magine a glowing bay or body of water that looks like it’s from a fairy tale. These enchanting places are known as bioluminescent bays. And as you can imagine, they are truly breathtaking. Similar to fireflies, these remarkable waters are brought to life by a chemical reaction inside the cells of tiny, glowing plankton. The plankton uses the light to scare away predators, find food, and communicate with other organisms. Bioluminescence boat tours are incredibly popular. And we recommend that all boaters cross this natural phenomenon off their bucket list, as it’s something you can’t replicate anywhere else. The Best Bioluminescent Boating Spots Bioluminescent bays are incredibly rare, and there are only a few places in the world where you can find them. Unfortunately, you can’t swim in most of them, as it harms sea life, wildlife, and humans. However, you can visit them by boat. Let’s break down some of bioluminescent boating locations:

1. Laguna Grande, Puerto Rico Did you know that Puerto Rico has three bioluminescent bays? One is called Laguna Grande, also known as Puerto Rico’s glowing lake. From San Juan to these eastern shores, it’s only a 45-minute drive away. Therefore, they’re a top-rated tourist attraction.
We recommend exploring this beautiful wonder by paddling through a canal with mangroves. Laguna Grande’s waters glow year-round, so you can visit whenever is convenient for you. 2. Mission Bay, San Diego The bioluminescence displays at San Diego’s Mission Bay and Torrey Pines Beach are breathtaking. They glow because of red tides, which are caused by algae blooms. During the day, the waves look red, and the tides appear neon blue at night. Note that this natural phenomenon only happens occasionally, as it depends on the movements in the water and other environmental factors. Therefore, you must check local surf reports before planning your trip. Generally, summertime is the best time to catch a glimpse. 3. Mosquito Bay, Puerto Rico Mosquito Bay is another one of Puerto Rico’s bioluminescent wonders, located on the island of Vieques. Visitors travel there by ferry or small plane, as it’s farther from San Juan, a popular tourist destination. This glowing bay is truly remarkable and has won awards for its natural beauty. In fact, it was voted the world’s brightest bioluminescent bay in 2006 by the Guinness Book of World Records. To explore this wonder, you

Indian River Lagoon, Florida An amazing bioluminescent boating adventure lies near Titusville at the Indian River Lagoon in Florida (but it’s only there from June to September). The glow comes from dinoflagellate organisms (glowing plankton) and comb jellies in the water. You can also sometimes see dolphins and manatees, making it a once-in-a-lifetime experience! This Indian River Lagoon is also toured via kayak, which gets you close to all the action. The best time to book your bioluminescent boat tour is during — or right before/after — a new moon, which enhances the shimmering effects. Also, remember that rain and storms can make the bioluminescence less visible. If you’re concerned, ask the tour company for their recommendations. 5. Manialtepec Lagoon, Mexico The Puerto Escondido area in southern Mexico is home to the mangrove-lined Manialtepec Lagoon. It’s one of Mexico’s finest bioluminescent bays, and it’s easy to see why! September is the best
time to visit, and we recommend visiting during a new moon to enhance the glow. Once you arrive, you can take a small boat tour to the Oaxaca Coast (where the lagoon is located). Not only is it a popular surfing spot, but you can see many varieties of bird species as well. There are also ample tourist activities — like horseback riding — so you can spend your days exploring and then catch the bioluminescent views at night. Fill a medium-sized sauce pot 3/4 the way with water, and heat over medium-high. Add the seafood seasoning to the boiling pot of water. Add the shrimp and cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until completely done. As soon as the shrimp are done, plunge them into an ice water bath to stop the cooking and cool them off. When the shrimp are completely cool, strain them and put them into a medium-sized mixing bowl. Add the citrus, sweet pepper, red onion, olive oil, lime juice, cilantro and avocado. Season the ingredients to taste with salt and pepper. Stir to combine ingredients. Serve ceviche with chips.

Mercury Marine & Alliant Energy renewable partnership receives regulatory approval - Ledgeview Solar Project to be operational in Spring 2024

(Nov. 28, 2023) – Mercury Marine, a division of Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC), will advance the 5-megawatt (MW) Ledgeview Solar Project with Alliant Energy after the utility received approval to partner on the project from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin. The 32-acre project in eastern Fond du Lac County will further Mercury Marine’s sustainability initiatives and the region’s growing commitment to renewable energy. It’s the first project to receive approval under the Alliant Energy® Renewable Energy Partner tariff. “We’re excited to have received regulatory approval for this project and advance our commitment to a more sustainable future,” said John Buelow, Mercury Marine president. “Our investment in this solar infrastructure, combined with our other solar investments, will provide clean, renewable energy and
propel us toward our goal to derive 50% of our electricity usage from renewable sources by the end of 2030.” The project, which is expected to be operational next spring, will include more than 12,000 solar panels generating enough electricity to power approximately 1,300 homes annually, enough to offset approximately 10% of the electricity Mercury uses on its Fond du Lac campus. The array will be located on privately-owned land south of Highway 23, just east of County Road UU. As we wind down 2023 and start looking towards the impending winter weather season, anglers visiting the Nature Coast before the start of the New Year will be delighted to know that there are still a plethora of inshore angling opportunities due in large part to the extended Fall season that we are currently experiencing. Higher than normal air temperatures along with 74° water temps have been a recipe for incredible fishing along the flats of Crystal River and Homosassa for Redfish, Speckled, Trout, Sheepshead, Black Drum, and Snook.
For those anglers looking to conquer multiple species off a bucket list targeting areas of exposed oyster bars along with sand and mud flats using Live Shrimp or Shrimp Imitation lures will offer anglers opportunities to catch a variety of different species all in one sitting. As the warming of the day occurs brown shrimp will appear from there over night burrows and begin roaming along the bars and flats searching out microscopic food items. Stalking these same areas are hungry predatory fish looking for an easy meal.
As we all know this glorious weather pattern will not last forever but according to records of the past and good rub from our Crystal Ball here’s what our fishing forecast will look like as we wrap up an incredible year of fishing here along the Nature Coast. Inshore Expectations: It’s preached throughout the year on my boat and all of my partner guides boats that the winter season can be by far the best season of the year for inshore fishing. Reason being is that the Nature Coast rarely if ever sees a major prolonged cold blast so our flats remain at a constant temperature that’s comfortable to our local shallow water species such as Redfish, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Speckled Trout and Snook. A fun way to fish oyster bars is to actually anchor on top of a bar at a higher out going tide and sight fish species that are gradually coming off the bar due to the receding tide. Obviously, this can be a challenge based on the tide but stalking schools of Snook and Redfish roaming around the perimeter of a bar is way easier to fish then targeting these same fish when they are directly on top of a snag proven oyster bar. Fly Fishing Expectations: Hands down this is the time of year you want to be here along the Nature Coast if you’re an avid fly fishing enthusiast or even just a beginner. Whether your interest is sight fishing Redfish in ankle deep water or taking a stab at a massive resident Crystal River Tarpon or even hooking up with your first saltwater fish on fly as Ladyfish and Jack Crevalle will be in abundance NOW! is a
with Captain Rick Grassett You may find reds along with big trout concentrated in potholes, along the edges of bars or tailing on shallow grass flats on negative low tides this month. This is a good month for catch and release snook action around lighted docks in the ICW. Some lights will also have trout and reds making it possible to get a dock “slam”. There may also be good action in the coastal gulf with false albacore (little tunny), Spanish mackerel and tripletail, depending on conditions. However, catch and release snook fishing around lighted docks can be good this month unless it gets too cool. I won’t target snook following a strong cold front or if the water dips below 60 degrees, since they may be stressed at that time. However, it can be very good in December under normal conditions. Larger baitfish will thin out and snook will gorge themselves on glass minnows and small shrimp in the ICW at night. I like docks that have a good tidal flow and deep water under them. CAL jigs with shad tails and jerk worms, DOA Tiny TerrorEyz and DOA Shrimp are my favorite lures for snook at night. Fly anglers should do well with sink tip fly lines and small white flies. Fish peak tidal flows for the fastest action. You might find reds in potholes or along the edges of flats and bars on negative low tides. They may also tail on shallow grass when the tide is low. Weedless rigged CAL shad tails and 4” jerk worms, DOA Shrimp and lightly weighted flies with weed guards will work well in

that situation. As the tide rises, reds will spread out and feed on shallow flats. You may also find them around docks this month. I usually let the stage of the tide tell me where to look for reds. You may also find big trout in skinny water this month in many of the same areas where you find reds. The same lures and techniques that I use for reds will also work for trout in the same areas. You should also find trout on deep grass flats this month along with blues, flounder or pompano. Blues may sometimes feed on the surface, so bird activity may give their presence away. Pompano may skip when you drift or run past them and when that happens, circle back upwind and drift through the area casting ahead of your drift. Flounder prefer a mix of sand and grass, particularly in potholes or on the edges of bars. I like to drift and cast ahead of my drift with CAL jigs and a variety of plastic tails or DOA Deadly Combos. Fly anglers should score with sink tip fly lines and weighted flies, like Clousers or my Grassett Deep Flats Bunny fly, which behaves like a jig with a shad tail. I like to fish shallow flats for reds and snook and deep grass flats that are close to passes, on points and along sand bars for trout, blues, flounder and pompano in December. There should still be some action in the coastal gulf with Spanish mackerel, blues, false albacore and tripletail. Rough or cold water later in the month may slow the action and move fish south or offshore. Look for terns either diving or hovering low over the surface

West Central Florida Southwest Coast great time to visit the Nature Coast for a day of fly-fishing. Two species of fish that are often overlooked in favor of more “Instagram” worthy species are Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish. If you put both of those species side by side the first thing you will notice is a forked tail that’s built for speed and quick burst during the fight. Both of these fish will readily take a fly, which is why they’re some of my favorites and lately my anglers and I have had a blast fishing smaller white Gurglers on the surface. Let me be the first to tell you the violent strikes that come from these fast paced fish is an absolute joy to watch. On the more technical side Redfish will always be a favorite of fly anglers as we go into the winter months. Our local waters are at their most clean and pristine this time of year making sight fishing for those Bronze Bombers so much fun. Anglers who have been honing in their fly-casting skills all summer long will find targeting our local Redfish population to be challenging yet rewarding in so many ways. I would compare fishing for these fish during the winter months to the same as hunting for turkeys without the blind. IN THE END ITS ALWAYS A BLAST FISHING THE NATURE COAST! SOME MONTHS, WEEKS, AND DAYS ARE JUST A LITTLE MORE REWARDING!!

Southwest Florida of the water to find albies, blues and mackerel feeding on the surface. Once you’ve found them, cast top water plugs or CAL jigs with shad tails to catch them. Fly anglers should score with glass minnow fly patterns, poppers or Crease flies. Sometimes top water plugs or fly poppers will draw fish to the surface, especially over structure. You’ll need to add wire or heavy fluorocarbon to your leader when blues and mackerel are around. Look for tripletail around crab trap floats or channel markers. Once you’ve located a fish, work back into the wind or current with an electric trolling motor to get into casting range and cast a DOA shrimp, a weedlessrigged CAL shad tail or lightly weighted fly with a weed guard to them. Try to make your first shot count since they are much tougher to catch once they know you’re there. There will be lots of options in December, although weather becomes more of a factor. When fishing flats, I usually let conditions and the stage of the tide determine when, where and what I will target. I like to fish the coastal gulf for false albacore and tripletail whenever conditions are good. Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by agricultural, industrial and residential runoff, toxic spills and discharges, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation, please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!

We are now into both our sailfish and swordfish peak seasons. Sailfishing is typically November through April. This November started out great, but December so far has been disappointing. The fishing the last few days has been poor, but I am sure that this next cold front coming this week will pick things right back up. We just started to get good conditions again with North current and blue water and yesterday we saw quite a bit of bait (mostly flyers) getting chased around. These conditions plus the cold fronts will drive more sailfish into our waters. When the weather has been cooperative, we have taken advantage of the swordfishing. We caught swordfish on our past 6 trips with the exception of one trip and the conditions that day were not very good. We have been having a couple of multiple fish days, catching 2 or more swordfish per day. Average size was about 125 pounds but we did
have one trip where we had a 350 pounder on the leader several time so I guess you can constitute that as a leader release. There was also a 700 pound plus swordfish caught a week ago in the same area we fish in, so you just don’t know how big the next fish you are going to hook. The swordfishing will continue to stay good for quite a few more months. You just need to have the right weather conditions for it. As the title states, the holidays are here. With that said, there will be a lot of people visiting friends and family in South Florida. We are almost completely booked between Christmas and New Year’s (booked from Dec 19th through January 10th). The only days open in that time frame are Dec 24th and Dec 29th. If you have friends or family in town or simply want to go fishing, please contact us and get one of those dates before they get booked. Another great option for the Holidays is a gift certificate. Week report: November 27-30: I ended this month super busy and closing it out in a big way. In Monday I had Nathan from East central Florida. He’s been fishing with me for about 5 years now and dang it every time we fish either the weather stinks or the fishing is dead. Well, today the weather was great and with the moon phase I swore the Bonefishing would be on fire. Did you catch that? Anyway, it wasn’t. We had a shot at tailing permit to start the morning and then silence for a while until we went Oceanside and fished the shoreline of an island that usually produces if not for the shear amount of water we can cover. Here Nathan had a few shots at bonefish crossing along the shore and they wouldn’t eat. Then he spotted a single fish over rocks and reef. I poled him into position and he laid the fly just perfect, for a tiny barracuda to eat it in front of the bonefish. No! Then the little cuda jumps off, the fly drops and Nathan strips. That bonefish rushed the fly and ate it 15’ from the boat. It was awesome and that was our first fish in 5-6 trips. Wow what a relief. Later on we fished another flat that has been producing at the end of the tide and sure enough they were there, just one school not the numerous schools I’ve been seeing but Nathan stuck a nice tailing bonefish before the end of the trip. It was awesome!!! Whew, now Nathan and I can concentrate on fishing since our curse is over. On the last day of the month I fished with Supin and his parents neither of them had ever fished before. It was a two hour trip and they caught their first fish and plenty of jacks and snappers. What a month
it’s been and the season is just starting. It’s going to be a good season! Week report: November 19-25: The week of Thanksgiving always finds me busy, but boy this was another level. I had regular client, David and his friend Clay on Sunday for a six hour trip fly fishing for bonefish tarpon permit, and then a four hour trip in the afternoon with another regular client Mike . The morning had us finding a few tarpon which we had some shots at on fly and then losing two bonefish before heading in picking up Mike and focusing on bonefish. inexplicably the same spots that I fished with David and Clay and yielded two bonefish, ended up, proving a bonanza for Mike as he hooked six and landed four. The Following day Monday through Wednesday, Mike and I would fish full days. The first two days were in Biscayne Bay and Monday I looked for live pilchards, blacked out the well and live chummed channels. This was a blast as we watched yellow jacks exploding on the Bait and Mike casting to the schools and hooking up almost instantly on some of his casts. Tuesday was a bit slower thanks to some nasty wind so we decided Wednesday on our last day to fish flamingo in the Everglades. This was a blast as Mike had a ton of shots at redfish riding on top of stingrays and then I took him to the interior of the Everglades. He had not fished this area before, and he absolutely loved it, especially since we fished the mouth of a small creek at the beginning and at the end of our trip inside the Everglades and hooking snook and Tarpon

Southeast Coast Pretty consistently. At one point he was hooking little tarpon on every third or fifth cast and some snook miked in as well. It was awesome and a blast. Friday after Thanksgiving I fished with David again and today was better as we started off with some shots at permit, and he hooked a tarpon briefly before the jump caused the leader to wrap around the gill plate and cut us off. After my six hour trip with David I was back out again with regular longtime client Ken and his two kids for a four hour trip. We had to fish in the rain for a while but eventually it cleared and the kids had a blast, catching snappers and jacks and blue runners. We tried to bonefish a little bit at the beginning of the trip as we waited for the storms to pass, and although we didn’t hook any bonefish, they caught two big Mojarras which they found pretty exciting. Kids are so funny. The end of the week had me fishing with Paul and we found some fun yellow jacks and big blue runners at first to start the day. Then our hunt for Tarpon and snook proved to be futile, but we wrapped up the day on the flats fishing for bonefish, and found quite a few schools of mudding bonefish. Tripletail and false albacore may be a good option in the coastal gulf depending on conditions. Look for reds in skinny water and snook around dock lights. BOAT AMERICA CLASSES – CLEARWATER, FLORIDA COAST GUARD AUXILIARY - 2023 - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other life-saving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea.
