elieve it or not, summer’s drawing to a close, and what is usually the busiest wedding season was this year extremely quiet. But we refused to take what could have been a lovely, long summer break because, as we imagined, excited couples were still finding ways to overcome whatever obstacles stood between them and their weddings. And suppliers were certainly rallying round to ensure they found whatever they would need.
IN AN AUTUMN HAZE
Which means this issue includes wedding stories from couples who celebrate their first anniversaries this year, and couples who proved that love conquers all by holding their wedding this summer, no matter what. As a symbol of optimism and ingenuity this couldn’t get much better and we congratulate those on their first happy year, and those whose courage and imagination allowed them to follow their dreams. In future there will be adjustments to be made. But we see this as an opportunity to make the very most of how you celebrate such an important event; a reason to really push the boat out and make every detail count. If you’re reluctant to downsize, there’s always the possibility of having a one-yearon party, where you can remember your day with a grand gathering of all the friends you wanted to have with you. Nothing keeps romance alive like celebrating a wedding anniversary, as if it was the original day. Meanwhile, we will be happy to make space in future issues to include your stories about how circumstances upset your plans and what you did to make your wedding the best it could be.
“Love will turn your world around, and that world will last forever.” - From the musical Aspects of Love
In these changing times it takes a leap of faith to go for it, and to find the most marvellous ways to say I DO.
The IDO team Please note that all weddings held during the Covid 19 pandemic observed the mandatory regulations that were in place at the time. And that, as these are constantly changing, different rules may apply for different weddings and dates.

IF A JOB NEEDS DOING MARRIAGES HAVE ENDED OVER PILES OF LAUNDRY, DISHES LEFT TO DRAIN AND WHO PUTS THE RUBBISH OUT.
I
t may take many years for the combined effects of one partner not doing their share, and the realisation that it’s too late to change things now, to prompt someone walking out. And housework might not be the only factor in a marriage breakup. But years of imbalance in that area can eventually tip the scales too far. Couples in the 21st century have far less of a gender-based approach to the traditional ‘who-does-what’ than our grandparents had Small point here; if at any time you’ve detected a hint of such old-fashioned bias in your relationship consider how it might become a real problem once love is no longer blind.
The issue now is not who should do what, but who is best able to do a task. This will be based on talents, work and family demands, health concerns and all out unselfishness. But never imagine that just because one of you has always taken care of a certain job or project that is how it will always be. Circumstances can change, sometimes quite suddenly, sometimes more gradually. For this reason, taking turns at the nice and nasty jobs, and sharing everything, where practical, not only lightens the load but will be essential if there are changes in your partner’s health or circumstances.
6 I DO
Your priority from day one is to decide the best ways to keeping your home as you like it, bearing in mind that men and women do not necessarily see mess, or the methods for dealing with it, the same way. Sorry, but this is a fact. It’s no use expecting some people to automatically clear up as they go along when they either don’t notice what needs to be done, or are still feeling the self-satisfying glow of completing a previous chore and consider that’s it for today.
outside it. The real problems appear when one person feels they have to do an unfair share of it all. When this crops up there should be a discussion based not on what seems to be unfair but on how much the other person realises you have on your plate, work and time wise, compared with their own situation. Simply understanding who is putting the most of their non-working time into the house could help couples divide what needs doing, and the time they spend on it, more equally.
It is generally accepted that men expect to be asked if something needs doing, and here you have to establish your own boundaries for when asking becomes nagging. Women, on the other hand, can never understand how a man cannot see what needs to be done and just do it, without being asked. Women’s reputation for multi-tasking puts them at a disadvantage since they are naturally expected to complete far more in a day than men. Men, however have a tendency to spin out a job far longer than necessary, either because they are super efficient, or because they are spectacularly inefficient. They are also more likely to spend a lot of time afterwards drawing attention to the completed job, and less time than necessary clearing up, thoroughly. Everyone has different priorities when it comes to what needs doing in your home and
Like everything in a relationship managing your home needs support. Do as many of the everyday jobs as possible together. Plan bigger things well, look forward to them, do them because you will achieve something you seriously need, or have always wanted. Don’t put things off until you are both fed up and furious and they never get done. That is a sure way to build resentment. Promise yourselves a treat for when it’s finished and crack on. Finally, no one likes what they do being taken for granted, or being told that something they have put a lot of time and effort into has been done wrong. Show appreciation for what each other does, now and again. And remember, whatever you put into the care and maintenance of your home is also a sign of your love for each other and that’s always worth working for.

THE BRIDES ON OUR POPULAR BRIDAL FASHION PAGES PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT PART IN EACH ISSUE OF IDO. SO WE THINK THEY DESERVE A PAGE TO SHARE SOME OF THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THIS AND THAT.
We felt very honoured when our model, ROBY N Z AMMIT, turned up to this issue’s shoot, on her birthday! Where do you live? I live in Qrendi. Where would you like to live? My plan, at some point in the future is to relocate to Seoul in South Korea as I am completely fascinated by their culture and ways of life. What is the happiest job or career you could have? I graduated with a bachelor of science in Sociology two years ago, so my dream job would be applying my knowledge into bettering people’s lives by working with the United Nations. How do you like to relax? When I’m not working, I enjoy unwinding by drinking a glass of wine outdoors. I also enjoy working out in the gym and have recently taken up learning Korean in my spare time. Who are the people who make you happiest, and for what reason? My family (including my animals) are my constant source of joy and entertainment. There’s never a dull moment at home and they’re always around to make me laugh when I’m not feeling my best. What could the world do without, and what does it need more of? The world can definitely do without greed and egocentric mentalities. I believe this is where most of our problems stem from. We can do with more selflessness, especially in these times when it’s become increasingly important to care about the people around us. How do you feel about social media, and what do you mostly use it for? I believe that in modern times, social media has become an integral part of our everyday lives, with various social media platforms practically revolutionising the world. I use it daily to communicate with people and create content which I personally find very empowering.

Behind the veil COVERING OUR FACES IS BECOMING A THING BUT AN ATTRACTIVE AND SYMBOLIC VEIL HAS ALWAYS BEEN SPECIAL
T
he origins of wearing a veil go back to between 1,400 and 1,100BC, originally in Mesopotamia and the Greek and Persian empires. A veil was also the most prominent feature of a Roman bride‘s wedding. It was the deep yellow colour of a candle flame and designed to evoke the veil of a Roman priestess, Flaminica Dialis, who could not divorce her husband, the high priest of Jupiter. It was supposed to ward off evil eyes, ever open to the chance of ruining a superstitious Roman bride’s big day. The Romans thought of a bride being ‘clouded over with a veil‘ from the association of their verb nubere, to be married, with their word for cloud, nubes. Could this be what prompts today’s description of many brides as floating down the aisle like a cloud? This oldest piece in the bridal ensemble, allowed brides to be wrapped from head to toe to show they were being given to their grooms as untouched maidens. A bride would wear the face veil through the ceremony. Then either her father lifted it when presenting her to the groom, or the groom lifted it to symbolically consummate the marriage. The lifting of the veil may be ceremonially seen as the crowning event of the wedding, when the beauty of the bride is finally revealed to the groom and the guests. In modern weddings, this little ceremony may not happen and it may even be considered sexist for the bride to have her face covered. In fact, many veils are worn under a traditional tiara or floral headdress and simply hang from the top or the back. Another highly practical purpose for a heavy veil supposedly comes from the days when marriages were arranged. The groom was not permitted to lift the veil until the ceremony was
completely over. No doubt this saved many a young lady from permanent spinsterhood. In the 18th century, the veil with all its customs and traditions fell out of fashion. But then Queen Victoria married Prince Albert, in a white dress with all the trimmings and a veil flowing down her back. She was the first modern monarch to wear a veil to be married and set a trend that lasts to this day. For some, the veil can be a sentimental symbol of continuity. Many brides consider wearing their mother or even grandmother’s veil as a perfect example of the ‘something old’, ‘something borrowed’ that traditionally makes up a bride’s ensemble. And a veil can also be incorporated into a christening gown later, or hung over the first baby’s cot, or just kept for sentimental reasons or in case anyone else would like to borrow it. And for bride considering the full white wedding ceremony it is so romantic and as the crowning glory of a wedding dress; something all brides should seriously consider. CHOOSING Y OUR VEIL The first consideration is your dress. A veil needs to suit the style of the dress; whether it is classic, sophisticated, soft and romantic. Different shapes and lengths suit each one. If it is quite simple it will take an elaborate veil. If there is a lot of detailed embellishment, a simple, transparent veil will show it off best. The decoration should be neither too light nor too heavy. Embroidery, beading, pearls, lace can all complement your dress accordingly. The length, width, weight and fabric of the veil also depends the style of dress and the headpiece that it will be secured to. The shape of your face and your wedding-day hairstyle will ultimately influence how your veil looks. Decide on a hairstyle and try on veils with a similar one to judge the final effect. The colour is very important too. It could be exactly the same shade as your dress or lighter or darker. Plain or shimmery effects are both attractive, but think about how the lighting in the church and at the reception might affect the final look.

A DRESS MADE JUST FOR YOU SOME BRIDES CHOOSE TO MAKE THEIR OWN WEDDING DRESS, OR HAVE IT MADE FOR THEM, IN THEIR SEARCH FOR PERFECTION.
B
espoke wedding dresses are designed and made specifically for you. They are therefore likely to be very expensive. A made-to-measure wedding dress is custom made with the size perfectly tailored to a certain design. And, of course, if you have a dressmaker in the family, dozens of styles to suit all dreams and themes are available as paper patterns. You will need a lot of nerve and patience as the whole process, from design to completion can take anything from six months to a year, depending on the design, and the complexity of the dress, including added embellishments and details. For a bespoke dress you begin with design discussions with your designer. And for all dresses there will be important searches for fabric and A good designer will celebrate your unique figure and customize the gown to fit you perfectly. Instead of purchasing a dress to conform to your figure, why not build one from the ground up! Having a gown custom made ensures it will be comfortable and tailored to your body. Fashion doesn’t have to hurt. A beautiful bride can have a gown that is comfortable throughout the entire wedding day; from “getting ready” photos, to the last dance of the night. By working with a local designer, you are also supporting small business. Through your custom gown experience, you have the peace of mind of knowing exactly where your gown was made, and by whom. Not only that, but you ensure that your gown was not made for the masses. It was created just for you. Like you, it is one-of-a-kind.
A dress of your own I DO asked AGNES SALIBA, of Gaudi@JB Stores, why brides might like a dress made just for them. DO MANY BRIDES TODAY CHOOSE A BESPOKE WEDDING DRESS, COMPARED WITH 20 OR SO Y EARS AGO? Twenty years ago, there wasn’t the large market for ready-made dresses that there is nowadays, however, there is still a good percentage of brides who would prefer going for a bespoke dress. These brides will have a particular image in mind and know exactly what they want. If they are confident in the design, colour and material they are after, they will always go for an original bespoke dress. WHAT ARE THE FIRST THINGS BRIDES NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING MATERIALS AND TRIMMINGS FOR THEIR WEDDING DRESS? There are two main things all brides should consider when creating their own dress. Initially, they must decide on the season when the wedding will take place, whether it will be in summer or winter. The time of day is also important, whether it is in the morning or evening. Secondly is the style of the wedding. Brides would need to consider if their wedding will have a specific theme or touch such as modern, vintage, Victorian and so on. Once these factors have been decided, they can start to work on the style of the dress and gather the options available. WHAT TY PES OF FABRIC ARE MOST POPULAR LOCALLY ? The most popular are the plain fabrics which range from satin to duchess satin, silk, silk organza and even chiffons. To decorate the dress, they typically go for beautiful French lace, beaded material, embroidery tulle and even corded laces. WHICH FABRICS CREATE THE BEST EFFECTS FOR THE DIFFERENT STY LES BRIDES CAN CHOOSE? Glittered tulle is the latest and most popular type of fabric that is used at the moment along with nice beaded motifs. WHAT PRODUCTS AND SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE TO BRIDES WHO ARE THINKING OF HAVING A BESPOKE WEDDING DRESS? At Gaudi, we offer a wide range of exclusive fabrics and we offer the full service of creating the perfect wedding dress that the bride has always dreamt of. Our experienced team will guide the bride to choose the best material available to create the unique dress for her special day. We will present her with the quantity of the material necessary to make the complete dress. If the bride wishes to have her dress made to measure in house, we have our very own professional designers and experienced seamstresses who will help her, choose from an extensive range of materials available to create the right style, and put together her dream dress based on her budget, taste and figure. Once the bride has her ideal dress set, we will then help her to choose the colour and material for her bridesmaids’ dresses. Finally, we can go on further and create the perfect dresses for the mothers of both the bride and the groom and any other family members.

The best laid plans YOU’VE BEEN DREAMING OF PLANNING YOUR DREAM WEDDING FOREVER, WHY SHOULD SOMEONE ELSE TO DO IT FOR YOU?
W
ell, actually, wedding planners do not exactly plan your wedding. Obviously you do that. What they really do is help make all your plans and dreams come true as smoothly as possible. They are also a source of important information and could well remind you of the small details that are so easy to over look. A good wedding planner/organiser can knock hours off your planning time and Euros off your budget They are coordinators for all the services you need. He or she will ensure everyone involved, from catering, and the reception venue to transport and accommodation for foreign guests, understands what is required of them. The experts are nothing if not versatile and those who are not patient and charming with everyone from guests to service providers do not last long! More often than not the couple are not the only people involved in their wedding. Family members like to contribute as well, and see their ideas merge into the splendour of the occasion. Even when this is welcome conflict can easily occur in all the excitement. A wedding organiser is often a good listener who can tactfully find solutions to keep everyone happy. And while you obviously have a clear vision of your perfect wedding, it is very easy to be side-tracked when turning these ideas into reality. Companies and individuals providing all the wedding services and items you will need will all be showing you the best they can offer, and you may be tempted to go over budget. Your planner has your back and will make sure you don’t get carried away on unnecessary extras that will make little or no difference to the overall effects of your big day. They will also make certain you get the service you expect, because most wedding service providers realise that if they do not deliver the planner will think twice about recommending them if a couple asks for their advice. Of course, online ideas, information, wedding items and the input of family and friends are so readily available, you might ask if a wedding organiser is worth it? Remember, this is someone who, on top of everything else, can take over your need to remember and check every little detail, leaving you free to actually enjoy your preparations. You will soon realise what a life saver that could be. Someone who understands what you want and not only pulls out all the stops to achieve your dreams, but also has a skillful way of anticipating possible complications and a plan B in hand, just in case, could be one of the most important people in ensuring your wedding really will be the best day of your life.
Y OU SHOULD CONSIDER A WEDDING ORGANISER IF:
◊ You both have full-time jobs that will prevent you from holding meetings with providers whenever you need to.
◊ You don’t have close family and friends with any experience of organising a wedding to call on.
◊ You are planning a wedding with a particular theme or at an out of the ordinary location.
◊ You are thrilled about the whole thing but secretly worried about everything it entails.
◊ You know what you want but not how to get it. ◊ You are already considering eloping.
HOW TO CHOOSE Y OUR WEDDING PLANNER
◊ Word of mouth; if you have been to a brilliant wedding find out who
◊ ◊ ◊ ◊
was responsible. But consider other options too, so you have someone who you can easily communicate with. Ask for, and check references. If you have personal preferences for designers, florists, caterers and venue, make sure he or she is happy to work with them, and visa versa. Be absolutely clear about the nature and extent of the services your organiser will provide. Different planners and organisers can be involved in individual aspects of the event, from running the whole shebang to simply being there on the day.
◊ Make your choice based on the type of assistance you think you will need and, very importantly, on whether you think this is someone you can get on with and trust. ◊ And, as soon as you make your choice, decide payment terms immediately.

Sarah & Fabian 8 August 2020 Sarah Cachia, 26, a lawyer and ballet teacher, and Fabian Demicoli, 31, Head of EU Affairs and Communications at SME Chamber and a part-time producer/journalist, were married in the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Valletta

A PROPOSAL DOWN UNDER fter a year and a half together, Fabian and Sarah bought their house. Sarah hinted a lot about the famous engagement ring and the couple often joked about it. But after a fake proposal had convinced supporters at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Fabian knew a grand gesture was needed. Sarah loves Andre Rieu so he planned to propose at his concert in London. But at the same time Sarah’s work, took her to Thailand. So Fabian surprised her with tickets to Australia; then tickets to Andre Rieu’s concert at the RAC arena in Perth. There, during the intermission, an arena coordinator came to take a photo for them. Fabian went down on one knee and produced the ring, in front of hundreds of people! It was surely a grand proposal, in the fifth continent they had travelled to together. »

» Following their simple theme of classic and elegant, Charlene, from Foilplus, helped the couple create invitations comprising small cards in pockets. They had gold initials and wording, and included a sketch of Fort St Elmo, their wedding venue. Z OOMING IN ON THE CEREMONY Fabian and Sarah wanted a church in Valletta for their guests’ convenience. They visited the Basilica and liked that it is different from other churches not being in the form of a cross, so it looks bigger. “Photos also look lovely as it is full of natural light” they added. Their ceremony was very special because Fr Jethro, Fabian’s childhood friend, married them. “It was very soothing to have a very close friend guide us through this journey”, they added.
» Maria, Sarah‘s pianist during her ballet classes, Stefan an amazing violinist and Dorothy Bezzina, provided some magical music. Sarah loved her Lussano wedding dress, from EVA MARIEE Bridal Exclusive the minute she saw it. It had a flattering blush undertone and unique lace detailing. The long veil she wanted, also by Eva Mariee, had crystals scattered along the sides, bringing out the sparkles in the dress perfectly. Her headpiece was handmade by Silvana Cini from SC Bridal Designs. Sarah kept her accessories
simple with earrings and a bracelet from Swarovski. And she carried a bouquet by Debbie from Romano Cassar, which was white with touches of blush pink to match her dress. Fabian chose a light weight blue tuxedo, worn with a blue and grey waistcoat from The Groom Collection. Sarah and Fabian hesitated about engraving the day on their rings, due to the uncertainty of the situation, but they went ahead. The date 08.08.2020 is now very special. »
» The day before the wedding they discovered they had to reduce their guest list to 300 guests. And many guests said they would be unable to attend, so a groomsmen Victor Abela, set up a live link. “We had people from all over the world watching! That was very special”, they said. A VENUE WITH EVERY THING The Heritage Malta site, Fort St Elmo, with its view and history was just the venue Sarah and Fabian wanted, and they opted for Piazza d’Armi. Overall décor was by Ruben Caruana from Ruben Décor, who together with wedding planner and bestman James Cassar from MYeventplanner, came up with endless innovative ways to comply with the ever-changing Covid 19 mitigation requirements, and still keep everything personalised. James Caterers provided an all inclusive menu with food and drinks, and were totally trusted with the cake, a white and gold creation including a logo and sugar paste
flowers because in August fresh flowers wilt and the cake was on show from the start. A great idea was the Selfee Booth, with the door of the chapel as a backdrop. It takes photos and boomerangs which reach the guests directly, via message or e-mail, avoiding unnecessary print outs. And Sarah and Fabian have access to the whole photo album online. The traditional guest book was replaced by a world map carved on a wooden board.Guests signed it and the couple cannot wait to hang it in their new home! Fabian and Sarah’s first dance, was to You Are The Reason by Calum Scott and Leona Lewis, played and sung live by their good friend Amber together with Gianluca Bezzina. Hours of music followed from Kevin Paul Calleja, then Brass House Unit, Gianluca, Gloriana and Janvil, guest Ludwig joined in sometimes. Claudette Pace (Buttigieg) singing Desire was also a hit! The whole venue was immersed in music everyone loved it. »
"We couldn’t stop smiling and we still cannot believe how perfect the day was and that we are married.” Sarah and Fabian

» CONQUERING COVID 19 “We tried to make Covid as fun as possible. We were obliged to take our guests’ temperatures and we insisted that ours was taken too, and made sure to get a photo”, the couple explained. Hand sanitizers had to be everywhere, so bottles of sanitsers with personalised labels, were placed all around. Sarah and Fabian’s heartfelt thanks go to so many people who helped them along the way: Probeauty by Tiziana, for Sarah’s beautiful makeup; Sarah’s hairstylist and childhood friend Donna Cutajar, of Omorfia’ Parlour; Sarah’s mother for dressing up Chico and Lacey for their wedding photos, and everyone who went way out of their way to make the wedding possible in the circumstances. They want to stress to all couples to go ahead with their plans. “We promise that it will be the best day ever. We had a great time, Although it was not exactly what we had in mind 18 months ago, it did turn out to be exactly what we dreamed of!”

Malisse Ann & Reuben 4 October 2019 Malisse Ann Grixti, 27, and Reuben Frendo, 33, joint owners of Golden Edge Event Services were married in Santa Maria Parish Church, Mqabba.
CANDLES FOR A SPECIAL TOUCH oth being in the wedding business Malisse Ann and Reuben certainly knew how to create and organise their special day, beginning with their invitations. They designed a simple yet elegant wedding invitation, which included a touch of mauve, the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses. Foilplus understood just what they wanted, and within two weeks the design and prints were ready for them. The couple chose October as a less busy month for their wedding ceremony, which was held in Santa Maria Parish Church, Mqabba. The Mass was conducted by the Mqabba Parish Priest. “During the ceremony we had two small candles, with our initials and one big candle with our names and the name of Jesus. We both took our candles and lit the big one; representing two persons becoming one with the presence of Jesus”, they remembered. Malisse Ann wore a beautiful bridal gown, sewn by her mother, Elizabeth. The material was Ivory Mikado, from Alamango Textiles. The style was classic with modern details, including a high neckline of chiffon lace, Swarovski crystals and over 250 buttons, each individually stitched by her mother, as a detail at the back. Her veil, also sewn by her mother, was held in place by a crown from Mariage. A set of Swarovski Louison stud-pierced earrings and bracelet, received as a wedding gift from her sister, and sophisticated satin shoes from Natasha’s His and Hers complemented her dress. Reuben’s outfit, and those of his groomsmen, also came from Natasha’s His and Hers. »

» Malisse Ann carried a bouquet by Seven Petals Floral Studio. And the couple exchanged rings from Alencia. And at the end of the ceremony they were driven by Elite Wedding Chauffeur Services to their reception. A VENUE FOR ALL SEASONS They had picked Palazzo Nobile for its beautiful gardens and classic interior. “Since we chose October we had our minds at rest that in case of bad weather we had a good backup plan at no additional costs”, they said. They had set up the decorations, from Golden Edge Event Services, the day before with the help of family and friends. These included a lounge area, lighting, chandeliers and a Cinderella carriage photo and video booth. »

» Their guests enjoyed Busy Bee’s catering and wedding cake, a simple four-layer cake, flavoured with almond and Bacio and decorated with fresh flowers, together with a pretty Candy Table, also from Golden Edge Event Services. An awesome vibe and great atmosphere was created by The Crowns and Chris Brown (DJ) extended that vibe during the afterhours by playing some great tunes. Instead of the traditional souvenirs Malisse Ann and Reuben gave a donation to the Hospice Malta. And their guests received a thank you gift of organza pouches containing five different flavoured perlini representing the five wedding wishes: health, wealth, happiness, fertility and long life. »

“Everything was great and above expectation.” – Malisse Ann & Reuben » Thanks also to Jennifer the Makeup Artist, a longtime friend, who knew exactly what Malisse Ann wanted, for giving her the natural look Reuben had requested and doing an excellent job for the whole bridal team, to Moira Stafrace for her beautiful music and singing in the church, Malisse Ann’s aunty, Carmeline Salerno, from Interbute, for the bridal team’s up dos – each member had a style to suit their dress design, and to Malisse Ann’s mother, who not only made her dress, but also those of the bridesmaids and her own.

THE COUPLE
Chantelle & Dylan 18 July, 2020 Chantelle Barbara, 26, a kindergarten educator, and Dylan Mifsud, 27 software developer, were married in Saint Anne Church, Zebbiegh, Mgarr.
A PROPOSAL ON A PLATE aving met when they were only 16, Chantelle and Dylan practically grew up together. Neither of them knew what the future held. But, on Chantelle’s 24th birthday, Dylan ordered dinner in the restaurant of the hotel where they were staying. “I had a feeling that he was going to propose, and when it was time for desert the waiter came over with a plate, and on it was written ‘Will You Marry Me?’ together with a ring. Obviously I said yes and a few months after we started to plan the wedding”, Chantelle remembered. The couple didn’t exactly have a theme but they wanted something soft, romantic and inspired by nature, with lots of greenery. First they chose their wedding invitations; something simple, modern and original on parchment paper with their logo printed on the front. They looked for samples of logos with green leaves and then, together with their suppliers, Invites For You, they created their logo.
H
MARRIED WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS The couple chose Saint Anne Church, Zebbiegh, Mgarr because it is very beautiful and they really liked its quiet location. In addition they were able to choose any time they wanted to have the Mass. The wedding ceremony was special for the couple because it was during the difficult times of COVD-19. But their families and friends still came to see them get married. “We would like to thank them all because they made our day extra special for us”, the couple confirmed. »

» Their priest Fr Jimmy prepared them for the day. “He made us feel very comfortable and calm during the ceremony, and since he knew us, he made it extra special because he could talk about us and what we want for our future as a married couple”, they added. Chantelle wore the first dress she tried on from EVA MARIEE Bridal Exclusive. “It was what I always dreamed of wearing on my wedding day, and I didn’t look for any other dresses”, she said. The style was Poppy because the lace in the bodice had a poppy flower pattern. It had a statement illusion bodice with intricate beadwork and a fine organza skirt. In addition she wore a floral headband with soft silver leaves, a cathedral veil edged with lace and a pair of teardrop stud earrings, also from EVA MARIEE. She carried a bouquet, by Anna Zammit, which comprised pink and white flowers with a lot of green leaves, as Chantelle had said she wanted the leaves to really stand out. Dylan wore a fitted navy blue suit with black satin lapels, a patterned
navy blue waistcoat and a black bow tie, from Bortex. A GARDEN RECEPTION After seeing photos of the renovations at Villa Mdina the couple fell in love with it. With ample indoor and outdoor spaces, a modern, beautifully designed garden with lots of greenery and a gazebo it was perfect. In addition Commander Jay Events & Entertainment created the amazing décor. Guests were treated to a cocktail bar by James (the mixologist) and catering by Busy Bee, who were also responsible for a very original and modern cake. This was set on black iron stands, surrounded by flowers, also by Anna Zammit, and topped with a black cake topper incorporating the words Mr& Mrs Mifsud. Entertainment included a mirror photo booth for the guests to take photos to place one in the guest book and take another home as a reminder of this special wedding. »

» There was also the first dance. “Our first dance was something special for us because we had never slow danced before and we didn’t want to take lessons either”, the couple explained. They chose the song Perfect, by Ed Sheeran because the lyrics remind them a lot of their love story. Chantelle continued, “From months before I kept telling my husband to try something out on our own and he kept telling me ‘later on’. Three days before our wedding we focused on it and we created our dance, which made it much more special since we did it alone together. In addition, we had Airport Impressions and the singer, Errol, very kindly sent us a recording of their singing, so we could follow it better, while practising.” “We ended up having a concert instead of a normal wedding because both the guests and the band were really enjoying singing and dancing and neither of them wanted to stop. It was something that we will never forget”, they said. THE EX TRA TOUCHES The couple planned every little detail of their wedding on their own but their families helped a lot with the invitations and souvenirs. “On the day we had Jurgen Briffa as our wedding organiser which was a great help,” they said. Thanks also go to Gabrielle Zammit Grungo, Chantelle’s makeup artist, photographer Clive Xuereb, and all their suppliers, because although they had to move the wedding several times, they were all a great help and very understanding. And each time they relive the memories of their special day with a video it will be thanks to Videographer Ernest Vella.

Sylvana & George 6 July 2019 Sylvana Cini, 30, a music teacher, and George Attard, 32 , who works at Betsson were married in Xaghra Basilica, Gozo
Blessed with a lifetime of happiness Photography | Albert Camilleri
CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL loving bond led to Sylvana and George planning their future together. In December, 2018, a week before Christmas, they went to Valletta to buy Christmas presents. When they were heading to the shops George suggested going to the Upper Barrakka. Sylvana refused because she wanted to go shopping first. But George promised they would not be long, and they went. While Sylvana was looking at the harbour, George took out a ring and proposed. “With all my happy emotions I forgot about my planned shopping and opted for a good dinner instead. It was such a wonderful evening”, she said. Sylvana and George’s main goal was to make sure their whole wedding felt personal, not only for them but also for their guests. There was no particular theme they just wanted a modern wedding. For their wedding invitations they found a lot of help from Charlene of Foilplus, who understood what they wanted from day one and gave them her professional and artistic advice. Together with their ideas they came up with an amazing result.
A
A VERY SPECIAL CEREMONY Apart from Sylvana, being a Xaghra resident, the beauty of the Basilica made it an easy and obvious choice for the couple’s marriage. “The ceremony was so special. The wedding sermon was based on us and we still remember the words and advice given”, Sylvana remembers. “The music was important to me so every musical piece was chosen with a purpose and had a special message. Apart from the emotions we had while exchanging our vows, the Communion was another affecting moment. Obviously Piccole Stelle, a choir of which I am director was part of our ceremony, and when I saw them singing, with shining eyes and from the bottom of their hearts I couldn’t stop myself crying”, she continued. »

» Sylvana wanted a dress in which she would be comfortable and could be herself and the team from WeddingBells made sure of that. “I wore a set of earrings which were a Christmas gift from the children in Piccole Stelle”, Sylvana explained. George chose a blue suit, from Cefai Formal Wear, and wore a set of cufflinks with the couples initials engraved on them. Sylvana is allergic to some flowers, but Fleur at Floral décor, made some mini bouquets for her to test, and combined her choices into the actual bouquet. A PERFECT MODERN RECEPTION George and Sylvana chose Ivory Suite Terrace for their reception because they could be both inside or outside. They planned how they wanted the terrace to be, together with Marlina, who was responsible for their décor. George has an eye for detail and created, from scratch, the main bar, made of wood, their photo booth, which was covered with turf and flowers, and produced beautiful photos, and their guest book – a drop frame for guests to post messages written on wooden hearts. They also had a cocktail bar, provided by Kombi Bar, to help their guests to chill on the hot summer day. The couple wanted their menu to compliment their modern standing-wedding, and George wanted live-cooking stations. Corinthia Caterers turned his ideas into a reality. »

“We are honoured and grateful that we had wonderful guests to celebrate our love with us.” – Sylvana and George
» Sylvana added: “We opted for a plain wedding cake, but I wanted the cake table decorations to be flowers and candles so Marlina created a circular ornament just for us and covered it with flowers.” The music at the venue was by Novel Band, and the couple’s first dance was very special. They chose the song Amazed and had synchronized fireworks. “Our closest friends surprised us with floor sparklers which made it more special”, they added. SPECIAL THANKS George and Sylvana have special thanks for their families, maid of honour, best man, bridesmaids and groomsman who were outstanding. Adriana Scicluna, whose natural, beautiful make up stayed in place all day; George Saguna and videographer Ricky Bugeja for making them feel so comfortable, and wedding planner Carmelino Refalo for his experienced advice while planning their journey, and making sure everything ran smoothly on the day. He nailed it. For the couple the ceremony served as the heartbeat of their big day, walking down the aisle, exchanging vows and rings and all the feelings that evokes. It doesn’t get more real than literally promising to spend the rest of your life with someone. It wasn’t until their joy-filled spectacular wedding day was over that they realised how right everyone was, who said it would fly by in an instant.
