Letter from the Founder and CEO This year has been unprecedented and full of disbelief and tragedy. Although we all were impacted in some way—whether setback, loss, or hardship—2020 allowed each individual to self-reflect and appreciate the gift of life. God continues to provide and watch over us. As we accept our new normal and impart positive light to those around us, I am hoping that the launch of The Heat Seekers Magazine will help to bring positive vibes to everyone. As the Founder and CEO of this publication, I want 2021 to be a year of reflection and positivity. As you read each article on how each artist has made it through the trials of 2020, congratulate and appreciate their willingness to overcome. I will call 2021 our “new beginning.” As we begin the process of healing, restoring, and evaluating all around us, let’s remember to still celebrate one another. Without God, this magazine would not be possible. Without hope, I would have stopped midway in the year. Without courage, I would have dropped everything and settled for second-best. Instead, I decided to use my gift of spreading joy and love and compress it into colorful pages and images of individuals that I honor and adore. Thanks for joining me on this new journey of journalism; I wish you peace, happiness, joy, and prosperity for 2021. Remember: “Quitters never overcome, and overcomes never quit!” Blessings to all of you!

GimmeTheL88T Interview by David R. Navarro
David R. Navarro: Tell us a little bit about yourself? Your music? LaLo Towers: I’m LaLo Towers, put the 88 in between, and GimmeTheL88T (GimmeTheLOOT). I’m a Mexican-American, born in Southeast Texas, Port Arthur to be exact. I’m a stoner you know, a product of my environment. I enjoy just doin me; man, I don’t know what to tell you honestly. As for my music, I enjoy the freedom I feel; because the way I look at it, music, as any form of art, is a form of self-expression. And on top of that, I also use it as therapy when I feel like I can’t speak with no one else, I get on the microphone and just let it out. DN: How long have you been in the music industry? LT: I started back in about 2010-2011, around the end of ‘10 beginning of ‘11 and recorded just a real quick mixtape. It took about a month for 11 songs. Wasn’t the best mixtape, but you know everybody starts somewhere. I dropped my first visual in 2012 and have just been runnin it since, can’t stop, won’t stop. DN: What made you decide to be serious about music? LT: The way I look at it we get one shot at this thing called life, to the extent of my knowledge. So, I just wanted to make sure I was doing something that I wanted to do. The decision that I made was not based on what anybody else thought was the right move, or the right path, or the right way of doing things. This is just something I enjoy doing, and something I wanted to pursue. Honestly, I’m a bit hard-headed, so regardless of what people said, thought, or whatever, you know I ran it, I made the decision, and I ran that. DN: Which people or books have had the most influence on your music career and why? LT: As far as people go, way before I even took this seriously, I would say my godbrother because he actually introduced me to recording or the idea of recording. Which I never really thought about before, then I was like in Middle School. Also, just people who actually dug what I did, you know what I mean? I can’t think of somebody off of rip, but there’ve been a few over the years. As far as books, I wasn’t really too big into reading until recently; but 48 Laws of Power was a decent one that everybody recommended, that I enjoyed. Then there’s one titled 75 Hard Challenge that was written by Andy Frisella, which was very motivational. Just a lot of self-improvement books, another one Think and Grow Rich, basically books that made me look in the mirror and really focus on the only person that has an impact on my life, which is me.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE
DN: What would you say is the #1 key to success in the music industry? LT: For one, personally, I feel like originality. For two, yes we want to get paid, but don’t let that be your main motive, actually enjoy what you’re doing, and don’t be afraid to grow. Evolve with time, don’t be afraid to be different because the sound of today is already here; but as far as I’m concerned, I’m creating the sound of tomorrow and again, consistency, persistence, and confidence in yourself. Because everybody isn’t always going to see what you see, and nine times out of 10 people don’t see it until it’s already manifested itself. By then I mean, I’ve been telling y’all man, I’ve been telling you, but it’s good, I ain’t trippin. DN: Can you give us some examples of things you are doing or have done to expand your fanbase? LT: Given the current state of the world, the main thing I’ve been doing is releasing the music videos every month; that’s been going on for the past 10 months, and I already have the 11th video in post-production for next month. I run Google ads, I run Facebook ads, I run Instagram ads do my best to get real placements on playlists, and just sending my EPK to different blogs and stuff. Hoping people just enjoy what I do enough to write about it or to share it with other people.
DN: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it? LT: The biggest failure came from putting others before myself. When it came to the music business, I wanted everybody to make it. I wanted all of us to get to the top, but it just didn’t pan out that way. I mean the biggest failure as to date, there’s just so many. Man, lessons and blessins you know what I’m saying? It’s how I’m feeling until I succeed type s***, but just a lot of my failures in the past have come from expecting too much from others, walk a mile for someone but they won’t move an inch for you, you know? It’s put me in a place where I try to do everything myself even though they say it’s not possible, but I do my best. DN: What advice can you give others who want to follow in your footsteps? LT: Do you. If it is something you believe in deep down, like solid, to your core. They got people around you that ain’t necessarily there for you, you know what I mean? Like seeing what you see or trying to speak from a place of lack, or just look down on you. If you know you got it, man look, believe it the world’s goin to see it. It’s hard, no doubt, but look pressure makes diamonds you feel me? So just run that s***, just run that s***, and always be aware and conscious of your mental health and the energy around you because s*** gets tough as it is. We can’t let them setbacks get the best of us; so, do your best to not only be consistent but always remember to take care of yourself cuz if you don’t who will.
moving in the right direction. Doing my best to not allow things to get to me, but at the end of the day, we are all human. So yes, I do have my bad days, but I try my best to prevent those bad days from turning into bad weeks and turn into bad chapters, etc. DN: Please list your website and/or your social media platforms. https://linktr.ee/LaLo88Towers DN: Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you? LT: My music is autobiographical for the most part. At the end of the day, I give people moments in my life; so once you start diggin, you’ll start hearing the evolution of Lalo Towers. Again, a big thank you in advance to anyone who does listen to and supports my music.
DN: What does a typical day in your week look like? LT: A typical day consists of waking up, getting a workout in (whether it be cardio or weights), burn one or two if I don’t have too much planned that day. I run a business besides the music with my wife; so, we make sure we knock everything off our checklist. Being that I’ve been blessed, and I haven’t had to work for nobody for the past few years. It’s all on me I just make sure that I be as productive as possible and continue to work towards my goals. Obviously being successful with this music is important, but ultimately financial freedom is the goal and with that comes. The ability to move how I would really like to move, basically just trying to grow every day even if it’s just a little. DN: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business? Weed! Weed! Weed! Weed! Energy drinks, caffeine, cardio, lifting weights, just doing my best to not let things get to me. I do meditate as much as I can, and do yoga from time to time; again, it’s just being conscious of self, trying to see what triggers me and what gets me to certain levels so I can keep THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Hey, Creatives! May 2021: Surviving the Indie Scene with Candice By Candice “Ordered Steps” Johnson It’s alright to admit one or two of the above thoughts have crossed your mind…or maybe even worse. As independent creatives, sometimes we mistake rejection as a measure of our gifts. However, there’s power unleashed in the ‘NO.” “NO” can push us to our purpose, so that our passion does not get paused. “NO” can release us from constraints which could water down the vision, rather than blaze the trail only we were meant to ignite. And “NO” can FREE us from the fear of succeeding on our own. Sometimes, rejection stings like a swig of liquor we just can’t swallow. I used to hate rejection. It seemed like I allowed the “NO” to cripple me before allowing the “YES” to help me rise. I’ve seen it over and over with Creatives – someone’s failure to include our art hurts so bad, we doubt what we’ve produced was worth it.
Hey, Creative: Don’t view rejection as testament of your worth; it’s the motivation you NEED to do what you were called to do! We rely too much on rejection to fold and quit on the vision…but I won’t allow you to QUIT. Dust yourself off, get up and get it DONE. Someone is waiting for you to move past someone’s approval and start YOUR legacy. What are you waiting for? You haven’t been rejected…you’ve been ELEVATED!!!!
Is it really that awful? I put everything I had into this project! Why do they hate it? I don’t have any talent – my work sucks!

DN: What made you decide to be serious about music? KS: I have always had the desire to pursue a music career but it was not a dream that was supported by my family. However, after the death of a close friend I realized that life was too short for me to spend my days doing anything but what I love to do. KS: In highschool I read “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou and it changed my life. encouraged me to find my voice and speak my truth. KS: In addition to consistently releasing music and staying active on social media, I travel to various events and perform as often as possible. Additionally, keeping fresh content and visuals.
DN: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it? KS: I don’t really look at anything as a failure anymore. There is always a lesson to be learned. I have fallen down plenty of times. I have been disappointed. However, each time I’m able to gain more insight that gives me tools that I need to get up and keep pushing forward. DN: What advice can you give other young men and women who want to follow in your footsteps? KS: You have to be willing to work hard and invest in your goals and dreams. Set short term and long term goals and be diligent about accomplishing them everyday. Seek to understand your purpose in life and let that guide you on your journey. DN: What does a typical day in your week look like? KS: I like to wake up and pray, meditate, and journal. I love a hot cup of coffee while I’m checking emails and making a todo list of tasks that must be completed. From there, I’m taking meetings, taking care of the needs of my family, and practicing my craft. I try to fill my days with things that will bring me closer to my goals. Anything else is just a distraction. DN: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business? KS: I try to always keep my faith in God and the vision that he gave me for my music. Making Moves Interview by La Sheera Lee
Brenda Jackson is a trailblazer in the world of entertainment. She is an award-winning author, a much sought after speaker, and a successful publisher. Known for her gentle spirit and business smarts, she is a force all by herself. Brenda Jackson’s professional publishing career started in 1994. That year, she signed with Kensington Arabesque. Since 1994, she has published over 125 novels and novellas. Additionally, she has over 15 million books in print. Over the years, she has written for some of the major publishing houses in the industry. She has written for the following publishers: St. Martins Press, BET, Kensington, NAL, Harlequin/Silhouette and Harlequin Kimani Romance. Presently, she is writing exclusively for Harlequin and is excited to have all of her books under one dynamic publishing house. During her illustrious career, Brenda Jackson has accomplished many “first” in her journey. She was the African-American author to have a book published under the Harlequin/Silhouette Desire line of books. She was also the first African-American romance author to make USA Today’s Bestseller’s List and the New York Times Bestseller’s List for the series romance genre. In addition to the aforementioned accolades, Mrs. Jackson has received numerous awards. She was the 2012 NAACP Image Award Nominee for my 81st book, A Silken Thread. Mrs. Jackson has received numerous Community Service Awards from the Delta Sigma Thetas, the AKAs and the Zeta Phi Beta Sororities. In addition, she received the Pioneer Award in Writing from Romantic Times Magazine. One of the highest honors a romance writer can receive was bestowed to Brenda Jackson in 2013. She received the Romance Writers of America’s (RWA) Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award. La Sheera Lee: How are you able to maintain the same energy with your movies? Brenda Jackson: Since my movies are/will be based on books I’ve written, the same level of energy continues because now I can focus on seeing the visual of what I’ve written. LL: You have successfully independently produced a movie project. In addition, you have previously partnered with other entertainment entities, Passionflix and BET, to bring your
characters to the screen. What did you learn through the various processes? BJ: I learned that although I might want otherwise, you can’t make a movie 100% by the book. A book has a lot of introspection, which is why the characters think a lot. That’s not dialogued shared but their inner thoughts. You can’t speak that out loud so you have to find a way so the viewer can know what that person was thinking. In Truly Everlasting, I added a beauty salon scene that shared Felicia’s thoughts with her stylist and others in the salon. However, I always strive to at least get 80% of the book to the movies. There are some that only shoot for 25% or 30% and what you end up with is a movie that is not like the book, but only based on the book. LL: How has working in the publishing industry prepared you for the movie industry? BJ: I Am a businesswoman and every achievement/project has prepared me for the next level. Publishing and movie-making are vastly different. I think that’s why movie makers don’t get the fact that movie watchers who have read a good book want to see most of that book when it becomes a movie. It takes a person with knowledge of both to fully understand this. LL:Artists are very sensitive about the content. Often, as readers, we notice that many books to films projects are quite different from the book. Do you attempt to have the script remain close to the plot of the book? Or are you comfortable with a lot of artistic liberties taking place? BJ: I am one of those artists who want my script to remain close to the book. But because I’ve done both I know that can’t always be the case. However, I will shoot for a percentage of 80% or more. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

LL: Your partnership with Ashore Entertainment has made a huge splash in the entertainment industry. Several well-respected media outlets reported the news. Do you feel that your partnership will be a catalyst for more production companies to seek out African American Romance Authors? BJ: I am hoping that it will. Authors need to make sure they are prepared when it happens. 1) Do they own the movie rights to their books? 2)Are there books available in all types- traditional, e-book and audio. This is important because the movie industry wants to make sure your book is available in all forms. They anticipate an increase in sales for you and your book and want to make sure it’s available in all forms. 3) Is your book a popular book in the way of book sales? figure if the book is a bestseller, then they will pull in a wide audience for the viewing of the movie. That doesn’t mean that a book has to be a best seller to be made into a movie, because a good book along with being transformed into a good movie can become popular on its own. However, the movie industry still takes this into account and the authors should, too. LL: What movies are first slated for production? BJ: This is a secret for now. A big announcement will be made in May or June. Still in contract negotiations. LL: Streaming is currently the most popular method to view movies. Will your new projects be available via streaming? BJ: Some will be streamed, some will be on regular TV channels and some will make the big screen. The movie industry looks at a script and determines which type of release will make the biggest impact. LL: Well, you know we can’t leave without chatting about your books. What books have you released the last quarter of the year? BJ: Right now I have 4 scheduled but that might change if I have to be on a movie set. 1) Desperate Measures - Book 2 of of the Men of Action Series 2) One Christmas Wish, which is part of the Catalina Cove Series 3) Masters of the Game, which is part of the Bennetts/Masters Series 4)What He Wants for Christmas, which is a new Westmoreland Legacy novel.

Game On
Interview by Lissha Sadler~ Hardcore Grind
Conversation With Platinum Hit Recording Artist Nick Nittoli. Born in Garfield, New Jersey Nick Nittoli is an American actor, musician, and hip hop artist signed to Warner Chappell Music Publishing. He originally gained fame and notoriety from Bravo’s Platinum Hit. In 2003 he made his movie debut Down the Barrel as Nathan. In 2013, Nick partnered with Trend Def, a West Hollywood-based studio with a Sony Orchard distribution deal. Since joining Trend Def, Nick has had several dozen songs released, including features by rappers like Snoop Dogg, YG, and French Montana, and began writing and producing for artists like Zendaya, Neon Hitch, Bianca Ryan, Sam Bruno, and countless others. Lissha Sadler: How would you describe your musical ear? Nick Nittoli: I’m a trained musician. I play five instruments and I sing I would say my ears are very eclectic. LS: Where does your creativity flow? How do you avoid burning out? NN: I’m a very creative person. Movies television shows Continuously yeah I will inspire me. Always working on something new. I’m a writer-producer and an artist so if something bores me I move to one of the next jobs. LS: What was the most defining time for you? NN: When Snoop Dogg decided to use my exact music and melody in the song that I did with him. LS: Tell us about the vision behind your music? NN: My goal is to connect people from all races and all genre of music. LS: You are a very accomplished producer and artist, you have been the music behind many popular sounds. Tell us about the concept behind the song and video “I Wonder”? NN: The concepts and meaning behind the song I wonder was basically to motivate people to ask questions about what happened to some of our favorite celebrities and artist. To dig deeper and to look for hidden meanings and to try to see a bigger picture.
18
THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE
LS: There’s a heavy cost to pursuing and pulling your vision together. Who is your biggest support system throughout your journey? NN: My family has always been a huge supporter and backer of my music. My grandparents who wrote a song for Frank Sinatra called here’s to the band and my girlfriend and her family have helped a ton with my music videos and promotion etc. LS: How do you think COVID has affected the music industry? NN: COVID-19 has had an impact on the music industry for many reasons but the main one I think is that there are no live shows and there is no ability to connect with your favorite artist or to go see your favorite artist in concert, as well as a lot of people, are not spending money right now and the music in history because they are saving their money for what could potentially be the end of the world. LS: You inspire so many in the music industry, how does that make you feel? NN: Inspiring artists makes me feel great because a lot of other artists inspired me and I wouldn’t be doing this music today unless those artists came before me and pave the way. So inspiration is kind of like a recycling system… What goes around comes around.
LS: If you could change anything about the music industry what would it be? NN: If I could change something about the music industry I would make it so that people who have talent and maybe not $1 million in the bank could pursue their dreams and have equal respect and be able to equally compete with other people who have no talent or less talent and have millions of dollars to throw at their career. I believe that the music in history is unfairly split between classes of people based on monetary value as opposed to the actual value.
LS: What is next for Nick Nittoli? What will your top priorities be moving forward in your career? NN: I have an upcoming album called self untitled which will be released sometime in the summertime and I am shooting a ton of new music videos as well! My top priority right now as an artist is to continuously put out new music videos a ton of content all the time and eventually begin touring and playing live shows once that’s available to artists again.
LS: What advice do you have for aspiring producers and artists? NN: My advice for any aspiring artist or producer is to never give up on your dream if you believe in it. To be consistent. To take your career seriously and to treat your career like a day job at Home Depot. Show up early clock in and work hard. But the most important thing is to have longevity and the only way to have longevity is to continue striving and to not give up when times get hard.

Wild Women and The Blues Denny S. Bryce
Denny S. Bryce is a genius of a writer in her debut historical novel, Wild Women and The Blues. From the beautiful and stunning cover to the words that leap from the pages, she cleverly crafts an intriguing, entertaining dual time period masterpiece. Total wow factor are the words that come to mind as you are drawn into the world of Wild Women and The Blues. It is all so real; the music, lights, fashion, the grime, and grit of the danger of the Chicago streets in the 1920s. The authenticity of it all creates a feeling that you are right there in the midst of the action with a front row seat watching the past and present unfold as one’s truth is being told. Wild Women and The Blues is a masterpiece indeed. It is a beautiful description of words that paints an exquisite work of art on the canvas of your imagination. It is the intertwining story of Sawyer Hayes (2015) and Honoree Dalcour (1925), both bound by their inner unrest, needing to be set free. Sawyer is broken, hurt, grief stricken, and in desperate need to finish his thesis to include a film documentary. With a box of hidden treasures, he took from his grandmother, his discovery brings unanswered questions, hidden secrets, and keys to the discovery of the truth. Honoree, a 110-year-old woman, is the key to his missing link and unanswered questions along with the film that is believed to be one of the lost films of the one, Oscar Micheaux. Sawyer’s quest for the truth, closure and healing has the past meeting the present, colliding together light thunder and lightning in a unexpectant storm. There is no turning back, no matter the cost. He is put to the challenge of putting the pieces together to complete his thesis and uncover the truth that is hidden and long ago buried. The journey of the quest for the truth is deeply rooted in the history of the past, secrets, lies, forgiveness, and love. The entanglement of the past meets the present has a mesmerizing appeal that keeps you turning the pages for more. Wild Women and The Blues is a read you will want to read again and again, even if just for the pure enjoyment of the 1920s Jazz Age cultural experience and the memories of, “Honoree Dalcour”. The Amen Corner-Vol4 by Nayomi Charnelle
“Alabaster Box” by CeCe Winans has got to be one of the most relatable songs ever written. The song gives a riveting depiction of Mary Magdaline washing the feet of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with her tears and drying them with her hair. This was her way of showing gratitude to the one who casted demons out of her and gave her a brand new life. The Bible tells us she had an expensive fragrance within a small box of Alabaster and she used it to give Jesus a beautiful fragrance before his crucifixion. The lyrics speak of people not knowing your struggle and not understanding your praise. They wonder why you act the way you do when you stand up and shout. They don’t understand that if it wasn’t for the blood, you wouldn’t be standing. The Lyrics also tell how some may not understand the cost of the praise you give to the one who set you free. They may not understand the battles you had to fight and the pain you’ve had to overcome. God sees and knows all. Give him what he deserves.

I was first introduced to Briana Cole with her book ‘The Wives We Play’ published by Dafina, and I have been in love with her novels ever since. Whenever I read one of her books..I know that she is getting ready to take me on an emotional rollercoaster. That’s why I jumped at the opportunity to interview her this month. So enjoy this interview and share with a friend. King Brooks: Hi Briana, How are you? Briana Cole: I’m doing great! Thanks so much for the interview! KB: Tell the readers about your new book ‘The Marriage Pass’ from the Unconditional Series? BC: The Marriage Pass centers around a couple who celebrate their one-year anniversary by giving each other a free pass to indulge in their deepest desires. For Dorian, the hall pass is a chance to spend the night with his wife’s sister, but the decision leads to a domino effect of dire consequences. KB: Where did the idea for this book come from? BC: The inspiration for this story originally came in the form of a book cover someone was selling on Facebook. The woman had her finger over her lips and it was something about that cover that stuck with me. My mind started working on a series of ‘what-if’ scenarios; trying to figure out what secret this woman was keeping and why. I’ve always been an author that writes about the unconventional and there is usually some element of infidelity. So with The Marriage Pass, I thought about a couple giving permission to cheat and all the scandal that can happen if one was to “cross the line.” Technically, is it wrong if they had permission? I knew that was something worth reading. KB: How long did it take you to write ‘The Marriage Pass?’ BC: It took me about three months to write. KB: It’s been said that this new series is a spin off from the first 3 books. How is this new book different from the first three books? BC: I like to say The Marriage Pass is in the same ‘universe,’ if that makes sense. Like a Marvel movie. In fact, some characters you met in the Unconditional series do appear in this book. But you don’t have to read the Unconditional series to read this one because it’s written as its own, individual story with all the
ingredients for my signature Cole cocktail: An unconventional story, scandalous suspense, crazy plots twists, and lots of drama! KB: Why do you continue to push the boundaries of relationships/marriage? Briana: I like to think (and write) outside of the box. It makes my stories unique, engaging, and quite the discussion topic. KB: Can you relate to any of the characters in any way? How so? BC: I had the most fun writing about Reagan but I feel I can identify a little closer with Shantae. She is more level-headed and strategic; thinking before she acts. Readers may feel she is dumb, but I don’t think so at all. She’s just a woman in love and struggling to get over the hurt. We’ve all been there. KB: Please give the readers a brief bio about you? BC: Known as The Literary Drama Queen, Briana Cole is a multi-talented entertainment mogul in both the book and film industries. She is the author of the nationally-acclaimed Unconditional series and has also penned several novels under an mother of three, THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

three, and active member of the illustrious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated organization. alternate pseudonym. Briana is the co-Screenwriter and Associate Producer for the pulp urban noir film, Gutta Mamis: Money Bag Tales and is currently writing, producing, and starring in her own feature film, Pseudo. She has been recognized in a number of popular blogs and magazines, the most prominent being Sophisticate’s Hair Magazine, Publisher’s Weekly, Popsugar, and Sheen. In addition to this, Briana is a motivational speaker, Atlanta native, mother of three, and active member of the illustrious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated organization. KB: How do you balance motherhood, being a wife, and career? BC: To be honest, I probably haven’t slept in four years, lol. Seriously, I have a phenomenal support system! Plus, I am a person that loves to plan so I try to organize my time and responsibilities on my calendar. My children are very understanding and ensure I make time to work with them on school projects or just sit and watch a movie together. It’s all about balance. KB: Tell us about you venturing into film making? BC: I am a writer under Friesian Script Services and we ‘flip scripts’ or write book-to-film adaptations. In fact, I am a co-Screenwriter and Associate Producer for the pulp urban noir film, Gutta Mamis: Money Bag Tales which was released in November 2020. Feeling
inspired, I took the concept for one of my own stories and wrote a screenplay, executive produced, and starred in it. That is a psychological thriller called Pseudo, slated to be released sometime this year. KB: What has the journey been like? BC: It’s a lot to learn but so rewarding because it allows me to marry my two passions: writing and acting. KB: Tell Us about your upcoming releases ‘Justified’ & ‘Couples Wanted’ later this year? BC: My story in the Justified anthology is called Pseudoand is actually the concept for my movie of the same name. It’s about Kennedy, a con artist who has capitalized on stealing women’s identities. Now, the real people whose identities she took are being killed one by one and Kennedy emerges as the prime suspect. Couples Wanted is the follow-up to The Marriage Pass and is about a couple who decide to try an alternative lifestyle when they meet a pair of swingers. But exploring this unchartered territory is not without its consequences when they realize their new swinger friends have ulterior motives. KB: When all is said and done, how do you want us to remember you? BC: I want to be remembered for my unconventional plot twists. I hope these stories resonate with my readers long after they’ve closed the book and they walk away entertained, as well as educated in something new and different. HOWARD HEWETT Contemporary Gospel Singer
30
THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE
An Irresistable Voice Interview by Teresa B. Howell
Howard Hewett is one of the most talented soul singers of the past two decades. In group settings, as a guest vocalist and as a solo singer, Hewett’s virtually irresistible voice has wrapped itself around material of various qualities - turning good songs into great records and doing his best to save some of the lesser material with which he has sometimes been saddled as a solo artist. Raised in Akron, Ohio, Hewett moved to Los Angeles and, after a period as a dancer on Soul Train, became a member of Shalamar, the centerpiece of Dick Griffey’s SOLAR (Sound of Los Angeles) label. His mellifluous tenor voice mixed beautifully with the bright vocals of Jody Watley and the writing and production of Leon Sylvers III, resulting in such top hits as “The Second Time Around,” “Full of Fire,” “Dead Giveaway” and “A Night to Remember,” as well as a number of underappreciated ballads, such as “You Can Count On Me” and “You’re the One for Me.” When Shalamar broke up in the mid 1980s, Hewett went on to pursue a solo career. He signed with Elektra Records and recorded 1986’s I Commit To Love (R&B #12), a relatively solid urban album that yielded two R&B hits, “I’m For Real” (R&B #2) and “Stay” (R&B #8). The album also included “Say Amen”, a gospel tune that became a surprise hit on the Gospel charts and is Hewett’s signature song. Hewett contributed vocals to La Toya Jackson’s Hot 100 hit single “Heart Don’t Lie” in 1984. In 1990, Hewett released a self-titled album, which included the hit “Show Me” (R&B #2), and 1992 saw the release of the LP Allegiance, which was not received as well as previous albums. He contributed to the second season theme song of “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper” which was a remake of Sam & Dave’s R&B Top 10 hit “Soul Man”. This recording was produced by singer Steve Tyrell. After 1995’s It’s Time, Hewett stopped recording solo, spending much of his time providing wonderful guest vocals on albums by jazz artists such as Joe Sample, Brian Culbertson, George Duke and Everett Harp and on several gospel albums. Then in 2001, he recorded his first all gospel album, The Journey, on Sony, followed a year later by
The Journey Live: From the Heart. It was six years before his long-awaited R&B return on the album, If Only. He continues to tour in multi-artist shows around the world and to provide guest vocals on the albums of others. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Howard Hewett How did you get started in music? I have been singing since I was 10 years old in Akron Ohio. I was the lead singer in a gospel group, The Hewett’s with my 3 sisters. My mom was a local gospel promoter. She brought in some big names. I was 20 or 21 years old when I started singing for money. Was it 1977, when you started with Shalamar? I came on as the 3rd lead singer in 1979, replacing Gary Mumford and Gerald Brown. My first album with them was Big Fun and first single was Second Time around. What’s next? I was recently back from Maryland. I have been in some small venues, Birchmire and (garbled name) from Nashville. I believe in returning to smaller limited capacity venues that need to social distance. I don’t want these smaller venues to go out of business. I believe that small safe steps is the safest way to start getting back out there. Having shows at these kind of venues have tided me over for now. In the meantime I’m doing Friday night chats on Facebook and calling them FACC (Fresh Air, Cardio and Conversation). I also do walks to beef up my cardio. I believes that the virus feeds off of low immune systems and low Vitamin D. I’ve also got, “Howard’s Girls”, a spin off from the FACC, it is a community of support and conversation for each of us. I really love how this has organically come about. I am also going to write a book. How can we reach you? Actor & Executive Producer Interview By Robin Shockley
When Dreams become reality for Baltimore city man and Hollywood makes the connection. Based on a true life story about guns, drugs and gangster life, Hollywood signs a 20 year deal with actor, movie screenwriter, director and producer out of Baltimore Maryland. Mr. Larry Derr has a story that inspires and motivates in a way that catches people’s attention. Life hasn’t always been easy for Mr. Derr. When he was five years old he was shot in the leg with a 357 magnum. As a teenager he was hit by a fire truck while driving and lost his memory for a year with amnesia. Also, later in life he served time in prison. Yes, life was rough in the younger years for him. However, at the age of 39 Larry says that he encourages those with a passion to pursue dreams to stop partying and get focused on what’s important in life. Larry started his acting career in theater and loved it. He played “Onion” on the wire in season one and became friends with J.D. Williams and Tray Chaney on and off camera. When I asked Larry how his dreams of acting became a reality, he began to tell me about a dream he had that inspired him. In this dream that he had it was a continuation of a dream. He was passing the mountains of Hollywood driving a convertible car with someone in the car but he did not know who that person was. They were laughing and making jokes and then he woke up. He then thinks to himself, “man I wish I could finish this dream” and that is what happened. He went back to sleep and he began laughing and joking again with this person who was in the car with him and then he woke up again. He tells me he thought this dream felt so real that he wanted to go back to sleep to see if it could continue. Now this was his third time going back to sleep to see if the dream will continue and he said that this has never happened again after this moment. So as he went back to sleep he began to joke with the person again and then realized on the third continuation of the dream, as he spoke, “stop playing around with me man Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” Then he realized it was Will Smith. Laughingly, he said that excited him and that he had always wanted to be an actor and this dream led him to pursue the real dream of reality. Well Mr. Derr’s dream of becoming an actor exceeded writing and directing with producing the sold-out hit movie Guns and Grams. There are over 14 celebrity actors in this film. Including

SAG Awards Nominee and American Black Film Festival winner Clifton Powell (Ray, Civil Brand) and winner of the Locarno International Film Festival and Young Artist Award winner Omar Gooding (Baby Boy, Wild & Crazy Kids). As well as star Joseph D’Onofrio (Good Fellas) round out the cast in GNG Productions debut feature film “Guns and Grams”. This film has sold out already in Decatur Georgia at the AMC theaters as well as Baltimore Maryland at Security Square Mall multiple times. Recently on April 2, 2021 a red carpet premiere was set and Felicia Pearson also known as “Snoop” (the wire) made a presentation with interviews and a few others such as Lamont Elliot, Irvan Speed and Tiffany Chambers. These last three mentioned, started their acting career because Mr. Derr saw potential and opened that door to give them a shot in this film. In recent interviews with “ Focus Forward with Robin on the Go”, these three people mentioned all explained to me how Larry recognizes those who wish to excel in their craft and are grateful for the opportunity to be featured in the movie “Guns and Grams”.
Next stop for the showing is Times Square NY on Friday May 14th 2021 with Larry Derr and the GNG Productions team. There will be various media outlets on site for the Red Carpet premiere. The film’s limited release has been picked up by AMC Theaters and has sold out multiple viewings in Baltimore and Atlanta and is expanding to other cities including Chicago Miami and Houston. Due to its ongoing success Derr’s Guns And Grams was awarded the movie wall of fame for 2020 in Baltimore for selling out the most shows along with Black Panther, Acrimony, and Avengers at the AMC theaters. Independent film distributor Adler & Associates Entertainment has acquired the rights in fielding and is now giving offers for worldwide sales on digital and VOD (Video On Demand). Derr has been reeled in for some BIG projects on the rise! He wrote this TRUE to Life story of guns, drugs and gang life that took place in his home town of Baltimore Maryland. It is a mixture of his very own personal life as well as the life of the Sicilian mafia. “GUNS AND GRAMS” is based on actual events of an old standing alliance between the Sicilian and African American Gangsters; Forged with dirty money and backroom deals to outline the rules of the heroin trade in Baltimore. It’s pushed to the breaking point by a new generation driven by crime and greed. On March 16th, 4pm Mr. Derr presented the movie to Adler & Associates Entertainment to distribute it worldwide. This is exciting! There are over 14 notable celebrities in this film including Tray Chaney (The Wire), J.D. Williams (Pootie Tang, OZ), and Hassan Johnson (Brooklyn’s Finest), and so many more! Mr. Derr says that he wants people to see him more than just a faster movie producer. He has other projects he will be working on too such as a horror and comedy film in the future. Julia A. Royston is a woman who is not scared to jump into new endeavours. This woman of purpose has appeared on The Bobby Jones Presents New Artist Showcase and ministered with notables such as Bishop Jackie E. McCullough, Pastor Donnie McClurkin, Bishop Noel Jones, Bishop Tudor Bismarck, Myron Williams and Bishop Richard “Mr. Clean” White. In December 2004 and 2005, Julia toured Switzerland with the Voices of Gospel Concert Series of St. Stephens Baptist Church. Now this songbird has spread her wings into the area and books. She is on a mission to entertain, uplift, and to assist as many people as she can. Yes, she is still soaring to new heights. In 2008, BK Royston Publishing Company was established and released its first book titled, “All New Season in Word.” To date Julia Royston has written 50 books. In 2015, a second publishing company, Royal Media Publishing was established to provide an outlet for the authors with mainstream topics for a global audience. Royal Media Publishing is committed to publishing high quality manuscripts to bring to the forefront issues that touch every walk of society. She is sitting down with Heat Seekers to tell us about her journey. La Sheera Lee: How are you able to balance all of the different compartments to fit my lifestyle? Julia A. Royston: Discipline and I was raised in a household that my dad was a teacher in the day, my parents were also an entrepreneurs day and night with their janitorial company with 50 employees and also they were both very active in our local, regional and national church organization. So, I was raised to do multiple things and determine which one determines your attention and a discipline for planning and preparation. My sisters and I had a pattern and two models of what a multi-gifted and balancing act between work and play looks like. I go to bed early and then wake up while it is still dark to plan for my day along with prayer, replying to emails and responding to client requests. It is a way of life for me. Fortunately, I have a husband who supports my efforts 1000% but even after retirement from my career, I have to practice balance in work and play even today in my business. LL: You have traveled the world singing, how does that impact your life? JR:When you have traveled the world singing on different stages, small, large, in buildings and sometimes I’ve sang in homes, you learn to expect the unexpected, you learn to be
comfortable in your own skin, trust God and your gift. You learn to communicate with the audience. You learn to adjust because each and every time will be different and I’m nervous even to this day but I go for it and give it all I have. LL: You are known for non-fiction work but what has been the greatest experience in this genre? JR: Teaching and training from my own materials is the best thing about my non-fiction work. When I teach a writing class, I have my own book and workbook. When I am coaching someone about promotion, I’ve written my own book on book promotion. I speak and present from my own inspirational books, for example, I spoke at a women’s tea on Queen Esther and it was from my book, Queen that I released at the same event. So I love teaching and training from my books and ideas. LL: How did your previous professional experiences prepare you for your work and life as a publisher? JR: My professional career was as a teacher/librarian. That is probably one of the biggest and demanding public service oriented professions ever. All day for 30+ years it was about “how can I help you?” or “what do you need?” or “what are you looking for information about?” or “what kind of books do you like to read?” I’ve asked these questions from the 1st kindergartener to the lawyers and doctors that I served at university THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

and corporate libraries. So, #1 is Service and #2 is working as a team to help the vision come to pass. No matter if the vision is passing a test, winning a legal case, solving a medical problem, writing a book or starting a business, my motto is let’s make it happen. LL: You have written a romance fiction series, what was your motivation and what has been women’s reactions to this series? JR: First, I have read more than 100 romance fiction books. When I was go to my sister’s hair salon, we would have a book exchange in the salon and I would read a 300 page book under the dryer because I read so fast. Secondly, I wanted to try my hand at it but also wanted to control the story, characters, narrative, plot, scenery, beginning and ending so the only way to do it to write it. So I did. As far women’s reactions, I had extremely emotional reactions to the books that I write. They love the book overall but hate some of the characters and swoon over some of the other characters. It is wonderful. LL: How important is it for you to intertwine your faith into your series? JR:Everything to me because I live, move, breath, work and survive by my faith. I believe that most people do even if they don’t speak it out loud or shout it from the rooftop. My faith is what keeps me grounded, with a relative amount of sanity and subsequently, hopeful. So, because it is a part of the very fiber of my being, then Faith will come out in my writings. I write from my heart, I write about what I know and have experienced, I write my mind, will and emotions, thus, my writing is me. Faith resides in me, so it will ultimately come in my writing. Not everyone enjoys seafood, but it has become one of my favorite styles of food. While traveling through the small town of Burlington North Carolina one weekend, I saw a billboard of a restaurant called the “Red Crab’’. It is located at 3123 garden Road in Burlington. I had heard of this restaurant but have never visited as I’m very skeptical of chain food places. However, this turned out to be one of the best experiences and seafood tastings that I’ve had in a long time. Upon arrival the atmosphere had a boat and a huge shark in the middle of the place. It looked like a great area for picture poses. Since, this was my first time visiting the server was very informative of what choices were good to choose. To begin, I had the fried boom boom shrimp appetizer served with a sweet sauce and mini fried crab cakes. They were huge and crispy. The selection of food choices were interesting. They came in three steps. Step #1, you got your choice of crab, shrimp, snow crab legs, blue crab, mussels, (green or black) lobster tails, scallops, or clams. Step #2, you then choose your sauce; cajun, lemon pepper, garlic butter, juicy special or all of the above. And finally the last step #3, you were able to choose the spice level which includes; no spicy, mild, medium, hot or extra hot. There were other weekly specials too. After having a difficult time choosing because photos looked so appealing, I chose the Red Crab special #2, with crab legs, potato sausage, and shrimp. Everything had a specific flavor that beats out any seafood boil that I’ve ever had. My mouth was watering with every bite. I definitely will be craving this chain restaurant on a regular basis. I give this location, service and food a five star.
