Letter from the Founder and CEO This year has been unprecedented and full of disbelief and tragedy. Although we all were impacted in some way—whether setback, loss, or hardship—2020 allowed each individual to self-reflect and appreciate the gift of life. God continues to provide and watch over us. As we accept our new normal and impart positive light to those around us, I am hoping that the launch of The Heat Seekers Magazine will help to bring positive vibes to everyone. As the Founder and CEO of this publication, I want 2021 to be a year of reflection and positivity. As you read each article on how each artist has made it through the trials of 2020, congratulate and appreciate their willingness to overcome. I will call 2021 our “new beginning.” As we begin the process of healing, restoring, and evaluating all around us, let’s remember to still celebrate one another. Without God, this magazine would not be possible. Without hope, I would have stopped midway in the year. Without courage, I would have dropped everything and settled for second-best. Instead, I decided to use my gift of spreading joy and love and compress it into colorful pages and images of individuals that I honor and adore. Thanks for joining me on this new journey of journalism; I wish you peace, happiness, joy, and prosperity for 2021. Remember: “Quitters never overcome, and overcomes never quit!” Blessings to all of you!

Glowing Up With Black Girl Candle Company Interview by La Sheera Lee

Cassandra Durham has always been known for her wit, sass, and humor. Now, this dynamo is also known as a candle maker. Yes, Black Girl Candle Company is ready to help you glow up. Cassandra hand makes each and every candle. She literally pours her heart and soul into each candle. She wants to create peaceful and soothing experiences for her customers, Let;s take a peak into Black Girl Candle Company. La Sheera Lee: What inspired you ? Cassandra Durham: I was inspired to create BGCC by several events. The first – Seeing black women in the streets yelling, screaming and marching after the death of George Floyd and our voices still not being heard. I wanted to create something that could sooth the hearts and minds of black women. But also speak to our strength, resilience and tenacity. LL: You are an author, advocate and elder. How has creating candles added to the fullness of your life? CD: I look at the candles as an extension of ministry. I think we all want to love and feel love and to be seen by others. Creating these scent experiences for our clients allow them to take a moment and realized they are loved, cherished, and honored by God. It is at times I think a defining moment for people to sit still and take stock of their lives and perhaps troubling situations and create viable solutions to overcome their challenges. LL: How do you hope customers feel? CD: We strive to create products that warm your heart while relaxing your soul. Established in 2020 our mission is to provide handcrafted candles which represent the full spectrum of the black girl experience in America. BGCC is not just another candle, it is a whole mood. Whether you need soft, subtle, sensual scents or fun, flirty aroma’s Black Girl Candle Company has a scent experience waiting for you. LL: What emotional or spiritual rewards CD: The emotional and spiritual rewards are numerous. I find great joy in helping people reignite their faith in God. There are times when people come to our store just to bask in the peace of the place. This I not only find fascinating, but it balances my soul as well. LL: Tell us about your subscription boxesCD: BGCC has a monthly faith-based subscription box. Each box is carefully curated with the heart, and soul of the receiver in mind. Our boxes also contain a monthly faith building teaching. It is also a way for our clients to be the first to receive all our new innovative products and scents. LL: We heard that you have products that cater to me. What has been the response? CD: I am a woman who loves a great smelling man and so it was a natural fit to add products such a beard balm, beard oil and body butter for men to our line. I love it when men use our

products and tell us how much their beard has grown and/or how much softer their facial hair has become. LL What’s next for Black Girl Candle Company? CD: Growing our home fragrance line and incorporating more of our one-of-a-kind scents. We would love to open a second location and provide more candle classes as well. The Amen Corner-Vol10 by Nayomi Charnelle

“Most Beautiful” by Chandler Moore The lyrics of this song transcends us from Hearing about His greatness to actually witnessing His greatness. This song is the ultimate “I Love You Lord” song. The chorus “Dearest Father, closest friend, most beautiful” is a melodic in-depth conversation with the All-Mighty. When listening, you feel a certain euphoria, almost like you and God are sharing an intimate moment where you are the only one He sees at the moment. The song speaks of dwelling in the presence of God and laying at His feet. It’s the perfect song of surrender and obedience. The Bible says that there is nothing that can ever separate God’s love from His children, Chandler Moore delivers a stellar performance using his amazing voice that is raspy yet soulful at the same time. He plays the acoustic guitar as the choir sings in the background making a joyful noise. If you’ve never prayed before, this is a song that says it all. It encompasses prayer for giving thanks, asking for forgiveness, and praising God all at the same time.

Singer-Songwriter Interview by The Heat Seekers The Heat Seekers: Tell us a little bit about yourself? Bailey Elora: My name is Bailey Elora and I’m a singer-songwriter from Denver, Colorado. My favorite food is potatoes, in any form, but mainly mashed. I am 21 and still only have my learners permit, because driving scares me for no realistic reason. I absolutely detest talking about myself (which is VERY ironic, because I’m a performer so it’s kinda the whole job, and I’m literally doing an interview about myself at this very moment???). I am also an avid coffee/tea drinker with a collection of 30+ mugs. THS: How long have you been a performing artist? BE: It’s honestly been so long that I can’t remember, but I think I’d say around 7 years. THS: What made you decide to be serious about music? BE: I’ve always been serious about music, if I were to say otherwise would feel like an insult to myself and all the effort and love I put into it. I think it’s better to ask when I decided to make it a career, which would be when I was around 16. I saw tons of performers and artists out there doing music for a living and thought that’s an option??? I can do that as a JOB??? Because genuinely the idea never occurred to me until that point, I didn’t realize that you could have a job that wasn’t your typical 9 to 5 and once I did… I think that’s when everything changed for me. THS: Which people have had the most influence on your music career and why? BE: First off, my dad because he’s the “man behind the curtain”, so to speak. He’s my driver, my manager, and soooooo many other things… Basically he does everything. He’s also my biggest supporter (except when he has opinions on my music… I RESPECTFULLY ignore those). The “second” would probably be, all the people that have doubted me and my art, because I truly think you are nothing without your haters pushing you forward. THS: What would you say is the #1 key to success in the music industry? BE: THICK SKIN!

10

You HAVE to be able to use the insane amount of metaphorical bricks thrown at you to build the stairs you use to climb higher or you’ll never evolve into a bigger and better artist. Mean THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

words and negativity will always follow you, you just have to learn how to work with them. THS: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps? BE: Work hard, always, but allow yourself to enjoy it. Sure, it’s important to care about what you do and to not slack off if you want to get anywhere with it, but it’s important to take care of yourself and your mental health as well. I’ll be honest, I’m not always the best at that, but I continue to try to be because I know I’ll be a better artist (and person) if I take care of myself. THS: What does a typical day in your week look like? BE: I would love to say, it’s all music all the time, but the reality is that I have a day job. I get up, normally before the sun, work 8 hours and come home. Then I take a shower, a nap and then the craziness starts. Most nights I have SOMETHING going on. Band practices, writing sessions, important emails (and sometimes interviews like this one). I also have non-music things like Chiropractor visits, grocery shopping, meal prepping, hanging out with friends, concerts… etc. Obviously, I’m a little short on down time, but when you really enjoy what you do, it’s not so bad.

THS: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business? BE: I’m fueled by Boba and my innate need to prove people wrong. I love showing how willing I am to work for what I want and that I won’t cower to a rough situation…but I’m also human, so that’s not always how it goes down. Sometimes, I simply have to take a break. I buy a Boba and spend some time unwinding, just let myself be free for a little bit. One of my favorite quotes is, “Just because they can carry the load, doesn’t mean it’s not heavy” and I think that’s really important to remember. THS: What’s next for you? New music? BE: My band and I are continuously writing music, so we always have something new. We released our single “DRUNK RN” ft. BROTH3R in September, which we absolutely love. Most recently though, we finished recording a new song at The Spot Studios (in Evergreen, CO) and it’s got this sort of more gentle sound that I think everyone will really like. There’s no release date yet, but It will probably be out some time in early 2022. Please list your website and/or your social media platforms. All of my social media is under @baileyelora, but can also be found here: https://linktr.ee/baileyelora THS: What’s better, singing karaoke or singing in the shower? And Why? BE: While I do LOVE a good karaoke session, I’m more of a shower singing girl because it’s one of the best places to write and try out new music… I can also cry along to All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) without ANY JUDGMENT, so there’s that. THS: If you could open for any artist or band, who would you choose? And why? BE: Hands down, Halsey! Because I love her. THS: What’s your all time favorite song lyric? BE: You Make Me Smile by Blue October “My words, they pour Like children to the playground Children to the playground” THS: Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you? BE: Hmmm… well I’m a Type One Diabetic, not sure if that’s very interesting, but now you know!

Church as Usual, Same Ole Same Ole by DAViD SPENCER Some

things are seasonal, like trench coats. I love them, and I look forward to pulling them out for the winter, but it’s not to be worn year-round. Wearing it in the summer could be dangerous and cause me to faint. It’s perfect for the winter season. The coat will eventually need to be retired altogether. Nothing lasts forever. I will never forget how it felt. I may even look back at old pictures to help me remember how good I looked. But if it’s worn or torn, it should be retired. Most practically, some things we do for ministry’s sake have become routine. We haven’t revamped anything. The approach has been the same forever. Some moments are non-effective placeholders on the program. We do it because we’ve always done it that way. What was great for a season is now awkward to watch. Imagine me in the hottest part of the summer wearing that trench coat. Even if the coat were nice, you would only notice me sweating profusely, causing you to wonder if I had lost my mind. Why is David wearing a trench coat in the summer? “I got many compliments last winter” wouldn’t change how you saw me. I wonder what questions people are asking from the pews at your ministry. How do they see you? I often say school and government have looked the same forever. Sadly I am now adding churches to the list. Before you get deep, I know God is the same and never changes. I am not talking about God; I am talking about church culture. Some churches are stuck in time, holding on to traditions they do not fully understand or explain. “That’s how mom and dem always agreed done it.” “If it was good enough for them, it is good enough for me.”

Some traditions are not even applicable to this time. I never raise my finger while exiting service because I am not a slave that needs permission from my master to move around. Some churches (except for personnel changes) look, smell, and sound the same way now, as they did generations ago. Many are unwilling to explore doing something differently—the result, ineffective ministries and declining attendance. Churches are dying. Some are already dead and don’t even know it. Pause. Disclaimer: You have to do this, so people don’t make assumptions and get offended. The disclaimer- I am not writing about your specific ministry or mine. I am just thinking and reflecting and hope you’ll do the same. If you think of your ministry when reading this, do something about it. This could be considered a super late post. While serving as Music Director of a ministry in Ohio years ago, my friend Ric and I were doing some ministry planning, and we discussed being willing to try new things in the churches we led. If something didn’t work, we’d adjust. “Not trying something because we’ve never done it that way,” we it would not work for us. Ric said we have to be careful not to keep doing something forever that was only purposed for that season. The sentiment stuck with me forever. We agreed not to hold onto something because it was great for a season. If its season were up, we would let it go, making room for the next level of glory. Some things only need a moment to rest- its season may circle back. Trends re-trend. In all aspects of our lives (professional, spiritual, personal, etc.), we must be willing to adjust and stop giving energy to things that have outlasted their season. Revamp and move on. Embrace change.

Finding Success Through Faith-Spiritually, Personally, and Professionally Interview by Lissha Sadler of Hardcore Grind

An Intimate Conversation With Kimberla Lawson Roby. Kimberla Lawson Roby is a New York Times bestselling author, speaker, and now a podcast host. She has sold nearly 3 million copies, and she has written 28 books, including her new faith-based, nonfiction book “The Woman God Created You To Be: Finding Success Through Faith-Spiritually, Personally, and Professionally.” She is a trailblazing pioneer in African-American Literature, and she is also the 13th NAACP Image Award Winner for Outstanding Literary Work—Fiction, a recipient of the 2017 SOAR Radio Trailblazer of Honor Award, the 2017 Southwest Florida Reading Festival Distinguished Author Award, the 2017 AAMBC Christian Fiction Author of the Year award, the 2014 AAMBC Female Author of the Year award, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013, African-American Literary Awards Show (New York, NY) Female Author of the Year award, the Blackboard Fiction Book of the Year Award in 2001 for CASTING THE FIRST STONE, and in 2001, Kimberla was also inducted into the Rock Valley College Alumni, Hall of Fame (Rockford, IL). And in August 2020, she was named by USA Today as one of the 100 black novelists you should read. “What I enjoy most about my writing style is that whether I’m writing fiction or nonfiction, I write using my own voice and in a conversational manner.”

In terms of preventing burn-out, I did eventually experience that a few years ago, which was the reason I took a step away from everything for a while.

Lissha Sadler: A black woman who can write is powerful. What does the power of your pen mean to you? Kimberla Lawson Roby: For me, writing is a wonderful blessing, as it allows me to express my thoughts and creativity in a way that I wouldn’t be able to do otherwise. My hope and prayer, too, is that everything I write will help as many women as possible, in at least one way or another.

LS: Why do you write? KR: I have always loved writing, even as a child, and then once I wrote my first book and readers began telling me that they could relate their own lives to the storyline or that they’d been helped or inspired by it, I decided from then on that I would always write about real-life social issues, hoping I could help at least one woman or many. For my nonfiction book, I wrote that for the same reason.

LS: How does your creativity flow? How do you avoid burning out? KR: For my fictional stories, I always begin by deciding what topics I want to center them on. Then, I spend days mentally creating and getting to know my characters. From there I outline the first 15 – 20 chapters, and then I begin writing them. For my nonfiction book, even though there were no fictional characters or storylines, the overall process was pretty similar, but for the nonfiction title, I also had to share so much of my own life throughout the entire book.

LS: You are a very accomplished author, and now you have a new podcast. What made you create a podcast? KR: The same as God placed the book on my heart to write The Woman God Created You to Be, He also gave me the idea for the podcast—The Woman God Created You to Be. So as it turns out, the book is now the companion piece to the podcast, and my prayer is that each weekly episode will inspire, encourage, and motivate women to become the best they can be in all areas of their lives. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

17

LS: You have become a pioneer for African-American Authors, how does that make you feel? KR: Although I have been writing for 25 years, I don’t think I’ve ever considered myself to be a pioneer. But if my writing career has helped encourage even one person to become a writer or to follow their purpose and dreams, I am so very grateful for that. LS: Your latest book “The Woman God Created You To be” is a change from what you normally write. Why did you choose to write a nonfiction book? Tell us about the vision behind this book. KR: A few years ago, I woke up very early one morning with this urging to write my first nonfiction book, and although I tried my best to ignore it, I soon realized that this was a calling God had placed on my life. Still, I continued writing fiction, but no matter how many days, months, and years passed, the calling and the idea for the book wouldn’t go away. So toward the end of 2017, I decided to submit to my publisher the final book in my Reverend Curtis Black series, take a break, and begin outlining and writing The Woman God Created You to Be. Then in terms of the vision behind the book, the overall theme completely coincides with my overall purpose which is to help women become all God created them to be. LS: If you could change anything about the literary industry what would it be? KR: I would broaden the scope of advertising and promotion so that readers could become much more aware of all books and not just those that are written by bestselling authors. LS: What advice do you have for aspiring authors? KR: 1) Make sure writing is your God-given purpose. 2) Write something you feel a lot of passion for. 3) Find your own voice and write straight from your heart. 4) Write every single day, even if only a paragraph or a page. 5) Before submitting your work to an agent or publishing company or before self-publishing it, always have your manuscript edited by a professional content editor, copyeditor, and proofreader. LS: What will your top priorities be moving forward in your career? KR: I will be focusing on creating content for my podcast and releasing weekly episodes.

‘My Soul Cries Out’ Interview by King Brooks

I have known Ms. Joyce for about 5 years and it has been a pleasure to watch her grow as a author and writer. That’s why I had to interview her for my December 2021 column. She just released her new novel ‘My Soul Cries Out’ in October of the year. So sit back and enjoy my interview with her. King Brooks: Who is Joyce A. Brown as a person and as an author? Joyce Brown: I am a retired business owner (community researcher, grant writer, evaluator), mother of two and grandmother of two. I attended Bradley University, earning a bachelor’s degreein Psychology and a master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling. I earned a PhD in Research, Measurement, and Evaluation from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Prior to owning my business for 10 years, my 40-year career was spent in human services organizations. I worked as a rehabilitation counselor, college/university counselor, family counselor, agency director and foundation program officer. In 2011, I ended up in a hospital emergency room with heart failure as a result of overwork and a doctor’s misdiagnosis. My doctor said I had asthma; the emergency team diagnosed congestive heart failure. Six months later, I had a cardio defibrillator placed in my heart. The stipulation was that I could not return to my highly stressful life or to work. You can read my journey to restored health in an anthology produced by Vanessa Miller. Love. Hope. Faith. Stories that uplift, inspire, and enlighten. I am currently “in between” assignments. I was caregiver for my mother from 2013 until her death in July 2021. During that time, I focused on improving my writing skills. Currently, I have seven or eight manuscripts that need to be dusted off, reviewed, and readied for publication. KB: Tell us about your new novel ‘My Soul Cries Out?’ JB: My Soul Cries Out begins with a violent murder, immediately pulling the reader in to discover who and why. This tale of the tragic death of a young mother helps us see the impact of domestic violence on our families and communities, and the hypocrisy of apathetic police departments. The reader is guided through the days after, making youempathize with the victim’s spirit as she demands justice. Strong characters and a fast-moving

20

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

plot make this an easy read. If you like a good love story or a great mystery, this is a book you do not want to miss. KB: Where did the idea for this story come from? JB: Throughout my career, I have been fascinated by the lives of women and girls. So much of the complexity of their lives does not get told in romantic fiction or biographies. My stories begin with a fictional character either asking a question or demanding I write about issues I care about. In the case of My Soul Cries Out, the lack of a realistic plan to investigate and solve murders in Battle Creek, MI a smalltown where I resided from 1987 to 2013 felt like a betrayal to the citizens. Domestic partner abuse was one cause for murder. The other was the proliferation of drugs. At one point, there were over fifty (50) unresolved cases. Families of the victims formed an organization and drew attention to the ever-increasing number of murders. There were multiple issues involved including witness intimidation, persons killed in the commission of a crime, drug deals gone wrong, and domestic violence.

KB: How long did it take you to write ‘My Soul Cries Out?’ JB: The book took about a year to write. However, it sat around for two years because I was not sure I wanted to publish it because the “spirit of Anna Marie” was problematic to sort out. I eventually decided to let go and tell her story. KB: How different is ‘My Soul Cries Out’ from your other books and stories? JB: This book is darker and more intense than my other books. There is not a happily ever after resolution to this story. However, Anna Marie’s spirit is fighting for vindication and to help other women understand the consequences of misplaced trust in the wrong people. KB: What do you want readers to take away from ‘My Soul Cries Out?’ JB: Domestic partner violence is a pattern of abusive or coercive behavior used to gain and maintain power over another person. Most domestic violence is psychological abusewhich does not leave physical evidence, except despair, depression, and rage. The black eyes and broken bones come next. One in four women and one in ten men experienced contact physical violence and stalking by an intimate partner in 2017. The National Coalition of Women Against Domestic Violence reported victims are murdered by the person they know, love, or are in relationship with. According to the Violence Policy Center, which uses Bureau of Justice statistics in annual reports about female homicide victims, three women are murdered every day in the U.S. by current or former romantic partners. KB: When did the writing bug hit you? JB: For the past forty years, I have authored short stories for my consumption, newspaper editorials as part of my advocacy and youth development articles. Authoring a novel was on my bucket list. Those early unfinished projects are still lying around. If COVID lingers around for another year, they might get dusted off and published. Writing is therapeutic. Twist’d Dreams and My Moment My Turn were published by a small vanity press company. I learned a valuable lesson about publishing during that experience. Since then, I’ve self-published What You Can Get Away With, Getting Away With Everything, Winter’s Lament.

I have authored short stories for four anthologies: Baring It All: The Ins and Outs of Publishing; Signed, Sealed and Delivered: I’m Yours; Love, Hope, Faith: stories that uplift, inspire, and enlighten; and All I Want for Christmas. KB: What keeps you coming back for more? (i.e., writing, telling stories) JB: The tipping point for writing down my stories came when my sister, Cheryl, was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer in 2004. I cut back on work to become her caregiver. As her illness progressed, the two of us spent our time together. Our first project was finishing her dissertation. She had already completed the research and had written the first chapters of the document prior to her first surgery. From her hospital bed or sitting up on the couch at home, Cheryl dictated, and I wrote down her words. She received her EdD in Education from the University of Illinois in 2005. After that she encouraged me to write, to tell my stories. I started novel writing during the last year of her life as we moved between doctors’ visits, chemotherapy, and radiation. Cheryl ‘s death is what finally pushed me out of my wanna be writer to writer. She is my muse. KB: How can readers contact you and find your books? JB: Readers can find my books on Amazon in both eBook and print or contact me directly. Website: www.livethedreampublishers.com Social Media Links Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/joycebrown.73345048 Twitter: @livethedreampublishers Instagram: @PublishersLive KB: What can we expect from you in the future? JB: More novels.

Unbeknownst to her, this uncontrollable energy granted her the blessing of winning several awards and the title of Award-Winning Book Ambassador. MidnightAce is the founder and CEO of MidnightAce Book Bar. The book bar was created to provide a comfortable, lounge type of environment to enjoy literary adventures, virtual wine tasting, book pairings, and more. We caught up with MidnightAce to learn about the book bar experience and her podcast show. Let’s Chat with MidnightAce Book Bar Angela Anderson: Tell us how you got started in podcasting. MidnightAce: One of my favorite things to do is to connect with authors and readers to discuss books and the literary aspects of books. When the pandemic started it forced us all to adjust the way we communicated. I found that this adjustment worked out well for the Book Bar because it allowed me to use my platform to virtually connect readers and authors. As a blogger, I was able to continue to bring the same content with an added flare. AA: Why did you start your podcast show? MA: I saw an opportunity to enhance what I was already doing with my written content and turned it into a virtual online experience. Starting my show has allowed me to enjoy the best of two worlds. In addition to my live “Books & Booze” literary show, I co-host a radio broadcast, Iris Moments. It airs every Wednesday on CruzIncRadio (www.cruzincradio.com). AA: What makes the “Books and Booze” show unique? MA: At MidnightAce Book Bar our niche is pairing a good book with great wine. We believe “Wine Makes a Good Book Great.” I mean, who does not like discussing a book with their favorite beverage and author?

AA: Share some of the behind-the-scenes of what is involved with making a book bar show. MA: For someone watching a live show, they might not know that there are several things that happen behind the scenes before it’s lights, camera, action. After our guest is scheduled, I go into research mode, preparing the graphics, and marketing for the actual show. It is important to me that the guest on the show feels comfortable and have everything needed for a positive experience at the book bar. AA: Which aspect of your podcast show is the most fun for you? MA: I actually like the entire process. As a creative, I enjoy seeing it all come together. Whenever I have the opportunity to speak with an author about their work, I am transcended into the world they’ve built. AA: What can a viewer or listener expect when they tune into a MidnightAce Book Bar podcast show? MA: A viewer or listener can definitely expect to be entertained as well as informed. It is an experience for both the author and those in the listening audience. AA: Since it is the holiday season, what do you enjoy most about this time of year? MA: The holiday season for me is a time for family and reflection, readjusting and preparation for the new year. I enjoy the additional time with family that this time of the year brings. AA: Where and when can people listen to your podcast show? MA: The Books and Booze show is Friday nights at 7:00 pm CST. Given the name of the show; “Books & Booze,” I think Friday night is an appropriate day and time to enjoy the book bar. AA: How can people stay connected with you and find your show? MA: I am very active on social media. They can find me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at MidnightAce Book Bar. They can also connect with me via my website at www.midnightacebookbar.com. The Books and Booze show can currently be viewed on Facebook via Facebook Live. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Acclaimed Singer-Songwriter & Producer Interview by The Heat Seekers (Teresa B. Howell & David R. Navarro)

The Heat Seekers: Tell us about yourself? Who is Steven Russell Harts? Steven Russell Harts: Steven is a son of a single parent home from Pasadena, California. I was born in Hartford, Conn., but raised in Cali. I’m a successful songwriter and producer who is now making films. THS: did being part of the group, ‘Troop’ come about? SRH: In High School, we all met in school. Rodney Benford the founder of the group offered me a position as the lead singer after he and some friends won the lip sync competition tv show Putin’ On The Hits”. THS: What made you decide to be serious about being a singer-songwriter? SRH: Having idols like Gerald Levert and babyface and Chuckii booker made me wanna become a great writer. THS: Who have you written with and which songs were the most fun to work on? THS: Which people or books have had the most influence on your career and why? SRH: Silvia Rhone had a huge influence on my career because she was the first to believe in my dream. The Earth Chronicles had the most impact on me. THS: What would you say is the #1 key to success in the entertainment industry? our first film Tv series entitled “Day Ones”, we are releasing the TROOP 4 episode series entitled “Story Of A Boyband” We are seeking to highlight independent filmmakers all over the world by bringing their content to the forefront. THS: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it? SRH: I would say my biggest failure was getting off track so soon in my career, I mean I have no regrets, I love my children, but by deciding to become a father and husband so soon in my career really hurt my vibrational frequency. Going from being totally focused on my goals and purpose to asking another person am I their problem hurt my momentum tremendously and it hurt my self esteem.

THS: What are you working on that you can talk about? New music? Films? I just started filming my first horror film called “Nappy Chin” and I’m releasing a new single called “Never Feel That Feeling Again,” first quarter 2022, my latest solo single. I’m working on more film projects than music at the moment. THS: Please list your website and/or your social media platforms. @stevenrussellhartss @steveherich @steven_speaks @dayonesthemovie

I’ve learned that the Universe is always the same and it has the ability to provide even when you forget who you are in your relationship with the universe. THS: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps? SRH: Be dedicated to yourself and your goals, learn what ego is, put the gloves on and never stop swinging. Remember that you and you alone create your own experience, you are not a victim of life, your life is a reflection of your beliefs and how you feel inside. Don’t forget to visualize and see yourself in that end result you want because that balances out the “hard work” perception. THS: What does a typical day in your week look like? SRH: Waking up dropping my two youngest sons off at school, going to the gym, then I come home and spend time with my pigeons feeding them and just spending time with them, then working on whatever project I’m focused on at the time.

THS: What’s better, singing karaoke or singing in the shower? SRH: Depends on the person, lol I hardly do either so i’m not sure. THS: What’s your all time favorite song lyric? “Hold me all through the night, stay til the day is bright and angels don’t ever break the spell Cause you’re the Star Of The Story I’ll always tell..... “Start Of The Story” by Heatwave THS: Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you? SRH: I would like every to know that I’m a man of Right Knowledge and Universal law knowing that I am a piece of Source (God) having a physical experience able to manifest anything from thought to physical manifestation. I AM.

THS: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business? SRH: Remembering that I’m a husband and father and that they need me. Remembering that tough times are a result of my failure to stay in alignment with my source and also never getting too caught up in what things look like because looks can be deceiving.

ACTOR OF THE MONTH

CHRISTOPHER SEVERIO 32

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Actor on the Rise Interview by The Heat Seekers

The Heat Seekers: Tell us a little bit about yourself? Christopher Severio: Hello, my name is Christopher Severio. I’m a 30 year old aspiring actor/entertainer who happens to be a father to a little girl and I’m a total nerd. I love films, video games, and enjoy being adventurous. Why do I feel like I just described myself by posting a description on a dating site? lol. Anyways, I hope that tells you a little bit about myself even though we all have layers! Just like an onion, but hopefully we smell better. The Heat Seekers: How long have you been acting? CS: I’ve been acting my entire life. Just now being recognized for work that I have done but I have been studying and performing since I was a child. Whether it was in front of a camera or just family I was always creating some character or trying to entertain those around me. I enjoy making those around me feel comforted and enjoy seeing people smile. I think that’s a huge key to creating a brighter environment that you surround yourself by. Making those around you happy where you can uplift them, create an escape for your friends/family, or simply help someone in need is giving them a reason to smile. The Heat Seekers: What made you decide to be serious about the film industry? CS: What made me decide to be serious about the film industry was that after high school I needed to begin my own path creating my own way. I wanted to chase my dreams of doing something I loved and hopefully leave a legacy behind that not only I could be proud of but also have my children to be proud of. With that, it would show them that not only you could chase your dreams, but you could obtain anything you worked hard enough for. For me, that’s my reason I got serious.

learning of their upbringings I strive to live to be the best version of me. It has influenced my career tremendously because I know what it takes to earn, grow, fail, and to continue to keep pushing forward even when all hope is lost. The second we have to be Alan Belcher. Alan is a UFC Vet and currently just returning to competition after being away for a few years. Alan has been someone I have looked up to since a teenager watching him perform early on in his career. I began to follow him and his journey. He used to do these morning live talks on Facebook called Hustle Jitsu where he talked about masterminding, marketing, business, personal growth, and doing the damn thing. I would tune every single morning to listen to his words. They would fuel me and put a fire in me that wanted to strive to become something more. I’ve gotten to speak with him on several occasions within the past few years and to me that’s an achievement in my book, getting to share a few words with someone who influences me. One day I would love to get to train with him, as you would say it’s on my bucket list.

The Heat Seekers: The Heat Seekers: Which people or books have had the most influence on your career and why? CS: I could make a list of all the people who have influenced my life because truly I have many people to thank for what I’ve been able to do but for a select few I will mention for being the most influential to my career. The first ones would have to be my parents. My mom and my dad. Through their influence, life advice, and parenting I have been blessed to have such remarkable people by my side because of who they are and through their teachings more so as an adult than child it has opened my eyes to a greater vision of what we call life and

The Heat Seekers: In your opinion, what would you say is the #1 key to success? CS: Failure 1000% would be the #1 key to success, because without failing you can not succeed. You don’t truly understand what it means to succeed if you haven’t failed in what you’re doing or trying to achieve. You might see a glimpse of what is possible but it can just as easily be taken from you in an instant. You have to fail constantly and stand back up each time never giving in to the thought of quitting if you truly want to succeed. For some, people measure success by how much money you might have, but for me success is measured THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

in return gives me hope for this world we live in with all the hate and negativity. Through failing myself I have learned many things and that list goes on. The Heat Seekers: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps? CS: I would say create your own path, learn that failing is part of the journey, you are not alone, that whatever is worth having it will never come easy until you earn it, be good to others, dig deeper even at your lowest so that you can propel yourself further into what you’re meant to become, slow down to breath, and smile back. The Heat Seekers: What does a typical day in your week look like? CS: Oh man, my typical day of my week is crazy. I go from riding around in Lambos to hiking the peak of Mount Everest to finding the lost paintings of Dutch painter Rembrandt and that’s just a Wednesday. You should see Friday. lol In all seriousness my typical day of the week looks like having lots of meals to feast on, the gym, studying time, and spending time with family. When I have my daughter, it’s all about her. She enjoys painting, so we do that a lot. She paints on everything, even me.

by so much more. I feel I am succeeding everytime I learn something new, I learn from my mistakes, I help some one improve their life, I’m able to motivate others, and can lead by example. I measure success by it being a constant entity to strive to obtain so that when I fail in whatever it may be I know I can still succeed because I will not quit. The Heat Seekers: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it? CS: The biggest failure I’ve had was failing myself. I learned that the world doesn’t revolve around Christopher Severio. At a young age my parents tried to teach me such a lesson but for me I always learn the hard way because simply it’s the best way for me to learn. With failing myself I know what it’s like to quit, give up, and blame the world for my mistakes. I learned to hold myself accountable for my actions. I learned that the more positive energy you put in the world the more positive energy is returned. I learned that it’s okay to ask for help. I learned that helping others is more important than just helping myself because helping others is fruitful and seeing others succeed gives me warmth. Seeing others do well, climb from their depths, and watching them help others

34 THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

The Heat Seekers: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business? CS: I would have to say my daughter and my girlfriend! My daughter is my heart which gives me passion to love what I’m doing and I want to show her anything is possible. My girl friend is my drive and my biggest supporter. I have never had someone stand by my side like she does who believes in me more than I have in myself. She gives me the positive energy and attitude to be able to strive for more. As people would say I think she is the one! I love her very dearly!! The Heat Seekers: Tell us about your role in “Greater” as Brandon Burlsworth. How has it affected the way you live life? CS: Playing the role as Brandon Burlsworth was a big challenge for me because playing someone who walked this earth, you have to be specific and accurate to who that person was. With Brandon luckily he was a lot like me, but also very different from the information I was able to gather. But through learning who Brandon was with the legacy he left behind, I found my faith again that I had once lost at a younger age. Through Brandon, I was able to open my heart and feel again. I am forever thankful to him and someone I hope being able to portray him in Greater was a way that I was able to say thank you!

The Heat Seekers: What is a non-acting related thing or experience that has helped you as an actor? CS: This would definitely have to be listening to music and writing poetry! I haven’t always been good with being able to handle my emotions, feelings, doubts, and etc. but through listening to music while writing poetry has helped me be able to express myself in ways that has been possible in my daily life. In that I take my poetry to reread my work and transfer those feelings/emotions into my work if it’s something I feel I need to pull out of myself. I remember how I felt in those moments so I’m able to harness that. I don’t always do that but it is something that helps me as an actor.

The Heat Seekers: What projects are you currently working on? (That you can talk about). CS: I’m unable to talk about any future projects at the moment, but I am also on the grind making things happen! The Heat Seekers: What’s your all time favorite movie and actor? CS: Honesty I have so many favorite actors/actresses and movies that I could make a huge list. I constantly rewatch movies all the time, which I feel like the library in my head is a mass of masterpieces. I will give a few of my favorites though. Movies: Keanu Reeves - Lake House, John Carpenters Halloween To Kill A Mockingbird Tombstone The Last Of The Mohicans The Silence Of The Lambs The Crow Lethal Weapon (Mel Gibson & Danny Glover) Reservoir Dogs Actors Mel Gibson Keanu Reeves Joaquin Phoenix Chris Tucker Shia LaBeouf Leonardo DiCaprio (This list could go on forever lol) The Heat Seekers: Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you? CS: I would like everyone to know that I hope we can all come together in this world, bringing peace so that we can learn from one another in a healthy environment. She could not imagine living anywhere else. It is a part of her and who she is. However, Hannah has a lot on her plate from the tinker shop, her work at the inn, choir obligations, her future sister n law’s wedding, and whatever else the town of Evergreen needs. Not to mention her developing relationship with Elliot. If you know Hannah, she is not one to say no or ask for help. Hannah is overwhelmingly busy, yet she still feels like she has not made her mark or found that “something special” she can call her own. Yet an opportunity arises, and she is excited to take on a new responsibility as the manager of the new Evergreen Museum. Just as Hannah finds the one thing, she can call her own and make her mark; she learns of plans that Elliot has that could end their relationship, just as they are getting started. Just when you think that things could not get any worst, Hannah is faced with something else. The museum opening is being jeopardize by one of the original owners. One thing is happening after another, creating a small overload of emergency fires that need to be put out and resolved, is bringing an uproar to the town of Evergreen at a time when the town is supposed to be joyous. The strain of Hannah’s busy schedule, her brother’s upcoming wedding, and the overall hustle and bustle of Evergreen may be more than she can take. After church one Sunday I could not decide where to go and I ended up here at TruBroth on Main Street in Travelets Rest SC. It’s a Vietnamese family owned restaurant. The spring rolls are different. They are wrapped in rice paper filled with rice noodles shrimp and mint leaves with a side of peanut sauce. It is so different but yet so good and satisfying. My meal was the Beef Pho Entree. It is a nourishing Rice noodle Soup made from grass fed beef bone broth simmered for 20 plus hours using a variety of anti- inflammatory herbs, topped with slices of tenderloin beef and vegetables. I ordered the small portion and it still was too much. The atmosphere is very peaceful as well as colorful. The son who works there is like a little adult who knows everything about the business from taking orders, to taking money to knowing the dishes to choose from. They also serve bubble tea of different flavors. My favorite is the thai tea. If you’re traveling through this small historic town, this place is a must try! Tasteful Tips & Trips with Robin” is not just an ordinary food blog! It’s about fun, adventure, and a lot of tasty foods as I travel to places along this journey road called life. I am all about traveling and experimenting food flavors and the mixtures of them. So what better way to spread the word to others about places that I visit and help promote businesses! If you would like for me to visit your venue or restaurant please email me at R.Shockley18@gmail.com the name of your restaurant and location. You may just see me show up unexpectedly one day with my big smile and readily appetite!
