although the Council say they are working to secure new locations for them. Traders currently at Market Square’s have until 31 December 2014, after which the area will reduce in preparation for preparatory works for Victoria Square to commence.

For more information and to enquire about lettings at the new Market Walk call 01206 710 999 or email woking@quarterbridge.co.uk.

INTRODUCING THE BMW i8: The Clean & Green Speed Machine

By Joe Payne The BMW i8 is a revolutionary car – and Vines of Guildford are one of the few dealerships to stock it. Read on to find out about the most important car of 2014…

A

s I accelerated down the A3 with frightening speed, it became abundantly clear what a work of genius the new BMW i8 actually is. For this is a fully hybrid sports car that looks positively space age; scissor doors that remind you of ‘that’ DeLorean; and it possesses an engine barely bigger than that of my T reg Fiesta, yet it’s capable of 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds. Moreover, it’s as easy a vehicle to drive as I’ve ever experienced. Put simply: we have to tell you about the future…

A

s one of the elite group of BMW dealers in the UK who stock the i series – the brand’s visionary electromobility range - Vines of Guildford are offering one of the most desirable cars on the market today. Its striking looks – aerodynamic and lowset, with swept edges and the aforementioned doors – coupled with that ferocious acceleration and limited top speed of 155mph means that the i8 was always going to prove popular. That, and its appearance in the latest ‘Mission Impossible’ film of course…

B

ut what makes this a truly revolutionary vehicle is its sheer efficiency – and we mean that in literally every sense. Unbelievably, from conception to hitting the showroom, the i8 is BMW’s shortest project to date. Produced in their carbon neutral plant in Leipzig, it boasts some remarkable statistics. Emissions clock in at a miniscule 49g/km and (should you use the hybrid technology correctly) there is the potential to get 134.5mpg - and you can cruise around in batteryonly mode for 23miles before the engine charges her up again. To put it another way, this incredibly fast sports car is so eco-friendly that you won’t need to pay tax or the congestion charge.

B

MW, then, have taken hybrid technology a huge step forward – and the Vines BMW dealership in Guildford have secured a real coup in stocking this car. In the future the i8 will, in this scribe’s humble opinion, go down as a landmark when considering the capabilities of hybrid technology. So if you’ve got a spare hundred grand to spend…

ME

SEPTEMBER 2014

‘Me’

Dominique Frazer VENUE OWNER VISONARY

LOCA L P E O P L E , E X T R AO R DI N A RY L I VE S . Who are you, what do you do? I run The Boileroom, Guildford’s alternative music venue. What are the best bits about the job? Working with creative people and being my own boss to a certain extent. I love seeing people enjoy the shows we put on and generally being involved in an industry that is constantly evolving and changing. I’m lucky that I get to listen to music all day. How did you start out in the live music business? I was running a music magazine called Spill a few years ago and we started putting on live shows in Southampton, London, Oxford and the back room of The Star in Guildford. From there we thought wouldn’t it be great if Guildford had a designated music venue…and here we are. It’s The Boileroom’s 8th Birthday on the 27th September, what have been the highlights over the years? That’s tough. I see every event like having a child, like a family and I love all of them separately for different reasons. We’ve had some amazing acts come through here including Abraham Wilson (who died recently), we’ve had Kele from Bloc Party, Peter Hook, Foals, Noisettes, Ed Sheeran…it goes on. For me personally, Hugh Cornwall from The Stranglers was a definite highlight, I was a proper fan girl for the night. If you were in a band what sort of music would you play? Instrument of choice? I would definitely be a Bass player and it would probably be something where I could scream or shout. We had The Marmozetes in last night and her voice is amazing, which was kind of like a mix of Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’s and Placebo-esque. I wouldn’t want a heavy hardcore band, just something with front.

Who would be on your wish list ‘dead or alive’ to play The Boileroom? Hmmm…Janis Joplin, Muddy Waters and probably PJ Harvey…and Billie Holiday…oh and Bjork. Thoughts on Guildford? I was born in Guildford and my Nanna used to have the fruit and veg shop here in the 1920’s and my Great Grandfather was a signalman at London Road Station, my mum went to the very first Guilfest when it was a folk festival, so my family have been in Guildford or generations and I have such a connection with the town. I love it here and I think the people make it. Favourite spot to relax? I really love it up at Pewley Downs, just being able to see all the countryside and forest. What do you get up to in your free time? I like going to exhibitions. I’m a big fan of playing squash and we’re trying to get a league set up here at The Boileroom. I listen to the radio at home and like to listen to a lot of vinyl. I love it.

For all of your alternative live music and cultural needs, visit The Boileroom at 13 Stoke Fields, Guildford GU1 4LS. Tel: 01483 440022 or Visit www.theboileroom.net
