Ingredients 1 pound Florida shrimp, peeled & deveined 1 Florida zucchini, finely chopped 1 Florida squash, finely chopped 1 ear Florida sweet corn, kernels removed 1 Florida carrot, finely chopped 1 stalk Florida celery, finely chopped 3 Florida key limes, juiced ¼ cup green onions, finely chopped 1 bunch parsley, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, minced 2 tablespoons butter, divided 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1 tablespoon all-purpose seasoning 3 cups cooked rice (brown or white) Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Preparation: Preheat sauté pan to medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon butter and 1 tablespoon oil. Add vegetables (except green onions and parsley) to pan. Captain’sCorner with Captain Sergio Atanes Pot Luck Month January, what can I say cold, windy, and sometimes if we get lucky some beautiful days. Temperature will tell us what to do if water temperatures are in the mid-sixties or lower snook action is out unless we fish the rivers or around power plantslets be different and explore new adventures by trying some new techniques and areas. Dock fishing: Is a very productive way to catch fish during the colder months as the docks take in sunlight, they radiate the heat through the piling into the water increasing the temperature up to 3-degrees warmer bringing in some nice species not only to keep warm but also to feed on the bait fish that have the same idea for keeping warm. Live shrimp works great this month, with a 1/0 circle hook and a 15-pound fluorocarbon leader about 32-inches long for free lining under the docks. Remember at this time of year the water is extremely clear, so the light leader helps a lot in getting more strikes. I also use a Yellowtail jig it nothing more than a 1/0 hook with lead on the shank available in 1/16 or 1/8 ounce, as this allows me to keep the bait close to the bottom where reds, flounder, and sheepshead tend to hang out. You can use the

same method as fishing with artificial baits by working the shrimp along the bottom with a slow retrieving action, which helps in locating where the fish arestaging. Drop-off: I prefer to use artificial baits this time of year working them slowly along the banks and edges of drop-offs. I can cover more area and increase my chances of finding fish. Look for holes along the mangrove line or points where the currents have dredged cuts or pockets.Producing any change in the depth of water will make a big difference to fish during the winter. Rocky shoreline: Look for areas that have rocks close or exposed during low tides they draw heat and again increase the water temperature around them a perfect spot for speckled trout if the rocks are close to grass flats flounder are a good by catch in many cases as they tend to look for a food source and the rocks are a magnetic for all small creatures. Be different: Sheepshead are one of my favorites during the winter months, a s they prove to be great fighters on light tackle. Feeding on mostly shrimp, fiddlers, small crabs and barnacles they are considered a great table fair, and some anglers even call them chicken of the sea.The big females prefer the deeper waters of the Tampa Bay,

December brings a subtle coolness to Tampa Bay, signaling a shift in redfish behavior. As temperatures drop, these inshore game fish become more active, making it an opportune time for fly or artificial anglers. The weather features moderate temperatures in the high 60s to low 70s with sporadic cold fronts, creating dynamic conditions for redfish.

West Central Florida Restorative Fishing in and around Tampa bay has been on the decline for the past couple years following the red tide in 2021. It used to be a common occurrence to see a group of a hundred redfish and now I feel lucky to see ten together. Unfortunately, after 3 millions pounds of fish were removed and a small 6 month closure, everything was reopened as if nothing happened. Now we’re paying the price and nothing in the bay area appears to be improving.

Redfish take center stage in December. Fly rod and Light tackle anglers focusing on shallow flats, mangrove shorelines, and oyster bars should opt for shrimp and crab imitations on the coldest days. Soft plastic swim-baits and gold spoons are always a reliable choice and are phenomenal at covering water. Long, precise casts to potholes and along grass edges can be extremely productive when sight fishing is not an option. Tampa Bay’s December canvas sets the stage for thrilling redfish encounters. Adjust your tactics to match the changing conditions, and immerse yourself in the excitement of inshore angling against the

West central Florida is in trouble after a red tide that took a toll that none of us have ever seen. The red tide was so thick in some areas that it would prevent sunlight from reaching the floor therefore killing the sea grass. An algae bloom of this magnitude took such a toll that it impacted fish stocks from Sarasota bay all the way up to Tarpon Springs and all of Ta m p a B ay.

West Central Florida Southwest Coast hanging around the ledges, wrecks, and rock piles in anywhere from 12 to 30-feet of water they average in size from 4 to 8-pounds. Here I prefer to use medium tackle, a 7-foot rod medium action with a 4000 spinning reel with 15-pound test braided line and 25-pound test fluorocarbon leader tied with a loop knot to a number 1/0-circlehook. I use a Texas rig where the sinker slides on the leader just ahead of the hook. I also use a small glow soft bead because this keeps the sinker from hitting the knot and the glow beads seem to draw the attention of the larger fish. Live shrimp, fiddler crabs, bloodworms and sand fleas are some of their favorite baits. Smaller sheepsheads prefer docks and oyster bars in shallow water, so just downsize your tackle and enjoy catching a great fighting fish. Power plants: Can’t leave them out great fishing early and you never know what you can catch, best bet for me is using a banana jig with a medium size live shrimp worked slowly on the bottom for pompano and big trout. Let’s not forget jack’s they offer a super fight for their size and in many cases pure entertainment for the young ones.

West Central Florida Recovery time is a necessity for the preservation of our resource and with a re-open to harvest all inshore species, it won’t be possible. The red tide in 2018 created by the blue-green algae dump out of the Caloosahatchee river from Lake Okeechobee was/is a catastrophic event. Following the event, FWC closed the harvest of any inshore species for what seemed like 5 years. This gave the ecosystem a chance to rebound/recover and the fishery now is doing better because of the closure. There is without a doubt, a larger problem at hand, being water quality and the whole state is feeling it. Let’s let nature do her thing. Please SHARE and SIGN . 34TH ANNUAL PRESIDENTIAL SAILFISH TOURNAMENT - JANUARY 19 - 21, 2024 - ISLAMORADA, FL - The Florida Keys Gold Cup Sailfish Championship is a combination of three of the premier sailfish events in the Florida Keys. The FKGC is both an angler tournament as well as a team tournament. Each team must fish aboard the same boat in all three events. At least one angler of each team entered must fish all three events. This format stems from a long history of sailfish tri-fectas. Teams compete to win the coveted Florida Keys Gold Cup Sailfish Tournament trophy. The three events that comprise the Florida Keys Gold Cup include: Islamorada Sailfish Tournament; Islamorada Fishing Club Sailfish Tournament; Cheeca Lodge Presidential Sailfish Tournament. Each tournament has their own set of rules and entry fees. Each angler competes on an individual basis for the Championship Ring that includes bragging rights for the entire year. Teams compete for cash prizes and the coveted Gold Cup Trophy. There are also team awards for second and third places. The Florida Keys Gold Cup Sailfish Championship lures anglers from all over the world. The field has a limited entry of teams of elite sport fisherman. Early entry is encouraged. By entering the Florida Keys Gold Cup, anglers are supporting the Islamorada Charter Boat Association. The charter boat association is a 501-C-3 organization that works to conserve our fisheries here for future generations. The competition heats up in November when the Islamorada Sailfish Tournament kicks of this tournament series. Captain’sCorner with Captain Mike Schulze Inshore Slam and Fellowship: A Day to Remember in Mosquito Lagoon On Thursday evening, I received a text from fellow Salt Strong insider Bill Olson asking if I wanted to go fishing with him on Friday in Mosquito Lagoon. Since I had taken the day off, I asked Tania, and she said she didn’t mind if I went. I was excited to explore with Bill, and we both hoped to find some big reds.

I meet up with Bill at 6:00 am in Fellsmere right off 95. Once we got on the road together, we had about an hour’s drive north to get to the south end of Mosquito Lagoon. It was a cold and overcast morning when we launched the boat and departed the dock at about 7:15 a.m. Bill used Salt Strong’s smart fishing spots to make a plan for us the night before, so we headed to the first spot. When we started fishing, I got cold enough to put a sweater on. The air temp was 56°, and the water temp was 62.3 °. I was looking forward to the sun coming out, but little did I know the sun would not come out all day, but it did warm up some. We had a slow start to our day. We burned through nearly all the spots Bill had selected with no luck. At about 10:00 a.m., we saw a large variety of birds feeding on bait, so we headed

over to them to see what we could find. It was an amazing experience watching all the pelicans and osprey diving on the bait and multiple Great Blue Heron feeding. We fished the mangrove island until all the birds moved on. At this point, we continued to work the island. As we came to a point on the island, I finally caught the first fish. I was throwing a gold digger color power prawn jr, which was hit as soon as it hit the water. I ended up landing decent trout. We continued to fish in this area for a long while with little action. We were hopeful we were in the right area as we saw a few guides with clients fishing in the same area we were in. Unfortunately, besides losing many paddle tales to puffer fish, we didn’t put any fish in the boat in this area. About noon, we decided to make a change and see if we could find the fish. With the increasing NE winds and the current change, we moved and started working on the river’s east side. We found a promising area, and we worked hard—this change of plans paid off for us. We finally found some fish. We caught two trout, a rat redfish, and three snook in this area. This was my very first personal inshore slam. Unfortunately, Bill was unable to find a redfish to get his slam, but he was close with one trout and two snook.

Treasure Coast We returned to the dock around 4:00 p.m. and ran into Tony, one of Salt Strong’s fishing coaches. We chatted with him and found out he found the bull redfish. However, our days were similar, with the bite being slow. Once the boat was loaded, we started our long trek home! I enjoyed spending the day with Bill, talking to him, and getting to know him better. I enjoy the fellowship I have every time I go fishing with fellow insiders and as the president of the Treasure Coast Local Chapter of Salt Strong, I am looking forward to many more trips with fellow insiders of our chapter. Reflecting on a memorable day in Mosquito Lagoon with Bill Olson, from the cold morning to the joy of landing an inshore slam, I’ve decided this will be my last fishing report of 2023. The holiday season calls for time spent with loved ones, creating memories off the water. Tania and I send our best wishes to all fellow anglers, hoping your fishing adventures are safe, blessed, and full of tight lines and good times! A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. No record of any possible deficiencies will be reported to

BOAT AMERICA CLASSES – CLEARWATER, FLORIDA COAST GUARD AUXILIARY - 2023 - The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters, paddlers, anglers, and others to remain safe on the water by taking a Safe Boating Course. A safe boating class can teach about local boating, the value of wearing a life jacket, and several other life-saving lessons. A boating safety course will teach the basic skills to operate a vessel safely. It includes the diverse types of boats, their capabilities, and how to choose the right boat for a particular maritime activity. Class members will also learn about various safety equipment and how to use them to avoid accidents. Before heading out onto the open water, it’s crucial to know how to read the weather since Florida is known for its sudden changes from lovely calm seas and winds to thunderstorms, torrential rains, and waterspouts. In the boating safety class, students learn methods for staying safe in any condition, including heavy winds, fog, and severe storms. Boating can be an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends. But it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers. A class will help the boater avoid being a statistic. It teaches how to handle a boat safely and what to do in an emergency. Finally, taking a boating safety course is a wonderful way to learn the rules and regulations, especially those unique to Florida. Novice and experienced boaters or even non-boaters can benefit from a safe boating course – as an initial learning experience or as a refresher. Regardless of experience level, taking a class is always a good idea. To continue offering these classes safely for the students and instructors, they are being offered on Zoom with the same instructors the student would have had in the classroom and allowing lots of questions and answers. Because the classes are on the Internet, there’s no commuting to a classroom – the students can be anywhere in Florida!
